Back in 1986… Points of Interest
Thirty-two years ago this month, the first Women’s Edition magazine hit the streets. My goal was to help small business owners talk to you, our readers. Back then, women made or influenced 80 percent of all buying decisions. Today, that percentage is up to 85 percent. Over the years, I have been asked hundreds of times why I started Women’s Edition. I thought I’d take our 32nd anniversary to share the story with all of you. The inspiration for Women’s Edition came from my own experience of trying to reach you. When I was newly married in 1976, my late husband, Jim, decided to go into private practice as a mental health therapist. At the ripe old age of 21, I was put in charge of advertising. In the first year, I spent enough money to buy a house (well, to buy a house back then). It didn’t work. The second year, I went to the library to figure out what I was doing wrong. I discovered that I was doing just about EVERYTHING wrong. I did what most businesses do. That is, I “tried” all different types of media—television, billboards, radio, and newspaper. The experts didn’t agree on much, but they did agree on two things: 1) If you don’t have a Coke or Pepsi budget, do print. 2) Whatever you do, do it consistently. Well, back in the day, pretty much the only print available was the daily newspaper, so that is where our dollars went…lots and lots of our dollars. It worked so well that Jim was seeing way too many patients on a daily and weekly basis. To save our marriage, we closed his office, and he got a fulltime counseling job where he saw 22 patients a week instead of the 60+ he was doing in private practice. I got an 8-to-5 job selling copiers. After a few months of doing this, I found myself talking to business owners about what to do and what not to do with their advertising dollars. The frustrations regarding advertising for small business owners back then was strong. It is even stronger today. In August of 1985, I announced to Jim that I was going to start a magazine. He thought I was nuts. He was probably right! But here we are, 32 years later. A huge thank you goes out to all of our readers and advertisers. Additional thanks to our support staff, copy editor, writers, and distribution staff. I also thank Roxy Orr, my Operations Manager (30 years with the magazine), and Erin Lanza, my Art and Editorial Director (14 years). Roxy and Erin make it happen every month. I couldn’t do this without them! I am truly blessed. Thank you all. See you next month!

The Best of Warm Weather Dressing Embrace the Summer Frock
By Holly Bell
Summer is here, and we want to spend our time out in the lovely weather that we’ve been waiting for all winter and spring. Who has time to put together complicated outfits? For quick summer dressing, nothing looks as pulled-together as the perfect summer dress. Here are some hints to help you find the dress that will be your favorite go-to item this season. First, decide what silhouette you are most comfortable wearing. If you are svelte, a skimming sheath dress would be perfect for you. If you are pear-shaped, a fit and flare shape might be the most flattering. If you have an enviable waistline, a dress with a defined waist and perhaps a belt would look good. My favorite shape of all time is the chemise or shift dress. It falls straight from the shoulders and skims over the body in a straight line that is both comfortable and forgiving. If you want a more defined waistline in a shift dress, you can always belt it. Once you know the shape to look for, you can narrow your focus and make your dress hunt much easier. Interesting sleeve shapes are a hot trend right now. A threequarter length sleeve looks great on everyone and is actually quite slimming. Long sleeves sometimes create a color block that makes you look square. Breaking up that color block with a three-

quarter sleeve is a great trick. You can also look for sleeveless dresses in the stores during the summer. They can be very pretty on the right person but are sometimes impractical. Remember— sleeveless dresses mean cold shoulders, so you must always have a jacket or sweater handy for those air-conditioned restaurants! Length in dresses is no longer an issue. Whatever length looks good on you is the best length. Of course, we have all seen a woman in a too-short dress who cannot possibly remain dignified sitting down. A little above the knee is as short as I would recommend. A casual summer dress in a knee length looks cute with those simple tennis shoes that are everywhere right now. I am not talking about a heavier athletic shoe, but a more lightweight summer tennis shoe. A longer midi-dress looks great

Stop in today! with a sandal, a flat, a little kitten heel, or a platform. Designers are using great fabrications for summer. Nothing beats the lightweight stretch knits for a comfortable and packable dress. Then there are those sheer, floaty fabrics that come in floral prints for a gorgeous summer look…and, with a little ingenuity, that dress can be worn several ways to stretch your vacation wardrobe. On cool nights, add stretch jeans under a shorter dress and it becomes a tunic. Take a casual cotton blend dress, throw it over swimwear, and voilà! Watch it become a swimsuit cover-up. Some women avoid dresses because they’re self-conscious about their bare legs, especially early in the summer, when those legs have been hiding from the sun all winter. Don’t worry—you don’t need a dark tan to look great in summer dresses. If you do want a little more color, you can investigate self-tanning products. These products have improved a lot over the years and no longer give you that orange look of the past. My personal favorite is Airbrush Legs, which is a spray tanner that really covers flaws. If you’d rather have a professional apply your tanner, check with your favorite spa. If you just can’t get comfortable with bare legs, you can still wear summer dresses! Go for a long dress that lands just above the ankle. It’s a very romantic look, especially when paired with sandals. Add a large-brimmed summer hat, and you will look and feel beautiful! A summer frock needs a little jewelry to offset the simplicity of the look. Chokers are a hot trend this summer. Longer necklaces are still popular and are perfect to complete the long, sleek look of a one-piece outfit. Earrings are really fun for this summer, including oversized baubles and attention-grabbing designs like fringy earrings or shoulder dusters linked together. Now that summer is finally here, let’s enjoy it by simplifying our everyday fashion decisions. Throw on that little summer frock and get out under the beautiful blue skies and warm sun. Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE For more information, visit www.hilaryradley.com

Glaze with a powdered sugar glaze before slicing and serving with the fruit. Blueberry Crisp Mix 6 cups of rinsed blueberries with one-half cup of sugar, 2 Tablespoons of cornstarch, 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice, and a dash of salt. Pour the mixture into an 8-inch baking dish. In a bowl, mix three-fourths cup of flour with one-half cup of rolled oats, one-half teaspoon of baking powder, a dash of salt, and one-third cup of brown sugar. Use your hands to mix in 6 Tablespoons of soft butter until you get lumps and crumbles. Pour the mixture on top of the fruit. Bake at 375 degrees for 50–60 minutes. Serve warm with ice cream. Rhubarb Pie Put 5 cups of washed, trimmed, and cut rhubarb into an unbaked pie shell. In a bowl, blend together 2 eggs, onehalf teaspoon of nutmeg, one and one-half cups of sugar, 3 Tablespoons of flour, and a dash of salt. Pour the mixture over the rhubarb. Top with a second pie pastry crust, flute, and vent. Place the pie on a cookie sheet to catch overflow. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes, then turn down the oven to 350 degrees and bake for another 45 minutes. WE

Nancy’s Boutique A Local Gem By Loretta McCollum
There are a lot of reasons to make the quick trip from Omaha to Fremont, and Nancy’s Boutique is one of the best. Nancy Hoshor launched Nancy’s Boutique, FairWay Fashions, LLC, 14 years ago. In today’s climate of big business, chain stores, and internet shopping, her business model is flourishing in Fremont’s lovely historic downtown. Stepping inside Nancy’s Boutique, you recognize that you’ve entered a modern establishment that has an appreciation for classic style and sophistication. You will most likely be met by Toby, Nancy’s threeyear-old, fluffy Coton pup, who is the unofficial store greeter and mascot. “I have customers who come in just to see Toby,” Nancy laughs. Nancy herself is behind the counter most days, greeting regular and first-time shoppers alike with a welcoming smile and lively conversation. Her shop features upscale, moderately priced clothing, jewelry, and accessories geared toward career women aged 40 and older. Sizes range from 6 to 18, though smaller sizes can be special-ordered. She regularly buys in Dallas and Las Vegas markets, and she has established long-term relationships with many of the designers featured in the store. Nancy possesses a keen sense for quality and style, and she recognizes which lines are best suited for her customers. In fact, she often buys with a specific customer in mind. She will frequently call a customer if she has a particular piece she thinks that customer would like. In addition to seeking out pieces in line with her shoppers’ preferences, she also has an appreciation for which textures and fabrics will hold up well in our midwestern climate. This level of personal attention and service is one of many things that Nancy’s customers love about the store, according to employee Deb Gartner. “They like her selection and the brands she carries,” says Deb. “She is loyal to her customers, and they know they can depend on the quality and style of the merchandise.” Nancy is proud to note that many of her customers have shopped with her for years—and that many of them have become her friends. Nancy notes that she is also very frank with her customers. When asked her opinion as to whether an item of clothing is flattering, she tells it like it is. “I will tell you, ‘I can order your size, and it will fit you,’ but if it’s not a good look, I would rather give up the sale than sell you something I don’t think is right for you.” After all, she points out, customers wearing her clothes are advertising for her, and she wants them to look good.
12
June 2018
Nancy purchases a limited number of each item, which Owner Nancy Hoshor allows her to provide a wide variety. It also means with her dog, Toby her customers aren’t wearing the same thing that everyone else is wearing. “You don’t see yourself walking down the street,” says longtime customer Rhonda Vance. Nancy’s emphasis is on traditional, not trendy, although many of her lines do have a fresh, contemporary feel. Nancy opened her boutique in 2003, but her career path was launched long before then. Her family moved to Fremont from North Dakota when Nancy was in her teens. Her love of fashion led her to model clothing on weekends. She eventually became a buyer at the now-closed Schewser’s and also at the local golf course pro shop, which is where the “FairWay” facet of the business name originated. Nancy is the sole proprietor of her shop. She serves as buyer, manager, sales clerk, and even custodian. Her work philosophy is to be fair, to be honest, and to select a career based on passion. “Do it because you love it,” she advises, “not because of how much money you can make.” This approach has served her well. She agrees that the sustainability of a brick and mortar storefront is more challenging now than ever, with so many people shopping online from the comfort of their living rooms. “Retail is a gamble,” she notes. “You roll the dice every time you walk in the door.” She maintains her customer base with personal service and loyalty, and she believes that the friendships she’s built over the years make it all worthwhile. To those thinking of following in her footsteps by opening their own businesses, she advises, “Get an education, understand finances, embrace the internet, work hard…and have a good time! Be happy, be with family, and do what you love.” Nancy’s Boutique is open in Fremont at 423 North Main Street, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Outside of those hours, you can visit Nancy’s Boutique at www. nancysfremont.com or on Facebook at Nancy’s Boutique. You can reach Nancy by phone at 402-727-4592. WE

Happy birthday, Gemini! This month, your focus will be on domestic and emotional matters. Over half of the planets are forming a Grand Square. This may create more challenging life situations, but everything will turn out to your advantage by month’s end. Health for Gemini will be wonderful, and you will feel remarkably attractive. Single Gemini may find love in spiritual places. Cancer (Jun 21–July 22) You should be able to face stormy situations. Because of the planetary positions, you maintain a sensible understanding of life and will be making decisions based on purpose and sound judgment.

Leo (July 23–Aug 22) House of Career is the strongest for Lions this month. Jupiter helps you accomplish your professional goals. You may be approaching decent opportunities in your favored field.
Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18) This month is for transformations. Changes are happening in your life. You will be content with these fluctuations, as many are beneficial to you.
Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22) Try to keep a low profile this month and avoid possible confrontations (this may be challenging). You must maintain your focus on the important issues at hand.
Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20) The presence of Mars in House of Love will make you more forceful and brave. Your personal charisma and self-assurance are positively affected by the retrograde of your love planet, Mercury.
Capricorn (Dec 23–Jan 19) House of Health is powerful, and your emphasis will be on curative measures. Your well-being can be improved by physical and spiritual exercise.
Libra (Sep 23–Oct 22) When dealing with matters of concern for relationships, remember that affection is more important than perfection. Learn to overlook minor differences with loved ones.
Aries (Mar 21–April 19) Relationships will seem lethargic and are hardly moving. You may feel disappointed at this state of affairs. Choose your attitude toward these delays with care; your attitude will determine your destiny.
Scorpio (Oct 23–Nov 21) Worldly desires may consume your thoughts—this may rule over your family affairs and emotional matters. This mindset presents an opportunity to exercise restraint. A Woman’s Work
Peculiar Roommates Strange Bedfellows Offer Unexpected Happiness
By Sharon Knierim
Isn’t it true that, just when you think those surrounding you finally understand your wishes and preferences, they somehow pull the rug out from under your feet? Maybe that’s what makes life interesting…or, at the very least, compels us to think of new ways to make our desires known. You might remember that line from “The Godfather,” when one character says to another, “It will be those closest to you who will betray you.” Well, in a much watered-down version of the cautionary tale, poor old Grandma has been betrayed or maybe just outvoted. Here’s the thing: Both my husband and I were raised on diverse Iowa farms where it was the rule that people lived inside of houses and animals lived outside of houses. Animals were domiciled in barns, chicken coops, hog houses, or under the back porch. This was more or less the law of the land. There were no exceptions. After all, why would we bring the animals inside? Were we willing to change places with them and move ourselves into barns, chicken coops, hog houses, or under the back porch? We were not. I will admit that, after our children began growing, we did adopt a dog while we were living in an urban area. We always wondered

about the wisdom of that decision, but when my husband brought that little brown-eyed abandoned dog home with him one dark night during a blizzard, it was impossible to turn the dog away. Instead, we kept that dog, fell in love with him, and made him a member of our family. That little dog is long gone now, but we still remember him and talk about him often. Eventually, he moved to the family farm and lived his life out in complete happiness as he became master of all he could see. Many years later, we became masters of a criminal cat who stole from us constantly. We began to resent that felonious feline, and he, too, moved to the family farm, though for

completely different reasons. In other words, he was forever banished from our house. Through the years, we have attempted to maintain a house cat because our farmhouse is surrounded by cornfields that are well-loved by mice. We have never had a mouse in this house, and I credit the long line of cats who successfully defended our home. Today, we have just one house cat. He lives mainly inside because he is very arthritic and is usually in a foul mood, which makes him unpopular with the neighborhood felines. Enter a new character. We have a young male relative living in the apartment on one level of our house. We love him dearly, and he is a fine young man. When he announced to us a few months ago that he wanted to adopt a dog, he stopped us in our tracks. “Oh, no,” we reminded him. “We are too old to have a dog.” He promised to take care of the dog himself, but he attends college full time, works nearly full time, has a girlfriend, travels, and even sleeps now and then. Let me tell you that both hubby and I racked our brains and recruited our friends’ help with arguments against having a house dog. One friend went so far as to suggest that it would be good for me “to have someone to talk to.” Well! Have you ever tried to carry on a conversation with a dog? Let me inform you that it’s pretty one-sided. I talk, and she barks. (The dog barks, not my friend.) We thought we had won the debate over whether a dog should live with us when finally, one day, you’ll never believe who moved in. That’s right. It was a dog. We were pretty skeptical until she smiled at us and those brown eyes gazed into ours. Smiles and brown eyes aside, we weren’t truly convinced. We wondered if the dog should return forthwith to the animal adoption agency before further disrupting our peaceful life. Of course, we would never say that in front of the dog. We often found ourselves huddled in the dining room or on the back porch, wondering what our next move should be. You have probably already figured out the rest of the story. The dog (her name is Bea) has moved permanently into our home and into our hearts. Bea has become a member of the family. We walk her and feed her and care for her and love every minute. As it turns out, she is pretty fun to talk to. In fact, she always agrees with me. We love that little dog! WE

Vantage Point
Primrose School of La Vista Empowering and Educating the Whole Child
By Jackie Byers
At the Primrose School of La Vista, full potential encompasses “social, emotional, physical, creative, cognitive, and character development.” Under the dynamic leadership of Theresa Thibodeau, this school and its students flourish, working to reach their full potential every day. “After earning my degree in psychology, I worked in human resources,” Theresa shares. “I have three children: girl, boy, girl. I made the decision to stay home with my children when my son was one, before my second daughter was born. At that time I developed a passion for early childhood education.” Careful research led Theresa and her husband, Joe, to choose the Primrose School plan. “The plan is balanced and has proven successful since its founding in 1982,” she notes. “Students learn language and literacy skills, science, math, engineering, social studies, creative arts, physical development, and social and emotional skills.” “Research shows that 90 percent of Primrose students perform at about twice the level of others in their peer groups,” Theresa asserts. However, she points out, “who a child becomes is just as important as what he knows. Our educational plan really develops the whole child.” Under Theresa’s leadership, this early childhood education center is succeeding as it grows. She brings the energy that keeps the place running smoothly on an enriching schedule for students aged six weeks to five years. Theresa is the principal, owner, and CEO of Primrose School of La Vista, but those aren’t her only titles. In the Nebraska Unicameral, she is Senator Thibodeau. At home, she answers to “Mom.” When Theresa arrives at Primrose, she enjoys greeting the parents and students as they arrive and saying goodbye in the evenings. Constantly monitored cameras scan the parking lot, and the building’s only entrance is also secured. As children change locations inside or go in and out to recess, teachers use iPads to keep track of each child by name and facial photograph. This security feature is another part of making Primrose a safe, happy, and healthy place. “Quiet time is an important part of each student’s day at Primrose,” Theresa says. “This may be a nap, just resting, enjoying a book, or quietly coloring. It allows the brain to process what is being learned. To be busy all the time is exhausting, is counter-productive to learning, and produces stress.” While students rest, teachers use the quiet opportunity to send daily email updates to each child’s parents. Theresa points to the school’s ample outdoor space. “Another part of the Primrose plan is recess on ageappropriate playgrounds. Supervised exercise develops healthy bodies and important socialization activities. It is a joyful time for the children.”

The well-researched curriculum is part of what makes Primrose special. “Our curriculum is supported by extensive educational research,” Theresa says. “Each age grouping has clear and important goals. From six weeks old to age five, students learn how to grow into happy, healthy adults. The curriculum encompasses the best early childhood education research. However, one aspect of the 21st century is specifically omitted: no electronic games.” “We also have a partnership with Papillion La Vista Community Schools,” Theresa continues. “They know how well our students succeed throughout school. We have expanded our pre-kindergarten program to help more children be ready for kindergarten in the Papillion/ LaVista school program.” So much learning happens here, including selfsoothing for the infants, signing for toddlers, and Spanish for preschoolers. Every activity is a learning opportunity. “Children are naturally curious,” Theresa says. “Our ageappropriate goals and processes for each group reward this curiosity. Students learn that making mistakes is not a bad thing. Trial and error becomes a painless, effective teacher.” A flexible staff of 47 adjusts to different-sized groups while maintaining low student/teacher ratios. Each division has a lead teacher and an assistant teacher. The rest of the staff members shift in their areas of expertise as needed. The learning day lasts from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Then, music, rhythmic movement, and visual and creative arts engage the students in an important part of balanced learning and educating the whole child. “We will offer 12 weeks of summer camp for children ages five to 12. Each week has a different theme—one week is photo journalism; another is flight and includes a visit to the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum. This year, they have incorporated a new robotics program to the summer schedule.” “Primrose School of La Vista continues to grow and thrive,” Theresa concludes. It’s a dynamic institution that is well-suited to dynamic preschoolers. You can arrange a tour of the facility by calling 402-517-1153. See for yourself the secure, happy environment where preschoolers love to learn. Fresh Concept
Rejuvenation Nation Surgical and Nonsurgical Options for Vaginal Problems By Kylie Gumpert
The recent popularity of vaginal rejuvenation procedures has made the vagina quite a hot topic of discussion nowadays. These surgical and nonsurgical procedures are meant to do everything from stemming the tide of urinary incontinence to enhancing sexual pleasure to altering genital structure. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI), the most prevalent form of incontinence among women, affects an estimated 15 million adult women in the United States. Stress incontinence happens when a certain activity, such as coughing, sneezing, running, or heavy lifting and puts pressure on your bladder, resulting in involuntary loss of urine. Treatment options can relieve this condition and improve quality of life. Although we might not talk about it much, many women in the middle and later stages of life experience a decrease in sensation and satisfaction during intimacy. Some of us would call the experience downright painful! There are many reasons for this, including the hormonal changes that accompany aging, the physical changes caused by childbirth, or a significant weight loss. If you have noticed these changes in yourself and are no longer satisfied with your intimate experience, don’t despair. Many treatments can help you regain your spark. Childbirth, aging, and significant weight loss may cause the muscles of the vaginal area to become stretched out, resulting in less sensitivity during intimacy. As we age, our tissues naturally become less elastic, so it’s harder for them to bounce back. Procedures such as vaginal reconstruction or vaginal rejuvenation can tighten the vaginal muscles. Vaginal procedures can also alter the physical appearance of the genitals, should you so desire. Doing your research is essential! For surgical treatments, find a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has vast experience in vaginal reconstruction. You might also want a board-certified gynecologist who has additional training in urogynecology. Vaginoplasty addresses the problem of vaginal laxity. The procedure involves a surgeon using a laser as a scalpel to remove excess vaginal tissue and tighten the muscles. The procedure may take up to two hours. Recovery may be as long as several weeks of healing before intimacy can be re-introduced. By week six, the stitches are typically dissolved. Following a postoperative visit with your surgeon, you will be cleared for normal sexual activity. Many women seek vaginal reconstruction to address issues inside the vagina. Some women are also concerned with the external portion of their genitals. Surgical procedures can address this, as well. For example, if you feel that your labia are too large and are getting in the way of enjoying intimacy, you might consider a labiaplasty. This procedure removes extra tissue to change the size or shape of the labia. Typically, this short
20
June 2018
outpatient procedure can be performed under general anesthesia, with a relatively short recovery time. A clitoral hood reduction might be done along with a labiaplasty to avoid a “top heavy” look after the labia minora are reduced. The American Society of Plastic Surgeon notes that these two procedures have a satisfaction rate over 90 percent. A labia majoraplasty involves trimming excess skin from the outer, hair-bearing labia majora. Monsplasty reduces fat in the area directly above the vagina called the mons pubis. For this procedure, a surgeon will use liposuction and will sometimes remove excess skin and tissue to make the area flatter. If you want vaginal rejuvenation but are shying away from surgery, you might consider vaginal rejuvenation through nonsurgical procedures. Such options include radiofrequency and laser treatments that heat the tissue to slightly damage it, which stimulates healing as well as collagen production. Over time and after multiple treatments, these methods are said to cause tightening of the vagina and surrounding areas. The Juliet laser treatment uses a laser to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the body. The Juliet treatment reverses the signs of aging and childbirth and may also treat stress urinary incontinence and vaginal dryness. Although some women commonly need two or three treatments, the Juliet procedure only takes 15 minutes—with no recovery or downtime. FemTouch Vaginal Laser Rejuvination addresses vaginal conditions including atrophy and dryness, stress urinary incontinence, and vaginal laxity, by promoting the remodeling of the vaginal mucous layer using stateof-the-art CO2 laser technology. The fractional CO2 laser beams are applied along the vaginal wall, resulting in new vaginal tissue growth. This procedure requires just 2–4 short outpatient treatments. MonaLisa Touch, another laser treatment, is marketed specifically toward menopausal women or women
www.womensedition.com
suffering from vaginal atrophy. It stimulates a healing response and collagen production. Patients usually receive three 5-minute treatments at six-week intervals. Your doctor will determine if follow-up treatments are required. ThermiVa is another noninvasive treatment for vaginal rejuvenation. The technique uses a handheld probe to deliver controlled thermal energy. The heat contracts the tissues and encourages collagen production, which assists with tissue and nerve healing. The results are a rejuvenated vaginal area, less vaginal dryness, fewer urinary issues, and enhanced intimacy. The ThermiVa procedure is conducted in three separate treatments over the course of a few months. Most patients find the treatment comfortable—some patients have even reported falling asleep during the procedure. Because the procedure requires no incisions, there is no recovery time. Patients can resume normal activities, including intimacy, immediately after each treatment. Optimal results typically develop a few months following the treatment, and most patients require a maintenance session only twice per year. If you are a woman battling decreased sexual desire, you may have noticed that there are not a lot of products on the market targeted toward women’s intimate needs. The O-shot (yes, that’s “O” for “orgasm”) is designed specifically for women. The O-shot is a nonsurgical procedure that stimulates a woman’s intimate desire. This procedure extracts platelets from the patient’s own blood. The platelets are then placed in a syringe and injected just inside the vaginal area, near the clitoris. (An anesthetic cream is applied to the area prior to the injection.) The platelets act as a stimulant to grow new cells, making the vaginal area more sensitive to touch. The overall
effects of the O-shot typically last a minimum of 18 months. The G-Shot consists of an injectable cosmetic filler, much like the ones used by cosmetic surgeons or aestheticians to increase fullness in the face or lips. With the G-Shot, the filler is injected into a woman’s G-spot, increasing its size and, ostensibly, her chances of greater sexual satisfaction. If you’re considering vaginal rejuvenation or are simply curious, start by talking to your doctor, gynecologist, obstetrician, or urologist about what you are experiencing and how vaginal rejuvenation might help. As with many other types of surgery, many patients begin with less invasive treatment options before moving on to surgical procedures. Talk to a physical therapist about noninvasive treatments like biofeedback or specialized exercises that it might make sense to try first. If your symptoms are not resolved to your satisfaction, it might be time to look into more invasive vaginal rejuvenation procedures. Check with your insurance company to see what may be covered for these procedures. If you are experiencing symptoms such as a reduced desire for intimacy, pain during intimacy, or urinary incontinence with otherwise good health, you are most likely a good candidate for vaginal rejuvenation. Sensuality and intimacy are very important parts of life. Don’t let insecurity or awkwardness keep you from happiness and satisfaction. Whatever you choose, don’t suffer in silence! Talk to your doctor about your vaginal symptoms today. Realtor Julie Diers Building Community By Jackie Byers
Whether she was earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management at Peru State College, running fundraisers at her sons’ schools, or meeting her clients’ needs as a realtor, Julie Diers has always believed in whole-heartedly pouring her effort into the worthy project at hand. This kind of energy has served her well in many areas of her life. Today, it serves the clients she works with as a realtor with NP Dodge. Julie has a heart for her community. She has been a wish grantor for the Make-A-Wish® Foundation chapter in Omaha for 19 years. She has helped children with life-threatening conditions come up with a wish, helped plan it, and assisted in sendoff parties for these special kids and their families. “Make-A-Wish is an outstanding organization that changes many lives and gives so much hope to families in hard times,” Julie remarks. “MakeA-Wish’s mission and my mission in real estate are very similar in that we are striving to make a difference in people’s lives—to bring joy and hope in times of stress and difficulty.” Giving back is a way of life for Julie. She continues to be a volunteer for Creighton Prep Moms and Fremont High School sporting events. She is also part of the Junior League of Omaha, volunteering at their many fundraisers, including the A Book of My Own Committee and the bRUNch 5K. Julie’s love for real estate started when she began the homebuilding process eight years ago. She found it fascinating, overwhelming, and, in the end, rewarding. She has made it her mission to educate clients and provide the utmost care for them during this process. “I love listening to my clients’ needs and, based on those, providing a list of reputable builders, resources for house plans, plot plans (if necessary), and neighborhoods that fit their specifications, all while keeping their budget and goals in mind,” says Julie. Sellers will find that Julie provides amazing service throughout the process. It starts with the consultation, where Julie makes recommendations such as sprucing up landscaping, repainting a bedroom, or moving furniture—this helps the sellers prepare their home to list. Having your home looking its best makes such a difference in buyer traffic and, ultimately, a quick sale with the highest proceeds. Julie provides a complimentary market analysis to all prospective sellers. This shows the seller the most up-to-date sales information relevant to their neighborhood and takes into account updates, remodels, square footage, floor plans, and the like. “Educating my clients is so important to me,” Julie shares. “I will guide them and provide options and

resources along the way, from negotiations to inspections to working with lenders and title companies.” Real estate transitions can be complicated, but Julie’s care and expertise will reassure you that she’s got your needs as her top priority. During the buying process, Julie will be your advocate and a great resource, educating you on the necessary steps and making the process fun, exciting, and rewarding. In addition to her strong negotiation skills, she has a network of lenders, inspectors, and service providers, giving her buyers the confidence that she has their best interests at heart. Julie believes that the biggest rewards from her business are the relationships and friendships she has formed, and she’s proud that a large part of her business is based on referrals. “When the transaction is over, that is not the end. I check in with my buyers and sellers routinely and pop by to see how everything is going,” Julie notes. “My clients know that they can call me anytime for a service referral, for advice on a home repair, or just to update me on their new home and their lives.” Julie loves to be there for her clients, and her greatest satisfaction is having happy clients who love to refer her to their family and friends. Awards Julie has received include Top Closed award and Top Production award in 2015–2016 as part of a two-person team. In 2017, Julie joined a fourperson team selling over $15 million in real estate. Julie specializes in residential, new construction, investment properties, and relocations. She provides real estate services for both buyers and sellers in the Omaha and Fremont areas. Her website, julidiers.npdodge.com, features many of the delighted customers she has helped in her years at NP Dodge. Typical client thanks include: “You’re the best, “You make it about the customer,” and “Best realtor ever.” The high praise Julie has received from so many clients is proof of her success. “I work hard to make my clients’ lives easier,” Julie concludes, “and I am passionate about what I do.” Her delight in what she does is inspirational. Not Your Grandma’s Orthotics and Prosthetics Get a Custom Fit at OrthoMedics
By Marge Shoemaker
If you find yourself in need of an orthotic or prosthetic device, the last thing you want to do is suffer the discomfort of ill-fitting, one-size-supposedly-fits-all equipment. Devices purchased over the counter often come in standard sizes like small, medium, and large. What should you do if your size is in between or if you need a device outside the standard range? The answer is simple: Call OrthoMedics. OrthoMedics is a locally owned and operated clinic that specializes in providing advanced, customized prosthetic and orthotic care. Their mission is to provide each patient with high-quality, cost-effective care and service in coordination with the patient’s physician. OrthoMedics owner Jacob Keough always knew he wanted a career in medicine. One day, while he was working at a local hospital, Jacob was the only one available to help attach a neck bracing/stabilizing device (called a “halo”) to a patient. Following the procedure, the orthotist he was assisting offered him a job. Jacob soon saw what could be done in the field and was excited at the prospect of joining it.
While Jacob worked toward his certification in orthotics, he found that he enjoyed working with patients and solving problems related to their needs. When he realized that most orthotic devices are not adjustable, he started experimenting and decided to establish a clinic and fabrication shop. He opened OrthoMedics in Omaha 10 years ago. Prosthetic and orthotic devices, Jacob explains, are not generally made to last a lifetime. “Devices fitted to teenagers and children won’t fit long because kids are constantly developing,” he says. “It’s the same with

Good Looks
An Ounce of Prevention Women’s Health Care
By Loretta McCollum
As women, we tend to put others’ needs above our own. We’re accustomed to assuming the roles of supporter, nurturer, and comforter. Though our dedication to others is laudable, we need to remember that it’s important to take care of ourselves. An annual physical exam is a simple step toward achieving that goal. A yearly well-woman visit can detect potential health problems and provide baseline information that, when compared against future tests, may provide early detection of serious medical issues. Many physicians agree that seeing patients on a regular basis allows them to put their patients’ symptoms in better context. Regular visits also provide a more complete health history, helping physicians give better diagnoses. A thorough exam includes obtaining height, weight, and blood pressure measurements; a recent medical history; and a review of current medications. Your physician will also listen to your heart and lungs and check your ears, nose, and throat. A pelvic exam will be performed to check the uterus and ovaries for fibroids and cysts. Tobacco and alcohol use will be discussed. Depending on your medical history, cholesterol, blood sugar, and hormone levels may be tested. It’s important to note that this exam is not one-size-fits-all. Age and medical history are factors in determining what the exam entails. Pap smears, during which cell samples are harvested from the cervix to detect abnormalities, were once routinely performed yearly,
but the new standard is every three years, beginning at age 21. Women over 30 who have had three consecutive normal tests may only need to be tested every five years. Women older than 65 years who have not had an abnormal test in 10 years may no longer need to be tested. The theory on mammograms has also been reevaluated. The American Cancer Society recommends that annual mammograms begin at age 40 to 45 years, depending on your personal history (check with your doctor). That’s not all that’s changed! Many of us equated the mammogram experience to having a car tire run over a breast and park there for several minutes. No more! Today’s 3D digital mammography uses significantly less pressure and provides a much clearer image. A surprising number of women have heart attacks every year. Women should obtain a baseline cardiac profile, ideally at age 20. A full cardiac profile includes a blood test to determine cholesterol, ›››

triglyceride, and blood sugar levels, as well as a lipid profile. A stress test is performed, as well as an electrocardiogram, which measures the heart’s electrical activity. After determining a baseline, blood sugar and cholesterol levels should be checked every 3–4 years. Thyroid function can greatly affect a woman’s health. The thyroid regulates metabolism, energy, and mood. If this gland is overactive, in a condition known as hyperthyroidism, women may experience symptoms like anxiety, sweating, and weight loss. Conversely, hypothyroidism is when the thyroid doesn’t produce enough hormones, leading to loss of energy, depression, and weight gain. Both conditions can be treated with medication to regulate hormone production. Thyroid levels should be checked beginning at age 35, and every five years after that. Few treatable conditions affect a woman’s quality of life more than hormone levels. Women approaching menopause should have their hormone levels checked regularly. Low levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone can lead to abnormal menstrual cycles, infertility, loss of bone density, fatigue, irritability, weight gain, low libido…need I go on? Hormone replacement therapy can alleviate many of these symptoms, though it is not without some health risks. Your doctor will recommend testing options and explain the risks and benefits of hormone therapy. Low hormone levels, combined with menopause, can lead to osteoporosis (low bone density). Women most at risk are those who are post-menopausal, have taken steroidal medications, or are aged 65 and older. Osteoporosis is most often diagnosed with dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA scan), a painless procedure where the patient lies on a table while a scanner passes over, focusing on the spine and hip. If a positive diagnosis is determined, your doctor will discuss treatment options. A discussion about preventative health care wouldn’t be complete without naming that which no one wants to name: the colonoscopy. This procedure is critical in preventing and diagnosing colorectal cancer. Before the procedure begins, the patient is given anesthesia to induce a twilight state. Physicians can remove cancerous or pre-cancerous polyps during the scope. Everyone should have a colonoscopy at age 50 and should repeat the procedure every five years. If you are overdue for any test or procedure discussed here, contact your physician. Sources for this article included healthywomen.org, heart.org, healthline.com, and health.harvard.edu. WE

Are You Apathetic?
Make a Decision to Re-Engage or Move On!
Time and again, I see people who are not happy, not engaged, not truly present for their day-to-day life. I think, as a society, we have become accustomed to living at a mediocre level. We don’t like to rock the boat; we are afraid of too much change. Often we tell ourselves that, even though we may not love what we have created for ourselves in regard to our relationships, our work environment, or our home environment, what we know is much less scary than making the decision to move toward something we don’t know. I think that the general attitude of apathy has become especially prevalent and almost disastrous in the workplace. People continue to go to jobs in which they find no joy. They do the bare minimum to fly under the radar, making sure not to cause a stir because they don’t want added responsibility. They become clockwatchers and make sure to use every minute of their breaks. “We may have found a cure for most evils; but we have found no remedy for the worst of them all, the apathy of human beings.” —Helen Keller The problem is really twofold. In the work environment, gone are the days when employers actually read your resume. Today, many companies utilize software to look for key words. Even smaller

businesses weed out individuals based on what is or is not on a resume without any applicant interaction at all. Additionally, they don’t always take the time or money to invest in finding the right fit for the positions they are trying to fill or provide adequate training and support for new hires. This leads to a dissonance between the demands of the job and the ability, skills, and interest of employees. On the other side, many people are just happy to get a job— anything until something better comes along. Unfortunately, it seems that this has become a growing trend in our society: people look for a paycheck instead of a career that fuels their interests and capitalizes on their strengths. If you are in a job in which you find yourself becoming less interested and invested, it is time to try something new, or perhaps it’s just time to remember why you wanted the job in the first place. Either way, make a decision to recommit and be the best employee you can be. If you can’t do that, set a time limit for yourself to move on to another position. Don’t remain unhappy or unsatisfied. Life is too short, and there are too many options for you to stay stuck. “Apathy can be overcome by enthusiasm, and enthusiasm can only be aroused by two things: first, an ideal, which takes the imagination by storm, and second, a definite intelligible plan for carrying that ideal into practice.” —Arnold J. Toynbee

Graduation: The Next Step on Life’s Journey Take the Time to Enjoy It
Spring is a time for many exciting things. School is out soon, and the kids are looking for summer entertainment or jobs. We celebrate our mothers in May and our fathers in June. Many weddings are planned by June brides. This spring, the most exciting thing in our family is my grandson’s graduation in May. June will see him take the first steps of the journey that will be his adult life. First, he plans on completing his drivers’ education class. Once licensed, he hopes to find a car so he won’t have to rely on Mom for transportation. Or, rather, he hopes to find a job…so he will be able to afford a car…so he won’t have to rely on Mom. All are major accomplishments. He doesn’t know yet where he wants to go on to college or even how he wants to continue his education. He’s talked about a technical school or junior college to start with. He hasn’t yet indicated whether he wants to stay close to home or go somewhere else. I’ve told Mom he can stay with me and go to a junior college or tech school here. Mom has told him he has to do something…work or school or both…he can’t just stay at home. No matter what he chooses, I will miss him. He is my travel buddy. Every summer for the past 10 years, he has come to stay with me for six weeks. We choose a route for a road trip. As we come across things and places that he is interested in, we stop.
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
We’ve gone to the Museum of Nuclear Science in Albuquerque and the New Mexico Museum of Space Travel in Alamogordo. We’ve visited a salt mine in Kansas and a bottling plant in Dublin, Texas. We’ve been to several national parks, including Yellowstone, Devils Tower, Great Salt Lake, Grand Canyon, and Sand Dunes National Monument. We’ve stopped to see trains, classic cars, balls of twine, and the geographic center of the United States. His interests have changed over the years, but his sense of curiosity has remained. Nothing is more fun than driving along a two-lane highway (we try to avoid interstates, if we can) or going through a small town and having him say, “Grandma, can we stop and see that?” It may be an unusual building, a sign for a local attraction, an interesting display, or just someplace different to get food. To him and all the other kids who are graduating and commencing with the rest of their lives, I say: Enjoy every minute. Explore. Stop to see or do things. The world is waiting. I hope you all take the time to enjoy your journey. The places you’ll go, the things you’ll see…they help determine the person you’ll be. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Plumbing 101 Keep Your Home Running Smoothly By Robyn V. Powell
If you’re like most homeowners, you probably don’t give much thought to your plumbing system— until it’s too late. Plumbing emergencies can be extremely stressful, even leaving you stranded without running water until a plumber arrives. By arming yourself with a few maintenance tips and knowing when it’s time to call in a professional plumber, you can prolong the life of your pipes and prevent a plumbing disaster. To keep your plumbing system running efficiently, it’s important to nip even small problems in the bud. Clogged drains, the most common plumbing problem, are more than just a nuisance. Backed-up water puts strain on pipes, shortening their lives. Harsh, chemical-based cleaners can corrode pipes, are harmful to the environment, and don’t always eliminate the clog. Repeated chemical applications over time can result in a leaky pipe. Before reaching for chemicals, try pouring down half a cup of salt followed by boiling water. If a clog persists, it’s time to call a plumber to snake the line—this will completely remove the hair or grease causing the plug. To prevent clogs, carefully monitor what goes down your household drains. Keep food and grease out of kitchen drains, hair out of bathroom drains, and everything besides sewage and toilet paper out of toilets. One of the main plumbing culprits is hard water. Just like the arteries running through our bodies, the pipes in
our homes are subject to plaque buildup. While consuming minerals such as magnesium and calcium naturally found in water is not harmful to our health, these minerals can condense within pipes and damage plumbing fixtures. A telltale sign of mineral buildup is white or greenish residue at the base of your faucet handles. Modern homes with copper or PVC piping are at lower risk for buildup problems than older homes with steel pipes; however, hard water buildup can still damage and shorten the lives of your fixtures and appliances. The most effective method of preventing hard water damage is to have a plumber install a water softener to your home water supply. This removes minerals at the source, so they won’t be distributed through your plumbing system. If you live in an older home or are considering purchasing one, it’s wise to have a professional plumber evaluate the type and ›››

condition of the existing plumbing. Nearly all homes built before 1980 contain lead in the plumbing system. Lead can leach into drinking water through corroded plumbing material, and no amount of lead consumption is considered safe, especially for children. In 2014, the Safe Drinking Water Act prohibited use of plumbing material that is not lead free and mandated the maximum allowable lead content of pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings, and fixtures providing residential water for human consumption to 0.25 percent. Replacing older pipes is a big job that is best left to professional plumbers. If you do update your plumbing, make sure the renovations will bring the house fully up to code. Take the opportunity during any remodeling to inspect newly exposed pipes. When you open up walls and floors and expose pipes, it’s the perfect time to ask a plumber to inspect the existing pipes and let you know if they should be replaced. When remodeling, keep in mind that creating easy access to plumbing can save you money later on—it’s cheaper and easier to replace an exposed pipe than one buried behind drywall. If you plan ahead, plumbing access panels can be incorporated into your design. Prevent shower leaks by installing a fully waterproof shower system. In older showers, replace cracked grout and seal regularly. Keep shower water warm with regular maintenance of your water heater. If your water heater is leaking, not heating properly, older than 10 years, or dinging your energy bill, it could be time for a new heater. Ask potential plumbers if they are licensed, bonded, and insured, and be sure to request a list of references who can attest to the quality of their work. Most large plumbing jobs require a permit to comply with local building codes. It is beneficial to have your plumber secure a building permit before the work is done. This will ensure that any plumbers you hire are licensed and will also hold them liable for any work that doesn’t meet code. It’s advisable to get a second or third opinion before hiring a plumber. You count on your plumbing system to keep clean water flowing into your home and waste flowing out on demand. By taking proactive steps to care for your plumbing, you ensure uninterrupted comfort and safety for your family while protecting your biggest investment—your home. Feeling Low and Slow? Call Restorative Health Omaha By Marge Shoemaker
If you would like to reclaim the energy, vitality, and appearance that you enjoyed in your youth, your first call should be to Restorative Health. At each of the several locations nationwide, the goal of Restorative Health is to restore health and vitality to patients through modern treatments and therapies. Restorative Health Omaha is located in Lakeside Hills Plaza, near 168th Street and West Center Road. According to Chief Medical Director Dr. Melissa Loseke, aging bodies often stop producing sufficient hormones. “When we are young, our bodies naturally produce hormones,” she explains. “Hormone production slows down as we age, resulting in low energy, weight gain, and even depression.” Symptoms for women dealing with hormonal loss (during menopause, for example) include such things as hot flashes, night sweats, loss of libido, and depression. Men suffer similarly, with symptoms including weight gain, hair loss, and erectile dysfunction. “At Restorative Health,” Dr. Loseke continues, “we use biologically identical synthetic hormone replacement therapy to help patients overcome these symptoms.” Patients are asked to commit to a series of treatments that over a year’s time identify and maintain the proper hormonal balance to make them feel good. When hormonal levels are where they should be, women and men are better able to cope with the realities of aging and other challenges. Restorative Health patient Nancy was feeling useless, was depressed, and was gaining weight, even though she was always on a diet. “One night, I was watching television and feeling sorry for myself,” she says, “when a commercial for Restorative Health came on.” The person in the commercial was smiling as she told her story. Nancy wrote down the phone number and called the next day for an appointment. She relates that she lost nearly half her body weight in the first year. She is now in her fourth year of getting a hormonal treatment every 13 weeks. “I have my life back! I’m ME again!” she raves. Jennifer’s story is different, but the results are similar. Following a hysterectomy, she began gaining weight and experienced growing depression. A friend suggested another kind of hormone therapy, her doctor prescribed antidepressants…none of it seemed to work. Then, she went to Restorative Health. “The entire staff was caring and understanding,” she relates. “They tested my blood to determine my hormone levels. Within six months, I felt like a new person! I have energy, the hot flashes and restless leg syndrome have disappeared—I feel like I’m in my 40s again.” Grateful patient Don shares that his relationship with his wife of more than 40 years had deteriorated into one of good friends but not lovers. They both felt the need for

a long nap in the middle of every afternoon. “We hardly had the energy to spend time together,” he comments. After trying Restorative Health therapy, Don reports, “We act like newlyweds again. We like being together and doing things together. That’s a good feeling!” As Dr. Loseke explains, the bioidentical hormones used at Restorative Health are plant-based and are chemically identical to those naturally produced by the human body. Hormonal therapy services provided by Restorative Health are customized to meet the personal needs of each patient. Comprehensive testing and analysis are designed to get to the root of the symptoms, not just mask them with drugs. Restorative Health also provides many other services to help patients regain the vitality and youthful appearance they once enjoyed. Several of their popular therapies take advantage of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is created by isolating platelets from the patient’s own blood and re-injecting them into the body. At Restorative Health Omaha, PRP is used to achieve youthful benefits in many areas of the body. With the “vampire” face lift, the PRP is injected into the facial tissue to give the face a more youthful appearance. When injected near the clitoris in a procedure known as the “O-Shot,” PRP can improve sexual function and reduce the symptoms of urinary incontinence. When applied to the scalp, PRP can strengthen existing hair, reduce hair loss, and even stimulate the cells to grow more hair. More information on these and other procedures and treatments offered by Restorative Health Omaha can be found online at restorative-health.com. Dr. Loseke asserts that Restorative Health’s greatest accomplishments come from the success of their patients—successes like those shared here by patients Nancy, Jennifer, and Don. If you’re experiencing negative symptoms of aging and want to return to a more vibrant version of yourself, call Restorative Health Omaha. The correct hormone balance and revitalizing treatments can lead to a better quality of life. Restorative Health Omaha is located at 17021 Lakeside Hills Plaza, Suite 200, in Omaha. You can reach them by phone at 402-592-9000 or online at restorative-health.com. WE

Pellet grills give you both the convenience of a gas-powered grill and the rich flavor of meat smoked over a wood-fire grill. To put it simply, pellet grills use electricity to burn manufactured wood pellets. Because they are so easy to use, pellet grills are quickly becoming one of the grilling industry’s hottest trends. One model that’s making a comeback is the ceramic grill, also known as a Japanese kamado. As a classic example of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” these charcoal-fueled grills are modern versions of a 3,000-year-old design. Though they are referred to in English as “grills,” ceramic units function best as smokers, roasters, or outdoor ovens. They have the added benefit of being easy to start in all wind and weather conditions (because of their insulated nature). With naturally low airflow, ceramic smokers can retain over 80 percent of your meat’s moisture. Another grill that’s great for cooking up juicy meats is the infrared grill. Traditional gas and charcoal grills function by cooking meat through natural convection, which can cause your
meat to dry out. Infrared grills, on the other hand, use gas or electricity to evenly heat a solid surface. This heat then radiates into your food. With less airflow, infrared units function more like an electric stovetop and keep your food from drying out. Also like a stovetop, infrared grills have adjustable heat. If grilling at home isn’t really your thing, but you love grilling at a tailgate or campsite, you can choose from many portable units. From tiny units that will fit in a backpack to a collapsible full-size grill on wheels, the camping stove and grill market has never had better selection. While you won’t find anything as elaborate as the wood pellet or ceramic models in a portable unit, these little gas, charcoal, or electric models get the job done anytime, anywhere. Speaking of gas, charcoal, and electric—which one is the superior grill fuel? Naturally, each type has its pros and cons, ›››

so the answer is a matter of personal preference. Of course, certain models only work with certain fuel types (for example, wood pellets are only electric; ceramic grills only use charcoal), so be sure to make your decision before you purchase your grill. Gas grills are best for cooks who want to be able to flip a switch and start grilling right away. They require very little prep or clean-up. What you gain in convenience, however, you generally lose in savory smoke flavor. Gas grills also tend to be more expensive. Charcoal grills are for the true pit master. If your primary reason for grilling is enjoying the flavor that comes from smoking meat, then charcoal is for you. Of course, you have to wait for it—a charcoal grill requires the patience to get the coals lit, the time to get it preheated, and considerable clean-up afterwards. Charcoal grills are cheap up front but expensive to maintain because of the ongoing cost of charcoal briquettes. Last (and probably least, if you’re a grilling purist) is the electric grill. Like gas grills, they’re easy to get started and cleaned up. Unlike gas grills, you won’t get even a hint of smoky flavor from electric-grilled meat. Most purely electric grills are purchased by people who live in places that prohibit gas or open-flame grills for fire safety reasons. No grill assembly is complete without accessories, and there are so many to choose from! Besides a high-quality brush and scraper (which you should definitely get), there are also lighters, thermometers, propane-level indicators, and even LED lights for your late-night grilling sessions. If you really want to go fancy, there are also whole outdoor kitchen assemblies that can be installed in your yard. Some folks will go with the relatively simple fire pit, grill, and brick oven combo. Some will go so far as installing an entire kitchen outside, complete with stainless steel countertops, an outdoor range, drawers, cabinets, and even a television. With so many choices on the market, you’ve got no excuse to end up with a grill that doesn’t cook your meat to your liking. Shop around and join the modern world in barbecue heaven! Vision for Life Treatments for Common Eye Problems
By Connie Keck
For most of us, sight is the most vital of all the senses. Our sight allows us to understand and navigate the world. If you want your eyes to serve you well, it’s important to serve them, too, with annual eye exams and prompt treatment of any symptoms. Many people experience eye problems from time to time. Some of these problems are minor and don’t last too long. However, there are some serious eye problems that can cause major damage to the eyes, including permanent loss of vision. Even if you take great care of your eyes, they’re just like any other body part—problems tend to increase with age. Some of the most common eye and vision conditions include astigmatism, myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), cataracts, detached retinas, and corneal injuries. While some of these conditions are more likely to occur in older people, many of them can occur at any age. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea has an irregular, oval shape. This makes objects appear stretched or distorted. The condition can occur simultaneously with myopia or hyperopia. Myopia occurs when the cornea (the front surface of the eye) is too rounded or steep or the eyeball is too long. It makes it difficult to focus on an object or detail far away or across the room. Hyperopia is the opposite—it occurs when
the cornea is too flat or the eye is too short. For people who are farsighted, objects at a distance are clear, but objects up close are blurry. Astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia are often corrected with corrective lenses (glasses or contacts). For a more permanent solution to these vision problems, some people choose LASIK surgery. With this procedure, an ophthalmologist uses a laser to reshape the cornea. This procedure is quick and essentially painless (no stitches required), and it provides rapid and permanent results—most patients have no further need for corrective lenses. A common myth regarding LASIK surgery is that the effect wears off. This is not true. The changes that the laser makes are permanent and will last indefinitely in the vast majority of cases. LASEK surgery is a similar method of laser eye surgery that is available for those who are unable to have LASIK treatment because their corneas are too flat or too thin. Smile surgery is a minimally invasive, bladeless form of keyhole laser eye surgery.

Smile surgery is suitable for individuals with or without astigmatism. A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of one or both eyes that prevents light from reaching the retina. Cataracts grow slowly. Over time, they will reduce a person’s ability to read, drive, and perform day-to-day tasks. Most cataracts form naturally as we age because of changes in the protein and fibers in the lens of the eye. Cataract surgery is one of the most common and most successful surgical procedures in the United States. Over 95 percent of cataract surgeries result in improved vision. As with any surgery, some complications can be severe, but most can be successfully treated. Your chance of developing sight-threatening complications is greater if you have another eye disease or a serious medical condition. A detached retina occurs when the retina gets pulled away from its original position at the center of the eye. If you have a detached retina, you’ll need surgery to repair it, preferably within days of the diagnosis. The type of procedure your surgeon recommends will depend on several factors, including how severe the detachment is. Depending on the severity of your condition, your vision may take several months to improve. Some people recover all of their lost vision; some people do not. The cornea acts as a barrier against dirt, germs, and other particles that can harm the eye. The cornea also plays a key role in vision by helping focus the light that comes into your eyes. The cornea is responsible for 65–75 percent of the eye’s total focusing power. If the cornea suffers a minor injury or scratch, it usually heals on its own. However, if you have a deep injury or a corneal disease, you could experience pain in the eye, sensitivity to light, reduced or blurred vision, inflammation in the eye, headaches, or nausea. Treatments vary for a corneal injury and might include antibiotic ointments or steroids. It is important to maintain the health of your eyes. Annual exams, along with the advice and counsel of your ophthalmologist, are recommended. With some eye problems, prompt treatment is vital for saving your vision. If you feel that your eyes are not working properly, don’t delay—call your ophthalmologist right away. An Inside Look
Albracht Perma Siding & Window Company Increasing Omaha’s Curb Appeal for 60 Years
By Marge Shoemaker
We’ve just come through a roller-coaster winter and spring, complete with wind, rain, snow, sleet, hail, ice, and extremely unseasonable temperatures. On their own, any of these conditions can damage your home—taken together, it’s likely that they did. Finding an assortment of contractors to fix roofs, siding, gutters, windows, and other external parts of your home takes time. If you’d rather work with just one trusted company to take care of the whole job, call Albracht Perma Siding & Window Company. Al and Anne Albracht bought the company (established in 1938) in 1958. Operation continues within the family, as brothers Tom and Steve Albracht have run the company together since the early 1990s. “We learned the company from the ground up,” Steve says, recalling that they and their four siblings helped out however they could during summers and while on school breaks. Over the years, the brothers have installed all the products their company offers. “A good part of our time is spent in the office,” Steve says, “but we both go out in the field to check on the crews, help out when needed, and get a feel for how newer products are working out.” Though the quality and integrity of the business remain the same, the technology they utilize has changed a lot over time. Steve and Tom easily maintain communication with their crews through cell phones, tablets, and computers. They access satellite images of rooftop slopes and angles rather than “risking life and limb” climbing up on the roof for inspection and measurement. Crews can access work orders or project updates in real time, without having to return to the office. Window measurements can often be taken from the outside of the house—sometimes, even by satellite. “Modern technology allows much more efficient usage of our time,” Steve notes. Albracht Perma Siding offers a variety of services connected to home improvement. If you want to make the outside of your house nearly maintenance-free by installing permanent siding and gutter guards, they’ll get the job done. They also sell and install new roofs, decks, windows, and doors. Customer Jake J. says, “I wish I’d known about Steve and his company when I had my other work done. They did a bang-up job replacing hail-damaged gutters, the front door, and new window in the back.” Jake appreciated the ease of working with one contractor offering several products rather than with several contractors who each offered one product. The Albrachts are particular about the products they use. “I research everything new our suppliers send us,” Steve reports. For virtually maintenance-free finish siding, they prefer Mastic Home Exteriors. For composite decking materials that offer the appearance of wood,
48
June 2018
Steve might suggest TAMKO. Doors and windows from ProVia and Great Lakes are high-quality favorites. Leaf Sentry gutter covers provide worry-free, cost-effective gutter protection. The company has dealt with most of their suppliers for some time, and trust has built up both ways. “Trust goes a long way in this business,” he says. “We trust the suppliers to send quality materials. The suppliers trust us to use capable installers. We trust our crews to produce the quality of work the company expects so we can stand behind our warranty.” This means that their customers can trust the company, their crews, and the products. Customer Scott S. had used Albracht Perma Siding when his previous house needed a new roof and siding. “After we moved to a newer home and had hail damage, I knew immediately who to call,” he says. Jeff S., another satisfied customer, called Albracht Perma Siding when his windows were damaged by hail. “The crews were prompt and cleaned up afterwards,” he recalls. “That’s not always the standard.” Customers can call anytime to arrange a free estimate. Steve also points out that customers can contact them online with the basic details of their projects. This allows him and Tom to be aware of what is expected prior to meeting with the customer. “It’s more efficient and less confusing for customers to look at the materials most suitable for their projects,” Steve advises. Installation sometimes depends on the weather, though Albracht Perma Siding crews work virtually year-round. Gutter covers are better installed in warmer weather, when the crew is less apt to disturb the roof’s integrity. Warmer weather also makes door and window installation more comfortable for the customer. Decks can be put in anytime, as long as the footings are poured before the ground freezes. The offices of Albracht Perma Siding & Window Company are located at 10723 Mockingbird Drive, in Omaha. Call them at 402-331-4666 or email them at office@permasiding.com to arrange a free, no-obligation, no-pressure estimate. For more information, visit them online at permasiding.com. WE

Reverse Compounding The Silent Killer
By George Morgan
All self-directed retirement plans, such as 401(k)s and IRAs, charge fees to the plan participants. These fees pay for the cost of plan administration, the expenses of the mutual funds, and fees to a broker for selecting the funds that are included in the plan. Over the course of a working lifetime, the amount of these fees and the way they are calculated can amount to a difference of tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. I recently had an opportunity to discuss this matter with an individual and will use the data I prepared to illustrate the impact that fees have on account performance. This person’s account balance was $250,000; every year, $20,000 was added to the account. The fees for the plan were calculated as a percentage of the dollar amount in the account. This plan was charging 235 basis points, which is 2.35 percent of the balance of the account per year. Plan administration cost 50 basis points, 60 basis points went to the broker who selected the funds offered in the plan, and the expense ratio of the mutual fund was 125 basis points. When fees are based on asset size, people with larger account balances pay a disproportionate amount for the account services. A person with a large balance may pay $3,000 to have the paperwork filed and the funds selected, while an employee with a smaller balance may pay only $30 for the same service. I prepared the following chart to demonstrate where the money was going. What you see here is an excellent example of compound interest
in reverse. Every time the assets grew, the fees made a larger withdrawal 1 $270,000 $6,662 from the account. The impact of 2 $276,838 $6,975 negative compounding reduced the 3 $289,863 $7,281 investment return by the amount 4 $302,582 $7,643 of the fees. You can also see that the 5 $317,009 $8,024 plan participant paid almost $90,000 in fees—that’s almost half of the 6 $333,430 $8,928 contributions made to the account. 7 $371,009 $9,877 This person had no idea that 8 $410,457 $10,369 the dollar amount was so large 9 $430,872 $10,884 and, further, did not think there 10 $452,303 $11,099 was any alternative. I advised RETURN: 6.74% $87,742 that two changes to the program would result in significantly lower fees and a dramatic change in

the investment results. The first was to change to a service provider that charged a flat fee (not a percentage of assets) for the plan administration and the selection of the investment menu. Under a flat fee arrangement, all participants pay the same amount for the same service. Most importantly, the service provider is not rewarded simply because participants added money to their accounts. The second change was to move away from the actively managed mutual fund charging 125 basis points to a passively managed fund charging 4 basis points. Multiple studies have shown that high fees don’t translate to high performance because the cost of active management reduces the return to the participant. On average, passive index funds outperform actively managed funds by about 125 basis points, which was the expense ratio of the fund. Based on these changes, I produced the following chart: YEAR BALANCE FEE As you 1 $270,000 $1,200 can see, the 2 $316,236 $1,200 change in pro3 $366,864 $1,200 jected results 4 $422,302 $1,200 is dramatic. A 15 percent 5 $483,007 $1,200 annualized 6 $549,478 $1,200 return may 7 $622,265 $1,200 seem out of 8 $701,966 $1,200 line—from a 9 $789,239 $1,200 strictly invest10 $884,803 $1,200 ment perspecRETURN: 15.28% $12,000 tive, it is—but don’t forget that the participant was adding $20,000 a year. In the asset-based example, the broker fees were growing in dollar amount as the account grew. In the fixed fee example, the fixed fee stayed at the same dollar amount, which means it declined as a percentage of assets over time and allowed the impact of the investment compounding to kick into overdrive. In the first example, the mutual funds had a 125 basis point fee that also cut into the assets as the funds grew. In the second example, the lower expense ratio of the index funds dramatically reduced the impact of negative compounding. Like you, this person really cared about getting the best possible investment return. The kicker? I was talking to the business owner, who had selected an actively managed, asset-based fund in the first place. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. WE

Fitness for Seniors It’s Never Too Late to Collect Your Benefits
By Linda Barnes
We hear it so often, we might just space it off: “Exercise to be healthy.” It is a universal truth, though— everyone can benefit from being physically active. If you’ve been fairly inactive for a while, start out slowly and build up to a level that is right for you. It’s never too late to get moving! The reason everyone advises us to get active is that it affects everything about our well-being. Movement that gets our heart and breathing rates up does far more for our physical and mental health than you might think. Movements that strengthen muscles and improve balance are valuable to everyone but are particularly vital for seniors. Perhaps you’ve always enjoyed being active, but aches, stiffness, and lack of energy have significantly diminished your activities over the years. Maybe you’ve never liked the concept of “exercise” but got by during your younger years with normal, everyday activity. There’s an easy trap to fall into: “I’m older now; I’ve earned the right to slow down.” Maybe you have. However, if you want to be as healthy as possible and continue to enjoy the things you love to do, getting and staying fit is the ticket. You will have more energy, protect your heart, manage weight better, and maintain your independence longer. Regular exercise also is a great boost to your mood, memory, and mind. Studies show that physical activity is the top source of longevity. Active people not only look and feel better, they have sharper minds

and have more get-up-and-go than their sedentary friends. Stronger muscles and better balance mean fewer of the falls that can so adversely affect our well-being as we age. Metabolism naturally slows in later years, which results in weight gain. Most of us can relate to this. The good news is that maintaining a healthy weight is also a huge benefit of being physically active. The more we exercise, the more calories we burn. Our resting metabolism may actually improve with the added muscle mass and increased activity. “All right, all right,” some of you are thinking. “I know I should be more active, but how do I get motivated?” First, talk to your doctor to make sure you’re healthy enough for the exercise you want to try. Then, no matter what your current level of activity is, take it up just one notch. As soon as you start seeing and feeling results, that will be motivating in itself!

Joining a fitness class or buying a trial gym membership might be the boost you need. Your level of fitness will be factored in as you begin, ensuring the best chance for success. Trained instructors will also take into account your age and will likely suggest low impact movements for seniors. Low impact strategies mean less stress on joints. For example, the gliding movement of an elliptical machine puts less stress on legs than a treadmill does. Cycling is easier on joints than jogging. Water aerobics are joint-friendly but still great for the heart and help increase range of motion. Four main areas are addressed by an exercise or fitness routine. Balance means stability when moving about. Stronger muscles contribute to better balance, but activities like yoga and Tai Chi improve posture, quality of walking, and balance. As an added bonus, these activities are meditative in nature, which can bring stress relief. Cardio uses large muscle groups in rhythmic movements such as walking, stair climbing, swimming, cycling, rowing, and dancing. The idea is to get your heart pumping. Done regularly, cardio activities lessen fatigue and improve shortness of breath. Endurance increases over time. Strength and Power build up muscles with repetitive motion using resistance from your own body or from such things as weights or elastic bands. Power training is often similar to strength but at a faster rate. It might increase the speed of your walk or enable a quicker reaction to tripping or a loss of balance. Flexibility routines help joints move freely through a full range of motion. This can be through stationary stretches or movement that involves stretching to keep you supple. It also lessens the risk of injury. Yoga is a good way to stay limber and increase range of motion. Most routines can be modified for age and level of fitness. Start with lighter weights and more repetitions. Instead of a fast speed or steep incline, start slower and lower—but go for a longer time period. Yoga, Tai Chi, cardio, and dance routines for seniors consider our unique needs while aiming for increased fitness over time. A determined 65-year-old I know controls type 2 diabetes with diet and exercise. A friend manages mild depression with water aerobics. How could your health benefit from regular exercise? Assisted Living or Memory Care What’s Right for Your Loved One?
By Leslie Byrne
Many of us would prefer to stay in our own homes as we age, and some of us can—at least, for a while. What happens when we can’t live on our own anymore and no family caregiver is able or willing to care for us? According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 70 percent of adults over the age of 65 will need long-term care at some point. With numbers like those, it’s important to know the difference between assisted living and memory care if you are faced with having to find the right place for your loved one to live. Assisted living and memory care are newer housing options for seniors. Assisted living facilities generally have an apartment-like feel and afford their residents as much independence as possible. Assisted living is a good option for someone who needs help with some daily tasks but does not need nursing care. Many assisted living facilities offer studios, one-bedroom apartments, and two-bedroom units. The monthly rent at an assisted living facility generally includes housecleaning, laundry services, administering medication, serving meals, and offering daily activities and weekly outings. Many facilities have community resources like ice cream parlors, beauty shops, and libraries. Assisted living facilities generally charge a flat monthly fee for rent;
56

if additional care is needed, additional fees are charged. The facilities are staffed with nursing assistants and health aides who can administer medication. They can assist with dressing and bathing, if needed, and offer transportation to appointments. To ensure the safety of the residents, a secure door is likely locked when a front desk person is not on duty. Staff members are in the building around the clock to meet residents’ needs. They serve meals in a dining room that encourages residents to socialize and make new friends. Snacks are readily available, and most rooms include a kitchenette (if not a full kitchen) for residents who prefer to prepare their own meals. Although you may find a memory care unit or wing within an assisted living facility, memory care is a very different level of care. Memory care is for residents with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or
www.womensedition.com
memory problems due to conditions like strokes. Because many people suffering from memory loss are at risk of wandering, the doors are kept locked and residents are not able to leave the area without supervision. A greater level of supervision and a higher number of trained staff members are needed for memory care. The rooms are usually smaller than those in an assisted living facility (or the assisted living wing of the same facility), and the environment is designed to avoid overstimulating the residents. Like assisted living staff, memory care employees administer medication and assist with dressing, bathing, and daily tasks. Some memory care facilities offer programs such as music and art therapy to slow down memory loss or alleviate symptoms like agitation and aggression. Light therapy, in which a person is exposed to bright light, has been found to help residents sleep more soundly and improve mood. Another therapy is facial or photo recognition therapy. Usually, residents are provided a scrapbook of photos of loved ones, friends, familiar places, and past events. If your loved one is suffering from any diagnosed memory problem or disease, consider selecting an assisted living facility that offers a memory care wing. If your loved one needs to eventually move to the memory care wing, staying in the same facility or building can make the move easier (both physically and emotionally). It may decrease the stress of a move, and it facilitates the continuity of care that memory care patients need to limit feelings of disorientation. If you’re looking to move a loved one to assisted living or to memory care, and you feel overwhelmed, start by asking questions. Take the time to visit several different locations at different times of the day. When you visit, be sure to speak with residents as well as staff members. You will find that the directors and staff members are more than happy to provide helpful information, and they understand the concerns that family members have when making this decision. They are usually aware of recent or future laws and regulations, they can suggest financial options, and they can steer you toward another facility if theirs doesn’t meet your needs or they don’t have a vacancy that fits your timeframe. They are well equipped to help your loved one with the transition to assisted living or memory care. Wax On, Wax Off Professional Cleaning Keeps Your Vehicle Looking Great By Brennan Hallock
Summer can be a great season to drive. Cruising with the windows (or the top!) down, hitting a drive-in movie theater, road-tripping with the family—there is so much fun to be had in the car in the summer. However, the heat brings dust, insects, and that relentless sun, all of which can leave vehicles looking pretty dirty. To maintain your vehicle’s value, good looks, and structural integrity, it’s important to wash your car regularly. Washing your vehicle is a necessity year-round, but if you are not in the habit of routinely washing your vehicle, it is a lot easier to start the habit while it is warm outside. Dirt that builds up on your vehicle can wear down and weaken the paint. It can rub the paint off like sandpaper, or it can mix with rain or other pollutants and etch the paint off. If you allow other things, like bird droppings or sap, to stay on your car, they can ruin the paint, as well. Damaged paint affects more than just the look of your car. Paint protects your car from the elements; worn-down paint leaves the body of the vehicle vulnerable to rust and corrosion. Without a solid body, the vital parts of your vehicle will also be exposed to the elements, which can cause irreparable damage. Luckily, the solution is simple: Wash your car. The iconic suburban picture of a car being washed is usually you hosing down your car in your driveway. Washing your vehicle by hand at home can be a great option, but if you don’t have a driveway or a hose, you can always take your vehicle to a self-service car wash. A self-service wash usually involves you paying a fee to use a water jet and foam brush to clean your own vehicle. The car wash may or may not provide towels. Some of these locations also include coin-operated vacuum cleaners, which can be a plus if you would like to clean the interior of your vehicle. If you want your vehicle to have the care of a human being but you don’t have the time to wash it yourself (or you just don’t want to get your hands dirty), a hand-wash service is your best bet. A handwash service involves trained employees who wash and dry your vehicle by hand. This method is the least abrasive to your vehicle, as specialized detergents and cloth pads are used. One drawback to the handwash service is the risk that inexperienced or careless employees will scratch or damage your vehicle. Be sure to read reviews about the wash service before going. If you’re in a hurry, an automated car wash might be the best choice. An automated car wash uses brushes and cloth friction, with soap and water, to clean your vehicle. This is a speedier option and tends to be better for getting rid of a lot of abrasives such as salt or sand. Keep in mind that the brushes in an automated car wash have been known to scratch vehicles or damage exterior items such as antennae. An automated option that is less likely to cause
58
June 2018
damage is a touchless system, where only water, soap, and air are used to clean the vehicle. High pressure hoses spray the car, cleaning it and drying it. This method is still fast and cheap but will be less likely to scratch or damage your vehicle. You should wax your vehicle regularly, as well. As with washing your vehicle, this is not just to keep your car looking nice. Wax creates a protective barrier between your car’s body and the elements, preventing salt, sand, dirt, sap, and other potentially harmful substances from damaging your vehicle. If you don’t wax your vehicle every time you wash it, you should at least wax it about four times per year. Many people stop cleaning once their vehicles look sparkling and new from the outside, but there is one more important step you should take two or three times per year— professional detailing. Auto detailing is just what it sounds like—a detailed cleaning of your vehicle, inside and out. This is more than just vacuuming the floors and seats; it involves cleaning every little corner of the vehicle with rags, Q-tips, upholstery cleaner, canned air, and more. Regular detailing prevents dirt from building up in exterior areas that are hard to reach with a car wash. It also reduces allergens and other dirt from building up in the interior, which can improve the health and comfort of everyone in the vehicle. If you haven’t been washing, waxing, and detailing your vehicle regularly, summer is a great time to start. Your clean vehicle will look great, will last longer, and will retain value. You can’t beat that! Sources for this article included: farmers.com, blog. allstate.com, angieslist.com, dmv.org, cobblestone.com, and torquenews.com. WE

The Good Life
American Wine Country It’s Just Not California Anymore
Holly Tierney-Bedord
If you’ve never visited a winery, you’re missing out! Trying new flavors of wine can be a fun, relaxing, and even educational way to spend the day. From bridal showers and girls’ getaway weekends to a romantic rendezvous, a jaunt to a winery will make any trip a special and more memorable experience. Once thought of by many Americans as too fancy for everyday life, wine has become a staple in many homes. The health benefits of drinking a moderate amount of wine, along with the increase in easily accessible, affordable, high-quality choices, have made it easy, fun, and guilt-free to develop a passion for wine. While a trip to Australia or Chile to experience beautiful vineyards and fabulous wine sounds exciting, there’s no need to get out your passport for the full winery experience. Wine grapes grow in nearly every region of the United States. Experienced wine growers have the expertise to cultivate the right kind of grape for their particular climate, topography, and growing season. No matter where you live, a tour of a winery is likely just a car ride away. Many wineries have tasting rooms and outdoor patios. It’s also increasingly common to see wineries serving as destinations for weddings or events like employee team-building workshops and outdoor summer concerts. With so much natural beauty built in, it makes sense for them to show off their beautiful spaces. If you aren’t a wine expert, don’t let that stop you from jumping in and enjoying a winery tour or tasting event. Learning a little ahead of time can make your experience more enjoyable. The determining factor in every wine is the kind of grape it’s made from. In fact, wines are named after the grapes; for instance, pinot noir, syrah, and malbec are all just the names of the kinds of grapes that produce the wines by the same name. Some grapes produce sweeter wines, while others produce drier or more acidic wines. This is why, when people think of German wines, they often think of sweet white wines like riesling and gewürztraminer. When naming Italian wines, dry red wines like Chianti come to mind. Germany and Italy have very different climates, and winery owners must take this into consideration in order to create the best quality wine. Depending on what part of the country you’re visiting, you may not be able to get a really great dry red wine, for instance, but you may be able to find a delicious, fruity, white wine to enjoy. California still produces the lion’s share of American wines, coming in at nearly 90 percent of all the wine we produce (when you add the Pacific coast states together, it’s more than 90 percent). This doesn’t mean there aren’t many other wine options produced
60
June 2018
in the United States. The U.S. actually comes in fourth in the world (after France, Italy, and Spain) in wine production. Travelers can expect to find great red wines not just from the west coast but also in the Rocky Mountains region, the Smoky Mountains region, the Midwest, and beyond. A winery road trip or train tour is a great way to explore the world. (If you’re driving, plan to have a designated driver or a place to stay if you’re planning to drink more than just a little tasting). If you’ve already taken a winery tour, consider trying one in a different region. Each part of the country has its own particular styles of wine, and each winery has its own unique feel and, often, fascinating history. For the quintessential American winery tour, take the Napa Valley Wine Train to the most famous wine-making region in the United States. For a wine tour off the beaten path, try Nebraska, the Smoky Mountains, Wisconsin, or Colorado. If you’re feeling really adventurous, consider an Italian wine tour. For trips to regions you’re unfamiliar with, ask your travel agent for ideas about how to travel and where to stay. Even in areas that have limited wine-growing potential, you may find a winery that imports grapes and handles the rest of the process locally. This can give you a great winery experience, maybe even with grapes that wouldn’t normally grow in that area. Understanding a little about wine before taking a winery tour will make your experience more memorable and enjoyable. With a little research and a winery tour or two under your belt, you’ll go from novice to sommelier in no time! Great Escapes
Nebraska
“The Good Life” By Jackie Williams
Let’s be honest: Most travelers do not think of Nebraska as a vacation destination. “What is there to see in Nebraska?” many would ask. I’m here to tell you that there is plenty! If you enjoy nature, history, family vacations, or wine, put Nebraska on your list this summer or fall. You’ll be pleasantly surprised as to what the beautiful state will offer you. A road trip is the perfect way to see Nebraska’s national and historical sites, but if you have only a few days, I suggest you fly into Omaha and stay in the city for your base. Within a one- or two-hour drive from there, you can see and experience a variety of activities and sites. For instance, there are over a dozen wineries and breweries within 50 miles of the city. Create your own wine trail or take a tour and leave the driving and navigating to the professionals. I suggest you start your first full day by driving to Arbor Lodge State Historical Park in Nebraska City, where you can tour the mansion and estate of Arbor Day’s founder, J. Sterling Morton. Take advantage of the walking trails and enjoy the lilacs! There are over 200 varieties here. I also recommend you buy tickets for the one-hour Discovery Ride, during which you get pulled by a tractor through the orchards and vineyards for a tour of the scenic 260-acre farm. Don’t

miss the Tree Adventure, an award-winning nature-themed attraction where you can walk trails and enjoy sky-high views from the 50foot tree house. End your visit with a little shopping and wine tasting at the Apple House Market. Don’t forget to take home a few varieties of their signature wines as souvenirs. A visit here is definitely a great way to enjoy the nature and outdoors at your own pace. While you’re in Nebraska City, make your next stop at the Kimmel Orchard and Vineyard to taste some great food and ciders. Roam around their trails and pick your own fruit to take home. Don’t forget to do some wine tasting, as well; they offer fascinating apple, peach, and cherry varieties. The gift shop at Kimmel Orchard has so many goodies to take home that you will really have to control yourself—or buy extra luggage! Both of these stops are great for families, since they have activities and playgrounds to keep kids busy and entertained. ›››

Next, we have some history to explore at the Durham Museum in Omaha’s historic Union Station. Kids will love the American Adventure exhibit (until July 29th), where they will be tested to see if they can survive in the wilderness as a settler. You can also walk through an amazing series of passenger train cars from the 1940s and 1950s. The history of Nebraska is very interesting, and the museum has some great exhibits; it’s definitely worth a visit, especially if you have a train-lover in your family. To take in the city’s historic sites from a different vantage point, try a river cruise along the Missouri River. If you enjoy genealogy, sign up for a guided walking tour with a company like History Walks, LLC, and prepare to be enlightened and entertained by local history buffs. If you have never visited a castle before, here is your chance! The Joslyn Castle is a terrific local example of architecture and craftsmanship. It’s located in the heart of midtown Omaha, so you won’t have to travel far. Of course, who could leave out Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium? Rated second best zoo in the country by USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Travel Awards, this zoo is worthy of a full day’s visit. Be sure to check out the latest African Grasslands exhibit. One of my favorite things about traveling is the food. I have had fun taking foodie tours whenever I visit a new destination and am not quite sure where to start. Nebraska Tour Company and Omaha Culinary Tours both offer a variety of delicious choices for every palate. Don’t forget about the farmers markets—they are plentiful in the Midwest during the summer, and there’s a great one located right in downtown Omaha. One more thing—if you’re in or near Omaha on August 10th and 11th this year, you have got to go to the Nebraska Balloon and Wine Festival. Watch hot air balloon launches in the evening while sipping some local wine and enjoying the music and festival atmosphere. Maybe even take a hot air balloon ride while you’re at it! It is a really cool festival you shouldn’t miss. Nebraska is definitely worth a visit! Pair some city life with beautiful, wideopen spaces, and you have a fantastic vacation waiting for you. Bring your family or travel with the girlfriends. You’re sure to enjoy yourself because Nebraska is truly the good life! Laughter for a Lifetime
Queen of the Garage Sales Seeing, Selling, and Buying Everyone Else’s Memories
By Sharon Knierim
At some point it happens to every woman. I mean, really, who can exist for 50 plus years without collecting lots of stuff? One woman’s garbage is another woman’s treasure. At least that’s what I am convinced of. When you live a long time, you collect a lot of treasures: a few knick knacks…gifts from some long forgotten giver…doodads from the 1970s…travel souvenirs…well intended presents from the in-laws…every nook and cranny was filled with treasure that I no longer wanted nor needed. A friend of mine recently told me that I needed therapy. She’s worried about my obsessive collecting. She can talk. She owns and operates a second-hand shop. But, I know she has a private stash of treasure. My stash was garage sale merchandise. We were moving toward a big event in our lives. That’s right, my family and I were going to have a garage sale. You might not think that this is such a big deal, however, we went at it with all of the planning and aplomb of a wedding or a family reunion. Where should we have our garage sale? What would be a good date? We checked everyone’s social calendars. Should we make signs and put an ad in the local newspaper? Well, I’m really skeptical about strangers visiting our home, so I began to have second thoughts. And then, the memories came flooding back. This would not be my first garage sale. I’m a repeat offender. Having garage sales is difficult for me. Garage sales are emotional events, and I usually become ambivalent about selling my children’s baby clothes and tricycles. But when your babies are nearly seven feet tall and drive fast cars, it’s probably time to let go. That sounds easy, you say. Well, I’m sure it is easy for some women, but for me it’s tough. My first garage sale was a disaster. My two sisters contributed their merchandise but not their presence. I’ve always been a bit of a snob, thinking my stuff was pretty nifty. Sadly, my customers didn’t. They bypassed my goodies and bought all of my sisters’ used things. Two days later, I boxed up my unwanted, underappreciated and unsold offerings and toted them off to a thrift store. They didn’t like my stuff there either. It sat on their shelves for months. I tried to fool the public with my next garage sale. We carried on quite a public relations campaign before the two-day event. Posters went up all over town and our newspaper ad bragged about my children cleaning out the attic. Surely, if buyers wouldn’t want my stuff, they might be willing to buy from a couple of cute kids. (Is this kind of a psychological extortion?) The first day of our garage sale brought 105 degree temperatures. The children sold lemonade and made a fortune. Customers were cranky. They were hot; we were hot. Then trouble started. Our shoppers began making unflattering comments about our merchandise and wanted to haggle over prices. That’s when the “No Haggling” sign went up. Things went from bad to worse. I finally gave away my green brocade drapes (I never liked them
66
June 2018
anyway) and an old rocker, and we closed up shop. Day 2 of that garage sale didn’t happen. We went to the pool and cooled off. Our next garage sale was a private affair. A group of friends simply traded or bartered their merchandise and only a small amount of money passed hands. But sadly, some friendships ended and some feelings were damaged because of lack of payment or unequal trading. Maybe it’s best to share garage sale experiences with strangers. So that brings us to our latest garage sale. We were bailed out from having it at home, because our area college was having a community garage sale. For a nominal fee, we could rent two tables and lots of floor space. Sounded like a good deal. There would be no posters to paint and no ad for us to place in the paper. All we had to do was price our merchandise…or so it seemed. Well, there were a few other chores. A visit to the bank was required; we needed lots of change. We did loads of laundry and ironing, preparing our old wardrobes for sale. Books had to be inspected for old personal notes, toys needed cleaning and repair, and, of course, the big challenge was transporting all of our sale bargains to the site. We finally loaded all of our merchandise into three big trucks and away we went looking like something out of “The Beverly Hillbillies.” The entire family was involved in this garage sale and that really made it lots of fun. If you’ve prepared for a garage sale, you know there are second thoughts. Should I sell it? Should I pack it away? For me, that’s the hardest part of preparation. Did we make a profit? I’m not sure. No accounting has been done yet. The cash outlay was pretty remarkable. We paid to participate; we needed change. Of course, we had to eat catered lunches and treats throughout the day. And then there was all of that great garage sale stuff I bought, including a decorative rug. So, although we may not have made a huge profit, we did have lots of fun, were well fed, and had the opportunity to meet old friends and make some new friends. All in all, I’d much rather be a guest at a garage sale than play the host. Of course, there’s less work involved in being a guest: I understand the etiquette much better, and it’s just darned fun to see everyone else’s memories. Sometimes, I feel as though I’m losing a bit of my soul with the sale of each item; memories are being given to strangers for just a few cents, but on the bright side, maybe those folks can build new memories. The Green Thumb
The Heyday of the Season Remember to Have Fun
By Sharon Knierim
For months, we have waited out Mother Nature’s cold and frosty reminder that she is still in charge of our outdoor plans and outdoor environment. Now that spring and early summer have arrived, we seem to have reached the heyday of our gardening and outdoor activities. There do not seem to be enough hours in the day (or week, or month) to accomplish all that we want to do. So many of our chores need to be carried out at essentially the same time, which leads to a lot of rush-rush jobs. With all these “must do right now” chores, it is not difficult to become overwhelmed and exhausted. Bear in mind, however, that gardening should (if possible) be a relaxing endeavor and a time to enjoy yourself and your garden. There are times that the feelings of satisfaction and enjoyment from gardening can be very difficult to achieve. When an infestation of red ants or Asian beetles encompasses the entire garden, or the deer have taken a tour of the yard and eaten what they please, it can be difficult to remain calm. Personally, I am always mad as a hornet when something like this happens. We, do however, have to respect the fact that we share our gardens with wildlife…and they have needs, too. After all, we are invading their areas. Raccoons, and possums, and insects
of all sorts are generally willing to share their environment with us, especially if we plant the offerings they love best. Staying calm and practicing prevention seems to be the best plan. Making free lunch unavailable for these critters works the best for me. Sometimes, insects, fungi, or four-legged friends are just as intimidating as the tough-as-nails weeds that seem to have secured a head start in all gardens. Work, work, work seems to be the buzz word. When we stop to think about it, though, most of us engage in gardening because we love nature, love being out of doors, and love expressing our own creative whims. Anything worth having and embracing does require a certain amount of effort. Sometimes, we have to just grin and bear it while seeking out the beauty of gardening and under-

standing what we bring to nature and what nature offers us in return. Most maddening for most gardeners is the omnipresent mole and his annoying habits. Who among us has not walked out into the garden only to discover that a mole and his extended family seem to have had a reunion, leaving plants uprooted and tunnels running every which way through the yard? Although it sounds cruel, we usually engage in a live version of “whack-a-mole” in retaliation. Unfortunately, this doesn’t actually kill the moles—it just encourages them to move to the neighbors’ yards! May to July is the high point of the growing season here in the Midwest. Yes, there is work to be done, but—oh! What joy you feel when everything finally comes together to create a beautiful landscape that only you could have made. Even though gardeners often mimic and copy from each others’ plans, each garden is as distinctive and unique as the gardeners themselves. Whether you plant a flashy, over-the-top garden or enjoy showing off in more subtle and subdued styles, don’t forget that your garden is a true reflection of your personality and preferences. This is your time to express yourself freely to your family, your neighbors, and passersby. Although your muscles may ache during the heyday of such a busy and incredibly active time, it’s important that you not forget to have fun. Take the time to enjoy the adventure of planting something like a seed or a very tiny plant, watching it grow and thrive, and seeing it finally mature into some wonderful form of splendor. When you have reached the point of understanding that you yourself created that beauty, don’t forget to tell yourself (and anyone who is listening), “I did that.” It’s a wonderful feeling, so take a victory lap. You’ve earned it. While you may hope to achieve perfection, do not be disappointed if your garden does not resemble that of Louis XV. Not every garden needs to be as well-manicured as Versailles! Remember that nature is not perfect. In fact, isn’t a garden that has challenges more interesting and fun than one that is always perfectly manicured? Gardening is, in part, an exercise in problemsolving. If our gardens had no problems, no maintenance, no pests—would we be motivated to get outdoors, put on our gardening shoes and hats, and begin? Have fun this summer! WE June 2018

Cuddly Critters
Beyond the Backyard Pet Funerals, Memorials, and Cremations By Julie Kuntze
In 1896, a grieving resident of New York City made an unusual request of her veterinarian, Dr. Samuel Johnson. Her dog had recently passed away, and she wished to bury the body respectfully. Living in the city, however, she did not have the space. Dr. Johnson owned an apple orchard about 30 minutes north of Manhattan in a hamlet called Hartsdale, and he offered his client a space among the trees to be the final resting place for her beloved canine. While Dr. Johnson did not foresee it, word spread quickly. Today, Hartsdale Pet Cemetery and Crematory is America’s oldest pet cemetery. The challenges and heart-felt wishes of Dr. Johnson’s client back in 1896 are familiar to pet owners today. Many cities, and even smaller municipalities, have enacted tight restrictions on backyard burials, and many pet owners live in apartments or rental properties. Fortunately, the pet funeral industry has grown, and, as the International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories (iaopc. com) notes, “You have choices.” Losing a beloved pet can be like losing a family member, and it is fraught with emotion and pain. It can be difficult to make a rational decision in the midst of a flurry of feelings, which is why planning ahead is a good idea. With a plan in place, you will be able to be more present with your animal all the way through the very end. When a pet dies, most owners choose to either bury the body or have it cremated. Pet cemeteries usually offer a selection of caskets, markers, and other memorial items, and they may have a crematorium on site or work closely with one. Different crematories offer a variety of options to meet individual wishes, from viewing the process to surrounding the body with beloved toys and blankets. If owners do not specify their wishes for their pet’s body, it is often cremated with many other pets at once or even sent to a landfill. Some pet owners consider taxidermy for their pet’s remains. For the earth-conscious pet owner, there are a couple of companies that will take your pet’s body and return it to you in the form of fertilizer. Some pet cemeteries will provide transportation upon request (if your pet dies at home). When a pet dies in a veterinarian’s office or hospital, the veterinarian may also offer transportation services to the cemetery or crematorium. Owners should remember that, even after death, their pet belongs to them, and they have the right to take the body themselves. A funeral or memorial service offers a bit of closure and time to celebrate a life well lived for a beloved human being—the same can be true for a beloved pet. There are no specific rules about planning a pet funeral, though funeralwise.com

suggests that they are typically shorter and more casual affairs than human funerals. Consider the life of your pet and include the people who were important to that animal. A funeral for your daughter’s hamster might be held at home with only immediate family present; a funeral for your certified therapy dog that worked a few days a week with you at an elementary school might be held at a larger venue and be open to the public. Some elements that are often included in pet funerals include candle lighting, sharing stories or memories, prayers or blessings, readings or songs, memorial photographs and videos, and a closing good-bye. The closing may also include a special activity or call to action, such as a lantern or butterfly release, tree or flower planting, or announcement of a donation to be made to a local pet charity in the pet’s honor. Choose the options that are meaningful to you and your family. Even the act of planning a service can be healing. After the service or burial, it’s hard to go back home without your pet. Many owners choose some type of keepsake that reminds them of their beloved pet’s presence. Urns, boxes, and reliquaries can hold a pet’s ashes or even fur clippings or whiskers. Specially-made necklaces and pendants can contain a small amount of ashes or fur and can be personalized with the pet’s name, picture, nose print, or paw print. Some artisans will even make jewelry out of pet microchips. You can find local pet cemeteries and crematoriums through trade associations online. If you live in a smaller community, check with your local funeral home. Of course, just like with Dr. Johnson, asking your veterinarian is a good idea, too. Positive Perspective
The Ripple Effect Your Choices Impact Those Around You For years, I would jokingly say that “I live in a cave.” I have run this magazine, with the help of my incredibly dedicated staff, for 32 years. The beginning years consisted of 80- to 90-hour work weeks, all-nighters to make deadlines, and family and friends being put on the “back burner.” I would work, eat, and sleep Women’s Edition. “Follow your passion, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice, and, above all, don’t let anyone limit your dreams.” —Donovan Bailey Through all of this, what I did not realize was the effect that it would have on all of the people in my life. I failed to take into account the ripple effect. “The idea that everything is purposeful really changes the way you live. To think that everything that you do has a ripple effect, that every word that you speak, every action that you make affects other people and the planet.” —Victoria Moran Throughout life, we all make decisions to embark on new adventures and challenges. It may be a new business, a marriage, starting a family, getting a divorce, moving to a new home or a new state, or changing careers. What I now realize is that all of these

choices have had a ripple effect on not only those who we know, but those people who they know. The leap that I have made is gaining the understanding that every decision I make will have “consequences.” What I choose and what I chose will permeate through every relationship that I have. It will also have a ripple effect on all of the people who they have relationships with. For many of us, the word “consequences” has a negative connotation. I have learned that, every day, we have the ability to make a positive or a negative impact on those who we come into contact with. So, what are my “consequences?” When I started this magazine, my goal was to produce a positive, uplifting publication. My hope was to leave our readers in a better place than they were before they read Women’s Edition. I am hoping that even though “I lived in a cave,” the ripple effect made everyone that I had contact with a little bit happier. A little bit better. “When we focus on leading a passionate, meaningful life, we are also inadvertently creating a spectacular ripple effect of inspiration in the lives around us. When one person follows a dream, tries something new, or takes a daring leap, everyone nearby feels their passionate energy; and before too long, they are making their own daring leaps while simultaneously inspiring others.” —Unknown
