Editor’s Notes

Valentine’s Day…Not Always Hearts and Flowers Welcome to the first month of the year! Oh, wait, that’s the Roman Calendar. We’ve talked about this in the past, and it amuses me. The Roman calendar only had 10 months, which is why the final month would be December (meaning “ten”). Whether it is month number one or month number three, March is a particularly special month for me this year, as I will get to meet my second grandson, who is due March 6th. Later in the month, I will celebrate from afar as my son, Adam, and daughter-in-law, Sally, celebrate their…wait for it…18th wedding anniversary. That doesn’t seem possible! Here’s another one that doesn’t seem possible: My niece, Adana, and her husband, Jonathan, will celebrate their 32nd wedding anniversary. Even though February and Valentine’s Day have come and gone, love is still on my mind. I think of my growing family as I see their strong relationships grow stronger with every year. I see our children become young adults and good people. Soon, they have families of their own, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren bless our lives. Yes, March makes me reflect. This is also the month of March Madness. The name is thanks to the Illinois High School Association, who sponsored a tournament in 1939 that became so popular that it sold out the stadium regularly. This year, the March Madness is more like March Sadness. We said good-bye to Kobe Bryant; his daughter, Gianna; and others whose names aren’t in the headlines but are just as important. Mr. Bryant was a good man, father, basketball star, mentor…the list goes on. I mention this sad event because I respect Mr. Bryant. He touched many lives and made an impact on young people who will make this world a better place. When tragedy strikes, many of us want to grab our loved ones and hold on tight. My children are not famous. They are not sports icons or movie stars, but to me they are rock stars! Although they are all miles away, I hug them tight every morning in my heart. So, as winter hopefully makes way for spring, take time every day to see the beauty all around you. Appreciate the people you encounter. Thank those who visit the hospitals with their therapy dogs, who serve you at a restaurant, who fold your new purchases, who bag your groceries, who fix your car. Make them feel important because they are. Perhaps, because of your brief encounter, they will pass that kindness along, making the world a better place. March Madness celebrates the greats, but there are many “greats” who go uncelebrated. Seek them out and have a joyous day.

Bulls and Bears Who Really Cares?

By George Morgan

Just like any other industry, Wall Street has its own jargon. Brokers call betting against the market “short selling.” Believing that the market will go up means that you are “selling long.” When they say they are “elephant hunting,” they’re looking for a big company to purchase. Wall Street refers to market conditions as either “bullish” or “bearish,” and this is the part of their lingo that has most spilled over to the world outside the financial industry. It is not uncommon to hear references to bulls and bears on the nightly news. In fact, these terms have become so common that nobody stops to explain them anymore; they just assume that everybody already knows. Though many people have heard these terms, the truth is that not everyone knows what they mean. The simplest explanation is that a bull market is one in which stocks are rising, and a bear market is one in which stocks are falling. That said, let’s look a little closer at what these terms really mean. A bull market is not exactly describing the market itself. Rather, it is reporting on the psychology of investors in general. During a bull market, investors are optimistic and more interested in buying than they are in selling. When buying interest exceeds selling interest, the market goes up. Bull markets are most common when the economy is growing, unemployment is low, and inflation is low. A bull market can last weeks, months, or years; the average length of a bull market is approximately 97 months. When we say that we’re in a bear market, we expect that stocks are headed down. This means that sellers outnumber buyers. Historically, bear markets have been shorter in duration than bull markets, with an average length of 18 months. If stocks go down for just a few days or weeks, the movement is usually called a “pullback” or a “correction.” Once stocks drop 20 percent from their peak, commentators will begin to speculate that we are in a bear market and that prices may drop a lot farther before the market begins to climb back up again. The terms “bear” and “bull” are believed to have come from the way that each animal attacks its opponents. A bull thrusts its horns up, while a bear swipes down with its paws. The terminology is so ingrained in stock market culture that there is actually a statue of a charging bull situated near the New York Stock Exchange. The statue arrived in 1989, when it was (illegally) dropped off right outside the exchange building. The motivation behind it came from the 1987 Black Monday stock market crash. The intention was to inspire people who came into contact with it to carry on fighting through the hard times and look forward to a brighter future. In today’s market, the bull and bear terminology has less relevance than it did 40 years ago. Back

then, investor optimism or pessimism had a greater impact on the markets than it does today. In those days, the markets’ buying and selling operations were made by humans with paper and pencil who stood together on the floor of an exchange. In today’s markets, an average of 80 percent of the trades are made between two computers, with no human involvement whatsoever. At last check, computers have no emotions and only minimal analytical powers. Markets continue to go up and down, but the computer-driven markets are more arbitrary and less predictable than those controlled by humans. The conventional wisdom is that investors enjoy bull markets and fear bear markets. This is probably not too far from the truth. If you have a 401(k), however, you have reason to enjoy both of them and dread neither. When the market is going up, you can enjoy the ride. When the market is going down, you are uniquely positioned to profit. Because 401(k) accounts are long-term investments, you can’t take money out just because the market is doing something unsettling. Thus, a temporary decline is irrelevant. Over the course of last 200 years, the long-term market trend has always been up. In addition, 401(k) owners and, in many cases, their employers add money to these accounts on a regular basis. When the market declines and they buy more mutual fund shares with the new money, the average cost of their portfolio declines. When the market returns to bull conditions (and it always has), the accounts will become profitable much sooner than they would have if investors had sold and hoped to return to the market when things got better. The bottom line is that people with 401(k) accounts (and there are a lot of us!) have no reason to fear either bulls or bears…at least, not when it comes to market forces. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. Warmer Weather is on the Way! Let Spring Inspire Your Fashion By Holly Bell

Winter woes will shortly be behind us as we look forward to spring break! Nothing could be more welcome during cold weather than a little warm sunshine, green trees, and blooming flowers. Designers have wisely taken the hint in their vacation apparel. This season’s shows also celebrated inclusion and diversity. Spring runways were filled with models of every age, size, and ethnicity. Hooray! It’s about time designers designed for real people! A fun and retro focus in this spring’s clothing and accessories will be detailing such as crochet, patchworks, and raffia. Shine is still in season (way past the holidays!), with plenty of sequins and shimmery fabrics making their way into sundresses, summer tops, and swimwear. We can also expect to welcome longer shorts. Last year, short-shorts were everywhere, but this year’s fashionistas will be sporting a longer, more Bermuda-length short. These will feature everything from fun-patterned, loose styles for the beach to tailored suit looks for the office. Still big news this season will be the focus on jumpsuits. Brought back a couple of seasons ago, this force is still with us for summer. The romper’s big sister is ultra-comfy and creates an easy one-step trendy look that doesn’t even require shaving your legs! You can dress it down with flip-flops to throw over a bathing suit or dress it up with this season’s hot belt trend: the chain belt. Add some wedge sandals and dangly earrings, and you are ready for a night out. It just isn’t spring without some bold, beautiful florals. Big blooms on a dark background are very flattering, whether they’re worn on a sundress or a bathing suit. Bathing suits will reflect all the trends this year. You will see leopard prints and polka dots, along with those dark-background florals. A less-pleasant fashion chore for many women is trying on swimwear in front of those unforgiving dressing room mirrors. It’s a trial, ladies, but it has to be done! Let’s take a look at a few hints to help you find the right suit for your body. Small-chested women look good in a deep v-cut suit. Keep it chic and simple, and keep the focus on the neckline for perfect flattery. A low-cut back would also be a good choice for those who are smaller up top. To bring attention to a small waist, consider a one-piece suit with waist definition such as ruching or cutouts. A lower neckline is perfect for you, also. Pear-shaped bodies (when the hips are the widest part) look best with a higher-cut leg style. This cut makes the legs seem longer and narrows the hips. Choose a style that has some upper body focus, such as a one-shoulder look or pattern on the top, to deflect attention from the hip area. The most common swimsuit problem for a lot of women is tummy bulge. How can we camouflage it and still be comfortable? First, realize that you are going to have to buy a good quality swimsuit with soft stretch and control. This means that it will be a little more expensive, but it’s worth it. I find that the most flattering shape is the mock crossover panel front. This creates a v-shaped neckline and a diagonal line over the tummy, which is very slimming and also looks glamorous.

Many people tend to shy away from prints when it comes to swimwear, as they think it adds pounds. In fact, just the opposite is true. An eye-catching print will do just that—catch the eye and draw it away from whatever you believe to be your problem areas. Animal prints are great for camouflage and are very trendy this year. A one-shoulder look is very hot also, especially for women who prefer a one-piece suit but want a shot of style to add interest to the top half of the body. Crisscross or lace-up neckline looks are a big trend for bathing suits, along with crisscross and lace-up tank tops. The great thing about a crisscross tank top is that you can wear the same top so many ways. It looks great under anything that is a little too low in the front, and it adds interest in the back when the crisscross is worn on the back. You can layer it or wear it by itself, topped with a jacket. My advice is to purchase one in every color! Now that we are in a spring state of mind, let’s go visit the stores and get inspired for the first warm getaway of the season! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

At family-owned Home Heating Service, clients can expect HVAC excellence the first time, and every time. Kyle and Pamela Gateley are the company’s general manager and president, respectively. Their son, Jordan, oversees the company’s operations; their daughter, Chelsea, handles customer service. For the Gateley family, work is also fun. An old-time popcorn popper taking up residence in the conference room gives you an idea of the kind of office environment they enjoy. “We love our customers,” Jordan says, laughing, “and we love our popcorn. No question about it!” Kyle started his career as a chimney sweep in Rochester, New York. After relocating to Colorado Springs, he cut his HVAC chops working for a variety of companies. In time, Kyle met Pam, who was working as a paralegal. They married, bought Home Heating Service in 1990, and went to work building their business. “I confess, I dragged her into this mess,” Kyle recalls, as Pam laughs. They were delighted when their son, Jordan, developed an interest in the family business. He started out with tasks like sweeping floors and assisting maintenance workers, gaining a respect for the HVAC business. After two years of college studies, Jordan returned to assist his parents. He has now been with the company for 10 years. The Gateleys enjoy all aspects of providing the best service for their clients. Their professionalism and care are evident the moment they walk into their clients’ homes. “We look at it from a comfort position,” Jordan says. “We explain that we’re there to give them a better home, and they understand that.” Kyle agrees. “We have a good reputation and rapport with our clients. We’re customer service–oriented, and I think that shows in the service we provide. We are a big company that does an outstanding job.” Pam adds, “We do excellent work and are there for our clients when they need us.” “I was so fortunate to have found Home Heating Service,” shares one of their customers. “They have been patient and friendly every time! They are always available to answer questions. The best part about Home Heating Service is that they were always focused on giving good service and finding solutions. I would recommend them to anyone.” Kyle believes that listening to clients and gaining their

12

trust is paramount for success. “We try to obtain trust through excellence, and I push my team and myself to retain that trust,” Kyle emphasizes. Jordan agrees. “We try and look at it as a way to improve their home,” he says. “We want to make our clients as comfortable as possible.” The Gateleys always welcome client feedback, and they particularly enjoy hearing from those who are pleased with employees who arrive on time for the job, Pam says. “I just received a card in which the client praised our employee for having spent time with them, explaining what they were going to do and doing the job right,” she notes. A large Wall of Fame display located in the conference room is further testimony to their clients’ satisfaction. “People send us cards and reviews, which we post for everyone to see,” Jordan explains, pointing out the display. Being able to provide a comfortable work environment for his crew is the most rewarding aspect of the business, Kyle says. “It was difficult working for some HVAC companies because I didn’t like the work environment,” he recalls. “My position here allows me to do better by my own employees.” Pam also enjoys treating their employees right. “Nothing tops the feeling of handing out employee pay stubs each Friday,” she says. Jordan particularly enjoys helping their HVAC technicians. “I have spent a lot of time in the field, dealing with technicians,” he explains. “The most rewarding thing for me is solving their issues, because they solve our clients’ issues.” Kyle advises potential business owners to treat their clients and employees the way they would want to be treated. The people are the most important part of any business, he says. “The HVAC business is a great industry, with great people, and I am glad to be part of it,” Kyle concludes. If you need any HVAC services in your home, reach out to Home Heating Service, Inc. Their office is located at 1565 Tuskegee Place. You can reach them by phone at 719-591-9777 or online at homeheatingservice.com. WE

A Woman’s Work

The Beauty of Ordinary Everyday Memories By Sharon Knierim

Have you ever noticed that when something really important is happening to you or in your life, that it feels like a silent and unseen photographer is snapping photos and placing them in your memory? You know that you will remember these moments for the rest of your life. These precious seconds become part of who you are. You know even when the event is happening that this will be with you forever and there won’t be any need to refresh your memory with pictures. It’s the ordinary days, though, that fill in lots of memory chips. Life must really be about those ordinary days. Life might be a little too hectic if we met our new husband every day, we won the lottery every Saturday night, vacations lasted for no less than six months, and we had to look at newborns all the time. The poetry of life is its normalcy. There’s a rhythm to the ordinary. I like those quiet days. No guests are standing at my front door peering through the glass. No pot roasts are over-done. We don’t have to be anywhere if we don’t want to be. This is living. These are memories. The best days are ordinary Sundays. If we take the kids to church, they like to complain about wearing clothes that actually fit. They look extremely uncomfortable in clothing that is not seven or eight sizes too big and doesn’t have any messages or advertisements on the front. Their shoes actually have a back on them, and shoestrings! Oh, my gosh—shoestrings, tied in neat little bows. I love that. During the children’s sermon, our son explains to the entire parish how his daddy helps him fly his “Bug Off” kite and what words his daddy uses when the kite nosedives into a mud puddle. We offer up special prayers that the little guy will forget where we are sitting and maybe join some other family who is desperately praying for another child. If you’re a parent, you know this is just another ordinary day… but ordinary is good. People who are comfortable with each other or who have perhaps lived together for a long time embrace the ordinary. They welcome it. After church, we treat the entire family to lunch in an ethnic restaurant. Naturally, the children pass up the Wiener schnitzel, sauerkraut, and dumplings to order hot dogs and French fries. They ask for the ketchup. I know they are going to do this. It’s so ordinary. When we arrive at home again, everyone shucks their dressy clothes before I can take a photo. That’s okay because I can’t find my phone to take a photo anyway. None of the children can remember how to put their clothing on hangers or where their closets are. Their fancy shoes are returned to their “wrongful” spot just inside the front door, and there’s a path of sweaty socks from the living room to the refrigerator. Just as

14

always, they attack the refrigerator. There was nothing edible there before church and nobody has been grocery shopping this morning but still...there’s the possibility that the food fairy might have dropped in while we were gone for a couple of hours and filled our empty refrigerator. It’s a long s hot, but you never know. Sound ordinary? You bet it is, and that’s what most of us like. Who among us hasn’t stood outdoors wrapped in blankets to watch the twilight with our loved ones? Don’t we all have “popcorn night” when what we really want is a steak in a fancy restaurant? We might not climb the Eiffel Tower every day, but most of us take time to run up the hill and fly a kite or attack the playground equipment like there’s no tomorrow. Maybe the ordinary happens in the middle of our lives when there’s nothing monumental happening. Age doesn’t have anything to do with it. All generations have the ordinary, and grandparents and parents and even the kiddos participate together in building memories— those precious moments of just plain old everyday living that mean so much and stay with us forever. It’s those beautiful moments and days—those ordinary days that are somehow set apart and made special by their quality of appreciation. We know when we crawl into bed at night that we’ve had a wonderfully ordinary day. The day was experienced in the heart just as it happened. It was lived beautifully and simply and absolutely fully. Agendas, deadlines, and stress have no place in the ordinary. No photo or video can record the beauty of ordinary. These normal days are recorded in the book of memories we all carry in our hearts and minds—days and moments we never forget. Enjoy your ordinary days! WE

Equestrian Sports for All Riders Love Your Horse, Build Your Skills By Brie Christensen

For more than 100 years, the equestrian sport has provided opportunities for athletes around the globe to compete and enjoy the act of riding. With various disciplines to choose from, such as combined driving, dressage, eventing, vaulting, show jumping, reining, English riding, and Western riding, there’s an option out there for every horse and rider. Since there are so many equestrian disciplines, it’s important to choose the one that best complements both the horse and the rider. There’s no need to rush this decision! It’s fun to try more than one before you find the best fit. Some things to consider when choosing a discipline include the rider’s personal preference, the type of horse, and the skill levels of both the horse and the rider. Dressage, a technique for showcasing all levels of training in a competitive format, is open to all breeds of horses and any level of rider. Currently, there are nine progressive levels of competition for this event. Dressage is one of the disciplines that is included in the Olympic Games. You may also recognize show jumping from the Olympics. Known as one of the most popular sports worldwide, show jumping involves a series of obstacles to jump over. Horses and ponies of all sizes and breeds compete in various levels of challenge. Combined driving is specifically designed to test the driver’s ability as well as the obedience, speed, and athleticism of the horse or horses. This event includes three phases with a carriage in tow: driven dressage, marathon, and a cones course. The carriage may be towed by one, two, or three horses. With this sport, there are no breed specifications, and all skill levels are welcome to compete. Another combination discipline is called eventing; it consists of dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. This triathlon of sorts often takes place over three days. Vaulting, the oldest equestrian sport in history, is sometimes referred to as “gymnastics on horseback” because…well, because it’s essentially gymnastics on horseback. Competitors are judged on their ability to smoothly execute compulsory movements during their routines. Reining tests the skills and athletic abilities that would be expected of a working ranch horse. This is done through specific movements like slow circles; large, fast circles; and fast, 360-degree spins. American stock breeds are often used for these competitions. In Western reining and other displays of Western horsemanship, riders demonstrate control of the horse and adaptability. English riding focuses more on excellent obedience and smooth movements. Categories include hunter seat, saddle seat, and driving. Just as there are numerous sports to choose from, there are also many competitions available for riders, including the Olympic and Paralympic Games. In these

international events, elite athletes compete on behalf of their respective nations. The three foundation sports of the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI)— dressage, eventing, and jumping—are quite unique among Olympic competitions because they combine the athleticism and training of a human athlete and an animal. Since 1990, the FEI World Equestrian Games have been held every four years (halfway between each Olympic cycle), providing another chance for riders to compete. These competitions have gradually expanded to include the disciplines of jumping, dressage, eventing, driving, endurance, vaulting, reining, and para-dressage. Historically, these events have been held at European venues, and always at a new location. In 2010, however, the Games were held in Kentucky—outside of Europe for the first time. Another highly notable equestrian competition is the FEI World Cup, an indoor series that takes place throughout the world with qualifying leagues, leading to a final in each discipline. This event began with show jumping in 1978. It has since evolved to include the disciplines of dressage, driving, and vaulting. Every four years, in the year before the summer Olympic Games, thousands of athletes come from nations in the Americas to participate in a variety of competitive sports during the Pan American Games. Equestrian participants compete in the disciplines of dressage, eventing, and show jumping during this competition. Younger riders (ages 12–21 years) can compete in the Adequan/FEI North American Youth Championships. Young equestrians compete for team and individual medals in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines: show jumping, dressage, and eventing. Throughout the year, the US Equestrian Federation works with organizing committees to coordinate and stage major equestrian events across the United States. As the sport continues to evolve, it makes room for more competitions and disciplines for riders of all ages and all skill levels. While the first trot might seem daunting to a novice rider, that’s how mastery of the equestrian sport begins! With dedication, training, and a passion for riding, anyone can enjoy this sport. Custom Home Building Creating Your Dream Home By Angella A. Arndt

I’m sure there are many things you love about your current home, but wouldn’t it be amazing to have a home designed to meet the specific needs of your family and your lifestyle? If you’re considering a brand-new home, custom home building may be worth a look. Custom-built homes are unique and represent your personal style. You’ll have flexibility with the design, architecture, and location. You’ll get to choose amenities that suit your lifestyle—things like entertaining spaces, fitness rooms, theater rooms, sunrooms, and outdoor living. Multigenerational living is becoming more common, and you can design a home to comfortably accommodate extended family living. Create a home for your own future with universal design features such as wider doors, lower countertops, and fewer stairs. Choose technological systems to remotely control features such as home security, home audio systems, lighting, and heating and cooling. A custom-built home gives you the flexibility to decide what’s most important to you in a home. Once you’ve decided to build a custom home, you’ll need to establish a budget. Your budget will determine the size of the home you can build, possible locations, and what design elements you can incorporate. When selecting your location, factor in property taxes and any local fees. A custom-built home may include fees for architects, engineers, home builders and contractors, landscapers, and interior designers. Home construction costs are the most significant expenditure, and a budget is crucial to avoid cost overruns. Include the cost of new furnishings in your budget. Lastly, add a contingency budget for unexpected expenses during the construction process. There are many options available to finance a custom home. Essential items to consider when selecting a mortgage include the down payment, mortgage length, interest rate, insurance requirements, and other terms. Mortgage loans to consider include conventional loans, FHA loans, and VA loans. Many conventional loans require larger down payments; some loans may accept less but will require mortgage insurance. FHA loans are backed by the federal government and require a lower minimum down payment and credit score. This type of loan has loan limits and restrictions, as well as mortgage insurance premiums. Veterans may apply for a VA loan, which does not require a down payment. (For more information on mortgages, turn to page 60.) New construction loans are short-term loans used during the construction process, which are then converted to a long-term loan of 15 to 30 years. If you haven’t sold your current home, you may want a bridge loan. This type of loan uses the equity in your current home to obtain a short-term loan; proceeds from the sale of your house are used to pay off the bridge loan. Some builders may offer financing packages through relationships with mortgage companies. What’s true in all of real estate is true of custom

16

homes, too: location, location, location! Aside from the cost of the land, your site will determine what you’re able to do with your house. Learn about the housing development, zoning restrictions, utility availability, maintenance, and school district associated with any lots you like. If you’re building in a subdivision, find out if your home’s design and landscaping need to be approved and whether there are covenants, restrictions, or fees to consider. Zoning may affect items such as your home’s size, height, and setback from the street. Find out how utilities such as power, water, waste, gas, phone, and internet services are provided. You’ll want to know who handles maintenance items such as snow removal and trash removal. Get information on the neighborhood’s demographics— are there younger families with children, or is it an older, quieter neighborhood? If you have children, learn about the school district. Is the location convenient for you to get to work? Lastly, think about what your chosen location might look like in five or 10 years. If your property is located near undeveloped land or adjacent to a main street, the possibility of commercial development and street-widening should be factored into your decision. Doing your research will help you avoid unexpected issues down the road. Don’t forget that there are professionals who can help you navigate this process. You’re not in this alone! Architects are trained to help you through the custom home building process. They see the overall picture and will help you design a home that meets your needs and budget. You and your architect will work together to create a personalized floor plan. Making changes to your floor plan during the design phase is more cost-efficient than changing your mind during construction. Once you decide on your final floor plan, your architect will provide you with detailed drawings and specifications to obtain bids from contractors. Your architect can also help you during the construction process by making site visits, reviewing and approving payments to the contractor, and keeping you informed.

While designing your home, you’ll also need to make decisions about materials and finishes, such as flooring, wall coverings, countertops, lighting, and window treatments. Interior designers have expertise in both design and aesthetics and can visualize the completed project. They understand how lighting, textures, furniture, and flow impact the mood of a space. These professionals can also guide you in selecting reliable vendors for many of the components in your home. An interior designer can be a valuable partner in creating a space that represents your style. How do you choose the builder for your custom home? Ask your architect or interior designer for contractors to interview. Building a home is one of the most significant investments you will make, and there are several questions you should ask when interviewing builders. For example, how many years has the builder been in business, and how many homes has the company built during that time? Can you tour one of them (or a model home)? Will they provide references from previous clients? Are they licensed? Do they have insurance? What is their new home warranty? You’ll also want to ask questions about the services they offer. Do you have to use plans they have, or will they accept a custom set of plans? What standard features do they offer? What about upgrade options? Do they provide energy-saving features? Questions about the logistics of construction are important, too. How is the change process handled during construction? What access will you have to the home during the construction process, and how are inspections handled? Who is your contact person? How is the final price of the home determined, and when will you receive your bid? Questions such as these will help you select the right builder for your home. Ask your builder for specifics, but you can expect it to take up

to 24 months to build your custom home. This timeframe includes pre-construction items such as hiring your team (architect, interior designer, builder), selecting a site, designing the home, obtaining a loan, and getting the appropriate permits. The pre-construction process can take nine to 12 months. The construction process can take up to 12 months and depends on variables such as the size and complexity of the project, site preparation, availability of supplies, design changes, and weather delays. Hiring a good team and bringing a willingness to collaborate to the table will help set expectations and minimize the timeframe needed to build your home. Need some design ideas to get you started? Architectural Digest has identified some of the top design trends for 2020. Warm neutrals in off-whites, tinted grays, earthy ochers, and beiges that are reminiscent of connecting with nature are making a comeback. “Soothing minimalism,” inspired by Japanese aesthetics such as simple forms with natural materials, will be popular. Sustainable materials in furniture and fabrics are in demand. The sleek designs and natural tones of European-inspired furniture continue to trend. Home accents with botanical prints, wood grain, and stone veining replications represent a desire to get back to nature. For those who prefer brights over neutrals, modernism represented by bold colors, clean-cut lines, and geometric shapes will have a presence. If you’re in the market for a new home, consider the advantages of custom building. You can get everything you want, just how you want it. You can design and build a home to meet your needs well into the future. Your home will be unique and reflect your personality. Doesn’t that sound fabulous? The Ultimate Staycation Create an Outdoor Retreat

By Robyn V. Powell

Finding the time to pull together a summer vacation can be a challenge. It’s no surprise that a growing number of homeowners are opting out of a traditional vacation and are instead choosing a staycation. The growing desire to spend more quality time at home, coupled with advances in home technology, have led to the rapid growth of the outdoor living industries. There are more options than ever for transforming your backyard into an outdoor oasis. Adding a pool, spa, or kitchen enhances your outdoor living space and promotes a healthy lifestyle built around relaxing with family and entertaining friends. A well-designed outdoor space can boost the value of your home, as well. Get ready to take the plunge and transform your backyard into the staycation location of your dreams! Many areas require a certain distance between a home and a pool, so it’s vital to work with a professional pool installer in your area who knows the local building codes and regulations. Once you know how much space you have, you can design a pool with features that fit your lifestyle. The growing demand for pools means more styles and features than ever before. Pools can be built in all shapes and sizes—lap pools, diving pools, even cocktail pools! One of the leading pool trends is darker interior finishes. Deeper tones are naturally evocative of a lagoon and pair well with rock features and waterfalls. Beautiful decorative tiling around the waterline

is another popular trend. Luxury finishes open up endless possibilities to transform pool decks, patio areas, and landscape features. Built-in bars have become the ultimate pool accessory. You don’t have to fly to Mexico or Hawaii to enjoy a refreshing poolside drink. Whether you desire a swim-up bar with submerged seating or a bar directly adjacent to the pool, built-in bars can be customized to your exact preferences. For an inviting ambience, the combination of fire and water creates an element of drama that is hard to beat. Fire bowls located near water features make for stunning focal points. LED lighting is another great way to enhance outdoor living. Advances in technology allow color and brightness to change or dim on demand, making it easy to transform your area into a different mood for different occasions. Technology is also making it easier to maintain pools. Every- ›››

thing from temperature control to lighting is seamlessly controlled with a smartphone app. Automated systems work to better control the filtering and cleaning of your pool, reducing energy costs while protecting the environment. When it comes to heating your pool, water heat pumps are efficient and environmentally friendly, with lower operating costs than gas heaters. Gas heaters, on the other hand, have the advantage of heating water more quickly. If you use your pool only on weekends versus every day, gas heating operating costs can be less expensive in the long run. When creating your backyard oasis, consider a hot tub or spa. Spas provide a relaxing vibe while helping to reduce stress and relieve joint pain. When temperatures dip, spas extend the time you can enjoy your outdoor space. If massage is important to you, look for spas with adjustable back and leg jets. Portable spas are typically made of molded fiberglass and can be positioned almost anywhere on a concrete surface or a reinforced wooden deck. Concrete spas are often built into in-ground pools, creating a sleekly integrated and stylish aesthetic. Entertainment systems can be integrated, setting the scene for complete relaxation. For many homeowners, a pool represents the cornerstone to outdoor fun and healthy outdoor living, but the pool is only one part of the equation. Your outdoor space is not complete without amenities like seating and dining areas. Outdoor kitchens expand your living space and are ideal for entertaining, creating an area where guests can hang out with the cook. There’s a trend toward more tailored outdoor kitchens, with sophisticated features like smokers, wine fridges, ice makers, pizza ovens, and grills equipped with rotisseries. Building an outdoor kitchen requires special knowledge and skills. Landscape architects, kitchen designers, and contractors can all build outdoor kitchens. It’s important to choose a company that has completed many projects. Request references and visit past projects so you can judge the workmanship and ask former clients how the work has held up. As with any home project, be sure to get everything in writing. Cooking, entertaining, and enjoying each other’s company in the comfort of your own backyard provides a fun, healthy, and stress-free getaway. Turn your backyard into a summer paradise, and you can sit back and enjoy the staycation of your dreams. Out and About

Studio 27 Aesthetic Care Integrity, Trust, Experience By Patty Schlegel

Michael Renee Bradburry, RN, is the owner of Studio 27 Aesthetic Care, and she believes that everyone deserves to look better and feel better. She began practicing aesthetic medicine 20 years ago, under the supervision of three doctors. More than 10 years ago, she opened Studio 27 in Old Colorado City, on the corner of 27th Street. She now has a second location in Woodland Park. “Studio 27 is a medically supervised spa with a boutique feel,” says Michael. After many years of offering a variety of aesthetic services, she decided to narrow her focus. “I do what I am good at and enjoy doing,” she explains. Her practice is now strictly medical. She offers Botox, fillers, medical-grade chemical peels, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, microneedling, sclerotherapy, HCG diets, and LipoLean. Michael notes that she was one of the first nurse advanced injectors in town and is proud and honored to have been trained by skilled and experienced doctors. Longtime client G. A. Powers says that anyone can do fillers, but not everyone can achieve the natural results that he gets at Studio 27. People tell him that he looks good, he says—and no one has ever asked him if he has had work done. “Michael’s like an artist,” Mr. Powers says. “She is cognizant of bone structure, contours beautifully, and knows where to inject to avoid bruising.” It’s knowing where to inject that makes for the most natural look, Michael stresses. “More is never better,” she advises. “I just want to complement their look, not change who they are.” Michael is proud of her good reputation, of her experience and integrity, and of the trust her clients have in her. Having worked as a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit, Michael is accustomed to working in conditions that leave no room for error. That’s the level of dedication that she now brings to her clients at Studio 27. Michael’s work at her studio also involves educating her clients. With so many new businesses advertising aesthetic procedures, Michael teaches her clients that now, more than ever, they need to know who is behind the needle. It’s important to learn both the practitioner’s qualifications and the contents of the products that are being used. “It’s your face,” she points out. “It’s very important to know what is being injected.” She uses only the safest products on the market, she says, and she mixes the products in front of her clients. She takes the time to educate them on how much is being injected, where it is being injected, and why. Mr. Powers says that Michael never pushes a product and helps you look natural within your budget. “There’s a new confidence she instills in you,” he says. “You feel you are looking the best you can. It’s worth every penny.”

Another longtime client, “Laurie,” says that she had been to other places for procedures but, once she found Michael, she has Michael Renee never gone anywhere else. She encourages anyone who Bradburry, RN wants to look and feel younger to “go for it.” She is happy with the natural results she was able to achieve (with no bruising!), the fact that she never has to wait in the office, and the caring and personal approach Michael takes with her clients. “It’s my happy place, even though it’s a place with needles,” she laughs. Because of the pleasant experiences she has had at Studio 27, Laurie says she has referred many of her friends to Michael. She would refer her own mother, she quips, but she has never told her mom that she has had procedures done…as far as she can tell, her mother has never even noticed. She offers Botox, fillers, No matter how old you are, you’re aging medical-grade chemical every day. It is never too early to begin peels, platelet-rich anti-aging prevention, plasma (PRP) therapy, Michael says, and it’s never too late to slow microneedling, sclerotherapy, or even reverse some of the visible effects of HCG diets, and LipoLean. aging. She says she has seen an expansion in her clientele, in both age and gender. More men and women of a wider age group are wanting to look and feel better these days. Michael is the sole advanced injector. This helps keep her overhead low, so she can pass on the savings to her clients. She says she finds her work rewarding and loves that she has the flexibility to spend time with her clients, to get to know them. “It’s about doing the right thing, making people feel better about themselves,” she concludes. Good Looks

From Flab to Fab Eliminating Body Fat

By Loretta McCollum

Do you feel that your shape is looking a little shabby? Do you have portly pooches or bulges that just won’t budge? Perhaps you feel as if your weight is out of control and it’s affecting your health? No matter what your situation, there’s never been a better time to consider body fat reduction. There are more options available now than ever before! From minimally invasive injections to general surgery, there’s a weight loss tool for everyone. “Tool” is the key word here. All of the procedures discussed in this article are just that—tools to help you achieve a healthier, shapelier you. It’s important to remember that lifestyle changes, including good nutrition and adequate exercise, will go a long way to ensure long-term results. Let’s begin with liposuction, one of the best-known choices for area-specific body contouring and definition. This is an optimal selection if you want to trim just a few inches. It’s commonly used on the abdomen, back, legs, and buttocks. Local anesthetic is administered before a surgeon inserts a hollow tube into the target area, suctioning out excess fat cells. Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance (VASER) liposuction is a relatively new development that utilizes ultrasonic frequency waves to break down fat cells before they’re removed. A metal rod emitting ultrasonic energy is inserted under the skin, rup-

turing the fat cells for easier removal. Another option is laser-assisted liposuction. This involves applying high-intensity laser light via a laser fiber that is inserted into the skin through a small incision. Liposuction involves minimal damage to surrounding tissue, but you should still expect a recovery period. No matter which liposuction procedure is performed, patients can anticipate bruising and swelling for several days after the procedure and should restrict their activity as needed. The results of liposuction are permanent— that is, the removed fat cells are gone forever. However, there’s no guarantee that you won’t gain weight again after your procedure. For long-term success after liposuction, you’ll need to maintain a healthy lifestyle of good nutrition and physical activity. A vagal blockade (VBLOC) is one of the latest innovations in body fat reduction. The vagus nerve helps regulate stomach function. A VBLOC procedure involves the surgeon implanting a

pacemaker-like device along the vagus. This device sends electronic impulses to signal the brain that the stomach is full. It is controlled by an adjustable remote located outside the body. The surgery is minimally invasive and has produced favorable results with a low risk of complications. Restrictive weight loss surgeries are more aggressive options for those with a significant amount of weight to lose. These surgeries change how you take in food and drastically reduce the amount of food that you are physically able to consume. Gastric banding is one of these procedures. The surgeon uses an inflatable band to divide the stomach into two connected sections—upper and lower. The process of the upper section emptying into the lower section is slowed down, resulting in a feeling of being full. Patients typically ingest a maximum of one cup of food at a time. The size of the band can be adjusted as needed, and the band can be removed entirely, reversing the procedure. In a sleeve gastrectomy, 75 percent of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow sleeve for food to pass through. Unlike gastric banding, this procedure is irreversible, and it is designed for patients who are significantly obese. As with gastric banding, patients who undergo sleeve gastrectomy have a reduced stomach area, which means they feel full after eating a much smaller amount of food. A full gastric bypass is one of the most invasive and complicated weight loss surgeries. Like gastric banding, a gastric bypass divides the stomach into upper and lower sections. However, with gastric bypass, the two sections are sealed off from one another. This creates a shortcut for food, bypassing part of the stomach and the small intestine. When food avoids passing through the small intestine, the body absorbs fewer calories. In the beginning, patients may consume as little as one or two ounces of food at a time, resulting in rapid weight loss. Nutrient absorption can also be reduced, meaning that patients need to consult with their physician about supplements that may be required to ensure a healthy diet. Common post-surgery complications include stomach pain and nausea. Close monitoring, and even lifestyle therapy, can help ensure continued success after gastric bypass surgery. No matter which option you choose, make sure to seek out board-certified physicians who are experienced in body-shaping and weight-loss procedures. Healthy Living

Tracey’s Boutique Proudly Serving Survivors By Brenda Gracely

If breast cancer has touched your life, you know that the road to recovery holds many challenges. A breast cancer diagnosis changes a woman’s life in a heartbeat. Taking care of the body, mind, and spirit during the trials of treatment and recovery is essential to maintaining a survivor’s confidence and femininity. Tracey Fogle is proud to provide products and services to local women who are living through these trying times. After seeing her mother and close friends experience breast cancer and the challenging recovery, Tracey realized there was a need in the area for more services and mastectomy products for people facing breast cancer. She made it her goal to help these women feel confident and beautiful again. Tracey’s Boutique is an expansion of Tracey’s longstanding Merle Norman franchise, located in the Chapel Hills Mall in Colorado Springs. In 2016, Tracey became a certified mastectomy fitter to follow through with her goal. She completed over 500 hours of specialized training to achieve this designation and is one of only a few mastectomy fitters in the area. Tracey is certified through American Board of Certification. Tracey’s mission statement says it all: “I am dedicated to enhancing the lives of breast cancer survivors by making them feel beautiful through compassion, assisting and recapturing their femininity, and giving them the ability to feel whole again.” Helping women regain selfconfidence is at the core of Tracey’s work. “My hope is that my personal and comforting approach will help them get back their feelings of femininity,” Tracey continues. “If I can help just a little bit in that whole process, then I feel successful. I want to help all the women who seek my assistance put away their anxiety and leave my shop feeling feminine and beautiful.” Tracey becomes something of a guide, interviewing her clients, learning about their lifestyles, and understanding their goals for getting back to their normal activities. Tiffany, a recent client, had only the best to tell. “I had such an amazing experience with Tracey and the staff at Tracey’s Boutique,” Tiffany shares. “I was treated with care and patience through the entire appointment. Tracey really knows how to make someone feel comfortable for a fitting. It was a very hard experience to go through, and I really appreciated Tracey’s compassion and warmth. Thank you, Tracey!” A prosthesis and bra that fit properly are important not only for a breast cancer survivor’s physical needs but for her emotional well-being, too. Wearing a properly fit bra and prosthesis will restore balance and symmetry to the body and will increase self-confidence. Tracey assesses each woman’s desired post-mastectomy goals and

28

provides support to achieve them. Getting a prosthesis and bra fitting at Tracey’s Boutique is not like going into a dressing room at a department store. The private fitting environment at Tracey’s Boutique allows women to relax and feel comfortable in a spacious, living room– style fitting room. These private, personal fittings help clients get the very best possible fit from Tracey’s extensive stock of ready-made prostheses and bras. Tracey fits products by Amoena and American Breast Care product lines. For those wishing to have a custom-made prosthesis, a personal scan using Radiant Impressions creates an individualized fit. This helps provide the very highest level of symmetry and balance. As a special treat, each consultation and fitting is followed by a customized makeup session in the Merle Norman franchise side of the shop. Though breast prostheses and bras can be vital parts of a woman’s wardrobe during breast cancer recovery, Tracey understands that they’re not all a woman needs. At the store, she also stocks pocketed apparel and pretty lingerie, plus leisurewear and activewear. Now that spring is around the corner, clients can also begin to look forward to pocketed swimwear for swim forms. Many cancer patients have also undergone chemotherapy, which can result in extensive hair loss. The compassionate staff at Tracey’s Boutique will help each client find the perfect wig, including synthetic as well as human hair wigs. For clients who prefer cloth head coverings to wigs, they offer a wide range of fabrics, from ultra-soft bamboo cotton to Italian silk. Breast cancer treatment and recovery are filled with challenges, even with the best of outcomes. If you or someone you love is wading through these challenges right now, please know that Tracey is ready to help you reclaim your self-confidence. Tracey’s Boutique is located inside Chapel Hills Mall (at 1710 Briargate Boulevard) in Colorado Springs, inside the Merle Norman Cosmetics store on the upper level. Shifting Karma Don’t Absorb Others’ Anger Have you ever had the experience of meeting up with someone who is just…shall we say…angry? It might be someone you meet in a business situation. It might be your server at lunch. It might be your child’s elementary school teacher. A person like this may not even say anything directly to you…but you still find yourself recoiling. The energy that these people emanate can feel physically painful. “Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.” —Mark Twain Years ago, I would find myself having a knee-jerk reaction to other people’s anger. Before I knew what had happened, I was caught up in their negative energy, sucking it into my soul and pushing it out to the next person I came into contact with. Ouch. “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”—Philo As I matured, I began to gain an understanding that, more often than not, the person who was angry was in serious personal pain. For some, it was physical pain that I could not see. For others, it was emotional pain…which I also could not see. This pain was

32

By Janet Van deWalle

manifesting itself into anger; at times, I matched it and responded in kind. By reacting to others’ anger with my own anger, I was hurting myself and others around me. “How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours.”—Wayne Dyer This reality came full circle for me when, years ago, I read an article that gave me a totally different slant on angry people. I do not remember who wrote it, but it really opened my eyes. It said that, if we saw someone fall down in the street and break a leg, most of us would run out to help. We would be kind, as gentle as we could possibly be, to help that person. What the article recommended was to view someone who is angry, mean, or spiteful as someone with a compound fracture of the leg. Instead of having the knee-jerk reaction of giving it right back to angry people, I should instead treat them with the utmost care and respect. Since I have started this practice, I have found that I am a happier person. I have found that I am a calmer person. I have also found that, at times, it not only helps me, it also helps them. Try it! “A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.” —Amelia Earhart

“A Rose by Any Other Name…” What Name Do You Use? We often paraphrase Shakespeare’s “That which we call a rose/By any other name would smell as sweet.” Juliet was trying to say that the name doesn’t make the man, but we all know that our names are important to us. How do we choose them? Some kids get family names. In my family, Clifford the Second was named for his paternal grandfather, Clifford the First. Cliff was not “Junior” because of the generation between them. My brother was named after our father, Walter Bryan. Mom and Dad called him Bryan (and sometimes Bub or Bubby) because they didn’t want him called Junior, either. Bryan’s oldest son, also Dad’s namesake, goes by Walt. I’m Margaret. Grandma’s middle name was Margaret; I’ve always thought I was named after her. My Aunt Marguerite might also have been an influence. The family calls me Margie. Friends know me as Marge. Our brother is Douglas Robert. Neither is a family name. Dad served in the Pacific in World War II, so it’s possible that Douglas MacArthur’s popularity at the time influenced their choice. I regret never asking Mom how she and Dad chose our names. We didn’t name any of our kids after relatives. Pre-birth, we called the kids Ralph or Baby Shoe. After trying several names for the oldest, we decided on Jeffrey Miles. Geoffrey, while literary, hinted at the nickname Goof, we thought. Why Miles? He was born the day after Thanksgiving (Miles Standish), and one of Cliff’s favorite musicians was Miles Davis. He goes by Jeff.

Support the Veterans in our lives.

We named our second son Scott for no reason except that we liked the name. We considered Victor as a middle name, but Grandpa said he’d never liked his middle name and didn’t want his grandson saddled with it. We ultimately ended up with Scott David because we liked the way they sounded together. Our daughter is Lori. We considered naming her after her grandmothers. Angela May (their middle names) had possibilities. I had a good friend named Sarah Lee in college, but Cliff vetoed that, saying she’d be called Cupcake. Lori Annette was turned down because it sounded like opera glasses. We ended up with Lori Michelle. It suits her! Some kids go by their initials. A cousin is a Junior who goes by JR. A friend is JR simply because there’s another Jerry in the group. A former student told me, “I go by ‘CF’ like my Gramps. That’s what he’s called.” (I can only guess Gramps’ given name.) Some parents start or end names with the same letter or strive for identical family monograms. Kids are often named after famous people, places, or things. Parents, beware! What kids are called has an impact, and their nicknames are often chosen by their peers. Some names may evoke bad memories or breed teasing. How did (or will) you name yours? Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Aladdin’s Rug Gallery Masterpieces for Your Floor By Cheryl Lassota

A well-crafted, vibrant rug can add beauty and tranquility to any living space. Whether saturated in bold color or more subtle in design, a top-quality rug can be a focal point for decorating or the perfect finishing touch. For more than 25 years, Parviz and Patricia Golabi, the owners of Aladdin’s Rug Gallery, have been helping customers find the perfect area rugs for their homes and businesses. “When people come to us, they are purchasing an important item for their home. Customers become like friends and continue to do business with us over many years,” shares Parviz. “Seventy percent of our customers are repeat business. They return to us because the rugs they purchased years ago are of such high quality and are still beautiful. Some say their rugs still look new after 10 years.” The magnificent Chapel Hills Mall showroom makes it easy to view full-size rugs, from the classic symmetry of traditional designs to the bold palettes of southwest designs. “Our large selection accommodates a wide range of tastes and price points,” says Patricia. “Our rugs are sourced from all over the world. We enjoy finding any type of rug a person is looking for, from handmade Persians to machine-made. If it exists, we will find it.” The customer service at Aladdin’s Rug Gallery is top-notch. Customers are welcome to take a rug home for a few days to observe its shape, patterns, and colors in the daylight and at night; to feel its texture; and to determine if it complements the overall aesthetic of their home or office. “If they love it, they can keep it. If not, they can bring it back, no questions asked,” Parviz says. They also carry pads that go under rugs and are suitable for a variety of surfaces, which is particularly helpful for those who are moving and want to take their rugs to their new home. “Many of our area rugs are one-of-a kind pieces of art and cannot be found online,” Parviz continues. Those who have never bought a handmade rug may not have considered what kind of purchase they’re truly making. “A handmade rug comes with a certificate verifying its age, its content, and its market value,” he explains. “Handmade rugs tend to keep their value and can be passed on to loved ones, traded, or sold. When someone finds a rug they love, they know it is a masterpiece. They want to enjoy it!” Parviz can discern where and how a rug was made, how long it took to make it, and how to spot the weaver’s family signature on it. The renderings of intricate woven flowers, leaves, and paisley patterns are much more than whimsy. “Many symbolize the story of a rug creator’s life. Finer, hand-knotted rugs are becoming harder to find,” Parviz says, studying a large silk rug with 85,000 knots per square foot

that can take up to 10 years to complete. He points to framed photos of a 400-year-old rug that sold in New York for 33 million dollars. “We have a machine-made Parviz Golabi, owner copy of it for much less,” he smiles. Customers from coast to coast, from Texas to the Dakotas, and from all over Colorado appreciate the exceptional value and friendly customer service at Aladdin’s Rug Gallery. The Golabis share their extensive expertise and are happy to assist in rug selections by visiting customers’ homes or businesses. “We can trim and cut larger rugs to fit a smaller home, if someone wants to keep a favorite rug,” Parviz says. “We also have clips for stair runners, pillows, and wall hangers for displaying precious rugs or tapestry.” Their affable store manager, George Basta, dropped by 10 years ago, looking for a job. “I was welcomed and treated like family from day one,” says George. “I love working with people and learning from our customers.” Parviz and Patricia met at the University of Colorado in the 1980s. Patricia wanted to remain in her hometown of Colorado Springs, so they opened Aladdin’s Rug Gallery in the Chapel Hills Mall in 1993. In the years since, they’ve raised four sons in Colorado Springs while building a thriving, family-owned business. They give back to their community by donating to charity silent auctions and by offering military discounts. Visit Aladdin’s Rug Gallery, open 7 days a week, inside Chapel Hills Mall, at 1710 Briargate Boulevard. You can reach them by phone at 719-260-8404. Of course, the best way to view a rug is in person, but you can check out their online gallery at aladdinsrug. com. They also offer wash, repair, buy, trade, and appraisals. WE

Colorectal Awareness Month Over 50? Time to Get Tested!

By Leslie Byrne

It’s entirely fair that we don’t want to spend a lot of time thinking about getting a colonoscopy… but we should. Colon cancer is the third most common cancer for both men and women. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be over 104,000 cases of colon cancer in the United States in 2020, as well as 43,000 diagnoses of rectal cancer. As with so many cancers, early detection is key to successful treatment…and that often means getting a colonoscopy! Doctors generally recommend that people start getting screened for colorectal cancer at age 50 years. However, there are some instances (like family history of the disease) when screening needs to occur at a younger age. Most colon cancer cases are not linked to a genetic cause, but five percent are indeed caused by inheriting a mutation from a parent. If you are one of those people who dreads being screened for colorectal cancer, there is some good news—it may be less invasive than you fear. For many, a home stool test is a safe and private way to test for problems. These kits require a person to obtain a stool sample and send it to a laboratory, where the sample is analyzed for the presence of hidden blood in the stool. These tests include the guaiac-based fecal occult blood test (gFOBT) and the fecal immunochemical test (FIT). There is also a test called the FIT-DNA test, which many of us

have seen advertised on television. For this test, a person collects a full stool sample and sends it to a lab, where it is checked for cancer cells. These tests catch about 79 percent of colon cancers and accurately confirm 90 percent of the time when people do not have colon cancer. These tests can also detect 40 percent of precancerous polyps. Polyps are growths on the inner lining of the colon. They are an indication that some cells have changed or are abnormal. If any of these home tests find blood, cancer cells, or polyps in the stool sample, a colonoscopy will be recommended. Doctors recommend screening by the age of 50 years even when someone does not have any signs, symptoms, or family history of colorectal cancer. However, there are some symptoms that mean you need to talk to your doctor. Such symptoms can include diarrhea, constipation, or other changes in bowel habits or in the consistency of the stool. Other common symptoms

include rectal bleeding, blood in the stool, abdominal cramps, gas, or pain. Other signs to watch for are fatigue, unexplained weight loss, or feeling like the bowel is not empty. Many people with colon cancer experience no symptoms during the early stages of colon cancer, which is why screening is so important. If someone is diagnosed with colorectal cancer, the stage of the cancer will determine the treatment. Common treatments include surgery, ablation, radiation, or chemotherapy. Depending on the treatment needed, the patient may be treated by several different specialists, such as a gastroenterologist, a surgical oncologist, a colorectal surgeon, a radiation oncologist, or a medical oncologist. In addition to detecting colorectal cancer, a colonoscopy can also confirm other health problems, such as Crohn’s disease (inflammation of the digestive tract), colitis, chronic inflammation of the lining of the colon, and celiac disease (inflammation caused by eating gluten that damages the lining of the small intestine). If you are looking for lifestyle changes to keep your colon healthy, try eating less red meat and avoiding processed meats. Consider taking probiotics. Work to decrease your sugar consumption, be sure to get plenty of fiber in your diet, and always drink plenty of water. As we discussed above, some lowrisk patients can begin with a home screening test. However, for people with symptoms of colon issues, a family history of colorectal cancer, or concerning home screening test results, a colonoscopy simply cannot be avoided. It may be used for more specific screening, to remove polyps, or to aid in other treatment. This brings us to the main reason that so many people do not get screened early— embarrassment. It is important to remember that the people performing colonoscopies are trained medical professionals who do this procedure every day. They understand that their patients are likely nervous, embarrassed, and uncomfortable with the process, so they work hard to make patients feel at ease and understand that they will be cared for with dignity. Get all the benefits of the early detection of colorectal cancer (or the peace of mind that you’re in the clear). Go ahead and schedule your colonoscopy. Let the professional medical team get you through the process. Sources for this article included: cancer.org, mayoclinic.org, health.clevelandclinic.org, and rush.edu. WE March 2020

Spring Landscaping Planting, Irrigation, and Lighting

By Anne Yankus

Last month, we covered planning elements of hardscaping in your yard, but no yard is truly complete without a little softscaping to provide that finishing touch. Softscaping encompasses planting gardens, trees, and shrubs, as well as installing water and lighting systems. Landscaping is an excellent way to invest in the curb appeal of your home. Working with a professional may seem like an unnecessary expense, but the right expertise can actually save you time and money, both now and in the future. Well-educated and certified landscape designers already know what trees and plants are likely to thrive in your yard and how much care each one will require to properly maintain. They are familiar with the mature sizes of trees and shrubs, which can help you avoid having your yard look overgrown in a few short years. In short, they can save you the trouble of having to tear out the plants that didn’t work out and re-install ones that will. Landscape designers can also help you keep up on the latest trends. Many people still love the look of a lush, green lawn, but modern homeowners prefer to accomplish the aesthetic with lower-maintenance alternatives like drought-tolerant grasses or even artificial grass. Outdoor living spaces, organic and regenerative gardening, and rooftop and vertical gardens are all trending, and wildlife enhancements like birdbaths and animal feeders are making a comeback, as well.

Another problem that designers can help you avoid is planting too much. This over-enthusiastic problem is visually and functionally detrimental to your yard and your wallet. Just like filling your house with too much furniture, over-planting in the yard will detract from your curb appeal and resale value, as well as creating needless extra maintenance. One solution to help with avoiding high-maintenance plants and over-planting, as well as creating a nice variety in your landscape’s elevation, is to have a variety of trees. Trees can provide functional shading or be for purely ornamental purposes. When choosing shade trees, you’ll want to look for fast-growing varieties. Some great choices for this are river or paper birch, tulip poplar, bald cypress, weeping willow, pecan, southern live oak, American sycamore, quaking aspen, and eastern white pine.

For both ornamental and functional trees, consider where you’re planting. For street or curb trees, you’ll want to find a species that is pollution-tolerant and won’t be damaged by road salt—consider sunburst honey locusts or beech trees. Sugar maples, autumn blaze maples, eastern white pines, and Canadian hemlocks are renowned for their great colors in the fall. If you get a lot of deer traffic, Japanese umbrella pines and Kwanzan cherry trees are great choices. Leyland cypress and hawthorns are good options if you live in an area prone to drought. With all this work going into making your yard look lovely, you’ll want it to be visible during more than just daylight hours. Invest in some landscape lighting! Not only will you be able to enjoy your yard well past sunset, you’ll increase home security and personal safety for you and your guests. Hiring lighting professionals is a must when installing your landscape lighting. Find out whether they have any lighting design credentials, consider whether lighting design is their primary focus, learn how personal an approach they’ll take with your wants and needs, and find out what other contractors they are planning to work with (such as electricians or architects). Sprinkler systems have long been a strategy for lowering the amount of maintenance you need to do in the yard. Automatic sprinkler systems can be a great way to save on your water bill, too, as more modern technology allows the systems to sense when it’s raining and to turn off when no watering is needed. Some specialty systems can help with your water needs in the yard. A rotor sprinkler comes up out of the ground and rotates streams of water over the yard. It’s good for larger areas. A soaker hose essentially leaks water through many tiny holes in the hose. This ensures that water gets to the roots of your plants instead of being lost to evaporation when it sprinkles down from the top. A soaker hose can be an efficient choice near shrubs or gardens. Drip systems, commonly used for raised garden beds, are designed to have a single hose on one side of your garden bed that constantly drips into rows within the bed. Drip systems are ideal for vegetable or herb gardens. Don’t let a boring yard be the first thing that your guests and neighbors see! Get started on some planting, irrigating, and lighting projects that will put your home’s best foot forward. Sources for this article included: bobvila. com, thespruce.com, and gardenerspath.com. Positive Perspective

Let’s All Be Rainbows Awakened Doing, Every Day Do you feel that you are a positive person? An optimistic person? Do you bring a ray of sunshine into the lives of the people that you meet? When you wake up in the morning, is it with a smile, feeling excited to go forth into the day and see how many people you can have a positive connection with? “Try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” —Maya Angelou Years ago, when I started Women’s Edition, I decided to make the magazine a positive read. No politics, no religion, no news—no potentially feel-bad stuff at all, just an overall positive experience. We’ve been striving to meet that goal since 1986. This goal extends not only to our readers but also to the businesses that support us through their advertising. When I go out to meet with potential customers, my goal…almost always…is to leave them in a better place than when I walked through the door. I say “almost always” because there are times that I’m just a little worn out. Not at the top of my game. Then, I forget. I forget to set my intention before walking through the door. “Awakened doing is when you don’t create suffering anymore for others—or for yourself—by your own actions. It also implies that your primary intention, the focus of your

attention, is on the ‘doing’ in the present moment, rather than the result that you want to achieve through it.”—Eckhart Tolle Setting our intentions every morning, before we even get out of bed, is a wonderful way to pre-pave the day. It is a great way to point our energies in the right direction. This approach ensures that we get a head start on a positive, fun, successful day. “Inspiration comes from within yourself. One has to be positive. When you’re positive, good things happen.” — Deep Roy The great thing about starting our days in this way is that like so often attracts like. When we make a decision to have a positive impact on others, they will usually have a positive impact on us, as well. When two positive people get together, something magical happens. Over the years, I have met literally thousands of business owners. I have never had the same appointment twice. I learn something every single time. I have grown. I am a better person. That’s what makes this all worthwhile. “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory.”— Dr. Seuss
