Wedding Thanks My son, Adam, married his longtime girlfriend, Sam, this past September 22nd. I promised last month that I would give you a report on the wedding, and I’m happy to do so. The weather had been “iffy” for two weeks leading up to the big day. They had chosen an outdoor wedding at the Green Gables Inn in Murdock, Nebraska, about 40 minutes from Omaha. This delightful Airbnb was the ideal venue for Adam and Sam’s wedding. It was absolutely beautiful—very laid-back and relaxing! It was a bit chilly for the rehearsal dinner on Friday night, but by the time guests began to arrive at 3 p.m. on Saturday, it was 72 degrees, sunny, and absolutely perfect! I was talking with Marie, the owner of the Green Gables Inn, and she told me that this was the most perfect day for a wedding they had ever had at the Green Gables Inn. Adam has quite a bit of Irish blood in him—it must have been the luck of the Irish! Kathy and Tom Taylor, the mother and father of the bride, hosted a wonderful experience for family and friends. Since this was an outdoor wedding, they had to have everything brought to the site: tent, tables, chairs, dance floor, bars, silverware, dishes…you name it! It was quite an undertaking, but they pulled it off! They must have worked their tails off. Thank you so much, Kathy and Tom! Sam looked absolutely beautiful in her wedding gown, and Adam was a very handsome groom in the chic suit he chose. The wedding party was small but perfect for Adam and Sam. My granddaughters, Savannah (junior bridesmaid) and McKenna (flower girl), were beautifully decked out. My two-year-old nephew, Fox, was the ring bearer. Their aunt Teresa Albracht had done everyone’s hair, and Amber McClelland, Adam’s cousin, had done the makeup. The bride and groom and wedding party were stunning! Thank you to Teresa and Amber for helping everyone look so beautiful! Adam and Sam have been together for 11 years. It was quite touching to see the two of them tie the knot. Now, the big day is over, and life goes on. I know that life flies by in the blink of an eye. As a newly married couple, they will have challenges to face. Yes, I realize they’ve been together for a long time, but being married is just different. My wedding wish for them is that they love each other, respect each other, laugh together, learn together, and grow together. This will create a healthy relationship! Happy Thanksgiving, all! We’ll talk next month.

From the Runway to Real Life Your Fall and Winter Trend Report

By Holly Bell

Returning from a late fall vacation that included shopping in six states and putting together a fall televised fashion show has made me acutely aware of what is really going on in the stores for fall trends in 2018. Many of the top runway styles are tweaked to make them more wearable for the everyday person. I am happy to say that there is something fresh for everyone this year. Leather (and vegan leather) is huge this season. Along with the expected leather outerwear, stylish separates are featured in stores this fall. There is a smorgasbord this season in beautiful black, but you’ll also see colorful shades of neutrals and jewel tones. Leather pants feature a high waistline this year, which makes legs look long and sleek. Leather skirts in every length and cut are in stores now, and they’re a must-have this season. They are warm, slimming, and go with absolutely everything! I am a strong advocate of this chic trend. Designers love to reference past seasons, and this year is no different. A 1970s vibe is alive and well with fabulous fun prints. They are eye-catching in stores, in rich shades of burgundy and dark turquoise, mustard paired with gray, and other interesting combinations. Prints are eclectic and artistic, with a light-hearted touch. A lot of women are afraid to wear prints, but this is the year to try them on! Prints can camouflage perceived figure flaws and bring out your personality. My favorite print combination is a dark background floral. Elegant in a dress and classy in a long skirt, these feminine prints are pure flattery. Tall boots are still the rage this year and make every outfit look sophisticated. This is the year to be a wild thing. Although I consider it a classic, animal print reached its peak popularity in the 1980s. This year may surpass that. I saw animal print galore in virtually every store. I am rejoicing, as this is one of my favorite patterns. The standard leopard print is popular, of course, but I also saw tiger, snake, and various patterns that mix in animal prints along with others. Needless to say, keeping it simple is the key when wearing an animal print. For example, with an animal print coat or jacket, wear a tailored white blouse along with your favorite denim jean. To really play it safe, pair an animal print with all black. Still bashful of this trend? Top your solids with an animal print scarf. There’s no need to worry about matching any color. Animal print goes with everything! It looks edgier when worn with red, denim, or any blues or greens. There is nothing more chic and more fun than an animal print shoe. You will find them in flats, mules, and boots. These would be perfect to wear with your new black leather pants! Tweed and plaid are staples every fall. This year, you will find plaids done in interesting new color combinations. Menswear-

Photographic Art Surround yourself with the aesthetics and healing powers of meaningful art. inspired houndstooth and pinstripes are timeless favorites. There is one style trend I noticed that I want to pass on to you. If you are wearing a classically styled shirt, add a little femininity to it by tucking in the front and leaving the back tail out. (This is also a great way to show off a tailored basic belt that has an interesting buckle.) Worn this way, a tailored shirt looks particularly stylish and shows off your waistline, but it still looks more polished than wearing the shirt completely untucked. There are also some trends carrying over from last year that designers and customers can’t seem to live without. The interesting sleeve is still very much a part of 2018 trends, along with velvet. Lace and insets of lace are still in vogue. You can pair lace with jeans for a modern look; there’s no need to save it for a special occasion. Multi-level skirt lengths are still the rage, mostly shorter in the front and longer in the back. Tame this look with those tall boots you purchased last year. I was pleasantly surprised by what was offered in the stores I visited throughout the Midwest and the South on my ultimate fall shopping trip. There was a fresh look about the fall styles but still a comfortable familiarity. There is definitely something for everyone this year, no matter your size, your age, or your style. My advice is to go shopping and enjoy the fabulous feeling of a new, stylish outfit! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

Breathe Easier, Sleep Better Dental Sleep Apnea Center

By Kit Boesch

Sleep is a time when your body regenerates itself. If you don’t get enough sleep, it negatively affects your mental state, your physical health, and your social interactions. Sleep deprivation can make it difficult for you to concentrate or be productive, and it can increase your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and depression. Of course, any one of us can stay up too late from time to time and then spend the next day dragging, nodding off during meetings and making close, personal friends with the coffeemaker. However, if you find that you often feel excessively tired during the day, even if you go to bed at a reasonable hour, or that you wake up many times during the night without really knowing why, you should talk to your doctor and get a prescription for a sleep study to find out why you’re not sleeping. There are many reasons that sleep can be interrupted, and one of the most serious is sleep apnea. If left untreated, sleep apnea can be a key factor in increased risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease, memory loss, impotence, or neuropathy. The really scary thing is that many people don’t even know they have sleep apnea—they just know they’re tired. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can affect both men and women. Signs might include loud snoring, insomnia, restless sleep, mood changes, or a decreased interest in sex. When you experience an episode of apnea, your heart rate speeds up while your blood pressure and oxygen levels plummet. These things may bring you out of the deep sleep you need and put a great strain on your body. If you’ve been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, it’s time to talk to Lincoln sleep apnea specialist Dr. Claire Haag. Dr. Haag works at the Dental Sleep Apnea Center at Pioneer Greens Dentistry. She is one of only two board-certified specialists in Lincoln recognized by the American Association of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM). Respected nationally, Dr. Haag keeps current by speaking at and attending conferences all around the country. At your first appointment, Dr. Haag may review your sleep apnea test with you and then discuss various options for treatment. One option is the use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. This is a portable machine that consists of a small box with an air hose attached to a mask that fits over your face. You wear the mask while you sleep, and it uses constant air pressure through the mask to keep your airways open safely. Though it has disadvantages (for example, carrying the machine and its parts around when you travel; having to wear a mask while you sleep), the CPAP machine was, until recently, the only effective treatment

12

available for obstructive sleep apnea. However, today there is an effective, comfortable, and durable alternative to CPAP. Custom-made oral appliances to treat obstructive sleep apnea are created to fit your jaw, much like—but smaller than—dentures. Dr. Haag explains that they work by moving the jaw forward and increasing the size of the upper airway as you sleep. This reduces the air resistance that leads to sleep apnea and snoring. Oral devices are designed for maximum comfort, with the user in mind. They’re easy to clean and easy to bring along when you’re traveling. Dr. Haag and the staff at Dental Sleep Apnea Center will make a custom impression of your jaw to create an oral appliance that is in accordance with required medical standards. You will have the opportunity to try on your appliance and make slight adjustments for comfort, as needed. If you or someone in your family thinks you may have obstructive sleep apnea, there’s no need to suffer. Make an appointment with Dr. Haag at the Dental Sleep Apnea Center in Lincoln. She might recommend that you get a sleep study done at a local hospital. If your diagnosis is obstructive sleep apnea, make a followup appointment with Dr. Haag for treatment. Options have never been as effective and easy to use as they are today. Aren’t you tired of waiting for better sleep? Dental Sleep Apnea Center is a part of Pioneer Greens Dentistry, located at 4444 South 86th Street, Suite 101, in Lincoln. To reach them by phone, please call 402-858-8176. A Woman’s Work

The Thoughtful Holiday We Are All Grateful

By Sharon Knierim

It comes at almost every Thanksgiving dinner. You know— that moment when the host or hostess insists we all go around the table and share with everyone what we are truly thankful for. You only get one crack at this each year, and you naturally want your contribution to be outstanding and appreciated. When participating in these marathon responses, I am always grateful to be the first person to name what I consider my biggest blessing. By doing so, I’m off the hook and don’t feel that I have to compete with the folks who must have come prepared with a speech, which, by the way, is always impressive. Their monologues compare to those mimeographed Christmas letters that hail the success of an entire family and often resemble a 1970s TV script. By the time six or seven guests have told us about their blessings, it’s hard not to repeat what has already been said. I have found myself thinking, “Oh, I like that. Maybe I can incorporate that into how we got rid of the dog’s fleas.” Do you ever get the feeling that these little speeches become comparative? When the guy across the table tells us that he’s grateful for getting such a good deal on his new Alfa Romeo,

and I am planning to share that we are happy that little Timmy has stopped wetting the bed, it doesn’t seem like we are on the same level. Wouldn’t it be delicious if, one year, we all got naughty and said what we really were thankful for at that very moment? We would probably hear things like, “Thank goodness Aunt Hazel didn’t dry out the turkey this year,” or “Aren’t we all glad that Uncle Iggy couldn’t make it because he always thinks that wearing a lampshade as a hat makes things more festive?” or maybe “We can all raise our glasses to your not bringing your bratty six kids this year.” Sounds mean-spirited, doesn’t it?

Maybe we should not plan on doing that. I think that there is almost nobody who is not thankful for something in their lives. In fact, when you ask people what they are most grateful for, nearly all of them respond with something about their good health or a detail about their close family and loved ones. We seem to be mainly thankful for the basics of life. Everyone who enjoys good health should understand what a blessing that is. Being able to access healthy and nutritious food and clean water should never be taken for granted. The gift of living in a warm and stable home, protected from the elements, is not a blessing that everyone enjoys. Although the kiddos may not agree, having a safe and forward-thinking school is also a bonus for which we should all be thankful. Have you planned what you’ll say this Thanksgiving if you’re asked what you are most thankful for? It might be fine to stop and think about it, even if you are not asked. One day, as I was driving and listening to public radio, I heard about people in another country who were being bombed day and night. Although it wasn’t Thanksgiving Day, I was certainly willing to give thanks that I can drive to the supermarket without much chance of being attacked or kidnapped or blown to bits. Think about it. Here in America, we have much to be thankful for. It is so easy to take these blessings for granted! I am often guilty of that, but it’s an opportunity to rearrange priorities and decide what is really important in our lives. Of course, not everything has to be a big event. Some of the smallest happenings in life are true treasures and gifts to us. If you are hosting the Thanksgiving festivities this year and are contemplating the tradition of letting everyone announce what they’re grateful for, why not change it up a bit? Instead of doing the oral version of this exercise at the table, let everyone write on a slip of paper or index card what they are thankful for. Collect all the cards and drop them into a basket or bowl. Draw them out one at a time, read them to the guests, and let them figure out who wrote each one. It just might happen that people truly enjoy that. Whatever your Thanksgiving plans are, I hope you have a wonderful holiday. This is my favorite holiday of the year, and I am thankful for it. Have a happy Thanksgiving. WE

The Future Is Now! Bring Your Home Into the Age of Technology

By Robyn V. Powell

In less than a decade, smartphones have revolutionized our society. How we communicate, manage our finances, and access information has radically changed with the wide adoption of this powerful tool. As technology advances, the next major step forward is fully integrating it into our homes, placing the same seamless management of our home’s systems conveniently at our fingertips. There’s an exciting new trend in digital innovation underway, bringing technologies that deliver connectivity, efficiency, and energy savings. Right now is a great time to explore how transitioning to a smart home gives you a whole new level of control over your surroundings. For most of us, keeping our families safe and our homes secure is priority one. Give your loved ones enhanced protection by installing a home security system that allows doors to be locked, security systems armed, and cameras monitored from the convenience of your smartphone. Alerts sent directly to your phone let you know if anyone enters or departs the home or if any suspicious activity is detected. Video doorbells add another layer of security, allowing you to screen and record guests, check on deliveries, and receive alerts and videos on your phone when motion is detected. Investing in smart technologies can save you money, over time, while enhancing the resale value of your home. Thermostat control, for example, can result in energy bill savings of 10 to 30 percent, quickly paying for the initial equipment and installation costs. Smart systems

Remote connectivity allows you to control and adjust the thermostat from your car or while on vacation. You can also control lights and window treatments from a touchpad in your home or from anywhere on your phone. Smart sprinklers simplify lawn and garden care and reduce water consumption. Instead of fixed timers, smart systems rely on sensors to determine watering needs and deliver the right amount of water at the right time. One of the most revolutionary smart technologies has been the development of voice-controlled devices. Alexa, for example, is a virtual personal assistant developed by Amazon. The smart wireless speaker responds to verbal commands. Managing your calendar; controlling lights, temperature, and appliances; or updating your shopping list are just a few of the ways Alexa can streamline your life. You can ask Alexa to pre-heat the oven, let you know how much time is left in the wash cycle, or operate the remote vacuum cleaner. Managing the operation of home systems with voice control is a game changer for elderly or disabled homeowners, giving them the ability to live independently in their own homes. Alongside the evolution of ever-flatter, ever-bigger TVs, manufacturers have introduced curved-screen sets to the market. Curved sets make a striking visual in a room, but what do they add to the viewing experience? According to experts, curved screens that are 65 inches or larger provide a more immersive viewing experience, adding a cinematic quality that is similar to watching a movie at the theater. Most TVs don’t sound as good as they look, so if your goal is to heighten the cinema experience, investing in enhanced sound quality can be a great option. Streamlined sound bars mounted on the wall or a shelf directly beneath a TV can boost the sound quality and are less expensive than adding a new surround sound system. Sound bars operate by remote and contain several speakers; some even include rear speakers to give you the full surround-sound experience. Alternatively, a total surround sound system requires placing several speakers in different areas of a room to deliver room-filling, cinema-like surround sound from every direction. Having a surround sound system installed can be costly, but they can’t be beat for action movies that are best enjoyed with dynamic surround sound systems—where a subwoofer adds oomph to every explosion and viewers hear every tire squeal. Taking advantage of smart home innovations can make the management of your day-to-day life more convenient and secure. The future is already here, so bring your home along for the ride! Enjoy the many benefits of a more modern and functional living space, whether you’re at home, at work, or on vacation. Good Looks

Seeing Clearly The Latest in Eyewear

By Loretta McCollum

Not long ago, those of us who needed corrective eyewear were often considered clumsy, frumpy, nerdy, or awkward. Wearing glasses did nothing for one’s social life. Those weighty, burdensome “Coke bottle” lenses were continually being pushed up and creating nose craters. Fear not, my near-sighted, far-sighted, astigmatic comrades! The labels of clumsy, frumpy, nerdy, and awkward have been replaced with cool, flattering, notable, and attractive. Today’s eyewear functions as a fashion accessory. With the multitude of colors and styles available, your glasses can match your personality, your wardrobe, or both, with limitless options. Frame components are better than ever, and designers like Calvin Klein, Armani, Prada, Michael Kors, Chanel, and Coach, to name a few, produce eyewear lines. Let’s start by learning the three types of eyecare professional: optometrists, ophthalmologists, and opticians. You will most likely visit at least two of these professionals in your eyewear quest, depending on your needs. What’s the difference? An optometrist is a doctor of optometry who performs eye exams and prescribes glasses and contact lenses. Optometrists diagnose eye conditions like glaucoma and cataracts, and they can prescribe medication. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who attended medical school and then did a medical residency in the area of ophthalmology. They can perform many of the same functions as optom-

etrists, but, unlike optometrists, they can perform eye surgeries and treat serious eye conditions. Finally, there is the optician. This individual prepares and dispenses lenses and frames. Opticians are not eye doctors, and they cannot write prescriptions, but they are the key to well-fitting, flattering frames with the correct lenses. Those Coke bottle lenses were heavy and thick because they were actually made of glass. Most of today’s lenses are plastic. They are light and thin, impact-resistant, and can correct vision better than ever before. Lenses are not one-size-fits-all! Lens choice is dependent upon several factors, including prescription and lifestyle. Many people over age 40 need multi-focal lenses (either bifocals or trifocals), but gone are the days of that telltale line in the lens. The transition is now seamless and invisible to the naked eye. Many lenses now have a scratch-resistant coating and ultraviolet protection built in. If your lenses don’t, it’s worth the extra costto

add them. Even newer plastics can get scratched, and ultraviolet protection helps decrease the risk of cataracts. Anti-reflective coating is helpful for those who spend a great deal of time at a computer or who have issues with night glare. Like lenses, frames have come a long way, baby! Today’s frames are typically constructed from metals, plastics, or a combination of both. Titanium lenses are lightweight, durable, corrosion-resistant, and available in many colors. Graphite frames are also lightweight and are known for both durability and flexibility, making them an excellent choice for an active lifestyle. Aluminum frames are popular with designers, and beryllium frames are a less costly alternative to titanium. Play lots of sports? Consider nylon frames. Wooden frames are also becoming popular. Modern eyewear is focused on fashion, not just function. Color trends range from bold colors like red, teal, or purple to clears, grays, and soft pastels. Bold and soft shades are often combined. Warm neutrals like honey, caramel, and coffee are in style. Traditional colors like tortoiseshell and black are constants. Frame style and shape trends are a mix of retro and contemporary, of bold and understated. Tortoiseshell cat’s eye frames are in, as are black frames (rectangular for men, round for women). Big and bold is trendy, as is transparent, light, and thin. Oversized square frames and classic aviator glasses are also fashionable. Consider your facial features when selecting frames. Wide frames flatter a full face, while thin, round frames soften the angles of a square face or shorten a long face. Angular, narrow frames complement the soft features of a round face, and bottom-heavy frames balance a heartshaped face. The oval face is fortunate to look good in just about any frame. After you’ve chosen the ideal frames, you want to make sure they fit properly. This is where opticians really shine. They help with frame selection, but it’s also their role to ensure that your glasses fit comfortably. Here are some guidelines: The temple of the frame should go straight back, touching just before the ear, not along the side of the head. The stem should be long enough to reach well behind the ear. All (or nearly all) of the frame should touch both sides of the nose, with no gaps. Work with your optician, and your glasses will fit like a glove. Emerald Market Sisters Bring Their Passion for Fashion to You

By Mia Azizah

Sisters Chelsea and Courtney are the owners of Emerald Market in Roca, Nebraska (just south of Lincoln). Chelsea and Courtney fondly recall clothes shopping with their mother and their other sister. They helped each other choose dresses that made them feel confident, and they always ended up with beautiful, fashionforward dresses, with shoes and accessories to match. Their fiery passion for fashion has stayed within them and has deepened their bond of sisterhood. Now, it has even turned them into business partners! One day, Courtney told Chelsea about her idea to transform the cute barn that was next to their property into a fashion boutique. After considering how to manage a retail business while working their other full-time jobs, they decided to move ahead and renovate the barn. They saw the barn as a treasure that could be beautifully preserved to make their dream of opening up a boutique into a reality. The exterior of the building and wood flooring is original and rustic. The interior is more modern, like a stylish, classic, and sophisticated boutique. In the spring of 2018, their dream came true when Emerald

Fresh Concept

Investment Strategies for Retirement Live the Retirement You’ll Love By Kylie Gumpert

It should be an incredibly exciting time, but so many of us are completely unprepared for what we work to do our entire lives—retire! According to a 2018 study by insurance company Northwestern Mutual, one in five Americans say they have absolutely nothing saved for retirement, and one in three have less than $5,000 saved. If you don’t have enough money saved to retire, you may have to work longer, and you may not be able to fulfill retirement dreams or even live independently in the future. That definitely paints a grim picture, but there’s still hope. Even if you haven’t been saving for retirement, starting now is going to make your future a whole lot easier to manage. Why are so many Americans financially unprepared for retirement? There are several possible reasons why people don’t save. Some people prioritize paying down their current debt. Some people struggle to pay their current bills and believe they don’t make enough money to save. Some people don’t think they’ll need retirement savings. Some people aren’t saving just because their employers don’t offer a workplace retirement savings plan and they don’t know how else to get started. Some of these reasons are misconceptions, and they can be overcome. If you set aside just $20 a month from age 20 to age 67, you would end up with $80,000. That may not be enough to retire (most experts recommend around $1 million or more), but it demonstrates that saving any amount is better than not saving at all—even if it’s an amount so small that many Americans would overlook it as spare change. Most of us know that the best time to start saving is as soon as possible so that money has more time to grow in a 401(k) retirement account, an individual retirement account (IRA), a pension plan, or even as a stock investment. For those who are late to the saving game, there are often modifications that can be made, such as downsizing and eliminating expenses and bills, to ensure that retirement is a viable option down the road. Planning for retirement should include some forethought, such as how much money you think you’ll be spending (based on how much you spend now), how long you think you will live, and which saving options will produce the return you need. If you are sick or your family history makes it likely that you’ll develop an illness or disease, be sure to consider how medical bills might impact your retirement savings. Depending on your age and family status, it might also be important to consider how much marriage or children could change your savings strategy or the amount you’ll still need to save to stay on track for retirement. Getting started involves making a decision about where you’d like to save your dollars: in an employer’s 401(k) or pension plan, an IRA, a Roth IRA, stocks or bonds, or a mix of these options. Your employer’s 401(k) is often your best bet, as most employers will match up to a certain amount of whatever

26

you save (sometimes as a percentage, sometimes as a flat dollar amount). Experts recommend putting in as much as an employer will match because, at the end of the day, that’s free money. Generally, you want to put at least 10 percent of your income toward your 401(k) to reap the most reward over time. Still, there are limits to how much you can invest each year. In 2018, employees cannot invest more than $18,500 into a 401(k), while employers cannot invest more than an employee’s annual compensation. In total, these contributions cannot exceed $55,000. This is a particularly important point for older people who have not already been saving sufficiently and would like to put higher amounts of money in an account now to “catch up.” Another great reason to get started saving with your employer’s plan, no matter what kind of plan your employer offers, is that some saving is always better than no saving at all.You can always begin saving in your employer’s plan and then move your money elsewhere if you decide a different type of investment will work better for you. Pension plans are not commonly offered these days because they are seen as significantly riskier than the now-popular 401(k). With pensions, employees do not have control over investments, but their employer promises to provide a certain monthly income once the employees retire. An IRA is an option you can pursue if your employer does

www.womensedition.com

not offer a retirement savings option or if you want to save beyond the limits of your 401(k) plan. The annual contribution limit is $5,500 ($6,500 for those age 50 and older, to give them an opportunity to catch up, if necessary). Depending on your situation, a Roth IRA may be recommended because the money is invested post-tax. This means that when it comes time to take money out of the account for retirement, no tax is owed. This is unlike other retirement plans, which offer an annual tax break so that money can grow more quickly over time but require that those taxes are paid back when dollars are withdrawn. Diversity is key in investing and minimizing risk, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to be choosing individual companies to invest in. A passively managed index fund can be a great choice for retirement saving. These funds buy all the stocks in a major market index (like the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average), in the same proportion that they appear in the index. The fund then passively holds those stocks without making any attempt to trade them to improve performance. Having just one index fund may sound like you’re putting all your eggs in one basket, but you’re really not—these indexes contain all of the major companies in the United States, so you’re really investing in many different and successful companies at once. An index fund will provide the same investment return as the American market at large, so it’s a pretty solid bet. To get started with a 401(k), you’ll need to work with your employer to determine how aggressive you want your portfolio to be, what their match offer is, how long you would need to stay in the plan to receive payout, and how much money you’d like to contribute. Target-dated funds, which adjust their mix of stocks and bonds to be less aggressive as the participant ages, are a common choice and are often a reasonable place to get started saving.

To get started with an IRA or Roth IRA, you’ll need to work with a bank, a mutual fund company, or a brokerage firm to open an account. Some companies may require a certain deposit amount to get started, while others have no limit for opening an account. From there, you’ll need to figure out your investment strategy, including how much you’d like to put into your account as well as the portfolio of stocks and bonds that you’d like to purchase. You can work with a broker who can help select funds that are appropriate for your needs or lean on a “robo-investor” that will digitally form your portfolio based on how you answer questions about your age and retirement goals. You can also work with a broker or “roboinvestor” to invest in stocks or bonds outside of a 401(k) or IRA. For a fee, financial advisors can help you navigate plan or investment limits, qualifications, terms or agreements, and overall portfolio diversification so that you aren’t left alone to sort it all out. While actively managed funds won’t necessarily bring better investment returns, some expert advice can be a great asset to someone who is just starting to save for retirement, who doesn’t know much about the process, or whose investment situation is complicated. Once a year, you should check on your investments or have a meeting with your broker to make sure things are looking the way you want them to. Saving for retirement can sound like a daunting task (and $1 million can sound like a daunting number!), but the hardest part is getting started. Do yourself a favor and make yesterday the last day that you didn’t save for retirement. Call the bank, look for a financial advisor, chat with your employer, or set up an automatic withdrawal today to get started on the path toward the retirement you deserve. Pharmacy Solutions The Medication You Need, Customized for You

By Natalie Schwarz

When Lyndell White, Pharm.D., R.P., was in pharmacy school, she dreamed of owning her own pharmacy someday. In 2004, she was managing National Pharmacy Specialties, and the owners were planning to sell the pharmacy to a big corporation. Lyndell had a decision to make. “I had a choice, at that time, to work for corporate America or to buy the pharmacy and make my dream come true,” Lyndell shares. She took the risk and bought the business she had helped build. She kept the name National Pharmacy Specialties until 2013, when the company moved to its current location in south Lincoln. To reflect how hard pharmacists work to find the best solutions for their patients’ issues, she renamed the business Pharmacy Solutions. “Although we had a new name,” she notes, “we had the same staff and the same business philosophy.” That philosophy (“Personalized medicine with a family feel”) still holds true today. What makes this pharmacy unique is the personal service they give to each of their patients. “The pharmacists are available to talk to any patient for any length of time. They are personable and want to help find a solution that works. That’s the service you won’t find at other pharmacies,” Lyndell says. Pharmacy Solutions is a compounding pharmacy, which is one of the reasons they can provide such customized solutions for their customers. In a compounding pharmacy, medications are mixed on site. The pharmacist can create a compounded medication that is based on a practitioner’s prescription and is mixed with individual ingredients to the exact strength and dosage required for the patient. Pharmacy Solutions can prepare a multitude of customizable compounds that are additive-free. This independent, locally owned pharmacy specializes in hormone therapy, pain management, and compounding services for veterinarians. Lyndell became interested in compounding because it lets her be creative and makes use of her knowledge of organic chemistry. In this field, she gets to create new formulas that can improve the quality of life for their clients. “It’s rewarding to know that you are using your gifts to make a difference in someone’s life,” she says. Recently, Pharmacy Solutions hired Dusty Nelson as the director of the Ideal Protein program. This new program is aimed at helping people lose weight and learn how to live a healthy lifestyle. Dusty, an exercise science major, has always enjoyed exercise and been fascinated by how the human body works. She is currently working toward her master’s degree in counseling, which will be greatly beneficial when working with patients enrolled in the Ideal Protein program. “There are always issues behind the reason people eat the way they do,” Dusty explains. Ideal Protein is a four-phase, education-based program that allows women to lose one to three pounds a week and

28

men to lose two to four pounds a week when the program is followed correctly. It’s structured weight loss that supports muscle mass. “Ideal Protein is more than bars and shakes,” Dusty points out. “It’s a lifestyle change.” Participants attend weekly one-on-one meetings, at which they are weighed and have their measurements taken. “Sometimes, weight loss isn’t just numbers on the scale, but also inches lost,” Dusty explains. Each participant is asked to keep a journal throughout the program, and these entries are reviewed weekly. “It feels rewarding when clients reach their goals,” Dusty says. The pharmacists and pharmacy techs at Pharmacy Solutions not only take the time to listen to their clients and create good formulas, they also follow up with their clients after the medication is delivered. “What makes our service different from other pharmacies is that we follow through on our personal service and quality products,” Lyndell explains. Satisfied clients leads to good word-of-mouth advertising, and Pharmacy Solutions has lots of repeat customers. Pharmacy Solutions does not accept insurance as payment for their services—a decision that comes with advantages and disadvantages. Many clients are accustomed to using their insurance to help pay for medications, so the transition may be challenging. However, by controlling their own prices, the pharmacists are able to keep their costs low and still get their quality products to their customers. Challenges aside, this pharmacy has very little turnover of employees and has many satisfied patients who spread the word about Pharmacy Solutions. Some referrals even seem to come from pets—customers might come in for a vet issue and learn that this place can attend to their personal medication issues, as well. Empowering their clientele to take charge of their own wellness is Pharmacy Solutions’ biggest goal. “We truly believe that where there’s a symptom, there’s something wrong on the inside,” Lyndell concludes. “Let us help you find the solution.” Pharmacy Solutions is located at 5750 Hidcote Drive, in Lincoln. Income Outcome

Always Thanksgiving The Power of Appreciation Thanksgiving—what a wonderful tradition our forefathers started. They made a decision to take the time to relish in appreciation of all that they had in their lives. “Appreciation of what we have is at least one-half of the true way of life.” —Samuel F. Clarke Appreciation is a very powerful emotion. Think about this. It is impossible to stay in a negative place when we make the decision to focus on appreciation. Anger, depression, fearfulness, anxiety—they cannot stay with us if we decide to shift our attention to appreciation. If we appreciate something—anything—it’s like a “quick fix” to all that ails us! “One of life’s gifts is that each of us, no matter how tired and downtrodden, finds reasons for thankfulness: for the crops carried in from the fields and the grapes from the vineyard.” —J. Robert Moskin When our energy shifts, we are able to see things from a different perspective. From this new vantage point, we are able to find new answers to the challenges we are facing. We are able to begin creating a new experience of reality in our lives. We will begin to feel a whole lot better—emotionally, physically, mentally, and

By Janet Van deWalle

spiritually! That is a great reason to go on a rampage of appreciation. The challenge, for some of us, is that we have becomes so accustomed to feeling bad that we don’t even know where to begin. We have become so angry, depressed, fearful, or anxious that we struggle to find anything in our lives that we can truly be grateful for. “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” —Henry David Thoreau Let’s begin by being grateful to the stream of pure positive energy for handling so much of what makes our lives possible. It makes certain that the sun rises in the morning and that the Earth stays in its perfect orbit in the Universe. What this basic appreciation will do is shift our energies. It will provide us with a new starting point in our day. Next will come more thoughts of things to appreciate. It has to happen—it’s the Law of Attraction—the most powerful law in the Universe. The more we put our attention towards something, the bigger it will get. We will find ourselves moving from the basics to more specific experiences/things we are thankful for. Our health. Our relationships. Our freedom. Then, we’ll be on a roll. We will find that it gets easier to stay in this place of appreciativeness and it feels great to be there. What we will find is that we experience every day as Thanksgiving day! WE

I Am Thankful For… The Lessons Left Behind For the past few weeks, I’ve been going through boxes of stuff that’s been in storage for years. I found some real gems! Among these were savings certificates issued by the USPS in 1939, which probably have more value historically than monetarily. Of more personal interest were guest books and sympathy cards from the funerals of family members. The penmanship in these guest books and cards is outstanding! The lesson: It’s a shame that handwriting doesn’t receive the attention in school that it once did. Write more legibly! The most exciting find was a notebook that belonged to my husband’s maternal grandfather. Of great interest was a letter Grandpa wrote to Grandma on first starting his job with the Railway Postal Service. “Today we traveled from Schuyler to Omaha…eight hours. I had to spend $10.00 for a suit…three pieces because I need a vest. There’ll be expenses for room and board at overnight stops. I’ll deposit my pay and send you the receipt.” The real gem was a typed sheet with the lineage of his great-great-grandfather, all the way back to the mid 1700s. His grandfather was the 14th of 15 children. Now we have definite roots for the Adams side of the family. The lesson: Don’t just throw stuff away…go through it! In the collection from Daddy’s funeral, I recognized a lot of the names. I was 20 when he died and was just getting to know him as an adult. The people who took time to attend his funeral and send cards attested to the respect his coworkers held for him. I’ve

By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS

learned more about him over the years as my husband worked with some of the same people. Daddy’s legacy: Be yourself. Treat others as you want to be treated. My younger brother, Doug, died 20 years later at age 34, doing one of the things he loved—mountain climbing. D lived his life doing the things he loved because he enjoyed them, not because others thought he should. He followed his bliss! Mama’s collection included condolences from people who ranged in age from their 20s (not counting her grandchildren) to those in their 80s and 90s (Mama was nearly 104 when she died after living a full life). That age range was there because her sense of curiosity made her interested in everything…and interesting to everyone. She always stayed in touch with the child within. To my husband, people were important because they were people, not because of their position or how much money they had. His legacy is his kindness and helpfulness to others. I’m thankful for the people who have gone before and for those who took the time to pay their respects. I’m doubly thankful for the lessons they left behind. I’m also thankful to all of you who read my ramblings. What are you thankful for? Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Walker Tire/Quick Nick’s Family Business Turns the Corner By Sarah Brown

Walker Tire/Quick Nick’s is getting ready to make some big changes. This family-owned business has always been a success because change and evolution are parts of their plan to provide patrons with consistent, high-quality service. The changes coming at the end of this year, however, are bigger than anything the company—and the family who runs it—has ever done. In 1973, Nick Vuko started working at Walker Tire. He took on his first big change when he bought the business. “I was just a baby then,” recalls Jeanne VukoBooher, Nick’s daughter. Jeanne and her siblings, Nicole and Nick Jr. (who both also help run the business), grew up in the tire store. Jeanne remembers playing on stacks of tires and running around the store while her dad worked weekend hours. Nick Sr. worked to establish a reputation for Walker Tire as a place where mechanics and sales representatives treated each customer as an individual. He started with one location downtown and grew his reputation and his company from there. Jeanne is now the manager at the 48th and Pioneers location. The next big change came in 2003, with the establishment Quick Nick’s. “This business is an extension of Walker Tire,” explains Jeanne. “It’s the place customers can take their cars for non-major mechanical services, such as oil or fluid changes and preventative maintenance.” It didn’t take long to figure out that the staff at Quick Nick’s needed to be able to care for any type of car—foreign or domestic. As always, they rose to the challenge. The next change came from the vehicles themselves. Back when Quick Nick’s was started, cars had one computer in them that ran everything. Now, the computers in cars are running “modules.” That means there are usually several computers in a single vehicle, each of them running a different part of the car. The way cars are currently built also means that a task that sounds like a simple, fiveminute procedure can actually take up to an hour. “Some cars are constructed in a way where we have to remove the entire front bumper to access the headlight to change the bulb,” Jeanne points out. The level of education that the mechanics at Quick Nick’s have to achieve keeps increasing in order for them to successfully meet ongoing changes and challenges in the industry. Now, the newest and biggest change in company history will take the customer experience to an unprecedented level. Walker Tire/Quick Nick’s has partnered with Point S, the worldwide leading independent tire dealer and car maintenance network. (You can learn more at points-development.com.)

34

Their current reach is 34 countries on four continents. “Point S is essentially like the Amazon of the tire world,” Jeanne says. “Partnering with them is going to allow us to get a bigger discount on the products and parts we need for repairs and service. The bigger discount for us means that we can pass that on to our customers in the form of lower prices.” Other changes go along with the partnership, including a name change. Walker Tire will become Walker Point S Tire and Service. All the marketing, advertising, and website design and management will be transferred to Point S, but there will be no changes to the people running the business or providing your service. “We are still family-owned,” Jeanne confirms. “No ownership was transferred.” Inside the Walker Tire stores, customers will notice and enjoy the new look that remodeling will bring. “We have a lot going on,” says Jeanne. “We’re starting over with new floors and new colors. We’re adding inviting lounge areas equipped with charging stations for phones and other electronic devices. Our customers will be able to enjoy modern, beautiful showrooms. It’s really a new face but from the same family.” Walker Point S Tire and Service will also provide new and existing clients with a more digital approach to the customer experience. All locations will have a digital menu board. Customers will look over their repairs and service with their mechanic on a 3-dimensional interactive app. They will be able to get quotes, schedule their services, and buy all of their products online—and that’s one of the reasons for the big change. “Most people now start any buying process by researching online, and they want to be able to do everything online,” says Jeanne. “We’re turning that corner. The changes we’re making will give customers that online convenience, along with the same highquality, local, family-owned reputation that we’ve always had.” Walker Tire/Quick Nick’s is still online at walkertirequicknicks.com for now. To reach Jeanne with any questions, you can call the 48th and Pioneer location at 402-488-4700. WE

Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend Jewelry as an Expression of Love and Style By Holly Tierney-Bedord

You’ve heard the old adage that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but why are these precious stones so special to us, often getting passed down for generations? How does something that starts out as a token of love or an expression of style become a family heirloom? Nearly as long as there have been people, there has been jewelry. Gemstones and other found objects like feathers and bone have been incorporated into jewelry-making for over 25 thousand years! As humans became more skilled, the jewelry that they created evolved, too. For more than a thousand years, we have had the technology that allows diamonds to be cut into the multi-faceted, sparkling attention-getters that we’re used to seeing today. You’ve probably heard of the four Cs (Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat) that determine the quality of a diamond. This grading system was created in the 1950s and is the modern standard for evaluating diamonds. Cut is the placement and number of tiny slices shaping the diamond. The higher the number of cuts and the more strategically and expertly placed they are, the more light the diamond will reflect, and the more the diamond will sparkle. Clarity is how transparent or opaque the diamond is. Clarity also considers spots and imperfections in the diamond. Clearer rates higher than cloudy. While white diamonds are what most of us traditionally associate with the look of a diamond, they actually come in many other colors. The brighter, deeper shades (pink, red, blue) are very rare and very expensive. The scale runs from D to Z, with D meaning colorless and Z meaning very colorful. Lastly, carat is the weight (size) of the diamond. A metric carat equals 200 milligrams. Because of the rarity of diamonds and the skill required to expertly cut them, they’re widely cherished and enduringly popular. While the four Cs are often applied to other stones, there really is no formally recognized or required system of grading the wide variety of other precious and semi-precious stones. Some of the most popular precious stones besides diamonds include sapphires, rubies, and emeralds. Rarity and beauty elevate a stone from semi-precious to precious. The different metals that stones are commonly set in also vary in rarity and value. Platinum, gold, and silver are all precious metals that are often used to make jewelry. Pure gold (24-karat) is quite soft. The gold that is used to make jewelry will have a lower karat number because it has been mixed with other, stronger metals so the beautiful gold color remains, but in a strong setting that can withstand the daily dings and bumps of life. The wonderful thing about jewelry is that there are so many different looks and price ranges. If you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, you can work

with a designer to create a piece just for you. If you’re interested in going this route, contact a custom jewelry designer to learn more. You’ll meet with the designer, talk about what you’re picturing, see samples of previous work, and offer any inspiration images you may have brought along. The designer will likely begin with some sketches before crafting the design in wax. At this point, you can still request adjustments to the design. After final approval, the designer will cast the mold in fine metal and add the gemstones. Fine jewelry endures because of the quality and value of the materials used to create it. However, just like everything else, jewelry has trends that come and go. These days, oversized statement jewelry continues to dominate runways and department stores. Layered jewelry and pieces with tassels are also big. Unique jewelry pieces made of natural objects, like wood bangles or leather accents, are popular. Customdesigned pieces are as beloved as ever. Yellow gold (as opposed to white gold) is also making a big comeback. Jewelry is special because it is very personal and yet its sentiment is so publicly expressed. It’s beautiful, and it demands to be seen. It traditionally goes along with the biggest, most meaningful moments in our lives: engagement, marriage, anniversaries, graduations, and births, as well as during professional, personal, and religious milestones. For many people, an engagement ring or wedding ring is life’s most expensive gift, and it’s a piece that is worn and admired every day. The worldwide, enduring fascination with jewelry goes back nearly as far as people do. Jewelry has always been known as a lasting way to show off personality, style, family history, and one person’s commitment to another. Positive Perspective

Have a Little Faith Don’t Let Fear Hold You Back “If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn’t it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?” —Unknown I don’t know…I was just wondering. It may not make sense to wonder in this way, but you can’t be creative if you put limits on your wondering. I don’t mind if I am wrong or if anyone thinks that is a silly question. It’s for fun, for creativeness. I like to wonder about things; it helps me grow and continue to be creative. I like to explore; it gives me courage. I like to take risks; it gives me confidence. “Confidence comes not from always being right, but from not fearing to be wrong.” —Peter T. McIntyre Some people seem afraid to stretch their imaginations, to take a few risks. Perhaps they think they are a little too old to be risking what they have gained. Don’t be afraid to keep your faith in the things you believed as you were growing up. You challenged things, you took risks, you stepped into the arena and participated, knowing that you could fail. Don’t stop now, because you also knew you could succeed. Have a little faith.

By Janet Van deWalle

“You block your dream when you allow your fear to grow bigger than your faith.” —Mary Manin Morrissey Many of my acquaintances seem to be growing more fearful as they age. It seems so silly. In some structured ways, they talk about having faith, and practicing their faith, but they really seem to have no real faith at all. They want to protect what they have but this is precisely what causes them to die so young—they stop living! Don’t go quietly into the day and night…into some meager, carefully measured and managed existence. Make some noise (people might think you’re singing), jump around a lot (people might think your dancing), have some fun (people might also think you’re crazy). Who cares? Don’t wake up and do the minimum daily requirement. Do brave new things, stretch yourself, have more fun and excitement. Don’t let fear hold you back. “Fear is a darkroom where negatives develop.” —Usman B. Asif Are you developing negatives in the darkroom of your imagination? Have a little faith…faith that the forces of the universe are working with you, the universe is in order, and you are in your perfect place in the universe. Have a little faith and a lot of love, laughter, and fun. WE
