Time to Clean House Happy April, all! When I was growing up, April meant spring cleaning in the Albracht household. All eight of us worked on the house until it sparkled. The six of us kids would be rounded up to clean windows, scrub walls—yes, we used to wash the walls—and clean the garage. It was a very positive time of year, even though all six kids moaned and groaned throughout the process. I have decided to revive this tradition this year. My house has collected a lot of clutter over the years, and it’s time to do something about it. The challenge is, there aren’t eight of me! Instead of a weekend, it most likely will take me multiple weekends. I am going to clean closets, go through the piles, and get my house in order. Believe it or not, I am really looking forward to this project. No moaning and groaning is coming out of me! I love my home. It is my sanctuary. I know that this process is going to help me on multiple levels. Clearing out the clutter on a physical level helps me clear out the clutter on a mental and spiritual level, as well. At the beginning of this year, I made a decision to change. My shower is my “meditation room,” and I make it a point to take 15 minutes every morning to set my intentions for the day. I appreciate everyone I have in my life. I recite a mantra I learned from Abraham/ Hicks: “The basis of life is absolute freedom. The purpose of life is absolute joy. The outcome of life is absolute growth.” I recite The Four Agreements from the book that Don Miguel Ruiz wrote: “I resolve to be impeccable with my word, not to take anything personally, not make any assumptions, and to always do my best.” Beginning every day this way has helped me tremendously. I am calmer, happier, more productive, and so much more positive. It’s not as if my challenges have disappeared. Rather, I have changed how I respond to them. This did not happen overnight. It has become a habit. Of course, there are times that I revert to my old self-talk, but those days are becoming fewer and farther between. I feel as if my life is getting better and better, every single day. Spring cleaning works—not only for our homes but also for our minds and souls. I know that the more I continue my new habit of setting my intentions every single morning, the better it will get. And I have learned that the better it gets, the better it gets! Let’s have a great month!

Trends Destined to Be Classics Breeze Into 2018 Spring Collections

By Holly Bell

It’s always fun to check out the highlights of the newest fashion trends for spring, but it can be a bit overwhelming. Should we play it safe with classic looks or take the risk that the trend we’re investing in might be a single-season look? There are two great ways to approach this problem: Look for trends that are destined to become classics or spice up your classics with a couple of on-trend pieces, just for fun. It’s no surprise that pastels have taken center stage this season—it’s spring, after all. The fresh take on pastels this year is the predominance of the color purple, including the Pantone Institute’s color of the year, which is known as ultra violet. You’ll recall that the Pantone Institute is an organization of color specialists who decide what tones will be used in all facets of design, from home decorating to clothing and accessories. This year, it’s purple-palooza, with all shades of purple on the forefront. From furniture to fashion, purple will be the energizing color. I think Pantone hit the nail on the head with this one. Purple has a relaxing vibe and is also associated with peace and serenity—it’s just what we need right now! If you want to look stylish this spring and summer and are more concerned with fun looks than longevity, you can try out some of these “cherry on top” trends. Fringe was hot a couple of years ago. If you had the insight to hang onto your fringe, lucky you! It’s making a strong comeback this year. Bring those duds out again for the summer, but be aware that the fringe trend may be short-lived, as many wild styles are. Another big spring look is the sleeve that culminates in a huge ruffle. I do love this romantic look…though it is not a great choice for a dinner date. You will end up taking your food home on your sleeves! Because this trend is not user-friendly, I think it will be a one-season look. Decorative, trumpet-shaped sleeves will be a classic look eventually, but not the oversized version that is popular this year.

CUTOUT SHOULDER

www.womensedition.com

Wearing jewels and sequins by day is another fashion-forward trend for spring and summer. Designers punctuated and embellished the most mundane items with sparkles this year! They’re featured on everything from khakis to racerback tops. Although I am a lover of sparkle, this spring’s focus on daytime clothing instead of evening wear is another hot trend that needs to be taken lightly. If you’re looking to make a longer term investment in clothing this spring, don’t worry. There are many spring offerings that we have loved for many seasons and will love for many more. Americana or nautical looks fall squarely into this category. Bright primary colors look fresh when mixed with white. Stripes are especially good this season, with nautical blue-and-white stripes taking center stage. These looks will work for many warm-weather seasons to come. Pattern trends come and go, but botanical prints and tropical florals remain in the favorites category every year, along with checks. In 2018, we will have a fresh crop of botanicals and checks to love from year to year in both men’s and women’s fashions. One of my favorite prints features botanicals on a contrasting black background. It looks chic and sophisticated yet cheerful and fun-loving. This past year was the year of the cold shoulder. Still strong this year, this cutout shoulder is a flattering, comfortable, and cool look to wear in warm weather. Because of its ease and versatility, I think this look will become a classic. Women are just not going to give up this fun, sexy look. It can be worn easily by women of all ages and sizes because it bares a part of the body that is pretty on everyone. It may not always be as predominant as it is this year, but this is a look that we can go back to for several seasons. Another trend that seems to be moving into classic territory is lace. New fabrications are stretchy, airy, and so feminine. As an embellishment or as a total look, lace is here to stay. Now is the time to start transitioning our wintry looks to spring. How do we do that? Mix it up! Gradually work in bare legs with those boots instead of always wearing tights. Keep wearing those cute bulky sweaters, but wear them over a flirty floral skirt. Those long cardigan sweaters we have been wearing over pants can look great thrown over a spring dress. This spring, the focus is on feel-good fashion. It’s about feeling empowered and being your own person while wearing comfortable, flattering, personalized outfits. This spring, be you! Fresh Strawberry Pie Clean, stem, and slice 4–5 cups of fresh strawberries and set aside. In a saucepan, dissolve one and one-third cups of sugar in one-half cup of water and bring to a boil. Blend together one-fourth cup of corn starch and three-fourths cup of water. Add this to the boiling mixture. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes or until the solution becomes clear. Add a dash of salt and 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice. Allow mixture to cool slightly. Pour berries into a baked pie crust or graham cracker crust. Pour the gelled mixture over the berries to coat. Refrigerate for several hours. Garnish with freshly whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Easter Morning Strata Place 3 cups of cubed cooked ham, bacon, or sausage in the bottom of a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Add 3–4 cups of cubed French bread and 2 cups of grated cheddar cheese. In a mixing bowl, mix 8 eggs with 3 cups of milk, 1 teaspoon of garlic or onion powder, 1 teaspoon of seasoned salt, and a few dashes of hot sauce. Pour over the bread cubes. Mix 3 Tablespoons of flour with 3 teaspoons of dry mustard; sprinkle over the top. Drizzle 4 Tablespoons of melted butter over everything. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Let set for 10 minutes.

Baked Cod Heat oven to 375 degrees. Melt 2 Tablespoons of butter into a baking-proof skillet. In that skillet, fry 4 pieces of bacon and 3 rinsed and chopped leeks (or an onion). Fry for 3–4 minutes, until the bacon is crispy. (At this point, you can remove some of the fat.) Add 1 cup of sliced mushrooms and fry for another 3–4 minutes. Add one-fourth cup of either white wine or chicken broth. Place 4 cod fillets on top of the leek mixture, add salt and pepper as desired, and put a dot of butter on top of the fish. Put the skillet in the oven and bake for 12–15 minutes, until the fish flakes.

Holding Nursing Homes Accountable By Elizabeth French

As our population ages, the need for skilled nursing homes is always on the rise. The industry is carefully regulated to ensure that residents get proper care, but understaffing can become an issue as facilities fill to capacity. In facilities that lack the essential staff, residents tend to experience increases in conditions like urinary tract infections, brain bleeds, pressure wounds, malnutrition, falls, and dehydration. That’s unacceptable, says attorney Shayla Reed. Our elders deserve better. Shayla has made it her mission to help residents in nursing homes receive the care they deserve. Shayla’s passion for helping the voiceless get justice was sown when her great-aunt Marie was forced from her family home into a nursing home. “They forced us to put her into a nursing home, and I remember having that feeling in my gut that something is going wrong, but I can’t prove it,” Shayla recalls. The staff at the nursing home would lose Marie’s essential items, such as her dentures and glasses, on a regular basis. When Shayla visited her great-aunt in the nursing home, she says, “she would have bruises, and other people would be wearing her clothes, and I just always had this feeling that she wasn’t getting good care.” At the time, Shayla was in high school and had no legal expertise or any real way of helping her aging family member, who died shortly after entering the nursing home. Shayla originally worked as a defense attorney in the nursing home abuse field, representing insurance companies and other corporations. However, she found that she sympathized more with those who were injured. It weighed on her conscience. After Shayla won a case against a kind hospice nurse, the nurse told her: “God has a plan for you.” Shayla walked directly into her boss’ office and quit her job. She decided to work on behalf of people who had suffered from abuse or neglect in nursing home settings. As it happens, her prior experience in this area of law is a real asset to her work representing victims in civil cases. Most of Shayla’s suits involve wrongful death of a client’s elderly relative, but she has worked on behalf of nursing home patients of all ages. People with disabilities or who are recovering from major surgeries are often put in nursing homes for 24-hour monitoring. A patient with a condition like Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or severe head trauma may exhibit erratic and unpredictable behavior. While such behavior can be challenging for staff to deal with, Shayla notes, it is important to understand that people with these conditions are not responsible for their behavior in the same way that they were when they were healthy. Shayla’s philosophy is one of understanding and compassion.

12

April 2018

Prosecuting a wrongful death or nursing home abuse case, Shayla explains, is based more on physical evidence than on Attorney Shayla Reed testimony. “It’s kind of like child abuse cases—it’s about the lab work. It’s when elderly patients show up at the emergency room with pressure wounds, when their bloodwork shows they are malnourished. I rarely have the nursing home resident testify on his or her own behalf.” A nursing home abuse case can often be settled before it goes to trial. Wrongful death cases require depositions, statements, and other procedures that force family members to relive traumatic circumstances. The burden of responsibility to hold these nursing homes accountable can be palpable for her clients, which is why Shayla does her best to complete a case in the swiftest way possible. However, if the parties cannot reach a settlement and the case must go to trial, it can take up to four years to conclude, perpetuating an already traumatic time for any family. In the end, once a family has held an institution accountable, it can be an incredibly healing process. When a verdict comes in, and the nursing home is forced to make a change, “it feels really good to hold them accountable,” says Shayla. “I think the best part is at the end, when I see people get closure. I see tears, we hug, and it’s just a healing moment.” Shayla and her team are standing at the ready to help vulnerable people reclaim their power and to create a safer environment for all. “Hopefully, my work is making it a better place for those who don’t have anybody around or don’t have anyone advocating for them,” Shayla says. If you or a loved one needs help, call Shayla Reed at 402-933-0588 or visit www. reedlawomaha.com. Reed Law is located at 3032 South 87th Street, in Omaha. WE

Miss Sharon’s Charm School Open Enrollment

By Sharon Knierim

When we were raising our children, they lived under the constant threat of being sent to “charm school” if their rambunctious behavior did not improve. Of course, we expected them to be kids and to do what kids like to do best, but rude behavior or the lack of predictable manners was definitely not acceptable. Having grown up in an environment of nearly impeccably good behavior and a great show of respect for elders and others, we found it hard to accept less than stellar behavior from the generation that followed us. Somehow, the world had changed. We did not want to seem like curmudgeons or living examples of Emily Post and other guardians of good taste and behavior, but we did notice a shift in what was acceptable and tolerable behavior. We perceived this shift as undesirable. Enter the world (albeit a fantasy world) of Miss Sharon’s Charm School. Young children will believe almost anything adults tell them, and the promise of a few years in charm school probably curtailed some of the antisocial behaviors that we all explore as we grow and mature. However, becoming the adults we will eventually be is not normally a result of the menace of being sent off to some school where sterling characters are transformed.

Still, there was a kind of guilty pleasure in letting the kiddos believe that if they did not behave themselves, there was a certain plan in place for them—and that they might not like it. During the months of November and December, we could always use the leverage of Santa Claus keeping tabs on their habits and actions. The Easter Bunny did have some influence on how they comported themselves in the springtime. We considered drafting help from the Tooth Fairy for other seasons, but nothing ever came of that. Good behavior and manners were important to us. We naturally had a deep sense of pride in our children and wanted other people to like them, too. There is that old saying that nobody likes your dog as much as you do…the same might

be said for children. With that in mind, we had set out with training our little humans to say please, thank you, you’re welcome, and an entire plethora of nice things to keep the adults smiling and utterly charmed. It goes deeper than that, though. It’s not just verbal habits that we try to teach our children. Our great hope is that they truly learn to care about other people and their needs. As a mother, my greatest hope was that the children would live by the credo that “character is what you do when you think nobody is watching.” Of course, that is not a definition of charm, but it certainly is a basic building block for accomplishing our final goal. Teaching by example is one of the best methods available to us. As a mother, I tried to always set a good example, though I am sure that I was not always successful. Being mothered by an opinionated woman who freely speaks her mind in a sometimes not-so-nice way, those young ears in our house may have become confused. Hopefully, they were not excessively traumatized. They seem normal, but I may be biased in that regard. Manners and deportment have changed over the years. No longer do we see gentlemen holding doors open for ladies. People sometimes crowd in line in front of us in broad daylight! Things get said that cannot be taken back, and we find ourselves regularly sharing our own personal space with strangers or other interlopers. What to do? I don’t know about you, but I intend to continue spreading kindness where I can and showing respect. It doesn’t hurt, it’s free, and it just feels good. Kindness and good manners put us at ease and instill confidence in our dealings with others. Actually, you can go a long way using good manners. Miss Sharon’s Charm School never did open its doors to the general public. Still, there seems to be more need than ever for her vast supply of helpful etiquette hints. Nobody seems to read Emily Post or the other stalwarts of sanely good taste. If Miss Sharon’s Charm School did eventually become visibly active, it might be a beginning or at least a much-needed general reminder to all of us. Practice your good manners and enjoy the tremendous feeling you’ll receive in return. You may find that it’s fun! You may even find yourself being a good influence on other people. WE

Vantage Point

Take a Holistic Approach to Self-Empowerment See Janelle at Wise Healings by Design By Marge Shoemaker

Are you overweight? Do you want to quit smoking? Are you dissatisfied with the way your life is going? At Wise Healings by Design, owner Janelle Spoto will help you improve your mind, body, and spirit using psychic readings, hypnotherapy, and Reiki… all combined into an uplifting and life-changing experience. Janelle shares her story to explain why and how she began Wise Healings by Design in 2016. The daughter of a Lutheran minister, Janelle grew up in a Christian atmosphere in a small Nebraska town. As a child, Janelle found that she had psychic abilities. She shared this information only with her immediate family. She married and had four children. Working full time and trying to raise her kids became stressful. She gained weight. Janelle’s psychic abilities continued to reveal themselves throughout her adulthood. In 2014, she decided she wanted to learn more about her gifts and went to a local psychic for a reading. He suggested that Janelle learn Reiki. Her continued studies of psychic phenomena led her to medium and psychic Sylvia Browne’s books. Janelle followed the suggestion of incorporating self-hypnosis into past lives. She got relief from emotional eating and wanted to get further training to become a psychic hypnotist. This desire led her to enroll in hypnosis training from Diane Rohlfs. The training resulted in gaining greater insight and selfempowerment. Ultimately, Janelle merged nutritional knowledge with the modalities of self-hypnosis, Reiki, and psychic ability and came up with a successful weight-loss program. She is now a certified hypnotherapist and a master Reiki teacher, and she has increased her psychic abilities. The improvements in her own life inspired her to open her own holistic healing business: Wise Healings By Design. “I share my story with my clients,” she informs us, “because I want them to see that what I do really works.” The psychic element of Janelle’s program helps her gain information from your spirit guides about your past lives, your current state of mind, and your future. “The spirit guides only tell me what they want you to know,” she notes. She will share with you information that she learns from the spirit guide to assure you that the guide is who he or she claims to be. A positive intention from the subject (you) and Janelle is the key to a successful session. The hypnosis element is included to help you realize your own potential. By learning self-hypnosis techniques, you are better able to help yourself. Reiki is a technique used for stress reduction and relaxation. It also promotes healing and restores balance throughout the energies found in the body. By merging these three

modalities, Janelle furnishes her clients with the tools necessary to help them realize their goals. Karen A. shares her story. “I have always been drawn to ‘new age’ and holistic interventions,” she writes. Karen first met Janelle at a holistic health fair and took advantage of a free 15-minute Reiki session and reading. “It was the first time I truly felt what universal energy was and what it could do,” she reports enthusiastically. They talked briefly about Karen’s issues with self-confidence and weight as well as recent changes in her spirituality. Time passed. They reconnected when Karen attended a Mystic Fest where Janelle had a booth. “I signed up for a group Reiki session, during which Janelle picked up on my unhappiness at being overweight. She mentioned her hypnosis program for weight loss and shared how it had helped her,” Karen recalls. Karen has now attended four sessions, which she describes as “beneficial and life-changing.” Karen works hard to follow a daily schedule of meditation and reports “an awakening to the cause of my negativity and selfhatred. I now have the tools to keep me in a better place! I wish everyone could experience this inner awakening to a better self and let go of negative thoughts and energy contributing to a less-than-fulfilling life.” Wise Healings by Design programs include Weight Management, Take Care of Yourself, and Functional Health and Holistic Nutrition. Individual sessions are available for Past Life Regression, Resolving Inner Conflicts, Mini-Modality Healing Combo, Pain Management, Cord Cutting, Smoking Cessation, and Angel Card Reading. You can read more about each of these programs online at wisehealingsbydesign.com. Janelle’s recent blog posts include Feeling Talk: What Your Feelings Tell You and Repeating Numbers (1s, 11s, 111s, etc.), which she describes as a method through which your angels send you messages. Wise Healings by Design is located at 13931 Gold Circle (inside Shelton Chiropractic), in Omaha. You can reach Janelle by phone at 402-290-4776. In addition to the website (wisehealingsbydesign.com), you can find Wise Healings by Design online on Facebook. Janelle meets by appointment Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. WE

Event Planning 101 A Checklist is a Girl’s Best Friend By Kylie Gumpert

Planning for an event is often time-consuming and stress-inducing, whether it’s something as intricate as a wedding reception or as simple as a baby shower. That doesn’t mean you can’t get it done! With some organization ahead of time and help from the right professionals, planning for a special occasion can actually be a bit of fun. One of the most important tools for planning any event is a checklist. Before we get to that, though, you need to nail down some very basic details. First, what type of event is it? A 50th anniversary dinner is a very different kind of party than a baby shower, for example. The answer to this question will help you decide what type of venue, food, decorations, invitations, and entertainment you should consider. Second, when will the event take place? The event date determines the rest of the timeline, including target dates for sending out invitations, hiring an event planner or other vendors, and booking a venue. Third, how many guests will you have, and who will they be? I don’t mean you have to hammer out your guest list now, you just have to decide generally who will be there, so you can figure out what they’ll be expecting at your event. For example, your adult guests at a wedding reception will probably expect alcoholic beverages; the high schoolers at your daughter’s graduation open house will not. This detail is vital for calculating food quantities, specific entertainment or games, and even the style of decor. Once these details are laid out, it’s time to create a detailed checklist to help you stay on track. Many websites offer examples of checklists that you can customize to your own event. This checklist will be your closest friend over the next few weeks or months, depending on how large and complex your event is. For large events, checklists will usually start at least a year in advance and should begin with steps like gathering estimates, touring venues, and interviewing caterers. Smaller event checklists start out around a month before the occasion and may include setting a budget, hiring entertainment, and choosing decorations and food. While you’re staring your newly minted checklist in the face, you might realize that this is also the time to consider whether hiring a party planner might be appropriate. Of course, party planners charge for their services, which is an added cost. However, investing in the expertise and connections of a professional can end up saving you money in the end. It will certainly save you loads of time and stress, leaving you free to focus on enjoying the event and connecting with guests. It’s best to weigh how intensive and large your event is with the estimates you get from planners. If your event is small and simple, like a birthday party in your own home, you might have time to find a florist and caterer yourself. If your event is a large, off-site

20

April 2018

celebration, you might be better off hiring a planner instead of taking it on alone. If you decide to hire a party planner, it’s important to find the right one. A very important question to ask any potential planner is about her area of expertise—if she has done hundreds of birthday parties but never a wedding, you may not want her to handle your special day. Also ask planners what services they offer, like whether they arrange transportation for guests or can find and manage wait staff. Make sure to clarify what is included in the fee and when the payment is due. Ask if they charge extra for finding other vendors, such as entertainment or a florist, so you don’t end up owing more than you expected once the event is over. The perfect venue for your event depends, of course, on the type of event you are putting together. Will it be indoors or outdoors? How much seating do you need? Will your guests want to dance? Is your theme modern, classic, or rustic? Outdoor events may require you to rent tents or canopies, which is another budget item to consider. Make sure you know what’s included in the venue’s estimate. There are other questions you should keep in mind for venue managers. How much experience does the venue have hosting events, and what did those events look like? Do they offer parking or security? What is included in their fees, and what is the cancellation policy? What are their restrictions? Venues have different rules about decorating or bringing in outside caterers or bartenders. If you are hoping to book a popular venue, such as a ballroom or outdoor courtyard, book as far in advance as possible—a year, if you can. Less popular venues may need only three to six months’ notice to secure a date. Different seasons or even days of the week might bring different price structures, so a little flexibility can work to your advantage. In some cases, a venue provides its own catering. If yours doesn’t (or if you’re hosting at home), you’ll

www.womensedition.com

need to find your own caterer. Party planners have likely worked with many different catering companies, and their expertise can be a real asset here. Have an idea of what dishes you want served that fit your theme before meeting with a catering company. This helps them make better suggestions and helps you figure out if they’re right for the job. Sample their food so you know what to expect. Ask a caterer for her references and see if the company offers additional services such as beverage or bar service; setting up and providing tables, chairs, and linens; or even doing decor or floral arrangements. You’ll also want to be clear on whether they can adjust menu offerings for dietary restrictions and how they handle last-minute changes. Some events (such as a cocktail party) require much less food than others (like an anniversary bash with a plated dinner). Some general rules are six hors d’oeuvres per person before dinner; six ounces of chicken, fish, or steak; two ounces for a side pasta dish; and one slice of cake. Just multiply the food amount by the number of guests. Always round up, just to be on the safe side—you don’t want your guests to leave hungry! Experienced caterers will be happy to make more specific suggestions about food amounts when you’re deciding what you want to serve. The food is important, of course, but the work of the florist is what your guests will see first. Florists recommend that you bring ideas for bouquets and arrangements but remember that some flowers are more expensive than others—and some may not be in season at all. Keep an open mind and ask to see sample arrangements in advance. Finding entertainment for an event is limited only by your

imagination and your budget. Whether you keep it simple by hiring a DJ or you want to book a performer who spits and dances with fire, it’s important to meet with the entertainers themselves to ensure that they will meet your expectations. Ask about other events they’ve done, and reach out to their references. To avoid surprise costs, make sure to clarify their proposed fees. One of the later items on the planning checklist is creating invitations. For larger events, invitations should go out at least a couple of months in advance. For smaller ones, a few weeks will do just fine. If your event is centered around a major holiday or will require travel, consider sending a simple save-the-date card several months ahead of time. Creating invitations can be fun. Local retailers of fine papers are a great place to start, as they may have in-house designers to work with you. Some invitation trends for 2018 include funky calligraphy that mixes contemporary with traditional, dark and metallic coloring, and watercolor or marbled backgrounds. For large events, an RSVP is essential to ensure accurate numbers for seating arrangements and food. Invitations should be sent by mail, but don’t be afraid to send email or social media reminders to guests who don’t respond by the requested date. There’s no denying that planning for a special event is a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be a pain! Start early, explore your resources, find a professional whose expertise you can lean on, and get to work. If you stick to your checklist, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy your event with your guests. “How Can You Throw A Party and Not Invite Us?” Honeyman Rent-All

By Kate Beiting

In today’s culture, we are all encouraged to minimize our lives…to simplify by getting rid of the possessions we rarely use. Well, that’s great, until you want to entertain or have a project that needs tools or equipment. Then what? According to Pat Honeyman, you call on Honeyman Rent-All. They have been helping solve project problems for 50 years. Their motto: “If we don’t have it, we will try to find it!” Pat and her late husband Dennis started Honeyman Rent-All in 1968. “My husband wanted to be home more, and he thought owning his own business would allow that,” Pat relates with a chuckle. “He was inventive and knew so much about equipment—this business was the perfect fit.” The original Honeyman’s, which is located at 4423 South 84th Street, rents a variety of contracting equipment and tools. That store, managed by Chuck Rouse, helps both professionals and weekend workers. “If you are demolishing or getting ready to remodel, we have all of the equipment you will need for those

occasional jobs,” Chuck says. Whether you are a skilled contractor or a do-it-yourself remodeler, the Honeyman’s staff will help you figure out what you need to get your project done right. Do you need a wet saw, a rototiller, air compressors—even a live animal trap? Need help removing that 40-year-old wallpaper? Want to relandscape or dig post holes? They can offer solutions for all of your jobs. The Honeyman Rent-All “The Party Place” at 11226 Wright Circle, managed by Bill Reynolds, opened in 1970. “This location, when we first opened, was considered in west Omaha,” jokes Pat. Lisa Honeyman-Flora (Pat’s daughter) is also an integral part of the business.

“We rent solutions,” says Pat. “Our customers have great ideas for fun parties, whether they are theme or special occasions. They come to us because we help them organize and build on their ideas.” If you take a tour around the store, you will see a vast selection of linens, tableware, chairs, and decorations to enhance any party. According to Pat, there is no event too small or too large for Honeyman’s staff to help facilitate. Today, Pat is surrounded by family members who work with her, as well as a close group of cheerful employees who feel like family. Several of her employees have been with her for 50 years. “I could not do any of this without them,” she explains. “They are all so talented and creative!” Honeyman’s doesn’t just rent supplies; their advisors can help you design and plan a party to create a memorable occasion down to the smallest detail. “We encourage out-of-the-box thinking,” Pat says. She tells me about a high school girl whose parents are using pipe and drape to create a cozy cafe in their garage for her special prom dinner. “Her dad is an avid hunter, and she requested that the trophy heads not be visible.” Pat’s staff are extremely busy this time of year helping post-prom planners around the metro area. “We are helping these volunteers create intimate Paris eateries, Hollywood red carpets—all types of special effects for a fun prom night!” Pat advises that you reserve your items as early as possible,

especially in the spring. “We are busy throughout the year, but May and June are our busiest times of year, with graduations and weddings,” she notes. Honeyman’s keep current on design trends, popular colors, and the equipment that is in the highest demand. Brides seem to love bejeweled cake stands. “We are also noticing that beautiful church-type candelabras are back in vogue,” Pat shares. “Copper chafing dishes are in high demand, and we always have requests for pipe and drape (creates a room within a room), cocktail tables, canopies, lights, and chairs.” In addition to bridal and prom festivities, Honeyman’s assists in creating all types of social and family events. “We’ve assisted in staging parties, special events, Husker parties, sporting events, bridal and baby showers, end-of-theyear corporate picnics, pub nights, neighborhood pig roasts.” You never know when you might need a large grill, soft serve machine, sound equipment, moonwalks, slushy machines, windmill golf, challenging games, spin-the-wheels, Tiki bar set-ups, hot dog machines. They also have dunk tanks, cotton candy machines, and snow cone equipment (84th Street loaction). Delivery and set-up is available. As Pat says, “How can you throw a party and not invite us?” Come visit “The Party Place” showroom at 11226 Wright Circle, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday (402-333-2882). Smooth Out a Hairy Situation Eliminate Unwanted Body Hair By Loretta McCollum

Spring is here! It’s a season of renewal and regrowth, of sunshine and warmth. Time to swap those sweaters, boots, and leggings for tank tops, flip flops, and shorts. Problem is, we’ve gotten complacent about hair removal over the long winter—and why not? Women today lead very hectic lives. When we live in a climate that requires us to wear pants and sweaters all winter, it just makes sense that if we can save a few precious moments by ignoring that pesky, unwanted body hair, it’s a no-brainer. No one will notice, right? Right. However, before we can “spring forward,” we need to attack this hairy situation with an efficient and targeted approach. There are many methods of hair removal, and every woman has her favorite method for each part of her body. These choices are dictated by skin type and shade, size of target area, and, possibly, medical history. How long has it been since you’ve considered a different hair removal method? I know, I know—if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Then again, there might be something new that you’ll like more than what you’ve been doing. The best way to figure out which procedure might work best for you is to consult with a skincare professional. Waxing is one option that has been around for quite some

time, and it is still very popular. This method is frequently used for the upper lip and bikini areas. Warm, melted wax is applied to the skin in strips and then rapidly peeled off. In addition to the gripping power of melted wax, the heat from the wax dilates the hair follicle, making the hair easier to remove. Since the entire hair root is removed, it takes longer for the hair to regrow—usually, between four and six weeks. A cosmetologist or aesthetician typically performs this procedure in a spa or salon. Waxing is not recommended for people who have varicose veins or who are taking prescription acne medication. Laser hair removal is a more recent addition to the industry and has become a widely used hair removal technique. This procedure is typically performed by an aesthetician or a trained technician. A rapid laser beam pulse targets and destroys the hair bulb. Both ›››

the patient and the individual administering the treatment will wear tinted goggles to minimize retinal exposure to the laser beam. Keep in mind that not all lasers are the same. A trained professional can recommend the laser best suited to your needs. The Alexandrite laser has a high repetition rate and a large area capacity, making it a good option for larger body areas like the back or legs. It is particularly effective on pale skin and is a good choice for thinner hairs. The Nd:YAG laser was developed to be more suitable for tanned and darker skin types. It has a deeper penetration rate, bypassing the melatonin level and going straight to the hair follicle. An advantage of this method is that its penetration level can be adjusted; a shallower laser can target lighter hairs near the skin’s surface. A diode laser has a deep penetration rate and works well for deeper skin tones. It’s a great choice for the bikini area. Laser treatments are typically administered three to four weeks apart, over an average of four to five months. Lasers are most effective for smaller regions such as the bikini area. Laser treatments permanently reduce the number of hair follicles but will not permanently remove all hair. Periodic minimal touch-ups will help maintain smooth, hair-free skin. Electrolysis is a procedure whereby a tiny needle with an electric current is inserted into the hair follicle to destroy the hair’s root, preventing regrowth. Some clients feel a mild stinging sensation with each electrical pulse. Dependant on the client, there are three modalities of electrolysis used today—galvanic (current produces a chemical reaction), thermolysis (short-wave which produces heat), and a blend of the two modalities. Electrolysis is commonly performed on multiple body parts, including the eyebrows, bikini line, underarms, legs, and back. Electrolysis requires multiple treatments over several weeks, but the results are permanent. Any hair follicle that has been destroyed during the treatment will not grow back. The spacing of treatments is needed because each individual hair grows in stages, and electrolysis is most effective when hair is in the growth (anagen) stage. Spring signals a new beginning, so embrace innovation! Ditch those dull razors, nix those nasty nicks, and discover the best way to show off your silky-smooth skin. Add Some Gratitude to Your Attitude A Little Appreciation Goes a Long Way “We create our lives, with every thought every minute of every day.” —Unknown

By Janet Van deWalle

Have you ever noticed how much your attitude is tied to how well your day goes? There are times when I wake up and I just know I’m going to have a great day. Other times, the reverse happens. I am a firm believer that our attitude directly affects what happens in our lives. Lately, I have turned my focus toward bringing more positivity into my life. I am making a conscious effort to be more appreciative and more grateful for what I have in my life. If you are looking for ways to improve your attitude, here are few suggestions on how to add some gratitude to your attitude. These are a few steps I have been taking and have found helpful: Spend a few minutes each day making a list of things you are grateful for. I come up with a list of at least five things in my personal life and in my professional life. These don’t have to be huge things. Sometimes it may be more challenging than others, but you can always find a few little things. Perhaps it was a customer who gave you a compliment or a wonderful meal you shared with your spouse.

When I’m starting to feel frustrated, I try to just stop. I take a moment to revisit that list I started and add to it. Remember, time-outs aren’t just for little children to stop and think about what they’ve done. Adults can use the occasional time-out, as well, to reflect and change their attitudes. Breathe! I often find I am unconsciously holding my breath or not breathing deeply, especially when I start down a path of negativity. When someone cuts me off in traffic or is rude to me, my first instinct is to react negatively. Over the last couple of weeks, I have been focusing on trying to put myself in the other person’s shoes. I realize that I have accidentally cut someone off in traffic, and perhaps I may have come off as rude once or twice (hey, I’m not perfect). In other words, I try to realize there are other things going on in their lives that I don’t know about. While none of these little shifts have led to major life changes— yet—I certainly have become more self-aware. Overall, I just feel better when I am spending more time being appreciative of everything I have. Try adding a bit more gratitude to your life and see what it gets you.

“I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness—it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practicing gratitude.”—Brene Brown

Dread Birthdays? Consider the Alternative! A Good Attitude Toward Aging My college friend, Terri, recently called and bemoaned the fact that she was coming up on a “landmark” birthday. “Do you realize how old we are?” she exclaimed. “Our class just held a 50-year reunion!” We reminisced about the anticipation we felt as kids, looking forward to landmark birthdays: At 13, we weren’t considered “kids” anymore; at 16, we could get a driver’s license; at 18, we could vote; at 21, we could go to bars. Ah, youth! Our attitudes toward aging certainly change over time. We remembered dreading the years that our age ended in a zero. The excitement about birthdays was gone! We recalled the decades. Turning 30 wasn’t so bad, but turning 40 was a disaster...we were over the hill. At 50, we were old…even AARP thought so, according to the helpful membership information they sent to our homes. At 60, we were thinking about retirement. We were grandparents. Our hair was turning gray and our skin was wrinkled. Weight was easier to put on and harder to lose. All the things we’d overheard our parents talking about were happening to us. Ugh! In talking with friends of all ages since then, I find that the “I dread aging” attitude isn’t as prevalent as Terri and I thought. Jill says she is looking forward to her 45th birthday because “the kids will be old enough to not need a sitter, and John and I can do more.” Mandy says she didn’t mind when she turned 50, but she isn’t looking forward to turning 60. “I don’t know why it

sounds so old…maybe it’s because so many in our family died in their 60s,” she reasons. Barbara won’t tell anyone how old she is. “I’m going to be like Jack Benny and stay 39 forever,” she boasts. I like my mom’s attitude. We had just celebrated her 100th birthday, and everyone was talking about age. “I’m 21 for the second time,” my son bragged. Mom was quiet for a minute, then announced, “In five years, I’ll be 21 for the fifth time…maybe I’d better put it on my calendar so I don’t forget.” Judy described herself as “fifty-fifteen” instead of 65. Billie claimed she just turned 30 again…and then whispered, “for the third time.” I’m going to celebrate a landmark birthday this month. For the past year, whenever anyone has asked my age, I’ve told them, “I’m 37 (again) and, on my next birthday, I’ll be 25 (again).” They usually look confused and mutter something about their mental math skills. It’s fun to come up with a way to state your age that makes people think. Mickey is going to be 48 but tells us he’ll be “24 for the second time,” or “12 for the fourth time,” or “eight for the sixth time,” or “six for the eighth time.” Considering the alternative, aging isn’t so bad. Happy birthday! Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Making Sense of Mortgages The Right Loan for the Right Home By Robyn V. Powell

Nothing embodies the American dream like buying a home. It’s also the biggest financial investment most of us will ever make. To finance a home purchase, the vast majority of buyers borrow money through a loan known as a mortgage. Choosing the right mortgage is as important as choosing the right home and can mean the difference between placing yourself on the path to successful home ownership or down a road fraught with financial pitfalls. It’s important to understand how mortgages work before you apply for one. Being informed will prepare you to navigate the complex world of mortgages and give you the confidence to sign the papers once you’ve found the right home. In simple terms, a mortgage is a loan in which your home functions as collateral. Typically, a bank or mortgage lender allows you to borrow up to 80 percent of a home’s value, which must be paid back, with interest, over a set period of time. If you fail to pay, the lender can repossess your home through a legal process known as foreclosure. Mortgages have been around since the 1930s. For decades, the only type available was a fixed-interest mortgage repaid over 30 years, and this is still a popular option. Today, traditional fixedinterest mortgages can be repaid over 15, 20, or 30 years. They offer

the stability of regular monthly payments that remain at a fixed rate throughout the life of the mortgage. Fixed-interest mortgages are particularly attractive to homebuyers who plan to be in their home for at least 10 years. The 1980s saw the introduction of adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs). These loans have an initially lower rate that increases over time. Typically, ARMs reset every year for the life of the mortgage. Because the rates are tied to various indexes, they are subject to fluctuations. Low initial rates make ARMs attractive to homebuyers who plan to either pay down their home quickly or sell it in the near future. If you’re considering an ARM, it’s important to realize that intentions don’t always equal reality. The flood of foreclosures since 2007 has made it clear that many borrowers didn’t fully understand the terms of the loans they were signing. Key considerations include how often a mortgage will reset—anywhere from six ›››

months to five years—and whether there are caps on how high the interest can go. Never sign an ARM without caps, and never sign any mortgage document without reading and understanding it. Most lenders require you to place a minimum down payment of 20 percent of the total mortgage. The more you put down, the less you have to finance and the lower your monthly payments will be. Monthly mortgage payments are composed of costs known by the acronym PITI, which stands for Principal, Interest, Taxes, and Insurance. Money to pay your property taxes is usually collected by your lender as part of your monthly payment and placed into an escrow account, which holds tax money until it is due. Your lender may allow you to opt out of an escrow account if you make a large down payment or after you have demonstrated a history of making regular payments. Getting pre-approved for a mortgage is an important step in the home-buying process. It involves meeting with a lender who checks your credit and verifies financial and employment information. A mortgage professional assesses whether you qualify for a mortgage, how much you can afford to spend, and how much your monthly payments will be. Lenders will approve a certain loan amount for a certain period of time (usually, 90 days). A pre-approval letter from your lender provides a measure of security to a seller that you are able to afford the house. In today’s competitive market, many sellers will not accept an offer without one. Being pre-approved gives you an edge over the competition. Home loans are available from different lenders—commercial banks, mortgage companies, and credit unions. Be sure to get information from several lenders; price and terms may be negotiable. Ask each lender for a list of current mortgage interest rates. Be sure to ask if the rates quoted are the lowest for that day or week, as rates can change every day and even throughout the day. Have the lender write down all the costs and fees associated with the loan, and ask if she will waive one or more of the fees or lower the rate. Shopping around and negotiating price and terms can save you thousands of dollars in the long run. With information about mortgages under your belt and a pre-approval letter in your hand, you’re in an excellent position to achieve your dream of home ownership. Great Finds Consignment Gallery Come Find What You’re Looking For By Marge Shoemaker

Do any of these scenarios sound familiar? Spring cleaning is finished, and you’ve decided your house needs something new or different to spruce it up. You’ve relocated, and you need to replace some of those treasures you didn’t want to move. You’ve downsized, and you want to sell some items. Your new house needs to become a home with just the right decorating. You’re bored with shopping in the big box stores and are looking for something unique. Whatever the reason you’re thinking about home furnishings, you should head to Great Finds Consignment Gallery in downtown Millard. Great Finds is owned and operated by the Twedt (pronounced “tweet”) family. Parents Julie and Jerrold started the business in 2005, when they “considered” retirement. Daughter Darcy Cottone managed the store during the first five years and son Brad has managed since then. He is assisted by employee and room designer Theresa Murray (she uses her bachelor of fine arts degree and her keen eye for style). Dawn Beacham is on board, and Darcy fills in when needed. After years of managing an entirely different business, Julie and Jerrold decided they wanted a change. “I remember once mentioning that I liked the consignment business that friends of ours ran,” Julie recalls. Jerrold brought that up when they were considering retiring from their other business. It was a perfect fit. They already had a building that suited their purposes...onsite parking, easy access, ramped loading dock, and lots of usable space. Word got out to friends and neighbors that the Twedts had a sofa and loveseat they wanted to sell and were looking for other “great finds” of gently used furniture and decorating items from non-smoking environments. Merchandise began coming in. Julie knows that many people are looking for quality, gently used furniture and decorating accessories at affordable prices. “That’s where Brad really shines,” she says. “He has a good eye and a fair mind for setting the price, and he decides if items are appropriate for the store by thinking, ‘Does it look good? Would I put it in my own home if it were my style?’” Great Finds supplies their consignors with a simple agreement form asking for information regarding each item’s age and original cost, as well as any other pertinent information necessary to help set a fair price. Items are put on consignment for 90 days and receive a 10 percent markdown at 30 days and again at 60 days. “The markdown is accomplished through a color-coded system that our daughter Darcy created that works great,” Julie explains. They use colored tags and furnish an explanation sheet every month to help shoppers determine the current price. Pricing and sale of items

is monitored in an up-todate computer system. Consignors, who share the purchase price 50/50 with Great Finds, back l-r: Jerrold and are paid monthly. Murray and Julie and her family have learned the consignment Dawn Beacham business primarily through the experience of being in business for 13 years. “It is sometimes necessary to research items (it helps if the brand/designer is known) to arrive at a fair price,” Julie relates. “For decor items, simply call and schedule an appointment, and you can bring in 15–20 items at a time.” Julie refers to their customers as friends...even if you’re new when you come in, you’re a friend when you leave. Satisfied customers and regular shoppers Dwight and Charlotte write that they are honored to be asked to do a testimonial for Great Finds. They “stumbled across” Great Finds five years ago, not knowing what to expect. They describe it as offering eclectic, ever-changing inventory that is in great condition and is displayed in a pleasing manner. “With Theresa’s decorative arrangements, we can clearly imagine how pieces might fit in our home,” they comment. “Merchandise changes rapidly. Stop in often.” At Great Finds, you will find traditional, vintage, and contemporary furniture for living rooms, dens, dining rooms, bedrooms, and every other room in the house. Accessories include (but are not limited to) decorative pillows, modern glassware, silk flower arrangements, lamps, mirrors, wall hangings, jewelry cases, music boxes, and other unique accessories. You will not find items that are chipped, torn, or stained. Clothing, appliances, electronics, rugs, and bedding are not accepted. Great Finds Consignment Gallery is located at 13448 Old L Street, in the Millard area. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (until 6 p.m. on Thursdays). Add a Pool or Spa to Your Own Backyard By Anne Yankus

Summer is right around the corner, which brings us to the final topic in our series on landscaping: pools and spas! If you want to enjoy the water in your own backyard this summer, the time to start planning is now. The most common types of pools are constructed using concrete, fiberglass, or vinyl liners. Concrete pools are generally more expensive to build, but they last the longest, and you can create any shape or size pool you desire. Fiberglass pools typically come pre-formed, so you have to choose from whatever sizes and shapes are available. They tend to degrade after 10–15 years of being exposed to sun and chemicals. Vinylliner pools are constructed using metal or plastic frames and are set on a concrete slab and a bed of sand. Like fiberglass pools, they are prone to deterioration after lengthy exposure to sun and chemicals, giving them a typical lifespan of 10–18 years. Traditionally, swimming pools are filled with chlorinated water, but saltwater pools have been a popular alternative for pool owners lately. The main difference is that in saltwater pools, the chlorine is added through your saltwater chlorinator (or saltwater generator). The advantage is that they require much less chlorine, which makes the water gentler on the eyes and skin. The downside is the cost: saltwater pools are more expensive to build because of the upfront cost of the saltwater

generator. If you keep your pool long enough to make up the savings in pool maintenance, you can recoup that cost. Traditional chlorine pools require constant surveillance and regular “shock” maintenance every three to four weeks to avoid bacteria growth. Pool construction takes lots of time, so it’s best to start now. Planning can take weeks or months, depending on how complex your chosen design is. After the design is hammered out, it can take an additional four to six weeks for your pool builder to get the plans approved by your city council. This step can be shortened by constructing an above-ground pool instead of an in-ground one. Concrete pools take the longest to build, clocking in at around three to four weeks of construction, and fiberglass pools typically take about a week. For more complex designs, plan for about six months of planning and construction. You can install a conventional electric- or gas-powered heat ›››

pump to heat your pool. If you’re looking for a more energy-efficient solution, there are a couple other options. The cheapest is a pool blanket. Pool blankets float on top of your pool water and insulate the heat overnight. For more reliable heat, you can install a solar pool heater. Solar pool heaters work similarly to traditional heat pumps, but they collect energy from solar panels (as opposed to gas or electric power sources). If swimming is a low priority for you, and what you really want is to relax in a warm jet-stream, consider building a spa or hot tub instead. Like pools, hot tubs come in a variety of build types. Acrylic hot tubs are the most popular type and are known for their durability and the wide variety of shapes and sizes they come in. Some other types are vinyl liner tubs, also known as soft or portable tubs, which are less expensive, and unicast tubs, where the tub and cabinet are molded as a single piece. Because of their structure, there are limits to the size of unicast tubs. The key to finding the best hot tub for you is the jets. Rotary jets, also known as therapy jets, are good for therapeutic massages. Relaxation jets create a large, gentle flow. Pressure point jets, as the name implies, provide an intense flow to stimulate pressure points. Other features, like sound systems, decorative lighting, and lounge seating, can add to the home spa experience. It’s not all about luxury, either; you can opt for practical features like remote monitoring that ties into your home security and coveralls for longtime storage. The more you run your hot tub, the cleaner it will stay (what a great excuse to take a soak!). You’ll still need to drain the water and perform regular cleanings every three to four months. There are also filters to rinse and clean regularly, and you need to keep the water pH-balanced. With good maintenance habits, your hot tub can last up to 20 years. Whether you want a fancy pool for entertaining family and friends or just a simple hot tub to soak in after a long day at the office, a pool or spa can be a great addition to your outdoor living space. Start planning now and spend the summer in your own backyard pool! Say What?!? Understanding Hearing Loss

By Ashley Anderson

Our senses help us to understand the world around us. One of these, hearing, allows us to interpret sound and language as a means of communication. We listen to music, we talk with family, and we converse at our jobs—without hearing, every aspect of life is affected. As with many things, we tend to take our hearing for granted, only thinking about it when it’s not getting the job done. Most people associate hearing difficulties with old age, but the elderly are not the only age group to experience hearing loss. Approximately 5 percent of the world’s population has disabling hearing loss, with around 7 million who are functionally deaf. Although a large portion of this group is over 65 years old, hearing loss can occur at birth or following a physical trauma at any age. There are three main parts of the ear—the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. Each part plays a vital role in hearing ability. The outer ear is the part that you can see, including the pinna (the exterior ear) and the ear canal, which directs sound toward the middle ear, where your eardrum sits. Your eardrum vibrates and reverberates to the inner ear, where it is transcribed to your brain as sound. Your brain then identifies the meaning of the sound. When any one of these parts of the ear does not function properly, hearing loss can occur. The most commonly known types of hearing loss are conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

Conductive hearing loss is that which occurs in the outer or middle ear. Sensorineural hearing loss is from problems in function of the inner ear. Both types of hearing loss can occur at birth, because of aging, or from a specific cause. Conductive hearing loss is most commonly caused by malformation of the ear or fluid and infection within the ear. Malformations can occur at birth or from physical impact to the ear. Fluid and infection can occur at any time, so it’s important to keep your ears dry and clean. This type of hearing loss can sometimes be treated with surgical correction. Sensorineural hearing loss can occur from exposure to loud noise, head trauma, or disease. Medical management, including a hearing aid or implants, may be required for correction or improvement. If you experience hearing loss suddenly, it may be sensorineural and related to injury. In this case, visit the emergency room immediately for medical care. It is important that you contact your physician promptly if you begin to experience hearing loss. Untreated hearing loss

could be prolonged and become permanent. Start with your family physician, who may suggest that you visit an audiologist. An audiologist is a medical professional who studied the science of hearing and the function of the ear. Audiologists complete a master’s degree with additional certification in audiology or a doctoral degree in audiology. Ask if she belongs to any medical associations, like the American Academy of Audiology, or is board-certified in audiology practice. If you are unsure how to discern a reputable audiologist, your family physician may be able to refer you. Depending on the severity and cause of your hearing loss, it may be correctable or improvable with medical attention. This may include the most traditional option, a hearing aid, which helps to amplify sound. Hearing aids are removable devices that are created to fit and aid your specific hearing needs. In cases where malformation of the structure of the ear impedes hearing, corrective surgery may provide improvement. When inner ear function is damaged, an audiologist may recommend a cochlear implant. This is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the inner ear. It is meant to be a permanent device and can last a lifetime. These types of treatments may be covered by your insurance. Following any diagnosis or correction, regular visits with an audiologist are recommended. She will be able to evaluate your hearing loss, note any improvement or deterioration, and determine the best action. To keep your hearing healthy, protect your ears from damaging impact or loud noise. Wear earplugs at loud events or when doing loud work, and wear a helmet during sports activities. It’s also important to have your hearing regularly checked. You can have this done at your annual physical or whenever you have concerns about your hearing. Your doctor will perform a hearing test, which typically includes signaling when you do or do not hear noise at different decibels. Following evaluation, she will be able to provide you with feedback on your hearing health and recommend any necessary treatment. Don’t miss out on life because you can’t hear what’s going on! If you have concerns about your hearing, check with your doctor right away. Sources for this article included: hearingloss.org, asha.org, and audiology.org. WE

An Inside Look

The Cohen Family Real Estate Team Their Family Serving Yours By Elizabeth French

Buying a home is often the biggest financial investment a person ever makes. A home may also be the place where memories are created for generations. It’s a major decision, and it helps to have someone knowledgeable on your team. The Cohen Family Real Estate Team started out as Alan and Anne Cohen, who would ride their motorcycle on weekends to look at listings. In the 1970s, their love of houses blossomed into the business of helping others find the home of their dreams. Alan and Anne’s only son, Marty Cohen, joined the family business after he graduated from college in 1991. Each member of the Cohen team has his or her own niche within the real estate market, complementing one another’s skill sets. “We have different strengths and weaknesses,” Anne explains. “Alan and Marty are mechanical. I like to do the softer side, the staging. We offer a lot of different areas of expertise.” Having diversity in age and gender has also been a plus. “At first, we had both a man and a woman. Now, with Marty, we have different generations,” Anne notes. “It’s been comfortable. It’s worked for us.” They are supported by only a single administrative assistant, yet they still treat every client on an individual basis. Suzanne Singer, a seller, raves about the team. “They were knowledgeable, responsive, professional—the whole experience was great,” says Suzanne. “I was managing the sale from a distance. The Cohens made the process so easy.” Working with a family of three has its advantages. In addition to many years of expertise in the field, they are always accessible and ready to help each other. “It is comical,” says Marty of their dynamic, “but, between the three of us, we have over 100 years of experience.” To Marty’s chagrin, Alan exclaims, “It’s a family affair!” Their dynamic is playful, open, and honest—perfect for any first-time buyer looking to feel at ease during a stressful time. Another advantage of the Cohen Family Real Estate Team with CBS Homes is their commitment to client satisfaction. “Our goal is to sell you a house you’ll love to come home to,” says Marty. Helping everyone from first-time home buyers to retirees looking at condominiums, the Cohens have served as many as three generations in a single family. “We love to work with the first-time buyers,” Anne says, “because we feel like we have the knowledge and experience they need.” Although experience can prepare a realtor for just about anything, the housing market can still be a difficult gamble. “In our business, you can only work with so many clients and do it well,” Marty explains, stressing his family’s commitment to their quality of

service. Pricing effectively can be the greatest challenge when listing a house on the market because aiming too high Alan and Anne Cohen and their son, Marty or too low can cost the seller significant leverage in the negotiation process. “If you price too high,” Alan describes, “the whole sale can be lost. If it keeps getting shopped more, for 10 days, then 20 days, then 60 to 120 days, the price keeps grinding down. Sometimes, it depends on the urgency of the seller.” Without a trustworthy team to help guide a seller, beautiful homes can sit unclaimed for years because of inappropriate pricing. Once a sale is made, however, the rewards to the job are significant. With the opportunity to refer painters, carpenters, and other skilled tradesmen that homeowners need to find, the Cohens have built relationships with many trustworthy businesses over the course of their careers. The Cohens have noticed a change in trend on the market, which they attribute, in part, to the popularity of things like HGTV. Buyers tend to see more of the potential for change in homes rather than seeing things just as they are. While fixer-uppers are not for everyone, many buyers are looking for opportunities to be creative. “It’s great fun when people walk into a house and really love it, can see themselves in it,” Alan says. “There’s nothing like selling a house! It sure beats selling a toaster.” Between Alan’s sense of humor, Anne’s creativity, and Marty’s savvy, the Cohen Family Real Estate Team is truly remarkable. Client Marc Brennan reflects that he loved working with Marty and his family. “They make a great team with attention to detail. Most importantly, they’re fun.” Whether you are in the market for a condo, a starter home, or a bigger place for your growing family, the Cohens will guide you through the process from start to finish. To reach this dynamic trio, call 402-690-1591. Their office is located at 15950 West Dodge Road, in Omaha. WE

Mutual Funds 101 Where Do You Begin?

By George Morgan

If you are like most Americans with a 401(k), the only investment choice you have is a mutual fund. Mutual funds came into being at the beginning of the twentieth century. In their initial form, they were called trusts. They were available only to the wealthy…and almost all of them went bankrupt in the market crash of 1929. Mutual funds as we know them today came into being with the Investment Act of 1934. There are close to 10,000 mutual funds available to the public, and they hold over $17 trillion in assets, which is about 80 percent of the total value of the American stock market. Why so many funds? It’s all about marketing. Just like there are many brands of toothpaste, which are all basically the same thing, investment companies want you to believe their mutual fund is different and, therefore, better. When investors buy individual stocks, that is a direct form of investing—that is, the investor makes the decision on what to buy. A mutual fund is an indirect form of investment because, when you buy a mutual fund, a professional money manager decides which stocks to buy and sell. There are two basic forms of mutual funds: those that are actively managed and those that are passively managed. The type that most people are familiar with is the actively managed fund, where a money manager buys and sells stocks to improve performance. The alternative is a passively managed index fund, where the fund buys the stocks in an index, such as the S&P 500

or the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and holds them without any attempt to trade them to improve performance. Mutual funds are manufactured, marketed, and managed by an investment company. The process for an actively managed fund begins with the hiring of a professional money manager (or a group of them). The investment company then markets the fund to collect investors’ dollars. They are responsible for marketing the funds, maintaining the accounting and reporting, and paying the fund managers. These activities cost money, and that cost is passed on to the fund’s shareholders, which reduces their investment returns. Next, the fund managers must decide how they will invest the funds’ assets. The industry calls this the “style” of the fund. There are four basic mutual fund styles: growth, value, growth and income, and international. Up until 1979, all mutual funds were actively managed. In 1979,

Jack Bogle, who was the head of Vanguard, set up the first index fund. An index fund is a passively managed fund that buys and holds the stocks contained in a market index in the same proportion that they appear in the index. Once the stocks are placed in the fund, they are not traded. Because there is no highly paid portfolio manager or transaction cost, the fees charged by index funds are significantly lower than those associated with actively managed funds. From a performance perspective, actively managed mutual funds had their glory days in the 1980s and 1990s, when funds such as Fidelity’s Magellan fund consistently provided double-digit returns. However, in today’s electronic markets, the performance of actively managed mutual funds has declined dramatically. In the long run, less than one percent of actively managed mutual funds outperform the market. The reasons for this are, primarily, regulatory requirements and internal regulations. The first issue is that a fund can only invest a small percentage of its assets in any one stock. This means that, as the fund grows, the fund manager must stop investing more in the stocks on the top of her buy list and must invest in other stocks, even if they are of lesser quality. Associated with this is the fact that most funds state that they will be 95 percent invested at all times. Thus, even if a fund manager thinks that it is a poor time to be investing because of deteriorating market conditions, the fund has no alternative but to be invested. By definition, the performance of index funds equals that of the indexes, which will almost always outperform actively managed funds. A major factor in the positive performance record of index funds is their extremely low fees. Unlike actively managed funds, they are not paying for an expensive money manager, and they have no transaction costs. If you are a 401(k) accountholder and are unsure about how to invest your money, an S&P 500 or Dow index fund is a reasonable choice. Your fees are low, you end up with 85 percent of the total market, and your investment is driven by the biggest companies in the world. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing. WE

What to Know Before You Go Pre-Planning: Wills, Funerals, and Trusts

By Linda Barnes

As Ben Franklin famously observed, nothing is certain except death and taxes. Most of us plan to make sure we can pay our taxes each April. Doesn’t it make sense for us also to have a plan in place for our final days? Planning for taxes benefits us, but estate planning and pre-planning funerals benefits our loved ones. Recent statistics show that 55 percent of Americans die without a will, which leaves too many important things in limbo. Instead of your property and personal belongings going to those you designate, the state will oversee the distribution of your property. It is costly and often time-consuming. Worse, only 1 in 5 Americans has made pre-arrangements for their funeral. The truth is that most of us would rather have a root canal without anesthetic than think seriously about our own deaths. Our motivation to do the difficult thing here is our concern for our loved ones and the thought of the burden they will face if we neglect to make plans. What is a good age to make a will? That depends on individual circumstances. Consider that a will can designate a guardian for your minor children, name the person you want to oversee the distribution of your property, and outline your wishes for final arrangements. It should be updated as life circumstances change. Along with a will, you’ll need a durable power of attorney and a healthcare proxy. If you are incapacitated, these people will make

financial and medical decisions for you. Don’t you want to choose the people making these decisions? An advance directive (living will) states your wishes for end-of-life care. Trusts are another component of estate planning. Trusts differ from wills in a couple of important ways. A will only becomes effective after your death. It outlines how your property is to be distributed. With a trust, a person or company (the trustee) holds title to property for you. During your life, you are the beneficiary of the trust and receive income from it. After your death, a secondary beneficiary receives whatever remains in the trust. A will becomes public record after your death, and a probate court oversees the proper execution of its terms. A trust avoids probate, and the details remain private as your property is transferred to your beneficiaries. A combination of a will and a trust is often used in estate planning. An attorney or financial planner can explain the

costs and benefits of a trust in detail. Involve children or others in your planning. Sometimes, final wishes are only discovered later, after loved ones have struggled through their grief to make arrangements. Tell those close to you where you keep important documents. Provide all the pertinent information, such as the location of your will and the key to your bank box, the names of your attorney and financial planner, and your chosen funeral home. Funeral homes are happy to work with you on pre-arrangements, whether or not you choose to pay in advance. If you feel confident about a particular licensed mortuary because you or friends have had dealings with them, that is great. If not, experts suggest visiting more than one before deciding. If you really don’t know any in the area, contact your state’s funeral directors association for a list of its members. Large cost differences can occur between facilities, so it is wise to compare prices for basic services. Federal law requires that these prices be made available. As one wag remarked, it’s smart to “shop before you drop.” When you’ve settled on a mortuary, then you can delve into the details of the kind of service you’d like to have. Many decisions will have to be made, and you’re the most qualified person to make them. Cremation versus embalming is a big decision that should rest entirely on the deceased’s personal preference—another good reason to pre-plan! A second important decision is whether to pre-pay for your final arrangements. Consider the pros and cons carefully, as you will be signing a contractual agreement. You can pay up front, buy insurance with the funeral home named as beneficiary, or have a trust agreement with the funeral home. Ask if the cost is guaranteed and whether you can cancel or transfer to another funeral home, if necessary. What happens if they change owners or close their doors? What happens if you move out of state? These are vital questions, and a reputable funeral home will be ready with the answers. Take advantage of professionals such as attorneys, financial planners, and funeral home directors for their expert advice. Do it soon! Then you can relax, knowing that solid plans are in place. Allergies and Asthma Learn to Manage Your Symptoms

By Connie Keck

Allergies and asthma are becoming more common all the time; they affect millions of adults and children in the United States. Researchers have estimated that up to 15 million people have food allergies, including 5.9 percent of children under age 18. Asthma and allergies often coexist, and they can make you miserable. Understanding their similarities and differences can help you learn to manage or even avoid symptoms. Our immune systems are designed to protect us from potential harm. Allergies occur when the immune system initiates an immune response against a substance that you might not think of as a threat—things like food, pollen, pet dander, dust, bug bites, or medications. In addition to the very common symptoms of a runny nose and itchy, watery eyes, allergies can manifest as hives or rashes, dermatitis, eczema, or conjunctivitis. Serious allergies can cause the potentially life-threatening condition known as anaphylaxis. This can include acute symptoms like swelling of the throat, trouble breathing, low blood pressure, or even cardiac arrest. The most common food allergies among children are caused by peanuts, milk, soy beans, tree nuts, eggs, and wheat. Many children outgrow their allergies to food; some do not. Allergic adults typically react to citrus foods, nuts, fish, peanuts, shellfish, and wheat. Avoidance of the offending food is the best line of defense. Spring can be a difficult time of year for people who have

allergies or asthma. Flowers and trees are in full bloom, coating the great outdoors with pollen. Pollen counts generally rise in the morning, peak around noon, and decrease from there. Limiting your time outside during those times or on days with particularly high pollen counts can lessen your suffering. If you’re outside for a while, washing your hands and face and changing your clothes when you come in can limit the amount of pollen inside your home. Triggers for allergic reactions can usually be avoided or managed. Determining the cause of an allergic reaction is key. Once you have determined the cause, you can better determine how to avoid the symptoms. There are two types of skin tests for allergies. A prick test pricks the surface of the skin with a tiny amount of allergen. An intradermal test injects the allergen through a very fine needle under the first few layers of skin. The allergist can then visually identify the allergens that induced a histamine reaction because those spots will be inflamed. Food allergies can be identified with skin tests, blood tests, oral food challenges, and trial elimination diets.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows your airways, impairing breathing. Asthma cannot be cured, but it can be managed. Asthma may cause the linings of your airways to swell and the muscles around them to tighten. Asthma can make breathing uncomfortable and difficult. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. In some cases, asthma symptoms subside without intervention or medication. When the swelling and tightness are severe and breathing becomes nearly impossible, it is known as an asthma attack or a flare-up. An asthma attack can happen with any type of asthma. Over time, the effects of uncontrolled asthma, such as increased inflammation and asthma attacks, lead to permanent damage to the lining of your airways. It’s important to work with your doctor to control your asthma. Allergies and asthma often occur together, and they’re often triggered by the same substances, like pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. In some people, skin or food allergies can cause asthma symptoms. This is called allergic asthma or allergyinduced asthma. However, some people with asthma do not have allergies. Non-allergic asthma can be triggered by stress, medication, air temperature, smoke, and infections of the airway. Asthma symptoms may also be triggered by exercise, infections, or related conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). After asthma has been triggered, the airways in the lungs react by constricting. Asthma may also produce mucus, which further narrows the airways. The frequency of symptoms can vary widely, from once a week to several times a day, and the intensity also varies. If your asthma is severe, your doctor may recommend that you visit an allergist or a pulmonary specialist who is specially trained to treat asthma. While asthma is not curable, the condition is manageable. Medications are often prescribed to help manage asthma flare-ups. Rescue inhalers, along with breathing tests, may be prescribed by your doctor. By proactively managing the symptoms of asthma flare-ups, most people with asthma can live normal lives without many interruptions. If allergies or asthma are keeping you from enjoying the season, consult your doctor. The right treatment could be just around the corner. Make a Splash This Summer Vehicles to Consider on the Water By Brennan Hallock

Winter weather can make the outdoors a harsh, uninviting place. On many evenings, a good book or TV show is preferable to braving the cold. As summer approaches, though, the rising temperatures and longer days begin to coax us out of our homes and into the sun. Summer weather brings a whole array of fun outdoor recreation to fill every minute of our free time. Water sports is one pastime that most of us aren’t able to enjoy during the winter, so summer is the time to push off from the shore and explore the many lakes and rivers that surround us. Whether you love relaxing with a fishing pole and a beer, pulling water skiers behind a speedboat, or racing through the water on a jet ski, water sports have something for almost everyone. Boats and other water sport vehicles are incredibly versatile machines, but some are definitely better designed for certain activities. If you’re thinking about purchasing a boat or jet ski, you should carefully consider what water activities you would like to do. Here are some important questions to ask yourself before making your purchase: First, how much space do you think you’ll need? Consider how many people and how much equipment you intend to regularly carry when you’re out on the water. This will affect the size of boat you should buy.

Second, where do you plan to use your vehicle? This will impact the size and type of boat you should buy. If you’re only going to use it on open waters and large lakes, you can potentially get a much larger and more powerful boat. If you would like to be able to take it on small lakes and rivers, you’ll need something smaller. Third, what is your budget? Buying a water vehicle is similar to buying a land vehicle: You can buy it with just the basics, or you can add all the extras. You should understand all of these potential expenses beforehand. There are a lot of great water vehicles on the market. Here are the details on a few good choices: If you are looking for a versatile fishing and recreation boat, the Tracker Pro Guide V-175 SC may be a good fit for your needs. This aluminum boat seats six people and is one of the most popular and versatile models of the trusted Tracker brand. Whether you are fishing for perch or pulling a wakeboarder, this boat is a wonderful choice. At 17 feet, 7 inches, this boat is capable of trolling on small

rivers and lakes as well as speeding over open water. It sells for around $24,000. The Sun Tracker Bass Buggy 16 DLX was named by Boats.com as one of the top boats of 2017 under $20,000— and the 2018 model comes in well under that, at around $15,000. This pontoon boat is excellent for taking groups out fishing or just relaxing. It is powered by a Torqeedo electric outboard motor, making it an ideal fishing boat. The electric motor is quiet and does not scare away the fish, and it can be used on small or private lakes that do not allow gas outboard motors. Its multiple fold-down seats make it perfect for groups. Speed and versatility are two of the strongest attributes of the Bass Cat Lynx. Listed by Boating Magazine as one of the top boats of 2018, the Bass Cat Lynx was able to exceed 75 mph with a fishing crew and gear. It is also described as simply fun to drive, as it has smooth handling while it skims over the water, even at high speeds. When not speeding across the water, it

works well as a fishing boat. Its one drawback is its hefty price tag of nearly $90,000. If you like to have fun on the water but aren’t interested in a boat, you might consider a jet ski. One highly rated jet ski to look into is the Kawasaki Jet Ski SX-R (approximately $10,000). This is a fun, quick, and agile machine. It is a stand-up jet ski, which means it will be more of a workout than most jet skis, but that also adds to its quick handling and overall fun. This powerful machine has a top speed of 60 mph, which is faster than most people will go on a normal lake. If you are hoping for more recreation and fun in the water this summer, a new boat or jet ski will definitely supply that. Start making plans this spring for your summer vacation. The Good Life

Too Busy to Go Back to School? Think Again. Continued Education for Everyone By Leslie Byrne

If you think that everyone you know is going back to school, you may be right. Between online courses, accelerated programs, and certificate programs, people are lining up for continued education, and they’re doing it in ways that work for them and their families. The reasons that people want to continue their education haven’t changed: career advancement, higher income potential, career change, or completion of a degree program that was started but not finished. Because of changes to the structure of continued education, finding the time and money to go back to school has gotten a little easier. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is the most popular degree for adults going back to school. Finance, accounting, and computer science are also popular fields. The most lucrative graduate degree program is biomedical engineering, followed by computer science and physics. A master’s degree in finance, management, math, or statistics will also tend to pay off financially. Even if what you want to study isn’t likely to land you a lucrative paycheck, don’t let that stop you from signing up for courses. Could specific courses further your career? For example, if you lack management experience, taking a few project management courses may be all that you need to develop the skills to take on projects at work, which could lead to a promotion. You may find that taking non-credit courses or completing an online certification program is the boost that your career needs. Let’s take a look at some of the ways to fit continued education into your life. On-campus classes are usually offered during the day, though some schools offer evening and weekend classes. You’ll find that the classroom is a familiar learning environment. You’ll have immediate access to the instructor and the other students, so you can get instant feedback. On the other hand, you’ll have to accept set class times, parking hassles, and, often, more expensive tuition. Online course work has really opened the door to going back to school or finishing a degree program. Make sure the program you’re looking at is accredited. Start with an online search, speak with representatives from the program or school, and read student reviews. The main benefit of online courses is obvious: flexibility. You can do your classwork anytime, anywhere. This means that you can work around your other responsibilities, and you can access programs at distant schools without having to travel. Of course, online classes are not for everyone. They require selfdiscipline and the ability to navigate a program mostly without help. You will still have access to instructors and students, but interaction will be limited. The purpose of an accelerated program is to finish courses as quickly as possible. They are popular in

60

April 2018

fields like nursing, where people who are already working in the field want to gain more skills and certifications. Both undergraduate and graduate accelerated programs are available and may entail a blend of campus classes and online courses that can include recorded lectures and discussion forums. The main advantage of an accelerated program is that you cover the same amount of material as a traditional class but in a shorter amount of time. This is also the program’s main drawback—students in an accelerated degree program will find themselves with a full schedule and much less free time than students in a traditional program. If you’re looking to move up in the field you’re already in, you might not need another degree. For a competitive edge in your career, consider an online certificate program. These programs are generally cost-effective, though they can be just as challenging as courses in a degree program. They’re usually subject-specific and can often help students meet licensing requirements. They’re also a great way to build skills in new areas like digital and social media marketing—subjects that didn’t exist when many adults were undergraduates. Many community colleges offer affordable online and on-campus non-credit courses. These are a great way to follow a passion or learn a new skill. They can also be an opportunity to dabble in a new career field before taking on the financial and time commitment of going back to school full-time. If the cost of continued education is a concern, work with the school to learn what financial aid and scholarships are available. Also, check to see if your employer offers a tuition reimbursement program as a part of your benefits package. Many employers have added tuition reimbursement to their suite of benefits to attract and keep talent. Talk it through carefully with your company to make sure you don’t have trouble getting reimbursed. The interest in continued education for adults over 50 is growing. Take a look at what continued education could do for you and your career. It’s never too late to learn something new! Great Escapes

Visit London A Brit’s Suggestions By Jackie Williams

With all of the talk surrounding the royal wedding coming up this year, London is on the lists of many travelers. Most people are familiar with the must-see landmarks: the Tower of London, the (Coca-Cola) London Eye, Big Ben, and Buckingham Palace, to name a few. What are some other things to see and do, especially with travelers who are visiting for their second or third time? For an inside look, I asked my British friend, Gillian, what she recommends. I think her suggestions are golden, and I’m happy to share them with you. Windsor Castle “A good alternative to Buckingham Palace is Windsor Castle. Windsor is a very picturesque village, with the Thames running through it and some good restaurants. Plus, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are getting married there this summer.” Visit the oldest and largest occupied castle on the planet, where each room is part of history. You can make sure to catch the changing of the guard ceremony (check out changing-guard.com for the schedule). Be aware that photography is encouraged outside the castle but is not allowed inside. In fact, cell phones need to be turned off inside the castle. Kew Gardens “These are the royal botanical gardens in southwest London. Kew Gardens is a world heritage site and has the largest collection of plants in the world.”

The Royal Botanical Gardens are just 30 minutes from London. There are cafes, restaurants, and shops throughout, and you can even enjoy your afternoon tea here. Free guided walking tours to learn about the highlights and history of the gardens make the visit more enjoyable. The Treetop Walkway (just what it sounds like) and The Hive (an immersive experience that simulates a real beehive) are also pretty cool. If you need a rest from walking, buy a ticket for the Kew Explorer so you can sit back and enjoy your 40-minute tour by land train. If you visit on or after May 5th, you can check out The Temperate House, which is the world’s largest Victorian glasshouse. (It has been closed for the past five years and will reopen on May 5th.) If you are a fan of BBC cooking shows, you might recognize the Kitchen Garden. It was featured on the BBC series “Kew on a Plate.” Covent Garden “Covent Garden is a fashionable spot for local trendy markets. ›››

It’s surrounded by the best places to eat.” Foodie’s paradise + shopping + street performances + nearby museums = a fantastic time. Hotels in this area are some of the most luxurious. With over 200 stores in Covent Garden, you can wander around the cobblestone streets for hours. Sky Garden “There is a place on Fenchurch Street, in London, called the Sky Garden. It has the best views of London. It’s in a skyscraper. It’s free to get in, but you have to book.” The Sky Garden is home to three stories of landscaped public gardens, observation decks, and an open-air terrace. It’s a great meeting place and has restaurants, lounges, and bars, in addition to the 360-degree open views of London. I love Gillian’s recommendations—a little bit of history, culture, shopping, and eating makes for a well-rounded trip. One very British thing I always want to do is enjoy high tea. I love the setting and atmosphere centered around having tea, scones with clotted cream, and little sandwiches and treats. “High tea is supposed to be around 3:00 or 4:00 p.m.,” Gillian tells me. “It was a stopgap between lunch and dinner. Nowadays, people eat dinner earlier, so high tea is viewed more as a treat.” Has the traditional tea lost its popularity? Far from it! The internet is bursting with articles about who has the best high tea, the newest, the trendiest, the most traditional—you name it. Join the tradition during the UK’s National Afternoon Tea Week in August. London offers just about any type of accommodation you could want. I recommend staying near public transportation and using an Oyster Card (prepaid transit card) to get around. If you stay in the Covent Garden area, you can walk everywhere easily. Spring and summer are great times to visit London—the weather will be much nicer. It would be a great memory to experience the festivities surrounding the royal wedding, but keep in mind that London will be filled with tourists this summer for just that reason. Talk to your travel agent now to ensure that you stay where you want to stay, do what you want to do, and get tickets to what you want to see while you’re on vacation in London. Enterprising Ideas

A Team-Based Approach to Breast Cancer Janet Grange, MD

By Robyn V. Powell

Approximately one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. In the United States, 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed this year, along with 63,960 new cases of noninvasive (in-situ) breast cancer. Thanks to early detection and significant improvements in treatment, millions of women are surviving the disease. Partnering with an assembled team of experts who are committed to seeing you through your journey can greatly affect your experience and your outcome. In the face of a frightening diagnosis, however, doing the legwork of finding the right specialists and making treatment decisions can be overwhelming. Not to worry: Dr. Janet Grange can help. Dr. Grange specializes in the treatment of breast cancer. As a proponent of the team approach, Dr. Grange says, “Breast cancer management has become a lot more complicated. It used to be pretty simple: get your mammogram, do your self-exam, and everyone gets the same treatment, with only a couple of options.” These days, women are making more individualized choices, and the best treatments are based on each patient’s particular cancer. It’s good to have more information, Dr. Grange notes, but it can make women uncertain as to whether they’re making the right decisions. “A patient’s need for information and coordination and the need for someone to navigate that labyrinth is greater than ever,” she explains. “Walking someone through that complicated decision-making is so important. Women want to have a team assembled for them that they can trust. I’m so fortunate to work with a wonderful group of specialists, including oncologists and radiologists, who operate together as a team. By nature, cancer is a team sport. As a patient, you want to be connected to a network.” Dr. Grange’s passion to battle this disease is very personal. “I first met this disease when my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 25. I saw it from the vantage point of the person struggling with the disease. As a result, I am very patient when it comes to taking the time to listen to patients’ concerns,” she says. “It’s been over 30 years, but I still draw upon my sister’s experience to fuel me. My experience with my sister shaped my life and my decision to become a surgeon. I approach this from an optimistic place. My sister was as much a victim of the circumstances of the times as she was of the disease itself. Women were not encouraged to be proactive in their breast health, and doctors didn’t have the tools to diagnose and treat early. At the end of the day, I want to help women have a better outcome than my sister.”

66

April 2018

Dr. Grange encourages her patients to look at their cancer journey as a source of strength. Watching women face the disease head on and say, “You’re not winning!” has brought the most special rewards. “I follow my patients, so I get to see the full circle,” she says. “I get to witness how being given a second chance can change a woman’s life.” Dr. Grange believes that listening to patients is an important part of treatment. “I’ve designed a practice where I can spend the amount of time I think it takes,” she says. “I spend a lot of time explaining things to my patients so they can understand their disease and make informed choices.” Not every surgeon would credit motherhood with preparing her for her role, but Dr. Grange says being a mom before attending medical school made all the difference. “Being a surgeon is like being a high-tech mother. As a mother, you learn to be a team player, which is uniquely suited to what I do. As a mother, you are there for your children. My relationships with my patients are the same. There are a lot of buffers between patients and doctors, but I strive to make myself available to my patients.” Dr. Grange believes that cancer will eventually be eradicated. “It’s just a matter of time. The pace of our understanding is exponential. We’re making headway every day, and it’s exciting to be a part of the journey toward finding a cure.” Her message to women is to be proactive. “Never has it been easier to access information about what you may be experiencing. If your symptoms concern you, do not hesitate or put off your concerns. Find the whole care team that will treat you with the expertise and compassion you deserve. It’s your life. Whatever it takes.” Dr. Janet Grange’s office is located in Suite 329 of the Midlands Two Professional Center, next to Midlands Hospital, which is near 84th Street and Highway 370 in Papillion. The Green Thumb

Preparing for a New Vegetable Garden A Beginner’s Guide

By Sharon Knierim

Early April is an exciting time for midwestern gardeners. Every aspect of a new garden is fresh and appealing. We feel such hope as we dig and prepare and determine what to plant. New seed packets offer the promise of bumper crops, homegrown nutrition, and variety. For those of us who relish and take pride in growing our own food, this is the time of new awakenings. Birds that we have not seen for months have returned to grace our yards once again. The color green (surely, every gardener’s favorite hue) is everywhere. Even the air we breathe smells wonderful. No matter how excited we feel, it’s important not to jump in too soon. Before anything can be planted, the soil requires careful preparation. Take a look around the yard after the snow melts, and you may be surprised at what is left behind! This is the time to remove any trash that has lingered in the garden area during winter. This is also the time to dig the soil, turning it over and removing any and all weeds or unwanted grasses. However, DO NOT perform this task if the soil is still damp and forms a ball when handled. Doing so will give you nothing but clods of dirt all summer long and will create all kinds of trouble throughout the growing season. These

clods are not popular with seeds or seedlings! Seeds have great difficulty germinating if trapped under a clod of dirt, and the roots of seedlings and larger plants will be hindered by these large clumps of soil. Rake the soil with a sturdy rake, and walk lightly on the top of the soil as you apply an organic fertilizer. If you’re starting a new garden, you need to find a good spot. For success, choose a mostly sunny location. When you’re sketching out the size of your garden, take into consideration which crops you want to plant and how much space they’ll need to avoid overcrowding. Favorites to be planted in early spring include lettuce varieties,

onions, radishes, and peas. These crops have the ability to tolerate extremely cool weather and can even survive a light snowfall. Some brave gardeners also plant their carrots at this time of year; more prudent growers wait until all danger of frost has passed. All row crops should be planted at least one foot apart so that they receive adequate space to grow and thrive. To maneuver comfortably through the garden, 18-inch spacing is best for utilizing the tiller between rows. Around the 100th day of the year (that is, April 10th), potatoes can be planted. Seed potatoes should be prepared ahead of their planting. Several days before you plan to get the potatoes in the ground, cut each potato into chunks—each chunk should have at least one eye (sprout) protruding from its peel. Allow the cut potatoes to heal for a few days before adding them to the garden. It is popular today to plant potatoes in pots (and they do make a lovely decorative plant), but serious potato eaters will want to plant them directly in the soil in the ground. We are all hungry for our homegrown tomatoes. The shortness of their peak season probably makes them even more popular. Do not be fooled into planting tomatoes too early in the spring! Premature planting of tomatoes often results in the need to replant. Planting in late spring or very early summer will garner the best crop. Zucchini and squash plants can be started in the garden at the same time as tomatoes. Both tomatoes and zucchini should be planted 18 inches apart. Remember, those little tiny babies will grow and expand. Late spring is the time for planting green beans, spinach, and, of course, those yummy beets. Whether you are planting green beans or purple (which turn to traditional green while cooking), wise gardeners wait until the lilacs are blooming to plant their beans. Once everything is planted, maintenance of the garden is important. Be vigilant about slugs and other raiders. Remain watchful of molds and diseases that can affect plants, and don’t forget to weed when necessary. Successful plants do not want to compete with weeds and interloping grasses. Watering is also important—with some crops, even the time of day for watering is important. Be sure to water well. I hope you have a wonderful time in the garden this season! Have a fruitful experience. Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. For the Love of Horses Enjoy the Benefits of Equestrianism By Elizabeth French

Carrying humans and their belongings for over 5,000 years, horses are woven throughout history in battles, travel, and transport. Before there were airplanes, cars, and other manmade modes of transportation, horses were necessary and reliable partners. Now, they continue to support humanity by teaching responsibility and healing the emotionally wounded, as well as competing at an Olympic level. Equestrianism today can be broken up into a plethora of different genres, but the events included in Olympic competition include dressage, eventing, and show jumping. Dressage is a graceful art, showing the connection between horse and rider in its seamless movements, which are predetermined series or “tests.” Show jumping, on the other hand, is for rigorous riders and requires a keen sense of timing to jump cleanly through each set of obstacles within a given timeframe. Eventing combines the two sports—riders compete in racing, jumping, dressage, and cross-country (open terrain) riding in a single competition, jumping over fences and even wide ditches. If you are curious about the sport, there are a multitude of ways to dive into horseback riding. Camps all over the country are a great way to start exposing younger children (7 years and older, depending on size) to horses and what it takes to maintain a healthy animal. Covering everything from safety to grooming and feeding, horse camp is a fantastic way to see if horse life is right for your child. In addition to riding techniques and experience with the horses themselves, camp will teach your child the fundamental responsibilities of caring for an animal as well as how to clean tack, sweep the stable, and muck out stalls. Too old for camp? Consider taking private lessons with a reputable instructor in your area. Trainers with their own barns will have horses on hand that are accustomed to beginning riders. Make sure to do some research beforehand to ensure the trainer you have chosen is right for you. If your trainer is associated with any national organizations, you are most likely in good hands. The Arabian is currently the most popular breed in the world. According to wideopenpets.com, it is “thought to be one of the oldest breeds and is known for its spirit and endurance.” Arabians can be used in many types of riding, including Western and saddle seat, as well as dressage. The Quarter Horse, coming in as a close second, is the most popular breed in the United States for both pleasure riding and competition. Capable of running fast for short distances, these reliable creatures are ideal for Western events such as barrel racing and roping, but they can easily be trained for racing or dressage, as well. The Tennessee Walker is another popular breed. It was the steed of choice for Civil War generals because its “running walk” made it comfortable to ride for long distances.

As with training any animal, consistency is key, so it is essential that someone works with or exercises a horse at least four to five days per week (or more, if the horse is young or is a high-strung breed such as Thoroughbred, Arabian, or Clydesdale). While excess energy can be fantastic on the racetrack, it can be tough to harness in a dressage arena if it is not controlled properly. Trainers are excellent at helping horses work through behavioral issues like bucking or having trouble standing at the mounting block. A barn manager or trainer can provide techniques and expertise to help manage any unwanted behavior. A person’s life changes when horses become a part of it. The mental benefits of learning equine activities, tests, movements, and safety are harnessed by many professional organizations that use horses to help people who have experienced trauma. Recent studies have shown that simply being around horses can lower a person’s blood pressure and stress level. Grooming, tacking, and spending time with these gentle giants can be a thoroughly meditative experience and can definitely improve your mood. According to a study at Michigan State University, “early indicators are that there is an improvement in Mood Inventory Scores of teenage girls after 15 minutes of quiet interaction with a horse. There is no reason to believe that the same would not be true in adults.” If you would like to get involved in horse life, start small. Volunteer at a stable or take lessons once a week. Get to know some horses and other horse lovers. The physical and emotional benefits are endless—after all, horse lovers are “stable” people! Positive Perspective

Your Hot Button Of Joy Finding Our Way Back to a Better Feeling Place What makes you happy, I mean REALLY happy? I’m not talking about the things that happen in your life that bring a little smile to your face. I’m talking about experiences that when they are happening, you feel so connected, so in touch with who you are, and so exhilarated that you can’t get enough of it. It’s the kind of experience that when you remember the event, you find yourself laughing out loud over and over again. “At the height of laughter, the universe is flung into a kaleidoscope of new possibilities.” —Jean Houston Everyone has a specific “hot button of joy” that they can always rely on to bring them back to their place of connectedness. It’s important to discover/rediscover this part of ourselves so that we can always find our way back to a better feeling place. For me, it’s easy. My hot button of joy is music. “Music is an outburst of the soul.” —Frederick Deliu Now, I am a child of the ’70s. Some of you may remember those days. Some of you may not, either because you were just a babe in the woods back then, not yet born—or you had way too much fun during that particular decade! Music was my mentor, my solace, and my friend. I could have had a horrible day, but I would

come home and put on a rock ’n’ roll album, and it was as if all of the negative stuff went away. “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” —Berthold Auerbach The great thing about discovering/rediscovering your hot button of joy is that once you get it, no one can take it away from you. You may forget it for a while. You may choose to ignore it. But remember—it is always there, waiting for you to come back to it. “The only joy in the world is to begin.”—Cesare Pavese I’ve made the decision to rediscover my hot button of joy. Last weekend, I turned up my surround sound system louder than it had ever been before. Oh my, how much fun I had! “If you’re looking for youth, you’re looking for longevity, just take a dose of rock ‘n’ roll. It keeps you going. Just like the caffeine in your coffee. Rock ‘n’ roll is good for the soul, for the well-being, for the psyche, for your everything. I love it. I can’t even picture being without rock ‘n’ roll.” —Hank Ballard So, what’s your hot button of joy?
