Welcome

January – March 2018

Year of changes and redevelopment 2018 will be a year of changes at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Towards the end of 2017 we made some significant improvements to our Georgian Room. If you’ve visited since then you will have noticed plush new carpet, a fresh new colour scheme and fantastic new lighting that really shows off our impressive Georgian portraits.

During 2018 we will be moving our café to the ground floor, which will make it easier to get to. We’ll be adding more seats and uncovering the windows so you can enjoy the views over St. Peter’s Gardens. Upstairs, our touring galleries will be refreshed and improved to create a bigger exhibition space. This will enable us to host bigger and more inspiring touring exhibitions like the Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

2

Whilst these changes are very exciting, they will mean that there will be disruption to spaces across the gallery. We ask that you bear with us during the refurbishment. For the most up-to-date information please visit wolverhamptonart.org.uk/refurbishment

2018 marks 40 years since the creation of the city’s archive service. The service began as part of the City’s Central Library, who had collected and preserved some Local Authority and privately owned records, but little had been done to catalogue them or make them available to the public. In July 1978, Wolverhampton Borough Archives was established under the care of a professional archivist. Records were stored in small strongrooms in the library’s basement. A search room was made available from 1982 enabling the public to access the records. In 1996, the archives service merged with the Local Studies Library, and the new combined service moved to a building on Snow Hill above the nowdemolished Netto supermarket. The service remained here for a little over a decade as the proposed Summer Row development meant that the service was put on notice as the lease was expiring. At the same time, the Council was refurbishing the former Molineux

Hotel Building, which had been empty and derelict for nearly 30 years. A state-of-the-art extension was built on the side incorporating the strongroom racking with appropriate environmental controls and fire suppression. This new building opened to the public in March 2009.

January – March 2018

Forty Years of Archives

Here, the service has gone from strength to strength, with a thriving Friends group, a successful programme of regular events, including our Local History Fair, and external validation through Accreditation from the National Archives. Read more about our January to March activities on page 22 & 23.

Wolverhampton Literature Festival Art Gallery 26 – 28 January Mixture of Free and ticketed events

This year’s event builds on the success of our inaugural festival which saw 2,700 people attend more than 70 different events at venues across the city. Also at the festival is John Challis, perhaps best known as Boycie in Only Fools and Horses. The actor and author will be talking about his career, autobiography and the inspiration for his TV series The Green Green Grass. Returning to the festival is Jonn Penney, frontman of Ned’s Atomic Dustbin. He will be joined by the band’s guitarist Rat and will be answering questions from

School’s Programme

Wolverhampton Art Gallery is pleased to host exhibitions of work produced by talented local students. It is a great opportunity for people to see their work displayed in a new setting away from their school. The first exhibition after Christmas will feature work by students from Moseley Park School. February’s display will be by Colton Hills’ students before King’s School take on the space in March. Traditionally these displays have been alongside our Sensing Sculpture Gallery overlooking the café. The upcoming refurbishment works mean these displays will now be on the ground floor in our Community Hire Space Gallery. If you are interesting in having your school’s work included in the programme please e-mail tess.radcliffe@wolverhampton.gov.uk
