An award-winning gallery offering fantastic collections of contemporary art and sumptuous displays of Victorian and Georgian paintings as well as a nationally acclaimed Pop Art collection. Explore the interactive permanent exhibition Materials and Making: Sculpture and Craft from the gallery’s collection or enjoy a peaceful afternoon in the first floor café.
Celebrating the heritage of Bilston, the gallery displays a collection of items from the industrial era along with the Bilston mayoral regalia.
Bantock House Museum Set in a 43 acre park Bantock House Museum is restored to its former Edwardian glory. Explore the former family home and discover stories about the Bantocks or wander through our formal garden area, café and courtyard.
City Archives An award-winning service housing a wealth of materials relating to the history of Wolverhampton. Constantly growing, the Archives’ vast collections include maps, books, census returns, newspapers, records from local schools, churches, clubs, societies and businesses, electoral registers and indexes to births, deaths and marriages. There are also over 30,000 photographs plus films, sound recordings, memorabilia and much more, all available to view.

The Bloomsbury Effect Wolverhampton Art Gallery On until Sun 16 Feb Visitors can enjoy a display of three prestigious early 20th century British paintings on loan from the Courtauld Gallery, London. This presentation is part of an ongoing collaboration which celebrates the links between Wolverhampton and the Courtauld Collection through the Courtaulds textile company. Free admission

Wolverhampton Society of Artists Centenary Exhibition Wolverhampton Art Gallery On until Sun 16 Feb This exhibition celebrates the centenary of Wolverhampton Society of Artists (WSA) and its continuous partnership with Wolverhampton Art Gallery. The exhibition documents the story of the Society from when it was formed in 1919 featuring a selection of works by WSA’s alumni including paintings, drawings and sculptures, alongside some archival material.

It also showcases contextual works highlighting the history and achievements of WSA against the wider development of British art in the period 1919 – 1929. The final section showcases works by current members of the Society. Free admission

50 Years On: The Northern Ireland Collection Revisited Wolverhampton Art Gallery On until 15 Mar Since the 1980s Wolverhampton Art Gallery has built up a unique and nationally important collection of art relating to the period of conflict in Northern Ireland and other parts of the UK known as the Troubles. This exhibition presents for the first time a new acquisition, Rocket Man by Northern Irish artist Gerry Gleason, and revisits highlights from the collection, 50 years on from the start of the Troubles and 20 years after the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement. Tim Mara: Not Pop? Wolverhampton Art Gallery On until 8 Mar This exhibition is the first posthumous survey of work by respected Irish artist Tim Mara (1948 – 97). It brings together prints from Wolverhampton Art Gallery’s collection and items from the artist’s family and Advanced Graphics London. Mara studied at Wolverhampton Polytechnic from 1970-3 and several of the works in the exhibition were made in the city. He became known for his skill and innovativeness as a printmaker and worked as an artist and teacher for 25 years, becoming Professor of Printmaking at the Royal College of Art. Free admission
Tim Mara Panel Discussion Wolverhampton Art Gallery Sat 7 Mar, 11.30am Join us for a panel discussion about the work of Tim Mara. The event presents a unique opportunity to hear from a panel of celebrated art world figures, each of whom had a personal connection to Mara. Wolverhampton and Me Wolverhampton Art Gallery Sat 11 Jan – Sun 5 Apr Wolverhampton and Me uses the story of the Mayor of Wolverhampton’s family history to reflect on the wider history of the city and its people. From its roots in England and Ireland, the Mayor’s family tree has developed links around the world – much like the global links of the city itself. It tells a complex story of migration and change. At the heart of the exhibition a specially designed family tree is used as a vehicle for exploring social and political changes and the ways these impact on individuals’ lives. This will be presented with items relating to the Mayor’s family 8
members, as well as works on the theme of family from the Art Gallery’s collection. Visitors are invited to explore their own family links through an interactive map and resources available from the City Archives. This exhibition has been initiated by Councillor Claire Darke, Mayor of Wolverhampton and her Consort Dr Paul Darke. Free admission

Topics of discussion will include the use of the family tree as a metaphor for the city and the nation and one that represents global shifts in migration and social changes through the lives of members of a single family. Meera Syal: COMING HOME Wolverhampton Art Gallery Sat 11 Jan – Sun 5 Apr Meera Syal: COMING HOME presents a portrait of the renowned comedian, author and actor Meera Syal by celebrity photographer Jason Bell, on loan from the National Portrait Gallery, London. Bell’s photograph of Syal is the result of a collaboration between artist and sitter. It exposes the techniques used to create a portrait and pokes fun at Bollywood stereotypes, a recurring theme in Syal’s work.

The National Portrait Gallery’s COMING HOME project sees the Gallery sending portraits of well-known individuals to places they are closely associated with. Fifty artworks from the national portraiture collection will travel to towns and cities across the country. Visitors are encouraged to tell us what home means to them by leaving comments on luggage tags provided in the exhibition. The responses will contribute to a specially composed poem by Wolverhampton’s Poet Laureate, Emma Purshouse. Free admission

Toy Theatre Sheets Bantock House Museum Sat 11 Jan – Sun 29 Mar The art of making toy theatres dates back to the early 1800s. Miniature stages, prosceniums characters, scenery and props were printed onto paper from copper plates and sold by publishers and stationers as individual sheets. From Victorian melodramas to pantomimes and historical romances, this exhibition takes a closer look at those uncut sheets and the art behind their design. Free admission

Wolverhampton Young Photographer 2019 Wolverhampton Art Gallery Sat 25 Jan – Fri 21 Feb Wolverhampton Young Photographer 2019 showcases over 50 photographs by this year’s competition finalists, all aged 18 or under. The selected entries have been taken on a variety of devices from mobile phones to high-end SLR cameras and include portraits, landscapes and wildlife photography as well as creative images using visual effects. This year’s special category is ‘movement’. Wolverhampton Young Photographer Competition is organised by Wolverhampton Photographic Society and last year attracted over 200 entries from young people within the WV postcode area. The exhibition is also sponsored by Tettenhall Rotary Club, with prizes sponsored by local businesses.

Victoria & Albert: Our Lives in Watercolour Wolverhampton Art Gallery Sat 7 Mar – Sun 31 May To mark the bicentenary of the births of both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 2019, a touring exhibition from the Royal Collection will explore the royal couple’s collecting of watercolours as a record of their public and private lives together. Travelling to three museums and galleries across the country, Victoria & Albert: Our Lives in Watercolour will feature almost 70 works from Victoria and Albert’s collection, several of which will be on public display for the first time. Phoebe Cummings: This Was Now Wolverhampton Art Gallery Sat 7 Mar – Sun 31 May This exhibition explores ceramics as a time-based medium and seeks to understand the multiple ways we might record transient sculpture; individually and collectively. Currently one of the most interesting British ceramic artists, Phoebe Cummings will create a new work in raw clay within the gallery space, which will continue to evolve over the course of the exhibition. The gallery will operate as a site of live production and research where the

public are invited to be active in the process of recording the changing work through drawing and writing, which will also grow and accumulate across the gallery wall. An album of these public responses will be created as a permanent trace of the project, whilst the sculpture itself will be recycled and the clay taken forward in future works. Free admission

Fossil Fuelled – Prehistory to Powerhouse Bilston Gallery The story of Bilston begins with its internationally important rocks and fossils. These precious minerals made it possible for industry to flourish and with it the creativity and ingenuity that helped to define the region. Arriving in the exhibition you will be greeted by a Sunbeam motorcycle and a three-metre long Dromaeosaurus. The exhibition features objects from many of the town’s industries, including cut steel jewellery, bicycles and the world-famous Bilston Enamels. You’ll also learn about famous Bilston companies including Sankey, Beldray and Sunbeam. 18
We have a family-friendly dinosaur room which is home to Barry the Baryonyx, real fossils from the Dr. Fraser Collection and dinosaur fossil casts such as the famous Archaeopteryx, T.rex and Triceratops. You can design your own dinosaur and even dress up like one! Additional interpretation includes custom made videos explaining more about the region’s history and geology. Free admission

Materials and Making: Sculpture and Craft from the Gallery’s Collection Wolverhampton Art Gallery Materials and Making showcases a selection of sculpture, ceramics and glass from the Art Gallery’s collection. The exhibition features historical and contemporary sculptural objects which are richly textured and made from different materials using a variety of processes and techniques. The abundance of shapes and patterns on display invites visitors to explore and enjoy their surfaces and forms, some of which can be touched. Free admission

Bantock’s regular antiques fair is widely regarded as one of the best in the region. Dozens of traders descend on Bantock to offer everything from costume jewellery to ceramics and furniture. JOHN EDGAR - INTERSIGNS - TALES FROM A BRETON FIRESIDE TRANSLATED AND RETOLD BY JOHN EDGAR ‘Nobody dies without an intersign. They’re like shadows, pictures of what’s going to happen.’
For his third Literature Festival dip into Breton folklore, John Edgar brings us another dark and bleakly comic compilation of ‘wonderfully feral’ stories from a land where everything ultimately depends on your dealings with the other side. Tickets: £6.50 (+ booking fee) 3.30pm – 4.30pm
DAISY BLACK - MAPPA MUNDI ‘Here, I found beasts like minotaurs, useful for war’. Let the twelve winds blow you to the far corners of the Earth; meet mermaids and mandrakes; and follow the trail of Adam’s burnt footprints all the way back to Eden. Storyteller Daisy Black takes you on a tour around the medieval map of the world. A show full of marvels, including saints and giants, heroes and devils, grisly cannibals and Norwegian skiers. Weaving together medieval maps and travel writing with oral storytelling, this show is your passport to see the world through fourteenth-century eyes. CATH EDWARDS TALES FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE A deliciously chilling collection of stories: ghosts, hauntings and mysterious occurrences. Some of these tales are creepy, some are poignant, some are even funny – just don’t walk home alone! Tickets: £6.50 (+ booking fee)

TIM RALPHS - REBRANDING BEELZEBUB Rebranding Beelzebub shines a spotlight on Him Downstairs in a performance shaped by razor wit, diabolical horror, absurd confessions and guffaws fit for the unholy host. Tim presents innovative re-imaginings of traditional tales as he exhumes the bones of old Devil stories and stitches them a new skin. This grand collection spans supermarket stalls, urban sprawls, mad drunken preachers and widow’s sons. Darkly humorous with disturbing turns and a distinct whiff of sulphur. CHAIN REACTION (AN ALCHEMY OF STORIES) Bantock Coach House is being taken over for the evening to bring together an alchemy of storytellers for this multi-voice storytelling night. When storytellers get together, wonderful things can happen - one teller's tales will set another teller thinking and so the story thread evolves into a rich tapestry of fables. This performance will never be repeated in quite the same way again - don't miss it! With Tim Ralphs, Daisy Black, Cath Edwards and John Edgar. Tickets: £9 (+ booking fee)

Introduction to Family History Wolverhampton City Archives Fri 28 Feb, 10.30am – 1.30pm (six week course) A six week course (Friday mornings) designed for complete beginners and those who have done a little research but don’t know what to do next. Participants will finish the course with the knowledge of where to find records and the confidence to use them to trace at least one line of their own family history back to the early 1800s. This course will cover birth, marriage and death registration, and the census records, before moving on to military, criminal, employment, and many other records, which tell the unique story of each person’s family.

To participate it is not necessary to have family roots in the City of Wolverhampton or the Black Country, as the records are the same for all of England and Wales, and Scottish records are very similar. For those with roots outside of the UK this is a good starting place as, by understanding English records, it is then possible to move on to researching overseas. £30 per person for the six week course. Friends of Wolverhampton Art Gallery
Friends of Bantock House and Museum
The Friends play a vital role in helping the Gallery to develop the permanent collections by supporting the acquisition of new works. Since the group was first formed in the 1970s the Friends have supported the acquisition of many new works. By joining the Friends you will be able to take part in a range of activities, lectures and coach trips. Annual membership is £10 for individuals and a family membership is £15. The Friends is a registered charity raising funds to support the council in developing the Museum and Park’s full potential and plays a vital role in promoting and preserving this place of local heritage for the local community, and visitors from further afield. Periodic newsletters are sent out to members to inform them of the group’s activities and plans. Funds raised through subscription fees, quarterly valuation days and a presence at other organised events, have enabled purchases to be made to enhance the experience of visiting the museum and park. Over the years these have included period fixtures and furnishings for the house, and more recently autumn planting in the Dutch Garden and the replacement of the Lutyens bench in there.
