Publisher’s Notes
Time to Clean House Happy April, all! When I was growing up, April meant spring cleaning in the Albracht household. All eight of us worked on the house until it sparkled. The six of us kids would be rounded up to clean windows, scrub walls—yes, we used to wash the walls—and clean the garage. It was a very positive time of year, even though all six kids moaned and groaned throughout the process. I have decided to revive this tradition this year. My house has collected a lot of clutter over the years, and it’s time to do something about it. The challenge is, there aren’t eight of me! Instead of a weekend, it most likely will take me multiple weekends. I am going to clean closets, go through the piles, and get my house in order. Believe it or not, I am really looking forward to this project. No moaning and groaning is coming out of me! I love my home. It is my sanctuary. I know that this process is going to help me on multiple levels. Clearing out the clutter on a physical level helps me clear out the clutter on a mental and spiritual level, as well. At the beginning of this year, I made a decision to change. My shower is my “meditation room,” and I make it a point to take 15 minutes every morning to set my intentions for the day. I appreciate everyone I have in my life. I recite a mantra I learned from Abraham/ Hicks: “The basis of life is absolute freedom. The purpose of life is absolute joy. The outcome of life is absolute growth.” I recite The Four Agreements from the book that Don Miguel Ruiz wrote: “I resolve to be impeccable with my word, not to take anything personally, not make any assumptions, and to always do my best.” Beginning every day this way has helped me tremendously. I am calmer, happier, more productive, and so much more positive. It’s not as if my challenges have disappeared. Rather, I have changed how I respond to them. This did not happen overnight. It has become a habit. Of course, there are times that I revert to my old selftalk, but those days are becoming fewer and farther between. I feel as if my life is getting better and better, every single day. Spring cleaning works—not only for our homes but also for our minds and souls. I know that the more I continue my new habit of setting my intentions every single morning, the better it will get. And I have learned that the better it gets, the better it gets! Let’s have a great month!

Trends Destined to Be Classics Breeze Into 2018 Spring Collections
By Holly Bell
It’s always fun to check out the highlights of the newest fashion trends for spring, but it can be a bit overwhelming. Should we play it safe with classic looks or take the risk that the trend we’re investing in might be a single-season look? There are two great ways to approach this problem: Look for trends that are destined to become classics or spice up your classics with a couple of on-trend pieces, just for fun. It’s no surprise that pastels have taken center stage this season—it’s spring, after all. The fresh take on pastels this year is the predominance of the color purple, including the Pantone Institute’s color of the year, which is known as ultra violet. You’ll recall that the Pantone Institute is an organization of color specialists who decide what tones will be used in all facets of design, from home decorating to clothing and accessories. This year, it’s purple-palooza, with all shades of purple on the forefront. From furniture to fashion, purple will be the energizing color. I think Pantone hit the nail on the head with this one. Purple has a relaxing vibe and is also associated with peace and serenity—it’s just what we need right now! If you want to look stylish this spring and summer and are more concerned with fun looks than longevity, you can try out some of these “cherry on top” trends. Fringe was hot a couple of years ago. If you had the insight to hang onto your fringe, lucky you! It’s making a strong comeback this year. Bring those duds out again for the summer, but be aware that the fringe trend may be short-lived, as many wild styles are. Another big spring look is the sleeve that culminates in a huge ruffle. I do love this romantic look…though it is not a great choice for a dinner date. You will end up taking your food home on your sleeves! Because this trend is not user-friendly, I think it will be a one-season look. Decorative, trumpet-shaped sleeves will be a classic look eventually, but not the oversized version that is popular this year.

CUTOUT SHOULDER

Wearing jewels and sequins by day is another fashion-forward trend for spring and summer. Designers punctuated and embellished the most mundane items with sparkles this year! They’re featured on everything from khakis to racerback tops. Although I am a lover of sparkle, this spring’s focus on daytime clothing instead of evening wear is another hot trend that needs to be taken lightly. If you’re looking to make a longer term investment in clothing this spring, don’t worry. There are many spring offerings that we have loved for many seasons and will love for many more. Americana or nautical looks fall squarely into this category. Bright primary colors look fresh when mixed with white. Stripes are especially good this season, with nautical blue-and-white stripes taking center stage. These looks will work for many warm-weather seasons to come. Pattern trends come and go, but botanical prints and tropical florals remain in the favorites category every year, along with checks. In 2018, we will have a fresh crop of botanicals and checks to love from year to year in both men’s and women’s fashions. One of my favorite prints features botanicals on a contrasting black background. It looks chic and sophisticated yet cheerful and fun-loving. This past year was the year of the cold shoulder. Still strong this year, this cutout shoulder is a flattering, comfortable, and cool look to wear in warm weather. Because of its ease and versatility, I think this look will become a classic. Women are just not going to give up this fun, sexy look. It can be worn easily by women of all ages and sizes because it bares a part of the body that is pretty on everyone. It may not always be as predominant as it is this year, but this is a look that we can go back to for several seasons. Another trend that seems to be moving into classic territory is lace. New fabrications are stretchy, airy, and so feminine. As an embellishment or as a total look, lace is here to stay. Now is the time to start transitioning our wintry looks to spring. How do we do that? Mix it up! Gradually work in bare legs with those boots instead of always wearing tights. Keep wearing those cute bulky sweaters, but wear them over a flirty floral skirt. Those long cardigan sweaters we have been wearing over pants can look great thrown over a spring dress. This spring, the focus is on feel-good fashion. It’s about feeling empowered and being your own person while wearing comfortable, flattering, personalized outfits. This spring, be you! She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion ROMANTIC segments. WE

Wolf Professional Realty, PC Become a Part of the Family By Janet L. Schmidt
Wolf Professional Realty, PC, is more than just a business to Dick, Pat, and Scott Wolf. They’re family, and they treat each of their clients with the dignity and respect they would offer to members of their family. Pat Wolf began her career by joining the IBM Corporation in 1973. She has the distinction of being the first woman hired in the Midwest for what was known then as a “man’s position.” She was initially a customer engineer with the corporation and carried a tool bag to fix data entry equipment. She worked for IBM for a total of 24 years in various technical, marketing, and management positions. Over time, she developed a reputation in her community for integrity and professionalism. She earned her Nebraska real estate license in 1997 and her broker’s license in 1998. Dick Wolf began his professional career in 1972 as the owner and operator of Dick Wolf Construction. Over 22 years, he built more than 150 homes, in addition to commercial buildings, apartment buildings, and acreages. Since 1978, Dick has been a licensed realtor. In 1992, he began selling real estate full time and started his real estate career at Home Real Estate. His first year, he won the Newcomer of the Year Award. As a realtor, he expanded his expertise to include subdividing property, 1031 exchanges, and project marketing. His distinctive visionary approach to real estate opportunities enables him to excel at developing and marketing new projects. He earned his broker’s license in 2006. Pat and Dick’s son, Scott Wolf, obtained his Nebraska real estate license when he was 21 years old. He now co-owns and is managing broker for the family business and greatly enjoys working there. He highly values the fact that Wolf Professional Realty is an independent brokerage and that they are able to operate their business freely. In March of this year, Wolf Professional Realty celebrated the benchmark of eight years as a family-owned and family-operated real estate company with a combined real estate expertise of more than 60 years. Wolf Professional Realty can handle any real estate need you may have, including residential singlefamily homes, townhomes, condos, new construction, acreages and farms, land development projects, estates, recreational properties, luxury homes, investment properties, commercial properties, and more! Pat guided them through that process, as well. “If I asked Pat to attend a meeting with me and the builder or contractor, she would make adjustments to her schedule, if necessary, to come to the meeting,” Cindy continues. “I really appreciated this because she and her husband, Dick, are both very knowledgeable about what paperwork was needed when, how to Whether you are read blueprints, and so on. A Woman’s Work
Miss Sharon’s Charm School Open Enrollment
By Sharon Knierim
When we were raising our children, they lived under the constant threat of being sent to “charm school” if their rambunctious behavior did not improve. Of course, we expected them to be kids and to do what kids like to do best, but rude behavior or the lack of predictable manners was definitely not acceptable. Having grown up in an environment of nearly impeccably good behavior and a great show of respect for elders and others, we found it hard to accept less than stellar behavior from the generation that followed us. Somehow, the world had changed. We did not want to seem like curmudgeons or living examples of Emily Post and other guardians of good taste and behavior, but we did notice a shift in what was acceptable and tolerable behavior. We perceived this shift as undesirable. Enter the world (albeit a fantasy world) of Miss Sharon’s Charm School. Young children will believe almost anything adults tell them, and the promise of a few years in charm school probably curtailed some of the antisocial behaviors that we all explore as we grow and mature. However, becoming the adults we will eventually be is not normally a result of the menace of being sent off to some school where sterling characters are transformed.
14
Still, there was a kind of guilty pleasure in letting the kiddos believe that if they did not behave themselves, there was a certain plan in place for them—and that they might not like it. During the months of November and December, we could always use the leverage of Santa Claus keeping tabs on their habits and actions. The Easter Bunny did have some influence on how they comported themselves in the springtime. We considered drafting help from the Tooth Fairy for other seasons, but nothing ever came of that. Good behavior and manners were important to us. We naturally had a deep sense of pride in our children and wanted other people to like them, too. There is that old saying that nobody likes your dog as much as you do…the same might
www.womensedition.com
be said for children. With that in mind, we had set out with training our little humans to say please, thank you, you’re welcome, and an entire plethora of nice things to keep the adults smiling and utterly charmed. It goes deeper than that, though. It’s not just verbal habits that we try to teach our children. Our great hope is that they truly learn to care about other people and their needs. As a mother, my greatest hope was that the children would live by the credo that “character is what you do when you think nobody is watching.” Of course, that is not a definition of charm, but it certainly is a basic building block for accomplishing our final goal. Teaching by example is one of the best methods available to us. As a mother, I tried to always set a good example, though I am sure that I was not always successful. Being mothered by an opinionated woman who freely speaks her mind in a sometimes not-so-nice way, those young ears in our house may have become confused. Hopefully, they were not excessively traumatized. They seem normal, but I may be biased in that regard. Manners and deportment have changed over the years. No longer do we see gentlemen holding doors open for ladies. People sometimes crowd in line in front of us in broad daylight! Things get said that cannot be taken back, and we find ourselves regularly sharing our own personal space with strangers or other interlopers. What to do? I don’t know about you, but I intend to continue spreading kindness where I can and showing respect. It doesn’t hurt, it’s free, and it just feels good. Kindness and good manners put us at ease and instill confidence in our dealings with others. Actually, you can go a long way using good manners. Miss Sharon’s Charm School never did open its doors to the general public. Still, there seems to be more need than ever for her vast supply of helpful etiquette hints. Nobody seems to read Emily Post or the other stalwarts of sanely good taste. If Miss Sharon’s Charm School did eventually become visibly active, it might be a beginning or at least a much-needed general reminder to all of us. Practice your good manners and enjoy the tremendous feeling you’ll receive in return. You may find that it’s fun! You may even find yourself being a good influence on other people. WE

Making Sense of Mortgages The Right Loan for the Right Home By Robyn V. Powell
Nothing embodies the American dream like buying a home. It’s also the biggest financial investment most of us will ever make. To finance a home purchase, the vast majority of buyers borrow money through a loan known as a mortgage. Choosing the right mortgage is as important as choosing the right home and can mean the difference between placing yourself on the path to successful home ownership or down a road fraught with financial pitfalls. It’s important to understand how mortgages work before you apply for one. Being informed will prepare you to navigate the complex world of mortgages and give you the confidence to sign the papers once you’ve found the right home. In simple terms, a mortgage is a loan in which your home functions as collateral. Typically, a bank or mortgage lender allows you to borrow up to 80 percent of a home’s value, which must be paid back, with interest, over a set period of time. If you fail to pay, the lender can repossess your home through a legal process known as foreclosure. Mortgages have been around since the 1930s. For decades, the only type available was a fixed-interest mortgage repaid over 30 years, and this is still a popular option. Today, traditional fixedinterest mortgages can be repaid over 15, 20, or 30 years. They offer
the stability of regular monthly payments that remain at a fixed rate throughout the life of the mortgage. Fixed-interest mortgages are particularly attractive to homebuyers who plan to be in their home for at least 10 years. The 1980s saw the introduction of adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs). These loans have an initially lower rate that increases over time. Typically, ARMs reset every year for the life of the mortgage. Because the rates are tied to various indexes, they are subject to fluctuations. Low initial rates make ARMs attractive to homebuyers who plan to either pay down their home quickly or sell it in the near future. If you’re considering an ARM, it’s important to realize that intentions don’t always equal reality. The flood of foreclosures since 2007 has made it clear that many borrowers didn’t fully understand the terms of the loans they were signing. Key considerations include how often a mortgage will reset—anywhere from six ›››

months to five years—and whether there are caps on how high the interest can go. Never sign an ARM without caps, and never sign any mortgage document without reading and understanding it. Most lenders require you to place a minimum down payment of 20 percent of the total mortgage. The more you put down, the less you have to finance and the lower your monthly payments will be. Monthly mortgage payments are composed of costs known by the acronym PITI, which stands for Principal, Interest, Taxes, and Insurance. Money to pay your property taxes is usually collected by your lender as part of your monthly payment and placed into an escrow account, which holds tax money until it is due. Your lender may allow you to opt out of an escrow account if you make a large down payment or after you have demonstrated a history of making regular payments. Getting pre-approved for a mortgage is an important step in the home-buying process. It involves meeting with a lender who checks your credit and verifies financial and employment information. A mortgage professional assesses whether you qualify for a mortgage, how much you can afford to spend, and how much your monthly payments will be. Lenders will approve a certain loan amount for a certain period of time (usually, 90 days). A pre-approval letter from your lender provides a measure of security to a seller that you are able to afford the house. In today’s competitive market, many sellers will not accept an offer without one. Being pre-approved gives you an edge over the competition. Home loans are available from different lenders—commercial banks, mortgage companies, and credit unions. Be sure to get information from several lenders; price and terms may be negotiable. Ask each lender for a list of current mortgage interest rates. Be sure to ask if the rates quoted are the lowest for that day or week, as rates can change every day and even throughout the day. Have the lender write down all the costs and fees associated with the loan, and ask if she will waive one or more of the fees or lower the rate. Shopping around and negotiating price and terms can save you thousands of dollars in the long run. With information about mortgages under your belt and a pre-approval letter in your hand, you’re in an excellent position to achieve your dream of home ownership. Good Looks
Smooth Out a Hairy Situation Eliminate Unwanted Body Hair By Loretta McCollum
Spring is here! It’s a season of renewal and regrowth, of sunshine and warmth. Time to swap those sweaters, boots, and leggings for tank tops, flip flops, and shorts. Problem is, we’ve gotten complacent about hair removal over the long winter—and why not? Women today lead very hectic lives. When we live in a climate that requires us to wear pants and sweaters all winter, it just makes sense that if we can save a few precious moments by ignoring that pesky, unwanted body hair, it’s a no-brainer. No one will notice, right? Right. However, before we can “spring forward,” we need to attack this hairy situation with an efficient and targeted approach. There are many methods of hair removal, and every woman has her favorite method for each part of her body. These choices are dictated by skin type and shade, size of target area, and, possibly, medical history. How long has it been since you’ve considered a different hair removal method? I know, I know—if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Then again, there might be something new that you’ll like more than what you’ve been doing. The best way to figure out which procedure might work best for you is to consult with a skincare professional. Waxing is one option that has been around for quite some
time, and it is still very popular. This method is frequently used for the upper lip and bikini areas. Warm, melted wax is applied to the skin in strips and then rapidly peeled off. In addition to the gripping power of melted wax, the heat from the wax dilates the hair follicle, making the hair easier to remove. Since the entire hair root is removed, it takes longer for the hair to regrow—usually, between four and six weeks. A cosmetologist or aesthetician typically performs this procedure in a spa or salon. Waxing is not recommended for people who have varicose veins or who are taking prescription acne medication. Laser hair removal is a more recent addition to the industry and has become a widely used hair removal technique. This procedure is typically performed by an aesthetician or a trained technician. A rapid laser beam pulse targets and destroys the hair bulb. Both

the patient and the individual administering the treatment will wear tinted goggles to minimize retinal exposure to the laser beam. Keep in mind that not all lasers are the same. A trained professional can recommend the laser best suited to your needs. The Alexandrite laser has a high repetition rate and a large area capacity, making it a good option for larger body areas like the back or legs. It is particularly effective on pale skin and is a good choice for thinner hairs. The Nd:YAG laser was developed to be more suitable for tanned and darker skin types. It has a deeper penetration rate, bypassing the melatonin level and going straight to the hair follicle. An advantage of this method is that its penetration level can be adjusted; a shallower laser can target lighter hairs near the skin’s surface. A diode laser has a deep penetration rate and works well for deeper skin tones. It’s a great choice for the bikini area. Laser treatments are typically administered three to four weeks apart, over an average of four to five months. Lasers are most effective for smaller regions such as the bikini area. Laser treatments permanently reduce the number of hair follicles but will not permanently remove all hair. Periodic minimal touch-ups will help maintain smooth, hair-free skin. Electrolysis is a procedure whereby a tiny needle with an electric current is inserted into the hair follicle to destroy the hair’s root, preventing regrowth. Some clients feel a mild stinging sensation with each electrical pulse. Dependant on the client, there are three modalities of electrolysis used today—galvanic (current produces a chemical reaction), thermolysis (short-wave which produces heat), and a blend of the two modalities. Electrolysis is commonly performed on multiple body parts, including the eyebrows, bikini line, underarms, legs, and back. Electrolysis requires multiple treatments over several weeks, but the results are permanent. Any hair follicle that has been destroyed during the treatment will not grow back. The spacing of treatments is needed because each individual hair grows in stages, and electrolysis is most effective when hair is in the growth (anagen) stage. Spring signals a new beginning, so embrace innovation! Ditch those dull razors, nix those nasty nicks, and discover the best way to show off your silky-smooth skin. Event Planning 101 A Checklist is a Girl’s Best Friend By Kylie Gumpert
Planning for an event is often time-consuming and stress-inducing, whether it’s something as intricate as a wedding reception or as simple as a baby shower. That doesn’t mean you can’t get it done! With some organization ahead of time and help from the right professionals, planning for a special occasion can actually be a bit of fun. One of the most important tools for planning any event is a checklist. Before we get to that, though, you need to nail down some very basic details. First, what type of event is it? A 50th anniversary dinner is a very different kind of party than a baby shower, for example. The answer to this question will help you decide what type of venue, food, decorations, invitations, and entertainment you should consider. Second, when will the event take place? The event date determines the rest of the timeline, including target dates for sending out invitations, hiring an event planner or other vendors, and booking a venue. Third, how many guests will you have, and who will they be? I don’t mean you have to hammer out your guest list now, you just have to decide generally who will be there, so you can figure out what they’ll be expecting at your event. For example, your adult guests at a wedding reception will probably expect alcoholic beverages; the high schoolers at your daughter’s graduation open house will not. This detail is vital for calculating food quantities, specific entertainment or games, and even the style of decor. Once these details are laid out, it’s time to create a detailed checklist to help you stay on track. Many websites offer examples of checklists that you can customize to your own event. This checklist will be your closest friend over the next few weeks or months, depending on how large and complex your event is. For large events, checklists will usually start at least a year in advance and should begin with steps like gathering estimates, touring venues, and interviewing caterers. Smaller event checklists start out around a month before the occasion and may include setting a budget, hiring entertainment, and choosing decorations and food. While you’re staring your newly minted checklist in the face, you might realize that this is also the time to consider whether hiring a party planner might be appropriate. Of course, party planners charge for their services, which is an added cost. However, investing in the expertise and connections of a professional can end up saving you money in the end. It will certainly save you loads of time and stress, leaving you free to focus on enjoying the event and connecting with guests. It’s best to weigh how intensive and large your event is with the estimates you get from planners. If your event is small and simple, like a birthday party in your own home, you might have time to find a florist and caterer yourself. If your event is a large, off-site
26
celebration, you might be better off hiring a planner instead of taking it on alone. If you decide to hire a party planner, it’s important to find the right one. A very important question to ask any potential planner is about her area of expertise—if she has done hundreds of birthday parties but never a wedding, you may not want her to handle your special day. Also ask planners what services they offer, like whether they arrange transportation for guests or can find and manage wait staff. Make sure to clarify what is included in the fee and when the payment is due. Ask if they charge extra for finding other vendors, such as entertainment or a florist, so you don’t end up owing more than you expected once the event is over. The perfect venue for your event depends, of course, on the type of event you are putting together. Will it be indoors or outdoors? How much seating do you need? Will your guests want to dance? Is your theme modern, classic, or rustic? Outdoor events may require you to rent tents or canopies, which is another budget item to consider. Make sure you know what’s included in the venue’s estimate. There are other questions you should keep in mind for venue managers. How much experience does the venue have hosting events, and what did those events look like? Do they offer parking or security? What is included in their fees, and what is the cancellation policy? What are their restrictions? Venues have different rules about decorating or bringing in outside caterers or bartenders. If you are hoping to book a popular venue, such as a ballroom or outdoor courtyard, book as far in advance as possible—a year, if you can. Less popular venues may need only three to six months’ notice to secure a date. Different seasons or even days of the week might bring different price structures, so a little flexibility can work to your advantage. In some cases, a venue provides its own catering. If yours doesn’t (or if you’re hosting at home), you’ll
www.womensedition.com
need to find your own caterer. Party planners have likely worked with many different catering companies, and their expertise can be a real asset here. Have an idea of what dishes you want served that fit your theme before meeting with a catering company. This helps them make better suggestions and helps you figure out if they’re right for the job. Sample their food so you know what to expect. Ask a caterer for her references and see if the company offers additional services such as beverage or bar service; setting up and providing tables, chairs, and linens; or even doing decor or floral arrangements. You’ll also want to be clear on whether they can adjust menu offerings for dietary restrictions and how they handle last-minute changes. Some events (such as a cocktail party) require much less food than others (like an anniversary bash with a plated dinner). Some general rules are six hors d’oeuvres per person before dinner; six ounces of chicken, fish, or steak; two ounces for a side pasta dish; and one slice of cake. Just multiply the food amount by the number of guests. Always round up, just to be on the safe side—you don’t want your guests to leave hungry! Experienced caterers will be happy to make more specific suggestions about food amounts when you’re deciding what you want to serve. The food is important, of course, but the work of the florist is what your guests will see first. Florists recommend that you bring ideas for bouquets and arrangements but remember that some flowers are more expensive than others—and some may not be in season at all. Keep an open mind and ask to see sample arrangements in advance. Finding entertainment for an event is limited only by your
imagination and your budget. Whether you keep it simple by hiring a DJ or you want to book a performer who spits and dances with fire, it’s important to meet with the entertainers themselves to ensure that they will meet your expectations. Ask about other events they’ve done, and reach out to their references. To avoid surprise costs, make sure to clarify their proposed fees. One of the later items on the planning checklist is creating invitations. For larger events, invitations should go out at least a couple of months in advance. For smaller ones, a few weeks will do just fine. If your event is centered around a major holiday or will require travel, consider sending a simple save-the-date card several months ahead of time. Creating invitations can be fun. Local retailers of fine papers are a great place to start, as they may have in-house designers to work with you. Some invitation trends for 2018 include funky calligraphy that mixes contemporary with traditional, dark and metallic coloring, and watercolor or marbled backgrounds. For large events, an RSVP is essential to ensure accurate numbers for seating arrangements and food. Invitations should be sent by mail, but don’t be afraid to send email or social media reminders to guests who don’t respond by the requested date. There’s no denying that planning for a special event is a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be a pain! Start early, explore your resources, find a professional whose expertise you can lean on, and get to work. If you stick to your checklist, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy your event with your guests. Dignity in Life Southlake Village Rehabilitation and Care Center
By Kit Boesch
Alison Cullinan describes Southlake Village Rehabilitation and Care Center as “one of the most emotionally healthy working environments I could ever hope to have.” Alison is a registered and licensed occupational therapist (OTR/L) and a certified lympedema therapist (CLT). She is part of a team of therapists at Southlake Village, including four occupational therapists, three physical therapists, one speech therapist, and four physical therapy assistants. This impressive team helps the residents of Southlake Village to live their lives as fully as possible. Southlake Village is a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center for adults. The staff works to promote maximum independence for their residents. In many ways, Southlake creates a comfortable, homelike atmosphere as they maintain their core values of integrity, teamwork, and excellence. Names for short and long-term care areas reflect the heart and soul of Lincoln—different areas within the facility are known
28
as Havelock, Cornhusker, Belmont, Woods Park, College View, Haymarket. Southlake Village helps residents feel at home with beautiful finishes in each room, shadow boxes decorated by the long-term residents, and living rooms with large televisions and fireplaces, where family and friends can enjoy a visit. Three beautifully landscaped courtyards provide outdoor sitting areas for residents and their guests, as well as Wi-Fi throughout. Seniors facing the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia will find a safe environment at Southlake Village. Programs are very individualized,

focusing on the residents’ wide range of needs and abilities. Family involvement is always encouraged. It is said that movement is a medicine for creating change in a person’s physical, emotional, and mental states. Highlights of Southlake Village include the Husker-themed therapy gyms, where residents learn and relearn how to move properly. Everything in the rooms is intended to support and encourage victory, from the red-and-white walls emblazoned with the “N” we know and love to the words of encouragement, painted in bold letters: “Not the victory but the action; Not the goal but the game; In the deed, the glory.” Weights, elastic bands, and balance boards are available for supervised individual work. The Southlake Village’s physical therapy program includes the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill. This incredible piece of equipment was designed by NASA. When you use the antigravity treadmill, your lower body is encased in a chamber of pressurized air that counteracts the force of gravity. This reduces the impact that your lower body feels while you walk or run, allowing you to move with less effort and pain. This equipment allows both short-term and long-term residents at Southlake Village to exercise in a fall-safe, comfortable environment, in spite of injuries or medical conditions that would otherwise impair movement. The larger common area houses the kitchen, restrooms, and laundry. These locations help occupational therapists work with short-term residents who will be returning home to navigate their own kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. There are private rooms for speech therapy, ultrasound treatments, and manipulated therapy. A speech therapist is on staff daily,
working with residents on issues such as swallowing, speech disorders, and cognition. In Southlake Village’s peaceful chapel, weekly spiritual support is provided to residents and their families. In addition, residents are provided transportation services, life enrichment programing, beauty and barber shop services, and—the most popular place in Southlake Village—the Village Café, which features soft-serve ice cream and popcorn. Recovering from an accident is hard work—just ask Southlake Village resident and therapy patient Kay Farwell. I noticed Kay on my visit to Southlake Village because she happened to be reading a book by one of my favorite authors. She and I got to talking, and she shared that she had fallen twice and was undergoing occupational and physical therapy for her shoulder, hip, and arm. How does she like the care she’s receiving at Southlake Village? “Honey,” she says, “it is super awesome!” Southlake Village has its own flag flying out front, with the motto “Dignity in Life.” This truly expresses the mission and passion of the organization and its staff. Whether their residents are staying for a short rehabilitation or for long-term care, providing high quality of life is Southlake Village’s top priority. This is one of the many reasons they are among the most respected in their field and why we in Lincoln are so very fortunate to have them in our community. Southlake Village Rehabilitation and Care Center is located at 9401 Andermatt Drive, in Lincoln. You can reach them by phone at 402-327-6300 or learn more online at southlakevillagerehab.com. WE

Trinity Chiropractic Want to turn your or another person’s life around? Could it be as easy as being kind? The Dalai Lama wrote, “Be kind whenever possible; it is always possible.” Catch that? It is ALWAYS possible! A devotional I read mentioned Jesus healed others in two primary ways: (1) By his touch; (2) By his words. His hands and/or his speech affected everyone he encountered. Do you realize that your touch and words have an effect on others? Question is: do they heal or do they harm? Leo Buscaglia said it best, “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring (being kind), all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” Visit www.trinitychiro.com—then love others well. Add Some Gratitude to Your Attitude A Little Appreciation Goes a Long Way “We create our lives, with every thought every minute of every day.” —Unknown
By Janet Van deWalle
Have you ever noticed how much your attitude is tied to how well your day goes? There are times when I wake up and I just know I’m going to have a great day. Other times, the reverse happens. I am a firm believer that our attitude directly affects what happens in our lives. Lately, I have turned my focus toward bringing more positivity into my life. I am making a conscious effort to be more appreciative and more grateful for what I have in my life. If you are looking for ways to improve your attitude, here are few suggestions on how to add some gratitude to your attitude. These are a few steps I have been taking and have found helpful: Spend a few minutes each day making a list of things you are grateful for. I come up with a list of at least five things in my personal life and in my professional life. These don’t have to be huge things. Sometimes it may be more challenging than others, but you can always find a few little things. Perhaps it was a customer who gave you a compliment or a wonderful meal you shared with your spouse.
When I’m starting to feel frustrated, I try to just stop. I take a moment to revisit that list I started and add to it. Remember, time-outs aren’t just for little children to stop and think about what they’ve done. Adults can use the occasional time-out, as well, to reflect and change their attitudes. Breathe! I often find I am unconsciously holding my breath or not breathing deeply, especially when I start down a path of negativity. When someone cuts me off in traffic or is rude to me, my first instinct is to react negatively. Over the last couple of weeks, I have been focusing on trying to put myself in the other person’s shoes. I realize that I have accidentally cut someone off in traffic, and perhaps I may have come off as rude once or twice (hey, I’m not perfect). In other words, I try to realize there are other things going on in their lives that I don’t know about. While none of these little shifts have led to major life changes— yet—I certainly have become more self-aware. Overall, I just feel better when I am spending more time being appreciative of everything I have. Try adding a bit more gratitude to your life and see what it gets you.
“I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness—it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practicing gratitude.”—Brene Brown
“Gratitude helps you to grow and expand; gratitude brings joy and laughter into your life and into the lives of all those around you.”—Eileen Caddy

Dread Birthdays? Consider the Alternative! A Good Attitude Toward Aging My college friend, Terri, recently called and bemoaned the fact that she was coming up on a “landmark” birthday. “Do you realize how old we are?” she exclaimed. “Our class just held a 50-year reunion!” We reminisced about the anticipation we felt as kids, looking forward to landmark birthdays: At 13, we weren’t considered “kids” anymore; at 16, we could get a driver’s license; at 18, we could vote; at 21, we could go to bars. Ah, youth! Our attitudes toward aging certainly change over time. We remembered dreading the years that our age ended in a zero. The excitement about birthdays was gone! We recalled the decades. Turning 30 wasn’t so bad, but turning 40 was a disaster...we were over the hill. At 50, we were old…even AARP thought so, according to the helpful membership information they sent to our homes. At 60, we were thinking about retirement. We were grandparents. Our hair was turning gray and our skin was wrinkled. Weight was easier to put on and harder to lose. All the things we’d overheard our parents talking about were happening to us. Ugh! In talking with friends of all ages since then, I find that the “I dread aging” attitude isn’t as prevalent as Terri and I thought. Jill says she is looking forward to her 45th birthday because “the kids will be old enough to not need a sitter, and John and I can do more.” Mandy says she didn’t mind when she turned 50, but she isn’t looking forward to turning 60. “I don’t know why it

sounds so old…maybe it’s because so many in our family died in their 60s,” she reasons. Barbara won’t tell anyone how old she is. “I’m going to be like Jack Benny and stay 39 forever,” she boasts. I like my mom’s attitude. We had just celebrated her 100th birthday, and everyone was talking about age. “I’m 21 for the second time,” my son bragged. Mom was quiet for a minute, then announced, “In five years, I’ll be 21 for the fifth time…maybe I’d better put it on my calendar so I don’t forget.” Judy described herself as “fifty-fifteen” instead of 65. Billie claimed she just turned 30 again…and then whispered, “for the third time.” I’m going to celebrate a landmark birthday this month. For the past year, whenever anyone has asked my age, I’ve told them, “I’m 37 (again) and, on my next birthday, I’ll be 25 (again).” They usually look confused and mutter something about their mental math skills. It’s fun to come up with a way to state your age that makes people think. Mickey is going to be 48 but tells us he’ll be “24 for the second time,” or “12 for the fourth time,” or “eight for the sixth time,” or “six for the eighth time.” Considering the alternative, aging isn’t so bad. Happy birthday! Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Too Busy to Go Back to School? Think Again. Continued Education for Everyone By Leslie Byrne
If you think that everyone you know is going back to school, you may be right. Between online courses, accelerated programs, and certificate programs, people are lining up for continued education, and they’re doing it in ways that work for them and their families. The reasons that people want to continue their education haven’t changed: career advancement, higher income potential, career change, or completion of a degree program that was started but not finished. Because of changes to the structure of continued education, finding the time and money to go back to school has gotten a little easier. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is the most popular degree for adults going back to school. Finance, accounting, and computer science are also popular fields. The most lucrative graduate degree program is biomedical engineering, followed by computer science and physics. A master’s degree in finance, management, math, or statistics will also tend to pay off financially. Even if what you want to study isn’t likely to land you a lucrative paycheck, don’t let that stop you from signing up for courses. Could specific courses further your career? For example, if you lack management experience, taking a few project management courses may be all that you need to develop the skills to take on projects at work, which could lead to a promotion. You may find that taking non-credit courses or completing an online certification program is the boost that your career needs. Let’s take a look at some of the ways to fit continued education into your life. On-campus classes are usually offered during the day, though some schools offer evening and weekend classes. You’ll find that the classroom is a familiar learning environment. You’ll have immediate access to the instructor and the other students, so you can get instant feedback. On the other hand, you’ll have to accept set class times, parking hassles, and, often, more expensive tuition. Online course work has really opened the door to going back to school or finishing a degree program. Make sure the program you’re looking at is accredited. Start with an online search, speak with representatives from the program or school, and read student reviews. The main benefit of online courses is obvious: flexibility. You can do your classwork anytime, anywhere. This means that you can work around your other responsibilities, and you can access programs at distant schools without having to travel. Of course, online classes are not for everyone. They require selfdiscipline and the ability to navigate a program mostly without help. You will still have access to instructors and students, but interaction will be limited. The purpose of an accelerated program is to finish courses as quickly as possible. They are popular in
34
fields like nursing, where people who are already working in the field want to gain more skills and certifications. Both undergraduate and graduate accelerated programs are available and may entail a blend of campus classes and online courses that can include recorded lectures and discussion forums. The main advantage of an accelerated program is that you cover the same amount of material as a traditional class but in a shorter amount of time. This is also the program’s main drawback—students in an accelerated degree program will find themselves with a full schedule and much less free time than students in a traditional program. If you’re looking to move up in the field you’re already in, you might not need another degree. For a competitive edge in your career, consider an online certificate program. These programs are generally cost-effective, though they can be just as challenging as courses in a degree program. They’re usually subject-specific and can often help students meet licensing requirements. They’re also a great way to build skills in new areas like digital and social media marketing—subjects that didn’t exist when many adults were undergraduates. Many community colleges offer affordable online and on-campus non-credit courses. These are a great way to follow a passion or learn a new skill. They can also be an opportunity to dabble in a new career field before taking on the financial and time commitment of going back to school full-time. If the cost of continued education is a concern, work with the school to learn what financial aid and scholarships are available. Also, check to see if your employer offers a tuition reimbursement program as a part of your benefits package. Many employers have added tuition reimbursement to their suite of benefits to attract and keep talent. Talk it through carefully with your company to make sure you don’t have trouble getting reimbursed. The interest in continued education for adults over 50 is growing. Take a look at what continued education could do for you and your career. It’s never too late to learn something new! Positive Perspective
Your Hot Button Of Joy Finding Our Way Back to a Better Feeling Place What makes you happy, I mean REALLY happy? I’m not talking about the things that happen in your life that bring a little smile to your face. I’m talking about experiences that when they are happening, you feel so connected, so in touch with who you are, and so exhilarated that you can’t get enough of it. It’s the kind of experience that when you remember the event, you find yourself laughing out loud over and over again. “At the height of laughter, the universe is flung into a kaleidoscope of new possibilities.” —Jean Houston Everyone has a specific “hot button of joy” that they can always rely on to bring them back to their place of connectedness. It’s important to discover/rediscover this part of ourselves so that we can always find our way back to a better feeling place. For me, it’s easy. My hot button of joy is music. “Music is an outburst of the soul.” —Frederick Deliu Now, I am a child of the ’70s. Some of you may remember those days. Some of you may not, either because you were just a babe in the woods back then, not yet born—or you had way too much fun during that particular decade! Music was my mentor, my solace, and my friend. I could have had a horrible day, but I would

come home and put on a rock ’n’ roll album, and it was as if all of the negative stuff went away. “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” —Berthold Auerbach The great thing about discovering/rediscovering your hot button of joy is that once you get it, no one can take it away from you. You may forget it for a while. You may choose to ignore it. But remember—it is always there, waiting for you to come back to it. “The only joy in the world is to begin.”—Cesare Pavese I’ve made the decision to rediscover my hot button of joy. Last weekend, I turned up my surround sound system louder than it had ever been before. Oh my, how much fun I had! “If you’re looking for youth, you’re looking for longevity, just take a dose of rock ‘n’ roll. It keeps you going. Just like the caffeine in your coffee. Rock ‘n’ roll is good for the soul, for the well-being, for the psyche, for your everything. I love it. I can’t even picture being without rock ‘n’ roll.” —Hank Ballard So, what’s your hot button of joy?
