Look out this autumn for one of our biggest exhibitions of the year ARTIST ROOMS: Roy Lichtenstein. Wolverhampton Art Gallery has one of the best Pop Art collections outside London and is now the first regional venue to host the new ARTIST ROOMS collection on long loan from The Roy Lichtenstein Foundation.
(1975), which is part of the gallery’s Pop Art collection and was acquired in 1979 from Waddington galleries, London. It was bought with assistance from the Victoria & Albert Museum Purchase Grant Fund.
ARTIST ROOMS is a collection of international modern and contemporary art owned by National Galleries of Scotland and Tate on behalf of the public. Since ARTIST ROOMS was established in 2008 through the generosity of Anthony d’Offay, ARTIST ROOMS On Tour has shared the collection with some 40 million visitors to 147 exhibitions at 77 museums and galleries around the UK. Through exhibitions and creative projects, the collection gives young people the chance to explore and enjoy important works by major artists.
Now it will sit alongside the ARTIST ROOMS collection of large-scale screenprints from the 1990s and other important works including Reflections: Art 1988, and Wall Explosion II 1965 and In the Car 1963, on loan from Tate and National Galleries of Scotland.

IN THE SHADOW OF ELISABETH PRESENTS: TEMPERED NOT QUENCHED - THE BATTLE FOR BILSTON STEELWORKS BILSTON GALLERY UNTIL 9 OCTOBER On 5th October 1980, Elisabeth, fondly nick-named as Lizzie, the last blast furnace to grace the skyline of the Black Country, was torn down. The demolition of ‘Lizzie’ signalled the end of over 200 years of iron and steelmaking in the industrial heartlands of Britain. This exhibition features the personal testimonies of key witnesses; previously unseen archive material; historical photos and rare artefacts from the battle the local steel men of Bilston fought for 2 years to keep ‘Lizzie’ open. A BIG BANG: THE ORIGINS OF THE POP ART COLLECTION, PART 2 ART GALLERY UNTIL 9 OCTOBER
The second of a two-part display exploring the reason why artworks by some of the biggest names in Pop Art found their home at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Following on from the success of A Big Bang I in 2013/14, this exhibition features works which came into the collection in the later 1960s and 70s when the Pop movement was getting into full swing. Works by British and American ‘stars’ such as Eduardo Paolozzi, Patrick Caulfield, Peter Blake, Clive Barker, Richard Hamilton, Joe Tilson, Allen Jones and Andy Warhol are all on show, along with press cuttings expressing the reaction of the local media at a time when Pop Art was still considered to be new and controversial in the provinces.
This fascinating, permanent display highlights local fossils and rocks left to the city in 1911 by Scottish geologist Doctor John Fraser. You can find out how former collieries and limestone quarries contributed to the assembly of an astounding group of fossils. See a beautiful, fossilised leaf which fell from a prehistoric tree more than 300 million years ago and a 165-million-year-old tooth from one of the Jurassic world’s most vicious predators the Plesiosaur. The Black Country is currently seeking international recognition by becoming part of the global Geopark Network for world-class special landscapes where these amazing rocks and fossils have been found. DOROTHY CROSS ART GALLERY 3 SEPTEMBER – 23 OCTOBER The film titled Medusae, the Latin term for jellyfish, is the result of a three year collaboration between Irish artist Dorothy Cross and her scientist brother Professor Tom Cross. In this work, she combines documentary narrative styles with poetic and explicit demonstrations of the swimming techniques of the jellyfish. In Medusae, Cross combines the observational character of the classic documentary style with references to the imagined and recorded life of Maude Delap, an Irish amateur naturalist, who was an avid collector and researcher of natural specimens from the seas. LARISSA SANSOUR, IN THE FUTURE THEY ATE FROM THE FINEST PORCELAIN, 2016 ART GALLERY SATURDAY 5 NOVEMBER SUNDAY 8 JANUARY 2017 The story at the core of this film by Larissa Sansour titled In the Future They Ate From the Finest Porcelain explores the role of myth in history, fact and national identity and sits between sci-fi, archaeology and politics. The film focuses on a resistance group that makes underground deposits of elaborate porcelain – supposedly belonging to an entirely fictional civilisation. Their aim is to influence history and support future claims to their vanishing lands. Once unearthed, this tableware will prove the
existence of this counterfeit people. By implementing a myth of its own, their work becomes a historical intervention – de facto creating a nation. In the Future They Ate from the Finest Porcelain 2, C-print, 100 x 200cm, Larissa Sansour, 2014

THE GEORGIAN GALLERY ART GALLERY
CRAFT CAFÉ BILSTON GALLERY
THE LADY’S BEDROOM & NURSERY BANTOCK HOUSE
Craft Café is an exciting part of a visit to Bilston Craft Gallery. Enjoy a hot drink with a slice of cake or teacake and choose from a menu of creative activities that are fun for all
ages. There are a range of craft pack projects that you can do on the spot or take away. You can even try your hand at ceramic painting and we’ll fire your unique piece.
Take a look at a fancy Victorian bedroom Black Country-style. The room is full of Japanned ware which was hugely popular in its day and mostly produced in Bilston and Wolverhampton during the Industrial Revolution.
Escape 21st century hassle and step back into a sumptuous Georgian world in our interactive gallery. Surrounded by stunning oil paintings dress up like a Georgian and take a selfie or hunt around in the speciallymade furniture for activities to learn more about the Age of Enlightenment.

THE DAY NURSERY BANTOCK HOUSE
SENSING SCULPTURE ART GALLERY
Be like the most famous Victorian detective Sherlock Holmes and discover the art and artefacts we’ve got in two rooms covering this hugely influential period.
This is such a lovely room to sit in and play or read with your children. Let them learn what it was like to be an Edwardian child, dress up and play with a selection of old-fashioned toys. On a rainy day it’s a great place to hang out.
You can get hands on in this gallery with our exhibits. It really is family-friendly and shares its space with our extended café so you can enjoy a coffee among the artworks on show, which we encourage all our visitors to touch and explore.
We don’t mind if you sit on our furniture and make yourself at home here at Bantock House. Experience this Edwardian drawing room and picture what it was like when the Bantock family lived here 100 years ago.

For an annual subscription you can support the gallery and become a much-valued friend. Please contact Membership Secretary, Mike Neal on 01902 751981 or write to 72, Limes Road, Wolverhampton, WV6 8RB
