Tim Mara, The Second Room (detail) 1971 – 3 © The artist’s estate
This exhibition is the first posthumous survey of work by respected Irish artist Tim Mara (1948 – 97). It brings together prints from Wolverhampton Art Gallery’s collection and items from the artist’s family and Advanced Graphics London. Mara studied at Wolverhampton Polytechnic from 1970-3 and several of the works in the exhibition were made in the city. He became known for his skill and innovativeness as a printmaker and worked as an artist and
teacher for 25 years, becoming Professor of Printmaking at the Royal College of Art. Mara’s work has been associated with Pop Art and many of his prints display characteristics of the movement. However, he did not consider himself to be a Pop artist and instead cited 17th century painters including Diego Velázquez and Johannes Vermeer as his main sources of inspiration.

Overlooked Overlookers (Meena Dhanda) Wolverhampton Art Gallery Wed 20 Nov 10.30am – 3pm
Join experts on South Asian diaspora studies from the University of Wolverhampton team with Community Education Academy of Leadership (CEAL), pioneers in cataloguing stories of overlooked women textile workers, to facilitate a sharing of memories of these early migrants’ experience. Race, gender, class and religion have figured in the stories collected thus far by CEAL but what about caste? In the first half of this workshop, we will rekindle memories by collectively viewing archival images of overlocking machines in the company of workmates, friends
and families. Research findings on caste in Britain will be briefly shared and further triggers to memory will be provided through the touch of old fabrics, labels and buttons. Hidden stories of bonds and breakups, laughter and tears, troubles and struggles, involving co-workers, employers, families and friends will be voiced. In the second half, the women’s stories will be used to create a patchwork for display using fabrics, threads and needles. Free but booking essential. For more information and to book go to Eventbrite and search 'Overlooked, Overlockers'.

Friends and Donors
Friends of Wolverhampton Art Gallery
Friends of Bantock House and Museum
The Friends play a vital role in helping the Gallery to develop the permanent collections by supporting the acquisition of new works. Since the group was first formed in the 1970s the Friends have supported the acquisition of many new works. By joining the Friends you will be able to take part in a range of activities, lectures and coach trips. Annual membership is £10 for individuals and a family membership is £15. Please contact the Membership Secretary, Michael Neal for an application form, michael_neal72@outlook.com
The Friends is a registered charity raising funds to support the council in developing the Museum and Park’s full potential and plays a vital role in promoting and preserving this place of local heritage for the local community, and visitors from further afield. Periodic newsletters are sent out to members to inform them of the group’s activities and plans. Funds raised through subscription fees, quarterly valuation days and a presence at other organised events, have enabled purchases to be made to enhance the experience of visiting the museum and park. Over the years these have included period fixtures and furnishings for the house, and more recently autumn planting in the Dutch Garden and the replacement of the Lutyens bench in there. Annual membership subscription fees are £10 for a single person and £15 for a household. For details of becoming a member, email: bantockfriends@ virginmedia.com or call 01902 331272
Friends of Wolverhampton City Archives The Friends is an independent group supporting and promoting the work of the Archives. We have a programme of regular meetings held at the Archives on the first Thursday of each month. Membership, with regular newsletter, is £10 p.a. or come along as a visitor for £2 per meeting. Contact: Penny or Jackie on friendswolvesarchives@ gmail.com for further information or visit friendsofwca.org
