All You Need is Love! Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! I have always looked at Valentine’s Day as an opportune time to let everyone we love in our lives know how we feel. It can be romantic love, parent or grandparent love, sibling love, friendship love. Merriam-Webster defines LOVE as: strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties. I know that I have a multitude of people who I love very deeply. It’s great! I remember what Valentine’s Day was like when I was a little kid. I have five siblings, and the amount of love that flowed through our house was unlike anything I had ever seen…or have seen since. I was so blessed growing up in my family. I had the greatest parents anybody could ever ask for. My dad and mom taught me what love is by showing us love each and every day. Now, that doesn’t mean that they were “permissive.” No. We definitely had rules to follow. We all had our daily and weekly chores that had to be accomplished before we could go out and play. I admired Dad and Mom tremendously, even when I was a little kid and didn’t know what the word “admired” meant! They taught us to live by the Golden Rule, and they treated us with a love that was truly unconditional. My dad was an entrepreneur who worked his tail off. My mom had six kids in 10 years. She took care of the meals, did the shopping, and organized the cleaning. Reflecting back on my childhood, I wonder how in the world they pulled it off. My parents earned my respect every single day. I was the first one of my siblings to get married—at the ripe old age of 20! Once I was married, I saw my mom and dad in a totally different light. When I had my daughter, Carissa, when I was 23, the meaning of “Mom” changed completely. I realize now that growing up in a house so full of love was a rarity. I wish I had known then what I know now. I think I would have taken more time to show my appreciation to my parents for all that they did for us. Mom and Dad both passed in the early ’90s. I miss them every day. When Valentine’s Day rolls around each year, I take a moment to reflect on those days. I hope that, at some point in my life, I can be as great a parent as they were! Let’s make a commitment to a MONTH of love! Happy February, all. See you next month.

It’s Almost Spring…It’s Almost Spring! New Fashion Is Just Around the Corner
By Holly Bell
The new year always brings thoughts of new beginnings. Maybe this is your year to start a new business or set new goals for your existing one. Maybe this is your year for self-improvement—physically, mentally, or both. No matter what you’re planning for yourself this year, you know that you feel your best when you look your best. As you get started on the year’s goals, don’t forget to clean out your closet and update your wardrobe to be your best self! One of the most important things we can do to “spring up” our wardrobes is to add cheerful color. The Pantone Color Institute, which predicts upcoming colors for fashion and home goods, predicts that 2019 will be the year of “living coral.” Coral has long been known in fashion circles as a universal color that looks good with every skin and hair tone. Pantone describes it as “buoyant, vibrant, and effervescent.” We should expect to see a lot of coral in both home goods and fashion, as it is predicted to dominate the design industry over the next year. Surprisingly (and conveniently), it mixes well with pretty much everything—coral and blue, coral and gray, even coral and pink! Use your imagination to come up with some interesting and clever ways to work coral into your existing wardrobe. The trends coming this year fall into three general categories. Bazaar Magazine calls the first one “all dolled up.” Ruffles, layers, and frills will float around us on dresses, tops, and skirts, letting the girly girl in each of us come out of hiding. Feathers and flowers will also embellish these fanciful concoctions. Marabou will trim tops, jackets, and hemlines, bringing hints of 1950s glamour. The more practical and conservative woman in us will enjoy the year’s “down to earth” neutrals, in classic earth tones of tan, cream, and khaki. Lighter fabrics and precise tailoring will grace the sharp-looking sophisticate this season. These classics can be worn from head to toe, either in a matching look or by mixing it up, wearing several earthy neutrals together for an elegant look.

On the opposite end of the spectrum will be the “bohemian.” Fringe, fishnet, layering, and wild mod patterns will let the hippie in us out for a spin. Get ready for a summer of tie-dyed shirts worn with acid-washed jeans. Another fun throwback will be the scarf print. Remember the silky and colorful designer scarf prints of the 1980s? They look fresh again this spring and fit well with the bohemian vibe. The print also serves as a great counterpoint to the neutral tailored scene. Although the color of the year will be coral, there will also be a brighter side to the color palette. Lemon or marigold yellow will be the shade of choice for many fashionistas this spring. We are sure to feel sunny when we’re wearing this mood-brightening color! Polka dots will also make a cheerful addition to our wardrobes this spring. We’ll see the classic black and white polka dot, but also some twists on the theme. Done in very artistic and creative ways, new ideas will bring freshness to the pattern. As far as casual sportswear goes, the big news is the biker short. We haven’t seen that for many a season, but it recently showed up on the runway, worn creatively for sport activities and mixing in with jackets and tops in a dressier way. The biker short was even worn with a suit jacket for the ultimate juxtaposition. Ladies will not give up on their yoga pants and activewear for comfort and ease. We just love the multi-functionality! Trends in yoga wear will be matching tops and bottoms. Think bold colors like red, black, blue, and green. For texture, velour will make an appearance in joggers and sports bras. This fashion trend is stylish and fun. Top it off with a velour pullover for the ultimate in soft comfort. Expect accessories to be bold and beautiful for the 2019 fashion scene. Dainty necklaces and classic hoops will no longer rule the runway—the statement necklace is back in a big way. Jewelry this spring will be dripping with maximalism, completely reversing the tiny trend. Rhinestones, crystals, chains, stars, coins, and oversized everything in jewelry will be a fun change. As you can tell, this spring will bring a bright, fun take on fashion. There will be something for every woman (and every different type of woman inside of each of us!). Just keep saying this to yourself: It’s almost spring…it’s almost spring…it’s almost spring! Combine 1 cup of prepared barbecue sauce, 1 Tablespoon of hot pepper sauce, 2 teaspoons of dried oregano, and 2 teaspoons of ground cumin. Remove the chicken from the oven and pour the sauce over the top. Bake for another 30 minutes or until done. Bean Dip for a Crowd Mix a large package (8 ounces) of softened cream cheese with 1 cup of sour cream, 2 cans of refried beans, and 1 packet of taco seasoning. Sprinkle with 2 cups of shredded jack cheese and 2 cups of grated sharp cheddar. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes, until cheese is melty. diced chilies (optional), 1 teaspoon of cumin, and 2 teaspoons of chili powder (adjust amount, if desired). Cook on low for 3–4 hours. Add more liquid (broth, water, or beer), if desired. Serve with corn bread or garlic toast. Top with cheese, chopped green onions, and sour cream. Homemade Skillet Corn Bread Mix together 1 cup of yellow cornmeal, 1 cup of flour, 2 Tablespoons of sugar, 4 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Mix in 1 egg, 1 cup of milk, and 1/4 cup of vegetable or canola oil. Stir for a few minutes. Pour batter into a lightly greased 8-inch baking pan or a greased cast iron skillet. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the center is done. Serve with warm honey, warm maple syrup, butter, or jam. Pork Chop Casserole Blend 1 can of cream of mushroom soup, 2 cups of milk, and 1 envelope of dry onion soup mix. Pour half of the mixture into a 9x13-inch baking dish. Add 1 cup of long grain rice (not instant). Lightly sear 6 pork chops and add to the casserole. Pour the rest of the sauce on top. Cover and bake at 325 degrees for 2 hours. Uncover and bake another 15 minutes. Remove the chops from the baking dish, stir the rice and sauce, and serve. Baked Halibut Sauté 1 sliced green pepper in 2 Tablespoons of olive oil or butter for 3–4 minutes. Add 1 minced garlic clove, 1 pound of cubed halibut, and 1/2 pound of sliced mushrooms. Sauté for another 2–3 minutes. Transfer to a baking dish, cover, and bake at 325 degrees for 15 minutes. (Add a bit of chicken broth, milk, or white wine if
you think it’s getting too dry.) Salt and pepper to taste. Serve with rice pilaf or whipped garlic potatoes. Whipped Garlic Potatoes Boil peeled and cut potatoes for 20 minutes. Add 1 Tablespoon of minced garlic and 1/2 teaspoon of parsley to the potatoes. Whip with 1/2 to 1 cup of warm milk until they reach the desired consistency. Salt and pepper to taste. Touchdown Wings Put a dozen wings on a lined cookie sheet. Sprinkle salt, pepper, and garlic powder over the wings. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. While the wings are baking, mix together 1 cup of barbecue sauce, 1 Tablespoon of hot sauce, 2 teaspoons of dried oregano, and 2 teaspoons of cumin. Remove the chicken from the oven and baste the wings with sauce—if there’s any sauce left after basting, just pour it over the wings. Bake for another 25 minutes. Serve with ranch dressing, bleu cheese dressing, and carrot and celery sticks. Super Bowl Brownies Chop up a 4-ounce sweet cooking chocolate bar. Melt the chocolate and 1 stick of butter over low heat. Cool slightly, then add 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 2 eggs, 1 cup of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder, and a dash of salt. Pour the batter into a greased 8x8-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20–25 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Serve with peppermint or vanilla ice cream. Faces Spa Leave It All Behind By Emilee Lindley
At Faces Spa of Omaha, their goal is “to transport you to another place, where you leave all the stress and difficulties of life at the door.” In 2019, they are meeting this goal, and then some! Faces has long provided relaxing beauty treatments like nail services, massages, and facials. They have recently entered the medical spa realm, as well, to better serve their patients who desire a more dramatic cosmetic change without the cost and risks of surgical procedures. Turn to Faces for the treatments that can give you the boost you’re looking for in this New Year. All the staff members at Faces are passionate about the work they do and believe their treatments are essential to overall well-being. This spa is not somewhere that you go just to relax, leaving an hour later, after a little nap. Faces has a results-driven team of professionals who will help you make a serious change toward the best you that you are trying to be. Owner Dan Nedved reflects on the Faces philosophy of “providing the very best services for the best possible results on an individual basis. We want to do that in a comfy and relaxing atmosphere, with the very best products and a very professional and well-trained staff.” What does it mean to make the experience individualized or custom in a spa setting? Simply put, staff members always consult with their clients before beginning any treatments. Specific services are not scheduled until after this consultation, so staff members can talk to clients and see them in person before recommending treatment. This personal approach is how they achieve the best results. Mother of five and Ironman competitor Kristin Chronic-Wetzel was an emergency room nurse before coming to work at Faces. Kristin has been with the spa since 2003 and has been instrumental in creating a medical spa program that balances a great spa aesthetic with a strong, professional, medical side. She is dedicated to creating “a way of finding what is going to make people feel better about themselves from a physical standpoint and will also be great for their well-being.” The experience at Faces is different than at most medical spas, Kristin explains, because “it is more of a spa experience than other places. This is because we offer a full range of services, from body treatments to dermablading, from fillers and Botox to chemical peels.” That range of services also includes waxing, facials, additional resurfacing treatments, eyelash and brow enhancements, manicures and pedicures, microneedling, body sculpting, and, of course, massage!

Faces has a strong massage therapy program, with multiple therapists and tons of experience. Therapist Kelley Steiger has 21 years of massage experience—18 of which were spent at Faces. It sounds like a love story, and it’s one that all of her clients benefit from. Kelley specializes in deep tissue massage directed at pain management. She strives to find the exact reason that you are on her massage table, pinpoint the problem, and then keep it in line and in check through routine massage. “People’s lives are hard, and people hurt,” Kelley notes. “That’s why I do what I do.” Debra Larson, another massage therapist at Faces, points out that “everybody’s body is different. I try to rid people of stress and pain, while finding the right mix of modalities to help the body on my table. I strive to improve the overall well-being of my clients and tap into their own personal needs. My goal is to ensure that each of my clients can live a happier, healthy life with the addition of massage.” Faces has been in Omaha for a long time—in fact, it’s the oldest day spa in town. It is grounded in good spa practices, effective treatments, and experienced staff. It’s also still grounded in its old neighborhood! Before moving to its current location at 84th Street and West Center Road, Faces was located in Countryside Village. The spa still partners with one of its old neighbors, Village Grinder, by serving a light lunch from the coffee shop as a part of the Faces “Day of Beauty” spa package. Dan is pleased with the growth that Faces has experienced over the last decade. “People want to do what they can to look and feel better, and we’ve got that covered all the way around,” he says. “We are passionate about what we do.” Whether you’re looking to make a subtle cosmetic improvement, make a more dramatic change, or find a solution to chronic pain, Faces Spa is somewhere that you can find a smiling face to pamper you in whatever way you wish. Look no further, Omaha—your spa awaits you! Faces Spa is located at 2605 South 84th Street, in Omaha. You can reach them at 402-384-8400 or at facesspa.com. WE

Enjoy time with your loved ones this month! Aries (Mar 21–April 19) You will have a few changes in your life, and that is acceptable! Indulge in some time to yourself, and don’t be afraid of feeling alone. Your loved ones will always support you. Taurus (Apr 20–May 20) Traveling abroad will be excellent for those who are pursuing the meaning of life. Your determination will help you achieve your higher goals! Gemini (May 21–Jun 20) Engage in opportunities that bring out the mysterious side of you. You are feeling adventurous and daring. This might be the time in your life when you indulge in the unknown!

A Woman’s Work
Our Shortest Month 28 Days of Groundhogs and Sweethearts By Sharon Knierim
February may be the shortest month of the year, but it holds the opportunity for much activity and fun. When we were children (a long time ago), elementary school art classes featured the making of presidential profiles. Every year, we would cut out stylized profiles of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. These were always proudly mounted on bulletin boards around the room. We were not aware that there had been lots of other presidents until we advanced a few years in our education. Groundhog Day was another big occasion during the month of February. Would Phil the groundhog see his shadow, or would he be too shy or lazy to emerge from his den? We didn’t participate in any classroom gambling, but we all had a chance to speculate on whether or not we would see this furry little forecaster. The teacher would draw a line down the middle of the blackboard before giving each student the opportunity to make a prediction. Of course, there was no science to this, but at least we had a fifty-fifty chance. The losers in this contest were responsible for keeping the classroom sparkling clean for the next week. Come to think of it, maybe there was some classroom gambling, after all. February was the zenith of all things love as we celebrated St. Valentine’s Day. As amateur artists, everyone drew or fashioned

hearts and Cupids carrying love arrows aimed at the hearts of those about to be smitten. Hearts were cut out of red construction paper and decorated with glitter or doilies. Some of them were festooned with little bits of aluminum foil. There was always a classroom party for Valentine’s Day. We made our own valentine boxes from emptied oatmeal boxes, shoeboxes, or any container no longer being used. As Valentine’s Day approached, children would drop their cards into their classmates’ boxes. These cards would be viewed during the party, as we all looked for significant clues from secret admirers. We must have been a very romantic young generation! Treats were always served at these parties, and everyone had a good time.

Every four years, on February 29th, we would celebrate Sadie Hawkins Day, on which the girls asked the boys to a dance or party. A few overenthusiastic girls proposed marriage, which was a bit premature for seven and eight years old. Naturally, they were turned down, but I think the boys reveled in the opportunity to learn which of their female classmates were looking in their direction. Some of us girls were too shy to proclaim our admiration for any of the boys in the class; we remained silent in our devotion to them. Of course, we were all cured of the love bug by March 1st (the next day, that is), and everything was back to business as usual. As adults, we still acknowledge these important February events. We still take time to celebrate Presidents Day, but now we acknowledge these leaders with sales of all kinds and paid days off. Government offices lock their doors, and no business is conducted in them. Though we are not usually cutting out presidential profiles, we do recognize these men as important persons who made our country strong. We still take a break to see what the groundhog is doing on February 2nd. It’s a tough job, predicting how long winter will last before spring breaks through, but he does his best. He’s always in the spotlight as newscasters make a big fuss over him, and we generally have a good time with this tradition. Of course, the blockbuster for the month of February is Valentine’s Day, for children and adults alike. Once again, there is Cupid with those arrows and lots of hearts and flowers. For some folks, this is one of those days filled with stress and pressure…especially for those gentlemen who did not plan ahead. A dozen roses is a solid bet, but what color should they be? Red might be too strong, but pink roses might not give the full impact of his feelings. It’s a tough decision, and you have to make sure to get it just right. How about a big box of candy? Many women try to convince their man that they don’t want all the extra calories from that huge heart-shaped box of chocolates, but I have yet to meet a woman who turned down a box of chocolates or truffles on Valentine’s Day. For couples at more serious stages of a relationship, jewelry (and the long-term commitment it suggests) might be a better bet. No matter what Cupid brings you this year, let me wish you a very happy Valentine’s Day, and a very happy February! WE

Vantage Point
Omaha Hypnosis Center Achieve Lasting, Positive Change By Sarah Brown
What do Tiger Woods, Albert Einstein, Ellen DeGeneres, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Shaquille O’Neal, and Princess Diana all have in common? Each one of them has used hypnosis or hypnotherapy to overcome bad habits or challenges, to make changes to improve their quality of life, or to achieve great success. Over the years, Omaha Hypnosis Center has helped thousands of local clients do exactly the same thing. Smoking cessation, stress relief, and weight loss are all attainable with the assistance of hypnosis from owners and therapists Jeff and Devan Martin. Hypnosis is a relaxed state of consciousness. As a form of treatment, hypnosis has developed over the last two centuries into the clinically applicable form available at Omaha Hypnosis Center today. Jeff and Devan have a combined experience of over 40 years within their field, and they have helped thousands of people. Some people shy away from hypnosis treatment because they’re afraid of losing control. “One of the biggest misconceptions people have about hypnosis is that we, the hypnotists, are controlling clients while they’re hypnotized,” notes Devan. “That’s just not possible. The client is always in control and fully aware of everything going on the entire time.” Hypnosis is not mind control by a hypnotist. Rather, it is a method of training the mind to create automatic reactions that will eliminate the negative habits or thought patterns that keep us stuck in unhealthy cycles of undesirable behavior. Through hypnosis, a therapist can help clients identify the responses or outcomes they have unconsciously programmed to any number of stimuli. Once these automatic responses have been identified, they can be adjusted—this is done with guided imagery and visualization. Who is hypnosis for? “Hypnosis is for anyone who wants to make a change,” Jeff says. Quite often, people coming to hypnosis to quit smoking or lose a lot of weight are doing so as a last resort, and Jeff reports that many of their clients are delighted to finally achieve success. “Hypnosis works,” he says. “It ends up being the only thing that has ever worked for many of the clients we have—and it works faster, easier, and more economically than anything else they tried over the years.” Jackie Adams, one of Jeff’s current clients, decided to finally try hypnosis to quit smoking. “I’m actually amazed,” she shares. “I really didn’t think it would work because I’d already tried so many things. But after just one session, I don’t even want to pick my cigarettes up. Cigarettes are suddenly ‘icky’ to me! I didn’t think it would work that quickly. I’m more relaxed, and even my dogs are happier, because I’m paying more attention to

them at home instead of smoking.” Clients at Omaha Hypnosis Center begin their journey to personal success with a complimentary meeting to communicate the problems they’re facing and outline their treatment goals. At this introductory meeting, Jeff performs a free hypnosis screening to determine whether hypnosis is likely to be an effective treatment option for the client. “We’re 100 percent honest. If we determine that hypnosis is not right for you, for whatever reason, we’ll tell you that up front,” he states. Once individuals pass the initial screening and become clients, they start their treatment program. All the programs offered at Omaha Hypnosis Center were designed using proven scientific principles as well as extensive study and trial. Clients seeking smoking cessation or weight loss as their goal embark with their therapist on an organized, step-by-step, individuallycustomizable curriculum. This program combines in-office hypnotherapy sessions with “homework” to be engaged in outside of the clinical setting as therapy reinforcement. Every client is taught self-hypnosis to lessen the likelihood of regressing or relapsing into problem behaviors. The commitment that clients receive from Omaha Hypnosis Center is what makes it truly stand apart from other treatment programs. If clients feel that they’re slipping back into old, undesirable habits after they complete the program, Jeff and Devan guarantee to offer reinforcement sessions of their hypnosis services at no additional charge. Omaha Hypnosis Center also has a policy of capping their fees for those participating in their treatment programs. “We evaluate your problem and then assess a fee,” Jeff explains. “Once the fee is paid, there are absolutely no more additional session charges. We stay with the problem until you are happy.” If you’ve tried to rid yourself of bad habits but find yourself stuck in a rut, it’s time to see what hypnosis can do for you. Omaha Hypnosis Center is located in Suite 325 at 11414 West Center Road. To schedule your free consultation and hypnosis screening, call 402-502-9334. Fresh Concept
Dreaming of Your Dream Home? Make It a Reality! By Kylie Gumpert
Home. It’s where you spend quality time with friends and family and where you relax after a long day. It’s a space you want to love to be in! There are a lot of homes out there, and it’s smart to shop around. The truth is, not all of us can find an existing home that fits all of our needs and is perfect for our family. Sometimes, we just need to build it ourselves—along with a great team of professionals, that is! Let’s review the advantages of building a custom home and how to plan for it. With a custom home, you have control over just about everything, including defining structural features, determining the size and number of rooms, choosing special features such as a pool or theater, and promoting energy efficiency and “green” features such as rainwater capture. The only restrictions you have, really, are your budget, your time frame, and your building code or zoning limitations. Your architect and general contractors will be your guides as you learn more than you thought possible about all that goes into constructing a residence. It’s true that building a custom home is not the least expensive way to find housing. According to Home Advisor, the average custom home price tag is between $100 and $400 per square foot. Even so, a custom home doesn’t have to be a mansion! You can go custom and keep your space cozy, too, which will save money and time. Speaking of time, it can take up to six months to design the property and obtain the correct building permits, and building can take up to a year. Because building your dream home is usually going to take more time and money than buying an existing home, you want to be sure you’re ready for this commitment as well as all of the research you’ll need to do. This is the general list of steps: determine your budget, set a timeline, purchase land, make a list of features you need and want, hire an architect, hire a general contractor, hire other professionals that your general contractor didn’t handle, monitor the process, and—finally—move in! First things first: You need to determine your budget. Meeting with a financial advisor can help you figure out what kind of loans you qualify for, what kind of mortgage you want, how long it will take to pay off your new home, and if you’re comfortable with that timeline. You’ll also need to build in a contingency budget, just in case there’s an accident or the building of your home is held up in any way. Building and planning will take around 16 months or more, so don’t plan a time frame earlier than that. You do want to consider any upcoming family changes, such as having a new baby on the way or needing to be out of your current home at a certain time. The next task is exciting—choosing and purchasing your piece of land! Something to seriously consider, especially if you aren’t familiar with zoning laws, is having an architect or contractor help you decide which
20
February 2019
plot is right for you. This will help ensure that you can build what you want to build on the plot you choose to purchase. Once you find a plot you’re interested in and have confirmed that it’s zoned for the kind of residence you want to build, you still need to take some other things into consideration. If it’s in a historic district, that may limit how your home can look and the materials you can use. That’s not necessarily a problem, but it’s important to be aware of any limitations in advance. You also want to look at whether the land is sloped or flat (sloped will cost more to flatten), the direction it faces, and how close the surrounding homes are, as all of these things will impact your plan. Now comes the fun part—deciding what you want your custom home to look like! Start by laying out some must-haves for design, layout, and features. Home Builder Digest suggests making a list of “needs,” “wants,” “dreams,” and “don’t wants” to get you started. You should come up with backup plans (in case something won’t work) and put together images of styles or designs that you like and that you don’t like. Think about how many rooms you want, the layout, preferred kitchen features, preferred bathroom amenities, and how important outdoor spaces are to your lifestyle. From here, think about the materials you prefer for flooring, the kind of lighting you’d like to have (including natural light from windows and skylights), and what kind of siding and roofing you prefer. Think about who will be using the space and how. Will stairs be problematic (now or in the future)? Custom cabinetry is very popular, with lots of library spaces and built-in shelving for storage and display. What about technology, such as speakers throughout your home?
www.womensedition.com
Do you want other “smart” devices that can control lighting, the thermostat, or other electronics? Hiring an interior designer can help you sort out which of the trending features you want in your home. Some current style trends, according to HGTV, include richer colors like blue or sage in the kitchen, along with copper or rose gold appliances and concrete or granite sinks and counters. In fact, bolder colors are trending throughout the house, such as jeweltoned tile, furniture, and wall colors. Open dining plans, as well as imaginative reuse or repurposing of items in a fun way, are also on the list. Better Homes and Gardens shares that sustainability, such as reusing materials and reclaiming wood, is becoming more of a priority for homeowners. “Green” design utilizes natural materials and the positioning of the windows to naturally retain heat or keep your home cool, which increases efficiency and saves on energy costs. Homeowners are also loading up on electronics, speakers, and screens for entertainment spaces. Indoor-outdoor spaces that can be used year-round, such as sunrooms, are popular. The kitchen is becoming more and more of a central hub, so that’s important to consider, if it makes sense for your family’s needs. If there’s room in your budget, you might consider hiring a kitchen or bathroom designer, as these spaces are becoming increasingly important for connection and rejuvenation. If gardens and an outdoor living space are must-haves, you probably also want to consult a landscape architect, who can help you visualize what’s possible with your space. Once you have some solid ideas about what you want and don’t want, it’s time to select the professionals who can make it
happen. When you’re building your team, it’s important to find people who are right for the job and who understand your needs. Ask for referrals from friends and family or find out which architect built a house you really love. Look for membership in the American Institute of Architects, which holds members to certain ethical standards. Be sure to review an architect’s previous work and pricing to see how those things fit with your style and your budget. Preferably, an architect will be able to offer 3-D renderings of your build, so you can better visualize it before construction begins. When the design process is underway with your architect, it’s time to find a general contractor. Many times, architects can suggest contractors they’ve worked with in the past, but you should also seek other referrals and do your own research. Talk to a contractor’s previous clients and get background on how their projects went. Ask contractors about their subcontractors—have they worked with them for a long time? You’re best off with subcontractors who have a proven track record for delivering good work on time. Monitoring the build is also paramount. Make sure that you have copies of your contractor’s insurance for your records. Your contractor will make sure that the correct permits are pulled, but you should request copies of those, too. Put inspection dates in your calendar and follow up so you know that they have taken place. If the existing homes you’re touring aren’t meeting your needs, consider a custom-built home! With the right team in place, you and your family could be living in your dream home next year! There is something special about finding someplace with a small-town feel in the middle of a bustling metropolis. In a time when people are rushing from appointment to appointment and schedules are full, it is a gift to walk through the doors of Specialty Dental Care. When you step inside, it feels as though time stops for you. At the front desk, Mary greets you with finesse and treats you like a lifelong friend. Next, you meet Dr. Tim McVaney, who begins the conversation with a joke, laughing at himself as he tells it. Dr. McVaney says he is known for his “crazy ties and bad jokes,” but his patients appreciate him for much more. His sense of calm, his patience, and his ability to explain every procedure put his patients at ease. He takes the time to develop a trusting relationship with each patient, which is essential for the best patient care. If you look back upon his career, you can see that Dr. McVaney was meant to be in this field. His father and uncle were dentists, and Dr. McVaney learned

Over the years, he has been involved with many special interest and advocacy groups, and he has been on the front line to ensure that everyone receives proper dental care. After all, he points out, everyone has a smile, and he doesn’t want anyone to lose theirs. He believes that every tooth matters, and he will do what he can to ensure that teeth are cared for properly. dental practitioners. He is renowned for his ability to start at the beginning of a situation, empower the patient with information, and work until a solution is found. Dr. McVaney works with each patient to achieve the best possible outcome. According to his reviews, his patients appreciate his approach. “Excellent, professional care,” reads one review. “Dr. McVaney and his staff do an excellent job. No problem is too big! I will always highly recommend Specialty Dental.” Because Dr. McVaney works with patients of all ages, he often has the privilege of following patients throughout their lives. He explains that his goal is “to teach you to take care of your issues at every age.” Your dental needs change as you age…he’ll help you with one issue in your 20s and an entirely different issue when you turn 40. One of his favorite stories is of a 90-year-old patient who got dental implants so she could enjoy her cruise without fear of losing her teeth! As long as patients can be transported to him, Dr. McVaney can improve their dental comfort. “I first started coming to see Dr. McVaney 36 years ago,” says patient Phyllis. “He is a fine periodontist and has become a really good friend. He makes you really feel like you’re part of the family.” A stroll through the clinic with Dr. McVaney offers a brief history of dental care. He proudly displays his father’s memorabilia, as well as dental tools from days gone by. These outdated tools sit in sharp juxtaposition to the up-to-date surgical rooms and cutting-edge laboratory equipment he uses in his practice. It is easy to see that Dr. McVaney keeps up with his education and adapts to new dental technology as it becomes available. He loves that he can explain procedures to his patients with digital images, as this provides another avenue to educate people about dental procedures and the importance of ongoing dental care. Services at Specialty Dental Care include treatment for periodontal disease, dental implants, aesthetic procedures, tooth extraction, and more. Mid Plains Podiatry Legacy of Quality Foot Care By VJ Walsh
Mid Plains Podiatry is recognized by their patients for providing the highest level of foot and ankle care. They have recently completed building out their new clinics to accommodate their growing practice. The clinic is now located on the northwest corner of 108th and Maple. The new Mid Plains Podiatry has doubled the size of the previous clinic to include the latest in diagnostics, surgical, and exam space. Mid Plains Podiatry was founded by Dr. Elizabeth Klawitter, DPM, in 2008 to carry on the family legacy of quality foot care. Dr. Klawitter’s father, Dr. Paul Klawitter, was an Omaha podiatrist for over 33 years. He specialized in minimal incision surgery, which prompted Elizabeth to follow in his footsteps. She is now a board-certified podiatrist and also a fellow in minimal incision foot surgery (FAAFAS). She also specializes in nerve entrapment in the feet. In addition to her practice at Mid Plains Podiatry, Dr. Klawitter is on staff at the Omaha Surgical Center, Advanced Surgery Center, and Boys Town National Research Hospital. Dr. Nathan Penney, DPM, joined the practice in 2017. He is a native of Nebraska and moved back to Omaha after 15 years being away from the “Good Life.” Dr. Penney specializes in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery. He is one of only a few surgeons in the United States who is trained to perform total ankle replacement surgery. Dr. Penney continues his education and stays on top of his game by learning and training on new surgical techniques. He shares his expertise by presenting research at conferences and has had multiple articles published. He has also written a textbook that helps podiatrists prepare for their board certification. Dr. Klawitter and Dr. Penney believe that the best patient care is reached by treating each patient as an individual. They begin by getting to know each patients’ conditions, needs, and lifestyle. This helps them tailor an individualized treatment program for each patient. They take the extra time to explain the problem and possible solutions. It is important to both of the doctors that their patients are included in and understand the treatment plan. Their patients appreciate this educational approach. One patient review stated, “Dr. Klawitter was very personable, and I left feeling like I finally had a good explanation for the reasons that my back issues could be attributed to the pain in my foot.” Dr. Klawitter and Dr. Penney try to begin with a conservative approach, if possible. If surgery is necessary, they have the skills and training to perform the needed procedures. They bring different skill sets to patient care and surgery. The two of them enjoy working together to get the best possible outcomes for

their patients. At times, they have worked as a team side by side during surgery on the same patient. For the convenience of patients who need specialty items, Mid Dr. Elizabeth Klawitter Plains Podiatry carries a great line of footwear and products, including organic foot products made in Nebraska. This author wears two different shoe sizes, which makes shoe shopping a hassle. At Mid Plains Podiatry, I do not need to buy two pairs—I can order two different sizes of the same style from one of their catalogs. You can choose from all kinds of footwear, including shoes, slippers, boots, and sandals. These are not only good for your feet; they’re also stylish! Another treatment offered is an antifungal treatment and nail restoration for damaged toenails. These Feet Are Made for Walkin’ Make Sure That’s What They Do
By Loretta McCollum
The human foot has a lot of moving parts, including 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Over a lifetime, the average person will use these feet to walk over 150,000 miles— enough to circle the globe six times. Most Americans spend between four and six hours per day on their feet, so it’s no wonder that 75 percent of us report foot problems like bunions and calluses or chronic pain from conditions like arthritis, tendonitis, and flat feet. Foot problems range from injuries to inflammation and may be exacerbated by age or health conditions. Women are more likely to experience foot pain because of the simple fact that they’re more likely to wear ill-fitting footwear. Do we take care of these vital and complicated parts? Sadly, we don’t. Less than half of us actually seek treatment for our foot problems. Winter is the perfect time to address these issues! Spring will soon be here, which means increased outdoor activity and, of course, sandal weather. Chronic foot pain has many causes, including various forms of arthritis. Osteoarthritis results from a breakdown in the cartilage that cushions the bone joints. This allows the bones to rub together, causing pain and swelling. Joint damage connected with osteoarthritis may also trigger painful bone spurs. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition causing joint inflammation and pain. Treatment for arthritis can involve steroid injections, anti-

inflammatory medications, arch supports, custom orthotics, or physical therapy. Inflamed or irritated tendons in the foot and ankle can result in tendonitis, which may be the result of an injury but is typically caused by repetition of movement. Treatment may include antiinflammatory drugs, physical therapy, or surgery to lengthen or shorten the affected tendon. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, becomes inflamed. Runners and people whose footwear provide little support are more likely to develop this painful condition. Conservative treatments include rest, physical therapy, and orthotics. If such treatments are ineffective, surgery to detach the plantar fascia from the heel bone may be necessary. ›››

The condition known as hammertoe is not only unsightly; it can be painful, as well. Hammertoe occurs when two to four toes are crossed or bent in the middle of the toe joint. Ill-fitting footwear is a common cause. Early on, shoe inserts may provide relief, but surgery may become necessary to address the deformed joint. Bunions, corns, and calluses are also in the category of foot conditions that are unsightly and may be painful. A bunion is a bony bump at the base of the big toe that causes the toe to turn inward. It may be caused by arthritis, family history, or wearing narrow shoes. Treatment ranges from custom shoe inserts to surgery to straighten the big toe and surrounding metatarsals. Corns and calluses manifest as thick, hard layers of skin. Corns usually occur at pressure points on the bottom of the foot or on the side of the toe. Hard corns are areas of dead skin with a central core, and they tend to be very painful. A callus is a thickening of the outer layer of skin and is usually painless. Either of these conditions can result from an improper gait or poorly fitting shoes. Your doctor may shave off the top of a callus and may recommend orthotics or surgery if the cause of the callus or corn is believed to be a poor walking style. A foot fungus is an irritation or infection involving a rash, itching or flaking skin, or thick and discolored toenails. Athlete’s foot is a common foot fungus that thrives in warm, moist environments like locker rooms and shower areas. It typically manifests as a scaly rash that may itch, burn, and peel. A prescription cream can generally clear it up. Toenail fungus causes toenails to become discolored, thickened, and deformed. The nail may also detach and peel away. Prescription medication or laser treatment are options to alleviate this problem. If you’re having foot trouble, a visit to a specialty foot care store or a podiatrist’s office is in order. Foot care stores utilize technology to analyze gait, pressure points, and foot shape to recommend pads, inserts, or shoe types. Podiatrists are doctors of podiatric medicine (DPM) who specialize in the foot and ankle. These physicians can prescribe custom orthotics or perform surgery to correct a variety of issues. If you need relief from foot pain, get in touch with a local podiatrist or specialty foot care store to see what they can do to help. It’s a step in the right direction! Be Your Biggest Fan Love and Honor Your Own Being “There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.” —John Lennon I must admit that this quote really hits me between the eyes. I am a huge John Lennon fan, but I had never read it before. Several sentences in this quote really got me thinking. “There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love.” What a true statement. For most of us, the emotion of fear causes us to become immobilized. We can’t move forward in any area of our lives. Sometimes fear becomes so intense that all we want to do is escape. Hence, we “pull back from life.” When we are in love, it’s as if someone puts rose-colored glasses over every experience in our lives. We may come across a bad driver, but we don’t even notice. We may run into someone who is having a bad day, but, by the time we have to leave, we are both smiling. It is a wonderful thing to love.
By Janet Van deWalle
The line that affects me the most in this quote, however, is: “If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create.” Many of us might feel that loving by honoring our own being is selfish. I am not sure where we learned this, but what I have come to know through the years is that this part of Lennon’s quote is right on. If we are not our own biggest fans, we will not be able to give those in our lives whom we love the best of us. They will only get a portion of who we are. “If you doubt the virtue in self-honor, remember what the flight attendant says, ‘Put your own oxygen mask on first.’ You are of no use to anyone else if you have not taken care of your own needs first—this includes your own emotional, as well as physical, well-being.” —Jonathan Lockwood Huie John Lennon got it. He was a man who understood how important love is in the world. He also understood that without loving and honoring ourselves, we will not be the incredible, deliberate creators that we came forth to be. This Valentine’s Day, let’s give ourselves the best gift possible… the love and honor of our own being…and then we can begin to spread it around! WE

Kids Comments
www.womensedition.com
Do We Help Our Kids Too Much? Be a Guide on the Side We all love our kids, but do we help them too much? We try to keep them from harm, but do we stop them from taking chances? We want them to make decisions, but do we plan every aspect of their lives? If we solve all our kids’ problems, do we rob them of the ability to develop necessary coping skills? What do they learn, if we do everything for them? These questions came up recently over coffee with some neighbors. Sally complained that Johnny was always forgetting something...his lunch, his homework, his ball glove…it was always something. She wondered whether she should rescue him by delivering the forgotten item or let him face the consequences, hoping it would spur him to be more mindful. JoAnn worried about how much she should help Susie with homework and school projects. She asked if it was better to show her how or just be available if Susie had a question. “It seems like Susie has the most trouble getting started, especially on projects. Should I make a plan of attack for her or let her do it?” she asked. Margaret told about the time her son came home and obviously had been in a fight. “I asked Mark what happened,” she said. “He muttered something and went to his room. I’m in a quandary over how to handle it.” She sighed and recalled Mark mentioning something about bullies at school. A lengthy discussion about parental responsibility ensued. We talked about just how much responsibility we should take in
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
situations like these. We agreed that our reactions and responses should be partially determined by the kid’s age…the younger the child, the more parents should do, while still including the kids in choosing a solution. Asking, “How can we solve this problem?” met the consensus. The group came to the conclusion that, in general, when our children experience problems, whether with school work or relationships, it isn’t too helpful for us to step in and solve the problems. We decided that asking the kids what they thought should be done and then helping them come up with several solutions was the most helpful reaction. After brainstorming possible solutions for a couple of minutes, go over them together. We agreed that some unacceptable solutions might be mentioned, but that all should be carefully considered. The kids will usually know what is acceptable and what isn’t. The idea is to let the kids come up with their own solutions, with our guidance. Be a guide on the side rather than taking over. That way, we give the kids a chance to build the confidence to make their own decisions on ways to solve problems. Most people don’t want someone telling them how to solve their problems. Kids are people, too. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Kitchen Remodeling Done Right Your Blueprint for Success
By Robyn V. Powell
In recent years, the kitchen has evolved from a single-purpose room, designed specifically for food preparation, to the multi-purpose hub of the home, where people meet to socialize, do homework, and, of course, cook. If your kitchen was built prior to this era, remodeling can be an exciting way to enhance your lifestyle and add value to your home, with an average return on investment of between 60 and 70 percent. Before you begin knocking down walls, however, it’s important to recognize that a kitchen is one of the most complicated remodeling jobs you can do and that living through a remodel can be disruptive and stressful. If you’re ready to make your kitchen remodeling job a reality, check out these tips to help you build the kitchen of your dreams. A well-designed kitchen should last 20 years, so experts recommend choosing a layout that works for you and your family. Consider efficiency, function, style, and longevity. One major way to keep costs down is to keep your current floor plan. Taking down walls, moving gas lines, and relocating plumbing lines and electrical connections will quickly erode your budget. If the current layout works for you, keep it! Innovative shelving can make more space in a small kitchen. Equip blind corners with double sliding shelves, where one set of shelves slides out and over to allow a second set of shelves tucked in the corner to slide forward. Another clever option is to install
two height-adjustable, kidney-shaped shelves that snake out and to the side in one fluid motion, eliminating the need to reach inside for items tucked in the rear. Cabinets make up the biggest slice of the remodel expenditure, so choose a style you love, invest in premium glides and hinges, and select attractive hardware. Choose a manufacturer that offers your preferred door style and finish as a standard option and not as an upgrade. If your cabinets are still solid and just need a fresh look, consider refacing. Refacing involves removing and replacing cabinet doors and drawer fronts and veneering the cabinet boxes. It’s much quicker and less expensive than replacing. Cabinet trends for 2019 forecast mixing things up. Subtle layering of colors like white and gray create nuanced visual interest. While the all-white kitchen remains a classic choice, pairing it with dark hardwood floors beautifully grounds all that white ›››

and enhances the cozy factor. Natural and whitewashed wood cabinets reflect a return to simplicity. Open shelving remains popular, allowing you to showcase your beautiful kitchenware and heirloom pieces. The downside is that exposed dishes collect dust, so make sure you don’t mind having to do a quick rinse prior to use. From induction cooktops to state-ofthe-art wine fridges, showy appliances are difficult to resist. Before investing in these handsomely styled showpieces, it’s wise to carefully consider your needs and weigh the pros and cons. For example, a professionalgrade range may go from simmer to sear in seconds and be built to last 20 years, but it also carries a hefty sticker price, requires a special vent hood, and can weigh over 900 pounds, requiring additional under-floor support. Opting for quality appliances that can be upgraded later, if you’re so inclined, and investing in fixed items like quality countertops makes better sense. Be sure to sure to choose your appliances first so you can build the design around the dimensions of the appliances you want. Granite and marble, with their beautiful natural veining, remain popular countertop choices, but engineered stone is becoming the preferred choice among many homeowners. Quartz offers an alternative to natural stone by offering a quarried look minus the veining. These rock-hard slabs of quartz never need to be sealed and provide a zeromaintenance and zero-worry surface. Beautiful lighting is the finishing touch to highlight a new kitchen. Choose from the latest LED recessed and task lighting for functionality and create a sparkling focal point with a pair of over-the-island pendants. Lighting stores are excellent resources with knowledgeable staff members who can guide you in making the right selections. No matter what your new kitchen will look like, assembling the right team of professionals is the best way to ensure a proper and timely installation. It takes a team with the right experience and skill to create and implement a design that works with your space and goals and stays within your budget. Professional kitchen designers and general contractors have the knowledge and expertise to make installation as seamless as possible. Keeping the stress levels that come with living through a kitchen remodel to a minimum allows you to relax and enjoy the process of creating your dream kitchen. Building a High-End Home? Find High-End Cabinetry at European Designs
By Marge Shoemaker
When you’re building a new home, you have so many choices to make! You want the best quality in everything, as long as it fits within your budget. Not sure where to splurge? Consider that some things, such as paint and carpeting, can be easily changed through redecorating…and they often are. If you’re going to make an investment, focus on something that will last, like custom cabinetry. At first glance, many cabinets look alike…just a box with shelves or drawers and some kind of front. If you look closer, however, you can easily see the difference in quality between custom-made cabinets and what you might find at the big box stores. At European Designs, your cabinetry is designed just for you and is made by experienced craftsmen. David Walz, the owner and CEO of European Designs, has been in the business for about 12 years. David grew up in the Omaha metro area. “I’ve always been interested in working with wood,” he recalls. “Dad encouraged us to develop these skills, either at school in shop class or in the home workshop. Every year, we would find some new tool under the tree…a table saw and miter box were among the larger ones.” Over the years, David worked with a brother remodeling houses and thought about joining his father in the plumbing business. His dad discouraged him, saying “You love working with wood…do something with that.” David remembers his dad advising him, “Do one thing, and do it well.” David has spent years building and developing his own construction businesses. First was Maverick Construction, through which he provided professional installation services for residential and commercial builders in the area. Over thousands of installations, David and his talented Maverick Construction crew developed a keen understanding of solving problems and sticking to builders’ schedules and budgets. The Kay Dee Company of Omaha, another business of which David is the owner and CEO, provides a resource for architectural millwork. Kay Dee does a lot of franchise work, supplying wooden items like counters, cupboards, and work tops. “With the franchises,” David comments, “the parent companies have particular specifications and standards that each franchisee must meet. We make it easy for those building new construction because we have records of their needs and can do the work in-house.” The next venture for David was custom cabinetry at European Designs, and it’s a natural next step. Most of the millwork is done in-house at Kay Dee, where highquality cabinets and fixtures for residential clients are constructed. David talks to the architect and the owners

on each project to determine what specifications must be met and what materials, sizes, woods, stains, finishes, and other details are desired. Because the work is done in-house, David can provide a realistic estimate of the final cost for fabrication and construction on any project. European Designs works with a select group of local contractors and clients who are appreciative of highgrade quality and craftsmanship. A favored high-end supplier is the Wood-Mode company, in Pennsylvania. Wood-Mode offers quality by controlling every step of the cabinetry construction process. High-grade, furniturequality woods are selected, seasoned, and kiln-dried at their facility until the highest standards are met. Every piece is assembled by hand and carefully inspected for quality. David points out that the whole face of a cabinet door is finished prior to adding any millwork or molding. “In the case of wood shrinkage, which can happen under some conditions, no unfinished or bare wood is visible,” he enthusiastically reports. The sample he shows is satinsmooth. Hand assembly of the component parts is also a sign of high-quality workmanship. Wood-Mode also offers such amenities as integrated lighting and tested functionality of all cabinets and drawers. The company offers a lifetime warranty on their products. The talented craftsmen at European Designs handbuild cabinetry components. “My guys have been with me for a while,” David reports, “and they know only the highest standards are applied. They take great pride in their work!” David advises all of us to determine budgetary parameters prior to talking to a contractor and to look around before making a final choice. “As you wander through a model home, look at the details,” he recommends. “Go deeper than the surface presented. Open the drawers and cabinets. Check out the materials. Ask questions about what is included in any estimate. Your new home is a major expense—make sure you’re getting the best deal for your money.” For a free consultation, call European Designs at 402827-1100. Learn more online at europeandesigns.com. It’s Not Your Parents’ Chain Link The Latest in Fencing
By Anne Yankus
Some of us just love to look at the large, borderless lawns around our houses. On the other hand, sometimes we need a fence to keep pets and plants in (or neighbors and their pets out). When you decide you’re ready for a fence, what kind of fence might you want to build? There are many materials, options, and styles to choose from. First things first—you need to determine the primary purpose of your fence. Is it for privacy, for security, to mark the property line, or just for decoration? Privacy fences create (of course) privacy. They often need to be at least six feet tall and have tightly-spaced boards or stakes to minimize visibility. Security fences are equally straightforward—they’re designed to keep people (or animals) out. They also need to be quite tall (to deter casual fence-hoppers) and often have smooth vertical surfaces and pointy tops (to keep out dedicated climbers). A lower-profile option is a safety fence, which usually functions as a pet enclosure or to deter trespassers and wildlife. Practical safety fences can fulfill their function without costing as much money as a higher-profile fence. For decoration or marking property lines, you can get away with much less fence; mainly, it just needs to be appropriately placed and visually appealing. Before you choose a fencing material, you may want to consider what design styles are trending. Some popular styles

include horizontal fencing, as opposed to the more vertical look of old-fashioned picked fences; wood alternatives, such as vinyl, aluminum, and pre-fabricated concrete; plant integration, with built-in planter boxes or “living” vine fences; and lighting integration, with cap lights or up lights. With a few design ideas under your belt, it’s time to consider materials. One of the most classic and popular fencing options is, of course, wood. Wooden fences have many advantages—they’re economical, provide a privacy barrier, can be formed into any shape, and can be painted any color. On the other hand, wood requires regular maintenance and may need replacement every decade or so. It also attracts wood pests and may change color or warp when exposed to a lot of sunlight. Another popular fence material is iron. Iron fences are usually crafted using wrought iron and have the advantages of ›››

being strong and long-lasting without rotting or warping. Wrought iron fences, though not as versatile as wood, provide an artistic visual aesthetic. However, due to their thin profile, they do not provide the privacy (or safety for pets) that you can get from a wooden fence. Iron fences are also vulnerable to rusting over time and still require regular repainting or maintenance. A newer alternative is aluminum fencing, which has a significantly lower cost than wrought iron. Aluminum can be crafted into styles similar to that of wrought iron fences but without the worry of rust or any regular maintenance. As a more malleable metal than iron, aluminum fences also have the benefit of being rackable (that is, you can mount them in a rack), which helps eliminate gaps if your yard is sloped or on a hill. Also, as premanufactured items, aluminum fences almost always come with manufacturer warranties. If your primary fencing goal is to create a low-profile safety fence to confine your pet, you might want to consider the option of invisible fencing. Invisible fencing, which utilizes high-frequency sound to keep your pet from crossing an underground line, can be purchased and installed at a reasonable cost and is quite adaptable to whatever kind of terrain your yard has to offer. Invisible fencing also has the benefit of being, well, invisible—it maintains the open yard aesthetic you may prefer. Invisible fences are good for deterring dogs that are diggers or climbers, and you’ll never again let a pet loose by forgetting to close the gate. While traditional fences work well on flat or gently sloping yards, invisible fencing works on almost any terrain. Invisible fences can span hilly spots, wooded areas and water. Once you’ve decided on the kind of fencing you desire, you need to choose a professional to design and install it. Get a few estimates from local fencing companies to make sure that the cost of materials and installation will fit into your budget. Whether you’re looking for a way to keep your pet safe at home or just a nice aesthetic for your property line, a new fence is a great way to provide the finishing touch for your yard. Heart to Heart
Women and Heart Disease
By Karen Zunke Smith
The topic of heart disease may provoke anxiety and fear in some people, while others believe “it could never happen to me.” Don’t kid yourself—the risk is very real. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men. The good news is that there are many ways to reduce your risk. In fact, heart disease is considered to be one of the most preventable of medical conditions. Statistics related to heart disease are startling, especially for women. Though it is the leading cause of death for both men and women, outcomes for women are worse than they are for men. For example, after having their first heart attack, 26 percent of women aged 45 years and older die within a year. Within five years of a heart attack, 47 percent of women will develop heart failure, suffer from a stroke, or die, compared with 36 percent of men. Perhaps most unsettling is that 64 percent of women who die suddenly of coronary artery disease (CAD) had no previous symptoms. Part of the reason for these grim statistics is that women tend to seek medical attention for heart attack symptoms only after heart damage has already occurred. The symptoms of heart attack in women tend to be vague and often go unrecognized, which delays medical care. Also, the average age of women at the time of their first heart attack is 72 years (versus 65 for men), and advanced age brings a greater incidence of other risk factors. Women are also less likely than men to take prescribed
NOW HIRING
medications intended to keep heart and other medical conditions in check. The three key risk factors for heart disease are hypertension, high LDL cholesterol levels, and smoking. About 49 percent of Americans have at least one of these risk factors. Other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also increase the risk of heart disease, including diabetes, poor diet, physical inactivity, being overweight, excessive alcohol use, prolonged stress, advanced age, and family history. Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease. It is caused by an accumulation of plaque in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. This may lead to atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries), which makes it harder for blood and oxygen to reach the heart muscle. Angina is the most common symptom of coronary artery disease. It causes chest pain that may radiate to shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or back. Angina can be difficult to distinguish from a heart attack because the symptoms are so similar. Unlike a heart attack, angina usually resolves quickly with rest or nitroglycerin, and it does not cause damage to the heart.

While chest pain is the most common symptom of heart attack in both women and men, women are more likely to experience other symptoms, with or without chest pain. Such symptoms may include: chest discomfort (pain, pressure, squeezing, or a sensation of fullness); pain in arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach; sweating or shortness of breath with minimal or no exertion; lightheadedness; nausea or indigestion; and unexplained, sudden, or excessive fatigue. When symptoms occur, call 911. The sooner you get to an emergency room, the better your chances of surviving the event and minimizing damage to your heart. Your healthcare provider is the best resource to identify your personal risk factors for heart disease and suggest prevention strategies. These may include weight management, exercise, smoking cessation, stress reduction, and a treatment plan for other conditions that increase the risk of heart disease. Lifestyle changes can be hard. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from family, friends, and medical professionals. Registered dieticians, available through many hospitals and grocery stores, can advise on dietary changes and meal planning. Committing to a new exercise routine may be easier if done with a partner or as part of a group. Focus on activities you have enjoyed in the past or try something new. Consider walking, jogging, golf, tennis, dance, or fitness classes. Stress reduction and smoking cessation may be addressed through behavioral therapy, medications, lifestyle changes, and relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best options for you. You may be able to prevent the progression of heart disease or even see some reversal by strictly adhering to your healthcare provider’s recommendations for medications, diet, lifestyle, and monitoring. If surgery becomes necessary, minimally invasive techniques may be sufficient. The month of February is when we focus on matters of the heart, so it’s a good time to think about heart health. Learn about risk factors, talk to your doctor, take a CPR class, and know the symptoms of a heart attack. If symptoms occur, call 911 immediately. An Inside Look
Simplicity Wellness, Yoga and More Put the Focus on You By Jackie Byers
Simplicity Wellness, Yoga and More is a reality because Chanell Jaramillo wants to provide yoga to anyone who is interested in it. Chanell holds a PhD in psychology, has several teaching certifications, and has spent hundreds of hours teaching yoga, leading classes in Omaha since 2009. Chanell, the founder of Adaptive Yoga Omaha, trains instructors to lead yoga classes in acute care and rehabilitation settings. “Any teaching is rewarding, of course, but working with these clients is especially so,” she declares. Chanell began her yoga teaching career by holding classes at others’ studios. When a studio where she was teaching closed, her clients sought her out. They wanted to continue with the beneficial yoga she offered, which was unavailable anywhere else in Omaha. Chanell took the leap and opened her own studio near 144th and Maple Streets, where she now teaches. The result is a welcoming, tasteful facility with many healthy offerings. For Chanell, essential to opening a studio was hiring Megan Roth to manage the facility. They had taught together for years, but Megan wasn’t sure about managing a studio. “I felt my talents could be better used in another career,” she explains. “Chanell kept insisting that this was the right path for me, and I was right for this job.” Though she turned down the job more than once, Megan eventually accepted the position… and she’s glad that she did. “Chanell is right,” Megan says, with a smile. “I love this job and the work I do here. We work so well together. I think we make positive differences in our clients’ lives.” Among the yoga classes offered at Simplicity Wellness, Yoga and More are Chair, Beginner, Yin, Hatha, Heated, Ashtanga, Sculpt, Power, Flow, and Restorative. Any type of yoga you want is available at Simplicity, including yoga for beginners and yoga specifically for teen athletes. Chanell also offers off-site classes at the Florence Home and specialized yoga for the Lancer Hockey team. “Our small classes allow instructors to work closely with clients, explaining and demonstrating to help students get maximum benefits.” The word “More” in the studio name is quite appropriate. Though it is only one building, Simplicity Wellness, Yoga and More offers an amazing array of learning opportunities and products associated with healthy practices and healthy lifestyles, including more than 30 classes per week. “We are remodeling the studio to have dedicated space for the Pilates reformer,” a piece of exercise equipment that adds specific resistance to a Pilates workout. “Also, we have specialized counseling sessions for individuals who want private counseling,” Chanell says. “Here, we help clients establish realistic goals in a workable time frame, based on their own lifestyles.”

“We offer many learning opportunities, including life coaching, biofeedback, Reiki, and clinical herbalism,” Chanell continues. “We have staff available for massage therapy, Hellerwork, oncology massage, and nutrition advice. You can also come here for acupuncture, hypnosis, mindfulness training, and a wellness boutique with many great finds.” Among the items offered in the boutique are yoga mats, shirts, tights, and caps. There are toe socks, yoga straps, soaps, and incense. Shelves display herbs, perfumes, handmade jewelry, vitamins, and—as the studio name declares—more. “Our products are environmentally friendly,” Chanell says. They prefer to stock fair trade and organic products that are structured to benefit foundations and not-for-profits. They also like to support local artists. Regular patrons describe Simplicity Wellness, Yoga and More as “welcoming and friendly.” Client Peg notes, “The instructors are very educated. The quality of the teaching is wonderful! As a teacher myself, I appreciate their expertise and care.” Chanell is often asked if she was named for Coco Chanel. She chuckles. “No, my brother named me based on a story he read in grade school. We were never able to find the book.” Chanell’s mother wore Chanel but didn’t want to name her daughter for a brand. “My brother cried and begged. My dad said, “It’s not a bad name. Just let him name her.’ I got my name, but my mom added an L to it, so it was different from the brand.” Whether you have years of experience practicing yoga or none at all, you’ll be warmly welcomed at Simplicity Wellness, Yoga and More. You can learn more or view class schedules online at simplicitywellnessandyoga.com, or just drop by 14450 Eagle Run Drive to take a look around the shop and see the studio space. Focus on Finance
Target-Dated Funds They’re Not All Created Equal By George Morgan
Target-dated funds (TDFs), also called lifestyle or age-based funds, are designed to become more conservative as the owner approaches retirement age. Currently, there are over $1 trillion invested in TDFs, and almost 100 percent of that figure is in 401(k) plans. The conventional wisdom is that all TDFs are pretty much the same. The truth is that there are major differences in the things they invest in, in the way they are managed, in the fees they charge, and in their investment performance. It is important for those who provide these funds and those who own them to understand the specifics of how they operate—they may think they are getting one thing when they are actually getting another. TDFs were developed in the early 1990s by a group of Wells Fargo investment advisors. Today, there are about 50 fund companies providing TDFs, and there are over 700 TDFs on the market. One of the reasons for the rapid growth of TDFs is that the Pension Protection Act of 2006 dictated that TDFs be used as the default investment in 401(k) plans. Most investors and 401(k) plan sponsors think that, as time passes, the TDFs shift the holdings from stocks to bonds, thus becoming more conservative. In some cases, this is true. However, if you read the legal documents supporting these funds, you will find that almost all of them say that, over time, they will move the assets from stocks into less risky investments…but they don’t specifically use the word “bonds.” If you were to explore the holdings of a broad spectrum of TDFs, you would find that some of them hold such assets as lumber, infrastructure contracts, limited master partnerships, long/short strategies, and gold contracts. You cannot assume that you will own more bonds over time just because you invest in a TDF. The rate at which a TDF moves from aggressive to conservative is called the glide path. There is no standard glide path—some move rapidly, others move slowly. You may be anticipating having a reduced exposure to the stock market at a certain age. However, if the TDF you own has a less aggressive glide path, you may own more stocks than you think you do or than you want to. How a fund is managed is critical not only because it determines how well the fund performs, but also because it affects the fund’s risk level. Some TDFs have a very active investment management approach. This means that they do a lot of buying and selling—primarily in stocks, but in some cases, in the less risky assets. Studies have shown that active management does not always produce better results because trading costs money. An alternative is a manager who buys other mutual funds. In this case, investors pay two fees: one to the manager of the TDF and one to the managers of the other
50
February 2019
mutual funds. The last alternative is a passive manager, who buys good investments and simply holds onto them. It’s important to keep an eye on fees because they are critical to the return on your investment (that is, the fees you pay reduce the amount of money you make on your invested funds). Like all mutual funds, all TDFs charge a fee to cover the costs of operations. As in all the areas discussed above, the fees charged by different TDFs vary across the board. Five years ago, you could find TDFs that charged as much as 2.5 percent, but competitive pressures have reduced that number considerably. In today’s marketplace, most fees range from 0.95 percent down to 0.05 percent. Being at the lower end of the fee spectrum will mean more money for you in retirement. Find out what you are paying! The major advantage of TDFs in 401(k) investment menus is that they are very user-friendly. Most 401(k) participants are not sophisticated investors, and TDFs allow them to avoid having to choose between several dozen mutual funds, none of which they know anything about. Because of the conservative nature of TDFs, these investors will not become billionaires, but they are very likely to experience a modest increase in their assets over the course of their working lifetime. The downside to TDFs is that their hands-off nature means that most 401(k) investors never bother to check in and see how they are doing. Regulations require that plan sponsors check the market periodically to make sure that the plans they’re offering remain competitive. There are no such requirements for investors, but they should examine their TDFs occasionally. In the long term, every fund hits a snag, and you want to notice it when that happens to your fund. The bottom line for TDFs is the same as with all investments: Let the buyer beware. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing. WE

The Green Thumb
Planting New Trees in the Garden Deciduous or Evergreen?
By Sharon Knierim
It seems that gardeners and those who love to landscape are always in the mood to plant new trees. Placing a new tree, however, requires more than just plunking a young sapling into the ground! If you’re hoping to add a tree that will thrive in your landscape this year, you’ll need to do a bit of homework first. Learn about your prospective tree’s growth habits and consider the tree’s future needs. Will it require gallons of water? If so, how far away is its water source? Is it resistant to disease and pests? Nobody wants to become a slave to a high-maintenance tree! (Pro tip: Never plant a tree in a swampy area.) One of the first decisions to be made is whether to plant a deciduous tree or an evergreen. Early on in your decisionmaking process, you’ll want to decide the purpose of the tree. What are your expectations? If you’re hoping to create an effective screen or windbreak, evergreen is the better choice. In fact, a grouping of evergreens can discourage dust and promote privacy. Deciduous trees offer beauty to any area. Some favorites feature beautiful flowers in the spring, while some species are famous for their colorful foliage in the autumn. One drawback to deciduous trees is the fact that they are totally bare for several months of the year. Deciduous trees are most useful planted as a background or anchor for showy shrubs and flower gardens. Even though deciduous trees are bare for extended
periods, many of them are worth the wait! When they open their leaves, it is a wonderful reminder that warmer and more comfortable air is on its way. When you plant a new tree, you’ll probably want to consider how quickly it is likely to grow so you’ll know how soon it will reach its full size. Deciduous trees grow at many different rates. Some are fast-growing, which is nice if you’re hoping for shade sometime soon. However, fastgrowing varieties often have less stable wood. The growth rates of evergreens, on the other hand, typically range from slow to very slow. Many gardeners find evergreens difficult to keep alive because their requirements are numerous. They do not like extreme heat, they need cool nights, and they are not helped by hot, drying winds. They do like rain and thrive best in geo-

graphical areas that get at least 35 to 40 inches of rain annually. The hardiest of evergreens are cedars, junipers, pines, and hemlocks. At one time, planting evergreens in the southern and midwestern regions of the United States was discouraged because the trees were often unsuccessful in those climates. With today’s new genetics and better gardening practices, we see these trees populating both regions and offering a wonderful variety to our landscapes. The best tree for your landscape will depend on the size of your space, its scale, and the amount of space taken up by sheds, pools, vegetable gardens, and the like. Before making a final decision, consider the prospective tree’s height, color, and mass. For instance, do not plant a tree which will eventually become a true giant on a small property or in a yard with a small house. Some really good deciduous trees to plant on properties in the range of 50 by 100 feet (a reasonably common residential plot size) are scarlet or pin oak, elm, ginkgo, sugar maple, and mountain ash. Sassafras and sweet gum are other good choices. For larger properties, where space is not a primary factor in tree selection, there are plenty of appropriate choices. Good suggestions are white or red oak, beech and linden, horse chestnut, sycamore, Norway maple, and hackberry. These trees spread more than the trees previously listed; both lists are good selections for mass of foliage, shade, and stateliness. Whether you add deciduous or evergreens into your landscape, performing the research is well worth the effort. You will be glad that you took the time to understand your new tree’s requirements. Some people feel that the hardest part of planting a tree is waiting patiently as the tree grows at its own rate. Yes, it would be wonderful if a tree could double in size and mass during its first year, but patience is an important virtue. Why do so many of us want to plant trees? Maybe it’s because a tree is a positive sign of hope. Planting a tree shows your optimism for the future! Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. She lives on a small farm in western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her greenthumbed reader friends. WE February 2019

21st-Century Marriage Counseling Outside Help Keeps Couples on Track

Let’s face it—marriage is hard. It’s not easy to grow and change in tandem with another person for 20, 40, 60 years. You get married in your 20s, you build a financial and emotional life together. You may have children or start new careers or move to a new part of the country together. These events, though exciting, can still put a strain on any relationship. Years later, you find that you have both grown into very different people than you were when you were young. People change! Sometimes, we need a little help adjusting to change. This is where a marriage counselor can help. One common mistake that couples make is thinking that they don’t need any outside assistance because they’re not in crisis. You don’t need to wait until things are bad before seeing a counselor! Talking about your relationship with a third party and working together on a regular basis can be a very healthy practice, and it’s a great way to build communication skills. More and more people are wisely meeting with a counselor before their relationship is on the rocks. People may hesitate to seek marriage counseling because it’s not easy to openly discuss private issues. You may need to admit that things are not perfect and that some of the strain in your relationship is caused by you. In addition, many people do not have experience with any form of counseling, so the idea of seeing a therapist at all can cause some anxiety. Many couples
avoid seeking help until they feel the relationship is in real trouble, which can be caused by different situations. A breach of trust in a marriage is often caused by infidelity, but any type of dishonesty can cause a breakdown of trust. This could include dishonesty about finances, career changes, or parenting choices. A marriage counselor can help rebuild trust. Disagreements are part of every healthy relationship. However, if a couple is arguing more than usual, if the arguments are more intense or cause hurt feelings, or if nothing seems to get resolved, it may be time to bring in a third party. This is especially useful if one or both of you feels misunderstood or unappreciated. If you are plagued with a feeling that something is wrong in your relationship, but you don’t know what it is, it’s time to talk to someone. A professional may be able to identify a problem that you and your partner are too close to see. Also, counseling

can help if there is something you want to tell your partner, but you just can’t find the right words or the right time. Other leading reasons to visit a marriage counselor include financial trouble, different parenting styles, handling in-laws, and even your job. You may be surprised how outside forces like in-laws or the demands of a career can have on your marriage. To find a good counselor or therapist, consider word-of-mouth referrals. You may not realize how many of your friends have worked with a counselor. You can also look online for local therapists or ask your physician for a referral. Remember that marital counseling requires different skills than are needed for individual counseling. During interviews with potential therapists, ask about their experience with marriage counseling and learn what techniques they like to use with couples. A qualified counselor will be familiar with many different therapy techniques proven to work in marriage counseling. Licensing varies by state, but most counselors who use the title “marriage and family therapist” are licensed mental health professionals (LMHPs) with at least a master’s degree. Don’t be shy about asking for credentials! Most importantly, trust your gut and work with someone you really feel comfortable talking to about your marriage. Many marriage counselors will suggest meeting on a weekly basis for a few months. You can discuss with your partner and your therapist whether more sessions are needed. You may want to consider seeing the counselor for an annual visit to make sure you are using the techniques you learned and to offset future problems. Overall, the satisfaction rate for marriage counseling is good, but both partners need to be engaged in the process. When things are going well in your marriage, it can make other aspects of your life happier, as well. It may be hard to see the need for counseling if the sailing seems smooth, but when it comes to marital counseling, the expression “the sooner, the better” really applies. Whether you’re building the foundation for a healthy relationship with your partner or the two of you are on the brink of divorce, marriage counseling can have a positive effect on your life, and it’s well worth your time. Is Your Windshield Cracking Up? Windshield Repair and Maintenance By Brennan Hallock
A few months ago, I was driving on the highway when I pulled behind a truck to take an exit. Suddenly, a rock flew up from one of the truck’s tires and struck my windshield, leaving a small, circular crack. This experience is frustratingly common! Other causes of windshield damage include improper installation, fluctuating temperatures, accidents, and low-quality glass. Your windshield is constantly in contact with the outdoor conditions—wind, rain, sleet, snow, hail. For optimum visibility, it’s vital to maintain your windshield and keep it in good condition. The windshield also plays an important structural role in the car, adding to its overall strength. This is why it is important to your safety to make sure your windshield is free of cracks and chips. Windshield damage can include anything from a tiny chip to a completely shattered windshield, but most damage falls into five major categories. A traditional crack consists of a single line that spreads across the windshield. This type of crack usually starts with an impact; sharp temperature changes cause it to spread. A bull’s-eye chip is usually caused by a rock or other debris kicked up on the highway. It resembles a bull’s-eye, or a dark circle around a deeper impact point. The half-moon is like the bull’s-eye chip, but the circle is not closed, so it looks more like a half moon. The star break looks something like a squished

spider—cracks emanating out from an impact point. A combination break involves two or more types of damage. If your windshield damage is sustained in an accident, it will often result in a combination break. Many people continue to drive after experiencing windshield damage without repairing it. This is tempting, but it is usually not the best decision. If you do not repair a minor chip or crack, the damage is likely to spread and will eventually require full windshield replacement. This is especially true if you live in a location with cold temperatures. Extreme changes in the temperature of the glass, like those caused by defrosting your windshield in the middle of winter, can cause cracks to spread. A minor crack is reasonably cheap to repair. If the chip or crack is small enough to be covered by a dollar bill, it is safe to repair your windshield rather than replace it. If the crack is in

the direct line of sight of the driver, if there are more than three cracks or chips, if a crack is at the edge of the windshield, or if the windshield is old and covered with tiny divots, then the whole windshield should be replaced. Insurance will normally help with the cost of windshield repair. Depending on your coverage, you may have a deductible to meet before your insurance will pay for the rest. This is especially helpful with shattered windshields or large cracks. Smaller cracks may be covered if you have comprehensive insurance with full glass coverage. Your favorite auto body or collision repair shop can likely repair all types of windshield damage, from chip repair to full replacement. Another option for windshield repair is on-site repair and replacement, which brings the windshield specialist to you at home or at work. This is especially helpful if you have a vehicle with a completely shattered windshield, as it is dangerous to drive your vehicle to a repair shop in that condition. Although a chipped or broken windshield seems like something that happens to everyone at some point in time, there are ways to lower your risk of facing such an event. The main ways to prevent damage to your windshield involve paying attention
to your behavior. Keeping a safe distance from large trucks on the highway, avoiding unpaved roads (and driving slowly, if you can’t avoid them), parking your vehicles indoors (out of the sun), avoiding extreme temperatures and sudden temperature changes, and steering clear of potholes all help protect your windshield. If your windshield sustains damage, repair it immediately to prevent further damage. Some windshields are stronger than others, and there are some products that can strengthen your windshield. Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) windshields are identical to the factory windshield because they are made by the same manufacturers; they tend to be more durable than aftermarket products. There are also windshield treatment products, such as ones from Nano Safeguard and Rain-X, that strengthen the glass. These molecularly bond with the glass surface and help disperse and distribute the force of a sudden impact, lessening the likelihood of damage. These products have the added bonus of repelling rain and stopping dirt and bugs from sticking to the glass. The Good Life
Menopause Makeover Strategies for Wellness By Janette Calabro
Musicals and movies and books have been written about it—lots of them. Why, then, does menopause remain a mystery? Though we have a lot in common, every woman’s journey through menopause is unique. Your best friend might handle menopause with a jaunty sense of humor, laughing at the latest menopause blog. You, on the other hand, might prefer the dynamics of a support group or rely heavily on the vast knowledge and sage advice of your OB-GYN. Resources for navigating the “change of life” are endless. There are private Facebook sites devoted to women who want to share with a support group. Maybe you prefer a serious discussion with your physician about hormone levels, help from a dietician to improve your diet, or sessions with a personal trainer. Of course, a consultation with a mental health practitioner might help with all the ups and downs. Many women agree that a combination of all of the above is the best education and treatment for menopause. Sex hormone levels naturally decrease as women age, and the ovaries eventually stop releasing eggs, which means that menstruation ends. Twelve months after your period stops permanently, menopause is said to start. There appears to be some link between when menstruation starts and when it ultimately ends. For example, one study states that a menstruating 11-yearold is more likely to start menopause prematurely, before she reaches 40 years, as opposed to a girl who starts her period at age 13. The average age for women in the United States to hit menopause is 52 years. Are you headed toward menopause? It doesn’t happen all at once. A woman’s body transitions over several years. Common symptoms include hot flashes, vaginal dryness, irregular bleeding, insomnia, and incontinence, along with mood extremes that might include depression and anxiety. The production of hormones is complicated—too much is bad for us, and too little doesn’t work, either. For example, insomnia may be related to insulin production or weight gain. Reducing sugar and alcohol in your diet may have a positive outcome against night sweats and can lead to better sleep. A consultation with your physician about your hormone levels is a sensible choice. Prescription medications such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT), a combination of estrogen and progesterone (or only estrogen, if you don’t have a uterus), is one option to help reduce hot flashes and night sweats. HRT may even help prevent osteoporosis. Bioidentical HRT consists of hormones that are chemically identical to the hormones that your body produces. These are available commercially but are often obtained from compounding pharmacies, where medications are created for individual patients. Like all medications, HRT comes with side effects, and it’s not
60

for everyone. Your doctor can help assess the risks and benefits to determine if HRT is best for you. Nontraditional remedies are great alternatives for treating both mind and body, if prescriptions aren’t your cup of tea. Though many methods are not clinically proven to work, they have helped many women navigate the troublesome symptoms of menopause, and they might help you, too. Night sweats disrupting your sleep? Try black cohosh, soy, or flaxseed. Topical vitamin E helps vaginal dryness. Acupuncture may help correct hormone imbalances. While studying the long list of natural alternatives, consider that the jury is still out on their effectiveness. In addition, natural supplements are not regulated in the same way as prescription medications, and they may interact with each other (or with prescriptions you’re taking). Talk to your doctor before taking a supplement. If mood swings and sleep disruption are your primary symptoms, try a yoga class or anything aerobic. Exercise reduces irritability—combined with meditation and deep breathing, the benefits multiply. During menopause, metabolism slows down, which makes dieting a tempting choice. However, low-calorie diets alone may decrease muscle mass. Instead of dramatically cutting calories, try cutting out some carbs and watching each meal’s portion size. Reduce your chances of bone loss and osteoporosis by getting 30 minutes of physical activity most days, and don’t forget to add resistance training to your regimen. Of course, a cold drink without caffeine or alcohol might squash those hot flashes instantly (fan optional). Try a glass of cold water or antioxidant-infused fruit juice. Forgetfulness, trouble focusing, and irritability sneak their way into daily life during menopause. Tackle these symptoms by staying socially and mentally active. Now is the time to join that hiking club, dive into a second language, or ballroom dance your way into a new life (don’t forget to bring your partner along for the ride!). There’s lots of good news along the menopause journey! Remember that healthy lifestyle choices are key to getting the best out of this phase of your life. Great Escapes
“It’s Island Time” Galveston, Texas
By Jackie Williams
Located on the Gulf of Mexico on Texas’s upper coast, the 32-mile long island of Galveston is home to the fourth busiest cruise port in the United States. It’s 50 miles southeast of Houston, so getting to Galveston is easy. It’s a great destination for weekends away or for exploring before and after a cruise. Snowbirds flock here for the mild winters and nice weather. The nearly seven million other visitors each year come mostly during the summertime, but the best times to come visit Galveston are actually during the spring, fall, and holiday seasons. There are many fun festivals and holiday events at those times of the year. The largest Mardi Gras celebration in Texas (and the third largest in the United States) occurs in Galveston, and it’s quite the party. Galveston is a fantastic location for history lovers. As you’ve heard, “everything is bigger in Texas,” and everything done in Texas was done in Galveston first: the state’s first post office, opera house, country club, golf course, hospital, gas lights, telephone… the list goes on and on. There are a lot of historic sites to visit, and you can hop on the dollar trolley to tour the neighborhoods and see some for yourself. If you are interested in ancestry, you may be surprised to find that Ellis Island isn’t the only place that
immigrants came into America from Europe. From 1840 to 1870, Galveston was a major immigration port for Europeans. When you visit, you will undoubtedly hear reference to the storm of 1900, which killed over 6,000 people and devastated the island. After that storm, the city was elevated and a seawall built to avoid destruction like that again. In 2008, Hurricane Ike unfortunately destroyed many of Galveston’s trees. Local artists saw an opportunity to turn lemons into lemonade by transforming the devastation into tree sculpture art! Galveston’s past was not always aboveboard—from 1924 to 1957, it was primarily known for gambling, until a government crackdown shuttered the industry. Today, the area’s main economic support comes from the Port of Galveston, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, financial institutions, tourism, shrimping, and fishing. ›››

Speaking of shrimping and fishing, you’ll find some great local restaurants that offer amazing seafood. Since we are on the subject of food, you cannot visit Galveston without making a stop at Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant (open since 1911). Their online menu will make your mouth water—whatever you order for dinner, be sure to get a slice of pecan pie for dessert! Don’t miss La King’s Confectionery, which is also over 100 years old. Watch the taffy being pulled while you enjoy the old-fashioned atmosphere at the soda fountain or ice cream counter. If the food sounds too indulgent, don’t worry—there’s an 11-mile seawall to run, walk, or bike after you eat! There are several active events to participate in while you are in Galveston, like 5K runs, half-marathons, and even a 70.3 Ironman race. Fans of water sports will enjoy stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing, and surfing. Yes, there is surfing in Texas! A great place to learn if you haven’t tried already, Galveston even has oil tanker surfing! That’s where a boat will drop surfers off in the wake of an oil tanker, and you can ride the longest wave in the United States for up to 20 minutes. Hit up popular spots like the Strand Historic District, the family adventure destination Moody Gardens, and the Texas Seaport Museum. When you’re done with the crowds, head over to the East End Lagoon to enjoy a day in nature. Even if you are not a bird-watching expert, you will enjoy seeing the huge variety of birds and taking photos of the flora, fauna, and scenery as you walk along the trails and watch people fishing, crabbing, and kayaking. When it comes to accommodations, you have a lot to choose from, whether you’re making a separate trip to Galveston or adding on to a cruise. Book a room at a hotel or resort chain, stay at a B&B in a historic home, drive your RV or pull your camper into the many RV resorts, or rent a vacation home all to yourself. If you want to make it an educational trip for the kids, you can take advantage of the itineraries that Galveston has set up for homeschoolers or educational vacations. Check out Galveston.com/homeschool to learn more. Bring your family to stay for a while in Galveston and spend some quality time together. Enterprising Ideas
Save the Date Catering The Little Caterer That Could By Elizabeth French
Nothing brings people together like a shared meal. This is exactly what Save the Date Catering strives to convey through delectable dishes at every one of their events. “Whenever people want to gather, that’s who we want to work with,” says Kate Duggan, a catering coordinator at Save the Date. Owned by Pamela Briere, Save the Date has worked over 60 events since their recent opening in October of 2016, including weddings, anniversary parties, and rehearsal dinners. Pam has been in restaurant management for almost two decades and is responsible for operations at multiple restaurants outside of Save the Date. “I enjoy watching my employees excel,” she says. “I have employees who have been with me since day one of ownership.” While weddings are their primary niche, Save the Date is expanding. Pam is currently in the process of hiring catering coordinators in a variety of markets to serve a wider scope of clientele. Two of these employees, Cathy Ebers and Kate, are catering coordinators who have known each other personally for years. They combine their unique skill sets to create an unstoppable duo. “Cathy is more organized in preparation, and I really like the execution,” says Kate. “That includes things like getting the food on the table, making sure everybody has what they need, making sure the bride is happy and that the toast happens at the right time.” Working at both intimate and large-scale events, Save the Date is comfortable with a party size anywhere from 20 to 1,000 people. Inside their brand-new location at 1902 Betz Road, in Bellevue, Save the Date houses an industrial kitchen, an elegant waiting area, and a posh new tasting room for potential clients to sample the food before the big occasion. Working with Chef Peter Vanderzyl (“Chef Pete”), Save the Date will be offering a brand-new menu that features locally sourced ingredients with a gourmet flair. Cathy is especially pleased by the focus on local produce. “We’re chopping it ourselves, we’re cooking it ourselves, we’re aiming for more fresh food,” she shares. Creating comfort food with a gourmet twist, Chef Pete makes mashed potatoes with roasted garlic-infused oil to enhance every flavorful bite. If a more formal cocktail hour is on the menu, Chef Pete can create petite amuse-bouches with fresh herbs and spices—small bites with big flavor. Save the Date provides everything from sit-down dinners to buffet-style meals. They will even recreate Grandma’s favorite lasagna from scratch, if a recipe has sentimental value for your guests. “We want to make sure to get it absolutely perfect for your event,” says Cathy. “The thought of entertaining 60-plus people for an

Cathy was in contact with me diligently prior to the event, planning all the details—including the full menu. The day before the event, Cathy came to our house to set up the buffet line and help with decorations. The food was delicious, and we received great feedback from the guests. This was my first time using a caterer for an event like this, and I can honestly say it was well worth the money and peace of mind. I would give Save the Date a five-star rating!” Cathy and Kate build personal relationships with their clientele, forming a special bond by the time the event itself comes together. “It’s emotional,” says Cathy. “This is their special day!” Whether you are looking for a full-blown affair or a sweet and salty fix, Save the Date can accommodate virtually any request. As they thrive under pressure, Kate stresses that her favorite part of her job is “executing an event where everyone is happy at the end. 55+ Communities for Active Seniors Minimum Upkeep, Maximum Enjoyment
By Linda Barnes
Of all the options available for senior living, 55+ communities may offer the best of what active retirees desire: low-maintenance living, planned social activities, and plenty of opportunities to pursue their favorite pastimes. Active senior communities are growing in number and popularity as baby boomers reach retirement age. Many seniors have been quite active as they age and intend to remain active. Such communities facilitate an independent and vigorous lifestyle and offer amenities especially geared toward active seniors 55 years and older. Many seniors who are nearing or at retirement opt to downsize. Empty nesters may not need as much living space, and they may not wish to spend their time maintaining yards and landscaping. However, when it comes to a downsized housing choice, personal preferences come into play. Some seniors might prefer the social aspect of living in an apartment building with resort-style amenities. Others might prefer the privacy of individual housing. For them, a community of single-family dwellings with low-maintenance exteriors may be a better fit, especially if lawn care and snow removal are managed by a homeowners association. A community of individual homes or condos generally has a central clubhouse where residents gather to socialize, exercise, swim, or share occasional potluck meals. Some may include tennis courts or a golf course. Activities build around common interests. Homes or condos are typically owned rather than rented.
68

The size of communities can vary from a few square blocks to many acres. One I’m familiar with is like a friendly small town. Housing includes apartments, condos, and patio homes. There are walking trails, a golf course, a fitness center, and restaurant-style dining. Residents are only responsible for interior upkeep, and even that can be delegated to the housekeeping service, if desired. This particular “town also has a barber and beauty salon, banking, and a library. There is parking for those who wish to maintain a vehicle and transportation available for those who do not. On any given day, residents can choose privacy or interaction with the community. Planned activities at the clubhouse include things like pitch and bridge, movies, singing groups, and Wii games. Educational activities, entertainment, and outings are typical. Safety is ensured by 24-hour security. Another active senior community I know aims for an all-
www.womensedition.com
inclusive, resort lifestyle—very upscale. Housing may be smaller studio designs or spacious two-bedrooms, but they are all luxury apartments with features like full kitchens, washers and dryers, walk-in closets, and decks. Residents are free from performing maintenance and can choose to cook their own meals, dine at the casual buffets, or enjoy elegant dining with wait staff. Meal times are flexible and feature fresh, healthy ingredients. Room service is available, and snacks are always on hand, along with beverages and light desserts. Green spaces with walking paths entice residents outdoors. Shopping, medical care, and recreation are close by. Unlike the previous community, housing is a monthly rent arrangement, with no longterm leases. Fitness and wellness programs are scheduled regularly, as are shopping trips. Daily social activities keep everyone connected and involved. Outside groups come in to perform music, drama, comedy, or other entertainment. On Fridays, residents enjoy happy hour with live music. An option to consider is the continuum of care concept. These retirement communities have independent, assisted, and skilled nursing options, all within one campus. Residents can live independently, but advanced care is readily available, if it becomes necessary. For some seniors, home ownership is important. They tend to appreciate the freedom associated with owning a home and the ability to customize interiors to their own preferences. For these people, a community where homes or condos are purchased makes sense. An attorney may be needed to navigate the legal details when units are individually owned but certain grounds and facilities are shared. You will have input regarding management of the community if you are actively involved in the homeowners association. Others in the 55+ crowd will opt for the advantages of condo-style living with monthly rent and no utility bills or longterm leases. Weekly housekeeping may be included in one all-inclusive fee, and interior and exterior upkeep is handled by maintenance staff. We’ve worked hard so we can kick back and enjoy the leisure we’ve earned in our later years. We want to be healthy and active as long as possible. For many of us, a 55+ community will give us the freedom to optimize these exceptional years. Sources for this article included: seniorliving.org, aarp.org, and www. mylifesite.net. WE February 2019

Take Care of Your Furry Friends The Advantages of Professional Grooming By Brie Christensen
Americans love having pets, and more of us are becoming pet owners all the time. According to a recent survey of American households conducted by the American Pet Products Association, approximately 47 million households own cats and roughly 60 million households own dogs. As more people take on the joy and responsibility of pet ownership, it’s become even more evident how vital it is for individuals to understand the vast benefits that professional pet grooming offers to both cats and dogs. While pet owners might think they can save money by accomplishing the task on their own, home grooming doesn’t always go well—pets sometimes end up needing a professional groomer to fix the damage from a disastrous home grooming session. Starting with professional grooming can save owners a lot of hassles, including time, energy, and stress. Routine visits to the same groomer can also bring the advantage of a regular caretaker for pets—regular groomers can sometimes catch physical concerns that owners don’t know to look for and can refer pets for treatment before the condition gets worse. How do you find a great groomer? Experts say it’s important to first seek referrals from veterinarians or other pet owners and to research different groomers and the services they offer. It’s important for pet owners to explore their options in order to discover the right route for their individual animal. Some professionals even specialize in grooming select breeds of pets! Dog grooming should typically be done monthly. More frequent grooming may be needed for specific breeds or for puppies or animals that are still becoming familiar with the process. The American Kennel Club notes that dog groomers are trained professionals who have all of the necessary tools, shampoos, and experience to get the task done. Most dog groomers start by brushing, bathing, and then drying the animal. Once the pet is dried, professionals trim, clip, or shave the dog’s fur, as requested by the owners. They also clean the dog’s ears and check for signs of infection during the visit. Trimming nails and brushing teeth are also generally offered. Cats spend a lot of time grooming themselves, and this convinces many cat owners that cats can handle their own grooming needs. This is not necessarily true. Professional grooming is still needed for cats to achieve proper health and hygiene—in fact, experts say that regularly scheduled cat grooming is just as important as regularly scheduled dog grooming. Regular sessions allow professionals to check for parasites, lumps, and other symptoms or concerns that owners might overlook, especially if cats are often left to their own devices when it comes to grooming. Much like professional dog grooming, a cat grooming visit can involve bathing, trimming, clipping, and even tooth cleaning. After a professional grooming visit,

owners can expect cats to have fewer hairballs, less matting of the fur, and a generally fresher smell. While regular professional grooming is recommended, owners are also directed to care for their dogs and cats in between appointments by brushing their teeth and bathing them when needed. Pet owners who live in areas of the country with cold winters need to address some special considerations when having their pets professionally groomed during the winter months. After all, one purpose of an animal’s fur is to keep the animal warm—taking too much fur off during grooming can leave an animal unnecessarily vulnerable to the cold. However, leaving too much fur on pets may lead to matting or other issues. Owners should check with their pet’s veterinarian to find out what level of grooming will work best for each individual animal. In recent years, the demand for mobile pet grooming has increased. Many people like the idea of groomers coming to them, instead of having to drop pets off at a traditional grooming salon and then pick them up later in the day. Along with convenience, mobile grooming can provide a more personal touch, while offering a calmer experience than pets might get at a grooming station inside a large facility. In fact, some groomers are even starting to offer house calls. In-home grooming has become increasingly popular recently, as many customers like to watch or stay nearby during their furry friend’s appointment. The familiar, comfortable environment may lead to ease of mind for pets, too. In the end, whether owners choose to visit a brick and mortar shop or have a professional come to them, owners who choose professional pet grooming are making a wise decision and putting their animal’s health first. Positive Perspective
Dare To Dream Make A Dream Collage for 2019 Here we are, into the second month of 2019. Maybe you’re sticking with your New Year’s resolutions, maybe you’re not. Perhaps you gave up on New Year’s resolutions years ago. Instead of all of this angst, do you want to have some fun? “Set a goal SO BIG that you can’t achieve it until you grow into the person who can.”—Unknown In years past, I most likely would have suggested writing down these big goals and reading them every night before going to bed. Visualizing them. Feeling them. Pretending they were yours. This year? Let’s just make a dream collage. Like I said, let’s have some fun! “A dream collage is pictures of your goals. It is like your future photo album.”—Bo Bennett The first step is to get a large art board, some glue, and a very large stack of magazines. Take a few hours to look through the magazines, cutting out the pictures that appeal to you. Want a new car? Find a picture of your dream car and cut it out. (Make sure it is exactly the one you want…same color, exact model, and so on.) Want a baby (or grandchildren)? Find the cutest baby pictures and cut them out. Want a new house? Same routine. Looking for that perfect relationship with a significant other? Find pictures of the

happiest couples you have ever seen. Want a killer body? Those won’t be hard to find…after all, we are looking through magazines! Next step? Take that board and that glue and make a collage of your dreams. “Your goals, minus your doubts, equal your reality.”—Ralph Marston When you are satisfied with your dream board, the next step is the most difficult one. Put it away. Hide it under your bed. Don’t look at it. Don’t think about it. Resist the temptation to revisit it. LEAVE IT ALONE. This may feel counterintuitive. After all, shouldn’t there be some struggle involved here? Some action that has to be taken in order to make it all happen? “The easiest way to grow, is to let go. Knowing that someone else is managing the show.”—Unknown What happens next? At the end of 2019, dig out this dream collage. Look at it. See what has manifested. If you are like most people who play this game, you will be truly amazed at how many of these dreams have manifested. It’s not all there yet? Well, if you are like most of us, you will have grown and changed this year. Update your dream collage. Stick it back under your bed. Take a look at the end of 2020. Let me know how it works! WE
