Wolverhampton’s own Ron Dutton, an acclaimed international artist and medallist, is showing his diverse creations in Nature in the Round.

Nature in the Round explores the creative evolution of his work, from Dutton’s earliest medals to his recent abstract and experimental pieces.

Look out for a 12-metre-long ceramic frieze in the gallery this summer when Charlotte Hodes installs her latest creation.

Widely acknowledged as one of the pioneers of the art medal form, Dutton is one of the most prominent medal artists working today. Over the years he has had his medals presented to the Queen, won the competition for the Royal Mint 1998 Rugby World Cup £2 coin and was commissioned by the BBC to create The Archers 50th anniversary coin.

The exhibition highlights the different subjects that influence Dutton’s work: from nature, to birds, flight, space travel and the architecture of Wolverhampton. Together, these works redefine the medal as a unique combination of sculpture, visual art and poetry.

The artist and Professor in Fine Art at London College of Fashion, is working with the gallery on this ambitious large-scale installation.

It will be shown alongside Hodes’ existing works which include a collection of intricate papercuts as well as a table–top installation of more than 350 plates. Image: (detail) Wave: Rosette Red from the series Waves 2010. photo © Matthew Hollow
