Publisher’s Notes
When a Door Closes… Hello and happy 2019! This New Year has a bittersweet beginning for me. I am sorry to say that I closed my restaurant, Bricks & Mortar Bar and Bistro, at the beginning of December. The reason? Let’s just say the landlord made it impossible to carry on. The good news is that I learned so much over the past several years. I came in contact with a huge variety of people—from customers to staff—that I would never have met if I hadn’t taken this journey. I gained knowledge of an industry that I now respect more than I would ever have imagined. The employees who succeed have a true passion for taking care of their customers. One employee who deserves a very special “thank you” is Manny Chavez, who was my General Manager for four and a half of those years. I told Manny again and again that he took a sow’s ear and turned it into a silk purse. He worked hard—day and night—to make the restaurant a beautiful, smoothly functioning machine. We couldn’t have gotten where we did without him. Thank you, Manny! One of the best things about leaving the bar is that I am returning to Women’s Edition full time. I’ve missed her! My staff has been keeping things running. Tiffanie Gregory, my Customer Service Coordinator, has been running the ship and doing a great job. Erin Lanza, my Art and Editorial Director, has been there through it all. (She has even jumped in and started going out to share our story with potential advertisers!) Liz Huett, our Copy Editor, has put up with me missing my own deadlines. Thank you! I absolutely couldn’t have done it without you. I’d like to welcome Liz Boettner, our new Account Executive, to Women’s Edition! She is excited to start meeting business owners here in Lincoln and help them grow. Welcome aboard, Liz! I know that 2019 is going to be a spectacular year. I am so very excited at the prospect of getting out once again and talking to our customers. I’m also contemplating different ways that I can connect with you, our readers! More to come on that as time goes on. I sincerely hope that you all have a great year ahead of you, as well. One of the great lessons that I learned at my restaurant was about the importance of time. With the New Year ahead, I have made a commitment to make every moment count. Here I go! Want to join me? We’ll talk next month.

Bridal Fashion, Then and Now Love is Always in Style
By Holly Bell
Planning a wedding used to be quite a traditional process. There were rules you had to follow and criteria you had to meet. There was plenty of room for beauty, but not a lot of room for creativity. Over the years, weddings have changed a great deal. Gone are the days when you followed all the same rules that your mother did. Today, you have the freedom to let your wedding reflect your personality. In many cases, an old tradition is still at work, but it’s being celebrated in a different way. In the past, many brides changed into a suit and left on a wedding trip directly after the wedding. Many of today’s brides change into a party dress for the reception. This gives them the opportunity to be more comfortable on the dance floor and to make another fashion statement. Today’s weddings are usually centered around a favorite theme or the tastes of the bride and groom. For example, if your tastes run to modern simplicity, your gown could be a satin sheath with little or no embellishment. Your hair could be a low bun in the back, accessorized with simple pearl earrings. Table decorations and invitations could also reflect your refined tastes. Other couples may have entirely different tastes. One couple I know is doing an outdoorsy country theme. Their engagement photos showed them in a rural setting, wearing plaid shirts. The wedding will be held outside, near a garden, and decorations will have a country vibe. The bride may wear cowboy boots! It is their day to get creative. Bridal fashions this season give lots of opportunity for letting your imagination and creativity run wild. Dresses in seasons past often featured strapless mermaid styles. This style looks amazing in photos but isn’t the most comfortable in practice—brides typically had to wear a corset-type undergarment that (hopefully) kept the top up, and they still had to be conscious of the top slipping down throughout the day. The latest styles have solved this problem with the newest bridal design trend: straps! These provide not only security and comfort but also an opportunity for additional details. Straps come in all sizes and styles, from spaghetti straps to wide lace straps and everything in between. If you choose a style with straps instead of a strapless style, your day will have one less worry and some added comfort. Another style trend in bridal attire, especially for a cooler weather wedding, is sleeves. Sleeves are having a big moment in fashion right now, and that includes wedding dresses. The trumpet sleeve has been a great trend these past seasons and is gorgeous on a wedding dress. Off-the-shoulder gowns also look stunning with flowing sleeves. Lace sleeves provide a very feminine touch. This year’s bridal sleeves are often quite long, landing in the middle of the hand, which adds an elegance to the dress. When you think of a wedding dress, you automatically think of white—but did you know there are over 200

shades of white? If you want a white wedding dress, you still have a lot of options to choose from. The bridal shows this year were also filled with the color blush. Brides will be pretty in pink this year! Another favorite this season is nude undertones. Lace with nude-colored lining or nude-colored layers under white offer a fresh look. Wedding decor is also enjoying some fun trends. For example, adding metallic touches brings a bit of sparkle to everything. There’s a rose gold frenzy going on, and it looks great with this year’s pink tones. When it comes to flowers and dessert, less is more this year. Gone are the tall,

structured floral arrangements that prohibited dinner conversation—small but lush floral arrangements are the trend. Brides are also putting less emphasis on the wedding cake. Smaller or even pre-cut cakes are in, along with offering more varied dessert options like gourmet donuts or pies. One current trend that may not come to mind for weddings is black. Many dresses this year have a black ribbon accent around the waist. Brides are also opting for some drama and sophistication by adding black into their event design. Black charger plates would add some glamour to the table and go perfectly with the metallic touches that are so on trend. Though wedding and reception traditions have changed, one thing that all brides have had in common across the ages is the desire to look beautiful and memorable. This is probably the biggest party you’ll ever throw, and you want it to be the best. When you’re planning your wedding, feel free to celebrate the traditions you value while staying true to your personal style. Who knows? Maybe you’ll create something new that will become its own tradition! WE More information at www.lisaloucollection.com

Good Fortune & Good Food in the New Year By Kate Beiting
Open House Italian Beef Sandwiches Trim a 3-4–pound boneless rump or chuck roast, cut into 3-inch chunks, and sear briefly, if desired. Place the meat into a slow cooker. Mix together 1/2 cup of water and one envelope of Italian salad dressing mix. Pour over the beef. Add 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper, several slices of garlic, and half a jar of sliced pepperoncini. Cook on low for 6–8 hours. Remove meat and shred. Return to slow cooker until ready to serve. Serve on rolls with juices on the side. Baked Pancakes Put a stick of butter in a cast iron skillet. Place the skillet in a 475-degree oven for 3–4 minutes until the butter melts. While the butter is melting, mix together 2 eggs, 1/2 cup of milk, and 1/2 cup of flour. Once the butter has melted, pour the batter into the skillet. Bake for 12–15 minutes, until brown and fluffy. Remove from the oven, fill with cooked fruits or jams, and roll up like a loose jelly roll. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Slice and serve with cooked sausages and mimosas. Bacon and Date Appetizers Cut one pound of bacon slices in half. Wrap each piece around a whole pitted date. Sprinkle with brown sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes (or broil for 10 minutes), until bacon is crispy. Mushroom Canapés Unroll 2 packages of refrigerated crescent dinner rolls and press the perforations together to make a rectangle. Mix one 8-ounce package of softened cream cheese with one 4-ounce can of drained mushroom pieces, 2 chopped green onions, and 1 teaspoon of seasoned salt. Spread the mixture over the dough. Roll it up like a jelly roll and slice into 1-inch pieces. Brush the pieces with egg wash. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. Add other spices, as desired. Cook for 4–5 hours on low in a slow cooker or for 2 hours on low on the stove. Serve with crusty garlic toast or cornbread. Dawn’s Mud Bars Line a 9-inch square pan with greased foil. In a large bowl,
beat 1 stick of soft butter with 3/4 cup of packed brown sugar until creamy. Beat in 1 egg and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. In a smaller bowl, mix 1 cup plus 2 Tablespoons of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture. Stir in 2/3 cup of semisweet chocolate chips, 2/3 cup of white chocolate chips, and 1/2 cup of chopped pecans. Spread dough into the prepared pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 23–25 minutes, until center is firm. Sprinkle 1/3 cup of semisweet chips and 1/3 cup of white chocolate chips on top. When the chips are soft, spread evenly. Cool, then cut into bars or triangles. Pumpkin Cheesecake Mix together 1/2 cup of crushed graham crackers, 1/4 cup of crushed gingersnaps, 2 Tablespoons of finely chopped pecans, 1 Tablespoon of flour, 1 Tablespoon of powdered sugar, and 2 Tablespoons of melted butter. Lightly grease the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan. Spread and pat the crumb mixture over the bottom. In a large mixing bowl, mix two 8-ounce packages of softened cream cheese with 1 cup of sugar, until fluffy. Add 3 eggs, beating well. Put 1 cup of the cream cheese mixture into another bowl and add 1 egg, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 1 can of pumpkin (15 ounces), 1/4 cup of milk, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger, and 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg. Beat until combined. Pour the pumpkin mixture into the springform pan and top with the plain cream cheese mixture. With a knife, gently swirl through the layers to create a marble effect. Bake at 350 degrees for 40–50 minutes, until the center appears set. Cool on rack for 1 hour before loosening the pan. Refrigerate. Garnish with whipped cream and spiced nuts. WE

Cactus Modern Mexican & Cantina A New Twist on Mexican Flavors
By Janet L. Schmidt
If you love Mexican food, you’re in luck. There’s a new restaurant in the Edgewood Shopping Mall called Cactus Modern Mexican & Cantina. This establishment is a family-oriented restaurant that combines the flavors of traditional Mexican cuisine with modern ideas and fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Whether you want a family dinner, a drink at the cantina, or seats on the patio, Cactus has got you covered. This restaurant is completely new, from the ground up. You can’t miss it from the outside—just look for the tall, metal cactus sculpture. The interior decor at Cactus is a mix of modern and traditional, just like the food. To the right of the front patron receiving area, a large wall rises almost to the ceiling. Patrons who venture behind the wall will discover an entrance to the cantina. This separation creates an intimate ambience in the cantina because patrons who are having cocktails are secluded from the activity in the front area. It also provides space to hang several wooden painted masks that lend a Mayan flair to the restaurant. Cactus is part of the local Pillar Restaurant Group, which consists of five main eating establishment concepts: Goodcents Deli Fresh Subs, Venue Restaurant & Lounge, Piedmont Bistro, Cactus Modern Mexican & Cantina, and Venue Catering & Events. Craig Zimmerman is the marketing director for the Pillar Restaurant Group. Craig has always enjoyed interacting with people in the restaurant setting. He began his career in the industry by working as a server for the Venue Restaurant in Lincoln while attending the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) to earn a bachelor’s degree in advertising and public relations. His responsibilities at Pillar Restaurant Group now encompass marketing activities such as radio and television ads, creating and updating promotional brochures and flyers, handling social media content and monitoring traffic, planning events, updating and maintaining the restaurant website, and creating marketing campaign strategies. He supervises three interns from UNL, who assist with marketing projects and responsibilities. As anyone in the restaurant business can tell you, running a great restaurant is not easy. In addition to the food itself, Craig notes, the experience that patrons have at a restaurant starts the moment they walk in the door. Restaurant leadership needs to find and maintain consistency in how each patron is greeted, seated, and served. At Cactus, the staff works as a team. Management creates a feeling of camaraderie by promoting employees from within, hosting an annual employee holiday party, and providing food discounts and other perks for employees. This type of attention to morale helps
12
create the motivation for consistency in each team member. When it comes to customer service, to work in general, and even to life, Craig values keeping a good attitude and maintaining optimism. As the restaurant is successful, Craig notes, they share that success with their community by giving back. Like many restaurants, they receive many requests for donations, and they make a habit of saying “yes” to these requests. Last year, they donated $200,000 to the community in the form of cash, food, gift cards, specialty dinners, and charitable donation drives. Their menu looks delicious! You can choose from house-made chips and dips, a wide range of salads, and many traditional Mexican dishes, all made with authentically crafted meats. For a different twist on Mexican food, try one of their Mexican-inspired burgers. Their children’s menu offers popular favorites like quesadillas, chicken tenders, nachos, and cheeseburgers. The dessert menu includes items like house-made churros and the very popular sopapilla sundae. Patron Shelly L. loves the food at Cactus. “Great food, fresh and flavorful,” she notes. “Unique margaritas and cool atmosphere.” Deanne L. remarks, “The food and service were excellent. The price was surprising, considering how good the food was. I highly recommend this place!” In the cantina, the staff can make any of the dozen specialty drinks on their menu plus just about any cocktail you desire. “Great drinks with smart spins on your favorite classics,” says patron Patti K., “plus some new favorites and fantastic bartenders!” If you enjoy Mexican cuisine but want to try something a little different from the traditional Mexican restaurant, check out Cactus Modern Mexican & Cantina. Cactus serves lunch and dinner seven days a week, and they have brunch from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays. The cantina is open from 11 to 11 every day, and they’re open late (to 1 a.m.) on Fridays and Saturdays. They’re located at 5500 South 56th Street, Suite 1, in the Edgewood Shopping Mall. A Woman’s Work
Would the Real Queen Please Stand Up? Keeping that Crown Polished
By Sharon Knierim
It should be one of my resolutions for the New Year to attempt to be a better long-term hostess to other women. You know who I’m talking about. From time to time, your mother or mother-in-law, sister or aunt, or even a good friend comes to stay for an indefinite period of time. There are at least two problems here. The idea of someone “coming to stay” throws me into a panic. When I think of “come,” I can’t help but think of “go,” as in “go away after a suitable length of time.” Also, “an indefinite period of time” strikes fear in my old and worn-out heart. This literally undefined amount of time could mean anything from a week to a couple of years. It’s indefinite! Hopefully, I am not a stingy or thoughtless person known for the peculiarity of jealously guarding my privacy. After all, the doorbell continues to ring on a regular basis, as does the telephone. Realistically, we don’t get that many requests to share our home, whether it’s from someone who wants to visit and catch up or someone who needs a place to stay because of a job loss that led to a home loss. It’s unhospitable to be freaky about wanting guests to make

reservations to come through my front door. It’s even less hospitable to announce early during the “negotiations” when they will arrive and, more importantly, when I’ll be standing on the front porch, waving good-bye to them. Perhaps I harbor these feelings because I love a simple and quiet life that features doing what I want to do, when I want to do it. Well, we all love that. Like everyone else, I treasure the fellowship of my family and dear friends on a regular basis, but they all seem to have an instinct that their visit will soon be ending. Hopefully, I don’t begin to yawn or thumb through a magazine when company is still here. Something must show, though, because somehow my

lady friends and relatives always know it’s time to pick up their purses and begin looking for their coats. Long-term guests are expected to hold their own at our house. Doing their own laundry is an absolute requirement, helping with the dishes is an obligation, and leaving personal items on the floor or tables is nearly a death sentence. Don’t worry; there’s still hope. As an unlicensed and untrained mental health official, I have found the source of my problem: I am shy. It is true that I never make the first move to make a new friend and am somewhat uncomfortable when friends are too close. Displays of emotion and drama are taboo in my surroundings, which is sad—these moments of emotion can be pretty interesting. On the surface, this sounds truly cold-hearted. According to my amateur diagnosis, however, I might just have a fear of being drawn into problems I do not understand. Probably it’s best to leave this kind of work to the professionals. Over the years, the family and I have somehow declared me Queen of the House. Apparently, I have learned to love the job. That is why I feel threatened when another woman arrives with her luggage (and her not-yet-housetrained puppy) in tow. There can be only one queen in a castle, and I enjoying filling that position. If the new arrival poses no threat and is entertaining, helpful, and interesting, or if we share a long history together, the event can be quite fun. Perhaps learning to “loosen up” would make a big difference. I recently read an article that said not everything has to be perfect in your home before you can welcome houseguests. That seems counterintuitive to me, but it’s something to think about. So it is that, in the year 2019, I will attempt to be kinder to my guests and better enjoy the gift of their friendship. I will give more of myself. I will not be wearing my crown when I open the door for them—I will take out my crown only in my bedroom, at night, when I’m polishing it. Seriously, why deny ourselves the opportunity to learn more about the people who populate our lives and make our lives what they are? It only takes a little bit of caring to start some good feelings. I will be a better hostess in 2019. While I am at it, I think I’ll monitor my own behavior when I am a guest (not the queen) in someone else’s home. Who knows what rules I may be breaking over there? Spotlight on Lighting Design Trends in Style and Functionality
By Robyn V. Powell
Lighting is one of the most important elements of interior design. It can change the perceived size of a room, add functionality, and even alter your mood! When integrated with other design elements such as fabric, furnishings, paint, and wallpaper, lighting is the masterstroke that brings a space to life. If lighting is overlooked in the design process, even an architecturally beautiful space with stunning design elements can fall flat. Because lighting design is both a science and an art, selecting the right type and proper placement of lighting is challenging. That said, planning lighting for your home doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. Familiarize yourself with lighting fundamentals and take your space from nice to extraordinary! To strike the right balance of visual appeal and functionality, a well-lit space combines a variety of lights. Lighting generally consists of three categories: ambient, accent, and task. A good lighting plan consolidates all three into a space. One way to think about lighting is in terms of layering, in much the same way you build an outfit. Ambient lighting is your foundation and includes recessed ceiling or flush-mounted fixtures that blanket a space with a layer of even light. Once you’ve chosen your base layer, you’re ready to add accent lighting to achieve ambience. Accent lighting is like jewelry. It adds drama and beauty by adding visual detail. Depending on the room, your choice of accent light will differ. For example, you

can create an inviting nook in a family room with a table or floor lamp. Bring a fun, playful atmosphere to a child’s bedroom with colorful lampshades or bulbs. Add drama and beauty to your dining room with a chandelier or sconces. Your final layer is task lighting. Just like a pair of hard-working shoes, task lighting is functional and has a specific purpose, like a desk lamp or a closet light. Today’s multi-function kitchens typically have a combination of all three types of lighting—recessed lighting overhead, pendants above the island, and under-cabinet task lighting. When it comes to the latest lighting trends, bigger is better! Homeowners everywhere are falling in love with oversized fixtures. Large pendants and bold chandeliers that act as statement pieces are getting lots of attention. Soft gold is trending as a popular finish, beautifully complementing the current design palettes ›››

of greige and soft gray. Soft gold blends well with contemporary, farmhouse, and modern urban decor. Layering light with different sizes of table and floor lamps, all with soft fabric shades that diffuse light, is a popular choice for mood-enhancing accent lighting. Whether a light fixture is the focal point or an accent detail, a dimmer switch is a great feature. Dimmer switches allow you to lower lighting to create different moods, with the added benefit of reducing energy use and costs. Smart lighting also offers more precise control over lighting, and it’s one of the most desirable features of a smart home. Smart lighting allows you to save energy, helping both your wallet and the environment. Options include touch panels and screens, remote control, motion sensors that detect movement in and out of a room, and systems that can be controlled directly from your smartphone or tablet. For example, the Alexa app allows you to set up single verbal command groups that control multiple lights and plugs. With the ease of a single command, you can set the mood for your entire house, whether you’re arriving home, getting set to watch a movie, or switching everything off at bedtime. LED lights have come a long way, with an impressive life span of 20 years. Though more expensive to purchase up front, LEDs are very cost-effective over time. Initially, many consumers didn’t like the cooler, bluish light that LEDs emit compared to the familiar warmth of incandescent lights. This issue has been resolved by the new generation of warm white LED lights between 2700–3500K (the lower the number, the warmer the color). Lighting stores are well versed in LED technology and can provide a great resource to guide you in choosing the right LED lighting for your needs. The shorter days make winter the ideal time to update your home’s lighting. Consider working with a lighting professional or interior designer who has the expertise to help you design just the right lighting for your home. The added value they bring can make or break the success of your project. Compare portfolios and choose someone who suits your personal style and listens carefully to what you’ll need from your lighting at different times of the day and night. Whether you’re building or renovating, the best lighting design is the one that works best in your home! Sources for this article included: consumerreports.com, greenamerica.org, and asid.org. WE

Fitness Can Be Fun Get Fit and Fab in 2019
By Loretta McCollum
Hello, January! Every year, we anticipate your arrival. You bring us fresh starts, second chances, and new opportunities to reinvent and redeem ourselves. Conversely, you have the ability to underscore the adverse results of recent over-indulgences and painfully remind us of last January’s failed resolve to get it together and achieve our fitness goals. Take heart, my post-holiday food coma friends. Fitness has never been more fun! So sit back, relax, put on some pants with an elastic waist, and pay attention. We’re going to talk about the benefits of being physically fit, along with some of the fun options available to help you reach your goals. Keeping in shape is important at any age. Being fit improves overall health and decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer, among other things. Those who exercise regularly have more energy, sleep better, and are less likely to suffer from depression. In older adults, exercise helps lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, and maintain bone health. Where do you start? With so many choices, there’s a workout plan for everyone. From Pilates to plyometrics, from boxing to ballet barre, you’re sure to find something you’ll enjoy. Besides, you can always mix things up a little bit. It’s best to avoid sticking with one form of exercise for an extended period of time, and not just because you might get bored and lose motivation. After continued repetition, your body develops muscle memory, decreasing the effectiveness of your fitness routine.

Rowing, cycling, and kickboxing are tried-and-true, high-intensity workout methods. Rowing is a great full-body workout that uses approximately 85 percent of the body’s muscles. It also has the benefit of being both high intensity and low impact. Cycling is a great cardiovascular workout that burns fat and builds muscle. Cycling classes typically include upbeat music to get you going. Kickboxing combines boxing with karate moves and is a good cross-training workout. Rowing and cycling are both forms of resistance training, meaning that muscles contract against an external source of resistance. Other examples include free weights, medicine balls, and weight machines. Resistance training provides multiple benefits, including increased strength and flexibility as well as maintenance of bone mass and bone density. It also helps lower blood pressure and body fat percentage. Looking for something more calming and meditative? Pilates
www.womensedition.com
or yoga may be the answer. Yoga has been around for centuries and is practiced in many forms. It’s known for increasing strength and decreasing stress. Hatha yoga includes most types of yoga that combine breath work and various poses. Bikram yoga (also known as “hot yoga”) is practiced in a warm, humid space. Yin is a restorative type of yoga, focusing on increasing flexibility and circulation by holding poses for longer periods of time. Ashtanga is a more physically demanding type of yoga in which poses are done in a certain order, producing a purifying sweat to rid the body of toxins. Pilates is somewhat similar to yoga, but where yoga focuses on flexibility, Pilates emphasizes muscle relaxation and core strength. Check with a local gym or studio for more information on all forms of yoga and Pilates. Group classes are a fun way to get in shape. Feel like de-stressing by hitting something? Join a pound class and get your cardio and plyometric workout using lightly weighted drumsticks called Ripstix. Want a little friendly competition? Team-based workouts help you get in shape using camaraderie and a sense of accomplishment. Jazz it up with a groove class, a dance workout with music and simple moves. Want to make some waves? Ropes classes involve creating wave-like patterns with ropes. These great low-impact cardio workouts use most of the major muscle groups. How about something more sensual? Pole workouts increase flexibility and tone, while building strength. Barre training uses a ballet barre, and it’s a mix of Pilates, dance, and yoga that incorporates aerobics and cardio training, usually choreographed to music. Now that you’ve decided to get fit and fab, where should you go? Selecting a gym is a personal decision. Like fitness regimens, there’s something for everyone. Some fitness centers offer kids’ clubs, massages, saunas and whirlpools, juice bars, and nutrition consultants. Some focus on offering a variety of equipment and the ability to work out in multiple locations, while others strive to be non-intimidating. Most fitness centers offer the expertise of a personal trainer, typically for an extra fee. A personal trainer has gone through fitness certification training and can provide fitness assessments, develop personalized fitness and nutrition plans, and work closely with you to help you achieve your fitness goals. What are you waiting for? It’s January! Get off the couch, and get to the gym! Sources for this article included: wellbridge. com, ncsf.org, pennyhoarder.com, webmd.com, and lifespan.org. WE

Franklin’s Treasures and Treats A 21st-Century Five-and-Dime
By Kit Boesch
When you step into Franklin’s Treasures and Treats in Lincoln, it feels like you’re stepping back in time. From wooden puzzles and scrapbooking supplies to home decor and popcorn, you will find it at Franklin’s. It will probably remind you more than a little bit of the old Ben Franklin stores, and for good reason. Ben Franklin was a chain of five-and-dime stores, founded in 1927 and open in small towns throughout the United States. The business was organized using a franchise system, with individual stores owned by independent proprietors. The franchise was very successful for decades, but, even with its many locations, it couldn’t hold out against the big box stores. Ben Franklin stores were shuttering nationwide, and that was as true in Lincoln as anywhere else. Carol Schoenleber and her daughter, Kelsey, worked at the Meadowlane Ben Franklin on 70th and Vine when, in April 2016, the difficult decision was made to close the store. It was a sad day—after all, Carol’s parents, Ralph and Wilma Gerbeling, had opened Lincoln’s first Ben Franklin store in University

Fresh Concept
A New You, From the Neck Up Cosmetic Surgery Considerations By Kylie Gumpert
If you’ve ever thought about getting a facial cosmetic surgery procedure, this time of year is perfect for taking the first steps toward the confidence you deserve. With every New Year, we reflect on what we want from our lives. We make resolutions and promises to ourselves that involve living healthier and happier lives. For some of us, that might mean a facial cosmetic surgery that restores our confidence or corrects an abnormality. Though recovery for facial cosmetic surgeries varies somewhat based on the procedure you undergo, there are some steps you can take toward good results that apply to any facial surgery. Regular sun protection, such as sunscreen and good coverage with clothing, as well as maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a good diet, can help extend the results of your procedure. There are several different types of procedures for the neck and facial area, including brow lift or forehead lift, rhinoplasty, face lift, ear pinning or reduction, neck lift, and neck fat reduction. The brow lift, or forehead lift, is for someone who wants to raise the eyebrows and reduce wrinkle lines on the forehead and between the eyes. In some cases, the surgeon will make an ear-to-ear incision within the hair. In other cases, it’s best to do several small incisions along the hairline around the top of the patient’s face. For these incisions, the surgeon will use an endoscope, which is a small tube with a camera on the end. The endoscope is inserted under the skin to examine the parts of the underlying muscle that are causing deep wrinkles or sagging of the patient’s forehead and brows. These tissues can then be surgically removed. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, most patients can expect to resume regular activities, including going back to work, within about two weeks. It will take several months for all swelling to go down and for the area to heal completely. Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, is for people looking to enhance the balance of the face by altering the shape, size, or positioning of the nose, or to correct deformities that cause breathing issues. This surgery involves a surgeon making incisions either within the nose or along the tissue that separates the nostrils. There may also be incisions along the natural curve of the nostrils to adjust their size or position. Depending on what the patient desires, the surgeon might shave down bone or remove cartilage. Cartilage from other parts of the body may be needed to reconstruct parts of the nose. In the first few days after surgery, a splint or gauze will be used to help support the new structure of the nose. Full healing will occur in around a year. The initial, noticeable swelling will diminish in the first few weeks, but swelling is likely to occur most mornings throughout that year. A full face lift is for someone who is looking to lift
26
and tighten loose skin around the face and chin and to smooth folds along the side of the nose and mouth. During this procedure, the surgeon will make an incision on the hairline that starts at the temples and runs around the bottom of the ear and along the lower scalp. The surgeon will redistribute fat and adjust underlying facial tissue or muscle to achieve the desired look. Excess skin is then trimmed, and the incision line is sutured. Many times, a full face lift will include a neck lift, an eyebrow or forehead lift, and an eyelid lift. Patients generally resume work and activities after a couple of weeks. Uncomfortable tightness will go away after two or three months. A neck lift is for someone looking to tighten and smooth sagging skin or muscle and excess fat in the lower face and under the chin. This procedure is similar to a face lift procedure, but the incision starts along the hairline of a patient’s sideburns. Additionally, surgeons will often make an incision under the patient’s chin and then use liposuction to remove excess fat. Following surgery, it’s important to avoid turning or twisting the head at first. Patients should also avoid wearing clothing that pulls over the head. Full healing will take around six months. Neck fat reduction is for patients younger than 55 years who want to minimize a double chin. A surgeon will make a couple of small incisions under the chin or behind the ears and insert the liposuction cannula to collect and remove fatty tissue. After surgery, patients briefly need to wear a chin strap that helps support the neck and maintain its shape, but most patients are ready to resume everyday activities after just two weeks. Ear surgery, sometimes called “ear pinning,” is for someone who wants to correct abnormally large ears or ears that protrude significantly. During the procedure, an incision is usually made on the upper back of the ear. If necessary, the incision may be made in the inner folds of the ear. The surgeon uses permanent sutures to hold
www.womensedition.com
the ear in its new position. The procedure may also remove excess tissue in the inner ear, which commonly develops in patients who have protruding ears. Children as young as five years can undergo this surgery, so long as they are healthy, are able to follow directions for aftercare, and do not communicate that they don’t want to go through with surgery. Visually, the ears will look corrected almost immediately, but full healing will take around a year. It is very important to be careful about bumping the ears or subjecting them to sunlight—children must be made to understand the importance of this. Bandages must be left on to maintain the ear’s new shape; the surgeon will decide when bandages should be removed. The most important parts of deciding whether facial surgery is right for you are researching the procedures beforehand and finding a surgeon you can trust who has the experience you need. There are some important questions you should always ask a potential surgeon before electing for a surgery. Regarding the surgery, you’ll need to know whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure you desire, what the risks are, how long your recovery is likely to take, what type of results you can expect, and how surgical complications are handled. You also need to make sure your surgeon has relevant experience with the surgery you are undergoing and the track record to prove it, including before and after photos and patient testimonials. Like artists, surgeons have their own styles. Even with appropriate experience, a particular surgeon may not be a good fit for you if the surgeon’s vision just doesn’t match yours. Any licensed physician can legally perform cosmetic procedures, but you want to choose a qualified, board-certified surgeon to perform a surgical procedure. You should also ask if the surgeon’s
office or facility is accredited, which is important for your overall health during surgery. Look for certification from these bodies: American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF), Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), or the Joint Commission (JCAHO). Psychologically, cosmetic surgery can help increase confidence and self-esteem for patients who have dealt with years of feeling uncomfortable in their own skin. However, unhealthy or unrealistic motivations for surgery might create the opposite effect. Surgeons are trained to screen patients and help them understand what they can and should expect. Less invasive methods like filler injections, laser or light therapy, or topical creams can garner subtle cosmetic results. They are often tempting because they’re much less expensive than surgery, and they may be the right choice for some patients. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that some features cannot be altered without a surgical procedure. Being completely honest with your surgeon is the key to managing expectations and is more likely to lead to good results. When it comes to insurance, elective cosmetic surgeries are generally not covered. Surgeries that come with physical health benefits, however, may be covered. This could include things like lifting eyelids that are sagging into the field of vision or correcting nasal malformation that impairs breathing. Be sure to check with your insurance provider. If you’ve been considering cosmetic surgery options but haven’t moved forward, take advantage of the new energy that comes with the New Year. Start your research and set up some consultations with surgeons in your area today! Healthy Living
Women’s Clinic of Lincoln, PC New Treatments and Services By Sarah Brown
In 1973, lots of things were very different. The average cost of a new house was only $32,000. A gallon of gas was just 40 cents at the pump. Most clinical trials did not consider women as a separate category—if women were included in the studies at all. Much has changed since then, especially for Lincoln women who were looking for more choices and expertise when it came to their health care. Dr. Stephen Swanson and Dr. James Maly, along with the skilled nurse practitioners at Women’s Clinic of Lincoln, PC, have been providing the latest in quality and compassionate care since 1973, and their clinic continues to evolve to serve patients now and well into the future. According to nurse practitioner Andrea Davis, the clinic stands out in the community because all of the ancillary services, like mammograms, lab work, bone density testing, infertility, clinical research, body composition evaluations, and laser rejuvenation or aesthetics, are available on site. Having so many services on site saves time for both patients and practitioners and increases the quality of care. Because practitioners have the information they need so quickly, they can swiftly move forward with addressing concerns and creating a customized plan of care. “Not only do we have our physicians here,” Andrea continues, “but we have a large staff of female nurse practitioners. Patients can usually get an appointment with someone when they need it instead of having to wait.” Recently, the clinic has transitioned away from obstetric services and focused more on women themselves. One of the new technologies they offer is the FemTouch laser procedure. The declining hormones of menopause can bring undesirable vaginal symptoms, including dryness, irritation, or even pain. Some women are able to treat these symptoms with topical estrogen. For women whose topical treatment is not successful, or for women such as breast cancer survivors who cannot use hormone creams, vaginal rejuvenation with the FemTouch laser can bring symptom relief. The procedure is a good choice because it is not painful and because patients are able to return to work and most regular activity immediately after treatment. At Women’s Clinic of Lincoln, you can also obtain a body composition evaluation, which they highly recommend for patients who want to improve their body image and clinical health. “If you’ve made changes to your diet and exercise habits,” Andrea explains, “the scale isn’t always the best indication of how well you’re doing. Body composition evaluations provide information to patients about their muscle-to-fat ratio—something that can positively change, even when it seems like the numbers on the scale are not.”
28
One treatment they offer to help control body fat is CoolSculpting. This body contouring procedure reduces stored fat by freezing it (the dead cells are then eliminated naturally through the body’s lymphatic system). In addition to CoolSculpting, patients can now make appointments at the clinic for laser facial procedures, skin tightening, and tattoo removal. “We want our clients to feel good, inside and out,” Andrea says. Andrea and the rest of the staff know that they can’t help clients until they have earned their trust. Women’s Clinic of Lincoln has been a trusted source for women’s health care in the Lincoln area for almost 50 years. “I have been going here for 20-ish years,” says patient Karen, “and I have had great care in every part of this practice: well woman care, pregnancy, imaging, infertility, surgery, and grief counseling after pregnancy loss.” The trust of long-term patients like Karen is a source of pride for staff members, but it’s also a vital part of good patient care. Andrea notes that women’s health issues, like painful intercourse or abnormal bleeding, are very personal and aren’t always easy for patients to bring up and talk about, even with their doctors. Her approach to instilling trust is to let the patient know she’s listening and that she really does care. “If I’m sensing that there is something my patient is really struggling to bring up, or I can see she’s trying to figure out how to ask about something, I will just bring it up for her,” Andrea acknowledges. “That way, patients know I’m there to listen because I just brought up the topic.” Patient Emily notes that she always feels like she’s being heard. “I’ve never felt rushed at an appointment,” she says. “They’re always willing to answer questions and take their time with me. When I have questions between appointments, their online portal is quick and easy.” Women’s Clinic of Lincoln, PC, is located at 220 Lyncrest Drive, in Lincoln. Something to Fall in Love With Manifest Your Creation Wow-once again, we have a whole new year in front of us. There is something refreshing, revitalizing, hopeful, about this time of year. All of those challenges we have been facing seem a little less daunting, a little less intimidating. It’s as if we have the chance to be reborn!
By Janet Van deWalle
“Forget the resolutions, Forget control and discipline… too much work. Instead, try experimenting. Go in search of something to fall in love with…something about yourself, your career, your spouse.” —Dale Dauten
“Effective people are not problem-minded; they’re opportunity-minded. They feed opportunities and starve problems.” —Stephen Covey
I choose to deliberately focus on, deliberately create, makes decision about what I’m going to “fall in love with” I find that my energy increases, my concentration improves, and my joy explodes! So how does a person maintain this enthusiasm? The key is to utilize your imagination and visualization abilities. Make a decision to take the time and pretend that what it is that you are seeking is already a reality. Make it a point to get to the “feeling place” of what it will be like when you have manifested your creation. After reaching this place, get out of bed and begin each day with this affirmation:
Traditionally, the New Year brings with it resolutions. When I was growing up, I was taught that at the New Year, I needed to take a look at where I was and decide what I wanted to get rid of. I would attempt to make those changes through sheer willpower. Well, like most of you, my willpower would last 30 to 45 daystops! It was frustrating. After years of going through this drama, I decided to make a new decision: I no longer would make New Year’s resolutions—instead, I would take this approach:
“Today, no matter where I’m going, no matter what I am doing, and no matter who I’m doing it with—it is my dominant intent to look for that which I’m wanting to see. I’m wanting to find thoughts and words and actions that feel good while I’m finding them. For in doing so, I am, in the moment, practicing the art of allowing all that I’ve been telling the Universe I’m wanting, for all of the days of my existence.” —Abraham/Hicks
“Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” —Charles Dederich Intellectually, I know that January 1st is just another date on the calendar, yet I find myself excited by the opportunities!

Thank-You Cards Have You Sent Yours Yet? The holidays are nearly over. The decorations are being stored. Returns have been made (hopefully, there weren’t many). Now comes the hard part…thanking all the gift-givers and favordoers. The subject of thank-you notes came up at a recent wineand-gab session, and the complaints aren’t just about the holidays. Mary had company stay for several days. “I felt like I was their hotel maid,” she moaned. Mary didn’t mind so much that her guests didn’t strip the beds before they left. What she did mind was them asking if they could add some of their stuff to her laundry load. “I wish my washer and dryer had been on the fritz,” she commented wistfully. “Mable could have gone to the laundromat with me. At least we’d have had some girl time together.” Connie commented that she’d have said, “I’m not planning on doing a load right now, but I’ll show you how to work the machine.” Mary smiled and continued, “It was just the feeling that they didn’t appreciate our hospitality. There wasn’t even a ‘thank you’ when they left.” As of this conversation, which took place several weeks after the visit, Mary hadn’t received a thank-you note or even a text message remarking on what a good time they’d had. Others in the group were more concerned with kids and grandkids who hadn’t thanked them for gifts. We all agreed that we don’t give gifts to be thanked, but it would be nice to hear they’re appreciated once in a while…or at least that they’d arrived at all. I told them I’d sent my grandson a text asking if he’d received his

Christmas card…I was concerned about money sent through the mail going missing. “Yeah, Grandma, I did,” he texted back, adding, “thanks for printing your note…I could read it without Mom’s help.” One year, I gave everyone a package of blank cards to use for thank-you notes or short messages. I got a few back. One came with an apology for taking so long to write. “I didn’t have any stamps and forgot to get some when I went to the store,” she wrote. Next time, I’ll include a few stamps. Any method of thanking others is good. I know writing a thank-you note can be difficult. The elderly sometimes have arthritis in their hands and have difficulty holding a pen. My aunt took care of that disability by using her typewriter. It was an old portable she’d set up on a small table with a supply of paper and envelopes (and stamps) nearby. She even addressed the envelope on the typewriter. Others have sent emails and attached photos of them using their gift or showing what they bought with the money received. Whether it’s a short note to say “thanks,” a long narrative, a generic pre-printed card, or a phone call, acknowledgment is always appreciated. Has your family shown their thanks yet? Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Dog Training Essentials Best Practices for Pets and Owners By Brie Christensen
Bringing home a new puppy or dog is a very exciting prospect, and it’s also a big responsibility. Although it might not be at the forefront of our minds, one of the first steps into pet parenting should involve some form of basic dog training. There’s no denying that training a dog takes a lot of patience and a lot of work, but it’s not impossible, and it’s vital to the safety of your pet and your family. Some pet owners put a lot of effort into training with not much in the way of results, and they might conclude that their dog is untrainable. More often, pet owners are just making some common training mistakes. Experts from the American Kennel Club say that attitude might be the biggest error people make. Positive reinforcement is critical! In order to learn, dogs must feel comfortable and secure during training sessions. It’s also recommended to include the whole family in the dog training process. This helps children learn how to interact with their pets, and training may go quicker if the dog receives consistent interaction from the whole family at home. Some type of formal dog training is generally recommended when the pup is about six months old. Delaying training only allows for missed opportunities for the animal to learn how to behave properly. This doesn’t mean an older dog cannot be trained, though. No matter what you’ve heard about old dogs and new tricks, adult animals are perfectly capable of being trained, as long as owners remain committed to the task. When training an older dog, owners and trainers should consider any physical conditions that might limit the animal during training. It’s also critical to take a look at the dog’s training and behavior history to make sure you’re well prepared heading into training. Selecting the right trainer is vital for young and old pups alike, according to the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT). The APDT says that an interview process is the best way to become acquainted with potential dog trainers. Asking the right questions can help you decide whether you wish to move forward or look elsewhere. Ask about the trainer’s educational background in the field of dog training and what methods the trainer plans to use. Inquire about the equipment that will be used during the sessions (you may need to pay for specific collars, leashes, or treats). Always seek out references from other pet owners who have worked with the trainers you’re considering. You also need to decide if you’d rather train in a group setting or one-on-one with the trainer. If working in a group setting, your pet might be easily distracted, but dogs will eventually learn to focus—it’s important that owners do not become upset or embarrassed in these situations. If working one-on-one with a trainer, the APDT suggests working with the trainer to customize an action plan for best results. Some pet owners choose to do a mix of group and one-on-one training sessions, as both are beneficial.
34
Most training sessions begin with previously learned material to reinforce those behaviors or habits. It’s especially important to ask questions during the session and always keep in mind that training is ultimately creating a special bond between you and your pet. As a standard, most dogs are trained each week for a couple of months, but experts stress the importance of working with your dog outside of class to reinforce what you and your dog have learned. If you’re considering adopting an animal from a rescue, be prepared to retrain the animal. Even if the pet had an owner prior to being put up for adoption, the animal could have picked up some negative habits. Common behavior issues in rescue dogs include improper urination, chewing, jumping, and pulling on the leash. Fortunately, all of these habits are correctable through consistent training. Of course, dogs have individual reactions to training, but some breeds are known to be easier to train than others. Yorkshire terriers, beagles, Pomeranians, dalmatians, and bulldogs are just a few breeds that are often easy to train, according to Animal Planet. On the other hand, dogs such as Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, and German shepherds can be more difficult to train. Regardless of breed, all dogs should be trained to ensure proper behavior as they continue to grow. Everyone benefits from proper dog training—your pet and your family as well as other families and other pets! Perhaps the most important thing to remember when it comes to dog training is that results don’t happen overnight. Like any kind of training, dog training takes time, patience, commitment, and, most importantly, practice. It’s Wedding Planning Season The Best Help From the Pros By Holly Tierney-Bedord
A wedding is the ultimate celebration of love and commitment. If you’ve recently gotten engaged, congratulations! Luckily, planning a wedding can be exciting and fun, especially when you delegate the right tasks to professionals. While wedding ceremonies are definitely trending in a less formal direction, there’s no right or wrong way to do it. Focus on making your big day a reflection of you and your spouse-to-be, and the rest will fall into place. Your choice of venue is one of the most important wedding planning decisions because it sets the mood for the whole day. While having a wedding ceremony in a church is as popular as ever, other ideas include parks, beaches, backyards, dance halls, and hotels, as well as architecturally significant venues like historic mansions, libraries, and restaurants. Rustic locations like barns and stables, as well as outdoor tents and indoor-outdoor spaces, are increasingly popular. Along with the basic concerns of rental cost and availability, you need to consider several other factors when selecting a venue. You may want to find a wedding venue that also works as a reception venue (or is near your reception site) so you and your guests will have an easy time getting from one to the next. Think about how your photos will look in that location, but also consider practical matters like bathroom accessibility and parking. A very remote location may be beautiful, but it may not work well for guests and vendors who need to make deliveries. Think about food while you consider venues because some reception venues do their own catering and some do not. Venues that don’t cater may have preferred caterers to recommend, or you may be on your own to arrange for food. Some couples choose companies that are dedicated to catering events, but other couples work with a restaurant that does catering on the side. While you may not be able to finalize your menu and head count until shortly before the wedding, the sooner you handle the food planning, the better your chances of having things go smoothly. Some caterers include alcohol service, also. If not, they can likely recommend a reputable bartending service. Full-service venues will likely provide table linens, dishes, flatware, and the like. (Some caterers also provide these.) If you’re selecting these items yourself, visit your local party rental supply store. There, you can rent everything from chairs to table runners to dessert forks, and you can get some expert advice. Many of these rental shops also offer items for sale, but one advantage of renting is that you don’t have to store all those things that you may never use again. Be sure to find out whether set-up is included. Let’s talk dessert. Magnificent, structured wedding cakes are still the choice of many couples. Others are choosing less traditional desserts, like cupcake towers,
donut walls, ice cream sundae bars, or a selection of petit fours. Whatever you choose, find a local baker who specializes in the dessert you want to serve. Invitations often match the theme of the wedding. Popular trends include envelopes with beautiful paper linings, professional calligraphy, and keepsakes like coasters or photos. Invitations should be mailed about eight weeks before the wedding; earlier, if many guests will need to travel a long distance. “Save the Date” cards, sent out six months to a year in advance, are helpful if your wedding is a destination wedding or falls on a holiday weekend. In general, about 80 percent of those invited will attend a local wedding. For destination weddings, the percentage is usually lower. Decorating with flowers, shells, and other natural touches is more popular than ever. Candles are also popular. Guests love having something to remember your day! Jars of homemade jam, pots of succulents, flower seeds, or other small, personalized gifts make wonderful favors. Photo booths with fun props are still popular—guests get to keep their photos, and you get to keep the negatives. Don’t forget other important vendors, like a great photographer and videographer to document your nuptials. Choose wisely when selecting a local band or DJ so your wedding has the energy and tone that’s true to you. If this all seems overwhelming, consider hiring a wedding planner. You still get to make the decisions about your big day, but your planner has already done all the venue and vendor research for you! Planners can also be there the day of the wedding to take care of last-minute details and hitches. The most important step of all? Remember that weddings are about love and happiness. Don’t let the inevitable glitches get you down! Do your best to plan ahead, and then relax and enjoy a day you’ll never forget. A Very Few Things Right Meaningful Resolutions
New Year’s Resolutions. Magical motivation for a minute! I like New Year’s Resolutions. The whole concept of taking a little time to reflect on the year past, to review our achievements and areas where we might want to see improvement, is an exciting process. That’s got to be good for the soul, right? I do find, however, as I make my review and sketch out my resolutions, that I feel much as Steven Wright describes…. “Right now I’m having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.” —Steven Wright That’s why my New Year’s Resolutions always seem to come to me so quickly and seem familiar—they’re the same one’s Ive had for 30 years! Not that I feel terrible about this, because each year I enter the days ahead with conviction and resolve. I know that I will accomplish some things, and, wisely, will leave some things just as I have encountered them. Actually, I leave almost everything as I encounter it. As every new experience presents itself, I look for the opportunity to create the experience just as I would like to. Generally, I would like to leave most things as they are.

By Janet Van deWalle
“Equal opportunity means everyone will have a fair chance at being incompetent.” —Laurence J. Peter There are areas where I do feel confident and competent, and areas where I am certain that the tasks required to achieve success were definitely designed for another special person to experience. I feel it’s important to allow others the opportunity to create success. Therefore, I purposefully choose to leave most things as I encounter them. I might say that I resolve to leave most things unresolved. I will improve or change one or more things this year, as long as I’m certain it won’t upset the delicate balance of order established in the universe. “You only have to do a very few things right in your life so long as you don’t do too many things wrong.” —Warren Buffett I think the key to making meaningful resolutions that are able to be accomplished, is to gain some insight before making the resolutions. I need to gain some insight into what I’m all about, and why I’m here—what is my PURPOSE? With that insight, I can do a very few things right! “It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.” —Steven Wright
