2009 SEASON PREVIEW In 2008, the Utah Valley University women’s volleyball team captured its second straight Div. I Independent Championship, , and now the 2009 Wolverines are setting their sights on the first-ever Great West Conference volleyball championship. UVU volleyball coach Sam Atoa hopes the momentum gained last year will carry over into the 2009 campaign. “I’d like to think there are some things that we did last fall and last spring that are really going to help us,” he said. The Wolverines (14-12) will be led seniors Allyce Jones, Camie Manwill, Marla Morin and juniors Dani Robison, Lanni O’Reilly, Kayli Broadbent and Kathleen Stevens. With the experienced gained last year by last year’s freshmen Jaicee Kuresa, Faith Tusieseina, Chelsea Fa’alogo, Sarah Clement, and Chelsey Garfield, and the addition of transfer Rachel Anderson (Snow College) and freshmen Lindsay Barker, Erica Nish, and Patti Flagg, the Wolverines are poised to make a run at the GWC crown. “We have huge challenges and we’re willing to accept those challenges and show where we’re at,” he said. “Hopefully we can continue to succeed.” The Wolverines will have an aggressive preseason home slate with matches against USC, Utah, Missouri, Oregon, Washington State and Utah State, but they have proven they can win at home by going 12-1 last year. After playing their first three matches of the year on the road, the Wolverines will play 13 of their next 14 at home. Included in that stretch are conference games with Chicago State, North Dakota and South Dakota. SETTERS Atoa began preparing Fa’alogo (59) for the job last season by giving her solid playing time, and he hopes it pays off for her this year. “When she’s playing her best ball it’s exactly what we need,” he said. “She did very well and we’re expecting a lot of the same things from her this year.” In 57 sets, Fa’alogo averaged 4.89 sets per set, second behind Kristi Lindley (8.22), who graduated. Pushing Fa’alogo is Rachel Anderson (5-8), a transfer from Snow College. MIDDLES With the departure of Kristin Anderson Atoa is looking to Dani Robison (6-1), the Wolverines’ most experienced middle returner, to fill her shoes. “I expect Dani to step into that role and help lead,” Atoa said. Robison had 37 total blocks, while Sarah Clement (6-2) had 54. “She (Sarah) has really stepped up her game,” Atoa said. “She reaches the highest on the team and she jumps the highest. She is a raw athlete, and had some great moments and we’re excited to build on them.” Morin (6-0), who underwent surgery in the spring, could see time if she
can fully recover from her injury. Nish (6-2), a freshman from Fremont HS, will also added depth. OUTSIDE HITTERS The Wolverines will have the most depth in this position with Broadbent, Garfield, Manwill and freshman Barker (6-1), from Springville HS. Broadbent (6-0) led the team with 3.55 kills per set, while Garfield (511) averaged 1.95. “Kayli is the most powerful player on the team. She carried us last year,” Atoa said. “She gets the job done.” Garfield was pressed into heavy duty as a freshman and responded. “She played in that role a lot sooner than expected and learned from the experience and the struggles she went through,” Atoa said. Manwill (6-0) averaged 3.91 kills per set in 2007, but she missed all of 2008 with a knee injury. RIGHT SIDE Kuresa (6-0), who played outside hitter last year, will move to the right side and will battle with Tusieseina (6-0). “She (Jaicee) has a lot to learn, but she’s a physical athlete. She has yet to reach her potential,” Atoa said. “She has a huge block and a great jump and will continue to improve.” Kuresa was fourth on the team with 170 kills while Tusieseina had 66. “Faith learned a lot last year with the opportunities she had,” Atoa said. “She has been determined in the spring and summer to work hard. She has the skill and potential to be very good for us.” DEFENSE Jones (5-3) led the team with 451 digs last year, and Atoa attributes that to her aggressiveness. “There is no one out there that plays harder or with more heart than she does,” he said. And this year he doesn’t expect anything different from her. Stephens (5-8) was third in digs with 129. “She is maturing as a player and with that maturity I expect some great things from her and with her ability to get on the court and create something for us,” Atoa said. In addition to Jones and Stevens, O’Reilly (5-9) adds depth and versatility. “She has been our utility player. If we need someone outside she does that. If we need defense she does that,” Atoa said. “You always need those kinds of players on the team.” Freshman Flagg (5-6) also adds depth to the position.

SAM ATOA Head Coach
11th Season Career Record: 229-105 NCAA Division I Record: 91-74 Alma Mater: Brigham Young University, 1988 The 2009 season marks Sam Atoa’s 11th year as the head coach at Utah Valley. During his tenure, the Wolverines have posted a 229-105 record overall, including a 91-74 mark in six NCAA Division I seasons. Atoa led his team to its most successful NCAA season in 2007 as the Wolverines set a school record with 21 wins while winning their second Division I Independent Championship. For the success, Atoa was named the Independent Coach of the Year for the second time as UVU swept all four major year-end Independent awards. The 2007 campaign marked the third consecutive season that an Atoa-coached player was named the Independent Setter of the Year. Kristi Lindley received that honor after current assistant Lacee Koelliker won the award in both 2005 and 2006. Utah Valley breezed through the 2007 Independent Championship under Atoa, sweeping each of its three opponents en route to its second title in three seasons. Last year, the Wolverines went 14-12 and won their second straight Independent Championship. This year, the Wolverines will compete in the Great West Conference. Atoa’s spikers finished 17-11 in 2006, following up a then school-record 18-11 season and a Division I Independent Championship in 2005. During that Independent Championship season, UVU won 10 of its last 11 matches and Atoa was named the Division I Independent Coach of the Year. In their second season as a Division I program in 2004 the Wolverines finished with an 11-16 record that included wins over Memphis, Central Florida, Montana, Portland State, and Boise State. As well as two wins each over fellow Div. I Independent teams: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas Pan-American. In the first year of Division I competition in 2003, Atoa led the Wolverine volleyball program to a 10-14 record, including wins over Div. I opponents Boise State and Pac-10 power Washington State. Atoa took over the reins of the UV volleyball program in 1999 after six years as an assistant to former head coach Lori Richards. In his first season at the helm of the UV volleyball program Atoa led the Wolverines to a 32-12 record. UV just missed a trip to the national tournament with a tight, five-set loss in the district championship. Then, in just his second season at the helm, Atoa led UV to the NJCAA National Tournament and a third-place finish in the nation. The third-place finish equaled UV’s best showing ever at nationals. Atoa was named Tachikara/AVCA Junior College National Coach of the Year and Region 18 Coach of the Year. In 2002, Atoa led the Wolverines to a sixth-place finish at nationals. Atoa played volleyball for Brigham Young University from 1984 to 1988, and helped led the Cougars to three consecutive National Collegiate Club Championships. In 1989, Atoa started his coaching career at BYU assisting Coach Carl McGown when the program was officially sanctioned as an NCAA sport. In 1990, Atoa accepted a supervisor position in the Intramural program at Utah Valley and travelled back and forth between both schools for a year to fulfill his obligations. In 1991 Atoa accepted the position to be an assistant women’s volleyball coach at Utah Valley. In 1993 he accepted the position to be the Intramural Director and remained in that position until 2001 while still coaching. Atoa was born and raised in Pesega, Samoa, and has a rich cultural and athletic background. He is highly honored and respected in his country, having received the Papaalii or “Son of the King” title from the late Head of State of Samoa, His Highness Malietoa Tanumafili II. Atoa went to high school at the Church College of Western Samoa and graduated with high honors. After graduating from high school, Atoa went to BYU-Hawaii and played volleyball for two years. He earned his way through school by entertaining and dancing at the Polynesian Cultural Center. In 1982 he served an LDS Church Mission in the California San Jose Mission. Following his mission, he moved to Provo and attended BYU where and earned a spot on the club team that went on to attain national prominence. Atoa and his wife, Lori, reside in Orem and are the parents of six children: Sam, Bradley, Devri, Andrew, Darci and Saini.

UVU builds on a foundation of substantive scholarly and creative work to foster engaged learning. The university prepares professionally competent people of integrity who, as lifelong learners and leaders, serve as stewards of a globally interdependent community.
Utah Valley The Utah Valley combined the quaintness of small town life and the conveniences of a metropolitan area to create an enticing community. From the majestic Wasatch Mountains in the east to glistening Utah Lake in the west, there are countless activities from which to choose. For the outdoor enthusiasts, there are a number of scenic trails, including the Squaw Peak Trail, Alpine Scenic Backway and Stewart Falls Trail, for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Deer Creek Reservor, snuggled in the heart of Provo Canyon, is a favorite spot for many water lovers.
UVU VP for Student Affairs
Cory L. Duckworth Cory L. Duckworth was appointed as Vice President for Student Affairs and Strategic Planning at Utah Valley University in August 2003. Utah is known for its natural beauty. Several National Parks, including Zion National Park and Arches National Park in Moab, are popular spots for tourists. Lake Powell, in southeast Utah and into Arizona, is a boaters paradise. During the cold winter months you can take to the slopes to ski or snowboard on some of the world’s greatest powder. Home of the 2002 Olympics, Utah has some of the world’s most celebrated and renowned ski resorts. Robert Redford’s Sundance Ski Resort is just a short 15-minute drive up Provo Canyon and there are also numerous resorts in Park City, just 45 through the same canyon. Those who shy away from Mother Nature can find shelter at comedy clubs, dance clubs and over 100 restaurants. The University Mall, in Orem, along with the Shops at Riverwoods and Provo Towne Center Mall offer Utahns a complete shopping, restaurant and movie-going experience. Honored as one of America’s most livable cities, Orem is a strong family and community environment.

It’s Official!!! The Utah Valley University athletics department was notified on Tuesday, July 7 by NCAA Membership Services of its unanimous approval to lift the school’s provisional status and accept it as an official member of NCAA Division I. The move completes the University’s unprecedented move straight from NJCAA to NCAA athletics. Full membership now permits all of UVU’s athletic teams and individual athletes to be eligible for NCAA postseason events. “The lightning speed by which UVU moved from junior college to become an official member of NCAA Division I is a magnificent tribute to the entire university,” said Utah Valley University President Matthew Holland. “We are especially proud of the administrators, coaches and student-athletes who have worked so hard and with such excellence to make this happen.” “This is another great day for Utah Valley University and Wolverine Athletics. This has literally been a nine-year process with the final seven being mandated by the NCAA,” said UVU Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen. “I could not be happier for our coaches and student-athletes. They have been the heroes throughout this provisional period. We look forward to what the future will bring.” UVU’s seven-year provisional period began with an exploratory year in 2002-03, its final season in junior college athletics. In 2003-04, teams began competing with partial Div. I schedules and a year later all of UVU’s teams were competing with full Div. I slates. In November of 2007, an NCAA Peer Review team made up of other NCAA Div. I member administrators, made an on-campus visit to assess the progress of the school’s transition. The group’s response was overwhelmingly positive. On May 29, 2008, UVU received notification from the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification that the school successfully completed its first NCAA certification peer review. That notification coincided with the school’s official switch to university status on July 1, 2008.

In July of 2008, Utah Valley University Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen announced the school’s new affiliation with the Great West Conference. Expanding from a football-only conference, the Great West consists of seven all-sport schools in UVU. The conference held championships in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and men’s and women’s golf in 2008-09 and the full slate of conference schedules and championships begins this fall. The schools joining UV as members of the all-sports league are Chicago State, Houston Baptist, NJIT, North Dakota, South Dakota and Texas-Pan American. During the inaugural championship season, Utah Valley took home three Great West titles including the women’s cross country (pictured below) and both the men’s and women’s outdoor track & field championships.

Professional Success
In just its first six years as an NCAA Division I program, Utah Valley University Athletics has had tremendous success in seeing its athletes move on to play or compete at the highest levels in the world. Former Wolverines Ronnie Price (men’s basketball), Kam Mickolio (baseball) and Noelle Pikus-Pace (track & field) are three of those former Utah Valley student athletes that competed at the D-I level that have found athletics success at a professional and international level. In August of 2008, Mickolio made his Major League debut for the Baltimore Orioles, becoming the first Utah Valley baseball player to play Major League Baseball.
Community Involvement On March 29th, 2008, Utah Valley Athletics teamed up with the Utah Valley University Student Association for the 1st Annual Green Fever 5k Fun Run and Walk on the campus of UVU. The event, held to raise money for local charities, was a huge success and this past spring, the second annual Green Fever 5k held with $6,000 going to the Orem Rotary charities. Over 400 participants either ran or walk the course while over 200 volunteers, headed by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), help make the event a success.
Mitch Jones
Ronnie Price
Pikus-Pace became the first American woman to win a gold medal at the world championship level when she placed first at the 2007 FIBT World Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland. NBA point guard Ronnie Price is entering his fifth year playing in professional basketball’s highest league. After spending his first two season with the Sacramento Kings, Price came to his adopted home to play for the Utah Jazz. After the past two seasons in Utah, Price entered the summer as a free agent before opting to re-sign with the Jazz for 2009. On June 17, former Wolverine Mitch Jones made his debut after nine years in the minors. Jones played at Utah Valley from 1997-98 prior to the school’s transition from junior college to NCAA D-I. Jones was an NJCAA All-American during his time in Orem and then moved on to Arizona State, where he was also an All-American and where he broke the Sun Devils’ single-season run record of 27, a record that still stands.
