DIY QUICK FIXES ANYONE CAN PERFORM
I
t’s a common misconception that you need at least some skill with your hands to improve your home. This simply isn’t the case. Here are some quick fixes anyone can perform, all of which come with little fuss and plenty of satisfaction. DOOR HINGES One of the most irritating things in life is a squeaky door hinge. Simply spray a little WD-40 onto the hinges, moving the door back and forth to make sure the liquid is worked in, and you should be set. No WD40? No worries, rubbing petroleum jelly in can also do the trick. SQUEAKY FLOOR Although only a temporary solution, you’d be surprised what a little talcum powder can do when it comes to silencing creaking floorboards.
JAMMED SLIDING WINDOWS AND DOORS Use silicone spray lubricant, available from all good hardware stores, applied to a rag. Wipe the rag along the tracks, and soon you’ll have smooth runnings again. This works whether the tracks are metal, wood or plastic. OLD DECALS Spray the decal with WD-40, and if possible try to work at the edges and get the liquid underneath a little. Allow to sit for a few minutes then gently begin to scrape from the edges using a credit card, ideally old just in case it snaps. If you need to degrease the surface afterwards use washing up liquid.
WORN CANING Over time, the caning on chairs is likely to sag. You can easily tighten this up with a sponge and warm water, rub the water in and allow to dry overnight, repeating if necessary.
TIRED CUSHIONS Place the offending cushion(s) outside in the midday sun for a few hours, turning them over as you would a piece of meat halfway through. Thanks to the evaporation of any moisture stored inside the cushions should start plumping up, providing there’s some life in the old pillow yet.
STAINED TUB Mix equal measures of cream of tartar with baking soda and enough lemon juice so that a paste forms. Rub this into the stain with a cloth, allow around half an hour for it to sit, and then rinse thoroughly with water.
LINOLEUM SCUFFS Rub the scuff with white toothpaste, using a dry cloth. Alternatively, you can use a pencil eraser. Or, if you have some to hand, our old friend WD-40 can work just as well. Once you’re done degrease with washing up liquid and water.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Simply Shuttered - Making your house into a home
W
e have all heard the horror stories or maybe know somebody who has had a poor experience in the past with fly by night companies who provide shoddy workmanship or perhaps are simply too big to care. Sadly that is life these days and lets be honest we all live busy lives and when it comes to having work done in and around our homes all we want is life to be made as simple as possible and to know that our projects are being left in safe capable hands. People & Places met with Paul Beever founder and owner of Simply Shuttered who are based in Pocklington. Paul is a time served joiner with 29 years’ experience and clearly has a deep-seated passion for doing a job right. P&P asked Paul what it was that made him form Simply Shuttered, he stopped and paused for a moment then answered “Being a joiner comes with the ability and skill to produce the highest standard in workmanship not all jobs are straightforward and not all windows are perfectly square so you need to take the time to adapt with precision. I take pride in every project I undertake large or small. Once a workman leaves a customer, they must live with the work you have done. I worked for another shutter company which was profit driven and that meant cutting corners. I believe when you are in business you must leave knowing you have done the best possible job and with your integrity intact that is why I formed Simply Shuttered.”
6 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
Over the years Paul has worked on some large projects including the Houses of Parliament and has always believed that customer satisfaction and quality of service is key. Paul told P&P “On an initial visit I will take sample doors, louvers and colour choices then go through in detail what options the customer has for their windows. I explain the different shutter designs to ensure the customer gets the right design for the project”. He went on to say “Once we receive an order the customer deals with myself from start to finish. We contact the customer to arrange a fitting date and I ensure that the shutters are fitted perfectly, I then explain fully how to operate the shutters and how to take best care of them. My aim is to provide a personal, friendly and professional service ensuring all our customers receive the best results for their windows from start to finish”. Simply Shuttered offers a 5-year guarantee on all their made to measure shutters which is effective from the date of order. Paul explained “We will repair any shutter that is faulty due to an issue with the materials or workmanship, should a repair not be possible, we will replace the product”. Simply Shuttered have an array of different styles and colours to choose from including aluminium intruder resistant, self-closing remote-control systems that will fit any size window, door, patio or bay. Paul explained “All projects are different, and we will offer our customers a solution to fit all budgets”. IS IT TIME TO THINK AGAIN ABOUT
EQUITY RELEASE?
M
ore and more retired homeowners are turning to tax free equity release*. The Financial Advice Service can help to dispel the myths surrounding lifetime mortgages.
The average person releasing equity has been in the same home for over 20 years and has vast experience of house price movements. The housing market, despite some downturns in property values, has experienced strong growth, resulting in many retired homeowners seeing substantial gains from investment in their home and it makes perfect sense to capitalise on this tax free equity to enhance retirement. Unprecedented low lifetime mortgage interest rates against a backdrop of low savings rates, volatile stockmarkets, falling dividend payments and uncertainty about future house values is encouraging people to lock in their gains. Equity release arguably and understandably has been widely criticised in the past, but in recent years due to better safeguards and product enhancements lending has soared. • The growth of the equity release market has lead to product innovation to provide solutions for the varying range of customer needs. • No monthly repayments • Fixed Interest Rates • Interest only plans • Income irrelevant • Poor credit history accepted • Fixed Early Repayment Charges • Free Valuations 12 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
“...it makes perfect sense to capitalise on this tax free equity to enhance retirement.”
• Cashback Available • Cash Reserve Available Other considerations: • Is the adviser / firm a specialist, independent, regulated by the FCA and a member of the ERC • Moving to a cheaper property could be another option • Taking in a lodger could be another way to raise extra funds • An equity release plan will reduce the size of the estate • Entitlement to means-tested benefits could be affected • Property construction and proximity • Health and life expectancy

Existing loans, savings and investments Income and expenditure Local authority grants Help from family
The growing range of products and safeguards, along with a shift in the way consumers are approaching their retirement options, continue to boost the sector. One in three retired homeowners have released property wealth to help family with house deposits. However, the main uses for money drawn down from property are clearing debts and increasing retirement income. The average release in 2019 arranged with the help of The Financial Advice Service was £57,900 as pensioners are now considering their home as part of their retirement portfolio, as it often outstrips the average pension pot and provides an important boost for pensioners who need to secure more funds for their retirement. The equity release sector is responding to the greater demand from elderly homeowners looking to unlock cash from their homes by offering a more diverse range of products and options. There are more than 200 lifetime mortgage equity release deals available. Lifetime mortgage customers now have the option of making no interest payments each month, or they can elect to make voluntary or regular monthly payments if they are concerned about the roll up of interest rates. Some fixed rate lifetime mortgages are now falling below *3%. • The actual rate available will depend on your particular circumstances. Ask for a personalised illustration This evolving marketplace underlines the need for expert independent advice for consumers. The Financial Advice Service is an independent specialist, regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and proud member of the Equity Release Council. Without ties or associations to any particular lenders allow complete impartiality working on behalf of their customers. This is a lifetime mortgage. To understand the features and risks, ask for a personalised illustration. You should always speak to an independent qualified specialist equity release adviser before taking out an equity release product.

A TASTE FOR WASTE
F
ashion conscious shoppers with a penchant for clothes and shoes waste millions of pounds a year on pointless buys that never or rarely see the light of day. If they’re honest, most will admit to having plenty of silly fashion buys languishing in their wardrobes.
Consumer research from Abbey Savings reveals that Britons waste over £169 billion buying expensive items they hardly ever use. The average person has made £3,685 worth of costly pointless purchases, with clothes topping the list of most unused items, followed by fine china and inappropriate shoes. Not surprisingly, women are the biggest squanderers when it comes to clothes, which some husbands and partners will no doubt attest to. The study found that half of all Britons have an expensive item of clothing that they hardly ever wear, with a further 35 per cent owning unworn shoes. The study found that, on average, this amounts to around £102 per adult in the UK, but most women will admit to far more than this - 58 per cent own unworn clothing, compared with 40 per cent of men, and 45 per cent own uncomfortable shoes, compared with just 23 per cent of men. However, men appear to outdo women when it comes to gadgets growing dust, with 28 per cent owning a video camera or games console that is hardly ever used, compared with 25 per cent of women. If men think they can moan about their wife or partner wasting money on clothes, they should be reminded that their barely used gadgets, such as games consoles and video cameras, represent to a whopping £297 of wasted cash on average. Filled with the best of intentions to fit into their fashion disasters, 24 per cent of British people squander around £167 on exercise equipment they hardly ever use. The average person uses their expensive exercise kit just nine times a year. Eight per cent of us are members of a gym that we hardly ever visit, while 23 per cent own a health or beauty gadget that they only use around six times a year, wasting about £206. Reza Attar Zadeh, head of savings at Abbey, says, “It seems that the majority of Brits aren’t making their assets work hard enough for them. With 64 per cent of UK adults having bought a big-ticket pointless purchase, we’d recommend that people consider carefully where they are investing their hard earned cash.” JANUARY 2020 | 13

TOP 10 GLOBAL CRUISING DESTINATIONS
F
ew things compare with the joy of taking to the open seas and discovering far-off lands - whether that’s tiny tropical islands or sprawling global cities. The definition of indulgent exploration, take a look at our Top 10 Cruise Destinations for 2014, imagine yourself absorbing the cultures, flavours and calm that come with a holiday spent floating around such locales, and then get ready to go.
10. NORTH ATLANTIC OCEAN
From the Transatlantic rite of passage, to lush landscapes such as the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Florida Keys and northern tip of the Caribbean, the North Atlantic offers a multitude of delights. And we haven’t even mentioned the Canaries yet.
9. SOUTHERN US STATES AND MEXICO
The sticky heat of Louisiana’s swamplands and New Orleans itself, Florida’s theme parks and chic nightlife, and the Yucatan peninsula’s abundant ruined temples (relics of the Mayan civilization) are all within reach whilst touring this neck of the woods.
8. SOUTHERN AFRICA
Here’s where magical words such as Mauritius, the Seychelles and Madagascar start coming into play. That’s in addition to the obvious allure of South Africa, Tanzania and Mozambique on the mainland, offering a great mixture of landscapes.
7. SOUTH EAST ASIA
From Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia to Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, from sprawling futuristic skylines of glass and steel to ancient cultures and isolated beaches, this is one of the world’s most unforgettable regions.
6. ALASKA
It’s cold, barren and thoroughly inhospitable. Needless to say, then, you don’t come here for the weather. As one of the last surviving wildernesses on Earth, Alaska has been attracting cruises for decades because of its unparalleled, unspoilt icy vistas. 14 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
5. MEDITERRANEAN
What the Middle Sea lacks in tropical climate, it makes up for with searing summer temperatures and a colossal amount of history, along with relatively short distances between ports making for fewer days at sea. One for the culture buffs.
4. CHINA, JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA
A river cruise is unarguably one of the best ways to navigate China’s interior. Meanwhile by taking to the seas from Shanghai in the country’s east, the jaw-dropping beauty of Japan’s islands and South Korea are also yours for the taking.
3. AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND AND THE SOUTH PACIFIC
The downside here is that the Pacific Ocean is huge, so be prepared for a few days at sea in any itinerary. Nevertheless, from Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Wellington, to natural gems like the Great Barrier Reef and Samoa, it’s worth it.
2. CARIBBEAN
Whether it’s Barbados, St. Lucia, Curacao, Cuba, BVI or Antigua - to name but a few - it’s hard to deny that a Caribbean cruise is the archetypal luxury voyage, with tropical paradises lining up for you almost every day, thanks to the proximity of each island to its neighbour.
1. SCANDINAVIA AND THE FJORDS
Nestled at the top of Europe, this stunning region may not shout quite as loud as its rivals, but there are very good reasons why shipmates return here year after year after year: serene landscape, clean air and the legendary Scandinavian hospitality.
AND DON’T FORGET... THE WORLD
OK, so this might be cheating, but we don’t care. The finest way to see every region of the planet is to embark on a mammoth cruise that will take in a little piece of them all. Once in a lifetime stuff; we shouldn’t need to explain how incredible an experience this is.

FITNESS TRAINING FOR BUSY LIVES
I
t’s all very well for fitness trainers to recommend three fullon cardio sessions plus toning and strengthening exercises every week, but not everyone can find time for all that. As you may well know, it is all too easy to sign up for gym membership but it is not that easy to fit regular exercise into a busy lifestyle. Physical activity combined with a healthy diet keeps you looking good and, more importantly, is the best prevention you can get against obesity and many major health problems. The fact is, your health should always be your priority but this doesn’t mean that you have to spend hours gruelling away at the gym to make it number one. Gym member or not, you can always find the time for exercise, if you set realistic goals.
pace for 20 minutes, try alternating between sprinting or an all-out effort for one minute and then slowing down until you get your breath back and then speeding up again. Follow a five-minute cool down and stretch. CIRCUIT SESSION: This is a good total toning and cardio workout. Choose five or six toning exercises - such as the squats, lunges, hamstring curls, push-ups and pectoral squeezes - and perform 10 repetitions of each exercise one after the other, without resting. Repeat this up to four times and you’ll have completed a great fatburning session by keeping your heart rate up and also incorporating resistance exercises. Follow a five-minute cool down and stretch.
If you have a busy lifestyle but want to workout, aim for a more sustainable routine. The intention to spend an hour-and-a-half in the gym after work is only worthwhile if you can achieve that.
GYM BODY PART WORKOUT: This will help strengthen or reshape problem areas of your body. In just 20 minutes you could perform three sets for three or four targeted exercises using gym equipment. Follow with targeted stretches. A good weekly routine would include targeted body part workouts in between cardio sessions.
START BY INCREASING YOUR DAILY ACTIVITY LEVELS: walk to and from the station, get off the bus a stop early, walk the kids to school and back or take the stairs instead of the lift to your office. This is a start, but you can do better than that.
STRETCHING: This helps re-balance your body, improve flexibility and lengthen and tone your muscles. If you are unsure of how to correctly stretch, speak to a personal trainer in order to avoid injury.
The time that you might spend watching Coronation Street or the first half of The Bill can be put to much better use - you can even workout while you are watching them so you don’t miss out. At least three times a week, slot 20 minutes in your busy life for a selection of these fast workouts.
RELAXATION: Busy lifestyles mean stressful ones, so part of your short exercise sessions should focus on balancing the mind and easing muscle tension. Lie on the floor with your palms face up. Close your eyes and breathe deeply through your diaphragm. Allow your lungs and diaphragm to fill as much as possible, counting in for four, and then slowly exhale, counting out for five.
INTERVAL TRAINING SESSIONS: This is a good workout for your heart and stamina. Pick an aerobic activity - such as running, cycling, swimming or even skipping. Rather than stick at the same
You can also relax muscle tension. Start at your toes and clench then relax them, move to your calves and clench and relax and slowly use this technique for all of your body parts to help relax tight muscles.

P&P Health & Beauty Caroline continues: “I knew immediately that I would like to become a Marie Curie nurse and after a three- month recruitment process I was offered the job. To this day, I have never looked back. It’s such a worthy cause and I get an immense amount of job satisfaction. Caring for patients at such a difficult time in their lives is so rewarding and I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some amazing people along the way. I am just one of the many nurses across the Yorkshire team, we have a fantastic support network with brilliant managers who really care about our personal wellbeing as much as the patients.” Caroline returns home from her night shift at around 8am and provides the District Nursing Team and Marie Curie Referral Centre with details of any changes in her patient’s symptoms or condition. She then promptly sets about doing her own chores and housework before showering, snacking on scrambled eggs on toast and heading to bed at 10am. She rises at 5pm and breakfasts on porridge and blueberries before heading off to start her day. Not only is Caroline a Marie Curie nurse, but she also regularly volunteers for the Charity in her limited spare time. Each March, she helps with the Great Daffodil Appeal by supporting and promoting the York collections in the street and supermarkets.
THE GREAT DAFFODIL APPEAL
A
s Marie Curie’s largest annual fundraising campaign – the Great Daffodil Appeal – gains momentum, we caught up with Marie Curie nurse, Caroline Leslie, from Osbaldwick, to find out about her role. Caroline has worked for the charity for over 8 years, covering the York area (within a 25 mile radius of Osbaldwick) and provides care for patients with terminal illnesses in the comfortof their own homes and vital support to theirfamilies. As most of us are relaxing in the evening, Caroline’s job begins at 9pm when she telephones the patients family to confirm the visit. She heads out with a flask of soup prepared by her husband and arrives at her patient’s home for the night shift from 10pm until 7am (she works four nights each week). Caroline explains: “No two nights are the same. I provide medical care to patients with various illnesses including cancer, Motor Neurone Disease, heart failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. My priority is to ensure my patient is comfortable and as pain-free as possible throughout the night. I also offer reassurance, emotional and practical support to my patient and their families. My visits always begin with a handshake but end with a hug. Recently I cared for a lady who asked her blind husband to make scones – with little appetite, that’s all she fancied for breakfast the following morning. Though he was happy to muddle through, I baked during the night while they both slept. It’s amazing how simple tasks can make such a difference.”
“My biggest achievement is the completed a sponsored trek in Cambodia and raised over £10,000 for Marie Curie. It was an incredible experience and I would encourage anyone to take up a challenge in aid of charity. We worked hard fundraising in the year build up to the trek and had such fantastic support from our fundraising colleagues guiding us along the way” Caroline concludes: “Working for Marie Curie and helping to care for local people is incredibly rewarding and I love my job. But it’s thanks to the support of volunteers and generosity of members of the public that enables the Charity to provide nursing care to people with terminal illnesses in the comfort of their own homes – thanks goes to everyone for your hard work and donations!” If you would like to make a donation, please visit https://www. mariecurie.org.uk/donate Each year during March, millions of people show their support for the Great Daffodil Appeal by donating, or wearing a daffodil pin that are available from the Charity’s volunteers across the region. The Great Daffodil Appeal runs throughout Spring and the street collections in York will take place from 25th and 2th8 March. Supermarket collections in all Morrisons stores will run from 9 – 15 March. Anyone who is keen to help with collections should get in touch with Gemma Hewitt on 01904 755260 or visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/ greatdaffodilto find a local collection point. Alternatively, if you’d like to take part in an event, organise your own activity, raise money in your local area or give us your time as a volunteer, please visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/ get-involvedto find out more. For more information visit www.mariecurie.org.uk
Caroline has worked in the caring industry since the age of 18. It was back in 2011, when she was caring for a gentleman with a learning disability, that she noticed an advert in a local newspaper for Marie Curie nurses which read “Can you fill this uniform?”

LET’S TALK ABOUT...
ANXIETY By Karen Hayward
W
include persistent or extreme stress, being less emotionally resilient or more sensitive in general, adverse experiences (particularly in childhood) or due to another mental health issue but it can also be as a result of some medical conditions too such as hyperthyroidism or B12 deficiency for example.
Lots of questions… I sat, pencil in hand (I like to draft ideas in pencil first), started jotting down some thoughts and my anxiety started to disappear. In this situation and in many others, an anxious response is a normal response to a given situation and the anxiety soon disappears.
I would always recommend that someone presenting with the symptoms of anxiety should speak to their GP to rule out any underlying medical conditions. There are a variety of medicines that can be used to effectively help with the symptoms and the GP may be able to arrange some counselling or some Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
hen I sat down to write this feature, I was, perhaps understandably, a little anxious. What would I write? How would you, the reader, perceive my words? Would you enjoy it? How would I do justice to such a huge subject in just a few paragraphs?
I often find that I am a little anxious when I am about to deliver the Mental Health First Aid course because I want to do well, I want my audience to enjoy the course and I want the delegates to get as much out of the course as I do. Again, a perfectly normal response to the situation and the anxiety disappears as soon as I start to speak. Anxiety can manifest itself in many, different ways. There are the physical symptoms; palpitations, hyperventilation, dizziness, nausea, headaches, sweating, dry mouth, gastrointestinal problems, unexplained aches and pains. There are the psychological effects; excessive fear, worrying, mind racing or going blank, memory and concentration issues, irritability, anger, confusion, tiredness and intrusive thoughts and also behavioural effects; avoidance, repetitive or compulsive behaviours, distress in social situations or the feeling of needing to escape. The lists go on and on and, if you look at the list, you will notice that most of these things are not visible from the outside which is probably why there is a tendency to be so dismissive when someone says they are suffering with anxiety. With so much going on, it’s no wonder that anxiety can be so debilitating. Left unchecked, long term anxiety can lead to depression. Anxiety is mostly caused by a perceived threat, but some people are more likely to react with anxiety than others. Risk factors 18 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
There are also several organisations that can offer assistance privately. The charity Anxiety UK, for example, have a wealth of information on their website and offer people access to private therapists at discounted prices so that cost is not a barrier to getting the help you may need. In next months issue, we will be looking at Anxiety Disorders and sharing some self-help techniques that you can use to help manage your symptoms. Best wishes Karen Karen Hayward is a Mental Health First Aid Instructor with MHFA England and also runs private therapy clinics in Ryedale, specialising in trauma-based anxiety www.karenhayward.co.uk

BEAUTIFUL HAIR WHATEVER YOUR AGE

omen have always known that hair becomes more difficult to style and maintain with age, but experts now confirm that it does indeed age along with our skin and bodies.
Use products specifically designed to rejuvenate ageing hair. Dove ProAge shampoo and conditioner is specifically made for ageing hair, but your hairdresser can tailor-make a hair care regime for you. Follow the regime consistently for best results.
Whenever hair is neglected or abused its strength starts to decline, no matter what your age. However, ageing hair is far more delicate and needs a little extra tender loving care.
Treat your hair to regular salon hair and scalp treatments for deep, intense conditioning.
Hair actually starts to age after the age of 25. Each strand shrinks 10 per cent in diameter and may become duller due to loss of the colour pigment melanin. Just like prematurely aged skin, hair can also be prematurely aged by abuse and misuse of chemicals and heat styling tools. Signs include weakness or brittleness, dryness, flaking scalp, split ends and an extra fine and frizzy texture. Ageing hair needs to be strengthened and moisturised by the right combination of products. This can be easily achieved with a daily care regime as well as the right haircut. Celebrity New York hair designer Philip Pelusi recommends that ageing hair be cut and styled a little differently. He says softer, loose curls or waves make anyone appear younger, whereas sharp angles and severe shapes will have the opposite effect. Pelusi also suggests that ageing hair looks at its best when treated to softer, slightly lighter hair colour with varying tones. Dark, solid shades must be avoided. Hair colour also needs to complement skin and eye colour, so a consultation with a skilled salon colourist is advisable. Pelusi offers his top 10 anti-ageing tips for hair.
Supply nutrients to your hair through a healthy diet and supplements of essential fatty acids. Hair is definitely a reflection of inner health. Drink plenty of water to keep skin and hair hydrated. Exercise helps maintain a healthy blood flow to the scalp. This will help encourage healthy hair growth. Maintain a relaxation programme to keep stress at bay. Stress can take its toll on the health of your hair and skin. Get plenty of rest. Proper sleep is very important to maintain the health of the entire body, including the hair. Keep the scalp in its optimum healthy state. A healthy scalp means healthy hair. Treat wet hair with tender loving care. Apply a detangling product before combing it and use a wide toothed comb only. Never brush wet hair as it will break. Sleep on a satin pillowcase to reduce friction on the hair, which can cause breakage. JANUARY 2020 | 19

SIMPLY SUBLIME
Mumbai Lounge Food Review The prawns were succulent and cooked perfectly and the spices complimented each other to create a dish rich in flavour and of medium strength. However, nothing prepared me for the Nawaabi Special Mix, this dish was simply out of this world with its large king prawn, tandoori duck which was tender, and chunks of chicken tikka all served with salad and sauce (highly recommended).
“In summary if you want an authentic Indian meal with excellent service that has you planning another visit before leaving the restaurant then Mumbai Lounge is a must try.” Both starters were fresh, and all the meats were succulent with a blend of spices that simply lingered on the tongue creating two unforgettable dishes.
M
umbai Lounge has just recently opened a new restaurant in the Village of Shiptonthorpe and you could be forgiven for thinking that you are entering your average neighbourhood Indian restaurant, but Mumbai Lounge is anything but. It was a Friday night about 7.30 when both myself and my wife arrived and was immediately greeted by the friendly staff and the incredible aroma of Indian cuisine being prepared and served. We were shown to our table and I noticed that the restaurant was filling up quickly, I very soon realised that there was nothing average about this restaurant when we were handed the menu. As you would expect there was an array of dishes to choose from however these were not your typical dishes with the starters alone comprising of Indian Style Scallop, Samundar-Ka-Sundrom (king prawn marinated in olive oil fresh green herbs and spices) and Tandoori Style Duck. Whilst perusing the menu we were brought our drinks along with some freshly made Poppadum’s which were still warm from the kitchen, the selection of pickles on our table complimented the Poppadum’s perfectly. We ordered a starter of Badshah Zinga on Puree and Nawaabi Special Mix. The Badshah Zinga on Puree was a stunning dish comprising of king prawns cooked with ginger which gave it some heat along with garlic, chopped green chilli, tomatoes and tamarind sauce. 22 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
We shared a main course of Jayley Piaza, chicken and lamb which is cooked with chopped onion, mixed peppers crushed chilli and served on an iron wok (sizzling). I was drawn to this dish for 2 reasons, 1 being I prefer my dishes to be hot in strength and 2 lamb can be difficult to cook correctly and could be tough if over cooked. On arrival as stated the dish was sizzling hot and beautifully presented, the first thing that struck me was the large pieces of chicken and lamb which was plentiful. The meat was tender, spiced perfectly and sat on a bed of onion and peppers, although this dish is hot in strength you didn’t lose the taste of the spices and the lamb was simply sublime, it was tender and melted in the mouth leaving you wanting more. In summary if you want an authentic Indian meal with excellent service that has you planning another visit before leaving the restaurant then Mumbai Lounge is a must try. It is easy to see why they were awarded the prestigious Bangladesh Caterers Association (BCA) Restaurant of the year 2018 & 2019. Mumbai Lounge is taking Valentine’s Day bookings now so please book early to avoid disappointment. Highly recommended 5 stars.

“...the amount of fish being eaten has fallen across the UK in the last few years - possibly due to the recession and families making cut-backs.” Good quality omega nutrition also ensures normal development of the retina and the brain, supporting normal learning and development and now it is also thought that it can lower the risk of allergic disease. The benefits continue through childhood, where emerging evidence suggests that behavioural disorders such as ADHD can be managed through diet. They continue into later life where it is now thought that fish oils can reduce the risk of dementia and signs of ageing. Sara Stanner, Science Programme Manager of the British Nutrition Foundation, added that fish plays a very useful role in a healthy diet. As studies continue, it is thought that it has far more health benefits than originally believed. For example, fish intake is now thought to protect against cardiovascular disease and a number of cancers and may even help control Type 2 Diabetes.
FISH, FISH AND MORE FISH W
e are often being told of the benefits of fish in our diets, with recommendations that we should all be eating at least two portions of the oily variety, such as salmon, every week. But according to recent research, we are nearly all neglecting the health benefits that this readily-available and low-cost protein offers. According to Dr Rachael Gibbs of the University of Reading, both men and women are falling below the recommended intakes of omega 3 oils - easily obtainable through regular consumption of fish such as fresh or smoked salmon. This means, according to scientific study, that we are not reaping the benefits which can start as early as in the womb and take us through to old age. The health benefits of the oils that are found in fish have been well documented, but more recent evidence suggests that there are even more reasons we should take a closer look at our diets throughout our life-stages. For example it is known that regular intake of omega oils will ensure good foetal development, offering better immunity and higher birth weights. But more recently it has been discovered that they could also reduce the risk of post-natal depression and improve IQ in babies. 24 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
‘Studies also suggest that maternal fish intake during pregnancy may reduce the risk of eczema and asthma in babies,’ she said, adding that other components in fish such as selenium, potassium and vitamins could also be adding valuable nutrients to healthy diets. Therefore it is surprising to note that, according to information from the Expenditure and Food Survey, the amount of fish being eaten has fallen across the UK in the last few years - possibly due to the recession and families making cut-backs. However, it is thought that more than 1 million fresh salmon meals are eaten in the UK every day and fresh fish will become the fastest growing protein of the last few years - meaning we will all soon be reaping the ever-increasing benefits of a nutritious diet.

1 pack ready-rolled puff pastry 250g mascarpone cheese 2 tbsp finely-chopped dill Juice of 1/2 a lemon Salt and freshly-ground black pepper, to taste 200g pack of smoked salmon trimmings 110g cooked, fresh peas
METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to 220C/425F/gas mark 6.
SIMPLE SALMON TART This tart is really impressive-looking but very simple to make. It makes a great lunch, or can be cut up into smaller pieces for a canape-sized nibble. Use salmon trimmings to make this a very economical dish.
2. Unroll the puff pastry and cut down the length into 2 pieces. Lightly score a line 1 cm round the edge of each piece, making sure you don’t cut right through the pastry. 3. Mix the mascarpone together with the dill and lemon juice and season well with salt and pepper. Spread this over the pastry, taking care to keep the mixture within the scored edge. 4. Cut the smoked salmon into ribbons and arrange over the top of the herby mascarpone, pushing them lightly into cheese, then sprinkle with the peas. 5. Bake for about 15-20 minute until the pastry is crisp and golden. 6. Sprinkle with a little extra dill and cut into slices.

PORT AND CHEESE
A perfect partner at any restaurant or at a dinner party is port and creamy blue cheese. A non-vintage port is a perfect partner for creamy stilton, while vintage port pairs beautifully with feisty cheeses such as gorgonzola. Epcurious.com wine expert Anthony Dias Blue says, “(Port has) an element known as rancio - a desirable, rich, oxidised quality, which meshes reliably with the luxurious flavours of such mould-laced cheeses.”
SWEET WHITES FOR CHEESE
When serving a sumptuous cheese platter at a dinner party, remove the reds and opt for a fruity, vibrant white to complement your range of cheese. Sweet, spicy and fruity German wines such as gewürztraminer and rieslings are good all-rounders. For blue-veined cheeses, choose a sweet dessert wine. These will also work well if you are also serving desserts at the table.
LIKE CHALK AND CHEESE T
here are certain wines and foods that delight the taste buds when mixed. Wine seeks relationships with the finer ingredients in life, yet many have a tough time making a sound partnership with cheese. In fact, some cheeses can make a good red wine dull and lifeless. If you love to end a special meal with a cheese platter, balance the flavours of your wines and cheeses carefully. The stronger the cheese, the more intense its partner should be. But remember that balance isn’t about matching like with like, it can be as different as chalk and cheese.
SOFT TOUCH
Soft, creamy cheeses such as brie and camembert coat the palate with a layer of soluble fat, masking tastes. Even if you are drinking an excellent red, you will loose some of its flavour. Team soft, creamy cheeses with extra-dry champagne and the effervescence will clean the fats from the palate.
PUNGENT CHEESES AND REDS
If you must be awkward and insist on red with your cheese platter, choose a concentrated, rich red such as Amarone della Valpolicella. This Italian dry red is made from air-dried grapes and can stand up to the most pungent cheeses including Parmigiano-Reggiano and JANUARY 2020 | 29
