How It All Began…Our Story Hello, all! I hope your summers are going fabulously. Last month, I told all of you about my marriage plans. I will be getting married on August 25th. Due to print deadlines, I will not be able to share the details of the wedding until the October issue. This issue and next, I would like to tell our story and introduce you to the man who I will soon call my husband. As I said last month, I have known my partner for almost seven years. We met on Match.com. Yes, I went down that path! I hadn’t dated since I was 18, and I worked with all women. How in the world was I going to find a date? My niece, Kristina, had met the man she eventually married on Match. It was a fascinating experience! I was open to meeting men in person. I very quickly learned that texting, even phone conversations, didn’t give you a true picture of who the men were. I went on lots of “meet and greets,” as I called them. Nothing clicked until five months into it, when I met him. The chemistry was instant between the two of us. My partner is a 20-year Navy veteran. Ever since I was a child, I have considered myself a patriot. From him, I have gained a much deeper understanding of the huge sacrifices that our service men and women make in order to protect our country. Years ago, another veteran explained to me that military people “live by a strict code of honor,” unlike we civilians do. I admit, I really didn’t know what that meant back then. I do now. My partner explains it this way: “Honor, courage, and commitment.” My partner is a gentleman. He opens doors for me…and for everyone else, as well. He offers me assistance with my jacket. He says ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ He listens and is very respectful to me and others in his life. He lives by the Golden Rule. My partner is romantic…very much so! He holds my hand, he has a very soft heart—which has taught me to soften mine. He is very smart. We have had conversations about everything from black holes to boxing. (He was a boxer in his early days in the Navy. Twelve bouts, undefeated.) We talk all the time—in the morning, before our day starts, and then throughout the night. The word that comes to my mind that best describes him is chivalrous. According to Merriam-Webster, chivalrous means marked by honor, generosity, and courtesy. That is him! I have never met anyone like him. I’ll continue this next month! P.S. I can’t leave without wishing my beautiful granddaughter, McKenna, a happy birthday. Love you!

Hello, Sunshine! Yellow is for Everyone By Holly Bell
We all love sunshine, but you don’t need the sun to shine for YOU to shine! Hop on the hot new color trend: yellow. We have not seen this color in fashion since the ’70s, so it is unabashedly fresh, and designers everywhere are featuring this sunny color. Have you always thought you couldn’t really wear yellow? Think again—this year, every shade of the cheery color is out there! Gold is one of the most popular Pantone hues of this sunshiny tint, but you can also choose gentle Pastel Yellow, subtle Lemon Verbena, or sultry Turmeric, along with smooth Buttercup, classic Sunshine, or bold Saffron. It’s true that not every shade of yellow works with every skin tone, but one of these options is likely to work for you! Yellow is a terrific unisex color and a pleasure to have back in style. Guys can benefit by spreading a little sunshine, too. Maybe it’s time to add yellow to your special man’s polo shirt collection. Yellow can be an attention-getting head turner, or it can be softened down to almost a neutral. It looks most summery when worn with white, off-white, or beige. It is also a stunner worn with blues of any hue. It’s a simple mood lifter! It’s harder to feel down when you are sporting such a happy color. If you’re still hesitant about this uplifting hue, try starting with accessories. How about yellow shoes? Whether they’re pumps, sandals, or tennis shoes, yellow shoes are super wearable this summer. Pair them with a sundress, jeans, or white pants, and you have a style statement. A handbag is another easy way to incorporate yellow in your wardrobe this summer. Cross-body
6

bags are especially popular, and they look so modern and stylish in yellow. When choosing such a statement color, I think it is best to keep the styling simple and let the color do the talking. A great addition to any summer wardrobe would be a yellow cardigan. We all need a little shoulder cover in those chilly restaurants or on rainy days. You will find you are grabbing that yellow cardigan almost every time! Another bonus about yellow is that it transitions perfectly into a fall vibe. When worn with charcoal, browns, dark blues, or black, it is so easy to work into your fall transition wardrobe. It would layer perfectly under a sweater or blazer. Designers plan to move forward with the yellow concept through fall with the marigold tones. The fall runways were showing faux fur coats, jackets, and rain attire in this color. The Pantone Institute predicts that the hot trend colors will continue this fall with bright and vivid tones for everyone. Other popular colors that will work beautifully into your autumn wardrobe will be Dark Cheddar or Marigold, Chili Pepper, Galaxy Blue, and Eden (a rich, dark green). If yellow is just absolutely not to your taste, you still have beautiful colors to enjoy this summer. Another standout for the season is Powdery Ballet Pink. This is such a beautiful, soft color that it can almost be a neutral and can definitely work for men, too. Pink warms up your complexion and shows off a little summer tan beautifully. Hot Pink is also a great summer color. There are many variations in this. I find that the hot pink that has an orange undertone pairs best with light complexions, while the hot pink with the blue undertone is best on people with darker skin tones. One of the easiest ways to make a fashion statement is with color. Here are my favorite ways: First, wear one color from head to toe. Always a head-turner, the bold one-color statement is a no-brainer. Second, base your outfit on a single color but vary the hues for a monochromatic statement. An example would be a sky blue top, a royal blue skirt, and a navy shoe. This always creates an elegant look. Third, try a highcontrast color vibe that creates drama. A good example, of course, is black and white, but many other color combinations can bring the same excitement to your outfit. Classy and classic, the high-contrast color statement is always chic and in style. When you’re basing your wardrobe around color, it’s smart to arrange your closet the same way. Organize your clothing according to color instead of item type. When you do this, you’ll be surprised at the new combinations and outfits you’ll discover! Get started on a more colorful life this summer, and keep it going into fall. Hello, sunshine! Prepare a marinade by mixing 1/2 cup of red wine, 1 minced onion, 1 clove of minced garlic, 1 Tablespoon of chopped fresh mint, 1 Tablespoon of chopped fresh rosemary, and 1 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Place the cubed lamb in a bag or bowl along with the marinade and 12 large whole mushrooms. Refrigerate for 4–6 hours. Thread the lamb cubes onto soaked skewers, alternating with the mushrooms, large chunks of onion and peppers, whole cherry tomatoes, and parboiled quartered potatoes. Grill and cook until medium rare—brush with marinade as often as you like. Fresh Garden Salsa Cut up 4 ripe tomatoes (or use canned). Combine with 1 medium onion (chopped), 2 teaspoons of fresh lime juice, 1 cup of fresh corn kernels, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix by hand or lightly pulse in a food processor. Add 1/2 cup of fresh cilantro and let sit for 30–60 minutes. Serve with chips or on seafood or chicken. Sprinkle the meat mixture over the top, along with grated cheese and chopped green onion. Bake at 325 degrees for 10–15 minutes. in a heavy stockpot and add 1 cup of sugar, 2 Tablespoons of fresh lime or lemon juice, 1 Tablespoon of fresh minced ginger, 1 teaspoon of cumin, 1 teaspoon of salt, a pinch of cloves or allspice, and 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon. Add 1 Tablespoon of chopped onion, if you like, and mix well. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring often—skim off foam, if necessary. Reduce the temperature to low and cook for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Pour the mixture into 2 or 3 small sterilized canning jars, tighten the lids, and turn the jars over to seal (you will hear a pop). Refrigerate. This jam is especially good on biscuits, toasted baguettes, grilled fish, chicken, and pork. Garden Zucchini Bread In a bowl, whisk together 3 cups of flour, 4 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1/2 teaspoon of ginger. In another bowl, mix 2 cups of sugar with 3/4 cup of vegetable oil, 4 eggs, and 1 teaspoon of lemon peel. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Stir in 2 cups of shredded zucchini and 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts. Pour into 2 greased and floured loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes, until a toothpick tests clean. Cool for 20 minutes before removing from the pan. Game’s On Slow Cooker Meatballs Mix 1 pound of ground chuck with 1 egg, 2 Tablespoons of milk, 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs, and 3 Tablespoons of minced onion. Roll the mixture into small balls. Bake on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Place the baked meatballs in a slow cooker. Blend together 1 can of jellied cranberry sauce, 3/4 cup of chili sauce, and 1 Tablespoon of brown sugar. Pour the sauce over the meatballs. Cook on low for 3–4 hours.

Peas and New Potatoes Scrub a bunch (12–15) of new baby potatoes and cut each one in half. Boil for 8 minutes in salted water, adding 1 cup of fresh or frozen peas during the last 3 or 4 minutes of cooking. Drain and set aside. In the same pan, melt 2 Tablespoons of butter. Add a few bits of diced onion and cook for 3 or 4 minutes. Sprinkle in 2 Tablespoons of flour and some salt and pepper. Slowly add 2 cups of milk and stir until thick and creamy. Add the drained vegetables. Garnish with a few chopped chives. Chicken Tacos Put 6 boneless chicken thighs into a slow cooker. Add 1 cup of chicken broth, 1 cup of salsa, and 2 Tablespoons of taco seasoning. Cook on high for 3–4 hours. Shred the chicken and serve with tortillas, cheese, sour cream, and fresh tomatoes. To prepare in an Instant Pot, cook all ingredients together for 15 minutes on the meat setting, with quick release. Shred the chicken and serve with tortillas and other toppings. Oatmeal Banana Cookies Mix together 3 cups of quick-cooking oatmeal, 3 cups of flour, 1 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 and 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of cinnamon. In another bowl, mix together 1 and 1/2 cups of butter, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and 2 cups of mashed bananas (3 or 4 bananas). Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet, adding 1/2 cup of chopped nuts and a 12-ounce bag of chocolate chips. Drop by Tablespoons on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. WE

Telemedicine at Lancaster Rehabilitation Center
Collaborative Technology Increases Patient Success By Sarah Brown
Two decades into the 21st century, no one can deny that the internet has made a significant and permanent impact on the way we work, interact with others, find information or services, and consume goods. The accessibility and ease with which we can digitally communicate, research a topic, or map a location has become a part of day-to-day life. This same technology has the potential to improve the quality of health care and to make it accessible to more people. The telemedicine service offered to patients through Lancaster Rehabilitation Center (LRC) makes health care more efficient, better coordinated, and closer to home. The mission at LRC is “to be the premier choice for compassionate care and provide the highest quality of life possible for those entrusted in our care.” As the largest skilled nursing facility in Nebraska, they have gained a reputation as a top-tier provider in the healing process for patients in need of both short-term and long-term care. What many people may not know is that LRC specializes in individually customized, short-term care for post-acute cardiac patients. This includes patients who are recovering from coronary artery bypass surgery, valve replacement, or pacemaker implantation, as well as those in need of assistance managing changes to their functionality due to chronic conditions such as congestive heart failure. All such patients will find a rehabilitation program at LRC that provides them with the care they need after leaving the hospital and before transitioning back to living at home. The Bryan Telemedicine service used by LRC staff and patients adds one more component to the comprehensive care team of medical specialists, nurses, dieticians, physical therapists, social service staff, and CNAs. This team works together to create positive patient experiences. Jessica Wilcox is the nurse manager on the rehabilitation unit. “We’re always looking to be on top of the latest technology, and we’re always doing new things to better serve our patients,” Jessica explains, referring to LRC’s partnership with Bryan Telemedicine. While telemedicine is still a relatively new part of the scope of services at LRC, it has already proven to be highly successful, she notes. “The readmission rate once patients leave our care is very low.” There have been so many advancements in surgeries in recent years that staff and practitioners in skilled nursing facilities like LRC have patients coming into their facilities sooner and being ready to leave sooner. “It’s our job to get them better quicker and to get them home,” Jessica continues, “as well as making sure they’re able to stay home successfully.”
12
Telemedicine helps LRC’s staff do just that. It helps keep patients and their providers connected, even if they are in very different locations. With telemedicine, patients can be diagnosed and treated by a doctor via a computer or mobile device. This allows patients to stay in their home communities or even in their own homes while receiving top-notch care from doctors who may be far away. Telemedicine provides many advantages, Jessica points out. “Telemedicine is just easier and more convenient for people with limited mobility or who can’t transport themselves,” she says. It also greatly improves communication and coordination of care among all members of the treatment team. Heart surgeons, respiratory specialists, rehabilitation facility nursing staff, therapists, and general practitioners are all able to access, send, and receive necessary patient health information. “We look at the whole picture,” Jessica says. “We’ll never just drop a patient off at home and tell them, ‘Good luck!’ We’re committed to ensuring our patients are ready for discharge.” Telemedicine is a newer development in medical treatment, and some patients are hesitant to use it, at first. Jessica reassures them by explaining that telemedicine is “just another set of eyes. The practitioners on the receiving end of the unit do this every day, they are able to compare a patient’s current status to what happened in the hospital. They really specialize in the whole journey of hospital to rehab to home.” Telemedicine services are secure, as well. No information is stored in the telemedicine cart, and no recordings are made. The network is encrypted, so patients don’t need to worry about potential breaches of their personal information. Jessica encourages each patient to try it. The service is designed to help empower patients by giving them the support they need to manage their ongoing care needs while living as independently as possible. Oh, My Aching Head! Getting Help for Serious Headaches
By Linda Barnes
You’d be hard pressed to find a person who does not experience the occasional headache. Infrequent, moderate headaches will often respond to over-the-counter medication and do not interfere greatly with our everyday lives. Chronic head pain or migraine headaches are a different story. The most common type of headache is the tension headache. Migraine headache is more debilitating but less common—18 percent of us will experience migraines, with women more than twice as likely as men to have them. If headache interferes with your daily activities, it is time to get some professional guidance. Migraines are frequently described as intense, throbbing pain, often on one side. Besides pain, symptoms may include nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. They can occur on a regular basis or more rarely. The cause of migraines is not fully understood, but certain triggers are commonly recognized. These include too much or too little sleep, hormonal changes, alcohol, skipped meals, stress, weather, caffeine, light, noise, certain odors, and some food additives. Most researchers believe that migraines result when changes in natural substances in the brain cause inflammation and swelling. Different types of prescriptions are available to treat migraine— those that you take when a migraine starts and those that you take on a daily basis to reduce the frequency or severity of headaches. Botox injections are FDA-approved for chronic migraine (that

is, headaches on more than 15 days per month) and work by interrupting the pain transmission process in the brain. At the other end of the spectrum are tension headaches, which typically involve milder pain than migraines. However, they can be debilitating if they become chronic. The pain is often described as involving both sides of the head and feeling like a tight band or vice is surrounding the head. The pain usually doesn’t worsen with physical activity, so people are often able to continue with their daily pursuits. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient to treat occasional tension headaches, but if they become frequent or long-lasting, chronic tension headaches may require prescription medications to prevent or ease the pain and avoid the disruption to your daily life. Non-medical treatments might include biofeedback, relaxation techniques, acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic adjustments, or physical therapy. Since stress and anxiety are often

at the root of tension headaches, cognitive behavioral therapy may be indicated, as well. A concern regarding chronic tension headaches is that frequent use of over-thecounter pain relievers can have negative effects on the stomach, kidneys, liver, and other organs. Since anxiety causes muscle tension and tension contributes to headache, strategies to reduce anxiety and tension can help. Biofeedback uses electrodes on the skin to help you recognize areas of tension so those areas can be intentionally relaxed. Anyone who has had a massage knows how relaxed and refreshed you feel when it’s done! Acupuncture uses thin needles inserted at certain points on the body. Many people report a decrease in pain and distress after an acupuncture treatment. Since stress is often a trigger for migraine and also contributes to tension headache, these alternative treatments may be effective for both types of headache. They may be used alone or in combination with other treatments to both ease symptoms and prevent occurrences. Hypnosis has been effective for some patients, to help them relax or make beneficial lifestyle changes. Regular exercise is another great stress reliever. Migraines are triggered in many people by certain foods or by lack of certain nutrients. Regular healthy meals, avoiding any specific triggers, may aid prevention. Some novel approaches are being studied. Non-invasive brain stimulation, using low intensity electrical currents, causes no pain and is easy to dispense. Magnetic pulses are similarly used. In one study, a device placed on the forehead for 20 minutes per day has shown a 50 percent reduction in headache days for participants. The causes and varieties of headaches are complex—and we’ve only discussed two of the most common types here. Headache can be a symptom of a disease or even a stroke, so an accurate diagnosis is critical. Specialists in neurology and pain management are among the professionals who can help. For chronic tension headaches, massage therapists, chiropractors, and those trained in biofeedback or hypnosis may offer relief. A pain clinic or clinic specializing in headaches typically brings together a team from a variety of disciplines to diagnose and treat. Experts in pain management will develop a unique plan for each patient. Their focus will be on relieving pain and preventing future distress. Heal Thyself Regenerative Therapies in Medicine and Aesthetics
By Ellen M. Walker
Who wouldn’t be interested in what seems like miraculous regeneration of body tissues, using cells from the patient’s own body? Researchers have been working for years on better ways to help the body repair itself with its own growth factors, and some of these treatments are already in use. Let’s take a look at two of them: stem cell treatment and platelet-rich plasma. First of all, what are stem cells? The National Stem Cell Foundation describes them as the body’s “master cells,” the cells from which all organs, tissues, and blood are created. These multipurpose cells can develop into all the other, more specific types of cells in the body, including heart and muscle cells, blood cells, brain cells, and bone cells. In fact, they’re doing this in your body all the time, working as kind of a repair system, replenishing certain types of cells that have died or malfunctioned. Stem cells in their embryonic stages have the ability to develop into any kind of cell—that’s how animals develop in utero. Adult stem cells, on the other hand, can generally only develop into the type of body tissue in which they reside. This limits the types of conditions they can treat. However, research that coaxes adult stem cells into developing into different types of cells is ongoing and exciting! Stem cell therapy is when additional stem cells are introduced into the body to help this regenerative process along. For example, when a cancer patient undergoes chemo and radiation therapy,

healthy cells are destroyed along with the cancer cells. Stem cells (often harvested from a healthy donor’s bone marrow) can be infused into the patient’s blood. As the injected cells settle into the patient’s bone marrow, they begin to grow more healthy cells. In 2019, scientists are working to develop an effective stem cell treatment to help patients with diabetes produce their own insulin. Stem cell regeneration also promotes repair of neurological damage from Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, even spinal cord injuries. Stem cells can be injected into a joint crippled by arthritis to help regrow cartilage. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of science’s stem cell revolution, as the list of discoveries continues to grow. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is essentially your own blood, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and then injected back into your body to boost cellular repair and regrowth. Like stem cell therapy, it is often used in orthopedic applications like
www.womensedition.com
the treatment of osteoarthritis, overuse injuries, and other joint issues. Recently, platelet-rich plasma has been used in aesthetics, as well, where its antiaging properties are fighting wrinkles. One example is what is known as a “vampire” face lift (so-called because it uses blood to regenerate tissue). The plasma is injected into your face, and the same regenerative properties that are helping regrow cartilage in a knee will stimulate collagen and cell growth in the skin. This improves texture, skin tone, and fine lines. The results get better over a few months and last for up to two years. A key practical advantage of stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma is that they are relatively non-invasive and can help patients avoid the risks of surgical treatment. Of course, cells must be harvested first. With platelet-rich plasma, the harvesting process is essentially a blood draw for the patient; the rest of the work is done in the lab. Stem cell harvesting is a little more involved and may require access to bone marrow (often from the hip), but it’s far from a surgical procedure. In either case, the therapies are reintroduced into the area being treated. Multiple treatments may be required. The results of stem cell therapy are widely varied, based on things like the area treated and the level of deterioration. You probably won’t feel any improvement for a few weeks, at least. After that time, improvement should increase over the next several months. For arthritis, treatment studies have shown results that last anywhere from six months to several years. If you’re interested in what this type of treatment might be able to do for your health conditions, choose a practitioner who is trained in these therapies. Specialized practitioners may have significant experience with stem cell therapy or platelet-rich plasma treatments to help heal worn-down or injured joints. If wrinkles are what you want to improve, check with your dermatologist for a recommendation. Not all spas can offer the vampire facial because it is not a strictly cosmetic procedure, but a medical spa may offer the service. It’s an exciting moment for this field of medicine, and you could be a part of it! Talk to your doctor today and learn what stem cell therapy or platelet-rich plasma could do for you. Designer Floors Functional and Fashionable Flooring
By Robyn V. Powell
Whether you’re building a new home or planning a remodel, one of the most important decisions is your choice of flooring. Just how important is flooring? According to designers, floors not only provide the functional foundation of any space, they set the design tone for the entire home. Thanks to technology, homeowners have more flooring choices than ever before, with design options to suit every lifestyle and budget. Flooring styles and materials have undergone a major evolution in recent years, and 2019 delivers with even more exciting trends. With so many options, choosing the right floor can be overwhelming. Exploring the most popular options can narrow your choices and help you find the flooring product that makes the best sense for your home. Flooring manufacturers across the board are replicating the look and feel of natural wood and stone in 2019. Solid wood has been the classic choice of homeowners for generations. However, for active families, homes with pets, or rooms with high levels of moisture, hardwood hasn’t always been a viable option. Technology now allows manufacturers to replicate the look of natural wood directly onto tiles in a very realistic way. Ceramic and porcelain tiles provide gorgeous options that rival the good looks of solid wood while easily holding up to the highest traffic and wettest environments. These tiles offer homeowners the best of all worlds, emulating the warm, comfortable look of natural hardwood while

providing the functional advantages of tile. As an added bonus, tile requires little to no maintenance and is simple to keep clean. Though classic stone floors have always been well-loved, the high price point of natural stone has meant classic stone floors weren’t accessible for everyone. Once again, technology has saved the day, allowing homeowners to achieve the beautiful look of natural stone without the hefty price tag. Manufacturers have recognized the desirability of luxurious stone, so expect to see lots of marble-look ceramic tile in 2019. Ceramic and porcelain tile allow homeowners to enjoy all the benefits of beautiful stone at a fraction of the cost and with little to no maintenance. Hardworking tile is extremely pet-friendly, cleans up easily, resists scratches, and won’t retain odors. For those with a more minimalist style, ceramic tiles that look like slate offer clean, natural, and edgy styling. Tiles continue to get ›››

larger. We’ve been seeing lots of 12x24-inch tile, but we should expect to see tiles go even bigger, including large format slabs. Shapes are evolving, too, with mosaics, hexagons, and scallops personalizing spaces and adding visual interest. For those accustomed to seeing plain concrete slabs serve as flooring for basements, garages, and patios, discovering that concrete floors are a popular and viable choice for the modern home interior may come as a surprise. If the thought of putting a sidewalk in as the floor of your house repels you, don’t write it off too quickly. Concrete works with a lot of design aesthetics and can be customized with polished, etched, or even stained finishes. Distressed concrete goes through a process to minimize the highly polished look and produce a worn, soft patina that works beautifully in contemporary or industrial-styled homes. Among concrete’s benefits are durability and ease of maintenance. The downside of concrete floors is that the very same unyielding hardness that makes them so durable can be uncomfortable to stand on for long periods of time. One way to offset the hardness is with the placement of area rugs. Concrete can also feel cold underfoot and is often installed in conjunction with radiant heat. Carpet remains a popular flooring choice. Like a favorite sweater, carpet is cozy, comfortable, and practical. Because carpet fibers hold heat, carpet has an insulating quality that can lower energy costs better than any other flooring. Carpet now comes in tons of fun colors and textures; the variety of color, pattern, and texture makes it possible to fit almost any design style. Carpet is quiet to walk on, durable, and non-slip, making it a great overall value. Consumers want a high-performance, stylish carpeting product to complement their personal and curated interiors and are demanding both design and function at a variety of price points. More manufacturers are offering beautiful styling paired with features like waterproof backing that make sense for consumers with even the most active lifestyles. The flooring in your home is something you will see and walk on every single day. Before making your flooring decisions, it’s best to view and touch flooring samples in real life, not just online. Visit flooring stores or interior design studios to experience the wide array of beautiful choices. You’re sure to find flooring that you will love. Switching Gears in Your Career? Continuing Education for Your Dream Job By Janette Calabro
If you’re a woman considering a career change, you’re not alone. According to recent data, nearly nine out of 10 women contemplate a switch in career direction. There are multiple reasons that women want to change careers. Women may crave new experiences, creative challenges, or the freedom to break away from a nine-to-five job. Most of all, they want a career that’s more than just a paycheck. Women don’t want to settle for less! The National Center for Education (NCES) notes that “female students earned the majority of certificates, associate degrees, and bachelor’s degrees” in the academic year 2015–2016. Education enrollment is expected to increase between the fall of 2018 and the fall of 2027 to 20.5 million. Yep, there’s a good possibility that more education is needed to pursue that new job you’ve been dreaming about. Older women are heading back to school, too, often part-time or in the evenings, and Forbes muses that going back to college after age 50 may be the new normal. Forty percent of women in their 50s or older are transitioning into a new career phase. They’re looking to up-skill for various reasons. Some sidelined their education and careers to start families, some want to stay competitive in the workforce, and some simply enjoy the learning phase. That doesn’t mean the majority are clamoring for ivy-clad colleges for further education—not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s best to take a look at the numerous choices that exist for all women who are gravitating toward a career change and will need further education to do it. To figure that out, we need to look at what kinds of careers women are seeking. Not everyone has the same dream job, and some people will need to continue working while they’re training. For working professionals and students eager to move onto higher-level work quickly, accelerated course studies are designed to be completed quickly with rigorous phases of learning (sometimes called “boot camps”). Accelerated courses, like traditional programs, offer all manner of degrees, from associate to doctorate, but be prepared for short, intensive training. Compare a traditional college course at 16 weeks to an accelerated course, which is compressed into five- to 10-week sessions. You won’t sacrifice quality of knowledge gained, but you may need to spend weekends and evenings on campus. Some schools offer hybrid courses that are partially completed online. Common areas of study in accelerated programs include education, administration, business, liberal arts, and information security. Check admission requirements for each school’s prerequisites. Another option for continuing education is a community college or trade school. Both have an edge in specialized training that a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree might be too broad to address, and they are
20
typically lower in cost per credit hour. Community colleges and technical schools (in the same vein as trade schools) generally offer associate degrees (usually two years of education) and certifications in specialties such as fashion or interior design, photography, nursing, veterinary technology, computer technology, even sign language interpretation. The American Association of University Women (AAUW) says that “more women than ever before— upwards of four million—are relying on community college for higher education and workforce preparation.” For example, if you have an interest in becoming an air traffic controller, you’ll likely need a two-year associate degree, not a four-year bachelor’s degree. The median income for ground personnel who radio pilots to direct their aircraft’s direction is an estimated $122,000 annually—not bad for two years of study! If you’re considering a specialty degree but think you might want a bachelor’s degree or higher down the road, check with your school to make sure that your credits will transfer. In fact, it’s best to check with both the school you’re attending and the school you plan to apply to for their specific policies. In some cases, your two-year associate degree or other certification credits can be bridged into a bachelor’s program. Not all credits are transferable, though. Some credits may not work with your new major. When in doubt, check with your school adviser. One of the fastest growing professions in the United States is licensed practical nurse (LPN). As assistants to doctors and registered nurses (RNs), LPNs provide critical care to patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities. It takes about 12 months to become an LPN. Advanced nursing education for RN or higher levels requires substantially more training. The most popular nursing program starts with a twoyear associate degree, followed by a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Courses of study include anatomy, nutrition, chemistry, microbiology, and interpersonal communication. Another popular career switch is into cosmetology, the study of beauty treatment. Education requirements vary from state to state but can usually be completed in a year or two and can include everything from hair and cosmetics to skin and massage therapy to manicures and pedicures. Beauty professionals can branch off into aesthetics,
www.womensedition.com
catering toward a passion for skin care. Education requirements vary by state, but applicants must pass state-approved skin care courses and an aesthetics exam at a cosmetology school or community college in order to practice. Expect four to six months of full-time classes (or about nine to 12 months part-time). This type of education is hands-on combined with academic, usually landing you in a salon or spa environment. There is growing demand for medical aestheticians, which is a type of licensed skin care specialist. The focus is more clinical, in a medical setting. Course studies for medical aestheticians include microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, and facial peels. These techniques require more advanced studies, investing around 600 education hours for licensing. Massage therapists can work in many different environments, from patient rejuvenation in hospitals and clinics to health clubs and chiropractic offices. Again, licensing requirements vary by state, but most require 330 to 1,000 hours. Training in vocational and community schools usually requires an exam before practicing. This profession is physically demanding but rewarding—and be sure to prepare for long hours of standing! It takes about two years to complete a culinary program at a community college or culinary school. For those who want to reach the peak in their profession, it’s best to do more than simply cook—search for an apprenticeship meant to guide you to the top of your appetizing dream. If your goal is to practice law, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree before admission to law school. A Juris Doctor (JD) is a doctoral degree—most full-time students can complete their legal studies for a JD in three years. Check the American Bar Association (ABA) website for specifics regarding the bar exam in your state. Online
courses offer legal training, but you may not be able to earn an ABA-accredited JD online. In some fields, however, online courses can be a great way to meet your educational needs with more flexibility. In January, U.S. News ranked 2019 as the best year for choices of online programs and colleges. That includes advanced education for earning a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree—all while sitting at your home computer, in your pajamas, with a cup of coffee, if you so choose. You can earn a degree in fields like computer science, business, education, or accounting. Even degrees that lead to higher-paying careers such as nuclear or aerospace engineer can be earned online. Employers value online degrees as long as the awarding college is legitimate—they often don’t care whether you listened to lectures in a classroom or in front of your home computer. The decision to go back to school in order to switch careers is a big one! If one of your burning concerns is cost, research scholarships and grants specifically for women returning to college. Scholarships are usually merit-based, while grants are based on financial need. Federal student loans are another option—they have fixed interest rates and are typically less expensive than private loans. If you find you need a break on repayment, student loans offer deferment and forbearance options, along with flexible repayment and even opportunities for loan forgiveness. There are numerous websites that offer help to pay for college. Try oedb.org or studentaid.ed.gov to explore some options. Follow an education plan toward the job you really want, and work won’t feel so much like work! Does Your Home’s Exterior Need a Lift? Call Albracht Perma Siding and Window Company
By Marge Shoemaker
Your home is likely the most valuable investment you have. It endures a lot of wear and tear…some of which we don’t notice until we look for it. Now that summer weather is beckoning us outdoors, it’s time to take stock. How are your windows? If they’re like mine, they need a good washing—inside and out! Can you see clearly through them, once they’re clean? If your windows are doublepaned, there shouldn’t be any moisture trapped between the panes. Condensation is an indication of a broken seal or crack. Check your doors. Do they close securely? Can you see gaps between the frame and the door? Do you feel a breeze when the door is closed? Any of these issues could indicate a problem. If your door is solid but just out of style, perhaps it’s time for an inviting new door to greet your guests. Inspect your siding. Is it cracked? Are pieces loose or missing? Have recent storms created pockmarks or
22
scars? Does it need a coat of paint? If you’re tired of painting, you may want to replace old Tom and Steven Albracht wooden siding with something more maintenancefree. How about your roof? Are your shingles intact? Are you finding plant sprouts in the gutters or downspouts clogged with debris? Do heavy rains bring water damage into the house? If you answered “Yes!” to any of these questions, I
www.womensedition.com
suggest you call Albracht Perma Siding and Window Company. Al Albracht bought Perma Stone (later changing the name to Perma Siding) in 1958, and it’s been family-run ever since. Tom Albracht and his brother, Steve, have run the company together since the early 1990s. “Dad bought the company the year I was born,” Tom notes. “We learned the company from the ground up. My siblings and I have all helped out in one capacity or another over the years.” Although Tom and Steve are not ready to retire yet, Tom says they’re hoping the next generation will eventually take over and keep it in the family. The Albracht brothers are particular about the products they present to their clients. “We want to give our clients the best materials possible so that we (and the manufacturers) can offer a reliable warranty.” Perma Siding deals directly with the manufacturers. By cutting out the middleman, Tom explains, they can offer their customers better prices. If you live in an older home and have put off getting new windows because your windows are unusually sized, Perma Siding can help. “Some older homes won’t accommodate current standard size windows and doors without a lot of retro-fitting,” Tom says. To solve this problem, Perma Siding often has windows and doors custom-made to ensure a good fit. “Custom may cost a little more than what’s found in the big box stores, but a better fit is more economical and efficient in the long run,” he advises. One of the manufacturers that Perma Siding works with is ProVia. “For years, we’ve used ProVia doors because of their high energy-conservation rating,” Tom says. Recently, they’ve expanded their association with ProVia to include windows, too. According to a survey of remodelers and contractors in Remodeling magazine, ProVia vinyl windows are rated number
one in a quality-ranking list of 45 manufacturers. That was no surprise to Tom. “We’re comfortable, based on our past experience with the manufacturer and this survey, that the change to ProVia windows is beneficial to everyone concerned,” he states proudly. Perma Siding has worked with other manufacturers for years, building trust on all sides. Leaf Sentry gutter covers, produced locally in Elkhorn, are worry-free. Mastic siding, virtually maintenance-free, has been a reliable mainstay for years. IKO offers an assortment of shingles, including architecturally designed composites that resemble shake shingles. DaVinci shingles are molded to resemble tile. “We know our manufacturers have high standards in maintaining quality control over their wares, and our manufacturers know that we hire competent workmen to install their products,” Tom shares. “Our crews know that we and the manufacturers will stand behind their work. We pass all that trust—and savings—on to our customers.” Although some installations depend on the weather, Perma Siding strives to keep their crews working year-round. Siding can be installed in the winter, as can doors and windows, though warmer weather may offer more comfort for the homeowner. Roofs, gutters, and decks generally require warmer weather for safety reasons. Plan ahead. Allow time for you and the crew to prepare. Call now for an estimate. Bids are good for six months. Albracht Perma Siding is bonded, insured, and licensed by both the City of Omaha and the State of Nebraska. The office is located at 10723 Mockingbird Drive, in Omaha. Reach them by phone at 402-331-4666 or find them online at permasiding.com. WE

Helping Families Grow Infertility Treatments for Couples
By Leslie Byrne
When you find yourself unable to conceive, it’s common to feel very alone. It seems like no one else is going through the same thing and like there’s no hope for your dreams of a family. In reality, infertility is more common than you might think, and there are many ways that modern medicine can help you conceive a child. You’re not alone! The term “infertility” has a specific medical definition, and that’s a good place to start. When a woman younger than 35 years is unable to become pregnant after a full year of having intercourse without birth control, she is considered to have infertility issues. For women 35 and older, the length of time drops down to only six months of unprotected sex. Out of 100 couples, 12–13 will have difficulty conceiving. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 6.1 million American women between the ages of 15 and 44 years will have difficulty becoming (or staying) pregnant. That’s about 10 out of 100 American women, so it is pretty common. Female infertility is most often caused by ovulation problems—if you don’t ovulate, you can’t get pregnant. Many ovulation problems are due to hormone imbalance. Another common cause is blocked fallopian tubes. Uterine fibroids, which are non-cancerous tumors that develop in the walls of the uterus, can also cause infertility. Being older than 30, smoking, heavy drinking, poor diet, diabetes,
24
stress, or too much athletic training can all decrease a woman’s chances of conceiving. Being extremely underweight or overweight; having a history of sexually transmitted diseases, endometriosis, or thyroid problems; or having undergone radiation or chemotherapy can also decrease a woman’s chances of getting pregnant. Of course, infertility problems are not just for women. About one third of fertility issues are associated with the male half of the couple. (Another third is associated with the woman, and the final third includes cases in which both the man and the woman have infertility issues or the source of the problem cannot be determined.) In men, the common causes of infertility include erectile dysfunction and varicocele, which is when the veins in the scrotum become enlarged and may damage the sperm. Low sperm count and blocked tubes can also be infertility issues for men. A man’s fertility can be affected by many of the same factors as
www.womensedition.com
women, like age over 40 years, smoking, diabetes, or heavy alcohol use. Steroid use, as well as radiation or chemotherapy treatment, can also adversely affect a man’s fertility. For both men and women, testing to find the cause of infertility starts with a physical exam and a full review of medical history. For men, a semen analysis is usually ordered. For women, tests include a pelvic exam and blood tests to check hormone levels and to learn when ovulation occurs. The fallopian tubes are examined to ensure there is no blockage. This can be done with specialized x-rays or with a laparoscopic camera. To view the uterus, a transvaginal ultrasound or hysteroscopy (camera in the uterus) may be indicated. Once the cause of infertility is determined, the most common remedies include medications and surgery. Fertility medications work like normal hormones to increase ovulation and can be taken orally or by injection. The success rates for these medications vary but generally help increase fertility by 25–50 percent. The potential risks of some fertility drugs include ovarian issues (including tumors) or pregnancies with multiple babies, which bring their own risks. Some women may benefit from surgery to correct a physical problem that is preventing conception. Other options include in vitro fertilization (eggs are fertilized outside the body and subsequently implanted) and egg freezing (eggs are harvested and frozen for later use). Lifestyle changes often help with infertility. Eating a healthier diet, quitting smoking, cutting down on alcohol, increasing exercise, and decreasing stress can help overcome some causes of fertility (not to mention improving your health overall). Alternative medications can include herbs and supplements. Be sure to keep track of any lifestyle changes you’ve made so you can share them with your healthcare team. Reproductive endocrinologists specialize in fertility and are trained in using treatments like in vitro fertilization and egg freezing. Start with your primary care physician or gynecologist. Ask for a recommendation for an endocrinologist or a fertility clinic that focuses solely on helping people become parents. You can check out the CDC’s federal database of success rates at various clinics online at cdc.gov/art/artdata. If you’re struggling to conceive, don’t wait—ask your doctor how today’s solutions may lead you to the family you’ve dreamed of having. Lincoln Orthopaedic Center Patient-Centered Care
By Kit Boesch
“There has never been a day I didn’t want to come to work!” says Matthew C. Reckmeyer, MD, of Lincoln Orthopaedic Center. Doesn’t that sound like a doctor you’d love to visit? Someone who loves what he does, loves who he works with, and always wants the very best outcome for his patients. I speak from personal experience, as a patient who has had four very successful surgeries, all performed by Dr. Reckmeyer. Needless to say, I am a fan. Talking with him for this article, however, gave me an even greater appreciation for the scope of Lincoln Orthopaedic Center and how the organization and its 12 highly qualified physicians have met the increasing challenges of innovation found in all areas of orthopaedics and sports medicine today. Lincoln Orthopaedic Center opened its doors in 1948, and their current location is at 6900 A Street. Their first goal is to provide patient-centered care. When asked exactly what that means, Dr. Reckmeyer smiles and quotes the great entrepreneur Marshall Field: “Give the lady what she wants!” For example, if a joint replacement is necessary, the patient decides when to have it done, all the way down to the date and time. Dr. Reckmeyer did not set out to be a surgeon; he intended to be a pharmacist. As a College of Pharmacy student in Omaha, he ran track, qualified for the two-mile relay team, and loved his pharmacy classes. During his fourth year, someone suggested that he switch to medical school. He tried it and loved it, finding great satisfaction in what he learned. After years of doing what he loves, Dr. Reckmeyer was able to see things from a different perspective. Two years ago, a pickup truck hit him while he was on his bicycle. During his six-month recovery of a pelvic fracture, he said he saw things from a very different perspective. Now, he says, he truly values what he thinks of as “the other side.” One of the great strengths of Lincoln Orthopaedic Center is that they have changed as the needs of their community changed. The number of physicians has gone from four to 12. While their main practice is at 6900 A Street, they also practice medicine all around Lincoln. They work with athletes on local teams like Lincoln Stars hockey and Saltdogs baseball, as well as with the student-athletes at Doane University, Wesleyan University, and Concordia University. They work at both Bryan East and Bryan West, as well as at CHI. With a list like that, it sounds like these hardworking physicians never take a break! In fact, Lincoln Orthopaedic Center has had to close only once in 70 years—and that was because clients told them the ice was too dangerous! When they’re not busy providing high-quality orthopaedic treatment all over town, they also give
26
back to the community in other ways. For example, they host an annual golf tournament to benefit the Friendship Home of Lincoln. To date, they have raised well over $100,000. One of the biggest changes to meet community needs was the creation of the LOC Surgery Center, also at 6900 A Street. Care at the LOC Surgery Center is usually covered by insurance, like hospital care, but at about one third of the cost. They offer a wide variety of injury treatment and surgical repair, including partial knee replacement, rotator cuff surgery, and treatments for torn ACLs, hand injuries, and fractures. The efficient and caring treatment that patients receive at the LOC Surgery Center is cost-effective, and patients find themselves home the same day. One of the overarching goals of the staff at Lincoln Orthopaedic Center is to “keep clients happy.” This begins with courteous and respectful staff at the front desk, includes timely treatment to meet their patients’ needs, and, of course, ends with successful outcomes. When asked if he was looking forward to retirement anytime soon, Dr. Reckmeyer says, “Not yet! I’ve got to say, right now there is no better place to practice medicine than in Nebraska. In the last 30 years, the changes that have occurred are huge, and it is exciting to be a part of that change.” Patients in Lincoln and beyond will be glad to hear that Dr. Reckmeyer isn’t retiring soon. If you’d like to have Dr. Reckmeyer as your doctor, reach out to Lincoln Orthopaedic Center. Find them online at ortholinc.com or call 402-436-2000 for more information. WE

Countertops and Backsplashes Do Your Kitchen and Bathroom Need a Lift?
By Anne Yankus
Now that summer is winding down, it’s time to start thinking about projects for the interior of your home. What better way to spruce up your kitchen or bathroom than installing a new countertop or backsplash? Today’s countertops come in more different materials than ever before. Ranging from the many affordable laminate designs to pricier concrete or recycled glass, there’s something out there for every style and budget. The most popular designs this year have been quartz countertops (toppling the previously popular granite), honed leather finish (a matte finish that can be applied to any stone), and neutral tones. All options have their pros and cons, so let’s start with a brief description of the most popular options on the market: laminate, granite or quartz, bamboo or butcher block, concrete, and recycled glass. Laminate is the least expensive option on the market, and it comes in the widest range of designs and styles. Laminate also has the benefit of installation right on top of some existing countertops. When installed properly, laminate can be long-lasting and is resistant to heat and staining. It is, however, quite vulnerable to cuts and abrasions. Quartz and granite are mid-range price alternatives, and you get what you pay for. Quartz and granite are completely resistant to heat, cuts, and scratching, though granite is vulnerable to chipping corners. Granite also needs regular sealing to help with stains, while quartz requires little to no maintenance. Since both options are natural stone, each countertop is completely unique in design. Bamboo and butcher block cost about the same amount as granite or quartz but lack their sturdiness. Bamboo looks nice and brings a warm color to your decor, but it’s easily damaged, vulnerable to moisture, and needs regular applications of mineral oil or beeswax. Butcher block is more resistant to stains when varnished or more resistant to heat when oil-finished, but it’s never resistant to both. Like bamboo, it’s also vulnerable to water, which means it would only work for partial coverage in a kitchen setting and wouldn’t make sense in a bathroom. You might guess that concrete is cheap, since you see it everywhere. However, because each concrete countertop is custom-formed, it’s actually one of the most expensive options. Depending on who has installed it, the quality can vary widely, and it’s vulnerable to chips and scratches. Concrete can be sealed to protect against either stains or heat but not both (its protection depends on the sealant). It will need periodic resealing. Recycled glass is expensive but can give you a very unique aesthetic. Large shards create a bold look, whereas finer particles of ground glass can create a subtle effect. It’s resistant to heat, cuts, and scratches, but it’s vulnerable to stains.
28
Of course, the countertop is only half the equation. You may also want to consider updating your backsplash. While choosing countertop materials and designs, you’re generally limited by at least some need for functionality. Backsplashes are where you can really let your creativity shine! Laminate and ceramic tiles are generally the most popular picks for backsplash materials, but there’s a lot that can be accomplished with simple tiles. One popular design choice is ceiling-height backsplashes. This can create a unified look between your counters and your cabinetry. Subway tiles have been popular for several years now, but homeowners these days have been going for larger sizes than the standard 3x6 inches. Mirrored or metallic finishes are making a splash by bringing some brightness to otherwise neutral kitchens. In that vein, where countertops are going for more neutrals, backsplashes are trending toward vibrant colors and eye-popping patterns. Before you start tearing out your old kitchen or bathroom to re-invent them with new counters and backsplashes, consider hiring a professional installer, instead. It’s easy to accidentally damage your walls or cabinets when you’re removing old countertops and backsplashes. Many materials, like granite, quartz, and concrete, need specialized preparation before they can be installed. If you’re already working with an interior designer, your designer may have an installer to suggest. If not, ask around for recommendations from friends who have had work done recently or other professionals in the field. Once you’ve gotten a couple of recommendations, set up interviews, get a written estimate from each one, and follow your gut from there. Whether you want a more resilient material to better suit your needs or you just want to update the look of your kitchen or bathroom, replacing your countertop and backsplash can be a great way to get the job done! Disconnect to Reconnect It’s Time! Just for fun, let’s all try an experiment. The next time you meet friends for dinner, have everyone agree to leave their cell phones in the car. My best guess is that you will get objections. “I have to be available for the spouse/kids/grandkids/aging parents.” “I don’t agree on spending time with someone who is more attached to his cell phone than he is to me.” —Mohamed Ghazi, “Honest” Solution? Give them the name and phone number of the restaurant where you are going to be eating. Restaurants still have landlines! Explain to your own spouse/kids/grandkids/aging parents that you are doing an experiment to judge the quality of the evening by removing one of the biggest distractors out there… our phones. “Making sensible family rules around cell phones and driving is a way to love yourself, your marriage, your children, and the world well.” —Glennon Doyle Melton Sometimes I feel as if the world has gone a little bit mad. We are brainwashed into thinking that we are connected with the world, that all knowledge is at our fingertips. That may have some

truth to it, but the challenge is that human beings are becoming disconnected from one another at a remarkably rapid pace. “Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense.” —Gertrude Stein, novelist and poet A few years back, I was at a beautiful restaurant, on the beach, in Aruba. The stars were twinkling, the weather was perfect, and the food was top notch. I remember looking around to appreciate the night, to appreciate how incredibly fortunate I was. Then I saw a table that made me sad. There was a family—mother, father, and two teenage sons. They were not appreciating the beauty of the moment. They were all looking down at their phones. Not looking at one another, not talking, not staring at the stars. Even when their food came, they each ate with one hand and had the other hand on the phone. Wow. At that moment, I recognized how disconnected our phones have made us become…and it has only gotten worse. I admit that, at times, I am as guilty of this as everyone else is. It’s time to reconnect with those that we love. Next dinner out, I’m going to revisit my experiment. The first time I tried it, I was amazed at how much more connected I felt to the people I was with! Give it a try, and let me know how it goes! Email me at: publisher@wew3.com. WE

Adulting What Does It Mean? Recently, I came across the sentence, “Adulting is hard.” I initially thought it meant that being an adult is difficult, which it often is. Then I met the term in an essay regarding young adults not having the requisite skills to live on their own. This made me reconsider my original definition. Still another meeting suggested that the term referred to not acting with courtesy, civility, or care when dealing with others. After pondering this term for several weeks, I decided to ask the girls the next time we met. At first, they felt that it referred to the basic skills most of us learned either in home economics or from our mothers. Janie said she tried to teach her kids basic cooking. “I started supervising small tasks when they were little, like following a simple recipe and measuring ingredients, then planning a shopping list,” she recalled. “I feel safer with them using the microwave than using the stove.” Suzy reported teaching her kids to sew on missing buttons or merit badges. “They learned how to thread a needle and sew basic stitches without constantly pricking their fingers…they didn’t even use a thimble,” she said. Marie wondered about kids who didn’t know how to do basic maintenance when they borrowed the car. “Daddy made sure I could pump gas and use the air hose,” Judy reminisced. She then added with a smile, “That came in handy a couple
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
of times. He’d never have let me use the car again if he had to rescue me and my friends because I forgot.” Barb reminded us that some kids don’t know how to operate the dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, or washer and dryer. “If they can’t take care of those things, they shouldn’t be living on their own,” she insisted. We also talked about the necessity of teaching our kids problem-solving skills. “I tried to teach my kids to be polite,” Donna commented. “Asking someone to do something and then showing gratitude means a lot. ‘Please’ and ‘thank you’ don’t cost a thing.” Carole remarked on the lack of civility in society. “I hate it when name-calling takes the place of discussion when there’s a difference of opinion. It only escalates the problem!” she insisted emphatically. We all agreed that “adulting” has many connotations. Basically, all people, male and female, young and old, should know how to take care of themselves by cooking and cleaning, making small repairs, and using basic tools if they are to survive on their own. They need problem-solving skills in all sorts of conditions, and they need to know how to solve differences with civility. They need to use their manners, show concern for others, and accept responsibility for their actions and reactions. In short, we decided that “adulting” means being an adult, and it includes all that that implies. What do you think? WE

New and Redesigned Models for 2020 What to Buy, How to Buy
By Brennan Hallock
That “new car smell” has come to symbolize the excitement of purchasing a brand-new vehicle, but there’s much more to it than just the scent! If you’ve never experienced the joy of driving a new vehicle off the lot, the 2020 auto lineup is your chance. Porsche Taycan (starts at $80,000): This is Porsche’s first all-electric model. The electric engine provides a range of 310 miles and should have a 250-mile range with a mere 15-minute charge. Of course, Porsche is known more for its performance than its economy, and this vehicle does not step too far outside Porsche’s comfort zone. It will be able to generate 402, 536, or 670 horsepower, depending on which engine you choose. The most powerful option will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Jeep Gladiator (starts at $34,500): This is Jeep’s first pickup in years. It is everything a Jeep lover could want in a pickup: removable doors and top, iconic Jeep grill, standard rectangular Jeep frame, 3.6L V6 engine, 285 horsepower, 260 pound-feet of torque, and, of course, a pickup bed. Cadillac XT6 (starts at $53,690): The XT6 fills the Cadillac void between the giant Escalade and the mid-sized XT5. This beautiful addition to the Cadillac lineup will seat seven in three rows of seats and has all the standard luxuries that have become synonymous with Cadillac: heated seats and steering wheel,
power-folding second and third row seats, six USB ports, a ninespeed transmission, auto emergency braking, blind spot warning, and pedestrian detection. Ford Bronco (starts at $30,000): This model is a redesign of the model that was so popular in the 1990s. It looks surprisingly similar but has significant upgrades. It combines the sporty feel of its early years with the cargo space of its later years and is meant to be able to handle some good times off-road while still hauling what you need. Toyota Corolla Hybrid (starts at $18,700): This model will be more agile, more powerful, and sportier, in line with Toyota’s New Global Architecture platform. It reduces the vehicle’s weight and increases its fuel economy and safety. This redesign will also come with a new hybrid option, which boasts mileage of up to 50 mpg, at a surprisingly low starting price.

There are many things to consider before heading to your local dealership. The first is that negotiating is still an option (whether you enjoy it or not). The key is to be prepared. Before you begin negotiation, thoroughly research your potential purchase, have your upgrade options chosen, have a set price in mind, and be willing to walk away. Don’t be argumentative—be kind but firm. Don’t be insultingly low with your offers, either—you’ll come across as someone who didn’t do any research. Shopping around is important to the buying process, and it’s best to do your research before you head to the dealership. There are lots of sites online that have information about different makes and models. Check out cars.com, edmunds.com, kbb. com, jdpower.com, or caranddriver.com. Once you’re at the dealership, you’ll need to ask questions. Salespeople are trained and will be able to assist you as much as you let them. Some questions to ask include: How long is the warranty (and what does it cover)? What are some common repairs for the model? Are there any additional fees? Are manufacturer rebates (or low-cost financing) available? Here’s a tip: If you know there’s a rebate available, but the salesperson tells you it’s only available to customers who pay the sticker price, move on. This
is not true—these rebates come directly from the manufacturer, not the dealer. Keep in mind that women may be treated differently when buying a car. The truth is that everyone makes assumptions based on gender. It’s smart to acknowledge this beforehand and enter the situation armed against negative assumptions. Simply preparing yourself with knowledge about the model you’re interested in will give you an advantage. Keep in mind that a strong negotiator is always prepared to walk away. Be ready to say, “I’ll think about it,” or even a flat “no” if the dealer won’t give you the price you want. If you’re trading in a vehicle, check its value beforehand on a site like Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com). Financing can be a stressful part of car buying. You may feel CADILLAC XT6 less stress at the dealership if you’ve handled the financing portion beforehand by getting pre-approved for a loan at your bank or credit union. You can shop around for the best rate, and you won’t have to worry about it while you’re negotiating price and extra features at the dealership. Make this the year that you bring home that brandnew car smell! Sources for this article included: autowise.com, consumerreports. org, cars.usnews.com, and myfinancialgoals.org. WE

Positive Perspective
Brady Bunch It’s Time To Listen On a scale of one to 10, how would you rate your own listening skills? Years ago, I would have rated myself about an eight…and I would have been wrong. “One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say.” —Byrant H. McGill I have come to the conclusion that being a great listener is a whole lot harder and takes a lot more work than I ever could have imagined. I grew up in a family with six kids. Three girls, and then three boys, all born within a 10-year span. We were…and are…all very strong individuals, all very competitive with one another. If you wanted to be “heard,” you spoke up. You raised your voice. You interrupted. You talked over your brothers and sisters. I grew up learning to be a very poor listener. “Effective listening is more than simply avoiding the bad habit of interrupting others while they are speaking or finishing their sentences. It’s being content to listen to the entire thought of someone rather than waiting impatiently for your chance to respond.”—Richard Carlson About six years ago, my lack of listening skills was brought to my attention. Immediately, I went into denial. After all, I owned this
By Janet Van deWalle
magazine. I had met literally hundreds (if not thousands) of people over the years. How could I have gotten to where I was in my life if I hadn’t really been listening to my readers, my customers, and my coworkers all this time? The problem was, I very much respected the person who called me out. It was time for me to truly begin to listen. “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” —Stephen R. Covey Yep, that was me. I was great at paying very close attention to what someone said…so that I could come up with the perfect response to convince that person to move to my way of thinking. I was very “set in my ways,” to the point that I surrounded myself with people who agreed with me…or could be convinced to agree with me. “Most people do not have a problem with you thinking for yourself, as long as your conclusions are the same as, or at least compatible with, their beliefs.” —Mokokoma Mokhonoana Reflecting upon my business and my relationships was challenging. Frankly, it was hard to take a look at how I had been in the past and to make decisions about how I wanted to be different in the future. I admit, I’m not there yet. I am working on it every day. It’s hard, but it’s worth the journey. I promise. WE
