Thanksgiving—A Time to Put Feet to Your Feelings Have you ever been at a loss for words to express
your gratitude? “Thank you” just isn’t enough sometimes. I wish someone would invent a word that would do the feeling justice. Until that word comes into being, my family will express our gratitude at a 5K. This year, I will spend Thanksgiving with my sons and their wives. There are too many highlights at Thanksgiving to pick a favorite, but the YMCA Turkey Trot has become a tradition for us. On Thanksgiving morning, we get up at what feels like the crack of dawn, put on our best running shoes, and head to the park. We get in line for hot coffee and numbered bibs. By this time, I’m already tired and ready to curl up under a warm blanket. There is no goofing off allowed here, though! I grab a cow bell and head to the starting line. We all hop around to stay warm until, finally, the race begins, with lots of yelling, cowbell clanging, and cheering. Before you know it, the first runner comes in. Soon after, I’m highfiving my kids as they run through the finish line. That’s right—my running shoes are for hopping for warmth and jumping for joy. The Turkey Trot was started to help the participants burn calories as they anticipate the huge feast to come. The average American will consume 3,000 to 4,500 calories at this one meal! This 3.1-mile fun run doesn’t do much to combat a meal that size, but it starts the day off on a happy, energetic note. At home, we cook and talk about our blessings. This year, we are thankful for each other, our warm homes, running water, jobs, feet and legs so we can run and jump, and wonderful friends. As we think of those who have suffered so much in the hurricanes and earthquakes and natural disasters, our words stick in our throats. How do we give thanks without remembering so many who are asking for help? We can say “thank you” by going to a shelter to cook or to a halfway house to paint and clean. We can fill and deliver a shoebox with warm socks, gloves, and toys for children who have never had them before, or we can run for a cause we believe in. I am thankful for this magazine—for Janet Van deWalle, our founder; our advertisers and readers; the distribution crew; our writers; Erin in our art department; Liz, our copy editor; our mailroom TMR; and last, but certainly not least, Shannon Majors, our operations manager here in Colorado Springs, who gives her all and more. Happy Thanksgiving!

From the Runway to Real Life Your Fall and Winter Trend Report
By Holly Bell
Returning from a late fall vacation that included shopping in six states and putting together a fall televised fashion show has made me acutely aware of what is really going on in the stores for fall trends in 2018. Many of the top runway styles are tweaked to make them more wearable for the everyday person. I am happy to say that there is something fresh for everyone this year. Leather (and vegan leather) is huge this season. Along with the expected leather outerwear, stylish separates are featured in stores this fall. There is a smorgasbord this season in beautiful black, but you’ll also see colorful shades of neutrals and jewel tones. Leather pants feature a high waistline this year, which makes legs look long and sleek. Leather skirts in every length and cut are in stores now, and they’re a must-have this season. They are warm, slimming, and go with absolutely everything! I am a strong advocate of this chic trend. Designers love to reference past seasons, and this year is no different. A 1970s vibe is alive and well with fabulous fun prints. They are eye-catching in stores, in rich shades of burgundy and dark turquoise, mustard paired with gray, and other interesting combinations. Prints are eclectic and artistic, with a light-hearted touch. A lot of women are afraid to wear prints, but this is the year to try them on! Prints can camouflage perceived figure flaws and bring out your personality. My favorite print combination is a dark background floral. Elegant in a dress and classy in a long skirt, these feminine prints are pure flattery. Tall boots are still the rage this year and make every outfit look sophisticated. This is the year to be a wild thing. Although I consider it a classic, animal print reached its peak popularity in the 1980s. This year may surpass that. I saw animal print galore in virtually every store. I am rejoicing, as this is one of my favorite patterns. The standard leopard print is popular, of course, but I also saw tiger, snake, and various patterns that mix in animal prints along with others. Needless to say, keeping it simple is the key when wearing an animal print. For example, with an animal print coat or jacket, wear a tailored white blouse along with your favorite denim jean. To really play it safe, pair an animal print with all black. Still bashful of this trend? Top your solids with an animal print scarf. There’s no need to worry about matching any color. Animal print goes with everything! It looks edgier when worn with red, denim, or any blues or greens. There is nothing more chic and more fun than an animal print shoe. You will find them in flats, mules, and boots. These would be perfect to wear with your new black leather pants! Tweed and plaid are staples every fall. This year, you will find plaids done in interesting new color combinations. Menswear-

Physicians Recommended Top Permanent Makeup Artist! inspired houndstooth and pinstripes are timeless favorites. There is one style trend I noticed that I want to pass on to you. If you are wearing a classically styled shirt, add a little femininity to it by tucking in the front and leaving the back tail out. (This is also a great way to show off a tailored basic belt that has an interesting buckle.) Worn this way, a tailored shirt looks particularly stylish and shows off your waistline, but it still looks more polished than wearing the shirt completely untucked. There are also some trends carrying over from last year that designers and customers can’t seem to live without. The interesting sleeve is still very much a part of 2018 trends, along with velvet. Lace and insets of lace are still in vogue. You can pair lace with jeans for a modern look; there’s no need to save it for a special occasion. Multi-level skirt lengths are still the rage, mostly shorter in the front and longer in the back. Tame this look with those tall boots you purchased last year. I was pleasantly surprised by what was offered in the stores I visited throughout the Midwest and the South on my ultimate fall shopping trip. There was a fresh look about the fall styles but still a comfortable familiarity. There is definitely something for everyone this year, no matter your size, your age, or your style. My advice is to go shopping and enjoy the fabulous feeling of a new, stylish outfit! McNulty Jewelers Pride, Passion, and Work Ethic By William J. Dagendesh
For nearly two decades, McNulty Jewelers has combined personal customer interaction and a strong work ethic philosophy to provide clients with a family-oriented shopping experience. “Providing quality jewelry services in a friendly environment is what makes our business unique,” says owner and operator Eddie McNulty. “We don’t pressure people into buying anything. It’s because of our business style that customers say they feel like family and friends, not like customers or clients, when shopping here.” From cleaning gems to restoring jewelry, McNulty Jewelers offers speedy service at affordable prices. Services include appraisals, cleaning, mounting and setting, pearl and bead restringing, recreating family heirlooms, replacing stones, jewelry restoration, ring sizing, soldering, and watch battery replacement. McNulty Jewelers also creates engagement rings upon request and specializes in jewelry repair, usually fixing items while customers wait. All products are handmade from scratch, Eddie says. It is the quality craftsmanship and one-on-one customer interaction Eddie developed in his youth that attracts and retains customers, he says. To him, it seems like only yesterday that he recognized his creative abilities and penchant for working with his hands. These traits have paid dividends throughout his career. As a youngster in Hyattsville, Maryland, Eddie developed a strong work ethic while doing odd jobs that included cleaning swimming pools, mowing lawns, and painting houses. “There wasn’t anything I wouldn’t do to earn a paycheck,” Eddie recalls. For a time, he studied business management at the University of Texas at El Paso, but he soon realized that this particular career path wasn’t his calling. He apprenticed for three jewelers, including his brother-in-law, and learned the trade through trial and error. “When you’re young, you try and figure out what you want to do with your life, and each job helped push me in the right direction. That led to opening my own business,” Eddie shares. Despite his work ethic and keen business acumen, the first few years of running his own business were hardly lucrative, he recalls. When the recession struck the nation in 2008, not very many people were buying jewelry. Many businesses folded, leaving a void in the gem-buying world. “It was a bad time for everyone, and I did whatever it took to get through it. Dealing with salespeople and managers early on in my career was overwhelming,” Eddie says. “I began feeling more optimistic around 2012. Now, I have people who care about our services. I can’t wait to come to work.” Store manager

Cassandra Carter has been with McNulty Jewelers for about six years, and she agrees that it’s a great place to work. “McNulty Jewelers is geared toward its customers, which is why I love my job here,” she says. While there are challenges to owning his own shop, Eddie loves the creative freedom that comes with it. “While I was working for other jewelers, the stores would design something, and I would built it,” Eddie shares. “Sometimes, I made things I didn’t want to make or that I thought were a bad idea. Having my own business allows me to direct customers to what might be best for them.” As a result, shoppers everywhere praise McNulty Jewelers as Colorado Springs’ premier boutique jeweler. One shopper, Lynell Wall, says that McNulty Jewelers offers the best customer service and craftsmanship. “Eddie re-designed my wedding ring and cleaned my husband’s white-gold ring, and it looks brand new. He did an outstanding job,” Lynell says emphatically. “Eddie has a wonderful eye, and his attention to detail is remarkable. Professional Pet Grooming It’s Not Just for Looks! By Brie Christensen
More often than not, furry family members take care of their people in more ways than we realize. These sweet companions make great listeners, relieve stress, and love us unconditionally. Most pets take great pride in protecting their owners from harm. When it comes time to take care of these cuddly pals, it’s critical to make smart decisions as caregivers. According to experts, professional pet grooming is one sure way to make a positive impact on a pet’s overall health. Many people overlook the fact that grooming isn’t just for beauty—it actually allows for better hygiene, which leads to better health and wellness. One advantage of finding a regular groomer is that the groomer will become familiar with your pet during regular appointments. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), groomers sometimes discover health concerns such as ear infections or skin conditions during grooming sessions that the owner may have overlooked. Regular grooming can also aid in catching nuisances like fleas and ticks, helping ensure that animals remain healthy and clean. Another concern that further stresses the importance of pet grooming is hair matting. These tangled hair strands often grow tightly and pose the threat of cutting off blood circulation, which can ultimately lead to amputation. Cat owners need to beware, too—it’s not just dogs that face these traumas. Although cats are well known for bathing themselves, they, too, can acquire terrible matting. Groomers offer various services, such as bathing, cutting and styling, nail trimming, and even teeth cleaning. Dentists recommend that we humans brush our teeth regularly to maintain good oral health, and a pet’s dental health is just as important. The American Veterinary Dental College recommends annual professional teeth cleaning for all pets, as it lessens the chance of dental disease, which can occur in animals that are not regularly seen. Professional teeth cleaning options vary. If the pet owner chooses to make a trip to the veterinary clinic, teeth cleaning may include a complete oral examination and dental x-rays. Most groomers offer an anesthesia-free teeth cleaning procedure, which isn’t as extensive as what a pet would undergo at the vet. While the ASPCA generally recommended that owners bathe pets at least once every three months, some animals or breeds with certain conditions may require additional attention or grooming. Climate might be another factor to consider for some pet parents, as different seasons might require a different type of grooming style. Again, this heavily depends on the breed and the animal’s specific shedding habits. There are many factors to consider when searching for a professional pet groomer. Most consider their furry critters to be family members, so it’s critical to weigh options. Some might opt for a traditional brick and
mortar pet grooming service, while others might go for a mobile groomer. Convenience is a big factor in this choice, as mobile groomers come to their clients. One thing remains certain: It’s always important to ask for referrals from veterinarians, friends, and family when hunting for a groomer, according to The Humane Society of the United States. Research should also be done prior to meeting with a groomer, and owners should always ask questions. Of course, asking about costs and services is important, but the American Kennel Club recommends asking a groomer for a tour of the facility and asking about the groomer’s training and experience. If the facility employs multiple groomers, it’s important to know whether your pet will see the same one at each appointment. Arguably, the most vital step in moving forward with professional pet grooming is preparing your pet for a visit to the groomer. Owners must ensure that pets are up to date on vaccines. They should also inform the groomer ahead of time about any specifics relating to their pets, including allergies, medical conditions, and general dislikes. Pet grooming can sometimes place emotional strain on both pets and owners. To overcome this, owners should attempt to better prepare their animals for grooming services by brushing regularly at home—this will help pets feel more relaxed during professional appointments. When it comes time to finally drop a pet off for grooming, owners should also keep in mind that sticking around too long could cause more stress for all parties involved, as emotional good-byes can raise a pet’s stress levels. In the end, pet grooming doesn’t need to be taxing for pet or owner. With proper research and preparation, your pet can reap the cosmetic and health benefits of regular professional grooming. When it’s all said and done, nothing beats bringing home a happy, clean, and healthy pet. Sources for this article included: humanesociety.org, aspca.org, avdc.org, and akc.org. WE November 2018

The Thoughtful Holiday We Are All Grateful
By Sharon Knierim
It comes at almost every Thanksgiving dinner. You know— that moment when the host or hostess insists we all go around the table and share with everyone what we are truly thankful for. You only get one crack at this each year, and you naturally want your contribution to be outstanding and appreciated. When participating in these marathon responses, I am always grateful to be the first person to name what I consider my biggest blessing. By doing so, I’m off the hook and don’t feel that I have to compete with the folks who must have come prepared with a speech, which, by the way, is always impressive. Their monologues compare to those mimeographed Christmas letters that hail the success of an entire family and often resemble a 1970s TV script. By the time six or seven guests have told us about their blessings, it’s hard not to repeat what has already been said. I have found myself thinking, “Oh, I like that. Maybe I can incorporate that into how we got rid of the dog’s fleas.” Do you ever get the feeling that these little speeches become comparative? When the guy across the table tells us that he’s grateful for getting such a good deal on his new Alfa Romeo,
and I am planning to share that we are happy that little Timmy has stopped wetting the bed, it doesn’t seem like we are on the same level. Wouldn’t it be delicious if, one year, we all got naughty and said what we really were thankful for at that very moment? We would probably hear things like, “Thank goodness Aunt Hazel didn’t dry out the turkey this year,” or “Aren’t we all glad that Uncle Iggy couldn’t make it because he always thinks that wearing a lampshade as a hat makes things more festive?” or maybe “We can all raise our glasses to your not bringing your bratty six kids this year.” Sounds mean-spirited, doesn’t it?

At first it was a stab in the dark; would this form of exposure work or would I need to look for another venue to get my services noticed? I have been very pleased with the quality of the magazine, the staff I have worked with, and most of all the quality of prospects who have become wonderful clients. I wholeheartedly recommend advertising in this publication.” —Pauli Hubbard, CFP with Creative Financial Services, Inc.

Maybe we should not plan on doing that. I think that there is almost nobody who is not thankful for something in their lives. In fact, when you ask people what they are most grateful for, nearly all of them respond with something about their good health or a detail about their close family and loved ones. We seem to be mainly thankful for the basics of life. Everyone who enjoys good health should understand what a blessing that is. Being able to access healthy and nutritious food and clean water should never be taken for granted. The gift of living in a warm and stable home, protected from the elements, is not a blessing that everyone enjoys. Although the kiddos may not agree, having a safe and forward-thinking school is also a bonus for which we should all be thankful. Have you planned what you’ll say this Thanksgiving if you’re asked what you are most thankful for? It might be fine to stop and think about it, even if you are not asked. One day, as I was driving and listening to public radio, I heard about people in another country who were being bombed day and night. Although it wasn’t Thanksgiving Day, I was certainly willing to give thanks that I can drive to the supermarket without much chance of being attacked or kidnapped or blown to bits. Think about it. Here in America, we have much to be thankful for. It is so easy to take these blessings for granted! I am often guilty of that, but it’s an opportunity to rearrange priorities and decide what is really important in our lives. Of course, not everything has to be a big event. Some of the smallest happenings in life are true treasures and gifts to us. If you are hosting the Thanksgiving festivities this year and are contemplating the tradition of letting everyone announce what they’re grateful for, why not change it up a bit? Instead of doing the oral version of this exercise at the table, let everyone write on a slip of paper or index card what they are thankful for. Collect all the cards and drop them into a basket or bowl. Draw them out one at a time, read them to the guests, and let them figure out who wrote each one. It just might happen that people truly enjoy that. Whatever your Thanksgiving plans are, I hope you have a wonderful holiday. This is my favorite holiday of the year, and I am thankful for it. Have a happy Thanksgiving. WE

Investment Strategies for Retirement Live the Retirement You’ll Love By Kylie Gumpert
It should be an incredibly exciting time, but so many of us are completely unprepared for what we work to do our entire lives—retire! According to a 2018 study by insurance company Northwestern Mutual, one in five Americans say they have absolutely nothing saved for retirement, and one in three have less than $5,000 saved. If you don’t have enough money saved to retire, you may have to work longer, and you may not be able to fulfill retirement dreams or even live independently in the future. That definitely paints a grim picture, but there’s still hope. Even if you haven’t been saving for retirement, starting now is going to make your future a whole lot easier to manage. Why are so many Americans financially unprepared for retirement? There are several possible reasons why people don’t save. Some people prioritize paying down their current debt. Some people struggle to pay their current bills and believe they don’t make enough money to save. Some people don’t think they’ll need retirement savings. Some people aren’t saving just because their employers don’t offer a workplace retirement savings plan and they don’t know how else to get started. Some of these reasons are misconceptions, and they can be overcome. If you set aside just $20 a month from age 20 to age 67, you would end up with $80,000. That may not be enough to retire (most experts recommend around $1 million or more), but it demonstrates that saving any amount is better than not saving at all—even if it’s an amount so small that many Americans would overlook it as spare change. Most of us know that the best time to start saving is as soon as possible so that money has more time to grow in a 401(k) retirement account, an individual retirement account (IRA), a pension plan, or even as a stock investment. For those who are late to the saving game, there are often modifications that can be made, such as downsizing and eliminating expenses and bills, to ensure that retirement is a viable option down the road. Planning for retirement should include some forethought, such as how much money you think you’ll be spending (based on how much you spend now), how long you think you will live, and which saving options will produce the return you need. If you are sick or your family history makes it likely that you’ll develop an illness or disease, be sure to consider how medical bills might impact your retirement savings. Depending on your age and family status, it might also be important to consider how much marriage or children could change your savings strategy or the amount you’ll still need to save to stay on track for retirement. Getting started involves making a decision about where you’d like to save your dollars: in an employer’s 401(k) or pension plan, an IRA, a Roth IRA, stocks or bonds, or a mix of these options. Your employer’s 401(k) is often your best bet, as most employers will match up to a certain amount of whatever
16
you save (sometimes as a percentage, sometimes as a flat dollar amount). Experts recommend putting in as much as an employer will match because, at the end of the day, that’s free money. Generally, you want to put at least 10 percent of your income toward your 401(k) to reap the most reward over time. Still, there are limits to how much you can invest each year. In 2018, employees cannot invest more than $18,500 into a 401(k), while employers cannot invest more than an employee’s annual compensation. In total, these contributions cannot exceed $55,000. This is a particularly important point for older people who have not already been saving sufficiently and would like to put higher amounts of money in an account now to “catch up.” Another great reason to get started saving with your employer’s plan, no matter what kind of plan your employer offers, is that some saving is always better than no saving at all.You can always begin saving in your employer’s plan and then move your money elsewhere if you decide a different type of investment will work better for you. Pension plans are not commonly offered these days because they are seen as significantly riskier than the now-popular 401(k). With pensions, employees do not have control over investments, but their employer promises to provide a certain monthly income once the employees retire. An IRA is an option you can pursue if your employer does
www.womensedition.com
not offer a retirement savings option or if you want to save beyond the limits of your 401(k) plan. The annual contribution limit is $5,500 ($6,500 for those age 50 and older, to give them an opportunity to catch up, if necessary). Depending on your situation, a Roth IRA may be recommended because the money is invested post-tax. This means that when it comes time to take money out of the account for retirement, no tax is owed. This is unlike other retirement plans, which offer an annual tax break so that money can grow more quickly over time but require that those taxes are paid back when dollars are withdrawn. Diversity is key in investing and minimizing risk, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to be choosing individual companies to invest in. A passively managed index fund can be a great choice for retirement saving. These funds buy all the stocks in a major market index (like the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average), in the same proportion that they appear in the index. The fund then passively holds those stocks without making any attempt to trade them to improve performance. Having just one index fund may sound like you’re putting all your eggs in one basket, but you’re really not—these indexes contain all of the major companies in the United States, so you’re really investing in many different and successful companies at once. An index fund will provide the same investment return as the American market at large, so it’s a pretty solid bet. To get started with a 401(k), you’ll need to work with your employer to determine how aggressive you want your portfolio to be, what their match offer is, how long you would need to stay in the plan to receive payout, and how much money you’d like to contribute. Target-dated funds, which adjust their mix of stocks and bonds to be less aggressive as the participant ages, are a common choice and are often a reasonable place to get started saving.
To get started with an IRA or Roth IRA, you’ll need to work with a bank, a mutual fund company, or a brokerage firm to open an account. Some companies may require a certain deposit amount to get started, while others have no limit for opening an account. From there, you’ll need to figure out your investment strategy, including how much you’d like to put into your account as well as the portfolio of stocks and bonds that you’d like to purchase. You can work with a broker who can help select funds that are appropriate for your needs or lean on a “robo-investor” that will digitally form your portfolio based on how you answer questions about your age and retirement goals. You can also work with a broker or “roboinvestor” to invest in stocks or bonds outside of a 401(k) or IRA. For a fee, financial advisors can help you navigate plan or investment limits, qualifications, terms or agreements, and overall portfolio diversification so that you aren’t left alone to sort it all out. While actively managed funds won’t necessarily bring better investment returns, some expert advice can be a great asset to someone who is just starting to save for retirement, who doesn’t know much about the process, or whose investment situation is complicated. Once a year, you should check on your investments or have a meeting with your broker to make sure things are looking the way you want them to. Saving for retirement can sound like a daunting task (and $1 million can sound like a daunting number!), but the hardest part is getting started. Do yourself a favor and make yesterday the last day that you didn’t save for retirement. Call the bank, look for a financial advisor, chat with your employer, or set up an automatic withdrawal today to get started on the path toward the retirement you deserve. The Future Is Now! Bring Your Home Into the Age of Technology
By Robyn V. Powell
In less than a decade, smartphones have revolutionized our society. How we communicate, manage our finances, and access information has radically changed with the wide adoption of this powerful tool. As technology advances, the next major step forward is fully integrating it into our homes, placing the same seamless management of our home’s systems conveniently at our fingertips. There’s an exciting new trend in digital innovation underway, bringing technologies that deliver connectivity, efficiency, and energy savings. Right now is a great time to explore how transitioning to a smart home gives you a whole new level of control over your surroundings. For most of us, keeping our families safe and our homes secure is priority one. Give your loved ones enhanced protection by installing a home security system that allows doors to be locked, security systems armed, and cameras monitored from the convenience of your smartphone. Alerts sent directly to your phone let you know if anyone enters or departs the home or if any suspicious activity is detected. Video doorbells add another layer of security, allowing you to screen and record guests, check on deliveries, and receive alerts and videos on your phone when motion is detected. Investing in smart technologies can save you money, over time, while enhancing the resale value of your home. Thermostat control, for example, can result in energy bill savings of 10 to 30 percent, quickly paying for the initial equipment and installation costs. Smart systems
provide homeowners with data about their energy use, helping to optimize settings for specific conditions. Remote connectivity allows you to control and adjust the thermostat from your car or while on vacation. You can also control lights and window treatments from a touchpad in your home or from anywhere on your phone. Smart sprinklers simplify lawn and garden care and reduce water consumption. Instead of fixed timers, smart systems rely on sensors to determine watering needs and deliver the right amount of water at the right time. Reduce your water bill and check on your plants from anywhere in the world using mobile or web apps. Programmable fireplaces operate by remote, making your fireplace control more convenient and efficient. Once the room heats to a certain temperature, the fireplace turns itself off. You can enjoy the ease of changing your settings without having to leave the comfort of your sofa! ›››

One of the most revolutionary smart technologies has been the development of voice-controlled devices. Alexa, for example, is a virtual personal assistant developed by Amazon. The smart wireless speaker responds to verbal commands. Managing your calendar; controlling lights, temperature, and appliances; or updating your shopping list are just a few of the ways Alexa can streamline your life. You can ask Alexa to pre-heat the oven, let you know how much time is left in the wash cycle, or operate the remote vacuum cleaner. Managing the operation of home systems with voice control is a game changer for elderly or disabled homeowners, giving them the ability to live independently in their own homes. Alongside the evolution of ever-flatter, ever-bigger TVs, manufacturers have introduced curved-screen sets to the market. Curved sets make a striking visual in a room, but what do they add to the viewing experience? According to experts, curved screens that are 65 inches or larger provide a more immersive viewing experience, adding a cinematic quality that is similar to watching a movie at the theater. Most TVs don’t sound as good as they look, so if your goal is to heighten the cinema experience, investing in enhanced sound quality can be a great option. Streamlined sound bars mounted on the wall or a shelf directly beneath a TV can boost the sound quality and are less expensive than adding a new surround sound system. Sound bars operate by remote and contain several speakers; some even include rear speakers to give you the full surround-sound experience. Alternatively, a total surround sound system requires placing several speakers in different areas of a room to deliver room-filling, cinema-like surround sound from every direction. Having a surround sound system installed can be costly, but they can’t be beat for action movies that are best enjoyed with dynamic surround sound systems—where a subwoofer adds oomph to every explosion and viewers hear every tire squeal. Taking advantage of smart home innovations can make the management of your day-to-day life more convenient and secure. The future is already here, so bring your home along for the ride! Enjoy the many benefits of a more modern and functional living space, whether you’re at home, at work, or on vacation. Studio 27 Aesthetics Enhance Your Natural Beauty By Libby Kinder
Studio 27 Aesthetics, located in Old Colorado City, is a physiciansupervised aesthetic care studio. Owner Michael Bradburry, RN, has 35 years of nursing experience, including 20 years in the field of aesthetics. She and her staff implement the latest beauty enhancement services and live by their motto: “Integrity, Trust, and Experience.” Michael was a neonatal intensive care nurse for 25 years before she got into her current specialty. “I had the opportunity to join a medical practice that provided me with extensive training in aesthetics,” she says. “I continued with advanced training and earned yearly advanced certifications.” For office management and marketing, Michael depends on Silvana, who has worked with Michael since 2008. Studio 27 fits right in with the welcoming atmosphere and feel-good ambience of Old Colorado City. When stepping through the doors of Studio 27, clients will enjoy a friendly, relaxed boutique atmosphere rather than a clinical environment. Client Margot B. appreciates the attention to detail. “The studio is clean, and services are superior,” she reports. “I’ve been coming to Michael for years, and my skin issues and problems have been solved. I highly recommend Studio 27.” Clients can access a wide variety of services at Studio 27, including sclerotherapy (to treat spider veins in the legs), microneedling (including the plasma-rich protein facial), and medical-grade chemical peels. The focus, however, is primarily on injectables like Botox and fillers. Michael often explains the difference between these two types of injectable treatments. Botox is injected and used to improve the look of moderate to severe wrinkle lines. It relaxes the underlying muscle, softening the area being treated. Fillers, on the other hand, are used to replace volume loss under the skin. “As we age and lose fullness, skin starts to sag,” Michael says. This is a natural process—if there’s less volume underneath the skin, the skin in that area will wrinkle and sag. One nonsurgical solution to the problem of volume loss is an injectable filler. Michael typically uses the Allergan product line, as it has a variety of effective filler options. Fillers are routinely done one time per year, and Botox is injected three to four times per year. Although injections can be made more often, Michael avoids this if it’s not necessary. “I lean toward the conservative side because fillers and Botox are made to enhance our natural beauty,” Michael asserts. “My philosophy is to provide a conservative treatment, to help the client stay focused and avoid over-injecting.” Injectables available at Studio 27 include Botox, Xeomin, Juvederm (including Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella), and Kybella. Other products available include Latisse, Babe Lash, and Obagi. Client Jocelyn S. states, “Love the Studio. Michael is
24
knowledgeable and really cares about the outcome of your service. The Studio is a great environment— friendly, with a very supportive staff. I have gotten many services and go there regularly. Hands down, the best place I know! I am so grateful for the service and quality care and attention given to me and all my friends (who now also love going there). I hope you, too, will check this place out!” A complimentary consultation is offered to anyone interested in services at Studio 27. This consultation is a vital part of treatment, Michael notes, so each client understands what kind of outcomes she can expect. “Each client comes in for her consultation, and then I make a portfolio plan to educate her. This education is important so that her expectations meet the likely outcome of the treatment.” After this initial evaluation, a treatment plan is made, costs are reviewed, and a timeline is presented. Brilliant Distinctions benefits are available, as is Care Credit. For clients’ convenience, appointment bookings are typically done online. Satisfied client Jennifer B. shares her thoughts about Studio 27: “First, the service—it was awesome! She gave me a fantastic peel. Then she told me about services that may work for my skin and products that I may enjoy, but she was not pushy or salesman-like. It was kind of like a friend sharing, which I appreciated. The customer service was amazing. I really like the space and, of course, enjoy traveling to the Old Colorado City area. They will have a faithful customer in me!” Studio 27 Aesthetics is located at 2631 West Colorado Avenue, in Colorado Springs. They can be reached by phone at 719-329-0304. Their website, studio27co.com, contains a wealth of information about services, procedures, and products available in the studio. “I feel beautiful again,” says client Angel. “Thank you so much, Michael! You are the best!” Come feel beautiful at Studio 27! WE

Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend Jewelry as an Expression of Love and Style By Holly Tierney-Bedord
You’ve heard the old adage that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but why are these precious stones so special to us, often getting passed down for generations? How does something that starts out as a token of love or an expression of style become a family heirloom? Nearly as long as there have been people, there has been jewelry. Gemstones and other found objects like feathers and bone have been incorporated into jewelry-making for over 25 thousand years! As humans became more skilled, the jewelry that they created evolved, too. For more than a thousand years, we have had the technology that allows diamonds to be cut into the multi-faceted, sparkling attention-getters that we’re used to seeing today. You’ve probably heard of the four Cs (Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat) that determine the quality of a diamond. This grading system was created in the 1950s and is the modern standard for evaluating diamonds. Cut is the placement and number of tiny slices shaping the diamond. The higher the number of cuts and the more strategically and expertly placed they are, the more light the diamond will reflect, and the more the diamond will sparkle. Clarity is how transparent or opaque the diamond is. Clarity also considers spots and imperfections in the diamond. Clearer rates higher than cloudy. While white diamonds are what most of us traditionally associate with the look of a diamond, they actually come in many other colors. The brighter, deeper shades (pink, red, blue) are very rare and very expensive. The scale runs from D to Z, with D meaning colorless and Z meaning very colorful. Lastly, carat is the weight (size) of the diamond. A metric carat equals 200 milligrams. Because of the rarity of diamonds and the skill required to expertly cut them, they’re widely cherished and enduringly popular. While the four Cs are often applied to other stones, there really is no formally recognized or required system of grading the wide variety of other precious and semi-precious stones. Some of the most popular precious stones besides diamonds include sapphires, rubies, and emeralds. Rarity and beauty elevate a stone from semi-precious to precious. The different metals that stones are commonly set in also vary in rarity and value. Platinum, gold, and silver are all precious metals that are often used to make jewelry. Pure gold (24-karat) is quite soft. The gold that is used to make jewelry will have a lower karat number because it has been mixed with other, stronger metals so the beautiful gold color remains, but in a strong setting that can withstand the daily dings and bumps of life. The wonderful thing about jewelry is that there are so many different looks and price ranges. If you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, you can work
with a designer to create a piece just for you. If you’re interested in going this route, contact a custom jewelry designer to learn more. You’ll meet with the designer, talk about what you’re picturing, see samples of previous work, and offer any inspiration images you may have brought along. The designer will likely begin with some sketches before crafting the design in wax. At this point, you can still request adjustments to the design. After final approval, the designer will cast the mold in fine metal and add the gemstones. Fine jewelry endures because of the quality and value of the materials used to create it. However, just like everything else, jewelry has trends that come and go. These days, oversized statement jewelry continues to dominate runways and department stores. Layered jewelry and pieces with tassels are also big. Unique jewelry pieces made of natural objects, like wood bangles or leather accents, are popular. Customdesigned pieces are as beloved as ever. Yellow gold (as opposed to white gold) is also making a big comeback. Jewelry is special because it is very personal and yet its sentiment is so publicly expressed. It’s beautiful, and it demands to be seen. It traditionally goes along with the biggest, most meaningful moments in our lives: engagement, marriage, anniversaries, graduations, and births, as well as during professional, personal, and religious milestones. For many people, an engagement ring or wedding ring is life’s most expensive gift, and it’s a piece that is worn and admired every day. The worldwide, enduring fascination with jewelry goes back nearly as far as people do. Jewelry has always been known as a lasting way to show off personality, style, family history, and one person’s commitment to another. Good Looks
Seeing Clearly The Latest in Eyewear By Loretta McCollum
Not long ago, those of us who needed corrective eyewear were often considered clumsy, frumpy, nerdy, or awkward. Wearing glasses did nothing for one’s social life. Those weighty, burdensome “Coke bottle” lenses were continually being pushed up and creating nose craters. Fear not, my near-sighted, far-sighted, astigmatic comrades! The labels of clumsy, frumpy, nerdy, and awkward have been replaced with cool, flattering, notable, and attractive. Today’s eyewear functions as a fashion accessory. With the multitude of colors and styles available, your glasses can match your personality, your wardrobe, or both, with limitless options. Frame components are better than ever, and designers like Calvin Klein, Armani, Prada, Michael Kors, Chanel, and Coach, to name a few, produce eyewear lines. Let’s start by learning the three types of eyecare professional: optometrists, ophthalmologists, and opticians. You will most likely visit at least two of these professionals in your eyewear quest, depending on your needs. What’s the difference? An optometrist is a doctor of optometry who performs eye exams and prescribes glasses and contact lenses. Optometrists diagnose eye conditions like glaucoma and cataracts, and they can prescribe medication. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who attended medical school and then did a medical residency in the area of ophthalmology. They can perform many of the same functions as optometrists, but, unlike optometrists, they can perform eye surgeries and treat serious eye conditions. Finally, there is the optician. This individual prepares and dispenses lenses and frames. Opticians are not eye doctors, and they cannot write prescriptions, but they are the key to well-fitting, flattering frames with the correct lenses. Those Coke bottle lenses were heavy and thick because they were actually made of glass. Most of today’s lenses are plastic. They are light and thin, impact-resistant, and can correct vision better than ever before. Lenses are not one-size-fits-all! Lens choice is dependent upon several factors, including prescription and lifestyle. Many people over age 40 need multi-focal lenses (either bifocals or trifocals), but gone are the days of that telltale line in the lens. The transition is now seamless and invisible to the naked eye. Many lenses now have a scratch-resistant coating and ultraviolet protection built in. If your lenses don’t, it’s worth the extra costto add them. Even newer plastics can get scratched, and ultraviolet protection helps decrease the risk of cataracts. Anti-reflective coating is helpful for those who spend a great deal of time at a computer or who have issues with night glare. Like lenses, frames have come a long way, baby!
26
Today’s frames are typically constructed from metals, plastics, or a combination of both. Titanium lenses are lightweight, durable, corrosion-resistant, and available in many colors. Graphite frames are also lightweight and are known for both durability and flexibility, making them an excellent choice for an active lifestyle. Aluminum frames are popular with designers, and beryllium frames are a less costly alternative to titanium. Play lots of sports? Consider nylon frames. Wooden frames are also becoming popular. Modern eyewear is focused on fashion, not just function. Color trends range from bold colors like red, teal, or purple to clears, grays, and soft pastels. Bold and soft shades are often combined. Warm neutrals like honey, caramel, and coffee are in style. Traditional colors like tortoiseshell and black are constants. Frame style and shape trends are a mix of retro and contemporary, of bold and understated. Tortoiseshell cat’s eye frames are in, as are black frames (rectangular for men, round for women). Big and bold is trendy, as is transparent, light, and thin. Oversized square frames and classic aviator glasses are also fashionable. Consider your facial features when selecting frames. Wide frames flatter a full face, while thin, round frames soften the angles of a square face or shorten a long face. Angular, narrow frames complement the soft features of a round face, and bottom-heavy frames balance a heart-shaped face. The oval face is fortunate to look good in just about any frame. After you’ve chosen the ideal frames, you want to make sure they fit properly. This is where opticians really shine. They help with frame selection, but it’s also their role to ensure that your glasses fit comfortably. Here are some guidelines: The temple of the frame should go straight back, touching just before the ear, not along the side of the head. The stem should be long enough to reach well behind the ear. All (or nearly all) of the frame should touch both sides of the nose, with no gaps. Work with your optician, and your glasses will fit like a glove. The College Pharmacy Difference Custom Compounding Since 1974 By Brenda Gracely
Did you know that 30 to 40 million prescriptions are custom-compounded each year? Patients have different health and wellness needs, and massproduced medications don’t work for everybody. For over 40 years, College Pharmacy has been meeting patients’ needs by providing high quality custom compounding and outstanding customer service. Their goal is to promote patients’ health and wellness success. The basis of the compounding profession has always been the triad of the patient-health care providerpharmacist relationship—that is, the patient’s health needs are identified by the health care provider, who chooses a treatment regimen that may include medication prepared by the pharmacist. In many cases, custom compounding can be the best choice. For example, if the prescribed medication has been discontinued; if the patient is allergic to a preservative, dye, or binder used in the mass-produced version of the medication; if a non-standard dose is needed; or if the medication is only readily available in a form that the patient can’t tolerate— these are some of the many problems that College
Pharmacy solves with their custom compounding services. The ingredients in compounded medications meet strict guidelines to ensure safety and purity. A custom compound is prepared from pure, pharmaceutical-grade raw materials in accordance with a physician’s prescription and is based on an individual patient’s needs. Custom compounding prescriptions require a trained staff of pharmacists and technicians who use specialized equipment and processes. That’s just what you’ll find at College Pharmacy. Among the most popular solutions that College Pharmacy offers is help with the unpleasant symptoms of menopause. Such symptoms may include insomnia, depression, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and fatigue.

If you experience symptoms that might be related to hormone imbalance, start the journey to relief with College Pharmacy’s Hormone Self-Assessment Questionnaire. It’s a useful tool to gauge how severe your hormonal symptoms are. The next step is a free consultation with a pharmacist who specializes in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Together, you can review your self-assessment and discuss your options. You may then receive a personalized recommendation for BHRT, which can be given to you or faxed directly to your health care provider. (A prescription from a licensed healthcare practitioner is required for all hormone prescriptions.) Hormones regulate so many of our body functions, and it’s important to maintain the correct amount of each one. Blood testing to determine current hormone levels can be ordered through your doctor. The consulting pharmacist will coordinate with your health care provider and may suggest one of College Pharmacy’s newest offerings, the Menopause Method, founded by Daved Rosensweet, MD. “From the moment we are born, we use hormones for practically every critical function,” says Dr. Rosensweet in a message on the Menopause Method website. “Our brains love them and use them constantly, keeping us alert, energetic, and capable of feeling joy. Hormones play a role in muscle production and bone maintenance. Everything from bladder strength to proper weight, from easy sleep to healthy skin, is affected.” Every woman’s hormonal balance is specific to her body, and an imbalance in hormones can affect many different aspects of her life. Training doctors to help each woman find her proper balance is Dr. Rosensweet’s primary mission. The Menopause Method is designed for doctors currently in active practice. It is a comprehensive education
and medical practice menopause treatment system. It is everything your physician needs to accurately determine dosages and to test for and prescribe bioidentical hormones in an organic base. Vanessa Vangen is the marketing coordinator at College Pharmacy. “There are about 20 providers who have taken training with Dr. Rosensweet and are using his method,” she says. College Pharmacy is compiling a list of local providers so they can connect them with their patients. “We have everything we need and are ready to fill prescriptions for this topical BHRT using Dr. Rosensweet’s Menopause Method.” For more information about the Menopause Method, visit menopausemethod.com. Men can experience hormonal imbalance associated with things like prostate health, erectile dysfunction, and cardiac health. College Pharmacy can help by providing compounded therapies to mitigate symptoms and discomfort associated with these health issues. Beyond hormone therapy, College Pharmacy can help with many other issues. They are the only pharmacy in Colorado Springs to offer Sarcotropin IPA, a medical food that addresses sarcopenia, a degenerative loss of skeletal muscle related to aging. They provide environmental medicine, and chelation therapy formulations. Their personalized therapies address autism spectrum disorders, sensitivity to certain formulations, age management and aesthetic medicine formulations, and pain management. They can even recreate some discontinued medications and do veterinary compounding. If you need a custom medication, get in touch with College Pharmacy. They’ll find a way to meet your needs. The pharmacy is located at 3505 Austin Bluffs Parkway, Suite 101, in Colorado Springs. Call them at 719-262-0022 or find them online at collegepharmacy.com. WE

spiritually! That is a great reason to go on a rampage of appreciation. The challenge, for some of us, is that we have becomes so accustomed to feeling bad that we don’t even know where to begin. We have become so angry, depressed, fearful, or anxious that we struggle to find anything in our lives that we can truly be grateful for.
“Appreciation of what we have is at least one-half of the true way of life.” —Samuel F. Clarke Appreciation is a very powerful emotion. Think about this. It is impossible to stay in a negative place when we make the decision to focus on appreciation. Anger, depression, fearfulness, anxiety—they cannot stay with us if we decide to shift our attention to appreciation. If we appreciate something—anything—it’s like a “quick fix” to all that ails us! “One of life’s gifts is that each of us, no matter how tired and downtrodden, finds reasons for thankfulness: for the crops carried in from the fields and the grapes from the vineyard.” —J. “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” —Henry David Thoreau Let’s begin by being grateful to the stream of pure positive energy for handling so much of what makes our lives possible. It makes certain that the sun rises in the morning and that the Earth stays in its perfect orbit in the Universe. What this basic appreciation will do is shift our energies. It will provide us with a new starting point in our day. Next will come more thoughts of things to appreciate. It has to happen—it’s the Law of Attraction—the most powerful law in the Universe. The more we put our attention towards something, the bigger it will get. We will find ourselves moving from the basics to more specific experiences/things we are thankful for. Our health. Our relationships. Our freedom. Then, we’ll be on a roll. We will find that it gets easier to stay in this place of appreciativeness and it feels great to be there. What we will find is that we experience every day as Thanksgiving day! WE

I Am Thankful For… The Lessons Left Behind For the past few weeks, I’ve been going through boxes of stuff that’s been in storage for years. I found some real gems! Among these were savings certificates issued by the USPS in 1939, which probably have more value historically than monetarily. Of more personal interest were guest books and sympathy cards from the funerals of family members. The penmanship in these guest books and cards is outstanding! The lesson: It’s a shame that handwriting doesn’t receive the attention in school that it once did. Write more legibly! The most exciting find was a notebook that belonged to my husband’s maternal grandfather. Of great interest was a letter Grandpa wrote to Grandma on first starting his job with the Railway Postal Service. “Today we traveled from Schuyler to Omaha…eight hours. I had to spend $10.00 for a suit…three pieces because I need a vest. There’ll be expenses for room and board at overnight stops. I’ll deposit my pay and send you the receipt.” The real gem was a typed sheet with the lineage of his great-great-grandfather, all the way back to the mid 1700s. His grandfather was the 14th of 15 children. Now we have definite roots for the Adams side of the family. The lesson: Don’t just throw stuff away…go through it! In the collection from Daddy’s funeral, I recognized a lot of the names. I was 20 when he died and was just getting to know him as an adult. The people who took time to attend his funeral and send cards attested to the respect his coworkers held for him. I’ve

learned more about him over the years as my husband worked with some of the same people. Daddy’s legacy: Be yourself. Treat others as you want to be treated. My younger brother, Doug, died 20 years later at age 34, doing one of the things he loved—mountain climbing. D lived his life doing the things he loved because he enjoyed them, not because others thought he should. He followed his bliss! Mama’s collection included condolences from people who ranged in age from their 20s (not counting her grandchildren) to those in their 80s and 90s (Mama was nearly 104 when she died after living a full life). That age range was there because her sense of curiosity made her interested in everything…and interesting to everyone. She always stayed in touch with the child within. To my husband, people were important because they were people, not because of their position or how much money they had. His legacy is his kindness and helpfulness to others. I’m thankful for the people who have gone before and for those who took the time to pay their respects. I’m doubly thankful for the lessons they left behind. I’m also thankful to all of you who read my ramblings. What are you thankful for? Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Putting Art in Fine Jewelry One Story at a Time
By Lisa Boness
At All That Glitters Fine Jewelry Gallery, a premier Colorado Springs independent jeweler, the art and science of crafting heirloom jewelry come together to create pieces unique to each wearer. The owner Cretee Nemmer has been responsible for the direction of this sucessful small business for over three decades. She and her team of artisans and goldsmiths don’t just make jewelry—they work with their clients to uncover the story to be told through jewelry. “There is always a reason to celebrate something,” Cretee believes, and if you’re going to celebrate with jewelry, the piece ought to tell that story. All That Glitters offers expertise and a welcoming, comfortable environment where clients can discover ways to celebrate through jewelry. Mark Kirkland and Carol Falls are fine jewelry consultants and custom jewelry designers at All That Glitters, and they believe that Cretee has earned a reputation built on integrity and respect. “Cretee brings life, fun, and excitement to the store. This is a labor of love for her,” Mark shares. One of the unique aspects of Cretee’s ownership is her love of people—she sees her clients as friends. It’s easier to develop friendships with clients who are repeat customers, and that’s what they have at All That Glitters. Cretee and Mark note that many of their clients return to build on collections they started or to take care of their entire gift-buying needs, year after year. The trust built through this type of loyalty is a reflection of Cretee’s integrity as the owner, Mark points out. Katy, a customer who purchased her engagement ring and many gifts from All That Glitters, says, “If you are looking for quality jewelry that you won’t find anywhere else, you’ve got to stop by. The completely unique offerings and amazing customer service are what keep me coming back.” At All That Glitters, they use advanced jewelrymaking technology, but they never lose sight of the art of designing jewelry. Cretee and the design team keep the focus on the piece…and on the person who will wear it. “We are creating heirloom pieces; we like to do things that tell people’s stories,” Cretee states. Mark adds, “We are looking at the whole person, the metal, and the stone. The piece needs to be perfect for that particular person and for that person’s lifestyle.” The jewelry made and displayed at All That Glitters features many different options in terms of materials and designs built from such metals as white, yellow, and rose gold and sterling silver. That’s part of Cretee’s desire to do what is right for each client. “There is no design or piece of jewelry too small or too big.” The wide variety in designs and prices, as well as the full

range of services and products available, are on display at their location on West Colorado Avenue and on their website, myatgonline.com. Cretee and Mark enjoy sharing about the art and science that go into each piece. They both believe that clients benefit from knowing as much about their jewelry as they wish to learn. Mark describes this approach as one of “guiding the client, not selling at them.” In addition to the custom work that is done inhouse, All That Glitters also sells jewelry made by independent designers who are carefully selected. The care in curating a selection that meets Cretee’s standards is obvious. Cretee’s offerings include the exclusive Mountain Band Collection by Steven Powell McHone, which features famous mountain ranges and animals found in Colorado. The independent jewelry designers featured at All That Glitters are also chosen for meeting the quality and craftsmanship standards that Cretee and her in-house designers and goldsmiths put into their custom designs. To Cretee, jewelry is a very personal art form, and she wants each client’s jewelry to make the statement that the client wants it to make. She finds her purpose in the relationships she forms with each person who visits. This connection to the community she serves supports the core mission of All That Glitters: to help people find or design the jewelry that tells their story. Cretee speaks as warmly about the generations of families she has served as she does about their firsttime clients. “If we do things right, everything else takes care of itself,” Mark concludes. When you are ready to commemorate your story with a custom piece that is unique and extraordinary from these national and international award-winning designers, give All That Glitters a call at 719-475-7160. You can also stop by the store on 2616 West Colorado Avenue, Suite 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, or from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. WE

Chiropractic and Acupuncture Great Additions to Healthy Living By Leslie Byrne
We all have a list of our regularly scheduled health care appointments: physical exam, flu shot, dental cleaning, eye exam, etc. Have you considered adding chiropractic care or acupuncture to that list? If not, you should learn more about the benefits of each discipline. Chiropractic care treats the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. The name “chiropractic” comes from the Greek, meaning,“to be done by hand.” People may seek chiropractic treatment for problems like back pain, neck pain, and headaches, but they may also continue treatment for overall improved wellness. Chiropractic, which consists of hands-on, drug-free methods, can provide health benefits for people of all ages, even infants and children. The list of benefits of chiropractic treatment is long. The most commonly cited benefits include lowering blood pressure, decreasing the progression of scoliosis (when combined with physical therapy), reducing neck and lower back pain, reducing sciatica pain, reducing the inflammation that causes joint pain and other conditions, and reducing tension and migraine pain. Many of the conditions that can be improved with chiropractic care are chronic pain conditions. Any treatment that reduces chronic pain lowers the patient’s risk of over-medication and potential addiction to pain medications. Many sports teams also encourage their athletes to seek chiropractic care as part of their health routine. Chiropractic care isn’t just for adults. In fact, many families take their children, including infants, to chiropractors. The most common reasons that parents seek chiropractic care for children are to promote proper growth and development of the musculoskeletal system and to reduce ear infections, colic, constipation, and allergies. Consult with your child’s pediatrician and meet with a chiropractor to learn more about the benefits of treating children. If you decide to incorporate chiropractic care into your health routine, you will find that there are several different techniques in existence. You should ask about the treatment process with the chiropractor before your first adjustment. One of the most common methods of treatment is the diversified technique. The main purpose of the diversified technique is to restore motion and align the spine and the extremities. The chiropractor uses hands-on thrusts to specific points on the body to restore proper alignment. Similar to the diversified technique is the Gonstead technique. This involves hands-on adjustment to the low back or pelvis and uses quick manipulation movements while patients lie on their side. It is used to reduce pain and stiffness. The activator technique is when the chiropractor uses handheld instruments; this technique is often used on older patients. Chiropractors may also use the Thompson technique, sometimes known as the drop table technique. With this technique, the patient is
face down on a table designed to drop a little when the doctor applies a quick thrust to the spine to make the adjustment. This is an advantage for patients who are difficult to move or are in a lot of pain. Acupuncture is an ancient method of healing that started during the Stone Age, when sharp tools and stones were used to puncture and drain abscesses. The basis of modern acupuncture started in China in the 6th century. Acupuncture uses sharp, thin needles that are inserted at very specific points on the body to improve the body’s functions and promote self-healing. Acupuncturists are required to be licensed, so do not be afraid to ask for that information. Many chiropractors are also trained in acupuncture; if so, the chiropractor is also required to hold an acupuncture license. On the first visit, an acupuncturist will ask about your health history. The acupuncturist will feel your pulse and may have you perform various body movements, depending on the health concerns you report. When it comes to inserting the needles, most people feel very little discomfort or none at all. The needles are left in for five to 30 minutes, and it can be a very relaxing experience. To treat chronic conditions, you may need to have regular sessions for several months. Acute conditions may resolve after only about eight to 10 visits. A great deal of research has been done on acupuncture, and it is known to improve several conditions, including back and neck pain, chemotherapy-induced nausea, migraine headaches, anxiety, osteoarthritis, and inflammation. This year, when you are scheduling your annual medical and health exams, add a visit to a chiropractor or acupuncturist. Chiropractic treatment and acupuncture can help reduce pain and help people avoid many types of long-term medical care. Also consider regular chiropractic adjustments as well as acupuncture to improve overall health and wellness and quality of life. Eating Disorders Symptoms, Treatments, and Recovery
By Connie Keck
Eating disorders are serious conditions related to persistent eating behaviors that negatively impact a person’s health. Eating disorders are complex and can result from an interaction of biological and genetic influences, temperamental and personality factors, behavioral tendencies, and environmental risks. Eating disorders affect all aspects of the human experience: psychological, medical, nutritional, physical, and relational. The most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and bingeeating disorder. Anorexia nervosa, often shortened to anorexia, is a potentially life-threatening eating disorder. People with anorexia use extreme efforts to control their weight and shape, and this can interfere with their health and life activities. A person may excessively limit calories or use other aggressive methods to lose weight. Some people may engage in excessive exercise, consume laxatives or diet aids, or vomit after eating. Efforts to lose weight even when underweight can cause severe health problems, up to and including deadly starvation. Bulimia nervosa, commonly called bulimia, is also a serious and potentially life-threatening eating disorder. With bulimia, people have episodes of bingeing and purging that involve feeling a lack of control over their eating. During an episode, an excessive amount of food is consumed over a short amount of time, after which the person may force vomiting or use laxatives to get rid of the calories. People with bulimia are often preoccupied with weight gain and body shape, and
they may judge themselves harshly for their perceived flaws. Binge-eating disorders include the bingeing episodes of bulimia but often do not include the purging. People who struggle with a binge-eating disorder regularly eat too much food and feel a lack of control over eating. They may eat quickly or eat more food than intended, even when they do not feel hungry, or they may continue to eat even long after they are uncomfortably full. These people may feel disgusted by or ashamed of their behavior. Embarrassment can lead to eating alone or hiding their bingeing. Episodes of bingeing usually occur at least once a week. A person with a binge-eating disorder can be of normal weight or can be overweight or obese. Emotional and psychological problems such as low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety may contribute to an eating disorder. Trauma and family discord can contribute to one of these eating disorders, as well. Though they are based in food and eating behaviors, eating disorders are essentially efforts by the person to exert control over something. Some people may have genes that leave them more vulnerable to eating disorders. Your chances of having an eating disorder rise if you

have a sibling or parent who suffers or has suffered from the same condition. Images in the media and peer pressure will often reinforce a negative body image. In Western culture, this type of pressure to be thin is especially hard on young girls. No simple cure exists for eating disorders, but treatment is available, and recovery is possible. Through a combination of therapy, nutritional education, and medical treatment, the symptoms of an eating disorder can often be managed or eliminated. Unfortunately, only one in 10 people with an eating disorder receives treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment significantly increase the chances of recovery. Psychotherapy can help sufferers to explore the causes and thought processes behind the eating disorder. It may also help to teach ways to cope with stress and other problem-solving techniques. It can help with the treatment of other existing mental disorders, like depression or anxiety. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a very structured program that encourages patients to change their patterns of thinking and behavior. It can be done individually or in a group setting. CBT is frequently combined with other therapy treatment options. Nutritional counseling is an essential component of eating disorder treatment. An eating disorder distorts the person’s perceptions of a healthy diet. Nutritional counselors can help people form eating plans that will allow them to maintain a healthy weight. Dieticians can help instill normal eating habits. Medically assisted treatment may be needed, especially if a patient is extremely underweight at the start of treatment. Chronic anorexia may damage the heart, cause low blood pressure, or lead to organ failure. An evaluation and continuing treatment by a medical doctor is essential. Medications may be used to help curb urges or lessen obsessive thoughts about food, exercise, or body image. In severe cases, residential eating disorder centers may also be helpful because patients can access the medical and psychological treatment they need in a safe and supportive environment. Managing an eating disorder can be a long-term challenge, but recovery is very possible. If you or someone you love needs help with an eating disorder, contact your doctor right away to get in touch with the professionals who can help you get a treatment plan in place. Garage Makeover Clean Out Your Clutter By Anne Yankus
It’s the last gasp of reasonable weather before true winter hits! That means it’s the perfect time to clean up and get your garage organized for all those projects you’ll want room for over the winter (not to mention the room you’ll need to park your car inside, out of the snow and ice). Now, the procrastinator in you is probably wondering, “Do I really need to have a visually appealing, well-organized garage? After all, it’s not like it’s the living room.” Here’s my answer: Of course you do! There are many reasons to clean up your garage, such as freeing up floor space, having more versatility for storage, and decreasing the likelihood of adding more clutter over time. A great place to start when creating an organization system for your garage is to draft a floor plan. This doesn’t need to be fancy; it just needs to be to scale. When planning, you’ll want to keep the floor as clear as possible, as this will make the space safer to walk through or work in. You can accomplish this by utilizing any combination of the many kinds of freestanding cabinets, pegboards and hooks, or wall-mounted shelving units to store your stuff. Now that you’ve got room to park your car, you can use the rest of your newly available garage space for whatever you want—tool and garden equipment storage, extra refrigerator, or a small workshop. Even if building is not your favorite hobby, some space to work in the garage can be a great asset when you’re working on small home improvement or gardening projects. Make sure to select a work bench that can withstand the weight and abuse from any tools you plan to use on it. After that, you’ll probably want a tool chest for all of your small tools and equipment. (Perhaps a rolling tool chest is on someone’s holiday gift list?) Other things to consider are the placement of electrical outlets and whether you have adequate lighting, heating, and cooling to work. To ensure that you have proper lighting in your garage, you’ll want to replace the old bulbs with some high-efficiency fluorescent or LED bulbs. If your old porcelain sockets are chipped or broken, an electrician can replace them for you. Once your garage is all cleared out, you can also add to the value of your home by making your garage more visually appealing with a new floor coating, an upgraded garage door, and a top-of-the-line garage door opener. There are many options to improve your garage flooring. One of the most popular choices is epoxy coating. It is known for its durable finish, which is resistant to chips, impacts, and stains. Epoxy is also a great choice for its aesthetic variety and its ability to cover existing cracks. Polished concrete can also seem like an attractive option, and it certainly does look beautiful. However, it is not recommended if you’re
38
planning on using the garage space for a workshop, as polished concrete is vulnerable to chemicals such as solvent, gasoline, and acids. A polished concrete floor will also require a lot of maintenance if you plan to park your regular, everyday use car on it. Some other options for garage floors are interlocking tiles (made of heavyduty vinyl or rubber), roll-out vinyl, peel-and-stick tiles, or paint. The next item on your garage makeover list should be the door. A plain old door is fine so long as it’s in good shape and functions well. If you really want to punch up your curb appeal, consider an attractive new door that specifically complements the style of your home. The most popular styles are traditional garage doors (which can be specialordered to match any popular home style), carriage doors (which replicate the style of old carriage houses), raised-panel doors, and contemporarystyle doors. New doors can be made with glass, steel, fiberglass, vinyl, or solid wood. Depending on your budget and the style of your house, you should have a number of options to choose from. Traditional-style doors come with the now-standard roll-up mechanism, which can be installed with a custom automated opener or can be retrofitted after installation. If you want to go a step above, new hightech models are now available. There are models with back-up batteries that will keep your garage door going even when the power goes out, as well as models that can open or shut via your smartphone. Don’t wait until the snow flies and you’re stuck parking in the driveway, scraping off your windshield every morning. Get started on a fantastic garage makeover! Positive Perspective
Have a Little Faith Don’t Let Fear Hold You Back “If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn’t it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?” —Unknown I don’t know…I was just wondering. It may not make sense to wonder in this way, but you can’t be creative if you put limits on your wondering. I don’t mind if I am wrong or if anyone thinks that is a silly question. It’s for fun, for creativeness. I like to wonder about things; it helps me grow and continue to be creative. I like to explore; it gives me courage. I like to take risks; it gives me confidence. “Confidence comes not from always being right, but from not fearing to be wrong.” —Peter T. McIntyre Some people seem afraid to stretch their imaginations, to take a few risks. Perhaps they think they are a little too old to be risking what they have gained. Don’t be afraid to keep your faith in the things you believed as you were growing up. You challenged things, you took risks, you stepped into the arena and participated, knowing that you could fail. Don’t stop now, because you also knew you could succeed. Have a little faith.

“You block your dream when you allow your fear to grow bigger than your faith.” —Mary Manin Morrissey Many of my acquaintances seem to be growing more fearful as they age. It seems so silly. In some structured ways, they talk about having faith, and practicing their faith, but they really seem to have no real faith at all. They want to protect what they have but this is precisely what causes them to die so young—they stop living! Don’t go quietly into the day and night…into some meager, carefully measured and managed existence. Make some noise (people might think you’re singing), jump around a lot (people might think your dancing), have some fun (people might also think you’re crazy). Who cares? Don’t wake up and do the minimum daily requirement. Do brave new things, stretch yourself, have more fun and excitement. Don’t let fear hold you back. “Fear is a darkroom where negatives develop.” —Usman B. Asif Are you developing negatives in the darkroom of your imagination? Have a little faith…faith that the forces of the universe are working with you, the universe is in order, and you are in your perfect place in the universe. Have a little faith and a lot of love, laughter, and fun. WE
