Editor’s Notes
March Madness Memories I love March. Although we lose an hour of sleep this month, I feel energized as the season ushers in longer days, more sunshine, spring cleaning, and St. Patrick’s Day parties. Five years ago, I met Jennifer and Sean and their close-knit family. I was told they threw the best St. Patrick’s Day parties ever. That year, however, their oldest son, Emmet, was going off to college, and partying wasn’t on their minds. Emmet’s younger sister, Melissa, was heartbroken at the thought of her brother leaving home. Kelly, a mutual friend, suggested to me that a dog might help Melissa fend off her loneliness. Coincidentally, I was wrestling with what I was beginning to understand as a huge mistake: I had adopted a little shih-poo mix the year before. Daisy was cute and full of energy…and chewed everything in sight when I was away at work. Daisy attracted attention everywhere she went. One afternoon, my daughter-in-law, Sally, and I took Daisy to the park, and she got off the leash. She ran like lightning, smack into the middle of a football game. The game came to an immediate halt as Sally risked being tackled and ran to rescue the rebel dog. On another early morning, Daisy dashed out the door when a delivery man came. I kicked off my chewed-up bedroom slippers and chased her half a mile down the street until she found a friend watering his lawn. I took her to training classes, but it didn’t help. She just needed more daytime attention than I could provide. I asked Jennifer and her family to come over and meet Daisy. When Melissa picked Daisy up, it was love at first lick. They took her home, built her a castle, and bought her a tiara and a wardrobe for every occasion. Four years later, I was reunited with Daisy at their family’s St. Patrick’s Day party. She hadn’t changed a bit. When I got out of my car, Daisy darted out the front door, wearing a green shamrock hat. I was certain a chase would ensue. Instead, she ran right into my arms. I laughed and cried as she licked my face. What a great March day that was! I am certain that Daisy is in the home where she belongs. It has felt good for the last few years to be able to do my spring cleaning without throwing away shoes that have been chewed beyond recognition. Isn’t it great that sometimes our mistakes can become something wonderful for someone else? Before I go, I don’t want to forget this month’s wedding anniversaries: Adam and Sally’s 16th; my niece, Adana, and Jonathan’s 30th. Happy anniversary!

25 Years of Tommy Bahama Bradley O’Brien Talks Success Secrets
By Holly Bell
Iconic island lifestyle brand Tommy Bahama is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018! Few brands can brag of ongoing fabric innovation, inspiring creativity in design, and ongoing customer satisfaction like Tommy Bahama. The brand offers more than just amazing apparel with comfort, ease, and style. It is also a great resource for beach gear like beach chairs, umbrellas, and hammocks. My favorite is a pop-up sun shelter with easy setup and portability—it’s perfect for those sunny days at the beach, park, or backyard, when there is not a tree in sight. If you love to entertain islandstyle, visit Tommy Bahama online at tommybahama.com for something fun and different in home accessories. When I was checking out the new Island Active apparel, I was impressed to learn that the fabric is breathable and fast-drying, has excellent UV protection, and resists damage from chlorine and salt water. It is also designed for maximum mobility and comfort, which makes it a perfect addition to my workout wardrobe, and it’s accommodating by the pool or at the beach, making this multi-use clothing essential when packing for a trip. Tommy Bahama also has a chain of restaurants that pay homage to the easygoing lifestyle and feature fresh seafood, local produce, innovative new dishes, and fabulous desserts. I vow to visit the next time I am near one of their 18 international locations. Recently, I was delighted to interview Bradley O’Brien, the executive vice president of design and product development at Tommy Bahama. She was kind enough to answer some of my questions about Tommy Bahama. Holly Bell: Can you describe the typical Tommy Bahama customer? Bradley O’Brien: We are so fortunate to have an incredibly passionate guest. In terms of demographics, they are typically 40–65 years old and live in or enjoy traveling to sunny locales. They truly live the island life! Holly: Does your spring collection have a predominant theme? Bradley: We start each season by picking an exotic location for the design teams to get inspired. For spring 2018, we chose Palm Beach, home to legendary resorts, exquisite mansions, and historic landmarks. It was here that “winter” became a verb. Inspiration came from the crisp black-and-white striped awnings that grace Worth Avenue, the punchy pink of the ubiquitous bougainvillea, and the bright green of the perfectly manicured privet hedges. Holly: How does Tommy Bahama stay current in a challenging and competitive marketplace? Bradley: We have a world-class team of designers! They study the macro trends in the market, keenly understand the complete landscape, attend all relevant trade shows, and have a deep understanding of our guest. They use the brand as a filter for their research to ensure we deliver a great product that will delight our guest in its quality, relevance, and beauty. Holly: What pieces would you recommend for a new Tommy Bahama customer? Bradley: In men’s, we have expanded on our offering of Island Zone to include silk camps, polos, sweaters, and bottoms. We’ve added more fabrications of our classic camp silhouettes to include cottons and denim-friendly knits. We’ve recently launched a new chino program called

the Boracay, which is destined to become his go-to khaki of 2018. The fit, comfort, and hand are fantastic. In women’s, we’ve taken a page from the success of the men’s Island Zone and now offer polos, skirts, and dresses with temperature regulation. We have incredible in-house art, which adorns our dress collections, and great resort essentials— everything she’ll need. We recently launched Island Active, an exciting extension to our women’s swim. It’s a collection of activewear that functions in and around the water. Because we are celebrating our 25th anniversary, we have some great limited edition collectible products for our die-hard fans.

Holly: When I think of Tommy Bahama, I think of vacation. Is that your prime market, or can Tommy Bahama be an integral part of an everyday wardrobe? Bradley: Absolutely! We want to be top of the mind with our guests when they are thinking about packing for a vacation, but our brand is very versatile. You can live the island life every day, even if you’re at the office, daydreaming about an unforgettable tropical vacation. Our colors and prints instantly make you feel happy, and the quality and hand of the fabrics are so comfortable, they feel like familiar friends. From now on, when I think of Tommy Bahama, I will not only think of vacation. I will think of the brand as something to wear at the gym, in the office, to the store, or just for fun! Wearing Tommy Bahama makes you feel like you are on vacation whenever you look into a mirror! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

OMAHA REUBENS
Omaha Reubens Warm several slices of thinly sliced corned beef (or turkey). Spread mayo or Thousand Island dressing on top of good rye bread (or sauerkraut bread; see page 11). Add the warmed meat, the amount of drained sauerkraut you desire, and several slices of Swiss cheese. Top with another slice of bread. Lightly butter the outsides of the rye bread. Toast in a skillet (press down with a spatula while toasting) until sandwiches are crisp and lightly browned. Serve with dill pickles and olives. Shirred Eggs Butter ramekins (1 for each person). Pour 1 teaspoon of cream into each ramekin, then break 1 egg into each ramekin. Salt and pepper to taste. To each ramekin, add 1 teaspoon of freshly snipped chives and 1 teaspoon of grated Parmesan cheese. Place ramekins on a cookie sheet and bake at 325 degrees for 15 minutes. Allow several minutes setting time after you remove them from the oven. Serve with sliced ham, bacon, and fruit. Baked Fish Rinse 4–6 pieces of cod (or any white fish), pat dry, and put

onion (and the juices) into the slow cooker. Add 2 chopped celery stalks, 2 peeled and chunk-cut carrots, 2 Tablespoons of tomato paste, 3 peeled and chunk-cut parsnips, and 3 or 4 cut-up potatoes. (Alternative: Cook the potatoes separately at the end and serve them mashed.) Add seasonings like salt, pepper, and thyme, to taste. Pour in 3–4 cups of beef broth and 1 pint of stout beer (like Guinness). Cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hours. Traditional Corned Beef and Cabbage (This can be adapted for instant pot.) Empty a packaged corned beef, juice, and spice packet into a large soup pot (add more “pickling spices,” if you want to). Fill the pot with about 4 cups of water, just to the top of the corned beef. Add a large cut-up onion, several chunk-cut carrots, and a bay leaf or two. Bring to a boil, then turn down the heat and simmer for 3–4 hours. During the last 30 minutes of cooking, add 5–6 washed but unpeeled red potatoes. During the last 10 minutes of cooking, add a head of chunk-cut cabbage. (If you’re out of room, you can cook the potatoes and cabbage separately. If you do, add some of the corned beef cooking water for flavor.) Remove the corned beef, let it rest a minute, and then slice thinly against the grain. Serve with a homemade horseradish mustard (mix sour cream, horseradish, and yellow mustard). Sauerkraut Bread Mix the package of flour and yeast from a box of hot roll mix. Add 1 teaspoon of caraway seed. Stir in 1 cup of drained sauerkraut, 1 cup of hot water, 2 Tablespoons of soft butter, and 1 egg. Use a dough hook to mix for 2–3 minutes. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured counter and knead for 4–5 minutes. Put the dough
into a greased loaf pan, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes. Brush with an egg wash and bake at 375 degrees for 35–45 minutes. Cool for 15 minutes in the pan, then remove from pan and continue to cool. Mamie’s Irish Soda Bread Presoak three-fourths cup of raisins in hot water to plump them. Mix together 2 cups of flour, one-third cup of sugar, one-half teaspoon of salt, one and one-half teaspoons of baking powder, and one-half teaspoon of baking soda. Add the plumped raisins. In another bowl, beat 1 egg and add two-thirds cup of buttermilk and 1 Tablespoon of melted butter. Mix just to moisten. On a lightly floured counter, knead lightly and shape into a plump disk. Cut a cross on top and brush with an egg wash. Place on a buttered cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. Great for toast! St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Bundt Cake (This recipe is from the ’70s!) Mix together a box of yellow or white cake mix (no pudding added), a small box of instant pistachio pudding, 4 eggs, one-half cup of orange juice, one-half cup of water, and one-half cup of vegetable oil. Mix well. Remove one cup of cake batter and add onehalf cup of chocolate syrup to it (along with an optional splash of Irish coffee liqueur). Mix well and set aside. Liberally grease a Bundt-style cake pan. Pour half of the cake mix in the cake pan, add the chocolate syrup, then add the rest of the batter. Run a knife through the batters several times to marble. Bake at 350 degrees for 50–60 minutes (or until a toothpick comes out clean). Glaze with a ganache or a greentinted confectioner’s sugar glaze. WE

Restoring Confidence with Medical Tattoos Permanent Makeup Artist Judee Reierson By Cheryl Lassota
“Restored. Whole again.” That is how Judee Reierson’s clients react to the lasting physical and emotional effects of her gentle, delicate artistry. For over 19 years, Judee has been an advanced intradermal cosmetic technician. She specializes in a medical form of 3-dimensional tattoo technology that is used to re-create the natural shading and appearance of the nipple and areola. “Breast cancer patients are my primary focus,” says Judee. She is one of only a few practitioners in the country who work on areola restoration for breast cancer survivors. By applying micro insertions of natural pigmentation shades, Judee brings a realistic sense of depth and detail to the reconstructed breast and areola. The makeup eliminates the need for further surgery for nipple reconstruction. “Women can get out of the shower, look in the mirror, and not see the scars of breast cancer anymore,” Judee says with a smile. Friends and family of those afflicted with breast cancer know about the physical struggles survivors face. However, even after successful chemotherapy and surgeries, many women struggle with the not-sovisible depression and distress related to their changed body image. Judee helps them to overcome their focus on physical scars and to return to a sense of normalcy. Pat, a breast cancer survivor from southern Colorado, says she initially considered the areola as “just another body part that didn’t really matter much.” Then, her doctor referred her to Judee. “I can’t believe the difference it has made,” Pat shares. “It has restored me. I didn’t think it would be that important, but the way Judee did this, I can’t even see a surgery scar.” While Judee loves helping to restore confidence to patients who have undergone breast surgery, her talents don’t stop there. She has restored the eyebrows of men and women of all ages who have lost their hair because of cancer treatment or conditions like alopecia or trichotillomania. She creates subtle lash lines that can mimic thousands of tiny eyelashes. Judee performs permanent cosmetic procedures to lessen the appearance of vitiligo and to enhance hairlines. She has used cosmetic tattoos to help camouflage face lift lines and other small scars, burns, birthmarks, stretch marks, cleft lips, freckles, and age spots. Successful treatment of these conditions requires the skill of a highly-trained medical tattoo artist with years of experience in cosmetic intradermal pigmentation techniques. Judee fits the bill. Judee decided to become a permanent makeup aesthetician after living in Arizona, where, she quips, “it got so hot that my eyebrow makeup and eyeliner
12
melted right off my face!” Twenty years ago, she trained in Arizona, Texas, and Florida, learning the trade of permanent makeup and areola restoration. Now, clients come from all over Colorado and elsewhere, seeking Judee’s skill in Owner Judee Reierson applying soft, natural-looking eyebrows, eyeliner, and lip liner. In addition to her medical clients, she also works with people who are active in sports or who simply desire freedom from daily makeup application and appreciate the convenience of permanent makeup. Vicki, a Colorado Springs client, appreciates Judee’s knowledge, experience, and skill. “Judee has done my brows, eyeliner, and lip liner for over 15 years,” Vicki says. “I visit her a couple times a year. She is reliable and accommodating, and she always knows about the newest colors and techniques. I am really pleased. It makes a huge difference, especially as we age and get grayer.” Questions asked of Judee most frequently are, “Does it hurt?” and “Will it wear off?” Vicki can attest that permanent makeup application “does not cause much pain.” Judee explains that the topical anesthetics for eyebrows, liner, and breasts have improved a lot in the past few years; aftercare is minimal, with slight swelling or redness that subsides quickly. “Pain management has greatly improved,” she notes. “A tattoo doesn’t go as deep into delicate facial and breast tissue, so it requires some refresher touch-ups.” Permanent makeup in the United States began in Hollywood but has evolved into a more common cosmetic procedure. “When I first started in this field, it took a while to catch on in Colorado,” Judee says. “Interest in my work began to spread, mostly by word of mouth…or when a client just pulls up her shirt and shows her friends my work!” Judee laughs. “I love it when they are so happy!” For many years, Judee worked within the In Care of You medical boutique. When the boutique closed last fall, Judee opened an office at 1255 Lake Plaza Drive, Suite 265, in Colorado Springs. She receives referrals from several local surgeons and is available, by appointment, Monday through Saturday. Velvet and Lace and Pearls, Oh My! Prom and Wedding Trends for 2018 By Elizabeth French
From high school to the red carpet, everyone wants to feel glamorous on their special day. Whether it’s the prom or your wedding, keeping up with fashion trends while honoring your personal style can be tricky. Here are some ideas from the 2018 season to help you stand out. Prom brings an exciting opportunity to get glamorous and have fun with friends. One note of fashion caution: Schools have dress codes, even at prom! It’s smart to check before shopping to see if any styles are not allowed. Traditional styles will always be in vogue, so feel free to go for the princess dress, if that speaks to you. For a modern twist, add a bit of texture with a beaded belt, or perhaps tassel earrings and colorful shoes. Another way to add texture is by incorporating velvet. This luxurious fabric adds sophistication to any outfit, whether it is the material of the dress, shoes, or jewelry. It also goes well with a pop of glittering chunky jewelry. Illusion dresses are on trend and allow the wearer to show a hint of skin while remaining tasteful. Two-piece gowns with beaded accents and lacy tops are also on the rise for a twist on tradition. When choosing your final outfit, wear what makes you comfortable, and feel as fabulous as you are on the inside. Bridal fashion has seen many changes in the 2018 season. Several designers have decided that black is the new white and have added black accents such as bows, belts, and even full-length skirts. Channeling classic Audrey Hepburn, sweeping ruffles and tapered skirts are all draped in tulle and accented with the tiniest of lace details. Sheer corsets and pearl embellishments are also incredibly popular, adding a seductive touch for the daring bride. A twist on “something blue” was also on the runway, by Mira Zwillinger and Randy Fenoli. Layers of sky-blue tulle along with pearl accents make for a truly fairy-like gown. If you are more of a traditionalist, don’t worry. Plenty of classic silhouettes are still going strong in bridal fashion. More traditional features like lace gloves, statement bows, and beaded dresses are commonly seen. Choosing a dress for a second wedding can be hard to navigate. Queen Victoria popularized the white wedding dress, which began to symbolize the concept of the purity of a first-time bride. However, as shown in the 2018 bridal collections from many designers, brides are moving farther and farther from tradition. Therefore, when choosing a dress for a second wedding, follow the same basic rules as a first-time bride: Consider the venue, the time of year, and the overall tone of the wedding. Staying true to your personal style is also extremely important. As we mature, our tastes
mature, as well. Perhaps a cocktail dress or couture skirt or pantsuit may fit your taste. (Bonus: They really can be worn on more than one occasion!) The only thing to avoid as a second-time bride is a blusher veil to cover the face—this would likely be seen as a faux pas. Other than that, do not be afraid to flaunt your figure and dress in a way that makes you comfortable. The more confident you feel, the more excited you will be for the walk down the aisle! The mother of the bride can have an equally difficult challenge in choosing an appropriate dress; trying to stand out but not overshadow the bride or end up looking like a bridesmaid can seem as challenging as a tightrope walk. Some trends, such as pastels, neutrals, and lace, are timeless ways to blend with the wedding party. Caped dresses are also extremely popular and, with asymmetrical designs, are a twist on a ’70s trend. Tiered skirts and sheer sleeves are also a great way to flatter any figure while adding a hint of sensuality. You may think men have it easy when it comes to formalwear—after all, it’s hard to go too wrong with a basic black tuxedo. Think again! As options grow, so does the number of choices that need to be made. Men still need to select from a bevy of shirts, vests, ties, cufflinks, and shoes. Colored, printed, white, and even corduroy tuxedos are being worn on the red carpet by both men and women. No matter your personal style, the key is to follow your gut, pick pieces that speak to you, and dress in a manner that reflects who you are. A Woman’s Work
A Change of Habits Learning What Counts
By Sharon Knierim
In October of 2017, I received a damning diagnosis of lung cancer. I was pretty sure that was the end of the world— at least, the end of my world. When we receive such devastating news, all kinds of thoughts rush through our brains. Rather than being scrambled, though, our thoughts seem suddenly and entirely focused. Everything that is important and dear seems to be centered. Our lives are about to change, but how? We know that what we do next is going to be very important and will probably affect the lives of everyone around us. Friends and readers, if you have received such news or moved through the dark and scary tunnel of this type of unknown, you will already know what I am about to tell you. When there is a health crisis or emergency, everyone in the immediate circle joins together. We all share our experiences, and most of those shared experiences are well-intended and inspiring. Having or finding a good support system is paramount. If, like me, you are fortunate to have loyal friends and family members who are willing to take the journey with you, that is an absolute blessing. Facing such a challenge alone is unspeakable and, hopefully, avoidable. If you do not have a firm support system or a network
14
of people and resources, find one as soon as possible. Today, more than ever, people are willing to shoulder burdens and assist in bringing in all kinds of resources. Whether people show up at the front door with a pie or a casserole or bring the mail in from the mailbox or drive us to and from doctor appointments, don’t forget to allow these earth angels to participate. It is important for you, but it is also a way for these helpers to show how much they care. Some friends are willing to abide your perhaps less than cheerful companionship. They will sit for hours, talking about everything or nothing, or will endure long telephone conversations as they apply their magical skills at both lifting your mood and providing information.
www.womensedition.com
As you move through a diagnosis and treatment, remember: In almost every case, there are so many options available to doctors, technicians, and, of course, patients. As patients, we have rights and responsibilities. Do not be shy about asking questions. If you don’t ask, nobody will know that you are wondering. This is, of course, a good time to have a pencil and tablet ready to write down all your questions and record the answers you get when you talk to medical specialists. I have to admit that I have always preferred going to the doctor by myself. I have never enjoyed an audience sitting in the examination room, and I still don’t. However, this is no time to quibble about privacy. If you have someone you trust (and this need not necessarily be a close relative), invite that person to accompany you to doctor visits, tests, and checkups. In the end, you will be glad that you did. After all, two brains are better than one— especially if one of those brains is yours! My family and I have met what seems like the entire population of medical staff members and are extremely grateful for their candor and knowledge. If, during a journey such as this, you are less than satisfied with your medical professionals for any reason, go find a second opinion. You are, after all, the most important person in this situation. Information gathering is very important to many patients as we move toward decision-making and planning for the future. Of course, this information gathering works both ways. Do not withhold information about yourself, your condition, personal and family history, or habits from medical staff members. Like you, they need all the information possible to provide the best treatment possible. Now, it is early spring. During the past few months, I have learned much as a patient. Not only have I been blessed with wonderful medical treatment from some fabulous professionals, but I have learned what I already knew but was not focusing on. Life is precious, and the purpose of life seems to be joy. Let yourself enjoy the best that life has to offer. Remember, it’s all just right there. Sometimes, you have to look a bit for it, and, sometimes, you have to grasp it, but the treasure that is life and those who are worthy of being our greatest treasure are certainly wonderful. I don’t know about you, but I intend to have a wonderful life. I hope you do, too. WE

Feeling Pinched? Regain Your Mobility With Physical Therapy By Kylie Gumpert
When your body doesn’t move the way it should, it can impact almost every aspect of your life. It can turn simple, daily tasks into frustrating, painful, or even impossible challenges. Car accidents, sports injuries, surgery, cancer treatment, repetitive strains, and pregnancy are some of the many circumstances that can limit mobility. When restricted movement is getting in the way of your daily life, it’s time for professional intervention to help you get your life back. Physical therapists treat people of all ages by creating customized courses of physical exercises and activities that restore function, movement, and health. Physical therapy can relieve pain, heal injury, restore independence, and promote a life of wellness beyond the initial therapy. While some of these therapists work in hospital settings, the majority provide care outside of the hospital—in their own private practices, in patients’ homes, in schools or workplaces, or even in fitness centers. Before developing an individual treatment plan, a physical therapist first needs to take some steps that help her to identify whatever is causing the patient’s pain or discomfort or is impacting the patient’s ability to move freely. The first step in this process is gathering background information that helps the therapist better understand her patient’s predicament, including the patient’s medical and surgery history, habits, work and living environment, current level of functioning, and any medications she is taking. After gathering patient history, the therapist will conduct some physical tests that help her understand the patient’s current range of motion and pain level. The therapist will also identify any irregularities in how the patient walks (known as gait dysfunction). If the patient is recovering from a specific injury, the therapist will check to see how the injury is healing. Depending on what the therapist finds, additional tests such as an MRI may be required to help determine whether a mobility issue is strictly physical or is the result of a neurological disorder. Once she has a better understanding of what her patient needs, the physical therapist will develop her patient’s recovery plan and get started. Therapy sessions vary depending on the patient’s physical issues but might include the therapist physically moving or stretching a limb, massaging muscle, or using electrotherapy, ultrasound, heat, or ice to manipulate movement and ease discomfort. Along with in-person sessions, patients may also receive exercises and activities they should do outside of their scheduled appointments to improve mobility. Interestingly, physical therapy isn’t only a reactive process. Research from the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery shows that proactively participating in just two physical therapy sessions before undergoing total knee or hip replacement surgery reduces necessary postoperative care by about 30 percent.
16
Pilates, a system of exercises that improve flexibility and strength, is another proactive way to maintain health and movement. For example, physical therapy patients with multiple sclerosis may participate in Pilates exercises that help strengthen their core and improve their stability. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, there are 11 specific areas in which physical therapists may practice. These consist of acute care, aquatics, cardiovascular and pulmonary, geriatrics, home health, neurology, oncology, orthopedics, pediatrics, sports, and women’s health. Acute care is normally provided in a hospital setting and is meant for patients with severe injuries who need short-term but intensive therapy. Aquatic therapy consists of exercises done in a pool. This strategy can help patients build muscle strength, flexibility, and balance while alleviating the pressure of their own body weight. Somewhat similar to aquatic therapy is the anti-gravity treadmill, such as the AlterG. It uses an adjustable, pressurized air chamber that surrounds the lower half of a patient and reduces the amount of weight she runs or walks on. Cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy specialists focus on treatments for patients who have (or are at risk for) heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory disorders. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or breathing in pure oxygen, increases the amount of oxygen in the blood. It can increase a patient’s capacity for exercise and may be combined with physical therapy in cases of neurological disorders, wound care, or cardiopulmonary issues. Geriatric physical therapy focuses on treating older individuals. In many cases, the patients are recovering from medical treatments or surgery. Therapists may also create treatment plans for aging adults who are healthy but who want to take preventative steps toward maintaining their mobility and range of motion so they can remain independent and uninjured. Home health physical therapy is brought to the patient’s home. It is often a focus with older patients who may have had a joint replacement, bone fracture, or serious wounds. A physical therapist specializing in neurology focuses on patients with balance issues (also known as vestibular disorders) and brain injuries or disorders. Therapists will design exercises that reduce vertigo and lower a patient’s likelihood of falling. Such exercises aren’t always physical.
www.womensedition.com
According to the Vestibular Disorders Association, dizziness is sometimes caused by seeing an intense pattern, watching a movie, or being in a crowded place. Creating exercises that temporarily require a patient to view the objects or scenes that contribute to her loss of balance can eventually trick her brain into ignoring the abnormal signals it is receiving from the inner ear. Oncology physical therapy is for patients who are going through cancer treatment. This type of physical therapy is designed to help patients maintain resilience and endurance during extended treatments. Orthopedic therapy focuses on conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome or pain in the neck, back, ankles, or knees. In the case of carpal tunnel syndrome, a physical therapist who is specifically trained on how trauma and disease can impact the hand will develop a plan for rehabilitation. These therapists may also train workplaces on how to ensure their environments are set up ergonomically, so as to prevent employee injury from repetitive strain. Pediatric physical therapy serves children and often focuses on patients with developmental or genetic disorders, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, and brain injuries. Exercises are meant to increase independence and develop motor skills, so children can grow up as mobile as possible. Sports physical therapy focuses on treating athletes who sustain injuries while playing, as well as preventing injury and enhancing physical ability. Kinesiology taping has become more popular among athletes in the past several years. This stretchy tape can reduce pressure and swelling and provide stability to an injured body part. A women’s health physical therapist focuses on correcting incontinence and pelvic pain issues. She might also help patients who are suffering from complications after pregnancy, breast cancer pain, or osteoporosis. Pelvic floor therapy focuses specifically

on incontinence, organ prolapse, sexual dysfunction, and chronic pain in the pelvic area. Exercises may include pelvic floor muscle exercises (also known as Kegel exercises), vaginal weight training, and even biofeedback so patients better understand how to identify and control their pelvic floor muscles. A physical therapy technique that has become more popular in recent years is myofascial decompression, also known as “cupping,” which is based in a traditional Chinese medicine practice. Glass or bamboo cups are placed on the skin and create suction, which pulls at the skin and raises it. It can increase circulation and may be effective in pain relief for chronic neck and lower back pain, according to the journal PLOS One from the Public Library of Science. Dry needling (not to be confused with acupuncture) involves sticking needles into “trigger points” or taut muscle that is tender to the touch. Sticking needles into these points can help release tension, improving pain control and movement. Physical therapists are trained to determine the best ways for patients to regain their overall health and mobility and to avoid unnecessary healthcare procedures and services. Their holistic approach, which helps people regain their mobility and their life, is an essential part of our healthcare system. If you think you or someone you know could benefit from visiting with a physical therapist, ask for a referral from your general healthcare provider. Don’t go another day living in pain or struggling to do simple tasks, and don’t lose hope! You deserve to live a full life of independence, so go out there and let physical therapy help you regain it! Smooth Moves The Art of Buying and Selling Homes
By Robyn V. Powell
With the arrival of springtime comes the promise of new beginnings and the drive to move our lives forward. If you’ve been considering a move, spring is the perfect time to set your plans in motion. What better time to transition to a new chapter in your life? It’s no wonder the month of May is considered the “magic window” for home sales. According to Consumer Reports, homes listed for sale in May sell more quickly and for higher prices than at any other time of the year. Whether you’re downsizing or upsizing, moving across town or around the world, buying or selling your home is very likely one of the largest financial transactions you will make. Having the right people to make the process go smoothly is key. A realtor with knowledge of the market and good negotiating skills can make the difference between a successful transaction and one that falls apart. Start by asking friends or family for referrals in your target area. Once you have a couple of names, call each realtor and take the time to ask some essential questions. How long has she been a realtor? Is she familiar with the area? Is she equipped to deal with your unique situation? Does she have experience working with both buyers and sellers? What is the average selling time of the homes she sells? Check at least three
references, and ask specifically if there are any reasons you should not work with this realtor. Before signing any contract, read it carefully. Pay close attention to details such as time limits on how long an agent has to sell your property. While most contracts are 30–120 days, some can be a year or longer. Check the terms carefully, as they are binding. Find out how a realtor plans to market your home. Most buyers begin their search for properties online, so it’s important that your home is marketed online using professional photos that will show your property in its very best light. Buyers want to be able to visualize themselves living in a home. Instead of making them work hard to imagine what it could be like to live there, make it easy for people to feel at home from the moment they walk through the door. Declutter and depersonalize your home as much as possible by removing ›››

personal photos, memorabilia, and any furniture that blocks traffic flow. Consider hiring a stager, who will bring the objectivity required to ensure that your home appeals to the tastes of others. The best stagers will work with what you have, rearranging your belongings. Sometimes, this means allocating things to the garage or to a storage facility. While this may be inconvenient, a well-staged home that can meet and even exceed buyers’ expectations is more likely to sell in the shortest amount of time and at the best price. To position yourself to get the best price on a real estate purchase, get pre-approved for a mortgage before you go shopping. Sellers will take you more seriously, which can be important in a market where they are receiving multiple offers. Make your offer more attractive by limiting contingencies, such as not having to sell your own home before closing on the purchase. Base your offer on the home’s value rather than on the listing price. The best way to evaluate the market is to look at the recent sales of comparable homes in the area. These “comps” give you and your agent the information and ammunition to ensure your offer is where it should be. If a home is priced at market value or below, you are unlikely to get it for less. If, however, the house is priced above market value and has been on the market awhile, a lower offer supported by a market analysis may get you the home. This is where a good realtor is invaluable. Whether you’re buying or selling, it’s important to know what buyers look for when purchasing a home. While location and school district are always important factors, most buyers also prefer a home in move-in condition. Have roofing, foundation, electrical wiring, furnace, and air conditioning systems checked and repaired before listing your home to avoid any surprises during inspection. Any upgrades you make can be used as selling points by your realtor. A fresh coat of neutral paint and replacing stained carpet are inexpensive fixes that may improve your return on investment. Take care to boost curb appeal, as first impressions matter. If your home’s exterior is uninviting, you may not get buyers through the door! Make your move this spring! You can settle into your new home before the blistering heat of summer and begin the next chapter of your life in comfort. Out and About
Premier MediSpa LLC Transforming Natural Beauty By Libby Kinder
Aren’t the best rejuvenation procedures the ones that no one can tell you’ve undergone? That’s what you’ll get at Premier MediSpa, notes longtime patient Virginia. She, too, wants natural-looking results. “People should just see you as healthy, youthful, and well-rested,” she says. She raves about her extraordinary experience at Premier MediSpa and wants to share it “so that others seeking treatment will feel confident in choosing to have procedures performed by the Blands.” The Blands she refers to are Gregory Bland, MD, and Gerty Bland, RN, BSN. They are the co-owners of Premier MediSpa. Dr. Bland is the medical director and board-certified plastic surgeon who performs surgical cosmetic procedures including face lifts, body contouring, and augmentation at his nationally accredited in-house Center for Plastic Surgery, P.C. Dr. Bland’s wife, Gerty, works closely with her husband in all aspects of the two businesses. “A great advantage of Premier MediSpa is that Dr. Bland is an in-house plastic surgeon in our spa,” Gerty explains. “Through his training, he knows aesthetically what kind of surgery is needed.” Another advantage of using services at Premier MediSpa is the high level of privacy and confidentiality offered in comparison to a hospital environment. Premier MediSpa is an amazing one-stop choice for beauty transformation. The full-service spa includes traditional spa services such as laser hair removal, massage, facials, hair design, waxing, and permanent makeup. In addition, Premier MediSpa is the only spa in Colorado Springs that also includes noninvasive, minimally invasive, and plastic cosmetic rejuvenation procedures of the face and body via the Center for Plastic Surgery. Their operating room is nationally accredited (by the AAAHC), meeting all safety requirements and high standards of practice. Some of the treatments available include neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) and fillers, Vanquish and CoolSculpting (fat reduction), elõs laser treatments (wrinkle reduction, pigmentation correction, and skin tightening), and VelaShape III (cellulite and firming treatment). Dr. Bland and Gerty take great pride in employing a friendly and professional staff and providing a wide variety of beauty enhancing services. Patient Susan observes, “Dr. Bland’s surgery was the best and most comfortable. He and his staff have comfort and cosmetic improvement mastered! Truly speaks volumes of his expertise and experience.” Gerty adds, “We make people happy and make them feel younger through our procedures. Women are living into their 80s and 90s, and they want to look and feel good about themselves.” Premier MediSpa is the number-one user of neuromodulators and fillers in southern Colorado. These

are the most popular services offered. Fillers typically last up to 9–12 months, while Botox typically lasts for 3 months. Gerty and her nursing staff have over Gregory Bland, MD, and Gerty Bland, 20 years of experience with services that reduce wrinkles RN, BSN and fine lines and replace lost volume in the face and neck area. Most patients are referred by word of mouth. Some have been coming to Dr. Bland and his staff for up to 23 years—now, that’s loyalty! Premier MediSpa is the only place in the Colorado Springs area that offers a fat reduction combo nicknamed “Fire and Ice” that combines CoolSculpting and Vanquish procedures. People of all ages want to look and feel better, and Gerty and Dr. Bland are pleased to be able to offer these popular services. Gerty related one story as an example of why she has spent her career engaging in this rewarding work. Recently, a woman was referred to the clinic eight months after her son had committed suicide. She was, of course, devastated, depressed, and frequently tearful. This patient was having a difficult time managing her sadness related to this heart-wrenching event, and the relative who referred her felt she could benefit from a boost to her self-esteem. She received Botox and fillers, which resulted in her face looking rejuvenated and well-rested. This gave her the push she needed to begin to climb out of the black hole she had been in. Dr. Bland works closely with his patients to help them focus on enhancing natural looks and beauty with an outcome that is not false in any way. “Our ultimate goal is customer service, and we attempt to create natural results.” One example of Dr. Bland putting his philosophy into practice is creating naturally sized breasts that complement a woman’s body instead of detracting from it. If you want to look younger and fresher without looking like you’ve had work done, get in touch with Dr. Bland and Gerty. Premier MediSpa offers complimentary consultations and continues to expand, with plans for the addition of a fifth RN. The facility is located at 3920 North Union Boulevard, Suite 250, in Colorado Springs. To learn more about how Premier MediSpa can help with beauty enhancement and transformation through both spa and medical services, please call 719-599-7768. Hope for Arthritis Latest Treatments for a Better Life
By Linda Barnes
Although arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States, with more than 50 million adults and 300,000 children affected, much hope exists for successful treatment. Joint disease and joint pain can be treated with the latest in medications, surgery, and other strategies to assist in its management. Don’t despair if joint pain is diminishing your zest for life—instead, get help! Two main forms account for most instances of the joint pain that we call arthritis. They have similar effects—joint stiffness and pain—but very different root causes. Osteoarthritis is often referred to as “wear and tear” joint disease. Damage to joints results from injury or from use over time. Rheumatoid arthritis is very different in its cause. An autoimmune disease, it occurs when one’s immune system attacks healthy tissue, causing inflammation and pain in a joint. Your primary care doctor may provide help with mild to moderate symptoms. For more severe pain or in cases where immune response is suspected, you’ll likely be referred to a rheumatologist. This is a medical specialty in which an internal medicine doctor or pediatrician receives years of additional training in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases and autoimmune conditions that affect muscles, joints, and bone. On completion of these studies, the doctor can become boardcertified in rheumatology. Of the two main categories, osteoarthritis (OA) is most prevalent in the United States. This is not surprising when you consider our aging population; most OA is associated with advancing age. Exceptions are OA caused by injury or by repetitive movements. Normal joint use over decades breaks down the cartilage or cushion between joints, causing stiffness, swelling, and pain. Osteoarthritis can occur in any joint but occurs most often in knees, hips, lower back, neck, and fingers. When cartilage wears away, the bones of the joint eventually become damaged. Treatment includes over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medicines. Working with a trainer or a physical therapist to strengthen muscles around joints may help. If excess body weight is contributing to the pain, losing weight can be beneficial. My husband got initial relief from steroid injections into his knee joint and by wearing a special knee brace. A scope of his knee to remove fragments of meniscus, along with physical therapy, helped for a time but could not eliminate the pain from OA. Eventually, he underwent a successful total knee replacement. Joint replacement by an orthopedic surgeon can restore your ability to move and enjoy everyday activities again. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is another story. It
can strike at any age but more often affects adults 60 years or older. New cases are two to three times higher in women. Genetics also figure in your likelihood to develop RA. Since it results from your own immune system attacking tissue in your joints, it can come on rather suddenly, often in the hands, wrists, and knees. Inflammation and damage can cause significant pain, trouble walking, and even deformity. If RA is suspected, early treatment is essential to limit permanent damage to the joints. RA can also cause problems with the heart, lungs, and eyes. A rheumatologist will review any preliminary tests your primary doctor has done and may order additional tests such as a blood analysis, x-ray, CT, or MRI to assess joint issues. A customized treatment plan might include medications, physical therapy, injections, or a referral to another specialist. The goal with RA treatment is not only pain relief and improved quality of life but actual remission of the disease. People with RA often experience fatigue, weakness, and even depression. Besides genetics, other lifestyle choices can impact the disease. Smoking is believed to not only increase your risk of getting RA but to make the disease worse if you already have RA. Obesity is another risk factor. Treatment often includes use of prescription medications called DMARDs (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs) to slow the progression and prevent damage to joints. Several different DMARDs can be tried to find the best one; they can also be used in combination. Biologics might be used where DMARDs are not effective. Along with the latest medications, RA often responds to strategies such as physical activity at home or at the gym, selfmanagement education, physical therapy, quitting smoking, and losing weight. If depression is making matters worse, it should also be treated. Therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation, and massage may facilitate a better sense of well-being. Alternative options such as vitamins, supplements, acupuncture, or braces may be helpful for arthritis, but you should always get input from your physician. Hot and cold treatments or electrical stimulation may help ease discomfort. WE March 2018

Smoothing Out the Creases A Wrinkle Reduction Field Guide By Loretta McCollum
Be honest. Do you look in the mirror, press your fingers to your hairline, and lift, imagining your face minus the Gordon Ramsey forehead or the Cro-Magnon creases between the eyebrows? Maybe you pull back the skin around your mouth, trying to smooth out those deep jowl lines. Have turtlenecks and scarves become wardrobe staples? If you said yes to any of the above, keep reading, my friends. If the eyes are a window to the soul, then the wrinkles around them must be a topographical map of our life. That’s fine, but does this map really need to show each crater, valley, and ridge with such clarity? The emergence of lines and wrinkles is inevitable, but we can help prevent and minimize our map’s contours. Aging is one obvious cause of wrinkles. After age 20, our bodies produce one percent less collagen each year, which means our skin elasticity is reduced. Our oil and sweat glands also slow production as we age, and the underlying facial fat layers diminish—all of this leads to dry, thinning, wrinkle-prone skin. Environmental and genetic factors also play a role. Prolonged sun exposure damages the skin’s elastin fibers, increasing the prevalence of wrinkles. Make sure to apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and to use skin products with built-in sunscreen. Dermatologists and day spas are good sources for quality skin care options. Squinting in the sun promotes the development of crow’s feet, so
don some stylish UV-protective shades before you head outside. Eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and avoiding tobacco products all help keep our skin soft and smooth. Foods containing vitamin B help form new skin cells, and vitamins C and E contain natural antioxidants. A good night’s sleep helps skin replenish and renew. If you’re a smoker, here’s one more reason to quit: Smoking reduces the blood supply to the skin, inhibiting skin cell renewal. Proper hydration keeps your skin supple. Like all body cells, skin cells primarily contain water. If your skin isn’t hydrated, it’s more likely to dry out, accelerating wrinkle emergence. Your doctor, dermatologist, or dietician can recommend vitamin-enriched skin creams, nutrition guidelines, or wellness plans. Nothing can prevent wrinkling entirely, so we must also consider wrinkle-wrestling treatments. Topical treatments are examples

of noninvasive techniques. Prescriptionstrength Retin-A is a topical treatment that has been around for over 30 years and has been scientifically proven to reverse sun damage and prevent future damage. Chemical peels apply an acidic solution to the skin, dissolving its outer layer, which then sheds off over several days, revealing new, fresher-looking skin. These peels can be light, moderate, or deep. The level of the peel determines whether the procedure is performed by an aesthetician or a physician. Downtime is minimal. Results appear after a few days, and treatments can be repeated after several weeks. Laser and ultrasound treatments use laser light or ultrasonic waves to address wrinkles. Laser light therapy destroys the outer skin layer as it heats up the underlying layers, stimulating collagen production. Ultherapy is an ultrasonic therapy that uses a wand to deliver sonic wave blasts over the targeted area. The ultrasonic waves stimulate collagen production, plumping up the skin. This can usually be done over a lunch hour. Minimally invasive choices include Botox injections and collagen or fat fillers. Botox is injected directly into a wrinkle, blocking chemical signals that cause the surrounding muscles to contract. The muscles then relax, minimizing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The effects are temporary, and injections are typically repeated every three months. Collagen and fat injections plump up skin cells, smoothing out their appearance. This treatment can be used on different areas of the face and is often applied to the lips. If you’re wondering when your lips went from plump and pouty to looking like a shriveled-up string bean, fear not. Cosmetic fillers will let you give Angelina Jolie a run for her lip money! Dermabrasion involves planing the skin with a rotating instrument. Under local anesthesia, the outer layer is removed to expose newer, younger-looking skin. Microdermabrasion, an exfoliation-like procedure, is a more superficial version of the technique; giving the skin a softer appearance. Those of us looking for a more drastic and long-term solution should consider surgery like face and neck lifts. Performed by plastic surgeons, these procedures remove excess skin while lifting and tightening muscles and tissue. Patients need several days of downtime following the procedure, but the results last up to 10 years. Colorado Foot and Ankle Relief for Long-Suffering Feet By Ariel Heart
Let’s face it—most of us take our feet for granted. We expect a lot of them, but we don’t give them a lot in return. Our feet endure the full weight of our bodies, the pounding of walking or running, and the pinch of fashionable but often uncomfortable shoes. We may treat our feet to the occasional pedicure, but that doesn’t make up for the punishment they face! Colorado Foot and Ankle specializes in getting you back on your feet when something goes wrong. The practice has eight support staff members and three doctors: Dr. Eric Gessner, Dr. Bryan Groth (who was the first in this area to perform a total ankle replacement), and Dr. Jacob Fassman. They handle everything below the knee, including surgical care, palliative care, and diabetic foot care (including wound healing). Typical surgeries include bunions, hammertoes, ankle scopes, and lateral ankle stabilizations, to mention just a few. They see a fair share of stress fractures in hikers and joggers, too. Rebecca White, the practice manager, has been
l-r: Drs. Jacob Fassman, Eric Gessner, and Bryan Groth
with Colorado Foot and Ankle since they opened in 2013. “The doctors are very patient-oriented,” she shares. “They look at what the best care will be for each patient, from a simple procedure to a more complicated surgery. They consider the whole picture for the whole person.” Rebecca enjoys working in this busy but cohesive practice, where everyone from the front office to the back billing works as a team. (They have even seen former employees return because they missed the group!) They understand how complicated insurance can be, and they work together in their patients’ best interests. When a new patient comes to them, they typically research what care that patient’s insurance will cover and then relay that information back to the patient.

At first it was a stab in the dark; would this form of exposure work or would I need to look for another venue to get my services noticed? I have been very pleased with the quality of the magazine, the staff I have worked with, and most of all the quality of prospects who have become wonderful clients. I wholeheartedly recommend advertising in this publication.” —Pauli Hubbard, CFP with Creative Financial Services, Inc.

Patients at Colorado Foot and Ankle enjoy the benefits of visiting a group practice, as Rebecca explains. Having three qualified doctors instead of just one means that patients benefit from their combined experience in many different kinds of surgery and wound care techniques. Also, it makes scheduling a breeze. “We are always available. If a patient needs to get in immediately, we can make that happen,” Rebecca shares. Jackie Saubert drives all the way from Pueblo West—45 minutes each way—for her appointments at Colorado Foot and Ankle. Jackie has unique challenges due to diabetes with neuropathy. She tried to find care closer to her home and was treated poorly, she says. “I felt like I was being pushed in and pushed out.” In one instance, her wound simply failed to heal. She returned to Colorado Foot and Ankle, where her wound healed and where she was treated with respect. She knows all the staff and emphasizes how kind they are. Their thorough care helped to identify that a medication Jackie was taking for another condition could cause complications during certain procedures; now, she is better informed and prepared. It is no surprise that several of her family members and friends are now patients after they heard Jackie’s glowing recommendation. “They treat you like family,” she says. Dr. Fassman joined the practice eight months ago after practicing for eight years in New Jersey. He and his wife visited
Colorado to ski and discussed how they would like to move here permanently. They are outdoorsy people who enjoy hiking, biking, and skiing. The Fassmans have three children—a fifthgrader, a third-grader, and a preschooler. They are looking forward to staying in Colorado for the long term. “What I like about podiatry is that the majority of the patients I see typically leave feeling better that very same day,” Dr. Fassman shares. “It’s not like when you see your family doctor for a cough or a cold or other issue, when you take some medicine, but it may take a few days or weeks to feel better. We are very hands-on. Typically, if you walk in with pain, you will walk out feeling better.” Dr. Fassman’s father is a practicing podiatrist, and Dr. Fassman is pleased to be following in his father’s footsteps. Take care of your feet so they can take care of you! Where’s Your Passion? Go Search for It
By Janet Van deWalle
“There is no passion to be found playing small—in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” —Nelson Mandela; revolutionary, politician, philanthropist Today, I was having a conversation with an old friend. He’s frustrated about his career path, and he thought he would be further ahead at this point in the game. I suggested he change his career path and do something that would make him excited to get out of bed in the morning. Like many people, he kind of stumbled into his career. He didn’t intend to go into the field he’s been in for the last 15 years, and I think it’s finally catching up with him. Some people are quite content to play the role they landed, but others just become restless—that’s who I’m speaking to here. There’s no benefit for you to stay in a situation (professional or personal) where there is no passion, no excitement, no commitment. That’s not to say that every day should leave you fulfilled and brimming with joy, but more days should be like that than are not. “If you feel like there’s something out there that you’re supposed to be doing, if you have a passion for it, then stop wishing and just do it.” —Wanda Sykes; comedian As I look around at the people in my life, the ones who seem happiest are the ones who are doing something they are passionate w

Honoring Individuality Accept Your Children for Who They Are Most people like to compare things. That’s why there are Top Ten lists that tell us how the reviewer feels about any manner of subject. Those reading the list can agree or disagree. Sometimes, arguments arise over what is best or why it is best. Many activities are rated during this time of year. The Super Bowl, the Academy Awards, March Madness, and the Olympics are only a few entities that reward those deemed “the best” by comparison to (hopefully) their peers. It’s okay to compare things that are measurable. We shouldn’t compare when it comes to people…especially when it comes to our children. I have two brothers. They are as different as night and day in many ways: physically (one is blond, the other dark), athletically (one did well at team sports, the other fared better in individual contests), academically (one was more studious than the other), and socially (one is an extrovert, the other more introverted). I have two sons who compare similarly to their uncles in physical appearance (one light, the other dark). Athletically, they both played team sports when they were younger, but one branched into individual contests as he got older. Educationally, their levels of schooling are similar. Although one is more outgoing than the other, they both are highly regarded by their friends. I have two grandsons, who are also very different. Although neither has reached his full growth (they’re 16 and nearly 18), one has a larger frame than the other. One appears more

interested in learning or more readily imparts what he knows than the other. Athletically, one showed some natural talent when younger, while the other has more interest in rules… neither has focused on sports. Finally, one is more social than the other. Can I pick favorites? A definite NO! I love both of my brothers. One died before I really got to know him as an adult. The other and I are friends and see each other often. I also love both of my sons. I see one more often than the other because our interests intersect more, but I enjoy the company of both. I love both of my grandsons equally, too. I spend more time with one because he likes to come to the lake and take road trips and the other prefers staying home to traveling. Whether brother, son, or grandson, I appreciate these men who are in my life for their individuality. Their differences enrich my life. As they share their interests with me, they enhance and increase mine. As I meet their friends, I see the richness in their lives, and my life becomes richer. Would I change any of them? No way! Catagonia Cat Hotel
Unparalleled Feline-Only Boarding By Beatrice Brightman
Cat guardian Shannan Longley takes pride in providing luxurious care for the felines of Colorado Springs. She is the go-to source of relief for people who need a safe haven to ensure quality treatment of their cats when they are away. What is this magical haven for cats? It’s the Catagonia Cat Hotel. Shannan first had the idea for creating Catagonia Cat Hotel because she struggled to find adequate longterm care for her own cats when she was away from home. Travel was a normal component of Shannan’s military career, and finding quality cat care was a serious problem. She soon realized that the Colorado Springs area needed a solution! Once she had recognized a promising opportunity to meet a need, Shannan invested herself in the effort to pursue it. Shannan’s dream of creating a luxury cat hotel developed into a full-time commitment. She earned her MBA with the intention of applying all she learned into planning for her business. “I knew I wanted to do this for years and years,” she shares. “I believe cats are overlooked and underrated. They need a voice! The pet industry focuses almost exclusively on dogs. I thought that needed to change.” Why focus her business exclusively on cats? “Cats have a bad reputation,” Shannan continues. “I think that is just unfair. They’re incredible animals.” Shannan believed that Colorado Springs would be a favorable city to develop and launch her business based on the considerable number of people in the area living a military lifestyle similar to her own. She opened Catagonia Cat Hotel with the goal of ending cat owners’ struggles to find quality, caring, and compassionate feline boarding. Shannan attributes the design and building of the facility to her father. “I could not have done this without my dad,” she shares. “We designed it together.” The result is a beautifully airy space, boasting countless features that visiting cats are sure to adore. Features of the hotel include cat walks, perches, and hiding places galore. Each cat condo is eight feet tall, and they come in different sizes: 4 feet by 4 feet, 4 feet by 8 feet, and 8 feet by 8 feet. (If you have more than one cat, they can room together or separately, but cats are never boarded in a condo with cats from another family.) One of the most cat-friendly features of Catagonia Cat Hotel is the peace and quiet. Six months ago, a client named Amber had the need to look at boarding options for her cat, Aspen. Relatively new to caregiving for cats, Amber learned that cats are really bothered by the loud barking that you often hear in a facility that boards both cats and dogs. Amber says, “Catagonia is

a really unique facility. It’s very cat-friendly. They play classical music; it’s very quiet and peaceful. The air ventilation system is attached to each room, so there is no Owner Shannan Longley litter box odor. It is a very contemporary and modern facility.” Amber also greatly appreciates the kindness of the staff at Catagonia. “It takes away from your time if you’re worried for your pet,” she notes. “It really means a lot to know they are okay. Then you can fully enjoy your time away.” Catagonia Cat Hotel sells cat toys, beds, climbing posts, catnip products, and more! They have also added other valuable services to better serve their clients’ needs. A certified feline consultant can make home visits to address behavioral questions. Shannan is a Certified Feline Master Groomer (CFMG) and trained at the National Cat Groomers Institute of America, as well. She stresses how important it is for cats to be groomed regularly to remove oil buildup and dandruff caused by saliva from licking themselves which can also leave their fur matted and tangled. She states they offer everything from nail trims to Lion Cuts and everything in between. Long-haired cats can receive a belly shave or sanitary trim for those who have difficulty keeping their hind areas clean. Shannan says that some cats really love being trimmed and groomed which results in their personalities really shining. She is delighted to be able to serve her community in this way. “What I love the most is providing a service and facility that offers such an incredible amount of relief to cat owners,” she shares. Shannan continues to find creative ways to be a positive force in the cat community. She donates two of her condos to Happy Cats Haven to be used by cats that do not do well in a shelter environment. If grooming is likely to improve a cat’s chances for adoption, cats temporarily cared for by Wild Blue Animal Rescue can enjoy parlor time with Shannan, free of charge. Visit catagoniacathotel.com or call 719-602-6081 for more information or to make a reservation for your cat(s). Feel free to stop by to meet the staff and tour the facility, which is located at 4703 Centennial Boulevard, in Colorado Springs. WE

Day Care for Dogs and Cats Is Your Pet Ready to Board? By Elizabeth French
Whether you’re going on a vacation or working long hours at the office, you’ll need somewhere for your pet to stay sooner or later. Finding care for your pet can be a stressful task. How do you know if your pet is getting good care while you’re not there? Good news—the pet boarding industry is growing, so it’s easier than ever to find a great place for your pet to take a break. If you’re going out of town, be sure to make reservations early. The peak season for pet boarding is typically during the summer months and at Christmas and other major holidays—just when you and everyone else is likely to go on a trip. Staying in town? There is a cornucopia of doggy day cares that will groom, feed, and give your dog plenty of playtime with other dogs so you won’t have to come home to a rambunctious rover at the end of a long work day. Some pet boarders have entire facilities dedicated to the task. Places like your local groomer, veterinarian, or even some private homes may also be open to caring for your dog or cat (some places take dogs and cats; some are devoted to one type of animal only). With popular services such as 24/7 on-site care and an on-call veterinarian, temperature-controlled environments, walks twice a day, and unlimited playtime, doggy day care can be a social dog’s dream come true. Some facilities offer one-on-one play and even spa-like services to create the perfect relaxing getaway! Some boarders offer electronic monitoring, allowing you to check on your pet any time, day or night, in real time. Cats can be pampered as much as their canine compatriots. Private “apartments” with climbing towers and separate litter boxes, individual playtime with staff members, and the option to room in with other cats from the same household are some common features. Cats are notoriously picky eaters, so it will probably help lower everyone’s anxiety level if you bring your cat’s favorite food. Be sure your kennel separates large and small dogs. Larger dogs can see their smaller counterparts as prey, and innocent playing can turn into a dangerous situation if not monitored properly. The best practice is to have separate areas for different sizes of dogs, to avoid any unhealthy conflict. Always take a tour of a boarding facility before booking a stay for your pet. Trusting your instincts as well as your five senses will give you an indication of whether a place is right for you. Any offensive odors or lack of ventilation can be indicative of unsanitary conditions and may lead to common ailments such as “kennel cough” or worse. Even the busiest of kennels should not reek of doggy odors. Next, inspect the kennels themselves to ensure they are tidy, clean, and properly ventilated. Don’t be afraid to ask how often the kennels are cleaned. Indoor and outdoor running areas should also maintain their
cleanliness. All reputable and qualified boarders should be more than willing to show potential clients where their dogs are kept and exercised. If they are not, walk out and don’t look back. Many boarders require proof of vaccinations prior to check-in. This policy helps ensure the safety of all the animals on the premises. Be sure to ask whether a veterinarian is on call. If your pet requires medicine or other special treatment, bring it up before booking. Some facilities are specifically geared toward pets with special needs. Separation anxiety is common, especially if your pet has never stayed away from home without you. Anxiety can manifest itself in many ways, so look for behaviors such as excessive barking or whining, destroying objects, or scratching doors and walls. To calm them as much as possible, bring their favorite toys, treats, and blankets, so they have the smells of home to relax them while you are away. Even a pillowcase that smells like you would be a welcome reprieve from all the foreign smells of a kennel. Before leaving your dog with a boarder or doggy day care for an extended stay, it is also possible to work on your pet’s anxiety by leaving it for shorter periods of time, gradually building up. Your veterinarian can offer other helpful suggestions. If your dog is naturally social, look for a kennel with a busy schedule for its dogs. Finding a kennel with plenty of exercise time, walking, and socialization with other dogs can alleviate stress and can be great fun for your dog. Once you have selected a place that fits your needs, be sure to make good-byes short, sweet, and upbeat. Animals can sense your emotions. The more excited you are to get on with your vacation, the happier your pet will be! Orthopedic Surgery for the Upper Body Put Your Joints Back in Motion
By Ashley Anderson
Sometimes, we take for granted the mobility of our bodies and the role that our fully-functioning joints play in our lives. Typing on a keyboard at work, playing ball with our kids, and crossing the finish line in a marathon all depend on the ability of our joints. When our joints are not at peak performance, it can be difficult to enjoy life—we end up sitting on the sidelines, perhaps unable to perform even basic functions like walking, waving, or grasping objects. When upper body joints like fingers, wrists, elbows, and shoulders go bad, it can be difficult to perform tasks and limiting to the enjoyment of everyday life. There are a number of things you can do to help prevent this from happening. To keep your joints in top shape, it is important to take care of your body. This includes keeping fit, protecting your body during activity, and maintaining a proper diet. Make sure to stretch frequently. You should wear protective gear when participating in activities like roller skating or rock climbing, and it’s important to know (and respect) your limits when it comes to exerting stress on your joints. Don’t lift too much weight or repeat a single motion too frequently. Maintain a healthy weight, consume joint-healthy foods like milk and fish, and take a daily supplement for joint support. Your primary care physician can answer specific questions you may have about joint care.
Joint pain can be anywhere from mild to severe, and it can occur for a number of reasons, including arthritis, injury, or inflammation. Pain can set on at any time, and it may last for a short period of time or drag on for months. If you are experiencing joint pain, you should see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Your doctor may refer you to an orthopedic specialist for additional care. Joint pain is not just for seniors experiencing arthritis. Anyone can experience joint pain. Hands can become stiff, pain can occur in shoulders and elbows, and wrists can become sore at any age. Joint pain often occurs when the cartilage within the joint is damaged, causing bones to rub against one another. Treatment for joint pain can range from short-term, nonsurgical treatment to a full surgical procedure. Non-surgical treatment may include medication for pain or inflammation, physical therapy, and resting the joint (if injury has occurred). In more severe cases, patients may require an orthopedic surgical procedure, during which adjustments are made to the liga-

ments, cartilage, or bone of the joint. In cases like “trigger finger,” where patients experience a pinched tendon in the hand, surgery is performed to release the impacted tendon. Carpal tunnel surgery is another hand surgery performed to remove ligament pressure on nerves and relieve symptoms. In other cases, total joint replacement is necessary. Typically done on knees and hips, this procedure is becoming more common for upper body joints, as well, including ankles, wrists, shoulders, and elbows. Total joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which parts of damaged joints are removed and are replaced with a device called a prosthesis. The prosthesis is made of metal, plastic, or ceramic materials, and it’s designed to replicate the movement of a normal, healthy joint. This procedure is performed by an orthopedic surgeon. Your family physician should be able to recommend a reputable orthopedic surgeon, should you need one. She should be a specialized physician, board-certified in surgery and orthopedic medicine. Joint replacement surgery typically takes a few hours and is performed in a hospital or outpatient medical facility. Joint replacement surgeries are commonly covered by insurance if the procedure is deemed necessary. Postoperative recovery may vary based on the joint replaced and the patient. It can range from a couple of weeks to several months. You should be able to move your new joint shortly after surgery and begin rehabilitation toward full movement and function. Exercise and physical therapy will likely be part of the rehabilitation plan. Your orthopedic surgeon will discuss your postoperative plan with you following surgery. Look forward to improved mobility and relieved symptoms for up to 20 years, depending on your particular case. Consult with your physician on the longevity of joint replacement. If you are experiencing joint pain, suffer no longer! Inquire with your doctor about the cause and treatment options available to you. If joint replacement surgery is required, find a reputable surgeon and discuss your surgical care plan. After surgery, you should be on the mend toward pain-free mobility and an enjoyable everyday life. Sources for this article included: webmd.com, orthoinfo.aaos.org, and learn.org. WE

Spring Landscaping Projects The Time to Plan is Now!
By Anne Yankus
Spring is just around the corner, so it’s time to think about starting all the new landscaping projects you want done this season! Last month, we took a look at some softscaping ideas, like trees, turf, and garden plots. This month, let’s focus on the more permanent fixtures in your yard, like patios, retaining walls, water features, and outdoor kitchens. These features are known as hardscaping. There are so many features you can install in your yard, but some of the most basic are retaining walls, patios, walkways, and driveways. Retaining walls can be made of a variety of materials, including concrete blocks, stone veneer, poured concrete, bricks, wood, dry stone or boulders, and gabion. Patios and walkways can be made of concrete, natural stone, brick, gravel, tile, pavers, or a mix of multiple materials. Driveways can be made of concrete, pavers, asphalt, or loose materials like gravel or crushed shell. One thing that most of us in the northern half of the country have to take into consideration is shoveling snow. Getting up early to clear the driveway before you can even leave for work is the worst! Have you considered a heated driveway? They work by using a radiant heat flooring system (similar to what can be installed indoors to keep the tile floor cozy in your master bath). This can be accomplished with electrical wiring or a series
of tubes through which heated water or antifreeze is pumped. Depending on your current setup, you may not even need to pave a whole new driveway to install a heating system. There are many factors to consider, including the proximity of trees, soil composition, and more, so you’ll want to consult a professional to determine the cost and ease of installation. To kick your yard up a notch, why not install a water feature? Ponds can be created in small pots or by digging out a small section of your yard, and they often feature aquatic plants and fish. Waterfalls bring the soothing sound of falling water to your yard. They can be built from scratch with a little help from a landscape professional. Another popular yard idea is a fireplace or fire pit. Some things to keep in mind when considering installing an outdoor fireplace are placement (for both the unit and any adjacent

seating), what sort of fireplace you intend it to be (wood-burning or gas), and style. “Built-in” fireplaces that share a wall with your house are a popular style, and both “built-in” and freestanding fireplaces can be made out of many different types of materials (such as stone, marble, brick, or even fire-resistant glass). If you want a fire feature without adding an entire fireplace and chimney, a fire pit may be more your style. From the simplest metal bowl to a custom-built stone- or brickringed pit, fire pits are a nice addition to any yard. If you really want to go all out, there is the ultimate yard addition: the outdoor kitchen. Outdoor kitchens aren’t just your parents’ barbecue grill on the patio anymore; they can be anything from a deluxe grill and seating to a full-on outdoor range, oven, and countertops! The only limit is how much space you have (and how much money you want to spend). If you’ve got a good handle on what you want in your yard and where you want it to go, you can probably skip straight to the landscape contractors and have them get started. If you’ve come up a little short when sorting out your overall plan, hiring a landscape designer first is definitely the way to go. Some landscape designers will even hire their own contractors to complete the work they’ve designed for you. Professionals can also help with long-term planning. A good landscape designer can help you figure out what you can install now, within your yearly budget, that will help you accomplish your ultimate yard goals over time. After all, not every project can or should be crammed in before next winter. Let your professionals help you figure out what to do first and how to build your budget around small sub-projects that will lead to your ultimate goal: your dream yard. Who you hire depends, of course, on how much you want to spend, how complicated your projects are, and how quickly you want them done. Take the time to set up a good communication rapport with your landscape professionals. The better they know you and what you want, the better they’ll be able to get your projects done right. Positive Perspective
Alter Your Attitude Seek Your Joy How is your day going? Have you made a decision to look for those things that make you feel good while seeing and/or doing them? Are you feeling alive, happy, passionate? As you read these words, is your gut reaction “She is describing me to a T” or one of “Who is she—Pollyanna reincarnated?” “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” —William James The great thing about being on this planet is that every single moment of every single day, we get to decide how we are going to feel. We have the freedom to make the decision that we are going to take our present moment and seek our joy—or we can take this moment and make the decision to be miserable. “Your choices of actions may be limited—but your choices of thought are not.” —Abraham/Hicks Making the decision to look for those things that make us feel good allows the Universe the ability to deliver to us what we have been asking for. Making the decision to continue to see and do those things that make us feel bad will continue to deliver to us the life that we keep saying we don’t want. By making a conscious decision

to cultivate and nurture those thoughts that feel good while we’re thinking them, will not only make us feel good while we’re doing them, it will also change this experience that we call reality. “Practice scenarios that feel good—and never mind reality. Reality is only a brief moment in time that you keep repeating.” —Abraham/Hicks So, how do we start? It’s very simple. Take a moment and write down those things that feel good to you. “Raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens….” Write down those things that make you smile. Write down those things that make you feel good while they’re happening, that make you feel appreciative. Write down those people who bring you joy. Then, every day, before you get out of bed, take time to pluck a few of them off the page and make them come alive in your mind. Make a decision to create, in this moment, a joyful experience of your reality! “The remarkable thing we have is a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.” —Charles Swindoll
