How It All Began…Our Story Hello, all! I hope your summers are going fabulously. Last month, I told all of you about my marriage plans. I will be getting married on August 25th. Due to print deadlines, I will not be able to share the details of the wedding until the October issue. This issue and next, I would like to tell our story and introduce you to the man who I will soon call my husband. As I said last month, I have known my partner for almost seven years. We met on Match.com. Yes, I went down that path! I hadn’t dated since I was 18, and I worked with all women. How in the world was I going to find a date? My niece, Kristina, had met the man she eventually married on Match. It was a fascinating experience! I was open to meeting men in person. I very quickly learned that texting, even phone conversations, didn’t give you a true picture of who the men were. I went on lots of “meet and greets,” as I called them. Nothing clicked until five months into it, when I met him. The chemistry was instant between the two of us. My partner is a 20-year Navy veteran. Ever since I was a child, I have considered myself a patriot. From him, I have gained a much deeper understanding of the huge sacrifices that our service men and women make in order to protect our country. Years ago, another veteran explained to me that military people “live by a strict code of honor,” unlike we civilians do. I admit, I really didn’t know what that meant back then. I do now. My partner explains it this way: “Honor, courage, and commitment.” My partner is a gentleman. He opens doors for me…and for everyone else, as well. He offers me assistance with my jacket. He says ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ He listens and is very respectful to me and others in his life. He lives by the Golden Rule. My partner is romantic…very much so! He holds my hand, he has a very soft heart—which has taught me to soften mine. He is very smart. We have had conversations about everything from black holes to boxing. (He was a boxer in his early days in the Navy. Twelve bouts, undefeated.) We talk all the time—in the morning, before our day starts, and then throughout the night. The word that comes to my mind that best describes him is chivalrous. According to Merriam-Webster, chivalrous means marked by honor, generosity, and courtesy. That is him! I have never met anyone like him. I’ll continue this next month! P.S. I can’t leave without wishing my beautiful granddaughter, McKenna, a happy birthday. Love you!

Hello, Sunshine! Yellow is for Everyone By Holly Bell
We all love sunshine, but you don’t need the sun to shine for YOU to shine! Hop on the hot new color trend: yellow. We have not seen this color in fashion since the ’70s, so it is unabashedly fresh, and designers everywhere are featuring this sunny color. Have you always thought you couldn’t really wear yellow? Think again—this year, every shade of the cheery color is out there! Gold is one of the most popular Pantone hues of this sunshiny tint, but you can also choose gentle Pastel Yellow, subtle Lemon Verbena, or sultry Turmeric, along with smooth Buttercup, classic Sunshine, or bold Saffron. It’s true that not every shade of yellow works with every skin tone, but one of these options is likely to work for you! Yellow is a terrific unisex color and a pleasure to have back in style. Guys can benefit by spreading a little sunshine, too. Maybe it’s time to add yellow to your special man’s polo shirt collection. Yellow can be an attention-getting head turner, or it can be softened down to almost a neutral. It looks most summery when worn with white, off-white, or beige. It is also a stunner worn with blues of any hue. It’s a simple mood lifter! It’s harder to feel down when you are sporting such a happy color. If you’re still hesitant about this uplifting hue, try starting with accessories. How about yellow shoes? Whether they’re pumps, sandals, or tennis shoes, yellow shoes are super wearable this summer. Pair them with a sundress, jeans, or white pants, and you have a style statement. A handbag is another easy way to incorporate yellow in your wardrobe this summer. Cross-body

bags are especially popular, and they look so modern and stylish in yellow. When choosing such a statement color, I think it is best to keep the styling simple and let the color do the talking. A great addition to any summer wardrobe would be a yellow cardigan. We all need a little shoulder cover in those chilly restaurants or on rainy days. You will find you are grabbing that yellow cardigan almost every time! Another bonus about yellow is that it transitions perfectly into a fall vibe. When worn with charcoal, browns, dark blues, or black, it is so easy to work into your fall transition wardrobe. It would layer perfectly under a sweater or blazer. Designers plan to move forward with the yellow concept through fall with the marigold tones. The fall runways were showing faux fur coats, jackets, and rain attire in this color. The Pantone Institute predicts that the hot trend colors will continue this fall with bright and vivid tones for everyone. Other popular colors that will work beautifully into your autumn wardrobe will be Dark Cheddar or Marigold, Chili Pepper, Galaxy Blue, and Eden (a rich, dark green). If yellow is just absolutely not to your taste, you still have beautiful colors to enjoy this summer. Another standout for the season is Powdery Ballet Pink. This is such a beautiful, soft color that it can almost be a neutral and can definitely work for men, too. Pink warms up your complexion and shows off a little summer tan beautifully. Hot Pink is also a great summer color. There are many variations in this. I find that the hot pink that has an orange undertone pairs best with light complexions, while the hot pink with the blue undertone is best on people with darker skin tones. One of the easiest ways to make a fashion statement is with color. Here are my favorite ways: First, wear one color from head to toe. Always a head-turner, the bold one-color statement is a no-brainer. Second, base your outfit on a single color but vary the hues for a monochromatic statement. An example would be a sky blue top, a royal blue skirt, and a navy shoe. This always creates an elegant look. Third, try a highcontrast color vibe that creates drama. A good example, of course, is black and white, but many other color combinations can bring the same excitement to your outfit. Classy and classic, the high-contrast color statement is always chic and in style. When you’re basing your wardrobe around color, it’s smart to arrange your closet the same way. Organize your clothing according to color instead of item type. When you do this, you’ll be surprised at the new combinations and outfits you’ll discover! Get started on a more colorful life this summer, and keep it going into fall. Hello, sunshine! She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

Lamb Kabobs Cut a 2-pound lamb loin into 1.5-inch cubes. Prepare a marinade by mixing 1/2 cup of red wine, 1 minced onion, 1 clove of minced garlic, 1 Tablespoon of chopped fresh mint, 1 Tablespoon of chopped fresh rosemary, and 1 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Place the cubed lamb in a bag or bowl along with the marinade and 12 large whole mushrooms. Refrigerate for 4–6 hours. Thread the lamb cubes onto soaked skewers, alternating with the mushrooms, large chunks of onion and peppers, whole cherry tomatoes, and parboiled quartered potatoes. Grill and cook until medium rare—brush with marinade as often as you like. Fresh Garden Salsa Cut up 4 ripe tomatoes (or use canned). Combine with 1 medium onion (chopped), 2 teaspoons of fresh lime juice, 1 cup of fresh corn kernels, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix by hand or lightly pulse in a food processor. Add 1/2 cup of fresh cilantro and let sit for 30–60 minutes. Serve with chips or on seafood or chicken. One-Pan Nachos Brown 1 pound of ground chuck with 1 diced onion, 1 diced jalapeño, 1/2 cup of salsa, and 1/2 teaspoon each of salt, pepper, ground cumin, and chili powder. in a heavy stockpot and add 1 cup of sugar, 2 Tablespoons of fresh lime or lemon juice, 1 Tablespoon of fresh minced ginger, 1 teaspoon of cumin, 1 teaspoon of salt, a pinch of cloves or allspice, and 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon. Add 1 Tablespoon of chopped onion, if you like, and mix well. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring often—skim off foam, if necessary. Reduce the temperature to low and cook for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Pour the mixture into 2 or 3 small sterilized canning jars, tighten the lids, and turn the jars over to seal (you will hear a pop). Refrigerate. This jam is especially good on biscuits, toasted baguettes, grilled fish, chicken, and pork. Garden Zucchini Bread In a bowl, whisk together 3 cups of flour, 4 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1/2 teaspoon of ginger. In another bowl, mix 2 cups of sugar with 3/4 cup of vegetable oil, 4 eggs, and 1 teaspoon of lemon peel. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Stir in 2 cups of shredded zucchini and 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts. Pour into 2 greased and floured loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes, until a toothpick tests clean. Cool for 20 minutes before removing from the pan. Game’s On Slow Cooker Meatballs Mix 1 pound of ground chuck with 1 egg, 2 Tablespoons of milk, 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs, and 3 Tablespoons of minced onion. Roll the mixture into small balls. Bake on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Place the baked meatballs in a slow cooker. Blend together 1 can of jellied cranberry sauce, 3/4 cup of chili sauce, and 1 Tablespoon of brown sugar. Pour the sauce over the meatballs. Cook on low for 3–4 hours.
Peas and New Potatoes Scrub a bunch (12–15) of new baby potatoes and cut each one in half. Boil for 8 minutes in salted water, adding 1 cup of fresh or frozen peas during the last 3 or 4 minutes of cooking. Drain and set aside. In the same pan, melt 2 Tablespoons of butter. Add a few bits of diced onion and cook for 3 or 4 minutes. Sprinkle in 2 Tablespoons of flour and some salt and pepper. Slowly add 2 cups of milk and stir until thick and creamy. Add the drained vegetables. Garnish with a few chopped chives. Chicken Tacos Put 6 boneless chicken thighs into a slow cooker. Add 1 cup of chicken broth, 1 cup of salsa, and 2 Tablespoons of taco seasoning. Cook on high for 3–4 hours. Shred the chicken and serve with tortillas, cheese, sour cream, and fresh tomatoes. To prepare in an Instant Pot, cook all ingredients together for 15 minutes on the meat setting, with quick release. Shred the chicken and serve with tortillas and other toppings. Oatmeal Banana Cookies Mix together 3 cups of quick-cooking oatmeal, 3 cups of flour, 1 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 and 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of cinnamon. In another bowl, mix together 1 and 1/2 cups of butter, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and 2 cups of mashed bananas (3 or 4 bananas). Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet, adding 1/2 cup of chopped nuts and a 12-ounce bag of chocolate chips. Drop by Tablespoons on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. WE

Little Waves Family Swim School From Bubbles to Backstrokes By Maria Harding
Whether our fond memories echo with the sounds of ricocheting diving boards or of singing bullfrogs, nothing evokes recollections of summer fun more than our time spent near the water. To maximize seasonal fun, it’s imperative that kids know how to stay safe around the water. That’s just what your children will learn at Little Waves Family Swim School. Mike McKamy, the owner and manager of Little Waves, fosters a happy balance between enjoying time in the water and maintaining a healthy respect for rules and safety. At Little Waves, he says, “we make the children wait to get in the water until their instructor tells them it’s okay.” To reinforce this conditioning at home, he adds, “we tell the parents to make them wait even longer.” This balance between fun and safety is a priority for everyone who works at Little Waves. The adult instructors teach children important safety skills “without even necessarily telling them they are learning about safety,” Mike says with a smile. “We’re always encouraging children to get on their backs in the water. When you’re on your back, you can breathe, you can talk, and you could call for help.” Little Waves instructors emphasize the age-old safety rule of not running on the deck, though the school features softer floors around the pool to avoid abrasion injuries in case of a fall. Parents are reminded to never leave children unattended around water. Mike is careful to note that even kids who know how to swim should never swim alone. He refers to water wings and other such inflatables as “evil” because they provide a false sense of security, impede children’s discovery of their bodies’ own natural buoyancy, and become deflated too easily. In short, you just can’t count on them, and children and parents need to know that. Of course, age-appropriate life jackets, approved by the U.S. Coast Guard, are crucial when people are in a boat or when you are supervising a large number of children. Each May, the Little Waves instructors have the students wear life jackets and jump into the pool to practice controlled swimming while being supported by these emergency devices. “We discourage parents from using them too much because children get accustomed to them,” advises Mike. “If you’re in the water with your kids, let them swim.” Little Waves is open year-round. An entire wall next to the pool is made up of tall windows, so swimmers can see the seasons pass by. Whether snow is falling outside or summer sunshine is cheering the space, the temperature of the water remains a constant 90 degrees Fahrenheit. “That’s partially for the kids in the water,” explains Mike. (Children are at greater risk for hypothermia than adults because of lower body fat content and smaller body size.)
12
August 2019
“It’s also for my staff,” he continues. “Teachers who are cold are distracted.” In addition Mike McKamy, owner to chlorine purification, which is the fastest and most effective way of killing impurities, the pool water at Little Waves is treated with UV light, which eliminates other micro-organisms. Using UV light also helps reduce the chemical smell of chlorine and the eye irritation it can cause. At what age should children begin swim instruction? According to Mike, the American Academy of Pediatrics very recently changed its official recommendation. The AAP states that children as young as one year should be taught to swim. At Little Waves, classes with parents can start in pre-walking stages, as young as six months of age, though the average age of the 800–900 swim students at Little Waves is around four years. Children develop at different rates. Ultimately, parents and caregivers know their children best and can determine their preparedness to begin swim or pre-swim instruction. Then again, as children build confidence with their bodies in the water, it can encourage independence and confidence in other areas of their development. Mike encourages families to visit and observe classes at the school to see if it’s a good fit for their children. “People are welcome to come in and see what we’re all about!” he affirms. All children can be accommodated at Little Waves, including those with special needs. All areas of the school are wheelchair accessible, and the experienced adult instructors work with children who have Down syndrome and who are on the autism spectrum. Little Waves Family Swim School is conveniently located in west Omaha at 175th Street and West Center Road. Classes are available for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-aged children, and pre-competitive swimmers. “The pre-competitive level has really filled a gap in Omaha between swim lessons and club swimming,” explains Mike. Course descriptions can be found on their website: littlewavesfamilyswimschool.com. For more information, please call 402-932-2030. WE

A Woman’s Work
Who’s the Crybaby? Making Women Cry
By Sharon Knierim
Women are often accused of breaking into tears frequently, and it is sometimes true. Crying doesn’t seem like a bad thing to me, but there are some in the population who still like to point it out when some people seem to cry more than other people. Maybe, as women, we are more emotional. Perhaps our feelings are closer to the surface, or, as I like to think, perhaps it’s simply that women are not so afraid to show their emotions. Why do we cry? We cry when we’re happy, when certain memories float to the surface. Sadness, too, can bring on a flood of tears that has to run its course. Emotionally tender movies will make us cry in unison. When a group of us recently watched the movie “A Star is Born,” the women in the group sobbed and carried on while the men sat, stone-faced, and then promptly started talking about football, baseball, soccer, and sailing. Of course, there’s an exception to every rule. My sister viewed the same movie and came away completely unscathed and dry-eyed. Seeing other people cry brings on the tears for some of us. When I was diagnosed with lung cancer a couple of years ago, I never did cry…but I believe that was partially because I didn’t possess enough extra air for such an extravagance. Nobody is surprised to know that men sometimes cry, too. Just like us gals, their strong emotions sometimes bring on the

tears. I once saw my own father sobbing after he was told that one of his very best friends had died suddenly. Upon receiving the news, he retreated immediately to the barn. Because I was a snoopy little girl, I silently followed him. There he was, crying his eyes out. I had only heard of his crying one other time and was really shocked to see this John Wayne kind of fellow in full-blown chest heaving mode. That’s just reality—all humans do have tears. There was a little girl in our second grade class who would cry for her mother as lunch time approached every day. One day, our teacher, Mrs. Powell, sent little Annie out of the room and lectured the rest of us not to mention mothers because it made Annie homesick. We listened attentively but did not comply with Mrs. Powell’s stern words because we enjoyed it when little Annie broke down in tears. When she cried, a huge

red line would appear across the bridge of her nose, and we thought that was the most fascinating thing we’d seen in our seven years of life. Needless to say, several of us ended up crying ourselves when Mrs. Powell learned of our rude and thoughtless behavior. Tears of pain are probably the worst. Many of us try to hold on until we cannot bear it any longer, but this is a dangerous endeavor. When we cry in pain, it often prompts others to do the same…before long, an entire box of tissues can be consumed. Sometimes, sharing positive, appreciative feelings with someone can make you both cry. There’s a cashier at a local big box store who I have grown to admire. Day after day, she shows up at work, welcomes customers cheerfully, and takes care of their business while showing enthusiasm about their lives.
Tears can be a good thing. They can wash away sadness or restore balance in life. When she and I had concluded our business one day last week, I told her how glad I always am that she is working when I use the store. I went on to relate to her just why she was so important to me. Sounds like a canned speech, doesn’t it? Well, by the time I had finished telling her all this, she was weeping. I went on to tell her how I think that we, as people, need to take the time to acknowledge each other’s good qualities, yada, yada, yada. By this time, we were both crying, and the people behind me in line were getting restless. I have not been back to that store since because I’m afraid the cashier may start crying again, leading me to shed a few tears of my own. Tears can be a good thing. They can wash away sadness or restore balance in life. They are nothing to be ashamed of. Tears are meant to be shed—that’s why we have them. One memory that makes me shed a few tears is from when our son was a toddler. I was sitting in a chair, crying, and he crawled up on my lap and began to lick my tears from my face. “They taste good,” he said. Guess what? I cried some more. WE

Life Worth Living
The Bluebird of Happiness The Basics of Humanity By Sharon Knierim
Everyone looks for happiness. We spend decades seeking that wonderful feeling of satisfaction. Oddly, most of us are happier than we think. So, really, who is happy? The “happy squad” has been at it again, conducting studies and research. The “lab mice” for this project are mostly adults. The criteria for happiness are varied. Happiness seems elusive. Yet, if we really look around us, there are plenty of reasons for being happy. Score one big point for the near retirement/retirement age group. It’s a closely held secret that older people are actually happier, although few people actually recognize this fact. The latest studies indicate that, while both young adults and older folks believe young people to be happier, it’s the golden olden who really possess the most happiness. What makes us so darned happy? Good health coupled with a steady, predictable income share the number one spot as predictors of true happiness. Oddly enough, it is not the amount of money we make that truly counts. Here’s the scoop: As we age, we often recall early life events the way we want to remember them. We tend to be much happier than life actually treated us early in life. This blessed habit is called “misremembering.” Young adults tend to lack an understanding of how happy they will be as they grow older. Studies now indicate that most people tend to become much happier over time. It seems convoluted that younger people believe that older folks are less happy and that older people believe that they were truly happy when they were younger. This, of course, does not mean that it’s not okay to be happy before the age of 30 or 40. Findings have uncovered why people make decisions such as regularly saving money or smoking or buying a red convertible. At a younger age, actions that affect health and finances later in life seem to be critical. This may also explain the fear of aging that drives a certain number of middle-aged folks to a “mid-life crisis.” Nobody in the history of humankind has ever enjoyed their (or anyone else’s) mid-life crisis, but, like recovering from a serious illness, learning from hard times or adversity seems to bring a sense of happiness to most people. Could it be the sense of accomplishment? Maybe it’s the knowledge of knowing just how lucky we are when things are going well, and when life is tranquil and feels safe. Sometimes it feels that happiness, for most of us, is simply a matter of our own circumstances. If we experience something bad or painful, we’re doomed. Not true! Although it may take years to learn, our underlying emotional resources, faith, and value systems pull us through most of life’s ups and downs. These tools seem to grow with age. Simply put, we seem to get better at managing life’s challenges and gain true peace and happiness as we age. So, how can we allow true joy to become a major part of
18

our lives? The answer is much easier than most of us think. No matter how successful we are in our lives, no matter how big our home or how many cars we drive, joy and happiness seem to be found in the simplicity of life…those essential bits and pieces that make us feel good but also spread among friends, loved ones, and even strangers, allowing them to pick up on our happiness. Maybe happiness is just knowing that we’re human and in touch with the basic feelings of that humanity. After all the dust has cleared from clinical analysis, testing, and research, we have learned what we already knew. Take a look at what the experts have determined. Compare it to what you already knew. 1. Nurture. Plant something green and nurture it. Caregiving seems to be a basic element of being human. It’s deeply seeded in all of us, and nearly everyone responds to the opportunity to care for and help others. 2. Count your blessings. At the end of each day, take a bit of time to count your blessings. Try to count at least five blessings. Most of us can think of 10. 3. Reconnect. Are you missing someone? Pick up the phone and call someone you have not talked to recently. Embarrassingly, many of us haven’t spoken with our old friends for years. Sending an annual Christmas card doesn’t count. Arrange to get together. 4. Talk, talk, talk. Each week, treat yourself to at least one hour of conversation with someone you love or admire. 5. Treat yourself. Allow yourself to something wonderful every day. Give yourself this special time, and don’t rush through it. You deserve the best because you are the best. 6. Laugh. That’s right. Laugh. It’s good for you, and no day should pass into history without laughing. Laughter is life’s best tonic. 7. Exercise. Try to exercise for at least half an hour three or four times a week. Watching yourself exercise in a mirror might bring on that laughter you need! 8. Be kind to strangers. This is contrary to what we teach children, but just smiling or saying hello to a stranger is good for us. You might make someone’s day. It will surely make you feel good. 9. Spread your kindness to others. Like the Boy Scouts, try to do a good deed for someone every day. This kindness will be returned to you manyfold. Remember, there is no key to happiness. That door is always open to you. Be happy! WE

Fresh Concept
Switching Gears in Your Career? Continuing Education for Your Dream Job By Janette Calabro
If you’re a woman considering a career change, you’re not alone. According to recent data, nearly nine out of 10 women contemplate a switch in career direction. There are multiple reasons that women want to change careers. Women may crave new experiences, creative challenges, or the freedom to break away from a nine-to-five job. Most of all, they want a career that’s more than just a paycheck. Women don’t want to settle for less! The National Center for Education (NCES) notes that “female students earned the majority of certificates, associate degrees, and bachelor’s degrees” in the academic year 2015–2016. Education enrollment is expected to increase between the fall of 2018 and the fall of 2027 to 20.5 million. Yep, there’s a good possibility that more education is needed to pursue that new job you’ve been dreaming about. Older women are heading back to school, too, often part-time or in the evenings, and Forbes muses that going back to college after age 50 may be the new normal. Forty percent of women in their 50s or older are transitioning into a new career phase. They’re looking to up-skill for various reasons. Some sidelined their education and careers to start families, some want to stay competitive in the workforce, and some simply enjoy the learning phase. That doesn’t mean the majority are clamoring for ivy-clad colleges for further education—not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s best to take a look at the numerous choices that exist for all women who are gravitating toward a career change and will need further education to do it. To figure that out, we need to look at what kinds of careers women are seeking. Not everyone has the same dream job, and some people will need to continue working while they’re training. For working professionals and students eager to move onto higher-level work quickly, accelerated course studies are designed to be completed quickly with rigorous phases of learning (sometimes called “boot camps”). Accelerated courses, like traditional programs, offer all manner of degrees, from associate to doctorate, but be prepared for short, intensive training. Compare a traditional college course at 16 weeks to an accelerated course, which is compressed into five- to 10-week sessions. You won’t sacrifice quality of knowledge gained, but you may need to spend weekends and evenings on campus. Some schools offer hybrid courses that are partially completed online. Common areas of study in accelerated programs include education, administration, business, liberal arts, and information security. Check admission requirements for each school’s prerequisites. Another option for continuing education is a community college or trade school. Both have an edge in specialized training that a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree might be too broad to address, and they are
20
August 2019
typically lower in cost per credit hour. Community colleges and technical schools (in the same vein as trade schools) generally offer associate degrees (usually two years of education) and certifications in specialties such as fashion or interior design, photography, nursing, veterinary technology, computer technology, even sign language interpretation. The American Association of University Women (AAUW) says that “more women than ever before— upwards of four million—are relying on community college for higher education and workforce preparation.” For example, if you have an interest in becoming an air traffic controller, you’ll likely need a two-year associate degree, not a four-year bachelor’s degree. The median income for ground personnel who radio pilots to direct their aircraft’s direction is an estimated $122,000 annually—not bad for two years of study! If you’re considering a specialty degree but think you might want a bachelor’s degree or higher down the road, check with your school to make sure that your credits will transfer. In fact, it’s best to check with both the school you’re attending and the school you plan to apply to for their specific policies. In some cases, your two-year associate degree or other certification credits can be bridged into a bachelor’s program. Not all credits are transferable, though. Some credits may not work with your new major. When in doubt, check with your school adviser. One of the fastest growing professions in the United States is licensed practical nurse (LPN). As assistants to doctors and registered nurses (RNs), LPNs provide critical care to patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities. It takes about 12 months to become an LPN. Advanced nursing education for RN or higher levels requires substantially more training. The most popular nursing program starts with a twoyear associate degree, followed by a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Courses of study include anatomy, nutrition, chemistry, microbiology, and interpersonal communication. Another popular career switch is into cosmetology, the study of beauty treatment. Education requirements vary from state to state but can usually be completed in a year or two and can include everything from hair and cosmetics to skin and massage therapy to manicures and pedicures. Beauty professionals can branch off into aesthetics,
www.womensedition.com
catering toward a passion for skin care. Education requirements vary by state, but applicants must pass state-approved skin care courses and an aesthetics exam at a cosmetology school or community college in order to practice. Expect four to six months of full-time classes (or about nine to 12 months part-time). This type of education is hands-on combined with academic, usually landing you in a salon or spa environment. There is growing demand for medical aestheticians, which is a type of licensed skin care specialist. The focus is more clinical, in a medical setting. Course studies for medical aestheticians include microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, and facial peels. These techniques require more advanced studies, investing around 600 education hours for licensing. Massage therapists can work in many different environments, from patient rejuvenation in hospitals and clinics to health clubs and chiropractic offices. Again, licensing requirements vary by state, but most require 330 to 1,000 hours. Training in vocational and community schools usually requires an exam before practicing. This profession is physically demanding but rewarding—and be sure to prepare for long hours of standing! It takes about two years to complete a culinary program at a community college or culinary school. For those who want to reach the peak in their profession, it’s best to do more than simply cook—search for an apprenticeship meant to guide you to the top of your appetizing dream. If your goal is to practice law, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree before admission to law school. A Juris Doctor (JD) is a doctoral degree—most full-time students can complete their legal studies for a JD in three years. Check the American Bar Association (ABA) website for specifics regarding the bar exam in your state. Online
courses offer legal training, but you may not be able to earn an ABA-accredited JD online. In some fields, however, online courses can be a great way to meet your educational needs with more flexibility. In January, U.S. News ranked 2019 as the best year for choices of online programs and colleges. That includes advanced education for earning a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree—all while sitting at your home computer, in your pajamas, with a cup of coffee, if you so choose. You can earn a degree in fields like computer science, business, education, or accounting. Even degrees that lead to higher-paying careers such as nuclear or aerospace engineer can be earned online. Employers value online degrees as long as the awarding college is legitimate—they often don’t care whether you listened to lectures in a classroom or in front of your home computer. The decision to go back to school in order to switch careers is a big one! If one of your burning concerns is cost, research scholarships and grants specifically for women returning to college. Scholarships are usually merit-based, while grants are based on financial need. Federal student loans are another option—they have fixed interest rates and are typically less expensive than private loans. If you find you need a break on repayment, student loans offer deferment and forbearance options, along with flexible repayment and even opportunities for loan forgiveness. There are numerous websites that offer help to pay for college. Try oedb.org or studentaid.ed.gov to explore some options. Follow an education plan toward the job you really want, and work won’t feel so much like work! Fine Fireplaces Claxton Does It All
By Jackie Byers
What do you imagine when you hear the name “Claxton”? It can mean many things to many people. If you’re from Norfolk, England, you may think of a nearby medieval castle of that name. If you’re in the United States Navy, you may think of the U.S.S. Claxton that served in World War II. If you’re from Omaha, the name undoubtedly evokes images of glorious fireplaces, and well it should! Dan Claxton has created hot times and cool looks here for over 25 years. Dan is able to create the perfect fireplace for so many satisfied customers because he’s an expert. He really knows fireplaces, from their surrounds to their source of heat and light. In fact, when the Omaha World-Herald needed an expert on fireplace safety, they called Dan. Claxton Fireplace works in living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, family rooms, dens, dining rooms, and offices. Outside, their work can be seen on decks, patios, and even poolside. Dan’s fireplaces add warmth, charm, elegance, and comfort. They help your place put its best look forward. If you’re building a new home, Dan will help you choose among the wide array of finishes. “We do many finishes, including stone, tile, slate, granite, marble, stainless steel, stucco, mirrors, glass, and wood,” Dan shares. “We also do the surrounds.” Those can consist of open shelving, cabinetry, or complementary wall treatments. If you already have a great fireplace and surround, Dan will show you how you can update it with a gas log insert or fire glass. The Claxton Fireplace team also knows chimney work, including mini-camera internal inspections, masonry repair, reconstruction, flue relining, tuck pointing, crown replacement, and even chimney sweeping. If your fire desires are more about fresh air and barbecue, Claxton Fireplace has great outdoor designs. They offer a wide variety of fiery products that come in many brands, shapes, and sizes. A grill may be a perfect centerpiece for an outdoor kitchen. Free-standing or in-ground fire pits go well on a deck, patio, or pool surround. They offer light, heat, and beauty. Consider the advantages of a patio heater specially designed to suit your space—you could convert your summer patio into a place to enjoy three seasons of the year!
Outdoor space at your office may be just right for a complete kitchen or a grill with seating that your employees and clients can enjoy. When you don’t want the work crowd at your home, throw the party at the office! While you’re considering how to heat things up, it’s also important to consider how to keep things cool. A bit of shade always helps! Whether you’re looking to improve an outdoor space at home or at the office, solar shades work quite well. Retractable deck and patio awnings with 21st-century remote control provide instant shade and cool. Online reviews of the work done by the team at Claxton Fireplace are numerous and glowing. They describe in detail just how satisfied their clients are with every aspect of the work done on their projects. “Dan was very knowledgeable, designing a stone electric corner fireplace,” says one reviewer. “Electric flame is very realistic.” Another satisfied customer notes that “Scott did a great job with the stone and cleaned up after.” A local professional reviewer gave Claxton Fireplace five stars. Dan is quoted on the website with what is probably one of his favorite things to say, always with a bit of a grin: “We have answers for all your burning questions.” It’s true! Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine Real Solutions for Infertility
By Marge Shoemaker
Established since 2000, Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine (HCRM) is a comprehensive facility for the treatment of reproductive disorders. As a group of three, Dr. Victoria Maclin (medical director), Dr. Stephanie Gustin, and Dr. Elizabeth Constance work collaboratively to provide individualized, patient-centered reproductive care. Dr. Gustin was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, in a family with “science careers” in their background. “I’ve known since I was in my middle teens that I wanted to be a doctor,” Dr. Gustin says. In medical school, Dr. Gustin found OB-GYN to be the perfect cadence of clinic visits and patient continuity, of office procedures and surgery. Dr. Gustin relates an outstanding moment in her training, when she met a young woman born without a uterus and vagina. Through vaginal dilators, the patient was able to create a functional vagina, but without a uterus, she lacked the ability to carry a pregnancy. The discussion of utilization of in vitro fertilization (taking her eggs and her partners sperm to make embryos), in combination with the use of a gestational carrier or even the possibility to one day consider uterine transplant, inspired Dr. Gustin to pursue a career in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. HCRM accepts both male and female patients, as 40 percent of couples who struggle with infertility have both a male and female component. “Our staff members facilitate an evidenced-based evaluation to understand the etiology of infertility for each couple,” says Dr. Gustin. Despite such evaluations, the most common diagnosis is “unexplained infertility,” where they are unable to pinpoint the exact cause of a couple’s struggle. “Our goal at HCRM is to empower patients with knowledge and understanding regarding their reproduction and to assist them in their procreative efforts in a way that aligns with their individual goals and needs.” Their list of clients (and their clients’ treatment needs) varies widely. Clients may be young women, just entering puberty, who are experiencing menstrual problems that may affect their child-bearing capabilities later on. Some patients are undergoing necessary medical treatments that may render them sterile, so they want to preserve their eggs for the future. Some patients who are going through gender transition want to maintain their reproductive ability. Some couples are “just not ready to have children right now” but want to ensure the possibility for “when the time is right.” Fertility medications are the primary treatment for women with ovulation disorders, stimulating hormones which then trigger the release of eggs. Egg freezing is an option for women who want to ensure they will have healthy eggs available later in life, when they are more ready to have children. There are several procedures available for use in treating infertility, ranging from utilizing fertility

medications to induce ovulation with or without intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). With intrauterine insemination, the female patient typically takes fertility medications to ovulate somewhere between one and four oocytes (eggs). Just prior to ovulation, sperm that has been washed and concentrated is placed inside the uterus to increase the number of sperm available for fertilization. Unlike IUI, IVF allows a stimulation of multiple oocytes, which are then retrieved surgically from the body and fertilized in the IVF laboratory. The process of fertilization, including the use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) for couples with male factor infertility, followed by embryo culture to the blastocyst stage, is all done within the laboratory. Once a blastocyst, the embryo (or embryos) can be transferred back into the uterus or can be further tested prior to cryopreserving. Everyone at HCRM is excited for their couples with treatment successes. While they love meeting the babies they helped make possible, they are sensitive to the anguish that some patients experience when they can’t conceive. “We walk this journey, both the highs and the lows, with our patients,” says Dr. Gustin. “That is why we collaborate with Lotus House of Yoga to co-host a quarterly Yoga for Fertility event, as well as places such as Omaha Integrative Medicine and Thirteen Moons, to provide patients with additional resources for emotional, physical, and spiritual support throughout their infertility journey.” When asked what she wishes she could change about her practice, Dr. Gustin replies, “Despite the fact that infertility is considered a disease, there is inadequate insurance coverage for couples struggling with infertility. More recently, businesses are beginning to include infertility benefits, but at least one third of our patients have no coverage, which prevents access to care. This issue has been, and will continue to be, brought to our Nebraska Legislature. At HCRM, we believe all patients/ couples should have access to reproductive assistance.” Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine is located at 7308 South 142nd Street, in Omaha. They are online at heartlandfertility.com. You can reach them by phone at 402-717-4200 or 877-831-3227. To increase accessibility for residents outside the Omaha area, they have established outreach clinics in Sioux City, Iowa, and Hastings, Nebraska. WE

Permanent Makeup Put Your Best Face Forward
By Loretta McCollum
“Every day, she takes a morning bath, she wets her hair. Wraps a towel around her as she’s heading for the bedroom chair. It’s just another day. Slipping into stockings, stepping into shoes…It’s just another day.” Paul McCartney wrote those lyrics nearly 50 years ago, but they still ring true. We could easily add, “strokes on the shadow, then she lengthens up the lashes. Smooths on the powder and she brightens up the lips. It’s just another day.” We all want to look our best, and most of us use makeup to cover what we consider our flaws and imperfections, to even out skin tone, or to add a little color. The problem is that putting on makeup takes so much of our precious time. What if you could have the polished look you want without spending any time with lip liners, brow pencils, mascara, eyeliner, and lipstick? Would you sleep a little longer? Would you have an extra cup of coffee? Would you finally have the time to exercise or meditate before you start your day? If any of those sound good to you, you should know that there are options out there that would allow you to do just that! I’m talking about permanent makeup, which can be a great way to restore a natural look and boost self-esteem. These processes and techniques are great for people with medical conditions like alopecia (hair loss on many parts of the body) that can lead to a lot of

makeup prep time. They’re also a boon for people who have recently undergone reconstructive surgery and need a little help to look and feel like themselves again. Permanent makeup is also an advantage for people who just want to maintain a polished look without all the hassle of applying makeup in the morning and reapplying it throughout the day. So, what is permanent makeup, and is it really permanent? Permanent makeup application is a lot like getting a tattoo. Needles or rotary pen-like devices are used by licensed aestheticians or other trained professionals to insert pigment into the skin. An added plus is that there is not really any downtime. The results are not as long-lasting as a traditional tattoo, but the makeup will last up to five years with proper care, depending on the area of the application and the level of pigmentation applied. Occasional touch-ups may be needed. You can increase its longevity ›››

by always applying sunscreen and wearing sunglasses, as sun exposure will fade the color. Avoid exfoliating skin products, particularly on the lips. One of the most popular permanent makeup choices is eyeliner. We all know how difficult it can be to get that perfect outline with a liquid or pencil liner. Even if we’re lucky enough to avoid poking ourselves in the eye, we often end up with one eye that looks like we used a black magic marker on it and one eye that looks like it was marked with a fine point pen. With permanent eyeliner, you can choose a bold or a more natural look. A procedure known as “tightlining” adds pigment between the layers of lashes to darken the lash line. It looks very natural. The more traditional application, above the lash line, resembles liquid liner. Either procedure takes one or two hours, and you should avoid applying eye makeup and mascara for one week afterwards. To achieve the perfect brow, some of us turn to tweezers, pencils, or both. Many times, we end up with an exaggerated arch, making us look perpetually surprised. Microblading can give you a perfectly shaped brow. A tiny blade creates slices in the skin and deposits pigment. Individuals who have undergone treatments resulting in hair loss often take advantage of microblading. Let’s talk lips. You line and define, then fill in with the perfect color, only to realize that a few sips of wine and a couple bites of steak later, you’re left with naked lips. Enter lip tattooing, a process in which a tool resembling a hand-held rotary pen injects pigment into the lips. Since lips are particularly sensitive, this procedure can be somewhat painful; topical numbing cream is applied prior to the procedure. The lips will typically appear quite dark at first, but the color will fade to a more natural look. Expect some swelling and chapping for the first few days following the procedure. Since the lips receive more wear and tear than other areas, results typically last only about 18 months. If permanent makeup sounds like a dream come true, ask your dermatologist about it. Some dermatologists do these procedures themselves; if yours doesn’t, ask for a recommendation for a cosmetologist or aesthetician who has been trained in the art of permanent makeup. Let the pros guide you through the process of putting your best face forward, any time of night or day. Sources for this article included: webmd. com, today.com, and permanent-line.com. WE

Disconnect to Reconnect It’s Time! Just for fun, let’s all try an experiment. The next time you meet friends for dinner, have everyone agree to leave their cell phones in the car. My best guess is that you will get objections. “I have to be available for the spouse/kids/grandkids/aging parents.” “I don’t agree on spending time with someone who is more attached to his cell phone than he is to me.” —Mohamed Ghazi, “Honest” Solution? Give them the name and phone number of the restaurant where you are going to be eating. Restaurants still have landlines! Explain to your own spouse/kids/grandkids/aging parents that you are doing an experiment to judge the quality of the evening by removing one of the biggest distractors out there… our phones. “Making sensible family rules around cell phones and driving is a way to love yourself, your marriage, your children, and the world well.” —Glennon Doyle Melton Sometimes I feel as if the world has gone a little bit mad. truth to it, but the challenge is that human beings are becoming disconnected from one another at a remarkably rapid pace. “Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense.” —Gertrude Stein, novelist and poet A few years back, I was at a beautiful restaurant, on the beach, in Aruba. The stars were twinkling, the weather was perfect, and the food was top notch. I remember looking around to appreciate the night, to appreciate how incredibly fortunate I was. Then I saw a table that made me sad. There was a family—mother, father, and two teenage sons. They were not appreciating the beauty of the moment. They were all looking down at their phones. Not looking at one another, not talking, not staring at the stars. Even when their food came, they each ate with one hand and had the other hand on the phone. Wow. At that moment, I recognized how disconnected our phones have made us become…and it has only gotten worse. I admit that, at times, I am as guilty of this as everyone else is. It’s time to reconnect with those that we love. Next dinner out, I’m going to revisit my experiment. The first time I tried it, I was amazed at how much more connected I felt to the people I was with! Give it a try, and let me know how it goes! Email me at: publisher@wew3.com. WE

Adulting What Does It Mean? Recently, I came across the sentence, “Adulting is hard.” I initially thought it meant that being an adult is difficult, which it often is. Then I met the term in an essay regarding young adults not having the requisite skills to live on their own. This made me reconsider my original definition. Still another meeting suggested that the term referred to not acting with courtesy, civility, or care when dealing with others. After pondering this term for several weeks, I decided to ask the girls the next time we met. At first, they felt that it referred to the basic skills most of us learned either in home economics or from our mothers. Janie said she tried to teach her kids basic cooking. “I started supervising small tasks when they were little, like following a simple recipe and measuring ingredients, then planning a shopping list,” she recalled. “I feel safer with them using the microwave than using the stove.” Suzy reported teaching her kids to sew on missing buttons or merit badges. “They learned how to thread a needle and sew basic stitches without constantly pricking their fingers…they didn’t even use a thimble,” she said. Marie wondered about kids who didn’t know how to do basic maintenance when they borrowed the car. “Daddy made sure I could pump gas and use the air hose,” Judy reminisced. She then added with a smile, “That came in handy a couple

of times. He’d never have let me use the car again if he had to rescue me and my friends because I forgot.” Barb reminded us that some kids don’t know how to operate the dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, or washer and dryer. “If they can’t take care of those things, they shouldn’t be living on their own,” she insisted. We also talked about the necessity of teaching our kids problem-solving skills. “I tried to teach my kids to be polite,” Donna commented. “Asking someone to do something and then showing gratitude means a lot. ‘Please’ and ‘thank you’ don’t cost a thing.” Carole remarked on the lack of civility in society. “I hate it when name-calling takes the place of discussion when there’s a difference of opinion. It only escalates the problem!” she insisted emphatically. We all agreed that “adulting” has many connotations. Basically, all people, male and female, young and old, should know how to take care of themselves by cooking and cleaning, making small repairs, and using basic tools if they are to survive on their own. They need problem-solving skills in all sorts of conditions, and they need to know how to solve differences with civility. They need to use their manners, show concern for others, and accept responsibility for their actions and reactions. In short, we decided that “adulting” means being an adult, and it includes all that that implies. What do you think? WE

Designer Floors Functional and Fashionable Flooring
By Robyn V. Powell
Whether you’re building a new home or planning a remodel, one of the most important decisions is your choice of flooring. Just how important is flooring? According to designers, floors not only provide the functional foundation of any space, they set the design tone for the entire home. Thanks to technology, homeowners have more flooring choices than ever before, with design options to suit every lifestyle and budget. Flooring styles and materials have undergone a major evolution in recent years, and 2019 delivers with even more exciting trends. With so many options, choosing the right floor can be overwhelming. Exploring the most popular options can narrow your choices and help you find the flooring product that makes the best sense for your home. Flooring manufacturers across the board are replicating the look and feel of natural wood and stone in 2019. Solid wood has been the classic choice of homeowners for generations. However, for active families, homes with pets, or rooms with high levels of moisture, hardwood hasn’t always been a viable option. Technology now allows manufacturers to replicate the look of natural wood directly onto tiles in a very realistic way. Ceramic and porcelain tiles provide gorgeous options that rival the good looks of solid wood while easily holding up to the highest traffic and wettest environments. These tiles offer homeowners the best of all worlds, emulating the warm, comfortable look of natural hardwood while

providing the functional advantages of tile. As an added bonus, tile requires little to no maintenance and is simple to keep clean. Though classic stone floors have always been well-loved, the high price point of natural stone has meant classic stone floors weren’t accessible for everyone. Once again, technology has saved the day, allowing homeowners to achieve the beautiful look of natural stone without the hefty price tag. Manufacturers have recognized the desirability of luxurious stone, so expect to see lots of marble-look ceramic tile in 2019. Ceramic and porcelain tile allow homeowners to enjoy all the benefits of beautiful stone at a fraction of the cost and with little to no maintenance. Hardworking tile is extremely pet-friendly, cleans up easily, resists scratches, and won’t retain odors. For those with a more minimalist style, ceramic tiles that look like slate offer clean, natural, and edgy styling. Tiles continue to get ›››

larger. We’ve been seeing lots of 12x24-inch tile, but we should expect to see tiles go even bigger, including large format slabs. Shapes are evolving, too, with mosaics, hexagons, and scallops personalizing spaces and adding visual interest. For those accustomed to seeing plain concrete slabs serve as flooring for basements, garages, and patios, discovering that concrete floors are a popular and viable choice for the modern home interior may come as a surprise. If the thought of putting a sidewalk in as the floor of your house repels you, don’t write it off too quickly. Concrete works with a lot of design aesthetics and can be customized with polished, etched, or even stained finishes. Distressed concrete goes through a process to minimize the highly polished look and produce a worn, soft patina that works beautifully in contemporary or industrial-styled homes. Among concrete’s benefits are durability and ease of maintenance. The downside of concrete floors is that the very same unyielding hardness that makes them so durable can be uncomfortable to stand on for long periods of time. One way to offset the hardness is with the placement of area rugs. Concrete can also feel cold underfoot and is often installed in conjunction with radiant heat. Carpet remains a popular flooring choice. Like a favorite sweater, carpet is cozy, comfortable, and practical. Because carpet fibers hold heat, carpet has an insulating quality that can lower energy costs better than any other flooring. Carpet now comes in tons of fun colors and textures; the variety of color, pattern, and texture makes it possible to fit almost any design style. Carpet is quiet to walk on, durable, and non-slip, making it a great overall value. Consumers want a high-performance, stylish carpeting product to complement their personal and curated interiors and are demanding both design and function at a variety of price points. More manufacturers are offering beautiful styling paired with features like waterproof backing that make sense for consumers with even the most active lifestyles. The flooring in your home is something you will see and walk on every single day. Before making your flooring decisions, it’s best to view and touch flooring samples in real life, not just online. Visit flooring stores or interior design studios to experience the wide array of beautiful choices. You’re sure to find flooring that you will love. Lifetime of Laughter
Back To School Here We Go Again! By Sharon Knierim
When we were children on the farm a long time ago, August was viewed as the saddest month of the year. Although we generally liked going to school, the return to books and wearing shoes every day seemed something like donning a straightjacket. We were expected to wear frilly dresses, and starchy white blouses, and white socks. It’s not that we were absolutely uncivilized at home, but there was a certain beauty in the freedom of living in a farmhouse with the windows wide open. Doors were generally thrown open, too, with only the screen doors separating us from the flies and other outdoor critters. Our home (and everyone else’s home) was filled with visiting relatives and old friends who we hadn’t seen in a very long time. The kitchen seemed to be open 24-7. At night, all the beds and couches were filled! During the summer months, we replaced school chums with newborn litters of kittens who played between sweet-smelling bales of hay in the barn. But during the long hot days of August, we knew that we would soon abandon our daily playtime with those kittens and replace our old shorts and tee shirts with more formal apparel. To this day, the smell of newly purchased school supplies makes me feel a bit sick to my stomach. It was probably the pencils being sharpened that really set me into mourning over the loss of those endless summer days of freedom. Feeling new tight shoes and bobby socks on my feet was revolting. Don’t get me wrong—we didn’t run around like a bunch of naked hooligans during the summer, but the rules of dress and decorum were definitely more relaxed between May and August. As preparations to return to school loomed over us, we knew we would be expected to sit in a seat for nine months and eat lunches not prepared by our own mothers, or aunts, or neighbor ladies, who always fed us their specialties. Thankfully, most children were excited about learning. School, of course, offered the opportunity to gain more knowledge under the tutelage of adults who guided us through all the subjects and information we would need later in our lives. So, at the end of each August, we boarded the school bus, and it carried us off to town, and we learned. We knew there would be other summers. In just a few short months, we would cast aside our shoes and socks. We would hang up those starchy dresses and scratchy petticoats, forgetting we had ever seen them. Rigid schedules and textbooks would be replaced by outdoor exploring and pretending to be the Lone Ranger, Brenda Starr, or maybe the occasional Wonder Woman. But always…always, there would be another summer. When my own children became students, August

remained a truly sad month for me. During the summer months, we could eat pancakes at 10 a.m. if we chose to, or we could wear our swimming suits all day long. There were no schedules, and demands were few. Just as in my own childhood, however, August signaled the time to begin school shopping. New school wardrobes were required. Those foul-smelling school supplies needed to be secured. Haircuts all around meant a trip to the beauty shop and another trip to the barber shop. Our children, who grew up in an urban area and kept up with their school mates throughout the summer, probably experienced an easier transition from summer vacation into the rigors of school days. In fact, they seemed to look forward to getting back into their old routine. Thinking back on those times, it may have been a relief for them to escape the day-in and day-out of their mother’s companionship! In all honesty, we did hold our children closer than our folks had done. Unwittingly, I may have been trying to live vicariously through the children and accidentally thwarted their sense of summer freedom. The first day of school for our children was always a tough time for their mother. I would walk them to school and hang around for opening ceremonies. Long after other mothers had abandoned this practice, considering their children mature enough to handle this formality on their own, I insisted on hanging in there. Over the years, this habit turned into something of a self-torture scheme. Returning home alone, I cried so hard that I could hardly find my next step. Passersby probably figured it was just Sharon, walking back from the first day of school ceremonies, sad that she had once again lost her summer playmates. WE

Countertops and Backsplashes Do Your Kitchen and Bathroom Need a Lift?
By Anne Yankus
Now that summer is winding down, it’s time to start thinking about projects for the interior of your home. What better way to spruce up your kitchen or bathroom than installing a new countertop or backsplash? Today’s countertops come in more different materials than ever before. Ranging from the many affordable laminate designs to pricier concrete or recycled glass, there’s something out there for every style and budget. The most popular designs this year have been quartz countertops (toppling the previously popular granite), honed leather finish (a matte finish that can be applied to any stone), and neutral tones. All options have their pros and cons, so let’s start with a brief description of the most popular options on the market: laminate, granite or quartz, bamboo or butcher block, concrete, and recycled glass. Laminate is the least expensive option on the market, and it comes in the widest range of designs and styles. Laminate also has the benefit of installation right on top of some existing countertops. When installed properly, laminate can be long-lasting and is resistant to heat and staining. It is, however, quite vulnerable to cuts and abrasions. Quartz and granite are mid-range price alternatives, and you get what you pay for. Quartz and granite are completely resistant to heat, cuts, and scratching, though granite is vulnerable to chipping corners. Granite also needs regular sealing to help with stains, while
quartz requires little to no maintenance. Since both options are natural stone, each countertop is completely unique in design. Bamboo and butcher block cost about the same amount as granite or quartz but lack their sturdiness. Bamboo looks nice and brings a warm color to your decor, but it’s easily damaged, vulnerable to moisture, and needs regular applications of mineral oil or beeswax. Butcher block is more resistant to stains when varnished or more resistant to heat when oil-finished, but it’s never resistant to both. Like bamboo, it’s also vulnerable to water, which means it would only work for partial coverage in a kitchen setting and wouldn’t make sense in a bathroom. You might guess that concrete is cheap, since you see it everywhere. However, because each concrete countertop is customformed, it’s actually one of the most expensive options. Depending on who has installed it, the quality can vary widely, and it’s ›››

vulnerable to chips and scratches. Concrete can be sealed to protect against either stains or heat but not both (its protection depends on the sealant). It will need periodic resealing. Recycled glass is expensive but can give you a very unique aesthetic. Large shards create a bold look, whereas finer particles of ground glass can create a subtle effect. It’s resistant to heat, cuts, and scratches, but it’s vulnerable to stains. Of course, the countertop is only half the equation. You may also want to consider updating your backsplash. While choosing countertop materials and designs, you’re generally limited by at least some need for functionality. Backsplashes are where you can really let your creativity shine! Laminate and ceramic tiles are generally the most popular picks for backsplash materials, but there’s a lot that can be accomplished with simple tiles. One popular design choice is ceiling-height backsplashes. This can create a unified look between your counters and your cabinetry. Subway tiles have been popular for several years now, but homeowners these days have been going for larger sizes than the standard 3x6 inches. Mirrored or metallic finishes are making a splash by bringing some brightness to otherwise neutral kitchens. In that vein, where countertops are going for more neutrals, backsplashes are trending toward vibrant colors and eye-popping patterns. Before you start tearing out your old kitchen or bathroom to re-invent them with new counters and backsplashes, consider hiring a professional installer, instead. It’s easy to accidentally damage your walls or cabinets when you’re removing old countertops and backsplashes. Many materials, like granite, quartz, and concrete, need specialized preparation before they can be installed. If you’re already working with an interior designer, your designer may have an installer to suggest. If not, ask around for recommendations from friends who have had work done recently or other professionals in the field. Once you’ve gotten a couple of recommendations, set up interviews, get a written estimate from each one, and follow your gut from there. Whether you want a more resilient material to better suit your needs or you just want to update the look of your kitchen or bathroom, replacing your countertop and backsplash can be a great way to get the job done! Helping Families Grow Infertility Treatments for Couples
By Leslie Byrne
When you find yourself unable to conceive, it’s common to feel very alone. It seems like no one else is going through the same thing and like there’s no hope for your dreams of a family. In reality, infertility is more common than you might think, and there are many ways that modern medicine can help you conceive a child. You’re not alone! The term “infertility” has a specific medical definition, and that’s a good place to start. When a woman younger than 35 years is unable to become pregnant after a full year of having intercourse without birth control, she is considered to have infertility issues. For women 35 and older, the length of time drops down to only six months of unprotected sex. Out of 100 couples, 12–13 will have difficulty conceiving. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 6.1 million American women between the ages of 15 and 44 years will have difficulty becoming (or staying) pregnant. That’s about 10 out of 100 American women, so it is pretty common. Female infertility is most often caused by ovulation problems—if you don’t ovulate, you can’t get pregnant. Many ovulation problems are due to hormone imbalance. Another common cause is blocked fallopian tubes. Uterine fibroids, which are non-cancerous tumors that develop in the walls of the uterus, can also cause infertility. Being older than 30, smoking, heavy drinking, poor diet, diabetes,

stress, or too much athletic training can all decrease a woman’s chances of conceiving. Being extremely underweight or overweight; having a history of sexually transmitted diseases, endometriosis, or thyroid problems; or having undergone radiation or chemotherapy can also decrease a woman’s chances of getting pregnant. Of course, infertility problems are not just for women. About one third of fertility issues are associated with the male half of the couple. (Another third is associated with the woman, and the final third includes cases in which both the man and the woman have infertility issues or the source of the problem cannot be determined.) In men, the common causes of infertility include erectile dysfunction and varicocele, which is when the veins in the scrotum become enlarged and may damage the sperm. Low sperm count and blocked tubes can also be infertility issues for men. A man’s fertility can be affected by many of the same factors as
www.womensedition.com
women, like age over 40 years, smoking, diabetes, or heavy alcohol use. Steroid use, as well as radiation or chemotherapy treatment, can also adversely affect a man’s fertility. For both men and women, testing to find the cause of infertility starts with a physical exam and a full review of medical history. For men, a semen analysis is usually ordered. For women, tests include a pelvic exam and blood tests to check hormone levels and to learn when ovulation occurs. The fallopian tubes are examined to ensure there is no blockage. This can be done with specialized x-rays or with a laparoscopic camera. To view the uterus, a transvaginal ultrasound or hysteroscopy (camera in the uterus) may be indicated. Once the cause of infertility is determined, the most common remedies include medications and surgery. Fertility medications work like normal hormones to increase ovulation and can be taken orally or by injection. The success rates for these medications vary but generally help increase fertility by 25–50 percent. The potential risks of some fertility drugs include ovarian issues (including tumors) or pregnancies with multiple babies, which bring their own risks. Some women may benefit from surgery to correct a physical problem that is preventing conception. Other options include in vitro fertilization (eggs are fertilized outside the body and subsequently implanted) and egg freezing (eggs are harvested and frozen for later use). Lifestyle changes often help with infertility. Eating a healthier diet, quitting smoking, cutting down on alcohol, increasing exercise, and decreasing stress can help overcome some causes of fertility (not to mention improving your health overall). Alternative medications can include herbs and supplements. Be sure to keep track of any lifestyle changes you’ve made so you can share them with your healthcare team. Reproductive endocrinologists specialize in fertility and are trained in using treatments like in vitro fertilization and egg freezing. Start with your primary care physician or gynecologist. Ask for a recommendation for an endocrinologist or a fertility clinic that focuses solely on helping people become parents. You can check out the CDC’s federal database of success rates at various clinics online at cdc.gov/art/artdata. If you’re struggling to conceive, don’t wait—ask your doctor how today’s solutions may lead you to the family you’ve dreamed of having. An Inside Look
Clip n’ Go Pro Pet Grooming at Your Front Door By Marge Shoemaker
Taking a child to the dentist or hairdresser can be a hassle. Taking more than one at the same time is a definite chore…especially when they’re young. It’s normal for kids to dread trips to places where strange noises, smells, and surroundings are often intimidating. Those of us who have furry, four-legged members in our families know that everything I’ve just said about kids is also true of our dogs! Bill Martens is a man who sees a need and tries to fill it. Bill has three dogs: two shih tzus (Little Boy and Keno) and a chihuahua (Mr. Happy). Even though his dogs are small, Bill found it a chore getting them to a groomer. “Taking them one at a time was time-consuming,” he recalls. “Wrangling all three at once posed a definite challenge!” His own frustrating experience seeded the idea of rigging a van and having a qualified groomer go to the customer. His idea came to fruition in October of 2016, when he founded Clip n’ Go. “Mobile pet care is a convenient service for people who have multiple dogs, for senior citizens, for people with disabilities, for busy professionals—even for people who simply don’t drive,” Bill notes. It’s also great for pets who don’t like to travel. We’ve all seen dogs balk at getting in a car, usually because it’s associated with a previous unpleasant experience. “Mobile grooming allows the dog to stay in a familiar setting,” Bill explains. “It’s less stressful for everyone involved.” That familiarity is why he’s glad that talented groomer Maria Palacio has been with him from the beginning. “Maria is particular about her work,” he asserts. “Her clients are all special to her.” When dogs roll on the ground or lick and chew their fur, they are trying to keep clean. To maintain a healthy coat, they need a little help—and that’s where regular dog grooming comes in. Bill advises professional grooming about every six weeks. Regular brushing spreads natural oils, removes dirt, prevents tangles, and keeps skin clean and irritant-free. Brushing also helps with shedding, which is a normal process for dogs. (The amount of shedding depends on health, breed, and season.) Regular bathing can forestall skin problems. A dog’s skin condition is an indication of overall health. Skin problems, often indicated by excessive scratching, chewing, or licking, can have a wide range of causes. External parasites, infections, allergies, metabolic problems, stress, or a combination of these may be to blame. Grooming time is also an excellent time to check for fleas and other pests. Just as human babies need regular checkups, our pets need regular care for their teeth, eyes, and ears. Getting your dog’s teeth brushed on a regular basis keeps the whole mouth healthy. As in humans, bacteria and plaque-forming foods may cause an unhealthy
48
August 2019
buildup of tartar in a dog’s mouth, which can lead to gum disease and tooth loss. Regular mouth cleaning also helps keep your dog’s breath more pleasant. Maria will check your dog’s eyes during each grooming session, as well. Tearing, cloudiness, inflammation, or excessive discharge may indicate a health problem. Regular ear checks are important for dogs who produce excessive earwax or have a lot of inner-ear hair. Non-professional attendance to these problems may cause injury or make a problem worse. “Our groomers always alert the owner to any problems they find,” Bill assures us. “We’re groomers, not veterinarians. We’ll send you to a vet when necessary.” Paw care is also vital for happy, healthy dogs. Paw pads cushion and protect bones and joints from shock. They provide insulation in cold weather, aid walking on rough surfaces, and protect the paw tissue. Regular inspections guard against wounds, infections, or foreign objects that may become lodged between a dog’s toes. Nails should be trimmed regularly before they touch the ground or get snagged. The paws of pampered indoor pets may require more nail attention than pups who often play outdoors or run on hard surfaces. Bill knows how particular pet owners can be about their pooches—after all, he has three dogs of his own! Bill looks for groomers who truly love animals, are particular about the job they do, and will spend the time needed to make each dog’s visit a happy one. It’s just what we expect from the hairdressers who cut our own hair, Bill notes. “We don’t want someone working on us doing a rush job and making mistakes. If Maria takes a longer-than-average time grooming a client, I know it’s for a good reason,” he says proudly. “Grooming is hard but rewarding work!” Clip n’ Go can be found online at clipngoomaha.net. If you think bringing your dog’s groomer right to your door would make life easier for you and your dog, call 402-669-6876 to make an appointment. WE

How Many Baskets?
Your Parents Were Partially Correct
By George Morgan
As a child, do you remember your parents saying, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket?” I do, but I don’t remember the context in which it was said. The message this phrase is trying to convey is that having a single plan or approach is risky. If you put all your eggs in one basket and drop it, you will lose everything. The financial term for this approach is called diversification. The concept of diversification seems to make good sense; however, the devil is in the details. The world is a risky place, and many people consider the stock market to be the poster child for risk. Diversification is a way of capturing some of the rewards of the stock market without taking on undue risk. The academic world has devoted a significant amount of time and effort to developing guidelines for achieving diversification. The simplest diversification approach applies to situations where the investor owns individual stocks. Intuitively, if you do put all your money in one stock, you have the possibility that the company will fail and you will lose everything. (Don’t tell this to the original Buffett shareholders.) Common sense tells us that by adding a few more stocks to the portfolio, we reduce our risk because the probability of all our companies going bankrupt is less than the probability of one company going bankrupt. Well, if more is good, does that imply that the optimal solution is to add as many stocks as possible? The findings of the academics is NO! Years of analysis and back testing has shown that, once a portfolio reaches around 20 stocks, adding more stocks does nothing to reduce the total risk of the portfolio. Once you have achieved that level the only thing adding more stocks will do is increase transaction costs. The above results are based upon the fact that the stocks were chosen at random. Let’s take our diversification discussion one step further and add stocks to the portfolio from different industrial sectors. The assumption here is that, if the companies in one business sector falter, those in others might prosper or at best not decline in value. The ability to predict which industrial sectors will prosper and which will decline is not a prerequisite. The probability of all industrial sectors performing in a like fashion is quite low. The most likely outcome is that some sectors will do better than others. This approach is ideally suited for the faint of heart; it will not enhance performance, but it will reduce volatility during times of market stress. The next step up the diversification ladder is called asset allocation. Here, instead of adding more stocks to the portfolio or financial basket, we add financial instruments with different characteristics than stocks. These could include bonds, some form of real estate, or commodities such as gold or agricultural products. Again, the assumption is that these differing financial assets will respond to changing economic conditions in different ways. Historically, when the stock market
50
August 2019
declines, bonds tend to outperform stocks and vice versa. This approach seems to make sense. However, during the subprime crisis of 2007 and 2008, the severity of the damage to our banking sector caused all financial assets to drop significantly in value. The majority of Americans who participate in the stock market do so through the use of mutual funds in their 401(k)s. The reason they choose mutual funds is because for the majority of them, that is their only option. This adds another wrinkle to our diversification discussion. Many investors apply the diversification rule to mean that one mutual fund represents one egg; thus, in order to be diversified, they need to have multiple mutual funds. The average mutual fund contains in the neighborhood of 200 stocks. Going back to our discussion of owning individual stocks, this means that the average mutual fund is more than diversified. However, this analysis is valid only in a case when the mutual funds are similar in investment approach. Here we can apply the same logic as we did when diversified, by adding different financial assets through asset allocation. Those who are faint of heart can put some of their assets in a bond fund or a foreign fund. Again, all the funds will not perform in an identical fashion and the most likely result is that this approach will reduce the volatility of the asset base. Most Americans who own stock are in a 401(k) program, where the advice they receive and their investment choices are limited. A basic understanding of what diversification is and how to achieve it is a valuable tool. They also need to know that diversification will not enhance performance; rather, it is important because it reduces volatility. Bottom line: Your parents were partially correct. Diversification can reduce the possibility of loss, but it cannot eliminate it. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years of experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves as the executive director of the Buttonwood Center for Investor Education, and as an adjunct professor of finance at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Oh, My Aching Head! Getting Help for Serious Headaches
By Linda Barnes
You’d be hard pressed to find a person who does not experience the occasional headache. Infrequent, moderate headaches will often respond to over-the-counter medication and do not interfere greatly with our everyday lives. Chronic head pain or migraine headaches are a different story. The most common type of headache is the tension headache. Migraine headache is more debilitating but less common—18 percent of us will experience migraines, with women more than twice as likely as men to have them. If headache interferes with your daily activities, it is time to get some professional guidance. Migraines are frequently described as intense, throbbing pain, often on one side. Besides pain, symptoms may include nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. They can occur on a regular basis or more rarely. The cause of migraines is not fully understood, but certain triggers are commonly recognized. These include too much or too little sleep, hormonal changes, alcohol, skipped meals, stress, weather, caffeine, light, noise, certain odors, and some food additives. Most researchers believe that migraines result when changes in natural substances in the brain cause inflammation and swelling. Different types of prescriptions are available to treat migraine— those that you take when a migraine starts and those that you take on a daily basis to reduce the frequency or severity of headaches. Botox injections are FDA-approved for chronic migraine (that
is, headaches on more than 15 days per month) and work by interrupting the pain transmission process in the brain. At the other end of the spectrum are tension headaches, which typically involve milder pain than migraines. However, they can be debilitating if they become chronic. The pain is often described as involving both sides of the head and feeling like a tight band or vice is surrounding the head. The pain usually doesn’t worsen with physical activity, so people are often able to continue with their daily pursuits. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient to treat occasional tension headaches, but if they become frequent or long-lasting, chronic tension headaches may require prescription medications to prevent or ease the pain and avoid the disruption to your daily life. Non-medical treatments might include biofeedback, relaxation techniques, acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic adjustments, or physical therapy. Since stress and anxiety are often

at the root of tension headaches, cognitive behavioral therapy may be indicated, as well. A concern regarding chronic tension headaches is that frequent use of over-thecounter pain relievers can have negative effects on the stomach, kidneys, liver, and other organs. Since anxiety causes muscle tension and tension contributes to headache, strategies to reduce anxiety and tension can help. Biofeedback uses electrodes on the skin to help you recognize areas of tension so those areas can be intentionally relaxed. Anyone who has had a massage knows how relaxed and refreshed you feel when it’s done! Acupuncture uses thin needles inserted at certain points on the body. Many people report a decrease in pain and distress after an acupuncture treatment. Since stress is often a trigger for migraine and also contributes to tension headache, these alternative treatments may be effective for both types of headache. They may be used alone or in combination with other treatments to both ease symptoms and prevent occurrences. Hypnosis has been effective for some patients, to help them relax or make beneficial lifestyle changes. Regular exercise is another great stress reliever. Migraines are triggered in many people by certain foods or by lack of certain nutrients. Regular healthy meals, avoiding any specific triggers, may aid prevention. Some novel approaches are being studied. Non-invasive brain stimulation, using low intensity electrical currents, causes no pain and is easy to dispense. Magnetic pulses are similarly used. In one study, a device placed on the forehead for 20 minutes per day has shown a 50 percent reduction in headache days for participants. The causes and varieties of headaches are complex—and we’ve only discussed two of the most common types here. Headache can be a symptom of a disease or even a stroke, so an accurate diagnosis is critical. Specialists in neurology and pain management are among the professionals who can help. For chronic tension headaches, massage therapists, chiropractors, and those trained in biofeedback or hypnosis may offer relief. A pain clinic or clinic specializing in headaches typically brings together a team from a variety of disciplines to diagnose and treat. Experts in pain management will develop a unique plan for each patient. Their focus will be on relieving pain and preventing future distress. Enjoy a Personal Shopping Experience Benefits of Boutique Shopping
By Angella A. Arndt
Shopping is a personal experience, an adventure, a quest to find things that spark our interest and make us happy…or, at least, it used to be. With department and big box stores minimizing inventory and staff, shopping at these stores has become an exhaustive endeavor to find something unique among the mundane or, at the very least, a clerk who can help you. Some consumers have turned to online shopping and applaud its expansion and convenience. It has its place, but online shopping can’t provide ambience, product expertise, or personal service. It doesn’t offer the satisfaction of finding an item and having it immediately. Department stores, big box stores, and online shopping just don’t have that personal touch. Thankfully, there are still shops that provide an inspirational, intimate shopping experience. Boutiques specialize in providing the personalized shopping experience so many of us crave. You don’t have to wander through endless aisles, trying to find what you’re looking for or hoping something will catch your eye. You can browse without fighting large crowds, enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, receive personal attention, and find inspiration in unique items. When you shop at a local boutique, you can touch and see what you’re purchasing. You don’t have to gamble on the accuracy of an online photo. You’re able to assess the quality, fit, feel, and comfort of each item on the spot. Boutiques carry good quality merchandise and

tend to have fabulous sales. At a boutique, you won’t have to search for an employee to help you. Boutique employees are readily available and are often quite knowledgeable about the products they carry. They can even help you find that special something you may not have noticed. Don’t see what you want at the store? Speak with the boutique owner, who might be able to find what you’re looking for from a supplier. We’ve all had negative online shopping experiences—you eagerly await your purchase in the mail, only to be disappointed that the item doesn’t fit, is the wrong color, or is of lower quality than the website suggested. You don’t have to worry about any of that when you shop in person at a boutique. You won’t have to wait for your delivery or potential disappointment, which leads to the hassle of the mail-order return process. You can try on items before you buy and have the satisfaction of leaving with your purchases right away. Love

an outfit you found, but it doesn’t quite fit? Many boutiques offer alteration services or can recommend one for you. Whether you’re shopping for clothing, food, furniture, or home accessories, boutique shopping helps you maintain an individual sense of style. Boutiques purchase limited quantities of specific merchandise, so you won’t run into people all over town who have the same products you have. Finding unique home furnishings and accessories sets your home apart from those furnished with mass-produced items. Boutiques usually offer the latest in fashion and trends. Wouldn’t it be fun to be a trendsetter in your town? Shopping at local boutiques strengthens the local economy. Boutiques create jobs that are local, not jobs at remote headquarters in another state. Many shops sell goods made by local artists and merchants, which keeps an even greater share of your money within your community. Investing locally means that more money is available for city improvements and growth, which are essential to a vibrant community. The types of boutiques are nearly endless, so you’re sure to find a local shop that has the type of products you’re looking for. Boutiques for women’s clothing offer apparel in various styles, including edgy, casual, sporty, special occasion, lingerie, and haute couture. Some boutiques offer a variety of styles; some specialize in a particular one. Many clothing boutiques also carry accessories and shoes to complement their clothing lines. Boutiques for men’s clothing and accessories are similar; they offer styles that run the gamut, from business and formalwear to outdoor gear and casual clothes. It’s also easy to find a boutique that specializes in clothing and accessories for kids in different age groups—teens, children, and infants. Boutiques that specialize in furniture or home accessories offer one-of-a-kind pieces to give your home a unique flair. You can find things like artwork, lamps, rugs, pillows, and other accessory items to uniquely personalize your home. The truth is that boutiques can specialize in any number of specific items, from gift items to toiletries, from vitamins to cleaning products to vinegars and oils. Get out there and have fun discovering the local boutiques in your city. You’ll enjoy an intimate shopping experience and build personal relationships. You’ll support your local economy. You may even find the thing you didn’t know you were looking for! Sources for this article included: business. com, fastcompany.com, and forbes.com. WE

New and Redesigned Models for 2020 What to Buy, How to Buy
By Brennan Hallock
That “new car smell” has come to symbolize the excitement of purchasing a brand-new vehicle, but there’s much more to it than just the scent! If you’ve never experienced the joy of driving a new vehicle off the lot, the 2020 auto lineup is your chance. Porsche Taycan (starts at $80,000): This is Porsche’s first all-electric model. The electric engine provides a range of 310 miles and should have a 250-mile range with a mere 15-minute charge. Of course, Porsche is known more for its performance than its economy, and this vehicle does not step too far outside Porsche’s comfort zone. It will be able to generate 402, 536, or 670 horsepower, depending on which engine you choose. The most powerful option will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Jeep Gladiator (starts at $34,500): This is Jeep’s first pickup in years. It is everything a Jeep lover could want in a pickup: removable doors and top, iconic Jeep grill, standard rectangular Jeep frame, 3.6L V6 engine, 285 horsepower, 260 pound-feet of torque, and, of course, a pickup bed. Cadillac XT6 (starts at $53,690): The XT6 fills the Cadillac void between the giant Escalade and the mid-sized XT5. This beautiful addition to the Cadillac lineup will seat seven in three rows of seats and has all the standard luxuries that have become synonymous with Cadillac: heated seats and steering wheel,
power-folding second and third row seats, six USB ports, a ninespeed transmission, auto emergency braking, blind spot warning, and pedestrian detection. Ford Bronco (starts at $30,000): This model is a redesign of the model that was so popular in the 1990s. It looks surprisingly similar but has significant upgrades. It combines the sporty feel of its early years with the cargo space of its later years and is meant to be able to handle some good times off-road while still hauling what you need. Toyota Corolla Hybrid (starts at $18,700): This model will be more agile, more powerful, and sportier, in line with Toyota’s New Global Architecture platform. It reduces the vehicle’s weight and increases its fuel economy and safety. This redesign will also come with a new hybrid option, which boasts mileage of up to 50 mpg, at a surprisingly low starting price.

There are many things to consider before heading to your local dealership. The first is that negotiating is still an option (whether you enjoy it or not). The key is to be prepared. Before you begin negotiation, thoroughly research your potential purchase, have your upgrade options chosen, have a set price in mind, and be willing to walk away. Don’t be argumentative—be kind but firm. Don’t be insultingly low with your offers, either—you’ll come across as someone who didn’t do any research. Shopping around is important to the buying process, and it’s best to do your research before you head to the dealership. There are lots of sites online that have information about different makes and models. Check out cars.com, edmunds.com, kbb. com, jdpower.com, or caranddriver.com. Once you’re at the dealership, you’ll need to ask questions. Salespeople are trained and will be able to assist you as much as you let them. Some questions to ask include: How long is the warranty (and what does it cover)? What are some common repairs for the model? Are there any additional fees? Are manufacturer rebates (or low-cost financing) available? Here’s a tip: If you know there’s a rebate available, but the salesperson tells you it’s only available to customers who pay the sticker price, move on. This
is not true—these rebates come directly from the manufacturer, not the dealer. Keep in mind that women may be treated differently when buying a car. The truth is that everyone makes assumptions based on gender. It’s smart to acknowledge this beforehand and enter the situation armed against negative assumptions. Simply preparing yourself with knowledge about the model you’re interested in will give you an advantage. Keep in mind that a strong negotiator is always prepared to walk away. Be ready to say, “I’ll think about it,” or even a flat “no” if the dealer won’t give you the price you want. If you’re trading in a vehicle, check its value beforehand on a site like Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com). Financing can be a stressful part of car buying. You may feel CADILLAC XT6 less stress at the dealership if you’ve handled the financing portion beforehand by getting pre-approved for a loan at your bank or credit union. You can shop around for the best rate, and you won’t have to worry about it while you’re negotiating price and extra features at the dealership. Make this the year that you bring home that brandnew car smell! Sources for this article included: autowise.com, consumerreports. org, cars.usnews.com, and myfinancialgoals.org. WE

The Good Life
Heal Thyself Regenerative Therapies in Medicine and Aesthetics
By Ellen M. Walker
Who wouldn’t be interested in what seems like miraculous regeneration of body tissues, using cells from the patient’s own body? Researchers have been working for years on better ways to help the body repair itself with its own growth factors, and some of these treatments are already in use. Let’s take a look at two of them: stem cell treatment and platelet-rich plasma. First of all, what are stem cells? The National Stem Cell Foundation describes them as the body’s “master cells,” the cells from which all organs, tissues, and blood are created. These multipurpose cells can develop into all the other, more specific types of cells in the body, including heart and muscle cells, blood cells, brain cells, and bone cells. In fact, they’re doing this in your body all the time, working as kind of a repair system, replenishing certain types of cells that have died or malfunctioned. Stem cells in their embryonic stages have the ability to develop into any kind of cell—that’s how animals develop in utero. Adult stem cells, on the other hand, can generally only develop into the type of body tissue in which they reside. This limits the types of conditions they can treat. However, research that coaxes adult stem cells into developing into different types of cells is ongoing and exciting! Stem cell therapy is when additional stem cells are introduced into the body to help this regenerative process along. For example, when a cancer patient undergoes chemo and radiation therapy, healthy cells are destroyed along with the cancer cells. Stem cells (often harvested from a healthy donor’s bone marrow) can be infused into the patient’s blood. As the injected cells settle into the patient’s bone marrow, they begin to grow more healthy cells. In 2019, scientists are working to develop an effective stem cell treatment to help patients with diabetes produce their own insulin. Stem cell regeneration also promotes repair of neurological damage from Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, even spinal cord injuries. Stem cells can be injected into a joint crippled by arthritis to help regrow cartilage. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of science’s stem cell revolution, as the list of discoveries continues to grow. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is essentially your own blood, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and then injected back into your body to boost cellular repair and regrowth. Like stem cell therapy, it is often used in orthopedic applications like the treatment of osteoarthritis, overuse injuries, and other joint issues. Recently, platelet-rich plasma has been used in aesthetics, as well, where its anti-aging properties are fighting wrinkles. One example is what is known as a “vampire” face lift (so-called because it uses blood to regenerate tissue). The plasma is injected into your face, and the same regenerative properties that are helping
60

regrow cartilage in a knee will stimulate collagen and cell growth in the skin. This improves texture, skin tone, and fine lines. The results get better over a few months and last for up to two years. A key practical advantage of stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma is that they are relatively noninvasive and can help patients avoid the risks of surgical treatment. Of course, cells must be harvested first. With platelet-rich plasma, the harvesting process is essentially a blood draw for the patient; the rest of the work is done in the lab. Stem cell harvesting is a little more involved and may require access to bone marrow (often from the hip), but it’s far from a surgical procedure. In either case, the therapies are reintroduced into the area being treated. Multiple treatments may be required. The results of stem cell therapy are widely varied, based on things like the area treated and the level of deterioration. You probably won’t feel any improvement for a few weeks, at least. After that time, improvement should increase over the next several months. For arthritis, treatment studies have shown results that last anywhere from six months to several years. If you’re interested in what this type of treatment might be able to do for your health conditions, choose a practitioner who is trained in these therapies. Specialized practitioners may have significant experience with stem cell therapy or platelet-rich plasma treatments to help heal worn-down or injured joints. If wrinkles are what you want to improve, check with your dermatologist for a recommendation. Not all spas can offer the vampire facial because it is not a strictly cosmetic procedure, but a medical spa may offer the service. It’s an exciting moment for this field of medicine, and you could be a part of it! Talk to your doctor today and learn what stem cell therapy or platelet-rich plasma could do for you. Oregon Wine Country 769 Wineries and Counting! By Jackie Williams
Believe it or not, Oregon has 769 wineries, 1,144 vineyards, more than 500 tasting rooms, over 72 varieties of wine grapes, and 19 distinct American viticultural areas (designated wine grape–growing regions in the United States). So, is Oregon a good place to visit for a wine-tasting trip? You betcha! Oregon is recognized as an elite winemaking region, with over half of its wines rated 90+ by the magazine Wine Spectator—a feat no other state can boast. May is Oregon’s wine festival month, so that’s a great time to visit if you want to take advantage of fun events, small batch offerings, and deals on wines. Any time of year is a good time to go for wine tasting. If your idea of a vacation includes driving along winding rivers, past fields of flowers, over covered bridges, and past scenic waterfalls, you are going to love Oregon’s wine country. Sunday drives are not complete without checking out a local rodeo or farmers market on your way to the tasting rooms. The landscapes are beautiful, and the historic downtown areas are fun for a stroll and window shopping. With 19 areas to choose from, where do you start? You could choose which wine valley is closest to one of the four most popular airports. You could also choose by the type of wine you want to drink. Riesling, pinot

noir, and chardonnay lovers should head to Willamette Valley. Syrah, cabernet sauvignon, and viognier drinkers should visit southern Oregon and the Walla Walla Valley. Perhaps you’d like to choose your area based on the scenery you’ll encounter and not just the wine. Home to Crater Lake National Park, southern Oregon’s orchards and vineyards are set against alpine meadows and crystal clear rivers. If you want a wider range of choices, head to eastern Oregon and the Columbia Gorge. The Hood River Fruit Loop takes you to the cliffs of the Columbia River, where you will spot plenty of waterfalls and look down on waterfront towns. Touring wine country has never been so easy. a motorcycle, or even on horseback. Take a relaxing and scenic train ride on the Amtrak Cascades to different wine regions, or get those legs pumping by riding vineyard to vineyard on the many developed bike trails that Oregon is famous for. Renting an electric bike to tour around would be a great way to see wine country, as well. Another important thing to know is that Oregon is tax free and wines fly free. That’s right—Alaska Airlines runs a promotion where you can bring wine back home as checked baggage for free. Be sure to save your boarding pass—it’s good for complimentary tastings at 300 participating tasting rooms within 10 days. Talk about a deal! In case you’re having a hard time narrowing down which wineries to visit, let me share what the locals love. Everyone is going to tell you they have the best wine, but these places in particular have more to offer than a glass of vino. Applegate Valley has Plaisance Ranch, where they raise cows and sell organic meat. DANCIN Winery is absolutely beautiful and is open later than most places. Bayer Family Estate has horses, a river, and entertainment throughout the summer. Willamette Valley is easily accessible from Portland. In that area, I recommend Antica Terra, Four Graces, Argyle, Sokol Blosser, and Stoller Family Estate. From there, stay a couple of nights in McMinnville’s gorgeous Atticus Hotel. Downtown McMinnville has 20 walkable tasting rooms for a little variety. Head just a bit out of town and visit two of the locals’ favorite wineries: Maysara and Coeur de Terre. Whichever wine region of Oregon you choose, you’ll find every type of accommodation you can ask for. Stay in a quaint B and B, in a boutique hotel, on a farm, at a traditional chain hotel, or even in a peaceful riverside home rental. If you are looking for a completely different experience, book a restored classic camp trailer at The Vintages Trailer Resort just outside of Dundee. Your trailer comes complete with complimentary cruiser bikes for exploring the nearby bike paths. You will have a great time getting a sample of what Oregon has to offer, whether you’re in it for the natural scenery or the local wines. Take advantage of these gorgeous landscapes and famous settings to get to know Oregon better. On your next trip, you can tackle the fantastic beer and cider scene! The Green Thumb
Heyday of the Garden Beautiful Bounties
By Sharon Knierim
The eighth month of the year can be one of the most beautiful. It certainly ranks high in its bounty. Now is the time of the gardening season when we are picking and plucking vegetable crops and starting to eye the apple trees to check for ripening fruit. We’re still picking raspberries and blackberries, and, if we’re lucky, there are some wonderfully sweet red strawberries left to enjoy. If you are one of those talented (and patient) gardeners who cans, freezes, and dehydrates the tasty rewards of the garden, you will be busier than a bee right now. Isn’t preserving food a lot of work? Truly, it is a very labor-intensive task, in which conditions need to remain sterile and you have a long list of other “must do” tasks. You have to admit, though, that the quality and the excellent taste of home-preserved garden bounty is worth the time and effort required. It’s also true that this process is extremely rewarding. By the end of the season, you might easily have a pantry filled with canned or dehydrated fruits and vegetables. Your new “collection” is not only beautiful and delicious, it allows you, as the creator, certain bragging rights. (You can look forward to some “oohs” and “aahs” when you give your friends a little tour.) Of course, after you’ve filled your pantry shelves, there is always
room in the freezer for home-preserved foods—in fact, some foods actually are better if they’re frozen. Whatever method you use for preserving food, it’s a good investment toward your family’s physical health as well as your financial health. As we come to August, we are naturally beginning to think about the eventual end of the current gardening season. If you have not been keeping a gardening diary, take a little time to journal, either with pen and paper or by creating a garden video. Include information and visuals showing what worked for the garden this season and what can be improved upon for next year. Doing so will give you a good head start next spring, as we begin gardening once again. August is also the perfect time to begin collecting seeds from

spent blossoms. Not every plant will provide this opportunity, but those that do offer something special to your future plantings. When seeds are collected and saved for a new season, be certain they are absolutely dry. Moist seeds will not work! When collected seeds are completely dry, store them in an airtight container or seal them in an envelope. Label each container, including the type of seed inside, the date collected, the color of the bloom, the location in your garden, and the rate of success. Do not skip this step! You will think that you’ll know what is what next spring, but it is certain that you won’t—nobody does. Seed collecting is a popular method of sharing and trading with fellow gardening friends. In return for your own seeds, you just might find yourself introduced to some new species you’ve not enjoyed before. This is the month when the garden is at its peak of performance. Although there are many chores to perform, and the weather may not be the most comfortable, please be sure to take some time to enjoy both the beauty and the bounty of nature’s gift to us. Treat yourself to a stroll through the gardens (without pulling weeds). Stretch out on the patio or deck and smell the ripe aroma of this very special and natural month. Enjoy the garden beauty that you and Mother Nature have created together. GARDENING ALERT: Do remember to be careful of insects in the garden. A fellow gardener recently found a tick on her back, which appeared to have been there for several days. When she removed it, she flushed it down the toilet. The next week, she discovered a rather large red welt where the tick had been. She consulted her physician and is now undergoing treatment for possible Lyme disease. As we all know but usually forget, it is important to save the tick and place it in an old medicine bottle or sealable bag so that it can be checked by medical personnel. I urge you all to be careful as you enjoy the summer’s warm months. A few extra minutes checking your skin, hair, and clothing could be very important to your health. Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener through Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa sine 2003. Today she lives on a small arm in western Iowa and she looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her green thumbed reader friends. WE August 2019

Cuddly Critters
In Sickness and In Health A Pet Parent’s Guide to Medical Treatment By Brie Christensen
One of the many ways pet owners express their love for their sweet animals is through the care they provide for them. Although pet owners can tell you that they do their best to maintain their animals’ health all of the time, medical issues may arise. When a problem emerges, it’s always best to understand what you’re up against so you can appropriately handle your pet’s health issue. To keep you informed, let’s take a look at some of the most common pet diseases and procedures. Besides regular spaying and neutering surgeries, it’s common for both cats and dogs to need tooth extraction at some point in their lives. Other major surgeries that both felines and canines are prone to have might involve benign skin masses, skin abscesses, inflammation, pressure ulcers, and bladder stones. Dogs are more likely to need surgery for a cruciate (ACL) rupture. One of the most common diseases in dogs is rabies, which is transmitted through a bite from an infected animal and is, unfortunately, almost always fatal. Fortunately, there’s a simple way to protect your dog (or cat) from this disease—vaccination. Proof of rabies vaccination is generally required for pet licensing; check with your vet for the appropriate schedule for your pet. Yet another life-threatening disease in dogs is parvovirus, which is spread through exposure to tainted feces and requires intensive treatment involving intravenous fluids and medications. Unvaccinated younger pups are more likely to be affected by the disease. Dogs are also at risk of contracting Lyme disease through a tick bite. This is usually successfully treated by administering antibiotics. Prevention includes checking your dog’s skin for ticks after playing outside. Distemper, transmitted by contact with an infected dog’s nose, is the number-one cause of infectious disease death in canines. It affects the gastrointestinal, nervous, and respiratory systems. Although there is no cure, there are available vaccines that can prevent the disease. Cats, on the other hand, are prone to cancer. As with humans, treatment options vary and can include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy. Though cancer can be found in cats of all ages and breeds, it is most often diagnosed in older cats. Additionally, certain breeds of cats may be more prone to certain types of cancers. For example, cats with white ears and heads are more susceptible to skin cancer. Diabetes is another common disease in felines. It can be treated in various ways, including oral medication, dietary changes, or injected insulin. Male cats are more prone to developing diabetes, and weight can play a significant role. Cats are also susceptible to feline immunodeficiency virus, but they may live symptom-free for years after infection. There is no cure, but experts say that cats who are treated medically after symptoms appear and are kept in stress-free environments can live for months or even years before terminal stages develop.

Another fairly common disease in cats is ringworm, which is extremely contagious and causes hair loss in the shape of a ring. Your vet can prescribe shampoo or ointment to combat the fungus. It’s not uncommon for pets to need serious medical attention at some point in their lives. Because of this, many pet owners opt to purchase pet insurance to handle potentially pricey medical bills. Typically, pet insurance can include accident coverage, illness coverage, wellness coverage, or all of the above. Accident coverage might include torn ligaments or broken bones, while illness coverage might include treatment for cancer or arthritis. Wellness coverage generally pays for more routine exams or testing. Pet owners can expect deductibles to vary, depending on the specific plan, as well as the breed and age of the animal. Some plans may have deductibles that range from $100 to $500, but the price is directly related to the specifications of the animal’s current health. As with human health insurance, there are a lot of options out there. It’s important to adequately research each company before choosing a policy. When a medical issue occurs, you want to be able to focus on your pet’s health, not worry about your insurance coverage. Some companies that offer other types of insurance (like auto insurance) may also offer pet insurance; other companies do strictly pets. Ask your vet for a recommendation, and be sure to check out each company online with the Better Business Bureau. The last thing you want for your pets is to see them struggling with medical problems. It’s critical to understand common pet procedures, diseases, and insurance options so you’re better prepared in the case of a health emergency. When all is said and done, you’ll be glad you made your pet’s health a priority. Sources for this article included: aspca.org, akc.org, and caninejournal.com. WE

Positive Perspective
Brady Bunch It’s Time To Listen On a scale of one to 10, how would you rate your own listening skills? Years ago, I would have rated myself about an eight…and I would have been wrong. “One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say.” —Byrant H. McGill I have come to the conclusion that being a great listener is a whole lot harder and takes a lot more work than I ever could have imagined. I grew up in a family with six kids. Three girls, and then three boys, all born within a 10-year span. We were…and are…all very strong individuals, all very competitive with one another. If you wanted to be “heard,” you spoke up. You raised your voice. You interrupted. You talked over your brothers and sisters. I grew up learning to be a very poor listener. “Effective listening is more than simply avoiding the bad habit of interrupting others while they are speaking or finishing their sentences. It’s being content to listen to the entire thought of someone rather than waiting impatiently for your chance to respond.”—Richard Carlson About six years ago, my lack of listening skills was brought to my attention. Immediately, I went into denial. After all, I owned this

magazine. I had met literally hundreds (if not thousands) of people over the years. How could I have gotten to where I was in my life if I hadn’t really been listening to my readers, my customers, and my coworkers all this time? The problem was, I very much respected the person who called me out. It was time for me to truly begin to listen. “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” —Stephen R. Covey Yep, that was me. I was great at paying very close attention to what someone said…so that I could come up with the perfect response to convince that person to move to my way of thinking. I was very “set in my ways,” to the point that I surrounded myself with people who agreed with me…or could be convinced to agree with me. “Most people do not have a problem with you thinking for yourself, as long as your conclusions are the same as, or at least compatible with, their beliefs.” —Mokokoma Mokhonoana Reflecting upon my business and my relationships was challenging. Frankly, it was hard to take a look at how I had been in the past and to make decisions about how I wanted to be different in the future. I admit, I’m not there yet. I am working on it every day. It’s hard, but it’s worth the journey. I promise. WE
