As the fat drains from the fat cells, the cells shrink, resulting in inch loss from the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and more. Though inch loss can be seen after one treatment, multiple treatments are recommended. Targets total body or spot reduction. No downtime is required. Treatments take 20 minutes.

Editor’s Notes

August Already! Where Did the Time Go? On Saturday morning, I slid my front porch door open and stepped outside to welcome the warm sunshine. Once outside, I closed my eyes and heard the birds chirping, then sank into my favorite over-stuffed wrought iron rocker and sipped my tea. Ahhh…my quiet place! My favorite place on summer mornings because time seems to stand still when I am there. A couple of weekends ago, it was quite different. When I stepped out onto my front porch, I heard kids and adults talking and laughing down the street. This day ushered in the neighborhood’s annual Ice Cream Social. I joined them in carrying our lawn chairs, watermelon, cookies, and ice cream toppings to the tent that was erected on the freshly cut grass within our community. As we served ourselves from the loaded table of goodies, we talked about what we had been doing with our time over the summer. We shared stories of our fun activities, vacations, how our jobs were going, how fast all the kids are growing up, and, of course, the weather this time of year. Everyone agreed that this summer is going by too fast. Time is flying by! Before we know it, the kids will be heading back for another new school year. Time is an interesting thing. It’s not something we can touch or taste or feel, but it is a valuable gift. We think we can save it, we often squander it, there are moments when it seems to stand still (I wish it would more often when I am in my happy place on my front porch), but every minute of our lives, we are spending it. Time isn’t yesterday or tomorrow. Yesterday is a memory and tomorrow is a hope, a goal, a plan. But today—right now—is what we’ve got. At the Ice Cream Social, my neighbors and I talked about our kids and their futures, how exciting it is that they have their whole lives ahead of them. Time is on their side. But when I think about it, time is on my side, too. I have the same “now” that everyone has. I get to decide how best to use it. We here at Women’s Edition know, dear readers, that your time is valuable, as well. We thank you for taking some of that valuable time to enjoy our magazine. I promise it will be time well spent! Enjoy the rest of your summer. Until next time…

Simplify Summer Fashion Make Time to Stop and Smell the Roses By Holly Bell

Summer in the Midwest is a time to slow down and smell the roses, the scent of newly cut grass, or just the freshness in the air. This year, we vow to enjoy it more, as it flies by so quickly. Taking time to enjoy the wonder of summer calms our minds and nourishes our bodies. One way to make more time to relax is to simplify your daily routines. Fashion can be simplified for the warmer months, when we don’t want to spend a lot of time indoors, putting together outfits. During the colder months, it is time-consuming to put on layer after layer of clothing in order to keep warm, but we can’t really avoid it. In the summer, though, just one layer will do—sometimes, just one piece! From dressy to beachy casual, the jumpsuit has made a glorious comeback for summer 2017. Particularly flattering is the crisscrossed side-tie style. It mimics the famous Gloria Vanderbilt wrap dress that whittles the middle and gracefully drapes across the body. With a looser leg and a silky fabric, this piece could not be simpler, but it’s also elegant. Of course, there are unlimited twists on the jumpsuit. For the young at heart, there is the romper. When you think of a romper, it may first conjure up a vision of a 5-year-old, but rompers have grown up! The romper is a great vacation wardrobe addition; it’s easy and cute to pull over a swimsuit when you want to go into a restaurant but don’t have anywhere to change. One-piece summer fashion saves time by eliminating all the mixing and matching decisions we have to www.nomadictraders.com make when it’s cold outside. Another way to keep things simpler is to use one item several different ways. Essential for smarter vacation packing, multi-use pieces of clothing are also trending. The newest edition to this genre of clothing is the “luxe track pant.” Some of us may be skeptical about this, as it reminds us of our high school sports days, but the track pant is hot on runways worldwide. The secret to putting together this street style is to think of it as a smart pant. It pairs nicely with an off-theshoulder top and wedges, but it also looks good with sneakers and a tank top. With sportswear as a consistent theme for dressing this summer, effortless style is a hot trend. One thing I would advise against is wearing a complete tracksuit. Better to break up the jacket and pants to create stylish outfits that star each piece individually. My favorite summer onepiece dressing staple is the sundress. (If you find a great sundress that’s a little too bare, or if you’re expecting

a chillier evening, top it off with a sheer cardigan sweater or a short jean jacket.) Sundresses are youthful but not just for the young. Two of my favorite flattering silhouettes are the fit-and-flare and the chemise. If you have a curvy figure, the fit-and-flare will show off your curves in a most flattering way. If you are straight up and down, the chemise skims over your body with ease, creating a long, slim column. Another great cut for sundresses is the trapeze. This newer silhouette is more fitted throughout the shoulders and bust, flaring out to a triangle at the hem. This style is comfortable and easy to wear for most everyone. Fortunately, designers have finally decided to let us choose the hemline of our dresses. For those blessed with great legs, go ahead and go above the knee! Knee-length works for almost everyone. For a little elegance, go for the maxi or a calf-length dress. All lengths are fashionable now. Another fun thing about summer is color. Fashion designers currently favor bright colors and wild patterns, but, in the Midwest, there is very little color and pattern being worn. We Midwesterners can be quite rigid in our color choices, which makes the bolder looks from the runways a little unexpected here. Color and pattern are so on trend, and they can make a big impact that sets you apart from the crowd. As we enjoy the beauty and lushness of summer, let’s give ourselves the gift of simplicity. Put that to-do list away; it will wait. Take a moment to eat lunch outdoors. Park a few blocks away and enjoy the sunshine while you walk to your destination. Get a simple summer haircut, or just pull your hair up and twist it in a bun. Lighten up your makeup routine, and keep your wardrobe decisions quick and easy. As we know, summer doesn’t last nearly long enough in the Midwest. Let’s take the time to enjoy it while it’s here! In a large soup pot, heat 3 Tablespoons of olive oil and add a small chopped onion and the tomatoes. Cook on medium heat for 10 minutes. Add 4 cups of chicken broth and 2 Tablespoons of tomato paste. Pour the egg mixture into the flour mixture, and blend until just moistened. Add 2 cups of a combination of shredded yellow squash, zucchini, or carrots. Blend lightly. Pour into muffin tins. Bake at 350 degrees for 15–20 minutes. Makes 24 muffins. Lemon Rosemary Chicken Orzo In a deep-sided skillet or stock pot, heat 1 Tablespoon of olive oil. Add 1 cup of orzo and sauté until lightly browned. Return the chicken to the skillet. Add 2 cups of chicken or vegetable broth, along with a variety of cut-up seasonal vegetables: zucchini, squash, onions, carrots, celery, or canned artichoke hearts. Stir and bring to a boil. Add the juice of one lemon. Add more broth, if needed. Lower the heat to simmer, then cover and cook for 20 minutes. Add a handful of Kalamata olives, stir, and serve. Ruth’s Crab Louis Chopped Salad In a small bowl, mix 1 cup of mayonnaise with 1 Tablespoon of Dijon, a dash of honey or sugar, and 1 Tablespoon of sweet pickle juice (optional). Refrigerate. Wash, dry, and tear or chop one half of a head of iceberg or romaine lettuce, and mix with a bag of field greens. Place the greens in a bowl. Add 3 chopped-up hard-boiled eggs and 1 cup of (thawed) frozen peas. Add fresh veggies like sliced radishes and chopped onion, carrots, and celery. Sprinkle in salt and pepper to taste. Add 1–2 cans of crab meat (drained) or use cooked, fresh crab. Mix in the mayonnaise, then taste and adjust. Add sliced grape tomatoes and serve. Bourbon Chicken Mix one-fourth cup of bourbon (or apple juice) with one-fourth cup of brown sugar, 2 Tablespoons of ketchup, 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, one-half cup of water, one-third cup of soy sauce, and 1 Tablespoon of cornstarch. Set aside. Heat 2 Tablespoons of oil in a large pan. Add 2 pounds of boneless, skinless chicken thighs. Season with salt and pepper. Brown for 5 minutes (until pieces are golden). Add 3 cloves of minced garlic. Pour the sauce over the chicken (add more water, if

needed). Simmer on low for 5 minutes. Serve over cooked rice and additional cooked vegetables (a bag of frozen stir fry veggies would be good). Garnish with a few cut-up green onions. Magical Lemon Dessert Blend 2 cups of flour with 1 cup of soft butter. Mix until a ball forms. Press out evenly into the bottom of a 9x13-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes and then cool. Mix two 8-ounce packages of softened cream cheese with 1 cup of sugar. Spread this mixture over the cooled crust, then refrigerate. Mix 2 small packages of instant lemon pudding with three and one-half cups of milk—mix for 5 minutes. Spread this over the cooled cream cheese mixture. Refrigerate for 2–3 hours. Before serving, spread a container of frozen whipped topping (thawed) or 2 cups of whipped whipping cream over the top. Chill leftovers. Eclipse Cookies—Celebrate the solar eclipse on August 21! Cream three-fourths cup of sugar with 1 cup of butter and 1 teaspoon of vanilla for 3–4 minutes (until fluffy). Add 1 extralarge egg and mix for 1 additional minute. Mix in 2 cups of flour, one-half teaspoon of baking soda, one-half teaspoon of cream of tartar, and one-half teaspoon of salt. Refrigerate for an hour. Roll the dough into small balls and press them flat on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes, then cool. Recalibrate Your Body Chemistry Detox at Garrison Wellness By Frances Diana Hayden

More than a decade ago, Lisa Garrison had a lunch with a friend that would change her life. She had noticed that her friend, a registered nurse, had been gradually losing weight over the past year. On this particular day, as her friend gestured during their conversation, her ring flew off her hand. Lisa, who had been trying to lose weight herself, asked her what she was doing. “She replied that she was doing detox,” Lisa recalls. Lisa confides that her initial reaction was that “I was a horrible friend not to have seen any signs of drug or alcohol abuse in her.” That’s not what her friend meant, though—she had been taking part in a weight management detox program. Lisa embraced the very same system, losing 42 pounds and 33 inches. That was more than 13 years ago, and Lisa has maintained her healthy weight. Lisa decided to start her own business, Garrison Wellness, and offer the same detox product, FirstFitness Nutrition. The product’s remarkable track record reveals that, in 28 years, it has had less than 0.5 percent product return, nationwide. Nevertheless, Lisa offers a 100 percent money-back guarantee. She is now a wellness and weight loss coach for individuals, businesses, corporate offices, fire and police stations, and the military. Her focus is weight-management nutrition education and overall wellness. Lisa creates educational programs in schools and advocates for family wellness and nutrition education through outreach programs. She was invited to serve on the Wellness Committee for School District 49, here in Colorado Springs. While she does not provide specific meal planning, she shares recipes for quick, easy meals and snacks as alternatives to drive-thru meals. Lisa often fields calls from clients who need weight loss and health improvement before a required fitness test and who want to enhance their endurance. She offers free wellness consultations, staffs health fairs, and even serves many out-of-state clients. “Ideally,” she says, “I want to be a resource for people who are looking for weight management and general health improvement. I have clients with challenging medical situations swirling around such issues as lack of energy, sleep disorders, range of motion, sluggish systems, acid reflux, headaches, seasonal allergies, or depression and anxiety.” Another of her goals is to help people reduce their medications or to avoid them in the first place. “I recalibrate my clients’ body chemistry by getting them back in peak form, treating food as fuel, not as a source of comfort, friendship, or reward,”

12

she emphasizes. With the focus on weight loss and weight management, women generally Lisa Garrison, Certified lose 10–12 pounds per month. The average weight Wellness Coach and loss is even more for men, who make up 25 percent Weight Loss Coach of her clientele. Her clients range in age from youth to nearly 100 years old. When clients contact Lisa, she begins by asking them a series of questions to take a pulse on their current lifestyle and goals. “I want to know if they travel, skip meals, are sedentary, have eating disorders, or have had a cardiac event. I want to know who does the grocery shopping and how often they eat at drive-thru restaurants,” she reveals. Some of her clients contact her after a family member’s diagnosis or sudden death. They often become more introspective and decide, “I do not want to live like this anymore.” Once she has a profound sense of her clients’ individual concerns, Lisa empowers them with information and laces it with humor to help them stay motivated. “Diet is a four-letter word with the word ‘die’ in it,” says Lisa. “Diets are like light switches that go on and off, which is why they don’t work. Detox, however, resets the body chemistry for long term correction.” Once the client assessment is complete, Lisa creates an individualized protocol to help each client achieve her personal goals. Lisa graduated from San Diego State University with degrees in sociology and English. She has a background in counseling and mental health, having run a residential treatment center. She reveals that she herself has faced extreme conflict, but she chose to become a healthier person, replacing brain fog with mental clarity. “Nothing can shock me,” she stresses. “There is no judgment. I want to be a beacon of hope for my clients, for people who have given up and do not feel they are deserving. Women often do not believe they deserve tender loving care; I want to help them recognize they are well worth it.” Lisa invites you to a free consultation to find out how she can help you meet your weight loss and wellness goals. A Woman’s Work

Family Entertainment It’s Reunion Season!

By Sharon Knierim

Here we are again—in August. If you haven’t already attended (or avoided) an annual family reunion this year, don’t worry. You’ll probably be offered more chances as August finishes up and September rolls around. For many of us, family reunions can be painful reminders of embarrassing childhood memories or the loss of loved ones. But if you think through what a family reunion really means, you’ll see that there’s no need to avoid your annual opportunity to see these people. A family reunion, just like any other gathering of people with shared interests or shared pasts, is a celebration of the values most of us hold dear. What goes on at these events? Typically, everyone gets the opportunity to retell the same stories and jokes from years past. The same people form the same groups and reminisce about the good old days. What makes them the good old days? They are made good because we know the endings to the stories. Don’t forget—reunions can be a gathering of any group with a shared past, whether you’re technically related or not. Some friends gather for their annual Army or Navy reunion and bring the whole family. Don’t discount high school reunions! You’ve probably attended at least one of these events made up of people who were not yet fully formed when they knew each other. It can be fun to discover who they turned into and how

they have lived their lives. Everyone should attend at least one of these reunions to justify their own sanity. They are fun and only last a few hours. When it’s over, everyone has something new to think about. At family reunions, you are entertained by characters that Hollywood could never dream up. There is old Uncle Joe, with his insatiable love of babies. Each year, he gathers the newly born on his lap and jostles them for the annual Uncle Joe/New Baby photo. By the time the camera clicks, most of the babies are howling with fear and distrust. Eventually, they are handed back to their anxious mothers for calming, but for at least half an hour, we are all treated to terror-filled screaming and a full flow of tears. Who loves it? Uncle Joe loves it. This activity makes his year! Now, that’s entertainment! Don’t forget Cousin Maude. I hope she doesn’t know that

her code name is Cousin Maudlin. Cousin Maude is a woman who never settled down into marriage. She claims to have never found a man interesting enough to hold her attention. Instead, she spends much of her free time distributing pamphlets about health and safety. Cleanliness is high on her list, and she loves to share her knowledge about fleas, ticks, and handwashing. (Don’t let her see you with your fingers near your nose—she has a pamphlet for that.) We love her because only someone in the family could talk to us like that, and we know she has our best interests at heart. We think of her as an infomercial that comes with its own sanitary hand wipes. Best known for his hands-on approach is Lester. I do not know whether he is a third cousin or some distant uncle, but he is best approached from across the table. He certainly is active and full of schemes. Most difficult to avoid is Hubie. Hubie sells insurance and annuities and is always on the prowl for new clients. He comes prepared with lots of information about life protection and personal financial security. When he arrives at family shindigs with a briefcase under his right arm and a bowl of coleslaw in his left hand, we know we’re in for an insurance lesson. Do we love it? Yes, we do, because he’s family, and he cares about us. No family reunion would be complete without the boy cousins getting into food fights, followed by their water pistol battles, which often soak some of the elders, much to their displeasure. But family is family, so we accept it. If you are fortunate enough to attend an annual reunion that has been archived year after year, you are in luck. One of the events we like to attend dedicates a full picnic table to scrapbooks from years past. Looking through those pages is an opportunity to see those people now gone gazing back at us. We embrace them for their contributions to the family and the wonderful memories they gave us. In the albums of memories, we can see birth announcements, wedding invitations, obituaries, and even newspaper stories about some of us through the years. It’s priceless. If you’re deciding whether or not to attend a family reunion this year, just remember: You, too, are part of the entertainment. Pack up that fried chicken and cherry pie and go have a good time. The cost of admission is only a smile. WE

Financial Advisors Are You Prepared for the Golden Years? By Connie Keck

For those of us who don’t work in the financial industry, having a “financial advisor” sounds like a great idea—and it is. But what, exactly, is a financial advisor? When should you get one? If you already have one, does she have the right expertise and experience to help you meet your financial goals? A financial advisor can provide many services to clients, including offering financial advice, preparing tax returns, managing investments, and drafting estate plans. The term “financial advisor” has no precise definition within the industry and does not necessarily indicate a particular licensure. This can make finding the right kind of financial professional for you a little tricky. According to Forbes, there are four basic types of financial advisors, though a single person may qualify as more than one type. Registered representatives, also called brokers or investment representatives, are paid on commission to sell investment and insurance products. Their primary sales licenses are Series 6 or Series 7. A broker’s job is to sell investments, not to draft your family’s comprehensive financial plan. Financial planners have no particular licensing requirements. Essentially, anyone can claim to be a financial planner, and just because someone isn’t licensed to sell investments doesn’t mean she can’t offer good financial advice. That said, there are certain professional designations to look for that suggest a person is educated in the field and qualified to provide financial advice. Your vetting process should limit your selection to those who have earned one of these designations: CFP (certified financial planner), CPA/ PFS (certified public accountant/personal financial specialist), or ChFC (chartered financial consultant). Many people who call themselves financial advisors are, more specifically, registered investment advisors (RIAs). This distinction is important because these professionals are financial fiduciaries, which means they are required to act in their clients’ best financial interests. They are held to the highest ethical standards in the financial services industry. Some CPAs secure the RIA certification to demonstrate to their clients that they can help with comprehensive financial planning. Money managers are in charge of an investment portfolio, not a comprehensive financial plan. They may make decisions for investors without the investors’ advance approval. In some families, investment decisions are made exclusively by men. It’s important, however, for both partners to take part in the financial planning and investment decisions for the family. Some things to consider: Who makes the decisions when it comes to planning for continuing education for your children or any member of your family? Does your family have enough life insurance benefits to sustain you should there be a loss of one of the income producers in the

16

family? Do you have a long term care policy? Do you have an investment or pension plan through your employer? If you don’t work outside the home, do you contribute to an IRA on a regular basis? Do you have a basic savings plan? As you work through the myriad of financial concerns and issues you may have, it is important to seek out information and a financial advisor who can help you maneuver through the maze of financial planning and help you set both long-term and shortterm goals. Finding a financial advisor who is a good fit for you and your financial goals takes some research. To get started, ask coworkers, family members, or friends if they can recommend someone. You can also find advisors through professional organizations online. For example, if you seek a CFP, you can go to www. cfp.net and click on Find a CFP Professional to search by geographic area. Many financial advisors will offer a short informational session at no charge, to see if they could meet your needs. When you speak with a potential advisor, be sure to ask the following questions: • How do you charge for your services (commission, fees, or both)? • How much do you charge for your services? • What licenses, credentials, or other certifications do you have? • What services do you provide? • Do you specialize in a particular type of client? • What is your investment approach? • How much contact do you have with your clients? • Will I be working only with you or with a larger team? • What makes your client experience unique? After the interview, recall whether the advisor seemed interested in you. Did she ask questions about you and your financial goals? You want an advisor who is interested in your individual circumstances, not someone with a one-size-fits-all-clients approach. Be sure to confirm the credentials of any potential advisor before working with her. To learn more about a financial professional, you can ask if her business is overseen by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (www.finra.org) or the Securities and Exchange Commission (www.sec.gov). The website

www.womensedition.com

for each of these regulatory agencies has a search function into which you can type the advisor or firm’s name for more information. To see if a CFP is truly a CFP, you can search for her with the CFP Board at www.cfp.net. It is difficult to plan for the future if you don’t have an understanding of where you are today. What does your current financial picture look like? Do you have life insurance, a long term care policy, health insurance, a savings plan, and a retirement account? Once you can see where you are, you can take a look at where you want to go. Review your long-term and short-term financial goals so you can discuss them with your financial advisor. What is your vision for your financial future? How can you get there? Do your current investments, savings plans, and other finances put you on the road to reach your goals? How can you stay on track? If you feel you are not on the right path to reach your financial goals, take a look at your plan and review with your advisor how it might be changed to reflect the vision, goals, and objectives you want to have in place when you retire. At what point in time should you work with a financial advisor? It’s never too early to seek financial advice. Many workplaces have retirement plans and pension plans. They probably work with an investment firm that will manage the funds for their employees. When you sign up for a 401(k) or other investment vehicle, an investment advisor will talk with you to set up your account. This advisor will ask you about your risk tolerance regarding investments and will help you select investments that reflect your tolerance of risk. After a retirement account is set up, don’t just forget about it! You will need to

revisit your plan periodically. How often to reassess your goals is an excellent issue to discuss with your financial advisor. There are some additional issues to consider when you are putting a plan together for your financial future, even though they are not strictly financial questions. If you don’t already have an estate plan, including a will, you should create one. You may think that an estate plan is just for people with sizeable assets, but everyone should have one, regardless of income. This document will lay out how your assets are to be disbursed upon your death. This is especially important if you have minor children—if you don’t name a legal guardian for them and indicate how and when they should access your assets, the courts will make all these decisions for you. These issues may seem unpleasant, but they are important, as they will affect your financial investments and planning strategy. Keep in mind that you, your family, and the financial plan you make will change over time. The needs you have today may be very different from the needs you will have a year from now, or five years, or 20 years. The important thing is that you become an active participant in planning your financial future. At times, you will have to make adjustments in your plan to continue to move forward with realizing your financial goals. This does not mean that you didn’t plan properly in the first place—on the contrary, it means that you’re paying proper attention to your financial journey. Get started! No matter what your finances look like today, you could benefit from the guidance of a financial advisor. Curating an Artful Home The Secret is in the Mix

By Robyn V. Powell

When the great George Bernard Shaw remarked, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself,” he probably wasn’t speaking in terms of home design…but the principle still applies. Your home tells your story, and a home, like a story, is at its best when it grabs us and takes us somewhere interesting. When thoughtfully curated and beautifully displayed, artwork is not just about filling frames but about expressing character and aesthetics. Styling a space with art allows your personality to shine through your home. Begin by asking yourself what art you love and what you like to have around you every day. Think about the pieces you currently have. Think about what new pieces you could add to your space to complement or contrast with existing pieces as well as the other items in your home. Once you have this information, you have a checklist for what you’re looking for when searching for art. Consider consulting an interior designer to help you select just the right artwork to accent your home. Visit galleries and attend events featuring local and emerging artists. Experts say the best advice for choosing pieces wisely is to follow your instincts. It only feels right if you can see something of yourself in it, if it resonates with you in a personal way. Buy pieces you love and that are meaningful to you, not

just items to fill a void on a wall. Art is like wine. It doesn’t really matter how much it cost, so long as you like it. Whether your style is traditional, contemporary, or an eclectic mix, there are many factors to consider when displaying art. From lighting to placement, from sizing to custom framing, the results can make or break a room. An interior designer with an artistic eye can show you how best to display the artwork you’ve collected. Select frames that honor the work without stealing the show, such as simple black or white frames. A consistent look avoids distraction from the art itself. Neutral mats let the art shine by not competing with it. Light-sensitive artwork such as watercolors or pencil drawings fade faster than you think, so invest in UV glass made to protect such items. Proper lighting can also improve or diminish the presentation of artwork. Large-scale paintings require wider ›››

floodlights, while smaller paintings and sculptures need only a spotlight. Lighting retailers can offer informed guidance on fixtures that highlight your art while remaining unobtrusive, focusing all the attention on the art. Sculptures, ceramics, and pottery can be displayed on tables, on shelving with books, or on a pedestal that blends with the surroundings and doesn’t compete with the piece. It’s also important to maintain a proper sense of scale. A work of art has to look like it belongs where it hangs. If it’s too small for the space, the art will be diminished in stature; if it is too large, the observer’s eye will not focus properly on it. If you have a large blank space, sometimes it’s better to go with a collection of smaller works rather than one large piece. Create a beautiful representation of your personality with a gallery wall. A collage of different styles, price points, and time periods has a “collected over time” look and tells a story—your story. Finding a common thread, whether it be a consistent color within each piece or similar style of frames, will create a sense of cohesion among otherwise differing pieces. This may sound mundane, but the number one mistake people make is hanging the artwork too high. The rule of thumb is to hang the artwork so the center is 57 inches from the floor (eye level for a person of average height). Pay homage to your family history by integrating heirloom artifacts into your collection. Framing stores and local galleries that specialize in framing use archival materials and spacers to preserve and protect family photos, cherished family letters, or vintage lace. They often make custom boxes that protect the items inside from heat and UV exposure. Create a custom display box to safely showcase wedding flowers, family recipes, and jewelry. Display boxes are designed to last a lifetime, allowing you to enjoy your heirlooms for years and then pass them along to the next generation. When it comes to artwork, buy what you like, and buy to keep. Let your art collection chronicle your life story. Carefully selected and properly displayed art gives your home a sophisticated feel. Most importantly, it will be something you truly enjoy every time you walk into the room. Isn’t that, after all, the purpose of art? Catagonia Cat Hotel Your Cat’s Home Away From Home By Libby Kinder

Cat owners often find themselves at a disadvantage when it comes to boarding options in the Colorado Springs community. Shannan Longley, owner of Catagonia Cat Hotel, has made it her mission to close this gap in quality pet care by focusing solely on the feline population. “I advocate for cats by offering high-quality nutrition, aiding rescue organizations, and providing outstanding boarding opportunities,” Shannan says. “My goal is to redefine the industry standard for feline boarding. You should be able to go out of town and feel good about the care your cat is receiving.” You feel good about Catagonia the moment you enter. The environment is surprisingly quiet—nothing like the din of a traditional kennel—with soft music playing, muted lighting, and pleasantly scented air. It is peaceful and clean. Inspiration for starting her business originated with Shannan’s ownership of two cats, a pair of Japanese bobtail siblings. When she was stationed in Japan, Shannan visited a rescue center with the intention of adopting one cat. She came away with a bonded pair of siblings—one male, one female. She soon encountered the challenge of seeking appropriate care for her pets when she needed to board them. She was reluctant to ask friends for help because of the Houdini-like escape skills her cats possessed, but the facilities she found only offered small cages. Shannan maintains an interest in training cats and in educating cat owners. “The stereotype is that cats are not trainable, but this is not true,” she states. Behavioral challenges ebb and flow depending upon a cat’s environment and the owner’s responsiveness. Shannan served full time in the Air Force for eight years and continues her military service as a Major in the reserves. She and her father designed the interior layout of Catagonia and built all the pieces in her garage. After assembling the multiple rooms, complete with play spaces, Shannan opened for business in November of last year. She ensures that each feline guest has a happy, healthy, and hygienic experience. Additional staff members include five part-time employees, volunteers, and interns. “The amount of space each cat has is one of the things that differentiates us from what is typically available,” Shannan points out. Three different size rooms are available: 4x4 feet, 4x8 feet, and 8x8 feet, all with eight-foot ceilings. Individual rooms offer bridges, cat walks, hiding boxes, and more, with a focus on vertical space. Shannan is a proponent of the cat owners’ manual “Catification,” written by Jackson Galaxy and Kate Benjamin. It shows cat owners how to design functional and stylish living environments for cats. At

24

Catagonia, cats can explore their surroundings outside their rooms during free play time. Of course, with a double set of monitored doors in both the front and back of the facility, there is no opportunity for escape! Rooms are cleaned daily, cleaned and sanitized between guests, and sanitized weekly for long-term guests. Catagonia offers 50 rooms, and each room has the capacity to house two or more cats. (Only cats from the same household are boarded in the same room.) The Pet Animal Care Facilities Act (PACFA) is the state regulatory agency that ensures all state requirements are met, though Shannan goes above and beyond these requirements. Besides a facility inspection prior to opening, pet boarding facilities must pass random inspections and apply for yearly re-licensure. In order to manage stress for guests that are away from the familiarity of home, Catagonia staff members focus on behavior history, including how a cat reacts to strangers, its medical history, and an understanding of cause and effect behaviors. Customer Floribelle Janulis is pleased with her cat’s stay at Catagonia. “It was really a nice facility; very clean. I would definitely use her again,” she reports. She is very impressed by the effective air filtration system and says her cats were calm and relaxed during their stay. Floribelle uses Catagonia’s convenient pickup service. In addition to boarding, Catagonia offers a retail department, grooming services, and behavioral consultations. Retail products include toys, handmade beds, creative litter solutions, all-natural foods, calming products, and medical and behavioral remedies. Shannan is constantly on the lookout for innovative products. Two free classes are available. Kitten Kindergarten class focuses on the development of skills to foster companionship between pet and owner. The Eat, Play, Love class increases enrichment opportunities, proper nutrition, and enhanced understanding of behavior and instincts. Shannan suggests that class participants make a donation to Happy Cats Haven; Shannan also fosters felines from Happy Cats. Catagonia Cat Hotel is located at 4703 Centennial Boulevard, in Colorado Springs. Their phone number is 719-602-6081. Good Looks

You Are Spec-tacular! Express Yourself With Amazing Frames By Monica L. Davis

Having the perfect eyewear allows you to define your personality, customize your individual style, and shape how others perceive you. Truth be told, eyewear tends to convey intelligence, honesty, and trustworthiness. As long as you’ve got the right specs, you can convey all that and anything else you want! This season, you’re sure to find a trending frame silhouette to love, no matter what your style. To help instill a conservative image, professionals typically keep to traditional frame shapes such as ovals, rectangles, and almonds. Also professional is the “brow-line” style, which has a frame on the top of the lens but not on the bottom. These semirimless frames are simple and professional, and they look great on both women and men! Many people with creative and artistic style still prefer the “hipster” look for eyewear. These square-shaped frames are often oversized and have wider black rims. Retro frames are also trending, such as the 1960s “mod” look and cat’s eye frames. Cat’s eye frames are gaining popularity particularly in the academic and business environments. Aviator frames are also back in fashion this season. When selecting the color of your frames, you need to take into consideration characteristics such as your eye color, skin tone, and hair color. One of the favored frame hues this season is the classic tortoise shell. Though no longer made from actual tortoise shells, the pattern of these frames is a classic for a reason—whether you are

a blonde, a brunette, or a redhead, tortoise shell flatters everyone! The classic pattern also works well for professional attire. Silver, brown, or black frames tend to go with everything, including business apparel, and are suitable for men and women. If you are looking for something a little bolder, you could try red, pink, or purple frames! If you have decided to embrace your silvering hair (which is trending all on its own this season), you’ll find that many fun colors pair well with your silvery tresses. For a noticeably savvy look, consider cherry reds and sea blues. Black frames always look classic and polished and will complement your lustrous hair (I’m picturing Diane Keaton and Jamie Lee Curtis here). It’s also important to consider the material that makes up the frame. Choose a frame material with the qualities that are pertinent to your lifestyle. Plastic frames are often constructed from zylonite, a cost-effective, lightweight material often known as “zyl.” Other

plastic frame materials include polyamide, polycarbonate, carbon, and nylon (which is a nearly indestructible material great for an active lifestyle or sports). As an added bonus, many of these materials are considered hypoallergenic. Frames are fabricated from various metal materials, as well. The most common is Monel, a mixture of nickel and copper. Titanium is a popular choice for metal frames because of its lightweight durability and sleek, modern look. If you are fond of the titanium look but not its high price, you might consider beryllium frames. This steel-gray metal resists corrosion and does not tarnish. For the real eyewear connoisseur, custom frames are available in distinctive materials like silver, gold, wood, or even bone. Diamonds, semi-precious stones, and Swarovski crystals can be used to accent frames for the ultimate luxurious touch. In the area of lens technology, the focus remains on protecting eyes from the harmful effects of light (both indoors and out). Long-term exposure to sunlight or the blue light from digital screens is damaging to your eyes. Photochromic lenses, commonly known by the brand name Transitions, darken on exposure to specific types of light of sufficient intensity, most commonly UV. Transitions lenses are making great strides to protect our eyes from these harmful lights. Weekend warriors with sports vision needs might choose polarized lenses, which help reduce light reflecting off of water or snow, or polycarbonate lenses, which are shatter-resistant. Popular lenses for more complicated prescriptions include no-line or invisible bifocals and progressive lenses. These types of lenses feature smooth, less-noticeable transitions between the different focal lengths. Tinted lenses often called “computer glasses stop some of the blue light from screens from getting to your eyes. These are available with or without prescription vision correction. Obtain your eyewear, along with a proper eye exam, from an optician or a professional optical company. Once your eyewear has been perfectly crafted for you, you will still need to ensure an accurate fit. Ill-fitting glasses can be uncomfortable, affect your vision, and look unprofessional. The optician will adjust your glasses to properly fit your face and ensure that the lenses line up with your eyes correctly. Look and see your best with a new pair of glasses! Associates in Women’s Care An Individualized Approach to Hormone Balance

By Cheryl Lassota

“Hormone balance is a wonderful thing!” exclaims Sandy Winn, Nurse Practitioner at Associates in Women’s Care, P.C. “Hormones regulate energy, mood, reproduction, metabolism, and almost every bodily function. Our bodies function best when we have adequate hormones, at any age.” “Got menopause?” Sandy asks. “Often, women past 50 are told that they’re going to be heavier, and less happy, and that it can’t get any better, so they must live with it. They are sometimes scoffed at if they mention bioidentical hormone therapy. I don’t think it is inevitable that women must gain weight, decade by decade. Sometimes it involves other factors, such as the thyroid, but most of the time, it is sex hormones, and we just need to offer some options. We can measure estradiol, which is potent estrogen, and test levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).” Sandy prescribes and administers pellets, compounds, and other biologically equivalent forms of

replacement hormones that have the same chemical structure as the hormones created in the body. Sandy notes, “There are many anti-aging, health and wellness clinics popping up, and it’s really all about hormone therapy.” “During menopause, the feedback loop in our bodies doesn’t work anymore,” Sandy explains. “Without hormonal balance, estradiol can reach rock-bottom levels, while the FSH goes sky high.” FSH levels should not be elevated long-term, Sandy notes, but they are sometimes elevated up to 12 years after menopause. “It is as if the brain is asking, ‘Where’s the estrogen?!’

That is not a normal state of affairs,” she says emphatically. “I see patients who have researched the options and are still struggling with menopausal symptoms. They seek us out for bioidentical hormone options.” Sandy also prescribes testosterone for women. “It’s not just a man’s hormone,” she says. In women, testosterone is produced primarily by the ovaries, but also the adrenal glands. By age 40, a woman typically circulates half of what she did in her 20s. Testosterone deficiency may result in fatigue, low libido, increased depression, eye/skin issues, joint pain, decreased muscle mass, and a diminished sense of well-being. Testosterone for women has been available since 1938 in pellet form, but it is not mass manufactured by pharmaceutical companies for women. Locally, compounding pharmacists make it in gels, creams, dissolving tablets, or pellets that can be inserted under the skin. “Testosterone helps counter estrogen that is feeding endometriosis. It can restore energy, sex drive, appropriate muscle mass, and strength,” Sandy says. “Testosterone pellets can completely reverse precipitous bone loss.” Sandy reminds us that all women need bone density testing after age 50. Jenny, age 35, was diagnosed with endometriosis six years ago. Along with the pain of endometriosis, she was having trouble regulating her hormones and responded poorly to traditional birth control pills. “Sandy started me on hormone pellets in 2013, and they have made such a difference for me!” Jenny shares. “My cycles have become regular and very moderate, and my endometriosis symptoms have lessened significantly. The insertion process is quick and easy, and I have had no unwanted side effects. This method of treatment has made a world of difference for me!”

“Over the last 20 years of providing health care to women, I have repeatedly seen the benefits of testosterone therapy,” Sandy continues. “I’ve heard horror stories of broken engagements, lost jobs, of having one’s whole world fall apart due to sleeplessness, mood swings, and fatigue. That is a real shame. I let women choose to start hormone therapy and continue. My preference is the most natural route; it means restoring hormones if they become low. Hormone therapy may not be a panacea, but we can measure hormone levels, provide prescription therapies, and make changes as needed so women can get on with their lives.” Another patient, Meredy, concurs. “I opted for pellet therapy as my best option for getting my life back on track after menopause. People assume hormone replacement is all about libido. For me, that certainly was retored with the pellets, but ‘improved quality of life’ seems a much more apt description. The balance of my moods, coping skills, focus, energy—and yes, my libido—are all greatly enhanced. I am very grateful.” Sandy teams with the medical doctors at Associates in Women’s Care: Andrea M. Income Outcome

Appreciate the Now Slow Down, Enjoy Life Rush, rush, rush. Get to work early; stay late. Run through the fast-food joint to pick up dinner for the family. Load the dishwasher and clean the kitchen while you’re talking on the phone to your sister, whom you haven’t had a chance to call in weeks. “Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson Just like any other creation in our lives, the ability to create more time begins with a decision. Does that mean we need to lessen our wantings? No. It simply means that we have to make a new decision. How are we going to live our lives?

By Janet Van deWalle

By asking ourselves the “what feels better?” question, many of us will discover that we have been doing things simply because we have always done them that way. “We are often so caught up in our destination that we forget to appreciate the journey, especially the goodness of the people we meet along the way. Appreciation is a wonderful feeling, don’t overlook it.” —Unknown This is the next step—appreciating the journey. There are moments when we come into contact with friends, family, coworkers. By making a conscious decision to totally put our focus on them and appreciate them, time will, in essence, seem to slow down.

“Try as much as possible to be wholly alive, with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell, and when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough.” —William Saroyan

“Look for things that you appreciate where you are. It will put you in a place of perfect allowing, even when you are not yet manifesting all that you want.” —Abraham/Hicks

The first step can be as simple as taking a look at how we are spending our time. Let’s remember, the purpose of life is to seek our joy. What are we doing that is not bringing us joy? We have to ask ourselves: Does it feel better to take on that new project at the office, or does it feel better to delegate it? Does it feel better to clean my own house, or does it feel better to finally hire that cleaning service?

The last step? Take your list of “things to do today” and identify the items that you know you will get accomplished today. The other things on your list? Turn them over to the Universe to handle! If we simply recognize that creating our own reality doesn’t mean that we have to do it all by ourselves, that the Universe is there to deliver to us what it is that we want, we can then finally begin to live in the now. Kids Comments

www.womensedition.com

Is it Autism, Illness, or Natural Delay? Don’t Be Afraid to Have Your Child Checked Several times in the last few weeks, the subject of autism has come up. After a friend’s brother died, I asked about the delegation of donations to autism research. Deb said her brother had always had problems in school, with social relationships, and even keeping a job. As an adult, he was finally diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum and was delighted to finally find out what had caused his problems growing up. A week later, the obituary of another friend also asked that donations be made to the study of autism…his son had been diagnosed. I recently completed an interview for this magazine during which we discussed the autism spectrum, among other things. My friend Theresa and I were catching up on our families when she started telling me about the problems some of her nieces and nephews have had. She had recently read about autism and thought that might partially explain the kids’ difficulties. Theresa commented that she doesn’t remember classmates or any of her brothers and sisters being diagnosed with all these troubles and problems. We talked about the more common symptoms of autism, such as delayed speech development, repetitive language or mannerisms, few friends, avoidance or lack of spontaneity or makebelieve, and fixation on objects or tasks. She said her son didn’t talk for a long time and preferred being alone to playing with friends. She wondered if he should have been tested for autism or some related disorder. My grandson Michael was overly focused (which, I think, is only slightly preferable to having an attention deficit) in kindergarten

By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS

and preferred working by himself to group activities. He was eventually diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, which is a disability on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum. It’s difficult for parents…no, for all of us…to know whether unusual behaviors indicate a disability or are part of growing up. As I mentioned, Deb’s brother was happy to finally have a name for his difficulties. Today, Michael pretty much “goes with the flow” until he gets frustrated with what he considers ineptitude. This is part of his difficulty in relating to other people (we continue working on those social skills). Theresa’s son is functioning well as an adult, but she still worries. If you are concerned about your child’s development, talk to your child’s physician. Be proactive. Educate yourself. Go online and research autism and its related disabilities. Look up learning disabilities. Talk to professionals. (I do offer this caveat: Beware of false diagnoses…even doctors are wrong sometimes.) When it comes to our kids, they’re never too young or too old to get help. Remember, kids are people, too. We all have times when our interest in what is going on lags, whether we’re in a meeting, watching a performance, having a conversation, or writing an artic—ooh, a bird just flew by the window! Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Barrick Family Practice

Serving Colorado Springs Families for 30 Years

By Brenda Gracely

According to the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA), the cornerstone of family medicine is to provide personal, comprehensive, and continuing care for the individual in the context of the family and the community—that’s what gives these doctors the title of “family physician.” One of our own local family physicians, Steve Barrick, DO, is board-certified in family medicine and has been serving Colorado Springs in private practice since 1987. Dr. Barrick grew up in Iowa and received his medical school training at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri. Following his internship at Metropolitan General Hospital in Pinellas County, Florida, he completed his residency training in family medicine at Des Moines General Hospital. Dr. Barrick is affiliated with University of Colorado Health–Memorial Hospital Central and Penrose–St. Francis Health Services. He is honored to work with two very talented and experienced physician assistants: Jessica Brandon, PA-C, and Jeff Waters, PA-C. Jessica grew up in Philadelphia and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in biology at Swarthmore College. She enjoyed working in a nonprofit Spanishspeaking clinic in North Philadelphia for two years prior to completing a Master of Science in physician assistant studies at Duke University. Jessica is trained in all aspects of family medicine. She loves the variety and challenge of family practice and considers it an honor to get to know patients and their families. She especially enjoys partnering with women to create better physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health in every stage of their lives. Jessica loves spending time with her husband and three young children. They enjoy outdoor activities and exploring Colorado. Jeff has more than 22 years of experience practicing as a physician assistant. He joined Barrick Family Practice in 2015. Jeff grew up in a farming community in southwestern Michigan but always dreamed of moving to Colorado. After graduating from high school, he spent three years in the Army as a medic stationed at Ft. Lee, Virginia, and Camp Greaves, Korea, where he earned the coveted Expert Field Medical Badge. Jeff was finally able to move to Colorado in the 1990s, after completing his physician assistant training. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Michigan University and a Master of Science in physician assistant studies from the University of Nebraska. Jeff enjoys all the outdoor experiences Colorado has to offer, including biking, skiing and snowboarding, and camping and hiking. He spends countless hours outdoors with his family, as they are all involved in a variety of sports. Family physicians deliver a range of acute, chronic, and preventive medical care services. In addition to diagnosing and treating illness, they also provide preventive care, including routine checkups, health

34

risk assessments, immunization and screening tests, and personalized counseling on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Family physicians also manage chronic illness, often coordinating care provided by other specialists. These physicians play a very important role in the healthcare system. In the U.S., for example, nearly one in four of all office visits are made to family physicians. That is 208 million office visits each year—nearly 83 million more than the next largest medical specialty. Family physicians, more than physicians of any other medical specialty, provide care for America’s underserved and rural populations. Barrick Family Practice offers customary general services in addition to some very unique procedures. For example, Dr. Barrick treats difficult cumulus skeletal disorders using platelet-rich plasma. This process involves drawing small amounts of blood from the patient’s arm and then processing the blood to remove white and red blood cells. This leaves behind the platelet cells, which contain powerful growth factors that can restore ligaments and tendons and even help arthritic joints. Dr. Barrick and his staff also provide screening for patients’ vascular health. This involves the use of carotid ultrasonography to measure the health of the blood vessel walls. The carotid ultrasound has become a valuable tool for detecting premature hardening of the arteries, allowing the practitioner to tailor a treatment plan to decrease plaque buildup in the arteries and prevent premature heart attacks and stroke. Another unique service that is offered at the practice is known as Calmare Scrambler Therapy. This procedure involves the use of a medical device that treats difficult nerve pain. Diabetic neuropathy and complex regional pain syndrome can be treated successfully using this device. The therapy is being used at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, for treatment of post-chemotherapy neuropathy. The treatments can help patients reduce or discontinue most of their pain medication and can restore a lifestyle without intense nerve pain. Barrick Family Practice is located at 104 Pro Rodeo Drive, Suite 100, in Colorado Springs. For more information on the services they provide, call 719-5220707 or visit www.BarrickFamilyPractice.com. Food Allergies Versus Food Intolerance What’s the Difference, and Why Does It Matter?

By Kylie Gumpert

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 5 percent of children and 4 percent of adults in the United States have food allergies. But what are food allergies, anyway? How are they different from food intolerance? Here’s one example: If a person with a lactose intolerance eats dairy products, she may experience significant gastrointestinal symptoms, like cramping, gas, and diarrhea. Although these symptoms can be highly uncomfortable and inconvenient, they are time-limited and hardly life-threatening. She might even be able to take pills that help her body digest dairy without any issues. A person with a lactose allergy, however, could have allergic reactions to dairy—everything from an itchy rash or hives to swelling and complete closure of her airway. The discrepancy in these reactions comes down to the different systems in the body that are responding to triggers. With a food allergy, the body’s immune system thinks that proteins in certain foods are attacking the body, so the immune system fights back. This results in harmful symptoms that may be mild, such as an itchy mouth or hives, or serious, like swelling of the face and throat that makes it difficult or impossible to breathe. Some people with severe food allergies will experience anaphylaxis when they come into contact with the food (in some cases, they don’t even have to ingest it). This is the most

serious allergic reaction; it impacts the entire body, affecting heart rate, causing blood pressure to drop, and significantly impairing breathing. People with food allergies this severe may be instructed by a physician to carry a shot of epinephrine that can be administered in case of a reaction. Food intolerance, on the other hand, is a matter of the digestive system. It means that your body can’t break down a certain food properly. It causes varying levels of gastrointestinal discomfort, but these reactions are not caused by the immune system. A person with a food intolerance can sometimes eat small amounts of the offending food without experiencing symptoms. With celiac disease, which is sometimes referred to as a gluten allergy, the immune system is involved to some extent, but anaphylaxis will not occur. Most of the symptoms of celiac disease are results of the digestive system. Because of this, it is technically a food intolerance, although wheat allergy does exist. According to the CDC, only eight foods cause about 90 percent of food allergy reactions: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, and crustacean shellfish. Reactions may vary significantly—

and not just from one person to another but also from one instance of eating a particular food to another. If you suspect that you have a food allergy or food intolerance, don’t try to diagnose it yourself. Symptoms of food allergies, food intolerances, or even food poisoning can be difficult to decipher, so it’s important to rely on a physician’s expert opinion and laboratory testing. Begin by visiting your primary care provider or an allergy specialist. Skin-prick tests, blood tests, or oral food challenges are traditional ways to diagnose a food allergy. For a skinprick test, an allergist will place a small amount of liquid containing different allergens on your back or arm and then prick your skin in that location. If a bump or rash appears, it’s likely you are allergic to that particular allergen. Blood tests look for elevated levels of food-specific antibodies. An oral food challenge involves eating small but increasing amounts of a trigger food until an allergic reaction is observed. Currently, food allergies are generally diagnosed after symptoms occur—that is, you don’t go to the doctor to get tested until after you’ve had some trouble. Newer predictive tests are still experimental, but one out of Stanford may be able to predict food allergies in newborns as well as older people. Accurate prediction of food allergies may well protect or save lives. Another promising test has identified disabled genes in the white blood cells of people with food allergies. After testing confirms a food allergy, the ultimate solution is for that person to avoid those foods altogether. This is, of course, easier said than done. A registered dietician can help you figure out how to read nutrition labels accurately, avoid certain foods, and stay safe. Newly developed patches and oral solutions (which have not been approved by the FDA) have been shown to decrease someone’s sensitivity over time by gradually increasing the levels of contact with an allergen. If you are experiencing uncomfortable or alarming symptoms that seem to be related to the food you eat, you may have a food intolerance or a food allergy. An allergist can make a reliable diagnosis and educate you on the next steps to take. Contemporary Flooring Trends How Do Your Floors Measure Up?

By Anne Yankus

One of the largest and most overlooked sections of your house is the floor, and nothing can spruce up a room or give it new life better than new flooring. From carpeting, hardwood floors, polished concrete, tile, or a mix of everything, changing up your floors can be a great way to give a room (or your whole house) a new look. While carpet has been the gold standard in residential flooring for many years, tile and wood have been growing in popularity. Some options off the beaten path are unusual or imported woods like bamboo, cork, or reclaimed wood, the latter of which is wood that has been repurposed from older buildings. There’s also large-format tile, which is less busy than intricate mosaics and has less grout to clean. Some other options are concrete floors or luxury vinyl, which can give you the look of wood, tile, or concrete without the cost or extra maintenance. The classic look of wood grows more popular all the time, and for good reason. However, with so many types of wood flooring out there, it can be difficult to know where to begin. The first choice is between unfinished and factory-finished wood. Unfinished wood has the finish and stain applied on-site at your home, which can be helpful with matching the coloring. Factory-finished arrives ready to install, which can save time. You must also choose between solid wood, which is cut from a solid piece of naturally-formed wood, and engineered wood, which can be made from multiple woods or wood composites. From there, you’re

38

free to choose from the many popular styles available on the market, such as bamboo, cork, or the more traditional American hardwood. If you aren’t interested in the extra maintenance and care that wood flooring requires, consider tile. As I mentioned earlier, largeformat tile is recently popular, but a little digging on Pinterest or your favorite idea-board website will reveal a lot of creative and unique patterns using smaller tiles, as well. Tile works especially well in bathrooms and kitchens, as it’s resistant to moisture and easy to clean. Simple geometric patterns in light or neutral colors bring a subtle, modern look to any room. An alternative to tile or wood is concrete.

www.womensedition.com

Concrete gained its current popularity in older buildings with subfloors and can bring a cool industrial or modern feel to your home. To make your concrete floor truly house-worthy, you’ll want to look into something a little more sleek than basic trowel or broom finishes, which are commonly found outdoors in sidewalks and driveways. For a more decorative look, stamped concrete is a nice choice, with inlaid designs that are placed on the concrete while it cures. The most popular finish for concrete floors is polished. A polished finish can be done on newly-laid concrete or even on an older concrete floor, to give it a smooth shine. Combining a polished concrete finish with pigment of satin finish is another popular choice. The only downside to concrete flooring is its lack of comfort. If you choose to have concrete flooring in an area of your house that sees a lot of foot traffic, you may want to add an area rug for extra padding. Many concrete finishes require heavy machinery to get the desired effect, so this is definitely a project for the professionals. If you’re not sold on hard flooring, carpet is still a fine choice. However, as anyone who’s had carpet can attest, it can be a pain to keep clean. Regular vacuuming is, of course, the easiest and most obvious method of soil prevention, but sometimes it’s just not enough. Giving your carpet an annual deep-cleaning is also recommended. For specific stains, immediate blotting and cleaning (with club soda or your product of choice) is the best course of action, but nothing can replace having a professional carpet cleaning on an annual or semi-annual basis. Large area rugs over hard flooring can give you the best of both worlds. These rugs can be professionally cleaned in the same manner as wall-to-wall carpeting. It’s always best to consult a professional before arbitrarily installing new floors in your home. Some floors work better in certain areas of the house, and you’ll want to take into consideration how much moisture or foot traffic you get in each area. Other things to consider are pets and children and the wear they may create on the floor. When in doubt, talk to your flooring installer about what types of flooring will work best in your home. Positive Perspective

An Infinity of Choices Trust Your Instincts

By Janet Van deWalle

“There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them.” —Denis Waitley Isn’t life amazing? Every day, we have choices, and what we choose to do with them is totally up to us. What is even more amazing is how one seemingly small choice can have long-term effects that we never even imagined. So, how are you doing with your choices? “Your life is the sum result of all the choices you make, both consciously and unconsciously. If you can control the process of choosing, you can take control of all aspects of your life. You can find the freedom that comes from being in charge of yourself.” —Robert F.
