Can You Feel It? It’s October! Points of Interest

Heading outside in October awakens all of my senses. I can feel, hear, smell, taste, and see all the changes around me. A favorite of mine is taking all of this in with a Pumpkin Spice Latte’ in hand while I feel the cool air touch my face. The crunch of fallen leaves under my feet usually brings back memories of my kid’s (when they were little) laughing as their head’s popped out of mounds of raked up leaves. I’m reminded of the wonderful seasonal foods, freshly harvested, the scent of wood burning fireplaces that fills the air; this season when coffee, pies, pound-cakes, and fragrances are all pumpkin. Not long ago, the trees were a bright, crisp green. Today, they have changed to magnificent explosions of red, yellow, and gold, shimmering in the sunlight. I have decided that I love fall…and with it…change. Change is inevitable. It’s progress! We can look at change as a loss, like the end of summer, moving away from the town where we grew up, leaving a job, ending a relationship. Or we can see it as a new adventure. Good or bad, change ushers in a chance to grow…to learn something new...to take our lives to a different level. Someone once said, “Every level of your life will demand a new version of you.” This makes me wonder: Do I want to lose the old version? I think the answer is if I choose not to change, then I am choosing not to grow and experience new things. Just as summer changes to fall, it is important for us to change and grow. I have learned to welcome change and the excitement that it brings. This month, I host my annual “Girls’ Night” pumpkin carving at my home. Yes, it is a tradition, which seems like the opposite of change. But our lives have changed, with marriages, graduations, children, grandchildren, new in-laws, and new accomplishments. So, as we gut, drill, carve, and embellish our giant orange gourds, we share how we have grown and are dealing with the changes in our lives. We critique our pumpkins, encourage each other, and leave as better people. As I reflect on change, I am reminded of those who experienced such adversity this past month. Fires, hurricanes, and floods have changed their lives forever. To the heroes who stepped in, those everyday people who chose to risk life and limb for others, we thank you. Our thoughts and prayers are with those still recovering. Please, dear readers, do your research and help where you can. See you in November! (Speaking of change, don’t forget to “fall back” when you change your clocks on Sunday, November 2nd.)

The Breathtaking Colors of Fall It’s Not Just the Foliage! By Holly Bell

In the fall, the fabrics are luxurious, the colors are rich, and the styles are flattering. It’s my favorite fashion time out of all the six seasons. That’s right—in the Midwest, we really have six seasons. In the winter, we’re all bundled up and layered from head to toe. Then comes early spring, when we’re tired of our winter attire, but the weather is not yet warm enough for pastels and bare shoulders. At this time, we put away the heavy gear and go for lighter sweaters. Then we have glorious spring, when we are jumping for joy over everything turning green again, but we still need light sweaters and the occasional leggings. Of course, then comes wonderful summer, when we can burst forth in beautiful florals and can finally bare our shoulders, arms, and legs. Come September, we feel just a little chill, so we put away the sandals and flip-flops and get out cute booties, darker colors, and slightly heavier fabrics. When October blows in, it is finally time for those rich, luxurious colors and fabrics that I’m wearing right now! Enjoy it while you can, before we have to bundle up again. The colors for fall 2017 are some of my favorites. All the shades of red will be gorgeous, from light pink to dark wine tones. Red is particularly flattering when worn next to the face, as it brightens your complexion. Rich olive green is the next color featured this fall. This color is beautiful and fresh when mixed with the next fall favorite: navy blue. In fact, all of these colors can be worn together, as olive and navy are really great neutrals. Rather than always turning to black for your bottom half, try

navy this year. You will find it is just as versatile and has more of a modern look to it. The go-to fabric trend this year will be velvet! From stretchy smooth textures to crushed velvet reminiscent of the 1970s, velvet in all its soft splendor will be everywhere this fall. From pantsuits and dresses to t-shirts and blazers, velvet creates a gleaming opulence in all the colors of the rainbow. An interesting juxtaposition to the femininity of velvet will be menswear looks. Checks, houndstooth, herringbone, and tweed in sharply tailored classic menswear shapes will look great with a touch of velvet. Picture a menswear-cut, black-and-white tweed jacket with a soft, burgundy velvet tank underneath. Classic and fabulous for all ages! With the menswear trend, military looks will also be important, featuring gleaming buttons and shoulder pads. Leather is an ongoing fashion trend for all the cooler seasons. Invest in a beautiful leather moto jacket, trench coat, or even pants and wear them for years. There is something to be said for faux leather, which is a more costfriendly option. Faux leather is so good these days, the only way you can tell the difference is to do the sniff test! Leather looks best when worn with a softer fabric and style. Too much leather can make you look tough, but mix it up with feminine pieces and it is on trend and flattering. Faux fur is another fun, ongoing trend for winter. Again, it can be hard to tell the real from the faux, and it really is an outstanding bargain. Faux fur trim on jackets, sweaters, capes, scarves, and gloves offers a luxurious look without the luxury price. With all this talk of leather and menswear, you might be thinking that you have to give up your glamorous femininity this season. Don’t worry. While these looks are fun options to work into your wardrobe, there are still great trends this season for the girly girl. Fall florals are hot this season, featuring gorgeous bright florals on dark backgrounds. Lace and sleeve interest will be moving forward with bell sleeves, lantern sleeves, multiple-tiered sleeves, and more innovative cutouts and designs. Thank goodness that shine and sparkle will still be around this season—I could not possibly give them up! Shiny boots and bags are cool with those tailored looks for fall. More femininity abounds, with the soft lingerie looks still popular. Kimonos worn over dresses or jeans will add a fresh vibe to your fall wardrobe. Silky fabrics slink out of the bedroom in satiny blouses, slip dresses, and pajama-inspired pantsuits. This season has so many wonderful offerings, I can hardly wait to turn my closet into fall! I’m planning to add some new divine pieces in the luxurious velvets and rich fall tones of olive, navy, and red. This fall, join me in mixing it all together! I always feel best when I’m dancing to the beat of my own fashion drum. Fall Football Feasts, Goblins, and Shadows! By Kate Beiting

Apple Pie with Dutch Crumb Topping

For the pie: Bake a prepared pie crust (in the pie plate) at 400 degrees for 5 minutes, then remove from the oven. In a large bowl, mix 6 cups of peeled, cored, and sliced apples (a mix of Grannies, Jons, golden delicious, any tasty apples) with 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, two-thirds cup of sugar, 2 teaspoons of flour, threefourths teaspoon of cinnamon, one-fourth teaspoon of ground nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Mix well, pour into the pie crust, and dot with a few cubes of butter. For the crumb topping: Mix three-fourths cup of flour, one-half cup of sugar, one-half teaspoon of cinnamon, and one-third cup of butter. Rub the ingredients with your fingers until crumbly. Pour over the pie. Bake on a cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 60 minutes. Festive Red Peanuts Heat 2 Tablespoons of oil in a skillet. Stir in one 12-ounce jar of dry roasted peanuts, along with one-fourth teaspoon each of garlic powder, ginger, and cayenne pepper. Stir to coat. Add a dash of sugar. Cook for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and cool. Store in a covered container. Caramel Dip Mix two 8-ounce cubes of softened cream cheese with one-half cup of brown sugar. Spread mixture out onto a serving platter or plate. Warm a container of caramel apple dip in the microwave for 20

seconds. Drizzle over the cream cheese. Top with crushed peanuts, a bag of toffee or toffee chips—whatever you like for a little crunch. Serve with graham crackers, wheat crackers, or apple wedges. Brats and Chopped Cabbage In a large skillet or stockpot, cook 4–6 slices of bacon until crispy. Add a chopped onion and 2 cloves of minced garlic. Add 1–2 pounds of chunk-cut kielbasa or brats, and sauté for 5 minutes until brown. Add 1 cup of chicken broth and one-half head of chopped cabbage (throw in a cubed apple for interest). Cover and simmer for 15–20 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste, and add more broth, if needed.

Fried Green Tomatoes (You still have tomatoes on the vine, don’t you?) In one bowl, mix 1 cup of white cornmeal, one-half cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of sweet paprika, 1 teaspoon of Lawry’s seasoned salt, and a dash of salt. In another bowl, mix 1 egg and one-third cup of milk. Core two large green tomatoes, cut off the ends, and slice into four slices. Dip the tomato slices in the flour mixture, then in the egg mixture, and then back into the flour mixture. Heat onefourth cup of oil in a cast iron skillet. Fry the tomatoes until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Quick Family Pork Chops Brown 4–6 pork chops in a skillet for 4–5 minutes (the browning creates another layer of flavor). Place the chops in a casserole dish (or use the same skillet, if it can go in the oven). Sprinkle the chops with ground pepper and 1 teaspoon of poultry seasoning. Pour 1–2 cans of chicken and rice soup over the chops. Add a few peeled and cut-up sweet potatoes around the chops. Add 2 sliced apples on top of the chops, and cover with foil. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until the chops are done. Zucchini Brownies Melt 2 Tablespoons of butter and 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips (on the stove or gradually in the microwave— careful not to burn it!). Add 1 cup of sugar to the melted chocolate, then add 1 egg plus 1 egg yolk. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla and 1 cup of grated zucchini. Mix together one-half cup of flour, one-half teaspoon of baking powder, and one-half teaspoon of salt. Add the wet ingredients to the dry until combined. Grease an 8-inch baking pan and line with parchment paper. Pour

the mixture into pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Let cool for 1 hour. Frost with chocolate frosting, if desired, or dust with powdered sugar. To make ganache frosting, heat 3 Tablespoons of cream until bubbly. Remove from heat, add three-fourths cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips, and stir until melted. Baked Cinnamon Apples (You can control the amount of sugar in this dish.) Peel, core, and slice 6 large apples. Place them in a buttered 9x13-inch casserole dish. Mix together 3–6 Tablespoons of brown sugar, 3 teaspoons of ground cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples. Mix 1 teaspoon of vanilla into one-fourth cup of water and sprinkle over the apples. Dot the apples with 6–7 cubes of butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 35–40 minutes until tender. You can add red hots for some zip. Pumpkin Cookies Mix one stick of soft butter with one-half cup of vegetable oil. Blend in one-half cup of canned pumpkin, 1 cup of sugar, one-half cup of powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and 2 room-temperature eggs. Mix together 4 cups of flour, one-fourth teaspoon of baking soda, one-fourth teaspoon of cream of tartar, one-half teaspoon of salt, and one-half teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix well. Scoop by Tablespoons onto a prepared cookie sheet, lightly flattening the dough. Bake for 9–10 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool. Glaze with a mixture of 3 cups of powdered sugar, 4 Tablespoons of milk, and one-fourth teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice. Makes 3–4 dozen cookies. WE

Tai Ji Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Whole-Body Healing

By Amy Lynn Lopina

A pleasant aroma and a pot of hot tea create a peaceful welcome at Tai Ji Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Clinic. Owner and practitioner Debbie Hsiao Ki Ting is a certified and nationally licensed acupuncturist and a certified herbalist. She has a Master’s degree in Oriental Medicine and is a Diplomate in Oriental Medicine (a designation given by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine). “Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have always been a part of her life,” says Todd Nickolas, Debbie’s business manager and husband. Born in Hong Kong, Dr. Ting grew up in Taipei, Taiwan. Her family moved to Southern California when she was 16 years old. Her passion for health and healing others led her to earn degrees from Samra University of Oriental Medicine, in Los Angeles, and Beijing Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, in China. Dr. Ting opened her own practice in Colorado Springs, where she has worked for 14 years. When a patient comes in for an appointment, Dr. Ting takes her time going over the patient’s health history as well as her diet and lifestyle. “She spends a good length of time with her patients, finding out what they need,” stresses Todd, and that approach is different from Western medicine. “She wants to know as much as she can about her patients—who they are and exactly what is going on in their lives. If a patient comes in and says that something hurts, the entire system—the whole person— will be evaluated.” After the consultation, Dr. Ting performs a full range of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnosis techniques. This includes a detailed examination of the patient’s tongue and pulse. “In TCM, there are different qualities measured in the pulse, which can tell her a lot about what’s going on in the body,” explains Todd. After a full assessment, Dr. Ting creates a treatment plan. Typically, patients receive a treatment during their first appointment. Dr. Ting is licensed to dispense Chinese herbs and to perform acupuncture, and she uses both of these tools to help her patients. “The herbs used are all-natural—nothing synthetic,” Todd notes. He explains that two people may present with the same condition, but each may require a completely different course of treatment. One may get herbs, one may not, or they may get completely different herbs. At Tai Ji Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, treatment is fully customized to each specific patient. Depending on the issue, one or several treatments may be needed before a patient starts seeing and feeling results. Patients are amazed when the pain or illness they have

12

experienced for years is gone, Todd shares. Skeptical attitudes toward Chinese medicine in the United States have changed over the Debbie Hsiao Ki Ting, years. “When we started 14 years ago, many people saw owner and practitioner us as a last resort. Now, many see us as the first option,” Todd continues. “People don’t always want to accept surgery or pharmaceuticals as their only options. Most people who come in are open to our process. Some are not yet convinced, so we make sure that education is part of our process during every visit.” The proof is in the healing results, Todd notes. “We’ve had patients whose spouses have brought them in, kicking and screaming, and they leave saying, ‘I can’t believe how much better I feel!’ We’re losing the stigma of being alternative. Now, we are the only choice for many people.” That said, Todd notes that they highly value what Western medicine can do for patients. “We acknowledge our limits and don’t discourage people from going to a Western medicine doctor, if that’s what’s best for them. When it’s appropriate, we refer out. We never practice what’s beyond our scope.” Dr. Ting treats infants to seniors for a wide variety of health issues, from arthritis aches to autoimmune disorders—even fertility issues have been successfully treated. “We’ve had couples who tried for many years to get pregnant and have successfully had babies after our treatments,” says Todd. Traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture have also helped slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in some patients. Dr. Ting is trained in neurological acupuncture and treats PTSD and depression, as well “I’m in awe of what she does,” Todd concludes. “She has that special touch—not every acupuncturist has that. She’s very intuitive and gives 200 percent of herself in each treatment. Her reputation for her service and the results her patients receive are so rewarding. It’s what has made her successful.” Sessions are by appointment. Tai Ji Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture is located at 7621 Austin Bluffs Parkway, Suite 100, in Colorado Springs. A Woman’s Work

Fright Night Why We Scare Ourselves Silly

By Sharon Knierim

Things are getting scary—it must be Halloween. Do you jump when someone shouts, “BOO!”? Do you feel uneasy in the dark? How about those moving shadows at the edge of the yard or in the dark corners of rooms? What was that loud THUD upstairs? You thought you were alone in the house, didn’t you? BOO! Gotcha! For a very long time, Halloween was a holiday enjoyed (or dreaded) mainly by children, who dressed up as fictional characters and visited every house in the neighborhood, looking for treats. Many adults felt trapped when youngsters sang out, “Trick or Treat!” The only way to get those kids off the doorstep was to bribe them with candy or treats. For the most part, these little spooks were good-natured and would never play a trick on someone who was giving them candy and goodies. Children and adults alike enjoyed this oncea-year festivity while creating long-lasting and highly treasured memories. The focus of Halloween and the methods of celebrating it have changed over time. Many schools no longer encourage classroom parties during this season, so the thrill of dressing up, parading, and garnering treats at school has gone by the wayside. Instead, organizations, shopping malls, and churches often host Halloween parties featuring costumes and treats. Some of these highly organized functions even feature games and prizes. Of course, adults are welcome to participate…if you

watch closely, you’ll see these grown-up and overgrown kids having lots of fun right alongside the children. One of the mainstays of long-ago Halloween parties was bobbing for apples. Today’s healthcare workers shudder when they learn how this was done. A large tub was filled with cold water and apples were added. Two by two, children and adults attempted to “capture” an apple with their teeth while their hands were held behind their backs. Does that sound healthy? Because we are now much more sophisticated about germs, there probably isn’t an apple bobbing contest held in the civilized world these days. Can you imagine the germs and bacteria floating around in that water and on those apples? If an apple left in the water already had teeth marks in it, a contestant could still attempt to bite into it as it remained in the water. Now, that’s scary!

Today, Halloween is all about scaring ourselves enough to want to leave the lights on for a few nights. Movies certainly have the ability to make our hearts beat faster. Characterizations of absolutely revolting humans, animals, insects, and otherworldly creatures abound. Modern special effects leave nothing to the imagination; for some of us more squeamish folks, it is almost more than we can bear. Still, we are spellbound by images too horrible for most of us to imagine on our own. We seem to have evolved from scary to shock and revulsion. Really, though—why do we expose ourselves to such frightening images and ideas? Professionals who deal with this type of phenomenon tell us it’s part of our nature to do so. Intrinsically, we seem to need a little excitement in our lives and an opportunity to question reality’s boundaries. It’s a good thing most of us only do this once a year! Recently, we viewed the movie “The Exorcist.” By 2017 standards, this is a pretty mild movie, but it really frightened a lot of people when it was first released. That fright affected even people who were known to be logical and not given to suggesting otherworldly activity. But there is no reason to lose heart if you relish the entertainment value of fright. It can be fun, especially if you’re watching a movie with friends who are willing to leave the lights on. On the other hand, if you are faint-hearted (and many of us are), you should not place yourself in this situation. The Halloween costumes of yesterday were primarily cowboys and pirates for little boy spooks. Of course, little girls liked to dress up as princesses and angels. In addition, there were plenty of sheet-clad ghosts out on Halloween night. Occasionally, a witch would show up with a pointed black hat, or Frankenstein might come lumbering up the sidewalk, but there were surprisingly few monsters. Fast forward to 2017, and complicated costumes have become an integral part of the Halloween scene. Much planning is put into assembling outfits to scare the daylights out of us. What we would not accept on any other night of the year is apropos on Halloween. Luckily for many of us quieter souls, these scary images are usually attending a private party rather than haunting neighborhoods. Have fun on Halloween, but leave the lights on, just in case. BOO! Drug-Free Treatment Chiropractic Helps So Much More Than Back Pain By Ellen M. Walker

Most people assume that chiropractors are good for a stiff neck or lower back pain. Chiropractors do indeed treat those problems, but there are so many other things they can do! The central nervous system pretty much rules the roost regarding the whole health of your body. This is why chiropractic care, which focuses on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems, is recognized as a holistic approach to total body health. Chiropractic consists of hands-on, drug-free methods that can provide health benefits for people of all ages, even infants and children. The best-known procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic (DCs) is spinal manipulation, also known as a chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractors refer to misalignment of the spine as a subluxation. Think of the spine as the main highway for our nerve impulses to travel through. When there is a fender bender, the road becomes blocked, and everything that was being transported along the nerve system highway on its way to the brain gets stuck in traffic. To clear the road, a chiropractor adjusts the spine so the central nervous system can get back to making the whole body function properly again. Chiropractic focuses on maintaining your health naturally to help your body resist disease, rather than simply treating the symptoms of disease. Your chiropractor will work in partnership with you to ensure your optimal health and wellness. She will look at many factors that affect your health, including exercise, nutrition, sleep, environment, and heredity. So, what else do chiropractors treat? They may help you find relief from all sorts of ailments, including sciatic pain, joint pain, headaches, migraines, temporomandibular (TMJ) disorders, shoulder and arm pain, foot pain, plantar fasciitis, digestive issues, and pregnancy-related pain. A pediatric chiropractor can treat infants, children, and teens. Many common childhood disorders can be linked to spinal dysfunction. These include recurrent ear infections, persistent sore throats and colds, asthma, scoliosis, headaches, bedwetting, constipation, and growing pains. Birth can put significant stress on a newborn’s spinal column, and chiropractic adjustments have been found to be very beneficial to these youngest of patients. Signs of spinal distress in infants may include colic, unusual crying, excessive gas, and decreased appetite. A chiropractic adjustment on an infant uses an extremely light touch to realign the vertebrae. Chiropractic care might be the answer to increased sleep and happier babies by removing the subluxation and opening the nerve path. The Activator Method is a diagnostic and treatment system used by some chiropractors. With this method, the chiropractor uses a small, handheld instrument to deliver a gentle force to the spine. This gentle technique works

16

well on pediatric patients as well as patients with arthritis. Many children suffer from chronic ear infections, which, in some cases, lead to a surgical procedure to insert tubes into the child’s ear. Chiropractic adjustments have allowed many children to overcome repeated infections because their neuro-immunology function was restored. Chiropractic may even boost the function of your child’s immune system, helping to keep her healthy and happy. As a child grows and becomes more active, chiropractic care can help keep her in top physical condition. Many professional athletes and sports teams get regular adjustments to keep themselves in good competitive form. If injuries arise, chiropractic care can reduce or eliminate the need for any drug usage during recovery. Do you sit in front of a computer all day long? Over time, regular chiropractic adjustments can help you improve your posture. This can be particularly beneficial when it comes to the curve in your neck. With the now-ubiquitous use of handheld digital devices, many people are developing neck issues at younger and younger ages. Regular chiropractic care may improve your posture, to keep you standing taller and stronger. If your joints feel stiff when you get out of bed (or even just up out of your chair), chiropractic care may help. Adjustments can restore movement to joints through the relaxation of the muscles around the stiff joint, which brings normal mobility back to the area. This helps your body move with full strength by restoring function and movement. Are you feeling depressed? When you have a chiropractic adjustment, your body’s entire system is rebalancing, including your body’s chemistry. People who are suffering from certain chemical imbalances often benefit from regular chiropractic care. Individuals with ADHD have also seen benefits with regular adjustments. As a secondary benefit, chiropractic can help you maintain overall health by reducing your mental stress levels. If physical pain is preventing you from performing daily tasks or job duties, you will probably feel stressed out about it. This stress can lead to medical conditions like high blood pressure and lowered immune response. If pain is stopping you from

www.womensedition.com

taking part in your regular exercise program, you may end up suffering both mental and physical stress. Like medical doctors, chiropractors are regulated by state licensing boards. They are required to obtain their education from a nationally accredited institution. Upon completion of a fouryear doctoral graduate school program, chiropractors must pass national board exams to get a license to practice, and they must maintain their license annually by earning continuing education credits. As technology advances, so do chiropractic techniques. Chiropractors are using sophisticated technology to help better treat their patients. For example, a thermal scan can get a snapshot of how your nervous system looks. Then, your chiropractor can make more accurate care recommendations and have better clarity regarding your overall care plan. A newer instrument called ArthroStim can also be used on patients to produce the same “thrust and recoil” motion a chiropractor would use with her hands to adjust the spine. The instrument can produce this motion very quickly (12 times per second), so it saves the chiropractor a lot of strength. (Ironically, many chiropractors suffer injuries in the wrist, back, and shoulder from treating patients with these forceful and repetitive motions.) Because the instrument focuses on a very small treatment area, its force radiates through the surrounding joint and tissue, which may reach the trigger points that often cause muscle spasms. The rise in opioid abuse in the United States makes this a great time to explore the benefits of chiropractic that are natural and offer benefits to your whole body—without drugs. In response to the opioid epidemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in March of 2016, released guidelines

HELLO ! If you’re not advertising in Women’s Edition, you’re not advertising!

719.227.0262

for prescribing opioids that also promote non-pharmacologic alternatives for the treatment of chronic pain. In 2017, the American College of Physicians (ACP) updated its own guidelines for the treatment of acute and chronic low back pain to recommend first using noninvasive, non-drug treatments before resorting to drug therapies. These revised guidelines were based on a review of randomized controlled trials and observational studies. They include spinal manipulation as an option for noninvasive, non-drug therapy for low back pain. You don’t need a referral to make an appointment with a chiropractor, but it may be wise to consult with your primary care physician about your pain or limited range of motion. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) encourages patients and healthcare providers to first exhaust conservative forms of pain management, when appropriate, before moving on to riskier, potentially addictive treatments such as opioids. While seeking relief, your chiropractor may recommend multiple visits per week, for two to four weeks, or until your pain is reduced. As you get back to full motion, she may suggest maintenance visits for routine care, along with a balanced diet and exercise, to keep your body in optimum health. Just as a fever is the body’s way of destroying a virus that invades the body, chiropractic care allows the body to self-heal by keeping the nerve pathways in the body clear. Regular chiropractic adjustments have improved overall health and wellness and quality of life for many patients. Chiropractic treatment can provide natural, drug-free relief from many everyday pain symptoms, including both acute and chronic pain. The Art of Nesting

Inspired Interiors for Wintertime Living By Robyn V. Powell

As winter sets in, falling temperatures and early dusk awaken the nesting instinct within us. Our desire for a cozy refuge inspires us to create an inviting indoor space to escape the chilly winter nights that lie ahead. Thanks to recent innovations in home technology, there are some great ways to create a warmer home while conserving energy. With a little planning and wise investment, it’s possible to transform your home into the perfect retreat for you and your family to welcome winter’s arrival. Beating the cold winters starts at ground level. On a chilly morning, just the thought of stepping onto an ice-cold floor tile is enough to make you want to stay in bed. Start your day off on the right foot by stepping onto a toasty floor. Radiant heated floors—underthe-floor heating systems that provide an even and continuous level of warmth—may seem like a luxury, but they can be installed with far less expense and effort than you might expect. While ideally suited for new construction or remodels, in-floor heating can even be installed beneath existing tile or hardwood floors, so long as there is access to flooring from the basement or a crawl space. Radiating the heat at floor level allows you to keep your home’s temperature lower, reducing your overall heating costs. The costs of running a system are modest, particularly if you install a programmable thermostat. Energy-efficient heated floors enhance

Custom

your home’s value and reduce energy costs, and a high-quality, properly maintained system can last 35 years. Bathrooms are the most popular rooms for this feature, but in-floor heating systems are showing up in kitchens, basements, mudrooms, and family rooms, where barefoot owners, children, and pets alike can play or curl up on a heated floor. Heated walks, driveways, and patios may sound too good to be true, but if you like the idea of hanging up your snow shovel for good, you may want to consider installing such a system. When temperatures drop, heated water and antifreeze are pumped through tubes, melting snow or ice before it accumulates. You simply flip an indoor switch and watch the snow disappear. Systems are equipped with sensors to take care of snow while you are away from home. In some cases, they can even be placed under existing concrete. ›››

Nothing brings warmth home quite like a fireplace. Whether it’s a snowy Christmas morning or a festive holiday party, a magical fireplace sets the stage for memories that will last a lifetime. A fireplace creates an instant focal point in any room and, with new advances in energy efficiency, they have never been more cost-effective. Older fireplaces can be resurfaced with marble, limestone, or tile, giving them a stylish makeover. A direct vent fireplace is an ideal choice when adding a new fireplace or for remodels where units can be inserted directly into existing masonry fireplaces. Direct vent fireplaces do not require a chimney and can be vented directly through a roof or wall. They are recommended for their efficiency—70 percent of the heat generated by a direct vent fireplace remains in the home. They are much easier to install than traditional wood-burning or gas masonry units and offer greater flexibility in placement. For smaller spaces or budgets, a costeffective option is a ventless fireplace—that is, a free-standing unit that doesn’t require a chimney or flue and is powered by natural gas, propane, or electricity. These units are less expensive and easier to install than traditional fireplaces, but you should still have it professionally installed to ensure proper safety. Whether you opt for wood burning, gas log, or a contemporary wood stove, there are styles for any taste and budget and many ways to personalize your new fireplace. Choose from iridescent glass beads that look almost like burning ice or crackling birch gas logs that make you feel like you’re nestled away in a snowy mountain chalet. If your fireplace has a chimney, be sure to have it professionally cleaned at least once a year. Feather your nest with soothing textures, soft earth tones, and warm wood accents. Introduce textiles made with luxurious fabrics, such as velvet pillows, faux-fur throws, or an heirloom quilt. For a finishing touch, bathe your home in the soothing soft glow of ambient lighting. Choose lamps with shades in soft hues to fill the room with warmth and comfort. Scented candles like rich vanilla, spicy cinnamon, and warm cocoa invite cozy memories and turn your home into a welcoming retreat. Get a head start on dressing your home for winter and leave time to enjoy your home while you plan for the holidays. Follow your inspiration and create a warm, inviting place you and your guests will never want to leave. Out and About

Perfectly Matched Love is Love By Cheryl Lassota

“You invest your life, your heart, your body and soul in something— when the odds are only 50 percent that it’s going to work out,” notes Donna Shugrue, proprietress of Perfectly Matched. “Why would you do that based primarily on physical attraction?” Donna understands that physical attraction is an important part of a good relationship, but “that only takes you so far. There must be other mutual interests and goals if you are going to make a serious commitment and find the right person. That’s what I help people do.” Donna recognizes that most initial impressions are based on physical attraction, but she reminds us not to rely on it exclusively. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Often, people limit themselves to a particular ‘look’ and decide in a nanosecond if they are attracted to someone. It’s like looking across a car lot, seeing a shiny car, and saying, ‘That’s the one!’ without asking any questions or taking a test drive,” she quips. “I appreciate the opportunity to help my clients find someone to love for the rest of their lives.” “I do the opposite of what people do on their own,” Donna explains. “I start with mutual compatibility. Then, when people are attracted to each other, there is much greater potential for success.” She uses a profile survey to identify clients’ six major personality areas: temperament, sociability, conformity, affection, religion, and finances. She encourages realistic expectations and matches individuals with mutual long-term goals. “Having a similar long-term goal is important. If not, most often, the relationship will end.” Donna is beginning her 27th successful year in business, so you know she was a matchmaker long before online dating became popular. “Online dating is polluted with insincere people cheating, scamming, and lying. It is time-consuming and ineffective. Some people aren’t honest and don’t even look like their pictures!” she exclaims. “Online, you never know if the person you are meeting is genuine. I meet personally with everyone, verify a driver’s license and birth date, and I’m even authorized to do a background check. My clients are often surprised at how much I know about them, but I am extremely discreet. Client information is stored privately and confidentially.” Perfectly Matched clients meet like-minded people, so there’s no game-playing. “There is someone for everyone, and by the time someone comes to me, he or she is serious about finding love,” Donna continues. Matched clients first meet for one hour on neutral territory. After the meeting, Donna gets their feedback. “That takes all the pressure off and doesn’t put anyone on the spot with someone they’ve just met. People can be reluctant to say, face to face, that they don’t want to meet again. If the other person doesn’t

24

let you know where you stand, I will,” she states. “I don’t want to see anyone hurt, but I don’t waste anyone’s time, either.” The client agreement at Perfectly Matched is not based on a certain amount of time; it’s based on a particular number of matches. Donna is very fair about what counts as a match, and not every person you meet will necessarily count as a match. “There’s no time limit on my service,” Donna explains. “No one expects to work with me for years, though sometimes they do. My agreement always honors the number of matches each client purchases, or ends if they marry.” Donna helps people see dating from a lighter point of view. While working to find someone special, each client enjoys meeting interesting people with mutual interests. She suggests that matched couples approach each other with the idea that they could end up as friends. “My intuitive senses are really fine-tuned,” Donna shares. “If there’s hesitation, if one doesn’t feel the chemistry, I ask if they would look forward to seeing each other again as friends. Wherever the relationship goes, it should start with friendship.” When clients are on the fence, Donna suggests they give it a chance and go out once more. “Many times, I’ve seen friendships blossom into romance,” she reflects. “Sometimes it takes just a little spark—as opposed to knocking your socks off—to evolve into a lasting, healthy relationship.” Mark and Lynette are one of over 700 couples who have married after seeking out Perfectly Matched. Mark recalls working with Donna for over three years. “It was the best phone call I ever made!” he says. “I met many good people and learned much about the dating world.” And of, course, he met Lynette! For more information, call Donna at 719-338-2316 or visit PerfectlyMatchedDating.com. You can read Donna’s “Dear Donna” advice on the Perfectly Matched Facebook page at Facebook.com/PerfectlyMatched. Mirror, Mirror Fighting the Signs of Aging With Injectables By Monica L. Davis

We all age, whether we’re ready or not. Although many of us would like to age with a graceful attitude, we sometimes catch a glimpse of something in the mirror that we don’t particularly like. Many visible signs of aging are brought on by volume loss as our facial tissue thins out. This, combined with years of facial expressions, allows wrinkles and fine lines to form—even if you spent more time smiling than frowning! Both women and men may feel frustrated with the visual effects of aging that can make a person appear tired, unhappy, or even irritated! Thankfully, dermatologists and plastic surgeons offer many options to help fight those signs of aging. One such option is known as cosmetic injectables. Some injectables work by paralyzing muscles; others are dermal fillers, adding volume underneath the skin. Botox is used cosmetically to remove wrinkles. During the treatment, tiny amounts of botulinum toxin are injected. The injections block signals from the nerves to the muscles in the targeted area. When the muscles can’t contract, the associated wrinkles relax and smooth. The number of injections needed depends on many factors, including the extent of the area being treated. Botox is commonly used for the forehead, the area between the brows, and fine lines around the eyes. The effects from Botox last three to six months. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to reappear. They often appear less severe over time because the muscles are shrinking.

Normal activities may resume immediately after the procedure. Dysport and Xeomin are similar to Botox. Xeomin, the newest form of botulinum toxin, is used to erase dramatic wrinkles caused by repetitive facial muscle movements. Dysport is also used to smooth fine lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows, on the forehead, and around the eyes. Xeomin or Dysport can be administered in about 30 minutes, and most patients resume regular activities the same day. Results are typically noticed within a few days of treatment and will last three to six months. A dermal filler is a gel-like substance that is injected beneath the skin to add volume. The skin over the treated area stretches to accommodate the increased volume, which smooths lines and creases and enhances facial features. Many of these fillers are made with hyaluronic acid (HA), which causes the plumping and hydrating effects. These fillers are typically infused with lidocaine to minimize

discomfort during and after the injection. The Juvederm product family offers many variations of these injectables, which vary in concentration based on the location and depth of the injection. Volbella is the latest FDA-approved injectable in the Juvederm family. Volbella is designed to plump the lips and minimize the appearance of fine lines around the mouth. Volbella has a lower concentration of hyaluronic acid than some fillers, which decreases the chances for swelling. It can be used with other noninvasive injectables such as Botox or other Juvederm fillers. Patients can resume normal activities the same day as treatment. Teosyal Redensity combines dermal filler techniques and mesotherapy. Mesotherapy uses multiple tiny injections of vitamins to restore the skin’s light-reflecting properties. Combining hyaluronic acid and components naturally found in your skin, the serum provides an antioxidant protection to treat dehydrated skin and acne scarring. The treatment is done in three sessions at three-week intervals. Results last nine months to a year. Radiesse works by adding volume under the skin, which, over time, stimulates the body’s natural collagen development. Because it works with your body’s own collagen to diminish fine lines and wrinkles, the injection provides natural-looking results that last for at least a year. For more dramatic outcomes, Restylane injections are gaining popularity. Restylane has a success rate for reducing or eliminating wrinkles around the mouth and nose that less invasive treatments may not reach. Restylane contains no lidocaine; therefore, patients may experience some pain and discomfort during the procedure. Restylane is typically done in a physician’s office under local anesthesia. Selphyl is a platelet-rich plasma treatment that uses your own blood cells to improve facial volume. In one 30-minute procedure, your blood is drawn and processed to separate the platelets. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the targeted area on the face. Multiple treatments may be required. When selecting a provider, treat this as you would any healthcare procedure: Check credentials and be assured that she has training, knowledge, and experience in the type of injectable treatment you seek. Regulations on who can perform cosmetic injections vary by state. Check with the Department of Health in your state for local regulations. Dynamic Physical Therapy Getting People in Motion By Sue Teehan

The atmosphere at Dynamic Physical Therapy is just that: dynamic. Their central motivation is to help patients get better by offering rehabilitation services designed to control pain without the use of medications. To accomplish this goal, they offer a wide range of therapeutic treatments. These include manual therapy, orthopedic rehab, aquatic therapy, hyperbolic oxygen therapy, pelvic floor treatments, Alpha-Stim, cold laser therapy, dry needling, cupping, and the Graston Technique, to name a few. “We work with patients of all ages and all walks of life, including babies, seniors, veterans, and athletes,” notes Monna Yassa, the practice administrator. “My husband, Emad ‘Eddie’ Yassa, is a licensed physical therapist and founded this company in 2007. We have two clinics—one on International Circle, and a 13,000-square-foot building on North Union, near Vickers. At present, our team consists of 26 employees.” Monna and Eddie were married in Southern

Staff Physical Therapist California. They are the parents of two children: Ashley White Stephanie, who is a student at Colorado State University, and Steven, who attends Discovery Canyon Campus. Monna feels that a large part of the success of their practice is due to two reasons. First, is the one-on-one treatment each patient receives. Every patient is valued. Their progress is Dynamic’s top priority. Second, is the wide variety of treatments available at Dynamic Physical Therapy. increased to three times higher than normal to build blood oxygen within the patient’s system. This can promote healing and help to fight infections. Treatments take about one hour. For patients who are claustrophobic, low-level laser treatments are used. A therapist or therapist assistant is always in the water with patients who undergo aquatic therapy in the indoor pool, which is in the North Union location. The water is five feet deep, and the temperature is held at 92 degrees. There is a chair lift for patients who need assistance getting in and out of the pool. Aquatic therapy promotes healing because the buoyancy of the water and the moist heat reduce the risk of joint injury. These individual treatments help those with arthritis, fibromyalgia, obesity, and balance and gait issues. Pain in the pelvic area may be caused by increased or decreased sensitivity or irritation in the tissues that surround the pelvic organs. Oneon-one, private treatments for these disorders support abdominal and pelvic organs to help control bladder and bowel functions, eliminate painful sexual activity, treat prolapsed uterus, and address postsurgical problems. “We work with babies and toddlers, too,” adds Monna. “We see a condition called torticollis, where an infant is unable to turn her head from side to side. The aim of occupational therapy is to help people achieve independence in all areas of their lives. Occupational therapy interventions focus on adapting the environment, modifying the task, teaching the skill, and educating the patient/family in order to increase participation in and performance of daily activities. “We try to make the referral process easy,” Monna explains. “What we need is a physician’s referral for therapy, as well as the patient’s insurance information and phone number. We will then obtain the insurance authorization and call the patient within 24 hours to set up their first appointment.” Dynamic Physical Therapy’s two locations are: 2855 International Circle (719-447-8822) and 5775 North Union Boulevard (719-434-7044). Gourmet Food for Thought Recognizing When Something Feels Good I went out to dinner with my brother and his wife last night. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision that ended up being a night full of laughs, stories, and great food. When I left the restaurant to drive home, I realized that I was really quite happy. I always like to “take note” when I’m feeling happy. Recognizing when something feels good and being appreciative of it will bring more of those types of experiences into our lives. And who wouldn’t want more happiness? “Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.” —Groucho Marx I must admit that I put an awful lot of effort into being happy and staying happy. Before I go to bed at night, I tell myself that tomorrow is going to be a good day. I am going to have fun. I am going to be happy. So, what happens if I wake up in a bad mood? This does not happen very often, but on the rare occasion that it does, I stay in bed and talk myself out of it. Most of the time, it works. On very rare occasions, the clock is ticking and I have to get to work, so I push on through. This is when I receive wonderful clarity on how lousy it feels to be unhappy!

By Janet Van deWalle

“Being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. It means that you’ve decided to look beyond the imperfections.” —Anonymous Making the decision to be happy is not always easy. Let’s face it, there is something in our human nature that likes to complain and rehash stuff that is not going the way we would like it to. It takes a commitment to avoid the easy road, which means that I strive to only put “good stuff” in my brain. “Happiness is not the absence of problems, but the ability to deal with them.” —Anonymous Making the decision to be happy—even when there are challenges in life—is not as hard as it sounds. We just need to get rid of the garbage that we are putting in our brains and start feeding it with gourmet meals…all the time. What are those gourmet meals? Notice when you are smiling or when someone smiles at you; laugh—loudly—every single day; and notice every single time when you are happy and then milk it for all it’s worth! Before we know it, happiness will be the norm. And then life just keeps getting better and better. Gee, that thought makes me happy. How about you? What is your gourmet food WE for thought? WE

Turn Left… Break Out of Your Rut My brother called the other day. We’ve both been traveling, and he was checking in, as we do at least once a month. “How are things?” he asked. “Same old, same old,” I replied. “You need to make a change,” he advised. “Turn left! I did, and I like the difference it has made.” At first, I wondered what he meant. When driving, it’s easy to turn right…no traffic lanes to cross. It takes a bit more effort to turn left, especially from a two-way street. You also can’t get out of a rut without turning the wheels. I decided he was saying I was in a rut (same old, same old). I agreed that I should change things up…try something different. When I go to visit my daughter, I usually take the same route. It’s familiar. I know where to stop and what to expect. It’s safe. This time, I decided to turn left and follow a different path. Las Vegas, New Mexico, was only about 50 miles out of the way. I took a two-lane highway…no traffic (I saw two other cars), no trucks, and an abundance of scenery and wildlife. I visited a state park nestled between red rock bluffs and the Pecos River. I drove through a small town where people waved as I passed (driving slowly because of children and pets along the road). The Las Vegas in New Mexico was built when the railroad was built and that path was being considered for Route 66. A branch of the railroad still comes through town, but the Mother Road crossed further south, where the terrain

is flatter. After that adventure, I decided that turning left is a good idea. Routine has its place in our lives. We all have schedules to keep and deadlines to meet. Ball games, dance lessons, meetings, practices, classes—these things require schedules because they affect many people. Day-to-day activities could never be maintained if our lives were in chaos. Our schedules are usually hectic enough without the added stress of inconsistency. But sometimes, getting out of that routine is like taking a vacation. Get out of your rut. Try something new. Develop a sense of curiosity and a desire for learning. Encourage appreciation of adventure and daring. Show the kids the way…they’ll learn by following the example you set. If the kids have studied something in school that is close by, take a weekend trip to visit that location. It makes what’s learned in school stick…it becomes something concrete. When festivals are staged in your city, take the family. You all might learn something new. Once the family experiences the fun of learning or doing something different, they’ll experience success. We all know success breeds more success. Take a chance. Turn left! Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Gordon N. Shayne, Attorney at Law Integrity and Truth From Clients

By Frances Diana Hayden

Gordon Shayne is a seasoned attorney in divorce and family law with 37 years of experience. His breadth of knowledge and expertise would be most appealing to any person seeking counsel, especially one embroiled in a child custody case, or parental responsibilities case. Issues swirling around child custody impact not only the children and their parents but also grandparents, kinship caregivers, and other guardians of the children. In short, child custody is of paramount importance to any person who has been entrusted with a child, either formally or informally. Gordon reveals something imperative that prospective clients should know about him in their quest for substantive legal counsel: He expects all of his clients’ cards on the table. “Within the first minute, I can sense a person’s credibility,” he explains. “I can often tell when someone is fabricating a story. Honesty is a two-way street. Clients must be up front with me. If my clients do not share all relevant information in a complete and honest way, they are, in essence, handcuffing me.” Gordon works hard to lay out a legal strategy aimed at helping his clients achieve success. “I cannot be sitting in mediation, and, for the first time, learn negative facts about my client they have neglected to report. One example would be a client who has concealed that he or she had been prosecuted for driving under the influence.” This type of surprise is more than a professional inconvenience—a client’s case can hinge on it. “A judge’s ruling is based upon the credibility of the parent and is often times, the critical tipping point of almost every case,” Gordon notes. As a former prosecutor in child abuse, homicide, domestic violence, and sexual assault cases, Gordon long ago, transitioned into family law as a natural progression to help parents and their children. He feels that the transition was a significant decision in committing his practice to understanding how the law protects parental rights in Colorado. Gordon believes it is critical for clients to enlist experienced counsel to navigate the court system. “Family law issues are quite different from cases in other areas of the law,” he explains. “The parents and children are operating under extreme levels of stress. They do things they would not ordinarily do, and the consequences are therefore, ‘huge.’” He brings up an issue that many people may not consider; an issue that he has faced many times in family court—the legal ramifications of having children outside of marriage without drawing up formal parent/custody orders. To illustrate, he cites the example of parents of a child who have never been married. The parents may or may not be sharing parenting time, with no custody order in place. A quarrel ensues, and one of the parents takes off with the child and leaves Colorado. This leaves the court with few options in the event of a dispute.

34

The parent opposing the child’s departure believes that this constitutes Gordon N. Shayne, kidnapping while the parent who leaves with the child Attorney at Law thinks it is “okay.” Under the law, however, both parents have equal access to the care and custody of the child. Some judges will regard the removal of the child as an emergency, while others will ask, where does an emergency exist? Gordon says one judge told him that unless there is a severed limb or someone is about to die, there is no emergency. Why would any parent want to let a judge take control over a child’s life that capable parents should easily be able to do? Once Gordon agrees to represent a client, he gives them a homework assignment including a written timeline of events. He wants all pertinent information documented in a notebook, with the client logging all verbal exchanges, problems, text messages, and emails. In his experience, most parents do not understand that children are not permitted to testify in court in these types of disputes. While the law in Colorado cannot prohibit a parent from living wherever he or she wants, it can prevent a child from being relocated from Colorado. To determine if a child should be relocated, the court must consider the interaction and interrelationship between the parents and the child and all pertinent factors. The best case scenario occurs when parents agree to a parenting plan. Judicial decisions are solely dictated by what is in the best interest of the child and this is something a judge will do if parents refuse to do or cannot do. “This line of work hardens you and makes you realize it is tough, particularly when parents abuse alcohol or there are facts of substance abuse, violence, and anger,” Gordon says. However, he stresses the benefits for clients who call his practice. “They can access my staff 24/7.” Before and after Gordon is hired, people can speak to a “live” person regarding their case. “Everyone here has tremendous lifetime experiences, including my wife, Sherry, who is my office manager, and Gail who is the leading paralegal, so that our clients can have a full understanding of their rights and responsibilities.” If you are enmeshed in a child custody or other family law disputes and are seeking skilled counsel, schedule your free consultation with Gordon. The Law Offices of Gordon N. Shayne are located at 509 North Tejon Street, in Colorado Springs. For more information, visit www.ShayneLaw.com or call 719-442-6649. WE

Beating Breast Cancer Odds Are Up With Community Support

By Kylie Gumpert

Breast cancer is something no one wants to experience. Thankfully, the odds are higher than ever that a woman will leave breast cancer in the dust for good. Five-year survival rates for women with stage one breast cancer have increased 30 percent since the 1970s. Today, according to the American Cancer Society, these women are 99 percent likely to live. Even those whose breast cancer is more advanced have many more options and experienced specialists to choose from. Breast cancer diagnosis and treatment have become more specialized and accurate. Three-dimensional (3D) mammography is considered a more accurate method than a standard 2D mammogram for examining breast tissue for cancerous cells or masses because it can capture more detailed images. A study out of the University of Pennsylvania found that 3D mammography is better at diagnosing breast cancer and that it helps patients avoid unnecessary biopsies. Most biopsies turn out to be negative, which is good news, but they still result in stress and discomfort for patients and can increase healthcare costs. In some cases, using multiple screening methods can be more effective at analyzing breast tissue for abnormalities. This may include coupling 3D mammography with optical imaging, which uses light to capture images. According to the American Cancer Society, women should start getting annual mammograms at age 45. When they’re 55, they should go in for testing every other year. Women had long been told that

they should undergo annual mammograms starting at age 40—and for women with other risk factors for developing breast cancer, this is still recommended. However, experts have more recently agreed that the benefits of this more rigorous testing schedule weren’t clear. For many women, the unnecessary fear instilled by false positives from mammograms can end up doing more harm than good. For many years, chemotherapy was hailed as the ultimate treatment for breast cancer, even though it has its drawbacks. But as we’ve learned more about how breast cancer can spread and what can prevent it, there are many treatment options to explore outside of chemotherapy. Certain medications can more specifically target what is causing breast cancer to develop or spread. For cancer cells to multiply, they need blood vessels to form around them. This process is called angiogenesis. Blocking this process may stop those cells from spreading. Estrogen-production inhibitors are also being studied to prevent breast cancer. Surgery is a common treatment for breast cancer. Undergoing

oncoplastic surgery means a surgeon will remove the cancerous parts of the breast while also reshaping or reconstructing the breast tissue that remains. This type of surgery will help maintain the symmetry of the breasts, which otherwise could be widely different in size and shape. In some cases, double mastectomy (complete removal of both breasts) is required to remove all the cancerous tissue. Many women subsequently undergo reconstructive surgery with breast implants. These days, some women are opting out of reconstructive surgery and “going flat” instead. For many years, this wasn’t considered an option. However, as women share their experiences with reconstructive surgery, which may result in complications like infection or implant failure, a supportive group of survivors has formed to talk about why breasts are not necessary to living a happy life as a woman. There are also complementary methods that may be used in conjunction with the treatment a doctor recommends. These may include massage, acupuncture, or eating certain foods to help manage stress and pain. Especially after surgery, it’s important to remain active to reduce swelling and maintain full range of motion. Your doctor will share simple exercises that you should do that will help your healing process. You may also work with a physical therapist to better understand your body’s needs and capabilities. After treatment or surgery, ask your doctor about a survivorship plan, which will lay out when you need follow-up appointments, exercises you should do, possible side effects, and suggestions for support groups. As any doctor will attest, a woman’s self-esteem and positive outlook are vital to her quality of life after breast cancer treatment. Breast cancer is brutal, and it can seem to take away the things that make a woman feel beautiful. But a woman’s beauty is not her breasts and it’s not her hair: it’s her. If you are more comfortable with implants or without, with wearing a wig or going bald—choose what makes you feel good about yourself. For a little extra comfort, consider visiting a wellness spa that specializes in post-treatment pampering. You’re not alone on this journey! Ask your physician where to look for support outside the doctor’s office. Breathing Easy Optimize Your Indoor Air Quality

By Anne Yankus

Air quality is essential to clean and healthy living. To get the most out of your indoor air, you need to make sure your air quality appliances are efficient and cost-effective. Even if you’re comfortable with what you have, it’s worth taking a look at your current HVAC, humidifiers and dehumidifiers, and air purifiers to make sure they’re right for your home. Deciding when to replace your HVAC unit can be tricky— after all, if it’s not broken, why fix it? First of all, if you wait until your furnace or air conditioner breaks during peak usage, you’ll probably end up paying more because you won’t have time to do any research. According to Energy Star, a good rule of thumb is to consider replacing any heat pump or air conditioning unit after 10 years, and any furnace or boiler after 15 years. When shopping for new models, keeping track of all the efficiency ratings and scores can be daunting. Keep in mind that the highest rated air conditioning units for 2017 have SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) scores of 20 or higher. Of course, you don’t choose an HVAC system on energy rating alone. Single-stage units, which operate at full capacity all the time, are popular in the warmest or coldest climates. For those of us living in between, multi-stage units provide a more efficient option. Zoned systems heat or cool selective areas of your home using valves and dampers within your ducts.

38

New “smart home” technologies allow you to access the HVAC system through your smartphone or other device while you’re not at home. As with any major purchase, it’s natural to be concerned about being oversold when buying a new HVAC. The best way to avoid this is to do some research. First, ask yourself the following questions: Do my utility bills seem too high? Is my current HVAC system noisy? Is there a problem with excess humidity in the summer or dry air in the winter? Are there rooms that are too hot or too cold? Do any family members have allergies? Does the heating or cooling unit constantly turn on and off? Then, talk to your contractor. It’s fine to ask, flat-out, which type and size of system is right for your home (a good contractor will be honest). Ask how the unit he recommends will feel different from what you have now. Get at least three bids to make sure the first opinion isn’t an outlier. Find out if there’s anything you need to do in your home or yard to accommodate the installation. Ask questions about financing or energy

www.womensedition.com

rebates, and be sure to get the warranty in writing. Controlling the humidity in your home may seem like a superfluous task, but it can be important to both your breathing comfort and skin health. High humidity makes the air feel hotter than it is and can encourage the growth of mold. Low humidity makes the air feel colder and can exacerbate dry skin. Ideally, your in-home humidity level should stay between 30 and 50 percent. To keep the humidity down in your house, you can use a portable dehumidifier and take advantage of exhaust fans when cooking and bathing to remove the steam. To dampen the air, portable humidifiers are popular and easy to use. There are also wholehome units, which work in conjunction with your HVAC and control the humidity levels in your house with optimal efficiency. Regular cleaning and maintenance for any humidifier is essential—a dirty humidifier runs poorly and can contaminate the air. Cleaning a humidifier is relatively easy and can be accomplished with white vinegar or bleach, a soft-bristled brush, and plenty of water. Another item to consider is an air purifier. While there is little to no definitive scientific evidence that air purifiers will relieve respiratory symptoms caused by asthma or allergies, the best air purifiers can indeed filter out pollutants such as dust, smoke from candles or fireplaces, and pollen. An air purifier is not meant to be a substitute for regular vacuuming and HVAC filter maintenance, but it can give you an extra boost toward cleaner air. Most air purifiers work by sucking in ambient air and blowing it past a filter. Models that don’t use a fan (they filter air as it naturally flows) are quieter but less effective. Air purifiers need to be cleaned and have filters changed regularly to maintain efficiency. Most models are portable and can be moved from room to room. If it’s been a while since you’ve considered your air quality appliances, take a look. Using the systems that are right for your home and your family’s needs can make a world of difference. Positive Perspective

Supposed To Be Fun Do What You Love “I like life. It’s something to do.” —Ronnie Shakes Life is something to do—and it’s supposed to be fun! Have some fun with your life. Have fun with your work. That’s a real challenge for some people. Some people take their work too seriously; it has become a labor of labor rather than a labor of love. They lose sight of the bigger picture of life. All areas of life are supposed to be fun. Life moves pretty fast and sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in all the “busyness” of life; we forget to enjoy being there. That seems particularly true within the world of work. I have several acquaintances who absolutely hate what they do. They never seem to get any joy from their work, and they seem to spend more and more of their time working. It tends to spread over into all the other areas of their lives. They really don’t seem to have much fun anywhere. They not only don’t seem to enjoy much of life, they don’t seem to be very alive. “It is extreme evil to depart from the company of the living before you die.” —Lucius Annaeus Seneca The living take time to look around and enjoy life. They find ways to enjoy something about their work or else they find a new job. Life is not worth being miserable all the time. They find something to enjoy about their relationships or they develop new relationships. They have wisdom to know they can’t expect everything and

everyone to change for them, so they create change in their own lives. They seek their joy wherever they go, and they bring joy wherever they go and to whomever they meet. “Do something for the joy of doing it and pray you won’t be punished.” —Sammy Cahn It will be worthwhile because you will feel alive—more alive than you’ve felt in a long time. You’ll have stretched your imagination. Enjoy taking a few risks, breaking a few rules, being a nonconformist—it will make you feel alive! “Learn young about hard work and manners, and you’ll be through the whole dirty mess and nicely dead again before you know it.” —F. Scott Fitzgerald I know that lots of people really enjoy having clear standards of behavior, well defined rules, and seemingly limitless lists of limits; it just seems to make life so simple and easy. I think it makes life boring. When you’re having a great time doing what you love to do, you’ll succeed well beyond anyone who’s just working hard. Sometimes that requires you to stretch beyond all these traditional limits and defined rules of conduct. Take a risk. You don’t have to hurt anyone or violate anyone’s rights in order to bring more joy into your life. WE
