Once-in-a-Lifetime Event in the Sandhills! Everywhere I go, I hear people talking about it. Strangers, friends, family—everyone is talking about the solar eclipse. On August 21st, a total solar eclipse will be visible from Oregon to South Carolina. (A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon fully aligns between the Earth and the sun.) This will be a once-in-alifetime event for millions of people in the United States. We will get to experience day turning suddenly into night! The last time the U.S. experienced a coast-to-coast view of a solar eclipse was 99 years ago. People are rightfully excited! This is a rare event! The moon will completely blot out the sun. During an eclipse like this, the temperature will drop, light will take on a spooky filtered effect, and the sun’s corona will be visible as a spectacular aura around the moon. But not for long! All across North America, people will be able to see a partial eclipse. The “path of totality,” in which viewers will be able to see the total solar eclipse, is about 70 miles wide. The duration of the total eclipse depends on your viewing location. In Lincoln, we should be able to view the total eclipse for less than two minutes. One of the most ideal places for viewing is my hometown, North Platte! The sandhills of western Nebraska actually offer us the best chance for clear skies in the eclipse’s path, according to GreatAmericanEclipse.com. Historically, the weather reporting indicates clear skies for viewing at this time of year. The sandhills are known as one of the best stargazing spots in America. I lived there for 18 years and didn’t know that until now! All the hotel rooms are booked in North Platte and the neighboring towns around the date of the solar eclipse. My family has taken the opportunity to make a reunion of the eclipse. What a fun, memorable way to spend time with family! A neighbor recently asked me, “Do you think this eclipse is a higher power communicating with us?” Oh, how I love questions of this nature! After pondering this for a week or so, I think that the choice to find symbolism in the eclipse is deeply personal. It also relates to where we are in our lives with our personal development and inner work. As I’ve learned recently, inner work looks different for everyone, and there is no single direct path to growth. If you feel so inclined, attach a personal meaning or commitment to this historic event, but whatever you do, don’t miss it! (Don’t forget: Never look directly at an eclipse without solar viewing glasses!)

Simplify Summer Fashion Make Time to Stop and Smell the Roses By Holly Bell
Summer in the Midwest is a time to slow down and smell the roses, the scent of newly cut grass, or just the freshness in the air. This year, we vow to enjoy it more, as it flies by so quickly. Taking time to enjoy the wonder of summer calms our minds and nourishes our bodies. One way to make more time to relax is to simplify your daily routines. Fashion can be simplified for the warmer months, when we don’t want to spend a lot of time indoors, putting together outfits. During the colder months, it is time-consuming to put on layer after layer of clothing in order to keep warm, but we can’t really avoid it. In the summer, though, just one layer will do—sometimes, just one piece! From dressy to beachy casual, the jumpsuit has made a glorious comeback for summer 2017. Particularly flattering is the crisscrossed side-tie style. It mimics the famous Gloria Vanderbilt wrap dress that whittles the middle and gracefully drapes across the body. With a looser leg and a silky fabric, this piece could not be simpler, but it’s also elegant. Of course, there are unlimited twists on the jumpsuit. For the young at heart, there is the romper. When you think of a romper, it may first conjure up a vision of a 5-year-old, but rompers have grown up! The romper is a great vacation wardrobe addition; it’s easy and cute to pull over a swimsuit when you want to go into a restaurant but don’t have anywhere to change. One-piece summer fashion saves time by eliminating all the mixing and matching decisions we have to www.nomadictraders.com make when it’s cold outside. Another way to keep things simpler is to use one item several different ways. Essential for smarter vacation packing, multi-use pieces of clothing are also trending. The newest edition to this genre of clothing is the “luxe track pant.” Some of us may be skeptical about this, as it reminds us of our high school sports days, but the track pant is hot on runways worldwide. The secret to putting together this street style is to think of it as a smart pant. It pairs nicely with an off-theshoulder top and wedges, but it also looks good with sneakers and a tank top. With sportswear as a consistent theme for dressing this summer, effortless style is a hot trend. One thing I would advise against is wearing a complete tracksuit. Better to break up the jacket and pants to create stylish outfits that star each piece individually. My favorite summer onepiece dressing staple is the sundress. (If you find a great sundress that’s a little too bare, or if you’re expecting
6
www.womensedition.com
www.nomadictraders.com
a chillier evening, top it off with a sheer cardigan sweater or a short jean jacket.) Sundresses are youthful but not just for the young. Two of my favorite flattering silhouettes are the fit-and-flare and the chemise. If you have a curvy figure, the fit-and-flare will show off your curves in a most flattering way. If you are straight up and down, the chemise skims over your body with ease, creating a long, slim column. Another great cut for sundresses is the trapeze. This newer silhouette is more fitted throughout the shoulders and bust, flaring out to a triangle at the hem. This style is comfortable and easy to wear for most everyone. Fortunately, designers have finally decided to let us choose the hemline of our dresses. For those blessed with great legs, go ahead and go above the knee! Knee-length works for almost everyone. For a little elegance, go for the maxi or a calf-length dress. All lengths are fashionable now. Another fun thing about summer is color. Fashion designers currently favor bright colors and wild patterns, but, in the Midwest, there is very little color and pattern being worn. We Midwesterners can be quite rigid in our color choices, which makes the bolder looks from the runways a little unexpected here. Color and pattern are so on trend, and they can make a big impact that sets you apart from the crowd. As we enjoy the beauty and lushness of summer, let’s give ourselves the gift of simplicity. Put that to-do list away; it will wait. Take a moment to eat lunch outdoors. Park a few blocks away and enjoy the sunshine while you walk to your destination. Get a simple summer haircut, or just pull your hair up and twist it in a bun. Lighten up your makeup routine, and keep your wardrobe decisions quick and easy. As we know, summer doesn’t last nearly long enough in the Midwest. Let’s take the time to enjoy it while it’s here! Advanced Radiology
Innovative Response, Expert Results
By Kim Nannen
A tradition of excellence matched with the innovation of new tools and technology—it is an ideal combination in health care today. The physicians at Advanced Radiology take pride in this expert approach toward helping all patients receive highly individualized and optimal care. As a native of Lincoln now serving as the chief interventional radiologist at Bryan Medical Center, Dr. Michael Budler teams up with Drs. Allen, Himmelberg, and Pfeifer to comprise the most experienced group of interventional radiologists in the Midwest. Dr. Budler says that Advanced Radiology offers patients a uniquely focused and precise dedication toward interventional radiology, beyond the ordinary. “We differentiate from other radiology groups because we are a group of purely interventional radiologists,” he explains. “With this as our only focus, we are able to provide cuttingedge procedures to our patients and to be leaders in our specialty.” “Our team is committed to bringing the most targeted and relevant procedures to our patients,” Dr. Budler continues. “The latest for us is called COOLIEF, which is a cooled radiofrequency treatment that works to safely ablate the sensory nerves that cause pain.” COOLIEF is a minimally invasive procedure that creates a broader treatment area than most conventional rhizotomy treatments. The procedure targets chronic pain in the neck, upper, and lower back, sacroiliac joints, knees, and hips. “We are really excited about this option for our patients,” says Dr. Budler. “It provides an alternative to surgery or medication, with a longer period of relief than we’ve ever gained before. It’s the newest way of performing radiofrequency, and we are among the first to use it.” At Advanced Radiology, a commitment to excellence and innovation, alongside a reputation of national recognition, ensures that a significant range of specialized services are available for patients in the Midwest region. Dr. Budler says Advanced Radiology is the only official center of excellence for Tenex in Nebraska as well as being a Sphenocatheter center of excellence for the treatment of migraines. Carol Bors was concerned when a sore on her foot wasn’t healing. After seeking help from several sources without any results, Carol was referred to Dr. Budler at Advanced Radiology. Carol had severe peripheral vascular disease and a blockage of the artery at the knee. Using angiography, the blockage was crossed and opened with special drug coated balloons during an angioplasty. The blood flow in both of her legs was improved and her sore healed without the need for surgery. “I was very fortunate,” Carol says. “I did not have to wait to get in to see Dr. Budler. He explained to me that the reason people often lose limbs in situations like mine is that they can’t get in soon enough to get anything
12
done, which often results in l-r: Kyle Pfeifer, M.D., amputation. If I had been forced to wait any longer, I could have lost my foot.” Jeffrey Himmelberg, M.D., Michael Budler, M.D., “Dr. Budler is conscientious,” continues Carol. “He and John Allen, M.D. will tell you exactly how it is. One thing I noticed during surgery is how easily he and the other doctors consult with one another. Dr. Budler prioritizes making the best decisions about whatever needs to be done. I’ve had good luck with both legs now. And I’ve got a foot I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I can recommend Dr. Budler and the team at Advanced Radiology to anybody.” Julie Phelps began getting migraine headaches shortly after a car accident. “I was given several different prescription medications, from several different doctors,” says Julie, “and I even received a neurostimulator in my head and in my chest above the heart. A few weeks later, I was in the hospital with a staph infection, and there still wasn’t anything to help the migraines! That is when I found Dr. Pfeifer at Advanced Radiology.” After gaining optimal results using the SphenoCath procedure for her migraines, Julie consulted further with Dr. Pfeifer and was able to obtain treatments for other relevant health concerns, including venous laser ablation procedures to eliminate reflux and swelling in her legs and the Tenex procedure to fix her tennis elbow. “Amazing! That is the one word to wrap up all of my experiences at Advanced Radiology,” reports Julie. “Everyone is so friendly and personable. They know who I am. They have shown interest in all of my concerns, because they genuinely want to help me.” “I enjoy being active and spending quality time with my family. I just ran the Lincoln Half-Marathon, and I would not have been able to do any of this without them,” Julie says. “At Advanced Radiology, I am never ‘just another patient’ but always a human being. And now I have control of my life again.” “At Advanced Radiology, we are always ready to seek and perfect the most current and important services available in our specialty,” concludes Dr. Pfeifer. “We take pride in providing the best for our patients and our community.” Advanced Radiology performs procedures throughout Nebraska. To schedule a consultation, please call 888828-5424. In Lincoln, the team at Advanced Radiology serves both Bryan East and West at 402-481-3095. A Woman’s Work
Family Entertainment It’s Reunion Season!
By Sharon Knierim
Here we are again—in August. If you haven’t already attended (or avoided) an annual family reunion this year, don’t worry. You’ll probably be offered more chances as August finishes up and September rolls around. For many of us, family reunions can be painful reminders of embarrassing childhood memories or the loss of loved ones. But if you think through what a family reunion really means, you’ll see that there’s no need to avoid your annual opportunity to see these people. A family reunion, just like any other gathering of people with shared interests or shared pasts, is a celebration of the values most of us hold dear. What goes on at these events? Typically, everyone gets the opportunity to retell the same stories and jokes from years past. The same people form the same groups and reminisce about the good old days. What makes them the good old days? They are made good because we know the endings to the stories. Don’t forget—reunions can be a gathering of any group with a shared past, whether you’re technically related or not. Some friends gather for their annual Army or Navy reunion and bring the whole family. Don’t discount high school reunions! You’ve probably attended at least one of these events made up of people who were not yet fully formed when they knew each other. It can be fun to discover who they turned into and how
14
they have lived their lives. Everyone should attend at least one of these reunions to justify their own sanity. They are fun and only last a few hours. When it’s over, everyone has something new to think about. At family reunions, you are entertained by characters that Hollywood could never dream up. There is old Uncle Joe, with his insatiable love of babies. Each year, he gathers the newly born on his lap and jostles them for the annual Uncle Joe/New Baby photo. By the time the camera clicks, most of the babies are howling with fear and distrust. Eventually, they are handed back to their anxious mothers for calming, but for at least half an hour, we are all treated to terror-filled screaming and a full flow of tears. Who loves it? Uncle Joe loves it. This activity makes his year! Now, that’s entertainment! Don’t forget Cousin Maude. I hope she doesn’t know that
www.womensedition.com
her code name is Cousin Maudlin. Cousin Maude is a woman who never settled down into marriage. She claims to have never found a man interesting enough to hold her attention. Instead, she spends much of her free time distributing pamphlets about health and safety. Cleanliness is high on her list, and she loves to share her knowledge about fleas, ticks, and handwashing. (Don’t let her see you with your fingers near your nose—she has a pamphlet for that.) We love her because only someone in the family could talk to us like that, and we know she has our best interests at heart. We think of her as an infomercial that comes with its own sanitary hand wipes. Best known for his hands-on approach is Lester. I do not know whether he is a third cousin or some distant uncle, but he is best approached from across the table. He certainly is active and full of schemes. Most difficult to avoid is Hubie. Hubie sells insurance and annuities and is always on the prowl for new clients. He comes prepared with lots of information about life protection and personal financial security. When he arrives at family shindigs with a briefcase under his right arm and a bowl of coleslaw in his left hand, we know we’re in for an insurance lesson. Do we love it? Yes, we do, because he’s family, and he cares about us. No family reunion would be complete without the boy cousins getting into food fights, followed by their water pistol battles, which often soak some of the elders, much to their displeasure. But family is family, so we accept it. If you are fortunate enough to attend an annual reunion that has been archived year after year, you are in luck. One of the events we like to attend dedicates a full picnic table to scrapbooks from years past. Looking through those pages is an opportunity to see those people now gone gazing back at us. We embrace them for their contributions to the family and the wonderful memories they gave us. In the albums of memories, we can see birth announcements, wedding invitations, obituaries, and even newspaper stories about some of us through the years. It’s priceless. If you’re deciding whether or not to attend a family reunion this year, just remember: You, too, are part of the entertainment. Pack up that fried chicken and cherry pie and go have a good time. The cost of admission is only a smile. WE

Curating an Artful Home The Secret is in the Mix
By Robyn V. Powell
When the great George Bernard Shaw remarked, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself,” he probably wasn’t speaking in terms of home design…but the principle still applies. Your home tells your story, and a home, like a story, is at its best when it grabs us and takes us somewhere interesting. When thoughtfully curated and beautifully displayed, artwork is not just about filling frames but about expressing character and aesthetics. Styling a space with art allows your personality to shine through your home. Begin by asking yourself what art you love and what you like to have around you every day. Think about the pieces you currently have. Think about what new pieces you could add to your space to complement or contrast with existing pieces as well as the other items in your home. Once you have this information, you have a checklist for what you’re looking for when searching for art. Consider consulting an interior designer to help you select just the right artwork to accent your home. Visit galleries and attend events featuring local and emerging artists. Experts say the best advice for choosing pieces wisely is to follow your instincts. It only feels right if you can see something of yourself in it, if it resonates with you in a personal way. Buy pieces you love and that are meaningful to you, not
just items to fill a void on a wall. Art is like wine. It doesn’t really matter how much it cost, so long as you like it. Whether your style is traditional, contemporary, or an eclectic mix, there are many factors to consider when displaying art. From lighting to placement, from sizing to custom framing, the results can make or break a room. An interior designer with an artistic eye can show you how best to display the artwork you’ve collected. Select frames that honor the work without stealing the show, such as simple black or white frames. A consistent look avoids distraction from the art itself. Neutral mats let the art shine by not competing with it. Light-sensitive artwork such as watercolors or pencil drawings fade faster than you think, so invest in UV glass made to protect such items. Proper lighting can also improve or diminish the presentation of artwork. Large-scale paintings require wider ›››

floodlights, while smaller paintings and sculptures need only a spotlight. Lighting retailers can offer informed guidance on fixtures that highlight your art while remaining unobtrusive, focusing all the attention on the art. Sculptures, ceramics, and pottery can be displayed on tables, on shelving with books, or on a pedestal that blends with the surroundings and doesn’t compete with the piece. It’s also important to maintain a proper sense of scale. A work of art has to look like it belongs where it hangs. If it’s too small for the space, the art will be diminished in stature; if it is too large, the observer’s eye will not focus properly on it. If you have a large blank space, sometimes it’s better to go with a collection of smaller works rather than one large piece. Create a beautiful representation of your personality with a gallery wall. A collage of different styles, price points, and time periods has a “collected over time” look and tells a story—your story. Finding a common thread, whether it be a consistent color within each piece or similar style of frames, will create a sense of cohesion among otherwise differing pieces. This may sound mundane, but the number one mistake people make is hanging the artwork too high. The rule of thumb is to hang the artwork so the center is 57 inches from the floor (eye level for a person of average height). Pay homage to your family history by integrating heirloom artifacts into your collection. Framing stores and local galleries that specialize in framing use archival materials and spacers to preserve and protect family photos, cherished family letters, or vintage lace. They often make custom boxes that protect the items inside from heat and UV exposure. Create a custom display box to safely showcase wedding flowers, family recipes, and jewelry. Display boxes are designed to last a lifetime, allowing you to enjoy your heirlooms for years and then pass them along to the next generation. When it comes to artwork, buy what you like, and buy to keep. Let your art collection chronicle your life story. Carefully selected and properly displayed art gives your home a sophisticated feel. Most importantly, it will be something you truly enjoy every time you walk into the room. Isn’t that, after all, the purpose of art? Good Looks
You Are Spec-tacular! Express Yourself With Amazing Frames By Monica L. Davis
Having the perfect eyewear allows you to define your personality, customize your individual style, and shape how others perceive you. Truth be told, eyewear tends to convey intelligence, honesty, and trustworthiness. As long as you’ve got the right specs, you can convey all that and anything else you want! This season, you’re sure to find a trending frame silhouette to love, no matter what your style. To help instill a conservative image, professionals typically keep to traditional frame shapes such as ovals, rectangles, and almonds. Also professional is the “brow-line” style, which has a frame on the top of the lens but not on the bottom. These semirimless frames are simple and professional, and they look great on both women and men! Many people with creative and artistic style still prefer the “hipster” look for eyewear. These square-shaped frames are often oversized and have wider black rims. Retro frames are also trending, such as the 1960s “mod” look and cat’s eye frames. Cat’s eye frames are gaining popularity particularly in the academic and business environments. Aviator frames are also back in fashion this season. When selecting the color of your frames, you need to take into consideration characteristics such as your eye color, skin tone, and hair color. One of the favored frame hues this season is the classic tortoise shell. Though no longer made from actual tortoise shells, the pattern of these frames is a classic for a reason—whether you are
a blonde, a brunette, or a redhead, tortoise shell flatters everyone! The classic pattern also works well for professional attire. Silver, brown, or black frames tend to go with everything, including business apparel, and are suitable for men and women. If you are looking for something a little bolder, you could try red, pink, or purple frames! If you have decided to embrace your silvering hair (which is trending all on its own this season), you’ll find that many fun colors pair well with your silvery tresses. For a noticeably savvy look, consider cherry reds and sea blues. Black frames always look classic and polished and will complement your lustrous hair (I’m picturing Diane Keaton and Jamie Lee Curtis here). It’s also important to consider the material that makes up the frame. Choose a frame material with the qualities that are pertinent to your lifestyle. Plastic frames are often constructed from zylonite, a cost-effective, lightweight material often known as “zyl.” Other

plastic frame materials include polyamide, polycarbonate, carbon, and nylon (which is a nearly indestructible material great for an active lifestyle or sports). As an added bonus, many of these materials are considered hypoallergenic. Frames are fabricated from various metal materials, as well. The most common is Monel, a mixture of nickel and copper. Titanium is a popular choice for metal frames because of its lightweight durability and sleek, modern look. If you are fond of the titanium look but not its high price, you might consider beryllium frames. This steel-gray metal resists corrosion and does not tarnish. For the real eyewear connoisseur, custom frames are available in distinctive materials like silver, gold, wood, or even bone. Diamonds, semi-precious stones, and Swarovski crystals can be used to accent frames for the ultimate luxurious touch. In the area of lens technology, the focus remains on protecting eyes from the harmful effects of light (both indoors and out). Long-term exposure to sunlight or the blue light from digital screens is damaging to your eyes. Photochromic lenses, commonly known by the brand name Transitions, darken on exposure to specific types of light of sufficient intensity, most commonly UV. Transitions lenses are making great strides to protect our eyes from these harmful lights. Weekend warriors with sports vision needs might choose polarized lenses, which help reduce light reflecting off of water or snow, or polycarbonate lenses, which are shatter-resistant. Popular lenses for more complicated prescriptions include no-line or invisible bifocals and progressive lenses. These types of lenses feature smooth, less-noticeable transitions between the different focal lengths. Tinted lenses often called “computer glasses stop some of the blue light from screens from getting to your eyes. These are available with or without prescription vision correction. Obtain your eyewear, along with a proper eye exam, from an optician or a professional optical company. Once your eyewear has been perfectly crafted for you, you will still need to ensure an accurate fit. Ill-fitting glasses can be uncomfortable, affect your vision, and look unprofessional. The optician will adjust your glasses to properly fit your face and ensure that the lenses line up with your eyes correctly. Look and see your best with a new pair of glasses! Jenna Van Pelt, MD Gynecology & Fertility, P.C. Welcomes Dr. Jenna Van Pelt By Kathy Kugler
Lincoln native Dr. Jenna Van Pelt is the newest member of the medical staff at Gynecology & Fertility, P.C., the only OB-GYN practice in Lincoln that is primarily owned and managed by women. “I’m excited to be working with the great physicians and a team that is dedicated to women and their health,” says Dr. Van Pelt. “As a physician, wife, mother, and woman, I can truly relate to a lot of the things my patients are going through because I’ve been there myself. That makes it easier for me to counsel them about these issues.” Dr. Van Pelt’s path to medicine began when she was a Lincoln East High School student. She knew she wanted a career that did not tie her to a desk and a seemingly endless parade of meetings, day in and day out. She felt an innate desire to help others but wasn’t sure what field she wanted to enter. Dr. Van Pelt did not come from a family of medical professionals, but she began researching the steps needed to become a doctor. While she was still in high school, she took as many physics,

Dr. Van Pelt’s desire to help others, combined with countless hours of studying, guided her through Creighton University for her undergraduate degree and to the University of Nebraska Medical Center to earn a top-notch medical degree. “It was during my work as a medical student at UNMC that I realized I wanted to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology,” Dr. Van Pelt

Fresh Concept
Financial Advisors Are You Prepared for the Golden Years? By Connie Keck
For those of us who don’t work in the financial industry, having a “financial advisor” sounds like a great idea—and it is. But what, exactly, is a financial advisor? When should you get one? If you already have one, does she have the right expertise and experience to help you meet your financial goals? A financial advisor can provide many services to clients, including offering financial advice, preparing tax returns, managing investments, and drafting estate plans. The term “financial advisor” has no precise definition within the industry and does not necessarily indicate a particular licensure. This can make finding the right kind of financial professional for you a little tricky. According to Forbes, there are four basic types of financial advisors, though a single person may qualify as more than one type. Registered representatives, also called brokers or investment representatives, are paid on commission to sell investment and insurance products. Their primary sales licenses are Series 6 or Series 7. A broker’s job is to sell investments, not to draft your family’s comprehensive financial plan. Financial planners have no particular licensing requirements. Essentially, anyone can claim to be a financial planner, and just because someone isn’t licensed to sell investments doesn’t mean she can’t offer good financial advice. That said, there are certain professional designations to look for that suggest a person is educated in the field and qualified to provide financial advice. Your vetting process should limit your selection to those who have earned one of these designations: CFP (certified financial planner), CPA/ PFS (certified public accountant/personal financial specialist), or ChFC (chartered financial consultant). Many people who call themselves financial advisors are, more specifically, registered investment advisors (RIAs). This distinction is important because these professionals are financial fiduciaries, which means they are required to act in their clients’ best financial interests. They are held to the highest ethical standards in the financial services industry. Some CPAs secure the RIA certification to demonstrate to their clients that they can help with comprehensive financial planning. Money managers are in charge of an investment portfolio, not a comprehensive financial plan. They may make decisions for investors without the investors’ advance approval. In some families, investment decisions are made exclusively by men. It’s important, however, for both partners to take part in the financial planning and investment decisions for the family. Some things to consider: Who makes the decisions when it comes to planning for continuing education for your children or any member of your family? Does your family have enough life insurance benefits to sustain you should there be a loss of one of the income producers in the
26
family? Do you have a long term care policy? Do you have an investment or pension plan through your employer? If you don’t work outside the home, do you contribute to an IRA on a regular basis? Do you have a basic savings plan? As you work through the myriad of financial concerns and issues you may have, it is important to seek out information and a financial advisor who can help you maneuver through the maze of financial planning and help you set both long-term and shortterm goals. Finding a financial advisor who is a good fit for you and your financial goals takes some research. To get started, ask coworkers, family members, or friends if they can recommend someone. You can also find advisors through professional organizations online. For example, if you seek a CFP, you can go to www. cfp.net and click on Find a CFP Professional to search by geographic area. Many financial advisors will offer a short informational session at no charge, to see if they could meet your needs. When you speak with a potential advisor, be sure to ask the following questions: • How do you charge for your services (commission, fees, or both)? • How much do you charge for your services? • What licenses, credentials, or other certifications do you have? • What services do you provide? • Do you specialize in a particular type of client? • What is your investment approach? • How much contact do you have with your clients? • Will I be working only with you or with a larger team? • What makes your client experience unique? After the interview, recall whether the advisor seemed interested in you. Did she ask questions about you and your financial goals? You want an advisor who is interested in your individual circumstances, not someone with a one-size-fits-all-clients approach. Be sure to confirm the credentials of any potential advisor before working with her. To learn more about a financial professional, you can ask if her business is overseen by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (www.finra.org) or the Securities and Exchange Commission (www.sec.gov). The website
www.womensedition.com
for each of these regulatory agencies has a search function into which you can type the advisor or firm’s name for more information. To see if a CFP is truly a CFP, you can search for her with the CFP Board at www.cfp.net. It is difficult to plan for the future if you don’t have an understanding of where you are today. What does your current financial picture look like? Do you have life insurance, a long term care policy, health insurance, a savings plan, and a retirement account? Once you can see where you are, you can take a look at where you want to go. Review your long-term and short-term financial goals so you can discuss them with your financial advisor. What is your vision for your financial future? How can you get there? Do your current investments, savings plans, and other finances put you on the road to reach your goals? How can you stay on track? If you feel you are not on the right path to reach your financial goals, take a look at your plan and review with your advisor how it might be changed to reflect the vision, goals, and objectives you want to have in place when you retire. At what point in time should you work with a financial advisor? It’s never too early to seek financial advice. Many workplaces have retirement plans and pension plans. They probably work with an investment firm that will manage the funds for their employees. When you sign up for a 401(k) or other investment vehicle, an investment advisor will talk with you to set up your account. This advisor will ask you about your risk tolerance regarding investments and will help you select investments that reflect your tolerance of risk. After a retirement account is set up, don’t just forget about it! You will need to
revisit your plan periodically. How often to reassess your goals is an excellent issue to discuss with your financial advisor. There are some additional issues to consider when you are putting a plan together for your financial future, even though they are not strictly financial questions. If you don’t already have an estate plan, including a will, you should create one. You may think that an estate plan is just for people with sizeable assets, but everyone should have one, regardless of income. This document will lay out how your assets are to be disbursed upon your death. This is especially important if you have minor children—if you don’t name a legal guardian for them and indicate how and when they should access your assets, the courts will make all these decisions for you. These issues may seem unpleasant, but they are important, as they will affect your financial investments and planning strategy. Keep in mind that you, your family, and the financial plan you make will change over time. The needs you have today may be very different from the needs you will have a year from now, or five years, or 20 years. The important thing is that you become an active participant in planning your financial future. At times, you will have to make adjustments in your plan to continue to move forward with realizing your financial goals. This does not mean that you didn’t plan properly in the first place—on the contrary, it means that you’re paying proper attention to your financial journey. Get started! No matter what your finances look like today, you could benefit from the guidance of a financial advisor. HOPE Health Care
Comprehensive Holistic Treatment By Sarah Brown
Client testimonials at HOPE Health Care ring true to the name and mission of the business that recently opened at 3100 O Street. In April 2017, board-certified family nurse practitioner Kim Waters opened Nebraska’s first outpatient clinic that exclusively treats people with eating disorders and those suffering from poor body image. The advantage that HOPE provides over anywhere else in the state is that individuals with eating disorders and their families can receive truly comprehensive care—getting the many services they need under one roof, from a highly collaborative staff that uses a holistic care model. A lesser known fact about eating disorders is that they almost always co-occur with other issues. HOPE owner Kim is well aware of this. For a large part of her life, Kim suffered from an eating disorder that evolved into substance and alcohol abuse. “It carried on into adulthood and it really wrecked my life,” Kim recalls. Throughout her work as a nurse practitioner, Kim noted the lack of availability within the region for eating disorder treatment and the shortcomings of the conventional medical model in attempting to meet the needs of the population. She believed that
28
creating a new model was the only solution, and she set out to do so. HOPE’s therapeutic component is provided by Carli Israelson, a provisionally licensed mental health therapist and certified health coach. Like Kim, Carli has also recovered from an eating disorder. She describes HOPE’s approach as holistic. “We look at the foundational pillars of your physical health and mental health, and how the mind and body work together.” She and Kim also consider the importance of sociological contributors—a patient’s spiritual side—in achieving recovery. One mother working with HOPE describes her daughter’s anorexia as “very strong and very dark. There is shame, guilt, embarrassment, and all sorts of feelings that swirl around when your child develops
Owner Kim Waters and Carli Israelson

an eating disorder. You begin to live in a state of isolation.” Kim and Carli understand what their patients and their patients’ families are going through because they’ve been through it themselves. That level of understanding, combined with their expertise, results in a personalization of treatment that brings about success for patients who have tried and failed to achieve recovery with programs at larger conventional healthcare systems. “Once they’re here, patients realize how much time, money, and energy they could have saved if they’d only come here earlier,” says Kim. “We do it right the first time.” To become a patient at HOPE Health Care, call and schedule a free initial consultation. (A referral from your primary care physician is not required.) Patients begin by seeing Kim and Carli together. Unlike the conventional treatment model, in which specialists are located in different facilities and rarely communicate with each other, the team at HOPE collaborates closely to make sure patients get what they need. Because eating disorders can affect all systems of the body, including blood chemistry, the initial patient assessment includes a physical exam, an EKG (if needed), and lab work. Carli assists patients and their families with the intake and through every step of counseling. Within the same office, patients can see a registered dietitian to establish and stay on course with an eating plan. As HOPE’s health coach, Carli remains closely involved and well-informed in the nutritional component
of care to make sure that clients feel they can talk openly and get support. The unique family-centered approach at HOPE means that a patient’s family is going to be actively engaged in counseling sessions and educated throughout the entire process. All members of the family will feel heard, understood, and supported. “Even the financial plan is personalized,” Kim adds. “We offer financing so that no one goes without care.” Though Kim favors a non-pharmacological approach, Carli notes that medication management is sometimes necessary in a patient’s healing protocol. In order to greatly improve the accuracy and results from medication, HOPE Health Care is one of the few facilities that offers genetic testing. “I don’t know why this isn’t everywhere. It’s an amazing test, it’s not that expensive, insurance usually covers it, and it gives amazing results,” Kim says. “With the help of this team surrounding, embracing, and understanding my daughter and what she is going through, I finally feel hope,” their client’s mother concludes. “My daughter feels it, too. We are not alone.” You can contact HOPE Health Care by phone at 402-4193553 or through their website, www.hopeandhealthcare.com. This fall, Kim and Carli are initiating a campaign to increase education and public awareness about eating disorders. Lincoln’s first-ever National Eating Disorder Association Walk is scheduled for October 1, 2017. Email Carli Israelson at eatingdisorder.therapynow@gmail.com for participation or sponsorship information. WE

Trinity Chiropractic People have asked me, “What are the top two or three pieces of advice you give your patients on a daily basis?” I try to keep it simple, not only for my patients, but myself. If something is simple, we are more likely to do it. The three pieces of advice would be: (1) Drink water, or more of it. Water is the medium of life. Why do we think we can survive with so little in our daily lives? (2) Move more. A sedentary lifestyle is the downfall of our society. It not only causes pain and loss of functional mobility but often affects relationships. We are meant to move in all the areas of life; mind, body, and spirit! (3) Set yourself up for success not failure. You may want to take a giant leap, but small steady steps are often the best way to enjoy the journey into health. Let Dr. Bo and the Trinity staff help you Stop Suffering & Start Living! To learn more, visit www.trinitychiro.com. Appreciate the Now Slow Down, Enjoy Life Rush, rush, rush. Get to work early; stay late. Run through the fast-food joint to pick up dinner for the family. Load the dishwasher and clean the kitchen while you’re talking on the phone to your sister, whom you haven’t had a chance to call in weeks. “Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson Just like any other creation in our lives, the ability to create more time begins with a decision. Does that mean we need to lessen our wantings? No. It simply means that we have to make a new decision. How are we going to live our lives?
By Janet Van deWalle
By asking ourselves the “what feels better?” question, many of us will discover that we have been doing things simply because we have always done them that way. “We are often so caught up in our destination that we forget to appreciate the journey, especially the goodness of the people we meet along the way. Appreciation is a wonderful feeling, don’t overlook it.” —Unknown This is the next step—appreciating the journey. There are moments when we come into contact with friends, family, coworkers. By making a conscious decision to totally put our focus on them and appreciate them, time will, in essence, seem to slow down.
“Try as much as possible to be wholly alive, with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell, and when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough.” —William Saroyan
“Look for things that you appreciate where you are. It will put you in a place of perfect allowing, even when you are not yet manifesting all that you want.” —Abraham/Hicks
The first step can be as simple as taking a look at how we are spending our time. Let’s remember, the purpose of life is to seek our joy. What are we doing that is not bringing us joy? We have to ask ourselves: Does it feel better to take on that new project at the office, or does it feel better to delegate it? Does it feel better to clean my own house, or does it feel better to finally hire that cleaning service?
The last step? Take your list of “things to do today” and identify the items that you know you will get accomplished today. The other things on your list? Turn them over to the Universe to handle! If we simply recognize that creating our own reality doesn’t mean that we have to do it all by ourselves, that the Universe is there to deliver to us what it is that we want, we can then finally begin to live in the now. Is it Autism, Illness, or Natural Delay? Don’t Be Afraid to Have Your Child Checked Several times in the last few weeks, the subject of autism has come up. After a friend’s brother died, I asked about the delegation of donations to autism research. Deb said her brother had always had problems in school, with social relationships, and even keeping a job. As an adult, he was finally diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum and was delighted to finally find out what had caused his problems growing up. A week later, the obituary of another friend also asked that donations be made to the study of autism…his son had been diagnosed. I recently completed an interview for this magazine during which we discussed the autism spectrum, among other things. My friend Theresa and I were catching up on our families when she started telling me about the problems some of her nieces and nephews have had. She had recently read about autism and thought that might partially explain the kids’ difficulties. Theresa commented that she doesn’t remember classmates or any of her brothers and sisters being diagnosed with all these troubles and problems. We talked about the more common symptoms of autism, such as delayed speech development, repetitive language or mannerisms, few friends, avoidance or lack of spontaneity or makebelieve, and fixation on objects or tasks. She said her son didn’t talk for a long time and preferred being alone to playing with friends. She wondered if he should have been tested for autism or some related disorder. My grandson Michael was overly focused (which, I think, is only slightly preferable to having an attention deficit) in kindergarten
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
and preferred working by himself to group activities. He was eventually diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, which is a disability on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum. It’s difficult for parents…no, for all of us…to know whether unusual behaviors indicate a disability or are part of growing up. As I mentioned, Deb’s brother was happy to finally have a name for his difficulties. Today, Michael pretty much “goes with the flow” until he gets frustrated with what he considers ineptitude. This is part of his difficulty in relating to other people (we continue working on those social skills). Theresa’s son is functioning well as an adult, but she still worries. If you are concerned about your child’s development, talk to your child’s physician. Be proactive. Educate yourself. Go online and research autism and its related disabilities. Look up learning disabilities. Talk to professionals. (I do offer this caveat: Beware of false diagnoses…even doctors are wrong sometimes.) When it comes to our kids, they’re never too young or too old to get help. Remember, kids are people, too. We all have times when our interest in what is going on lags, whether we’re in a meeting, watching a performance, having a conversation, or writing an artic—ooh, a bird just flew by the window! Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Lincoln Hypnosis Center Unlock the Potential Within By Annie Kontor
What is stopping you from living your best life? Is it those last few pounds you want to lose? Is it the stress in your everyday life? Are you stuck behind obstacles that keep you from advancing in your career? We all struggle with things that prevent us from reaching our peak performance. Overcoming these challenges can seem like a daunting task. Jeff and Devan Martin of the Lincoln Hypnosis Center take a different view: They see setbacks as building blocks to success. This husband-and-wife team has made it their mission to help their clients realize their true potential in any facet of their lives through the power of hypnosis. Wait a minute, you might be thinking. Hypnosis? You mean keeping your eyes on a gold pocket watch dangled by a person wearing a cape? Nothing could be further from the truth. Founded in 2008 by Jeff and Devan, the Lincoln Hypnosis Center has helped hundreds of clients quit smoking, lose weight, become better athletes, and realize their personal and professional goals. How does it work? Hypnosis is the art and science of suggestion. It helps people overcome old negative habits, allowing them to let go of the unwanted things that have hurt them in the past. At its core, hypnosis helps people change their perception—how information is taken in and processed. Poor perception leads people to develop bad habits, such as overeating or smoking, to cope with life. The process at Lincoln Hypnosis Center begins with a free hypnosis consultation, in which a new client meets with Jeff or Devan to assess goals. The potential client undergoes testing so she can see what hypnosis feels like. Then Jeff and Devan devise a plan uniquely tailored to that individual. Changing her outlook transformed Gailanne Hindsley’s life. “After coming to Lincoln Hypnosis for weight loss, I have found my inner self,” she relates. “My body feels at peace—I never knew how your body feels after losing 29 pounds. Jeff has helped me all along the way.” The Martins stand by their work. Their service guarantee is the best in the business. Once a client comes in for weight loss, she continues her visits until she gets to her goal weight. If the weight comes back, she can return for reinforcement sessions. Who can benefit from hypnosis? Anybody! “We’ve helped thousands of people quit smoking, become fit, sleep better, and find new jobs,” Jeff observes. “We have enabled people to conquer their fears and have less stress. Results happen here.” No one offers what Lincoln Hypnosis Center does— an entire program based on the client’s needs. The Martins are skilled at meeting a patient exactly where she is. They are trained both in hypnotism and in the field

of neuro-linguistic programming, and they are members of the National Guild of Hypnotists. Jeff is a founding member of the Master Hypnotist Society, and Devan Devan and Jeff Martin has extensive training as a personal and executive coach. The Lincoln Hypnosis Center has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and is a member of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce. To serve additional clients, they have also opened a second location in Omaha. The Martins can also help clients improve their work performance. Medical providers and educators are excellent candidates for hypnosis. Because of their stressful work environments, it is critical that they remain calm and relaxed. Hypnosis helps these professionals deal with the pressures of their jobs so that they can leave the stress at the office and relax more at home. “When I met Devan, I had become stressed out beyond control, both at home and at work,” says Cassie Taylor, the owner of Black Belt Movers. “Devan helped me find the true source of the issues I was having. She helped me focus on the steps to move forward. She doesn’t make excuses for our issues. She helps us resolve them so we can find the light at the end of the tunnel.” The Lincoln Hypnosis Center also works with athletes of all ages. Many players have athletic ability but need help fine-tuning their skills to step into “the zone,” where they can push beyond barriers more naturally. To be at the top of their game, athletes need mentors to help them shake it off when they are feeling down about athletic setbacks. Athletes want to excel, but they often need someone to teach them how, and Jeff is passionate about helping athletes reach their full potential. What is preventing you from fulfilling your dreams? If you’re ready to use your obstacles as building blocks to success, check out the Lincoln Hypnosis Center. Positive Perspective
An Infinity of Choices Trust Your Instincts “There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them.” —Denis Waitley Isn’t life amazing? Every day, we have choices, and what we choose to do with them is totally up to us. What is even more amazing is how one seemingly small choice can have long-term effects that we never even imagined. So, how are you doing with your choices? “Your life is the sum result of all the choices you make, both consciously and unconsciously. If you can control the process of choosing, you can take control of all aspects of your life. You can find the freedom that comes from being in charge of yourself.” —Robert F. Bennett The great thing about life is that you can always make new choices. Recently, I have been feeling frustrated with the people around me. I was falling into the trap of choosing to allow others to steal my joy. “I discovered I always have choices and sometimes it’s only a choice of attitude.” —Unknown So, I’ve made the choice to change my attitude. I am choosing to focus on my own efforts and change what I can. I will choose the

thoughts and actions that feel best for me, because all I can really control are my choices, my thoughts, and my actions. “Remember, there are no mistakes, only lessons. Love yourself, trust your choices, and everything is possible.” —Cherie Carter-Scott I think that is one of the biggest lessons we can learn—to trust ourselves and trust our choices. It is very easy to waver and to find fault in our choices, but sometimes we just have to dive in and trust that, at that moment in time, we are making the choice; we are making the best choice for ourselves. We make choices every day, some small and some large. As you move forward in your choices, consider trying to feel your way through them. Ask yourself what feels better. Does choice A feel better than choice B, or should you look for a choice C? “You and I are essentially infinite choice-makers. In every moment of our existence, we are in that field of all possibilities where we have access to an infinity of choices.” —Deepak Chopra Remember, you always have a choice, even if that choice is to do nothing.
