At first it was a stab in the dark; would this form of exposure work or would I need to look for another venue to get my services noticed? I have been very pleased with the quality of the magazine, the staff I have worked with, and most of all the quality of prospects who have become wonderful clients. I wholeheartedly recommend advertising in this publication.” —Pauli Hubbard, CFP with Creative Financial Services, Inc.

Editor’s Notes

A Month of Perfect Love February is a busy month! In addition to Valentine’s Day, we’ve got National Wear Red Day, World Cancer Day, Presidents Day, Hunt Down Rogue Christmas Tree Remnants Day…wait, is that last one only at my house? Let’s take a closer look at these important February dates, on which we recognize people who have worked to help improve our way of life. The first Friday in February (February 1 this year) is National Wear Red Day. On this day, we are encouraged to wear red to raise awareness of heart disease in women. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, heart disease is the number-one killer of women in the United States. World Cancer Day (February 4) is a day when we are called to action against cancer. For common cancers, early diagnosis improves your chances of survival by three times. Schedule a check-up! I got my chest x-ray last week and it took no time at all. They even got the good results back to me the next day. Next up is the mammo. Presidents Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February (the 18th this year). I include this in the list because of the difference our founding fathers made for this country. Many sacrificed their way of life and even their own lives to ensure our safety, health, and freedom as a nation. Many more people are still in the trenches as we speak, doing just that. In my opinion, these holidays of awareness and sacrifice exemplify Perfect Love. When we’re in the midst of fighting the good fight, we all have other things going on in our lives. For instance, George Washington had a high-maintenance mother with a flair for the dramatic. When he rode home to tell her he had been elected the first President of the United States, her response was, “I’m dying. You will never see me again. Go do your job that’s more important.” I envision her placing the back of her hand on her forehead as she sneaks a peek at her son for his response. His response was, “Well, when I get settled in New York, I’ll come back and—” She interrupted him, so we will never know what he planned to do. In the midst of wars…some won, some lost… the President learned that his mother had written to the House of Delegates, asking for money. During the French war, he received a letter from her, asking for another servant…and for butter. He displayed his Perfect Love for her by responding respectfully and declining her requests. The trenches are always occupied by a lot of brave people—not necessarily unafraid, but brave and selfless. To those of you who fight at a desk or in the field to better our world, thank you for your Perfect Love.

It’s Almost Spring…It’s Almost Spring! New Fashion Is Just Around the Corner

By Holly Bell

The new year always brings thoughts of new beginnings. Maybe this is your year to start a new business or set new goals for your existing one. Maybe this is your year for self-improvement—physically, mentally, or both. No matter what you’re planning for yourself this year, you know that you feel your best when you look your best. As you get started on the year’s goals, don’t forget to clean out your closet and update your wardrobe to be your best self! One of the most important things we can do to “spring up” our wardrobes is to add cheerful color. The Pantone Color Institute, which predicts upcoming colors for fashion and home goods, predicts that 2019 will be the year of “living coral.” Coral has long been known in fashion circles as a universal color that looks good with every skin and hair tone. Pantone describes it as “buoyant, vibrant, and effervescent.” We should expect to see a lot of coral in both home goods and fashion, as it is predicted to dominate the design industry over the next year. Surprisingly (and conveniently), it mixes well with pretty much everything—coral and blue, coral and gray, even coral and pink! Use your imagination to come up with some interesting and clever ways to work coral into your existing wardrobe. The trends coming this year fall into three general categories. Bazaar Magazine calls the first one “all dolled up.” Ruffles, layers, and frills will float around us on dresses, tops, and skirts, letting the girly girl in each of us come out of hiding. Feathers and flowers will also embellish these fanciful concoctions. Marabou will trim tops, jackets, and hemlines, bringing hints of 1950s glamour. The more practical and conservative woman in us will enjoy the year’s “down to earth” neutrals, in classic earth tones of tan, cream, and khaki. Lighter fabrics and precise tailoring will grace the sharp-looking sophisticate this season. These classics can be worn from head to toe, either in a matching look or by mixing it up, wearing several earthy neutrals together for an elegant look.

Call Today! 719-499-9332 1255 Lake Plaza Dr. • Suite 265 Colorado Springs, CO 80906 On the opposite end of the spectrum will be the “bohemian.” Fringe, fishnet, layering, and wild mod patterns will let the hippie in us out for a spin. Get ready for a summer of tie-dyed shirts worn with acid-washed jeans. Another fun throwback will be the scarf print. Remember the silky and colorful designer scarf prints of the 1980s? They look fresh again this spring and fit well with the bohemian vibe. The print also serves as a great counterpoint to the neutral tailored scene. Although the color of the year will be coral, there will also be a brighter side to the color palette. Lemon or marigold yellow will be the shade of choice for many fashionistas this spring. We are sure to feel sunny when we’re wearing this mood-brightening color! Polka dots will also make a cheerful addition to our wardrobes this spring. We’ll see the classic black and white polka dot, but also some twists on the theme. Done in very artistic and creative ways, new ideas will bring freshness to the pattern. As far as casual sportswear goes, the big news is the biker short. We haven’t seen that for many a season, but it recently showed up on the runway, worn creatively for sport activities and mixing in with jackets and tops in a dressier way. The biker short was even worn with a suit jacket for the ultimate juxtaposition. Ladies will not give up on their yoga pants and activewear for comfort and ease. We just love the multi-functionality! Trends in yoga wear will be matching tops and bottoms. Think bold colors like red, black, blue, and green. For texture, velour will make an appearance in joggers and sports bras. This fashion trend is stylish and fun. Top it off with a velour pullover for the ultimate in soft comfort. Expect accessories to be bold and beautiful for the 2019 fashion scene. Dainty necklaces and classic hoops will no longer rule the runway—the statement necklace is back in a big way. Jewelry this spring will be dripping with maximalism, completely reversing the tiny trend. Rhinestones, crystals, chains, stars, coins, and oversized everything in jewelry will be a fun change. As you can tell, this spring will bring a bright, fun take on fashion. There will be something for every woman (and every different type of woman inside of each of us!). Just keep saying this to yourself: It’s almost spring…it’s almost spring…it’s almost spring! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE More information at www.cartise.com

Monument Pediatrics Compassion Is the Key to Excellence By William J. Dagendesh

Parents who are seeking affordable, personable, and highquality health care for their children are discovering the benefits of Monument Pediatrics. Located at 17230 Jackson Creek Parkway, in Suite 260, Monument Pediatrics provides excellent quality medical care for children from birth to age 18 years. The professionals at Monument Pediatrics strive every day to help their patients reach their full potential. By working closely with their patients’ parents, Monument Pediatrics tailors and coordinates specialized care of complex medical problems to help restore and maintain children’s health and emotional well-being. Physicians, patients, and families agree that the compassionate, family-oriented atmosphere at Monument Pediatrics is what sets them apart from other local pediatric facilities. “We’re not a huge clinic, so we communicate better with clients,” explains Lori Wertheimer, MD. “They feel a personal connection with us.” The brainchild of Dr. Wertheimer and Dr. Helen Danahey, Monument Pediatrics was created in 2001 as a part of the Mountain View Medical Group to accommodate Monument’s growing community and growing need for pediatric care. Today, Dr. Wertheimer is part of a pediatrics team dedicated to providing excellent family health care. “Our business is providing the best possible health care to families,” she declares. Her colleagues, Dr. Michael Carpenter and Dr. Kathleen Foote, agree that families are their top priority and that compassion is key to the services they provide. Dr. Foote agrees that Monument Pediatrics’ smaller size provides clients with a more personable, one-onone connection with physicians and staff. “We see a lot of same-day appointments and accommodate clients as best we can, which is why people feel close to us,” she says. Dr. Carpenter adds, “We’re small enough that even the kids know the doctors and staff by name.” Monument Pediatrics’ positive reputation and patient roster are growing chiefly by word of mouth, Dr. Wertheimer says. “It took a while for people to know who we are, and word-of-mouth certainly helped it along.” Dr. Carpenter adds, “Although we treat Colorado Springs residents, we are chiefly a Monument community, so distance plays a big factor in our clientele.” Dr. Foote has two children herself, so she appreciates easy access to quality pediatric care. “As a pediatrician and a mom, I know the importance of health care for kids,” she says. “That’s why I enjoy being a pediatrician here.” Practice manager Melanie Kinlaw, CMM, agrees. “As it says on a banner in our lobby, we

Lori Wertheimer, MD; don’t make appointments—we make relationships,” Kathleen Foote, MD; she says. Practice Manager Julie Burtwistle is thankful for that relationship. Melanie Kinlaw, CMM, Julie’s 15-year-old daughter, Olivia, has a and Michael neurodegenerative disease that began robbing her of Carpenter, MD brain cells, mobility, and vision by age 8. The treatment and compassion Olivia receives at Monument Pediatrics make a big difference in Olivia’s life, Julie says. “The doctors’ compassion sets them apart from other facilities.” Suzanne Donehower also appreciates the care at Monument Pediatrics. In 2006, her daughter, Sarah, was diagnosed with a disease that is linked to autism, intellectual disabilities, poor muscle tone, seizures, and slower physical developments. “Sarah is non-verbal and can’t communicate her pain. However, the doctors understand, and they treat Sarah as best they can,” Suzanne explains. “It also stands out that they processed the paperwork submitted to Medicaid—this was a big relief.” Dr. Foote shares the story of a child who learned to hear through a bone-anchored hearing device designed for people with various hearing losses who are unable to wear “in the ear” or “behind the ear” hearing aids. “To see a kid with that technology be socially integrated is just wonderful,” Dr. Foote says. Knowing that they make a difference in families’ lives is the doctors’ greatest reward, shares Dr. Wertheimer. “It’s rewarding to see kids I once cared for bring their children here for treatment,” she says. Dr. Carpenter adds, “Getting to know people on a personal basis is what Monument Pediatrics is all about.” The physicians at Monument Pediatrics are boardcertified in pediatrics, treat about 7,800 patients annually, Melanie says. “There is a lot of positive energy here,” she concludes. “People feel that energy the moment they enter the office.” If you live in the Monument or greater Colorado Springs area and are looking for personable, compassionate, and expert care for your children’s health, consider Monument Pediatrics. For more information, you can visit mvmg.com/content/ monument-pediatrics or call 719-488-6998. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and by appointment only on Saturday mornings. WE

Take Care of Your Furry Friends The Advantages of Professional Grooming By Brie Christensen

Americans love having pets, and more of us are becoming pet owners all the time. According to a recent survey of American households conducted by the American Pet Products Association, approximately 47 million households own cats and roughly 60 million households own dogs. As more people take on the joy and responsibility of pet ownership, it’s become even more evident how vital it is for individuals to understand the vast benefits that professional pet grooming offers to both cats and dogs. While pet owners might think they can save money by accomplishing the task on their own, home grooming doesn’t always go well—pets sometimes end up needing a professional groomer to fix the damage from a disastrous home grooming session. Starting with professional grooming can save owners a lot of hassles, including time, energy, and stress. Routine visits to the same groomer can also bring the advantage of a regular caretaker for pets—regular groomers can sometimes catch physical concerns that owners don’t know to look for and can refer pets for treatment before the condition gets worse. How do you find a great groomer? Experts say it’s important to first seek referrals from veterinarians or other pet owners and to research different groomers and the services they offer. It’s important for pet owners to explore their options in order to discover the right route for their individual animal. Some professionals even specialize in grooming select breeds of pets! Dog grooming should typically be done monthly. More frequent grooming may be needed for specific breeds or for puppies or animals that are still becoming familiar with the process. The American Kennel Club notes that dog groomers are trained professionals who have all of the necessary tools, shampoos, and experience to get the task done. Most dog groomers start by brushing, bathing, and then drying the animal. Once the pet is dried, professionals trim, clip, or shave the dog’s fur, as requested by the owners. They also clean the dog’s ears and check for signs of infection during the visit. Trimming nails and brushing teeth are also generally offered. Cats spend a lot of time grooming themselves, and this convinces many cat owners that cats can handle their own grooming needs. This is not necessarily true. Professional grooming is still needed for cats to achieve proper health and hygiene—in fact, experts say that regularly scheduled cat grooming is just as important as regularly scheduled dog grooming. Regular sessions allow professionals to check for parasites, lumps, and other symptoms or concerns that owners might overlook, especially if cats are often left to their own devices when it comes to grooming. Much like professional dog grooming, a cat grooming visit can involve bathing, trimming, clipping, and even tooth cleaning. After a professional grooming visit,

owners can expect cats to have fewer hairballs, less matting of the fur, and a generally fresher smell. While regular professional grooming is recommended, owners are also directed to care for their dogs and cats in between appointments by brushing their teeth and bathing them when needed. Pet owners who live in areas of the country with cold winters need to address some special considerations when having their pets professionally groomed during the winter months. After all, one purpose of an animal’s fur is to keep the animal warm—taking too much fur off during grooming can leave an animal unnecessarily vulnerable to the cold. However, leaving too much fur on pets may lead to matting or other issues. Owners should check with their pet’s veterinarian to find out what level of grooming will work best for each individual animal. In recent years, the demand for mobile pet grooming has increased. Many people like the idea of groomers coming to them, instead of having to drop pets off at a traditional grooming salon and then pick them up later in the day. Along with convenience, mobile grooming can provide a more personal touch, while offering a calmer experience than pets might get at a grooming station inside a large facility. In fact, some groomers are even starting to offer house calls. In-home grooming has become increasingly popular recently, as many customers like to watch or stay nearby during their furry friend’s appointment. The familiar, comfortable environment may lead to ease of mind for pets, too. In the end, whether owners choose to visit a brick and mortar shop or have a professional come to them, owners who choose professional pet grooming are making a wise decision and putting their animal’s health first. A Woman’s Work

Our Shortest Month 28 Days of Groundhogs and Sweethearts By Sharon Knierim

February may be the shortest month of the year, but it holds the opportunity for much activity and fun. When we were children (a long time ago), elementary school art classes featured the making of presidential profiles. Every year, we would cut out stylized profiles of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. These were always proudly mounted on bulletin boards around the room. We were not aware that there had been lots of other presidents until we advanced a few years in our education. Groundhog Day was another big occasion during the month of February. Would Phil the groundhog see his shadow, or would he be too shy or lazy to emerge from his den? We didn’t participate in any classroom gambling, but we all had a chance to speculate on whether or not we would see this furry little forecaster. The teacher would draw a line down the middle of the blackboard before giving each student the opportunity to make a prediction. Of course, there was no science to this, but at least we had a fifty-fifty chance. The losers in this contest were responsible for keeping the classroom sparkling clean for the next week. Come to think of it, maybe there was some classroom gambling, after all. February was the zenith of all things love as we celebrated St. Valentine’s Day. As amateur artists, everyone drew or fashioned hearts and Cupids carrying love arrows aimed at the hearts of those about to be smitten. Hearts were cut out of red construction paper and decorated with glitter or doilies. Some of them were festooned with little bits of aluminum foil. There was always a classroom party for Valentine’s Day. We made our own valentine boxes from emptied oatmeal boxes, shoeboxes, or any container no longer being used. As Valentine’s Day approached, children would drop their cards into their classmates’ boxes. These cards would be viewed during the party, as we all looked for significant clues from secret admirers. We must have been a very romantic young generation! Treats were always served at these parties, and everyone had a good time. Every four years, on February 29th, we would celebrate Sadie Hawkins Day, on which the girls asked the boys to a dance or party. A few overenthusiastic girls proposed marriage, which was a bit premature for seven and eight years old. Naturally, they were turned down, but I think the boys reveled in the opportunity to learn which of their female classmates were looking in their direction. Some of us girls were too shy to proclaim our admiration for any of the boys in the class; we remained silent in our devotion to them. Of course, we were all cured of the love bug by March 1st (the next day, that is), and everything was back to business as usual. As adults, we still acknowledge these important February events. We still take time to celebrate

14

Presidents Day, but now we acknowledge these leaders with sales of all kinds and paid days off. Government offices lock their doors, and no business is conducted in them. Though we are not usually cutting out presidential profiles, we do recognize these men as important persons who made our country strong. We still take a break to see what the groundhog is doing on February 2nd. It’s a tough job, predicting how long winter will last before spring breaks through, but he does his best. He’s always in the spotlight as newscasters make a big fuss over him, and we generally have a good time with this tradition. Of course, the blockbuster for the month of February is Valentine’s Day, for children and adults alike. Once again, there is Cupid with those arrows and lots of hearts and flowers. For some folks, this is one of those days filled with stress and pressure…especially for those gentlemen who did not plan ahead. A dozen roses is a solid bet, but what color should they be? Red might be too strong, but pink roses might not give the full impact of his feelings. It’s a tough decision, and you have to make sure to get it just right. How about a big box of candy? Many women try to convince their man that they don’t want all the extra calories from that huge heart-shaped box of chocolates, but I have yet to meet a woman who turned down a box of chocolates or truffles on Valentine’s Day. For couples at more serious stages of a relationship, jewelry (and the long-term commitment it suggests) might be a better bet. No matter what Cupid brings you this year, let me wish you a very happy Valentine’s Day, and a very happy February! WE

Dreaming of Your Dream Home? Make It a Reality! By Kylie Gumpert

Home. It’s where you spend quality time with friends and family and where you relax after a long day. It’s a space you want to love to be in! There are a lot of homes out there, and it’s smart to shop around. The truth is, not all of us can find an existing home that fits all of our needs and is perfect for our family. Sometimes, we just need to build it ourselves—along with a great team of professionals, that is! Let’s review the advantages of building a custom home and how to plan for it. With a custom home, you have control over just about everything, including defining structural features, determining the size and number of rooms, choosing special features such as a pool or theater, and promoting energy efficiency and “green” features such as rainwater capture. The only restrictions you have, really, are your budget, your time frame, and your building code or zoning limitations. Your architect and general contractors will be your guides as you learn more than you thought possible about all that goes into constructing a residence. It’s true that building a custom home is not the least expensive way to find housing. According to Home Advisor, the average custom home price tag is between $100 and $400 per square foot. Even so, a custom home doesn’t have to be a mansion! You can go custom and keep your space cozy, too, which will save money and time. Speaking of time, it can take up to six months to design the property and obtain the correct building permits, and building can take up to a year. Because building your dream home is usually going to take more time and money than buying an existing home, you want to be sure you’re ready for this commitment as well as all of the research you’ll need to do. This is the general list of steps: determine your budget, set a timeline, purchase land, make a list of features you need and want, hire an architect, hire a general contractor, hire other professionals that your general contractor didn’t handle, monitor the process, and—finally—move in! First things first: You need to determine your budget. Meeting with a financial advisor can help you figure out what kind of loans you qualify for, what kind of mortgage you want, how long it will take to pay off your new home, and if you’re comfortable with that timeline. You’ll also need to build in a contingency budget, just in case there’s an accident or the building of your home is held up in any way. Building and planning will take around 16 months or more, so don’t plan a time frame earlier than that. You do want to consider any upcoming family changes, such as having a new baby on the way or needing to be out of your current home at a certain time. The next task is exciting—choosing and purchasing your piece of land! Something to seriously consider, especially if you aren’t familiar with zoning laws, is having an architect or contractor help you decide which

16

plot is right for you. This will help ensure that you can build what you want to build on the plot you choose to purchase. Once you find a plot you’re interested in and have confirmed that it’s zoned for the kind of residence you want to build, you still need to take some other things into consideration. If it’s in a historic district, that may limit how your home can look and the materials you can use. That’s not necessarily a problem, but it’s important to be aware of any limitations in advance. You also want to look at whether the land is sloped or flat (sloped will cost more to flatten), the direction it faces, and how close the surrounding homes are, as all of these things will impact your plan. Now comes the fun part—deciding what you want your custom home to look like! Start by laying out some must-haves for design, layout, and features. Home Builder Digest suggests making a list of “needs,” “wants,” “dreams,” and “don’t wants” to get you started. You should come up with backup plans (in case something won’t work) and put together images of styles or designs that you like and that you don’t like. Think about how many rooms you want, the layout, preferred kitchen features, preferred bathroom amenities, and how important outdoor spaces are to your lifestyle. From here, think about the materials you prefer for flooring, the kind of lighting you’d like to have (including natural light from windows and skylights), and what kind of siding and roofing you prefer. Think about who will be using the space and how. Will stairs be problematic (now or in the future)? Custom cabinetry is very popular, with lots of library spaces and built-in shelving for storage and display. What about technology, such as speakers throughout your home?

www.womensedition.com

Do you want other “smart” devices that can control lighting, the thermostat, or other electronics? Hiring an interior designer can help you sort out which of the trending features you want in your home. Some current style trends, according to HGTV, include richer colors like blue or sage in the kitchen, along with copper or rose gold appliances and concrete or granite sinks and counters. In fact, bolder colors are trending throughout the house, such as jeweltoned tile, furniture, and wall colors. Open dining plans, as well as imaginative reuse or repurposing of items in a fun way, are also on the list. Better Homes and Gardens shares that sustainability, such as reusing materials and reclaiming wood, is becoming more of a priority for homeowners. “Green” design utilizes natural materials and the positioning of the windows to naturally retain heat or keep your home cool, which increases efficiency and saves on energy costs. Homeowners are also loading up on electronics, speakers, and screens for entertainment spaces. Indoor-outdoor spaces that can be used year-round, such as sunrooms, are popular. The kitchen is becoming more and more of a central hub, so that’s important to consider, if it makes sense for your family’s needs. If there’s room in your budget, you might consider hiring a kitchen or bathroom designer, as these spaces are becoming increasingly important for connection and rejuvenation. If gardens and an outdoor living space are must-haves, you probably also want to consult a landscape architect, who can help you visualize what’s possible with your space. Once you have some solid ideas about what you want and don’t want, it’s time to select the professionals who can make it

happen. When you’re building your team, it’s important to find people who are right for the job and who understand your needs. Ask for referrals from friends and family or find out which architect built a house you really love. Look for membership in the American Institute of Architects, which holds members to certain ethical standards. Be sure to review an architect’s previous work and pricing to see how those things fit with your style and your budget. Preferably, an architect will be able to offer 3-D renderings of your build, so you can better visualize it before construction begins. When the design process is underway with your architect, it’s time to find a general contractor. Many times, architects can suggest contractors they’ve worked with in the past, but you should also seek other referrals and do your own research. Talk to a contractor’s previous clients and get background on how their projects went. Ask contractors about their subcontractors—have they worked with them for a long time? You’re best off with subcontractors who have a proven track record for delivering good work on time. Monitoring the build is also paramount. Make sure that you have copies of your contractor’s insurance for your records. Your contractor will make sure that the correct permits are pulled, but you should request copies of those, too. Put inspection dates in your calendar and follow up so you know that they have taken place. If the existing homes you’re touring aren’t meeting your needs, consider a custom-built home! With the right team in place, you and your family could be living in your dream home next year! Kitchen Remodeling Done Right Your Blueprint for Success

By Robyn V. Powell

In recent years, the kitchen has evolved from a single-purpose room, designed specifically for food preparation, to the multi-purpose hub of the home, where people meet to socialize, do homework, and, of course, cook. If your kitchen was built prior to this era, remodeling can be an exciting way to enhance your lifestyle and add value to your home, with an average return on investment of between 60 and 70 percent. Before you begin knocking down walls, however, it’s important to recognize that a kitchen is one of the most complicated remodeling jobs you can do and that living through a remodel can be disruptive and stressful. If you’re ready to make your kitchen remodeling job a reality, check out these tips to help you build the kitchen of your dreams. A well-designed kitchen should last 20 years, so experts recommend choosing a layout that works for you and your family. Consider efficiency, function, style, and longevity. One major way to keep costs down is to keep your current floor plan. Taking down walls, moving gas lines, and relocating plumbing lines and electrical connections will quickly erode your budget. If the current layout works for you, keep it! Innovative shelving can make more space in a small kitchen. Equip blind corners with double sliding shelves, where one set of shelves slides out and over to allow a second set of shelves tucked in the corner to slide forward. Another clever option is to install

two height-adjustable, kidney-shaped shelves that snake out and to the side in one fluid motion, eliminating the need to reach inside for items tucked in the rear. Cabinets make up the biggest slice of the remodel expenditure, so choose a style you love, invest in premium glides and hinges, and select attractive hardware. Choose a manufacturer that offers your preferred door style and finish as a standard option and not as an upgrade. If your cabinets are still solid and just need a fresh look, consider refacing. Refacing involves removing and replacing cabinet doors and drawer fronts and veneering the cabinet boxes. It’s much quicker and less expensive than replacing. Cabinet trends for 2019 forecast mixing things up. Subtle layering of colors like white and gray create nuanced visual interest. While the all-white kitchen remains a classic choice, pairing it with dark hardwood floors beautifully grounds all that white ›››

and enhances the cozy factor. Natural and whitewashed wood cabinets reflect a return to simplicity. Open shelving remains popular, allowing you to showcase your beautiful kitchenware and heirloom pieces. The downside is that exposed dishes collect dust, so make sure you don’t mind having to do a quick rinse prior to use. From induction cooktops to state-ofthe-art wine fridges, showy appliances are difficult to resist. Before investing in these handsomely styled showpieces, it’s wise to carefully consider your needs and weigh the pros and cons. For example, a professionalgrade range may go from simmer to sear in seconds and be built to last 20 years, but it also carries a hefty sticker price, requires a special vent hood, and can weigh over 900 pounds, requiring additional under-floor support. Opting for quality appliances that can be upgraded later, if you’re so inclined, and investing in fixed items like quality countertops makes better sense. Be sure to sure to choose your appliances first so you can build the design around the dimensions of the appliances you want. Granite and marble, with their beautiful natural veining, remain popular countertop choices, but engineered stone is becoming the preferred choice among many homeowners. Quartz offers an alternative to natural stone by offering a quarried look minus the veining. These rock-hard slabs of quartz never need to be sealed and provide a zeromaintenance and zero-worry surface. Beautiful lighting is the finishing touch to highlight a new kitchen. Choose from the latest LED recessed and task lighting for functionality and create a sparkling focal point with a pair of over-the-island pendants. Lighting stores are excellent resources with knowledgeable staff members who can guide you in making the right selections. No matter what your new kitchen will look like, assembling the right team of professionals is the best way to ensure a proper and timely installation. It takes a team with the right experience and skill to create and implement a design that works with your space and goals and stays within your budget. Professional kitchen designers and general contractors have the knowledge and expertise to make installation as seamless as possible. Keeping the stress levels that come with living through a kitchen remodel to a minimum allows you to relax and enjoy the process of creating your dream kitchen. Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy Illuminating Character-Building Traits By Frances Diana Hayden

Sandy Chandler, the owner and CEO of Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy, cherishes her grandmothers, both of whom were formidable businesswomen and inspiring role models in her young life. One of them reared nine children, opened her own real estate firm, and became president of the Southern California Board of Realtors. The other one saved enough money to establish her own dress shop by working in a five-and-dime store. Sandy’s calling, she says, is “to serve others, particularly young people. If you train young students to the highest level of their ability, teach integrity in the art of hairdressing, and teach professionalism through accountability, it is a blessing.” Sandy channeled the tenacity of her grandmothers to create a thriving family partnership within the beauty industry. Eventually, she opened Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy in Colorado Springs, but her path didn’t start there. Sandy reminisces about her professional journey, which began in 1973. Fresh out of beauty school, Sandy opened a home shop with the support of her husband, Bob. “I wanted to be Mrs. Cleaver—to run the shop, run the house, and care for our two children, Robert and Deb,” she says. There was a three-year hiatus when Bob was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. When they returned to Colorado Springs, they had two more children in tow, Barbara and Steve, who ultimately joined the beauty business. By this time, Sandy wanted to open a salon outside of her home, so she started looking for a space. She found the Security Beauty Shop in Fountain Valley. While Bob was working on an engineering degree, Sandy enlisted the help of their children to clean and paint the space as they turned it from a five-station to a 10-station salon. In 1992, a hairdressing school located in the same shopping center closed its doors. Sandy exclaimed to Bob, “Let me see what I can do with the beauty school to help students find the winners within themselves.” The school reopened in June of 1993 as Universal Beauty College. Sandy was ready to collaborate with a partner, and she found one option that floated like cream to the top of her list. Toni & Guy was founded in 1963 by the Mascolo family, a group of hairdressers and brothers, in London. Sandy’s son, Steve, a trained hairdresser with 21 years of experience, had served as an ambassador for Toni & Guy, which is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. When the company came to Denver to explore plans for growth in Colorado, it was serendipitous for Sandy. In December of 1997, Sandy opened the first Toni & Guy establishment in the Springs at Chapel Hills Mall. In 1999, she changed the name of the school, too—from

24

Universal Beauty College to Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy. “We went five years without a paycheck while putting two children through beauty school,” Sandy recalls, “but we are where we are today because our staff and students have contributed to achieving success.” Sandy shines when she recalls that Bruno Mascolo, the award-winning British Hairdresser of the Year and co-founder of Toni & Guy, lavished praise on the Academy as the nicest, most beautiful school in the country. When students and patrons walk into the Academy, they are faced with a stunning glass wall that is etched with life-enriching, character-building concepts. Among them: “Do what you love. Don’t accept the status quo. Give respect to gain respect. Be a student as well as a teacher. Do every job with passion and energy. Never give up. Embrace change. Quality over quantity. Failure is not final.” These motivational messages come from the Mascolo family, and they are visually stunning reminders to students to become their best selves. Sandy shares a personal story about a student who confided that she had never felt she could elevate herself to becoming a full-fledged professional. In light of the young woman’s personal struggles and lack of confidence within her family, Sandy imbued her with the belief that “she did not have to stay where she grew up.” Sandy has always taken great pride and care in advocating for her students in this and many other ways. These Feet Are Made for Walkin’ Make Sure That’s What They Do

By Loretta McCollum

The human foot has a lot of moving parts, including 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Over a lifetime, the average person will use these feet to walk over 150,000 miles— enough to circle the globe six times. Most Americans spend between four and six hours per day on their feet, so it’s no wonder that 75 percent of us report foot problems like bunions and calluses or chronic pain from conditions like arthritis, tendonitis, and flat feet. Foot problems range from injuries to inflammation and may be exacerbated by age or health conditions. Women are more likely to experience foot pain because of the simple fact that they’re more likely to wear ill-fitting footwear. Do we take care of these vital and complicated parts? Sadly, we don’t. Less than half of us actually seek treatment for our foot problems. Winter is the perfect time to address these issues! Spring will soon be here, which means increased outdoor activity and, of course, sandal weather. Chronic foot pain has many causes, including various forms of arthritis. Osteoarthritis results from a breakdown in the cartilage that cushions the bone joints. This allows the bones to rub together, causing pain and swelling. Joint damage connected with osteoarthritis may also trigger painful bone spurs. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition causing joint inflammation and pain. Treatment for arthritis can involve steroid injections, anti-inflammatory medications, arch supports, custom orthotics, or physical therapy. Inflamed or irritated tendons in the foot and ankle can result in tendonitis, which may be the result of an injury but is typically caused by repetition of movement. Treatment may include anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy, or surgery to lengthen or shorten the affected tendon. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, becomes inflamed. Runners and people whose footwear provide little support are more likely to develop this painful condition. Conservative treatments include rest, physical therapy, and orthotics. If such treatments are ineffective, surgery to detach the plantar fascia from the heel bone may be necessary. The condition known as hammertoe is not only unsightly; it can be painful, as well. Hammertoe occurs when two to four toes are crossed or bent in the middle of the toe joint. Ill-fitting footwear is a common cause. Early on, shoe inserts may provide relief, but surgery may become necessary to address the deformed joint. Bunions, corns, and calluses are also in the category of foot conditions that are unsightly and may be painful. A bunion is a bony bump at the base of the big toe that causes the toe to turn inward. It may be caused by arthritis, family history, or wearing narrow shoes. Treatment

26

ranges from custom shoe inserts to surgery to straighten the big toe and surrounding metatarsals. Corns and calluses manifest as thick, hard layers of skin. Corns usually occur at pressure points on the bottom of the foot or on the side of the toe. Hard corns are areas of dead skin with a central core, and they tend to be very painful. A callus is a thickening of the outer layer of skin and is usually painless. Either of these conditions can result from an improper gait or poorly fitting shoes. Your doctor may shave off the top of a callus and may recommend orthotics or surgery if the cause of the callus or corn is believed to be a poor walking style. A foot fungus is an irritation or infection involving a rash, itching or flaking skin, or thick and discolored toenails. Athlete’s foot is a common foot fungus that thrives in warm, moist environments like locker rooms and shower areas. It typically manifests as a scaly rash that may itch, burn, and peel. A prescription cream can generally clear it up. Toenail fungus causes toenails to become discolored, thickened, and deformed. The nail may also detach and peel away. Prescription medication or laser treatment are options to alleviate this problem. If you’re having foot trouble, a visit to a specialty foot care store or a podiatrist’s office is in order. Foot care stores utilize technology to analyze gait, pressure points, and foot shape to recommend pads, inserts, or shoe types. Podiatrists are doctors of podiatric medicine (DPM) who specialize in the foot and ankle. These physicians can prescribe custom orthotics or perform surgery to correct a variety of issues. If you need relief from foot pain, get in touch with a local podiatrist or specialty foot care store to see what they can do to help. It’s a step in the right direction! Aguirre Specialty Care Better Sex in Three Treatments By Janette Calabro

If you’re like most women, you have probably heard of “Kegels.” These exercises strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, helping to decrease the vaginal loosen on that so often accompanies vaginal childbirth. You may also have heard—vaguely—that there are non-surgical treatments you can undergo that will help improve your sex life by restoring vaginal tightness…but you may have been too embarrassed to ask your doctor about these treatments. One Denver-area doctor wants you to know that these treatments are real and ever-improving, and you don’t need to be afraid to ask! What used to be a hushed, awkward conversation with your gynecologist has changed a little— for the better. “Patients can have this conversation with confidence,” says Oscar A. Aguirre, MD, FPMRS, FACOG, FAACS. Intimate concerns for women still require sensitive conversation, but secrecy no longer factors into the dialogue. Dr. Aguirre is the founder of Aguirre Specialty Care. For more than 20 years, he has specialized in urogynecology, vaginal rejuvenation, aesthetic body contouring, and bio-identical hormone replacement. With an open heart, an open mind, and great listening capacity, Dr. Aguirre gracefully unveils treatment options—and most of the treatments are simple, with no pain or downtime. It’s a bit like stepping out of your comfort zone and into the sunlight, into a place where problems are resolved and a confident new you materializes. Urogynecology covers a multitude of health issues and a wide variety of treatment options, sometimes including surgery. Medical devices are approved by the FDA for specific purposes, and that’s how they must be promoted. However, after a device has been in use for its specified treatment, additional benefits may emerge, which can be a big win for patients. About five years ago, Dr. Aguirre reports, he was the first to use the FemiLift device to treat women who reported vaginal laxity. FemiLift is FDA-approved for resurfacing vaginal tissue. It improves collagen production and vascularity in the vagina, which results in vaginal tightening and improved lubrication. If you think better blood flow and more lubrication sounds like it would lead to better sex, Dr. Aguirre points out, you’d be right— patients report that it does. As a matter of fact, when Dr. Aguirre’s scrub nurse, Heather, heard about this painless procedure that would improve vaginal laxity, she stepped right up and volunteered to be the first patient. As an added bonus, the FemiLift treatment can also reduce the symptoms of bladder leakage, which is another common problem reported after vaginal childbirth. The procedure itself is short and requires no downtime. If a woman misses the vaginal tightness she felt before childbirth and craves a snugger vaginal entrance,

28

she might consider the Viveve treatment. “Viveve treats the opening of the vagina,” notes Dr. Aguirre, “not the whole vagina.” The improvements can be felt after one painless 30-minute treatment, and no downtime is required. “Viveve restores sexual function by improving vaginal sensation and sexual response,” Dr. Aguirre says. “It also reduces urinary incontinence.” Another in-office procedure that is often combined with Viveve and FemiLift is the O-Shot (yes, the “O” stands for orgasm). This procedure is an injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) that is isolated from the patient’s own blood. With a very slim needle, Dr. Aguirre injects the PRP into the clitoris and sensitive zones in the vagina. “Patients are very responsive,” Dr. Aguirre says. Patients at Aguirre Specialty Care can choose one of these treatments or a combination of the three, depending on their symptoms and their desired outcomes. “All three in combination are powerful,” Dr. Aguirre states. “The key is patient selection.” Sharon Manzione, Dr. Aguirre’s practice manager, shares that Dr. Aguirre listens to his patients intently and allows plenty of time for open discussion. “Women may come into the office crying because of issues they’ve had for years, and they leave whole,” explains Sharon. “Dr. Aguirre is kind and giving, with a good sense of humor. He is the whole package.” Dr. Aguirre grew up in Colorado and is happy to call it home. He studied urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery at Colorado Gynecology and Continence Center, the first urogynecologic practice in the Rocky Mountains. He took over as medical director, eventually changing the name to Aguirre Specialty Care. Dr. Aguirre is boardcertified in obstetrics and gynecology, with a sub-specialty in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. To improve his community, he donates a portion of the profits from his practice to organizations that support abused or battered women and children. Dr. Aguirre believes that there is a solution for every problem. He wants to help you “live free from limitations brought on by your urogynecological and cosmetic conditions.” Aguirre Specialty Care is located at 9800 Pyramid Court, in Englewood. Be Your Biggest Fan Love and Honor Your Own Being “There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.” —John Lennon I must admit that this quote really hits me between the eyes. I am a huge John Lennon fan, but I had never read it before. Several sentences in this quote really got me thinking. “There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love.” What a true statement. For most of us, the emotion of fear causes us to become immobilized. We can’t move forward in any area of our lives. Sometimes fear becomes so intense that all we want to do is escape. Hence, we “pull back from life.” When we are in love, it’s as if someone puts rose-colored glasses over every experience in our lives. We may come across a bad driver, but we don’t even notice. We may run into someone who is having a bad day, but, by the time we have to leave, we are both smiling. It is a wonderful thing to love. w

The line that affects me the most in this quote, however, is: “If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create.” Many of us might feel that loving by honoring our own being is selfish. I am not sure where we learned this, but what I have come to know through the years is that this part of Lennon’s quote is right on. If we are not our own biggest fans, we will not be able to give those in our lives whom we love the best of us. They will only get a portion of who we are. “If you doubt the virtue in self-honor, remember what the flight attendant says, ‘Put your own oxygen mask on first.’ You are of no use to anyone else if you have not taken care of your own needs first—this includes your own emotional, as well as physical, well-being.” —Jonathan Lockwood Huie John Lennon got it. He was a man who understood how important love is in the world. He also understood that without loving and honoring ourselves, we will not be the incredible, deliberate creators that we came forth to be. This Valentine’s Day, let’s give ourselves the best gift possible… the love and honor of our own being…and then we can begin to spread it around! WE

Do We Help Our Kids Too Much? Be a Guide on the Side We all love our kids, but do we help them too much? We try to keep them from harm, but do we stop them from taking chances? We want them to make decisions, but do we plan every aspect of their lives? If we solve all our kids’ problems, do we rob them of the ability to develop necessary coping skills? What do they learn, if we do everything for them? These questions came up recently over coffee with some neighbors. Sally complained that Johnny was always forgetting something...his lunch, his homework, his ball glove…it was always something. She wondered whether she should rescue him by delivering the forgotten item or let him face the consequences, hoping it would spur him to be more mindful. JoAnn worried about how much she should help Susie with homework and school projects. She asked if it was better to show her how or just be available if Susie had a question. “It seems like Susie has the most trouble getting started, especially on projects. Should I make a plan of attack for her or let her do it?” she asked. Margaret told about the time her son came home and obviously had been in a fight. “I asked Mark what happened,” she said. “He muttered something and went to his room. I’m in a quandary over how to handle it.” She sighed and recalled Mark mentioning something about bullies at school. A lengthy discussion about parental responsibility ensued. We talked about just how much responsibility we should take in

By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS

situations like these. We agreed that our reactions and responses should be partially determined by the kid’s age…the younger the child, the more parents should do, while still including the kids in choosing a solution. Asking, “How can we solve this problem?” met the consensus. The group came to the conclusion that, in general, when our children experience problems, whether with school work or relationships, it isn’t too helpful for us to step in and solve the problems. We decided that asking the kids what they thought should be done and then helping them come up with several solutions was the most helpful reaction. After brainstorming possible solutions for a couple of minutes, go over them together. We agreed that some unacceptable solutions might be mentioned, but that all should be carefully considered. The kids will usually know what is acceptable and what isn’t. The idea is to let the kids come up with their own solutions, with our guidance. Be a guide on the side rather than taking over. That way, we give the kids a chance to build the confidence to make their own decisions on ways to solve problems. Most people don’t want someone telling them how to solve their problems. Kids are people, too. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

The Salon Professional Academy Preparing Students for Beautiful Careers By Patty Schlegel

The tired young woman sank down into her seat. She had just flown in from Japan and was now traveling along the Rhine River for a work event. As the train gently rocked back and forth, she looked out the window. The beauty of the scenery overcame her, and, to her surprise, she burst into tears. A woman leaned toward her and asked if she was all right. “Yes,” the young woman responded. “I just can’t believe I am getting paid to do this.” Kitty Victor, consultant and co-founder of The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA) in Colorado Springs, tells this story as if it had happened yesterday. After 49 years in the cosmetology industry, Kitty is still excited about her chosen field, which has taken her to Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Germany, and Africa. “All I ever wanted to do was hair,” she explains. She is eager to share her expertise about the cosmetology industry, which she describes as flexible, rewarding, creative, and recession-proof. Education is key to being successful in the industry, says Marla Knapp, the co-founder, owner, and TSPA director. She is proud to have a highly experienced team at TSPA. She and Kitty, along with Greg Chavez, founded TSPA in Colorado Springs 13 years ago after realizing that students in the industry were missing some elements that would afford them successful and long-lasting careers. TSPA offers a Redken-endorsed education system. With the Redken-infused curriculum, Marla feels, the students are getting the latest innovative experience in styling, cutting, and hair technology. The team at TSPA is also proud to offer certifications in Dermalogica and Make-Up Designory (MUD) to their students. As a successful salon owner of 30 years, the entrepreneur in Marla knew that students didn’t just need the latest and greatest techniques to become successful in the field—she knew her students needed real-world experience. The students at TSPA work on clients, learn how to establish client relationships, and learn how to build a business and marketing plan. “We really want you to think about reality,” says Cathy Philip-Rogers, the financial aid director. Students must research and design a plan for a future salon, including determining the square footage needed, what services to offer, how many employees to hire, and what benefits to offer them. Cathy says that TSPA students graduate with an 85 percent GPA and attendance record, which is higher than the state requirement of 70 percent. “If students pass us, we know they will pass the boards,” she says. Men’s hair care has become the largest growth area of the industry. To accommodate this growth, TSPA began offering barbering classes in August

34

of 2017. TSPA offers separate licensing programs in cosmetology, aesthetics, nail technology, and barbering. Marla explains that even people who have been in the industry for years need advanced education to expand their services. With separate programs, someone who already has a cosmetology license can also get a barbering license for an additional 300 hours. Starting in March of 2019, TSPA will offer part-time barbering and cosmetology classes in the evening. Although the industry is large, it is close-knit, Cathy says, and job placement is high after graduating from TSPA. The educators at TSPA have decades of experience and are passionate about education—and many of them are salon owners, which gives students ample opportunity for mentorship. Cathy notes that students are not necessarily salon-bound after graduation. One former student is now in Hollywood, doing makeup for a movie. Other potential opportunities include research and development, product sales, salon ownership, celebrity styling, platform artistry, and education. “We try to feed each student’s passion,” she says. “Whatever your passion is, that is where your drive goes.” Samantha Souder is a 2016 cosmetology graduate who has returned to TSPA for her barbering license. She didn’t even think of going anywhere else, she says. “They really know what they are talking about, and it’s such a warm and inviting environment.” Helping students realize their potential, watching their transformations as they go through the program, and celebrating every success is what it is all about, says Heather Byers, the director of education at TSPA. After 20 years in the industry, she cannot fathom having a career in anything else. “I’m excited to come to work every day,” she says. “There is always something new that reignites my passion for the industry.” Heather is proud to be part of TSPA, helping students achieve a lifelong career that, as she notes, “can take you anywhere in the world that you want to go.” The Salon Professional Academy is located at 4388 Austin Bluffs Parkway, in Colorado Springs. Menopause Makeover Strategies for Wellness By Janette Calabro

Musicals and movies and books have been written about it—lots of them. Why, then, does menopause remain a mystery? Though we have a lot in common, every woman’s journey through menopause is unique. Your best friend might handle menopause with a jaunty sense of humor, laughing at the latest menopause blog. You, on the other hand, might prefer the dynamics of a support group or rely heavily on the vast knowledge and sage advice of your OB-GYN. Resources for navigating the “change of life” are endless. There are private Facebook sites devoted to women who want to share with a support group. Maybe you prefer a serious discussion with your physician about hormone levels, help from a dietician to improve your diet, or sessions with a personal trainer. Of course, a consultation with a mental health practitioner might help with all the ups and downs. Many women agree that a combination of all of the above is the best education and treatment for menopause. Sex hormone levels naturally decrease as women age, and the ovaries eventually stop releasing eggs, which means that menstruation ends. Twelve months after your period stops permanently, menopause is said to start. There appears to be some link between when menstruation starts and when it ultimately ends. For example, one study states that a menstruating 11-yearold is more likely to start menopause prematurely, before she reaches 40 years, as opposed to a girl who starts her period at age 13. The average age for women in the United States to hit menopause is 52 years. Are you headed toward menopause? It doesn’t happen all at once. A woman’s body transitions over several years. Common symptoms include hot flashes, vaginal dryness, irregular bleeding, insomnia, and incontinence, along with mood extremes that might include depression and anxiety. The production of hormones is complicated—too much is bad for us, and too little doesn’t work, either. For example, insomnia may be related to insulin production or weight gain. Reducing sugar and alcohol in your diet may have a positive outcome against night sweats and can lead to better sleep. A consultation with your physician about your hormone levels is a sensible choice. Prescription medications such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT), a combination of estrogen and progesterone (or only estrogen, if you don’t have a uterus), is one option to help reduce hot flashes and night sweats. HRT may even help prevent osteoporosis. Bioidentical HRT consists of hormones that are chemically identical to the hormones that your body produces. These are available commercially but are often obtained from compounding pharmacies, where medications are created for individual patients. Like all medications, HRT comes with side effects, and it’s not

for everyone. Your doctor can help assess the risks and benefits to determine if HRT is best for you. Nontraditional remedies are great alternatives for treating both mind and body, if prescriptions aren’t your cup of tea. Though many methods are not clinically proven to work, they have helped many women navigate the troublesome symptoms of menopause, and they might help you, too. Night sweats disrupting your sleep? Try black cohosh, soy, or flaxseed. Topical vitamin E helps vaginal dryness. Acupuncture may help correct hormone imbalances. While studying the long list of natural alternatives, consider that the jury is still out on their effectiveness. In addition, natural supplements are not regulated in the same way as prescription medications, and they may interact with each other (or with prescriptions you’re taking). Talk to your doctor before taking a supplement. If mood swings and sleep disruption are your primary symptoms, try a yoga class or anything aerobic. Exercise reduces irritability—combined with meditation and deep breathing, the benefits multiply. During menopause, metabolism slows down, which makes dieting a tempting choice. However, low-calorie diets alone may decrease muscle mass. Instead of dramatically cutting calories, try cutting out some carbs and watching each meal’s portion size. Reduce your chances of bone loss and osteoporosis by getting 30 minutes of physical activity most days, and don’t forget to add resistance training to your regimen. Of course, a cold drink without caffeine or alcohol might squash those hot flashes instantly (fan optional). Try a glass of cold water or antioxidant-infused fruit juice. Forgetfulness, trouble focusing, and irritability sneak their way into daily life during menopause. Tackle these symptoms by staying socially and mentally active. To Your Good Health

Heart to Heart

Women and Heart Disease

By Karen Zunke Smith

The topic of heart disease may provoke anxiety and fear in some people, while others believe “it could never happen to me.” Don’t kid yourself—the risk is very real. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men. The good news is that there are many ways to reduce your risk. In fact, heart disease is considered to be one of the most preventable of medical conditions. Statistics related to heart disease are startling, especially for women. Though it is the leading cause of death for both men and women, outcomes for women are worse than they are for men. For example, after having their first heart attack, 26 percent of women aged 45 years and older die within a year. Within five years of a heart attack, 47 percent of women will develop heart failure, suffer from a stroke, or die, compared with 36 percent of men. Perhaps most unsettling is that 64 percent of women who die suddenly of coronary artery disease (CAD) had no previous symptoms. Part of the reason for these grim statistics is that women tend to seek medical attention for heart attack symptoms only after heart damage has already occurred. The symptoms of heart attack in women tend to be vague and often go unrecognized, which delays medical care. Also, the average age of women at the time of their first heart attack is 72 years (versus 65 for men), and advanced age brings a greater incidence of other risk factors. Women are also less likely than men to take prescribed

medications intended to keep heart and other medical conditions in check. The three key risk factors for heart disease are hypertension, high LDL cholesterol levels, and smoking. About 49 percent of Americans have at least one of these risk factors. Other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also increase the risk of heart disease, including diabetes, poor diet, physical inactivity, being overweight, excessive alcohol use, prolonged stress, advanced age, and family history. Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease. It is caused by an accumulation of plaque in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. This may lead to atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries), which makes it harder for blood and oxygen to reach the heart muscle. Angina is the most common symptom of coronary artery disease. It causes chest pain that may radiate to shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or back. Angina can be difficult to distinguish from a heart attack because the symptoms are so similar. Unlike a heart attack, angina usually resolves quickly with rest or nitroglycerin, and it does not cause damage to the heart.

While chest pain is the most common symptom of heart attack in both women and men, women are more likely to experience other symptoms, with or without chest pain. Such symptoms may include: chest discomfort (pain, pressure, squeezing, or a sensation of fullness); pain in arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach; sweating or shortness of breath with minimal or no exertion; lightheadedness; nausea or indigestion; and unexplained, sudden, or excessive fatigue. When symptoms occur, call 911. The sooner you get to an emergency room, the better your chances of surviving the event and minimizing damage to your heart. Your healthcare provider is the best resource to identify your personal risk factors for heart disease and suggest prevention strategies. These may include weight management, exercise, smoking cessation, stress reduction, and a treatment plan for other conditions that increase the risk of heart disease. Lifestyle changes can be hard. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from family, friends, and medical professionals. Registered dieticians, available through many hospitals and grocery stores, can advise on dietary changes and meal planning. Committing to a new exercise routine may be easier if done with a partner or as part of a group. Focus on activities you have enjoyed in the past or try something new. Consider walking, jogging, golf, tennis, dance, or fitness classes. Stress reduction and smoking cessation may be addressed through behavioral therapy, medications, lifestyle changes, and relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best options for you. You may be able to prevent the progression of heart disease or even see some reversal by strictly adhering to your healthcare provider’s recommendations for medications, diet, lifestyle, and monitoring. If surgery becomes necessary, minimally invasive techniques may be sufficient. The month of February is when we focus on matters of the heart, so it’s a good time to think about heart health. Learn about risk factors, talk to your doctor, take a CPR class, and know the symptoms of a heart attack. If symptoms occur, call 911 immediately. It’s Not Your Parents’ Chain Link The Latest in Fencing

By Anne Yankus

Some of us just love to look at the large, borderless lawns around our houses. On the other hand, sometimes we need a fence to keep pets and plants in (or neighbors and their pets out). When you decide you’re ready for a fence, what kind of fence might you want to build? There are many materials, options, and styles to choose from. First things first—you need to determine the primary purpose of your fence. Is it for privacy, for security, to mark the property line, or just for decoration? Privacy fences create (of course) privacy. They often need to be at least six feet tall and have tightly-spaced boards or stakes to minimize visibility. Security fences are equally straightforward—they’re designed to keep people (or animals) out. They also need to be quite tall (to deter casual fence-hoppers) and often have smooth vertical surfaces and pointy tops (to keep out dedicated climbers). A lower-profile option is a safety fence, which usually functions as a pet enclosure or to deter trespassers and wildlife. Practical safety fences can fulfill their function without costing as much money as a higher-profile fence. For decoration or marking property lines, you can get away with much less fence; mainly, it just needs to be appropriately placed and visually appealing. Before you choose a fencing material, you may want to consider what design styles are trending. Some popular styles

include horizontal fencing, as opposed to the more vertical look of old-fashioned picked fences; wood alternatives, such as vinyl, aluminum, and pre-fabricated concrete; plant integration, with built-in planter boxes or “living” vine fences; and lighting integration, with cap lights or up lights. With a few design ideas under your belt, it’s time to consider materials. One of the most classic and popular fencing options is, of course, wood. Wooden fences have many advantages—they’re economical, provide a privacy barrier, can be formed into any shape, and can be painted any color. On the other hand, wood requires regular maintenance and may need replacement every decade or so. It also attracts wood pests and may change color or warp when exposed to a lot of sunlight. Another popular fence material is iron. Iron fences are usually crafted using wrought iron and have the advantages of ›››

being strong and long-lasting without rotting or warping. Wrought iron fences, though not as versatile as wood, provide an artistic visual aesthetic. However, due to their thin profile, they do not provide the privacy (or safety for pets) that you can get from a wooden fence. Iron fences are also vulnerable to rusting over time and still require regular repainting or maintenance. A newer alternative is aluminum fencing, which has a significantly lower cost than wrought iron. Aluminum can be crafted into styles similar to that of wrought iron fences but without the worry of rust or any regular maintenance. As a more malleable metal than iron, aluminum fences also have the benefit of being rackable (that is, you can mount them in a rack), which helps eliminate gaps if your yard is sloped or on a hill. Also, as premanufactured items, aluminum fences almost always come with manufacturer warranties. If your primary fencing goal is to create a low-profile safety fence to confine your pet, you might want to consider the option of invisible fencing. Invisible fencing, which utilizes high-frequency sound to keep your pet from crossing an underground line, can be purchased and installed at a reasonable cost and is quite adaptable to whatever kind of terrain your yard has to offer. Invisible fencing also has the benefit of being, well, invisible—it maintains the open yard aesthetic you may prefer. Invisible fences are good for deterring dogs that are diggers or climbers, and you’ll never again let a pet loose by forgetting to close the gate. While traditional fences work well on flat or gently sloping yards, invisible fencing works on almost any terrain. Invisible fences can span hilly spots, wooded areas and water. Once you’ve decided on the kind of fencing you desire, you need to choose a professional to design and install it. Get a few estimates from local fencing companies to make sure that the cost of materials and installation will fit into your budget. Whether you’re looking for a way to keep your pet safe at home or just a nice aesthetic for your property line, a new fence is a great way to provide the finishing touch for your yard. Positive Perspective

Dare To Dream Make A Dream Collage for 2019 Here we are, into the second month of 2019. Maybe you’re sticking with your New Year’s resolutions, maybe you’re not. Perhaps you gave up on New Year’s resolutions years ago. Instead of all of this angst, do you want to have some fun? “Set a goal SO BIG that you can’t achieve it until you grow into the person who can.”—Unknown In years past, I most likely would have suggested writing down these big goals and reading them every night before going to bed. Visualizing them. Feeling them. Pretending they were yours. This year? Let’s just make a dream collage. Like I said, let’s have some fun! “A dream collage is pictures of your goals. It is like your future photo album.”—Bo Bennett The first step is to get a large art board, some glue, and a very large stack of magazines. Take a few hours to look through the magazines, cutting out the pictures that appeal to you. Want a new car? Find a picture of your dream car and cut it out. (Make sure it is exactly the one you want…same color, exact model, and so on.) Want a baby (or grandchildren)? Find the cutest baby pictures and cut them out. Want a new house? Same routine. Looking for that perfect relationship with a significant other? Find pictures of the

happiest couples you have ever seen. Want a killer body? Those won’t be hard to find…after all, we are looking through magazines! Next step? Take that board and that glue and make a collage of your dreams. “Your goals, minus your doubts, equal your reality.”—Ralph Marston When you are satisfied with your dream board, the next step is the most difficult one. Put it away. Hide it under your bed. Don’t look at it. Don’t think about it. Resist the temptation to revisit it. LEAVE IT ALONE. This may feel counterintuitive. After all, shouldn’t there be some struggle involved here? Some action that has to be taken in order to make it all happen? “The easiest way to grow, is to let go. Knowing that someone else is managing the show.”—Unknown What happens next? At the end of 2019, dig out this dream collage. Look at it. See what has manifested. If you are like most people who play this game, you will be truly amazed at how many of these dreams have manifested. It’s not all there yet? Well, if you are like most of us, you will have grown and changed this year. Update your dream collage. Stick it back under your bed. Take a look at the end of 2020. Let me know how it works! WE
