EDUCATION

GOLDIE LOVES WOLVERHAMPTON Internationally acclaimed musician, actor and artist Goldie has been praising Wolverhampton in a new campaign encouraging people in the city and beyond to explore its cultural offering. The former Heath Town resident started his career as a graffiti artist in the city, and in a short film credits the experiences he had here as making him the successful artist he is today, saying that culture in Wolverhampton ‘feeds the soul’. Watch the video now at: www.goldieloveswolverhampton.co.uk

TIPPING POINT ART GALLERY UNTIL 6 JULY 2013 A ‘tipping point’ is defined as the level at which the momentum for change becomes unstoppable. This group exhibition centres on global climate change and showcases a range of artistic responses to the environmental and humanitarian issues associated with it, currently and in the future. The exhibition features acclaimed international artists including Turner Prize winner Simon Starling, nominees Darren Almond and Anya Gallaccio, alongside Virginia Colwell, HeHe, Merel Karhof, John Kelly, Heather and Ivan Morison, Katie Paterson and Lori Nix. The exhibition also includes an exciting new commission by Gerry Judah, inspired by a research trip to India in association with international development agency Christian Aid. A series of events relating to the environment has been programmed alongside this exhibition (please see pages 10, 14 and 15).

ZED NELSON: LOVE ME ART GALLERY UNTIL 8 JUNE 2013 [An Impressions Gallery and Ffotogallery Touring Exhibition in collaboration with Light House Media Centre] Love Me reflects on the cultural and commercial forces that drive a global obsession with youth and beauty. Over a period of five years Zed Nelson visited

eighteen countries across five continents, photographing cosmetic surgeons, beauty queens and bodybuilders alongside everyday teenagers, housewives and businessmen. In Love Me, Zed Nelson has produced a powerful body of work that forces every one of us to question our own place in a culture that compels us to constantly judge, and be judged, by our appearance. The exhibition is divided into two parts with half showing at the Art Gallery and half a short walk away at Light House Media Centre.

ALL LOCKED UP: A SECURE PROFESSION BANTOCK HOUSE 9 MAY – 11 AUGUST 2013 Wolverhampton has a rich heritage in the lock industry and manufacturers such as Chubb became internationally famous for their security products. The exhibition will include displays of locks and keys from the city’s collection, alongside the history of the industry. 5

EXHIBITIONS continued...

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE MIDLANDS… BILSTON GALLERY UNTIL 24 AUGUST 2013 Have you heard of the polar bears that escaped from Dudley Zoo and roam the limestone caverns beneath Dudley Castle? Or what about the Anglo-Saxon King Wild Edric who sleeps beneath the Stiperstones in Shropshire with his army… it’s said they will wake and ride out to protect Britain if danger threatens the nation.

The Missing by Betty Pepper © The Artist

Explore some of the rich stories, folklore and urban myth of the Midlands brought to life through imaginative and magical works of contemporary craft. You’ll be intrigued by a varied range of objects including toys and automata, jewellery, glass and embroidery that illustrate local stories, whether humorous, romantic or mysterious. The exhibition includes many new craftworks created in response to some of these stories by makers and artists whose work is inspired by narrative and character.

WOLVERHAMPTON AND THE NEWCOMEN ENGINE IN 1712 CITY ARCHIVES 1 JUNE – 31 JULY 2013 In 1712, Wolverhampton was already famous for its steel ‘toys’: shoe buckles, watch chains and jewellery. But when Thomas Newcomen arrived in town with his ground-breaking steam engine, the world was about to change forever. This exhibition includes documents that show why the Wolverhampton Civic and Historical Society think the Industrial Revolution actually started in our city.

PAULINE BOTY: POP ARTIST AND WOMAN ART GALLERY 1 JUNE – 16 NOVEMBER 2013 The work of Pauline Boty (19381966), a key member of the British Pop Art movement, both celebrates and critiques mass cultural experience, exploring themes of female sexuality, gender, race and politics. This is the first public exhibition to survey her career as a whole, reinstating her at the forefront of British Pop Art. This vibrant display of paintings, collages and ephemera from public and private collections includes some pieces that have not been exhibited for 40 years. Colour Her Gone by Pauline Boty (1962) © Artist’s Estate Purchased with the assistance of the Art Fund and the Friends of Wolverhampton Art Gallery & Museums.

JOHN HAMPTON ART GALLERY 15 JUNE – 13 JULY 2013 An exhibition of vibrant works by Wolverhampton artist John Hampton (1934-2012). Educated and trained in Bilston, Wolverhampton and Birmingham, John was a dynamic character and had an inquisitive approach to his artwork. His career spanned over five decades, during which he became Head of Art at Bilston Community College. A studio holder at Eagle Works, he was an active member of the group. This show focuses on his later works that were inspired by the garden, resulting in this colourful display of expressive and painterly compositions.

CONTEMPORARY ART ART GALLERY 29 JUNE – 5 OCTOBER 2013 Our contemporary collection will be on display this summer with new works acquired through the Art Fund Renew Scheme. This is a joint collecting initiative with the Imperial War Museum, focusing on work that reflects the conflict in Israel and Palestine.

WOLVERHAMPTON MOTOR INDUSTRY EXHIBITION CITY ARCHIVES 1 JULY – 30 SEPTEMBER 2013 An exhibition looking at the history of the motor industry in Wolverhampton, including Guy Motors and Sunbeam. Sunbeam ‘Silver Bullet’ from 1930 © City Archives

RON MUECK: ARTIST ROOMS ART GALLERY 20 JULY – 2 NOVEMBER 2013 For our third ARTIST ROOMS presentation, we are showing the work of internationally renowned sculptor Ron Mueck. His work explores timeless themes, encouraging us as viewers to identify with the human condition. He plays with scale and placement to create dramatic narratives which link the real world with myth and folklore. The exhibition includes work on loan from Tate/NGS ARTIST ROOMS collection and pieces from private collections rarely seen in the UK. Wild Man (2005) © Ron Mueck ARTIST ROOMS Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland. Acquired jointly through The d’Offay Donation with assistance from the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the Art Fund 2008

ARTIST ROOMS On Tour is a partnership with Arts Council England and the Art Fund, making available the ARTIST ROOMS collection of international modern and contemporary art to galleries throughout the UK. ARTIST ROOMS is jointly owned by Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland and was established through The d’Offay Donation in 2008, with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Art Fund, and the Scottish and British Governments. 7

EXHIBITIONS continued...

A BACKWARD GLANCE CITY ARCHIVES 2–30 AUGUST 2013 An exhibition of early 20th and 21st century photography by Sid and Chris Manley. This father and son exhibition spans nearly 90 years of photography: Sid Manley working in the mid-1920s, producing long exposure night photographs on glass negatives, and his son Chris retaking the same locations in 2013, with a contemporary eye, using high-resolution digital cameras. Chris curated this exhibition, which focuses on his father’s work and offers a unique social viewpoint of the world between the two world wars, giving us a personal perspective of a time gone by. Queen’s Cinema Square by Sid Manley © Chris Manley

ON PARADE – THE REAL DAD’S ARMY BANTOCK HOUSE 15 AUGUST – 20 OCTOBER 2013 When Baldwin Bantock died in 1938, he bequeathed his house and grounds to Wolverhampton Corporation. The property didn’t open as a museum until 1948 and during the Second World War the building became a radio control centre for the Home Guard. Find out about the real Dad’s Army and what went on at Bantock House. 8

BEAUTY IS THE FIRST TEST: CONTEMPORARY CRAFT AND MATHEMATICS BILSTON GALLERY 7 SEPTEMBER – 2 NOVEMBER 2013 Mathematics is often the subject that both adults and children dread most – this exhibition uses contemporary craft to take a fresh look at the fundamental importance of maths in design including visual aesthetics and making processes. Objects in a range of materials with rich colour, pattern, and shape invite us to explore some of the principles of symmetry, geometry and form in an enjoyable and playful way. The show features work by many leading makers including Ann Sutton, weaver, Michael Brennand-Wood, textiles, mixed media and embroidery, and Peter Randall Page, sculptor.

ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE ART GALLERY

UNTIL 22 JUNE

29 JUNE – 27 JULY

The Creative Connections exhibition showcases the work of professional artists who have recently taken part in this course, run by Wolverhampton Adult Education Service. Work on display will include abstract painting, jewellery and printmaking.

This exhibition, developed by Blue Coat Junior School, Walsall, includes 10 themed decorated suitcases, each depicting the oral histories of Black Country World War II evacuees collected during a year-long school project funded by the Heritage Fund.

Bilston Craft Gallery’s textile group presents a showcase of textile art inspired by the history, colours and contrasts within our rich Black Country Heritage. The exhibition illustrates the diversity of work and practice of the group’s artists.

MAKERS DOZEN ARTIST STUDIOS The Makers Dozen studios are a complex of thirteen workshop spaces for both new graduates and established artist makers in the West Midlands region. The studios reflect the historic role the Art Gallery played in art education in the city, when Wolverhampton’s School of Art was based here. The artist spaces are located in a row of Georgian shops, with a contemporary extension linking them to the original Victorian building. To find out more about the resident artists makers and open studio events go to: www.makersdozen.co.uk

IMAGININGS, MEANDERS AND MAPS BILSTON GALLERY 3 AUGUST – 31 AUGUST The work in this exhibition is a contemplation of simple fabrics and stitches, which led artist Deborah Roberts to think of old maps. Keeping to a palette of white, grey and black has given the opportunity to highlight the structures and beauty of simplicity.

SNAPSHOTS OF MUMBAI ART GALLERY 3 AUGUST – 31 AUGUST An exploration of the city, combining the photography of Paul Ward and the words of Ed King. It introduces the wider city through a personal narrative and is a modern reminder of the historical relationships between India and the UK. www.snapshotsofmumbai.com

Each time the photo is taken from exactly the same spot. Each series mainly shows the changes in vegetation during the course of the four seasons.

HITTING THE RIGHT NOTES BILSTON GALLERY 7 SEPTEMBER – 5 OCTOBER An exhibition of sculptural wall panels and small 3D constructions by Shropshire based artist/maker Jane Wilson. All the work is made from reclaimed materials the majority of which come from the actions of discarded upright pianos.
