A BIG BANG: THE ORIGINS OF THE POP ART COLLECTION PART 1 ART GALLERY
JUSTYNA PTAK THE HOUSE ART GALLERY
UNTIL 21 JUNE 2014
UNTIL 12 JULY 2014
The first of a two-part display exploring the reason why art works by some of the biggest names in Pop Art found a home at Wolverhampton Art Gallery.
In this new series of photographs entitled The House, Justyna Ptak depicts spaces and overlooked details of a house interior. The images show a certain place or object at a certain time.
This exhibition features some of the earliest works acquired for the Art Gallery’s collection over the last 50 years and tells the story behind the collection, which began in the mid-sixties with the purchase of the ICA print portfolio printed at Kelpra Studios in 1964. This included work by Derek Boshier, Peter Phillips, Bridget Riley, Peter Blake, Patrick Caulfield and other contemporary artists of the time. In the last 50 years, this collection has become one of the strongest regional collections in the UK, with the addition of other stars of the Pop era including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Hamilton and Pauline Boty. Tim Mara, Five Screen Prints, 1973, Collection of WAVE Wolverhampton Art Gallery 4
Using a narrow palette of neutral colours across the whole range of photographs along with a remarkable use of light, she highlights the textures and tactile qualities of objects and surfaces. There is no human presence but Ptak’s images carefully record its traces. Justyna was the 2012 recipient of the West Midlands Open best in show prize, and a recent postgraduate of the University of Wolverhampton. Justyna Ptak, The House #2, 2014, courtesy the artist
A VIKING’S GUIDE TO DEADLY DRAGONS WITH CRESSIDA COWELL ART GALLERY 14 JUNE - 30 AUGUST 2014 Cressida Cowell’s delightful books about a reluctant Viking hero are brought to life by the same team who created our 2012 exhibition, The Tiger Who Came to Tea. A Viking’s Guide To Deadly Dragons explores how Viking history, legend and dragonlore inspired Cowell’s How to Train Your Dragon series. With Cressida’s hero Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third as your guide, the exhibition transports you to a time and place when dragons lived amongst us, where we could speak to them in Dragonese and where going to school meant learning how to be a Viking pirate. The exhibition reveals the author’s creative process through the inclusion of her original sketches, story plans, notes and manuscripts. Exhibition supported by Arts Council England, Newcastle City Council and Hodder Children’s Books. Illustration © Cressida Cowell
ALL THAT GLISTERS: 18th CENTURY STEEL JEWELLERY BANTOCK HOUSE UNTIL 10 AUGUST 2014 In the 1700s, Wolverhampton was highly regarded as a centre for the production of cut steel jewellery. Fashionable brooches, buckles and buttons were carefully crafted by riveting steel ‘gems’ to a base of thin sheet metal and then individually shaped and polished. Although they were often worn as
a substitute to precious jewels they were still quite expensive as buckles for a pair of shoes could take up to two weeks to handcraft. Wolverhampton master-craftsman John Worralow made pieces of such gossamer airiness that they were admired by followers of fashion all over Europe, and in 1782 he was appointed steel jeweller to George III.

NATION ESTATE ART GALLERY
CHIC POINT ART GALLERY
24 MAY - 26 JULY
30 JULY - 20 SEPTEMBER
Two Palestinian artists present an ironic take on the political situation in Israel and Palestine. In her short sci-fi film Nation Estate, Larissa Sansour offers a vertical solution to Palestinian statehood. Housed in one colossal skyscraper, the whole Palestinian population is finally living the high life. Sharif Waked’s Chic Point: Fashion for Israeli Checkpoints is presented as a glamorous fashion show but the clothes with their woven-in holes, gaps and splits are uniquely designed. They are made to meet the daily demands of the checkpoint soldiers, who require Palestinians to demonstrate that they are not carrying explosives or weapons.
6
Both films have been acquired recently as part of a joint collecting initiative with IWM (Imperial War Museum) to collect art that reflects on the conflict in Israel and Palestine. The collection has been funded by the Art Fund Renew scheme with funding for Nation Estate made available through the Contemporary Art Society Acquisitions Scheme.
A GLASS ACT BILSTON GALLERY 28 JUNE - 30 AUGUST 2014 A Glass Act celebrates the diversity and relevance of contemporary glass tableware and features numerous functional objects for domestic use from the everyday glass tumbler through to intricate candelabras and everything in between. The exhibition brings together work which explores how we use, understand and value glassware and considers why so many craftspeople focus on items for the table. Through glass that is blown, cast, kiln formed, fused and engraved each object displayed offers an individual response that explores the potential of this medium. PHOENIX: THE STORY OF THE BRITISH HEAT RESISTING GLASS COMPANY BILSTON GALLERY 28 JUNE - 30 AUGUST 2014 This exhibition celebrates the Bilston-based company Phoenix, which was set up in the 1930s to exploit a patent for oven proof glass. It was a glass similar to the well-known brand Pyrex but made under a different patent. Phoenix is probably best known for the wide range of domestic wares it produced such as casserole dishes, gravy boats, dinner plates, cups and saucers. Although the company no longer exists, examples of its domestic items are easy to find, often in people’s kitchens where they are still in use. This exhibition brings together a large range of these pieces, including examples of clear and opal glass, as well as coloured finishes and a range of decorative patterns. These are presented alongside memories of past employees. Selection of Phoenix Glass Š Bilston Craft Gallery

26 JULY - 29 NOVEMBER 2014 This exhibition of paintings by Cradleyborn artist Brian Yale forms part of our commemoration of the outbreak of the First World War. After attending Stourbridge School of Art, Yale studied at the Royal College of Art, at the same time as David Hockney and Allen Jones. He was later a designer with the Greater London Council but during that time he also pursued his love of painting. The paintings, dating from the 1980s, are based on sketches made on the spot of some of the most famous and tragic battlefields of the First World War. Brian Yale, Hawthorne Ridge © The Artist

LETTERS HOME BANTOCK HOUSE & CITY ARCHIVES 14 AUGUST - 2 NOVEMBER 2014 Letters Home explores different elements of letters written during the First World War. At Bantock House, letters are displayed alongside objects selected from Wolverhampton’s collection and relevant items loaned from local collectors. The exhibition at the City Archives features a rare white feather letter, sent to architect William Weller after he was excused from military service. This aspect of the exhibition looks at conscientious objectors and the reactions of local people to the tribunals. Thoughts and memories of everyday life back home were recorded in letters sent to mothers, wives and sweethearts by young soldiers far away. These poignant words are contextualised and brought to life, presented next to objects that are symbolic of their thoughts and hopes.
CRAFT AND CONFLICT BILSTON GALLERY 13 SEPTEMBER - 22 NOVEMBER 2014 Craft and Conflict brings together both contemporary and historical items that commemorate and explore the themes of war and remembrance. Included in the exhibition are examples of how local companies and their workforces assisted with the war effort during the First World War, by fabricating items such as grenades, helmets and even service vehicles. Also on display are examples of work by contemporary craft makers who explore themes of conflict and peace, addressing the human aspect of war and the importance of remembering past conflicts. THE MAKING OF MORDOR ART GALLERY 20 SEPTEMBER 2014 - 17 JANUARY 2015 ‘Mordor’ conjures images of a blackened land consumed by industry. This exhibition explores the links between J.R.R. Alongside reproductions from Tolkien’s sketchbooks, The Making of Mordor will feature works by other 20th century artists and writers who have been influenced by the industrial powerhouse of the West Midlands. Contemporary responses 10
to the post-industrial Black Country will also be on show, including works by Turner Prize nominee Richard Billingham, photographer Brian Griffin and internationally acclaimed installation artist Olafur Eliasson.
