The Singh Twins: Slaves of Fashion Wolverhampton Art Gallery 21 July – 19 August At first glance the work of The Singh Twins is colourful and light, packed with minute detail that draws heavily on the tradition of Indian miniature painting. Look closer and you’ll see works rich in symbolism that challenge and redefine widely-accepted, Eurocentric perceptions of heritage and identity in art and society. The Twins first visited India in 1980 and became fascinated with Indian miniatures. The prejudice they experienced when trying to develop this tradition as their personal artistic language, has been a major driving force behind their art. Describing their style as ‘Past - Modern’ (as opposed to ‘Post-Modern’) the sisters use historical Eastern and Western artistic conventions to address contemporary social, cultural and political issues. The Singh Twins seek to make a real difference through their art. Their newest work, Slaves of Fashion, combines traditional hand-painted techniques with digitally created imagery. Intricate and painstakingly produced, the works show incredible draughtsmanship.
Internationally-renowned artists The Singh Twins are exhibiting at Wolverhampton Art Gallery this summer. Eleven of these, featuring life-sized portraits of historical figures, are digital fabric artworks displayed on lightboxes. Focusing on the global story of trade in Indian textiles, they explore themes of Empire, conflict, enslavement and the pursuit of a luxurious lifestyle, whatever the cost - revealing hidden details of Europe’s colonial past, which challenge some of our accepted views of history. 2
Exhibitions
The relevance of these themes to current debates around ethical consumerism and the legacies of Empire is represented by nine smaller (largely hand-painted) artworks. These include portraits of high-profile politicians: Theresa May, Donald Trump and Angela Merkel, which draw on the tradition of satirical cartoons. An audio-visual poem by The Singh Twins offers a further artistic response to the interconnected Slaves of Fashion narratives. Academic insights are provided by the University of Liverpool’s Professor Kate Marsh, specialist in European colonial histories. Also on display is material relating to the artists’ creative process, including selected objects from National Museums Liverpool and Wolverhampton Art Gallery (including jewellery, historic costume, ceramics and books) that have informed the Slaves of Fashion series.

Working with finely illustrated printed metal, Melanie Tomlinson creates intricate three-dimensional sculptures, some with moving parts. Ghost Horses and Guns feature’s nine new pieces specially created for this exhibition, which can be seen as an archive of illuminated manuscripts relating to urban folk tales. Melanie’s ideas are rooted in her fascination with the forgotten spaces between urban and rural landscape – overgrown, magical, full of life; a metaphor for transformation. Each of the nine works has a story attached, which merges memories of Melanie’s working-class childhood with real-life events, reflecting universal themes such as nature, destruction, transformation and hope.
