Welcome

April – June 2018

Work has recently finished on the new first floor touring exhibition gallery at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. This will enable us to host more touring exhibitions and show even more breath-taking images. The first exhibition in this new space will be ‘Pop’ themed so if you are missing our Pop collection (currently on loan to the Herbert, Coventry) then this is a ‘must see’.

There are more exciting changes yet to come. Work will soon begin on the refurbishment of our ground floor spaces at the Art Gallery. This will see the creation of a newly designed, fully accessible entrance on Lichfield Passage, opening onto a relocated and enlarged ground floor café and temporary exhibition space. From the café you will be able to enjoy views of St. Peter’s gardens whilst you re-charge your batteries. The works will be phased to minimise the disruption, although there will be some temporary arrangements for access to the Art Gallery via Lichfield and Wulfruna Street. We’re pleased to say that we are staying open throughout the building work and we have plenty of shows and events taking place throughout the spring and summer for our visitors to enjoy. Our current first floor café will remain open until the big move so there will still be a fantastic mixture of food and drink on offer.

Back in March Wolverhampton Art Gallery received two awards from What’s On Magazine. First up was Best Exhibition for The Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year. This breath-taking show featured images from all over the world documenting the incredible power of nature. From the ‘First Shots’ category for budding photographers to more established practitioners, every single image grabs the viewer’s attention and refuses to let go.

Thanks to you, Wolverhampton Art Gallery was also voted Best Gallery/Venue in Wolverhampton and the Black Country. This is a reflection of the broad programme of exhibitions that we host as well as the fantastic activities for all our visitors from great drop-ins for youngsters to our regular conversation club for the over-50s, and everything in between. We couldn’t have done it without your votes so a big thank you from everyone here for your continued support.

New Exhibitions

John Myers: The World is Not Beautiful Wolverhampton Art Gallery 30 March – 17 June John Myers’ black and white photographs produced in and around Stourbridge presented a clear and incisive recording of Britain in the 1970s as it had never been seen before. Myers was at the cutting edge of 1970s photography and if he had been working in America he would certainly have been a part of The New Topographics movement, alongside Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz and Nicholas Nixon. After going unnoticed for nearly 30 years this unique record of the people and landscapes of the West Midlands is attracting significant critical attention.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated 72-page catalogue.

This new display, curated by Tom Hicks and Dr Jane Webb from the University of Wolverhampton’s School of Art and Design, explores psychedelic art, music and fashion in the 1960s.

New Exhibitions

The Cabinet of Psychedelic Curiosities Wolverhampton Art Gallery 14 April – 3 June

The exhibition ranges from some of the first 60s prints inspired by Art Nouveau designs to the full flowering of the psychedelic style of 1967’s Summer of Love. Enjoy a magical mystery tour through the curious style that created a bright and colourful fusion of pop music and art. The exhibition also features newer works from the collection as well as examples of futuristic novels by Angela Carter and Margaret Atwood. Taken together these objects and artworks explore the issues of feminism, gender and alienation that resonate through the exhibition.

New Exhibitions

Fiction City Wolverhampton Art Gallery 21 April – 3 June 2108 Taking its name from a cityscape which replaces urban landmarks with domestic objects, this exhibition explores the impact that modern cities, and the experience of city life, have upon human relationships. Fiction City uses a selection of artworks from the gallery’s collection that each explore ideas around living in cities. Prints by Chris Plowman feature alongside rarely-seen photomontages from the influential artist and critic John Walker. Together they represent shared artistic ideas about urban experience.

New Exhibitions

Queen Street Wolverhampton Art Gallery 26 May – 4 July

As part of the Queen Street, Wolverhampton Townscape Heritage Scheme, local volunteers have researched the history of several properties along Queen Street. They have used a range of sources, including documents, maps and photographs, to highlight areas of continuity and change.

8

Their findings make up a significant part of this new exhibition. Alongside this research and photographs will be a selection of archive images, maps and documents that shine a light on this important thoroughfare.

2018 is the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act 1918, which allowed some women to vote for the first time, and it’s 90 years since women got the right to vote on the same terms as men. Wolverhampton played a significant part in the fight for women’s right to vote. This exhibition will explore the struggles local women faced to gain their rights and recognition, focussing on: Suffrage campaigners, factory workers, artists and activists; and their part of the national movement for gender equality.

New Exhibitions

Ghost Horses and Guns Melanie Tomlinson Wolverhampton Art Gallery 30 June – 14 October Working with finely illustrated printed metal, Melanie Tomlinson creates intricate three-dimensional sculptures, some with moving parts, as an archive of urban folktales. The enchanting pieces on show in this exhibition can be seen as illuminated manuscripts which embody Tomlinson’s working class roots - something which she feels isn’t well represented in museum and gallery collections.

Ghost Horses and Guns comes from Melanie’s fascination with the forgotten spaces between urban and rural landscapes. She sees them as overgrown, full of life and somehow magical corridors, and a metaphor for transformation, changing identities, memory and experience. The exhibition features nine new pieces created especially for the show, alongside short stories that merge childhood memories and real-life events to reflect universal themes such as nature, destruction, transformation and hope. Generously supported by an award from the Arts Council England. 10

To mark Wolverhampton City Archives’s 40th birthday, users, Friends, and staff (past and present) have been nominating their favourite item or items from our collection. Items nominated include photographs, maps, documents and newspapers so this exhibition will show off many highlights of the collection, as well as illustrating the variety of items we keep in the archives.
