Editor’s Notes
June Brings Summer…and Summer Memories June 21st is the first day of summer, and that means plenty of sunshine and backyard fun. When my two boys, Adam and Michael, were young, they took full advantage of the Montana summers and the cool grass in our big backyard. Adam had a growing interest in golf, and Michael wanted to be an entomologist (a bug scientist). The yard afforded room for both of them to pursue these interests without doing bodily harm to one another. While Michael was busy digging holes for bug traps, one of Adam’s golf balls fell into a trap. Adam was thrilled at his “hole in one,” and Michael was happy to keep the golf ball as ransom. In order to reclaim his golf ball, Adam agreed to help dig holes for the bugs, which he converted to golf holes. A win-win situation that could only happen in the summer! Many great summer memories are made at weddings. Traditionally, June has been the month for weddings. Do you know why? In the 1400s and 1500s, May was the month of the annual bath. Because superstition prevented a May wedding (it was a gloomy month in Roman history), June was the month of choice. In June, people still smelled relatively fresh. Since there were no roll-on deodorants, the bride carried fragrant flowers to make her as fresh as a daisy. I still love June weddings, though for different reasons. We honor men in June with National Men’s Health Month and Father’s Day. Husbands and fathers are breaking from tradition and embracing their place in the home. Gentlemen, we applaud you! Take care of your health and get your annual checkups. Summertime holds wonder for all of us. Because of Michael’s fascination with bugs, we inspected many spiny, hairy, slimy critters, but one stands out to me: the butterfly. If you look closely, you’ll see that the wings are clear but that they have scales that reflect a rainbow of color when the sun shines on them. This summer, consider starting a tradition to look for secrets in nature with your kids. Help them see the miracle and color in everything from the tiniest butterfly to the most magnificent sunset that fills the sky. June marks the second official month with our newest member at Women’s Edition in Colorado Springs. The Best of Warm Weather Dressing Embrace the Summer Frock
By Holly Bell
Summer is here, and we want to spend our time out in the lovely weather that we’ve been waiting for all winter and spring. Who has time to put together complicated outfits? For quick summer dressing, nothing looks as pulled-together as the perfect summer dress. Here are some hints to help you find the dress that will be your favorite go-to item this season. First, decide what silhouette you are most comfortable wearing. If you are svelte, a skimming sheath dress would be perfect for you. If you are pear-shaped, a fit and flare shape might be the most flattering. If you have an enviable waistline, a dress with a defined waist and perhaps a belt would look good. My favorite shape of all time is the chemise or shift dress. It falls straight from the shoulders and skims over the body in a straight line that is both comfortable and forgiving. If you want a more defined waistline in a shift dress, you can always belt it. Once you know the shape to look for, you can narrow your focus and make your dress hunt much easier. Interesting sleeve shapes are a hot trend right now. A threequarter length sleeve looks great on everyone and is actually quite slimming. Long sleeves sometimes create a color block that makes you look square. Breaking up that color block with a three-

quarter sleeve is a great trick. You can also look for sleeveless dresses in the stores during the summer. They can be very pretty on the right person but are sometimes impractical. Remember— sleeveless dresses mean cold shoulders, so you must always have a jacket or sweater handy for those air-conditioned restaurants! Length in dresses is no longer an issue. Whatever length looks good on you is the best length. Of course, we have all seen a woman in a too-short dress who cannot possibly remain dignified sitting down. A little above the knee is as short as I would recommend. A casual summer dress in a knee length looks cute with those simple tennis shoes that are everywhere right now. I am not talking about a heavier athletic shoe, but a more lightweight summer tennis shoe. A longer midi-dress looks great

Call Today! 719-499-9332 with a sandal, a flat, a little kitten heel, or a platform. Designers are using great fabrications for summer. Nothing beats the lightweight stretch knits for a comfortable and packable dress. Then there are those sheer, floaty fabrics that come in floral prints for a gorgeous summer look…and, with a little ingenuity, that dress can be worn several ways to stretch your vacation wardrobe. On cool nights, add stretch jeans under a shorter dress and it becomes a tunic. Take a casual cotton blend dress, throw it over swimwear, and voilà! Watch it become a swimsuit cover-up. Some women avoid dresses because they’re self-conscious about their bare legs, especially early in the summer, when those legs have been hiding from the sun all winter. Don’t worry—you don’t need a dark tan to look great in summer dresses. If you do want a little more color, you can investigate self-tanning products. These products have improved a lot over the years and no longer give you that orange look of the past. My personal favorite is Airbrush Legs, which is a spray tanner that really covers flaws. If you’d rather have a professional apply your tanner, check with your favorite spa. If you just can’t get comfortable with bare legs, you can still wear summer dresses! Go for a long dress that lands just above the ankle. It’s a very romantic look, especially when paired with sandals. Add a large-brimmed summer hat, and you will look and feel beautiful! A summer frock needs a little jewelry to offset the simplicity of the look. Chokers are a hot trend this summer. Longer necklaces are still popular and are perfect to complete the long, sleek look of a one-piece outfit. Earrings are really fun for this summer, including oversized baubles and attention-grabbing designs like fringy earrings or shoulder dusters linked together. Now that summer is finally here, let’s enjoy it by simplifying our everyday fashion decisions. Throw on that little summer frock and get out under the beautiful blue skies and warm sun. Happy birthday, Gemini! This month, your focus will be on domestic and emotional matters. Over half of the planets are forming a Grand Square. Single Gemini may find love in spiritual places. Cancer (Jun 21–July 22) You should be able to face stormy situations. Because of the planetary positions, you maintain a sensible understanding of life and will be making decisions based on purpose and sound judgment.

Pour the mixture into an 8-inch baking dish. In a bowl, mix three-fourths cup of flour with one-half cup of rolled oats, one-half teaspoon of baking powder, a dash of salt, and one-third cup of brown sugar. Lifetime Dental
Enjoy Your Visit to the Dentist By Ariel Heart
It may seem unfathomable, but it’s true. Patients say they find visits to Lifetime Dental…enjoyable! How does this dental practice accomplish such a feat? Through highquality care, exceptional customer service, and integrity, with personalized attention to each patient. At Lifetime Dental, Dr. David Blackley and his staff strive to provide this type of care every day. Carl and his family have been coming to Lifetime Dental for over a decade, and he concurs, “Dr. Blackley makes going to see the dentist enjoyable.” Carl isn’t the only one. Another patient, Steven, says, “My fear of dentists has completely gone! These folks are great; I actually like coming here.” A third patient, Konnor, goes even further. “If anyone has a fear of dentists from past experience, you won’t after having Dr. Blackley do your dental work.” They are even a hit with children. “They are patient and gentle and make sure my kids have a positive visit,” says Jessica. Lifetime Dental strives to provide a relaxed atmosphere to help you feel at home. They devote time and attention to each patient, and they don’t like to keep you waiting. These hallmarks are prime indicators that this dental practice is different. Too often, patients can feel like cattle, being herded through an office to meet a quota. At Lifetime Dental, they do things differently, providing individualized care and attention, one client at a time. This isn’t a new concept for Dr. Blackley; this is simply how he works. Patient Paul says, “I have been a regular patient of Dr. Blackley’s since 1989 and can attest to the quality of dental care he has provided for me. Dr. Blackley is meticulous in his approach to his patients’ dental care.” Sometimes, reluctance to visit a dentist isn’t about fear of the experience but a lack of trust. In this regard, Lifetime Dental has been a pleasant discovery for many patients. “We know there is no one-size-fits-all situation,” Dr. Blackley notes. “Many times, there is more than one solution to a dental issue. I make time to listen to patients.” It’s a refreshing attitude. Tom testifies, “Dr. Blackley never pressures you into an expensive treatment if a more affordable option does the job just as well. Dr. Blackley and Lifetime Dental put your dental health and happiness above all else.” Dental assistant Kim has worked with Dr. Blackley for 25 years. “Dr. Blackley is really good with the patients and very gentle,” she says. “He doesn’t do work that doesn’t need to be done.” When you visit Lifetime Dental, you can expect to begin with an evaluation, in which your dental history, current situation, and any personal dental concerns and goals are documented. You may desire some cosmetic
12
services, such as teeth whitening or veneers, in addition to dental wellness. Once this is all established, Dr. Blackley spends time with you to jointly develop a customized dental plan for your immediate and longterm dental health. Additionally, Dr. Blackley shares information about prevention and daily care so you can be fully engaged in your treatment. Bob comments, “With his professional experience and current knowledge of modern dentistry, Dr. Blackley has maintained my teeth and gums in a continuously healthy state through an effective preventive care program.” Add to this approach the friendly and professional customer service that patients enjoy, and you can see how Lifetime Dental has garnered such respect. Jenn shares, “The staff is so kind and professional; this is the very best.” Craig gives his endorsement, too. “The staff is personable and very professional, and they listen to what the problem is.” Graduating third in his class, Dr. Blackley received his degree as a Doctor of Dental Studies through Loma Linda University in California. He remains current on procedures and the latest developments in dentistry through the prestigious Spear Education in Scottsale, Arizona, where he also mentors other dentists who are dedicated to the pursuit of clinical excellence in dentistry. Dr. Blackley’s love of the mountains and outdoor lifestyle brought him to Colorado Springs in the early 1980s. He has embraced life here with a passion, as evidenced by his pride at having hiked each of Colorado’s fourteeners. A Woman’s Work
Peculiar Roommates Strange Bedfellows Offer Unexpected Happiness
By Sharon Knierim
Isn’t it true that, just when you think those surrounding you finally understand your wishes and preferences, they somehow pull the rug out from under your feet? Maybe that’s what makes life interesting…or, at the very least, compels us to think of new ways to make our desires known. You might remember that line from “The Godfather,” when one character says to another, “It will be those closest to you who will betray you.” Well, in a much watered-down version of the cautionary tale, poor old Grandma has been betrayed or maybe just outvoted. Here’s the thing: Both my husband and I were raised on diverse Iowa farms where it was the rule that people lived inside of houses and animals lived outside of houses. Animals were domiciled in barns, chicken coops, hog houses, or under the back porch. This was more or less the law of the land. There were no exceptions. After all, why would we bring the animals inside? Were we willing to change places with them and move ourselves into barns, chicken coops, hog houses, or under the back porch? We were not. I will admit that, after our children began growing, we did adopt a dog while we were living in an urban area. We always wondered
about the wisdom of that decision, but when my husband brought that little brown-eyed abandoned dog home with him one dark night during a blizzard, it was impossible to turn the dog away. Instead, we kept that dog, fell in love with him, and made him a member of our family. That little dog is long gone now, but we still remember him and talk about him often. Eventually, he moved to the family farm and lived his life out in complete happiness as he became master of all he could see. Many years later, we became masters of a criminal cat who stole from us constantly. We began to resent that felonious feline, and he, too, moved to the family farm, though for

completely different reasons. In other words, he was forever banished from our house. Through the years, we have attempted to maintain a house cat because our farmhouse is surrounded by cornfields that are well-loved by mice. We have never had a mouse in this house, and I credit the long line of cats who successfully defended our home. Today, we have just one house cat. He lives mainly inside because he is very arthritic and is usually in a foul mood, which makes him unpopular with the neighborhood felines. Enter a new character. We have a young male relative living in the apartment on one level of our house. We love him dearly, and he is a fine young man. When he announced to us a few months ago that he wanted to adopt a dog, he stopped us in our tracks. “Oh, no,” we reminded him. “We are too old to have a dog.” He promised to take care of the dog himself, but he attends college full time, works nearly full time, has a girlfriend, travels, and even sleeps now and then. Let me tell you that both hubby and I racked our brains and recruited our friends’ help with arguments against having a house dog. One friend went so far as to suggest that it would be good for me “to have someone to talk to.” Well! Have you ever tried to carry on a conversation with a dog? Let me inform you that it’s pretty one-sided. I talk, and she barks. (The dog barks, not my friend.) We thought we had won the debate over whether a dog should live with us when finally, one day, you’ll never believe who moved in. That’s right. It was a dog. We were pretty skeptical until she smiled at us and those brown eyes gazed into ours. Smiles and brown eyes aside, we weren’t truly convinced. We wondered if the dog should return forthwith to the animal adoption agency before further disrupting our peaceful life. Of course, we would never say that in front of the dog. We often found ourselves huddled in the dining room or on the back porch, wondering what our next move should be. You have probably already figured out the rest of the story. The dog (her name is Bea) has moved permanently into our home and into our hearts. Bea has become a member of the family. We walk her and feed her and care for her and love every minute. As it turns out, she is pretty fun to talk to. In fact, she always agrees with me. We love that little dog! WE

Rejuvenation Nation Surgical and Nonsurgical Options for Vaginal Problems By Kylie Gumpert
The recent popularity of vaginal rejuvenation procedures has made the vagina quite a hot topic of discussion nowadays. These surgical and nonsurgical procedures are meant to do everything from stemming the tide of urinary incontinence to enhancing sexual pleasure to altering genital structure. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI), the most prevalent form of incontinence among women, affects an estimated 15 million adult women in the United States. Stress incontinence happens when a certain activity, such as coughing, sneezing, running, or heavy lifting and puts pressure on your bladder, resulting in involuntary loss of urine. Treatment options can relieve this condition and improve quality of life. Although we might not talk about it much, many women in the middle and later stages of life experience a decrease in sensation and satisfaction during intimacy. Some of us would call the experience downright painful! There are many reasons for this, including the hormonal changes that accompany aging, the physical changes caused by childbirth, or a significant weight loss. If you have noticed these changes in yourself and are no longer satisfied with your intimate experience, don’t despair. Many treatments can help you regain your spark. Childbirth, aging, and significant weight loss may cause the muscles of the vaginal area to become stretched out, resulting in less sensitivity during intimacy. As we age, our tissues naturally become less elastic, so it’s harder for them to bounce back. Procedures such as vaginal reconstruction or vaginal rejuvenation can tighten the vaginal muscles. Vaginal procedures can also alter the physical appearance of the genitals, should you so desire. Doing your research is essential! For surgical treatments, find a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has vast experience in vaginal reconstruction. You might also want a board-certified gynecologist who has additional training in urogynecology. Vaginoplasty addresses the problem of vaginal laxity. The procedure involves a surgeon using a laser as a scalpel to remove excess vaginal tissue and tighten the muscles. The procedure may take up to two hours. Recovery may be as long as several weeks of healing before intimacy can be re-introduced. By week six, the stitches are typically dissolved. Following a postoperative visit with your surgeon, you will be cleared for normal sexual activity. Many women seek vaginal reconstruction to address issues inside the vagina. Some women are also concerned with the external portion of their genitals. Surgical procedures can address this, as well. For example, if you feel that your labia are too large and are getting in the way of enjoying intimacy, you might consider a labiaplasty. This procedure removes extra tissue to change the size or shape of the labia. Typically, this short
16
outpatient procedure can be performed under general anesthesia, with a relatively short recovery time. A clitoral hood reduction might be done along with a labiaplasty to avoid a “top heavy” look after the labia minora are reduced. The American Society of Plastic Surgeon notes that these two procedures have a satisfaction rate over 90 percent. A labia majoraplasty involves trimming excess skin from the outer, hair-bearing labia majora. Monsplasty reduces fat in the area directly above the vagina called the mons pubis. For this procedure, a surgeon will use liposuction and will sometimes remove excess skin and tissue to make the area flatter. If you want vaginal rejuvenation but are shying away from surgery, you might consider vaginal rejuvenation through nonsurgical procedures. Such options include radiofrequency and laser treatments that heat the tissue to slightly damage it, which stimulates healing as well as collagen production. Over time and after multiple treatments, these methods are said to cause tightening of the vagina and surrounding areas. The Juliet laser treatment uses a laser to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the body. The Juliet treatment reverses the signs of aging and childbirth and may also treat stress urinary incontinence and vaginal dryness. Although some women commonly need two or three treatments, the Juliet procedure only takes 15 minutes—with no recovery or downtime. FemTouch Vaginal Laser Rejuvination addresses vaginal conditions including atrophy and dryness, stress urinary incontinence, and vaginal laxity, by promoting the remodeling of the vaginal mucous layer using stateof-the-art CO2 laser technology. The fractional CO2 laser beams are applied along the vaginal wall, resulting in new vaginal tissue growth. This procedure requires just 2–4 short outpatient treatments. MonaLisa Touch, another laser treatment, is marketed specifically toward menopausal women or women

suffering from vaginal atrophy. It stimulates a healing response and collagen production. Patients usually receive three 5-minute treatments at six-week intervals. Your doctor will determine if follow-up treatments are required. ThermiVa is another noninvasive treatment for vaginal rejuvenation. The technique uses a handheld probe to deliver controlled thermal energy. The heat contracts the tissues and encourages collagen production, which assists with tissue and nerve healing. The results are a rejuvenated vaginal area, less vaginal dryness, fewer urinary issues, and enhanced intimacy. The ThermiVa procedure is conducted in three separate treatments over the course of a few months. Most patients find the treatment comfortable—some patients have even reported falling asleep during the procedure. Because the procedure requires no incisions, there is no recovery time. Patients can resume normal activities, including intimacy, immediately after each treatment. Optimal results typically develop a few months following the treatment, and most patients require a maintenance session only twice per year. If you are a woman battling decreased sexual desire, you may have noticed that there are not a lot of products on the market targeted toward women’s intimate needs. The O-shot (yes, that’s “O” for “orgasm”) is designed specifically for women. The O-shot is a nonsurgical procedure that stimulates a woman’s intimate desire. This procedure extracts platelets from the patient’s own blood. The platelets are then placed in a syringe and injected just inside the vaginal area, near the clitoris. (An anesthetic cream is applied to the area prior to the injection.) The platelets act as a stimulant to grow new cells, making the vaginal area more sensitive to touch. The overall

effects of the O-shot typically last a minimum of 18 months. The G-Shot consists of an injectable cosmetic filler, much like the ones used by cosmetic surgeons or aestheticians to increase fullness in the face or lips. With the G-Shot, the filler is injected into a woman’s G-spot, increasing its size and, ostensibly, her chances of greater sexual satisfaction. If you’re considering vaginal rejuvenation or are simply curious, start by talking to your doctor, gynecologist, obstetrician, or urologist about what you are experiencing and how vaginal rejuvenation might help. As with many other types of surgery, many patients begin with less invasive treatment options before moving on to surgical procedures. Talk to a physical therapist about noninvasive treatments like biofeedback or specialized exercises that it might make sense to try first. If your symptoms are not resolved to your satisfaction, it might be time to look into more invasive vaginal rejuvenation procedures. Check with your insurance company to see what may be covered for these procedures. If you are experiencing symptoms such as a reduced desire for intimacy, pain during intimacy, or urinary incontinence with otherwise good health, you are most likely a good candidate for vaginal rejuvenation. Sensuality and intimacy are very important parts of life. Don’t let insecurity or awkwardness keep you from happiness and satisfaction. Whatever you choose, don’t suffer in silence! Talk to your doctor about your vaginal symptoms today. Plumbing 101 Keep Your Home Running Smoothly By Robyn V. Powell
If you’re like most homeowners, you probably don’t give much thought to your plumbing system— until it’s too late. Plumbing emergencies can be extremely stressful, even leaving you stranded without running water until a plumber arrives. By arming yourself with a few maintenance tips and knowing when it’s time to call in a professional plumber, you can prolong the life of your pipes and prevent a plumbing disaster. To keep your plumbing system running efficiently, it’s important to nip even small problems in the bud. Clogged drains, the most common plumbing problem, are more than just a nuisance. Backed-up water puts strain on pipes, shortening their lives. Harsh, chemical-based cleaners can corrode pipes, are harmful to the environment, and don’t always eliminate the clog. Repeated chemical applications over time can result in a leaky pipe. Before reaching for chemicals, try pouring down half a cup of salt followed by boiling water. If a clog persists, it’s time to call a plumber to snake the line—this will completely remove the hair or grease causing the plug. To prevent clogs, carefully monitor what goes down your household drains. Keep food and grease out of kitchen drains, hair out of bathroom drains, and everything besides sewage and toilet paper out of toilets. One of the main plumbing culprits is hard water. Just like the arteries running through our bodies, the pipes in
our homes are subject to plaque buildup. While consuming minerals such as magnesium and calcium naturally found in water is not harmful to our health, these minerals can condense within pipes and damage plumbing fixtures. A telltale sign of mineral buildup is white or greenish residue at the base of your faucet handles. Modern homes with copper or PVC piping are at lower risk for buildup problems than older homes with steel pipes; however, hard water buildup can still damage and shorten the lives of your fixtures and appliances. The most effective method of preventing hard water damage is to have a plumber install a water softener to your home water supply. This removes minerals at the source, so they won’t be distributed through your plumbing system. If you live in an older home or are considering purchasing one, it’s wise to have a professional plumber evaluate the type and ›››

condition of the existing plumbing. Nearly all homes built before 1980 contain lead in the plumbing system. Lead can leach into drinking water through corroded plumbing material, and no amount of lead consumption is considered safe, especially for children. In 2014, the Safe Drinking Water Act prohibited use of plumbing material that is not lead free and mandated the maximum allowable lead content of pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings, and fixtures providing residential water for human consumption to 0.25 percent. Replacing older pipes is a big job that is best left to professional plumbers. If you do update your plumbing, make sure the renovations will bring the house fully up to code. Take the opportunity during any remodeling to inspect newly exposed pipes. When you open up walls and floors and expose pipes, it’s the perfect time to ask a plumber to inspect the existing pipes and let you know if they should be replaced. When remodeling, keep in mind that creating easy access to plumbing can save you money later on—it’s cheaper and easier to replace an exposed pipe than one buried behind drywall. If you plan ahead, plumbing access panels can be incorporated into your design. Prevent shower leaks by installing a fully waterproof shower system. In older showers, replace cracked grout and seal regularly. Keep shower water warm with regular maintenance of your water heater. If your water heater is leaking, not heating properly, older than 10 years, or dinging your energy bill, it could be time for a new heater. Ask potential plumbers if they are licensed, bonded, and insured, and be sure to request a list of references who can attest to the quality of their work. Most large plumbing jobs require a permit to comply with local building codes. It is beneficial to have your plumber secure a building permit before the work is done. This will ensure that any plumbers you hire are licensed and will also hold them liable for any work that doesn’t meet code. It’s advisable to get a second or third opinion before hiring a plumber. You count on your plumbing system to keep clean water flowing into your home and waste flowing out on demand. By taking proactive steps to care for your plumbing, you ensure uninterrupted comfort and safety for your family while protecting your biggest investment—your home. Out and About
Floor Craft’s Polished Image A Reflection of Treasured Ethics By Frances Diana Hayden
Like his father and grandfather before him, Mark Strauch is the proud owner of Floor Craft. Mark credits his company’s ongoing success, in part, to his family’s business ethics in dealing with customers: honesty, integrity, and respect. These precepts have been passed down from one generation to the next since 1942, and they have led to a loyal customer base that is made up of 90 percent referrals and repeat customers. Mark believes it is the caliber of his employees that makes the Floor Craft business shine. He lavishly praises the people he works with— everyone from the warehouse staff to the showroom employees to the independent installers. Perhaps his profound admiration for the essential work they do stems from the fact that he began sweeping floors in the warehouse at a tender age. From the ground up (literally!) and throughout his apprenticeship, Mark learned all aspects of the business before purchasing it from his parents, Bob and Sheila Strauch, in 1998. His parents had purchased the company from his grandfather in 1977. Now, Mark and his wife, Kristine, have their children, Kelli and Ethan, working in the wings, preparing to embrace the legacy that awaits them. “Our goal is to help prospective customers obtain the right product and to work within their price range,” Mark emphasizes. “We are here to listen to our customers and help guide them to the best solution for their budget and needs. We are not simply trying to sell them something! We learn what they are trying to achieve so they will be proud of the end result.” If you are ready to refresh your flooring, visit the Floor Craft showroom, located at 5855 North Academy Boulevard, near Vickers Drive. The showroom features a kaleidoscope of colors and designs of carpet, wood, vinyl, tile, laminate, and luxury vinyl tile. “We purchase and stock a large amount of carpet and tile because it enables us to offer better prices,” Mark explains. “There is so much more than just selling the product. Each sale generates an inordinate amount of coordination and a flurry of activity behind the scenes.” Floor Craft serves a variety of customers, as Mark points out. The market mix, he says, is about 40 percent builders/new construction, 40 percent remodeling projects, 15 percent retail, and 5 percent commercial properties. “Over the years, we have nurtured our key accounts, resulting in lasting relationships that have been mutually beneficial,” Mark shares. “An example: George Hess, who founded Vantage homes in 1978, had been

The Floor Craft a longtime customer. Our alliance with Vantage Family: Mark, Kelli, continues today, as have our collaborations with Kristine, and Ethan Goetzmann Homes since 1996 and Acuff Homes since 1982. Floor Craft has also enjoyed a 35-year history with Barbara and Johnny Garcia, of B and J Construction.” Floor Craft’s original location was at 21st Street and Colorado Avenue. “My grandfather, Larry Strauch, had purchased the building from Micci Grocers, and we have interacted for generations with Ed Micci Construction,” Mark says. “However, after many years at that site, we knew we had to move to another location in order to grow our business. By 1998, Colorado Springs was starting to thrive again. We moved to our present site in 2002, after having spent four years determining how to position ourselves financially.” Like many businesses, Floor Craft had to weather the downturn in the economy between 2007 and 2012. “It does not always go perfectly, but we strive to be resilient during difficult times and to treat everyone with respect,” Mark asserts. “As my father said, ‘You cannot make a decision based solely upon the almighty dollar.’” “It is the people of Floor Craft who have been an integral part of achieving such success,” Mark says. “Last summer, Jim Shuler retired after having worked here for 45 years. Our service manager, Steve Webb, has been here for 36 years. His father, Bill, worked for both my grandfather and father before he retired. We are fortunate to have family and Scott Haring, as our business operations manager. Jerry, Desi, Dru, and the warehouse guys make a great effort in pulling together all aspects of the jobs, and I appreciate all that Dean, our maintenance man, oversees.” Mark feels that he is indebted to Floor Craft and its legacy: the ethics instilled in him by his grandfather and father, his treasured family of employees, and the time-tested relationships he has sustained with his customers and business associates. You are cordially invited to visit the Floor Craft showroom at 5855 North Academy Boulevard, in Colorado Springs. Good Looks
An Ounce of Prevention Women’s Health Care
By Loretta McCollum
As women, we tend to put others’ needs above our own. We’re accustomed to assuming the roles of supporter, nurturer, and comforter. Though our dedication to others is laudable, we need to remember that it’s important to take care of ourselves. An annual physical exam is a simple step toward achieving that goal. A yearly well-woman visit can detect potential health problems and provide baseline information that, when compared against future tests, may provide early detection of serious medical issues. Many physicians agree that seeing patients on a regular basis allows them to put their patients’ symptoms in better context. Regular visits also provide a more complete health history, helping physicians give better diagnoses. A thorough exam includes obtaining height, weight, and blood pressure measurements; a recent medical history; and a review of current medications. Your physician will also listen to your heart and lungs and check your ears, nose, and throat. A pelvic exam will be performed to check the uterus and ovaries for fibroids and cysts. Tobacco and alcohol use will be discussed. Depending on your medical history, cholesterol, blood sugar, and hormone levels may be tested. It’s important to note that this exam is not one-size-fits-all. Age and medical history are factors in determining what the exam entails. Pap smears, during which cell samples are harvested from the cervix to detect abnormalities, were once routinely performed yearly,
but the new standard is every three years, beginning at age 21. Women over 30 who have had three consecutive normal tests may only need to be tested every five years. Women older than 65 years who have not had an abnormal test in 10 years may no longer need to be tested. The theory on mammograms has also been reevaluated. The American Cancer Society recommends that annual mammograms begin at age 40 to 45 years, depending on your personal history (check with your doctor). That’s not all that’s changed! Many of us equated the mammogram experience to having a car tire run over a breast and park there for several minutes. No more! Today’s 3D digital mammography uses significantly less pressure and provides a much clearer image. A surprising number of women have heart attacks every year. Women should obtain a baseline cardiac profile, ideally at age 20. A full cardiac profile includes a blood test to determine cholesterol,

triglyceride, and blood sugar levels, as well as a lipid profile. A stress test is performed, as well as an electrocardiogram, which measures the heart’s electrical activity. After determining a baseline, blood sugar and cholesterol levels should be checked every 3–4 years. Thyroid function can greatly affect a woman’s health. The thyroid regulates metabolism, energy, and mood. If this gland is overactive, in a condition known as hyperthyroidism, women may experience symptoms like anxiety, sweating, and weight loss. Conversely, hypothyroidism is when the thyroid doesn’t produce enough hormones, leading to loss of energy, depression, and weight gain. Both conditions can be treated with medication to regulate hormone production. Thyroid levels should be checked beginning at age 35, and every five years after that. Few treatable conditions affect a woman’s quality of life more than hormone levels. Women approaching menopause should have their hormone levels checked regularly. Low levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone can lead to abnormal menstrual cycles, infertility, loss of bone density, fatigue, irritability, weight gain, low libido…need I go on? Hormone replacement therapy can alleviate many of these symptoms, though it is not without some health risks. Your doctor will recommend testing options and explain the risks and benefits of hormone therapy. Low hormone levels, combined with menopause, can lead to osteoporosis (low bone density). Women most at risk are those who are post-menopausal, have taken steroidal medications, or are aged 65 and older. Osteoporosis is most often diagnosed with dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA scan), a painless procedure where the patient lies on a table while a scanner passes over, focusing on the spine and hip. If a positive diagnosis is determined, your doctor will discuss treatment options. A discussion about preventative health care wouldn’t be complete without naming that which no one wants to name: the colonoscopy. This procedure is critical in preventing and diagnosing colorectal cancer. Before the procedure begins, the patient is given anesthesia to induce a twilight state. Physicians can remove cancerous or pre-cancerous polyps during the scope. Everyone should have a colonoscopy at age 50 and should repeat the procedure every five years. If you are overdue for any test or procedure discussed here, contact your physician. Sources for this article included healthywomen.org, heart.org, healthline.com, and health.harvard.edu. 100% AgeLess Chiropractic Care and Holistic Healing
By Brenda Gracely
Is your lack of energy keeping you from doing what you want to do? Are you concerned about health issues like hormone imbalance, excess weight, cholesterol levels, vitamin deficiency, or inflammation disorders? Dr. Deborah Riekeman at 100% AgeLess can help! Her philosophy is to treat each patient as she would like to be treated. “Everyone is unique,” she explains, “and each visit to my office is a very personal one-on-one experience.” Dr. Riekeman is a chiropractor and a holistic healer who has spent the last 30 years helping her patients find drug-free paths to better health. Her chiropractic care includes a structural analysis to make sure the nerve supply is functioning properly. She also offers nutrition counseling, allergy and hormone testing, and help with weight loss. Patients seek her advice in all areas of wellness. At an initial appointment with Dr. Riekeman, patients can expect to receive answers to a lot of questions. “First, I set up time to talk with my patient, learn about her health and symptoms, and answer her questions. I always ask how I can help and find out what is most important to her.” If patients have had blood work done
in the previous few months, Dr. Riekeman recommends they bring their results to their first appointment. “So much can be learned about you through blood, urine, or saliva tests,” she explains. “Muscle testing is another tool that I use to further individualize a treatment plan. We’ll discuss the natural point of view, and I will recommend diet changes or supplements, if necessary.” “I have seen Dr. Riekeman for ailments ranging from arthritis to hormone changes—things I never dreamed a chiropractor could help me with,” reports

At first it was a stab in the dark; would this form of exposure work or would I need to look for another venue to get my services noticed? I wholeheartedly recommend advertising in this publication.” —Pauli Hubbard, CFP with Creative Financial Services, Inc.

patient Lisa. “She knows me, she knows my body, and she knows what’s going on, sometimes even before I do.” One of the services Dr. Riekeman offers is the painless, fat-melting Zerona laser. This low-level laser is applied to the outside of the skin in areas like the waist, hips, and thighs. Once the underlying fat is liquefied by the laser, the lymphatic system can naturally eliminate it along with other toxins in the body. The usual protocol consists of six 40-minute sessions within a two-week period. Four ion cleanse foot baths are also included to help remove waste from the body. For patients who want to lose over 30 pounds through a weight loss program, Dr. Riekeman often recommends an accelerated weight loss system called Essential Protein. “It allows weight loss to be monitored through lean muscle measurements weekly,” Dr. Riekeman adds. As we all know, emotional stress can interfere with physical function. Neck pain and fibromyalgia are physical conditions that are often connected to emotional dysfunction. Dr. Riekeman uses a program called Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) to help remove a patient’s emotional blocks to physical healing. “NET is not a ‘talk it out’ experience but an adjusting process that ‘unhooks’ the emotional event from the physical symptoms, thus allowing healing to occur,” says Dr. Riekeman. “I use kinesiology (muscle testing) to determine whether it is necessary for each patient.”
Dr. Riekeman assists many patients with their nutritional needs, which can have a large impact on a person’s overall health and well-being. Her three post-graduate degrees in nutrition have equipped her with many tools to improve her patients’ health. Nutritional analysis is used to find out how to avoid fatigue, to determine how to use nutritional supplements effectively. Saliva tests are often used to determine whether hormone levels are balanced and whether the adrenal and thyroid glands are functioning properly. This can be a particularly important test during perimenopause, when a woman’s hormone levels can undergo drastic changes. Many people take either too many supplements or the wrong supplements. Bev has been a patient of Dr. Riekeman’s for more than 10 years, and she reports positive results. “She is not just a chiropractor doing manual spinal adjustments—she looks at the whole body,” Bev shares. “She has treated my scoliosis and helped me lose weight through nutritional analysis. When I mentioned that I was experiencing heart palpitations, she explained to me how misaligned vertebrae can affect our total well-being. Just a few chiropractic adjustments to my spine, and my palpitations were gone! I feel free to see her for just about anything.” 100% AgeLess is located at 708 North Tejon Street, in Colorado Springs. Are You Apathetic?
Make a Decision to Re-Engage or Move On!
Time and again, I see people who are not happy, not engaged, not truly present for their day-to-day life. I think, as a society, we have become accustomed to living at a mediocre level. We don’t like to rock the boat; we are afraid of too much change. Often we tell ourselves that, even though we may not love what we have created for ourselves in regard to our relationships, our work environment, or our home environment, what we know is much less scary than making the decision to move toward something we don’t know. I think that the general attitude of apathy has become especially prevalent and almost disastrous in the workplace. People continue to go to jobs in which they find no joy. They do the bare minimum to fly under the radar, making sure not to cause a stir because they don’t want added responsibility. They become clockwatchers and make sure to use every minute of their breaks. “We may have found a cure for most evils; but we have found no remedy for the worst of them all, the apathy of human beings.” —Helen Keller The problem is really twofold. In the work environment, gone are the days when employers actually read your resume. Today, many companies utilize software to look for key words. Even smaller w

businesses weed out individuals based on what is or is not on a resume without any applicant interaction at all. Additionally, they don’t always take the time or money to invest in finding the right fit for the positions they are trying to fill or provide adequate training and support for new hires. This leads to a dissonance between the demands of the job and the ability, skills, and interest of employees. On the other side, many people are just happy to get a job— anything until something better comes along. Unfortunately, it seems that this has become a growing trend in our society: people look for a paycheck instead of a career that fuels their interests and capitalizes on their strengths. If you are in a job in which you find yourself becoming less interested and invested, it is time to try something new, or perhaps it’s just time to remember why you wanted the job in the first place. Either way, make a decision to recommit and be the best employee you can be. If you can’t do that, set a time limit for yourself to move on to another position. Don’t remain unhappy or unsatisfied. Life is too short, and there are too many options for you to stay stuck. “Apathy can be overcome by enthusiasm, and enthusiasm can only be aroused by two things: first, an ideal, which takes the imagination by storm, and second, a definite intelligible plan for carrying that ideal into practice.” —Arnold J. Toynbee

Graduation: The Next Step on Life’s Journey Take the Time to Enjoy It
Spring is a time for many exciting things. School is out soon, and the kids are looking for summer entertainment or jobs. We celebrate our mothers in May and our fathers in June. Many weddings are planned by June brides. This spring, the most exciting thing in our family is my grandson’s graduation in May. June will see him take the first steps of the journey that will be his adult life. First, he plans on completing his drivers’ education class. Once licensed, he hopes to find a car so he won’t have to rely on Mom for transportation. Or, rather, he hopes to find a job…so he will be able to afford a car…so he won’t have to rely on Mom. All are major accomplishments. He doesn’t know yet where he wants to go on to college or even how he wants to continue his education. He’s talked about a technical school or junior college to start with. He hasn’t yet indicated whether he wants to stay close to home or go somewhere else. I’ve told Mom he can stay with me and go to a junior college or tech school here. Mom has told him he has to do something…work or school or both…he can’t just stay at home. No matter what he chooses, I will miss him. He is my travel buddy. Every summer for the past 10 years, he has come to stay with me for six weeks. We choose a route for a road trip. As we come across things and places that he is interested in, we stop.
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
We’ve gone to the Museum of Nuclear Science in Albuquerque and the New Mexico Museum of Space Travel in Alamogordo. We’ve visited a salt mine in Kansas and a bottling plant in Dublin, Texas. We’ve been to several national parks, including Yellowstone, Devils Tower, Great Salt Lake, Grand Canyon, and Sand Dunes National Monument. We’ve stopped to see trains, classic cars, balls of twine, and the geographic center of the United States. His interests have changed over the years, but his sense of curiosity has remained. Nothing is more fun than driving along a two-lane highway (we try to avoid interstates, if we can) or going through a small town and having him say, “Grandma, can we stop and see that?” It may be an unusual building, a sign for a local attraction, an interesting display, or just someplace different to get food. To him and all the other kids who are graduating and commencing with the rest of their lives, I say: Enjoy every minute. Explore. Stop to see or do things. The world is waiting. I hope you all take the time to enjoy your journey. The places you’ll go, the things you’ll see…they help determine the person you’ll be. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Kymani Body Contouring A Personal Journey Turns Professional By Cheryl Lassota
There’s a reason that Robin Palma, the owner of Kymani Body Contouring, is compassionate about her clients’ success—she was once dangerously obese herself. “I come from an athletic and military family,” she says. “My dad lifted weights in his 80s! One of my brothers was a competitive body-builder and a Marine, and another played in the NFL.” During high school in Pueblo, then as a UCCS student, Robin was devoted to working out daily and maintaining a healthy diet. Despite this, she began to gain weight, and she was devastated when her weight reached almost 300 pounds. Eventually, she was diagnosed with and treated for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and her weight began to drop. Her extensive weight loss led her to research the benefits of LED light therapy as a way to tighten skin and reduce cellulite and stretch marks. Clients at Kymani Body Contouring now reap the benefits of Robin’s personal journey to find a solution to expanding fat cells. “We use a noninvasive, laserlike lipo Vevazz machine that opens fat cells with light instead of hormones,” Robin explains. “It sends the fat cells’ contents into the lymphatic system to be burned as energy. Because the process removes much of the contents from fat cells, the cells shrink.” Laser sessions with Vevazz last seven minutes, followed by 10 minutes on a whole-body vibrating platform. This forces the muscles to contract and relax dozens of times per second, increasing lymphatic drainage, circulation, and pain reduction. Vevazz can be used all over the body—on the arms, chin, belly, thighs, back, flanks, or buttocks. Robin is dedicated to providing a unique and personable experience. She believes in quality over quantity, and her clients are never rushed. Though there is a waiting room, it is rarely used. Instead, appointment sessions ensure immediate access to private treatments with the same technician every time. “We are very flexible and accommodating with our customer’s schedules, from early morning to evening and on Saturdays,” Robin notes. “Clients often come in during lunch or before work. They are given their tech’s cell phone number so that they can contact the technician during off hours and without having to call the office. Our technicians have the autonomy to make decisions, which contributes to the excellent customer service we provide to our clients.” One of those techs is Tyra Hutton, Robin’s business partner. A busy mom of three, Tyra moved to Colorado Springs from Oregon. She works part time with El Paso County and volunteers with the fire department. Her comforting, kind manner is reassuring to her clients. “She doesn’t know any strangers!” Robin says with a smile.
34
Client Jasmine is satisfied with her treatment. “I did three sessions, and this is worth every penny,” she posted on Facebook. “They are flexible with scheduling and make you feel very comfortable while doing the procedure. Benefits are explained extensively, so you know exactly what you need to do in order to accomplish maximum results! I would highly recommend to anyone who is close to reaching their goals!” Kymani Body Contouring therapy can provide quick results, and motivation is so helpful to becoming healthier. As Robin points out, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” She stresses that, no matter what people do to lose weight, they must maintain lifestyles conducive to weight loss if they want to keep the weight off. Clients who eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and intake an adequate amount of water will see the best results. Robin and her husband, Chris, are devoted to a daily gym routine, and they take care to incorporate exercise into their six-year-old son’s life. “Over the years, I’ve been amazed by the body transformations and health benefits people get from adding exercise and eating healthy,” Robin states. As she realistically reminds clients on Facebook, “Fat cells hold steady in adulthood. If you’re eating high-calorie meals every day and not burning very many calories, your fat cells swell, resulting in weight gain. When you lose weight, your fat cells shrink, waiting for you to pick up a bag of chips and expand again!” Her client, Len, appreciates Robin’s attitude. “Robin helped me look at my body differently and set goals,” says the Colorado Springs grandmother. Robin is excited that the medical community is recognizing the anti-aging benefits of LED light therapy. “Not only does it help one lose inches and weight, it aids in collagen production, helps repair damaged skin, and reduces wrinkles and acne,” she says. “It also encourages nerve regeneration and can provide relief to those suffering from neuropathy.” Her clients include local military and university personnel, physicians, athletes, and students. Kymani Body Contouring is located at 1301 South 8th Street, Suite 101, in Colorado Springs. To reach Robin and Tyra, call 719-505-8748. Vision for Life Treatments for Common Eye Problems
By Connie Keck
For most of us, sight is the most vital of all the senses. Our sight allows us to understand and navigate the world. If you want your eyes to serve you well, it’s important to serve them, too, with annual eye exams and prompt treatment of any symptoms. Many people experience eye problems from time to time. Some of these problems are minor and don’t last too long. However, there are some serious eye problems that can cause major damage to the eyes, including permanent loss of vision. Even if you take great care of your eyes, they’re just like any other body part—problems tend to increase with age. Some of the most common eye and vision conditions include astigmatism, myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), cataracts, detached retinas, and corneal injuries. While some of these conditions are more likely to occur in older people, many of them can occur at any age. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea has an irregular, oval shape. This makes objects appear stretched or distorted. The condition can occur simultaneously with myopia or hyperopia. Myopia occurs when the cornea (the front surface of the eye) is too rounded or steep or the eyeball is too long. It makes it difficult to focus on an object or detail far away or across the room. Hyperopia is the opposite—it occurs when
the cornea is too flat or the eye is too short. For people who are farsighted, objects at a distance are clear, but objects up close are blurry. Astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia are often corrected with corrective lenses (glasses or contacts). For a more permanent solution to these vision problems, some people choose LASIK surgery. With this procedure, an ophthalmologist uses a laser to reshape the cornea. This procedure is quick and essentially painless (no stitches required), and it provides rapid and permanent results—most patients have no further need for corrective lenses. A common myth regarding LASIK surgery is that the effect wears off. This is not true. The changes that the laser makes are permanent and will last indefinitely in the vast majority of cases. LASEK surgery is a similar method of laser eye surgery that is available for those who are unable to have LASIK treatment because their corneas are too flat or too thin. Smile surgery is a minimally invasive, bladeless form of keyhole laser eye surgery.

Smile surgery is suitable for individuals with or without astigmatism. A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of one or both eyes that prevents light from reaching the retina. Cataracts grow slowly. Over time, they will reduce a person’s ability to read, drive, and perform day-to-day tasks. Most cataracts form naturally as we age because of changes in the protein and fibers in the lens of the eye. Cataract surgery is one of the most common and most successful surgical procedures in the United States. Over 95 percent of cataract surgeries result in improved vision. As with any surgery, some complications can be severe, but most can be successfully treated. Your chance of developing sight-threatening complications is greater if you have another eye disease or a serious medical condition. A detached retina occurs when the retina gets pulled away from its original position at the center of the eye. If you have a detached retina, you’ll need surgery to repair it, preferably within days of the diagnosis. The type of procedure your surgeon recommends will depend on several factors, including how severe the detachment is. Depending on the severity of your condition, your vision may take several months to improve. Some people recover all of their lost vision; some people do not. The cornea acts as a barrier against dirt, germs, and other particles that can harm the eye. The cornea also plays a key role in vision by helping focus the light that comes into your eyes. The cornea is responsible for 65–75 percent of the eye’s total focusing power. If the cornea suffers a minor injury or scratch, it usually heals on its own. However, if you have a deep injury or a corneal disease, you could experience pain in the eye, sensitivity to light, reduced or blurred vision, inflammation in the eye, headaches, or nausea. Treatments vary for a corneal injury and might include antibiotic ointments or steroids. It is important to maintain the health of your eyes. Annual exams, along with the advice and counsel of your ophthalmologist, are recommended. With some eye problems, prompt treatment is vital for saving your vision. If you feel that your eyes are not working properly, don’t delay—call your ophthalmologist right away. Summer Is for Grilling Is Your Grill Ready for the Season?
By Anne Yankus
The weather is finally consistently warm, and we’re all ready to spend more time outside. With Father’s Day just around the corner, now is the perfect time to look into upgrading your grill! Before settling on a simple cast-iron charcoal or propane model, take the time to explore all the options out there. One of the newest models to hit the market within the last 10 years is wood pellet grills. Pellet grills give you both the convenience of a gas-powered grill and the rich flavor of meat smoked over a wood-fire grill. To put it simply, pellet grills use electricity to burn manufactured wood pellets. Because they are so easy to use, pellet grills are quickly becoming one of the grilling industry’s hottest trends. One model that’s making a comeback is the ceramic grill, also known as a Japanese kamado. As a classic example of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” these charcoal-fueled grills are modern versions of a 3,000-year-old design. Though they are referred to in English as “grills,” ceramic units function best as smokers, roasters, or outdoor ovens. They have the added benefit of being easy to start in all wind and weather conditions (because of their insulated nature). With naturally low airflow, ceramic smokers can retain over 80 percent of your meat’s moisture. Another grill that’s great for cooking up juicy meats is the infrared grill. Traditional gas and charcoal grills function by cooking meat through natural convection, which can cause your

meat to dry out. Infrared grills, on the other hand, use gas or electricity to evenly heat a solid surface. This heat then radiates into your food. With less airflow, infrared units function more like an electric stovetop and keep your food from drying out. Also like a stovetop, infrared grills have adjustable heat. If grilling at home isn’t really your thing, but you love grilling at a tailgate or campsite, you can choose from many portable units. From tiny units that will fit in a backpack to a collapsible full-size grill on wheels, the camping stove and grill market has never had better selection. While you won’t find anything as elaborate as the wood pellet or ceramic models in a portable unit, these little gas, charcoal, or electric models get the job done anytime, anywhere. Speaking of gas, charcoal, and electric—which one is the superior grill fuel? Naturally, each type has its pros and cons,

so the answer is a matter of personal preference. Of course, certain models only work with certain fuel types (for example, wood pellets are only electric; ceramic grills only use charcoal), so be sure to make your decision before you purchase your grill. Gas grills are best for cooks who want to be able to flip a switch and start grilling right away. They require very little prep or clean-up. What you gain in convenience, however, you generally lose in savory smoke flavor. Gas grills also tend to be more expensive. Charcoal grills are for the true pit master. If your primary reason for grilling is enjoying the flavor that comes from smoking meat, then charcoal is for you. Of course, you have to wait for it—a charcoal grill requires the patience to get the coals lit, the time to get it preheated, and considerable clean-up afterwards. Charcoal grills are cheap up front but expensive to maintain because of the ongoing cost of charcoal briquettes. Last (and probably least, if you’re a grilling purist) is the electric grill. Like gas grills, they’re easy to get started and cleaned up. Unlike gas grills, you won’t get even a hint of smoky flavor from electric-grilled meat. Most purely electric grills are purchased by people who live in places that prohibit gas or open-flame grills for fire safety reasons. No grill assembly is complete without accessories, and there are so many to choose from! Besides a high-quality brush and scraper (which you should definitely get), there are also lighters, thermometers, propane-level indicators, and even LED lights for your late-night grilling sessions. If you really want to go fancy, there are also whole outdoor kitchen assemblies that can be installed in your yard. Some folks will go with the relatively simple fire pit, grill, and brick oven combo. Some will go so far as installing an entire kitchen outside, complete with stainless steel countertops, an outdoor range, drawers, cabinets, and even a television. With so many choices on the market, you’ve got no excuse to end up with a grill that doesn’t cook your meat to your liking. Shop around and join the modern world in barbecue heaven! Positive Perspective
The Ripple Effect Your Choices Impact Those Around You For years, I would jokingly say that “I live in a cave.” I have run this magazine, with the help of my incredibly dedicated staff, for 32 years. The beginning years consisted of 80- to 90-hour work weeks, all-nighters to make deadlines, and family and friends being put on the “back burner.” I would work, eat, and sleep Women’s Edition. “Follow your passion, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice, and, above all, don’t let anyone limit your dreams.” —Donovan Bailey Through all of this, what I did not realize was the effect that it would have on all of the people in my life. I failed to take into account the ripple effect. “The idea that everything is purposeful really changes the way you live. To think that everything that you do has a ripple effect, that every word that you speak, every action that you make affects other people and the planet.” —Victoria Moran Throughout life, we all make decisions to embark on new adventures and challenges. It may be a new business, a marriage, starting a family, getting a divorce, moving to a new home or a new state, or changing careers. What I now realize is that all of these

choices have had a ripple effect on not only those who we know, but those people who they know. The leap that I have made is gaining the understanding that every decision I make will have “consequences.” What I choose and what I chose will permeate through every relationship that I have. It will also have a ripple effect on all of the people who they have relationships with. For many of us, the word “consequences” has a negative connotation. I have learned that, every day, we have the ability to make a positive or a negative impact on those who we come into contact with. So, what are my “consequences?” When I started this magazine, my goal was to produce a positive, uplifting publication. My hope was to leave our readers in a better place than they were before they read Women’s Edition. I am hoping that even though “I lived in a cave,” the ripple effect made everyone that I had contact with a little bit happier. A little bit better. “When we focus on leading a passionate, meaningful life, we are also inadvertently creating a spectacular ripple effect of inspiration in the lives around us. When one person follows a dream, tries something new, or takes a daring leap, everyone nearby feels their passionate energy; and before too long, they are making their own daring leaps while simultaneously inspiring others.” —Unknown
