With its family friendly displays, the Art Gallery welcomes visitors to explore 300 years of art, from Georgian paintings and Pop Art to thought provoking contemporary pieces. Visitors are invited to explore the history of Wolverhampton and its people in the period settings of the former Bantock family home. With views over the Dutch Garden, the courtyard café serves homemade food, drinks and ice creams to keep the whole family happy. The museum shop has a range of cards, gifts and traditional children’s toys.

FRIENDS

New Public Art Commissions in Bilston Bilston Craft Gallery worked with local residents on art commissions for the new Bert Williams Leisure Centre, in Bilston. Three artists Tim Ward; Stella Corrall and Kiran Chahal, alongside the Bilston team worked with over 1200 local residents creating new works of art for the Leisure Centre. One is a meeting point structure outside the entrance, the other two can be found inside in the entrance and pool areas. City Archives win National Volunteering Award

New acquisition for Bilston

Wolverhampton City Archives has won a national award for its volunteer programme. The Archives and Records Association made the award for the Smith, Son & Wilkie project which saw over 20 volunteers research important records which had come from this prominent local accountancy firm.

Bilston Craft Gallery has acquired a rare Freedom Casket presented in 1937 to local industrialist James Luther Greenway as an honour by the then independent Borough of Bilston. The Friends of the Art Gallery generously supported the purchase with contributions from Bilston Historical Society and Black Country Memories Club. Following conservation the Casket, which is decorated with enamels, will go on permanent display at Bilston Craft Gallery.

MAN OF NOTE ART GALLERY UNTIL 1 DECEMBER 2012 [Extended due to popular demand] Local artist Harry Eccleston OBE was the first full-time banknote designer for the Bank of England. His revolutionary designs of the 1970s have influenced the look of British banknotes ever since. Alongside sketches and proofs for Eccleston’s iconic Series D notes, which feature historic figures such as Florence Nightingale, Sir Isaac Newton and Shakespeare, will be his remarkable drawings of Her Majesty the Queen.

CRAFTSENSE BILSTON GALLERY UNTIL 1 SEPTEMBER 2013 Explore 300 years of craft through fine historic examples of applied arts produced in the Black Country, including the famous Bilston enamels. Compare these with current skill and innovation in exciting contemporary craft objects, many of which you can touch. New exhibits for Autumn 2012 include smelly pots by Jon Williams and a giant flocked necklace by Zoe Robertson.

Find out about the story of Smith, Son and Wilkie accountants cataloguing project, including behind the scenes images of conservation and storage of the records. This display will also showcase some of the highlights from the collection, including records of the Queens Square Syndicate, the Wolverhampton & District Butchers Hide Skin Fat & Wool Co Ltd, as well as prominent local families such as the Manders and Loveridges. Join Curator of the Bank of England Museum John Keyworth as he shares his memories of Harry Eccleston in a free talk on Friday 19 October, 2pm – 3pm at the Art Gallery.

Discover the wealth of talent and inspiration developed in the region as eight alumni of Birmingham Institute of Art and Design’s School of Jewellery MA showcase their recent work. Exhibitors include Katherine Richmond, Stephanie Arm, Hannah Fewtrell-Bolton and Farrah Al-Dujaili. Made to Make is curated by the graduates together with MA Course Director and Transplantation exhibitor Professor Jivan Astfalck.

This exhibition brings together leading UK and Australian-based makers of narrative jewellery who use rich symbolism, precious or unusual and found materials to explore the personal and emotional significance of this artform. Discover stories of journeys, family and social histories and what it means to belong to a place. Each maker has created new work that responds to the theme of transplantation.

THE WEST MIDLANDS OPEN ART GALLERY 13 OCTOBER 2012 – 5 JANUARY 2013 The West Midlands Open has become a regular feature on the region’s cultural scene. Showcasing the best the area has to offer from practising artists, the exhibition is selected by open submission. This year’s eminent panel of judges includes Prof. Dew Harrison, Associate Dean of the University of Wolverhampton, Caroline Douglas, Head of the Arts Council Collection and Prof. David Rayson, artist, RCA tutor and curator. There are prizes awarded for different categories and a top prize of £1,000 for the best in show. BAGS: THE CRAFT OF THE CARRYING COMPANION BILSTON GALLERY 15 DECEMBER 2012 – 9 MARCH 2013 Today the handbag is one of the most celebrated products of branded design. This exhibition presents the diversity of approaches contemporary craftspeople have taken to bags and accessory cases.

20 OCTOBER 2012 – 18 JANUARY 2013 Turner prize nominee 2012 Luke Fowler has been commissioned by The Hepworth, Wakefield; Wolverhampton Art Gallery and with support of Film and Video Umbrella to create a new film for the joint collections of both organisations. Luke’s film focuses on the life and work of the socialist historian EP Thompson and his involvement with the Workers Education Association. Presented in a documentary style format, combining archive and contemporary footage, the film questions our notions about how history is constructed. Luke Fowler’s The Poor Stockinger, The Luddite Cropper and the Deluded Followers of Joanna Southcott was commissioned by The Hepworth Wakefield, Wolverhampton Art Gallery and Film and Video Umbrella, through the Contemporary Art Society Annual Award for Museums: commission to collect.

A DICKENSIAN CHRISTMAS BANTOCK HOUSE 7 NOVEMBER 2012 – 13 JANUARY 2013 To mark the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens birth, this exhibition will celebrate Christmas Victorian style with a display of objects from the collection that may have been given as gifts during the festive season.

ROY GRAYSON: ROAD WORKS ART GALLERY 15 DECEMBER 2012 – 6 APRIL 2013

Roy Grayson’s ambitious project from 1969-1979 features fifteen books of fifteen car journeys across England and Wales to Anglesey and Holyhead. Each journey forms a narrative of time and place presented in both a literary and a visual way.

OPEN ALL HOURS BANTOCK HOUSE

Born in Sheffield, Grayson studied at the Royal College of Art alongside David Hockney, Allen Jones and other emerging Pop artists. He became increasingly interested in language, its meanings and images and this has been an important theme in his work. For many years he taught at Brighton Polytechnic. This exhibition marks his generous gift to the Art Gallery of several key works which he made in the 1980s.

CITY ARCHIVES An historic look at the shops and eating places of Wolverhampton. The appearance of our high street has changed many times throughout history and in this exhibition we look at some of the shops and eating places that were once familiar to shoppers in the Wolverhampton area.

EDWIN BUTLER BAYLISS: POET PAINTER OF THE BLACK COUNTRY ART GALLERY 19 JANUARY 2012 – 27 APRIL 2013 An exhibition of work by Edwin Butler Bayliss will illustrate his importance as one of the few 19th century painters of the industrial landscape. The son of a local ironmaster, his inspiration came from the factories and mines of the Black Country, particularly the area around Bilston and Tipton close to the Hickman furnaces. The exhibition will include work by other painters of the Industrial landscape including the Belgian artist Constantin Meunier.

SENSING SCULPTURE WOLVERHAMPTON ART GALLERY

Tracing the success of art and design in Wolverhampton from 1850-1970, this display brings together works by teachers and students and shows how Wolverhampton School of Art established a national reputation for sculpture.

A tactile sculpture gallery which displays items from Wolverhampton’s collection alongside newly commissioned work, offers visitors an exciting way of exploring art through the ages. Sensing Sculpture will be closed to the public from December to February whilst new exhibition is installed.

Explore 300 years of craft through fine historic examples of applied arts produced in the Black Country, including the famous Bilston enamels. Compare these with current skill and innovation in exciting contemporary craft objects, many of which you can touch.

In the sumptuous surroundings of the Georgian gallery you will find grand paintings from the period alongside interactive exhibits that provide a hands-on look at key themes of the day, from scientific discoveries to the scandals of the theatrical world, offering a flavour of life in the 18th century.

THE BILLIARD ROOM BANTOCK HOUSE MUSEUM Baldwin Bantock’s original billiard room has been recreated to offer an interactive look at the lives of six great men from Victorian Wolverhampton. Find out more about the skills, trades and people that made Wolverhampton famous.

MAKERS DOZEN ARTIST STUDIOS The Makers Dozen studios are a complex of thirteen workshop spaces for both new graduates and established artist makers in the West Midlands region. The studios reflect the historic role the Art Gallery played in art education in the city, when Wolverhampton’s School of Art was based here. The studios are located in a row of Georgian shops, with a contemporary extension linking them to the original Victorian building. TIME PASSING II BILSTON GALLERY 5 JANUARY 2013 – 2 FEBRUARY 2013 Gunhild Thomson documents changes taking place at particular locations in Birmingham over the period of one year with a photo taken each month.

STRATA ART GALLERY 5 JANUARY 2013 – 2 FEBRUARY 2013 ‘Strata’ will be showcasing new works by recent UK fine art graduates. Exploring themes of architecture, fashion, and media, the artists focus on the idea of making as an act of response to human experience. Works shown include sculpture, painting and printmaking through which the artists explore ideas of modernist collage and appropriation, creating works through an assemblage of different forms.
