HOTEL DIARIES BY JOHN SMITH ART GALLERY UNTIL 7 MAY Made over the space of six years in the hotels of six different countries, Hotel Diaries charts the ‘War on Terror’ era of Bush and Blair through a series of video recordings that relate personal experiences to the ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and Israel/Palestine. In these works, which play upon chance and coincidence, the hotel room is employed as a ‘found’ film set, where the architecture, furnishing and decoration become the means by which the artist’s small adventures are linked to major world events. Still image from Hotel Diaries, 2001-2007 by John Smith. Image ©John Smith.

THE HOUSE IS STILL NAMED AFTER HIM BY ANDREA HANNON ART GALLERY UNTIL 14 MAY The House is Still Named After Him presents Andrea Hannon’s most recent body of work. It explores pre-existing ideas of gender and the home. Hannon’s practice focuses on the exploration of how the individual experiences and responds to established knowledge or the ‘already-known’ in everyday life. Combining imagery and objects from a range of old and new sources such as encyclopaedias, magazines, books and secondhand stores, Hannon creates surreal two-dimensional and three-dimensional works that question existing knowledge structures which define us in multiple ways by our biological sex. Roost (detail), 2015. Collage on wooden wallpaper paste table, existing imagery, wallpaper and wood vinyl.

NEW ART WEST MIDLANDS 2016 ART GALLERY UNTIL 14 MAY New Art West Midlands is a Turning Point West Midlands exhibition held at four major galleries in the West Midlands. The exhibition includes painting, drawing, sculpture and moving image. All exhibiting artists have graduated from one of the West Midlands’ undergraduate and postgraduate fine art degree courses in the past three years, including Birmingham City University, Coventry University, Staffordshire University, University of Wolverhampton and University of Worcester. The selectors were: Sonia Boyce, artist and Professor in Fine Arts at Middlesex University and Professor of Black Art and Design at University of the Arts, London; John Stezaker, artist; and Katharine Stout, Head of Programme, ICA London. http://newartwm.org/exhibition/new-artwest-midlands-2016/ Navi Kaur, Budimon at the Supermarket, 2015, photograph. ©Navi Kaur

BIG CERAMICS: DISCOVER CLAY ON A MONUMENTAL SCALE ART GALLERY UNTIL 28 MAY Big Ceramics brings together eight ceramicists who use clay to create ambitious objects on a monumental scale. Their works have a physical presence that commands our attention. From Felicity Aylieff’s giant vases that stand as tall as a person to Clare Twomey’s installation made up of hundreds of components, these works challenge expectations of the clay object and celebrate the drive, creativity and skill that it takes to produce ceramics of monumental size. DAVID WARD: IN A LANDSCAPE ART GALLERY

UNTIL 26 JUNE

UNTIL 9 JULY

Masks have a universal popularity and are extremely important in many cultures, some for religious purposes others for celebrations or theatre. This exhibition will guide us through a range of masks from around the world, from early African examples to contemporary British makers.

This tranquil and immersive exhibition of photographs, film and sculpture created by artist David Ward is the result of three years’ collaboration between the artist and the Gallery. The work produced draws on elements of the Black Country landscape, which the artist is familiar with from his childhood, growing up in Wolverhampton. It includes new commissions inspired by the gallery’s collections of local and industrial history in partnership with the glass department, University of Wolverhampton School of Art.

A BIG BANG: THE ORIGINS OF THE POP ART COLLECTION, PART 2 ART GALLERY UNTIL 13 AUGUST The second of a two-part display exploring the reason why artworks by some of the biggest names in Pop Art found their home at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Following on from the success of A Big Bang 1 in 2013/14, this exhibition features works which came into the collection in the later 1960s and 70s when the Pop movement was getting into full swing. Works by British and American ‘stars’ such as Eduardo Paolozzi, Patrick Caulfield, Peter Blake, Clive Barker, Richard Hamilton, Joe Tilson, Allen Jones and Andy Warhol are all on show, along with press cuttings expressing the reaction of the local media at a time when Pop Art was still considered to be new and controversial in the provinces. ©Wolverhampton Arts and Culture

In fact it was the Grand Circus that the Lanchester’s performed for the royal family at Buckingham Palace in 1938. JUNCTION FESTIVAL WOLVERHAMPTONART.ORG.UK

‘The sixth Junction Festival takes place over the first weekend in July’. It is centred around Chapel Ash, the newly recognised Artists’ Quarter of Wolverhampton, and features music, street and performance art, visual art, an urban sketch crawl, poetry and busking musicians and visual artists. The Artists’ Quarter is an initiative by Creative Wolverhampton to recognise the Arts scene that has arisen in and around Chapel Ash in the past few years. Junction is among many other arts organisations instrumental in and supporting this development.

Junction will be organising supporting events on the lead up to the festival weekend such as an Open Studios on 25/26 June and exhibitions in Wolverhampton Art Gallery from 11 June to 9 July and the Asylum Gallery in Clifton Street from 1 and 9 July. There will also be other arts initiatives in the area such as the Month of July group paintings exhibited throughout July in shops and businesses around Chapel Ash. We are working in partnership with Creative Wolverhampton to produce a West Wolverhampton Art Map that will incorporate Junction venues and activity. As a precursor to the Festival there will be a ‘mini Junction’ held at Asylum, Eagle Works and the
