WOLVERHAMPTON CITY ARCHIVES

WELCOME! We’ve got a great year ahead with lots of exciting new exhibitions and events to share with you here at Wolverhampton Art Gallery as well as our other sites at Bantock House, Bilston Gallery and Wolverhampton City Archives. Children will love the Seven Wonders of the World, all brilliantly recreated in LEGO when Warren Elsmore’s Brick Wonders opens here from Friday 7 April. You will be blown away by his creations; see the Great Wall of China, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and Petra all built from one of the world’s most loved and iconic toys - LEGO. And for fans of the book and box-office hit War Horse you’ll be fascinated to see Michael Dixon’s amazing mechanical birds used in the show’s production. The display is in the Lichfield Street entrance and runs until 27 February. We are also looking forward to having the incredible Natural History Museum Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition in the summer. Visitors loved it when we hosted the 2015 tour showcasing breathtaking images from the natural world. Watch this space to find out more about this year’s blockbuster show opening on 22 July. But before we race ahead there’s a lot to enjoy here over the coming months with exhibitions championing new art in the West Midlands, amazing moving mechanical sculpture and some of our best 20th Century abstract paintings. And it isn’t just exhibitions. We are delighted to be hosting the city’s first literary festival in January. Turn to pages four and five to find out about the Express & Star Wolverhampton Original Literature Festival (WOLF) where you can listen to authors, poets and speakers in venues across the city.

The Express & Star Wolverhampton Original Literature Festival (Wolf) runs from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 January with both free and ticketed events. Acclaimed authors, musicians, workshops, art and children’s authors are taking part in this inaugural festival, which is also being held at The Slade Rooms, Bantock House, Central Library, The Arena Theatre, The University of Wolverhampton, Newhampton Arts Centre, Wolverhampton Art Gallery and Light House Media Centre. Meet award-winning author and journalist Sathnam Sanghera, a former Wolverhampton Grammar School student, who is in conversation here at the gallery at 3-4pm on January 27. Sathnam’s first book, The Boy With The Topknot: A Memoir of Love, Secrets and Lies in Wolverhampton, was shortlisted for the 2008 Costa Biography Award, the 2009 PEN/Ackerley Prize and named 2009 Mind Book of the Year. It is currently being adapted for TV by Kudos and Parti Productions to air on the BBC in the autumn of 2017.

The Slade Rooms is hosting charttopping Ned’s Atomic Dustbin singer Jonn Penney talking about the common thread between music, books and independence with best-selling author Martin Roach. They are followed by Miles Hunt, from The Wonder Stuff, reading exclusive extracts ahead of the release of his follow-up diaries. Both events are on Friday 27 November from 7pm at the Broad Street venue.

Budding young authors and poets can take part in weekend workshops and discover the joys of Japanese Haiku poetry, hone their skills at character writing or combine crafts and the written word in a fun ‘Paperverse’ session.

And there’s even more. The festival is a mix of free and ticketed events. For the latest programme and booking details go to www.wolvesliteraturefestival.co.uk

Enjoy an afternoon of tea, cakes and deliciously silly poetry with Win Saha and Bert Flitcroft, at Wolverhampton Art Gallery on Saturday 28 January, in an Offa’s Press production. Published poet and former Birmingham Poet Laureate Roy McFarlane is at Wolverhampton Art Gallery on Sunday 29 January for a free hour-long solo performance.

LAST CHANCE TO SEE... WOLVERHAMPTONART.ORG.UK

LARISSA SANSOUR IN THE FUTURE THEY ATE FROM THE FINEST PORCELAIN ART GALLERY UNTIL 8 JANUARY

Immerse yourself in an out-of-time sci-fi inspired film now showing… We are asking visitors to step inside a surreal post apocalyptic world shown in Larissa Sansour’s film In The Future They Ate From The Finest Porcelain. The eerie and atmospheric film was created in 2014 and references comic strips, TV shows and Hollywood feature films to consider time and control over time. The film suggests that time, like land, is a scarce resource and can be used as an instrument of power. Sansour is influenced by a line from George Orwell’s totalitarian sci-fi novel 1984: ‘who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past.’ The cinematic artwork runs for 30 minutes and is co-commissioned by FLAMIN Productions through Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network and produced by Spike Film and Video, Bristol. Born in Jerusalem, Sansour studied Fine Art in Copenhagen, London and New York. The exhibition is free. In the Future They Ate from the Finest Porcelain 2, C-print, 100 x 200cm, Larissa Sansour, 2014

VICTORIAN PLAYTIME ART GALLERY UNTIL 5 FEBRUARY Have fun discovering what Victorian children did before the invention of television, computers and video games. Was it boring to live in Victorian Britain? This fascinating exhibition brings to life Victorian playtime, with puzzles, dolls, teddies and moving wooden toys. Find out what games children played and which toys were most popular. You can even dress up in a Victorian costume and try out some of the toys yourself; have a go at a game of Quoits, play with a Thaumatrope (an optical moving toy), test your skills with a wooden cup and ball or try writing and drawing on a slate with chalk.

ROSEMARY TERRY THE PROJECTED KITCHEN ART GALLERY UNTIL 12 FEBRUARY You won’t see household items quite the same again after visiting Rosemary Terry’s latest work, which sees the Wolverhamptonbased sculptor and installation artist return to her preoccupation with domestic scenes. Household items are flattened, enlarged or overlapped, making familiar objects strange. By carving tables, pots, and spoons out of wood – traditionally considered a ‘poor’ material in sculpture – Terry challenges perceptions of both the subjects and materials she uses. Rosemary has been a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Wolverhampton since 1998. She is based at Eagle Works.

BLACK AND GOLD: IMAGINARY WORLDS OF JAPANNED WARE BILSTON GALLERY 14 JANUARY – UNTIL 26 MARCH Welcome to an imaginary winter world, in black and gold, featured in the gallery’s collection of japanned ware. The natural world and its curious creatures feature as golden landscapes and patterns set on lacquered black backgrounds. Three hundred years ago, Bilston led the way for japanned ware manufacture and this exhibition celebrates this pioneering spirit.

ART AND WRITING: LITERARY THEMES IN THE COLLECTION ART GALLERY CHINESE OPERA PUPPETS BANTOCK HOUSE 1 JANUARY 31 MARCH Puppet theatre in China has a long history and is recognised as a major component of the Asian theatre genre. String Puppets, known as ‘Tixian Muou’ in Chinese, can be traced back to many regions with distinct differences between the north and south. This exhibition looks at the opera string puppets from the southern region, including Hong Kong, which can be traced back as far as 1190.

14 JANUARY - 5 FEBRUARY Art works inspired by poetry, novels and plays go on show in this exhibition which leads up to the city’s first ever literature festival taking place in the gallery and other Wolverhampton venues from January 27-29. The exhibition explores the relationship between art and writing. It has been curated by postgraduate student Ainsley Vinall (MA Art History and Curating, University of Birmingham). Key art pieces featured in the exhibition include Paula Rego’s Embarkation, inspired by Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea, Frank Brangwyn’s Fisherman and Octopus, influenced by the novels of Jules Verne and Herman Melville, and Henry Darvall’s The Lady of Shalott. These art works and others will be shown alongside fascinating objects which aided authors, such as an eighteenth century library chair, a pair of Qing dynasty ivory wrist rests, and a gilt and pearl decorated ink stand. BOWLS, BUCKETS, AND BEDSTEADS BILSTON INDUSTRIES BETWEEN THE WARS BILSTON GALLERY 14 JANUARY –26 MARCH Black Country Memories Club draws on its extensive collection of Bilston heritage to tell the story of local manufacturing in the 1920s and ‘30s. The period between the wars is often remembered for economic depression, but Bilston industries, large and small, kept producing the goods. Come and see what they made and how Bilston’s industrial heritage kept going throughout hard times. Featuring products from firms such as Beldray, Sankey and Phoenix Glass.

28 JANUARY - 1 APRIL In the run-up to the 90th anniversary of the first car to reach 200mph - a Sunbeam, this exhibition champions the historic links between Wolverhampton’s industries. The local motor industry was built on experience in bicycle-making, which in turn had links to a history in tin-plate and japanned ware. The career of John Marston and his company, Sunbeam, typified that story. This exhibition plots Marston’s company’s journey to the land speed record.
