COLOUR YOUR HOME TO ENHANCE YOUR MOOD
C
arefully applied colour in your home makes an immediate and lasting visual impact, giving off an array of mood-changing associations. Your colour scheme should complement the space and suit your personal preferences.
Before you choose your colour schemes, always consider the space. Dark rooms can be brightened up with light-coloured walls, accessorised with white voile curtains and plenty of green plants. Tiny rooms look more spacious with pale, cool colours, accessorised with minimal light-coloured furniture. Boxy rooms cry out for a focal point, such as a feature wall contrasted with an attentiongrabbing piece of furniture or art. By understanding the qualities of primary and secondary colours and how they work together, you’ll have a better understanding of how to apply them in your home. Primary colours are red, yellow and blue. Secondary colours are orange, green and violet. Deep, warm colours including red-violet, red, red-orange, orange, yellow-orange and yellow give a room an intimate, cosy feel. Light, cool colours such as green, blue-green, blue and blue-violet make a room seem more spacious and elegant. Pale neutral colours also have this effect.
RED:
Bright and bold, red suggests vitality and aggressiveness. It is a great accent colour, making cold, open rooms seem more inviting and intimate. Deep, subtle shades of red such as burgundy and maroon are perfect for living rooms. Its complementary colour is green.
GREEN:
The colour of nature, green is refreshing and pleasing to the eye. It makes dim rooms seem more vibrant by bringing a garden-like atmosphere indoors. With its varying shades, green works in just about any room. Its complementary colour is red.
Yellows bring warmth and light into rooms.
YELLOW:
Stimulating, sunny and cheerful, yellow is associated with intellect, power and creative energy. Bright yellows bring warmth and light into dark rooms, and pale yellows make small rooms seem larger. It is also a great kitchen colour. Its complementary colour is violet.
VIOLET:
Strong and majestic, violet is a powerful accent colour. Pastel violets take on the mood characteristics of red or blue depending on which is more prominent in the shade. Lilac for example, takes on blue’s characteristics, while lavender takes on red’s qualities. Its complimentary colour is yellow.
BLUE:
Most blue shades denote harmony, peace, steadfastness and loyalty. While it’s appropriate for any room, blue is an excellent bedroom colour because it makes one feel comforted and serene. It can also soften rooms that are over-bright. Its complimentary colour is orange.
ORANGE:
Orange combines the energy of red with the intellectual associations of yellow. Dominant and lively, orange is a vibrant choice for bathrooms and work areas. Peachy oranges have a delicate effect, while brownish oranges such as terracotta give off warm, cosy vibes. Its complimentary colour is blue. The easiest way to colour your home is to start off with a relatively blank canvas, featuring fairly neutral shades on your more permanent fixtures and fitting such as sofas and floor coverings. These don’t have to be boring. You can use rich but neutral colours like chocolate and versatile stone. These shades work wonderfully with an accent colour running through your homes accessories. You can use your curtains, cushions, lamps, candles, blankets, rugs and pictures. 4 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Flames of York & Scarborough Ltd
I
f you’re looking for a fireplace or stove that excels in beauty, quality and energy efficiency – look no further than Flames of York & Scarborough.
That’s the claim made on the website and I am here today to find out if it is true. As you enter the showroom which is situated on Layerthorpe York you are immediately greeted with the vast selection of appliances Flames has to offer. I glanced to my left and there was Pete Brown (one of the owners) stood behind the service counter talking with a new customer who had just placed an order with Flames for a new log burning stove to be fitted. I nonchalantly ventured further into the store and looked around so as not to disturb the discussion but could hear the amount of detail Pete was going into regards the fitting procedure and really confirming that the customer was completely happy with his order. Once the customer had left the showroom, I walked over the service desk and was greeted by Pete with a smile as he finalised his notes. The more we spoke it quickly became very apparent that this guy knew what he was talking about. I was keen to find out more about the business and Pete explained “The first showroom was opened in Hull in 2003 by myself and my business partner Andrew Blakeston, Andy still runs Hull and I run York and Scarborough along with two other directors - (Craig and Ryan Atkinson (brothers) - who carry out the installation. We wanted to offer only the best products and services to our customers and above all give them value for money every time”. He went on to explain “We created strategic partnerships with 6 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
some of the market leading brands which meant that we were always one of the first businesses to be able to offer the latest energy efficient appliances as they became available to market”. The York showroom opened 5 years ago and was then followed by Scarborough 18 months ago. I asked Pete what it was that made Flames unique, how was it that they had expanded the business and bucking market trends when others were disappearing from the high street, Pete looked at me and smiled, then said “It is our aim to give our customers excellent service from point of sale to installation, but the one thing that sets us aside is, our installers Anthony and Craig are partners within the business and we have engineers who are directors so everyone has a vested interest in making sure that we only offer the best installation solutions and products to give the best possible all round service”. Pete walked me around the showroom and pointed out some of the leading brands on offer there, for example Stovax, Paragon, be Modern and Gazco to name but a few. Pete explained “Whatever you’re seeking, whether it be gas, electric, solid fuel, hole-in-the-wall, or wood burning stoves – we have a wide range to cater to both your functional needs and aesthetic preferences”. So now it is very apparent that the initial claim on the Flames website is very true and you can rest assured that you will receive nothing more than 5***** service from Pete and his team. HOW TO DRESS YOUR WINDOWS
C
urtains do more than just keep the light out. They maintain privacy, divide a room and provide a punch of colour and personality. Yet many people ignore window dressings when they redecorate, sticking to plain, ill fitting or just plain ugly curtains or blinds. Follow these tips to get the perfect look for your windows.
CONSIDER ROLE
Just as important as style is the role your window dressings will play in a room. Do you wish to block out light in a bedroom? Choose a lined curtain or dim out blind. Or is privacy of utmost importance? Then a bamboo blind or frosting (great DIY options are now available) may be better.
DON’T SHY FROM COLOUR AND TEXTURE
When you’ve spent time and money getting your room just right it’s a shame to simply hang a boring beige roller blind. A brightly patterned curtain or heavily textured blind can change a room from bland to bling in an instant. Hangings Count When choosing curtains consider how you would like them to be hung. Gathered curtains on a rail can look dated but tab tops have a casual breeziness, a box valance is boldly luxurious while a rod and rings imparts a neat, classic feel to your room. More modern are the eyelet curtains which have a simplistic, almost nautical feel.
GO BESPOKE
Buying curtains or blinds off the shelf may save money but badly fitting dressings stand out a mile and won’t always be fit for
8 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
purpose. Why buy a blind which hangs an inch from the sill or a pair of curtains which don’t hang right? Going made-to-measure allows you to choose your ideal combination of fabric and shape for your room.
TRACKS ARE KEY
Just as important as the curtains themselves are the poles or tracks you hang them on. Choose a sturdy pole which will take the weight of your curtain without bending and which will suit your style - more decorative poles look good with eyelets or ties while simpler poles are better for rings.
KEEP CURTAINS OUT OF KITCHENS
In both kitchens and bathrooms curtains look fussy and out of place and gather dirt and moisture which leads to mould. Pick a simple roman or roller blind but add interest with a bold design to ensure your window doesn’t fade in to the background. Try NonFabric Wooden and bamboo blinds can look fantastic in modern spaces and make an interesting change from the usual curtains. In traditional homes, particularly those with large bay windows there’s really nothing as sophisticated as shutters - panelled or louvered to suit the style of your home.
SHADE GLASS ROOMS
Conservatories and sun rooms take the brunt of the sun’s rays. It can prove expensive to protect them with specially created blinds but it’s important to do so. Just an hour in the full sun can turn a conservatory in to a sauna, negating the price you paid for it in the first place!

FLOORING TRENDS
F
looring trends have changed throughout the years as homeowners acquire new tastes and technology allows a larger variety of floor designs.
All of us are familiar with the basic side by side wooden flooring, but if you’re thinking of adding a unique twist, you can now add patterned wood layouts to update your floor space. Why design your flooring to look the same as everyone else’s when you could add a unique pattern? Chevron and herringbone floor patterns are a great way to showcase your kitchen or hallway and they are also a great addition to bathrooms. It’s no secret that wooden flooring, tile and other hard surfaces are everywhere right now, but carpet is also expected to be big in 2020. Consumers are still choosing carpets for the plush feel and the ability to add warmth to the room. Thanks to the latest manufacturing techniques carpets are softer and more durable than ever. While carpets in neutral shades remain a strong favourite, the newest styles are available in a broad range of spectacular colours and patterns. It is a bold move to lay a patterned carpet but if you choose the right one, such as a strong geometric design you won’t regret it. Small spaces are excellent to begin experimenting with. Patterns give the illusion of space and some extravagant floor covering can turn something ordinary to extraordinary. Carpet tiles are a great Choice as you can mix and match them to create your very own unique patterns. These tiles stick to hard floors using a removable nontoxic adhesive, making them easy to clean and to update your look with current trends.

The two main pieces of advice when shopping for flooring is...
BRING HOME A LOT OF SAMPLES
Try a wide range of colours, patterns and designs, even the ones that you don’t think you will use, you might just be surprised by how good they look.
GO QUALITY
When it comes to flooring don’t go cheap. Quality material is likely to be more durable and in the long run this will save you money.

HAUNTED YORKSHIRE
WHITBY ABBEY
HAUNTED YORKSHIRE As Halloween approaches and children consider their costumes, have you ever thought that there may be more thrilling ways to spend the 31st October. Why not venture out in search for your very own ghost? Yorkshire, with its rich and spooky history, is an idyllic setting for a drink, a night out or, for those less faint hearted, an overnight stay. But remember..... you may not be alone. Read about the following well known paranormal jewels of Yorkshire.....if you dare!!!!
THE GOLDEN FLEECE 16, Pavement, York YO2 9UP
Heralded as York’s most haunted pub, the Golden Fleece is situated on the ancient cobblestone streets of York’s historic centre. Mentioned in the York archives of 1503 it is known to have many ghostly residents. Some buildings look haunted; they have that grim, brooding, spooky look about them. That said, the Golden Fleece to all intents and purposes looks like a delightful misshapen sixteenth century building, squashed between two larger oak beamed neighbours. Once inside however, you get the overwhelming sense that you are not alone. The rear yard of the Inn is named after Lady Alice Peckett, whose husband John owned the premises alongside acting as the mayor of York around 1702. Many guests have reported seeing the spectral apparition of the late Lady Peckett silently gliding down the endless corridors in the early hours of the morning. Accompanied by the sweet smell of perfume, the vision of this elderly woman has been witnessed many times patrolling both the Shambles Room and the room affectionately named after her. She has also been seen disappearing through the function room wall to the shock and surprise of many guests. Many guests have reported seeing a young woman dressed in black, who walks past the window in St Catherine’s room. Guests have felt her presence to be accompanied by an oppressive atmosphere 16 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
and the unnatural sensation of a weight being pressed down on their shoulders. More recently, residents of the Golden Fleece have reported waking up to an uneasy feeling and the apparition of a World War II Canadian Airman standing over them in bed, and on occasion touching them with an icy hand. It is believed that the airman either hung himself or plunged three stories after a heavy drinking session. Either way he met an unpleasant end and continues to torment the Inn with his chilling presence. The bar and public area also has its fair share of ghostly activity. ‘One Eyed Jack’ inhabits the bottom bar, carrying an old Flintlock Pistol and dressed in red. He paces fretfully up and down the area where he is believed to have lost his life. Joining him is a grumpy old man who crouches in a small alcove silently making his presence known. In the top bar, patrons have seen the ghost of a young boy in Victorian attire. This child was allegedly accidently killed by one of the horses that pulled the delivery cart in those days long passed. In addition to these resident ghouls there have been sightings of a little girl who inhabits the kitchens, roman soldiers in the cellars and a number of accounts have been made by staff of a sensation of a sudden tightening of their neck whilst standing at the bar. Doors can be herd banging, mysterious footsteps can be heard on the stairs, strange lights appear, cold spots can be felt, beds move and candles light themselves. The seriously spooky happenings at the Golden Fleece have been prolific and impressive enough to warrant a visit from the Most Haunted team back in 2005.
P&P Lifestyle including three phantoms in Cavalier costume. The Old Hall in the village, used by Cromwell during the battle, is said to be haunted by his ghost.
THE BLACK SWAN HOTEL 92, Peasholme Green, York, YO1 7PR
NUNNINGTON HALL Nunnington, near York Y062 5UY
Nunnington Hall may look tranquil and inviting from the outside, but enter at your peril! The plot of Nunnington Hall has been occupied since the 13th century, the main building of which was renovated in the 17th and 18th centuries. Believed to be haunted by the ghost of Lady Nunnington, her dress can be heard dragging up and down the staircase on a cold winter’s night. Doors are known to open and slam shut with no explanation and the sounds of weeping have been heard throughout the early hours. The hall is reportedly spiritually active and sounds of children whispering can be heard seeping down from the attic. In the panelled room a dark shapeless mass can be seen entering through the wall and slowly moving across the bed and out of the room through the window. Terrified screaming has been heard coming from within this room. In the ground floor rooms people have heard the sounds of a party, but no party was being held. Accompanying these sounds have been childrens playful voices and books have been known to fly across the room by an unseen force.
BAGDALE HALL 1 Bagdale, Whitby, North Yorkshire
Built in 1516, Bagdale Hall is thought to be Whitby’s oldest building. It has therefore had its fair share of paranormal goings on. Flickering lights, clattering footsteps, childrens cries and whispers are amongst just a few of the ghostly happenings. However their resident ghost, Browne Bushall, will really have you wishing that you had stayed at the Holiday Inn!!!! Former owner of the hall, Bushall, met a grizzly end when he was executed for piracy. He is thought to have returned to the hall after his death and is now said to stalk up and down the staircase.
Built in the 18th century, the Black Swan Hotel is familiar with a number of ghostly residents, one of the most prominent being a young woman who has regularly been reported floating through the walls of guest rooms. Some guests have been so alarmed at the sight of this woman that they have checked out of their room immediately. Not limited to the guest rooms, ghostly sightings have also been reported in the cellar, where investigators found what they believed to be a face coming through the wall. Not for the faint hearted, the Black Swan Hotel is the ideal place for hard core ghost hunters to stay.
GISBOROUGH HALL HOTEL Whitby Lane, Guisborough, North Yorkshire, TS14 6PT
Built in 1856, Guisborough Hall Hotel boasts a long and fascinating history, so it’s no wonder that things are regularly heard to go bump in the night. The hotel is haunted by three ghosts – one butler, one old lady and one which has yet to be identified. Many of the rooms are occupied by friendly ghosts who are known to make strange noises in the middle of the night, waking guests. These friendly ghosts make Guisborough Hall a great choice for those who want a more amiable paranormal experience.
WHITBY ABBEY Whitby
Perched high of the cliff, the eastern front of Whitby Abbey dominates the sky line. The ruins we see today date almost entirely to the 1220’s. Perhaps not surprisingly many a ghostly resident has been seen in the abbey and its grounds. St Hilda, the Abbes of the 7th century reportedly appears in a high window of the abbey on dark and stormy nights, bathed in an angelic glow. Most of the modern hauntings here consist of a presence rather than an actual sighting. However some people claim to have seen a dark figure of a woman shaking her head and ringing her hands as if greatly upset. On approaching the woman she appears to be in 18th and 19th century dress. No one has seen her fade away, though on momentarily turning away she has vanished from thin air. Another ghostly citizen of the abbey is the wrath of Constance d’Beverley. The young nun fell in love with a handsome young knight and broke her vows of chastity. She was cruelty bricked up alive in the walls of the dungeon where she screamed for days until she eventually died. Her ghost has been seen ascending the stairs leading up from the dungeon, still screaming to this day and begging for her release. It’s no wonder why the abbey helped to inspire Bram Stoker’s chilling gothic masterpiece Dracula.
LONG MARSTON North Yorkshire
In 1644, Oliver Cromwell defeated a Royalist army at the Battle of Marston Moor, about a mile north of Long Marston village. The ghosts of the Royalist soldiers have frequently been seen in the area,
BOLLING HALL Bradford
With no fewer than 20 recorded sightings of full bodied apparitions, it’s no wonder that Bolling House is earmarked as one of Yorkshire’s most haunted buildings. With a chilling history which dates back to 1086, not to mention the hall being involved in the English Civil War and featuring in the Domesday book, the staggering volume of paranormal sightings at Bolling Hall isn’t surprising. The first haunting took place in 1643, with countless reports following for years after. Guests and staff alike have witnessed many a ghost and ghoul, many of whom inhabit the Blue Room. A lady dressed in white has been seen floating across the room and disappearing through the fireplace and the image of a man in a long black coat standing menacingly in the corner is a common sight. The People & Places team will be out and about on the streets of York, the most haunted city in England, on 31st October.... will you? OCTOBER 2019 | 17

SHOOTING FOR BEGINNERS Written by Sam Berridge
F
or many, the thought of holding let alone shooting a firearm can be daunting. The preconceived thought that the gun will come back and hit you in your shoulder is enough to put anyone off as let’s face it, why would you want to be hurt. Taught correctly however in a safe and controlled manner this couldn’t be further from the truth. Firearms come in all shapes and sizes which of course vary in price. Should you hold the correct license and have gone through the rigorous police vetting process, it becomes a straightforward process to buy whichever firearm takes your fancy provided you can justify its use. Of course, it’s not something I recommend just jumping straight into and any police force won’t let you without being a member of a certified shooting club or farmer who needs one for vermin control for example. There are in fact many clubs you can join and shoot with, without holding a firearm certificate. This is subject to close monitoring by a qualified instructor, but many have an initial starter package which allows you to shoot a variety of firearms before you take the plunge and commit to applying for a license. Having a license is not without its challenges I must add. This privilege and huge responsibility mean’s you must be an upstanding, sensible member of society else you can wave goodbye to that all-important bit of paper and understandably so. If, however you feel you meet the requirements, all of which are available on your respective police force website then shooting can be a great sport. To prove just how safe and enjoyable shooting can be, we took 15-year-old Presley along to Wolds Shooting Club to experience firsthand what to expect. The club gave him a full safety 18 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
brief and asked some basic questions to determine his experience. Understandably other than the hours spent on the X-Box as any teenager would, he had no experience in real life firearms handling. From shooting a .22 caliber rifle initially, he managed to get all shots on the target in an impressive grouping for a beginner. This of course wet his appetite and quickly left him wanting more. With the opportunity to shoot different guns, it only furthered his desire of taking up the sport as a hobby, leaving him well and truly hooked. So, if you feel you can resist the temptation to go all out and spend your hard-earned pennies within the first week, then shooting as a safe and addictive sport for all ages may be for you. The take home message is making sure you go about it following advice and guidance by joining a club and if done correctly you will never look back.

HOW TO FIND
THE PERFECT PAIR OF JEANS
T
here’s nothing simpler than a pair of blue jeans, they go with anything, can be dressed up or dressed down, can be smart enough for work or just right for lounging. So how is it that finding the perfect pair can be such a trauma?
Take the skinnies, which until recently were the fashionista’s denim of choice. Sure they looked fabulous on Kate Moss and the high street served up pairs in every colour and to suit every wallet. But the truth be told, though most of us were wearing them, 99% didn’t really suit them. Ditto the high waist, the extreme flare, the peg and even the boyfriend jean. Fashion or no fashion, the right pair of denims needs to suit your shape. But fear not fair maidens, the right pair of jeans doesn’t have to mean boring old bootcut. There is a style-forward shape out there for you whether you’re an apple, a pair or a beanpole. Skinny minnies may be the envy of the more voluptuous woman but a stick thin figure is as difficult to dress as the widest behind. You can pull off skinnies, yes, but be aware that they will accentuate thin legs. Add curves with a high waist, wide set back, high up pockets and a good flare which, if you aren’t afraid of your height, will look fabulous with a rocking pair of wedges. Pears shaped ladies may bemoan their inability to work the rock chick trend but there’s nothing that looks finer than a pair of lovely wide legs with a high
22 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
heel and a simple beaded vest top on a curvy figure. A wider leg balances hips and conceals thunder thighs but beware of too much stretch across the behind, which can make a large bum look huge. Shorter legs can be elongated with straight-legged jeans, especially those which crop at the ankle, giving the illusion of a longer, thinner leg and do away with the need for adjustment. Although beware of a too-short crop which can make a petite lady look shorter and a sturdy calf look positively chunky. Long legs with a short body can be equally difficult, especially when it comes to finding jeans to fit. Check Gap or J Brand for longer inseams and avoid high waists at all costs. Slouchy boyfriend jeans that hang on your hips look great on longer legs but watch out for less than perfect tummies that can peek out if your top is too short. Boyish figures that are a little muscular or too straight-up-and-down might find slim-fitting jeans too figure hugging on heavy calves but flares to slouchy on barely-there bums. You’re in luck though - this year’s peg leg jeans look perfect on you, adding a curve to your figure, particularly with the addition of a high waist. If you’re still unsure about which jeans are going to suit you and the world of fashion is just too fickle for your credit card there’s some good news. Head for the back of your wardrobe now because the word on the catwalk is that the bootleg cut is heading for a major comeback.

THE NATURAL WAY TO PERFECT SKIN
W
e spend millions of pounds every year on skincare products that promise everything from vanishing wrinkles to eternal youthfulness. But according to experts who are not part of the face cream industry, there may well be a much simpler, and certainly much cheaper way to achieve the skin we have always wanted without using laboratory produced products. As with most things that make our bodies healthier, it would appear that a change of lifestyle will beautify the skin. Certain foods that can be easily included in your diet are especially good for your skin, promoting smooth skin growth with better elasticity and tone, and this means fewer wrinkles, dry patches and blemishes. Whilst the manufactured products claim results in extra-quick time with lasting effecs (providing you keep buying them), the results from the lifestyle change method will show gradually but will last for the rest of your life, with no huge financial outlay and just a small change in your eating habits. So which foods fall into the category of beautiful skin boosters? All types of fish, including shellfish, are full of both zinc and the essential Omega 3 fatty acids; upping your intake of Omega 3 can reduce inflammation and dryness, both of which contribute to premature skin ageing. Omega 3 is also very beneficial to those suffering with psoriasis or eczema thanks to its anti-inflammatory qualities, which benefit your arteries and improve circulation; something that is crucial to good skin health. The zinc in fish helps fight acne and is also used by the body for new-cell growth and the sloughing of old skin cells, making the new skin glow. Those of us who have battled with less than perfect skin may have tried a peel face mask, but we could just as easily have peeled a piece of fruit instead. Vitamin C is often emblazoned on beauty creams as the magic collagen-producing ingredient, and so it is, but is better eaten than rubbed on: citrus fruit in particular will tighten and smooth your skin better than any synthetic peel. The antioxidants in fruits also help to neutralize highly reactive oxygen molecules called free radicals that can age your skin by damaging cells. If, however, you are not a great fruit lover, then sprouts and peppers are also high in this great vitamin.
24 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
‘Certain foods that can be easily included in your diet are especially good for your skin...’ We all recognise the importance and health benefits of fresh vegetables in our daily diet, but for great skin, buy the green and orange-red veggies such as sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach and spring greens. The red-orange vegetables contain plenty of betacarotene that our clever bodies turn into Vitamin A - another antioxidant that has been used as a component in acne medication for years. Dark green vegetables are also packed with Vitamin A, and will help to make your skin fresh and moist. If you want very soft, young looking skin, you should look to the humble nut for help. All nuts, and almonds in particular, contain Vitamin E which fights the free radicals that contribute to dulllooking skin, and helps the skin retain moisture, in turn reducing the dryness which is so ageing. For a great skin-boosting snack, eat some almonds with cottage cheese; adding the selenium found in the cheese to Vitamin E boosts its antioxidant qualities. Pistachios, walnuts and almonds also have a good amount of the valuable Omega 3 fatty acids in them. The last of our special skin foods are the unprocessed whole grains. Eating wholewheat bread will add Rutin, another antioxidant, to your diet. Wheatgerm also contains a B vitamin biotin which helps cells process fats; if you are lacking in biotin, your skin will be scaly and dry. Using buckwheat instead of refined flour in your cooking will help to minimise acne, as well as reducing the likelihood of you developing diabetes in later life. So now you are armed with the knowledge of what foods are great for your skin and the rest of your body. Throw in a little regular exercise and stress control, and your skin will naturally bloom and glow.

DON’T DREAD THE WINTER, BREATHE EASIER WITH YORKSHIRE’S ONLY SALT THERAPY CENTRE
F
or many of us with respiratory conditions, the thought of winter fills us with dread. I know I used to hate the cold weather as it used to trigger my asthma and I’d find myself reaching for my blue ‘wheezie’ numerous times a day. I also used to suffer often with chest infections, I had 4 in 2017. Since discovering salt therapy, I can proudly say I haven’t suffered with one since.
‘I thought salt was bad for you’ we hear a lot of people say. Well, it is if you eat it, but by breathing it in, your body processes it in a different way. Remember in the olden days when we used to be sent to the seaside if we weren’t feeling well? That was because of the natural healing properties of the salty air. Whilst salt was used medicinally by the ancient Greeks, salt therapy was actually introduced in the Adult Salt Room 1890’s by a Polish doctor. He realised that most of his patients never came to him for respiratory or skin conditions and started researching into why. He discovered that these patients all
worked in the salt mines and that the miners were all benefitting daily from the naturally anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of the salt.
Family Salt Room
In our salt rooms we have recreated the natural microclimate of the salt mines and our specialist halogenerator machines grind the salt down into tiny microparticles and disperse it into the room. These particles are then breathed deeply into your respiratory tract. The salt helps get rid of any lurking bacteria and eases any inflammation in both the lungs (caused by excessive coughing) or the skin, affected by conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. It is also particularly helpful for shifting little one’s coughs and colds. As soon as ours start with the sniffles (which as you know once they start nursery seems to be quite often!) we whip them into the salt rooms. Not only does it help shift it quicker, they also sleep much better that night too. Contact us now to find out if we could help you.
IF YOU SUFFER FROM ANY OF THE FOLLOWING, SALT THERAPY COULD HELP YOU:

#LOVE YOUR GUT AND YOUR BODY WILL THANK YOU! Written by Claire Louise Rayner
#nopootaboo living in a world where normal bodily functions are seen as embarrassing , a dirty secret and something to be ashamed of no wonder we are seeing a rapid increase of IBS, symptoms of constipation, bloating, diarrhoea, pain and discomfort…..yet still we don’t talk about it! We are quick to complain of a headache, a backache even a urine infection…….but suffering in silence with pain associated with digestive issues…. It’s definitely time to make a change! Everyone poops! It’s a fact…..from the guy serving you in the supermarket, the premiership footballer to the infamous judge on the x-factor. The process of eating, the transfer of nutrients, where we gain vital minerals, vitamins, and healthy bacteria. Where we remove toxins, fermentation, mucous and the bad bacteria……..eating and digesting provide us with vital energy and the normal result of this is hopefully a daily trip to the loo! We aim for our amazing bodies complete this process swiftly, comfortably and efficiently! Within approximately 10-20 hours of our food entering our mouths we should be visiting the toilet. This is a mechanism that never sleeps, unbeknown to us it is working constantly keeping us energised, fuelled and healthy. THIS is the magnificent journey of digestion. Yet this normal process is something we hide, the unspoken part of our lives! During my career I decided to break down these taboos and make digestive health, nutrition, the elimination of waste a normal part of life! I am the girl who will always talk.
Gone are the days of seasonal eating, consuming our home grown vegetables and getting dairy and meat from our local farmer! We live in a world of chemicals, of processed convenience foods, takeout and tinned food….think about it, there are chemicals in everything, our meals, smoking, vaping, alcohol and painkillers, the vegetables, fruits and meats on our plates. A simple visit to the doctors will see you leaving with a prescription of yet more chemicals, are they totally necessary? It’s time to take back control of our digestive health, it’s time to take back the power and own our own bodies! We need to become aware of how the mechanics of our body work, understanding the process of digestion and leave the shame behind! This is my aim writing this monthly column, a small insight in to the troubles we meet concerning our digestive health in our daily life and offering tips on how we can help ourselves. It’s now time to take a different view! To turn away from the chemicals and toxins and look at the natural methods of healing our bodies! Colon cleansing is a fantastic way to care for your digestive health, taking on a 5-day juice fast, choosing to do one week a month following a vegetarian diet, all make a difference. It’s making the choice to live with a seasonal diet….no more buying pumpkins in June and strawberries in December…….it’s about healing and nourishing your body with good clean foods, …….keeping hydrated, keeping a balance I always encourage a 80-20 diet, 80 % of your food to be grown on the land or in the earth and 20% processed (you can still enjoy that glass of wine or Chinese takeout!) the key is to listen to your body and massively overdose from the earth with food, exercise and fresh air!
We live in a world of increasing sickness! Think about yourself, your friends, family, work colleagues, and notice that they are fatigued, tired, lack of energy??

BACK ACHE... OUCH!
By Shaun Sutcliffe: Massage Therapist. www.ultimatefitnessyork.co.uk Back pain is very common and normally improves within a few weeks or months. Pain in the lower back is particularly common, although it can be felt anywhere along the spine, from the neck down to the hips. In most cases the pain is not caused by anything serious and will usually get better over time.
HOW TO RELIEVE BACK PAIN
The following tips may help reduce your backache and speed up your recovery: • Stay as active as possible and try to continue your daily activities – this is one of the most important things you can do, as resting for long periods is likely to make the pain worse • Try exercises such as walking, swimming, Yoga or Pilates. • Use hot or cold compression packs for short-term relief – you can buy these from your local pharmacy, or a hot water bottle or a bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a cloth will work just as well.
GETTING HELP AND ADVICE
Back pain usually gets better on its own within a few weeks or months and you may not need to see a doctor or other healthcare professional. But, get help if: • the pain does not start to improve within a few weeks • the pain stops you doing your day-to-day activities • the pain is very severe or gets worse over time • you’re worried about the pain or are struggling to cope
• Check your posture when sitting, using computers and watching television. • Ensure the mattress on your bed supports you properly • Lose weight through a combination of a healthy diet and regular exercise if you›re overweight – being overweight can increase your risk of developing back pain
WHEN TO GET IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ADVICE
You should contact a GP or NHS 111 immediately if you have back pain and: • Numbness or tingling around your genitals or buttocks • Difficulty passing urine • loss of bladder or bowel control • Chest pain • A high temperature of 38C or above • Unexplained weight loss • A swelling or a deformity in your back • It does not improve after resting or is worse at night • It started after a serious accident, such as after a car accident These problems could be a sign of something more serious and need to be checked urgently.
Ultimate Fitness York & Pocklington
A Massage Therapist or Physiotherapist will provide help and advice where necessary and can signpost you towards the most appropriate treatment and self help.
CAUSES OF BACK PAIN
Often it’s not possible to identify the cause of back pain. Doctors call this non-specific back pain. Occasionally back pain can be caused by a medical condition such as: • A slipped (prolapsed) disc – where a disc of cartilage in the spine presses on a nearby nerve • Sciatica – irritation of the nerve that runs from the pelvis to the feet These conditions tend to cause additional symptoms, such as numbness, weakness or a tingling sensation, and they’re treated differently from non-specific back pain.
PREVENTING BACK PAIN
It’s difficult to prevent back pain, but the following tips may help reduce your risk: • Do regular back exercises and stretches – a Massage Therapist or Physiotherapist may be able to advise you about exercises to try • Stay active – doing regular exercise can help keep your back strong • Avoid sitting for too long when driving or at work • Take care when lifting – read some safe lifting tips

LET’S TALK ABOUT…
STRESS By Karen Hayward
Stress affects different people in different ways and a little bit of stress can be highly beneficial. It keeps us focussed on a goal and motivates us to take action. It releases hormones into the blood stream triggering our fight, flight or freeze response and in some cases, this can save our lives but long term, chronic stress can have a significant impact on both our physical and mental health. When we are talking about stress, its useful to consider what we mean by the term as stress can come in many forms. Some examples include; • Physical Stress – late nights, binge drinking, poor diet, illness • Environmental Stress – poor housing, social isolation, unemployment, new environments to adjust to such as moving to a new house or holidays • Emotional Stress – relationship problems, peer pressure, conflicting cultural values, leaving home, marriage, problems at work • Acute life events – bereavements, physical illness/accidents, arrest/imprisonment, pregnancy and childbirth, assault • Chronic Stress – accommodation problems, debts, prolonged use of drugs/alcohol What makes some people more vulnerable to stress than others then? Again, there are several different elements that come into play here. Genetics can play a role; evidence from family studies, particularly studies involving twins seems to show a strong genetic element. It seems that one aspect of a person’s vulnerability is related to their genetic make-up, but this is not the whole story. A person’s coping style will have an impact too. Those using effective coping mechanisms seem to deal with stress better than those that don’t. Their thinking style is important too. How someone thinks about themselves and their environment seems to make a major difference to their level of vulnerability as do their friendship groups – people with lots of supportive friends and family tend to do better in times of crises than those who don’t. So, what practical steps can you take to reduce your stress? The first step is to work out what is causing it. Get a piece of paper, draw a large circle on it and inside the circle, write down all the things that are causing you stress. On the left-hand side of the circle, list all your positive coping skills and on the right-hand side, list the negatives. Positive coping skills include things such as sleep, good food, friends, exercise, yoga, meditation. Negative coping skills are things such as alcohol, drugs, lack of sleep, lack of support, working excessively long hours. Look at small improvements you can make to increase the positive coping elements and reduce the negatives. Look at what is in the circle to see what you can reduce or eliminate all together. Mind, the mental health charity has a very useful section on stress reduction techniques and the NHS Mood Zone is also a very good source of hints and tips. 28 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE

Drain in a sieve and set aside to cool. 2 Heat oven to 180c/160c fan/gas mark 4. Whilst the oven is heating roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use it to line a 22cm loose bottomed tart tin. Chill in the fridge for 15 mins. Once chilled line the pastry with greaseproof paper and baking beans, then bake for 15 mins. Remove the beans and paper and cook for a further 10 mins until the base is a pale golden colour. Allow to cool. 3 Increase the oven temperature to 220c/200c fan/gas mark 7. Push the cooled pumpkin through the sieve into a large bowl. In a separate bowl combine the salt, sugar, nutmeg and half the cinnamon. Mix in the beaten eggs, melted butter and milk, then add to the pumpkin and stir well to combine. Pour over the pastry and cook for 10 mins, then reduce the oven temperature to 180c/160c fan/gas mark 4and continue to bake for 30_40 mins until the filling has set. 4 Leave to cool, then remove the pie from the tin. Mix the icing sugar and the remaining cinnamon and dust over the pie. Serve chilled with whipped fresh double cream.

Let any excess drip away before placing them on the baking tray covered with greaseproof paper. 6 Once the toffee has set, stir in an airtight container and eat within 24 hours. Do not place in a fridge. Please be careful when making the toffee and keep children away as it can cause serious burns.

GARDENING
TO DO IN OCTOBER FLOWERING PLANTS
• Cut back dead or withered summer flowers. Leave grasses and other sturdy plants that provide structure or seeds for birds. Some dead flower heads look especially attractive when dusted with frost. • Final planting for bulbs. • Dig up non hardy bulbs and dry them off. • Continue to dig up, divide and transplant any overly vigorous plants. • Plant spring bedding such as wallflowers, bellis, primulas and winter pansies for a fantastic spring display.
TREES AND SHRUBS
• Plant new trees and climbing plants and hedges. • Thin out or prune deciduous trees and climbing roses. • Begin pruning harvested fruit trees (but not apples as this is done in winter when the trees are dormant). Clear the bed around the base of the tree and cover with half rotted compost. • This is the ideal month to move shrubs and trees.
MAINTENANCE
• Rake up fallen leaves regularly from the lawn. Mow the lawn only once every two to three weeks, this month usually sees the last cut of the year. • Pile up autumn leaves and garden debris in a quiet corner for hedgehogs. • Protect guttering from becoming blocked with fallen leaves. • Use the last of the dry weather to paint sheds and fences with preservative before the winter arrives. • Check stored onions and garlic and remove any rotting bulbs immediately. The neck of the bulb is usually the first area to rot. • Make time to give evergreen hedges a final trim before the bad weather sets in, so they look neat and tidy for the winter. • Raise pots off the ground for the winter by using bricks or ‘pot feet’, to prevent waterlogging. • Invest in bird baths and bird feeders this autumn. Birds are gardeners friends and will keep pest numbers down.
FRUIT AND VE GETABLES
• Harvest plums and quince and the last of the late apples. • Remove any diseased fruits from branches or the ground as they will carry any infections over next year. • Dig compost or well rotted manure into beds which have been harvested. • Move citrus trees indoors to a bright frost free position, away from radiators and draughts. Reduce watering but don’t let dry out completely. • Divide congested clumps of rhubarb by digging up and splitting into several pieces with a spade. Replant the healthiest looking pieces. • Clear the straw from around the base of strawberry plants to increase ventilation. Shear back old foliage to encourage fresh new growth. 38 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
