Second Generation Asian Community within the Black Country and Birmingham Wolverhampton City Archives This exhibition provides an insight into the lives of second generation British Indian people who were born between 1967 and 1983 and raised in Birmingham or the Black Country. Through a collection of twenty-five oral history interviews and photographs, we discover how

their worlds overlap, fit and collide with the ‘traditional’ Indian values of their parents and British values of their peers. Second Generation celebrates children born to migrants from India and how they have come to play a crucial role in modern British society. 3

The Stavordale Marionettes Bantock House The Stavordale Marionettes were one of the first companies in the UK to secure advertising contracts with their puppets. This included a successful run for The Gas Council with their mascot, Mr Therm and Sir Kreemy Knut from sweet and toffee manufacturer Sharp and Sons. On TV they were puppeteers on Gerry Anderson’s early series Supercar and the BBC’s Andy Pandy. This exhibition features original puppets of both Mr Therm and Sir Kreemy Knut and a range of characters from their own successful shows which toured the country.

New exhibitions

Wayang Golek Rod Puppets of Indonesia Bantock House 2 July – 29 September This exhibition looks at traditional carved wooden rod puppets from western Java dating back to the 16th century. These exquisite carvings are known for performing traditional Javanese tales and plays from the Ramayana and Mahabharata combining Hindu stories with Buddhist and Muslim ideas and Javanese folklore.

The Early Trade Unions Wolverhampton City Archives 3 July – 28 September A plaque in the Civic Centre refers to five tin-plate workers who were transported to Tasmania in 1819 (200 years ago this year) for the crime of being members of a union. But what is the truth behind this story? This display will explore some of the early trade unions in Wolverhampton.

Reframing the Wild: Humans, Animals and Art 1750-1950 Wolverhampton Art Gallery 5 July – 15 September Reframing the Wild explores the relationships between humans, animals and artworks from 1750 to 1950, drawing on Wolverhampton’s collections of animal paintings, photography, hunting traps, and decorative art objects. It provides historical background to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition and asks: ‘How have humans shaped understandings of the wild through artworks and how have animals contributed towards artworks?’ The exhibition is co-curated with staff from the University of Birmingham's Department of Art History, Curating and Visual Studies.

New exhibitions

MA Show Wolverhampton Art Gallery 20 – 26 September The exhibition showcases the work of students graduating from the University of Wolverhampton ranging from ceramics, glass and photography. Glass work by Suraya Meah

Tim Mara Wolverhampton Art Gallery 21 September 2019 – 29 March 2020 This exhibition brings together a selection of works by the Irish printmaker Tim Mara, featuring artworks from Wolverhampton Art Gallery’s collection alongside loans from his family and Advanced Graphics London. Mara studied at Wolverhampton Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art, London in the 1970s and later became Head of Printmaking at the RCA in 1990. His prints are heavily populated with details, colour and patterns; they are crammed with visual clues that seem to lead to possible narratives and plots.

His work has been wrongly associated with Pop Art due to the use of saturated colours and everyday objects as subject matter. However, Mara cites instead Velazquez and Vermeer as much more direct references.

Painted Ladies: An Exchange of Ideas Wolverhampton Art Gallery On Until September

Alfred Egerton Cooper, Alfred Egerton (1883 – 1974). Lady in Red Velvet, image courtesy of the artist’s estate.

Painted Ladies is a display of 20th century paintings depicting women painted by both female and male artists including Emma Bolland, Dorette Outlaw and Alfred Egerton Cooper. Many of the works on display have not been shown for many years. The exhibition invites visitors to think about the ways that female and male artists have represented women in art. The exhibition also invites visitors to

consider the Victorian collection in the Gallery and observe how the representation of women may have changed since the Victorian era. Painted Ladies is an attempt to raise questions and invite viewers to participate in the conversation, and to share their thoughts, ideas and insights.

This exhibition is a collaboration between Wolverhampton Art Gallery and the University of Birmingham, curated by Rafailia Thiraiou, MA student in Art History and Curating.

Introduction to Family History Wolverhampton City Archives 15 June for six weeks Saturdays only A 6-week course designed for complete beginners and those who have done a little research but don’t know what to do next. Participants will finish the course with the knowledge of where to find records and the confidence to use them to trace at least one line of their own family history back to the early 1800s. They will be advised on the basics of birth, marriage and death registration, and the census records, before moving on to military, criminal, employment, and many other records, which tell the unique story of each person’s family. To participate it is not necessary to have family roots in the City of Wolverhampton or the Black Country, as the records are the same for all of England and Wales, and Scottish records are very

similar. For those with roots outside of the UK this is a good starting place as, by understanding English records, it is then possible to move on to researching overseas. £30 per person for the six week course. Book in advance by calling 01902 552055

John Grayson Talk: Enamel | Substrate: Investigating the craft of the 18th century enamel trade Wolverhampton Art Gallery 29 June 11am The West Midlands, especially Bilston, Wednesbury and Birmingham, was the centre of the 18th century enamel trade, manufacturing items from snuffboxes to candlesticks. Within historical literature, copper substrate, the metal shape upon which the enamel was applied, is overlooked. Dr John Grayson (Birmingham City University) summarises his PhD investigation 16

into this aspect of the trade and reveals how the Wolverhampton Art Gallery enamel collection was critical to his research. The talk narrates the context to enamel production and consumption, reveals the methods of manufacture used, and explains the trade’s legacy. £2 – pay on the door

The Friends play a vital role in helping the Gallery to develop the permanent collections by supporting the acquisition of new works. Since the group was first formed in the 1970s the Friends have supported the acquisition of many new works. By joining the Friends you will be able to take part in a range of activities, lectures and coach trips. Annual membership is £10 for individuals and a family membership is £15. Please contact the Membership Secretary, Michael Neal for an application form, michael_neal72@outlook.com

The Friends is a registered charity raising funds to support the Council in developing the Museum and Park’s full potential and plays a vital role in promoting and preserving this place of local heritage for the local community, and visitors from further afield. Periodic newsletters are sent out to members to inform them of the group’s activities and plans. Funds raised through subscription fees, quarterly valuation days and a presence at other organised events, have enabled purchases to be made to enhance the experience of visiting the museum and park. Over the years these have included period fixtures and furnishings for the house, and more recently autumn planting in the Dutch Garden and the replacement of the Lutyens bench in there. Annual membership subscription fees are £10 for a single person and £15 for a household. For details of becoming a member, email: bantockfriends@ virginmedia.com or call 01902 331272
