THANKS TO... The volunteers and staff at WAVE who took part in the third annual local history fair at the City Archives on 17 November 2012. Over 25 local historical societies took part and more than 350 people attended this family friendly event. The Friends at Bantock House for their fundraising efforts, which paid for a new light fitting for the Drawing Room.

WOLVERHAMPTON’S WAR In the run-up to the commemoration of the start of the First World War in 2014, Wolverhampton City Archives has set up a blog in order to capture the stories of local people. Called Wolverhampton’s War, this blog will build up a picture of what Wolverhampton people experienced during the war, both at home and abroad. COMMUNITY CONSULTATION IN WEDNESFIELD
BILSTON IN BLOOM WINS SILVER GILT For the second year running, Bilston has won a silver gilt award from the Heart of England in Bloom competition. Bilston Craft Gallery’s garden, which is tended by Gallery volunteers, was commended by the judges for its cottage-style border planting and for its Queen’s Jubilee Hedge featuring saplings from the Royal estates and planted by volunteers. 4
Bilston Craft Gallery has worked with artists to deliver a range of workshops and events in Wednesfield to involve local residents and shoppers in the development of new art work being commissioned at Bentley Bridge retail park.

BAGS: THE CRAFT OF THE CARRYING COMPANION BILSTON GALLERY UNTIL 9 MARCH 2013 Today the handbag is one of the most celebrated products of branded design and retail. This exhibition presents the diversity of approaches contemporary craftspeople have taken to bags and accessory cases – objects where design, skilled manufacture and aesthetics meet. Bags are highly personal and functional companions that contain some of our most precious and necessary possessions. On show will be Sarah Williams’ beautifully made cases with cleverly designed organising compartments. Also featured are Lisa Farmer’s highly stylised leather containers inspired by living creatures. Examples of the new explosion of carrycases for our mobile accessories like phones and tablets will also be on show.
NORTHERN IRELAND GALLERY ART GALLERY UNTIL 6 APRIL 2013 The Gallery’s collection of art relating to the Troubles in Northern Ireland comes back on display this winter. This time it will include some of our new acquisitions purchased through the Heritage Lottery Fund Collecting Cultures project that we have developed jointly with the Herbert, Coventry. Portraits of Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness by Conrad Atkinson will be shown alongside works by Willie Doherty, Paul Graham and Jock McFadyen. POP HIGHLIGHTS ART GALLERY UNTIL 15 MAY 2013 A chance to see some of the key works from the Pop collection including work by Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton, Jann Haworth, Allen Jones and Andy Warhol. The exhibition will also feature some new Pop works gifted by Eric and Jean Cass through the Contemporary Art Society.

EDWIN BUTLER BAYLISS: POET PAINTER OF THE BLACK COUNTRY ART GALLERY 19 JANUARY – 27 APRIL 2013 Our long-awaited exhibition of work by Edwin Butler Bayliss will illustrate his importance as one of the few 19th century painters of the industrial landscape. The son of a local ironmaster, his inspiration came from the foundries of the Black Country, particularly the area around Bilston and Tipton close to the Hickman furnaces. The exhibition will include work by other artists inspired by the industrial landscape such as William Sidney Causer and Richard Samuel Chattock. Work by contemporary artists including Arthur Lockwood and Robert Perry also feature, exploring how the Black Country continues to inspire today.

The appearance of our high street has changed many times throughout history and in this exhibition we look at some of the shops and eating places that were once familiar to shoppers in the Wolverhampton area.

DAVID HANCOCK: COSPLAY ART GALLERY 3 FEBRUARY – 1 JUNE 2013 Manchester-based artist David Hancock explores the world of youth sub-cultures through his series based on Cosplayers. Characters from Japanese Manga and Animé are bought to life in these beautiful, photo-realist style paintings. He is interested in the psychological gap between the real and imagined worlds as experienced by the young people who engage in this form of escapism. By taking their characters into the urban environments they transfer the ordinary into a world of imagination and fantasy. Although the subject is modern the style is rooted in the romantic traditions of the Pre-Raphaelites, with each fold of fabric and every piece of foliage rendered in startling detail. ZED NELSON: LOVE ME ART GALLERY 16 FEBRUARY – 8 JUNE 2013 [An Impressions Gallery and Ffotogallery Touring Exhibition in collaboration with Lighthouse Media Centre] Love Me reflects on the cultural and commercial forces that drive a global obsession with youth and beauty. Over a period of five years Zed Nelson visited eighteen countries across five continents, photographing cosmetic surgeons, beauty queens and bodybuilders alongside everyday teenagers, housewives and businessmen. In Love Me, Zed Nelson has produced a powerful body of work that forces every one of us to question our own place in a culture that compels us to constantly judge, and be judged, by our appearance. The exhibition is divided into two parts with half showing at the Art Gallery and half a short walk away at Lighthouse Media Centre.
MADE IN THE MIDDLE BILSTON GALLERY 23 MARCH – 11 MAY 2013 Made in the Middle introduces a wealth of talented makers from across the Midlands in the seventh in the series of this touring exhibition by Craftspace. The exhibition features cutting edge work by contemporary makers from the East and West Midlands across a wide range of media. TIPPING POINT ART GALLERY 11 MAY – 6 JULY 2013 A tipping point is defined as the level at which the momentum for change becomes unstoppable. Critical intersections in the unstable future of our environments and economies have also brought about knock-on effects including migration, conflict and political instability.
ALL LOCKED UP BANTOCK HOUSE 9 MAY – 11 AUGUST 2013 Wolverhampton has a rich heritage in the Lock industry and manufacturers such as Chubb became internationally famous for their security products. The exhibition will include displays of locks and keys from the city’s collection, alongside the history of the industry. 8
This group exhibition centres on global climate change and the ways that artists have chosen to highlight these issues. Featuring the responses of national and international artists, this exhibition will showcase a range of artistic practices; from material-led interventions into our environment, through to cross-disciplinary research in partnership with scientists and ecologists, and documentation of social activism. Artists include Heather and Ivan Morison, Anya Gallaccio, Dalziel and Scullion,
STORYTELLING: ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE MIDLANDS BILSTON GALLERY 25 MAY – 24 AUGUST 2013 Explore newly commissioned craft work created in response to the rich storytelling and folklore traditions of the Black Country and the West Midlands.
Lori Nix, Virginia Colwell, Merel Karhof and the Paris-based collective He He. The exhibition will also provide an opportunity to view an exciting new commission by Gerry Judah, who undertook a research trip to India organised in association with Christian Aid, to see for himself how climate change has affected the inhabitants of some of the most densely populated cities on earth. TRACED (4) WOLVERHAMPTON ART GALLERY Tracing the success of art and design in Wolverhampton from 1850–1970, this display brings together works by teachers and students and shows how Wolverhampton School of Art established a national reputation for sculpture.

Following top-to-toe refurbishment, Sensing Sculpture reopens on Saturday 2 March. Alongside family favourites there are new commissions and previously un-displayed works from the Art Gallery’s collection. There are new activity stations, audio points, videos, poems inspired by the works on show and some comfy seating too. And, of course, you can still touch the sculptures on display.
In the sumptuous surroundings of the Georgian gallery you will find grand paintings from the period alongside interactive exhibits that provide a hands-on look at key themes of the day, from scientific discoveries to the scandals of the theatrical world, offering a flavour of life in the 18th century.
THE BILLIARD ROOM BANTOCK HOUSE MUSEUM Baldwin Bantock’s original billiard room has been recreated to offer an interactive look at the lives of six great men from Victorian Wolverhampton. Find out more about the skills, trades and people that made Wolverhampton famous.
THE DRAWING ROOM (6) BANTOCK HOUSE MUSEUM Items from the Bantock family’s own collection, including beautiful pieces of English porcelain are displayed together in the original oak cabinets. Experience the rooms as they would have been when the Bantock family occupied the house 100 years ago.

MAKERS DOZEN ARTIST STUDIOS The Makers Dozen studios are a complex of thirteen workshop spaces for both new graduates and established artist makers in the West Midlands region. The studios reflect the historic role the Art Gallery played in art education in the city, when Wolverhampton’s School of Art was based here. The artist spaces are located in a row of Georgian shops, with a contemporary extension linking them to the original Victorian building.
