ARTIST ROOMS: Roy Lichtenstein
22 October 2016 – 26 February 2017
Explore this newly assembled collection of works by iconic Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein. Wolverhampton Art Gallery has one of the best Pop Art collections outside London and is now the first regional venue to host the new ARTIST ROOMS collection on long loan from The Roy Lichtenstein Foundation. ARTIST ROOMS is a collection of international modern and contemporary art jointly owned by National Galleries of Scotland and Tate on behalf of the public. It was established through The d’Offay Donation in 2008, with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund and the Scottish and British Governments. Since ARTIST ROOMS was established in 2008, ARTIST ROOMS On Tour has shared the collection with some 40 million visitors to 147 exhibitions at 77 UK museums and galleries. Through exhibitions and
creative projects, the collection gives young people the chance to enjoy important works by major artists. Among the incredible images on show is Roy Lichtenstein’s Purist Painting with Bottles (1975), which is part of the gallery’s Pop Art collection and was acquired in 1979 from Waddington galleries, London. It was bought with assistance from the Victoria & Albert Museum Purchase Grant Fund. Now it will sit alongside the ARTIST ROOMS collection of large-scale screenprints from the 1990s and other important works including Reflections: Art (1988), as well as Wall Explosion II (1965) and In the Car (1963), on loan from Tate and National Galleries of Scotland respectively.
Don’t miss one of our biggest exhibitions of the year, by one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.

The display includes the latest items that have been acquired through our Heritage Lottery Fund Collecting Cultures Project alongside a selection of works by Black and Asian artists from the gallery’s existing collection. LARISSA SANSOUR, IN THE FUTURE THEY ATE FROM THE FINEST PORCELAIN, 2016 ART GALLERY
THE RICHES BENEATH US: THE BLACK COUNTRY´S AMAZING ROCKS BILSTON GALLERY
UNTIL 8 JANUARY 2017
UNTIL 2017
The story at the core of this film by Larissa Sansour titled In the Future They Ate From the Finest Porcelain explores the role of myth for history, fact and national identity and sits between sci-fi, archaeology and politics.
This fascinating, permanent display highlights local fossils and rocks left to the city in 1911 by Scottish geologist Doctor John Fraser.
The film focuses on a resistance group that makes underground deposits of elaborate porcelain – suggested to belong to an entirely fictional civilisation.
66
You can find out how former collieries and limestone quarries contributed to the assembly of an astounding group of fossils. See a beautiful, fossilised leaf which fell from a prehistoric tree more than 300 million years ago and a 165-million-year-old tooth from one of the Jurassic world’s most vicious predators the Plesiosaur. The Black Country is currently seeking international recognition by becoming part of the global Geopark Network for world-class special landscapes where these amazing rocks and fossils have been found. THE MAN ON THE HORSE - A TALK BY SENIOR ARCHIVIST HEIDI MCINTOSH ARCHIVES 21 DECEMBER 5.30 - 6.30 PM
150 years ago, with a cholera outbreak on the horizon, the Birmingham Daily Post sent a reporter to investigate unhealthy and overcrowded housing in the Black Country. His reports were shocking then, and today they demonstrate the squalor and poverty in which many of the working classes lived. Simon’s talk will look at some of the poorest homes of the Black Country, particularly Wolverhampton’s Caribee Island - the archetypal Black Country ‘fever nest’. £2 entry. ADMISSION BY PRE-BOOKING ONLY
The “Man on the Horse” is an iconic focal point in Queen’s Square. Senior Archivist Heidi McIntosh will look at events leading up the visit of Queen Victoria to Wolverhampton on 30 November 1866 to unveil the statue of Prince Albert, and the impact it had on the local people.
