Groundhogs, Hedgehogs, and Romance Points of Interest
An unforgettable little groundhog named Phil smacks his alarm in the early dawn on February 2nd, rubs his sleepy eyes after his long winter’s nap, and gets to work. It is still winter, but promises of spring are just around the corner. How far around the corner? Punxsutawney Phil, in his great wisdom, will enlighten us. If the groundhog sees his shadow, legend has it that he will dash back into his hole to wait out six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow, this implies an early spring. That’s the groundhog—how does the hedgehog factor into this? In Germany, the hedgehog did the work of our groundhog. German settlers in Pennsylvania saw the abundance of groundhogs, which looked similar to hedgehogs, and gave them the distinction of weatherman for 15 minutes every year. The truth is, Phil doesn’t really care about all of this. He’s looking for a sweetheart. He scopes out the territory in February to find her— hopefully, before Valentine’s Day. He lays his claim and goes back to bed until March, when they enter into wedded bliss. I recently met a hedgehog (the German version of Phil) in “person.” Her name is Cordelia. She is a tiny little thing that my kids, Michael and Valerie, were babysitting last month. Cordelia is the size of a teacup and has an attitude the size of a house. When I attempted to touch her, her quills stood up straight as she growled a tiny little growl that clearly said, “Back off!” I backed off. She went for a walk, found her toilet paper roll (no kidding!), stuck her tiny head in it, and scooted around the floor as she waddled to who-knows-where. When I was finally able to hold her, I discovered that she isn’t soft and cuddly anywhere. She made me laugh, anyway, and I fell in love. I know some people who are not warm, fuzzy, or cuddly, either. Like Cordelia and Phil, though, each one is lovable in his or her own way. You may know people like that, too…but you love them, anyway. That’s what real love is. Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be romance, roses, and fuzzy cuddles. I seek out other things that I love. Some years, I have invited friends over for a glass of champagne with raspberry hearts dropped in. We toast to our friendship! This year, we might even watch the video of Cordelia peeking through her toilet paper roll. No February would be complete without a shout out to my sister and brother and their sweethearts. Happy 54th anniversary, Barb and Gene! Happy 29th anniversary, Richard and Therese! I love you! Remember, dear readers, you are loved by all of us at Women’s Edition.

Love Is in the Air Bridal Inspirations for 2018 By Holly Bell
Since Valentine’s Day is a very popular and romantic time to get engaged, it’s a fun time to look ahead to the latest in bridal inspirations for 2018. The biggest news in bridal trends this year is going to be the plunging neckline. Brides, get ready for the sexy look you’ve been seeing on celebrities at award shows this past year—virtually every designer is featuring plunging necklines in their collections. If you go for the plunging style, be sure to secure it with tape made especially to hold the neckline in place! Many styles have built-in security but maintain the deep V-neck look by using a sheer piece of illusion netting to discreetly cover the bare space. Ready-to-wear trends for the past year have featured shoulder-baring looks along with cold shoulder cutouts. Bridal fashions in 2018 will reflect this in feminine shoulder-baring and off-the-shoulder styles. This is a flattering look for brides of any age or size, and it’s a great, modern alternative to a plunging neckline. Details are important this year, as designers have fun with bows of all sizes, in all places! A show-stopping dress by Carolina Herrera featured a huge chiffon bow at the lower back. This is a glorious place to put a statement bow, since your guests will spend most of the ceremony viewing your backside! Bows were also shown side-tied, as a belted look. Of course, all the bows were oversized, making a real focal point. Halter dresses were particularly pretty with the neckline tied in an enormous bow at the back of the neck. If you have a huge bow as a focus, remember to keep the rest of the gown simple and elegant. Also gorgeous this year is fabric detailing, with lots of hand-cut lace and floral embroideries. Of course, the classic bead-and-rhinestone–encrusted bodice is always a bridal favorite. Color is in the news for brides, too, with rose petal pink and serenity blue being the standouts. It seems as if the color trend in bridal gowns is here to stay. Designers are taking artistic license in adding color to the classic white or cream gown as an accent. Some gowns feature a simple colored ribbon tied around the waistline. A particularly spectacular gown by Marchesa featured a blush-and-ivory ombre tiered skirt. Skirting trends on bridal gowns are looking fresh in 2018. The mermaid skirt has been the most popular for years—brides have loved it for the curvy silhouette that the mermaid cut gives everyone. This year, however, the new skirt trends are draped over the body more subtly, with a flattering flow. For the bride who loves feeling like a princess, there are still layered tulle styles and cascading, full-skirted gowns that gently taper out from the waistline, creating the look of a tiny waist. If you really dare to be different, pants can be a viable bridal alternative! Most every bridal collection included a pantsuit or jumpsuit, making us think this may be an up and coming trend. Another ultra-chic and different trend was the capes. Channel your inner Snow White with a hooded lace cape for an original take on your wedding day. Bolero capes were shown topping off strapless gowns, adding a demure facet to a strapless ensemble. Even moto jackets made of leather

or lace can work for the truly modern bride. Here’s a new take on the off-the-shoulder trend: detachable sleeves! Basically, the dress is a strapless gown but with added sleeves that you can take off at the reception. Now, that’s some bold versatility! Bridal designers are offering a lot of variety in hemlines this year. Midlength gowns are a great alternative to the usual floor-length gown. It’s a retro trend with a decidedly Audrey Hepburn feel. This length is great for showing off your fabulous shoes! Keep in mind that the most flattering part of your leg is where it is slimmest. The dress needs to fall a little below the fullest part of the calf. Another uncommon hemline is the tiered skirt that is shorter in the front and longer in the back. The best of both worlds! Designers are even showing mini-skirts, worn with long, flowing veils down the back. This might be the hemline for you, if you really want to make a statement and you are fortunate enough to have great legs. There really is a hemline to suit every bride this year! Wedding ceremonies are about hope, love, and the bride and groom. They offer us a reminder that love never goes out of style! Whether or not you’re in the market for a bridal gown in 2018, let’s wish for all the love that February has to offer. Broiled Tuna Melts Make a tuna salad mixture by mixing a can of tuna (packed in oil or water) with 2–3 Tablespoons of mayonnaise, 2 diced scallions, one-fourth teaspoon of dried thyme, and salt and pepper to taste. Add some diced red or green pepper to your taste, 1 stalk of diced celery, and a splash of fresh lemon juice. Keep taste-testing and adjusting amounts. Throw in a few capers or chopped tomatoes, if you have them. Butter 4–8 pieces of ciabatta or French or Italian bread. Spread the tuna salad on the bread. Top with a slice or two of soft cheese like Muenster, Swiss, Asiago—whatever you like. Put the slices on a cookie sheet and broil for a minute or two. Watch them carefully to make sure they don’t burn. (For chicken melts, substitute chicken for the tuna.) Hot Beef Sandwiches (Great for a Super Bowl crowd!) Rub a light coating of flour over a 2–3-pound roast and sear all sides in a hot skillet with a teaspoon of oil. Place the meat in a slow cooker. Add 1 cut-up onion and 2 cloves of garlic, along with salt and pepper. Add 1 can of beef broth and 1 envelope of dry onion soup. Cook on low for 6–8 hours. Remove the meat to a platter. Pour the juices into a saucepan, skim off the fat, and heat for 10–15 minutes to reduce. Slice the meat into sandwich portions. Serve on toasted rolls, with juice on the side. Cheese is optional. White Chicken Chili Heat 2 Tablespoons of oil in a soup pot. Add 1 small diced onion, 1 chopped carrot, and 1 stalk of chopped celery. Sauté for 3–4 minutes. Add 4 cups of cooked chicken (use a rotisserie chicken
as a shortcut), 4 cups of chicken broth, 3 cans of cannellini beans, and 1 can of Ro-Tel tomatoes. Stir well. Add 1 teaspoon of cumin. Add salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for an hour. Quick Skillet Tilapia Heat 3 Tablespoons of olive oil and 3 Tablespoons of butter in a large skillet. Stir in 2 teaspoons of Old Bay or Cajun seasoning, 1 teaspoon of dried basil, and 3 cloves of sliced garlic. Add the tilapia and cook each side until golden (take care—tilapia cooks quickly!). Salt and pepper to taste. Squeeze the juice from half a lemon over the top and baste with the pan juices. Serve with rice. German Chocolate Brownies Gently melt 1 stick of butter and 1 chopped 4-ounce bar of sweet cooking chocolate (sometimes called German chocolate). Let cool. Add one-half cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and 2 eggs, and beat well. Add 1 cup of flour mixed with one-half teaspoon of baking powder and one-fourth teaspoon of salt. Spread in a greased 9-inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 18–20 minutes. Mix 2 Tablespoons of butter with one-half cup of brown sugar, 2 Tablespoons of light corn syrup, and 2 Tablespoons of milk. Blend well. Mix in 1 cup of shredded coconut and one-half cup of chopped pecans. Drop by teaspoons over the warm brownies and spread gently. Broil 4 inches from heat for about a minute, watching carefully. Cool and cut. Editor’s Note: Kate has been an Omaha area culinary instructor since 1997. She attended The Institute for the Culinary Arts at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha. WE

Dimensions Spa “Where Aches and Age Fade Away” By Brenda Gracely
February is the month of hearts and flowers and special gifts for your special someone (or for yourself!). If you’re in the mood for spa offerings like facials, paramedical skin services, or a relaxing massage, Dimensions Spa can provide just what you’re looking for. Jack Danielsen is a certified paramedical aesthetician (PME) and aesthetician instructor with almost 20 years of experience. He opened Dimensions Spa in 2012 with his partner, Devin, so they could tailor treatments to their clients’ needs. “Skin care is not one size fits all,” Jack notes. After consulting with Jack, clients receive customized skin care treatments to achieve their healthiest skin. Each day, your skin feels the effects of the environment. Pollution, toxins, wind, and UV rays can all cause undetectable damage. A lesser-known fact that can lead to skin damage is that UVA rays are just as strong on cloudy days as they are on sunny days. The natural aging process also affects skin and can contribute to enzyme loss, reduced collagen, and dehydration. This combination of factors can speed up the development of free radicals that stop skin cells from performing at their best. This ultimately leads to declines in elasticity, tone, and texture. Aging skin starts sooner than you think! After the age of 20, a person produces one percent less collagen in her skin each year. “Prevention is always the ideal path to healthy skin,” Jack asserts. “However, when repair is needed, it doesn’t have to be invasive or time-consuming. The HydraFacial MD and the Perk skin care systems that we offer provide quick, precise, and controlled treatment to the skin in order to accelerate the amount of repair in response to the inflammation.” “These treatments address specific skin concerns and are effective for every skin type,” Jack continues. “The HydraFacial MD resurfacing procedure uses patented technology in a treatment that detoxifies, rejuvenates, and protects skin for immediate results and longterm benefits without downtime or irritation. We then relieve the inflammation or calm the skin before the client leaves. We also offer Perk, an anti-aging add-on treatment that more effectively targets and protects lips and areas around the eyes. After treatment, our clients can maintain results at home with Daily Essentials, featuring the same ingredients used in the treatments.” Improving the skin from the inside out is the beauty of these treatments. The skin is hydrated via vortex infusion, which delivers the benefits of a peel without the post-peel scaling. Vital nutrients, including antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid, replenish the skin and help mitigate environmental damage, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and

plump and firm skin for long-term results that clients can see and feel instantly. “We like to think of Dimensions as an affordable luxury spa with a family focus. Many of our clients are teenagers who come to us for treatment of acne and acne scarring,” Jack explains. “As a result, their parents learn about our many spa offerings, and so it becomes a family affair.” One excellent treatment for acne and acne scars is microneedling. Because microneedling results in a reduction in sebum production and makes the skin less oily, it can also help stop acne from reappearing. Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment to rejuvenate the skin. A device with fine needles creates tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin, which triggers the body to create new collagen and elastin. Other results can include improved texture and firmness, as well as a reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks. Microneedling also helps with skin tone and can reduce hyper-pigmentation. Finally, it prepares the skin for better absorption of topical treatments, like PRP (platelet rich plasma) or other vitamin-rich serums. Devin is the spa’s medical massage therapist, specializing in neuromuscular and trigger point therapy. Trigger point therapy follows the same meridians as acupuncture and works well for sports injuries or problems that can occur after accidents. Devin also offers Swedish massage, deep tissue body work, and hot stone massage. The hot stone massage is designed to deliver a deep tissue massage without the discomfort that can ensue when muscles are not completely relaxed. “By placing hot stones on specific spots, the muscles are heated deeply, relaxing the muscles for a better massage,” Devin explains. “Applying light and deeper strokes also helps to keep muscles from tensing.” Dimensions’ newly added 2018 Premier Treatment will be eyelash enhancements. These will be administered by the Danielsens’ licensed esthetician, Janae Martinez, who is training to become a paramedical aesthetician. Leasing Versus Buying Which One Makes Financial Sense for You? By Brennan Hallock
If you have ever driven a new vehicle off the lot, you know the excitement that comes with it. The new car smell, the smooth handling, and the exciting convenience features are only a few of the many benefits of acquiring a new vehicle. There’s one question that more and more drivers are struggling to answer before they drive away: “Should I lease, or should I buy?” For a long time, leasing was primarily concentrated in the luxury vehicle market, so many drivers didn’t give it a second thought. This has begun to change. These days, leasing options are offered for more economy and basic vehicles, as well. Add to this the consistently low interest rates, and leasing has become a tempting option for many drivers shopping for a new vehicle. Before you head down to the dealership, you should know the key differences between leasing a vehicle and buying one. The main difference, of course, is ownership. When buying, you buy the vehicle, either by paying for it up front or financing it with a loan. When leasing, the dealer retains ownership, and you pay a monthly fee to use the vehicle for the duration of the lease. At the end of the lease, you can generally choose to return the vehicle, trade it in, or purchase it. Buying almost always involves higher monthly costs and more cash up front, since you pay the full value of the vehicle. Leasing payments are only for the use of the vehicle during the lease term, and they mainly cover depreciation. This makes the cost of leasing much more manageable than buying for many drivers. When the term of a lease is finished, the lessee can take the vehicle back to the dealership, pay any end-of-contract fees, and walk away. This can be an advantage, as it is much less hassle and responsibility than trying to sell or trade in a vehicle that you own. When an owner goes to sell her vehicle, she often discovers that it has depreciated considerably. Vehicles tend to depreciate at a rate unlike almost anything else in their price range. It has been estimated that a new vehicle loses approximately 20 percent of its value as soon as it leaves the lot. When a driver leases a vehicle, the responsibility for depreciation is assumed by the dealership rather than by the driver. Leasing does have some limitations that may be disadvantages, depending on your driving situation. High mileage can lower the resale value of a vehicle. Therefore, most leases limit the number of miles that you are allowed to drive. If you exceed your limit (often 12,000–15,000 miles per year), you will be charged for the extra miles. Owning means you can drive any number of miles you like. You, as the owner, assume responsibility for the depreciation caused by high mileage. While leasing does provide some flexibility, you cannot simply choose to turn in your vehicle at any
time without being penalized. If you own a vehicle, you can sell it whenever you choose and recoup some of the value. With a lease, you are locked into a term (usually, about three years). You can incur heavy penalties if you end the lease early. In order to determine whether leasing is right for you, you should ask yourself some questions. How much cash do you have available to put down on a new vehicle? If the number is low, leasing may be a better financial choice. How much do you drive each year? If you tend to take long road trips or regularly commute long distances, then the mileage limitations of a lease may cramp your style. If you just need a vehicle to get you around town, then leasing may be a good option. How long would you like to keep the vehicle? If you like to upgrade to a new vehicle every few years, then leasing will almost certainly be the cheaper option. If you like to hold onto one vehicle for most of its life, though, you sound more like a buyer. Finally, how good is your credit? Leasing is difficult (or expensive) if your credit rating is poor. Of course, bad credit can also be a problem if you want to buy but need to finance. When you buy with cash, or at least a large down payment, your credit rating is a smaller part of the equation. Once you’ve decided to lease, check into multiple dealerships. Just like with buying, shopping around can help you find a better deal. Different dealerships offer different rates and terms. Once you’ve found an option that fits your budget and needs, you can enjoy the excitement of driving a new vehicle without the responsibility of owning it. A Woman’s Work
Love Story How Does Love Last?
By Sharon Knierim
Everybody seems to have their own love story, though perhaps nobody is quite as interested in our love stories as we ourselves are. Love can carry us through both hard times and good times as we navigate through our lives. Love is precious, and love is kind, if we allow it to be so. Love is not a tangible thing. We try to examine it frequently and wonder what it is. How does it bind us together so strongly? Is it no more than a chemical or physical reaction to another person? Most of us do not think so. What very often begins as a simple attraction will, if given time and care, blossom into a sustaining force that unites us. It is an undeniable force that bonds us together, grows and changes over time, and can turn into a sustaining partnership. Sometimes, we’re not even sure why we love the people we love. There are, of course, many kinds of human love. A mother’s love for her child, for example, is a tough bond to break. Once that connection is made, it is pretty permanent for most motherand-child duos. Sometimes, it may seem that our mothers do not love or even like us very much when they scold or correct our behavior, but we all know that it is for “our own good” (or, at least, that’s what we’re repeatedly told). Very often it takes becoming a
mother to recognize that this is true. Children of the world: Do not doubt your mother…she is always right, and you will turn into her someday, so listen up! For many people, loving the god they worship is the foundation of their being. It is the flame in our hearts that keeps us going when our path is unclear or when we are unsure of ourselves and, perhaps, unsure of those around us. We love our country because that, too, is part of our lives and helps define who we are. Because we are human, most of us are interested in romantic love. This is often the fun kind of love. someone is exciting! At the same time, it gives us the opportunity to learn more about ourselves as we explore a new relationship and discover how love grows and fits into our lives. There cannot possibly be anyone on this planet who does not remember meeting his or her spouse for the first time. Now, there may well be more than one version of this meeting—one sweetheart sees it one way, while the other one remembers the event totally differently. Upon meeting my future husband for the first time, I had the feeling that this would be the man I would marry, even though courtship and marriage were the last things on my mind in those days. Enjoying being a single young woman had so much appeal to this former farm girl turned career woman, college student, athlete, and fun seeker. Why would I want to have a steady boyfriend, much less a husband? Still, in the back of my mind and probably my heart, too, this boy did make an impression on me. When he finally broke up with the girl he had been seeing, he did ask me out on a date. For our first date, he stood me up! For our second date, he brought along his best friend. Not a promising start. After those two dates, I decided that I couldn’t stand him. Of course, that all changed by the third, fourth, and fifth dates. My would-be husband finally proposed marriage to me while I was in the hospital, shrouded by an oxygen tent. This girl was not feeling romantic at the time. He was persistent, though, and waited until I had recovered from pneumonia. I am glad he was persistent. Finally, after trying all kinds of approaches to the marriage question, he produced something of a flowchart exhibiting the financial benefits of marriage. Oddly, that’s what won me over. The rest is history. Why do we fall in love, and how do we keep that love strong? Maybe it’s the constant discovery about that other person that is so fascinating. What often begins as passion grows into companionship and understanding, a sense of belonging. How does it happen that some of us grow in our love for each other? Maybe it’s luck. Nobody knows for sure, but why bring into question something that works so well? Do you have a love story close to your heart? If so, share it with someone else. The love you send forth will come back to you multiplied. WE

Serious Surgical Solutions The Latest Procedures From the Neck Down By Kylie Gumpert
When it comes to taking the plunge and deciding to get plastic surgery, are you worried that you won’t be pleased with the results? That you’ll regret your decision? No question about it—these are exactly the sorts of questions you should be asking yourself. As any reputable plastic surgeon will tell you, surgery is a big deal, and it should be taken very seriously. However, a frank conversation with a trusted surgeon will go a long way toward getting your questions answered and your fears eased. If your surgeon agrees that making a surgical change will help you be more comfortable in your skin and in your everyday life, then it’s worth considering. Before you talk to your surgeon, you need some idea of what you might want to have done. What are the popular procedures today in the field of bodily cosmetic surgery? Since 2000, the two most popular non-facial plastic surgeries have been breast augmentation and liposuction. Breast augmentation is used to increase breast size and fullness and to achieve balance. The procedure is often done in combination with a breast lift, to restore shape and a more youthful breast position. Breast lifts have grown increasingly popular and are also performed in combination with breast reductions. In cases where a woman has had a mastectomy or lumpectomy, breast reconstruction surgery can help rebuild breast shape, size, and symmetry, restoring the patient’s confidence. In many augmentations, implants are inserted alongside breast tissue. Sometimes, fat from other parts of the body is transferred to the breasts to increase size or improve shape. Implants may be filled with silicone, which is a viscous gel, or saline, which is liquid. “Gummy bear” implants are made from a thicker silicone gel that is shaped—if these implants rotate for some reason, an additional procedure may be required to correct their positioning. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 86 percent of augmentation patients opt for silicone implants, most likely because silicone implants feel more like natural breast tissue and are less likely to leak. Excessively large breasts can be extremely uncomfortable, both physically and socially. An excessively large chest may inhibit movement, impact a woman’s ability to exercise, and cause back pain or skin rashes. Breast reduction surgery can provide muchneeded relief from these symptoms. Procedures may involve surgically removing fatty tissue and excess skin, sometimes in combination with liposuction. In some cases, liposuction alone can sufficiently reduce breast size. (One important note: Most cosmetic surgical procedures are not covered by insurance. Breast reduction, on the other hand, may be covered if you can demonstrate that the excess weight of your breasts is causing physical trauma that the surgery would relieve. Talk to your surgeon.) Liposuction is used to reduce fat or improve proportion
16
on many areas of the body. It is not a cure for obesity, it cannot replace the visible benefits of proper diet and exercise, and it is not effective on cellulite. However, it is extremely effective at permanently and immediately removing stubborn fat deposits. It can be used in combination with other surgeries and is performed on many different parts of the body, including the thighs, hips, upper arms, calves, ankles, and inner knee. To perform liposuction, the surgeon makes a small incision and then inserts a small tube with a surgical vacuum attached to it. Fat is loosened by moving the tube back and forth. The fat is then suctioned out of the body by the vacuum. Considerable bruising can be expected, but the results are undeniable. Liposuction is often used to reduce fat during a tummy tuck procedure, in which excess abdominal fat and skin are removed and the underlying muscle is rejuvenated or repaired to create a smoother, slimmer stomach. Less invasive fat reduction procedures don’t offer the dramatic results of liposuction, but they are less expensive and are easier to recover from. CoolSculpting, for example, features a cooling mechanism that freezes fat cells, killing them so that the body can gradually flush them out. Another method, called truSculpt, uses radio-frequency waves to achieve the same result. Sessions for these noninvasive procedures usually last around an hour, and they may require more than one visit. Final results can been seen over the course of a few weeks to a few months (compared to the immediate results of liposuction). Buttock augmentation, labiaplasty, and the lower body lift are not the most common cosmetic body procedures, but they are growing in popularity. A buttock augmentation is done to modify the size and shape of a woman’s backside. As with breast augmentation, this surgery may involve inserting silicone implants. Some patients choose what is commonly known as a Brazilian
www.womensedition.com
butt lift. This procedure, technically called buttock augmentation with fat grafting, involves taking unwanted fat from a different part of the body and injecting it into the buttocks. With the labiaplasty procedure, the size and shape of the labia are surgically adjusted. This procedure will reduce what can be painful or uncomfortable tugging or pulling in this delicate area. Significant weight loss, dramatic fluctuations in weight, or simply the change in skin elasticity caused by the aging process can all result in sagging skin below the belt. A lower body lift is done to improve the appearance of sagging skin on a patient’s abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. Skin and fat will be removed to improve skin appearance and elasticity, most commonly by making an incision around the entire waist and removing a band of tissue. This procedure is also known as belt lipectomy. With almost all of these procedures, it’s difficult to know what the results will look like on your body until everything’s all said and done. That can feel like a big risk—and it should! Fortunately, technology is solving this problem. Helpful 3D imaging simulations can give you an accurate idea of what the results of your procedure will look like on your body. The Vectra 3D imaging system, for example, is commonly used to capture photos of a patient’s face or breasts and then create 3D images that can be viewed from all angles. The system can be used to capture images of other parts of the body, as well, to create renderings for other procedures. Your surgeon can use these images to explain the limitations of various procedures and offer other surgical options that might work better for you. Of course, it’s vital to choose a surgeon who is certified, who is experienced in performing the procedures you want to have done, and who you trust. If you know people who have undergone

the procedure you’re considering, ask them about their surgeons. Your regular doctor may also be able to recommend someone. If you’re starting from scratch, you can search for surgeons in your area on the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery’s website (AmericanBoardCosmeticSurgery.com). When you’re comfortable with your surgeon, it’s easier to be comfortable with your surgery. Taking advantage of 3D imaging is also a great way to feel confident about your surgical decisions and the expected results. However, something that not everyone considers is the psychological and emotional impact of undergoing cosmetic surgery. Even the most confident of patients may feel nervous before going “under the knife.” In the days immediately following the procedure, you may have feelings of doubt, worry, or regret. For a couple of months after your surgery, you may feel like you’ve made a mistake or worry that you just don’t look like yourself, according to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. These feelings are very common. Don’t forget to give yourself a break—remember, you’ve just had surgery, and your body needs time to recover! Once your body has had several months to heal and you’ve had time to adjust to your new features, you (like the majority of patients) will likely be very happy with the results. It’s perfectly normal to be worried about making the decision to pursue plastic surgery—in fact, it’s a good sign that you’re taking the issue seriously. There’s no need to spend every day feeling uncomfortable in your own skin. There are so many resources today to address the physical features that you feel are holding you back. Start your journey today to see if cosmetic bodily surgery is something that can help you live your life to the fullest! Bathroom Bliss Even Bathrooms Deserve a Little Luxury
By Robyn V. Powell
Bathrooms have replaced kitchens as the most remodeled room in the home…and not just the master bathroom. Whether you’re building, remodeling, or just dreaming, exploring beautiful bathroom design will inspire you to change the way you think about this key area of your home. The bathroom doesn’t have to be all about function. Beautiful form can make the difference between a room designed to simply serve a utilitarian purpose and one that feels like a relaxing retreat. One common thread that is expected to continue through 2018 is homeowners’ desire to break out of the mold and make their space their own. When it comes to bathrooms, homeowners are looking to technology, bold accents, and luxe amenities to give their space personality and turn the room into a sanctuary. Brass fixtures, bold color, and patterned tile are a few of the latest trends showing up in bathrooms everywhere. More than ever, homeowners are viewing the master bath as a place of peace and solitude—a secluded retreat designed to help them escape from the rest of the world. While much of the attention has been on the shower in recent years, the bathtub is once again making a splash! More beautiful and spacious than their predecessors, modern tubs are designed for ultimate relaxation. The sophisticated island tub, available in a multitude of shapes, delivers maximum “Wow!” factor when placed in the center of the room. Deep, freestanding soaking tubs are the go-to amenity
for luxury homeowners looking for a place to unwind. With no jets, the simple soaker tub provides a peaceful experience and is available in stylish finishes such as porcelain, concrete, copper, and stainless steel. Whirlpool bathtubs—using water jets, air jets, or a combination of both—remain popular as stress relievers and as a way to massage tired muscles. Whether it’s bath time or shower time, bathing is the perfect time to indulge all the senses with options like built-in audio systems, mood-enhancing colors known as chromatherpy, and even tub-side refrigeration. Fully loaded showers feature systems for water temperature and pressure, steam, and built-in stereo or television, all controlled from an LCD screen mounted on the shower wall. To conserve water, luxury bathrooms can be equipped with environmentally friendly low-flow toilets and showerheads or touchless faucets. Bathroom vanities can set the tone of any bathroom. In the bathroom, the availability of good cabinet space and functionality is just as important as style, and, with the high moisture content and everyday use, investing in high-quality cabinetry is essential. ›››

While granite and marble remain popular countertop choices, you might also consider engineered stone in this moistureheavy room. Engineered stone not only emulates the character of natural stone, it is also maintenance-free; won’t crack, stain, or scratch; and resists mold and mildew growth. Decorative floor and shower tiles in bold Mediterranean motifs are trending this year. Whether you prefer intricate Moroccan-inspired patterns or bold geometric shapes, these colorful ceramics can freshen any space, add an exotic flair, and evoke the feeling of being permanently on vacation! Ceramic tile that looks exactly like real wood (but doesn’t warp from moisture like wood might) is also a popular flooring choice in the bathroom. Whatever your choice of flooring, consider incorporating radiant heat. Not only will it feel pleasantly warm underfoot on cold mornings, it promotes faster drying, reducing the risk of slips and falls. Petite powder baths typically don’t see a lot of traffic, giving homeowners an opportunity to focus on the form. You can splurge and bring something fun or sculptural into this small space. Handcrafted sinks are making a big comeback. From intricately carved pottery sinks to gleaming metals like hammered copper, handcrafted sinks come in all shapes and sizes and are akin to a piece of fine art, personalizing and upgrading your space. In children’s bathrooms, where surfaces and fixtures will see lots of wear and tear, the focus is on durability and finishes that can stand up to heavy use. Pair granite or engineered stone countertops with bright, scratch-resistant chrome fixtures. Installing a fan with humidity sensors ensures proper ventilation in case kids forget to turn the fan on or off. For the ultimate in spa-like experience, consider a heated towel rack. No need to endure the post-shower chill ever again! What could be more luxurious than wrapping yourself in a toasty towel? Available in wallmounted or freestanding units, some have a programmable time function that allows you to dry off with a towel heated precisely how and when you want it! Take a look around your bathroom and see if it could use a little love. Don’t neglect this functional space in your home! With some imagination, your bathroom could become your favorite room in the house. Sources for this article included: consumerreports.org, www.nari.org, and realtor.com. WE February 2018

The year-round core staff at Your TaxLady includes 10 dedicated women, all certified in their areas of expertise: Kati, Heather, Kumi, Renee, Rebecca, Jennifer, Tippi, Karen W., and Karen M. They provide total financial services for small business clients year-round. During the 14 weeks of tax season, they handle all kinds of individual tax preparation, from Form 1040EZ to trusts and estates with wills and business returns. Kathy lived in Colorado Springs previously, raising six children. The family moved around a bit, but she eventually headed back to the Springs to retire. As she soon found out, retirement didn’t fit her. With years of professional experience in taxes, she began Your TaxLady with a mind to help small businesses. Colorado Springs has a high percentage of small businesses. In order to survive, a small business should spend its first five years focused on getting a solid footing. Many times, new businesses do not have the time or expertise to handle their accounting. Your TaxLady advises on all issues that may arise in these areas. “Don’t try to learn another profession,” Kathy advises small business owners. “We’ll do the accounting, we’ll do the bookkeeping, and we’ll do the taxes, so you can do what you do best.” Kathy is knowledgeable in a start-up’s needs. “As a business owner, you’re bombarded with people who want to help with the advertising, with the marketing, with the SEO fun stuff. I can tell you, especially during the first couple of years, what to wait on and what to do more of, so you aren’t spending more money than you have.” That even applies to Your TaxLady’s fees—they start low so new business owners can afford to get their accounting done right. The Your TaxLady team strives to make their clients comfortable and at ease, whether those clients are artists, photographers, crafters, or construction workers. The small size of their office means they can get to know you and provide personalized service. You can outsource any or all of your small business accounting. Kati, their certified professional bookkeeper, shares, “When you contract with us, we get to know you on a first-name basis. I know you, I know your schedules, I know what you’re doing with your business, I know what kind of things you’re looking to do in the future. I try to make it simple and not overwhelm you with tax lingo. Just give me your stuff and forget about it. I will
24
let you know if there is something to be aware of, so you aren’t surprised.” Why use Your TaxLady rather than a do-it-yourself software solution? First of all, if you don’t have an accounting background, you may encounter a lot of terminology you don’t understand. Also, consider how software changes every year and, more critically, how IRS regulations and standards change. Your TaxLady keeps up with it all. It is a benefit to have someone who knows what to look for, such as your business structure requirements and what tax liabilities may arise. For example, software doesn’t tell you who needs a 1099 form. Your TaxLady ensures that your due diligence is met and, if necessary, can even work on issues that come up with the IRS on your behalf. Suzette Megyeri and her husband, Kevin, own Skirted Heifer Burgers and Bambinos Urban Pizzeria. They have been with Your TaxLady for 10 years or better. “They have a lot of systems—you know exactly when your dates are and when you have to turn things in,” Suzette shares. “It’s nice to know what’s expected of you. They are current with technology, and the communication is terrific. I can call them about anything—if they don’t know, they will research it. If one of my employees has a question on their tax form, I call Kathy. They are part of our team. They are professionals, and I think they save me money.” Schedule your free initial consultation and find out how Your TaxLady can make taxes or small business accounting stress-free. Reach them by phone at 719548-4924 or by email at officemgr@taxladyllc.com. Visit their website at www.taxladyllc.com. They’re conveniently located at 401 Windchime Place in Rockrimmon, Colorado Springs. WE

Independent Retirement Living Exciting Options for Today’s Seniors
By Linda Barnes
Senior housing choices are more attractive than ever before. This is good news for today’s seniors, many of whom are retiring while they are still healthy and active. Many of the options also appeal to empty nesters who plan to keep working but wish to downsize. It’s all the freedom and independence you want, without the burden of maintenance and upkeep! Whether you’re looking for a 55+ community, a senior apartment, elder housing, or a continuing care village, there is sure to be a solution for happy and
active living during your later years. We can choose to own or lease. Homes, townhouses, condos, and apartments are available in many locations. Amenities abound, specially designed for senior lifestyles. A senior living community near my home is convenient to shopping, health care, and entertainment. Choices include studio apartments with patio and kitchenette. Spacious one- and two-bedroom apartments are additional options. Everyone can enjoy the library, walking paths, and on-site activities. Laundry and housekeeping options make for easy living. Activities such as crafts, billiards, a community garden, computer room, fitness area, game rooms, and chef-prepared meals provide opportunities for social interaction. Parking is available for those who drive, and complimentary transportation is provided for those who do not. A nice feature of this particular community is that rental is on a month-to-month basis. Spacious outdoor common areas and indoor lounges are a plus. Now to the question that is sure to arise: “What can I afford?” A personal financial advisor can help with crucial retirement planning. Downsizing early frees seniors up for travel and can ease the burden on family later on. Some senior community websites provide a helpful calculator that compares present income and expenses to various options in the community. More upscale senior communities offer resort-type ambience. These luxurious communities offer such amenities as indoor pool, spa, fitness facility, five-star dining, salon, and laundry and housekeeping services. Tennis and golf are often available on site. Concierge and chauffeur services make these communities feel more like vacationing than retirement living. Of course, high-end, resort-style retirement comes with a higher price tag. Often, a sizable upfront entrance fee is required. However, you might expect a large portion of the entrance fee to be returned to you, if you move, or to your estate, if you stay there through the end of your life. This could be part of a strategy to preserve your asset base. Unlike the retirement community in my neighborhood, which consists of apartments only, some 55+ communities are made up of homes, townhouses, and condos. They may have a centrally
located clubhouse with dining and recreational facilities. Planned activities are supplemented by residents’ own interest groups. Such groups might focus on crafting, cards, quilting, writing, walking, tennis, or golf. Residents pay an association fee to cover the cost of maintaining property and to meet community expenses. These 55+ communities are age-restricted and are managed by a non-resident owner. A more recent entry into this arena is the concept of co-housing. Attached homes or condos are organized on a common property. Instead of professional, non-resident ownership, the residents own and manage their common property. This option appeals to many seniors and empty nesters who are ready to downsize but are still quite active. The homes are smaller, occupy less land, and are often quite energy efficient. Future residents typically buy in during the development of the community. A common house with a kitchen, dining room, and living room is often a feature. It may also have two or three bedrooms to accommodate guests. The emphasis is very much on community: bonding, caring for each other, sharing some meals, and working together to manage the community. All options designed for senior living typically include features that make aging in place easier for residents. These include things like no-step entries, elevators, wider doorways, extra lighting, and grab bars in bathrooms—all designed to accommodate the needs of seniors. The continuing care community is an additional option. Here, one might begin in accommodations designed for seniors who are healthy and active enough to live without assistance. On the same grounds are facilities for assisted living, should that become necessary after surgery or when help is needed with activities of daily living. These communities avoid the necessity of moving from location to location as needs change. A third component of the continuing care arrangement is skilled nursing care. This option provides a great deal of security, knowing that you will be able to stay in the same community even if it becomes impossible to remain independent. Lose Fat, Not Time Nonsurgical Body Sculpting By Loretta McCollum
Every day, you rise before dawn, stumble out the door, and stagger into the gym. Your eating habits are cleaner than an operating room. You do everything right, but your love handles linger, and your muffin top won’t melt. What can you do to shrink those stubborn fat pockets that diet and exercise won’t touch? That is, what can you do if you don’t want to undergo surgery? Today’s technology provides several procedures that utilize heat, cold, ultrasonic waves, and lasers, some of which permanently destroy fat cells with little or no downtime. These aren’t your mother’s cellophane wraps! Results are usually long-term, and there is very little discomfort. These procedures are typically best for people who are slightly to moderately overweight. Most of these procedures can be performed over the lunch hour, allowing you to return to your daily routine immediately. Want to melt away those fat cells while comfortably relaxing? SculpSure is a laser technology that involves wrapping a belt-like device around the target area; the device delivers heated laser pulses to melt fat. It’s effective on multiple body types and is typically applied to the upper and lower abdomen or the flank area between the ribs and hip. During the 25-minute treatment, fat cells are literally destroyed while you recline, read, or take a nap. Once destroyed, those cells will not regenerate. Your body will naturally flush out the dead cells. This is a gradual process; you
26
can expect to see your results over a period of several weeks. If you love getting a hot stone massage, consider truSculpt. This procedure utilizes radio-frequency technology to diminish fat cells in larger areas like the abdomen. One treatment lasts about an hour. Patients can return to their normal routine immediately following the treatment. Results are usually visible after about six weeks as the body breaks down the targeted fat cells and eliminates them. Some individuals opt for a second treatment for fine tuning. Vanquish is another radio-frequency option for that pesky belly flab. It involves a series of four weekly treatments to permanently eliminate fat cells. Picture yourself stretched out and relaxed as a horseshoe-shaped apparatus is placed over the target area. Once turned on, it feels much like a heat lamp on a low setting. After 45 minutes, a technician may administer a Cellutone treatment to mechanically massage and smooth out the area that was treated.
www.womensedition.com
Heat and cold may be opposites, but they both have incredible power to destroy fat cells. Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than other tissues, which allows techniques like CoolSculpting to use cold to kill fat cells without harming the surrounding tissue. During treatment, a handheld applicator, applied to the skin, supplies targeted cooling to the fat cells underneath. As it does after radio-frequency treatments, the body then metabolizes and eventually eliminates the dead cells. CoolSculpting is a good option for muffin tops, saddle bags, and belly fat. Successive treatments provide enhanced results. Ultrasonic energy can also be channeled to obliterate troublesome fatty areas. UltraShape is a procedure in which ultrasonic energy pulses destroy the fat cell walls, releasing the fat as triglycerides, which are then processed by the liver and eliminated naturally. A special belt is wrapped around the treatment area and a gel is applied to the skin. A trained technician moves a handheld device over the area, delivering painless ultrasonic pulses. Initial results may be visible after just two weeks. Treatments are administered three times per week over a four-week period. Some areas, including the hips, thighs, and upper arms, are particularly resistant to efforts to tone and shape. Lipo-Light is a technique that blends tradition and technology. It combines LED light therapy with posttreatment physical exercise. The light therapy penetrates the skin and opens the fat cell walls, allowing the contents to escape. Once the fat escapes, it travels through the body as fatty acids to tissue, where it is then burned off during post-treatment exercise. A typical Lipo-Light session includes 20 minutes of treatment followed by about 10 minutes of exercise. The initial treatment cycle is two treatments per week for four weeks. Many patients return for maintenance sessions. Lipo-Light produces long-term results in conjunction with exercise and a healthy diet. An added benefit of Lipo-Light is that it has the potential to increase collagen levels, firming the skin and enhancing the body sculpting effects of the treatment. It’s important to remember that many of these procedures produce gradual results over several weeks but that the results are long-lasting. To find out which of these procedures best suits your needs, consult a local plastic surgeon, dermatologist, or medi-spa. Studio 27 Aesthetics Enhance Your Natural Beauty By Libby Kinder
Studio 27 Aesthetics, located in Old Colorado City, is a physiciansupervised aesthetic care studio. Owner Michael Bradburry, RN, has 35 years of nursing experience, including 20 years in the field of aesthetics. She and her staff implement the latest beauty enhancement services and live by their motto: “Integrity, Trust, and Experience.” Michael was a neonatal intensive care nurse for 25 years before she got into her current specialty. “I had the opportunity to join a medical practice that provided me with extensive training in aesthetics,” she says. “I continued with advanced training and earned yearly advanced certifications.” For office management and marketing, Michael depends on Silvana, who has worked with Michael since 2008. Studio 27 fits right in with the welcoming atmosphere and feel-good ambience of Old Colorado City. When stepping through the doors of Studio 27, clients will enjoy a friendly, relaxed boutique atmosphere rather than a clinical environment. Client Margot B. appreciates the attention to detail. “The studio is clean, and services are superior,” she reports. “I’ve been coming to Michael for
years, and my skin issues and problems have been solved. I highly recommend Studio 27.” Clients can access a wide variety of services at Studio 27, including sclerotherapy (to treat spider veins in the legs), microneedling (including the plasma-rich protein facial), and medicalgrade chemical peels. The focus, however, is primarily on injectables like Botox and fillers. Michael often explains the difference between these two types of injectable treatments. Botox is injected and used to improve the look of moderate to severe wrinkle lines. It relaxes the underlying

At first it was a stab in the dark; would this form of exposure work or would I need to look for another venue to get my services noticed? I have been very pleased with the quality of the magazine, the staff I have worked with, and most of all the quality of prospects who have become wonderful clients. I wholeheartedly recommend advertising in this publication.” —Pauli Hubbard, CFP with Creative Financial Services, Inc.

muscle, softening the area being treated. Fillers, on the other hand, are used to replace volume loss under the skin. “As we age and lose fullness, skin starts to sag,” Michael says. This is a natural process—if there’s less volume underneath the skin, the skin in that area will wrinkle and sag. One nonsurgical solution to the problem of volume loss is an injectable filler. Michael typically uses the Allergan product line, as it has a variety of effective filler options. Fillers are routinely done one time per year, and Botox is injected three to four times per year. Although injections can be made more often, Michael avoids this if it’s not necessary. “I lean toward the conservative side because fillers and Botox are made to enhance our natural beauty,” Michael asserts. “My philosophy is to provide a conservative treatment, to help the client stay focused and avoid overinjecting.” Injectables available at Studio 27 include Botox, Xeomin, Juvederm (including Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella), and Kybella. Other products available include Latisse, Babe Lash, and Obagi. Client Jocelyn S. states, “Love the Studio. Michael is knowledgeable and really cares about the outcome of your service. The Studio is a great environment—friendly, with a very supportive staff. I have gotten many services and go there regularly. Hands down, the best place I know! I am so grateful for the service and quality care and attention given to me and all my friends (who now also love going there). I hope you, too, will check this place out!”
A complimentary consultation is offered to anyone interested in services at Studio 27. This consultation is a vital part of treatment, Michael notes, so each client understands what kind of outcomes she can expect. “Each client comes in for her consultation, and then I make a portfolio plan to educate her. This education is important so that her expectations meet the likely outcome of the treatment.” After this initial evaluation, a treatment plan is made, costs are reviewed, and a timeline is presented. Brilliant Distinctions benefits are available, as is Care Credit. For clients’ convenience, appointment bookings are typically done online. Satisfied client Jennifer B. shares her thoughts about Studio 27: “First, the service— it was awesome! She gave me a fantastic peel. Then she told me about services that may work for my skin and products that I may enjoy, but she was not pushy or salesmanlike. It was kind of like a friend sharing, which I appreciated. The customer service was amazing. I really like the space and, of course, enjoy traveling to the Old Colorado City area. They will have a faithful customer in me!” Studio 27 Aesthetics is located at 2631 West Colorado Avenue, in Colorado Springs. They can be reached by phone at 719-329-0304. Their website, studio27co.com, contains a wealth of information about services, procedures, and products available in the studio. “I feel beautiful again,” says client Angel. “Thank you so much, Michael! You are the best!” Come feel beautiful at Studio 27! WE

Do Circumstances and Choices Define You? Accept Responsibility and Allow Them to Redefine You
By Janet Van deWalle
We are all where we are in life because of a combination of circumstances, choices, and, sometimes, a little luck. While many of us are quick to blame our problems on circumstances or bad luck, fewer of us are willing to accept responsibility for the choices we’ve made that have led us to our current circumstances. It is much easier for us to blame others for our problems. “Responsibility: A detachable burden easily shifted to the shoulders of God, Fate, Fortune, Luck or one’s neighbor. In the days of astrology it was customary to unload it upon a star.” —Ambrose Bierce The problem with perpetually living in this state of feeling that circumstances and your happiness are out of your control, often leaves people feeling like a helpless victim. So what would happen if we chose to accept responsibility for our actions and choices? What if instead of letting a bad choice define us and continue to play the victim, we chose to take a different path? We can choose to learn from a less than desirable outcome and make the choice to do something new and move forward. We tend to think that our circumstances are what drive our happiness or lack thereof. In reality, it is how we choose to react to circumstances and decisions that truly impacts our happiness and
success. How else can you explain those individuals that grow up in dangerous neighborhoods and still choose to follow a different path? They make a commitment to themselves that they want more and that they can have more. Happiness itself is also a choice. Look at the people who live with mental or physical disabilities. There are many of these individuals that choose happiness rather than sadness or despair. There will always be someone whose circumstances are worse than yours. It doesn’t mean it needs to define who you are. Consider taking a look back on the past year. What decisions have you made that have led you to feel happier? Better yet, look at some of the choices you made that had less than desirable outcomes. You have a choice every day on how you are going to feel and how you are going to react. Are you going to embark on the coming months with a positive attitude and the realization that you always have a choice in how you react to things, or are you satisfied with blaming your feelings and emotions on others and on circumstances? Here is to hoping we all enter 2018 having made the choice to be happier by doing the things that keep us feeling that way. “I must do something” always solves more problems than “something must be done.” —Author Unknown

Show ’Em You Love ’Em Do Something Special…Spend Time! I am in a February rut. Every year, I sit down to write this column in February, and the question in my head is: How can I write about LOVE this year? In the past couple of years, I’ve written about accepting others and the difference between love and hate, like and dislike. This year, I want to talk about showing love to others. Brother Dear (BD) told me that he and some friends are planning to take an older friend, Dan, to a special event out of town. They made a similar trip a year ago, and Dan loved it. The guys knew that Dan was disappointed that the timing didn’t work out for his son and grandson to take him, so they planned this excursion. Dan’s a special guy—these friends are special, too. That conversation morphed into one about families and how kids should show their parents, especially as their parents get older, how much they love them by doing something special. Over the years, BD and I both took Mom on excursions. I went with Mom and two of her sisters on a road trip to New England. BD took Mom to family reunions. He made sure she made it to her grandkids’ weddings and graduations. Mom and I went to her little sister’s 90th birthday party. Between us, BD and I made sure she attended every family event to which she was invited… and some to which she wasn’t. We threw parties when she turned 80, and 90, and 100.
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
When Mom was approaching her 96th birthday, she informed us that she wasn’t having a birthday that year. “My sister died on her 96th birthday. I don’t want to die on mine…so I’m not celebrating it,” she declared. We had coincidental non-birthday gatherings every day of her birthday week. The kids stopped to visit because “they were in the neighborhood.” We brought pizza and said, “We were hungry and thought maybe you were, too.” We’d go to lunch and “just happen” to run into other family or friends at the restaurant. Mom knew she was loved. She was Grandma Ag to all of our friends…and to many of our kids’ friends, too. When Dan’s friends take him on these road trips, he knows he’s loved. Every time you do something nice…share a small kindness…for someone else, you show them that you love them. Take Uncle Ron to a concert in the park. Give Aunt Angie a drive in the country on a beautiful spring day. Take a neighbor out to lunch…or just go over and spend time sitting and talking on the porch or patio. Call someone you haven’t talked to for a while. A few moments mean a lot. Sometimes a hug means more. Happy February! This month, take the time to show some love. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Tracey’s Boutique Meeting Women’s Post-Mastectomy Needs By Cheryl Lassota
Tracey Myers knows that women facing life-threatening breast cancer must also cope with self-esteem and body image issues. She witnessed this struggle up close when her mother and sister-in-law were afflicted with the disease. Tracey is the owner of Merle Norman Cosmetics in the Chapel Hills Mall. To help women with cancer deal with these issues, she expanded her shop to include Tracey’s Boutique, which offers mastectomy bras, apparel, and wigs, with an elegant, spacious fitting room. “I want women to feel feminine,” Tracey says. “Many feel like they lose that with cancer. I want to give it back.” Tracey’s Boutique carries stunning choices in lingerie, bras, tops, and swimwear, with hidden pockets to hold breast forms. She has readymade breast forms and also does personal scans to create custom prosthesis. “We see women right after surgery for a recovery camisole that holds drains,” Tracey explains. “Women used to make fanny pack contraptions to hold tubes and drains.” Her comfortable cotton camisole zips for ease of fit and has a pocket for tubing. Client Mari joyfully posted this online: “I found cute camisoles to wear under clothing or by themselves. They give a sense of peace and newly gained confidence. Tracey was compassionate with sizing and ordered other colors. I have happy tears when I think about it.” The shop provides private, personalized fitting assistance for all products. Tracey suggests an hour-long appointment for prosthesis, bra, and apparel fittings, with time to complete any insurance paperwork. Shirley Homer of Pueblo sought out Tracey’s help for her mother, Rose Valdez. “My mother is 92,” Shirley notes. “Tracey had the patience of an angel in helping her find the perfect size and fit!” Tracey’s extensive array of head coverings come in ultra-soft bamboo and Italian silk. Cotton activity caps can be placed under pre-tied scarves or layered with scarves tied in fun ways. It is Tracey’s collection of wigs in varying shades and lengths that catches the eye of customer Liz, who drops by simply seeking a new look. Tracey points out that high-quality, monofilament wigs are a great choice for anyone but are ideal for women with cancer-related hair loss. They are constructed to give the natural look of hair growing from the scalp. Others have lace fronts that sit on the hairline, so women can go without bangs. “For women going through a transition from chemo, synthetic wigs are much better than human hair,” Tracey believes. “Synthetics look and feel amazing, come pre-styled, are easy to maintain, and are less expensive. We get new wigs in all the time and do

special orders.” “Women should come in before they start losing hair and match a wig to their hair color,” Tracey advises. “I call this Owner Tracey Myers their ‘safe wig.’ It’s one they feel good in, that’s most like their style. Then I suggest a more adventurous ‘fun wig’ in a different color or length that would make them feel a little glamorous.” Even a pre-styled synthetic wig may need a little tune-up, Tracey notes. “Everyone’s head shape is different, so wig bangs are a bit longer. We suggest clients take it to a stylist to have it trimmed up to fit their face.” Tracey keeps about 50 wigs in stock and rotates them often. She donates wigs, along with gently used clothing and prostheses, to the St. Mary Corwin Cancer Center in Pueblo, where she does frequent fittings. She also supports the Sisters Hope Annual Celebration of Hope Retreat for breast cancer survivors. Longtime store manager Onda Waller enjoys helping customers with everything the store offers. “I believe in Merle Norman skin care products and have used them since I was 12,” she states. That includes the original three products, which were created by Merle Norman on her stove in 1931 and are still an integral part of the line: Cleansing Cream, Powder Base Foundation, and the hot pink MIRACOL Revitalizing Cream mask. Tracey notes, “Skin texture changes because of chemo, and women may need to add a bit of color because they tend to be more sallow. Our customer service is beyond that available at any other cosmetic counter. Beauty consultants offer makeovers and help women experiencing hair loss with brow makeup. We meet patrons’ needs in a quiet, private area, not out in the open where everyone can see. We’re here to help them brighten their appearance and to help them feel pretty!” As Lisa wrote on Facebook, “I could not have asked for a more compassionate experience during a very emotional and difficult time.” A St. Mary’s graduate, Tracey raised four hockeyplaying sons in Colorado Springs. She opened Merle Norman Cosmetics 28 years ago, adding Tracey’s Boutique two years ago. For an appointment, call Tracey at 719-599-0282 or 720-386-4333. The Love of a Therapy Dog Companionship for Those Who Need It Most By Elizabeth French
Animals can have a profound effect on the physical and mental well-being of people. Dogs, in particular, motivate their companions to be active and get outdoors, which can lead to improvements in strength and social contact and decreases in blood pressure, heart rate, and stress hormones. For many people, engaging with a dog releases the hormones associated with happiness, such as endorphins, dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin. Therapy dogs are specifically trained to be calm, quiet, and docile under any conditions, giving anchor to those who find themselves lost at sea in everyday life. There are important differences between service dogs, emotional support dogs, and therapy dogs. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service dog is “individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability.” This might include guiding a blind person, alerting a deaf person to sound, pressing elevator buttons, retrieving dropped items, or alerting an autistic person to distracting repetitive movements. Service animals, when working, are guaranteed entry into any place that the public can enter. Emotional support animals (ESAs) are pets that provide vital emotional support to owners with mental illnesses like anxiety, depression, or PTSD. These pets have no particular training, but the owner may obtain a letter from her therapist to identify her need for the ESA. Such a letter does not guarantee the pet the federal protections afforded to a service animal, but many municipalities have regulations allowing greater access (check with your local government). Therapy dogs are pets that are trained and certified to provide emotional support and affection to members of the public. Though they provide an invaluable service and may well help people manage conditions like depression or anxiety, they are not considered service animals by the ADA unless they are trained to perform specific tasks to support a person with a disability. There are many types of therapy dogs. A therapeutic visitation dog is a household pet that is brought into facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes, detention facilities, and rehabilitation centers to bring comfort to those living away from home. Disaster relief dogs bring a furry friend to those in need after a traumatic event such as a natural disaster or a mass shooting. Just a short encounter with these loving animals is a reminder that unconditional love still exists during a difficult time. Facility therapy dogs often remain in residence at the nursing homes they serve. These gems may be specially trained to keep patients with memory impairments from getting lost. Animal-assisted therapy dogs are meant to assist in the recuperation of patients after an injury. The dog may assist with common tasks while helping patients regain their strength, helping them prepare to return to caring for their own pets. Reading therapy dogs provide a boost of confidence
to children who struggle with reading. These dogs provide a pair of ears to listen to practicing readers in schools and libraries. Some children feel uncomfortable practicing in front of people and may prefer the non-judgmental audience that a canine companion can provide. Some counselors also work with therapy dogs in their practices; a dog may help a reticent patient open up during a session. A therapy dog must be docile, enjoy the touch of humans, be comfortable in boisterous and stressful environments, and not shed excessively. Some breeds are quicker to learn and more likely to have a calm demeanor. The best small breeds for therapy, according to CompanionAnimals.org, are the Chihuahua, corgi, French bulldog, pug, King Charles spaniel, dachshund, bichon frise, beagle, Yorkie, and Pomeranian. If a larger breed is desired, they recommend a golden retriever, Labrador retriever, German shepherd, greyhound, rottweiler, Saint Bernard, poodle, Great Dane, mastiff, or Bernese mountain dog. With training and dedication, your pet could become a therapy dog. To be certified, the dog must pass the American Kennel Club’s test, which evaluates the skill sets needed by these animals—everything from simple sitting to remaining calm in the face of multiple distractions. Keep in mind that, according to Therapy Dogs International, “A therapy dog is born, not made. Yes, one can teach a dog mannerly behavior, but one cannot change a dog’s inherent temperament.” Before deciding to train your dog for therapy work, ask yourself if your dog is truly a good candidate. Once you’ve decided to put your pet through the training and testing process, it can take upwards of six months to prepare you and your dog for evaluation. If you believe you could benefit from the companionship of a therapy dog, talk to your doctor or therapist about your needs. The unconditional love of these rare dogs can mean the world to those going through a period of grief, stress, or loneliness. Healthy State of Mind Taking Care of Your Mental Health
By Ashley Anderson
The millions of Americans living with mental illness can feel miserable—trapped or controlled by their own mind or feelings. It can affect every facet of life, from personal relationships to professional success to physical health. Although the symptoms of mental illness may be less visible than those of physical illness, mental health should be taken very seriously. Mental illness varies widely. Some of the more common conditions include anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), drug and alcohol addiction, and bipolar disorder. Symptoms vary by condition, but there is a lot of overlap. Anxiety can include overwhelming fear, worry, or guilt. With OCD, worrisome thoughts lead to compulsive behaviors like excessive cleaning or unreasonably strict religious activity. Clinical depression often presents as feelings of extreme sadness, fatigue, or lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities. Seasonal affective disorder is a form of depression that occurs during the colder, darker months. Bipolar disorder can look (and feel) like the patient is on a roller coaster between depressive and manic behavior. PTSD generally results from a significant trauma and is common in people who have lived or served in combat zones. Their symptoms, which can include strong feelings of guilt, isolation, irritability, or always being “on guard,” are often triggered by sounds, sights,
or smells that bring to mind the traumatic event. Drug and alcohol addiction is recognizable by the person’s inability to stop using the substances in question. Mental illness can also result in associated physical distress, including headaches, stomach pain, or other body aches. In addition, untreated mental illness can and does lead to destructive behavior, self-inflicted harm, and even suicide. It’s important to note that stress, sadness, anxiety, and other strong emotions are a natural part of life. When these feelings persist for weeks and start interfering with work, relationships, or school, it’s time to call your doctor. Extreme changes in mood, energy, or behavior can also be signs of mental illness. In particular: If you or someone you know shows any signs of suicidal thoughts, call emergency health services immediately. Mental illness has many causes and may arise at any stage in life. In some cases, mental illness is an inherited trait; those with a family history of mental illness are more likely to experience mental illness of their own. Environmental factors, like exposure to drugs before birth, are another big contributor to mental health problems.

Environmental factors that occur later in life, such as a traumatic experience, can also impact a person’s mental health. There is no way to explicitly prevent mental illness. However, like many chronic conditions, it can often be managed with the help of a specialist, and your quality of life may be vastly improved with treatment. Your physician may refer you to a mental health specialist for specialized care. Psychiatrists provide therapy and are licensed to prescribe medication. Some common medications used to treat mental illness include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), sedatives, and antipsychotics. There are many medicines to choose from; you might need to try a few different ones before you and your doctor find the one that works best for you. Depending on the severity of the illness, hospitalization or a clinical care facility may be needed to ensure proper and consistent treatment. Psychologists provide various types of therapy, including “talk therapy,” hypnosis, and behavioral modification strategies, but they cannot prescribe medication. The emotional support of therapy may be very helpful, either one-on-one or in a group setting. Hypnosis may help with behavior modification and addiction. Some less traditional methods of treatment are also available. NeuroStar TMS therapy is a treatment for depression that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate underactive areas of the brain. Patients whose depression is due to seasonal affective disorder may benefit from light therapy, in which they are exposed to artificial light that mimics natural daylight and is believed to affect the brain chemicals that influence mood and sleep. Biofeedback is also emerging as a potential treatment for mental illness. Through carefully placed sensors and exposure/response practice, patients may be able to learn to control their physiological responses to certain triggers. There are also some changes you can make to your daily life to improve your mental health. Physical exercise is known to release endorphins, which can improve mood. Dietary changes can also help. Therapy animals have helped many people with mental illness; they can be utilized during therapy sessions or by having one at home. Mental illness can be debilitating, but it is almost always treatable. Talk to your doctor. Don’t put it off—just think of how much better your life could be with proper treatment! New Year, New Yard The Latest in Landscaping
By Anne Yankus
Warm weather is just around the corner, making now the perfect time to start thinking about your springtime landscaping! Popular new trends include maximizing small spaces by using multipurpose features and combination container accents, creating bold alfresco dining areas, and prioritizing craftsmanship with standing structures. Let’s start by discussing the many things to plant in the yard. Trees can serve many purposes in landscaping, but the most obvious two would have to be providing shade and decoration. Shade trees are great for cooling your house in the summertime and slashing that high electric bill. Some examples of popular, fast-growing shade trees would be the northern red oak, the freeman maple, the Japanese zelkova, and the tulip tree. Evergreen trees provide year-round foliage to shelter your home’s exterior and can be planted relatively close to your house. Decorative, blossoming trees are also popular and can make a beautiful addition to your yard. Some popular springtime bloomers are the Leonard Messel magnolia, the Venus dogwood, the Oklahoma redbud, and the double flowering plum. Just like everything else in life, don’t choose a tree just by how it looks. Tree diseases are a common malady and can cost you both money and growing time. Before deciding which trees to plant, be sure to check out how disease-resistant they are.
Some examples of hardy trees that thrive in the Midwest include crab apples (flowers in spring), serviceberry (flowers in spring and bright foliage in fall), black gum (great for shade), and the northern red oak. Shade and flowers are nice, but what if you really just want to keep your neighbors from spying on everything you do? That’s where privacy shrubs come in. Many types of trees are good for building a privacy hedge. Depending on which variety you choose, they can do everything from reducing noise and snow to screening your yard from passersby year-round. Evergreens are a popular choice for this purpose; they come in tall (American and green giant arborvitae) and short (emerald and nigra arborvitae) varieties. If you’re more of a deciduous shrub fan, the rose of Sharon and north privet are also popular varieties for hedges. Now, if you’re still thinking, “new landscaping sounds nice, but my yard is fine as it is,” think again. Landscaping is actually one of the best investments you can make on your house. A well-designed and well-maintained landscape can add up to 20

percent more value to your home. If you ever plan to sell, landscaping is definitely a must (remember, landscaping can take years to mature, so it’s good to get started early). According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, a good rule of thumb is to invest at least 10 percent of your home’s value into landscaping. Even if you prefer to plant your own annuals and mow your own lawn, it’s a great idea to seek professional help (such as a landscape architect or designer) when designing and implementing your landscaping. Landscape architects are great for people who want a change in the yard but aren’t quite sure what they want to do. Landscape architects are also great resources for large, custom projects, like the newly popular crafted structures and alfresco areas. They can draw up plans and obtain any building permits you might need. If you’ve already got a solid idea of what you want, a landscape designer may be a better fit. Landscape designers typically have horticultural backgrounds and can draw up a blueprint to help you place all the elements you want in the space you have. They are experts in choosing plants and can help you design your garden around your needs, including spaces for kids or pets to play or outdoor eating areas. Don’t forget planting beds! Garden beds require more forethought than you may assume. There are many priorities to consider. How much maintenance are you willing to do? Are you hoping to attract birds and butterflies, or would you rather focus on plants that will not bring neighborhood wildlife into your yard? Which plants are native to your area? Where will the garden be placed (the level of shade and soil drainage help determine which plants will thrive)? For ideas, you can check out garden plans online. Once you have some idea of what you want, it’s time to call the landscape designer to help you turn your plan into a reality. Landscaping isn’t something to hammer out as a weekend warrior. Take the time now to plan out what you want, hire the professionals you need, and get the job done right! Positive Perspective
Are You Taking Life Way Too Seriously? Laughter is the Answer! I’ve concluded that many of us—myself included—are taking life way too seriously. We walk around with frowns on our faces, hurrying to reach our next appointment or get our next task accomplished. We have an opinion about everything—whether it is any of our business or not. We find ourselves getting into political “discussions” (i.e., arguments) and religious “conversations” (i.e., arguments.) How did this happen? Just a short while ago, we were focused on what we appreciated in life, how many blessings we had, how happy we were! Well, we could blame the media. (Blame always feels better than guilt!) We could blame our bosses. We could blame our spouses. “If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn’t sit for a month.” —Unknown Oh, so maybe we need to take responsibility and kick ourselves in the pants? The problem with this approach is that the last thing we need right now is to beat up on ourselves. After all, we wouldn’t kick another human being when they were down, would we? Why do we think it’s okay to beat up on ourselves? But what do we do? If we don’t get ourselves out of this funk, we may actually go crazy! “If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane.” —Jimmy Buffett
By Janet Van deWalle
Ah, the magic potion—laughter! Why do we so often forget this remedy? Whenever I find myself taking life way too seriously, I look back over the previous several weeks and realize that there has been very little laughter happening. I’ve been rushing, pushing, arguing—but hardly a smile or a giggle in the midst! Before I know what has happened, I’ve lost my sense of humor and then everything goes to heck! “Laughter gives us distance. It allows us to step back from an event, deal with it and then move on.” —Bob Newhart Being able to let go and laugh gives us the bridge to getting to where we want to be—that place that we were, not so very long ago. Laughter is the path that allows us to let go of our exaggerated sense of self importance—so we don’t have to take life so seriously. Laughter is the answer! Still not convinced? I’ll end with this: “We would like to leave you with this very clear knowing that we hold: You are just a few laughs away from letting a whole lot of good stuff in. You are just a few kisses away from letting a whole lot of good stuff in. You are just a little bit of relief away from letting a whole lot of good stuff in.” —Abraham/Hicks
