Editor’s Notes
The Healing Power of a Smile October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The truth is, most of us are well aware—some of us are too aware—of breast cancer and its effects on our lives and the lives of those we love. Progress is always being made toward better diagnosis and treatment, but we still feel helpless. It certainly doesn’t seem like anything to smile about. Here’s a thought, though: Use the power of your smile. It’s proven that a smile is healing. It produces endorphins that have an analgesic effect. Smiles lower blood pressure, help relieve pain, strengthen the immune system, and improve relationships, to name a few of the many benefits. Don’t forget—smiles are also fat-free, are readily available, and enhance our appearance. Pretty powerful, don’t you think? We don’t see others’ faces or make eye contact as often as we should, as we are all busy tending to our phones and other electronic devices. Honestly, I’m not sure I could survive without my cell phone and electronics, but I definitely couldn’t survive without seeing or sharing a smile every day. When someone smiles at me, it lifts my spirits. Making eye contact and smiling at a stranger reminds me that I am a part of something bigger. Smiles connect us to one another for a fleeting moment. It may seem trivial, but perhaps your smile can change someone’s mood or outlook on life. It may ease pain or soften grief, if only for a moment. It may even prevent someone from making a poor decision. Our mail room, TMR, gave us a calendar with a George Eliot quote that reads, “What do we live for, if not to make life less difficult for each other?” Perhaps your smile can make life less difficult for someone. Maybe it can turn the tide and be the healing someone needs just to get through today. Maybe the mood that you improve will be your own! Try smiling right now. Did you notice that you relaxed a little? The simple act of putting a smile on your face can improve your well-being in an instant. There are two people in my life who always make me smile, and they have a special event I want to recognize. My son and his beautiful wife will celebrate their second wedding anniversary this month. Happy anniversary, Michael and Valerie! I love you and your powerful smiling faces! Until next month…

Top Runway Dressing Moments Fall and Winter 2018 By Holly Bell
What is the simplest and quickest way to look pulled-together from head to toe? You won’t find a better solution than the one-piece practicality of the dress! If it’s been awhile since you’ve tried on dresses, you need to go for it this fall. Today’s shapes are so easy and so varied, everyone can find a style that fits and flatters. The shapes range from body-conscious to body-skimming to the ease of a fit and flare or even the wonderfully modified tent shape. The fabrics are easy to care for and are full of stretch for packability and comfort that looks great from dawn to dark. Add some leggings and pull on some tall boots, and you will be warm and comfortable—not to mention fashionable and professional! Designers are having fun this year with patterns and vibrant colors. Head-to-toe red makes an empowering statement and definitely turns heads! Bold animal prints like leopard, tiger, and zebra are here to stay in many intonations. They’re best worn with little adornment. Remember to keep it simple when choosing to wear an animal print—the print says it all, so it’s virtually a throw-on-and-go look. You’ll be able to find animal prints in your favorite color, no matter what your favorite color is. Fabulous in red leopard, Tom Ford’s ensemble was the hit of the fall runway in contrast to the sheer looks of last summer. Some designers have opted for a more modest look for fall. High necklines and longer lengths prevail throughout the season, which is good news for those of us who are cold-blooded or prefer a more modest look. Just because you aren’t showing much skin, that doesn’t mean you can’t shine—high-shine fabrics are key this season. Shiny silver and other glossy materials like multi-toned metallics are offering an exciting, edgy element. Fall florals are also blossoming on the runway and offer an interesting juxtaposition when worn with a faux fur jacket. Menswear-inspired tailoring will be important this year. One of my favorite looks is a tweed jacket worn over a dress. Adding a bit of swagger, tweed is surprisingly versatile and works with most other patterns and most any color. Usually black or brown with flecks of color in between, tweed seems to pick up whatever color you are wearing with it. This year, classic tweed will be bringing a chic and tasteful touch to skirts, jackets, coats, and dresses. Other Savile Row fabrics such as herringbone, plaids, and checks also add a touch of sophistication to this year’s fall collections. If you’re feeling a little daring, try layering and mixing these patterns together, along with a solid tone. You might be surprised! It can work really well and look totally new and innovative. Fringe was hot a couple of years ago, and it is back in a big way. It has a luxurious, more refined look this time around (rather than the bohemian feel of the past). Fringed dresses reminiscent of the 1920s will be a fun option. Fashion

influencers will be wearing fringe, ties, and narrow scarves dangling from their waistlines this year. Part of the fringe rage is a decidedly western influence in fall fashion. Along with the fringe, western details such as flapped pockets and cowboy prints will sneak into dresses, tops, and jackets. If you’re going to go this route, remember that a little touch of the west goes a long way; be frugal with this trend so you don’t overdo it. Leather dresses will be dominating this fall and winter. If you’re picturing black leather, forget about it! Leather was served up in butterscotch and lime green at fashion shows this fall. Warm, supple, and surprisingly forgiving, a leather dress would be a great option to add to your fall wardrobe. For an impressive fashionista look that would be appropriate for almost any occasion, try topping that leather dress with a tailored tweed jacket. In the world of fashion, every new season takes flashes from the past for inspiration. In 2018, we are taking cues (gentle cues!) from the 1980s. Shoulders are looking a little more assertive; color-blocking is making a return. Belts are landing up around the waist rather than slung around the hips, and the belts are coming in both narrow and wide styles. The most important cue from the designers this year is timeless wearability. Classic fabrics that we love will appear this fall and winter to comfort us with their ease and familiarity. Worn with a few new twists but always with an eye toward comfort, there is nothing not to like about this year’s fall fashions— especially the ubiquitous favorite dress! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

HQA Fertility Centers High-Quality, Affordable Infertility Treatment By Brenda Gracely
“HQA Fertility Centers make infertility treatment accessible, affordable, and achievable; and it’s right here in your backyard,” explains Eric Hughes, HQA’s Marketing Director. “We do more than provide treatments—we provide an experience focused on the goal of One Healthy Baby.” To achieve their trademark goal, HQA brings different types of reproductive specialists into one group. Whether your obstacle is infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss, or you’re interested in exploring other family-building options such as donor egg, donor sperm, or gestational carrier/surrogacy, HQA will customize your fertility treatment utilizing their partner network and the latest techniques in reproductive care. Their fees include the services surrounding the third month of treatment, which are critical to achieving the goal of One Healthy Baby. “HQA is changing the landscape by driving down the cost,” says Tony Bevill, the Executive Director of Business Development for HQA. “HQA is the first fertility center in the country to offer the highest quality technology and medicine available for a dramatically lower fee.” Infertility is a very common condition; in fact, 40 percent of couples have infertility issues. Whether the infertility issue lies with the female partner or the male partner (or both), there are solutions to treat it. HQA has been in the Colorado Springs community for the past 20 years and has been especially connected with the military, presenting at military orientations and helping with PTSD issues. HQA works with couples of all sexual orientations as well as single individuals looking to start a family. Their board-certified reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialists have over 20 years’ experience designing and managing the in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle and have pioneered state-of-the-art laboratories and IVF protocols for fertility treatment. Paul C. Magarelli, MD, PhD, is a board-certified Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) Specialist and has practiced in Colorado since 1998. He is Medical Director of HQA Fertility Centers in both Colorado Springs and Denver. Kimberly Hayes, MD, FACOG, is a specially trained Gynecologist. She earned her medical degree at University of Missouri–Columbia and has an extensive background in advanced gynecology. Her specialties include hysteroscopy and laparoscopic surgery. Denise Walinsky, MD, FACOG, is also a specially trained Gynecologist. She attended medical school in Philadelphia, where she did research in reproductive endocrinology. She completed her OB-GYN residency in Baltimore and taught residents there for five years before moving to New Mexico, where she was a Laparoscopic Gynecologic Surgery Specialist for over 10 years. She is happy to return to assisting

patients with fertility challenges. HQA has consistently achieved high IVF pregnancy rates. HQA IVF procedures are freeze-all embryo transfer (FET) cycles only, which are scientifically proven to improve reproductive outcomes. Pre-implantation genetic screening (PGS) increases the chance of a healthy pregnancy for all age groups, reduces the likelihood of miscarriage, and allows for ultrasoundguided single embryo transfer. This avoids the added health complications of twin or triplet pregnancies and strives instead for HQA’s trademark goal: One Healthy Baby. HQA offers state-of-the-industry services and testing and applies new protocols that incorporate Western and Eastern medicine. Their acupuncture consortium was developed with assistance from Dr. Diane Cridennda, who has a master’s degree in traditional Chinese medicine. She practices in Colorado Springs as a Licensed Acupuncturist and Chinese Herbologist at East Winds Acupuncture (eastwindsacupuncture.com). Dr. Magarelli and Dr. Cridennda have been conducting research that combines high-tech fertility treatments with acupuncture, creating the Cridennda Magarelli Acupuncture Protocol (CMAP), which has started a revolution in IVF care. Their research demonstrates that combining acupuncture with an IVF care program results in improved pregnancy rates, reduced miscarriage rates, fewer ectopic pregnancies, and more healthy babies. “Our unique model of East meets West gives you the best possible treatments, unique to your specific needs,” explains Dr. Cridennda. “We are able to see the Chinese medicine view of your pattern of disharmony as well as the Western diagnosis. The combination will give you the best overall care.” “Mother Nature is a difficult dance partner,” Eric points out. “Infertility exists, it is a real condition, and it is highly treatable.” It’s important to acknowledge that infertility is a very difficult emotional journey, he says. “HQA offers clinical consultations that include educational processes, counseling, and psychological screening. Maybe you think you can’t do it, but you can! There is help available on almost any budget.” To learn more about HQA Fertility Centers, please call 719-475-2229 to make an appointment for a consultation. In addition to the Colorado Springs location, there is also a Denver Metro location in Castle Rock, and a Lone Tree location will open by the end of the year. Massage Getting the Relief You Knead By Holly Tierney-Bedord
Until you’ve lived with physical pain, you don’t know how fortunate you were to have once been pain-free. Luckily, one of the most effective and relaxing ways to feel better has been around for millennia— the practice of massage therapy. “The Yellow Emperor’s Classic Book of Internal Medicine” was written in China nearly 5,000 years ago, and it is still considered the definitive teaching guide of modern massage, acupuncture, acupressure, and herbology. Over the centuries, massage has become common all over the world. Massage is good for both mind and body. It has been proven effective in reducing pain, increasing circulation, helping injured muscles heal, lowering blood pressure and heart rate, and reducing stress. These results are documented in many studies, including a study on Swedish massage therapy that was published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2010. It showed that just a single session of Swedish massage increased circulating lymphocytes and decreased interleukin levels, suggesting that massage has a role to play in the management of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. There are many varieties of massage, from deep tissue to hot stone and everything in between. Western massage tends to be more about direct contact with muscles, whereas Eastern massage techniques often incorporate energy work into the massage. It’s helpful to know what to expect if you partake in some of the more popular massage options out there. Swedish massage, sports massage, and deep tissue massage are all Western massage therapy techniques. These methods use a variety of deep and light strokes, kneading, percussion-like motions, and friction to address pain, and they can be very effective if you’re healing from an injury. Deep tissue massage tends to be more intense than Swedish massage. Sports massage tends to focus primarily on an area of injury that needs attention. Lotion or oil is used in all three methods, which means you can expect to disrobe for these styles of massage. If you’re stressed and new to massage, a Swedish massage is a great starting point. Aromatherapy massage is usually some version of a deep tissue massage with the addition of fragrant essential oils, further promoting relaxation and wellbeing. Hot stone massage (during which heated stones are placed on the skin) is great for loosening muscles and the tension within them. You can also plan to disrobe for this style of massage, in order to feel the full benefits of the hot stones. Shiatsu massage stimulates acupressure points on the body, improving energy flow, balance, stress-related problems, and conditions like insomnia and sciatica. Since this method of massage does not use lotion or oil, wearing loose clothing is recommended. Thai massage is a bit like guided yoga, with the instructor gently moving your body into different poses. Loose clothing is
recommended for this style of massage, as well. Pregnancy massage focuses on an expectant mother’s back pain and swollen ankles, typically using a Western approach of hands-on, gentle kneading. (If you’re wondering how a pregnant woman can lie on her stomach on a massage table—these tables are specially designed to accommodate a pregnant belly.) Reflexology is all about your feet (and, sometimes, your hands and ears), which many people believe are like tiny maps of what’s happening throughout the entire body. A reflexologist will address everything from digestive problems to migraines by massaging the particular place on the feet, hands, or ears that corresponds to whatever issues are ailing you. Lymphatic massage uses gentle pressure to remove waste fluids from damaged lymph nodes. While most massage therapy techniques stimulate muscles, this technique’s primary goal is to detoxify the body. If you’ve never gotten a massage before, don’t be afraid to call ahead and ask what the experience will be like. Your questions might seem silly to you, but massage therapists likely hear them all the time and will be happy to answer them. It makes sense to be sure that your needs align with the massage technique that you choose. A deep tissue massage, for instance, is great for many people, but it may not be right for someone with lymphedema. You’ll have a better experience if you do a little homework ahead of time. Whatever health concern troubles you, there is likely a form of massage that may be able to address it. With the many benefits that massage therapy offers, you don’t need to feel that getting a massage is a luxury. In fact, your health insurance may even cover all or part of your massage treatment. Take advantage of this age-old practice that has proven health benefits. Massage is good for your mind, body, and soul! The Spooky Season Here It Comes Again!
By Sharon Knierim
To me, October heralds the beginning of the holiday season, and it seems only natural that we spend this moment trying to scare the wits out of unsuspecting folks. Everyone needs a little harmless excitement now and then! Besides, we follow it in November with giving thanks for good harvests and for the blessings bestowed upon us. Then we really hit the big time with Christmas festivities. Of course, we don’t stop there! We wrap it all up with over-the-top New Year’s celebrations. I guess, once we start celebrating, it’s tough to give up all that fun. Although many of the major holidays come during the last few months of the calendar year, Halloween is the one that turns us into semi-scheming kids again. We all have special memories of Halloween trick-or-treating or pranks. Whether you are the target of a prank or acting as the instigator, keeping your sense of humor is what makes the holiday fun. Is it spooky? Sure, it can be awfully spooky. In fact, it can be just as spooky as we allow it to be. Spooky is fun! Gore and terror, however, can have some bad effects on us. We have to be sure that we don’t take it too far; that way, everyone can have fun…and that’s what Halloween is all about!
In today’s world, at least as many adults as children revere and celebrate this holiday. Like most holidays, food and apparel are focal points, and themed gatherings and parties are in style. According to retailers, millions of dollars are spent each year on Halloween preparation, including costumes, food, decorations, parties, and games. Holiday celebrations don’t often have a competitive edge, but Halloween is that rare time when we vie for honors in cooking unusual dishes, wearing outrageous costumes, and entertaining ourselves and each other with games and ghostly traditions. If your trick-or-treating days are long past, you may recall dressing up in a ghostly sheet, in a cowboy or cowgirl costume,

At first it was a stab in the dark; would this form of exposure work or would I need to look for another venue to get my services noticed? I have been very pleased with the quality of the magazine, the staff I have worked with, and most of all the quality of prospects who have become wonderful clients. I wholeheartedly recommend advertising in this publication.” —Pauli Hubbard, CFP with Creative Financial Services, Inc.

or perhaps in a pirate outfit. We were pretty well decked out in non-scary outfits and were usually recognized by our “victims” because at least one of our parents accompanied us around the neighborhood. Parents were probably sent out with us to keep a lid on the craziness that all kids seek when dressed in a costume. Wise parents could guide us by knowing which neighborhoods offered the best treats, which areas to avoid, and when to go home. A close friend of mine just told me that she and her friends used to start their Halloween adventure two or three nights before the actual October 31st hullabaloo. Apparently, they would knock on the front door, then run around the house and knock on the back door, then return to the front door to ring the doorbell, and then hustle off to another house full of unsuspecting residents. In the final analysis, she decided long ago that this bad habit probably greatly diminished the quality and quantity of treats finally handed out to little spooks on Halloween night. Sometimes, a prank does go just a little bit far! Sounds as though there were more tricks than treats. Also, it sounds like fun. Much of today’s neighborhood trickor-treating has been replaced by organized parties and gatherings. Shopping centers and local churches often sponsor safe and sane Halloween parties indoors, away from the unpredictable elements that the Midwest is known for. Adults are always present, and many of the yummy and sticky candy has been replaced by granola, or almonds, or apples. Is it as much fun? Well, that’s up to us! Fun is what you make it. Many adults love to throw Halloween parties. Costumes are usually required, and outlandish foods are a must. Fun? You bet these parties can be lots of fun. Life should be enjoyed! It’s good to be outrageous and step out of our everyday roles once in a while. Who says an accountant can’t be a vampire for one evening? Can a plumber become an astronaut? Why not? Everyone has a special Halloween memory. Here’s mine: In the fourth grade, one of our male classmates dressed in a costume (stuffed with pillows) and a wig with glasses to make himself look like our teacher, Miss Rosemary. Miss Rosemary did not appreciate his mimicry. She grabbed him by the ear and hauled him off to the principal’s office, where he spent the rest of the day. The lesson? It’s fun to have fun, but it’s not nice to ridicule someone else to have that fun. I hope you have a fun Halloween. Boo! WE

Good-Bye, Wrinkles! Plump Your Skin With Dermal Fillers By Kylie Gumpert
Let’s face it—nobody likes getting a shot. However, if an injection can curb the signs of aging? Well, that’s something that nearly 10 million Americans got behind in 2017, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. It’s not just Botox, either! The anti-aging and plumping game has changed quite a bit over the years. Today, there are more than 20 different kinds of dermal filler options, including synthetic compounds as well as the materials from your own body. Let’s take a look at a few options to help you navigate the issue. First, did you know that there are two different types of wrinkles? Dynamic wrinkles are caused by muscle movements, such as smiling, frowning, and squinting. These repetitive movements create lines around the eyes, mouth, and nose, as well as on the forehead. Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are not caused by movement. They are due to a loss of elasticity in the skin that can lead to sagging jowls or cheeks that have lost their youthful fullness. If you want to address the look of dynamic wrinkles, Botox is about to be your best friend. Botox, which is short for Botulinum toxin A, is FDA-approved and is technically a neurotoxin. It works by blocking the nerve signals that tell muscles to contract—no movement, no wrinkle! There are three types of Botox formulations. The formulation affects how much of the toxin is given to a patient, how it spreads, and how long it lasts. When it comes to static wrinkles, freezing the underlying muscle isn’t going to make any difference. If you want the youthful plump you used to enjoy, what you need is a dermal filler. Fillers are all about increasing volume underneath the existing skin. There are generally five different filler types that can be injected into the skin, all of which have certain FDA-approved treatments. The filler with the most FDA-approved options is made from hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in your skin and helps it stay hydrated. When it comes to thickness of injection material, hyaluronic fillers are on the thinner side. This means they might not last as long as other options, but the procedure itself may be more comfortable for the patient. Most of the time, patients can enjoy their new features for six months to a year. After that, the body starts to absorb the filler, and the results are diminished. FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers include those in the Juvéderm family (Juvéderm XC, Voluma, Volbella, and Vollure), the Restylane family (Restylane, Silk, Lyft, Refyne, and Defyne), and Belotero Balance. Depending on the filler brand and product, certain injections are created specifically for different areas of the face. For example, Juvéderm offers one hyaluronic filler meant for plumping cheeks, two meant for smoothing lines and wrinkles, and one made specifically to enhance lip size and fullness. Calcium hydroxylapatite (or CaHA, for those of us who don’t enjoy tongue twisters) is made from a naturally
16
occurring substance found in the bones. The injection itself is thicker and is mainly used for deeper lines and wrinkles. Beyond filling, it is also meant to stimulate collagen production. That means that some patients will find that their skin is more resilient and youthful after treatment, even beyond the year of full, plump, wrinklefree skin that they can expect. There is currently just one FDA-approved CaHA treatment: Radiesse. Filler made from poly-L-lactic acid, which is also found in dissolvable stitches, is synthetic but has been deemed safe to place inside the body. Unlike other fillers, this treatment is actually absorbed by the body just a few days after it is injected. Its real function is to stimulate collagen production so that the body itself makes more, which means that results last more than two years— significantly longer than the results of other treatments. There is one FDA-approved poly-L-lactic acid treatment: Sculptra Aesthetic. Bellafill is another synthetic filler approved by the FDA. This treatment, which is made of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), contains collagen, as well. It is actually considered permanent because PMMA takes the form of tiny, microscopic spheres that do not dissipate over time. Bellafill is only approved for use around the mouth. Last, but not least, we have the longest-lasting filler option: fat injections. Fat is taken from another part of a patient’s body through liposuction and is then injected into the facial area. This treatment is more invasive than other dermal filler treatments because you must first undergo fat-harvesting surgery performed by an experienced and board-certified surgeon. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are another treatment proving to be effective at reducing wrinkles and
www.womensedition.com
age lines. Platelets contain proteins that are important for healing, so an injection that contains a condensed amount of platelets is meant to speed up healing and collagen production. For the most part, PRP is used in cases of physical injury, but some studies are finding it can be an effective way to reduce wrinkles and age lines. A 2017 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that PRP is tolerated well by patients and leads to significant wrinkle correction, especially for laugh lines. Let’s say your “problem” isn’t so much about wrinkles. Maybe it’s under-eye dark circles, also known as tear troughs. While there are no fillers specifically made for the eye area, certain hyaluronic injections, when used carefully, can minimize or nearly eliminate the dark or sunken look. When it comes to choosing a professional to inject your filler, you should use considerable scrutiny. After all, someone is injecting something into your face that will change how you look—you want to make sure your practitioner understands how different fillers work and what will work best for you. You don’t necessarily need a board-certified plastic surgeon, but not just anybody can perform cosmetic filler injections. Rules vary from state to state. Be sure to find out what certifications potential practitioners hold and whether they have significant experience doing filler injections. As with any cosmetic procedure, you should ask to see before and after photos of patients treated by your chosen medical professional. After treatment with dermal fillers, you should expect some short-term swelling, bruising, or slight irritation. Nodules (lumps underneath the skin) are an uncommon side effect that could be caused by an allergy or infection. These can form soon after an injection or even months or years later, so this is important to keep
in mind. As always, be sure that your practitioner is aware of any allergies or medical conditions that you have, and carefully review the patient labeling information for any filler you are considering. You may have seen dermal fillers advertised for sale online. Do not buy these! First of all, only a medical professional should be administering them. Second, there is simply no way for you to know if the filler is fake or contaminated. Liquid silicone and gels are not approved by the FDA to be used as fillers. While there is no specific limit on how many filler injections a person can get, the recommended frequency depends on the product used and the location in which it was placed. For example, someone who has received a PMMA filler like Bellafill around the mouth will not need to get another one because Bellafill is permanent. Someone who gets a hyaluronic acid injection from the Restylane family of products may need another one after a year or so to maintain the new aesthetic. The last thing to keep in mind is your skin type. If your skin is relatively thin, or if it is significantly loose or hanging, fillers may not make any difference—or they may even do more harm than good. It’s important to consult with an experienced medical professional. Based on your current situation and your aesthetic goals, an option like surgery may be more appropriate or effective than dermal fillers. Now that you know the basics, talk to a medical professional about what dermal fillers can do for you! You may be a great candidate to join the growing number of Americans enjoying the youthful look they regained with dermal fillers. Soothe Yourself Healthy Hobbies Improve Well-Being
By Robyn V. Powell
Between work, family, and a to-do list that never ends, life’s busy demands can sometimes feel overwhelming. One of the best ways to restore your sense of balance and improve well-being is to take up an enjoyable hobby. Research confirms that tapping into our creativity boosts positive mental health, provides an opportunity for mindfulness, encourages us to socialize, and combats cognitive decline. Autumn is the perfect time to try a new indoor hobby, like crafting. With cold weather just around the corner, get set to unplug and have some fun! In an era where hands are used primarily for swiping screens, we’ve lost touch with the benefits of tactile sensation. It’s no wonder that shaping things by hand has become one of the most popular trends in crafting—whether it’s working with soft, silky modeling clay or with malleable concrete that can be kneaded like dough, shaped without a mold, and dried without being fired in an oven. Our grandmothers understood the cathartic benefits of using our hands, as well as the social benefits of group projects. Through sewing circles and quilting parties, women connected with others in the community while busying their hands making the necessities of life. Our mechanized society may have eliminated the need to make things by hand, but our minds still crave the well-being found in meaningful effort. Quilting has made a real comeback. Today’s quilts are quirky and modern, are
often made from unusual fabrics, and are as ideal for snuggling as for decorating a wall. Quilts keep you warm, look great on a bed or sofa, and make a wonderful and personal gift. Sewing begins with mastering the basics. As with any project, you should start small and build upon each skill. When paired with fun fabrics, beginner projects such as tote bags and throw pillows can be so chic and elegant that no one will know they were made by a beginner. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you are on your way to more challenging projects made easy with today’s high-tech machines. With the rise of wearable technology, fabrics are being combined with lights, sensors, and circuits that transform clothing into computers. If you don’t own a sewing machine, you can sign up for classes at your local sewing store to learn everything from sewing basics to advanced techniques. ›››

Many of our most treasured holiday ornaments and gifts are those made by hand—especially by the hands of children. Creating and giving holiday decorations and gifts is a terrific way to put everyone in the holiday spirit. The idea of creating something out of nothing but a little imagination and lots of love is what gift giving is all about. Handmade gifts are fun for the maker and special for the recipient. Items like cinnamonscented tree ornaments and holiday keepsakes are sure to be cherished by parents, relatives, and friends. Handmade invitations, stationery, and cards are fun and easy to make. For ideas and know-how, visit your local craft stores. Use your imagination to come up with one-of-a-kind greeting cards. The beautiful art of calligraphy has become one of the most popular hobbies among children and adults and can take creating greeting cards to the next level, making them even more personal and special. Home decorating projects are a fun way to give your space a fresh look. Breathing new life into old furniture by refinishing or painting has become a popular trend. Transform a dated dining hutch into a cheerful gardening station with colorful chalk or milk paint. Take design a step further by adding a pattern through stenciling or by using paint pens to draw designs on drawer fronts or tabletops. Create a gallery wall by arranging artwork or photos. Secondhand stores are treasure troves for finding unique frames that can be painted in fun colors. Stencil or hand-paint a tree on a blank wall and hang family photos on the branches for a whimsical family tree. Crafts can enrich your life and the lives of others. One of the best things about crafting is that it is multigenerational. Get your kids or grandkids involved in projects you can work on together after school or on weekends. Drop by your local crafting stores to see free demos, try new products or techniques, and sign up for classes. Crafting isn’t about producing something perfect. It’s about discovering the fun that can be had from tapping into one’s own creativity and the joy and satisfaction that comes with an end result that’s original and uniquely personal. Take some time out each week for yourself and your hobbies and feel empowered, excited, and recharged. Restoring Confidence with Medical Tattoos Permanent Makeup Artist Judee Reierson By Cheryl Lassota
“Restored. Whole again.” That is how Judee Reierson’s clients react to the lasting physical and emotional effects of her gentle, delicate artistry. For over 19 years, Judee has been an advanced intradermal cosmetic technician. She specializes in a medical form of 3-dimensional tattoo technology that is used to re-create the natural shading and appearance of the nipple and areola. “Breast cancer patients are my primary focus,” says Judee. She is one of only a few practitioners in the country who work on areola restoration for breast cancer survivors. By applying micro insertions of natural pigmentation shades, Judee brings a realistic sense of depth and detail to the reconstructed breast and areola. The makeup eliminates the need for further surgery for nipple reconstruction. “Women can get out of the shower, look in the mirror, and not see the scars of breast cancer anymore,” Judee says with a smile. Friends and family of those afflicted with breast cancer know about the physical struggles survivors face. However, even after successful chemotherapy and surgeries, many women struggle with the not-sovisible depression and distress related to their changed body image. Judee helps them to overcome their focus on physical scars and to return to a sense of normalcy. Pat, a breast cancer survivor from southern Colorado, says she initially considered the areola as “just another body part that didn’t really matter much.” Then, her doctor referred her to Judee. “I can’t believe the difference it has made,” Pat shares. “It has restored me. I didn’t think it would be that important, but the way Judee did this, I can’t even see a surgery scar.” While Judee loves helping to restore confidence to patients who have undergone breast surgery, her talents don’t stop there. She has restored the eyebrows of men and women of all ages who have lost their hair because of cancer treatment or conditions like alopecia or trichotillomania. She creates subtle lash lines that can mimic thousands of tiny eyelashes. Judee performs permanent cosmetic procedures to lessen the appearance of vitiligo and to enhance hairlines. She has used cosmetic tattoos to help camouflage face lift lines and other small scars, burns, birthmarks, stretch marks, cleft lips, freckles, and age spots. Successful treatment of these conditions requires the skill of a highly-trained medical tattoo artist with years of experience in cosmetic intradermal pigmentation techniques. Judee fits the bill. Judee decided to become a permanent makeup aesthetician after living in Arizona, where, she quips, “it got so hot that my eyebrow makeup and eyeliner
24
melted right off my face!” Twenty years ago, she trained in Arizona, Texas, and Florida, learning the trade of permanent makeup and areola restoration. Now, clients come from all over Colorado and elsewhere, seeking Judee’s skill in Owner Judee Reierson applying soft, natural-looking eyebrows, eyeliner, and lip liner. In addition to her medical clients, she also works with people who are active in sports or who simply desire freedom from daily makeup application and appreciate the convenience of permanent makeup. Vicki, a Colorado Springs client, appreciates Judee’s knowledge, experience, and skill. “Judee has done my brows, eyeliner, and lip liner for over 15 years,” Vicki says. “I visit her a couple times a year. She is reliable and accommodating, and she always knows about the newest colors and techniques. I am really pleased. It makes a huge difference, especially as we age and get grayer.” Questions asked of Judee most frequently are, “Does it hurt?” and “Will it wear off?” Vicki can attest that permanent makeup application “does not cause much pain.” Judee explains that the topical anesthetics for eyebrows, liner, and breasts have improved a lot in the past few years; aftercare is minimal, with slight swelling or redness that subsides quickly. “Pain management has greatly improved,” she notes. “A tattoo doesn’t go as deep into delicate facial and breast tissue, so it requires some refresher touch-ups.” Permanent makeup in the United States began in Hollywood but has evolved into a more common cosmetic procedure. “When I first started in this field, it took a while to catch on in Colorado,” Judee says. “Interest in my work began to spread, mostly by word of mouth…or when a client just pulls up her shirt and shows her friends my work!” Judee laughs. “I love it when they are so happy!” For many years, Judee worked within the In Care of You medical boutique. When the boutique closed last fall, Judee opened an office at 1255 Lake Plaza Drive, Suite 265, in Colorado Springs. She receives referrals from several local surgeons and is available, by appointment, Monday through Saturday. For a consultation, call Judee at 719-499-9332 or contact her by email at judeedoesfaces@hotmail.com. WE

Good Looks
The Rainbow After the Rain Reclaiming Your Sense of Self Post-Cancer
By Loretta McCollum
Surviving cancer requires strength, determination, and faith. This disease robs us of more than just our health. It alters our physical appearance, makes us question our femininity, and shakes our self-worth. We wonder if we will ever feel whole again. The good news is that there are more choices than ever to help women rediscover themselves during and after cancer treatment. Reconstructive surgery, permanent makeup and tattoos, and custom hairpieces are just a few of the ways to restore the body and renew the spirit. Hair loss can be one of the most devastating side effects of cancer treatment. Those long locks eventually grow back, but try rocking a shorter style in the meantime. If that’s not for you, consider a wig—they have come a long way from what you might be thinking. They are more comfortable than ever before and are available in a variety of materials and styles. Many insurance companies will cover part, if not all, of the cost; check with your own insurance provider for specifics. Synthetic wigs come in a multitude of colors and styles. They are affordable, low-maintenance, and feel much like natural hair. Color selection is basically unlimited, including many non-traditional colors. A monofilament wig looks very natural. Each hair in this type of wig is hand-sewn into a monofilament mesh, making it easy to part and style. Wigs made from human hair, although more costly, allow you to closely match the color and texture of your natural hair. They also provide maximum styling versatility. Consult with a stylist to determine the best choice for you. As a matter of fact, if you are considering getting a wig, an early visit to a stylist is a good idea. You want your stylist to be familiar with your natural hair to ensure a good color and texture match. This preliminary step can go a long way toward easing your mind later on. Many salons offer complimentary consultations, allowing you to “test drive” several wig options. They can also suggest styling products, discuss possible scalp issues and how to treat them, and provide instructions on caring for your wig. Many local salons participate in an American Cancer Society program through which they will fit you with a hairpiece and style it to your specifications. Some consultations may also include skin, nail, and color analysis. Don’t want to maintain a wig? No problem. Hats, turbans, and scarves are fun alternatives with limitless possibilities. They’re extremely versatile and affordable. Some hats even come with built-in bangs or sewn-in hairpieces. Turbans protect your head from the sun’s rays, and style options abound—they can be easily accessorized with your favorite pin or other piece of jewelry. A scarf can be used as a full or partial head covering, with a plethora of styling techniques. A stylist can work with you on options.

Let’s not forget about those small areas of missing hair. Following chemotherapy, eyebrows typically do not grow back. Tattooing and permanent makeup are two restoration options. Permanent makeup is considered a non-surgical procedure. An anesthetic cream is applied to the skin, and then pigment is inserted into the dermis through a needle. These pigment molecules are smaller than the ink molecules inserted into the skin during the tattooing process, which means that the pigment will eventually fade, while the tattoo provides permanent color. The permanent makeup technique allows for a wider tint variation. Microblading is one of the latest trends to restore a youthful and natural look to the face. Microblading restores the brows to their original shape and look, by applying semi-permanent makeup and stroking individual looking hairs onto the skin. A professional artist can advise clients about the best options for their needs. Women who have had mastectomies often feel as if a portion of their womanhood was taken along with their breast. Of course, a woman is more than her breasts, but it can still feel like a robbery. Thankfully, there are multiple options to help restore a sense of femininity. Breast forms that include areola and nipple detail can be used with regular bras. Most are made of silicone and appear quite natural. Many women opt for breast reconstruction surgery, using either silicone implants or tissue transplanted from another part of the body. Three-dimensional nipple and areola tattoos can complete the reconstruction process for an especially natural look. Some patients choose a more artistic approach with tattoos, turning their surgical scars into whimsical works of art. Having made it through one of life’s toughest chapters, all of us who undergo cancer treatment deserve to feel good about ourselves. Tai Ji Acupuncture Something Old That’s New to You By Ariel Heart
Acupuncture has been around for approximately 5,000 years in Asia. It found its way to the United States around 1970, but it was still practiced primarily in Chinese communities. In the last couple of decades, however, acupuncture and its fantastic health benefits have finally become mainstream in the United States. The World Health Organization has formally recognized Chinese medicine and acupuncture for their health benefits. The Mayo Clinic has been utilizing acupuncture for years now; according to their website, they perform “more than 1,100 acupuncture treatments” per year. Acupuncture is ranked the number-one alternative medicine for healing from cancer treatments such as chemotherapy to stabilize and strengthen the body’s constitution. Acupuncture treats the mind and body, looking at a person as a whole and not just as individual parts. It heals on a cellular level. It is only one aspect of Chinese medicine, which also includes things like herbal medicine, dietary prescriptions, and nutrition and exercise guidelines. As Dr. Debbie Ting of Tai Ji Acupuncture explains, symptoms are often the first outward sign of something that has been brewing in the body for years. “A condition
doesn’t just happen,” she says. “It may have been developing for months or years before the body starts showing symptoms. In Chinese medicine, we try to find the root cause of a health issue, not just treat you when you’re feeling sick.” She likens it to regular car maintenance. “Every 3,000 miles, you get an oil change to keep your car running better. It’s the same idea with your body—having a tune-up instead of waiting until you feel sick.” It’s important to understand that embracing Chinese medicine does not mean giving up on Western medicine! Dr. Ting emphasizes that, although acupuncturists don’t have a lot of high-tech equipment

like MRI scanners, a properly trained and licensed Chinese medicine practitioner can read and understand Western medicine’s scans and tests and incorporate the information into your treatment plans. You have probably heard of acupuncture as the process of inserting needles into particular points on the body. However, you may not have heard of acupuncture injections, which have been in use in China for decades. In this procedure, sterile natural herbs are injected into a specific trouble area. Dr. Ting offers acupuncture injections for treating chronic pain or other symptoms that are resistant to healing. It is particularly effective for damaged soft tissue or ligaments that need a boost to heal without an epidural or steroids. Tiffany and Makayla enjoy working at Tai Ji Acupuncture. It isn’t like a standard doctor’s visit, they note. It feels more relaxed and comfortable. In addition to acupuncture, Makayla notes, Dr. Ting also does facials and other cosmetic offerings. “Many women venture into that and see good results with it,” Makayla shares. “If there are women out there looking for healthy, natural ways to pamper themselves, like a facial or massage, this would be an awesome alternative to try out.” Dr. Ting offers cosmetic facial injections, an all-natural treatment of herbs, minerals, and enzymes that reduces fine lines without toxins. She also does injections for weight loss that help kick-start your metabolism and burn fat as a natural alternative to processed chemical diet aids. Growing up in Taiwan, Dr. Ting always wanted to be in the
medical field, perhaps to follow in her aunt’s shoes and become a nurse. She moved to the United States when she was 16 and decided that her love for animals meant she should be a veterinarian, instead. In veterinary school in England, she began doing acupuncture on animals, including an elderly dog with arthritis that was limping with pain. After a few treatments, the dog was able to walk without the crippling pain. This was a turning point for Dr. Ting and sparked her desire to pursue Chinese medicine. After finishing her veterinary degree, she began her training for Chinese medicine. Back in California, she met and married her husband, Todd. Fifteen years ago, they moved to Colorado Springs for a job offer. Todd now works as the office manager at Tai Ji Acupuncture, and he and Dr. Ting have two sons, aged 9 and 11. They enjoy hiking on trails and in state parks. They love the great air quality here and the wide open spaces. Dr. Ting’s parents still live in California, so she gets her dose of the ocean when she visits them. Dr. Ting earned her degrees from Samra University of Oriental Medicine, in Los Angeles, California, and Beijing Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, in China. She is licensed for acupuncture and Chinese herbology through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). Dr. Ting has been in practice for 24 years. Interest rates and bond prices move in opposite directions. The price of a bond will decrease in value when interest rates rise. 2. Interest rates changes have a more dramatic effect on bonds with longer maturities. 3. Bond price changes are less significant for bonds with higher coupon rates. We Conquer Ourselves Breaking Through Your Illusionary Limits I have had several occasions where I have had to deal with a particular individual in business situations. I was discussing that person’s typical response with a friend of mine when he commented that it sounded like the kind of person who, after events occur, often says, “What happened?” I thought that was interesting and probably accurate. That associate has never seemed very proactive nor willing to take on any risks. “There are three categories of people in industry: the few who make things happen, the many who watch things happen, and the overwhelming majority who have no idea what happened." —O. A. Battista That sort of person won’t be the best contributor to any organization and, in fact, will slow the success of an organization. Anyone who isn’t a sail is an anchor; instead of moving things along, they drag everyone down. “What holds so many employees back is an unwillingness to pay the price, to make the extertion, and the effort to sacrifice their ease and comfort.” —Orison Marden Some folks appear to have lost their zest for life. or joy. They definitely don’t seem to be having very much fun. Sometimes, we just feel so beaten up by life, and we don’t feel enough support around us. Sometimes, we just feel like coasting. “Far too many people sit back and coast just when they should be moving to the edge of their seats and hitting the accelerator.” —Les Brown The worst thing about coasting is that it can become a very comfortable habit of living. If it becomes comfortable, we start overvaluing things like “safety” and “security.” The worst thing about valuing these illusions is that we stop taking risks, we stop setting bigger and better goals, we stop having great visions for our great life. It is so important to realize that the limits you experience are also illusions. There probably are no real limits for you to experience in your career, your relationships, your social life, your overall quality of life. However, if you don’t take risks, then you can’t get to that special moment when you experience the joy and thrill of breaking through your illusionary limits—your fears, doubts, and worries— and create your life the way you truly want it to be. You can conquer this, but only if you are willing to make the exertion and the effort to sacrifice your ease and comfort. You must gather your courage, set your sights on your goals, conquer your limitations, and succeed. WE

Planning Ahead Doesn’t Always Work Give ’Em a Break Do you ever feel like you take two steps back for every step you take forward? It’s frustrating! I try to plan ahead. I do everything I think is necessary to get a task done. Then, something out of my control happens, and I fall behind. For example: Last spring, there were several maintenance projects I wanted to accomplish before summer came and it got too hot. I talked to my Lawn Guy about weeding and feeding and seeding the yard. He agreed. I mentioned to my Handy Man that I wanted to get the house and deck painted. He said he could do that. Prices for both jobs were agreed upon, and I bought the necessary materials. Everything was stored where they had access. So far, I was ahead of the game. Then, I went out of town for a couple of weeks, and the weather turned unseasonably hot while I was gone. The grass turned brown from thirst. Oops! I’d forgotten to have the sprinkler system turned on. Lawn Guy called and suggested not applying the weed/feed/seed because it wouldn’t take without water. Good idea. Handy Man got started painting, but it was so hot that the paint was drying almost before the brush touched the wood. Not good. That job also got postponed. I have a “go with the flow” kind of attitude. Don’t worry about things you have no control over. If you can do something about it, do it. If not, don’t worry about it. Weather is going to happen! I got the sprinkler system turned on as soon as I got

home...and then we had a period of serious rain. Handy Man couldn’t paint wet wood, and there’s no way to keep the rain from hitting the house, short of erecting a dome over it. The project had to be put back on hold. Lawn Guy had a family emergency to deal with, so the lawn project was also put on hold again. Now, I’m sitting here with two major projects unfinished. Lawn Guy has kept up with mowing, but the weed, feed, and seed directions said it should be applied either in the cool of the spring or the cool of the fall, so we’ll have to wait until the weather cooperates. Handy Man got part of the painting done before he, too, was distracted by a family emergency. It’s out of my hands. I just hope it all gets done this fall. What does this have to do with kids? They also make plans that fall apart through no fault of their own. When that happens, parents sometimes get mad and yell about sticking to the job. Take a look, though. Was there really anything they could have done differently? Did they learn from their mistakes? (I did!) Talk to them. Remember, kids are people, too. Give ’em a break. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Celebrating Five Years of Success! Consign and Design
By Megan K. Olsen
A mélange of color, texture, carpentry, and artwork. That is what dazzles customers when they step into Consign and Design, an incomparable business that is part consignment store, part home staging service, and part gallery for local artists and jewelry designers. Customers learn very quickly about the unique nature of this company that not only collects and sells high-end furniture brands and designs from around the world at affordable prices but also assists customers in the ideal arrangement of their furnishings inside their homes. Five years ago, the owner, Karin Wyeno, took a chance with a business idea based on her past experiences with home staging. “In 2007, I started a home staging and interior design business,” she recalls. “We suddenly found ourselves doing a lot of vacant homes because of the housing market crash. We were going into these gorgeous, high-end homes that were just sitting there and not selling. All of a sudden, I started acquiring all this inventory because the furniture I needed was not available to rent.” Over the years, she ended up purchasing more and more, and she started doing quarterly liquidation sales out of her garage. “I was also doing staging consultations with homes that were still occupied,” she continues. “We would help declutter, rearrange things, and bring out the best in the home. Also, if they were liquidating, we could help sell the furniture. I was always referring my clients to other consignment stores. Finally, I decided to just open my own store. Between the staging and the consignment, it was the perfect marriage.” On August 11th, Karin and her five employees celebrated Consign and Design’s five years of success with an anniversary party. Karin is quick to point out the invaluable contributions that her employees bring to their respective jobs. “Everyone brings something to the table,” Karin remarks. “Christina and April have been with me from the very beginning.” Christina Thompson has lived in Germany and the Phillipines and has traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia. She is retired military and speaks German and French. April Smith (originally from Panama) is retired military, speaks fluent Spanish, and has lived in several countries, including South Korea. “It’s not uncommon to hear one of my employees speaking in a foreign language with a customer,” Karin notes. “Because they are former military, we draw a large percentage of military clientele.” In fact, one third of Consign and Design’s business is military personnel, and Christina and April often already know the value and history of the furniture and other decorative pieces that clients bring with them from their time spent serving in other countries. This unique
34
business relationship has led to the store and its storage facility being filled with an eclectic assortment of settees, tapestries, rugs, paintings, desks, armoires, dressers, nightstands, and various household items from places like France, Italy, Iran, China, and Japan. Karin’s impressive staff also includes l-r back row: Elaine, Elaine Ausmus, whose previous experience focused on Jeffrey, and Karin; decorating parade homes, and Susan Peckham, who grew front row: Susan, up in Taiwan, speaks Mandarin Chinese, and has a wide- April, and Christina ranging knowledge of Asian designs from her travels with her husband. The final member of Karin’s team is Jeffrey Jensen, who has a degree in Industrial Design with an emphasis on Interiors and Furniture. His experience in design direction has spanned from New York, London, and now Colorado Springs. “He has very modern style, so he keeps pushing me to expand in that way. I feel very blessed to have this team that brings this cultural awareness and expertise about furniture and design with them.” There is a framed chalkboard on the wall just as you walk into Consign and Design. It reads: “Be passionate about vintage treasures and savvy about contemporary design. Then you will have a tranquil, livable space that blends the best of the old with the new!” This is a great summation of the philosophy that Karin and her staff embrace when it comes to consignment, home design, home staging, and reimagining what can be done in a customer’s own living spaces. “We help people by bringing out the best potential in their homes, getting the best prices on furniture and accessories, and simplifying their lives in the process,” Karin concludes. “I like to think we handle everything with a lot of love and care.” Consign and Design is located at 975-D Garden of the Gods Road. For further information on services and hours, please visit them online at consignanddesigninc.com. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle—Resell! The Benefits of Consignment Shopping

If you run into a friend who’s sporting an amazing designer purse or jacket, don’t be surprised to learn that it was purchased at a consignment shop. Shopping for resale items at consignment shops is growing in popularity. Fashionistas are always on the lookout for stylish or classic items for their wardrobes or their homes. According to the 2018 resale report on ThredUp.com, the resale market will reach $41 billion by 2022. Last year, 44 million women shopped secondhand, and it is becoming a lifestyle for many people. In short, a consignment shop sells items that belong to other people. Some consignment stores buy items from the owners at an agreed-upon price when the items are brought into the store. More commonly, the store puts the items on the salesfloor for a certain amount of time (weeks or months, usually) and then keeps a percentage of the sale price whenever the item is sold. In that case, the original owner of the item is not paid until the item sells. The most common items sold on consignment are clothing and furniture, but consignment shops may sell a wide variety of items. Many shops specialize in a particular niche and may limit themselves to selling items of only certain brands or particular designers. Some shops may specialize in items for a certain age group or style, like professional women’s clothing or children’s clothing. Everyone benefits from consignment shopping— the seller, the buyer, and the consignment shop. Sellers, of course, get money for items that they no longer plan to use. To be successful at selling your items on consignment, make sure that your items are clean and in good condition. If a particular shop isn’t interested in what you bring in, don’t take it personally. They know their customers, and they know what they’ll be able to resell. If you are new to selling items on consignment, be sure to ask questions. How will they price your items? What percentage do they take, or will they buy the items from you today? How long do they keep your items? How will you know when your items sell? What happens to your items if they don’t sell? These are all good questions to ask, and shop owners will be happy to explain the process. There are also advantages to shopping at a consignment store. For someone who always wants that one-of-a-kind item that no one else has, who wants to stay on top of high-end fashion without breaking the bank, or who enjoys the freedom of changing wardrobes often, consignment is a great option. One unique benefit of consignment shopping is environmental, and that is something millennial shoppers are demanding. Clothing is the second biggest polluting industry worldwide (second only to petroleum). When you buy an item on consignment, you are keeping that item out of a landfill. Lastly, don’t forget the thrill of the find! Sure, it takes a little longer
than grabbing a shirt off the rack at a department store, but searching for and then finding that perfect piece is a very satisfying way to shop. The benefits for the consignment shop include being able to sell merchandise without fronting the money for all the inventory in the store. Shop owners often establish long-term, personal relationships with their customers. Many times, they will identify items they know some of their regular customers would love or are looking for and reach out to them before displaying items on the salesfloor. I have been both a seller and a buyer in consignment, and my experiences have been very positive. When I was newly married, I fell in love with a maple kitchen table with black chairs that I couldn’t afford to buy. By the time I had the funds I needed, the set was no longer being manufactured. However, a few years later, I found the table and chairs in a consignment shop and purchased them used for a very reasonable price. My experience as a seller was in central Nebraska, when I cleaned out my mother’s house. There was a consignment store in a nearby town. They came to the house and picked up the furniture. A few months later, I received a check in the mail for my percentage of the proceeds. It could not have been any easier, and I was able to get some cash for furniture that would otherwise have been taken to a landfill. If you’re looking to update your wardrobe or home, or if you need to make some space for new things, give consignment a try. It saves money, it’s good for the environment, and it’s fun! Education, Early Detection, and Treatment for Breast Cancer
By Connie Keck
One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Each year, it is estimated that over 250,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and that more than 40,000 will die. However, the number of women who die of breast cancer has steadily decreased over the last 30 years, thanks to early detection and treatment improvements. Today, over 3.3 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States. While statistics are valuable, it’s important to note that they are only averages. Each person’s individual risk of death from breast cancer depends on many factors, including the size of the tumor, the number of lymph nodes that contain cancer, how quickly the tumor grows, and how well the treatments work. It’s also important to remember that breast cancer is not the same for everyone— there may even be genetic differences within a single tumor. Open dialogue with your healthcare team is important to understand your diagnosis and treatment options. The best first step is to advocate for your own breast health. Are you doing self-examinations of your breasts? Are you getting a yearly mammogram? Have you noticed changes in your breasts recently? Have there been any changes in how the breasts or nipples look or feel? Has there been any clear or bloody discharge from the nipples? This is all information that you need to share with your healthcare provider. In some instances, your provider may
want to conduct additional tests, which may include an ultrasound, an MRI, blood tests, or a biopsy. Treatment strategies are not all the same; they depend heavily on the type of cancer and the stage of the cancer. Your provider may refer to the TNM system for breast cancer staging: T refers to tumor size, N refers to lymph node status (the number and location of lymph nodes with cancer), and M refers to metastasis (whether or not the cancer has spread to other parts of the body). Early detection of cancer is crucial for diagnostic testing and treatment choices, and researchers are learning new things about treatment all the time. The National Cancer Institute recently published new findings from a groundbreaking trial known as Trial Assigning Individualized Options for Treatment (Rx), or TAILORx. In their June 2018 press release, they note that the findings “show no benefit from chemotherapy for 70 percent of women with the most common type of breast cancer. The study found that for women with hormone-receptor (HR)-positive, HER2negative, axillary lymph node–negative breast cancer, treatment with chemotherapy and hormone therapy after surgery is not more

beneficial than treatment with hormone therapy alone.” This new information will undoubtedly influence treatment for many women who have this type of cancer in its early stages. Another diagnostic test, the Oncotype DX breast cancer test, is for women who have been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer (invasive or DSIC [noninvasive]). This unique genomic test, as described on MyBreastCancerTreatment. org, “looks at the activity of certain genes in your breast tumor tissue to provide personalized information that can help you and your doctor tailor treatment to your individual cancer. This pioneering genomic test was developed to eliminate the ‘onesize-fits-all’ approach to cancer treatment that often leads to the over-treatment or under-treatment of early-stage breast cancer.” Some people with cancer will only have one treatment, but most people undergo a combination of treatments, such as surgery combined with chemotherapy or radiation therapy. You may also have immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or hormone therapy. Alternative cancer treatments may not play a direct role in curing your cancer, but they may help you cope with side effects from treatments or associated symptoms, such as anxiety, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, pain, difficult sleeping, and stress. Beyond the medical and surgical components of cancer care, living a healthy lifestyle is also extremely important. Take control of your breast cancer journey! Incorporating healthy choices into your daily life can help improve your body’s ability to fight disease. Weight loss is one of the most important lifestyle changes to make. Talk with your doctor about a healthy weight goal and find ways to integrate physical activity into your current lifestyle. Minimizing alcohol intake, quitting smoking, and taking vitamins tailored to your needs are all shown to improve the odds of success when fighting disease. Vitamin D, in particular, is a valuable nutrient to take daily through a supplement. Check with your doctor about other vitamins that may be beneficial to you. Don’t be afraid to ask for support! Talk with other women and find out what support resources are available in your community. The only good thing about breast cancer being so common is that it means you’re not alone on this journey. Fall Deep Cleaning Make Your Home Sparkle for Holiday Guests
By Anne Yankus
It may seem like it’s a little soon to think about winter holidays, but it’s never too early to start prepping the house for holiday guests. You’ll want to put your best foot forward with a deep fall cleaning of floors, walls, bathrooms—the works! First and foremost, you’ll want to get all your carpet and rugs cleaned. Carpet manufacturers generally recommend a professional steam cleaning every 12–18 months. Check with different companies to see what kinds of chemicals they use, if any, especially if you have kids or pets who will be down on the rug. For hard flooring, it’s also a great idea to have a professional come in and do a deep clean at least once a year, and what better time than after your family and pets have been running in from the yard all summer, tracking dirt and who knows what else? If your floors are in good condition, a good cleaning will do the job (make sure that special attention is paid to high-traffic areas). However, if they are looking worn, it might be time for professional refinishing. The next item on the cleaning list is walls. Over time, walls can get dusty, especially if you run an ultrasonic humidifier during the winter. Walls should be dusted carefully so as not to harm the finished surfaces. In the kitchen, the walls (as well as the cabinets) may develop greasy buildup from cooking. Professional housecleaners will have the know-how and the tools to remove buildup without damaging the finish of your cabinets and walls. If your walls still look dingy or faded after they’re clean, it may be time for a new paint job. You’ll be amazed by how quickly a team of professional painters can get the job done—and by how quickly they can clean up! A pro paint job is often well worth the higher price point (compared to doing it yourself) because of how much you save in time and hassle. After getting your floors and walls spruced up, you’ll want to turn your focus to your bathroom— specifically, the grout. Due to its porous nature, grout can actually become dirtier as you mop or clean it. If your grout is looking dingy even though you keep the tile clean, a professional bathroom cleaner can bring it back to life. A pro can also determine if you have mold or mildew growing underneath your grout (check for discoloration or a distinct smell). If the grout is significantly cracked or deteriorating, it’s time to have the tile re-grouted. A part of your house that may or may not need cleaning is your air ducts. The EPA recommends getting your ducts cleaned only if there is visible mold growth inside the ducts, if ducts are infested with vermin, or if the ducts are so clogged with dust and debris that particulate is being released through the vents into your home. A duct cleaning company can
38
identify these issues. It is recommended that you first fix the source of the problem and then have the ducts professionally cleaned. Something else that should definitely be put on your list is window cleaning. By all means, give your windows a once-over with a bottle of Windex and a rag inside the house, if you’d rather do it yourself. For the exterior, it’s best to hire a pro. In addition to saving time and not having to climb a ladder, a professional window cleaner can also help identify problems with your windows, signs of insect infestation, and the cause of spots on the windows. If your home has a fireplace with a chimney, regular chimney cleaning is a must. It protects your family from accidental fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. The right person for this job is a professional chimney sweep. You’ll definitely want to make sure your chimney sweep is certified through the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA). After taking care of all those big projects, general cleaning probably sounds exhausting! Why not hire a cleaning service for the rest of the little stuff? There are many excellent time-saving cleaning services to be found online or through recommendations from friends and neighbors. Services can clean just once or on a regular basis. Once the house is clean, take a look around. Do your decorative items need to match a new paint color? Do you need some new linens to put on that shiny, clean table? Nothing goes better with freshly cleaned windows than new drapes. The sky is the limit for freshening up your house before you show it off to holiday guests! Positive Perspective
Be Passionate Again You Don’t Have to Stay Stuck Do you ever feel stuck? You know what I mean. The passion is gone. You’re tired. There is no thrill in your life. You struggle to get out of bed, get to work, do your job. At home, you bark at the kids, annoy your spouse. You find yourself asking, “Is that all there is?” “Are you bored with life? Then throw yourself into some work you believe in with all your heart, live for it, die for it, and you find happiness that you had thought could never be yours.” —Dale Carnegie Wait a minute—you say—I already did that! I created a job that I loved. It’s just that, well, I’ve been doing it for so long, the thrill is gone, there is no excitement, no challenge. Life is such an interesting journey. We are constantly looking around us, making decisions as to what we want to have happen— what we want to create. Sometimes, things turn out exactly like we had imagined. We get just what we said we wanted. Standing in this new place, this new reality, we realize that there are things about this creation that we didn’t force when we originally launched our creation. Then, many of us begin to feel stuck. We lose the passion that got us here in the first place. What’s a human being to do? “Whatever you can do, or believe you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” —Goethe
By Janet Van deWalle
Is that really possible? Can we take a look at where we are currently standing and set new goals, make a new decision? Can we begin a new creation? Can we boldly go where we’ve never gone before? This is what creation is all about. It is an ever-evolving work of art. So many of us are concerned with “getting it done.” Well, we will never get it done! Our wants, our desires are always going to change. We create something and then we stand in that place of achieving it. The contrast once we have arrived shows us what we like about our creation…and what we don’t. We then make a new decision, based on where we are today and launch a new decision, a new creation. The trap that many of us set ourselves is believing that we are stuck. Is it safer to stay with what you’ve already created? Of course. Is it scary to expand your creation and make the decision that you want more? Certainly. Realize, though, that when you launched your original creation it was a little scary, too! “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” —Mark Twain Life is an ever-evolving creation. We don’t have to stay stuck. We can make a new decision. We can start to have fun and be passionate again. We can return to the purpose of our lives. WE
