THE POETIC IMPOSSIBILITY TO MANAGE THE INFINITE ART GALLERY 7 FEBRUARY – 2 MAY 2015 In 2012, Edgar Martins was granted unparalleled access to the European Space Agency and its partners. Over the past two years he has travelled to 20 locations across Europe and South America to shoot in classified facilities such as test centres, robotics departments, launch sites, astronaut training centres and satellite assembly rooms. Martins’ ground-breaking series documents a variety of ESA’s programmes such as microgravity, human spaceflight and lunar, Mars and Mercury explorations, whilst reflecting on the new politics of space exploration and the impact of its technological application on our consciousness. Supported by funding from Arts Council England, The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Fundação EDP, Instituto Cultural de Macau, Tapestry and Kay Mounting. POP IN SPACE: WE CHOOSE TO GO TO THE MOON ART GALLERY 21 FEBRUARY – 18 JULY 2015 Pop in Space explores artists’ responses to the Space Race during the Cold War. Artists such as Eduardo Paolozzi, Gerald Laing, David Lamelas and Kiki Kogelnik, among others, employed space imagery to reflect the glamour and power of infinite exploration and introduced a striking space age imagery during the 1950s and 60s. Half a century later, this exhibition explores tensions from the technological and ideological rivalry between the US and the Soviet Union, both focused on attaining a first in space exploration. BILSTON’S HAPPY HOUSING: OTTO NEURATH’S VISION FOR POST-WAR MODERN LIVING BILSTON GALLERY 7 MARCH – 2 MAY 2015 In the mid-1940s eminent Viennese sociologist and urban planner Otto Neurath set out an ambitious plan for creating happiness in Bilston. His vision was to create modern homes based on state-of-the-art social housing of 1920s Red Vienna. The end result was Stowlawn Estate. This exhibition presents Neurath’s ideas, examples of his famous Isotypes (forerunners of today’s infographics), and memories of people who have lived on Stowlawn Estate over the past 60 years. There will also be furniture, textiles, ceramics and domestic items reflecting the ‘new look’ style of the mid-century era. Stowlawn Estate in the 1950s © Wolverhampton Archives

THE LIBERATED QUILT: NEW WORK FROM THROUGH OUR HANDS BILSTON GALLERY 16 MAY – 11 JULY 2015 The Liberated Quilt provides a showcase for 23 international artists working mainly with stitched textile techniques, including quilt-making and embroidery. Their work challenges and expands the boundaries of textiles, showing how innovative ideas can evolve from a traditional art form. Strong narratives, bold visions, and raw emotional response are key features of the work on show. Curated by Through Our Hands, this exhibition offers the opportunity to experience work by textile artists considered to be amongst the best in the world. The Race by Bethan Ash (detail) © The artist

THE CURRENT SITUATION ART GALLERY 1 APRIL – 27 JUNE 2015 The desire to create art which is accessible and playful, sits at the heart of Yara ElSherbini’s practice. For the past 10 years, her artworks have used the recognisable formats of jokes, games and game shows, as well as everyday objects such as toilet locks and books to allow people to relate and engage with contemporary art and provoke important socio-political questions. The Current Situation brings together a selection of five artworks that are diverse in their presentation but connected by a common theme: an exploration of the here and now. Yara El-Sherbini is represented by La Caja Blanca Gallery, Spain, and is an Artsadmin Associate Artist. GEORGIAN ENAMELS – A NEW NARRATIVE BANTOCK HOUSE 14 MAY – 9 AUGUST 2015 In the 1800s locally-made enamel boxes were very desirable and popular among polite Georgian society. They were used to hold snuff which was taken by both men and women; for patches used as decoration and to cover pock marks; for perfume to hide unpleasant smells and to carry sweet tasting bonbons to freshen the breath. The exhibition will include new and imagined stories and new enamels created by local craftsman John Grayson, which are inspired by popular culture both from the eighteenth century and present day. SCHOOL DAYS CITY ARCHIVES 7 APRIL – 30 JUNE 2015 A display of school log books, photographs and other material bringing back memories of local schools in days gone by.

NATURAL BY GRACE MAYNE BILSTON GALLERY 14 FEBRUARY – 14 MARCH Using materials such as acrylics, oils, gouache, pencil, oil pastels and charcoal, Grace loves experimenting with natural, manmade and discarded materials to see how they add unique effects. Grace’s passion for poetry and ceramics will also be seen in 2D and 3D forms; there will be something in the exhibition that everyone can enjoy.
INTERLACE BY RUTH SINGER AND BETHANY WALKER BILSTON GALLERY 21 MARCH – 18 APRIL Interlace is a new collaboration between textile artists Ruth Singer and Bethany Walker using a combination of delicate, manipulated textiles set into concrete. Their work is created using carefully selected textiles, which are cut, stitched and manipulated to create petallike structures, echoing fallen blossom. These textiles are set into concrete, rendering the textiles permanent.

ASCENTIS PROGRAMME LIFE SKILLS E1 BILSTON GALLERY
14 MARCH – 11 APRIL
25 APRIL – 23 MAY
In this exhibition of large abstract paintings, the artist David Walton RBSA has based his ideas on the symbolic marks on ancient stones (the Lithic Series) and signs and early forms of writing (the Script Series). In contrast the artist is also showing a collection of small portraits drawn from life.
This is an exhibition of the work completed by Entry One students at the City of Wolverhampton College. Their work helps them develop practical skills and the money raised by them in the sale of jewellery goes to support the Newlife Charity for disabled children and their families.
