BROADCAST NEWS A key work from Wolverhampton Art Gallery’s Pop collection took centre stage on BBC1’s The One Show in a feature marking the 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination. Andy Warhol’s Jacqueline (1964) is a screenprint on canvas that uses an image of Jackie Kennedy taken at her husband’s funeral, during which she came to symbolise the national sense of loss and bereavement. Watch out for more TV broadcasts in early 2014 on BBC2’s Culture Show featuring the work of Pauline Boty and the recent exhibition at the Art Gallery, and on BBC2’s Great Train Journeys, which includes a visit to Bantock House Museum by Michael Portillo. WOLVERHAMPTON PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY PRESENTS: FROM DARKROOM TO DIGITAL ART GALLERY UNTIL 15 FEBRUARY 2014 2013 marks the 125th anniversary of the Wolverhampton Photographic Society. To celebrate the occasion, this exhibition traces the rich and influential history of photography in Wolverhampton from the mid-19th century to the present day. The exhibition features six key local figures of influence in the medium’s development, including the ‘father of art photography’ Oscar J Rejlander, and others such as Haseler, Whitlock, Bennett-Clark, Eisenhofer and Susser, an early member of the Society. This historical component is complemented by a display of contemporary photographs demonstrating the expertise of Society members in capturing the constantly changing face of the city. This exhibition has been generously supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

DEAN KELLAND: NO HIDING PLACE ART GALLERY UNTIL 15 FEBRUARY 2014 Using a combination of performance, film-making, collage and print Dean Kelland re-visits popular masculine figures from British sitcoms of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s in order to explore our collective cultural identities and stereotypical representations of masculinity. His new film, entitled No Hiding Place (2013), has been commissioned by Wolverhampton Art Gallery and is influenced by Oscar Rejlander’s picture Rejlander the Photographer introducing Rejlander the Volunteer. Like Rejlander, Kelland embodies the dual roles of artist and performer to explore shared interests in identity and social divisions.

NIKHIL CHOPRA ART GALLERY SHAKTI

SPACE ODDITY

UNTIL 29 MARCH 2014

UNTIL 5 APRIL 2014

Nikhil Chopra works across a range of media including performance, painting and photography to reflect upon personal histories and India’s colonial past. The Inside Out series of photographs document a 99-hour durational performance by the artist in the historic Tuscan town of San Gimignano.

In November 2013, Nikhil Chopra undertook an 18-hour durational performance in the Focus Gallery, the residue of which lingers long after the artist has left. Portraits in charcoal of local people including the South Asian community in particular juxtaposed with examples of the Gallery’s Victorian painting collection, bring together Chopra’s primary interests in ideas of belonging, remoteness and the exotic. The title, Space Oddity, is the title of a 1969 song by David Bowie and references a tumultuous time of rock n roll, women’s rights and mass migration. The title also alludes to the strangeness of a place.

The exhibition is a collaboration with Meadow Arts. It is an important part of their Shakti programme of contemporary art, where artists of Indian heritage have been invited to respond to and interact with historic South Asian collections at venues across the Midlands and Wales, including Kedleston Hall, Powis Castle and Oriel Davies.

Costumes for the performance were designed by Loise Braganza.

For more information about Meadow Arts and their Shakti programme of contemporary art responses to historic South Asian collections, please visit www.meadowarts.org Nikhil Chopra, Space Oddity, 18 hour performance, 2013. A BETTER PLACE TO SHOP: THE STORY OF BEATTIES CITY ARCHIVES 4 JANUARY – 29 MARCH 2014 Since its founding in 1877, Beatties department store went on to become famous for selling high quality merchandise and for providing excellent customer service. To many people of Wolverhampton and beyond, it really was “a better place to shop”. The display which consists of a selection of catalogued material relating to Beatties from the 1870s to the 21st century, ranges from price lists for ladies’ mantles (capes) in the 1890s to advice for women on how to dress to please a man in the 1960s. It gives a fascinating insight into the social attitudes prevalent over a hundred plus years of trading. The collection is not only an important addition to the archive collection but also highlights an important part of Wolverhampton’s retail history. There will also be the chance to enter a raffle to win a Beattie bear. All proceeds will go to Compton Hospice.

ALL IN A DAY’S WORK BANTOCK HOUSE 23 JANUARY – 5 MAY 2014 The Black Country was home to many large manufacturing companies that have now moved out, closed down or reduced production. Companies such as Goodyear,

Courtaulds, Star Aluminium, Ever Ready, Stewarts and Lloyds, GKN, Rubery Owen, FH Lloyds and John Thompson employed thousands of local men and women and formed an important part of their lives and social culture. The exhibition provides a brief history of the companies in words and images and visitors are encouraged to share their own memories with us.

RAW CRAFT: FINE THINKING IN CONTEMPORARY FURNITURE BILSTON GALLERY 1 FEBRUARY – 29 MARCH 2014 Raw Craft presents imaginative contemporary furniture by seven designers that is characterised by careful use of materials and a problem-solving approach to making. The design of these works addresses current issues such as furniture for multi-functional living spaces, lack of storage space and economic use of resources. There is a clear emphasis on modest and sparing use of materials – Seongyong Lee’s lightweight and strong Plytube furniture is created from ply strips wrapped into tubes inspired by the model of cardboard tubing; Fabien Capello’s Christmas Tree series uses recycled trees from the annual glut to create rustic but quirky side tables and stools.

This international line-up of makers all bring a very hands-on and crafted approach to design and making which stands out in an age of mass-production and computeraided design. By working directly with the object they have created things that are both practical and inspiring. Raw Craft is a Crafts Council Touring Exhibition. Tomas Alonso, A-Side Tables Photo © Nick Moss

JUSTYNA PTAK ART GALLERY 19 APRIL – 12 JULY 2014

Justyna Ptak’s photographs seek to capture the significant and the intangible in the everyday. Justyna’s images are characterised by their formal properties – light, texture and composition – as well as their technical qualities, often large format and transparent. The images are drawn from domestic, architectural and rural environments which are both sharp and hazy simultaneously. The experimental core of the work is amplified by its presentation as transparencies, affecting the viewer’s perception of the imagery and of the space in which it is displayed. Justyna is the 2012 recipient of the West Midlands Open best in show prize, and a recent postgraduate of the University of Wolverhampton.

A BIG BANG: THE ORIGINS OF THE POP ART COLLECTION PART 1 ART GALLERY UNTIL 21 JUNE 2014 The first of a two-part display exploring the reason why art works by some of the biggest names in Pop Art found a home at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. This exhibition features some of the earliest works acquired for the Art Gallery’s collection over the last 50

years and tells the story behind the collection, which began in the mid-sixties with the purchase of the ICA print portfolio printed at Kelpra Studios in 1964. This included work by Derek Boshier, Peter Philips, Bridget Riley, Peter Blake, Patrick Caulfield and other contemporary artists of the time. In the last 50 years, this collection has become one of the strongest regional collections in the UK, with the addition of other stars of the Pop era including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Hamilton and Pauline Boty.

NEW ART WEST MIDLANDS 2014 ART GALLERY 15 FEBRUARY – 10 MAY 2014 New Art West Midlands 2014 showcases exciting new work from artists who have recently graduated from art schools in the West Midlands region. Painting, sculpture, printmaking and film will all be represented in the exhibition, demonstrating a variety of artistic approaches, influences and ideas. The exhibition will also be taking place across three other partnership venues: Birmingham Art Gallery, Grand Union and The Barber Institute of Fine Arts.

BESIDE THE SEA BILSTON GALLERY 12 APRIL – 14 JUNE 2014

ALL THAT GLISTERS: 18th CENTURY STEEL JEWELLERY BANTOCK HOUSE 9 MAY – 10 AUGUST 2014 In the 1700s, Wolverhampton was highly regarded as a centre for the production of cut steel jewellery. Fashionable brooches, buckles and buttons were carefully crafted by riveting steel ‘gems’ to a base of thin sheet metal and then individually shaped and polished. Although they were often worn as a substitute to precious jewels they were still quite expensive as buckles for a pair of shoes could take up to two weeks to handcraft.

Donkey rides and rock pooling, windbreaks and deckchairs, buckets and spades, 99’s and sandcastles… experience all that the seaside has to offer without travelling to the coast, with this fun exhibition for all the family! Beside the Sea is full of craft inspired by British beaches, life on the coast and seaside holidays. Included in the exhibition are Ian McKay’s quirky automata boating scenes made from British hard woods and found objects, and charming seaside scenes in textiles and ceramics by Flossy Teacake. Discover more about the British coastline and how makers are inspired by it through lots of hands-on interactives.

Wolverhampton master-craftsman John Worralow made pieces of such gossamer airiness that they were admired by followers of fashion all over Europe, and in 1782 he was appointed steel jeweller to George III. © Bantock House Museum

JUNCTION 5 ART GALLERY

COLD TEA ART GALLERY

8 FEBRUARY – 8 MARCH 2014

JOHN RIDOUT – A LIFE IN PAINTING BILSTON GALLERY

This exhibition comprises five dedicated local artists of varying technique and artistic approach but who complement each other with drive and determination to produce new and exploratory contemporary art.

15 MARCH – 12 APRIL 2014 A retrospective exhibition of paintings of the Midlands over scores of years, cataloguing changes and the disappearance of perhaps a better time and landscape.

Cold Tea delivers diversity through the exploration of the phenomenology of colour and unreality executed through the materiality of paint and photographic images. Each work has involved reflection, introspection and creative thought to resolve an idea.

AT PASSION’S EDGE BILSTON GALLERY 8 FEBRUARY – 8 MARCH 2014 This exhibition by Sid Turner is a gentle exploration in sculpture and imagery of the Latin verb Devio which means ‘to stray’. Deviance describes actions or behaviours that violate social norms. However these conventions differ from culture to culture.

LEARNING TEAM SHOWCASE ART GALLERY 15 MARCH – 12 APRIL 2014 A showcase of the work of the WAVE learning team during 2013-14.

18 APRIL – 17 MAY 2014

CONNECTIONS – LAND AND SKY BILSTON GALLERY 19 APRIL – 17 MAY 2014 This exhibition shows the creative work of three textile artists, Susan Walker, Val Brewin and Dorothy Deakin, who use stitch in innovative ways. Their inspirations come from Africa, Cornwall and Orkney.

LANDSCAPES – CHAPTERS OF IMPERMANENCE BILSTON GALLERY 24 MAY – 21 JUNE 2014 This exhibition brings together two different artists responding to the same landscapes from different perspectives. Julie Edwards’ semi-abstract and expressive paintings shown alongside John Edwards’ intimate photographs reflect the land’s fleeting embrace and its perpetually transient character.

MUSIC, ART AND BEER ART GALLERY 24 MAY – 21 JUNE 2014 An exhibition of new visual works by five local artists celebrating music, art and beer. In support of the forthcoming Junction Festival in and around Chapel Ash on 12 and 13 July 2014.

The Makers Dozen studios are a complex of thirteen workshop spaces for both new graduates and established artist makers. The studios reflect the historic role the Art Gallery played in art education in the city, when Wolverhampton’s School of Art was based here. The artist spaces are located in a row of Georgian shops and a new gallery featuring works by the resident artist makers and guest artists opened this summer. A contemporary extension links the studios to the original Victorian building. To find out more about the resident artist makers and open studio events go to: www.makersdozen.co.uk and www.mdgallery.info
