Time and Terabytes It’s already August! The earth must be spinning faster, I’m sure. Hang on tight! School will soon be back in session. My sister, Barb, will celebrate her **th birthday this month. We laugh at what we used to think of people who were as old as we are now. Wow! The passage of time keeps things interesting, though, whether we’re 118 or just 18. Young people have been doing amazing things for centuries. Over 2,000 years ago, a teenager named Caesar Augustus became the ruler of the Roman Empire. Not only is this month named after him, but Caesar Augustus is remembered as a great thinker and one of the greatest rulers in history—and he did it all without the benefit of Wi-Fi! We shouldn’t let people’s ages, or the eras in which they were born, influence our opinions of their capabilities. There are some great thinkers in the modern era, too. Adam, my oldest son, always loved story time. When he was three, his critical thinking skills bloomed. As I finished reading “The Man in the Moon” to him for the gazillionth time, he sat up in bed and gazed out the window at the moon. After some deep thought, he said, “Can he see me? How did he get in there?” I asked, “How did who get in where?” and he responded, “How did the man get inside the moon?” I did my best to explain to him that the man wasn’t actually IN the moon, he was ON the moon, like we are ON the earth. “Why doesn’t he fall off the moon? Why don’t we fall off the earth?” His eyes glazed over. I did my best to explain gravity and then my own eyes glazed over. I told him that the man in the moon will not fall off. He is not watching you. He is where he is supposed to be. We are where we are supposed to be, and we will not fall off the earth. We were both relieved. Today, when I call one of my sons with a question about my computer or my phone, the conversation goes something like this: “Am I being watched? How does this thing know where I am? Why do I need the Cloud? I didn’t type that in there!” They explain the satellites and the gigabytes, megabytes, and terabytes. My eyes glaze over. They reassure me that the Cloud is where it should be, and I don’t need to worry. No one is watching me. I feel like a contemporary of Caesar Augustus. See you again soon! Keep asking questions and enjoy your August!

Back-to-School Trends Confidence for a Successful School Year
By Holly Bell
School shopping—just hearing this phrase triggers all kinds of feelings in both parents and children! Start your kids on the right foot this fall by helping them find their LOOK! It’s important to help them feel confident…and nothing boosts confidence like feeling comfortable in your own clothes and looking great. Kids look at each new school year with excitement, and it all starts with that all-important fresh outfit for the first day of school. When picking that special outfit, make sure it flatters the body and will be comfortable all day. Skirts that are too short, tops that are too tight, or shoes that just aren’t comfortable are not going to be winners (and may well be against the school’s dress code). The combination of standard basic jeans or leggings with a graphic tee is always a go-to favorite. The graphic tee is a great way to show off some personality! Your child can make a statement with pixelated patterns, animals, beach themes, funny faces, and more. Teens are wearing their graphic tees tucked into the front of the jean with the back not tucked in. It’s a cute way to show off a cool belt buckle. Speaking of the graphic tee, you can’t get much more cute and comfortable than a t-shirt dress. Cool and easy to throw on when the morning is rushed, pair it with cute sneakers and a jean jacket, and you have a great back-to-school basic. This look is perfect for all ages, from toddlers to teens. Stripes are all the rage this year. Big stripes, little stripes, and everything in between—it’s a subtle way to have a little flair. Let your kids mix and match stripes with other graphics or patterns to express their own fashion sense. Let them ignite their creativity! Plaid is not going away anytime soon. You’ll find plaid for girls and boys, this laid-back pattern looks adorable on kids of all ages. Another favorite is the slip dress. This was a 1990s icon, but 2018 has reclaimed this look for its simplicity and versatility. Layered

with a plain white tee underneath as a jumper or worn with a tie-front shirt on top or any style jacket, the slip dress can be a go-to fave for tweens to teens. Dress it up or down with booties or sneakers. Throwing a cute sweater over the top can help the slip dress transition to the cooler days of fall. Athleisure is here to stay, and cute designs in track outfits will bring out your child’s sporty side. Popular fall styles will feature a waist-cropped top with a hoodie, along with slim-cut track pants. For the girly girl who loves dresses and skirts, a cool look is a high-low maxi dress. Worn with sneakers and a denim or boho jacket, this look can show off a feminine side with flair. School shopping should always include accessories! The most necessary item for fall is, of course, the backpack. Lugging books back and forth can be literally a pain, but when carried in a cute and trendy backpack, it is definitely less so. Like a graphic tee, a backpack is a great place to put some personality on display. For sporty girls, Nike has a cute paint-splattered backpack with the logo proudly displayed in a very stylistic way. How about a bold print embellished with pom-poms? An ongoing favorite is the Vera Bradley floral look. Stop and smell the roses or posies on this feminine bag. For a little glamour, pick a backpack embellished with gold zippers. Along with school clothing, shoes, and backpacks, don’t forget the latest hair trends. Braids have long been my favorite, and they’re still popular. French braids, side braids, braids twisted into a bun—you can’t go wrong with this look, and it stays neat all day long! Crazy colors are still around for girls who are looking for a little edge, but many of them are happy with just a few strands of color or a contrasting color underneath. Waves and more waves are still the rage, along with the “beachy” hair that has been a trend for a few years now. Super-short hair is on a comeback, too, for those with the hair and head shape that warrant the look. Before the alarm starts ringing each morning, it’s a good idea to set up a few routines to help the mornings go smoother. One great tip is to have your kids choose their outfits the night before. Have them set their clothes on a dresser or nightstand so they’re ready to go in the morning. There’s nothing worse than enduring a meltdown because someone can’t choose what to wear or waiting on a teenager who goes through 20 outfits before deciding on just the right one! Preparation is the key to happiness to getting out the door on time! The bell will be ringing soon! Don’t be late for a fresh new start. Set your kids up for school success this fall with confidence, comfort, and style. Happy shopping! WE For more information, visit www.teacollection.com

Garrison Wellness Achieve Your Wellness Success By Amy Lynn Lopina
Lisa Garrison (also known as Coach Lisa) is a certified wellness coach and weight loss specialist who has successfully helped clients lose weight and live better for over 14 years. “Eighty percent of my clients are looking for weight loss and weight management,” Lisa notes. Clients’ issues may also include pain, anxiety, depression, and inflammation. Conditions are often interrelated, Lisa says, and she’s good at helping people with chronic conditions. “If someone wants assistance in getting a long-term correction, I can help.” After all, she notes, “around 70 percent of adults in the United States are considered overweight or obese. We have an epidemic!” At Garrison Wellness, Lisa gives her clients the tools, structure, and strategies they need to achieve their health and weight loss goals. Lisa is passionate about helping others, and she learned the skills to do it by helping herself. She retrained herself, learning to make healthy choices instead of choices of convenience. She lost 42 pounds in less than three months—and she’s kept it off for more than 14 years. “I got off all of my prescription medications,” she shares. Her husband lost 18 pounds and no longer has to take cholesterol medication. People started asking how she did it, and things blossomed from there. Now, as a trainer for FirstFitness Nutrition, Lisa travels the country and the world to speak about health and wellness. She believes so strongly in FirstFitness Nutrition that she chose to use only their products with her own company, Garrison Wellness. You’ll begin with a free consultation, during which Lisa will help you identify your goals, and you can both decide if the partnership would be a good fit. “People need a partner,” Lisa says. “They need a coach, not a friend. With weight loss, if they could do it on their own, they wouldn’t be seeing me. They need a partner who will keep them accountable.” Lisa asks a series of questions during the initial consultation to find out how she can best serve you. She asks about energy level, mental clarity, sleep patterns, stress, eating habits, and more. It’s important to be honest! “I want to see what your real life looks like, not the polished version.” This is not a one-size-fits-all program. Lisa customizes a protocol for each client, and you stay in regular contact with her throughout the process. Lisa doesn’t believe in diets. “It’s not about sucking on celery in the corner,” she explains. “A diet doesn’t change your thinking. It doesn’t change your habits or your relationship with food. It is not a long-term correction.” Instead of advising clients to cut calories,
12
Lisa works to improve each client’s relationship with food. Her expertise is resetting the body’s pH balance, which is the ratio of acidity to alkalinity. She helps Lisa Garrison, people reduce systemic yeast growth (candida) and certified wellness coach and weight loss inflammation in the body. “Inflammation is the pooling specialist of acid in a weakened or damaged area,” Lisa explains. “The way to get acidity down is to evaluate your fueling pattern, sleep quality, and elimination pattern. It is all connected.” Sometimes, popular ways of thinking are not helpful. For example, she asserts, cow’s milk is really for baby cows, not humans. “However, yogurt can be a good thing. It helps restore the healthy flora to the gut.” Lisa explains that some of the signs of having candida overgrowth include a filmy tongue, canker sores, yeast infections, and storing extra weight around the middle of the body. “Going to the gym and working out will not lower acidity or attack candida,” Lisa says. “That’s a body chemistry issue.” Lisa educates her clients in choosing the foods that are best for balancing pH levels, and she provides handy food lists for meals and snacks. Her clients’ success stories are the proof, and they’re what Lisa loves to share. One example is a married couple in their 60s who lost weight and changed their habits. The husband is down to his high school wrestling weight. His wife was injecting insulin three times a day. Now? No insulin injections. Client Lisa Kemp shares her experience. “I cannot say enough about what Lisa Garrison has done for me and my husband,” she says. “We are medical providers, and we were very impressed. I went on the weight loss program and lost 11 pounds in 10 days, and I went on to lose 36 pounds in four months.” These are the stories that Lisa loves to hear. “I want my clients to take ownership of their health stories,” she concludes. “It’s about a system correction and changing habits, with long-term results.” To get started on your path to wellness at Garrison Wellness, please call Lisa at 719-266-4174, text to 719359-3762, or send a message to coachLisaG@gmail.com. A Woman’s Work
Generations
Is There Really a Gap? By Sharon Knierim
Our immediate family is made up of three generations. Sometimes, we all find ourselves living under the same roof. The reasons for these periods of togetherness vary—there are instances of waiting for a new home to be available, as well as other bridges to cross, that bring us together spiritually, mentally, and physically. At one time, I asked my mother if she would like to come and live with us. “NO,” she replied. She reminded me that she had already lived with her children for 18 years each…and that was plenty. Of course, I took that pretty hard. In truth, I think she was speaking to the essence of her desire to enjoy her own independence. All in all, I believe that she chose correctly—she was as self-determined as I am, and it was probably best that we did live 30 miles apart. Mother was not a frail woman, and she may well have worn us all out. Now that I myself am the age that she was when I began my campaign to move her into our home, I often feel the same way. There are a few differences between our circumstances— for example, Mother and Dad raised five children, whereas my husband and I only raised two. Even to this day, I am glad to have the next generation live in their separate apartment.
As we were growing up, our widowed grandmother lived with us. She was very frail and very emotional. We children made her nervous, and she made us nervous, too. Sadly, there was no communication to soothe us or help us accept each other. Of course, anyone who has lived with multiple generations under one roof recognizes that there will be moments that are less than sterling and that little hissy fits can break out at any time. Generally, however, I find it an appealing way to live. I typically feel sorry for people who live with me because I am sure that I am always right and that everyone should do just as I say at all times. However, here is where the gift is: My cohabitants

have always been and remain pretty clever at educating me and showing me that, more often than not, there are at least two sides to a story and more than one way to consider any situation—that not everything is black and white. I know they’re right, and I appreciate what they have done for me as they work diligently at keeping my mind broadened. We may be from different generations, but we seem to share the same core values. In fact, it’s become a favorite pastime for us to participate in casual debate. We don’t solve the problems of the world, but we do all gain new insights into how to approach and deal with those problems. Throughout history, there have always been misunderstandings and lack of trust between generations. It is probably just part of living. As we grow up, it is natural for us to doubt our parents and teachers. We question authority. When we are young, we want more than anything to be individuals and to form our own ideas. In the end, everything usually falls into place. We’ve all heard the term “generation gap,” but why does it really exist and why does it persist? I believe it is human-made and human-sustained. Like so many human endeavors, it is unnecessary and totally useless. Why not spend all the time and effort put forth to promote this gap toward a better end? Understanding other people, especially those closest to us, is one of life’s most wonderful gifts. Understanding others makes thinking and decision-making much easier and more profound, and it helps us understand ourselves. Finding common ground is a process that does not often happen overnight. It takes work, dedication, and honesty, but the product of understanding each other’s values systems and eliminating gaps in communication is what brings us closer together. We won’t always agree, but making an effort to understand another person’s perspective really has no downsides. If you decide to close the generation gap, you might have to do what I was forced to do—give up always wanting to be the person in the right. Nobody is right all the time. Who would want to be? Understanding is a two-way street, and you can’t truly travel that street by yourself. Luckily, it’s much more fun to travel with someone else. Author’s Note: Research for this article was derived from four generations of adults ranging from 18 to 85 years of age. I would like to thank all parties who shared their candor and personal insights. WE

Fresh Concept
Bankruptcy, Bankruptcy, Bankruptcy What You Need to Know if Unexpected Circumstances Arise By Kylie Gumpert
Americans have a lot of debt—over $13 billion last year, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York—and experts predict that American debt will continue to climb. When unexpected financial circumstances arise, a household’s budget can change dramatically, and debt can become a crushing burden. Such circumstances could include job loss, divorce, storm damage to the home, medical bills, out-of-control spending, or a combination of these. If you’re working night and day to keep afloat and you’re still coming up short, filing for bankruptcy might be the best option for regaining your life. Bankruptcy is an option that people can take to relieve them of debt that they have no ability to pay back or that they need more time to pay back. (Businesses can also file for bankruptcy, though the vast majority of bankruptcy filings in the United States are made by individuals.) Of course, bankruptcy is no miracle cure. It can also have long-lasting negative effects, such as making it difficult to find employment and rebuild your credit—you may even be required to sell off certain possessions. There are also certain debts that bankruptcy cannot erase. These include student loans, child support, debts owed through criminal acts such as fraud, government fines, and secured debts (debts that can be traced back to an individual item such as jewelry or a mortgage). Before deciding to file for bankruptcy, you should first know which types of bankruptcy you can file, as well as whether a different debt management plan would work for your financial situation. Managing overwhelming debt involves sorting out what’s owed and working with a credit counselor to get lower interest rates and payments. Settling debt involves working with a settlement company who makes a settlement offer to creditors. Consolidating debt involves bundling multiple loans into one with a lower interest rate, making it easier to pay off. Filing for bankruptcy should always be a last resort. To start the process, locate a nonprofit credit counseling agency that is accredited by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. This step is legally required by the Federal Trade Commission if you are considering filing for bankruptcy, as you will need to take a pre-bankruptcy counseling session as well as a post-filing debtor education course that might be in person, over the phone, or online. These information sessions and credit counselors will help you determine which path is most appropriate, explain the pros and cons of each, and help you analyze your spending and build budgeting systems to ensure that you never have to consider bankruptcy again. There are two bankruptcy options for individual debtors: chapter 7 and chapter 13. Let’s walk through an example of each option. In 2008, Dave had a steady job as a banker. When
16
the housing and financial crisis hit, his position was eliminated during company cutbacks. Jobs were scarce, and Dave had to take a position that paid significantly less than his previous one. After a while, the credit card debt he accumulated during his higher-paid days becomes overwhelming. He downsizes but still isn’t able to get all his bills paid on time. Creditors start calling him at work and talking about garnishing his wages. Dave decides to file for chapter 7, also known as a straight bankruptcy. In this type of bankruptcy, all of Dave’s non-exempt assets, if he has any, will be sold to pay off as much debt as possible. After that, all of his remaining debt will be cleared. The qualifications for exempt and non-exempt assets vary from state to state, but common examples of non-exempt assets include cash, bank accounts, stocks, collections, second homes, and second vehicles. In most cases, a trustee, who will manage the debtor’s assets throughout the bankruptcy process, determines that the debtor does not have any assets worth selling off. Still, there is always the chance that Dave will lose some of his property in a chapter 7 bankruptcy. Cheryl lives in a middle class neighborhood and works as an executive at a marketing agency. One day, she falls while doing work around her house, and she wakes up in a hospital bed. She’s had an aneurysm and will need to remain in the hospital for at least a couple of weeks. There are complications, and she learns she may not be able to return to work for a year. Her sick leave is used up, and her insurance won’t cover the time she still needs to rehabilitate. Medical bills stack up alongside her mortgage payments. Because she has no income, she can no longer afford her house payment. To avoid foreclosure, she works with a lawyer to file chapter 13 bankruptcy, through which she will receive
www.womensedition.com
an extension to pay off her debt under a payment plan. This option is best for debtors like Cheryl who have the ability to pay off their debts but not within the time frame that is required by credit or loan agencies. Still, many individuals who file for this type of bankruptcy do not reach their payment plan goals and later end up filing a chapter 7 bankruptcy. Chapter 13 bankruptcies, unlike chapter 7, place a cap on how large an individual’s debt can be. Last year, almost 490,000 individuals in the United States filed under chapter 7, while around 300,000 filed chapter 13. Filing for bankruptcy, however, is not a simple process. While not required, most debtors will benefit from hiring a bankruptcy lawyer who can consult on the case. A lawyer can also help fill out the paperwork—and there’s a lot of it. Bankruptcy lawyers should be certified and should belong to the National Association of Bankruptcy Attorneys. To file for bankruptcy, both Dave and Cheryl will need to prove that they have taken a federally-approved pre-bankruptcy counseling session within the last 180 days. They will need to file documents showing their assets and liabilities, current income, expenditures, and unexpired leases, as well as financial statements and tax records. They will also need to compile a list of all the debts they owe, including the amounts and who they are owed to, as well as a list of their property and their monthly expenses. On top of that, there are the fees—currently, it costs $245 to file a chapter 7 and $235 to file a chapter 13, plus a $75 administrative fee. A chapter 7 filing also requires a $15 trustee charge, and Dave will need to file a list of exempt assets. After filing, the court will inform creditors of the petitions for bankruptcy, and a meeting is set for 21 to 50 days later.
During this meeting, creditors and an appointed trustee will ask Dave and Cheryl questions about their circumstances and their debts owed and will sort out any discrepancies. After Dave’s meeting for chapter 7, the trustee will determine if his exempt asset list is acceptable or whether he has any assets worth liquidating. The trustee may also determine that Dave’s case should have been filed as a chapter 13. As long as creditors agree with the case and do not file a suit arguing that their debt should not be eliminated through bankruptcy, the process of erasing Dave’s debt from start to finish will be around six months. To finish filing chapter 13, Cheryl will need to work with a lawyer to file a repayment plan, either with her petition or up to two weeks after submitting it. The court will meet with creditors and schedule a hearing to decide how much she should pay, which could be anywhere from no payment to complete repayment. Once approved, Cheryl’s payments will be made to a trustee rather than directly to creditors. Late payments will not be permitted, and she should be debt-free in three to five years. Bankruptcies remain on credit reports for up to 10 years, which will make it difficult for Dave or Cheryl to get a loan or possibly even a job during that time. Still, when you consider how much they would have struggled had they not filed, bankruptcy was the best option for these debtors, despite the negatives that come with it. Having a clean slate is a chance that not everyone gets. It will be vital for them to maintain their finances and rebuild their savings to avoid being troubled by bankruptcy again. The Beauty of Choice Custom Furniture By Robyn V. Powell
If you’ve shopped in chain stores for furniture, you’ve probably experienced the frustration of finding something that was almost perfect. Perhaps it wasn’t quite the right size or color, or maybe the quality just wasn’t what you hoped. Most of us have become so accustomed to buying furniture from stores and online that we often overlook the option of custom pieces. It may be time to rethink the way we buy furnishings. Why settle when you have the option to bring something truly exciting into your home? Custom furniture brings a surprising number of benefits that mass-produced furniture simply can’t offer. Many people equate commissioning custom furniture with expensive price points and long wait times. It’s true that the initial outlay and time frame may be somewhat higher and longer than for ready-made items, but when you compare all the pros and cons, the scales tip favorably in the direction of custom options. One of the most obvious benefits is not having to compromise on things like quality or style. The knowledge that your furniture is durable and has been crafted with care from quality materials gives you confidence that you’ve made a sound investment. Choosing every design element, from wood species to the number of shelves or drawers to the small details like hardware, gives you the creative freedom to express your individuality and make a personal statement. Custom furniture provides flexible solutions for irregularly shaped rooms or challenging spaces. An efficient and beautiful way
to utilize space in your home is to introduce custom built-ins. Astute homeowners are keenly aware of the increased home equity that results from choosing quality kitchen and bathroom cabinetry. The same principle applies to built-in components such as entertainment centers, libraries, and home offices. Lack of storage space is an issue faced by many homeowners. Well-designed built-ins can maximize storage space, can be tailormade to fit any space, and can add dimension and personality to any room. Popular built-in ideas include a custom desk with useful storage for files and home office equipment; closets that attractively showcase clothing, accessories, and jewelry; and organized mudrooms with designated places for backpacks, sports equipment, and even your pet’s feeding station. Custom solutions bring style and functionality while optimizing your space. A built-in upholstered banquette can transform an ›››

awkward, cramped dining space into a comfortable and attractive breakfast nook. Tapping into unused vertical space by adding a Murphy bed will add versatility to your home office or den. Simply pull the bed down from the wall when your guests are ready to retire for the night. In the morning, the bed easily folds up and disappears, leaving floor space and seamlessly transitioning the room. Upholstered furnishings are also available in semi-custom selections, offering a middle ground for shoppers who desire a quicker turnaround time—typically, four to six weeks. Choose from available frame options and make it your own by selecting the fabric, size, and filling material. Customizing sofas, chairs, and beds allows you to design around your personal style and comfort needs. Lighting is another great opportunity to bring some personality to a room. A custom lampshade in just the right fabric and size can be the perfect finishing touch to a well-appointed room. If you’re a business owner, custom furnishings for the office allow you to design your space to reflect your brand. How you decorate your office sets the tone for how employees and clients perceive your business. A conference table topped with a polished mahogany slab, for instance, lends a significantly different feel to the room than a table made out of reclaimed barn doors. Custom furniture is a great way to let your clients know what kind of business you’re running. Investing in custom furnishings means your pieces will continue to appreciate over time, unlike mass-produced items that begin to depreciate the moment they are loaded onto a truck for delivery to your home. Furniture makers in your local community are skilled crafts people who can create any conceivable style and are equipped to use concepts, techniques, and materials you won’t find from a large manufacturer. Interior decorators, designers, and even custom home builders can often make great referrals for custom furniture makers— just ask them who they’ve enjoyed working with in the past. By working with experienced professionals, you will have the comfort of knowing where, when, and how your furniture was made. The excitement of commissioning a piece of custom furniture is rivaled by very few other purchases, delivering long-lasting pleasure to you, your family, and guests in your home. Out and About
Dr. Jeffrey Blixt Holistic Physician-Managed Weight Loss By Ariel Heart
We’ve all heard the statistic: More than two thirds of American adults are overweight or obese. This indicates that serious weight problems are an epidemic in the United States. Obesity typically leads to further health conditions, such as diabetes, arthritis, and sleep apnea, to name just a few. The American weight loss and diet control industry has cashed in on this epidemic, with estimated revenue of $66 billion in 2017. Yet, despite all that money on fad diets, pre-packaged diet meal delivery, or the latest system or book, the statistics haven’t significantly changed. Enter Dr. Jeffrey K. Blixt and his physicianmanaged weight loss program. He is a doctor of osteopathy (DO) and was a family practice doctor before specializing in weight loss. As a DO, he uses the bio-psycho-social model in his practice. This means he takes a holistic approach with his patients, which is important because what you eat is not the only thing that affects your weight! Dr. Blixt takes a “big picture” view of your lifestyle and how it impacts your weight. It’s smart to eat right and exercise, but that’s not the whole solution—every case is unique, he says, and there are many factors that contribute to weight gain. “Being a family practice doctor is one of the hardest jobs there is,” Dr. Blixt shares. “You have to be a jack-of-all-trades.” After spending time in this type of broad focus practice, he realized he wanted to zero in on helping with specific areas and spend more time with each patient. In 2000, he took over his father’s practice and now specializes in weight loss medicine. His family medicine background is an advantage in his weight loss practice—because of his broad experience, he’s likely to pick up on things like pre-diabetes or other conditions that are impacting weight but may not have been diagnosed previously. His patients enjoy a program that is tailored to their particular needs. There is no one-size-fits-all method mindset. Around 80 percent of his patients are women, and they range in age from 18 to 60 years. The early 20s are a common time for women to come in. Many women who didn’t have weight problems as teenagers start to gain weight in their 20s because they are no longer developing hormonally. Some patients in this age group are hoping to lose weight that they put on during pregnancy. As a new patient, you can expect to provide your medical history, undergo a physical exam, review any medications, and, perhaps, have some blood work done. During your consultation, Dr.
24
Blixt will focus on your lifestyle and eating habits. Based on the preliminary results, he’ll develop a specialized approach of diet and medication just for you. Dr. Blixt also takes care to address negative and self-defeating attitudes that often sabotage efforts to lose weight. “People feel they are failing their diets. You’re not failing your diet—you have a lot happening in your life. It’s okay to not be perfect. It’s okay to have a bad day.” Many of us have felt that sense of frustration or failure when the numbers on the scale won’t budge. Dr. Blixt encourages us to think beyond the numbers and to give ourselves a break. “I’m a big believer in mindfulness,” Dr. Blixt says. “I tell a lot of my patients, when they get hard on themselves, ‘I want you to start treating yourself like you would treat your best friends if they were struggling.’” With his encouraging, holistic medical approach, it is no surprise that Dr. Blixt has received the Patients’ Choice Award for 2010, 2011, 2014, 2016, and 2018, plus the Compassionate Doctor Recognition Award for 2011, 2016, and 2018. Emily Neel started working with Dr. Blixt’s father in 2000 and stayed when Dr. Blixt took over the practice. Emily loves making a difference in patients’ lives and working as a team with Dr. Blixt. She is proud of the encouraging and non-judgmental office environment and loves hearing positive feedback from patients. Dr Blixt lives with his wife and two sons near where he grew up in Colorado Springs. He enjoys hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, running, and camping. Emily is originally from California but relocated when her husband’s company moved here 25 years ago. She may not have grown up here, but she feels like she’s a native now. She loves taking drives through the mountains. Call 719-896-4794 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Blixt. His office is located at 1715 North Weber Drive, Suite 260, in Colorado Springs. A Beautiful Smile Sinking Your Teeth Into Oral Surgery
By Loretta McCollum
“When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you,” Louis Armstrong sang. He was right— a smile can instantly brighten a gloomy day or lighten a dark mood. Having a great smile means having healthy teeth and gums. If missing or crowded teeth are hampering your smile, dental implants or wisdom tooth removal may be the right choice for you. These procedures are known as oral surgery. There are many reasons for teeth to be missing—commonly, the problem is due to injury or decay. It’s also not uncommon to be born missing some of your permanent teeth. Missing teeth cause an obvious cosmetic concern, but they can also lead to serious oral health problems. Remaining teeth may shift in an attempt to fill the gap, making oral hygiene difficult and increasing the risk for decay and gum disease. Jaw function can be affected. When teeth are missing, the jaw may shrink, changing facial shape and, possibly, leading to more tooth loss. Dental implant surgery is a restorative procedure that preserves the existing jawbone and stimulates bone growth. Dental implants feel and function like natural teeth, and they can last for decades. They won’t slip or click, allowing patients to maintain their natural speech patterns. Adjacent teeth do not need to be ground down to anchor tooth replacements. Dental implants are growing in popularity— over three million people in the U.S. have at least one. The procedure typically involves surgically implanting a screw-shaped titanium rod into the jawbone. Over the next few months, the jawbone grows around the implant, creating an artificial root that is not unlike a natural tooth root. When the implant has bonded to the jawbone, a connector called an abutment is placed on the implant, just above the gumline. Mouth impressions are taken, and artificial teeth (crowns) are created and attached to the abutments. The entire process takes up to a year. Routine checkups and cleaning are still required, but patients need not be concerned about avoiding certain foods. Variations exist for patients who may not have enough healthy jawbone to support the implant or who are missing multiple teeth. Bone augmentation, involving the use of bone grafts or growth factors, increases jawbone strength, helping to secure the implant. A subperiosteal implant is a good choice to cover a large area. In this method, a metal framework is attached under the gumline, just above the jawbone. Replacement teeth will be anchored to metal posts protruding from the framework. Implants are not routinely covered by dental insurance, but more companies are rethinking coverage. In some cases, health insurance may cover a portion of the cost, and many practices offer financing options. Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars to develop, typically making their appearance sometime between our late teens and early 20s. It’s believed that wisdom teeth were used by our ancestors to aid in chewing raw meats, roots, and nuts. With today’s softer, more refined diet, these teeth are no longer needed for survival
and are notorious for causing problems, which is why 85 percent of the population has them removed. Most of the time, there is just no room for them. They crowd our other teeth, making it difficult to clean around them, which increases the risk for tooth decay. They often come in misaligned, damaging the adjacent teeth and causing jawbone or nerve damage. They may be impacted, meaning that they only partially break through the gums, leaving an opening for bacteria to enter, causing infection, pain, and swelling. Early removal is recommended, before the roots can become fully developed. If the tooth is fully erupted through the gum, removal can be as simple as any other tooth extraction. If the tooth is impacted, an incision needs to be made into the gum, and the tooth may need to be removed in sections. Recovery depends on the difficulty of the extraction. Bleeding may occur for several hours after removal. Packing the empty socket with gauze is standard procedure. It’s important to avoid spitting or sucking (including smoking), as these activities can dislodge the blood clot, causing dry socket to develop. This is a painful condition that requires treatment with medication. Facial swelling and bruising may also occur, particularly if the tooth was impacted. Your oral surgeon will likely recommend that you take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain, eat a soft diet for a few days, and rinse your mouth with warm salt water. If oral surgery is in your future, consult the experts. Periodontists, prosthodontists, and maxillofacial surgeons specialize in implants and tooth extraction. Ask your regular dentist for a referral. Proper oral care will keep you flashing those pearly whites for years to come. The Good Life
The Power of Dance Shimmy Your Way to Health and Happiness Holly Tierney-Bedord
You’ve probably heard the African proverb “If you can walk, you can dance. If you can talk, you can sing.” I remember seeing that years ago and thinking that it didn’t ring true—at least, not for me. Like many people, I suffered from self-consciousness and was unable to see that singing and dancing are expressions of joy and don’t have to be about displaying your talent. Who hasn’t seen a toddler, too young to be concerned with what others think, bopping along to music? They’re reminding us of something we all used to know, when we were their age: Dancing is one of the most basic human expressions of joy and happiness. Whether or not you’re a great dancer, you should get out there and enjoy it. Dancing has many physical health benefits, including burning calories, strengthening muscles, and improving balance and coordination. It also provides the psychological benefits of building confidence, making stronger social connections, and releasing endorphins, which can help fight depression. Enrolling kids in dance classes is a great idea—the sooner they become comfortable dancing, the more likely it will develop into a lifelong love. It’s never too soon to start! Luckily for those of us who missed out on formal childhood dance instruction, it’s also never too late to start. Dance instructors are used to seeing people of all ages and skill levels. Even seniors can take beginners’ lessons in all styles, from tap

to ballet to jazz and more. You can participate solo or with a partner. Just like many people would rather follow a recipe than cook without a plan, many people find that following structured, specific steps makes learning to dance less intimidating. However, if you prefer to do your own steps, a looser approach that’s more about getting your blood pumping may be a better fit for you. Call your local dance studio and ask for advice, making it clear what your goals are. Someone who wants to learn ballroom dancing for an upcoming wedding will have a completely different agenda than someone who just wants to burn some calories and blow off some steam. If you watch shows like Dancing with the Stars, you’re probably familiar with many styles of ballroom dance, including waltz, foxtrot, tango, quickstep, rumba, cha cha, swing, jive,
www.womensedition.com
samba, mambo, and more. Less traditional dances include things like country two-step, salsa, the Lindy hop, the Charleston, and many more. Competitive dancers like the ones on that show have made a life and career out of their dance skills and dedication. They travel the world, showing off their talents and inspiring others. What’s fascinating is that dancing, like music, is truly a language of its own. Two classically trained dancers may not be able to speak a word to each other but can come together to communicate by dancing in a perfectly clear, expressive way. While these ballroom dances are beautiful, they can look a little intimidating. Also, they require dancing with a partner (although you don’t necessarily need a partner to sign up for lessons). If ballroom dancing isn’t for you, you have many other options. You can probably picture many types of dance, like tap, ballet, belly dancing, folk dancing, square dancing, Irish step dancing, breakdancing, and more. To connect with your heritage, consider learning more about the native dances of your own ancestors. There are so many options! Once you uncover a passion for dance, you’ll never have to stop learning. If you’re unsure what style of dance is right for you, call up your local dance studio to chat about your goals. Once you’re ready to jump in, you have plenty of ways to make it happen. Most cities have a variety of dance studios. It’s also not uncommon for schools, colleges, and community centers to offer dance classes. People may also form inhome dance clubs. For instance, the dance troupes you see performing in parades and at summer festivals may be privately organized and meet at someone’s home. There are also people who offer private, inhome dance lessons. The bottom line is: If you want to dance, dance! Don’t let self-consciousness hold you back from the joy of dancing (not to mention the physical and mental health benefits). Consider taking some lessons if that will give you the confidence you need to break through and get out there on the dance floor the next time a wedding or party rolls around. While you’re building your confidence, practice at home in the mirror. Whatever you do, don’t let fear of embarrassment stop you from enjoying the many benefits of dancing. Welcoming Dr. Jason Weisstein Colorado Center of Orthopaedic Excellence By Brenda Gracely
The Colorado Center of Orthopaedic Excellence welcomes Jason Weisstein, MD, MPH, FACS, to its group of orthopaedic specialists. Dr. Weisstein is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in bone and soft tissue tumors as well as hip and knee replacements. His early career was spent as an assistant professor of orthopaedics at the University of Washington, where he had a dual appointment in joint arthroplasty and orthopaedic oncology services. While there, he trained residents and fellows and also co-directed the fellowship in orthopaedic oncology. Subsequently, he has been in private practice, maintaining a busy clinical schedule and directing several large joint replacement programs around the country. His dual background has enabled him to provide state-of-the-art care for difficult cases that involve revision of failed joint replacements and complex limb salvage. “Since a young age, I had an interest in becoming a physician,” explains Dr. Weisstein. “I originally took an interest in orthopaedic surgery when I was studying
for my master’s degree in public health at Columbia University. I worked with orthopaedic surgeons who were looking at repetitive stress disorders in the upper extremities and was fortunate to observe many orthopaedic procedures that piqued my interest. I entered medical school knowing that this would be my subspecialty.” Dr. Weisstein is a special addition to the Colorado Center for Orthopaedic Excellence in Colorado Springs—before he arrived, the nearest specialist for bone and soft tissue tumors was in Denver. “While the majority of bone and soft tissue tumors are benign,” Dr. Weisstein points out, “there

are some called sarcomas that are malignant and potentially life-threatening. They can happen in children and adults but are especially common in the growing skeletons of adolescents. In adults, the most common malignant tumors I see are metastatic, meaning that they traveled from another site, usually the breast, lung, prostate, or kidney, to the bones. I also care for patients with cancer who have side effects from their treatment that affect the skeleton. I am looking forward to offering this service so that people do not have to travel to Denver for orthopaedic oncology care.” Dr. Weisstein also has expertise in direct anterior hip replacement. This surgery avoids cutting through muscle, provides greater precision of component placement, and enables patients to recover faster and with less pain. Only a small percentage of orthopaedic surgeons offer this musclesparing surgical approach, and even fewer teach it regularly to other orthopaedic surgeons. Another of Dr. Weisstein’s specialties is customized knee replacement surgeries, in which a gel mold of the patient’s knee is made. Because the precise size of the patient’s implant is known before the surgery even starts, the surgery can be performed with improved accuracy and speed. Dr. Weisstein highly values the doctor/patient relationship and the ability to provide state-of-the-art surgery along with personalized attention. “I look at patients as extended family members and always try to make treatment decisions with this in mind,” Dr. Weisstein says. “I am a big believer in not ‘treating the x-ray.’ Just because an x-ray shows arthritis does not mean that surgery is needed! The key to successful treatment is individualizing care and understanding
each patient’s unique needs. Almost always, I start with a conservative approach and only recommend surgery if conservative care fails. I never want patients to feel as if they are part of a factory line.” At Colorado Center of Orthopaedic Excellence, the team strives to provide patients with comprehensive orthopaedic excellence. The physicians and staff work in a collaborative setting to provide excellent care and service for patients of all ages and activity levels. Their mission is to achieve optimal results for each patient through a team approach, with services including arthroscopy, arthritis treatment, shoulder and elbow surgery, foot and ankle surgery, joint replacement, hip and knee surgery, hand and wrist surgery, microvascular surgery, treatment for orthopaedic trauma and fracture care, podiatry, physical therapy, and sports medicine. For patients’ convenience, radiology, physical therapy, and rehabilitation services are available on site at both clinic locations. All the physicians have undergone an additional year of fellowship training in a sub-specialty, going above and beyond the standard to become orthopaedic physicians. Colorado Center of Orthopaedic Excellence is home to doctors with fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery, joint reconstruction, hand and wrist surgery, and sports medicine. The physicians at Colorado Center of Orthopaedic Excellence pride themselves on providing care that is highly competent and is delivered with compassion and respect. Go Ahead, Take a Shot Listen to Your Inner Being “One hundred percent of the shots you don’t take don’t go in.” —Wayne Gretzky Making a decision to “take our shot” requires a certain sense of courage. We may look at our current life situation and see that we have more than most people on the planet do. Is it even fair that we still want more? Yes, we have an idea, but is it worth the risk? “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” —Eleanor Roosevelt
By Janet Van deWalle
So, how do we know it’s the right thing to do? What if that little voice was right—and we just argued it to death? The best advice I’ve ever received on making these kinds of decisions came from my mother. She once said, “Feel your way through—listen to your gut. “ Now, growing up, like most of us, I’d been told by many of my elders to get my heart out of big decisions, and use my head. I was told to look at the “pros and cons”and analyze them until the “logical” decision became apparent. My mother, on the other hand, gave me permission to listen to my Inner Being. Thanks Mom! “The universe is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.”—Eden Phillpotts
When we are contemplating taking out shot, what a lot of us experience is that annoying little voice in our heads that pops up and starts saying things like: “It will never work…you can’t succeed…what makes you think you’re worthy of all that?” Most of the time that is when we decide to shelve our dreams. Taking our shot is a decision that each of us has to make on our own. Only we can work through the demons. Yes, we can discuss it with our spouse, family, friends, coworkers, but, when all is said and done, it comes down to us.
When we finally allow ourselves to listen to our Inner Being we will KNOW that we have chosen the right path. All the doubts will be gone, and the “little voice” will forever be silenced on this topic. We will be able to take our shot with the confidence that we will make it. We will know that no matter how many shots it takes, we will make it our reality.
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great ones make you feel that you too, can become great.” —Mark Twain

Digging into Family History Unfurling Leaves on the Family Tree Have you looked into your family history? I have always known more about my mother’s side of the family than my father’s. For my birthday, my kids gave me a DNA kit designed to determine ancestry. These genetic results were not surprising, considering what I know of my ancestors. Mom’s cousin traced the family origins to Luxembourg and created a family tree dating back to 1872. His research passed through various cousins and eventually landed with me. I now have many projects, including going through and labeling family pictures and compiling a narrative family history. A lot of the work has been done. Fortunately, I shared hours with Mom and her siblings, telling family stories and going through old photographs. My kids have shown an interest in finding out more about their ancestors. They know most of Mom’s siblings and many of my first cousins through regularly held family reunions. This project will be a labor of love. We know less of Dad’s family. We seldom met with his parents, his sisters, and their families during our growing-up years. These gatherings were shorter and less informative than those with Mom’s family. Fewer stories were told. The treasure trove of photographs was less evident. I’ve lost touch with the cousins on that side of the family. My kids have only had the opportunity to meet that side of the family a few times. One of the benefits of submitting to the DNA research is the

possibility of finding long-lost relatives. On getting my genetic results, I made some brief entries with the information I knew to be true about Dad’s family—mostly names and some birth places, with very few birth dates or other specific information. I wasn’t too sure what results my sketchy information would bring. Surprisingly, I heard from a third cousin from Dad’s side of the family. His initial email mentioned that we were related through my grandfather. (His mother and my father were second cousins.) His grandmother’s name was familiar from letters Mom had kept over the years. Now I can add to Dad’s side of our family history! I wish I knew more about my husband’s family. I know some names and relationships. I do know some of his first cousins who might help…at least with his mom’s side of the family. His dad’s side has more blanks and fewer resources. Research will help the family tree grow. Why am I sharing this experience with you? My kids have often commented that they wish they knew more about the other family relatives. A window has been opened. I hope to fill in some blanks for the kids. We’ll look at pictures, read letters, and share. Have your kids shown an interest? What do you know about your family ancestry? The time to start researching is when older relatives are still around. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Real Deals on Home Décor Accentuate Your Inner Vision By Cheryl Lassota
Seasonal décor, fine art, steamer trunks, curvy clothes, glam jewelry—Real Deals on Home Décor is a delight. Take a stroll through the ever-changing, enchanting vignettes, from farmhouse to bath to boutique, to awaken your imagination and to enhance the ambience of your home. “I want people to have fun when they come in, to recall fond memories, perhaps of childhood or a family home,” says owner Robyn Rogers Flak. Robyn has instant rapport with visitors. “This is not just a store,” she says. “It’s also a meeting place to chat with friends, to get creative ideas, or to take a class.” Returning shopper Diane shares, “I like the comfortable feeling that you can take your time. The combination of a boutique with home décor is fun!” Another shopper comments, “Beautiful, just beautiful. One of the things I sensed immediately was the very European feel. I haven’t been able to find exactly what I’m looking for anywhere, but Robyn has the perfect selection.” Robyn has even created a French Flower Shoppe within her store. “We group things so that people can visualize how they look together. You can make arrangements with everything at your fingertips, or I will do a display for you,” Robyn offers. “My 23 years in real estate and home staging transitioned to owning Real Deals,” Robyn continues. “Whether you are a seasoned decorator or want to be, we can help you realize your decorating dreams.” She and her husband, Mark, have lived in Colorado Springs since 1995. They met when he was stationed with the Air Force in her native Australia. “He says I’m his favorite Australian souvenir,” she quips. “Taking over Real Deals last spring is a commitment to a community we love.” Robyn’s daughter, Bethaney, is an illustrator and a pastry chef, and she teaches the store’s craft classes. “Together, we offer unique, value-driven design and home décor,” says Robyn. She shared this passion with her mom, June Mills. “It was my lifelong dream to have a decorating store, so my mother and daughter could work with me.” Sadly, her mother has passed away. Robyn points to a beautifully framed photo of June. “Mom’s spirit is here. I say hi to her every morning.” Abby Prince, Robyn’s hairstylist, helped with the shop renovation and then transitioned to retail sales. “I am right-brained, so this gives me an opportunity to be creative and artistic,” Abby says, while plaster-painting a plaid-like pattern on a dresser. “Every day is different. We have things that may seem unusual, but they fly out of here and people share pictures of them in their homes or yards!” Real Deals carries ONE STEP plaster paint and offers instruction in its use. “It is even easier to use
34
than chalk paint. It is self-leveling and results in a smoother finish,” Robyn shares. “No sanding, stripping, or priming is needed, and there are durable, optional waxes, similar to the sealers put on surfboards.” They have brushes, water-based stains, and a new glitter paint. Customers are encouraged to work on their pieces at the store, learning to mix and match colors in multiple layers. “Our home décor and fashion are so fresh and affordable that what you see in our store today may not be here next week,” Robyn emphasizes. She has the latest styles of reasonably-priced footwear as well as comfy tops, jeans, scarves, camisoles, and graphic tees in sizes small to 3XL. “Everyone snags a piece or two of the fun jewelry,” Robyn mentions. She pauses to greet Helen, who is new to the store. “I had some time to stop by, and I’m glad I did,” Helen says. “I want to change the face of my home after 10 years, and I like what I see. I’m pleasantly surprised that they carry clothing, too, so I’m going to be here a while!” Kayla, visiting from out of town, posts this on Facebook: “I stumbled upon this amazing find, drawn in by their displays. You can have a Pinterest-worthy home with their help! Beautiful finds, pleasant staff, and budget-friendly prices. I’m beyond impressed!” There’s a saying I love that goes: “Be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” Real Deals on Home Décor is reflective of Robyn’s multifaceted world as a grandmother who loves travel and entertaining, volunteers for Habitat for Humanity, collects clocks, and shares her home with two springer spaniels. Of course, she also stocks stunning candles and mirrors! Visit her haven for domestic dreamers and check out Real Deal classes, events, and Ladies Nights showcasing products like JAK seasonings and ONEHOPE wines. Meet Robyn at 5566 North Academy Boulevard, in Colorado Springs. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Could Fish Be in Your Future? Aquarium Care 101 By Elizabeth French
With no limits but the imagination, aquariums are emerging as focal points in commercial lobbies, as elaborate inlaid headboards, or even as unique conversation pieces fit under staircases. With tanks of all sizes and fish of all colors, an aquarium can create a feeling of relaxation and tranquility by housing a dazzling array of coral, leafy plants, and fish. Before embarking on your aquarium design quest, however, it is essential to know the basic ins and outs of the type of fish you want as well as their individual care requirements. An aquarium is a long-term investment; most fish, depending on breed and care, can live between five and 10 years. As with owning any pets, it takes time and dedication to keep an aquarium in tip-top condition for the sake of your aquatic beauties. Generally speaking, the bigger the tank is, the more maintenance and care it will need to keep its filtration system clean. For beginners, especially families with children or other pets, the best starter aquarium is a small one (with a lid for prying paws and fingers). With a tank that holds between one and 10 gallons of water, weekly maintenance can be as easy as cleaning the filter, changing out some of the water, and removing built-up residue. For younger children, an aquarium can create the perfect opportunity to learn the responsibilities of caring for a pet. If you decide to go with a grander aquarium and a more opulent marine display, there are a few additional steps that need to be taken before your fish can move in. If you opt for a freshwater aquarium, you must first set up the aquarium (filled with water) and let the filter run for at least 24 hours. This will allow the good and bad bacteria in the aquarium to balance out. After that, you can add in a small number of hardy fish, such as danios or gourami, that can withstand a certain amount of ammonia and nitrites in the water. These small fish are generally non-aggressive and can get along with other fish in the vicinity. Some other freshwater fish that are very popular include neon tetras, guppies, oscars (known to perform “tricks” and eat directly from the hand), mollies (watch out—they breed like bunnies!), platies, discus, and bettas. Not all these fish live harmoniously, so it is essential to do your research before buying a particular breed. You should never buy a fish simply because of its looks! Each species has its own set of care instructions; the more extensive these requirements, the more expensive it will be to care for your fishy friends. To care for a larger aquarium, be sure to check the temperature and pH levels daily. Weekly, replace at least 10 percent of the current water supply with fresh, clean water and clean away any residual algae that may have built up. Monthly, replace 25 percent of the tank’s water with clean water, inspect or replace the filter components, and trim growing plants (if necessary). For tanks under
55 gallons, an under-gravel filter or an external power filter is recommended to cycle the water continuously and draw out impurities. A saltwater aquarium offers the exquisite beauty of saltwater fish, but there are many important factors to consider before making the costly and time-consuming decision to care for a saltwater aquarium. First of all: If the care and maintenance of a freshwater tank sounds like a lot, saltwater tank maintenance will make it seem like a walk in the park. Also, the cost to set up a saltwater aquarium is significantly higher than a freshwater tank. However, because of the element of saline in the water, owners have the fascinating option of growing a coral reef in their aquariums. Of course, there’s also the benefit of raising some stunning saltwater fish. The most beautiful schooling saltwater fish are the tiny neon tetras, which are red with a neon blue stripe. Coral beauty angelfish, butterfly fish, clown fish, tangs, fire-fish, and dottybacks are all vibrantly colored and will create a symphony of color in any lobby or living space. Keep in mind that the rarity and beauty of saltwater fish can raise the price of your aquarium even more—prices can reach over $100 for a single fish, and some of them are not sold in pet stores. Consider starting an aquarium! It’s a great way to bring beauty to your home or office and to teach your kids about the responsibilities of pet ownership. As you likely know if you’ve ever gazed into an aquarium, watching fish can induce a meditative state with all its potential benefits, including lower blood pressure and decreased stress and anxiety. A Glimmer of Hope for Life Reproductive Medicine
By Connie Keck
Fertility refers to the natural ability to produce offspring. Conception takes place when the sperm fertilizes the egg. This is often a fairly straightforward process, and many couples don’t give it much thought… until they are surprised to find themselves having trouble getting pregnant. The field of reproductive medicine is dedicated to helping couples conceive. Most women assume that their bodies will cooperate with their plans to become mothers at whatever time they choose. Unfortunately, not every woman has an unimpeded path to pregnancy, and some may wonder how long to wait before exploring reproductive medicine options. Infertility is generally diagnosed when a couple tries to conceive in the traditional way for 12 consecutive months with no resulting viable pregnancy. An evaluation for both the woman and the man can provide helpful and important information about their reproductive potential. About 10 percent of women (6.1 million) in the United States ages 15–44 have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Infertility has many causes (and, sometimes, more than one at a time). Some causes of infertility include fallopian tube damage or blockage, impaired sperm production or function, ovulation disorders, uterine fibrosis, endometriosis, previous tubal sterilization or removal, and radiation treatment for cancer or other health conditions. With recent advancements in medical technology, there is hope
for couples who are having difficulty conceiving a child. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology (ART). With IVF, an egg is extracted from the woman and a sperm sample is taken from the man. The egg and sperm are combined manually in the laboratory, and the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterus. With this treatment, the sperm and egg can come from the parents or from other egg or sperm donors. IVF is not universally successful, and, as with traditional conception, your chances of a viable pregnancy decrease as you age. In the United States, the live birth rate for each IVF cycle started is approximately 41–43 percent for women younger than 35 years, 33– 36 percent for women aged 35–37 years, 23–27 percent for women ages 38–40, and 13–18 percent for women over 40 years of age. Cryopreservation is a method used to preserve reproductive potential in women. With oocyte cryopreservation, also known as egg freezing, eggs are harvested from a woman’s ovaries, frozen

unfertilized, and stored for later use. This might be an option if you’re not ready to become pregnant now but want to have a biological child in the future, even if you haven’t found your partner yet. A frozen egg can be thawed, combined with sperm in a lab, and implanted in your uterus (through IVF). Embryo cryopreservation is a related procedure, in which the extracted eggs are fertilized but are then frozen for future implantation instead of being implanted in the uterus at the time of fertilization. With both egg freezing and embryo freezing, you’ll need to use fertility drugs to induce ovulation so that you’ll produce multiple eggs for retrieval.Your physician can help you understand the potential risks of both of these procedures and which one might be right for you, based on your personal reproductive history and familybuilding goals. Cryopreservation is often discussed for women who are preparing to undergo radiation treatment or other treatments that may damage the eggs in their ovaries. Patients who need fertility support but do not want to use assisted reproductive technologies like IVF might consider what is known as natural procreative technology. This approach involves assessing the underlying causes of the reproductive abnormality and addressing them with medical and surgical treatments. The goal is to achieve a viable pregnancy through sexual intercourse. Infertility can be a long and difficult road to travel, and you need a physician or fertility clinic that is the right fit for you. Make appointments with a few different places and ask plenty of questions. Are the practitioners board-certified reproductive endocrinologists or infertility specialists? Do they take the time to answer your questions with compassion? What tests and treatments do they use? You’ll also need some financial questions answered, including what the overall costs are, whether they accept insurance or have a payment program, and whether they offer any type of IVF refund program. If you and your partner are having trouble conceiving, don’t lose hope. When you are ready to consider alternative methods to achieve pregnancy, there is help available. The family you’re dreaming of may still be in your future. Pest Control Defend Your Home Against Unwanted Guests
By Anne Yankus
We call them pests for a reason. They invade our homes, they make a mess, and they can even have adverse effects on our health! Fortunately, we live in an age when we don’t have to just hope that the cat will eat whatever critter is crawling in the rafters—we can call in a pest control professional. As they say, the best offense is a good defense, and there are many preventative measures that will deter pests from staying in your yard and entering your home. The EPA recommends starting with various forms of pest prevention like removing access to sources of food, water, and shelter. This can be accomplished by making sure all food and scraps are stored in sealed containers or bags, by preventing water from accumulating in and around the home, and by closing off any places in your home or yard where pests could enter and hide. Of course, a good defense only goes so far; eventually, you may need to look into an adequate pest control solution. There are many kinds of pest control on the market, so it’s important to know what’s what in order to choose the best kind of control for you and your home. Pesticides are the most common type of pest control. These substances are regulated by the EPA and can be divided into microbial (which contain bacteria, viruses, or fungi) and chemical (natural or synthetic). For common insects and arachnids, most pest control companies recommend regular treatments. Whether or not year-round treatments are necessary depends, in part, on the climate in your area. If you live in an area with warm winters, looking into having your house and yard sprayed every couple of months isn’t a bad idea. However, if you live in a part of the country that freezes over every winter, you should be able to get away with spraying only during warmer weather. Before choosing a company to spray your home, consider the safety of any pets and children who live with you. Ask your pest control experts whether or not their pesticides are safe for humans and pets and what long-term effects their products could have on the environment. Ask about their certifications and licensure—some pesticides can only be used by certified applicators. Ants and spiders aren’t the only bugs you need to watch out for—termites are the bane of homeowners. Experts recommend having your house checked for termites annually. If you spot any signs of increased termite activity, such as mud tubes, sagging floors and ceilings, termite excrement, or discarded wings, don’t wait for your annual checkup! Call your pest control professional right away. The mosquito is the natural enemy of any red-

blooded mammal, but several preventative measures will help keep mosquitoes at bay. Mosquitoes escape the daytime heat by hiding in the shade, so keeping your hedges trimmed and your grass cut can help reduce their numbers. You’ll also want to get rid of any standing water, which is the ideal mosquito breeding ground. If you must have standing water around (for pools or water features), be sure to treat it with some form of larvicide or stock it with mosquito-eating fish to keep the population from growing. You can also reduce the mosquito population by making your yard friendlier for their natural predators (like bats, dragonflies, or swallows). Why go through so much effort to eliminate this nuisance? Why not just bug-bomb the whole yard? Unfortunately, mosquitoes are integrated into our ecosystem in such a way that simply spraying pesticides to eliminate mosquitoes would cause more harm than benefit to the environment at large. Experts recommend using pesticide sprays only in cases of large-scale infestations. Bugs aren’t the only pests in our lives. Mammalian pests require significantly different solutions. As with insect control, prevention is the best first step toward keeping intruders such as mice, raccoons, bats, or squirrels out of your attic or basement. Rotten wood, loose shingles, or small gaps on the exterior of your home are basically welcome mats for local rodents, so be sure to inspect and repair your home regularly. Keeping tree branches trimmed back, away from your home, can also stop animals from sneaking into your attic. If some critter still manages to get in, do a little research before hiring an animal removal service. Be sure to confirm whether your expert is being hired for a basic removal or for a full-service removal and repair or prevention job. Make sure to check that the company you call can handle the animal you have in your house. Also, different companies have different trapping methodologies (some more humane than others). Positive Perspective
An Effective Team
Getting People to Engage
By Janet Van deWalle
Whether you are a business owner, manager, or simply someone who wants the most out of your career, there are certain things we can all do to help create a more enjoyable and productive work environment. The question then becomes: What do we do, and how do we do it? If you are looking to become more engaged in your job or to help others become more involved, here are a few suggestions. Be accessible. Everyone is busy, but realize the importance of taking time to answer questions, and share new experiences. This is especially important if you are in a leadership position. Your team needs to know that you have time for them, that they are important. If you can’t break free at that moment because of a meeting or other obligation, make sure to come back to them as soon as possible. Following up as soon as you can shows that they are important to you and to the company.
work lives. I’m not saying to act as a sounding board for all of their life problems, but sometimes just knowing that there is a support system within the company can help put people at ease. On the flip side, share a bit about yourself, as well. This will help to create a true bond, and, through that relationship, trust can grow. A strong relationship will help you all grow and learn. It will also enable you to have the harder conversations if they are needed. Be real. No one is an island, and showing that you, too, can be vulnerable allows your team to see that you are not perfect. If you make a mistake, own it—don’t make excuses or put the blame on someone or something else. Remember it’s okay to admit that you don’t know things, and yes, there will be times that you don’t know what you don’t know. Most importantly, don’t let your ego get involved. People don’t like to work with or for people who they feel talk down to them.
“Talk is by far the most accessible of pleasures. It costs nothing in money; it is all profit; it completes our education; founds and fosters our friendships; and can be enjoyed in almost any state of health.”—Robert Louis Stevenson
“Ego stops you from getting things done and getting people to work with you. That’s why I firmly believe that ego and success are not compatible.” —Harvey Mackay
Get to know your team. Show genuine interest in people. Each person has his or her own life situations, and it is unrealistic to think things that happen outside of work don’t influence people’s
