Peace On Earth Happy holidays to each and every one of you! My question is…are you ready? I had a conversation with a very nice lady today who shared with me that she is pretty much a Scrooge when it comes to Christmas. I have to admit, I commiserated with her! We discussed the trials and tribulations of putting up and taking down decorations (even though, while I write this, it’s not even Thanksgiving!). We reviewed the challenge of piling more “stuff” onto our already incredibly demanding schedules. When I sat down to write this column, I began to reflect. I realized that I was complaining about the commercialization of Christmas, and that I was ignoring what Christmas is all about: “Peace on Earth, and goodwill towards men.” (The word “men” is used generically to mean “all people” or “human beings.”) It’s not about the lights, the gifts, the food, the commercialization. It’s about PEACE ON EARTH, GOODWILL TOWARDS MEN. Amen. I know with every ounce of my being how important it is to put out there whatever it is that we want the Universe to deliver to us. I am sorry to admit that I’ve taken my eye off the ball when it comes to looking at what it is that I want. I have fallen into the trap of looking at the reality of “what is.” Last month, in this column, I made a commitment to launch a new habit…that of gratitude. Guess what? It’s beginning to take hold. Now, that’s not to say that I have perfected a new take on life, but the decision to be grateful has given me a different perspective on how much I am grateful for. How much I have to be appreciative of. Hey… by the “inch,” it’s a “cinch.” So, this year, I’m going to match up to those experiences of Christmas that bring a smile to my face. I am going to look for those signs that make me feel good. I am going to enjoy this holiday season more than I have in many, many years. Now, that does not mean I am going to decorate and go crazy. No. I am going to watch the children…particularly my two beautiful granddaughters…and see if I can get back to what Christmas is all about. PEACE ON EARTH, GOODWILL TOWARDS MEN. I don’t know about you, but that feels pretty darn good! Happy holidays. 2018 is going to be a fabulous year! Thank you all for continuing to pick up this magazine every month. Love you all.

The Plush Side of Dressing Welcome to the Cozy Season! By Holly Bell
When the weather turns colder, it’s our cue to snuggle up against the elements. We like to bring out the scented candles along with fuzzy blankets and light the fireplace. Women want to be stylish, as always, but also warm and comfortable during this kind of weather. Lucky for us, plush fabrics are the hot trend this cold season! Velvets were a hit on this season’s runways, featuring so many intriguing textures and designs, from sheer, burnout velvets featuring floral designs to velvet with embroideries so beautiful to behold! Even the rich, smooth velvets with a slight shimmer are tempting to have in your closet. Velvets have a little stretch to them and are wonderfully soft next to your skin—just what we want when the wind starts to howl! Layering to keep warm is not new, but this year, layers are a little more inventive and numerous than usual. Think of wearing tailored pants under a dress, with a vest and jacket over that. Embrace it! Don’t be afraid to mix fabrics and lengths. A cool look I admired was a tailored blouse worn under one of this summer’s hot off-the-shoulder looks. This could also be done with the cold shoulder shirts of the past season. Layer a shirt under them to add warmth and turn this trend into a cozy look for winter. Soft sweaters are always on point for winter. Chunky turtlenecks and cowl necks are always in our closets, but long cardigans and tunics will be vying for our attention this winter, along with vests to play with more layering. Even outerwear has embraced the softer side this year. The puffer vest and coat will still be popular, especially since they are lightweight but still quite warm. A fun alternative is a faux fur vest or a fuzzy sweater vest with a hood. Sweater “coats” are often an outer layer alternative, as they are comfy and cozy but also look great. Another blast from the past in fabric choices this year is suede…and faux suede. Remember how much we loved it in the ’70s? Now is the time to love it again. Fabrics brushed to look and feel like suede (but at a fraction of the cost) are everywhere this fall. I love the soft feel and the ease of these fabrics. Enjoy this renaissance in suede pants, jackets, coats, even blouses and dresses. It is a beautiful addition and goes right along with our love of the ’70s fabric trends. Leather is an ever-popular look that’s great for blustery weather. Leather has blossomed far beyond the moto jacket. Leather and faux leather will be found at all price points and in a wide variety of styles. Leather dresses are particularly hot, along with leather styles that add the current trends of waterfall ruffles or trumpet sleeves. When we think of soft and warm, we naturally think of fur. Again, the faux materials can really fool you. Designers are using it rather creatively this year. Tufts of fur are appearing everywhere— on the hoods and hems of jackets, on lapels or collars, on sleeves and cuffs, even on shoes and boots! Real and faux fur varieties are perfect for trimming a winter scarf and gloves. Head coverings consisting of fur could not get more stylish or warm. The best part of all the fur and faux fur is the crazy collection of colors. From

natural looks to candy pinks and royal blues, the colorful fur trend is fun and brings a welcome contrast to the bare trees and white snow of winter. Nearly every designer was showing longer hemlines for the fall and winter. Practical and cozy, these longer hemlines elongate the body and are a perfect foil for the tall boots you’re probably wearing. You can be warm and still wear a feminine skirt in winter when the lengths are lowered. Plus, the look is so professional. This year, professional looks will also embrace pantsuits! Pantsuits this season are hip, not stodgy. Think of a pinstripe suit with chunky boots and a sweater under the jacket. The power suit is on again, in fabulous colors such as bright red or fun patterns such as allover stars. A modern approach to the pantsuit is to style it with artistic accessories. A funky scarf or necklace and trendy handbag can really set off the look. This winter, embrace the warm, the fuzzy, the soft, and the comfortable! Just imagine yourself enjoying all the good cookie and pumpkin smells, along with the warmth and cheer of the upcoming holidays. Welcome to the cozy season! Let’s look great while we stay warm. Place 10–15 cloves of garlic in the pan, along with one-fourth cup of water, and insert a good meat thermometer. Roast at 500 degrees for 20 minutes. until doubled in size. Bake at 350 degrees for 35–40 minutes. Cool for 1–2 minutes, then invert onto a serving platter. Christmas Fruit Salad (You can substitute any canned fruits you like.) Whip 1 cup of heavy whipping cream until soft peaks form. Refrigerate for later. Drain a 20-ounce can of pineapple chunks, reserving 2 Tablespoons of the juice. In a saucepan, combine the pineapple juice, 3 egg yolks, 2 Tablespoons of sugar, 2 Tablespoons of vinegar, and 1 Tablespoon of butter. Cook over low heat for 5 minutes, stirring often, until the mixture thickens into a custard. Cool. In a large bowl, combine the pineapple chunks, a can of drained sweet cherries (not pie filling), a large can of drained mandarin oranges, and 2 cups of mini marshmallows. Pour the custard over the fruits, fold the whipped cream into the mixture, and mix well. Cover and chill overnight. Spiced Bacon Place 12–16 pieces of bacon on a rack on a sheet pan. Brush each piece of bacon with real maple syrup (not pancake syrup). Mix together one-fourth cup of brown sugar, one-half teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and one-half teaspoon of black pepper. Sprinkle the mixture on each strip of bacon. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes. Hot Chicken Salad (You can make this ahead of time and freeze.) Mix together the following: 2 cups of cooked chicken or turkey, 1 cup of diced celery, one-fourth of a diced onion, one-half cup of sliced almonds, one and one-half cups of cooked rice, 1 can of

cream of chicken soup, one-half can of chopped water chestnuts, 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste, 3 chopped hard-cooked eggs, and 2 cups of crushed potato chips. Pour the mixture into a greased casserole dish. Top with a few sprinkles of crushed potato chips. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Toffee Squares Line a jelly-roll size pan with aluminum foil. Lay out about 35 saltine crackers in the pan (salted side up). In a saucepan, melt 2 sticks of butter. Add 1 cup of light brown sugar, stir, and boil for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in one-half teaspoon of almond extract. Pour this mixture over the saltines. Bake at 400 degrees for 5 minutes. Remove from oven. Sprinkle a 12-ounce package of semisweet (dark or milk) chocolates on top and spread out evenly. Cool, then transfer to wax paper. Break into pieces when fully cooled. Peppermint Brownies For the brownies (you can use a mix, but this goes together quickly): Beat together 2 eggs, one-half cup of soft butter, and 1 cup of sugar for 2 minutes. Add 2 ounces of melted and cooled unsweetened chocolate, then blend. Add one-half cup of flour, then blend lightly. Pour into a greased 9x9-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30–35 minutes. Cool. For the frosting: Mix 2 Tablespoons of soft butter, 1 Tablespoon of milk, 1 cup of sifted powdered sugar, 2–3 drops of green food coloring, and 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract. Chill for 30 minutes. Spread frosting over cooled brownies. For the glaze: Melt 1 square of unsweetened chocolate and mix in 1 Tablespoon of butter. Spread the glaze over chilled, frosted brownies. Cut and serve. WE

Brownell Talbot School Meet Assistant Head of Academics Jason Smith By Jackie Byers
In June of 2017, Jason Smith reported to 400 North Happy Hollow Boulevard to assume the duties of Assistant Head of Academics at Brownell Talbot School. For this world traveler, the educational environment at BT fits right in with his educational philosophy—that the best kind of education serves the whole child, addressing academics, the arts, athletics, and social and emotional skills. Jason’s education began in the Pacific Northwest, where he grew up. Earning his teaching credentials brought him to the Midwest. At Luther College, he earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, with a math endorsement. Then, at Seattle Pacific University, he earned a master’s degree in educational leadership. Next, Jason earned superintendent credentials from Western Washington University. In 2013, he was named an Emerging Leader by ASCD, an educational leadership organization founded in 1943. He and his family (wife, Jeanne; son, Kailer; and daughter, Gracie) have lived in some exotic spots. After serving in a school in Doha, Qatar, he became Deputy Head of School at GEMS World Academy in Dubai. Jason compares Brownell Talbot favorably to that school. “Both are pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Both have a strong family atmosphere, and both place a high priority on educating the whole child. Learning to live well in a complex world is not just about academics.” “Of course, academic excellence is a tradition at BT,” Jason continues. “I value the fact that Brownell Talbot is firmly rooted in tradition and, at the same time, totally open to innovation. Students have opportunities to explore the interests they have and develop new ones.” Jason had been offered a Head of School position at a school in Madrid, Spain. “It was an appealing offer,” he admits. “My placement firm contacted me about the position here, so I decided to check it out before I made a final decision. From the moment I stepped on campus, BT felt right. As I visited with Head of School Dr. Gibbs, I understood that the values system here was exactly what I was looking for. I also could tell that my family would be happy as a part of the family that is BT.” Jason appreciates the excellence and devotion of Brownell Talbot’s teachers. “Because BT is a small school, the faculty here know their students well. Knowing when and when not to push, and making sure not to push too hard, are keys to success. At the same time, it is essential to encourage students to take safe risks to try new things and to nudge students in multiple directions of interest.” “Education must appeal to all aspects of the student,” Jason continues. “Schools must provide students
12

opportunities to explore their identified passions as well as those that are yet undiscovered. For Jason Smith with his example, a student who enjoys acting may have the wife, Jeanne, and opportunity to also participate in set design, which could children, Gracie lead to a love for the visual arts. A student who enjoys and Kailer playing football may learn about the dynamics of spiral and windspeed, leading to a love for all things physics. As an independent school, we are able to stay on the cutting edge in terms of educational practice while being true to who we are. We are committed to being attuned to all facets of the child, in the arts, in athletics, in academics, in social and emotional aspects.” Students at Brownell Talbot are also encouraged to take active roles in their community through service learning. It’s never too early for students to learn the value of helping others. “We have a strong service learning program that rewards students who make such contributions. Students here have opportunities to succeed in so many areas.” Many of these opportunities are ones that the students choose themselves. “One of the aspects of BT that appeals to me is the age range. As I get to know the students here, I visit classrooms from pre-kindergarten to senior advanced placement. Just days ago, on my rounds, I visited a first-grade class. With the teacher’s consent, I taught a 25-minute reading lesson. That was really fun.” Jason’s dedication to Brownell Talbot has not gone unnoticed by the rest of the administration. “Jason is a great fit here at BT,” notes the Dean of Students Bill Harrell. “He comes with awesome credentials and lives up to them every day. He has developed strong relationships with faculty and students. That he also has a great sense of humor is a real plus. Humor is an important trait for a successful leader.” If you would like to meet Jason and see education for the whole child at work, you can visit Brownell Talbot at 400 North Happy Hollow Boulevard, in Omaha. Call 402556-3772 to arrange a tour for yourself or for your whole family. For more information, check out the school online at www.brownell.edu. WE

A Woman’s Work
A Little Extra Work at Christmas Oh, But It’s Worth It By Sharon Knierim
Who says that Christmas is lots of extra work? Some of us admit that this favorite of all holidays does require a few extra chores. Of course, these are probably the folks who have the good luck to be invited to every party. (Don’t we all wish we were those people?) The truth of the matter is that the last holiday of the year can be really labor-intensive, and if you—like most of us—are not prepared and have not planned well, the stress you endure can be overwhelming. There are those among us who begin planning for next Christmas as they pack away the Christmas just recently passed. These are certainly the epitome of highly organized individuals. I always wonder if these people just don’t like surprises. Their explanations range from wanting to be ahead of the game (nobody can argue with that) to getting in on those fabulous after-the-holidays sales and special offers. This shopping philosophy has never worked for me. The people who I have traditionally presented with gifts are remarkably fickle and change their likes and dislikes at least three or four times each year…or they end up gaining (or losing) 25 pounds during the calendar year, making the size of that pair of flannel pajamas

I bought 10 months ago hopelessly wrong. As you might guess, I am among the league of last-minute shoppers driving sales clerks crazy on December 24th. Historically, however, these nearly late gifts have been very well received; in fact, they seem to be more appreciated than the gifts that required months of research and planning. Go figure. Maybe that’s the way Santa works, too. Gift selection and the giving of gifts seem like a piece of cake compared to the menus for December. For each reception or party, there are scads of considerations. Who likes what? Will vegetarians or vegans be attending? Does someone have a food allergy? We have to bear in mind that nearly 75 percent of our friends and acquaintances have diabetes. These factors alone eliminate nearly half our recipe file. Of course, every cook and every chef wants to show up at any gathering with an offering that brings the WOW! factor. These

celebrations require more of us than just a bag of potato chips and a container of French onion dip. At Christmastime, our reputations are on the line. We want to impress everyone, and we want to feign surprise when the hostess and guests beg us for the recipe. One friend of ours is so sure that everyone will love her cooking that she carries extra printed copies of recipes in her purse. Now, that’s confidence! What is the most challenging aspect of the Christmas holiday for you? Is it the food and treats? Is it all the shopping? Is it the pressure of bringing everyone together for a special occasion? If you’re worried about guests having a truly memorable time, just learn to relax. Remember: Even with the most detailed planning, something always goes awry, changing your event from memorable to unforgettable. That’s the fun of entertaining! Be flexible and go with the flow. If something does not turn out just as planned, be a good sport. After all, it’s all about having a good time with the people who are important to you. One year, caroling was the aspect of the holidays that caused me the most stress. Of course, caroling is a wonderful activity. It’s fun for the carolers and for those who enjoy being serenaded. On the year in question, a neighbor and I planned a caroling party for the neighborhood children. The neighbor kids were a pretty vocal bunch, so we figured they would be good candidates for our Christmas choir. The neighbor was a music teacher and I was a doughnut maker—it should have been a sure thing. On the night of the party, every child in the neighborhood showed up to go caroling. However, those children must have left their singing voices at home. Instead of singing, they stared wide-eyed and open-mouthed at the people handing out cookies and fudge. What to do? The music teacher and the doughnut maker formed a duo and sang the night away. By the time we returned to our kitchen, I did not feel so generous about handing out those doughnuts, but, in the spirit of the holiday, the kids were all treated. They finally went home, leaving trails of sugar and maple icing strewn about. I’ve always wondered why those children did not sing. Call me Scrooge, but I have always hoped that Santa left a little lump of coal in their stockings. Whatever holiday challenges we’re facing this season, everyone will have a better time if we all remember to go with the flow. Happy holidays! WE

FACES Day Spa Enjoy a Whole-Body Spa Experience By Marge Shoemaker
Faces Day Spa is about more than faces. They offer services from head to toe, including newly added medi-spa services. Faces Day Spa is about leaving your cares outside and enjoying a little vacation from the stresses of life. They’re serious about uninterrupted relaxation— they ask that cell phones be turned off or left in the car. Owner Dan Nedved was excited to share that Faces Day Spa is now a medi-spa, with Dr. Alan Jensen as the director. Dan says that incorporating medi-spa services is a natural fit to better serve their clients. All the treatments are implemented or supervised by medically trained staff. Treatments may include body sculpting, including use of truSculpt 3D for noninvasive treatment of fatty areas. This treatment uses radiofrequency to reduce fat deposits in a single treatment. Cosmetic treatments include Botox and other injectable fillers. These treatments will smooth fine lines and diminish wrinkles. Kybella is a treatment for under-the-chin fat that may require a series of visits for optimal results. Micro-needling is another method for the treatment of fine lines on the face. The 22 technicians at Faces Day Spa are passionate about providing the very best results for each client. Most of the staff has been at Faces for six years or more. According to Dan, “Our people love to come to work. They know they are making others feel better about themselves, and that makes them happy.” Clients want results without the investment of time and money necessary for destination spas. According to Dan, the best results are achieved when clients attend regular sessions (length of time varies with the procedure and desired results). Your face tells the world how you feel, not just how you look. Nearly everyone experiences times of tiredness, exhaustion, and stress. Those times show on your face, skin, and eyes. Faces Day Spa technicians trained in skin care will create a customized treatment for you. Are you bothered by lines and wrinkles? They will help you minimize the damage. Is your skin pigmentation irregular? They will help you smooth it out. Are you experiencing skin breakouts like acne or rashes? They will tailor a solution for your skin. They often utilize masks or dermabrasion for facial resurfacing. Myotonology, which is electrical firming, may be the solution for saggy skin, multiple chins, or baggy eyes. The face is a natural place to focus our skin care attention, but perhaps our hands are just as much on

display. Of course, Faces Day Spa offers manicures and pedicures. They extend the treatment by exfoliating the skin, treating the nail and cuticle, massaging the arms and lower legs, and rehydrating the skin prior to adding long-lasting nail color. All tools are sanitized before use, and the area is kept clean and neat. Pedicures can attend to calluses and dry feet. Special treatments may incorporate warmed milk and honey. (You may have heard that Cleopatra maintained her beauty by using milk and honey—don’t you deserve the same treatment?) Milk is a natural exfoliator because of the lactic acid. Raw honey has long been regarded as a natural humectant that adds moisture to the skin. Treatments may also include paraffin as a method of hydration. Most of us also experience muscle pain due to stress or repetitive motion (or lack of motion!). The massage therapists at Faces Day Spa know just what to do. Basic massages are meant to relax the muscles. Other massages are designed to attend to special needs, such as strains or minor injuries. Couples massages offer a special time of bonding and relaxation, whether with your spouse, your mom or daughter, or your best friend. Some massages are specially designed for oncology patients. Whatever your needs, your massage will be customized to meet them. Hair removal is also addressed at Faces Day Spa. Waxing is one of their popular services. The particular waxing method will be determined by the areas you want treated and the extent of hair to be removed. The best thing about waxing is that it doesn’t just remove the hair…repeated treatments actually slow hair growth. Softened regrowth also deters ingrown hairs. The damage to our bodies that results in lines, wrinkles, bulges, and the like doesn’t happen overnight. Through careful attention and treatment over a period of time, the damage can be minimized. Take a little vacation to Faces Day Spa, is located at 2605 South 84th Street, in Omaha. Call 402-3848400 for an appointment. Fresh Concept
The Smile You’ve Always Wanted Is Cosmetic Dentistry for You? By Kylie Gumpert
One thing’s for certain: Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. But what if you feel your smile isn’t up to snuff? If your pearly whites aren’t so pearly? If you have a missing tooth, or teeth that are cracked, damaged, or have large spaces between them? Here’s what happens when you feel self-conscious about your teeth: You don’t smile as much, and that can negatively affect your relationship with the world around you. If you don’t want people to see your teeth, you may try to speak in a way that keeps your teeth hidden. You might come across as unfriendly because you avoid smiling. You might get nervous when meeting new people or speaking in front of a large group. You might even avoid going out with friends because the stress of making sure no one notices, asks about, or judges your teeth would prevent you from having a good time. That’s no way to live! Luckily, you don’t have to. Cosmetic dental procedures can treat every one of these concerns, helping you feel confident to go out and seize each day. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), cosmetic dentistry is dentistry aimed at creating a positive change to teeth in a way that complements both the general and oral health of a patient. One of the most common cosmetic dental procedures is teeth whitening. Over time, your teeth can be discolored by things like foods and drinks, medications, and tobacco use. Over-the-counter whitening products such as strips, toothpaste, or gel are considered safe by dentists, though they suggest that you consult with them before starting treatment, especially if you have sensitive teeth or other dental concerns. For the quickest and most dramatic results, opt for in-office whitening, which can often be completed in just one visit. When done at the office, stronger whitening agents are used, along with a gel that helps protect the gums and enamel from damage. According to the AACD, teeth can brighten up to 10 shades in one hour. Afterward, the dentist will provide a take-home whitening maintenance kit, as well. Depending on how well you take care of your teeth, the results of whitening can last for more than a year. Another common cosmetic dentistry product is called Invisalign, which is a custom, clear retainer that fits over teeth and gradually pushes them into place. You may have heard Invisalign retainers referred to as “clear braces.” They can be used to correct many of the same problems addressed by traditional braces. Your orthodontist can assess whether Invisalign is likely to work for you. A 3D scanner such as the iTero intraoral scanner will create 3D images of your teeth to give your dentist a better idea of which teeth need the most guidance. These images may also be used to generate something like a
20
December 2017
time-lapse video of how your teeth will move over time and what the results should be. As teeth shift, you’ll work with your dentist or orthodontist to have new retainers made. Invisalign retainers are generally worn all day and all night, aside from when you are eating and brushing or flossing your teeth. For adults, it usually takes around one year to achieve the desired results. The iTero intraoral scanner can be used for other cosmetic dental procedures, as well. High-tech scanners like these help speed up entire procedure processes because they can help your dentist more efficiently consult, create digital renderings of teeth, and develop an appropriate care plan. Cosmetic bonding is often used to repair teeth that have minor damage, such as a chip or discoloration. In this procedure, porcelain and a hard plastic material called resin are bonded to the tooth using a high-intensity light. This covers any damage. Results can last for several years if you maintain your oral health. Porcelain veneers can achieve results similar to those of cosmetic bonding. In this procedure, the outer layer of the tooth is filed down so that the veneer fits better on the tooth. According to the AACD, this procedure is generally used to address gaps between teeth, fractures, or teeth with generally poor color, shape, and contours. Once you and your dentist decide to use porcelain veneers, she will file down the teeth that are receiving veneers, find the porcelain shade that is closest to your tooth color, and take an impression of your mouth. The impression is generally sent out to a laboratory, where the veneers are fabricated in a couple of weeks. Once ready, the veneers are attached to the tooth using resin. Some patients may be good candidates for “no prep” veneers, which don’t require any filing of the tooth. Whether or
www.womensedition.com
not you receive a temporary veneer depends on how much of the tooth has been filed down and whether the appearance of the filed tooth bothers you. For more extensive tooth damage, including tooth decay, enamel erosion, and even structural issues caused by grinding, crowns might be a better option. In this procedure, the dentist files down the damaged tooth, takes an impression of it and the surrounding area, and creates a temporary replacement crown to protect it. It can take some time to create a permanent porcelain or resin crown, so you’ll schedule another appointment to have it attached to your filed-down tooth once it’s ready. Sensitivity to temperature may increase after a crown procedure; if that becomes a problem for you, be sure to mention it to your dentist at your follow-up appointment. For teeth that are unsalvageable, you may need an oral surgeon to put in a dental implant. Compared to other cosmetic dental procedures, a dental implant is costly, invasive, and timeconsuming, but it is the most effective and permanent way to address the important issue of tooth loss. When you are missing a tooth, the underlying bone in your jaw deteriorates because its growth is no longer being stimulated. If implants aren’t used, especially in cases of several missing teeth, this bone loss may eventually change the shape of your face. If the tooth in question is not yet missing but needs to be removed, your dentist or oral surgeon will remove it. If significant bone loss has already occurred, bone grafting may be required before the implant procedure can take place. After the bone heals, your oral surgeon will drill a titanium implant into your jaw bone. The bone in your jaw may need a few months to fuse with the implant before the abutment can be placed. This extension of the
implant is where the artificial tooth will be attached. Advancements in technology have made exploring cosmetic dentistry options more fun. With 3D scanning, you may be able to see what the outcomes of a particular procedure or method will look like for your mouth. This type of precision can ease a lot of stress when you’re trying to choose the best option for your teeth. 3D printing is also offering some interesting options in terms of tooth replacement, allowing dentists to create artificial teeth in the office instead of sending orders out to a dental lab. This practice is not yet widespread, but it has the potential to significantly shorten the amount of time patients have to wait to receive permanent crowns. Finding a cosmetic dentist may take a little research. Cosmetic dentistry is not a recognized specialty, which means any dentist can identify as a cosmetic dentist, even if she isn’t a part of the AACD. You can start by using the AACD’s tool to find local, qualified cosmetic dentists. Your regular dentist is also a great place to get a referral—she has likely worked with oral surgeons and cosmetic dentists in your area. Once you have a short list, make sure to ask them for their credentials, as well as for patient referrals and before and after photos. A personal consultation may be complimentary, so be sure to ask. Having dental work done is nobody’s favorite pastime, but that’s no reason to let your damaged or unsightly teeth stop you from living your life to the fullest. Make an appointment today to learn more about your options. Once you see what your smile could look like, you won’t want to wait! Out and About
Spezia Fine Dining With Heart By Emily Kerr
Tucked between several hotels in the heart of Omaha is one of our city’s hidden gems: the Italian restaurant Spezia. Boasting two party rooms that can combine for large parties, Spezia has been the gracious host of numerous events, including Christmas parties, anniversaries, corporate dinners, and family gatherings. It’s also a wonderful place for a romantic dinner for two or a festive evening on the patio. Brian Reilly wears many hats at Spezia, serving as an operating partner, the general manager, and the head chef. He starts every morning at the wood-fire grill, and he prides himself on putting out a quality product on an extremely consistent basis. Packed with customers every day, it is no wonder the family-owned restaurant is so popular in Omaha’s fine dining scene. Tony Denman, one of Spezia’s loyal patrons, notes that Spezia is “busy because they do it right…people appreciate the top food quality.” Named after a seaside town in Italy, Spezia has several sister restaurants. Bracco, in Okoboji, has

a gorgeous waterfront banquet hall and can host a with Spezia staff members wedding party of up to 400 people! Their location in Sioux Falls serves a worldly menu of pad Thai, fish tacos, ramen, and other popular dishes to tantalize the taste buds. Brian entered the culinary industry at a young age, attending culinary school in Council Bluffs when he was 20 years old. He knew he wanted to be in a fine dining atmosphere. Brian remembers the first time he came to Spezia, being drawn in from the parking lot by the tantalizing smell of the wood-fire grill and olive oil. He started at Spezia 14 years ago on the salad line, and he worked his way up to become the lead line cook and, eventually, the head chef. Brian helps implement the Spezia menu, which has

stayed essentially the same since they opened in 2004. “At the end of the day, I try to keep the core the same,” he explains. “A customer who came here 10 years ago and ordered the French Acadian chicken linguine can come in today and get the same dish.” This commitment to consistency and quality has not gone unnoticed by their patrons. With a level of service and standards that are extremely high, Brian knows his customers have come to expect the best. “We know our clientele, and they know us,” says Brian. “If something isn’t up to standards, they’ll let us know.” The food quality isn’t the only thing that keeps customers coming back time and again—it’s also the personable service. “Someone greets you with ‘Hello’ at the door and says ‘Thank you’ when you leave,” Brian notes. He firmly believes in never cutting corners, and he takes deliberate steps to ensure the quality of his food and level of service. One of these steps is a commitment to using the best ingredients available— wherever they are. For beef, that means Nebraska. Brian began a partnership with the Greater Omaha Packing Company in recent years to bring the beef back to Omaha. At one time, he was seeing the best cuts of meat from Omaha going to other restaurants throughout the country. Why not use locally sourced product ourselves? he thought. Thus, Spezia began to hand-cut everything in house, as well as aging the beef for an exquisite texture and flavor.
With their salmon from Scotland and their lamb from Australia, the restaurant truly delivers on a global level. Local patron Jackie B. raves, “The last time I ate at Spezia, I was with my dinner club. Few people were having dessert, because everyone was so full, but everyone was raving about the food. I had the salmon, and it was to die for. I absolutely love that restaurant! Great service, great atmosphere.” Of course, a restaurant’s success is the sum of its parts—great service, great atmosphere, and great food. One particular challenge at Spezia, Brian says, is the delicacy of cooking on a wood-fire grill. The skills needed for that job only come with time and experience. His mentality, though, is that “you get out of it what you put in.” He believes it’s worth the effort to prepare fine cuts of steak and seafood, served year-round, to patrons with the highest expectations. Spezia is located at 3125 South 72nd Street, in Omaha, just a couple of blocks north of the 72nd Street exit off of Interstate 80. Stop in or call 402-391-2950 to make a reservation. You can also learn more (and make an online reservation) at speziarestaurant.com/spezia/omaha/. Try Spezia for your next gathering, family dinner, or romantic evening. And don’t forget Sunday brunch! Enjoy a bottomless mimosa or bloody Mary, a bruschetta bar, and a buffet with 14 hot items like sage pot roast and coconut shrimp. Spezia is open daily for lunch and dinner. WE

This choice is most gratifying for us…and for our clients.” Their dedication to Parsons House shows in every detail. This up-to-date facility provides residents with security, dignity, and as much care as they need, including services for those with memory impairment. Kim created the charming, tasteful interiors. In this delightful living space, seniors also enjoy thoughtfully designed activities, celebrations, and all sorts of opportunities to keep them living life to the fullest. Collette Mieres is the executive director at Parsons House. She is energetic and proud of the way Parsons House succeeds in fulfilling its mission. Her background has prepared her well to achieve that mission—she had a successful career as a nurse before becoming involved with
assisted living. “I have always known that my career path was to be of service to those in need,” she says. “I have 11 years of experience in assisted living management. I find this profession so rewarding! Parsons House is a joyful place to work and live.” Collette is proud of the work she and her staff do. “We have three full shifts, so we can provide around-theclock care. We are committed to giving our residents the fullest lives, the kindest care, and the dignity they deserve.”

Seen from the parking lot, the low profile of the building is deceptive. The facility is actually quite large. On one side are the fully separate memory care cottages. The other side offers one and two-bedroom apartments. Each side features extensive enclosed courtyards that are beautifully landscaped. Parsons House offers both public and private dining rooms, which are ideal spaces for family visits. “Those dining rooms will be very busy during the holiday season,” Collette says with a smile. The grand dining room has a wall of windows looking out on Champions Run golf course, where residents have a social membership. Many other active pursuits are available to the residents in both the assisted living and memory care units. Bowling, kickboxing, tai chi, yoga, beanbag baseball, and even juggling are among the many options. Of course, group walks, individual workout equipment, and exercise classes designed for the residents’ needs are also available. For times of quieter pursuits, there are lots of choices, such as bridge, poker, trivia, canasta, and hooks and needles clubs. The library offers some great reads for those so inclined, and regular arts and crafts classes are offered in a spacious craft room. A glance at the calendars on the Parsons House website shows how busy residents can be if they choose. The options for activities run the gamut from art to Zumba and include many field trip adventures. “Being a senior is no reason to sit in the corner,” Collette declares. “We continually present new activities, along with the tried
and true, to stimulate our clients’ minds and to delight them, too.” “When we go on an excursion, it could be to a movie, a museum, a musical event, or an apple festival. Such hassle-free adventures— because we arrange everything—are favorites. The conversations afterward are lively and filled with laughter. Every holiday and each resident’s birthday calls for a celebration. One new resident who moved in from out of state was initially not pleased to be here. After just three or four days, she declared, ‘If I had known it was going to be this wonderful, I would have come sooner!’” A most important element that Parsons House provides to all its residents is dignified care. As Collette says, “Our residents have given greatly of themselves to their families. Now it is their turn to receive. The staff and I are guided in every undertaking by these seven principles: think deeply, speak gently, love much, laugh a lot, work hard, give freely, and be kind.” These are on a piece of art right outside her office, as a constant reminder of their goals. A resident’s family member recently took the time to write to Collette. At Parsons House, the note reads, “our loved ones are looked after with respect and kindness.” Another relative was pleased to find that “the house is not institutional; it is up to date, well maintained, and clean.” See for yourself how appealing Parsons House is by touring the facility, located at 14325 Eagle Run Drive. A Truly Beautiful Gift You Can’t Go Wrong with Salon and Spa Gift Cards By Loretta McCollum
The holiday shopping season has arrived! Our list is long, and our time is short. What can we do? Enter the gift card. Gift cards can be purchased for anything from acupuncture to zinnias, but you often need look no further than the letter B. A beauty gift card is a perfect way to let someone know she’s appreciated. Spa gift cards are available for multiple pampering experiences. The spa manicure experience may include relaxing with a warm neck pillow while a technician applies an exfoliating scrub from your elbows to your fingertips, followed by a hydrating massage and a warm paraffin dip to seal in moisture. Nails are clipped, shaped, filed, and polished. For the toes, begin with an oil-infused foot bath, add a hydrating massage, and top it off with a warm paraffin soak before the polish. A chocolate pedicure immerses the feet in a chocolate soak, followed by a chocolate mask, and then chocolate lotion to finish it off. Cocoa is a natural moisturizer. While waiting for the polish to dry, satisfied clients enjoy a piece of antioxidizing dark chocolate. For wine lovers, the feet are wrapped in a grape mask and massaged with grapeseed oil while the lucky recipient sips a glass of her favorite red or white! If you’re shopping for more of a margarita gal, imagine her soaking her toes in a lime bath, scrubbing off that dead skin with a sea salt scrub, and
ending with lime massage oil and a shot of tequila! Got someone on your list who isn’t into nail art? A gift card for a facial is a wonderful way to pamper someone. Basic facials clean, rehydrate, and rejuvenate this area that is most exposed to free radicals and the elements. Beyond the basics, an antioxidant facial utilizes creams and masks enriched with beta carotene and vitamins A and E, all of which fight free radicals. Paraffin facials place layers of paraffin-soaked gauze on the skin to soften and seal in moisture. Do you know someone who needs to relax but would never splurge on a professional massage for herself? A massage relaxes muscles, relieves stress, gets rid of knots, and can help with chronic pain. Swedish massages utilize broad strokes up and down the body, focusing wherever attention is needed. Hot stone massages help relax tight muscles with warm stones placed on particular ›››

points. A deep tissue massage is an intense massage, targeting muscle knots. There’s also Shiatsu, a Japanese technique where the therapist applies pressure to multiple points. Reflexology applies pressure to certain areas of the feet and is especially wonderful for someone who stands for long periods of time. Body wraps are popular spa treatments. With a seaweed wrap, a warm seaweed paste is applied to the entire body. Seaweed is great for skin detox and is rich in vitamins and amino acids. A mud wrap sounds messy, but it’s perfect for drawing impurities from the body as it dries. An herbal wrap uses nourishing herbs blended with oils to smooth and soothe. Maybe someone on your gift list would like a noninvasive treatment such as dermabrasion or Botox injections. Of course, this type of gift is not for just anyone on your list! Reserve this for someone you know well and who you know is already planning to undergo such a procedure. A plastic surgeon will be happy to help you consider gift options. A new year begs a new look. A salon gift card for a post-holiday makeover is sure to be a hit. It’s the perfect time for a new haircut, color, style, or makeup palette. Or how about gifting a particular service like a perm, a weave, or hair extensions? After the stress of the holidays, everyone looks forward to a little “me” time. That includes you! If you’re hoping to receive a beauty gift card in your own stocking, don’t forget to drop hints! Mention how you’ve been dying to check out the spa that just opened or how you can’t wait to try that color-changing nail polish. You can’t go wrong with a beauty gift card, but you can go wrong with presentation. Don’t just leave it in the envelope it came in! Hide the card in a decorated mason jar filled with candy. Embellish a small jewelry box, add a ribbon, and hang it on the tree. Put it in a small cosmetic bag along with some travel-sized beauty products, and you have a great stocking stuffer. For a mani or pedi gift card, put the card in a box, cover it with cotton balls, and place a bottle of nail polish on the top. The more creative, the more fun! Enjoy your holiday shopping, and don’t forget to pamper yourself! Sources for this article included: plasticsurgery.org, verywell.com, footfiles. com, and pinterest.com. WE

Your Well-Being Is Assured Reconnecting With Our Joy
By Janet Van deWalle
“A misty morning does not signify a cloudy day.” —Ancient Proverb I hear from many of you that you have decided to stop watching the news and reading the newspaper. You cannot continue to focus your attention on grief, anger, and fear. You want to move forward with your lives. “A baby is God’s opinion that the world should go on.” —Carl Sandburg What we put our attention to is what we will create in our lives. This is the Law of Attraction. By being afraid or apprehensive, we will simply attract more of the same into our lives. Many of us realize this, and it is why we have decided to stop putting our attention towards creating more of what it is we do not want. What about those of us who are still struggling? How can we get over these feelings of fear? How can we move on with our lives? It really is quite simple. Just like those who have gotten past their terrible feelings, we need to make a decision. A decision is the first step to creating a new feeling tone—which sets the stage for creating a different life experience.
“Hope is the feeling we have that the feeling we have is not permanent.”—Mignon McLaughlin Does it feel better to have the latest update from CNN, or does it feel better to go for a walk with your daughter? Does it feel better to read the front page of the newspaper, or does it feel better to flip to the comics page? By systematically and consistently asking ourselves “What feels better?” and then choosing the thing that makes us feel better, we will slowly but surely move past the fear. Reconnecting with our joy must be our number one priority. We have to realize that the only person that we have any control over is ourself. We have to realize that our job is to seek our joy and follow our bliss. Some people may say that we are acting like an ostrich— hiding our heads in the sand—that we are not facing reality. (A wise person once told me: Never, ever face reality unless it is perfect in every way.) We have to realize that the pure positive energy that flows through us is the same energy that makes the sun come up every morning. It is the same energy that makes the rains come and the seasons change. We have to know that all is truly well. “Your well-being is assured.” —Abraham/Hicks

Holidays: A Time for Sharing Building New From the Old This time of year, there is always an abundance of gatherings with family and friends. These gatherings are the perfect times to tell stories and share tales of the family. Encourage guests of all ages to contribute or ask questions. Grandparents usually have some great tales to tell. Family traditions are a source of good stories. Mom used to put out peanut brittle on December 6th to celebrate Saint Nicholas’ Day. We asked why. Her explanation was that it was something her grosmater (grandmother) did in early December to start the Christmas season. We know that her family originated in Luxembourg. Western Europeans often celebrated that time by giving small gifts. Many of the tales of St. Nicholas are a basis for current Christmas traditions: stockings by the fireplace, oranges (representing gold balls) in the toe, candy canes reminiscent of the bishop’s staff, and secret gift-giving (St. Nick didn’t want recognition for his deeds). Mom did tell us that they called their grandparents by the German grosmater and grospater until World War I. At that time, people who spoke German were often under suspicion, so the family quit using many terms they learned from their grandparents. When we understand where certain family traditions came from, we can maintain connections with our past. At the same time, we can institute new traditions. As families grow, new ideas

can be combined with old. My husband and I tried to combine his family traditions and mine with a big family meal, shared with both sets of grandparents, uncles, and cousins. My daughter and her sons don’t particularly care for the big formal dinner with all the trimmings at the holidays. She has established a casual, kid-friendly menu of pizza, chips, and other foods the boys preferred when they were younger…and which don’t require major preparation. As the boys have grown, they still celebrate holidays casually, even though the menu has changed somewhat. My daughter-in-law doesn’t care for the traditional holiday menu, either. They have chosen to either eat at a restaurant or substitute other foods to share with the family. Our oldest son includes whatever extended family is available. Whatever you do for the holidays, make it a time of sharing. Grandparents get to spend time with grandkids. Grown siblings spend time with each other. Kids and adults all experience a time of closeness…even if it’s just for a couple of hours. Take the time to talk to each other. Share stories. Listen to what the others have to say. Start your own family traditions by recognizing the old and building something new. Happy holidays! Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Delight in the Season Bring Holiday Sparkle to Your Home
By Robyn V. Powell
The holidays are finally here! It’s that magical time of the year when family and friends gather to celebrate. All across America, spare bedrooms are being spruced up and stockings hung by the fire in anticipation of loved ones arriving home. With all this excitement, preparing our homes for celebration and guests can seem like a daunting task. With a little bit of planning, you can prepare yourself and your home for the holidays and enjoy the season with minimal stress. We’ve gathered some decorating ideas and time-saving tips to help you make the most of this most wonderful time of the year. The first step in preparing your home for the holidays is easy—get into the spirit! Usher in the holidays by surrounding yourself with the familiar scents and sounds of the season. Light a candle infused with the fragrant holiday scents of fresh pine boughs, cinnamon, or cloves. Next, set the mood for holiday cheer with music. Find a radio station that plays classic holiday tunes, buy a holiday CD, or download a playlist from the internet. You’ll be in a holiday mood in no time! Things always take longer than you expect, so it’s important to start preparing early. Set the stage for your guests’ holiday experience at your front door. An entryway decorated with greenery, tasteful lights, and holiday decor will make everyone feel warmly welcomed from the moment they arrive.

If you have a dedicated guest room, make the bed up with fresh linens and ensure the room is ready to go. To save time, consider having your linens professionally laundered— that comforter is probably too big for the washing machine, anyway. Many laundromats have drop-off service, and some even offer pick-up and delivery! Add a little merriment to the guest bath and powder room with scented candles or soaps and miniature poinsettias. Just before guests arrive, place a small arrangement of holiday-themed flowers and foliage on the night table. This adds a festive touch to your guests’ space, rekindling warm holiday memories. When setting the holiday table, add refinement and stylish flair with subtle seasonal details. Tuck a sprig of fresh holly in a silver napkin ring or add a personal and distinctive touch with elegantly inscribed place cards. If you’re expecting a large group and are coming up short on flatware, serving dishes, or table linens, look up your local party rental store. They’re sure to be well-stocked in holiday items. Take inspiration from this year’s holiday decor trends. ›››

Farmhouse style and country living lead the way, drawing on natural elements like distressed wood, galvanized metal, and textured fabrics in holiday colors. This is the perfect time to bring out family heirlooms. Trimming the tree becomes a special family time when ornaments remind you of special people. Many families choose a new ornament to commemorate each year. Tap into your creativity and discover ways to breathe new life into those passed-down items tucked away in attics and drawers. Dust off an old chandelier and hang crystals as ornaments. Just watch how they sparkle when they catch the tree lights! Vintage silver candlesticks and white enamelware pair beautifully with bright holiday hues. Glass apothecary or mason jars filled with colorful candy make for inviting displays on tables. Check out antique and home decor shops for unusual vintage items such as orchard baskets, sleds, and lanterns to lend a vintage feel to your decor. Some people love decorating their own homes for the holidays…and some people just don’t. If the thought of holiday decorating makes you feel like a Scrooge, hire a decorator or florist. Professionals who specialize in holiday decor are experts at decking the halls. They lend a designer’s touch to your home, save you time, and eliminate stress. Nothing says “home for the holidays” like beautiful exterior lights, but getting the job done is time-consuming and involves ladders and electrical safety know-how. Trained, insured professional lighting experts can handle this safely and efficiently, allowing you to create a custom design without the hassle. It’s always best to receive quotes from several companies and find out exactly what is included in the price. Will the company provide all decorations and lights? Will they take them down after the season? Will they handle any maintenance issues that arise? Request photos of their previous jobs to see if you like their work. As you prepare your home for warm gatherings with loved ones, keep in mind that the holidays are supposed to be a time of enjoyment, not of stress. You’ve made your list and checked it twice. Now, celebrate the splendor of this holiday season, and enjoy what matters most— spending time with family and friends! Forty Years with Goldsmith Silversmith Jeweler to the Stars…and to You By Emily Kerr
When Dwaine Ferguson opened Goldsmith Silversmith, he could never have predicted the success he would achieve over his extensive career. With over 40 years in business, he has embraced the motto of “if you can dream it, we can make it,” which shows in every piece of jewelry he designs. Catering to countless celebrity clients over his career, he has designed pieces for Grace Potter, Dennis Hopper, Dusty Hill, ZZ Top, and Sean Penn. The famously flamboyant Liberace was a patron of Goldsmith Silversmith, once entering clad in a full-length mink coat, surrounded by an entourage. Even Goldie Hawn owns a pair of earrings designed by Dwaine! Located at 1019 Howard Street in downtown Omaha, Goldsmith Silversmith began as The Silversmith when Dwaine bought it in 1974. At that time, the shop sold 90 percent silver. Goldsmith was added to the name 10 years later to reflect the growing importance of gold items in the business. For Dwaine, the most rewarding part of his job is building custom pieces, which makes up about half of his business. With a mind for creativity, he truly enjoys his work. “I have unending ideas in my head,” he shares. “Somebody will walk in with maybe an idea or a handful of old jewelry that she doesn’t like anymore, and we’ll take that and turn it into something new and exciting.” He sees this often with wedding sets, which he can combine to make something innovative and more versatile than the original. Custom rings typically take six weeks or more, depending on the piece. Dwaine was an architectural draftsman for nine years before he got into the jewelry profession. He also crafted sculptures to sell at art fairs. Seeing the success of other vendors at these fairs inspired him to start making jewelry. Around that time, his friend and mentor Wayne Selsor needed an assistant in a jewelry class he was teaching at UNO. It was the perfect fit for Dwaine, who became an integral part of teaching and demonstrating in the class. After branching out to teach from his own studio, Dwaine began working at The Silversmith, which eventually would be his own. Since then, he has been selling new and estate jewelry to clientele from all walks of life. Dwaine attributes much of his success to his customer service. “I think it’s dealing with your customers, treating your customers right, and doing what you need to do to get the job done,” he says. “How many people enjoy coming to work after 45 years?” This devotion shows both in his business and in his personal relationships with his customers. There is a feeling of family in the cozy store, from the father-daughter team working the counter to the friendly cat wandering the

shop. “When I grew up, your word and a handshake meant something,” Dwaine shares. “My repeat customer is my best customer.” Some of the families Dwaine works with have been coming to him for up to four generations. Going the extra mile for his customers is just how Dwaine works. Dwaine understands the necessity of quality, and he also knows that it takes a lot of trust for his customers to hand over their family jewelry for Dwaine to repair or redesign. One way he ensures the comfort of his customers is to allow them to personally inspect their gems through the loupe, identifying any smudges that may be visible. Dwaine then checks for these same marks again, once the item is finished. With a rise in concern for diamonds, Dwaine always wants his customers to leave feeling safe, and he does whatever he can to ensure that the pieces they go home with are appreciated forever. The feedback that Dwaine finds most satisfying is when his pieces get noticed in everyday situations. “Usually, you’re buying for yourself. But we all like it when other people think we have good taste and like what we have. It’s neat when that sort of thing happens.” To find out more about commissioning your own custom piece, call Dwaine at 402-342-1737. He and his team at Goldsmith Silversmith create statement pieces that truly leave a lasting impression. Build the Perfect Game Room
By Anne Yankus
There are lots of ways to make entertaining easier, and one of them is to create a game room in your home. Just imagine how much fun your family and friends will have shooting pool, playing poker, or video-gaming at your house! It’s a great way to bring people together. Game rooms can be many different things, so the first thing you’ll want to decide is what sort of games you’d like to play there. Billiards and table tennis are classic favorites for all ages, but they take up a lot of room. If you want to include these, plan for a lot of space for guests to move around the tables, as well as places to store all of the equipment needed to play each game. Tabletop games like board games or card games take up far less room and can utilize a single table with plenty of seating for any number of different games. While a simple kitchen table and chairs is really all you’ll need for these types of games, you can up your game, so to speak, with specialized tables designed specifically for tabletop gaming. This will certainly be more expensive than a folding card table, but you can’t beat the high-stakes look and feel of a custom gaming table. It can be designed to fit right in with the rest of your interiors. Last, but certainly not least, is the video game room, which has risen in popularity over the last couple of
decades. The latest trends in video games include consoles that make full use of your HD television and virtual reality (VR) headsets for immersive gaming. Not all video games are designed to be played in groups, but some of them are definitely group projects. Of course, you can easily find separate games for kids or adults. As you plan your game room, keep in mind what type of lighting, seating, and space you’ll need. If you do choose more electronic entertainment, also keep in mind where your electrical outlets, cable wall sockets, and ethernet ports (if you don’t have wireless internet) are located. And now, on to the beverages. Planning a home bar is more than just putting an actual bar table in the room. You need to keep it stocked with all the glassware and coolers you’ll need for your drinks of choice! Picking glassware can be tricky because you don’t want to buy every specialized drink glass on the market, but you don’t want to be drinking wine out of red Solo cups, either. A few multipurpose recommendations: coupe glasses, tumblers, wine goblets, ›››

and pilsners. Some other items to consider are pitchers, mixers, and shot glasses. It’s not always practical to have a full-sized refrigerator outside the kitchen, so you may want to invest in a specialized cooler. Wine coolers come in freestanding and wall-mounted units and are a perfect addition to any wine enthusiast’s home. For those who prefer canned or bottled drinks, general beverage refrigerators also come in a range of sizes. There are other specialized appliances to consider adding to your home bar, like ice makers and kegerators. Drinks and games make for a good party, but a great party has to have music! A simple sound bar is good for lower-volume gatherings. For a fuller sound, surround-sound is the way to go. A surround-sound system is made up of audio receivers and speakers placed around the room. The rule of thumb is to spend more money on your speakers than on your receiver, and make sure you pick up a receiver that has compatible connectivity with your music library. Even with your amazing game room, hosting holiday parties can be a lot of work, especially if they include a formal dinner. Fortunately, like many problems in life, this one can be solved by hiring a professional. There are many different party professionals to consider hiring when planning your holiday get-together. A party rental company is a no-brainer— they can provide everything from linens to serving platters to specialty stemware. If working all day in the kitchen isn’t your thing, caterers can take care of the menu, the cooking, and the clean-up. A bartender will be able to mix any drink your guests request or even create a custom cocktail for your party! If you have a small driveway and a large guest list, valets can keep the traffic moving and help your guests avoid a long walk from the car to your house. The holidays are a time for entertainment, parties, and fun! With the right experts and a well-stocked game room, your party will be the talk of the season. Thyroid and Adrenal Conditions Keeping a Healthy Hormone Balance
By Ashley Anderson
When it comes to our health, it’s easy to recognize problems like broken bones, tender lumps under the skin, or aching back pain. Changes in our hormone levels may be harder to detect and often go unnoticed for some time. The thyroid and adrenal glands are part of the endocrine system, which releases and regulates our hormones. When these glands malfunction, which occurs in as many as 10 percent of women older than 65, the symptoms are often dismissed as natural parts of menopause and aging. Although hormonal changes are to be expected at this age, they should be discussed with your doctor to make sure they’re not something more serious. The thyroid gland wraps around the lower front of the neck. It uses iodine from the food you eat to produce hormones that regulate body functions like metabolism, muscle strength, breathing, heart rate, menstrual cycles, cholesterol, and more. In partnership with the brain, the thyroid helps to maintain a healthy balance of these hormone levels. If these hormones are not produced in the proper amounts, you might begin to experience symptoms of thyroid conditions like hyperthyroidism (too much hormone) or hypothyroidism (too little hormone). With hyperthyroidism, you may experience anxiety, irritability or moodiness, nervousness or hyperactivity, sensitivity to high temperatures and sweating, shaking hands or trembling, hair loss, or missed menstrual cycles. With hypothyroidism, it’s generally the opposite: You may experience trouble sleeping,

fatigue, loss of concentration, dry skin and hair, depression, sensitivity to cold temperatures, heavy and frequent menstrual cycles, and joint or muscle pain. Other thyroid conditions include goiter, thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, and thyroid cancer. If left untreated, thyroid disease may cause organ damage or worse, so it’s important to talk to your physician if you are experiencing any of these symptoms. She may refer you for testing to an endocrinologist, a physician who specializes in the endocrine system. Tests to diagnose thyroid conditions may include a thyroid scan or thyroid biopsy. These will identify what treatments are required to remediate the symptoms. Treatment can range from medication to a thyroidectomy (a surgical procedure to partially or entirely remove the thyroid gland). Anyone can develop a thyroid condition, but it primarily affects women over 50 years old. Your risk for developing a thyroid condition increases if you have a family history of thyroid issues or autoimmune disease, have type 1 diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis,
www.womensedition.com
or have been exposed to radiation in your upper chest and neck area. Your doctor may perform regular screenings if you show signs or have a history of thyroid conditions. The adrenal glands, also known as the suprarenal glands, are also part of the endocrine system. These glands sit on top of your kidneys. The adrenal cortex, or the outer part of the gland, produces corticosteroid hormones, which affect things like metabolism, cardiovascular function, and blood pressure. The adrenal medulla, or the inner part of the gland, produces less essential hormones, like adrenaline to help us deal with physical and emotional stress. Adrenal glands work in partnership with other glands in the body to produce and control hormones. If any of the related glands are not functioning properly, you may begin to experience symptoms like weight gain near the face and neck, high blood pressure, skin conditions like acne, muscle and bone weakness, moodiness and irritability, high blood sugar levels, or depression. Adrenal gland disorders may also affect hair production, sex drive, and menstrual cycles. The most common adrenal gland disorders and diseases include Addison’s disease, adrenal cancer, Cushing’s syndrome, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Treatment is based on the diagnosis and can include medication to adjust hormone levels or surgery to remove part or all of the adrenal glands. Pay attention to your emotional and mental health, in addition to your physical health, for signs of thyroid or adrenal gland conditions. It is important to speak with your physician or seek an endocrinologist if you are experiencing any of these symptoms. Don’t write off these symptoms as menopausal misery—although there are many similarities, only specific testing can truly determine the cause of your symptoms. With the proper treatment and care, most endocrine system diagnoses can be managed to minimize symptoms. Removal of the offending glands can sometimes solve the problem, though patients often need to take maintenance medication after surgery, to make up for the hormonal job the gland was doing before it malfunctioned. Medications that replace thyroid deficiency may need to be taken for the rest of the patient’s life. Talk to your regular doctor, an internal medicine specialist, or an endocrinologist if you are experiencing symptoms that may indicate thyroid or adrenal disease. An Inside Look
Custom Gems It’s Not Just for Rock Collectors By Marge Shoemaker
Custom Gems has something for everyone. It’s a jewelry store that offers fine silver, turquoise, and precious gems. It’s a museum of minerals and fossils—and almost everything is for sale, though there is one fossil that they won’t part with. It’s a field trip to explore evidence of ancient seas. It’s a hobby shop that sells supplies and literature for rock hounds and all things lapidary. It’s a jewelry repair shop that also does custom jewelry design and creation. Tim Kautsch, who has owned the store since 2009, worked at Custom Gems in high school and while earning a degree in gemology online from the Gemological Institute of America. For one of his classes, he was sent a package of assorted gems and minerals and was required to type them. “I had it easy,” Tim recalls. “I worked every day with dozens of the same items the school sent a sampling of. I learned on the job.” He is familiar with gems—both precious and natural—from around the world. You may have seen a picture of the eight-foot-tall matching pair of amethyst geodes in an ad for the store. (If you haven’t, turn to page 37.) Items in the shop are arranged in groups. Fossils, both polished and in their natural state, are found in one area. Geodes, crystals, agates, and other minerals are in another. An area of already fashioned jewelry and gift items is found in yet another. “I like to see the customer look around the shop to see what we offer,” Tim comments. One of the services Custom Gems offers is making a new piece from something old. Tim and his staff know that jewelry is nearly always sentimental. Perhaps a customer has inherited a piece of jewelry from a beloved relative and wants it altered to a more modern style. At Custom Gems, they strive to create a new piece that respects the feelings attached to the original by using the original stones and precious metals (when possible) in creating something new and unique. Tim relates the case of a customer who had taken a ring to another shop to be resized. In the process, the stones were discolored. She brought it to Tim and asked what could be done. Tim managed to find stones of a similar size and color, repaired the piece, and ended with a happy customer. Tim knows it’s worth the trouble to look for something special when the customer leaves with a smile. Tim and his staff are talented artisans. Dustin creates custom jewelry and does stone setting. Kevin does laser welding, jewelry repair, and ring sizing. Heather, at the front desk, handles customer relations and keeps

everyone organized. Tim does stone cutting, creates custom pieces, and performs repairs. “We often work as a team,” Tim relates. “Sometimes it helps to have another pair of eyes or a new angle on a piece.” Working with items that have great sentimental value to the owners presents a unique challenge. Tim recalls a customer who came in with a religious statue that needed some repair…parts of the abalone shell lining used for the cloak were damaged and missing. “We all worked on her. It was tough to find the material and then shape it to match what we already had,” Tim recalls, “but by putting our heads together, we managed to complete the job to the customer’s satisfaction.” Because each piece is unique, each repair job is different. Kevin recalls another challenge—a money clip that once belonged to the customer’s father had worn thin and split. Kevin fashioned a piece of matching metal to cover the worn part while maintaining the original design. Tim brings out another piece, a large chunk of petrified wood. The customer recognized it had a unique design and trusted Tim to find the innate beauty by slicing and polishing one end. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece of art made from natural materials. In addition to their large inventory of minerals and fossils, Custom Gems carries everything you need to make your own jewelry. They also make custom jewelry themselves. “If you can imagine it, we’ll make it,” is their motto. They offer books and supplies for the hobbyist. Services include repairs of all kinds (done on site), fabrication, resizing, wire wrapping, customcasting, resetting stones, and replacing batteries. Their stock includes items from around the world for decorating your home. Prices range from 50 cents to thousands of dollars. Custom Gems is located at 8487 Frederick Street, in Omaha. Hours are Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They can be reached by phone at 402-397-9606 and found online at www.customgemsomaha.com. The New Washington Paradigms What They Mean for Your Money By George Morgan
Everybody has a worldview: an opinion about what the world should look like, how people should act, and how our institutions should work. These thoughts and opinions are called paradigms, and they range from issues of major significance, such as capital punishment or abortion, to such trivial things as which direction the bill should face when someone wears a baseball cap. All people have multiple paradigms, and they can and do change over time. Because they are made of opinions, they are not right or wrong, but they determine how we live our lives. It’s not just individuals who have paradigms—groups of people can have group paradigms, like those of a city, state, or nation. From 2008 to 2016, Washington had a clearly defined set of major paradigms. These included environmental protection, universal healthcare, immigration reform, and civil and gender rights. Like all actions, acting on large group or national paradigms often leads to unintended consequences. By “unintended consequences,” I mean just that—when action taken in one area results in a negative impact in another, often unrelated, area. Actions taken to fulfill national paradigms have resulted in many unintended consequences that affected the economy and, therefore, your money. Historically, the nation’s GDP has grown at an average rate of 3 percent plus. During the period of 2008 to 2016, GDP growth rate never exceeded 3 percent. We can point to this as an unintended consequence of several of the above paradigms. For example, the increase in environment actions was beneficial for the environment, but it put downward pressure on corporate earnings. Corporations spent time and resources complying with regulations—resources that could otherwise have been used to promote and improve the business. Of course, the purpose of environmental regulation is not to curb corporate profits. The effect on profits is the unintended consequence. Here’s another example: The mandates of the Affordable Care Act, intended to increase citizens’ access to health care, also increased the paperwork burden on employers and resulted in a decrease in hours worked by some employees. The ACA required that employees working more than 30 hours a week be considered full-time workers for the purposes of providing benefits. Some employers, facing increased costs without increased revenue to offset them, chose instead to further limit the number of hours their employees could work. Many parttimers saw their paycheck shrink because of it. Many of Washington’s new paradigms are 180 degrees from the previous ones. A short list includes tax reform, modification of health insurance, and reduction of government regulation. Tax reform is a major item that has ramifications across the broad economy. The stated objective is to simplify the tax codes for individuals but also significantly reduce the corporate tax rate. Currently, there are four trillion dollars of profits earned by American corporations which are sitting in European
50
December 2017
banks to avoid major tax liabilities. Lowering the corporate rate could spur a return of these dollars. If that occurred, GDP would increase significantly. Since the beginning of 2017, we have experienced some things that may be results of these new paradigms. The economy has had multiple quarters of GDP growing at a rate greater than 3 percent. The stock market has increased by almost 30 percent, dramatically increasing the net worth of Americans with this type of investment. Many of these Americans are in the middle class—the group that the paradigms are aimed to benefit the most. Professional organizations such as the American Association of Business Economists attribute these gains to Washington’s recent move to a friendlier attitude toward business. Will there be unintended consequences to Washington’s new paradigms? Of course. It is too early to predict with precision what those consequences will be, though some are reasonably obvious. A decrease in environmental regulation will impact the environment. A change in the tax code has the potential to worsen the deficit situation. Couple this with an increase in interest rates, and Congress could face major hurdles in passing balanced budgets. Simplifying the tax code also has major implications for the accounting industry. The stated goal of the current administration is to simplify the tax code so that taxpayers would just need to fill out a postcard to file their annual taxes. This would be a major convenience to taxpayers…except the ones who lose their jobs when the tax preparation industry dries up. Unintended consequences may be unavoidable, but we can look for the possibility of good news ahead. There is potential for the economy to grow at a pace which could return us to historic norms. This should be good for the general American population, but this outcome depends heavily on whether Congress can get a tax bill passed and just how transformational it really is. And, as always, the American people may use the next election cycle to direct those in Washington to change their paradigms once again. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy.

Seasons of Life
Geriatric Medicine Specialized Care for Seniors By Linda Barnes
Do you have aging parents or are you entering into your senior years? You may have heard of geriatric medicine but may not realize how much it can improve quality of life. Seniors are at greater risk for many health issues. The good news is that medical professionals are learning to manage such challenges with much better success. We all recognize some of the typical health problems that seniors face. We even make jokes about them. However easy it might be to make light of things like stiff joints, hearing loss, and poor driving habits, the truth is that quality of life suffers with every incapacity. With so much help available, we should be taking advantage of it! Geriatric medicine is basically a specialty with emphasis on diseases and other health issues related to aging. Because older people tend to have more health issues concurrently than younger folks do, doctors and other health professionals in geriatric medicine undergo specialized training to treat the health challenges unique to aging. Geriatricians, also called geriatric physicians, are medical doctors who pursue a specialty in senior health care. They work extensively with patients 60 years and older in order to become board-certified in geriatrics. They gain a deeper understanding of how multiple medical issues, multiple medications, and loss of cognitive ability affect seniors, and they learn how these issues can be managed.
Some of the health concerns that geriatric specialists often encounter are heart problems, diabetes, kidney issues, driving safety, joint problems, falls, and over-medication. In addition to physical issues, practitioners in geriatric medicine also look for depression, anxiety, memory problems, and the like. They have a holistic approach that includes healthy aging and also preventive care. It’s a fact of life that aging typically brings physical and mental challenges. Isn’t it good to know that geriatricians have the expertise to manage the special medical needs related to aging and also understand the support needed to maintain independence? They recognize how a health issue in an elderly patient may be very different from the same health issue in a younger person. Geriatricians are particularly adept at recognizing that older patients are more prone to side effects from drugs and are at greater risk for drug interactions. These physicians are especially knowledgeable about medications that are commonly prescribed to younger patients but are associated with more risks than benefits for older persons. Studies have identified certain meds that should be

avoided, as well as safer substitutes. I have a good example in my own family of how health problems multiply over time. First, a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. A few years later, coronary artery disease. Medications for both of those conditions became daily routine. Add osteoarthritis to the picture, along with prescription pain meds. Then, when a fracture occurs from a fall or a routine surgery is needed, everything becomes extremely complicated. Geriatricians routinely deal with such complex situations. Often, a whole support team trained in caring for aged patients comes into play. Whether a geriatric nurse, social worker, physical therapist, dietitian, or psychiatrist, all have the training and experience to meet the special needs of elderly patients. When should one consult a geriatric specialist? It actually depends more upon medical condition than age. Most geriatric patients are at least 65 years old, but some may be younger. Many people in their 70s or even 80s are quite healthy. Kudos to you or your parents if you or they are among those lucky seniors! However, by age 75 or so, many of us are dealing with two or more medical issues. It’s generally accepted that a geriatric specialist should be consulted when health or cognitive issues cause significant impairment, rendering the senior too frail for normal daily activities. When a large number of medications are being taken, often prescribed by different doctors and obtained at different pharmacies, along with over-the-counter remedies and supplements, extra management might be called for. If family members and friends are under considerable stress in the role of caregiver, it’s probably time to seek the help of a geriatric specialist. Many energetic seniors will opt for a geriatrician earlier, when health challenges begin to multiply but they wish to remain as active as possible. The number of meds may become confusing to manage. Addiction is a growing problem among the elderly, as well, and one that geriatric specialists are skilled at treating. Geriatric physicians keep us healthier and in high spirits during our senior years, when medical issues become more complex. Shouldn’t we aim for the best quality of life, remaining active and independent well into our golden years? Ask your regular doctor for a recommendation in geriatric medicine. A Massage for Every Muscle Find the Right Massage for You
By Rachel Carver, APR
It’s December. Between shopping for a growing list of gifts, making sure you don’t miss your child’s holiday program, and cleaning the house before company arrives, you will probably feel some stress this month. During this crazy time, it is important to find some relaxation. Consider rejuvenating yourself with a massage. Massage can reduce stress, pain, and muscle tension. According to the Mayo Clinic, some studies have found that massage may also be helpful for anxiety, digestive disorders, fibromyalgia, temporomandibular joint pain, and headaches. Luckily, a massage is not hard to find. This service, which used to be found only in spas, is now showing up in clinics, hospitals—even at the mall and the airport. There are several types of massage, and it’s important to select one that fits your needs. Swedish massage uses a routine of smooth, gliding strokes to gently stretch the muscles. This popular technique relaxes the entire body while giving you energy. During a deep tissue massage, therapists use slower strokes and deeper pressure on contracted areas to alleviate soreness and stiff muscles. These strokes follow the muscle line and go across the grain of constricted muscles and tendons. This massage focuses on deeper muscle layers and is often used on injured muscles. During a Thai massage, the therapist moves the client into a series of stretches that resemble yoga poses. This technique opens the joints to relieve muscle tension, allowing healing energy to flow through the body. This form of massage is typically done on a floor mat. It can improve blood circulation and increase flexibility. Shiatsu, translated as finger pressure massage, is also known as acupressure. In addition to specific pressure points, it includes stretching and breathing. Shiatsu can help with insomnia, alleviate premenstrual symptoms, and improve the flow of positive energy. Reiki can stimulate the immune system, increase energy, and relieve pain from various health conditions. This therapy uses simple hands-on, no-touch, and visualization techniques to improve a person’s energy flow. Trained practitioners can locate and alleviate physical, spiritual, and emotional energy flow imbalances. Practitioners report that this technique has been used to ease arthritis, asthma, and the recovery from surgery. If you have a chronic condition like fibromyalgia, reflexology might benefit you. Based on the idea that pressure points on the hands and feet correspond with other parts of the body, therapists apply pressure and stimulate these areas. Reflexology can increase circulation and promote specific bodily functions. A sports massage is designed to help an athlete enhance performance or recover from an injury. The strokes used are the same as in other methods, but they target a specific group of muscles to accomplish these tasks.

During an aromatherapy massage, therapeutic-grade essential oils are applied to the skin. Aromatherapy with these oils can reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and help manage pain. The active ingredients in these oils are taken directly from plants or herbs through a process known as distillation. Next, they are mixed with alcohol to preserve their strength. Because of their strong concentration, essential oils are usually combined with carrier oils like almond or coconut oil before being applied to the skin. A hot stone massage uses smooth, water-heated stones on key points of the body to relax your muscles. This gives the therapist access to deeper muscle layers. This treatment, combined with a full body massage, can provide the ultimate in relaxation. Additionally, the stones can help relieve chronic pain, reduce stress, and increase joint flexibility. A prenatal massage can be a relaxing part of prenatal care. According to the American Pregnancy Association, massages during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health. Swedish massage is the most recommended technique during pregnancy. Massage therapists who specialize in prenatal massage have customized tables that accommodate a pregnant belly. If you are trying to get pregnant, a fertility enhancing massage can be used in conjunction with treatments from your physician. Balancing the respiratory, digestive, circulatory, lymphatic, nervous, endocrine, and muscular primary systems of the body can give your reproductive system a boost. This massage can include essential oils, breathing exercises, and reflexology to stimulate hormone production. Releasing stress and improving blood flow can also help your reproductive system. Massages will help give you the energy you need to get through the busy holiday season—you just need to find the right massage for you. Some people enjoy a couple’s massage with their spouse, while others seek out their massage therapist after a busy afternoon at the office or the mall. A massage session also makes a great gift for a family member or coworker. Enjoy your holiday season! Dashing Through the Snow and Ice 10 Vehicles for Winter Driving By Julie Kuntze
If you live in an area where winter driving conditions are likely, there are some features you will want to have in an ideal vehicle—four-wheel drive, high ground clearance, and stability controls, to name a few. Luckily, these features are not hard to find. For snowy or icy conditions, all-wheel drive (AWD) or fourwheel drive (4WD), where all four wheels are pulling, is usually preferable to two- or rear-wheel drive. That said, don’t mistake “go” power for “stopping” power—look for advanced traction, braking, and stability controls to help with stopping in slippery conditions. Higher ground clearance can help get a vehicle through snowdrifts, and experts say that moderately sized tires and rims handle snow better than their extra large counterparts. Safety, fuel efficiency, and comfort in the cabin are all important factors to consider for winter driving. Here are 10 vehicles for 2018 that fit the bill and offer a little extra. Nearly every reputable list of “top winter vehicles” includes Subarus. Symmetrical AWD is standard on all Subarus. When combined with its horizontally configured engine, this creates a low center of gravity, improving traction and balance. The three SUVs (Crosstrek, Forester, and Outback) all have ground clearances of 8.7 inches and integrated roof rails to haul your winter adventure gear. They have all earned the Top Safety Pick+
rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Crosstrek is Subaru’s entry-level SUV and offers the best fuel efficiency (up to 33 mpg highway/27 mpg city) of all the vehicles on our list. The Forester is their next step up, with available amenities like windshield wiper de-icers and heated seats, steering wheel, and mirrors. The Outback feels more like a wagon, and all versions include X-Mode with Hill Descent Control (for traction) as a standard option. If you prefer to drive a car, the 2018 Legacy sedan is a good choice, with available heated seats and mirrors, windshield wiper de-icers, and remote start. It has received five of five available stars in its overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (as have most other current and tested Subarus). Toyota introduced the 4Runner 34 years ago, and it’s still a popular choice. In addition to a rear-wheel drive train, the 4Runner is also available with either a “part-time 4WD with Active Traction Control” or “full-time 4WD with Active Traction Control and Torsen limited-slip center differential with locking

feature,” according to Toyota.com. A full-size spare tire comes standard, and available options like Downhill Assist Control, heated front seats, and Integrated Navigation with Doppler Weather Overlay make the 2018 Toyota 4Runner a good choice for driving in winter weather. The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers eight separate 4WD models. With ground clearances between 8.6 and 10.8 inches, they can easily maneuver through drifted snow. Available options like the SelecTerrain Traction Management System and Selec-Trac System help drivers maneuver through winter weather conditions, while available heated seats and steering wheel keep them comfortable. The fourth vehicle in this lineup to win the IIHS’s Top Safety Pick+ award is the 2018 Volvo XC60. Standard features like AWD with Instant Traction (power is diverted to the wheels with the best grip), Hill Descent Control, and Hill Start Assist mean that this vehicle is well suited for winter driving. Luxury options include heated seats, steering wheel, and windshield wiper blades. Perhaps the largest vehicle on our list is the 4WD 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon. With a starting price of just under $52,000, it is the priciest. Still, you get a lot of bang for your buck: seating for up to nine, heated outside mirrors,
StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, and available amenities like heated seats and steering wheel. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz C-Class 4MATIC could be considered the luxury sedan that performs in all weather. Performance features like standard adaptive braking technology and its Electronic Stability Program meet next-generation technology features like its standard remote start via smartphone app, where the driver can “pre-condition” the cabin to be nice and toasty during those cold winter months. Most reviewers agree that buying a truck simply to get through snow and ice for a few months a year is overkill, but if you also happen to need additional hauling capacity or towing capability, consider the 2018 Ford F150 4x4. With available options like selectable drive modes (“snow” is one), snowplow prep, hill descent control, and heated seats, mirrors, and steering wheel, the F150 is a good choice for a winter truck. The next time the snow flies or the streets freeze, consider whether your vehicle is helping you get where you need to be, or if you should look a little closer at this list. The Good Life
Intimacy Issues? Get Your Relationship Back By Connie Keck
Why is it that some people seem to enjoy active sex lives while others struggle and shy away from intimacy? We all make excuses—we’re too tired, we’re just not in the mood, we don’t feel confident about how we look when we’re naked. No matter what reason we offer, there is usually an underlying problem that leads us to verbalize those reasons. Until that underlying issue is resolved, intimacy may continue to be a thing of the past, and you may find yourself and your partner growing apart. The most important thing to know about sexual dysfunction is simply that it happens. You are not alone! There is hope for a healthier relationship. Many trained professionals are available to help with this issue, so long as you’re willing to ask for help. What is sexual dysfunction? This refers to a problem during any phase of the sexual response cycle that prevents an individual or couple from experiencing satisfaction from the sexual activity. Men and women of all ages experience sexual dysfunction. It can happen at any time. So, what causes sexual dysfunction? There may be many underlying factors playing into the situation, but the issues often fall into one of two categories: physical or psychological. For women, physical causes may include bladder problems, heart disease, and hormone imbalance. Low estrogen levels can lead to decreased blood flow to the pelvic region. They may also contribute to the vaginal lining becoming thinner and less elastic, particularly if you are not frequently sexually active. Your body’s hormone levels also shift after giving birth and while you’re nursing, which can lead to vaginal dryness and can affect your desire to have sex. Many times, erectile dysfunction is caused by physical maladies. These may include heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, tobacco use, substance abuse, sleep disorders, prostate cancer or enlarged prostate, surgeries that affect the pelvic area or spinal cord, and certain prescription medications. Stress and mental health concerns can cause or worsen erectile dysfunction. Certain medications, including some antidepressants, blood pressure medications, chemotherapy drugs, and antihistamines can decrease sexual desire and the body’s ability to experience orgasm. Psychological and social issues that may contribute to sexual dysfunction include untreated anxiety or depression, long-term stress, or a history of sexual abuse. The worries of pregnancy and the demands of being a new mother may have similar effects. For both men and women, the complications resulting from low sexual desire or erectile dysfunction can lead to an unsatisfactory sex life, stress or anxiety, embarrassment or low self-esteem, and general relationship problems. While research suggests that sexual dysfunction is common (43 percent of women and 31 percent of
60
December 2017
men report some degree of difficulty), it is a topic that many people are hesitant to discuss. Treatment options are available, but only if you’re willing to talk about the issues you’re having. Counseling, education, communication, and open dialogue with your partner about your needs and concerns also help to overcome many barriers to a healthy sex life. Many types of sexual dysfunction can be corrected by treating the underlying physical or psychological problem. First of all, a medical examination is in order. An evaluation of the patient’s attitudes about sex and other relationship factors will help the clinician understand the underlying causes. The healthcare professional can then make recommendations for appropriate treatments that can turn individuals and couples around to start living more fulfilled lives. Treatment strategies may include medication, mechanical aids, sex therapy, behavioral treatments, and psychotherapy. When a medication is the cause of the dysfunction, a change in the medication may help. Men and women with hormone deficiencies may benefit from hormone shots, pills, or creams. Counselors and sex therapists can be very helpful to couples experiencing a sexual problem that cannot be addressed by their medical doctors. Therapists are often good marital counselors, as well. For a couple who wants to begin enjoying their sexual relationship again, it is well worth the time and effort to work with a trained professional. Behavioral treatments include various techniques, including insights into harmful behaviors in the relationship. Psychotherapy with a trained counselor can help a person address sexual trauma from the past. This may include feelings of anxiety, fear, anger, or guilt, as well as poor body image, all of which may have an impact on current sexual function. Education about sex and sexual behaviors and responses may help an individual overcome his or her anxieties about sexual function. The appropriate professional can help you to uncover the causes of your dysfunction and help to restore the intimate, loving, and caring relationship you want to have with your spouse or significant other. There’s still hope for your relationship! It is never too late to address intimacy issues. Get started today! Great Escapes
The Galapagos Islands And a Closer Alternative By Jackie Williams
Are you deciding on your next cruise destination? Have you considered the wild and natural Galapagos Islands? It’s an easy flight down to Ecuador, and then a short hop from either Quito or Guayaquil brings you to this legendary UNESCO World Heritage Site situated on and just below the equator. Wildlife abound, both above and below the water. In the Galapagos, you’re certain to take some of the best photos you will ever take. What can you expect when traveling to the Galapagos? The high seasons are June through August, and December and January. If you are a diver, you might choose to go June through November because the cooler temperatures attract more marine life. There is a national park entrance fee of $100 per adult and $50 per child, which goes toward the conservation of the park. The 19 islands that make up the Galapagos have three different ocean currents running through them, causing a wonderful variety of marine life. You might see sea lions, penguins, iguanas, the giant tortoise, whale sharks, manta rays, and a swath of birds unique to the islands, just to name a few. The display of diversity underwater makes this vacation destination a diver’s dream. The Galapagos Marine Reserve, in fact, is the second largest in the world, containing 2,800 species.

The Galapagos Islands have a lot of natural, pristine terrain that can be quite diverse (about 97 percent is declared national park). You can hike mountains, volcanos, and bays. Most of the islands are uninhabited, although you can stay in a hotel on a few of them. If you prefer to stay on land instead of on a cruise ship, have your travel agent book your room at a property close to the harbor that has its own boat so that your itinerary is seamless. Your options are basically to take a cruise and go island-hopping, stay in a hotel on the island and do day boat trips, or stay on a live-aboard boat (preferable for divers). If there is a particular animal you want to see in the Galapagos, be sure to tell your travel agent so that she can recommend the month and itinerary that will give you the best chance of spotting that species. Some are seasonal or only live on certain islands, and you don’t want to miss them. Need some other tips for traveling to the Galapagos Islands? First: Bring sturdy shoes. You will most likely be hiking widely varied terrain. Have the proper footwear so you can enjoy yourself and avoid any injuries. Second: Bring the proper camera(s). ›››

You will no doubt want to record this amazing journey. That means bringing a telephoto lens and underwater housing for your camera. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on this—consider renting what you need just for the duration of the trip. Third: Protect yourself from the sun. Wherever you live, the sunlight is likely not as direct as it is on the equator! To avoid sunburn, bring sunscreen and clothes made of dry-wicking fabrics that cover your arms and neck. Check the Ecuadorian government’s website to make sure you don’t bring any restricted items to the Galapagos; they have strict guidelines in order to protect the park and its wildlife. If you love the idea of visiting diverse landscapes and viewing amazing wildlife but don’t have the time to leave the country, you’re not out of luck—there’s a closer option. The Channel Islands National Park in California is known as “the Galapagos of North America” because of its rugged, natural landscape and terrific wildlife viewing and birding opportunities. Your travel agent can book you a flight into Los Angeles, and then you can drive up the coast to Ventura or Santa Barbara, where you catch a boat at the harbor that brings you to one of the most remote national parks in America. Consisting of five islands (Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Santa Rosa, Santa Barbara, and San Miguel), you can easily do day trips of whale-watching, kayaking, hiking, and diving. Camp, if you want to, or book a hotel on the mainland. If you go with a group, the VIP way to see the Channel Islands is an inexpensive private plane ride, complete with your own private guide for the day. It’s an easy trip to take the family during a quick holiday. To whet your appetite, take a look at the great videos available when you search “Channel Islands” on VisitCalifornia.com. Wherever you decide to go, take advantage of the opportunities to see our world in its natural habitat and the diversity of our planet’s many creatures. Bask in the beauty of the Earth. A Permanent Solution Get Rid of Unwanted Hair—For Good! By Cynthia Jeffrey
Excessive hair, unwanted hair, weird growth patterns—most of us have hair we’d like to remove from some place or another. Excessive hair growth can result from things like hormonal changes, medications, or just the hairy genes you were blessed with. Hair removal is a huge industry, and there are a lot of options these days, including shaving, waxing, plucking, and depilatories. All of these methods can get the job done, but you have to keep throwing time and money at them to stay smooth. If what you really want is safe, permanent hair removal, there’s a clear choice: electrolysis. Julie Thornton, BFA, LE, is not new to the business of hair removal. As long as she can remember, her mother provided these services to both men and women. After attending college and earning a degree in fashion design, Julie trekked to Long Beach, California, where she became certified in hair removal. Eventually, she came back to Omaha and took over A Permanent Solution. At the end of the day, Julie’s passion is helping people look their best and be comfortable in their own skin. She has witnessed the many ways that people suffer from unwanted hair growth and is pleased to be able to provide a safe alternative for hair removal. Electrolysis has been around for years, and it continues to be one of the safest alternatives for hair removal for both women and men. In Julie’s experience, when her clients have tried other hair removal options, they ultimately return to Julie for a clean, permanent solution. As Julie explains, a hair growth issue could be related to a recent change in medication, hormonal changes, or genetics. If you are experiencing a new hair growth pattern, Julie suggests that you check with your physician to make sure there are no underlying issues that need to be addressed. Julie begins each client relationship with a free consultation. At this appointment, Julie meets individually with the potential client to provide an assessment, gather a brief medical history, and discuss the person’s individual hair cycle. From the information she gleans at the consultation, Julie formulates a plan with her client that includes the areas of the body to be treated and the timing of the treatment. Because each client’s hair growth cycle is different, the length of the best course of treatment can be determined only after a complete assessment. Electrolysis involves a series of treatments over a period of time. Many hairs will be eliminated during the first treatment, but some will need two or more treatments to achieve permanency. The series of treatments also depends on the stage of development the hair is in. Hair goes through three stages: anagen (growth), catagen (intermediate), and telogen (resting). Hair in the anagen stage typically responds best to 66
December 2017
electrolysis treatment, but only about one third of a person’s hair is in the anagen stage at any given time. Electrolysis treatments are initially scheduled for every 1 or 2 weeks. Over time, less hair is apparent, and Owner Julie Thornton treatments spread out to 4 or more weeks apart. There are three different ways to perform electrolysis. Galvanic electrolysis has been utilized for more than a century. In this process, a needle is inserted directly into the hair follicle and a chemical reaction kills the follicle. With thermolysis, the needle delivers a highfrequency energy to the follicle, essentially overheating it. The blended method is, as you might guess, a blend of the two. Each method has pros and cons. Ultimately, Julie makes the decision based upon her initial assessment. The texture and placement of the hair factor into which type of hair removal is used. There are some areas of the body, like inside the nose or ear canal, for which electrolysis is not recommended. Julie is happy to discuss hair removal options for clients who have excess hair in these areas. How do her customers respond to Julie’s treatments? Very well. Diane L. shares, “I have been a client with Julie at A Permanent Solution for over 5 years and have always found a high level of professionalism. I highly recommend her services to anyone seeking electrolysis. I am so happy with the results of my sessions. Julie, you’re #1 in my book!” Client Sunny G. reports, “If you want to get rid of hair, Julie is the person. She does a great job and is very affordable. I love the online booking, too.” For more information, take a peek at Julie’s website: www.omahaelectrology.com. You can book an online consultation directly from there. You may also call Julie at 402-558-1948. Her office is conveniently located at 4910 Dodge Street, in Omaha. She looks forward to helping you look and feel your best! WE

The garden seems like a different world during December. When compared to the lush and undeniable beauty of the summer months, the winter garden can seem like a barren and lonely place. This is not so! If we watch closely, and we know where to look, we can see and understand the beauty of the winter garden. It is true that the riot of wild colors is no longer to be seen, nor is the lushness of green vines and leaves surrounding us, but there is still life and beauty to behold in the winter garden. Those of us who have gardened for any length of time understand that nature’s beauty comes in different forms and phases. The passion that possesses the summer garden becomes subdued as winter closes in, but, with the correct planning and proper care, berries and conifers (with their stunning cones!) become Mother Nature’s ornaments. Plants such as red-twigged dogwoods decorate the landscape with their unusual growth patterns, shapes, and variety of red tones. Every evergreen becomes a potential Christmas tree. With just a bit of imagination, each one could become a feeding station for birds and other garden animals. Although our bird buddies seem to be few and far between during the coldest of weather, those feathered friends who do
visit us are welcome and are, of course, always hungry. Adding feeding stations or suet balls to the landscape is not an effort at decoration, but they bring beautiful (and hungry) birds, which add their own rich colors to the garden. Strolling the garden at this time of year can serve more than one purpose. It can be an opportunity for relaxation (a favorite of many gardeners). There is no bending, twisting, or digging to be done. If your garden is more private than public, you may be blessed with the most wonderful gift of all: peace and quiet. Save time for listening to the birds and the wind as it passes through the trees. Notice how the sunlight makes patterns on the garden itself. If you have a bench in the garden, take a seat! This is a good time to be reflective. If you have trouble relaxing, bring a pencil and paper and plot out next season’s garden plan. At any

rate, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the moment. We are, all of us, constant gardeners. Though we may garden for different reasons, gardening is like any other passion— once it gets into our blood, we cannot give it up. Some of us garden as an expression of ourselves. Many of us enjoy being in nature or want to use gardening as physical activity to help us stay fit. Some of us began gardening because that’s what our mothers did. Many of our mothers had to raise vegetable gardens to feed their families. Canning and preserving are direct results of food gardening and are also popular pursuits. At one time, our garden fed our family of four, in-laws, neighbors, cousins, and food pantries around our vicinity. We canned huge amounts of food. Nowadays, with only two people to feed, our vegetable garden has been largely usurped by the growing of perennial and annual flowers. We can’t eat most of them, but we do enjoy their beauty as well as the birds and insects they encourage. Although this might seem counterintuitive, gardening is also a good way to meet people. Many new friendships have started because of plants. Exchanging information and trading plants or seeds is a good way not only to become acquainted with people but also to gain access to information. There is no gardener on this Earth who is unwilling to share experiences or gardening results with newcomers and old-timers alike. One of my favorite activities is visiting garden centers and talking with seasoned gardeners who are full of knowledge and are willing to share it with others. When the weather outside is not inviting, gardening education can still take place in the form of books and magazines, or online. There are so many opportunities to learn about what is new and successful (or what is unlikely to be successful in your area). New breeds and new plants are constantly coming into the public arena and are certainly worth trying or at least learning about. New ways to battle pests and other gardening challenges are always in development. Please enjoy these winter months as we all wait for spring to arrive once again. Keep on gardening—constantly. Editor’s Note; Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University. She lives on a small farm in western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her green-thumbed reader friends. WE December 2017

Cuddly Critters
Pet Boutiques Holiday Shopping for Your Cuddly Critter By Emily Kerr
When the days get frosty and holiday decor appears in all its sparkling splendor, shoppers find themselves looking to spoil not only their families but their furry friends, as well. If you’re the type of person who enjoys dressing your dog or clothing your cat on Halloween, you already know that the holiday season is a great time to indulge the urge to pamper your pet! This year, skip the big box stores and find something special at a local pet boutique. Seasonal clothing, toys, and specialized nutrition can be found at pet boutiques. With personalized assistance, trusted brand names, and a wide selection of nutritious food for your pet, boutiques offer the best possible options when it comes to your four-legged family member. What makes a pet boutique better than a big box store? The same things that make your favorite human boutique better than a big box store: unique selection and personal service. The staff at a pet boutique will give you the attention and assistance you need to find the best gifts, accessories, or foods for your pet. (In many cases, pets are also welcome in the shop!) Some pet boutiques offer grooming services that read more like a spa menu: facials, keratin coat treatments, tooth brushing, flat-ironing, nail buffing and polishing—you name it. You might even be inspired to schedule a treatment for yourself at your own favorite spa! No matter where you’re shopping for treats and gifts for your pet, safety is the number one priority. Here are some foods that can cause serious trouble for pets: avocado, chocolate, coffee, citrus, coconut oil, grapes and raisins, macadamia nuts, milk and dairy, nuts, onions, raw or undercooked meat, bones, and salty foods. These foods can cause anything from a sour stomach to a serious trip to the emergency room. Safety is also important when it comes to holiday decorating. Tree ornaments are designed to be eyecatching, and they can easily catch your pet’s eye, too. Don’t put lights or fragile items on the bottom branches. Also be aware that pets might try to chew on electrical cords. If you have a natural tree, it will need water, and your pets might be tempted to drink from this bowl. Make sure that it doesn’t have any poisonous preservatives in it. If your pet is a climber, make sure your tree is securely tethered. If toys are your stocking stuffers of choice, be sure that you’re buying items that are age-appropriate and safe for your pet. For example, puppies go through teething stages just like human babies, and not all toys are ideal for developing mouths. The American Kennel Club recommends hard rubber toys, hard nylon toys, or thick rope toys for teething puppies. Of course, you have to consider the quality and size of any toy—don’t give your pet a toy that’s small enough to be swallowed, and

check the toy regularly to make sure no small pieces are coming off. An interactive puzzle toy that can be filled with treats is a great choice for dogs and cats of all ages—it keeps them entertained and stimulated while making sure they don’t try to scarf down all their treats in one bite. Anyone who has lived with a squeaky toy for a significant amount of time will be pleased to hear that the American Kennel Club doesn’t recommend them—if they get chewed open, it’s easy for your pet to swallow the squeaker inside. The trend toward health and wellness in recent years is not just for people—it has spilled over into the pet industry, as well. Growing year over year in the millions of dollars, the pet industry has never been bigger or more exciting. Many pet owners consider their pets to be important members of the family, and they want the highest quality products to keep their pets living happily and healthily. It has become commonplace to show the same awareness toward our animals’ food as we do toward our own. Pet boutiques are often owned by animal lovers who feel the same way about their own pets. They use their unique product knowledge and personalized service to help their customers feel confident about the choices they’re making for their pets. When it comes to edibles, a pet boutique can be a great resource. They often carry gourmet treats (sometimes, they make their own), and the ingredient list is likely to be available. Consider a gourmet treat gift box, perhaps customized with your pup’s name. This holiday season, make a trip to a local pet boutique to learn how to pamper your furry family member. Positive Perspective
Everyone Get Happy! Bring a Smile to Your Face Every Day “Your life is supposed to feel good to you.”—Abraham Hicks Pretty simple, isn’t it? So why do we always seem to make it so difficult? Let’s get happy! I’m not denying that this time of year can be stressful; between bills, social commitments, work, family, and you know—life, being happy isn’t always at the top of our priority list. Why is it that we find it so easy to put our happiness at the bottom of our priority list rather than the top? The great thing about a mood—any mood—is that it can always be changed. In fact, we have total control over how we feel. The choice is up to us. “No matter how much madder it may make you, get out of bed forcing a smile. You may not smile because you are cheerful; but if you will force yourself to smile, you’ll end up laughing. You will be cheerful because you smile. Repeated experiments prove that when man assumes the facial expressions of a given mental mood—any given mood—then that mental mood itself will follow.” —Kenneth Goode So why not make the decision to be happy and joyful today? In fact, you may even be able to help move others into that place of happiness with you. Consider what a friendly smile to a stranger can do. One small gesture to make another person smile or laugh

can go a long way, not only for his or her well-being, but also for yours. There are lots of opportunities to choose happiness over any other emotion, yet often we do not choose it. “Even if happiness forgets you a little bit, never completely forget about it.” —Jacques Prévert Don’t get me wrong, being happy 100 percent of the time is pretty much an impossibility, and if you hold that up as your expectation, you will most likely fail. However, striving to find happiness in every day (even if it’s hidden) is something we can all do. “The really happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery when on a detour.” —Unknown So, let’s enjoy the scenery. Do at least one little thing that brings a smile to your face every day. Go sledding, throw snowballs, drink hot cocoa by the fire—whatever makes you smile. Let’s relish in the fact that we can control our mood—one of the most important things, if not the most important thing, in our lives. “The Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.” —Benjamin Franklin
