DAVID WARD: IN A LANDSCAPE ART GALLERY

BEN KELLY BANTOCK HOUSE UNTIL 9 JULY

UNTIL 9 JULY This tranquil and immersive exhibition of photographs, film and sculpture created by artist David Ward is the result of three year’s collaboration between the artist and the Gallery. The work produced draws on elements of the Black Country landscape, which the artist is familiar with from his childhood, growing up in Wolverhampton. It includes new commissions inspired by the gallery’s collections of local and industrial history in partnership with the glass department, University of Wolverhampton School of Art. Made by Hand I, (2015). Image © David Ward. Unique archival print on cotton rag paper.

BLACK ART IN FOCUS ART GALLERY UNTIL 23 JULY Celebration of work by black British contemporary artists bringing together paintings and prints from Wolverhampton Art Gallery’s existing collection and artwork newly acquired through the Heritage Lottery Fund Collecting Cultures programme. Highlights include iconic works by Turner Prize winner Chris Ofili, Tam Joseph, Keith Piper, Donald Rodney and the other leading figures in the Blk Art Group which emerged from Wolverhampton in the early 1980s and went on to influence black and Asian artists across the UK.

Eugene Palmer’s enigmatic painting Duppy Shadow (1994) will also be on show in our Georgian Gallery for the duration of this exhibition. Tam Joseph, Spirit of the Carnival, c1982. Ben Kelly’s expressive paintings depict atmospheric scenes abundant in colour and vitality. He captures the seasonal shifts in nature which chime with the moods of life. Ben’s work conveys the interrelationships of people in their environment, in a host of activities, from walking through a park to skiing, foraging, or fishing. Each painting has a sense of timelessness, balancing activity and poise, bustle and solitude. His greatest gift is the ability to filter the essence and simplicity of human nature and present it in a contemporary style. Ben Kelly, Foragers, oil on board. Image copyright the artist.

The unusual circumstances of the Black Country – to some, a mysterious and enigmatic place – have produced an unusual dialect. Or should we view it as a set of dialects? Research has shown that the industrial heritage of the area has meant that tight-knit and socially similar areas within the Black Country show distinctive ways of speaking, Using examples from a variety of native speakers, this presentation discusses the historical and social factors which have led to the Black Country dialect, as well as looking at current variation and differences within the region.

WOLVERHAMPTON CITY OF SANCTUARY LIGHT HOUSE

THE AVERAGE HUMAN LIGHT HOUSE

6TH JUNE – 30TH JUNE.

14TH JULY TO END OF AUGUST

Wolverhampton City of Sanctuary presents ‘Different pasts and shared futures’, a celebration of the refugee and migrant community of Wolverhampton, honouring the different faiths and diverse cultures within the city. The multimedia exhibition features established Wolverhampton artists working in collaboration with newly arrived artists from Eritrea, Iran, Iraq and Syria. Artwork from local schools and community groups look at the reality of those fleeing war and persecution and demonstrates how we can make ‘simple acts’ to welcome those new to our schools and city.

The Average Human is a journey into the health and habits of the average human being in the UK. Visitors will find out just how much the average person eats, drinks, sleeps and excretes! Funded by the prestigious Wellcome Trust, this is a science installation where visitors go on a journey through an interactive bedroom, a mind gym and follow their food from mouth to toilet. Along the way they’ll find out about cutting edge scientific research on sleep, nutrition and exercise. Accompanying image supplied: Photo: Nerina Villa, exhibition producer for The Average Human.

CRAFT CAFÉ BILSTON GALLERY

THE LADY’S BEDROOM & NURSERY BANTOCK HOUSE

Craft Café is an exciting part of a visit to Bilston Craft Gallery. Enjoy a hot drink with a slice of cake or teacake and choose from a menu of creative activities that are fun for all

ages. There are a range of craft pack projects that you can do on the spot or take away. You can even try your hand at ceramic painting and we’ll fire your unique piece.

Take a look at a fancy Victorian bedroom Black Country-style. The room is full of Japanned ware which was hugely popular in its day and mostly produced in Bilston and Wolverhampton during the Industrial Revolution.

Escape 21st century hassle and step back into a sumptuous Georgian world in our interactive gallery. Surrounded by stunning oil paintings dress up like a Georgian and take a selfie or hunt around in the speciallymade furniture for activities to learn more about the Age of Enlightenment.

THE DRAWING ROOM BANTOCK HOUSE THE VICTORIAN GALLERY ART GALLERY Be like the most famous Victorian detective Sherlock Holmes and discover the art and artefacts we’ve got in two rooms covering this hugely influential period. 22

THE DAY NURSERY BANTOCK HOUSE

SENSING SCULPTURE ART GALLERY

This is such a lovely room to sit in and play or read with your children. Let them learn what it was like to be an Edwardian child, dress up and play with a selection of old-fashioned toys. On a rainy day it’s a great place to hang out.

You can get hands on in this gallery with our exhibits. It really is family-friendly and shares its space with our extended café so you can enjoy a coffee among the artworks on show, which we encourage all our visitors to touch and explore.

We don’t mind if you sit on our furniture and make yourself at home here at Bantock House. Experience this Edwardian drawing room and picture what it was like when the Bantock family lived here 100 years ago.
