All You Need is Love! Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! I have always looked at Valentine’s Day as an opportune time to let everyone we love in our lives know how we feel. It can be romantic love, parent or grandparent love, sibling love, friendship love. Merriam-Webster defines LOVE as: strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties. I know that I have a multitude of people who I love very deeply. It’s great! I remember what Valentine’s Day was like when I was a little kid. I have five siblings, and the amount of love that flowed through our house was unlike anything I had ever seen…or have seen since. I was so blessed growing up in my family. I had the greatest parents anybody could ever ask for. My dad and mom taught me what love is by showing us love each and every day. Now, that doesn’t mean that they were “permissive.” No. We definitely had rules to follow. We all had our daily and weekly chores that had to be accomplished before we could go out and play. I admired Dad and Mom tremendously, even when I was a little kid and didn’t know what the word “admired” meant! They taught us to live by the Golden Rule, and they treated us with a love that was truly unconditional. My dad was an entrepreneur who worked his tail off. My mom had six kids in 10 years. She took care of the meals, did the shopping, and organized the cleaning. Reflecting back on my childhood, I wonder how in the world they pulled it off. My parents earned my respect every single day. I was the first one of my siblings to get married—at the ripe old age of 20! Once I was married, I saw my mom and dad in a totally different light. When I had my daughter, Carissa, when I was 23, the meaning of “Mom” changed completely. I realize now that growing up in a house so full of love was a rarity. I wish I had known then what I know now. I think I would have taken more time to show my appreciation to my parents for all that they did for us. Mom and Dad both passed in the early ’90s. I miss them every day. When Valentine’s Day rolls around each year, I take a moment to reflect on those days. I hope that, at some point in my life, I can be as great a parent as they were! Let’s make a commitment to a MONTH of love! Happy February, all. See you next month.

It’s Almost Spring…It’s Almost Spring! New Fashion Is Just Around the Corner
By Holly Bell
The new year always brings thoughts of new beginnings. Maybe this is your year to start a new business or set new goals for your existing one. Maybe this is your year for self-improvement—physically, mentally, or both. No matter what you’re planning for yourself this year, you know that you feel your best when you look your best. As you get started on the year’s goals, don’t forget to clean out your closet and update your wardrobe to be your best self! One of the most important things we can do to “spring up” our wardrobes is to add cheerful color. The Pantone Color Institute, which predicts upcoming colors for fashion and home goods, predicts that 2019 will be the year of “living coral.” Coral has long been known in fashion circles as a universal color that looks good with every skin and hair tone. Pantone describes it as “buoyant, vibrant, and effervescent.” We should expect to see a lot of coral in both home goods and fashion, as it is predicted to dominate the design industry over the next year. Surprisingly (and conveniently), it mixes well with pretty much everything—coral and blue, coral and gray, even coral and pink! Use your imagination to come up with some interesting and clever ways to work coral into your existing wardrobe. The trends coming this year fall into three general categories. Bazaar Magazine calls the first one “all dolled up.” Ruffles, layers, and frills will float around us on dresses, tops, and skirts, letting the girly girl in each of us come out of hiding. Feathers and flowers will also embellish these fanciful concoctions. Marabou will trim tops, jackets, and hemlines, bringing hints of 1950s glamour. The more practical and conservative woman in us will enjoy the year’s “down to earth” neutrals, in classic earth tones of tan, cream, and khaki. Lighter fabrics and precise tailoring will grace the sharp-looking sophisticate this season. These classics can be worn from head to toe, either in a matching look or by mixing it up, wearing several earthy neutrals together for an elegant look.
6
www.womensedition.com
On the opposite end of the spectrum will be the “bohemian.” Fringe, fishnet, layering, and wild mod patterns will let the hippie in us out for a spin. Get ready for a summer of tie-dyed shirts worn with acid-washed jeans. Another fun throwback will be the scarf print. Remember the silky and colorful designer scarf prints of the 1980s? They look fresh again this spring and fit well with the bohemian vibe. The print also serves as a great counterpoint to the neutral tailored scene. Although the color of the year will be coral, there will also be a brighter side to the color palette. Lemon or marigold yellow will be the shade of choice for many fashionistas this spring. We are sure to feel sunny when we’re wearing this mood-brightening color! Polka dots will also make a cheerful addition to our wardrobes this spring. We’ll see the classic black and white polka dot, but also some twists on the theme. Done in very artistic and creative ways, new ideas will bring freshness to the pattern. As far as casual sportswear goes, the big news is the biker short. We haven’t seen that for many a season, but it recently showed up on the runway, worn creatively for sport activities and mixing in with jackets and tops in a dressier way. The biker short was even worn with a suit jacket for the ultimate juxtaposition. Ladies will not give up on their yoga pants and activewear for comfort and ease. We just love the multi-functionality! Trends in yoga wear will be matching tops and bottoms. Think bold colors like red, black, blue, and green. For texture, velour will make an appearance in joggers and sports bras. This fashion trend is stylish and fun. Top it off with a velour pullover for the ultimate in soft comfort. Expect accessories to be bold and beautiful for the 2019 fashion scene. Dainty necklaces and classic hoops will no longer rule the runway—the statement necklace is back in a big way. Jewelry this spring will be dripping with maximalism, completely reversing the tiny trend. Rhinestones, crystals, chains, stars, coins, and oversized everything in jewelry will be a fun change. As you can tell, this spring will bring a bright, fun take on fashion. There will be something for every woman (and every different type of woman inside of each of us!). Just keep saying this to yourself: It’s almost spring…it’s almost spring…it’s almost spring! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE More information at www.cartise.com February 2019

diced chilies (optional), 1 teaspoon of cumin, and 2 teaspoons of chili powder (adjust amount, if desired). Cook on low for 3–4 hours. Add more liquid (broth, water, or beer), if desired. Serve with corn bread or garlic toast. Top with cheese, chopped green onions, and sour cream. Homemade Skillet Corn Bread Mix together 1 cup of yellow cornmeal, 1 cup of flour, 2 Tablespoons of sugar, 4 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Mix in 1 egg, 1 cup of milk, and 1/4 cup of vegetable or canola oil. Stir for a few minutes. Pour batter into a lightly greased 8-inch baking pan or a greased cast iron skillet. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the center is done. Serve with warm honey, warm maple syrup, butter, or jam. Pork Chop Casserole Blend 1 can of cream of mushroom soup, 2 cups of milk, and 1 envelope of dry onion soup mix. Pour half of the mixture into a 9x13-inch baking dish. Add 1 cup of long grain rice (not instant). Lightly sear 6 pork chops and add to the casserole. Pour the rest of the sauce on top. Cover and bake at 325 degrees for 2 hours. Uncover and bake another 15 minutes. Remove the chops from the baking dish, stir the rice and sauce, and serve. Baked Halibut Sauté 1 sliced green pepper in 2 Tablespoons of olive oil or butter for 3–4 minutes. Add 1 minced garlic clove, 1 pound of cubed halibut, and 1/2 pound of sliced mushrooms. Sauté for another 2–3 minutes. Transfer to a baking dish, cover, and bake at 325 degrees for 15 minutes. (Add a bit of chicken broth, milk, or white wine if
you think it’s getting too dry.) Salt and pepper to taste. Serve with rice pilaf or whipped garlic potatoes. Whipped Garlic Potatoes Boil peeled and cut potatoes for 20 minutes. Add 1 Tablespoon of minced garlic and 1/2 teaspoon of parsley to the potatoes. Whip with 1/2 to 1 cup of warm milk until they reach the desired consistency. Salt and pepper to taste. Touchdown Wings Put a dozen wings on a lined cookie sheet. Sprinkle salt, pepper, and garlic powder over the wings. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. While the wings are baking, mix together 1 cup of barbecue sauce, 1 Tablespoon of hot sauce, 2 teaspoons of dried oregano, and 2 teaspoons of cumin. Remove the chicken from the oven and baste the wings with sauce—if there’s any sauce left after basting, just pour it over the wings. Bake for another 25 minutes. Serve with ranch dressing, bleu cheese dressing, and carrot and celery sticks. Super Bowl Brownies Chop up a 4-ounce sweet cooking chocolate bar. Melt the chocolate and 1 stick of butter over low heat. Cool slightly, then add 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 2 eggs, 1 cup of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder, and a dash of salt. Pour the batter into a greased 8x8-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20–25 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Serve with peppermint or vanilla ice cream. Southeast Community College Affordable, High-Quality Education
By Mia Azizah
A passion for learning is one of the most significant assets in life. If you wish you had continued your formal education but feel like it’s too late to start over—forget it! It’s never too late to pursue an educational dream. Whatever your goal is, Southeast Community College can help you reach it. Southeast Community College, also known as SCC, is a vibrant, public, two-year institution of higher learning that support students from all communities and of all ages. It has an affordable variety of programs through its Lincoln, Beatrice, and Milford locations, awards, associate degrees, certificates, and diplomas. It also offers career development classes and personal interest courses. SCC caters to the needs of a wide variety of students, whether they are fresh out of high school, are returning to school after a gap year, or are changing fields entirely after a first career. Students whose goals include a four-year degree can get a great start at SCC, points out Stu Osterthun, the administrative director of public information and marketing. “A four-year degree is a good goal,” he says, “but why not go a couple of years at SCC, at a much lower tuition rate, and then transfer those credits to a four-year school?” Through the academic transfer program, students can take classes in business, education, the humanities, or social sciences, before they transition to a four-year school. Some of SCC’s pre-professional programs include pre-engineering, pre-veterinary, pre-dentistry, and pre-medicine. To make room for more students in these popular fields of study, SCC is constructing a new health sciences building that will include nursing and eleven other programs. SCC also understands that four-year degrees are not for everyone, and they’re certainly not required for all career fields. SCC’s precision machining program in Milford prepares students for careers in manufacturing, with specialties in tool-making, mold-making, and manufacturing automation. Stu notes that SCC also guides students to complete an internship or cooperative experience (co-op) in their area of study. This is just one of many opportunities that SCC offers for their students to apply their skills and attain real-world experience. “The sky is the limit,” Stu says. SCC academic advisors play an integral role in student success, helping them find opportunities that match their interests, schedules, and educational and career goals. Stu encourages students to visit with academic advisors to create a plan that will lead them to graduation and beyond. For working parents or adults who want to take on a new endeavor, the affordable continuing education at SCC provides programs that fit their schedules and passions. Programs include nursing, real-estate pre-
12
licensure training, computer and technology software training, and many more. Returning to school as an adult can feel intimidating, and the faculty members and academic advisors at SCC understand that feeling. They work closely with non-traditional students to help them make the transition back to school, find a balance between school and adult responsibilities, and align their class selections with their goals. SCC also offers non-credit courses and personal interests classes for students who are looking for a new interest or to sharpen their skills. Courses include topics like photography, floral design, arts and crafts, language learning, and specialized cooking skills. These interactive, low-pressure classes allow students to develop new skills, meet people with common interests, and have fun! At an institution like SCC, Stu shares, “everybody has a different goal.” Because students come from many different stages in life and have many different goals, success at SCC is defined differently for each student. With its affordable programs and experienced instructors, SCC successfully guides students toward their own individual goals. Starting in the fall of 2019, SCC will implement a two-semester academic calendar that will replace its current quarterly system. The new calendar will not affect the costs, but it will make it easier to arrange and transfer classes for students who are planning to continue their education at four-year schools. “The transition from a quarter academic calendar to a semester academic calendar will make my transfer to UNL much easier,” says Kylie Monti, an academic transfer student at SCC. “Certain dates and deadlines that didn’t line up with Southeast’s quarters now will, paving a smoother transfer process for me and saving me a headache.” To learn more about continuing your education at SCC, visit your preferred location on one of this spring’s Discovery Days (February 15 and April 10 in Beatrice; March 8 and April 12 in Lincoln; March 1 and April 26 in Milford). Otherwise, you can make an appointment for a campus tour by calling 402-471-3333 (Lincoln), 402-761-2131 (Milford), or 402-228-3468 (Beatrice). For more information, visit southeast.edu. WE

A Woman’s Work
Our Shortest Month 28 Days of Groundhogs and Sweethearts By Sharon Knierim
February may be the shortest month of the year, but it holds the opportunity for much activity and fun. When we were children (a long time ago), elementary school art classes featured the making of presidential profiles. Every year, we would cut out stylized profiles of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. These were always proudly mounted on bulletin boards around the room. We were not aware that there had been lots of other presidents until we advanced a few years in our education. Groundhog Day was another big occasion during the month of February. Would Phil the groundhog see his shadow, or would he be too shy or lazy to emerge from his den? We didn’t participate in any classroom gambling, but we all had a chance to speculate on whether or not we would see this furry little forecaster. The teacher would draw a line down the middle of the blackboard before giving each student the opportunity to make a prediction. Of course, there was no science to this, but at least we had a fifty-fifty chance. The losers in this contest were responsible for keeping the classroom sparkling clean for the next week. Come to think of it, maybe there was some classroom gambling, after all. February was the zenith of all things love as we celebrated St. Valentine’s Day. hearts and Cupids carrying love arrows aimed at the hearts of those about to be smitten. Hearts were cut out of red construction paper and decorated with glitter or doilies. Some of them were festooned with little bits of aluminum foil. There was always a classroom party for Valentine’s Day. We made our own valentine boxes from emptied oatmeal boxes, shoeboxes, or any container no longer being used. As Valentine’s Day approached, children would drop their cards into their classmates’ boxes. These cards would be viewed during the party, as we all looked for significant clues from secret admirers. We must have been a very romantic young generation! Treats were always served at these parties, and everyone had a good time.

Every four years, on February 29th, we would celebrate Sadie Hawkins Day, on which the girls asked the boys to a dance or party. A few overenthusiastic girls proposed marriage, which was a bit premature for seven and eight years old. Naturally, they were turned down, but I think the boys reveled in the opportunity to learn which of their female classmates were looking in their direction. Some of us girls were too shy to proclaim our admiration for any of the boys in the class; we remained silent in our devotion to them. Of course, we were all cured of the love bug by March 1st (the next day, that is), and everything was back to business as usual. As adults, we still acknowledge these important February events. We still take time to celebrate Presidents Day, but now we acknowledge these leaders with sales of all kinds and paid days off. Government offices lock their doors, and no business is conducted in them. Though we are not usually cutting out presidential profiles, we do recognize these men as important persons who made our country strong. We still take a break to see what the groundhog is doing on February 2nd. It’s a tough job, predicting how long winter will last before spring breaks through, but he does his best. He’s always in the spotlight as newscasters make a big fuss over him, and we generally have a good time with this tradition. Of course, the blockbuster for the month of February is Valentine’s Day, for children and adults alike. Once again, there is Cupid with those arrows and lots of hearts and flowers. For some folks, this is one of those days filled with stress and pressure…especially for those gentlemen who did not plan ahead. A dozen roses is a solid bet, but what color should they be? Red might be too strong, but pink roses might not give the full impact of his feelings. It’s a tough decision, and you have to make sure to get it just right. How about a big box of candy? Many women try to convince their man that they don’t want all the extra calories from that huge heart-shaped box of chocolates, but I have yet to meet a woman who turned down a box of chocolates or truffles on Valentine’s Day. For couples at more serious stages of a relationship, jewelry (and the long-term commitment it suggests) might be a better bet. No matter what Cupid brings you this year, let me wish you a very happy Valentine’s Day, and a very happy February! WE February 2019

Kitchen Remodeling Done Right Your Blueprint for Success
By Robyn V. Powell
In recent years, the kitchen has evolved from a single-purpose room, designed specifically for food preparation, to the multi-purpose hub of the home, where people meet to socialize, do homework, and, of course, cook. If your kitchen was built prior to this era, remodeling can be an exciting way to enhance your lifestyle and add value to your home, with an average return on investment of between 60 and 70 percent. Before you begin knocking down walls, however, it’s important to recognize that a kitchen is one of the most complicated remodeling jobs you can do and that living through a remodel can be disruptive and stressful. If you’re ready to make your kitchen remodeling job a reality, check out these tips to help you build the kitchen of your dreams. A well-designed kitchen should last 20 years, so experts recommend choosing a layout that works for you and your family. Consider efficiency, function, style, and longevity. One major way to keep costs down is to keep your current floor plan. Taking down walls, moving gas lines, and relocating plumbing lines and electrical connections will quickly erode your budget. If the current layout works for you, keep it! Innovative shelving can make more space in a small kitchen. Equip blind corners with double sliding shelves, where one set of shelves slides out and over to allow a second set of shelves tucked in the corner to slide forward. Another clever option is to install

two height-adjustable, kidney-shaped shelves that snake out and to the side in one fluid motion, eliminating the need to reach inside for items tucked in the rear. Cabinets make up the biggest slice of the remodel expenditure, so choose a style you love, invest in premium glides and hinges, and select attractive hardware. Choose a manufacturer that offers your preferred door style and finish as a standard option and not as an upgrade. If your cabinets are still solid and just need a fresh look, consider refacing. Refacing involves removing and replacing cabinet doors and drawer fronts and veneering the cabinet boxes. It’s much quicker and less expensive than replacing. Cabinet trends for 2019 forecast mixing things up. Subtle layering of colors like white and gray create nuanced visual interest. While the all-white kitchen remains a classic choice, pairing it with dark hardwood floors beautifully grounds all that white ›››

and enhances the cozy factor. Natural and whitewashed wood cabinets reflect a return to simplicity. Open shelving remains popular, allowing you to showcase your beautiful kitchenware and heirloom pieces. The downside is that exposed dishes collect dust, so make sure you don’t mind having to do a quick rinse prior to use. From induction cooktops to state-ofthe-art wine fridges, showy appliances are difficult to resist. Before investing in these handsomely styled showpieces, it’s wise to carefully consider your needs and weigh the pros and cons. For example, a professionalgrade range may go from simmer to sear in seconds and be built to last 20 years, but it also carries a hefty sticker price, requires a special vent hood, and can weigh over 900 pounds, requiring additional under-floor support. Opting for quality appliances that can be upgraded later, if you’re so inclined, and investing in fixed items like quality countertops makes better sense. Be sure to sure to choose your appliances first so you can build the design around the dimensions of the appliances you want. Granite and marble, with their beautiful natural veining, remain popular countertop choices, but engineered stone is becoming the preferred choice among many homeowners. Quartz offers an alternative to natural stone by offering a quarried look minus the veining. These rock-hard slabs of quartz never need to be sealed and provide a zeromaintenance and zero-worry surface. Beautiful lighting is the finishing touch to highlight a new kitchen. Choose from the latest LED recessed and task lighting for functionality and create a sparkling focal point with a pair of over-the-island pendants. Lighting stores are excellent resources with knowledgeable staff members who can guide you in making the right selections. No matter what your new kitchen will look like, assembling the right team of professionals is the best way to ensure a proper and timely installation. It takes a team with the right experience and skill to create and implement a design that works with your space and goals and stays within your budget. Professional kitchen designers and general contractors have the knowledge and expertise to make installation as seamless as possible. Keeping the stress levels that come with living through a kitchen remodel to a minimum allows you to relax and enjoy the process of creating your dream kitchen. These Feet Are Made for Walkin’ Make Sure That’s What They Do
By Loretta McCollum
The human foot has a lot of moving parts, including 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Over a lifetime, the average person will use these feet to walk over 150,000 miles— enough to circle the globe six times. Most Americans spend between four and six hours per day on their feet, so it’s no wonder that 75 percent of us report foot problems like bunions and calluses or chronic pain from conditions like arthritis, tendonitis, and flat feet. Foot problems range from injuries to inflammation and may be exacerbated by age or health conditions. Women are more likely to experience foot pain because of the simple fact that they’re more likely to wear ill-fitting footwear. Do we take care of these vital and complicated parts? Sadly, we don’t. Less than half of us actually seek treatment for our foot problems. Winter is the perfect time to address these issues! Spring will soon be here, which means increased outdoor activity and, of course, sandal weather. Chronic foot pain has many causes, including various forms of arthritis. Osteoarthritis results from a breakdown in the cartilage that cushions the bone joints. This allows the bones to rub together, causing pain and swelling. Joint damage connected with osteoarthritis may also trigger painful bone spurs. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition causing joint inflammation and pain. Treatment for arthritis can involve steroid injections, anti-

inflammatory medications, arch supports, custom orthotics, or physical therapy. Inflamed or irritated tendons in the foot and ankle can result in tendonitis, which may be the result of an injury but is typically caused by repetition of movement. Treatment may include antiinflammatory drugs, physical therapy, or surgery to lengthen or shorten the affected tendon. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, becomes inflamed. Runners and people whose footwear provide little support are more likely to develop this painful condition. Conservative treatments include rest, physical therapy, and orthotics. If such treatments are ineffective, surgery to detach the plantar fascia from the heel bone may be necessary. ›››
www.womensedition.com
The condition known as hammertoe is not only unsightly; it can be painful, as well. Hammertoe occurs when two to four toes are crossed or bent in the middle of the toe joint. Ill-fitting footwear is a common cause. Early on, shoe inserts may provide relief, but surgery may become necessary to address the deformed joint. Bunions, corns, and calluses are also in the category of foot conditions that are unsightly and may be painful. A bunion is a bony bump at the base of the big toe that causes the toe to turn inward. It may be caused by arthritis, family history, or wearing narrow shoes. Treatment ranges from custom shoe inserts to surgery to straighten the big toe and surrounding metatarsals. Corns and calluses manifest as thick, hard layers of skin. Corns usually occur at pressure points on the bottom of the foot or on the side of the toe. Hard corns are areas of dead skin with a central core, and they tend to be very painful. A callus is a thickening of the outer layer of skin and is usually painless. Either of these conditions can result from an improper gait or poorly fitting shoes. Your doctor may shave off the top of a callus and may recommend orthotics or surgery if the cause of the callus or corn is believed to be a poor walking style. A foot fungus is an irritation or infection involving a rash, itching or flaking skin, or thick and discolored toenails. Athlete’s foot is a common foot fungus that thrives in warm, moist environments like locker rooms and shower areas. It typically manifests as a scaly rash that may itch, burn, and peel. A prescription cream can generally clear it up. Toenail fungus causes toenails to become discolored, thickened, and deformed. The nail may also detach and peel away. Prescription medication or laser treatment are options to alleviate this problem. If you’re having foot trouble, a visit to a specialty foot care store or a podiatrist’s office is in order. Foot care stores utilize technology to analyze gait, pressure points, and foot shape to recommend pads, inserts, or shoe types. Podiatrists are doctors of podiatric medicine (DPM) who specialize in the foot and ankle. These physicians can prescribe custom orthotics or perform surgery to correct a variety of issues. If you need relief from foot pain, get in touch with a local podiatrist or specialty foot care store to see what they can do to help. It’s a step in the right direction! The MedSpa at Bryan LifePointe Superior Non-Surgical Body Contouring By Sarah Brown
We invest our time, energy, and money in so many different things that it’s hard to put ourselves at the top of the list. Prioritizing yourself is important, however, because the commitment you have to yourself is the longest one you will ever have. If you’ve decided to invest in a body contouring procedure, you want to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth. The MedSpa at Bryan LifePointe helps clients maximize their self-investment by providing permanent, measurable results and the confidence of being cared for at a medically-based facility. Body contouring procedures are more readily available and affordable than ever before. Even the Mayo Clinic, a facility known for treating the most serious of diseases, now has a division dedicated to medicallymanaged aesthetic services. Carrie Kleinschmidt PA-C, a MedSpa practitioner, explains, “The advantage of being part of a large health system like Bryan Health is that every service and procedure we offer is always highly researched, evidence-based, and proven to provide results before it receives the ‘stamp of approval’ to offer to the public.” Bryan LifePointe MedSpa’s medical affiliation

Fresh Concept
Dreaming of Your Dream Home? Make It a Reality! By Kylie Gumpert
Home. It’s where you spend quality time with friends and family and where you relax after a long day. It’s a space you want to love to be in! There are a lot of homes out there, and it’s smart to shop around. The truth is, not all of us can find an existing home that fits all of our needs and is perfect for our family. Sometimes, we just need to build it ourselves—along with a great team of professionals, that is! Let’s review the advantages of building a custom home and how to plan for it. With a custom home, you have control over just about everything, including defining structural features, determining the size and number of rooms, choosing special features such as a pool or theater, and promoting energy efficiency and “green” features such as rainwater capture. The only restrictions you have, really, are your budget, your time frame, and your building code or zoning limitations. Your architect and general contractors will be your guides as you learn more than you thought possible about all that goes into constructing a residence. It’s true that building a custom home is not the least expensive way to find housing. According to Home Advisor, the average custom home price tag is between $100 and $400 per square foot. Even so, a custom home doesn’t have to be a mansion! You can go custom and keep your space cozy, too, which will save money and time. Speaking of time, it can take up to six months to design the property and obtain the correct building permits, and building can take up to a year. Because building your dream home is usually going to take more time and money than buying an existing home, you want to be sure you’re ready for this commitment as well as all of the research you’ll need to do. This is the general list of steps: determine your budget, set a timeline, purchase land, make a list of features you need and want, hire an architect, hire a general contractor, hire other professionals that your general contractor didn’t handle, monitor the process, and—finally—move in! First things first: You need to determine your budget. Meeting with a financial advisor can help you figure out what kind of loans you qualify for, what kind of mortgage you want, how long it will take to pay off your new home, and if you’re comfortable with that timeline. You’ll also need to build in a contingency budget, just in case there’s an accident or the building of your home is held up in any way. Building and planning will take around 16 months or more, so don’t plan a time frame earlier than that. You do want to consider any upcoming family changes, such as having a new baby on the way or needing to be out of your current home at a certain time. The next task is exciting—choosing and purchasing your piece of land! Something to seriously consider, especially if you aren’t familiar with zoning laws, is having an architect or contractor help you decide which
26
plot is right for you. This will help ensure that you can build what you want to build on the plot you choose to purchase. Once you find a plot you’re interested in and have confirmed that it’s zoned for the kind of residence you want to build, you still need to take some other things into consideration. If it’s in a historic district, that may limit how your home can look and the materials you can use. That’s not necessarily a problem, but it’s important to be aware of any limitations in advance. You also want to look at whether the land is sloped or flat (sloped will cost more to flatten), the direction it faces, and how close the surrounding homes are, as all of these things will impact your plan. Now comes the fun part—deciding what you want your custom home to look like! Start by laying out some must-haves for design, layout, and features. Home Builder Digest suggests making a list of “needs,” “wants,” “dreams,” and “don’t wants” to get you started. You should come up with backup plans (in case something won’t work) and put together images of styles or designs that you like and that you don’t like. Think about how many rooms you want, the layout, preferred kitchen features, preferred bathroom amenities, and how important outdoor spaces are to your lifestyle. From here, think about the materials you prefer for flooring, the kind of lighting you’d like to have (including natural light from windows and skylights), and what kind of siding and roofing you prefer. Think about who will be using the space and how. Will stairs be problematic (now or in the future)? Custom cabinetry is very popular, with lots of library spaces and built-in shelving for storage and display. What about technology, such as speakers throughout your home?
www.womensedition.com
Do you want other “smart” devices that can control lighting, the thermostat, or other electronics? Hiring an interior designer can help you sort out which of the trending features you want in your home. Some current style trends, according to HGTV, include richer colors like blue or sage in the kitchen, along with copper or rose gold appliances and concrete or granite sinks and counters. In fact, bolder colors are trending throughout the house, such as jeweltoned tile, furniture, and wall colors. Open dining plans, as well as imaginative reuse or repurposing of items in a fun way, are also on the list. Better Homes and Gardens shares that sustainability, such as reusing materials and reclaiming wood, is becoming more of a priority for homeowners. “Green” design utilizes natural materials and the positioning of the windows to naturally retain heat or keep your home cool, which increases efficiency and saves on energy costs. Homeowners are also loading up on electronics, speakers, and screens for entertainment spaces. Indoor-outdoor spaces that can be used year-round, such as sunrooms, are popular. The kitchen is becoming more and more of a central hub, so that’s important to consider, if it makes sense for your family’s needs. If there’s room in your budget, you might consider hiring a kitchen or bathroom designer, as these spaces are becoming increasingly important for connection and rejuvenation. If gardens and an outdoor living space are must-haves, you probably also want to consult a landscape architect, who can help you visualize what’s possible with your space. Once you have some solid ideas about what you want and don’t want, it’s time to select the professionals who can make it
happen. When you’re building your team, it’s important to find people who are right for the job and who understand your needs. Ask for referrals from friends and family or find out which architect built a house you really love. Look for membership in the American Institute of Architects, which holds members to certain ethical standards. Be sure to review an architect’s previous work and pricing to see how those things fit with your style and your budget. Preferably, an architect will be able to offer 3-D renderings of your build, so you can better visualize it before construction begins. When the design process is underway with your architect, it’s time to find a general contractor. Many times, architects can suggest contractors they’ve worked with in the past, but you should also seek other referrals and do your own research. Talk to a contractor’s previous clients and get background on how their projects went. Ask contractors about their subcontractors—have they worked with them for a long time? You’re best off with subcontractors who have a proven track record for delivering good work on time. Monitoring the build is also paramount. Make sure that you have copies of your contractor’s insurance for your records. Your contractor will make sure that the correct permits are pulled, but you should request copies of those, too. Put inspection dates in your calendar and follow up so you know that they have taken place. If the existing homes you’re touring aren’t meeting your needs, consider a custom-built home! With the right team in place, you and your family could be living in your dream home next year! Midwest Pain Clinics Improve Your Quality of Life By Jackie Byers
For most of us, pain management amounts to aspirin for a headache, an ice pack for an athletic injury, or, in the more serious cases, two ibuprofen and rest for back pain. But what if your pain in not relieved by these tried and true methods? What happens if pain interferes with your daily activities and even impairs the quality of your sleep? Is there any hope for relief? The practice was established 24 years ago by Dr. John E. Cook. Over the years, Midwest Pain Clinics has expanded to include three additional Nebraska locations (Lincoln, Omaha and Columbus), as well as clinics in Iowa (in Missouri Valley and Red Oak) and in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota. Currently, Dr. Cook is joined by Dr. Kevin Balter, Dr. Richard Bose, and Dr. Rafal Krejza. Their team of nurses and physician assistants includes Ashley Homan, David Johnson, Stephanie Simon, and David A. Welch. Everything at Midwest Pain Clinics is designed to meet their patients’ needs, notes Dr. Nadler. “Pain comes in many forms. We help them to manage their pain and also to manage their medications.” Pain relief varies from patient to patient, Dr. Balter continues. “Sometimes, the relief comes in a matter of hours; sometimes, it’s in a week or two. Be Your Biggest Fan Love and Honor Your Own Being “There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.” —John Lennon I must admit that this quote really hits me between the eyes. I am a huge John Lennon fan, but I had never read it before. Several sentences in this quote really got me thinking. “There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love.” What a true statement. For most of us, the emotion of fear causes us to become immobilized. We can’t move forward in any area of our lives. Sometimes fear becomes so intense that all we want to do is escape. Hence, we “pull back from life.” When we are in love, it’s as if someone puts rose-colored glasses over every experience in our lives. We may come across a bad driver, but we don’t even notice. We may run into someone who is having a bad day, but, by the time we have to leave, we are both smiling. It is a wonderful thing to love.
By Janet Van deWalle
The line that affects me the most in this quote, however, is: “If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create.” Many of us might feel that loving by honoring our own being is selfish. I am not sure where we learned this, but what I have come to know through the years is that this part of Lennon’s quote is right on. If we are not our own biggest fans, we will not be able to give those in our lives whom we love the best of us. They will only get a portion of who we are. “If you doubt the virtue in self-honor, remember what the flight attendant says, ‘Put your own oxygen mask on first.’ You are of no use to anyone else if you have not taken care of your own needs first—this includes your own emotional, as well as physical, well-being.” —Jonathan Lockwood Huie John Lennon got it. He was a man who understood how important love is in the world. He also understood that without loving and honoring ourselves, we will not be the incredible, deliberate creators that we came forth to be. This Valentine’s Day, let’s give ourselves the best gift possible… the love and honor of our own being…and then we can begin to spread it around! WE

Do We Help Our Kids Too Much? Be a Guide on the Side We all love our kids, but do we help them too much? We try to keep them from harm, but do we stop them from taking chances? We want them to make decisions, but do we plan every aspect of their lives? If we solve all our kids’ problems, do we rob them of the ability to develop necessary coping skills? What do they learn, if we do everything for them? These questions came up recently over coffee with some neighbors. Sally complained that Johnny was always forgetting something...his lunch, his homework, his ball glove…it was always something. She wondered whether she should rescue him by delivering the forgotten item or let him face the consequences, hoping it would spur him to be more mindful. JoAnn worried about how much she should help Susie with homework and school projects. She asked if it was better to show her how or just be available if Susie had a question. “It seems like Susie has the most trouble getting started, especially on projects. Should I make a plan of attack for her or let her do it?” she asked. Margaret told about the time her son came home and obviously had been in a fight. “I asked Mark what happened,” she said. “He muttered something and went to his room. I’m in a quandary over how to handle it.” She sighed and recalled Mark mentioning something about bullies at school. A lengthy discussion about parental responsibility ensued. We talked about just how much responsibility we should take in
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
situations like these. We agreed that our reactions and responses should be partially determined by the kid’s age…the younger the child, the more parents should do, while still including the kids in choosing a solution. Asking, “How can we solve this problem?” met the consensus. The group came to the conclusion that, in general, when our children experience problems, whether with school work or relationships, it isn’t too helpful for us to step in and solve the problems. We decided that asking the kids what they thought should be done and then helping them come up with several solutions was the most helpful reaction. After brainstorming possible solutions for a couple of minutes, go over them together. We agreed that some unacceptable solutions might be mentioned, but that all should be carefully considered. The kids will usually know what is acceptable and what isn’t. The idea is to let the kids come up with their own solutions, with our guidance. Be a guide on the side rather than taking over. That way, we give the kids a chance to build the confidence to make their own decisions on ways to solve problems. Most people don’t want someone telling them how to solve their problems. Kids are people, too. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Take Care of Your Furry Friends The Advantages of Professional Grooming By Brie Christensen
Americans love having pets, and more of us are becoming pet owners all the time. According to a recent survey of American households conducted by the American Pet Products Association, approximately 47 million households own cats and roughly 60 million households own dogs. As more people take on the joy and responsibility of pet ownership, it’s become even more evident how vital it is for individuals to understand the vast benefits that professional pet grooming offers to both cats and dogs. While pet owners might think they can save money by accomplishing the task on their own, home grooming doesn’t always go well—pets sometimes end up needing a professional groomer to fix the damage from a disastrous home grooming session. Starting with professional grooming can save owners a lot of hassles, including time, energy, and stress. Routine visits to the same groomer can also bring the advantage of a regular caretaker for pets—regular groomers can sometimes catch physical concerns that owners don’t know to look for and can refer pets for treatment before the condition gets worse. How do you find a great groomer? Experts say it’s important to first seek referrals from veterinarians or other pet owners and to research different groomers and the services they offer. It’s important for pet owners to explore their options in order to discover the right route for their individual animal. Some professionals even specialize in grooming select breeds of pets! Dog grooming should typically be done monthly. More frequent grooming may be needed for specific breeds or for puppies or animals that are still becoming familiar with the process. The American Kennel Club notes that dog groomers are trained professionals who have all of the necessary tools, shampoos, and experience to get the task done. Most dog groomers start by brushing, bathing, and then drying the animal. Once the pet is dried, professionals trim, clip, or shave the dog’s fur, as requested by the owners. They also clean the dog’s ears and check for signs of infection during the visit. Trimming nails and brushing teeth are also generally offered. Cats spend a lot of time grooming themselves, and this convinces many cat owners that cats can handle their own grooming needs. This is not necessarily true. Professional grooming is still needed for cats to achieve proper health and hygiene—in fact, experts say that regularly scheduled cat grooming is just as important as regularly scheduled dog grooming. Regular sessions allow professionals to check for parasites, lumps, and other symptoms or concerns that owners might overlook, especially if cats are often left to their own devices when it comes to grooming. Much like professional dog grooming, a cat grooming visit can involve bathing, trimming, clipping, and even tooth cleaning. After a professional grooming visit,

owners can expect cats to have fewer hairballs, less matting of the fur, and a generally fresher smell. While regular professional grooming is recommended, owners are also directed to care for their dogs and cats in between appointments by brushing their teeth and bathing them when needed. Pet owners who live in areas of the country with cold winters need to address some special considerations when having their pets professionally groomed during the winter months. After all, one purpose of an animal’s fur is to keep the animal warm—taking too much fur off during grooming can leave an animal unnecessarily vulnerable to the cold. However, leaving too much fur on pets may lead to matting or other issues. Owners should check with their pet’s veterinarian to find out what level of grooming will work best for each individual animal. In recent years, the demand for mobile pet grooming has increased. Many people like the idea of groomers coming to them, instead of having to drop pets off at a traditional grooming salon and then pick them up later in the day. Along with convenience, mobile grooming can provide a more personal touch, while offering a calmer experience than pets might get at a grooming station inside a large facility. In fact, some groomers are even starting to offer house calls. In-home grooming has become increasingly popular recently, as many customers like to watch or stay nearby during their furry friend’s appointment. The familiar, comfortable environment may lead to ease of mind for pets, too. In the end, whether owners choose to visit a brick and mortar shop or have a professional come to them, owners who choose professional pet grooming are making a wise decision and putting their animal’s health first. Menopause Makeover Strategies for Wellness By Janette Calabro
Musicals and movies and books have been written about it—lots of them. Why, then, does menopause remain a mystery? Though we have a lot in common, every woman’s journey through menopause is unique. Your best friend might handle menopause with a jaunty sense of humor, laughing at the latest menopause blog. You, on the other hand, might prefer the dynamics of a support group or rely heavily on the vast knowledge and sage advice of your OB-GYN. Resources for navigating the “change of life” are endless. There are private Facebook sites devoted to women who want to share with a support group. Maybe you prefer a serious discussion with your physician about hormone levels, help from a dietician to improve your diet, or sessions with a personal trainer. Of course, a consultation with a mental health practitioner might help with all the ups and downs. Many women agree that a combination of all of the above is the best education and treatment for menopause. Sex hormone levels naturally decrease as women age, and the ovaries eventually stop releasing eggs, which means that menstruation ends. Twelve months after your period stops permanently, menopause is said to start. There appears to be some link between when menstruation starts and when it ultimately ends. For example, one study states that a menstruating 11-yearold is more likely to start menopause prematurely, before she reaches 40 years, as opposed to a girl who starts her period at age 13. The average age for women in the United States to hit menopause is 52 years. Are you headed toward menopause? It doesn’t happen all at once. A woman’s body transitions over several years. Common symptoms include hot flashes, vaginal dryness, irregular bleeding, insomnia, and incontinence, along with mood extremes that might include depression and anxiety. The production of hormones is complicated—too much is bad for us, and too little doesn’t work, either. For example, insomnia may be related to insulin production or weight gain. Reducing sugar and alcohol in your diet may have a positive outcome against night sweats and can lead to better sleep. A consultation with your physician about your hormone levels is a sensible choice. Prescription medications such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT), a combination of estrogen and progesterone (or only estrogen, if you don’t have a uterus), is one option to help reduce hot flashes and night sweats. HRT may even help prevent osteoporosis. Bioidentical HRT consists of hormones that are chemically identical to the hormones that your body produces. These are available commercially but are often obtained from compounding pharmacies, where medications are created for individual patients. Like all medications, HRT comes with side effects, and it’s not
for everyone. Your doctor can help assess the risks and benefits to determine if HRT is best for you. Nontraditional remedies are great alternatives for treating both mind and body, if prescriptions aren’t your cup of tea. Though many methods are not clinically proven to work, they have helped many women navigate the troublesome symptoms of menopause, and they might help you, too. Night sweats disrupting your sleep? Try black cohosh, soy, or flaxseed. Topical vitamin E helps vaginal dryness. Acupuncture may help correct hormone imbalances. While studying the long list of natural alternatives, consider that the jury is still out on their effectiveness. In addition, natural supplements are not regulated in the same way as prescription medications, and they may interact with each other (or with prescriptions you’re taking). Talk to your doctor before taking a supplement. If mood swings and sleep disruption are your primary symptoms, try a yoga class or anything aerobic. Exercise reduces irritability—combined with meditation and deep breathing, the benefits multiply. During menopause, metabolism slows down, which makes dieting a tempting choice. However, low-calorie diets alone may decrease muscle mass. Instead of dramatically cutting calories, try cutting out some carbs and watching each meal’s portion size. Reduce your chances of bone loss and osteoporosis by getting 30 minutes of physical activity most days, and don’t forget to add resistance training to your regimen. Of course, a cold drink without caffeine or alcohol might squash those hot flashes instantly (fan optional). Try a glass of cold water or antioxidant-infused fruit juice. Forgetfulness, trouble focusing, and irritability sneak their way into daily life during menopause. Tackle these symptoms by staying socially and mentally active. Now is the time to join that hiking club, dive into a second language, or ballroom dance your way into a new life (don’t forget to bring your partner along for the ride!). There’s lots of good news along the menopause journey! Remember that healthy lifestyle choices are key to getting the best out of this phase of your life. Positive Perspective
Dare To Dream Make A Dream Collage for 2019 Here we are, into the second month of 2019. Maybe you’re sticking with your New Year’s resolutions, maybe you’re not. Perhaps you gave up on New Year’s resolutions years ago. Instead of all of this angst, do you want to have some fun? “Set a goal SO BIG that you can’t achieve it until you grow into the person who can.”—Unknown In years past, I most likely would have suggested writing down these big goals and reading them every night before going to bed. Visualizing them. Feeling them. Pretending they were yours. This year? Let’s just make a dream collage. Like I said, let’s have some fun! “A dream collage is pictures of your goals. It is like your future photo album.”—Bo Bennett The first step is to get a large art board, some glue, and a very large stack of magazines. Take a few hours to look through the magazines, cutting out the pictures that appeal to you. Want a new car? Find a picture of your dream car and cut it out. (Make sure it is exactly the one you want…same color, exact model, and so on.) Want a baby (or grandchildren)? Find the cutest baby pictures and cut them out. Want a new house? Same routine. Looking for that perfect relationship with a significant other? Find pictures of the
36

happiest couples you have ever seen. Want a killer body? Those won’t be hard to find…after all, we are looking through magazines! Next step? Take that board and that glue and make a collage of your dreams. “Your goals, minus your doubts, equal your reality.”—Ralph Marston When you are satisfied with your dream board, the next step is the most difficult one. Put it away. Hide it under your bed. Don’t look at it. Don’t think about it. Resist the temptation to revisit it. LEAVE IT ALONE. This may feel counterintuitive. After all, shouldn’t there be some struggle involved here? Some action that has to be taken in order to make it all happen? “The easiest way to grow, is to let go. Knowing that someone else is managing the show.”—Unknown What happens next? At the end of 2019, dig out this dream collage. Look at it. See what has manifested. If you are like most people who play this game, you will be truly amazed at how many of these dreams have manifested. It’s not all there yet? Well, if you are like most of us, you will have grown and changed this year. Update your dream collage. Stick it back under your bed. Take a look at the end of 2020. Let me know how it works! WE
