THIS IS NOT A JOKE ART GALLERY

SOUND MATTERS ART GALLERY

UNTIL 16 JANUARY 2016

UNTIL 6 FEBRUARY 2016

Humour has been used throughout history by artists as an effective engaging tool as it can equally reflect upon the human conditions and challenge authority.

Sound Matters considers the connections between craft and sound art through seven contemporary works from a range of creative disciplines.

This is not a joke looks at how contemporary artists such as Andrea Fraser, David Shrigley, John Wood and Paul Harrison use different facets of humour encompassing the absurd, deadpan, slapstick, word play and irony to challenge and defy conventions, expectations and power structures.

Each work demonstrates a different approach: looking to traditional craft heritage and processes such as weaving and woodturning to create new sound forms, playing with shared technologies and language and revealing the sounds of materials.

WOLVERHAMPTON SOCIETY OF ARTISTS ART GALLERY

A BIG BANG: PART 2 ART GALLERY

UNTIL 27 FEBRUARY 2016

The second of a two-part exhibition exploring the reason why artworks by some of the biggest names in Pop Art found their home at Wolverhampton Art Gallery.

The popular Wolverhampton Society of Artists biennial exhibition returns to the Gallery with a diverse range of styles, medium and subject matter. Founded in 1884 the Society has continued to grow and evolve throughout the years and today it is a respected and strongly supported part of the city of Wolverhampton‘s artistic scene. The show is a chance for members to showcase new work, much of which is for sale during the exhibition period. Find out more about the Society and how you can become a member by visiting their website at www.wsa-artists.com Artists Demonstrations: On various Saturdays throughout the exhibition local artists will show how their work is created, see website for further details.

UNTIL 13 AUGUST 2016

Following on from the success of A Big Bang 1 in 2014/14, this exhibition features works which came into the collection in the 1960s and 70s when the Pop movement was in full swing, as well as some added later. Works by British and American ‘stars’ such as Eduardo Paolozzi, Patrick Caulfield, Peter Blake, Clive Barker, Richard Hamilton, Joe Tilson, Allen Jones and Andy Warhol are all on show, along with press cuttings expressing the reaction of the local media at the time when Pop Art was still considered to be new and controversial in the provinces. ASSEMBLED DREAMS: A HISTORY OF BUILDING TOYS ART GALLERY

A WORLD TO WIN: POSTERS OF PROTEST AND REVOLUTION ART GALLERY

23 JANUARY – 5 MARCH 2016

30 JANUARY – 10 APRIL 2016

From the simplest efforts of babies to pile blocks one on another to adult hobbyists’ drive to build ever more grand and complex models, toys have played a key role in teaching us about construction.

A World to Win: Posters of Protest and Revolution presents a century of posters agitating for political change. From the ‘Votes for Women’ campaign of the early Twentieth Century to the recent Occupy movements, the poster has been used to mobilise, educate and organise. Bringing together around seventy posters from the V&A’s collection, A World to Win: Posters of Protest and Revolution looks at the defining features of protest graphics, showcasing the work of diverse artists, graphic designers and print collectives.

Using objects from our own collections, together with loans and examples provided by local people, we explore more than a century of building toys and find there’s more to this story than coloured bricks! An industrial building made with Arkitex modular components.

Exhibition organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London

BIG CERAMICS: DISCOVER CLAY ON A MONUMENTAL SCALE ART GALLERY 20 FEBRUARY – 28 MAY 2016 Big Ceramics brings together eight ceramicists who use clay to create ambitious objects on a monumental scale. Their works have a physical presence that commands our attention. From Felicity Aylieff’s giant vases that stand as tall as a person to Clare Twomey’s installation made up of hundreds of components, these works challenge expectations of the clay object and celebrate the drive, creativity and skill that it takes to produce ceramics of monumental size. Sarcophagi by Julian Stair

HOTEL DIARIES ART GALLERY 27 FEBRUARY – 7 MAY 2016 Made over six years in the hotels of six different countries, Hotel Diaries charts the ‘War on Terror’ era of Bush and Blair through a series of video recordings that relate personal experiences to the ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and Israel/Palestine. In these works, which play upon chance and coincidence, the hotel room is employed as a ‘found’ film set, where the architecture, furnishing and decoration become the means by which the artists’ small adventures are linked to major world events. THE HOUSE IS STILL NAMED AFTER HIM BY ANDREA HANNON ART GALLERY 12 MARCH – 14 MAY 2016 The house is still named after him presents Andrea Hannon’s most recent body of work that explores pre-existing ideas of gender and the home. Hannon’s practice focuses on the exploration of how the individual experiences and responds to established knowledge or the ‘already-known’ in everyday life. Combining imagery and objects from a range of old and new sources such as encyclopedias, magazines, books and secondhand stores, Hannon creates surreal two-dimensional and three-dimensional works that question existing knowledge structures which define us in multiple ways by our biological sex. Roost detail. (2015) Collage on wooden wallpaper paste table, existing imagery, wallpaper, and wood vinyl.

THE BLACK COUNTRY IN ART CITY ARCHIVES 10 FEBRUARY 2016 5.30PM – 6.30PM

ART GALLERY

SATURDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2016 2PM – 3PM A free talk by curator Brendan Flynn. For two centuries the unique industrial landscape of the Black Country has been a magnet for artists. At first they were attracted by the fiery grandeur of the furnaces symbolising the advent of the modern age. Later, when mined to exhaustion it was a byword for industrial dereliction. As a new Black Country has emerged from the ashes, artists born and bred in the area have revealed the complex character of this changing landscape. This illustrated talk traces the ways in which the Black Country landscape has been portrayed by artists including David Cox, ButlerBayliss, Edward Wadsworth, Arthur Lockwood, Robert Perry and Harry Eccleston.

100 YEARS ON: SUFFRAGE AND THE FIGHT FOR WOMEN’S EQUALITY IN THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY ART GALLERY FRIDAY 19 FEBRUARY 2016 2PM – 3PM A free talk by art historian and feminist Hannah Squire. In the early twentieth century, members of the local branch of the Women’s Freedom League campaigned as part of a national movement for women’s suffrage. The campaign included figures such as Emma Sproson, a local suffragette, and Sarah Grand, a member of the Woman Writer’s Suffrage League who lectured in Wolverhampton about the importance of womens’ education. Hannah will discuss the variety of deeds and words used by women in the town to help further the cause of women’s rights.

SPACE TO BREATHE: THE STORY OF WOLVERHAMPTON’S EAST AND WEST PARKS BANTOCK HOUSE

THE BATTLE FOR BATMAN’S HILL: THE SEARCH FOR A SETTLEMENT FOR THE BLACK COUNTRY CITY ARCHIVES

TUESDAY 1 MARCH 1.30PM – 2.30PM

WEDNESDAY 9 MARCH 5.30PM – 6.30PM

A free talk by historian Advolly Richmond.

A free talk by community historian Greig Campbell.

Following the decline of public parks in recent years, sometimes many of these spaces face an uncertain future. Since their opening in 1881 and 1896 respectively, Wolverhampton’s East and West Parks have experienced, like many across the country, a series of mixed fortunes. This talk will look at how and why both parks were initiated and also discuss the part that they have played in the wider community within Wolverhampton.

In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s Bilston became the focal point of a fierce debate over the establishment of a permanent site in the Black Country for the often marginalised traveller community.

East Park around 1900. Courtesy Wolverhampton Archives & Local Studies To book a place call 01902 552055

Despite the town having historical ties to traditionally nomadic groups, battle lines were drawn between the supporters of a permanent encampment and those who saw travellers as ‘troublesome tinkers’ and ‘caravan squatters’. Confrontations took place over potential sites including Hare Street, Dudley Street and Batman’s Hill. Combining archival material and oral testimony, Bilston native Greig Campbell explores the so-called ‘Battle for Batman’s Hill’. Newspaper cuttings courtesy Wolverhampton Archives & Local Studies

THREE POUNDS IN MY POCKET: THE STORY OF THE SOUTH ASIANS ARRIVAL IN THE 1950s ART GALLERY FRIDAY 18 MARCH 2PM – 3PM A free talk by journalist Kavita Puri. Nearly one in every five residents of Wolverhampton has a family history with origins in South Asia. When the pioneers of this community arrived in Britain from the

Sub-continent they were restricted in how much currency they could bring – in the case of the recently independent India the limit was three pounds. Based on her critically acclaimed Radio 4 series which allowed these people to tell their own stories, Kavita explores the experiences of the new arrivals, the reactions they received, and the communities they went on to create. THE UNDISCOVERED STORY: THE PRINTED CULTURE OF RUBERY OWEN, ENGINEERS ART GALLERY FRIDAY 15 APRIL 2PM – 3PM

SATURDAY 16 APRIL 2PM – 3PM

A free talk by Joanne Krawec and historian Joanne Krawec.

A free talk by Norm Keech on his research into the efforts by a local businessman to record the landscape he knew in the late 1800s before it disappeared.

Rubery Owen was the largest privatelyowned engineering firm in Britain, making components for the world-famous Mini and the first British-made Formula One car to win the Constructor’s Championship.

In 1875 a new law, The Artisans’ and Labourers’ Dwellings Act, put pressure on public authorities in Wolverhampton to improve and regenerate the town. One result was the creation of what we now know as Lichfield Street. Using previously unseen photographs and paintings, Norm explores how the town looked as the change happened.

But whilst its engineering outputs are well known, its workers had other talents to boast of: photography, writing and drawing, all of which they shared in their company magazine and other literature. Join Joanne Krawec as she presents another view of working life in the Black Country, the story told by workers through their own words and pictures.

Trees in Autumn and Spring ART GALLERY

Mixed Bag ART GALLERY

2 JANUARY – 30 JANUARY

2 – 30 APRIL A collection of watercolours by local artist Nick Smith inspired by the flamboyant, talented and enigmatic Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. The works on show are a modern take on the English watercolour tradition. Nick feels that this medium reflects most honestly Freddie’s emotional range; its translucence suggests the remarkable honesty and soulfulness of his song writing and live performance. ‘My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies,’ he wrote in the lyrics The Show Must Go On.

30 January – 27 February 2016 1PM – 3PM (new times for 2016)

5 March – 2 April 2016

Our community gallery will be showing a wide range of work by our Young Artists. Young Artists runs every Saturday here at the Art Gallery and is for children aged 4–12. Our Young Artists work with professional artists every week throughout the year and learn new skills which are inspired by our exhibitions, collections and key themes in visual art. Each session costs £3 per child and our new times for 2016 are 1.00 p.m. until 3.00 p.m. Image (detail) inspired by Pop Art exhibition by one of our young artists

Gunhild Thomson is a photographer who documents the changes to trees in Autumn and Spring, capturing the changing colours of the leaves until they gradually fall from the tree and then again in Spring as new leaves grow. Each series of photos is taken from the same point of view at regular intervals over a set period of time.

Mixed Bag are a group of contemporary artists working in ceramics, jewellery, paper, print and textiles. The group came together after graduating from DeMontfort University, exhibiting together and individually nationwide. Concrete and porcelain vessels by Miranda Bayliss

WILLARD WIGAN HOMECOMING EXHIBITION LIGHT HOUSE MEDIA CENTRE 6 FEBRUARY – 5 MARCH Light House Media Centre is proud to be hosting the homecoming exhibition of micro-sculptures from internationally known artist, Willard Wigan MBE. Willard, who grew up in Wednesfield, creates minute pieces of art which are displayed and viewed through microscopes. He often creates sculptures in the eye of a needle and on the head of a pin and has a worldwide following. Famous collectors include, HRH Prince Charles and Elton John and he was commissioned by the Queen to create a Diamond Jubilee celebration piece. His exhibitions are notoriously busy, attracting visitors in their thousands.

& the exhibition overall will reflect the artist’s view of the region - proving that incredible beauty and creativity is all around us, but because of the Black Country’s natural modest nature, it sometimes needs to be discovered and highlighted. The exhibition is at Light House Media Centre in Wolverhampton’s Chubb Buildings & tickets will go on sale early 2016. For more information visit our website www.light-house.co.uk
