Summer Vacations & Birthday Celebrations How are your summer memories shaping up? I hope that all of you have had some time to chill out, take a vacation, and do “a whole lot of nothin’!” This summer has been a hot one. I love it! I hear people complaining about the heat, and I think to myself, “This is Nebraska… remember 25 below with a wind chill of minus 40?” Bring out the margaritas! I love the heat. I love the sun. It’s as if I come alive! I rarely take a vacation in the summertime because, in my view, there is nothing to escape from. Wintertime? That’s a whole different subject. I do realize, though, that summertime is the big family vacation time. Erin, my Art and Editorial Director at the magazine, just returned from a Disney World vacation with her husband and daughter, along with her mother and aunt. They all drove down to Florida together. At almost 8 years old, her daughter is the perfect age for this kind of trip. Thinking about their road trip brought back all kinds of memories to me of road trips my family took when I was growing up. Back in the day, all eight Albrachts would pile into the station wagon and head down south to escape the terrible cold. I remember vividly a trip we took to Jacksonville, Florida, to visit my aunt and uncle. We drove for what seemed liked days, and we got into Jacksonville late at night. Our cousins, Joe and Joanie, woke us early the next morning to head to the beach and watch the sunrise. It was the first time any of us kids had seen the ocean, and what a sight it was—the sun coming up over the ocean. Unbelievable. I will never forget it. I think that’s when I realized that I was a water person. I love being around the ocean. Not that I get in it! I respect the ocean. I’m one of those visitors who sits on the beach, watches the waves come in, and goes out to walk along the sand. I hope that you have all had an opportunity to create some memories for you and your families. Summer is almost over! Before I sign off, I would like to say happy birthday to all of my August birthday buddies: my nephew, Dylan, 17, August 10th; August 21st; my son, Adam, 28, August 22nd; my granddaughter, McKenna, 7, August 23rd; and my nephew, Bo, 9, August 24th. Whew! Pretty crazy! That’s a lot of German chocolate cake to make. It’s my greatgrandmother’s recipe, and it is fabulous!

Back-to-School Trends Confidence for a Successful School Year
By Holly Bell
School shopping—just hearing this phrase triggers all kinds of feelings in both parents and children! Start your kids on the right foot this fall by helping them find their LOOK! It’s important to help them feel confident…and nothing boosts confidence like feeling comfortable in your own clothes and looking great. Kids look at each new school year with excitement, and it all starts with that all-important fresh outfit for the first day of school. When picking that special outfit, make sure it flatters the body and will be comfortable all day. Skirts that are too short, tops that are too tight, or shoes that just aren’t comfortable are not going to be winners (and may well be against the school’s dress code). The combination of standard basic jeans or leggings with a graphic tee is always a go-to favorite. The graphic tee is a great way to show off some personality! Your child can make a statement with pixelated patterns, animals, beach themes, funny faces, and more. Teens are wearing their graphic tees tucked into the front of the jean with the back not tucked in. It’s a cute way to show off a cool belt buckle. Speaking of the graphic tee, you can’t get much more cute and comfortable than a t-shirt dress. Cool and easy to throw on when the morning is rushed, pair it with cute sneakers and a jean jacket, and you have a great back-to-school basic. This look is perfect for all ages, from toddlers to teens. Stripes are all the rage this year. Big stripes, little stripes, and everything in between—it’s a subtle way to have a little flair. Let your kids mix and match stripes with other graphics or patterns to express their own fashion sense. Let them ignite their creativity! Plaid is not going away anytime soon. You’ll find plaid for girls and boys, this laid-back pattern looks adorable on kids of all ages. Another favorite is the slip dress. This was a 1990s icon, but 2018 has reclaimed this look for its simplicity and versatility. Layered

Photographic Art Surround yourself with the aesthetics and healing powers of meaningful art.
Prints • Canvas • Metals Wood • Color • B&W with a plain white tee underneath as a jumper or worn with a tie-front shirt on top or any style jacket, the slip dress can be a go-to fave for tweens to teens. Dress it up or down with booties or sneakers. Throwing a cute sweater over the top can help the slip dress transition to the cooler days of fall. Athleisure is here to stay, and cute designs in track outfits will bring out your child’s sporty side. Popular fall styles will feature a waist-cropped top with a hoodie, along with slim-cut track pants. For the girly girl who loves dresses and skirts, a cool look is a high-low maxi dress. Worn with sneakers and a denim or boho jacket, this look can show off a feminine side with flair. School shopping should always include accessories! The most necessary item for fall is, of course, the backpack. Lugging books back and forth can be literally a pain, but when carried in a cute and trendy backpack, it is definitely less so. Like a graphic tee, a backpack is a great place to put some personality on display. For sporty girls, Nike has a cute paint-splattered backpack with the logo proudly displayed in a very stylistic way. How about a bold print embellished with pom-poms? An ongoing favorite is the Vera Bradley floral look. Stop and smell the roses or posies on this feminine bag. For a little glamour, pick a backpack embellished with gold zippers. Along with school clothing, shoes, and backpacks, don’t forget the latest hair trends. Braids have long been my favorite, and they’re still popular. French braids, side braids, braids twisted into a bun—you can’t go wrong with this look, and it stays neat all day long! Crazy colors are still around for girls who are looking for a little edge, but many of them are happy with just a few strands of color or a contrasting color underneath. Waves and more waves are still the rage, along with the “beachy” hair that has been a trend for a few years now. Super-short hair is on a comeback, too, for those with the hair and head shape that warrant the look. Before the alarm starts ringing each morning, it’s a good idea to set up a few routines to help the mornings go smoother. One great tip is to have your kids choose their outfits the night before. Have them set their clothes on a dresser or nightstand so they’re ready to go in the morning. There’s nothing worse than enduring a meltdown because someone can’t choose what to wear or waiting on a teenager who goes through 20 outfits before deciding on just the right one! Preparation is the key to happiness to getting out the door on time! The bell will be ringing soon! Don’t be late for a fresh new start. Set your kids up for school success this fall with confidence, comfort, and style. Happy shopping! WE For more information, visit www.teacollection.com

Grilled Lamb Kabobs Cut a 2-pound lamb loin into 1 1/2-inch cubes. Make a marinade by mixing 1 juiced and zested lemon, 1/2 cup of red wine, 1 minced onion, 1 minced garlic clove, 1 Tablespoon of chopped mint, 1 Tablespoon of chopped rosemary, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of pepper. Mix well. Put the lamb chunks in the marinade, stir to coat, and refrigerate for 4–6 hours. Thread the lamb onto barbecue skewers (if skewers are bamboo, soak them first), alternating lamb chunks with cherry tomatoes and thick slices of porcini mushrooms, yellow or red peppers, and onion. Brush marinade over the skewers. Grill until lamb is cooked rare (or the way you like it).
ramen noodles. Cook until toasted, then cool. Mix everything when ready to serve. Add cooked chicken, if desired. Sautéed Baby Tomatoes In a medium skillet, melt 1 Tablespoon of butter. Add 1 teaspoon of crushed garlic and 1/3 cup of sliced almonds. Sauté for 3 minutes, until the almonds are golden. Remove from heat. Add cherry tomatoes and sauté over high heat for 1–3 minutes, until the tomatoes start bursting. Add 2 Tablespoons of fresh chopped basil and the almonds. Stir to coat.
Garden Succotash Put 2 cups of washed fresh lima beans and 2 cups of fresh corn kernels in a sauté pan. Add 1/4 cup of water, 2 Tablespoons of butter, and several slices of onion. Peach Salsa Cut 5 or 6 peaches in half, grill them lightly, and then peel and chop. (If you don’t have fresh peaches, drain and chop a can of peaches.) Lightly sauté 1/4 cup of red onion, a diced jalapeño, a dash of chili powder or cumin, and a bit of salt. Taste-test and adjust the spices. Add the mixture to the peaches, along with a squeeze of lime. Add cilantro, if desired. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or so. Serve with chips or chicken or fish.
Crunchy Cabbage Salad Rinse and shred a small Napa cabbage (or use a bag of prepared shredded cabbage). Place the cabbage in a serving bowl along with 3 diced green onions. Refrigerate until ready to assemble and serve. Mix together 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar, 3/4 cup of vegetable oil, and 1/2 cup of sugar. Heat until sugar is dissolved. When cooled, add 2 teaspoons of soy sauce and 1 teaspoon of sesame oil. Set aside until you are ready to dress the salad. It all began back in 1899, when it was first a private college. In 1903, the College of Dentistry became associated with University of Nebraska; in 1979, it became a part of UNMC. In 2009, the College of Dentistry clinical space (originally built in 1967) was completely renovated with a new entry, lobby, and waiting area added, making it the beautiful facility that it is today. Over the last 118 years, the College of Dentistry has worked to maintain its mission: “to continually improve the oral health of the people of Nebraska and beyond through a humanistic approach to education, extraordinary patient care, and innovative research.” The first part of the College’s mission is education. There are four campuses, with the primary location on UNL’s East Campus. Omaha houses two other campuses (one at UNMC and the pediatric dental Residency at Children’s Hospital Medical Center). The fourth location is in Gering, Nebraska. The faculty-to-student ratio is small, providing an exceptionally rich learning environment. Sixty-seven percent of all Nebraska dentists are UNMC graduates, and 83 percent of all rural Nebraska dentists are UNMC graduates. These statistics demonstrate the strong sense of commitment our dental community has to the state of Nebraska. The College of Dentistry works collaboratively with a network of practices across the state to provide a diverse training experience for its students. The college’s students are on six-week rotations at various practices throughout the entire state, which creates a broad learning experience. Much work and dedication has gone into creating this learning model for UNMC’s dental students, and this unique outreach approach delivers a sense of connection and joint mission throughout Nebraska. The second branch of the College’s mission is clinical patient care. Patients are treated in facultysupervised clinics. Student clinic fees are lower than most private dental offices (by about 50 percent). However, appointments may take a bit longer, as treatments are completed in controlled steps. The experience is really a “two-for-one,” since you get both student and faculty care. Another perk is that you can expect to be seen by the same group of faculty and students for your return visits. The College focuses on building a lasting relationship with you and your family. Services include regular examinations, preventive care, and routine cleanings for children and adults. They also perform restorative treatment like fillings, crowns, and bridges. Root canals and other endodontic care, as well as periodontal care and routine oral surgery like wisdom tooth extraction are also offered. When teeth

need replacement, they can create complete or partial dentures, dental implants, and implant-supported restorations. Orthodontic Dr. Janet Guthmiller, treatment is offered, as well as specialty services Dean of UNMC like bleaching, digital dentistry, and other cosmetic College of Dentistry procedures. Patients will receive an estimate prior to any treatment, and payment is due at the time of services. The College of Dentistry is a Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Nebraska provider. Any services not covered by BCBS of NE are the responsibility of the patient. Patients covered by other dental insurance carriers are required to pay on the day of services, and claims are then filed by the clinic. The College will work with you and your carrier to maximize benefit coverage while also providing the documentation necessary for your insurance reimbursement. In the office, patients can pay by cash, check, credit card, and CareCredit. The third branch of the College’s mission is research. Dating back to its original mission of continually striving to improve oral health in Nebraska, the learning never ends here. The College values a strong sense of community that is committed to compassionate care, collaborative learning, and a continuous exploration of knowledge. At the UNMC College of Dentistry, the 279 students, 120 staff members, 97 faculty members (54 full time and 43 part time), many volunteer faculty, and 3,800 alumni are all working toward their joint mission to provide exceptional oral care to the people of Nebraska. They demonstrate integrity, accountability, intellectual curiosity, and passion in everything that they do. Their unique culture of excellence respects diversity and celebrates their members’ strengths. Together, they deliver the very best oral health care, educational services, and research our state has to offer. If you haven’t taken the time to check out what the UNMC College of Dentistry has to offer you, you owe it to your teeth to take a look. You can expect to find the highest quality care for you and your entire family. The main campus of the UNMC College of Dentistry is located on the East Campus of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, at 40th and Holdrege Streets, in Lincoln. Free patient parking is available on the east side of the building. For more information, call 402-472-1333 or visit unmc.edu/dentistry. WE

A Woman’s Work
Generations
Is There Really a Gap? By Sharon Knierim
Our immediate family is made up of three generations. Sometimes, we all find ourselves living under the same roof. The reasons for these periods of togetherness vary—there are instances of waiting for a new home to be available, as well as other bridges to cross, that bring us together spiritually, mentally, and physically. At one time, I asked my mother if she would like to come and live with us. “NO,” she replied. She reminded me that she had already lived with her children for 18 years each…and that was plenty. Of course, I took that pretty hard. In truth, I think she was speaking to the essence of her desire to enjoy her own independence. All in all, I believe that she chose correctly—she was as self-determined as I am, and it was probably best that we did live 30 miles apart. Mother was not a frail woman, and she may well have worn us all out. Now that I myself am the age that she was when I began my campaign to move her into our home, I often feel the same way. There are a few differences between our circumstances— for example, Mother and Dad raised five children, whereas my husband and I only raised two. Even to this day, I am glad to have the next generation live in their separate apartment.
14
As we were growing up, our widowed grandmother lived with us. She was very frail and very emotional. We children made her nervous, and she made us nervous, too. Sadly, there was no communication to soothe us or help us accept each other. Of course, anyone who has lived with multiple generations under one roof recognizes that there will be moments that are less than sterling and that little hissy fits can break out at any time. Generally, however, I find it an appealing way to live. I typically feel sorry for people who live with me because I am sure that I am always right and that everyone should do just as I say at all times. However, here is where the gift is: My cohabitants
www.womensedition.com
have always been and remain pretty clever at educating me and showing me that, more often than not, there are at least two sides to a story and more than one way to consider any situation—that not everything is black and white. I know they’re right, and I appreciate what they have done for me as they work diligently at keeping my mind broadened. We may be from different generations, but we seem to share the same core values. In fact, it’s become a favorite pastime for us to participate in casual debate. We don’t solve the problems of the world, but we do all gain new insights into how to approach and deal with those problems. Throughout history, there have always been misunderstandings and lack of trust between generations. It is probably just part of living. As we grow up, it is natural for us to doubt our parents and teachers. We question authority. When we are young, we want more than anything to be individuals and to form our own ideas. In the end, everything usually falls into place. We’ve all heard the term “generation gap,” but why does it really exist and why does it persist? I believe it is human-made and human-sustained. Like so many human endeavors, it is unnecessary and totally useless. Why not spend all the time and effort put forth to promote this gap toward a better end? Understanding other people, especially those closest to us, is one of life’s most wonderful gifts. Understanding others makes thinking and decision-making much easier and more profound, and it helps us understand ourselves. Finding common ground is a process that does not often happen overnight. It takes work, dedication, and honesty, but the product of understanding each other’s values systems and eliminating gaps in communication is what brings us closer together. We won’t always agree, but making an effort to understand another person’s perspective really has no downsides. If you decide to close the generation gap, you might have to do what I was forced to do—give up always wanting to be the person in the right. Nobody is right all the time. Who would want to be? Understanding is a two-way street, and you can’t truly travel that street by yourself. Luckily, it’s much more fun to travel with someone else. Author’s Note: Research for this article was derived from four generations of adults ranging from 18 to 85 years of age. I would like to thank all parties who shared their candor and personal insights. WE

The Beauty of Choice Custom Furniture By Robyn V. Powell
If you’ve shopped in chain stores for furniture, you’ve probably experienced the frustration of finding something that was almost perfect. Perhaps it wasn’t quite the right size or color, or maybe the quality just wasn’t what you hoped. Most of us have become so accustomed to buying furniture from stores and online that we often overlook the option of custom pieces. It may be time to rethink the way we buy furnishings. Why settle when you have the option to bring something truly exciting into your home? Custom furniture brings a surprising number of benefits that mass-produced furniture simply can’t offer. Many people equate commissioning custom furniture with expensive price points and long wait times. It’s true that the initial outlay and time frame may be somewhat higher and longer than for ready-made items, but when you compare all the pros and cons, the scales tip favorably in the direction of custom options. One of the most obvious benefits is not having to compromise on things like quality or style. The knowledge that your furniture is durable and has been crafted with care from quality materials gives you confidence that you’ve made a sound investment. Choosing every design element, from wood species to the number of shelves or drawers to the small details like hardware, gives you the creative freedom to express your individuality and make a personal statement. Custom furniture provides flexible solutions for irregularly shaped rooms or challenging spaces. An efficient and beautiful way

to utilize space in your home is to introduce custom built-ins. Astute homeowners are keenly aware of the increased home equity that results from choosing quality kitchen and bathroom cabinetry. The same principle applies to built-in components such as entertainment centers, libraries, and home offices. Lack of storage space is an issue faced by many homeowners. Well-designed built-ins can maximize storage space, can be tailormade to fit any space, and can add dimension and personality to any room. Popular built-in ideas include a custom desk with useful storage for files and home office equipment; closets that attractively showcase clothing, accessories, and jewelry; and organized mudrooms with designated places for backpacks, sports equipment, and even your pet’s feeding station. Custom solutions bring style and functionality while optimizing your space. A built-in upholstered banquette can transform an ›››

awkward, cramped dining space into a comfortable and attractive breakfast nook. Tapping into unused vertical space by adding a Murphy bed will add versatility to your home office or den. Simply pull the bed down from the wall when your guests are ready to retire for the night. In the morning, the bed easily folds up and disappears, leaving floor space and seamlessly transitioning the room. Upholstered furnishings are also available in semi-custom selections, offering a middle ground for shoppers who desire a quicker turnaround time—typically, four to six weeks. Choose from available frame options and make it your own by selecting the fabric, size, and filling material. Customizing sofas, chairs, and beds allows you to design around your personal style and comfort needs. Lighting is another great opportunity to bring some personality to a room. A custom lampshade in just the right fabric and size can be the perfect finishing touch to a well-appointed room. If you’re a business owner, custom furnishings for the office allow you to design your space to reflect your brand. How you decorate your office sets the tone for how employees and clients perceive your business. A conference table topped with a polished mahogany slab, for instance, lends a significantly different feel to the room than a table made out of reclaimed barn doors. Custom furniture is a great way to let your clients know what kind of business you’re running. Investing in custom furnishings means your pieces will continue to appreciate over time, unlike mass-produced items that begin to depreciate the moment they are loaded onto a truck for delivery to your home. Furniture makers in your local community are skilled crafts people who can create any conceivable style and are equipped to use concepts, techniques, and materials you won’t find from a large manufacturer. Interior decorators, designers, and even custom home builders can often make great referrals for custom furniture makers— just ask them who they’ve enjoyed working with in the past. By working with experienced professionals, you will have the comfort of knowing where, when, and how your furniture was made. The excitement of commissioning a piece of custom furniture is rivaled by very few other purchases, delivering long-lasting pleasure to you, your family, and guests in your home. Good Looks
A Beautiful Smile Sinking Your Teeth Into Oral Surgery
By Loretta McCollum
“When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you,” Louis Armstrong sang. He was right— a smile can instantly brighten a gloomy day or lighten a dark mood. Having a great smile means having healthy teeth and gums. If missing or crowded teeth are hampering your smile, dental implants or wisdom tooth removal may be the right choice for you. These procedures are known as oral surgery. There are many reasons for teeth to be missing—commonly, the problem is due to injury or decay. It’s also not uncommon to be born missing some of your permanent teeth. Missing teeth cause an obvious cosmetic concern, but they can also lead to serious oral health problems. Remaining teeth may shift in an attempt to fill the gap, making oral hygiene difficult and increasing the risk for decay and gum disease. Jaw function can be affected. When teeth are missing, the jaw may shrink, changing facial shape and, possibly, leading to more tooth loss. Dental implant surgery is a restorative procedure that preserves the existing jawbone and stimulates bone growth. Dental implants feel and function like natural teeth, and they can last for decades. They won’t slip or click, allowing patients to maintain their natural speech patterns. Adjacent teeth do not need to be ground down to anchor tooth replacements. Dental implants are growing in popularity—over three million people in the U.S. have at least one. The procedure typically involves surgically implanting a screw-
shaped titanium rod into the jawbone. Over the next few months, the jawbone grows around the implant, creating an artificial root that is not unlike a natural tooth root. When the implant has bonded to the jawbone, a connector called an abutment is placed on the implant, just above the gumline. Mouth impressions are taken, and artificial teeth (crowns) are created and attached to the abutments. The entire process takes up to a year. Routine checkups and cleaning are still required, but patients need not be concerned about avoiding certain foods. Variations exist for patients who may not have enough healthy jawbone to support the implant or who are missing multiple teeth. Bone augmentation, involving the use of bone grafts or growth factors, increases jawbone strength, helping to secure the implant. A subperiosteal implant is a good choice to cover a large area. In this method, a metal framework is attached under the gumline, just above

the jawbone. Replacement teeth will be anchored to metal posts protruding from the framework. Implants are not routinely covered by dental insurance, but more companies are rethinking coverage. In some cases, health insurance may cover a portion of the cost, and many practices offer financing options. Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars to develop, typically making their appearance sometime between our late teens and early 20s. It’s believed that wisdom teeth were used by our ancestors to aid in chewing raw meats, roots, and nuts. With today’s softer, more refined diet, these teeth are no longer needed for survival and are notorious for causing problems, which is why 85 percent of the population has them removed. Most of the time, there is just no room for them. They crowd our other teeth, making it difficult to clean around them, which increases the risk for tooth decay. They often come in misaligned, damaging the adjacent teeth and causing jawbone or nerve damage. They may be impacted, meaning that they only partially break through the gums, leaving an opening for bacteria to enter, causing infection, pain, and swelling. Early removal is recommended, before the roots can become fully developed. If the tooth is fully erupted through the gum, removal can be as simple as any other tooth extraction. If the tooth is impacted, an incision needs to be made into the gum, and the tooth may need to be removed in sections. Recovery depends on the difficulty of the extraction. Bleeding may occur for several hours after removal. Packing the empty socket with gauze is standard procedure. It’s important to avoid spitting or sucking (including smoking), as these activities can dislodge the blood clot, causing dry socket to develop. This is a painful condition that requires treatment with medication. Facial swelling and bruising may also occur, particularly if the tooth was impacted. Your oral surgeon will likely recommend that you take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain, eat a soft diet for a few days, and rinse your mouth with warm salt water. If oral surgery is in your future, consult the experts. Periodontists, prosthodontists, and maxillofacial surgeons specialize in implants and tooth extraction. Ask your regular dentist for a referral. Proper oral care will keep you flashing those pearly whites for years to come. Oak Creek Plants & Flowers Baskets & Palm Trees & Orchids—Oh, My!
By Kit Boesch
It’s always been clear that I have no green thumb. When I was young, I truly believed that pulling dandelions and blowing the puff balls all over would bring me good luck…when all it actually brought me (and my neighbors) was more dandelions. I only recently learned that the beautiful blue flowers all over my lawn are, in fact, weeds! Imagine my curiosity when I was asked to interview one of the local hallmarks of the floral industry: Oak Creek Plants & Flowers. This is truly a family-owned and family-operated business, and it has been since its inception. A young man named Evan gave me a tour of the 9,000-squarefoot tropical greenhouse. I was certain that this was an exclusive tour reserved for members of the press, as it was absolutely incredible. I saw beautiful orchids from Hawaii, palm trees from Florida, bonsai trees from Japan, lucky bamboo and Chinese evergreens, unbelievably beautiful peace plants, bird baths, fairy gardens for inside your home, and large pitcher fountains for anywhere. There were some very unique arrangements, like the air plants (Tillandsia) planted inside shells.

On my exclusive tour, I learned two important things about this greenhouse. First, it is not exclusive at all! In fact, it is open to the public seven days a week. Second, everything in the cooler is fresh—that is, purchased directly from the growers. Items in the cooler are grab and go, so it’s easy to pick up something lovely for your hosts at the last minute. The tour continued inside the flower shop. Fresh Concept
Bankruptcy, Bankruptcy, Bankruptcy What You Need to Know if Unexpected Circumstances Arise By Kylie Gumpert
Americans have a lot of debt—over $13 billion last year, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York—and experts predict that American debt will continue to climb. When unexpected financial circumstances arise, a household’s budget can change dramatically, and debt can become a crushing burden. Such circumstances could include job loss, divorce, storm damage to the home, medical bills, out-of-control spending, or a combination of these. If you’re working night and day to keep afloat and you’re still coming up short, filing for bankruptcy might be the best option for regaining your life. Bankruptcy is an option that people can take to relieve them of debt that they have no ability to pay back or that they need more time to pay back. (Businesses can also file for bankruptcy, though the vast majority of bankruptcy filings in the United States are made by individuals.) Of course, bankruptcy is no miracle cure. It can also have long-lasting negative effects, such as making it difficult to find employment and rebuild your credit—you may even be required to sell off certain possessions. There are also certain debts that bankruptcy cannot erase. These include student loans, child support, debts owed through criminal acts such as fraud, government fines, and secured debts (debts that can be traced back to an individual item such as jewelry or a mortgage). Before deciding to file for bankruptcy, you should first know which types of bankruptcy you can file, as well as whether a different debt management plan would work for your financial situation. Managing overwhelming debt involves sorting out what’s owed and working with a credit counselor to get lower interest rates and payments. Settling debt involves working with a settlement company who makes a settlement offer to creditors. Consolidating debt involves bundling multiple loans into one with a lower interest rate, making it easier to pay off. Filing for bankruptcy should always be a last resort. To start the process, locate a nonprofit credit counseling agency that is accredited by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. This step is legally required by the Federal Trade Commission if you are considering filing for bankruptcy, as you will need to take a pre-bankruptcy counseling session as well as a post-filing debtor education course that might be in person, over the phone, or online. These information sessions and credit counselors will help you determine which path is most appropriate, explain the pros and cons of each, and help you analyze your spending and build budgeting systems to ensure that you never have to consider bankruptcy again. There are two bankruptcy options for individual debtors: chapter 7 and chapter 13. Let’s walk through an example of each option. In 2008, Dave had a steady job as a banker. When
26
the housing and financial crisis hit, his position was eliminated during company cutbacks. Jobs were scarce, and Dave had to take a position that paid significantly less than his previous one. After a while, the credit card debt he accumulated during his higher-paid days becomes overwhelming. He downsizes but still isn’t able to get all his bills paid on time. Creditors start calling him at work and talking about garnishing his wages. Dave decides to file for chapter 7, also known as a straight bankruptcy. In this type of bankruptcy, all of Dave’s non-exempt assets, if he has any, will be sold to pay off as much debt as possible. After that, all of his remaining debt will be cleared. The qualifications for exempt and non-exempt assets vary from state to state, but common examples of non-exempt assets include cash, bank accounts, stocks, collections, second homes, and second vehicles. In most cases, a trustee, who will manage the debtor’s assets throughout the bankruptcy process, determines that the debtor does not have any assets worth selling off. Still, there is always the chance that Dave will lose some of his property in a chapter 7 bankruptcy. Cheryl lives in a middle class neighborhood and works as an executive at a marketing agency. One day, she falls while doing work around her house, and she wakes up in a hospital bed. She’s had an aneurysm and will need to remain in the hospital for at least a couple of weeks. There are complications, and she learns she may not be able to return to work for a year. Her sick leave is used up, and her insurance won’t cover the time she still needs to rehabilitate. Medical bills stack up alongside her mortgage payments. Because she has no income, she can no longer afford her house payment. To avoid foreclosure, she works with a lawyer to file chapter 13 bankruptcy, through which she will receive
www.womensedition.com
an extension to pay off her debt under a payment plan. This option is best for debtors like Cheryl who have the ability to pay off their debts but not within the time frame that is required by credit or loan agencies. Still, many individuals who file for this type of bankruptcy do not reach their payment plan goals and later end up filing a chapter 7 bankruptcy. Chapter 13 bankruptcies, unlike chapter 7, place a cap on how large an individual’s debt can be. Last year, almost 490,000 individuals in the United States filed under chapter 7, while around 300,000 filed chapter 13. Filing for bankruptcy, however, is not a simple process. While not required, most debtors will benefit from hiring a bankruptcy lawyer who can consult on the case. A lawyer can also help fill out the paperwork—and there’s a lot of it. Bankruptcy lawyers should be certified and should belong to the National Association of Bankruptcy Attorneys. To file for bankruptcy, both Dave and Cheryl will need to prove that they have taken a federally-approved pre-bankruptcy counseling session within the last 180 days. They will need to file documents showing their assets and liabilities, current income, expenditures, and unexpired leases, as well as financial statements and tax records. They will also need to compile a list of all the debts they owe, including the amounts and who they are owed to, as well as a list of their property and their monthly expenses. On top of that, there are the fees—currently, it costs $245 to file a chapter 7 and $235 to file a chapter 13, plus a $75 administrative fee. A chapter 7 filing also requires a $15 trustee charge, and Dave will need to file a list of exempt assets. After filing, the court will inform creditors of the petitions for bankruptcy, and a meeting is set for 21 to 50 days later.
During this meeting, creditors and an appointed trustee will ask Dave and Cheryl questions about their circumstances and their debts owed and will sort out any discrepancies. After Dave’s meeting for chapter 7, the trustee will determine if his exempt asset list is acceptable or whether he has any assets worth liquidating. The trustee may also determine that Dave’s case should have been filed as a chapter 13. As long as creditors agree with the case and do not file a suit arguing that their debt should not be eliminated through bankruptcy, the process of erasing Dave’s debt from start to finish will be around six months. To finish filing chapter 13, Cheryl will need to work with a lawyer to file a repayment plan, either with her petition or up to two weeks after submitting it. The court will meet with creditors and schedule a hearing to decide how much she should pay, which could be anywhere from no payment to complete repayment. Once approved, Cheryl’s payments will be made to a trustee rather than directly to creditors. Late payments will not be permitted, and she should be debt-free in three to five years. Bankruptcies remain on credit reports for up to 10 years, which will make it difficult for Dave or Cheryl to get a loan or possibly even a job during that time. Still, when you consider how much they would have struggled had they not filed, bankruptcy was the best option for these debtors, despite the negatives that come with it. Having a clean slate is a chance that not everyone gets. It will be vital for them to maintain their finances and rebuild their savings to avoid being troubled by bankruptcy again. Lincoln OB-GYN Midwives Offer Comprehensive Care for All Women By Sarah Brown
Men and women are different. It sounds obvious, but it’s true—and in health care, the differences are especially important. A comprehensive, gender-specific approach has become the standard for high-quality health care. Why? One reason is that research shows women and men experience the same diseases differently. For example, the symptoms of heart disease in females are different than those commonly found in males. It’s important for your best health to find professionals who understand this and tailor their practices to that gender-specific model. Lincoln OBGYN has been serving the Lincoln community for over 40 years. Their team of board-certified midwives serves pregnant and non-pregnant patients alike, using proven methods as well as innovative and advanced technologies, and they deliver all their services with caring, compassion, and confidence. The Lincoln OBGYN midwife team of three is Dana Rhodes, Amber Walter, and Jill Dolberg. Dana says “being a certified nurse midwife allows me to educate and empower women with the knowledge and tools

they need to make individualized, informed decisions.” The term “midwife” literally means “with woman.” Midwives are best known in the scope of health care for their role during labor and delivery. Jill Dolberg, a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) of nearly 10 years with Lincoln OB-GYN, explains the advantage that midwives provide in that regard. “We come and provide labor support for women at the hospital,” she says. “That can mean helping with different position changes or ideas, breathing techniques, massage—basically anything to help make the labor process more comfortable for
The office staff and nurses at Lincoln OBGYN

women.” Increased options and the potential for some comfort during labor certainly sound appealing, but it’s not just about how it sounds. Evidence has shown that deliveries at which midwives were present result in significantly lower rates of interventions, including Caesarean deliveries. To be clear, a midwife is not just a labor and delivery nurse. As Amber Walter, another member of the midwife team at Lincoln OB-GYN, explains, “a midwife is actually an advanced nurse practitioner who takes care of women in any scope, from teenagers on.” Midwives perform well-woman care and first gynecological examinations, assess and assist with fertility issues, perform annual screenings such as Pap smears and mammograms, and provide education and care leading up to and during menopause. Midwives can write prescriptions; provide basic education in the areas of nutrition, parenting, and contraception; and generally oversee a wide spectrum of patient health outside of the reproductive scope. Seeing a midwife at Lincoln OB-GYN means that you will get more quality time with your healthcare professional than most practices are usually able to schedule or provide. “With any new patient, pregnant or not, we take an hour that first time to just sit down and ask questions, look over her health history—but mostly to get to know her as a person,” states Amber. “That’s one of my favorite parts,” adds Jill. “As a labor and delivery nurse, I’d only get to see the patient for a day and maybe get to see the delivery. As a midwife, I have some patients who have come to me with every pregnancy, and they now have four and five babies. You get to know them and their whole families because you’ve watched them grow and you’ve been with them during those most important times in their lives. It’s really special.”
Having a Lincoln OB-GYN midwife assist you through labor and delivery also means that you will have the midwife’s continued support, both immediately following the birth and in the weeks and months afterwards. “We don’t just leave once you’ve had the baby. We stay at the hospital with you and help with breastfeeding and making sure good skin-to-skin contact is established,” explains Amber. New mothers can expect a visit from one of the Lincoln OB-GYN midwives each day they’re in the hospital, just to check in and see how things are going for mother and baby. The midwives at Lincoln OB-GYN believe that one of the most important things their expertise and services provide to patients is empowerment. Jill states, “We give people information so that they can make decisions themselves and not feel like they’re forced to do anything.” Clients under the care of the Lincoln OB-GYN midwives receive the time and attention needed to find out what all of their options are for things like different types of mammograms, control over the menstrual cycle, vaginal birth after a previous C-section, breastfeeding support, and hormonal changes during menopause. “There is a big difference between telling someone what to do and having the person be a part of informed decision-making,” Amber asserts. The midwife team collaborates with the doctors at Lincoln OB-GYN if a patient’s situation becomes high-risk at any point during care. Lincoln OB-GYN is located at 9110 Andermatt Drive, Suite 2, in Lincoln. Go Ahead, Take a Shot Listen to Your Inner Being “One hundred percent of the shots you don’t take don’t go in.” —Wayne Gretzky Making a decision to “take our shot” requires a certain sense of courage. We may look at our current life situation and see that we have more than most people on the planet do. Is it even fair that we still want more? Yes, we have an idea, but is it worth the risk? “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” —Eleanor Roosevelt
By Janet Van deWalle
So, how do we know it’s the right thing to do? What if that little voice was right—and we just argued it to death? The best advice I’ve ever received on making these kinds of decisions came from my mother. She once said, “Feel your way through—listen to your gut. “ Now, growing up, like most of us, I’d been told by many of my elders to get my heart out of big decisions, and use my head. I was told to look at the “pros and cons”and analyze them until the “logical” decision became apparent. My mother, on the other hand, gave me permission to listen to my Inner Being. Thanks Mom! “The universe is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.”—Eden Phillpotts
When we are contemplating taking out shot, what a lot of us experience is that annoying little voice in our heads that pops up and starts saying things like: “It will never work…you can’t succeed…what makes you think you’re worthy of all that?” Most of the time that is when we decide to shelve our dreams. Taking our shot is a decision that each of us has to make on our own. Only we can work through the demons. Yes, we can discuss it with our spouse, family, friends, coworkers, but, when all is said and done, it comes down to us.
When we finally allow ourselves to listen to our Inner Being we will KNOW that we have chosen the right path. All the doubts will be gone, and the “little voice” will forever be silenced on this topic. We will be able to take our shot with the confidence that we will make it. We will know that no matter how many shots it takes, we will make it our reality.
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great ones make you feel that you too, can become great.” —Mark Twain
“You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true. You may have to work for it, however.” —Richard Bach

Digging into Family History Unfurling Leaves on the Family Tree Have you looked into your family history? I have always known more about my mother’s side of the family than my father’s. For my birthday, my kids gave me a DNA kit designed to determine ancestry. These genetic results were not surprising, considering what I know of my ancestors. Mom’s cousin traced the family origins to Luxembourg and created a family tree dating back to 1872. His research passed through various cousins and eventually landed with me. I now have many projects, including going through and labeling family pictures and compiling a narrative family history. A lot of the work has been done. Fortunately, I shared hours with Mom and her siblings, telling family stories and going through old photographs. My kids have shown an interest in finding out more about their ancestors. They know most of Mom’s siblings and many of my first cousins through regularly held family reunions. This project will be a labor of love. We know less of Dad’s family. We seldom met with his parents, his sisters, and their families during our growing-up years. These gatherings were shorter and less informative than those with Mom’s family. Fewer stories were told. The treasure trove of photographs was less evident. I’ve lost touch with the cousins on that side of the family. My kids have only had the opportunity to meet that side of the family a few times. One of the benefits of submitting to the DNA research is the

possibility of finding long-lost relatives. On getting my genetic results, I made some brief entries with the information I knew to be true about Dad’s family—mostly names and some birth places, with very few birth dates or other specific information. I wasn’t too sure what results my sketchy information would bring. Surprisingly, I heard from a third cousin from Dad’s side of the family. His initial email mentioned that we were related through my grandfather. (His mother and my father were second cousins.) His grandmother’s name was familiar from letters Mom had kept over the years. Now I can add to Dad’s side of our family history! I wish I knew more about my husband’s family. I know some names and relationships. I do know some of his first cousins who might help…at least with his mom’s side of the family. His dad’s side has more blanks and fewer resources. Research will help the family tree grow. Why am I sharing this experience with you? My kids have often commented that they wish they knew more about the other family relatives. A window has been opened. I hope to fill in some blanks for the kids. We’ll look at pictures, read letters, and share. Have your kids shown an interest? What do you know about your family ancestry? The time to start researching is when older relatives are still around. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Southlake Village Rehabilitation and Care Center Where Food Is Theraputic By Janet L. Schmidt
Southlake Village Rehabilitation and Care Center is a 126-bed skilled nursing community that provides short-term rehabilitation and long term skilled nursing services. As noted on the Southlake Village website, the team has “created a culture of rehabilitation and overall improvement of health. Patients are served by staff trained to meet the unique and specialized needs of short-term rehab patients. Our team is dedicated to encouraging and motivating our patients to excel in therapy and regain daily life skills.” An important segment of the Southlake Village staff is the culinary team. These staff members are responsible for preparing delicious food that meets the dietary needs of all their patients, including patients whose diets need to address celiac or renal conditions as well as dysphagia and other therapeutic needs. The facility’s new chef, Carla McKinney, is an important part of the culinary team at Southlake Village. Carla, the daughter of a wheat farmer, has always been passionate about cooking. Since she was big enough to cook, her mother would find her in the kitchen, whipping up something good to eat. Before becoming the chef, Carla had already been a part of the Southlake Village culinary team for seven years as a cook. Eating for some residents can be challenging. Residents may not be able to eat the food they’re used to eating, either because of physical limitations or because of dietary restrictions. Carla feels strongly that attractive and functional presentation of the food is important to make eating an enjoyable experience for all her residents. Carla’s new role as chef involves creating recipes, ordering ingredients, and obtaining one-on-one feedback from residents about their dietary wants and needs. She also gets feedback through the Resident Council. At council meetings, residents and culinary staff discuss food options; any resident is welcome to attend. Resident Faye serves as the resident culinary liaison. “I think they do a great job!” she raves about the culinary team. “If you want a salad or just about anything else you ask for, they prepare it. The desserts are absolutely delicious.” Registered dietician Michael Welch is responsible for ensuring the proper nutritional status of all residents. He estimates what residents’ caloric protein and fluid requirements should be while they are living at Southlake Village. He is able to monitor each resident’s weight weekly and caloric intake on a daily basis. Michael began his career in nutrition in the Army, where he trained to be a food specialist. After active duty, he went to college and earned a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics. Carla collaborates with Michael every day. Together,

they merge the culinary and clinical sides of the nutritional coin to provide Southlake Chef Carla McKinney Village residents healthy and appropriate food options that look and taste good. There are 20 people on the culinary team. All food is cooked in the main kitchen and then distributed to satellite kitchens throughout the community before it is served to the residents. Carla and Michael work together on resident issues such as medication affecting a resident’s sense of taste, resident feedback about the menu, and a resident just wanting something that tastes like home. The food at the facility is made from scratch as much as possible. Residents who prefer something other than the main dish on a given night can order from a menu of common short-order foods that are always available, like grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken noodle or tomato soup, breakfast items, and more. Some of the current residents’ favorite picks are hamburger and fries, beef stroganoff, and blueberry pie. Menu planning is done in five-week cycles. In the course of the menu planning, residents are invited to include their favorite recipes. Seasonal fresh foods available during each cycle are included in the menu whenever possible. Many of us have figured out that food has the power to help heal and restore the body as well as prevent illness. Pharmaceuticals are useful in many situations and are important as treatment options. In some circumstances, however, long-term health conditions can be improved with diet and lifestyle changes. Using food to tackle health problems is one way to regain and maintain good health, and the culinary team at Southlake Village works hard to make eating a positive part of the short-term rehab experience. Southlake Village Rehabilitation and Care Center has the staff expertise and proven track record in the community to provide your loved one with quality skilled nursing care and to meet short-term rehabilitation needs. You can reach them by phone at 402-327-6300. Visit them online at southlakevillagerehab.com or in person at 9401 Andermatt Drive, in Lincoln. WE

The Power of Dance Shimmy Your Way to Health and Happiness Holly Tierney-Bedord
You’ve probably heard the African proverb “If you can walk, you can dance. If you can talk, you can sing.” I remember seeing that years ago and thinking that it didn’t ring true—at least, not for me. Like many people, I suffered from self-consciousness and was unable to see that singing and dancing are expressions of joy and don’t have to be about displaying your talent. Who hasn’t seen a toddler, too young to be concerned with what others think, bopping along to music? They’re reminding us of something we all used to know, when we were their age: Dancing is one of the most basic human expressions of joy and happiness. Whether or not you’re a great dancer, you should get out there and enjoy it. Dancing has many physical health benefits, including burning calories, strengthening muscles, and improving balance and coordination. It also provides the psychological benefits of building confidence, making stronger social connections, and releasing endorphins, which can help fight depression. Enrolling kids in dance classes is a great idea—the sooner they become comfortable dancing, the more likely it will develop into a lifelong love. It’s never too soon to start! Luckily for those of us who missed out on formal childhood dance instruction, it’s also never too late to start. Dance instructors are used to seeing people of all ages and skill levels. Even seniors can take beginners’ lessons in all styles, from tap to ballet to jazz and more. You can participate solo or with a partner. Just like many people would rather follow a recipe than cook without a plan, many people find that following structured, specific steps makes learning to dance less intimidating. However, if you prefer to do your own steps, a looser approach that’s more about getting your blood pumping may be a better fit for you. Call your local dance studio and ask for advice, making it clear what your goals are. Someone who wants to learn ballroom dancing for an upcoming wedding will have a completely different agenda than someone who just wants to burn some calories and blow off some steam. If you watch shows like Dancing with the Stars, you’re probably familiar with many styles of ballroom dance, including waltz, foxtrot, tango, quickstep, rumba, cha cha, swing, jive, samba, mambo, and more. Less traditional dances include things like country twostep, salsa, the Lindy hop, the Charleston, and many more. Competitive dancers like the ones on that show have made a life and career out of their dance skills and dedication. They travel the world, showing off their talents and inspiring others. What’s fascinating is that dancing, like music, is truly a language of its own. Two classically trained dancers may not be able to speak a word to each other but can come together to communicate by dancing in a perfectly clear, expressive way.
While these ballroom dances are beautiful, they can look a little intimidating. Also, they require dancing with a partner (although you don’t necessarily need a partner to sign up for lessons). If ballroom dancing isn’t for you, you have many other options. You can probably picture many types of dance, like tap, ballet, belly dancing, folk dancing, square dancing, Irish step dancing, breakdancing, and more. To connect with your heritage, consider learning more about the native dances of your own ancestors. There are so many options! Once you uncover a passion for dance, you’ll never have to stop learning. If you’re unsure what style of dance is right for you, call up your local dance studio to chat about your goals. Once you’re ready to jump in, you have plenty of ways to make it happen. Most cities have a variety of dance studios. It’s also not uncommon for schools, colleges, and community centers to offer dance classes. People may also form in-home dance clubs. For instance, the dance troupes you see performing in parades and at summer festivals may be privately organized and meet at someone’s home. There are also people who offer private, in-home dance lessons. The bottom line is: If you want to dance, dance! Don’t let self-consciousness hold you back from the joy of dancing (not to mention the physical and mental health benefits). Consider taking some lessons if that will give you the confidence you need to break through and get out there on the dance floor the next time a wedding or party rolls around. While you’re building your confidence, practice at home in the mirror. Whatever you do, don’t let fear of embarrassment stop you from enjoying the many benefits of dancing. An Effective Team
Getting People to Engage
By Janet Van deWalle
Whether you are a business owner, manager, or simply someone who wants the most out of your career, there are certain things we can all do to help create a more enjoyable and productive work environment. The question then becomes: What do we do, and how do we do it? If you are looking to become more engaged in your job or to help others become more involved, here are a few suggestions. Be accessible. Everyone is busy, but realize the importance of taking time to answer questions, and share new experiences. This is especially important if you are in a leadership position. Your team needs to know that you have time for them, that they are important. If you can’t break free at that moment because of a meeting or other obligation, make sure to come back to them as soon as possible. Following up as soon as you can shows that they are important to you and to the company.
work lives. I’m not saying to act as a sounding board for all of their life problems, but sometimes just knowing that there is a support system within the company can help put people at ease. On the flip side, share a bit about yourself, as well. This will help to create a true bond, and, through that relationship, trust can grow. A strong relationship will help you all grow and learn. It will also enable you to have the harder conversations if they are needed. Be real. No one is an island, and showing that you, too, can be vulnerable allows your team to see that you are not perfect. If you make a mistake, own it—don’t make excuses or put the blame on someone or something else. Remember it’s okay to admit that you don’t know things, and yes, there will be times that you don’t know what you don’t know. Most importantly, don’t let your ego get involved. People don’t like to work with or for people who they feel talk down to them.
“Talk is by far the most accessible of pleasures. It costs nothing in money; it is all profit; it completes our education; founds and fosters our friendships; and can be enjoyed in almost any state of health.”—Robert Louis Stevenson
“Ego stops you from getting things done and getting people to work with you. That’s why I firmly believe that ego and success are not compatible.” —Harvey Mackay
Get to know your team. Show genuine interest in people. Each person has his or her own life situations, and it is unrealistic to think things that happen outside of work don’t influence people’s
Unfortunately, there is no magic formula to creating the perfect working environment. All we can do is work at being our best. Perhaps these few suggestions will help you and your team become more engaged. WE
