Editor’s Notes
October’s Beauty Have you ever taken the time to have someone give you a facial? When you sit down, the first step is closing your eyes and relaxing. Then begins the washing away of the day and getting rid of those old skin cells. Your skin repairs itself and makes way for fresher, brighter skin. It’s sort of like how the crisp, cool air of the fall season washes away the earlier part of the year with every golden leaf that floats to the ground. Yes, it’s October already. All year long, I’ve been complaining about how fast time is flying by and how the Christmas rush looms in the near future…and then I realize that I am the one who is putting my life on fast-forward. I’m not enjoying the moment right here and now. If I allow myself to see it, to slow down and drink in the beauty of this time of year, October brings a quiet, restful feel for me. As the leaves change and eventually let go of their branches to make way for next spring’s new life, the air feels somehow cleaner, and everything begins to fit together. My guess is that I’m not the only one who forgets to enjoy the right-now moment I’ve been given. Now that you and your friends are back from vacations and the kids are settled back into the school routine, give yourself permission to have a day of renewal. Give your husband a relaxing facial—maybe he’ll reciprocate! How about the kids? Get them involved in the importance of taking a moment to refresh by putting down anything with a screen and enjoying being pampered on your terms. Maybe a drive to see the fall colors in the mountains would be a nice break. Since their hands are nearly glued to phones and devices, challenge them to take their focus away from social media for a minute and take pictures of the trees and leaves. How many colors can they pick out? As for me, I will take this moment and begin to prepare for what only October holds. I will not cave in to the temptation to fret about what needs to be done in the coming months. That means inviting my grown-up friends over for a relaxing pumpkin facial, pumpkin chai tea, and tiny sandwiches with linen napkins. Later: GIANT pieces of pumpkin cheesecake. Wishing you a restful, refreshing, pumpkinflavored October (or whatever your favorite flavor is).

Fashion Worthy PLAID
Fall Trends for 2019 Comfort and Easy Dressing By Holly Bell
The leaves are starting to fall already, and there is a certain scent, feel, and sensation in the air. What I love most about the Midwest is the beauty of the changing seasons. It always feels like a new beginning, and there is nothing like that first crisp fall day. An additional bonus to living in a climate with four seasons per year is that we get to change up our wardrobes to suit every season! Time to bring out those soft cozy fabrics we love to feel against our skin. Fall makes me think of faded blue jeans, washed to a super-soft finish, topped with a plaid shirt and a vest or blazer. It’s the perfect fall outfit for an easy-going day. If you haven’t indulged in the plaid trend yet, this fall is a great time to jump in! Designers are mad for plaid this season. You will find plaids and checks everywhere this fall, from classic patterns to brightly colored tartan to black and white houndstooth. Another great pattern for fall 2019 is camouflage. It is more than shades of olive green! Camouflage is more versatile and creative than ever this year and is being done in many colors. Top contemporary designers have included it in their new fall collections. It is just about impossible to get tired of the denim trend, as designers have served up every possible way to wear jeans. Love the skinny jean? They’re in! Love boyfriend styles? They’re in! Feel like you look best in a straight leg? They’re in! Even a VESTS flare that covers your shoe is in! The fabrications are also very diverse. From solid fall colors like rust and brown to faded and destructed, there is a style for everyone. My preference is a darker solid color made from cotton, with some stretch and a high waist. This style was once known as the “Mom jean,” and people thought they were unflattering. CAMOUFLAGE These days, the highwaisted style has a more flattering cut, and people just love them. Add a cool plaid shirt, half-tucked into your jeans, with a medium-width leather belt, and you are in style for fall. Vests and blazers are also important this fall. Adding the third piece to any outfit elevates it to a put-together look. Blazers are the perfect casual-to-work addition to any wardrobe. Designers love the tailored look this season, with a defined padded shoulder and a belt. Some blazers come with a matching belt; if not, just add one of your own to get in on the trend. The belted look is hot for fall! Another cool look is to wear a blazer with your favorite jeans and a ruffled, high-necked blouse. For

performance fabrics, consider fleece. Last year, it was all about the puffer jacket, but fleece is on trend this fall. Sleeves have become a focus for fashion over the last few seasons. This trend will continue with cutouts, ruffles, and Renaissance looks. Try a blouse adorned with puffy sleeves and ruffles tucked into a slim jean with booties for another knockout look. SLEEVES Now, let’s talk about dresses. What’s not to love about onepiece dressing? One and done! It’s easy, comfy, and brings a total look with little time and effort. The prairie dress has been haunting

us since spring and will continue its momentum. It usually features a stretchy waist, a cropped sleeve, and a long, billowy skirt. You’ll find these very easy to wear and as comfortable as a nightgown. They are beautiful this fall in florals with darker backgrounds. For cooler days, add a jean jacket or a leather bomber and booties to be on trend. This may become your go-to outfit. Two more great styles worth considering this fall are animal print and gold accessories. Wearing real fur may have fallen out of favor, but wearing animal prints certainly has not. Designers have not only loved the natural black, white, taupe, and brown of animal prints, they have gone wild with colors less true to life. You can use these items to bring color to your wardrobe and enjoy the bold feeling of rocking an animal print. Let fall fashion lead you to a new appreciation for the gorgeous upcoming season and the delightful changes it will bring to your wardrobe. Take a walk and feel the crisp air. Notice the how the sky is bluer than usual! Does anyone else smell cider and apple pie? Homemade Applesauce Wash, peel, and cut up 2 or 3 pounds of apples (try getting some at a local orchard). Place in a large saucepan with 1/2 cup of water. Bring to a boil, then cover and reduce heat. Simmer on low for 30 minutes, stirring often. Add 1/2 to 3/4 cup of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice. Adjust the amount of spices and sugar as desired. Cook for another 5 minutes. You can also put everything in a slow cooker and cook on low for 4 hours. Refrigerate or eat warm. Apple, Egg, and Sausage Casserole Peel and chop 2 apples. Toss with 2 Tablespoons of sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice. Set aside. Put 8 slices of cubed French or Italian bread into a lightly greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Top with 1 pound of cooked and crumbled sausage. Add the apple mixture. Sprinkle 2 cups of grated cheddar or Jack cheese over the sausage mix. Mix 3 cups of milk with 9 eggs. sweet onion in 2 Tablespoons of olive oil. Add the tomatoes, mash them a bit, and let them cook for 10 minutes. Add 1 clove of minced garlic and 3 cups of vegetable or chicken stock. Break up the tomatoes and let simmer for 20–30 minutes. Add whatever seasonings you like: salt, pepper, bay leaf, basil, Old Bay. Stir in 1 cup of cream or half-and-half—do not boil. Leave it chunky or use an immersion blender to smooth it out. Adjust seasonings as needed. Serve with grated cheddar and garlic toasts. Refrigerate or freeze leftovers. Chicken and Apple Gravy Put 4 Tablespoons of flour and 1 Tablespoon of cornstarch into a zip-top bag, along with several dashes each of salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Add 4 chicken breasts (flatten them a bit). Shake the chicken and flour together. In a large skillet, heat 2 Tablespoons of oil and add the chicken pieces (shake off excess flour). Sauté for 3–4 minutes on both sides to brown. Remove chicken from skillet. Add a sliced onion to the skillet and sauté for several minutes—you may need to add another Tablespoon of oil. Add 2 peeled and sliced apples, and stir them around for a few minutes. Return the chicken to the skillet. Add 1 cup of apple cider. Cover and simmer for 5–10 minutes, until the chicken tests done. No-Peek Oven Football Stew Sauté 1–2 pounds of cubed stew beef in 1 Tablespoon of oil for 5–10 minutes, until browned. Set aside. In a lightly greased stew pot or deep casserole dish, layer 4 cubed potatoes, 4 sliced carrots, 1 sliced onion, and 2 chopped celery stalks. Place the beef on top. Mix 3 cups of tomato juice with 1 Tablespoon of sugar, 3 Tablespoons of tapioca, and salt and pepper as desired. Pour the juice mixture over
the meat mixture. Cover and bake in a 250-degree oven for 4 hours (or put everything in a slow cooker on low for 6–8 hours). Serve with baking powder biscuits or garlic bread. Zucchini Bars For the bars: Mix together 3 large eggs, 1 cup of canola oil, and 2 cups of sugar. In a bowl, whisk 2 and 1/2 cups of flour, 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture, along with 2 cups of grated zucchini and 3 teaspoons of vanilla. If desired, add 1 cup of chopped nuts or 3/4 cup of raisins or chopped dates. Spread into a lightly greased sheet cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20–25 minutes. For the frosting: Mix 1/4 cup of soft butter with 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 1 pound (about 3 and 3/4 cups) of powdered sugar, and 3 ounces of softened cream cheese. Spread on cooled bars. If you prefer, skip the frosting and dust the bars lightly with powdered sugar. Dutch Crumb Apple Pie Bake a prepared pie crust for 5 minutes at 400 degrees and remove from oven. In a large bowl, toss together 5 cups of peeled and chopped apples, 3/4 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Pour the apples into the pastry crust. With your fingers or a pastry cutter, crumble together 3/4 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of butter, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/3 cup of sugar. Pour the crumb mixture on top of the apples. Place the pie pan on a cookie sheet and bake at 425 degrees for 10 minutes. Lower the oven temperature to 350 degrees and bake for another 45–50 minutes or until brown and bubbly. WE

Parental Kidnapping and Child Abduction
Choosing The Best Attorney By Lisa Boness
When issues arise in hostile parental relationships, they are often highly charged, emotional situations. In cases of parental kidnapping (also called custodial interference) and child abduction, promptly enlisting the services of a specialized attorney can make all the difference in the outcome. The Law Offices of Gordon Shayne have been focused on family law in Colorado Springs for over 30 years. Attorney Gordon Shayne understands the nuances of advocating for parental rights when one parent has relocated the children out of state in opposition of Court orders. “Ordinarily, parents who have no Court orders that define where the child lives and what kind of parenting time either parent has will be impacted when a parent violates an informal agreement between the parties,” Gordon explains. “The importance of having parenting agreements approved by a judge is vital, so that if a parent violates the parenting agreement, the guilty parent can be held responsible per the orders of the Court.” An initially amicable agreement between two people to share parental responsibilities can change down the road. Without the protection of these responsibilities as defined by the Court, one parent may be left with little to no recourse or with an expensive legal battle, should the other parent decide to move the children out of the state. An experienced family law attorney should possess the kind of specialized legal and trial skills and knowledge to give parents appropriate legal advice. “The list of parental responsibilities is far greater than just determining how holidays will be divided,” notes Gordon. In some cases of child abduction, a child may be taken out of the country. “Many situations occur when children are wrongfully taken from one or both parents, both throughout the United States and internationally,” says Gordon. “Some of these cases involve immigration laws and require specific expertise.” Hiring an attorney with the specialization needed for different types of parental kidnapping or child abduction situations is important. What had been an acceptable arrangement between parents—without the benefit of defined and Courtapproved responsibilities—can change quickly. Take the case of “Beth” and “Tom” as an example. Beth and Tom never had any Court-ordered parenting orders to address parenting time or child support because, as Beth said, “they always agreed about the kids and got along.” Tom was named on both children’s birth certificates, and he and Beth always made joint decisions affecting the children. At first, they both lived in Denver. Beth was the
12
primary parent, and Tom had parenting time every other weekend. Beth met “Bob,” who lived in Flagstaff, Arizona, when the children were 6 and 8 years old. During the Christmas break that year, Bob asked Beth and the children to move into his home. When Tom called the children to wish them a merry Christmas, one of the children said that they had packed up all of their things and were now living in Arizona. “When Tom found this out, he contacted Beth, who refused to respond to phone calls, text messages, or emails. Later that day, Tom made a 911 call to the Denver Police Department to report that his kids had been abducted,” shares Gordon. Because this was a civil matter, Tom took the advice of the police officer and hired an attorney. “This attorney told him that, since no parenting orders existed, the only thing that could be done was for him to file an Allocation of Parental Responsibilities case in the District Court where the children had last lived—in Colorado,” says Gordon. After six weeks of waiting for the Court to get to his case, Tom missed a planned ski vacation with the children. Beth was eventually declared the primary caregiver, after Tom had exhausted his money fighting the case. Tom was ordered to pay child support and had his custody dates limited to certain holidays. The children stayed in Arizona to live with Beth and Bob. A family law attorney, like Gordon Shayne, helps craft parental rights agreements that protect parents like Tom. Quick action when an agreement is violated is important, too. With over 30 years of experience, Gordon knows the ins and outs of these types of cases. “If you feel that your children have been abducted or kidnapped, contrary to a Court order, contact me immediately so we can discuss your options and a legal strategy that can be used to protect you and your children,” says Gordon. Learn more about Gordon’s practice at shaynelaw. com or call his office at 719-442-6649. The Law Office of Gordon N. Shayne is located at 509 North Tejon Street, in Colorado Springs. WE

Child Educational Challenges Turn Frustration into Fluency
By Maria Harding
Striving for academic success can put a lot of pressure on students, teachers, and parents. More and more emphasis is placed on test scores and student grades as measures of educational standards, college readiness, and school accreditation. When a student falls behind in one or more subject areas, what can be done to help? Above all, it’s important that students know that their well-being is our highest priority. All young learners need a network of people they can trust. If they are made to feel ashamed for a lack of understanding, they may never again reach out for assistance. All students struggle at some point in their education, and we should make sure they know that they are not alone. We can recognize that a student is struggling through a variety of cues. Certainly, if children have the self-awareness to say that they do not understand a subject or a concept being presented in school, we should pay attention and express appreciation for their trust. Teachers’ assessments are also valuable. Though we know and love our own children better than anyone else does, it’s important to remember that teachers and administrators are experts who work with countless other children of the same age. Behavioral issues might be expressions of general frustration with learning. We can watch for changes in behavior that are aggressive or disruptive, but we should also keep an eye on tendencies to be sleepy, depressed, or anxious. Once a problem has been identified in the classroom, it’s important to examine what the causes may be for the learning difficulty. Speak with your doctor or other healthcare specialists about possible medical impediments. Potential diagnoses may include vision or hearing impairment, dyslexia, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, or ADHD. Simple and preventable factors such as inadequate sleep or lack of nutrient-rich meals may also contribute to learning difficulties. Frequent absence from class can also create chaos for students when they miss crucial introductions to new material. For this reason, try to encourage good health and hygiene habits, and schedule outside appointments for days with no school. To begin to address a learning challenge, start by communicating with the classroom teacher; many teachers are willing to provide more one-on-one time before or after school. Get in touch with counselors or school psychologists, who are wonderful resources for referring students to support programs that are specific to their needs. Students may also benefit from supplemental instruction from a private tutoring program. All students learn differently, and private instruction might offer a fresh approach that resonates better with your student. Computer gadgetry and the latest technology are not enough and should never be substitutes for a personal guide to learning, but a tutor should not be doing the work for a student, either. Some of the best programs
have the student “teach” the material back to the instructor to ensure total comprehension. Another advantage of private tutoring is the greater availability of after-school hours. Tutors are often available to chat online or meet at your home or at another convenient location. Look for programs that offer scholarships or sliding-scale fees to ensure that all students have equal access. Private tutoring programs are also a fabulous way to help students prepare for standardized testing at every level. Even current college students who want to do well on the GRE, MCAT, or similar graduate school evaluative tests can benefit from specific instruction. The instructors in these programs are familiar with the most up-to-date versions of the tests, which undergo periodic restructuring and revision. Students are taught how to prepare long-term, by focusing differently on strengths versus weaknesses, and they are given tips on how to be at their best on test day. Have fun exploring other resources that may promote serenity and build a student’s confidence in the classroom. Brain balancing can reduce anxiety and promote optimal conditions for learning. This holistic, drug-free approach to learning typically focuses on three areas of development: motor and sensory processing, academic conditioning, and nutrition. The motor-sensory activities promote good muscle tone, enhanced coordination, fine motor skills, and rhythm and timing. The academic exercises focus more on the varied styles of learning, to strengthen both the fundamentals and the more subtle abilities to infer and intuit. Though the pressures on today’s students are more varied and intense than ever, the options available to them for support and assistance are correspondingly diverse. A Woman’s Work
Fright Night Why We Scare Ourselves Silly
By Sharon Knierim
Things are getting scary—it must be Halloween. Do you jump when someone shouts, “BOO!”? Do you feel uneasy in the dark? How about those moving shadows at the edge of the yard or in the dark corners of rooms? What was that loud THUD upstairs? You thought you were alone in the house, didn’t you? BOO! Gotcha! For a very long time, Halloween was a holiday enjoyed (or dreaded) mainly by children, who dressed up as fictional characters and visited every house in the neighborhood, looking for treats. Many adults felt trapped when youngsters sang out, “Trick or Treat!” The only way to get those kids off the doorstep was to bribe them with candy or treats. For the most part, these little spooks were good-natured and would never play a trick on someone who was giving them candy and goodies. Children and adults alike enjoyed this oncea-year festivity while creating long-lasting and highly treasured memories. The focus of Halloween and the methods of celebrating it have changed over time. Many schools no longer encourage classroom parties during this season, so the thrill of dressing up, parading, and garnering treats at school has gone by the wayside. Instead, organizations, shopping malls, and churches often host Halloween parties featuring costumes and treats. Some of these highly organized functions even feature games and prizes. Of course, adults are welcome to participate…if you
watch closely, you’ll see these grown-up and overgrown kids having lots of fun right alongside the children. One of the mainstays of long-ago Halloween parties was bobbing for apples. Today’s healthcare workers shudder when they learn how this was done. A large tub was filled with cold water and apples were added. Two by two, children and adults attempted to “capture” an apple with their teeth while their hands were held behind their backs. Does that sound healthy? Because we are now much more sophisticated about germs, there probably isn’t an apple bobbing contest held in the civilized world these days. Can you imagine the germs and bacteria floating around in that water and on those apples? If an apple left in the water already had teeth marks in it, a contestant could still attempt to bite into it as it remained in the water. Now, that’s scary!

Today, Halloween is all about scaring ourselves enough to want to leave the lights on for a few nights. Movies certainly have the ability to make our hearts beat faster. Characterizations of absolutely revolting humans, animals, insects, and otherworldly creatures abound. Modern special effects leave nothing to the imagination; for some of us more squeamish folks, it is almost more than we can bear. Still, we are spellbound by images too horrible for most of us to imagine on our own. We seem to have evolved from scary to shock and revulsion. Really, though—why do we expose ourselves to such frightening images and ideas? Professionals who deal with this type of phenomenon tell us it’s part of our nature to do so. Intrinsically, we seem to need a little excitement in our lives and an opportunity to question reality’s boundaries. It’s a good thing most of us only do this once a year! Recently, we viewed the movie “The Exorcist.” By 2019 standards, this is a pretty mild movie, but it really frightened a lot of people when it was first released. That fright affected even people who were known to be logical and not given to suggesting otherworldly activity. But there is no reason to lose heart if you relish the entertainment value of fright. It can be fun, especially if you’re watching a movie with friends who are willing to leave the lights on. On the other hand, if you are faint-hearted (and many of us are), you should not place yourself in this situation. The Halloween costumes of yesterday were primarily cowboys and pirates for little boy spooks. Of course, little girls liked to dress up as princesses and angels. In addition, there were plenty of sheet-clad ghosts out on Halloween night. Occasionally, a witch would show up with a pointed black hat, or Frankenstein might come lumbering up the sidewalk, but there were surprisingly few monsters. Fast forward to 2019, and complicated costumes have become an integral part of the Halloween scene. Much planning is put into assembling outfits to scare the daylights out of us. What we would not accept on any other night of the year is apropos on Halloween. Luckily for many of us quieter souls, these scary images are usually attending a private party rather than haunting neighborhoods. Have fun on Halloween, but leave the lights on, just in case. BOO! Medical Day Spas A New You Awaits! By Janette Calabro
It is said that a woman’s beauty grows as time passes. I’m not here to disagree with this, but a little time spent at a medical day spa can go a long way to help the real you shine through. What is a medical day spa? Imagine yourself walking out of a relaxing, luxurious spa with a younger look—a smoother silhouette, rejuvenated facial skin, and fewer wrinkles—all without the need for surgery. A medical spa (sometimes called a medi-spa) likely provides massages and pedicures, but they’re famed for their more advanced procedures. Medical spas often fuse the pampering of a day spa with specialized treatments like skin rejuvenation, anti-aging therapies, and services to tackle body fat. Procedures are usually performed by a medical doctor (often a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon) or, at minimum, under the doctor’s general supervision. The American Medical Spa Association describes a medical spa as “a hybrid between an aesthetic medical center and a day spa, with four elements: (1) the provision of non-invasive (i.e., non-surgical) aesthetic medical services; (2) under the general supervision of a licensed physician; (3) performed by trained, experienced, and qualified practitioners; (4) with on-site supervision by a licensed healthcare professional.” Medical spas adhere to strict safety and compliance regulations. Let’s take a look at some of the medical treatments offered to help the best you shine through. Moderate acne that appears on your face, back, or chest gets extra attention at a medical spa. Stubborn blemishes can be removed through excision. After a numbing agent is applied, a small incision is made in the skin to drain the acne papule. Minimal scarring is possible, but most blemishes heal completely without scarring. Microdermabrasion is another great option for mild acne and acne scars that cause pits in the skin. This procedure removes the outer layer of skin, revealing a smoother layer underneath. Microdermabrasion is often used to even out skin tone, remove sun damage, smooth out wrinkles, lessen age spots, and even minimize stretch marks. When the dead skin cells are removed, you’re left with skin that looks and feels younger and healthy. You might need up to 12 sessions, commonly performed one or two weeks apart. Expect the feeling of a gentle sander, though the highly pressurized crystals can be adjusted for comfort and desired effect. Mild to moderate acne might also do well under blue light therapy, a natural blue or violet light that reduces sebaceous hyperplasia or enlarged oil glands. This pain-free light therapy also treats sun damage and evens out skin texture. If you experience seasonal affective disorder or even just feel down on rainy days, blue light therapy may provide some relief. Blue light morphs into photodynamic therapy when combined with
16
light-sensitive topical treatments that are activated by the light source—this is often the procedure when skin cancer growths are treated. Expect to get comfortable in a darkened room, wearing goggles to protect your eyes. Patient sessions last from 15 to 90 minutes, depending on what is being treated. Even as technology evolves into new and better treatments, there are still some good old-fashioned services that aestheticians perform every day. Chemical peels are very popular. This procedure often provides the glow that we see on celebrities as they walk across the red carpet, but chemical peels are not just for the rich and famous! If you want to reduce fine lines under your eyes and mouth, erase age spots, and fade away scars or dark patches, a chemical peel is for you. Most peels use an acid solution to remove the top layer of skin, and they’re ideal for busy people who want a quick treatment over their lunch hour. Chemical peels treat everything from dry skin to acne, and they promote new skin cell growth. Some have dreamy names like “SilkPeel,” which combines microdermabrasion with a deep delivery of skin-specific solutions to treat a wide variety of skin conditions. Other exotic peels include Obagi Blue Radiance, which is a blend of acids for tighter and brighter skin. Expect a tingling sensation during the peel, and don’t forget to wear sunscreen after your treatment. For deeper wrinkles, women often turn to derma fillers. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers like Restylane and Juvederm can lift and contour cheeks, plump lips, and create volume essentially anywhere—think temples, acne scars, hands, and so much more. Hyaluronic acid is a type of sugar found naturally in the body. This filler is often used for marionette lines, smile lines, and nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the tips of the mouth). It hydrates skin from below the surface, triggering your body to produce more collagen. A newer version, Juvederm Voluma, can provide results that last up to 18 months— that’s longer than the expected 6–12 months for most hyaluronic acid fillers. Sculptra, a synthetic poly-L-lactic acid, remains one of the most popular fillers to fill in hollowed cheeks and reduce wrinkles. Sculptra works at an even deeper level and can use the patient’s own fat tissue (reducing the chance of an allergic reaction) in addition to boosting the skin’s own natural production of collagen. This low-
www.womensedition.com
maintenance filler produces long-lasting results—up to two years. To get a smooth look without lumps or nodules, it’s important to have a skilled surgeon perform Sculptra injections. Radiesse (made from synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite in a gel), a filler similar to Juvederm, treats deep lines and furrows, plumps up skin around the nose and mouth, and fills in hollow cheeks and nasolabial folds for a more youthful look. The results from Radiesse tend to last a little longer than what you’d expect from Juvederm. Request a consultation with your medical professional to weigh the pros and cons of each filler for your desired outcome. Injectable fillers have definitely evolved in 2019. They are no longer reserved for wrinkles and under-eye hollows. The more sophisticated fillers and techniques can create natural effects and make small adjustments. Some doctors treat with smaller injections over a longer length of time. The materials injected are less risky and are absorbed by the body over time. You’ve surely heard of Botox for freezing the frown lines between your eyebrows. These days, it is also used for other creative tweaks. For example, a touch of the neurotoxin at the base of the divider between your nostrils can lift the tip of the nose, or a baby dose just beneath the eyes can make them look bigger and more awake. Versatile Botox treats other medical conditions, too, like a drooping brow, eye squinting, even migraine headaches. Botox alternatives like Dysport are less expensive, and results may show up sooner (in 48 hours as opposed to 10–14 days). The “liquid face lift” is so called because it provides some lift to the face with injectables instead of surgical procedures. It typically combines injectable dermal fillers with Botox or Dysport to relax
facial lines and more. This procedure restores facial volume, reduces wrinkles, and brightens and lifts the face with a youthful glow. Women often indulge in the liquid face lift in their 30s and 40s to delay the traditional surgical face lift. Skin isn’t all that’s getting attention at medical spas. Many patients are looking for a flatter tummy and tighter thighs without invasive surgery. Most of the non-invasive body sculpting treatments break down fat cells with cold or heat, and most are FDA-approved. CoolSculpting blasts away fat with a suction vacuum applied directly to treatment areas, freezing fat cells until they crystallize. There are heat treatments, too, like SculpSure, which lasers away fat cells that the body subsequently eliminates. Ultrasound destroys fat using mechanical vibration, and TruSculpt creates an even heat with radiofrequency, targeting fat for a slimmer silhouette. Most hot or cold treatments last about 25 minutes per session and usually require two to four sessions. There’s minimal discomfort and no downtime. Vanquish, the newest radiofrequency therapy to banish fat cells, is similar to truSculpt, targeting love handles, belly bulges, and thighs without harming nearby cells. Some patients describe their experience as similar to a hot stone massage or lying under a warm blanket. If you’re looking to eliminate fat, rejuvenate skin, or oust away acne, seek advice from a medical spa to check out your options. Remember that treatment results vary from patient to patient, so consult with your doctor to find the best option for you. Let yourself shine! Home Security Systems Find the Right System for Your Home
By Robyn V. Powell
Crime statistics over the past few years have led a growing number of Americans to invest in a home security system. A property crime occurs every 3.7 seconds, resulting in millions of dollars in damages and losses. Equipping your home or business with a security system reduces the likelihood of a break-in by 33 percent. Thanks to new wireless technologies and the increasing use of smartphone apps, achieving home security has never been easier or more affordable. Given the unprecedented number of options on the market, one thing is certain—home security is not a one-size-fits-all solution. For today’s consumers, the challenge becomes one of education, of understanding your security goals and identifying the products that will best meet those needs. Security systems have evolved to do much more than keep intruders out of your home. They let you communicate with the kids when they get home from school, monitor your home’s lighting and cooling systems, and even let you know when a package has arrived. Choosing the right equipment package, payment plan, and features for your needs depends on what you want to do with your system. How do you choose? Begin by asking yourself a few questions. What am I protecting? Do I need a nanny cam to keep an eye on the little ones or do I need a sensor to catch a leaky pipe? What is my family’s routine? What is my budget? How big is my home or office? The answers to these questions will guide you to what types of features you want,
along with the best method of installation and what size of system you need. In today’s market, there are essentially three main types of security system packages: home automation, security equipment, and environmental monitoring. Smart tech adjusts to your family’s schedule or preferences with convenient home automation features that allow you to control the system from within your home or remotely through apps on your smartphone. Adjust your home’s thermostat on your drive home from work or let the dog walker in the house while you’re on vacation, all with a simple tap on your phone. If you’re concerned about issues like intrusion, theft, or vandalism, traditional home security devices like alarms, glass break sensors, and outdoor motion detectors are useful. Doorbell cameras add another layer of security and convenience, letting you speak remotely ›››

to anyone at your door. This allows you to greet guests, shoo away solicitors, or talk to the mail carrier. An added bonus—doorbell cameras record anyone who comes to your doorstep, including package thieves! If you live in an older home and worry about home systems that could fail, consider environmental monitoring that can give you peace of mind with features like smoke detectors, leak detectors, and pipe freeze detectors. Until recently, a consumer’s only choice for home security was to hire an alarm company to install a hard-wired system. This method required a network of wires to be run through your home, along with the installation of a keypad near a door. Most traditional alarm companies have moved to wireless options, offering the latest in technologies to consumers who want a complete solution. These companies have expanded to include smart home automation products such as smart locks and app-controlled lighting and thermostats. If working with the experts is important to you, then going with a professionally installed home security system is a great option. You won’t have to lift a finger. Companies will send a trained professional to your home for a consultation. In addition to getting a custom package to meet your specific needs, you can discuss your security priorities, budget, and expectations with a real person who has years of industry experience. If you want to guarantee 24/7 protection of your home, professional alarm monitoring is the best system for you. In the event of a break-in or a fire, the monitoring company will immediately contact you to verify the situation and will dispatch police, firefighters, and an ambulance in an emergency. Unmonitored systems may sound an alarm, but your home will continue to be robbed or burn until you or a neighbor calls for help. Most security companies carry similar products but bundle them differently. To avoid over-equipping your home with unnecessary bells and whistles, keep your security priorities in mind when reviewing the various packages. At the end of the day, the goal of home security is to provide peace of mind. The very best security system for your home is the one that provides the safety and security you want without breaking your budget or being too complicated. Stop and Go and Stop Again Maintaining Your Vehicle’s Brakes
By Brennan Hallock
It’s no secret that your car’s brakes are one of its most important features—they’re what stands between “go” and “stop.” To make sure that your brakes are there when you need them, make sure they get the attention they need, from both you and your mechanic. How long your brakes last depends heavily on how you drive and where you drive, so there is no clear-cut rule for when elements of the braking system will need to be replaced. If you drive aggressively or in a lot of stop-and-go traffic, your brake pads will wear out faster than if most of your driving is on a highway. It’s important to have a mechanic look over your brakes regularly. Generally speaking, you should have your brakes inspected every six months (schedule this for the same time you take the car in to have the tires rotated). Your mechanic will check the thickness of the brake pads and the condition and wear of the calipers or drum hardware. The mechanic can alert you to any problems with your brakes or potential replacements that need to be made. Brakes also have built-in warning signals for when they need attention. When your brake pads wear down to a certain point, you will hear an annoying scraping sound every time you press the brake pedal. This sound comes from built-in wear sensors that scrape against the brake disc, alerting the
driver that the pads need to be replaced. Some newer cars also have electronic sensors that turn on a dashboard warning when the brake pads reach a minimum thickness. This feature is not standard on all cars, so it is best to rely on regular inspections to determine when to change your brake pads. Another indication of brake wear is that your brake pedal will, over time, get closer to the floor of the vehicle. This is a clear indicator that your brake pads need to be replaced, but the process is often so gradual that you don’t even notice it. If your brake pedal feels “spongy” when you press it, or if it goes to the floor suddenly, your brake fluid may be leaking. Your mechanic will need to repair leaks in the braking system right away. If you know how to top off the brake fluid (under the hood), you should do so before you head out to the mechanic. If you don’t know how, it’s safest to have the car towed and

have your mechanic show you how to top off the fluid, in case you ever need to do so again. Brake pads can last anywhere from 25,000 to 70,000 miles, depending on factors such as your style of driving, where you are driving, the type of brake pad, and the environment in which you are driving. Brake rotors are the disks that the brake calipers clamp down on to stop your tires. They are typically made of cast iron or ceramic, and they should be replaced approximately every 70,000 miles. There are some things you can do to extend the life of your brakes as well as make your driving experience smoother and safer. First of all, don’t speed. Stopping quickly from a high rate of speed is one of the top causes of premature brake pad wear. Your brakes are turning energy into heat—the more energy they have to transform, the more wear is caused. As your driver’s ed teacher always said, do not “two foot” your pedals. Tapping on the brake pedal while you still have your foot on the gas won’t do anything to stop you and will
wear out your brake pads much sooner than necessary. To reduce wear on the brake pads, coast as much as possible. Pay attention to the drivers in front of you so that you can take your foot off the gas and coast to a stop instead of pressing hard on the brake. This is especially true in crowded stopand-go driving, which causes the most wear on your brakes. Also, don’t hurry up to stop. If you see a red light or stop sign coming up, there’s no point in pressing harder on the gas only to slow back down—simply coast to a stop. As an added bonus, this also saves gas. Keep your car as light as possible (the lighter the vehicle, the less work it takes to slow it down). Lastly, have your mechanic flush your brake fluid every two years to ensure that it is free of built-up water or contaminants. It feels like we’re all on the go all the time, but the truth is that we sometimes need to stop. With a little attention, your brakes will be ready to stop you when you need it most. Reclaim Yourself From Cancer Beauty Ideas During and After Treatment
By Loretta McCollum
There’s no denying that breast cancer can be a devasting disease, both physically and emotionally. It can rob a woman of the physical aspects that she believes define her femininity. A woman grieves those losses and wonders if she will ever feel like a “real woman” again. We all know that beauty comes from within, but it can be hard to stay positive about treatment when you barely recognize yourself in the mirror. Thankfully, there are many avenues available to help women rediscover themselves during and after cancer treatment. Reconstructive surgery, permanent makeup, tattoos, wigs, hats, and scarves are just a few of the ways a woman can reclaim her femininity and self-esteem. Hair loss is one of the most obvious side effects of cancer treatment. There is some good news in that arena: Those lovely locks may well grow back! In the meantime, consider a wig. Wigs are more comfortable and natural-looking than ever before, and they are available in a variety of materials and styles. Many insurance companies will cover part, if not all, of the cost. An early visit to a stylist is a good idea. A stylist who has worked with your natural hair can get a good color and texture match. Synthetic wigs come in a multitude of colors and styles. They are affordable, low-maintenance, and look and feel like natural hair. Color selection is basically unlimited, including non-traditional colors. A monofilament wig looks very natural. this type of wig is hand-sewn into a monofilament mesh, making it easy to part and style. Wigs made from human hair, although more costly, allow you to closely match the color and texture of your natural hair and provide more styling versatility. Consult with a stylist to determine the best choice for you. Many salons offer complimentary consultations, allowing you to “test drive” several options. Some also participate in the American Cancer Society program where they will fit you with a hairpiece and style it to your specifications. They can also suggest styling products, discuss possible scalp issues and how to treat them, and provide instructions on caring for your wig. Hats, scarves, and turbans are wig alternatives with limitless possibilities. They’re extremely versatile and affordable. Some hats even come with built-in bangs or sewn-in hairpieces. Turbans keep your head warm, and style choices abound. They can be easily

accessorized with a favorite pin or brooch. A scarf can be used as a full or partial head covering, and owning multiple scarves allows you to coordinate with different outfits. A stylist can work with you on options. It’s not uncommon to lose eyebrows or eyelashes during cancer treatment. Permanent makeup and tattooing can recreate those shapely brows and lush lashes. You can even get permanent eyeliner for a polished look, day or night. From the perspective of the person undergoing the procedure, permanent makeup application is much like tattooing. An anesthetic cream is applied to the skin, and then a needle inserts pigment into the dermis. This technique allows for a wide tint variation. A professional tattoo artist or permanent makeup artist can advise clients on color and shape choices. Another form of post-treatment tattooing concerns surgical scars. Some patients choose an artistic approach, turning their surgical scars into whimsical works of art through beautiful tattooing. Women who have had a mastectomy often feel like the very essence of their womanhood was taken along with their breast or breasts. Thankfully, there are multiple options to help alleviate this loss. Removable breast forms that include areola and nipple detail can be used with regular bras. Most are made of silicone and appear quite natural. Many women opt for breast reconstructive surgery, using saline or silicone implants or tissue transplanted from another part of the body. Three-dimensional nipple reconstruction and areola tattoos can complete the reconstruction process for a natural look. In cases of a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy, reconstructive surgery to maintain symmetry can sometimes be combined with the cancer surgery treatment. This combined procedure is known as oncoplastic surgery and can be a relief to patients who don’t want to undergo additional surgery after cancer treatment. Some patients prefer to opt out of reconstructive surgery altogether after a mastectomy or double mastectomy. This is sometimes known as “living flat.” If this feels right to you, go for it! Women who have survived or are currently battling this disease are prime examples of toughness, strength, and beauty. Know that there are many professionals out there dedicated to helping you feel like yourself while you’re kicking cancer to the curb. Healthy Living
Colorado Springs Hypnosis Happiness and Health through Hypnosis By Stacie S. Gonzalez
If you could improve your health naturally, would you? What if deep relaxation is what it takes to quit an unhealthy habit or conquer a negative mindset? You, too, can give up smoking, lose weight, improve a skill, or change the way you look at things. Certified hypnotists help people do this every day. Charles Buckingham and Brisa Chacon have been practicing hypnosis since 2015. They are certified hypnotists and proprietors of Colorado Springs Hypnosis, Ltd. They are skilled in hypnotic induction, a relaxation modality used to guide people toward making healthy changes. “Everybody has things in their life they’d like to change,” says Charles. “Sometimes, that change can be difficult.” Charles and Brisa met in the United States Army. Charles, who retired after 20 years, began his military career in recruiting and later moved to intelligence. It was there that he discovered neuro-linguistic programming. He liked the idea that people could be empowered to change the way they think, view past events, and approach life, so he studied the subject. Along the way, he learned how to use hypnosis to quit smoking; now, he’s an advocate for the alternative therapy. Brisa, an eight-year veteran, admits that she was nervous about hypnosis at first. She had watched TV programs that portrayed hypnosis as mind control. A personal experience taught her this was a myth. When Brisa left the military, she struggled to transition back to civilian life. She found it difficult to relate to people; she grew anxious. With Charles’ encouragement, Brisa tried hypnosis. She recalls thinking, “Wow, this is amazing! What more can it do? More people need to know about this!” She found relief from her anxiety and now finds happiness helping others overcome similar hurdles. How does hypnosis work? Hypnosis does nothing to you; rather, you play an active role in helping yourself by allowing a trained hypnotist to guide you into a relaxed state (also called a hypnotic trance). You may have experienced a trance before, if you’ve tried meditation or have found yourself deeply engrossed in a book, a movie, or a long drive. While you are in a trance, you shift up and down in varying levels of depth. In this state, you are laser-focused, your imagination is vivid, and your learning and problem-solving skills are enhanced. “All hypnosis is self-hypnosis,” says Charles. “We guide people into trance states, and then we use different techniques—guided visualization, direct suggestions—to help them change.” Brisa agrees. “If we try to tell you what to do, your subconscious mind will reject it. Clients have to want to change!” Hypnosis doesn’t have side effects other than a
28
feeling of relaxation. It’s often less expensive and offers faster results than other techniques. Studies show that hypnosis is one of the most effective tools for weight loss and smoking cessation because it doesn’t just change the habit—it changes the belief about the habit. Colorado Springs Hypnosis smoking cessation client Claudette says, “If it can work for me…it can work for anyone! I’m so proud of myself. Smoke-free—finally! Never thought I would be able to say that!” Many people don’t consider hypnosis until they’ve tried everything else without success, but that doesn’t have to be the case. “We don’t have to be the last resort,” Charles points out, “but we normally are.” Hypnosis complements a doctor’s office therapies, and even one hour of treatment can offer relief. “We can teach someone new tools, new ways to go out into life with new resources—in just one session,” says Charles. As with any specialist, check credentials before working with a hypontherapist. Look for certifications from places like the International Certification Board of Clinical Hypnotherapy or the North American Academy of Hypnosis. Different hypnotists also have different specialties, so be sure to find one who can help you with the things you’d like to change. At your initial visit, you’ll receive a mandatory disclosure statement and information on hypnosis. Charles and Brisa are also registered psychotherapists, which means they are subject to strict rules governing client confidentiality, information sharing, and the therapist-client relationship. Charles is also a certified smoking cessation specialist. He treats smoking, dipping, chewing, and vaping, and his success rate is a whopping 95 percent! Brisa specializes in weight management hypnosis. Other areas of care provided at Colorado Springs Hypnosis include stress and anxiety, pain, skill improvement, phobia release, and trauma. Tick, Tock The Value of Time “Top 15 Things Money Can’t Buy: Time. Happiness. Inner Peace. Integrity. Love. Character. Manners. Health. Respect. Morals. Trust. Patience. Class. Common sense. Dignity.” —Roy T. Bennett, “The Light in the Heart” As I look around me, I begin to notice that money seems to have become the new “religion” for a lot of people. It seems like everyone is in competition to make more, to have more, to one-up the neighbors. Hmm. Why? As the quote by Mr. Bennett points out, money doesn’t have the ability to buy us the things that really matter in our lives. Out of all of the things that Mr. Bennett lists, the numberone thing that brought his message home for me was Time. Without time, there is no way that we can develop the rest of the list. It takes time to be able to relax and be Happy. If we are running around like chickens with our heads cut off, there is very little Inner Peace. If we have time, we are able to step outside of ourselves and make decisions that uphold our Integrity. Without time, we cannot Love and we are not able to nurture and build our relationships into ones that are healthy and sustainable. Without time, we cannot reflect at the end of the day on the decisions that we have made and on whether we

maintained the Character of the person that we want to be. Time…without time, we rush, we are rude, our Manners go out the window. Our Health suffers if we do not have the time to eat right, exercise, and reduce our stress level. Time encourages us to slow down, move deliberately, and treat everyone with Respect. (This often means they will reciprocate by treating us with respect.) Time allows us to create and follow the Moral Code that we want to live by. If we have the time, we can build Trust in our relationships and have Patience instead of blowing people off. It takes time to develop and learn how to use our Common Sense. (How many adolescents do you know who haven’t had the time to develop this sorely needed trait?) Last but not least: Dignity. We need time to allow ourselves to find our own paths, ones that will allow us to present ourselves with Dignity and with Class. If we find ourselves without enough time? Let’s listen to what Mr. Stephen Covey has to say about it! “Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important.” —Stephen Covey Amen!

Alone? Lonely? Lonesome? What’s the Difference? The Girlz met again recently for coffee, conversation, and companionship. As the makeup of the group changes, so does the conversation. This time, we talked about being alone and the need for friends—or at least other people. Em recently retired. Her husband is gone a lot, and now she’s ruing her retirement. “I didn’t realize how much my coworkers meant to me—how much we shared,” she laments. “Now, I’m alone most of the time.” Janie, whose husband died a few months ago, describes a lot of time not taken up by her other activities. “It’s really the most difficult in the evenings,” she relates. “It’s lonely not having an adult to chat with about my day or the news or something on television. The kids and the dog just don’t cut it.” Barbara comments on how her life has changed since her divorce. “With the kids away, I find myself alone a lot. Most of my friends are part of a couple or have kids and grandkids to do things with. It’s lonesome being just me. Even when I attend the theater, take in a concert, or go to a social event and am around other people, it’s lonely.” Geri says she likes being alone. “I’m around people a lot. I treasure my alone time when I can work on a project, read, watch television, or whatever, without being interrupted. Even if it’s just for a short while, it’s time for ME.” Tanya, who is taking extended credit classes for her job,

comments that her high schooler comes home and heads straight for his bedroom. “I suggested we do our homework together, or at least in the same part of the house, and was reminded that he prefers the solitude of his room. He says school is noisy, even in study hall or the library. It’s quiet in his room, with no interruptions or distractions… unless he wants them there.” Meri helps at a local day care. “It’s amazing how kids will play in the same area, right next to each other but not necessarily with each other,” she comments. “They may be sharing blocks, or coloring pages, or dressing up, and still not intermingle or combine their activities. They’re alone but not alone…it’s like they play in parallel worlds.” I’ve seen adults do the same thing. Maggie does a lot of driving. “I like that time alone. I let my mind wander. I may spend time remembering the past or planning for the future. It’s time to think about stuff in general.” We came to the conclusion that people (and kids are people, too) need friends—real people friends, not just social media friends. Ours is a social society. We share memories, laughter, and tears and give hugs when they’re needed. We allow others time to themselves. We may want to be alone sometimes, but never lonely or lonesome. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Focus on Finance
Win, Win Encouraging Employee Engagement By George Morgan
The conventional wisdom is that when companies want to improve profitability, they begin by cutting back on wages. While this may have an element of truth, the only beneficiary of this outcome is the employer, and, in the long run, it may end up actually costing the employer. For over 30 years, the Gallup organization has studied an alternative to this approach. It has spent significant amounts of time, energy, and money studying the impact that engaged employees have on the profitability of a company. An “engaged employee” is enthusiastic about his or her job and so takes positive action to further the company’s reputation and interests. Over the years, Gallup has gathered significant data that documents the difference in profitability that engaged employees have as opposed to those who are either unengaged or actively disengaged. Engaged employees tend to be healthier than their non-engaged coworkers and thus reduce the amount of sick leave taken. Engaged employees stay with their companies longer and thus reduce the costs and effort needed to replace them. Furthermore, engaged employees create greater customer loyalty. Unengaged and actively disengaged employees are not only less productive than their engaged counterparts, but they also are more likely to steal from the company, negatively influence their coworkers, miss workdays, and drive otherwise loyal customers away. Gallup estimates that unengaged and actively disengaged employees cost the U.S. economy $500 billion annually. The historical data show that, for the past three decades, employee engagement has hovered around 22 percent of the U.S. labor force. Put another way, 78 percent of the American labor force is either unengaged or actively disengaged. Reducing this number could dramatically alter the profitability of individual companies and have a significant impact on our national GDP. There are many ways that companies can go about increasing the percentage of their labor force that is actively engaged in their work. A potential starting point for increasing employee engagement is to make sure that the company’s 401(k) is operating effectively. An efficient 401(k) is one that, from a cost and operation perspective, is working well. An effective 401(k) is one where the employees are excited about the program, give credit to the company for providing it to them, and, thus, become engaged. To begin transforming an ineffective 401(k) into an effective one, the company should examine the ease of participation and the way it conveys information about the program to the workforce. Next, a two-pronged educational program needs to be implemented. The first component of this education unit should be aimed at increasing employee participation. Nationally, only 71 percent of all eligible employees participate in their 401(k) program, and the majority of these are at the minimum level. Part of this educational
34
effort needs to focus on the employer match portion of the program and inform employees on the cost of turning it down. Employers may say that the broker or the mutual fund that has the investment component of the 401(k) plan occasionally comes out and talks to employees about the program. While this may be true, a recent study by the Securities and Exchange Commission pointed out that there are a lot of resources in the community that can provide more in-depth and objective education. The 401(k) program requires that the individual participant must make his or her own investment decisions, but the majority of these participants have no experience or education in this area. As a result, many participants become overwhelmed, and they end up making decisions by default. Both employers and employees must understand that the investment side of the 401(k) program results in a situation where the process lends itself to a simple investment solution. The vast majority of 401(k) plans restrict the investment choices to mutual funds. The expenses associated with actively managed funds are paid by the owners, which reduces the investment return and, over the course of several decades, can end up costing participants tens of thousands of dollars. Alternatively, passive index funds have minimal expenses and have outperformed their expensive cousins in the long run. Educating and mentoring participants in the use of these funds has the potential to increase investment performance and reduce stress. When participants feel comfortable with and are, therefore, successful with the investment solution, plan participation increases in terms of both people and dollars. Bottom line: Where workers are engaged, everybody wins. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing. WE

Breast Cancer Awareness Month A Time to Learn and Grow
By Leslie Byrne
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it is a time for friends and families to support the people in their lives who are facing breast cancer. It’s a time to celebrate the fact that a breast cancer diagnosis today— though still frightening—is often not as dire as it used to be. Breast cancer deaths have been decreasing for decades. About 30 percent of newly diagnosed cancers in women will be breast cancer. It’s the second most common cause of death from cancer in women in the United States (after lung cancer). Though it is more common in women, men can also develop breast cancer. Why have Breast Cancer Awareness Month? The increased awareness of this disease every October has opened up a public conversation about breast cancer, which continues to drive research and improve survival rates. Advancements in detection and treatment have greatly increased survival rates. The average five-year survival rate with invasive breast cancer is 90 percent. When cancer is only in one breast, the five-year survival rate jumps to 99 percent. Early detection is the best line of defense against breast cancer. The top methods for early detection include physical examinations and imaging tests. Self-exams of the breasts are still recommended. Any lumps or changes should be checked out by a doctor. A breast exam should also be part of every woman’s annual physical. Mammography has been a mainstay of cancer diagnostics for many years. In traditional mammography, films from a low-dose
x-ray are reviewed for abnormalities. With digital mammography, the images are viewed on a computer or printed on a special film. Advantages of digital mammography include faster results, fewer exposures, and less discomfort for the patient. 3-D mammography helps doctors better distinguish masses or tissues that might be cancerous. Unlike traditional mammography, where the details of the breast are viewed in one flat image, 3-D mammography shows the breast in a series of layers, allowing the radiologist to more accurately interpret the images. 3-D mammography significantly reduces false positives and more accurately detects breast cancers early. Other imaging tests for breast cancer detection may include thermography, which senses the temperature changes caused by tumors, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Tissue sampling may also be required. Once breast cancer has been confirmed, women face several treatment options. Surgical options include lumpectomy (just the tumor is removed) and mastectomy (all of the breast tissue is removed). If can-

cer is found in the lymph nodes, they may also be removed. Most women with cancer in one breast will not develop cancer in the other breast, but some women are at an increased risk because of a genetic predisposition or strong family history. These women may opt to have both breasts removed if cancer is found in one of the breasts. Chemotherapy is often a part of breast cancer treatment, and research continues to improve its effectiveness. Hormone therapy slows down or stops the growth of hormone-sensitive tumors, and new options are being investigated. The healing process doesn’t end with the removal of the tumor—most women go on to have reconstructive surgery. For earlystage breast cancers, lumpectomy (also called breast-conserving surgery) may be an option. Though this saves healthy tissue, it can result in significant asymmetry. To address this, many doctors perform oncoplastic surgery. This procedure combines the cancer surgery with the reconstructive surgery into a single surgical event. Reconstruction generally consists of implant reconstruction and autologous or “flap” reconstruction. The flap technique uses tissue from another part of the patient’s body and may also include an implant. Implants are filled with saline or a silicone gel. While most women choose to have some type of reconstruction, others do not have additional reconstructive surgery. This decision is often called “going flat” or “living flat.” A 2014 study found that about 44 percent of women who had surgery to remove a tumor did not have reconstruction. After surgery, physical therapy is recommended. PT helps ameliorate pain, improves range of motion, and builds strength. It can also treat lymphedema (the swelling that can ensue after lymph nodes are removed or damaged). A support group can help patients and loved ones handle the stresses of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. It helps to talk about your concerns with someone who shares them and to ask questions of someone who has been through similar experiences. Support groups can be one-onone or small groups of people. More and more women are surviving and thriving after a breast cancer diagnosis. Participating in local Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities supports patients and survivors, whether or not you’re one of them. The more aware we are of the battle, the more ways we’ll find to help win it! Sources for this article included: breastcancer.org, ww5.komen.org, and cancer.org. WE October 2019

Fireplaces Everywhere Add Warmth and Elegance to Your Home
By Anne Yankus
Now that there’s a chill in the air, it’s a great time to think about ways to keep your home warm. Sure, you probably already have central heating, but what about adding a fireplace? Whether you have an existing hearth in your home or want to build new, a modern fireplace can be a great way to keep your house warm with a little flair! There are many different types of fireplaces on the market today, including traditional, enclosed, directvented or ventless built-in, and wall-mounted. You can also have an existing fireplace converted into a different style. When people think of having a fireplace in their home, a traditional open hearth fireplace is usually what comes to mind. These types of fireplaces are usually wood-burning and made of brick or stone. They have the benefit of excellent localized heat and the authentic smell and sound of burning wood. However, traditional fireplaces tend to fall short when it comes to heating large open spaces, and they can be quite expensive to install if you don’t have an existing chimney and hearth. Enclosed fireplaces, on the other hand, feature a large glass panel that traps the heat inside your house more effectively (by allowing less to escape up the chimney) than a traditional open hearth. Enclosed fireplaces, like traditional, are also wood-burning. One thing to keep in mind about any wood-burning fireplace
model is cleaning. Unlike gas, ethanol, or electric heat sources, burning wood creates natural deposits in the chimney and hearth that will require regular cleaning. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that all chimneys, fireplaces, and vents should be cleaned and checked for blockages once per year. Even with a gas fireplace, you’re not off the hook for cleaning. You should have the vents checked and cleaned regularly, especially if you use them infrequently, in case animals have decided to nest in your chimney. Your annual cleaning is also a great time for a chimney professional to identify any other underlying problems that may need repair or more in-depth cleaning. Next up is a direct-vented, built-in, gas-burning fireplace. Direct-vented models can be constructed new or installed in existing chimneys. For a cheaper and less-invasive alternative, you can have a pipe installed. The benefits of a pipe chimney over a traditional

brick chimney is that it can be installed in any room of your house and doesn’t require as much change to your house’s existing structure. Direct-vented fireplaces have a traditional yellow flame, in keeping with the wood-burning aesthetic. Ventless fireplaces, on the other hand, have blue flames. Because of their cleaner-burning flames, ventless fireplaces don’t require any sort of chimney—this makes them one of the easiest types of fireplaces to install. On the downside, the lack of a chimney does raise a slight chance that some contaminants may enter your home. If you like the convenience of a gas fireplace but the aesthetic of a traditional wood-burning hearth, you can get a log set to install in your gas fireplace. This is basically a ceramic log (or stack of logs) that has the gas element installed within it, giving it that old-fashioned wood fire look. For an ultra-modern look, go with a tempered glass bed. You’ve probably seen tempered glass fireplaces at restaurants—it looks like a bed of colorful glass shards is on fire. Tempered glass shards run as low as $4 per pound and come in a variety of colors. Ethanol-burning fireplaces are the latest trend in the industry and have been gaining popularity due to their easy installation and contemporary designs. Wall-mounted fireplaces have both of those features, as well as the benefit of being able to function both as a room heater and as a work of art! As the name implies, wall-mounted fireplaces can be hung on the wall anywhere in your home. Last, but not least, fireplace conversions are a great way to spruce up an older fireplace that burns wood or gas and replace it with a more modern ethanolburning unit. With conversions, you can purchase an ethanol-burning insert to keep the current aesthetic of your existing fireplace or update the look a bit with a more contemporary-looking surround. Installing an ethanol-burning insert may not generate as much heat as a gas- or wood-burning fireplace, but they are more environmentally friendly. Whether you’re remodeling an older fireplace or starting from scratch, there are numerous options to choose from. Talk through the pros and cons of each type with a fireplace expert who can help you pick the fireplace that’s best for you and your home! Positive Perspective
Life is Great I’m Back Home “I’ve got nothing to do today but smile.” —Simon and Garfunkel Are you happy? Do you wake up with a smile on your face each morning? Do you wake up feeling light, airy, and energetic…or do you drag yourself out of bed to face another day? I admit, I’ve experienced both ends of that spectrum throughout my life. Right now, I’m pretty darned happy. Do I have a lot on my plate each day? Of course I do—we all do—but, every day, I find myself grinning with the anticipation of how much fun I get to have that day. “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” —Mahatma Gandhi For the first time in a long time, I am back doing what I love. I am at Women’s Edition full time. I am meeting with small businesses to help them reach you, our readers. It is SO gratifying! I wake up each day raring to go. I go to sleep tired, but it’s a good tired, because I know that I have made a difference in people’s lives. Small businesses need all the help that they can get, even more so now than when Women’s Edition started 33 years ago. I started Women’s Edition way “back in the day,” when I was 30 years old. This issue, October of 2019, is our 400th issue. Wow.

“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” —Albert Schweitzer I feel as if my life has come full circle. I am doing what I love again. I can totally relate to the small business owners I’m meeting with. It takes a lot of courage to start your own business. “Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation.” —Brian Tracy The other day, I had the pleasure of meeting one of our new advertisers. This gentleman is on his third career. He looked happy. There was a twinkle in his eye that you couldn’t miss. Erin, my Art and Editorial Director, made it a point to introduce him to me when he stopped by our office. Thank you, Erin! That brief meeting reminded me that we all still have it in us. I would encourage any of you who have thought about “doing your own thing” to take the plunge. It truly doesn’t get any better than this! “If you want to be happy, be.” —Leo Tolstoy
A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers: “Thank you Women’s Edition for your very high quality, very local magazine! We love the format and the articles! It’s a great way to stay in tune with the heartbeat of the city.
We LOVE advertising with you because our clients love what you do! We are thankful for the exposure we get about the services and products we offer! We look forward to many more ads in Women’s Edition.”
