Editor’s Notes

Always Be Thankful! Welcome to our November issue, and happy Thanksgiving! It’s that time of year again! I anticipate Thanksgiving almost more than any other holiday. It means getting together with the whole family, for the whole day, and catching up and laughing with each other over what has always been my favorite meal of the year…not only to eat, but to prepare, as well. Those who know me well know that I love to cook! I love everything about fixing the Thanksgiving dinner. This meal truly takes two days to put together before it hits the table, but it is always so worth it because it is also my family’s favorite meal to eat. Everything is made from scratch, from the pumpkin pies to the cranberries. This meal is truly a labor of love for me. And after everyone is done eating, the most fantastic thing happens: They all (including my grandkids) help with the cleanup! Dishes seem to get done in record time. It always astounds me that this meal can take so long to cook and then be eaten so fast! Ahh, but the leftovers are my second favorite thing about the meal. Before we get to Thanksgiving, though, my husband has a birthday to celebrate on November 6th. Ken loves his birthday so much that he never takes just the one day to celebrate, like the rest of us. Nope—he celebrates his birthday all month long, and he lets everybody know it! I always make him his favorite birthday dinner and his favorite chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and lots of nuts. Happy birthday to my hilarious husband, Ken! We all love you so much! My older brother, also named Ken, and my husband’s little brother, Doug, also have birthdays this month. Happy birthday to you both! No, I will NOT be making your birthday dinners, but I hope you each have a fantastic birthday! The day after Thanksgiving, we always put up our Christmas tree and the decorations. That night, we watch the movie “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” This has been a longstanding family tradition, since this movie came out in 1989. Now that my children are grown, they do the same thing at their house. That’s 28 years of hilarity at Christmastime, and we never get tired of watching it! My children can quote almost every line in that movie, and we have used them throughout the years, as often as we can. They always leave us laughing. I wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving! May your day be spent laughing and catching up with loved ones. Stay safe, and be thankful!

Beautiful Fall Options Nature and Fashion Embrace Our Wardrobe! By Holly Bell

Fall is my favorite time of the year. It’s as if everything leading up to it is an appetizer and fall is the dessert! Even though we may groan a bit when the cold rushes in, we love the Midwest and its gorgeous seasons. Perfect cool temperatures, the beautiful autumn colors, and the bountiful harvest make it the best time to embrace everything, including your wardrobe! The hottest color of this season is powerful red. One of the great things about red is that there is a hue that is perfect for everyone. From brilliant orange-reds to deep wines and everything in between, everyone can wear some tone of red. Match your lip color to the tone that you are wearing to look ultra-chic. For a little drama, go for an all-over monochromatic look, or choose an unexpected accessory such as statement red boots! You will be the center of admiration wearing a red dress in a sea of black (which is always the safe choice). If you’re not comfortable in head-to-toe red, opt for an eye-popping red handbag or scarf to reveal your inner fashionista. Faux fur and leather, along with the genuine articles, continue to be popular this year. Faux leather is so hard to distinguish from the real thing, but the price difference is substantial. Leather pants, skirts, the ever-popular moto jacket, and even dresses will be fun and warm to wear this fall and winter. Fur vests will keep us warm, along with fur-trimmed everything, from gloves to jackets to hats to the especially cozy lining of coats. Designers are also having fun with details for fall 2017. Buttons are being used for decorative purposes rather than utilitarian. Buttons will embellish the sides of skirts and pants, along with other creative uses like extra buttons on your double-breasted coat. As you may have noticed in the stores, embroidery is everywhere. It embellishes the shoulders of dresses with a big red rose or is sprinkled down the front of shirts and tops. It adds an opulent detail and can be fun to wear, but I wouldn’t buy too much of this trend, as it may just be a short-lived one. Designers are crushing on velvet this season. I think everyone will embrace this trend, as it has been a while since we have enjoyed the feel of this super-soft, stretchy fabric. Feel like a star in glitter this year! As seen on television award shows, all-over glitter is glorious. If that’s too much for you, try a fabric accented with metallic thread for a slightly tamer look. Shoulder pads are coming back strong this year in coats and tailored jackets. Don’t worry—we’re not talking about “Dynasty” shoulder pads, we are talking about gentle shaping of the shoulders. Personally, I think they make a flattering silhouette on most everyone. Belts are going back to wider widths again, with a little 1980s retro feel. Belts are worn around the waist or

a little higher to accentuate the narrowest part of the body. When you think of fall, you think of plaid. That ’70s plaid is back again (we never stopped loving it!). Black and white checks in every size, done in menswear cuts, will satisfy tailored fashionistas. For the girly girl, winter florals will abound, along with lace and billowing sleeves. For the sporty woman, denim is forever, but there are new options this season for wearing this versatile fabric. Denim jumpsuits, coats, and dresses, along with the beloved denim skirt, will be among your fall choices. Who says we can’t be a tailored girl one day, a girly girl the next, and a sporty girl the day after that? Variety is the spice of life! Hemlines are longer for fall. That is not to say that you can’t still wear your short skirts with leggings and boots, but longer lengths are elegant for fall. Longer hemlines are most flattering when they fall around the calf, showing the slimmest part of the leg. Before it gets too cold, these longer skirts are perfect with bare legs and platform sandals. And you can’t beat the coziness of a long skirt worn with leggings and tall boots in the cold. You look and feel best when you are essentially YOU, whether your style is sophisticated, elegant, refined, powerful, classic, womanly, funky, glamorous, tailored, casual, or a mix of all of the above. The most important fashion secret is to feel good in what you are wearing. Your look reflects your personal style and individuality. As we welcome cooler temperatures, let’s look forward to a fresh, vibrant, and colorful fall season. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

Northpoint Aesthetics Customized Care for Individual Needs By Joan D. Dameron

Jillian Ciocchetti, MD, shares her most important goal as the owner of Northpoint Aesthetics: to make aesthetics fun, approachable, and affordable—for everyone. She and her staff work toward this goal by being well-trained, friendly, and ready to listen. A customized, patient-focused approach is always the priority. Before opening Northpoint Aesthetics, Dr. Ciocchetti focused on vein surgery. Two years ago, she was offered the opportunity to teach in a residency program. “That’s something I thought I would do in my 50s, not in my 30s,” Dr. Ciocchetti shares. With the support of her family, she sold her surgical practice to focus on teaching, but she realized that she still wanted to help patients in another way. She knows from personal experience how difficult it can be to have significant acne as an adult. “I was taught in my 30s how to take care of my skin,” she emphasizes. She saw a need to help people learn how to take care of their skin with the right products, and Northpoint Aesthetics was born. Northpoint offers a wide menu of aesthetics services, including laser treatments, Botox, and facials, as well as skin care products, a weight loss program, and hair restoration. Dr. Ciocchetti and her staff follow a three-month acne protocol for patients of all ages. Each patient brings all of the products they have been using to her appointment, and the Northpoint team helps them determine what they should continue using and what won’t work. “We are trying to get to a place without oral antibiotics or Accutane for the rest of a patient’s life,” Dr. Ciocchetti explains. What she enjoys most about aesthetics is the same thing she enjoyed most about surgery. “I am taking someone with a problem, working through it with them, and taking it to the other side,” Dr. Ciocchetti shares. The weight loss program is scientific, works on anyone, and is a positive example of her approach. She tried the program herself when she had some weight to lose after her second child was born. “I felt good and had more energy,” she recalls. She proudly states that the 50 people who have participated in the program since February have lost a combined total of 1,000 pounds. The program teaches healthy changes, including managing stress, exercise, and sleep, along with nutrition. The key to the program’s effectiveness is the support and coaching, provided by a mostly virtual community. If you start to lose your way, Dr. Ciocchetti explains, “the community pulls you back in.” She believes that her background as a general surgeon makes her viewpoint and venture into the aesthetics business unique. “I’m not doing it to meet a bottom line,” she emphasizes. “My goal is to

8

November 2017

improve the lives of other people. If I’m not making positive change, I won’t do it.” If a patient can only afford one treatment but needs three to get the results they desire, Dr. Ciocchetti urges them to save their money until all of the treatments can be completed. She wants her patients to be happy with their results. “Our skin care products are professional-grade and affordable,” she states. When it comes to anti-aging, she says, she’s not trying to turn back the clock. “Patients can see a plastic surgeon for that, if they choose. We are trying to soften things and keep them from getting worse.” Bobbie Stewart, RN, has been a nurse aesthetician for 13 years and does laser treatments, Botox injections, and facials. She assists Dr. Ciocchetti with the hair restoration procedures, which are still in the pilot stage. Bobbie likes working at Northpoint. “Dr. Ciocchetti is very warm and down-to-earth. I appreciate that, and it helps us work well together because we are both of the same mindset,” Bobbie notes. She also emphasizes the importance of complimentary consultations. “We individualize treatments, and we prioritize what is best.” Dr. Ciocchetti grew up in Arvada and has two daughters, ages one and four. How does a busy doctor, wife, mom, and teacher do it all? Dr. Ciocchetti spends about 10 hours a week at Northpoint and trusts Bobbie to do many of the treatments. “Every single day, I strive to leave the world a better place,” Dr. Ciocchetti says. “I take 30 residents and shepherd them to go out and affect the world.” Her motto carries over into her family. “My husband and I both want to teach our kids that they can make the world a better place.” Her practice is setting a good example. Northpoint Aesthetics is improving the world of each patient, one procedure at a time. Northpoint Aesthetics is located at 11150 Huron Street, #212, in Northglenn. Services are by appointment only. To schedule a complimentary consultation or an appointment, call 303-457-6710. For more information, visit www.northpointaesthetics.com. WE

Put the turkey pieces on top of the vegetables and pour in 2 cups of chicken stock. Cook on low for 6 hours. Add one box of instant stuffing (Stove Top style) and onefourth cup of butter. Cook another hour, until the stuffing is fluffy and the turkey is done. White Chicken (or Leftover Turkey) Chili In a slow cooker, stir together 2 cups of cooked cubed chicken, 1 chopped onion, 1 small can of diced green chilies, 2 cans of white navy beans (rinsed), 1 can of garbanzo beans (rinsed), 1 can of corn (drained), 1 teaspoon of cumin, 3 cups of chicken broth, and garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste. Stir and cook on low for 4 hours. Loaded Mashed Potatoes Cook 7–8 peeled and chunk-cut potatoes in boiling salted water until done (about 20 minutes). Drain and rinse in cold water. Begin mashing (use a handheld or stand mixer) and gradually add one-half to one cup of heated milk, one-half stick of butter, one-half cup of sour cream, 1 Tablespoon of chives, 2 ounces of cream cheese, and salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. Keep mashing until you like the consistency. Finish with one-half cup of grated Parmesan (optional). Editor’s Note: Kate has been an Omaha area culinary instructor since 1997. Songs of Life

Living the Music, One Song at a Time By Sharon Knierim

In movies and most television programming, dialogue and action alike are accompanied by some kind of music. It is this musical accompaniment that often sets the tone for the movie or program. At the very least, the mood of a scene can easily be expressed by the melody going on in the background. In some presentations, the music seems to be a major character itself. Sometimes, the music can exude a certain mood or emotion when a particular character is on display. In psychological thrillers and monster movies, we hear and are often entranced by tense chords signifying to us that something dreadful is about to happen…that the surprise around the corner is not going to be a happy one. Is the main character in grave danger? We cannot resist riding along on an adventure in total suspense and something close to “film fear.” Many of us watch these showings with blankets over our heads or with one eye closed. Still, we want to know what will happen next to our hero or heroine. If you are the romantic type, you may find yourself entranced by the haunting melodies of love songs and sentimental songs phrased just perfectly to make our hearts beat at an unnatural rate. This is the kind of entertainment that prompts us to grab extra tissues.

16

November 2017

Then, of course, there are those melodies which stay with us for a lifetime. These are the songs that help define who we are and how we view ourselves and others. They become a window on our world. Some songs and pieces of music help us bring back a particular memory or a particular time in our lives. Do we recall the first songs we learned in childhood? Yes, we do. They were always simple and happy songs with cheery thoughts, telling nice stories or describing lovable characters. Our first song was “Little Ducky Duddle,” and I still know all the words to it…which is quite an accomplishment for a woman who can’t remember what she did five minutes ago. Reliving our younger days of dating and courting makes us remember romantic songs, usually theme songs from a blockbuster movie such as “Love Story” or “Romeo and Juliet.” Earlier generations remember the crooners, who sang about

www.womensedition.com

human emotions and were the hit of their day. In my generation, there were plenty of anti-war songs being played on the radio and jukebox. These songs, too, are memorable, though the memories they evoke may not be our most pleasant. These songs may transport us to a time in our lives when confusion and bitterness were very common. If you like classical music, you are in good company. We are so fortunate to have with us today so many of the musical treasures from hundreds of years ago. Many of these compositions are filled with chords and melodies which later became the foundation for much of modern music. Yesterday’s rich scores can be found in many of our contemporary tunes. Music can also be a great motivator—and not just to keep us energized while we exercise. When our children were school-aged, they were terrible morning procrastinators. As I flipped pancakes and stirred oatmeal, I extemporaneously made up and belted out country and western tunes. I was not particularly fond of this style of music, and the children were even less enthusiastic. This daily practice encouraged them to hurry and got them out the door on time! Particularly engaging are the songs of the holidays, which are typically tender or silly. As we approach Thanksgiving, everyone tries to sing through “Over the River and Through the Woods” at least once. “We Gather Together” is also a song reflecting the Thanksgiving spirit and mood. Both songs remind us of the importance of being together. Of course, the ultimate in shared songs (particularly holiday songs) is the Christmas carol, which is so often sung as a group. Do you wonder how many holiday songs have been written and sung about this last great holiday of the year? The supply seems endless, and the variety makes it difficult to choose a favorite. Whether you hum or sing or whistle these musical themes, many of them inspire us to pause and take a look at the fleeting year and to remember what is good in life. Songs about hope and love and a snowman named Frosty will stay with us forever. We will never run out of songs. What we sing about is up to us, but they are always songs of life. What kind of song might be written for or about you? WE

You’re So Vein You Probably Think This Article Is About You—And It Is! By Kylie Gumpert

When our veins are functioning properly, most of us don’t give them a second thought. But for women who have experienced what happens when veins don’t function as they normally should, veins can bring a great deal of discomfort, both physical and emotional. Most of us will experience vein issues at some point in our lives, either from an underlying health condition or as a natural consequence of aging. However, there are steps you can take to prevent some kinds of vein trouble and treatments that can help solve problems that arise. According to the Office on Women’s Health, slightly more than half of American women have some type of vein problem, and problems are more likely to occur as we age. Thankfully, treatments for vein issues have become more accommodating. When vein problems cause physical pain or pose a health risk, treatment is often covered by insurance. Two of the most common vein issues are varicose veins and spider veins. In the case of varicose veins, weakening of vein walls or valves makes it more difficult to return blood to the heart, and blood may end up pooling in the veins. These veins eventually become misshapen and enlarged, protruding underneath the skin’s surface in twisted-looking coils. Varicose veins are most likely to form on the legs, and they can cause swelling, a feeling of heaviness, fatigue, and even ulcers or darkening of the skin. Spider veins are tiny, engorged veins that can be found on many parts of the body, including the face. They appear underneath the surface of the skin in a web-like formation. They can be caused by hereditary factors, injuries, or sun exposure. Sometimes spider veins can cause an itching or burning feeling, but they rarely cause serious issues. Because spider veins are more of a cosmetic issue than a medical issue, their treatment is often not covered by insurance. Varicose veins and spider veins are usually superficial veins, which lie closest to the skin and are the most susceptible to damage. Their proximity to the surface of the skin is why they are so visible, which can be frustrating but is less likely to be a threat to your health. The veins that you can’t see are the ones that are more likely to cause serious health problems. Blood clots are often a serious vein problem, especially if they end up lodged in the heart or lungs. Clots can form in superficial or deep veins, which are found in the center of the legs, arms, and hips. If a large blood clot breaks free and travels through the venous system to the heart or lungs, it can prevent blood flow to these vital organs. About 1 in 20 people will experience a deep vein blood clot (known as deep vein thrombosis) in their lifetime. When a clot moves from a deep vein and lodges in the lung, it’s called a pulmonary embolism, which can cause heart failure. The presence of clots can damage a vein’s structure and cause swelling, pain, cramps, itching,

18

and sores. If you experience these symptoms and are suspicious about what is causing them, visit your medical provider right away. It is possible to repair and correct damaged, swollen, and misshapen varicose veins, and it is possible to remove parts of veins that are no longer functioning properly. When treatment is successful, the body heals quickly and the signs and symptoms of varicose veins are often significantly decreased, if not entirely gone. As a step toward treatment for varicose veins, most insurance companies require patients to first try wearing compression stockings for a designated amount of time. These apply pressure to the lower legs to reduce swelling and improve blood flow. If the stockings do not significantly improve your symptoms, it’s time to consider procedural options. Radiofrequency ablation often targets the saphenous vein, which is the longest vein in the body and runs along the inside of the legs. The deterioration of this vein is often what leads to varicose veins lower in the leg. In this procedure, a catheter that exerts radiofrequency energy is inserted into the vein. As the catheter moves through the vein, the heat closes up the vein, bit by bit. The body then naturally reroutes blood through nearby, healthier veins. Patients are able to walk right out of the office after the procedure and will need to wear compression stockings for the next couple of days. Endovenous laser treatment is very similar to radiofrequency ablation except that the catheter inserted has a laser fiber. This exerts heat, damaging the vein and causing it to clot, effectively closing it. As with most vein treatment procedures, the patient is likely to bruise some and will need to wear a compression garment over the area for a few days but will be able to immediately get up and walk around.

www.womensedition.com

Sclerotherapy and foam sclerotherapy can close pesky varicose veins, although it may take a few weeks to see a difference, and multiple injections may be necessary. A physician will inject a solution, often salt-based, that effectively closes up the veins. The foam solution is used for larger veins. Vein stripping involves gradually removing parts of a varicose vein as opposed to sealing it off. This method is one of the oldest for treating varicose veins. It has a longer recovery time than newer methods, as well as a higher risk of adverse effects. Decreasing or eliminating the appearance of spider veins is also possible, although the procedures necessary to do this tend not to be covered by insurance. Veinwave is a newer procedure to eliminate small spider veins, even those on the face or nose. The doctor will insert a very fine needle near the spider vein, and the needle will produce focused heat that damages and destroys the vein. Patients may feel a quick prick, but there is minimal risk of scarring. Laser treatments are another option for spider vein treatment. First, the doctor numbs the treatment area. The laser then pierces the skin, heats up the vein, and causes it to clot together and close. It may take two to six treatments to eliminate the appearance of the spider vein, and it is very important to keep the treated area out of the sun until it heals. A new technique called VenaSeal is an FDA-approved system used to permanently treat varicose veins close to the surface of the skin. This procedure involves using a small amount of medical glue which is injected into the affected vein. VenaSeal does not require any immediate post-treatment pain medication or uncomfortable compression stockings. Most vein treatments have immediate or close-to-immediate

results, and patients can often resume their normal daily activities right after their procedure. Despite the success of these treatments, there is no guarantee that troublesome veins won’t continue to develop, especially because we are all more likely to develop these issues as we age. Therefore, it’s important to take steps to keep your veins as healthy as possible—whether you’ve experienced vein problems yet or not. Excess body weight can harm blood flow, so you should always get regular exercise and maintain a healthy diet. During the day, you should make sure you change positions regularly. If you spend most of the day sitting, elevate your feet every once in a while to give the veins in your lower legs a break. Wearing compression stockings can also help reduce the chances of developing varicose or spider veins. Wearing sunscreen on your face and any other exposed skin is especially important for preventing spider veins. In some cases, wearing high heels can lead to vein problems, so it may be beneficial to alternate them with different kinds of shoes. Tight clothing, especially around the waist, hips, and upper legs can also cut off circulation and damage your veins over time, if worn too often. As with any health issue, there are factors that make a person more or less likely to develop vein problems. We don’t have much control over risk factors like increasing age, family medical history, or natural changes in hormone levels, but we can definitely take steps to avoid obesity, increase physical activity, and decrease sun exposure. Help maintain healthy blood flow and improve your overall health! Enlightened Living LED Lighting Brings Out the Best in Your Home

By Robyn V. Powell

When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, it changed the world. A century later, the emergence of LED technology has brought the potential to once again fundamentally change the future of lighting. Thanks in large part to greater energy efficiency, longer bulb life, and improved quality of light, LED technology is on everyone’s radar—from homeowners to multinational corporations. Most of us are aware of LED lighting, but many of us hesitate to make the switch because we’re not sure how it differs from conventional lighting or why it may be a better choice. Let’s throw a little light on the subject to illuminate your understanding. LEDs have swept the lighting marketplace for many reasons, most notably their extended lifespans, reduced energy consumption, and lower maintenance requirements. The number one reason for choosing LED lighting is energy efficiency. LED stands for “light-emitting diode,” which is a long-lasting, highly efficient form of lighting. About 80–90 percent of the energy used by an LED bulb goes directly into light. (Compare that with incandescent bulbs, which use only 10 percent of their energy on light and waste the rest on heat.) So, how do LED lights work? As explained by Energy Star, “an electric current passes through a microchip, illuminating tiny light sources we call LEDs, and the result is visible light.” LED bulbs can provide the same amount of light as incandescent bulbs, but

they use up to 85 percent less power, helping you save on your electricity bill without compromising the amount of light. Until 2012, a large barrier to widespread adoption of LED technology was price, but increased competition and lower production costs have lowered prices and improved the consumer’s return on investment. LED bulbs are more expensive up front, but it’s a sound investment. In some cases, consumers have saved as much as several hundred dollars in just one year. The extended life of an LED bulb (30,000 to 50,000 hours versus 1,000 hours for a typical incandescent bulb) means the LED bulb is replacing many incandescent bulbs that you won’t have to purchase. Because LEDs are small and directional, they are ideal for accent or task lighting—on countertops, for example, to aid cooking and reading recipes. This type of light distribution also makes LED bulbs good choices for recessed down lights in kitchens, hallways, bathrooms, and commercial settings. Until recently, one of the biggest drawbacks of LED lighting had been color. Traditional lighting casts a warm yellow glow ›››

that early LED lights could not match. LEDs do not naturally emit white light, which is why they have only recently been used for general purpose lighting. To produce a white light, different colors of LEDs can be combined, or the LEDs can be covered with a material that changes the color. These improved technologies make current LED lighting difficult to distinguish from the familiar warmth of conventional lighting. To ensure that the lighting you choose is the right color and brightness for the intended location, consult a lighting expert. Interior designers and lighting showroom professionals are excellent resources for design application and creating lighting effects. Retrofitting conventional lighting sources to LED is possible in many instances. The dimensions of LED bulbs are similar to standard incandescent bulbs, and they can often fit in the lamps and fixtures you already have. However, LED bulbs can be heavier than incandescent bulbs, so make sure your fixture can support the additional weight. Also, some LED bulbs are not suitable for fully enclosed fixtures; check the label. You may currently enjoy the ambience created by dimming an incandescent bulb. Don’t worry—you can replicate the mood with LED bulbs, if you know which bulb to choose. Dimmer switches generally work by adjusting the amount of voltage the bulb receives, and any old incandescent bulb will do. Light-emitting diodes cannot technically be dimmed (they can only be ON or OFF), but manufacturers have worked around this problem with circuitry designed to make an LED bulb look like it’s dimming. These bulbs are generally labeled “dimmable LEDs.” If you want to use an LED bulb with a dimmer switch, these are the ones to look for. LED lights are free of toxic materials like the mercury found in most lightbulbs and are 100 percent recyclable. And since they last so much longer than incandescent bulbs, one LED bulb can save the material and production of 25 incandescent lightbulbs—a big step toward a greener planet. The future for LED lighting is bright. As competition drives the industry forward, light quality will continue to improve while energy consumption and costs will continue to drop. Check with a lighting designer about how to bring LED technology into your home. Sources for this article included: energy. gov, nema.org, and energystar.gov. WE

Good Looks

Here’s Lookin’ at You, Kid Lasting Beauty By Loretta McCollum

Today’s women lead hectic lives. Our time is precious, and we spend a significant amount of that time every day ensuring that we look our best by powdering, plumping, thickening, lengthening, defining, tweezing, and trimming. No matter how much effort we put forth, life gets in the way. We get caught in the rain, and our eye makeup turns into grimy black streaks. We nick ourselves shaving our legs and somehow manage to stain our new white blouse. We take our glasses off to apply eyeliner and realize a five-year-old could have done a better job. Frustrating, right? It doesn’t need to be. Wouldn’t it be great to wake up and look polished without having to fumble with pencils, brushes, and sponges? Permanent makeup, also known as cosmetic tattooing, allows us to do just that. It’s a process in which tinted pigment is deposited into the top skin layer by trained technicians. It can thicken, darken, and define eyebrows. Eyeliner can be permanently drawn. It’s an excellent choice for applying lip liner and lip color, helping to correct uneven lips, preventing lipstick bleeding, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles, and giving the appearance of fuller lips. It’s especially great if you’re involved in sports or have eyesight issues, unsteady hands, or cosmetic allergies. Allergic reactions to cosmetic tattooing are extremely rare—much less common than reactions to the ingredients in cosmetics. Permanent makeup can be applied by hand or with a machine. The digital rotary machine is a popular application technique. A

26

November 2017

small cartridge with needles deposits pigment into the skin at a rapid pace. It’s relatively quiet and easy to use. Some technicians may opt for a more traditional tattoo coil machine, which can result in finer lines and more precise shading techniques. This is an especially good choice for covering up scarring. In hand application, the pigment is tapped into the skin with a small instrument that resembles a utility knife but has needles instead of a blade. This technique produces a gentle, soft color. Slight irritation may occur with any of these methods, and a topical anesthetic is commonly applied to minimize any discomfort. Is it really permanent? Since pigment is tattooed into the top skin layer and can’t be washed off, it is considered permanent. However, fading does occur over time, and periodic maintenance is required to maintain the same look. Sun exposure and topical products also impact longevity. Permanent makeup lasts up to 10 years.

www.womensedition.com

For a shorter-term commitment, consider semi-permanent makeup. This involves microblading, where a technician uses a blade comprised of small needles to apply color that stays closer to the skin’s surface, fading out more quickly than a tattoo. The typical life of semi-permanent application is two to five years. Now that our eyebrows are perfectly arched and our eyeliner is flawless, what can be done about our lashes? Many women have thin lashes that not even the best onecoat mascara can fix. Welcome Latisse, the first FDA-approved product for lashes. It is also used to treat glaucoma and is available by prescription only. It improves lash length, thickness, and darkness by stimulating the growth cycle and increasing the total number of hairs. Initial results are visible after four weeks, and full results are seen at around 16 weeks. Like all medications, Latisse is associated with certain side effects. You should consult your physician or dermatologist for more information. Spray makeup is another growing trend. It works much like hairspray, setting makeup in place. Tinted spray foundations add color and can dim the glare from bright, white legs. It’s important to spray it onto a sponge first, not directly onto the skin! For the best outcome, consult a local spa or salon. To achieve the best look, you must start with a clean canvas. Electrolysis provides that canvas, removing body hair by destroying the growth center of the hair follicle through the application of electric current during several treatments. It can be used on multiple body parts, including the face, underarms, legs, and bikini area. A mild stinging sensation is typical. Electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal treatment approved by the FDA. Not all beautification procedures are new. Eyebrow threading originated in the Middle East centuries ago and is still an effective grooming practice. Threading is performed by an aesthetician using a double-stranded cotton thread, twisting it around a single hair or an entire row of hairs, and then pulling the hair out from the roots. This is less painful and much faster than tweezing or waxing, and it requires only monthly touch-ups. Less pain and less time? Sounds good to me. Looking great is easier than ever before. To learn more about these procedures, visit your favorite spa, salon, or dermatologist’s office. Sources for this article included: spcp. org, consultingroom.com, webmd.com, and goodhousekeeping.com. Out and About

Cottonwood Kennels A Staycation for Pets By Jules Marie

Cottonwood Kennels is a second home to generations of pets in Boulder County. Fondly referred to as a bed and breakfast for pets, Cottonwood has thrived since 1972 for one reason: Pets love it there. Nestled on a five-acre sanctuary bordered by farmland and a wildlife and wetland area, nearly 100 dogs—and cats, parrots, and gerbils—visit on a daily basis to socialize, make friends, play games, exercise, and have fun. Cottonwood’s co-owners Tom Bonfili and Penny Vardell are known for their unique brand of tender loving pet care. Peacocks, rooster, sheep, goats, chickens, and ducks roam freely in the pasture while a cacophony of singing birds adds to the dogs’ playful sounds. They’ve created a welcoming home-away-from-home for pets, where dogs bound through the door to greet their friends and cats revel in an indoor “cattery” with climbing trees, kitty caves, and plants. The cattery has separate play areas and deep, spacious kennels for single cats as well as a kitty corral for multiple-cat families. “Doggie daycare was invented so the dog could have a fun-filled day and then go home and relax with its owner…and so the owner could also relax with her dog,” shares Penny. “Everyone’s ready to be tucked in for the night because they’ve had a big day.” She would know! In 45 years, Penny has cared for generations of family pets. Cottonwood is known for their unique Doggie Play Care, which helps dogs socialize and keeps them active. Doggie Play Care means that dogs play together outside at least half the day. Individual play yards for dogs who need one-on-one time, pasture walks for overactive and energetic dogs, dips in the pool, or a run through an agility field all add to the fun. “We have a high staff-to-dog ratio, so if a dog doesn’t want group play, it can have individual play times or walks in the pasture,” Penny explains. “We’re happy to give that one-on-one attention that some dogs need. Most people are amazed when they come here because they’re not expecting to see all these playful, happy dogs. They have a certain idea of what a ‘kennel’ is, and they quickly see that we’re offering something different.” Manager Rhonda Bietzel has been with Cottonwood Kennels for 10 years, and she loves the energy. “You see all these people hanging out with dogs, and it feels good,” Rhonda says. “We want all dogs to be happy, and the owners, too. We want Mom and Dad feeling great when they drop their dogs off and go on their vacation.” “We communicate with owners in detail about how their dog is doing or what we’ve observed that might be helpful. We treat every animal here like our own pets,” says Penny. “Many of our clients are regulars, so we have

28

November 2017

time to develop a relationship and get to know each other well. That’s good for the dog, for the client, and for us. Clients love our willingness to go that extra mile to help a pet that has been struggling away from the family.” Pilar Heffelfinger is known as the “Small Dog Captain” and has been with Cottonwood for a decade. “I love working with dogs,” she raves. “It’s awesome! The Good Life

Boudoir Photography It’s Not What You Think…It’s Better!

By Connie Keck

Anticipation, excitement, creating memories—with the holidays around the corner, many women are trying to find unique gifts for a significant other. Tasteful and discreet boudoir photographs, taken by a professional photographer, can be a wonderful, exciting, and liberating experience for you...not to mention a stunning gift for your special someone. What is boudoir photography? The term “boudoir” has been used throughout history for various rooms used by women. The boudoir was regarded as a woman’s private space. It sometimes referred to a bedroom or, more specifically, to a dressing room or a sitting room within a bedroom. Boudoir photography, then, is bedroom photography—private photos taken of a woman in her private space. It is distinct from erotic photography in that its emphasis is on the aesthetic qualities of the photo subject and the craftsmanship of the photographic process rather than the sexually stimulating nature of the image. Many of us celebrate with our loved ones when we reach a milestone like a wedding, a promotion, a birthday, a new baby, an anniversary, or any significant goal. We acknowledge these events in many ways, like a special dessert, a gift, a vacation, a bottle of your favorite wine, or an evening out. This year, to commemorate and celebrate a major event in your life, or maybe just for fun, consider a personal, discreet, and private photo—a boudoir photo. Every woman deserves a portrait that reflects what others see already: her beauty, confidence, and strength. Having a boudoir portrait taken is about experiencing the transformation and feeling confident, empowered, and beautiful. Even if you’re not ready to share it with anyone else, this will be a photo that you can treasure for a lifetime. Have you gone through a certain surgery that has changed your body or maybe you’re a cancer survivor? Women in these scenarios may choose to have a boudoir session to embrace their bodies. Maybe you’ve experienced a significant weight loss and you’re ready to show yourself how far you’ve come in your journey. A boudoir photography session will help you become more in touch with your body and develop a whole new respect for your image. Boudoir photographers work with women of all ages, shapes, sizes, comfort levels, and experience levels. One of the most important factors to consider is the photographer that you select. Of course, you will need to choose a photographer who has experience in these kinds of photo sessions. A good boudoir photographer is professional and discreet as well as reassuring and supportive of your decision to engage in a photo session of this nature. Most importantly—if you want a great photo, you need to feel comfortable with your photographer. Prior to your session, you may want to engage any

30

number of services designed to enhance your experience and boost your confidence. Day spas are a great way to spruce up and pamper yourself with a facial, a manicure, or a pedicure. A makeover by a professional makeup artist may help you decide what kind of look you want for your photo shoot. And don’t forget the lingerie! Purchasing lovely and seductive lingerie items can be fun and exciting. It may be a fun shopping trip to take with a friend! Schedule your session well in advance of the date you need the photos completed. Some photographers require a non-refundable deposit to reserve your session. Be sure you’re familiar with their cancellation policy. Some studios provide a team of photographers and artists rather than an individual, which may impact your final cost. Photographers generally have several packages available for you to consider. But once you see your images, you may decide to purchase extra photos, and it’s a good idea to know ahead of time how much that will cost. When making an appointment, it’s best to review all the costs involved so you know what you can expect for the price you pay. The studio may have wardrobe choices for you, but many women feel most comfortable in their own lingerie and clothing. Popular options include a black lace bra and panty set, a garter belt and stockings, or a trendy lacy body suit. If the photos are to be gifts for your significant other, you might want to wear something you already know he likes…or perhaps he’d love to see you in a shirt from his favorite sports team. It really just depends on what you want to capture in your photos. Makeup and hairstyling are often offered as part of the overall cost of the photo session. Many studios will let you bring a friend along with you, if you’re feeling a little timid. Keep in mind that boudoir photographers, like all photographers, maintain portfolios of their work to show to potential clients. Because these images are so private and personal, you’ll want to find out beforehand how your privacy will be ensured if your photos might be used in this way. Go out of your comfort zone this holiday season and celebrate yourself with boudoir photography. Remember—sometimes it’s nice to be a little bit naughty. A Decade of Experiences Life Is Good I was having a conversation with some women friends the other night about how we have changed over the years. We’re all over 50, and we were reflecting on the past decades of our lives. The more we got into the discussion, the more it became apparent to me that I was sitting with a group of people who really like themselves. They like their lives and they like the future that lies before them. “I don’t like myself, I’m crazy about myself.” —Mae West Most of us have children in their 20s and 30s; some of us have grandchildren. We were remembering those decades of drama in our own lives: the relationship breakups/divorces, the deaths of family members and friends, the sleepless nights with babies, the loss of jobs we loved, and the financial hardships that we all had to face. “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” —E.E. Cummings All of us are emotionally stronger than we were in our 20s, our 30s, and even our 40s. The fascinating thing about having life experience is that it teaches us that nothing is ever as terrible as it may seem in the moment. It teaches us that every terrible situation will pass, no matter what it is.

I remember the first time that a young man who I was deeply in love with broke up with me. I was 16 years old. I thought it was the end of the world. I cried. I sobbed. I thought I would never love again. Looking back on that experience 40 years later, I laugh out loud. (As my son, Adam, says, “It’s all relative, and it depends upon your perspective.”) I am so thrilled that I did not end up with that young man. I guess the universe knew that I had asked for so much more and that there was someone a whole lot better out there. His name was Jim, and I was married to him for 33 years before his passing. “Always be a first-rate version of yourself instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.” —Judy Garland Life experience is great. I would not be the person I am today if I hadn’t had the life experiences that I have had in my life. Were some of them heartbreaking? Absolutely. Were some of them exhilarating? Thank goodness, yes! My women friends who were sitting at the table and having this amazing discussion like who they are. Life is good. I anticipate life experience will continue to head us all in this direction! “Be who you are, say what you feel. Those who mind don’t matter. And those who matter don’t mind.” —Dr. Seuss

Doing Stupid Things Doesn’t Mean You’re Stupid Get Smarter—Learn From Mistakes! It is already November! The year has flown by. Reports for the first quarter should be out, and the first semester is rapidly coming to a close. It’s a good time to take stock. How are the kids doing in school? A friend says her kids are doing some “stupid stuff.” Examples include: doing their homework but forgetting to turn it in; getting docked points because there was no name on the paper; waiting until the last minute to do a project that had been assigned weeks ago. I asked if any of those things sounded familiar…they did. As it turns out, we’ve all done stupid stuff and made bad decisions. Smart people learn from their mistakes. When the kids that I tutor complain, I remind them that school is THEIR responsibility…THEIR job. Not everyone loves their job. Smart people do their best and look for the things that make their job easier or more pleasant. Learning to put a positive spin on things helps. Still, we all make mistakes sometimes. The trick is getting our kids (and ourselves) to realize why the decision…or mistake…or action…was a bad one. Most kids are not bad, they just don’t think things through. Sometimes, facing the consequences of their decisions is the only way to find out. That’s why we say hindsight is 20/20. What are the consequences if your kids don’t earn passing grades? Are do-overs allowed? Will they be held back? When

kids get bad grades, help them figure out why. My grandson was bemoaning the fact that his grades weren’t as good as they should have been last year. “Do you know why?” I asked. He replied that one of the reasons was that he hadn’t done all the work. “What can you do about that?” I questioned. “I have to change my attitude, first,” he answered. “That’s a smart observation,” I replied. We went on to talk about personal responsibility. Kids are like horses—you can lead them to water, but you can’t make them drink. You can give the kids advice and support, but you can’t make them learn…and learning is what school is all about. Making mistakes is okay if you learn from them. In fact, trial and error is a good way to learn. Just don’t call a kid stupid for making dumb mistakes or bad decisions. He’s only human. I believe Forrest Gump was wrong when he said, “Stupid is as stupid does.” Adults make mistakes all the time, for the same reasons kids do…inattention, lack of forethought, even lack of ambition. We’re not stupid. We just do stupid things sometimes. People feel better when they get honest praise for something they’ve done. Remember, kids are people, too. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

A Green Car in Every Garage? Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Offer More Than Ever Before By Julie Kuntze

The first few hybrid and electric vehicles left a lot to be desired. Early adopters either enjoyed the novelty of ownership or were sincerely dedicated to supporting the cause; drivers sacrificed power and many of the comforts of traditional cars—and they paid a premium for it. Manufacturers have come a long way since then, improving their greenest vehicles in practically every way. Hybrid vehicles are powered by a combination of fuel and electricity. Their energy management system determines when to use electricity and when to use gasoline, often relying on electricity until the battery charge is depleted and then switching to fuel. This reduces the amount of fuel required to power the car, but there are many other benefits of hybrids, including tax breaks (available in many states), reduced emissions, lower premiums through some insurance carriers, and a higher resale value. Prospective buyers should understand the difference between traditional hybrids and plug-ins. As cars. usnews.com notes, “Traditional hybrid cars do not require a charge via electrical outlet. Their batteries gain power by charging while a vehicle uses its wheels, brakes, and engine.” A plug-in, as its name implies, requires charging downtime, plugging into an outside power source to restore its energy reserves. The first generations of hybrid vehicles were treated as novelties, often with whimsical details, and felt to some drivers more like toys than driving machines. The cockpits and interiors of 2017 and 2018 models, on the other hand, are very similar to traditional models—sleek and modern, with all the amenities and safety features drivers would expect. Buyers today have a wide range of choices when it comes to purchasing a hybrid vehicle, as nearly every major manufacturer offers at least one version. Some are simply hybrid versions of well-known models, like Toyota’s Camry or Avalon, the Honda Accord, the Ford Fusion, the Hyundai Sonata, or the Kia Optima. Others have dedicated models, including the Toyota Prius and the Chevrolet Volt. In addition to those makers, Audi, Cadillac, McLaren, Nissan, Lexus, Volvo, Mercedes, Infiniti, and Acura all offer hybrid vehicles. When enthusiasts think of electric cars, Tesla is often the manufacturer that comes first to mind. Dedicated to their mission of being a world leader in transitioning to sustainable energy, the company wants buyers to know that “electric vehicles can be better, quicker, and more fun to drive than gasoline cars.” Chevrolet, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, and Volkswagen also have electric vehicles in their consumer lineups. Over time, the overall price point for electric vehicles has lowered; as battery prices continue to drop, so will vehicle costs. New models start around $30,000, and prices are very comparable to traditional gaspowered cars.

34

November 2017

Electric vehicles (EVs) use a battery-powered motor rather than a combustion engine, making a reliable battery perhaps the most important component of the car. Most states require hybrid batteries to be warrantied for at least eight years and 80,000 miles, but manufacturers differ in their guarantees for EV batteries. Fortunately, Consumer Reports notes that they have not seen any significant issues with EV batteries in their research. As they note on their website, these batteries do require charging, and “EV manufacturers only recommend occasional quick charging, as it can potentially shorten battery life.” One of the greatest benefits of EVs is that they are energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. FuelEconomy.gov says that “EVs convert about 59 percent to 62 percent of the electrical energy from the grid to power the wheels,” compared to gas-powered vehicles, which only convert about 17–21 percent. Federal tax credits are also available for many EVs, and EVs often require less maintenance than traditional vehicles. Most EVs can be charged with either an adapter (available from the manufacturer) or a household outlet. Public charging stations are becoming more common, particularly in city centers, which is important for urban dwellers who may not have access to a home garage. Range on a fully charged battery varies widely, from less than 85 miles to more than 300, making it important to consider personal driving habits when looking at various EV models. EVs have safety features similar to those of their gaspowered counterparts (such as adaptive lighting, backup cameras, collision avoidance systems, and automatic emergency braking), and they have similar safety ratings, as well (depending on the manufacturer). Many models are geared toward families specifically, with roomy cabins, ample storage space (thanks to the absent bulky engine), LATCH attachments for child safety seats, and airbags carefully located throughout the vehicle. The hybrid and electric vehicles of today are built to appeal to even the most traditional drivers. A diverse range of vehicle types, price points, and designs means there is a green car for everyone. Expertise with a Small Town Feel Generations Family and Cosmetic Dentistry

Texts…emails…status updates…tweets—we are so connected to our digital worlds! While technology is good for many things, it can also isolate us as much as it brings us together. Sometimes, you long for a more personal connection, especially when it comes to your health providers. Generations Family and Cosmetic Dentistry offers an experience with a small town feel, going back to the days of office visits with someone you know. At Generations Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, you are treated as a person, not as a patient number. The familiar atmosphere in the office is designed to make you feel comfortable. “You will come into our office and see the same dentist, and the same hygienist, and the same office staff to help you,” says Dr. Lindsay Compton. “You will come to know our staff over time, and that will build a level of comfort as you visit. We are proud to provide that comfort.” Dr. Compton grew up in a small town in Iowa, where her mother worked in a dentist’s office. Sleep Disturbances A Real Nightmare

By KellyAnn Hanzlik

Everybody sleeps, which means everybody has an opinion about sleep. Some of them are admonishments: “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” Some of them are funny, like, “Laugh, and the world laughs with you…snore, and you snore alone,” or “People who say they sleep like a baby usually don’t have one.” It’s fun to giggle at sleep jokes, but if you have a sleep disorder, it quickly becomes no laughing matter. The Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine defines sleep disorders as “changes in the way you sleep. They result in sleep deprivation and increase your risk of injury as well as other health issues.” How many sleep disorders are there? A lot! According to the Stanford Sleep Medicine Center, there are over 100 different sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, insomnia, shiftwork or circadian disorders, restless leg syndrome (also called Willis-Ekbom disease), narcolepsy, jet lag, snoring, sleepwalking, and night terrors. Some of these are short-lived, and some of them may plague you for years. Nearly 25 percent of Americans have sleep problems, so the odds are that you know someone who struggles with sleep—and it might just be you. According to Dr. Jennifer Martin, Associate Professor of Medicine at UCLA and spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), “Getting a good night’s sleep is an important aspect of living well. Chronically poor sleep can lead to health problems, and reaching out to a board-certified sleep

40

medicine provider is the best way to get help.” The London Sleep Centre states, “A good night’s sleep is essential for our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. There is ample evidence that disturbed sleep leads to short-term and long-term detrimental effects.” Such effects can include increased risk of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Sleep deprivation can also lead to traffic accidents. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, driving while drowsy can be just as dangerous as driving while drunk. Of course, anyone who feels tired could end up driving drowsy. People who drink alcohol, take medications that cause sleepiness, work rotating or night shifts, or have some kind of sleep disorder are at higher risk of doing so. Sleep disorders have many different causes, including stress, anxiety or depression, pain and discomfort, medical conditions, medications, travel, and behaviors such as eating and drinking certain

www.womensedition.com

foods and beverages that can interfere with sleep. A sleep specialist can help determine the source and severity of the problem. Where can you get help? Talk to your doctor—and your dentist. (Dentists actually pioneered the use of oral appliances to help treat obstructive sleep apnea.) And check out the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. They set the standard and promote excellence in sleep medicine health care, education, and research, and they have a combined membership of 10,000 accredited member sleep centers and individual members. On their website, they provide a searchable database for finding sleep specialists and telemedicine options, and they’ve compiled a wealth of information, including resources for teachers. Diagnosis of a sleep disorder typically includes a consultation with a sleep specialist and maintaining a sleep diary. Your doctor may also recommend an ActiGraph, which involves wearing a watch-like device that records your activities and sleep patterns over time, or completing an overnight sleep study (polysomnography), which records various parameters, including breathing, heart rate, eye and leg movements, as well as oxygen levels and brain waves, during sleep. Treatments can include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), bright light therapy, and medications such as modafinil, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, sodium oxybate, clonazepam, and melatonin. Because the causes of sleep disorders vary widely, treatments for different disorders can be very different. If a sleep disorder is caused by an airway problem, a device may be the solution. A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device is a mask you wear while you’re sleeping. Pressurized air flows through the mask, helping to keep your airway open. You may also benefit from an oral appliance, similar to a retainer or mouth guard, that is worn while sleeping. The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine notes that oral appliances are popular because they are comfortable, quiet, portable, and easy to care for. In some cases of an obstructed airway, surgery may be required to fix the problem. If you can’t get to sleep or are experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness, don’t waste another day. Discuss your symptoms with your doctor, your dentist, or a sleep specialist, and you’ll be on your way to the good night’s sleep you deserve. Wee Travel

Seeing the World With Nancy Wee By Marty Coffin Evans

After 33 years in the travel business, Nancy Wee is still going strong, and she’s got the calendar to prove it. By land or by sea, she’s always ready to head out to a bucket-list destination— whether the list is hers or someone else’s. Earlier this fall, she had the opportunity to check Niagara Falls off her own bucket list when she took a motor coach tour with Collette Vacations to the Falls. Last summer, Nancy completed her 280th cruise, with 180 of them being on Holland America! This one was on Holland America’s Zaandam ship. Her group traveled from Copenhagen to Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland before disembarking in New York. “Holland America is a favorite for my groups because of the crew and food service,” she notes. Though she plans trips of all kinds, she particularly enjoys smaller ships. “Cruises are a wonderful way to take family members of all ages,” Nancy advises. “Many people are doing this for 50th anniversaries. Family members can do their own thing and then meet up for dinner.” Nancy’s main focus is escorting groups, and she enjoys helping her clients find just the right travel options to fit their time, interests, and budget. She has taken more than 100 motor coach tours with a variety of companies, one of her favorites being Collette Vacations. “We love traveling with Nancy,” says her client, Sharon. “She has many, many repeat customers. She has traveled so much over the years that her firsthand experience is invaluable! She does all of the work, and we just enjoy the trip.” When planning her travel calendar, Nancy begins filling in dates, times, and places near and far. Next year will begin with a January trip through the Panama Canal. The cruise leaves San Diego, travels down the Mexican Riviera to Puerto Vallarta, and goes on to Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Colombia to reach its final destination— Fort Lauderdale. After allowing a little grass to grow, she’s off again, escorting a group on a February cruise to Hawaii. Following five days of sailing (from California to Oahu), her guests have two days in Honolulu. They’ll experience Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai before returning to the mainland. Despite the lure of the seas, everyone needs some time on land. Nancy has organized a June trip to Michigan’s Mackinac Island, complete with a two-night stay at the Grand Hotel. She has included the not-tobe-missed German town of Frankenlust on the itinerary. “The biggest Christmas store is in this delightful town,” Nancy shares. Nancy has taken 50 groups to Alaska, and the destination is as popular as ever. In July, she’ll take a

group from Seattle to the 49th state on a 14-day trip. They’ll visit Kodiak, Homer, Icy Straight Point, Anchorage, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Sitka in the Inside Passage. Denali might be visible, depending on weather conditions. Although Nancy is not escorting the August trip to Iceland, she is organizing the travel to see this popular destination through Collette Vacations. “Iceland is an absolute dream trip. It’s so wonderful, even in the winter. I haven’t seen the Northern Lights yet, and I’m still looking for them,” she explains. In September, Nancy will be leading a group on the Baltic Sea. Stops on this Holland America trip include two days in St. Petersburg, then on to Helsinki and Estonia. For a relaxing and fascinating vacation, don’t forget train travel! Wee Travel has scheduled an October trip on the Canadian Rockies Railroad, departing from Vancouver, British Columbia. After disembarking in Kamloops, the group will travel by motor coach to Banff and Lake Louise before arriving in Calgary. Before all the leaves fall off the trees, Nancy will be off again, escorting a group on a Mayflower Rails and Sails trip. Nancy does a similar escorted trip on the East Coast each fall to check out the seasonal colors. Another Wee Travel tradition is offering some type of holiday trip. Next year is no different—she’ll be leading a five-day trip at Thanksgiving to New York City for the Christmas lights. Capping off the year with another of her favorite travel companies, Nancy will escort a group from Memphis to New Orleans on the American Queen in December. “On my escorted trips,” Nancy notes, “those traveling with me can do everything with me, but they don’t have to.” Frequent traveler Karen concurs, and she appreciates the service. “Nancy wants to help people so they have a good time,” Karen says. “She helps solve problems, if asked, and will serve her clients very well.” Wee Travel’s two staff members, Shirley Dyffryn and Marnee Filson, provide year-round travel assistance. They’re available at 303-465-2118 from their location at 1380 West Midway Boulevard, in Broomfield. For more information, visit www.weetravel.org. WE

Pet Grooming All You Need to Know By Kathy Glow

Good grooming is about more than just having a pretty pet. Caring for your pet’s outer appearance can help ensure that its insides are healthy, too. The best grooming is a combination of things to do with your pet at home and regular sessions with a professional groomer. The first step to good grooming involves brushing your dog or cat regularly at home, even if it has short fur. While hair balls are not usually a problem for dogs, they can cause intestinal upset in cats. When brushing your pet, check for unusual lumps or bumps on the skin. One of the first signs of illness in your pet can be a change in its coat or skin. Check your pet’s ears and eyes for any signs of infection or redness. Experts also recommend brushing your pet’s teeth at least once or twice a week, if not every day. Active cats and dogs who spend time outdoors will wear down their claws naturally by scratching and digging. However, indoor cats and dogs will need them trimmed occasionally. Some pet owners opt to trim their pet’s claws themselves, though this can be a tricky job. Be careful to trim only a little bit at a time to avoid cutting them to the quick and drawing blood. Declawing cats is a controversial practice. It involves removing not only the claw but also the little piece of bone from which the claw grows. In this procedure, the pad is also affected, causing the cat pain for several weeks. In cosmetic declawing, a tiny curved blade is used to dissect out the claw and the piece of bone. While it is an option, not many veterinarians do it, since it is not medically necessary. Declawing may be recommended when the owners would otherwise give up the cat due to destructive behavior or if the owner is immunocompromised and must avoid scratches. When it comes to the more involved stages of grooming, visiting a professional groomer will save you time and energy. Large pets, young pets, those with thick or curly coats, or pets who are resistant to handling all benefit from being groomed by a professional. The frequency with which you choose to have your pet groomed depends on a number of factors: time spent outdoors, season of the year, and length of the coat, to name a few. Most groomers recommend grooming your pet about once a month. You will need to make an appointment for grooming. Pet stores, veterinary offices, pet spas, and private groomers are all good places to take your pet. Ask friends and your veterinarian for recommendations. Be sure to clearly communicate your requests and concerns to the groomer. It might help to bring a picture of how you would like your pet to look. Many groomers require vaccination records and will most likely ask questions such as whether your pet is pregnant or nursing, takes any medications, is being treated for ticks or fleas, or has any behavioral concerns.

You can ask questions, too, about their procedures, what products they use, and the level of experience your groomer has. You can get a feel for the facility by looking at the overall cleanliness and the rapport the staff has with your pet and the other pets in their care. The groomer will get to know your dog or cat by petting it and talking to it—developing a bond. The groomer will then comb or brush out mats before bathing your pet. Be aware that sometimes she will have to cut out mats that cannot be brushed out. Then she will bathe and dry your pet. You might have the opportunity to choose extras, such as a sweetsmelling shampoo, paw balm, or special powders. The groomer will also check your pet’s ears for signs of infection and will remove excess buildup. Once dry, your pet’s coat will be trimmed, clipped, or shaved. Groomers generally trim the hair around the ears, eyes, and mouth and on the bottoms of the feet. They will trim the nails to a comfortable length. Some groomers offer nail grinding, which involves a special tool that smooths the tip of the nails in order to reduce scratching. Finally, the groomer will style your pet any way you desire. If you want bows or frills, ask and you shall receive. Another advantage of taking your pet to a professional groomer is that she can take care of the yucky stuff—anal glands, skunk spray, and removal of fleas and ticks, to name a few. Between professional grooming sessions, you can help keep your pet in tip-top shape by giving it a good brushing at least once a week, since a buildup of mats can be uncomfortable for your pet. Are You Having Any Fun? Maybe It’s Time

By Janet Van deWalle

“Over-seriousness is a warning sign for mediocrity and bureaucratic thinking. People who are seriously committed to mastery and high performance are secure enough to lighten up.” —Michael J. Gelb

to seek our joy…to follow our bliss. You can tell that by simply observing a baby or toddler. They are so excited by life! The question that most often comes out of my mouth is, “So, are you having any fun?” If you consistently answer “no” to this question, then you know you’re on the road to dullness!

So, has seriousness taken over all of us? Has our feeling tone become one of responsibility, intensity, and earnestness? Whatever happened to gaiety, lightness, joy, and fun? “Mix a little foolishness with your serious plans: it’s lovely to be silly at the right moment.” —Horace (Roman Poet) If this guy from Rome got it, what’s happened to the rest of us in the twenty-first century? I don’t know what it is about “maturing,” but all of a sudden, before we know what has happened, we’re married, we have house payments, and, more often than not, we have children who fill up that house. We go from carefree kids, adolescents, and young adults to mature, responsible, tax-paying citizens. Is this a good thing? Not if we’re grim. “A man’s maturity: that is to have rediscovered the seriousness he possessed as a child at play.” —Friedrich Nietzsche When we are born, we knew that our “job” going forth was

“Dullness is the coming of age of seriousness.” —Oscar Wilde Dullness and seriousness is a feeling tone that many of us have assumed is the adult way to behave. We have followed the perceived rule that we are supposed to be serious as we go through our lives. We find ourselves in the middle of our lives, having followed all the rules—only to arrive at a point of total, complete dullness. “If you obey all of the rules, you miss all of the fun.” —Katherine Hepburn So, maybe it’s time to break those rules—those beliefs—that we have superimposed upon our lives. Maybe it’s time to have some fun! “The average person living to age 70 has 613,620 hours of life. This is too long a period not to have fun.” —Author Unknown
