2020, Here We Come! Happy New Decade! 2020. Wow! Every January 1st is a big deal, but when we throw in the beginning of a new decade, it’s even more special. I love the anticipation of what’s ahead for all of us. I realize that this is simply a manmade way to organize time, but it makes me pause and reflect about the previous decade. What a decade it has been! My grand-daughter, Savannah, who turned five in January of 2010, will be turning 15 this month. Learner’s permit, here we come! Happy birthday, Savannah! Savannah has grown into a beautiful young woman. She is confident, accepting, beautiful, and smart. Savannah’s sister, McKenna, will be 9 years old in August of 2020. My grand-daughters are something else! McKenna is the most confident 8-year-old I’ve ever met. I love her spunk. She has become quite the soccer player and plays goalie frequently. My daughter, Carissa, and her husband, Ken, are on a new adventure, as Ken got a new job that doesn’t require him to work nights and weekends. This hasn’t been true in the Rosa household for years. Now, he gets home at night, and they can spend time together as a family on the weekends! I am so pleased that they are finally able to do this. My life is terrific. My husband, Manny, and I are very happy. We celebrated our three-month anniversary on November 25th. A lot has happened in those three months. We faced a challenge with Manny’s father passing unexpectedly just a month after our wedding. The silver lining was that I was able to meet Manny’s entire family when we traveled back to Los Angeles for the service. Manny comes from a family of five kids. He is the oldest. Manny left for the Navy when he was just 18 years old, so he is working at reconnecting with his family. I am glad that I can go on that journey with him. I am planning that the decade of the twenties is going to be terrific for all of us. I am very optimistic about what we all have coming our way. There has been talk that the coming decade will be similar to the Roaring 1920s a century ago. Why did they call them the Roaring ’20s? It was due to the vibration of that time. It was an exuberant, fun, freewheeling time, filled with advances in freedom—particularly for women, science, and technology. I feel we will be having a repeat coming our way! Let’s bring in the New Decade right! Rejoice, smile, and make a complete stranger smile. Now, there is a terrific resolution!

Fulfill Your Bridal Fantasy Fresh Design Elements for Modern Brides By Holly Bell
Brides once spent a year or more looking for that perfect dress. With so many options available, it seemed like an impossible task to narrow it down to just one dress. Current bridal trends are changing, so you no longer have to labor over such a crucial decision. Now you can choose two or even three options to wear on your wedding day! According to The Knot’s annual wedding attire survey, 11 percent of 2018 brides wore more than one outfit on their wedding day, and the trend is expected to get even stronger. Every bridal special event deserves the perfect look! Consider a white belted blazer embellished with lace sleeves for the rehearsal dinner. The blazer is back in a big way in ready-to-wear; why not incorporate that fresh look into your wedding attire? The right blazer could be an important part of a more tailored, minimalist, or informal wedding look. For the reception, many brides choose to change into a more partyfriendly gown. After all, some of the most stunning bridal gowns aren’t exactly designed for dancing the night away! Consider a cocktail dress with a touch of elegance and a little sparkle. Keep it in the same color scheme as the wedding dress—even after the ceremony, the bride should look like the focus of the party and stand out from her guests. Speaking of color: The newest color story to grace the bridal runway is baby blue. Designers loved this new take on pastel options. You know the old saying about something blue! Of course, the cream and blush hues are always popular in bridal attire, but a wide range of color choices are on trend this year. Standouts are pistachio, soft gray, and lavender. I find the pink tones are exceptionally flattering, as they create a glowing “blushing bride” look. A few seasons ago, white with a touch of black was introduced, and this look has gained popularity every season. Weaving a black touch into the ensemble in the form of a belt, ribbons, or jacket brings a high-contrast and edgy look. A bridal gown in a subtle color or embellished with a contrasting color is a great way to stand out from the rest. Designers have spent the past few seasons falling in love with creative shoulders and sleeves in ready-to-wear. Bridal fashions have followed suit. Off-the-shoulder looks and capacious sleeves are creating some dramatic silhouettes reminiscent of dresses worn on the red carpet. With a dramatic statement neckline or sleeve, remember to keep everything else simple. One eye-catching detail is enough. Another traditional yet modern touch to wedding dresses 2020 is the creative use of sheer fabric. Wedding dresses are beautiful in motion and even more so with a sheer lower part of the gown. Usually starting around the knee, the sheer fabric gives a subtle peek-a-boo effect that is decidedly romantic. Sheer sleeves are also a wonderful option for winter brides or those who are modest about showing their arms. Sheer long sleeves are elegant and tasteful. Sheer bodice embellishments from the bust to the neckline are also a great way to be comfortable with a low-cut or even strapless dress. The high neck offers a touch of effortless elegance. The covered-up look is far from matronly; in fact, it is decidedly fashion-forward. Many gowns for 2020 feature sheer fabrics and ruffles around the neckline reminiscent of the Elizabethan era.

For the bride who wants to give a glimpse of a lovely leg, a thigh-high slit is offered on many gowns. On a form-fitting gown with simple lines, a properly placed slit can really turn heads! The key to maintaining an elegant look is to keep everything else simple and unadorned. If you’re the type who prefers to be heavily adorned, you’ll love the newest bridal embellishment this year: feathers! Joining lace, sequins, rhinestones, and pearls, feathers are a modern trend. Designers have added marabou feathers to hemlines, sleeves, and bodices for a soft, dreamy feel. The wedding veil is another important accessory to your gorgeous dress. A popular look in veils this year is the partial veil. It attaches to the back of the head and is embellished romantically with small artificial flowers. After all the hectic planning, don’t forget to enjoy the wedding day itself! Eat a good breakfast with protein to sustain you throughout your big day. Stay and be in the moment, savoring each minute. The day will go quickly, and you will want to remember it. Most importantly, don’t stress over details. Anything that doesn’t go as planned will make a wonderful and amusing moment to remember fondly for the rest of your life. The Good Life
Wedding Planning Enjoy the Experience, Enjoy the Day
By Angella A. Arndt
Congratulations—you’re getting married! After your initial excitement, you realize that you have to plan your wedding day. Where do you begin? What do you do? It can feel overwhelming, but you can get it done, and you can even enjoy the planning process! The first considerations are determining your budget and your guest list. Keeping these in mind from the beginning will eliminate heartache and over-spending during the planning process. Your biggest expenditures are likely to be your venue, food, and alcohol costs. Your budget and your guest list will go hand in hand—after all, a bigger party is likely a more expensive party. Figure out what wedding items are “must-haves,” and then plan accordingly. Next, select potential dates and venues. You will want to book your venue at least nine months to a year before the wedding, if possible, to ensure availability. What’s your venue budget? What’s your vision? Popular wedding themes are widely varied and include classic, art deco, bohemian, country, modern, natural, romantic, vintage, and whimsical. Set up interviews with potential venues. Is the venue available on your potential dates? What’s the cost and what does it include? How many guests can the venue handle? Is the location convenient for guests coming from out of town? Venues also have different policies about outside vendors. Does the venue have on-site catering, or do you hire your own caterer? If there is on-site catering, do they provide complimentary taste testing? Do they have an event coordinator? Do they have required vendors (for music, flowers, and the like), or can you choose your own? If your venue doesn’t provide food, you’ll need to select a caterer (the venue may have recommendations). Think about the type of food you want to serve. Set up interview appointments and ask if they will provide a sampling during your visit. Aside from their availability on your date, you’ll need more questions answered. Have they previously catered at your venue? Can they customize their menu? What are their most popular items? Can they handle special dietary needs? Is food made on-site or delivered? Do they have the necessary catering licenses and liability insurance? Do they provide an on-site coordinator at the event? Get a copy of the standard contract and review the deposit requirements, cancellation policy, and payment structure. Next up, wedding invitations. Local stationery stores or printers are great resources. You want an invitation that complements your theme, and they’ll help you achieve your vision. Current trends in wedding invitations include watercolor, monograms, gold foil, maps, and fun envelope liners. Save-thedate cards should go out eight to 10 months before
12
your wedding (or earlier, for destination or holiday weddings). Invitations should be mailed out eight to 10 weeks before your wedding. Interview photographers and videographers to make sure they are qualified to capture the important moments throughout your day. Think about the style you want, including things like classic, artistic, dramatic, and natural. Obtain references, review past work, and make sure the photographer or videographer specializes in your desired style. Music will enhance the mood of your ceremony and reception. When deciding on songs and instrumentation for the ceremony, think about the venue and the style of your wedding. For the reception: Will there be dancing? Do you want live or recorded music? Your music pro can help you select music to create your desired atmosphere. Flowers add a finishing touch to your special day. What’s your style? Modern, classic, vintage, or rustic? Browse magazines, social media, and floral shop websites for ideas. Florists generally have a unique design style—choose one who fits your vision. Selecting a cake vendor is one of the tastiest parts of wedding planning. Review vendor websites and on-site photo books for ideas. Are there specific cake elements that are must-haves, such as fondant work, hand painting, or fresh flowers? Meet with bakeries and sample their cake before making a decision. A wedding planner is an excellent option for those who would rather have someone else handle some or all of the details. Wedding planners will help you create a budget, negotiate vendor contracts, offer cost-saving tips, and troubleshoot on the big day. A full-service planner handles everything from beginning to end, an à la carte planner handles specific details as assigned, and a day-of coordinator makes sure your day runs smoothly. A wedding planner is worth a look if you want to save time and have a pro in your corner. Whether you choose to handle the arrangements yourself or hire a pro, being organized and planning will help your day run smoothly. You’ll be able to enjoy and cherish one of the most significant milestones of your life. Sources for this article included: herecomestheguide.com, marthastewart.com, theknot.com, and weddingwire.com. Diseases That Endanger Vision Prevention, Diagnosis, Treatment
By Linda Barnes
Most of us treasure our vision—and we should! After all, we receive 80 percent of our perceptions through our eyes. Surveys suggest that 25 million Americans experience vision loss, with results that can be mild to devastating. In addition to regular eye exams, we need to be vigilant about the health of our eyes. Knowing the symptoms of conditions that threaten eyesight is a wise strategy. Common eye conditions include glaucoma, cataracts, and detached retinas. With all these conditions, effective treatments are readily available. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor with highly focused training to identify and treat eye issues. These and other eyecare specialists can identify issues and diagnose diseases in their early stages, when treatment to prevent vision loss is most effective. Glaucoma damages the optic nerve when fluid builds up in the eye, putting pressure on the nerve. Symptoms are usually absent in the early stages, so regular check-ups are necessary, particularly for people older than 40 years. Untreated glaucoma can result in blindness and is the leading cause of blindness for people older than 60 years. Family history, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other health issues increase your risk of developing glaucoma. In some cases, the eye doesn’t drain fluid normally. This increase in fluid creates pressure, damaging the optic nerve. The damage often happens gradually, without pain or vision changes early on.

Your eye specialist has technology to measure the pressure in the eyes and can identify damage to the optic nerve. Once diagnosed, treatment might include daily eye drops. These work either by reducing the amount of fluid produced or by increasing the drainage of fluid. Surgical procedures can increase drainage or even create new drainage channels. The important thing is early diagnosis before serious damage occurs. Cataracts usually develop slowly over time, clouding your view of the world. They can occur at any age but are rare in the young. The clouding of your natural lens more commonly develops with age, often after age 60. Vision may be blurred, colors are less distinct, and poor night vision is typical. A thorough eye exam can detect clouding of the lens. Steps can be taken to aid vision during the early stages of the disease. A change of prescription may help. Increasing task lighting can aid reading, as
www.womensedition.com
can the use of a magnifying glass. Anti-glare eyeglasses may help with night driving. Surgery is not typically recommended until the cataract begins to significantly affect normal activities. At that point, surgery is often highly successful. The cloudy lens is removed, and an artificial lens is inserted. Medicare generally will cover this procedure for patients older than 65 years. My own personal experience with cataract surgery was very positive. Surgery was on an outpatient basis, with a light anesthetic for relaxation and local anesthetic to numb the eye area. I was drowsy but awake during the procedure. I was released soon after, with a patch over the operated eye. The patch came off the following day when I saw the surgeon again. A new development since my husband’s cataract surgery was the elimination of eye drops. He had two different drops to use several times a day. In my case, medicine was injected into my eye, so I didn’t have the bother of drops. Two weeks later, the second eye was done, also uneventfully. I did not need glasses because a near-vision lens was placed in one eye and a distance-vision lens was placed in the other eye. Not everyone can benefit from this fascinating arrangement! I was able to because I had worn contacts for years, utilizing one lens for reading and one for distance, so my brain was accustomed to it. The retina is the lining of the back wall of the eye. It sends signals to the optic nerve, making vision possible. The retina can peel away from the back wall of the eye, losing its blood supply, unable to function normally. This is called a detached retina, and it is an emergency that requires immediate attention. The symptoms can be mild, but don’t underestimate the threat to your vision! Symptoms can include flashing lights, floaters, and a shadowy curtain in the peripheral vision. Tears can develop when the gel-like substance that fills the eye pulls away from the retina. The severity of symptoms usually correlates with the extent of the detachment. Re-attachment of the retina is the treatment goal, along with sealing any tears or holes that initiated the detachment. Surgery, laser treatment, or insertion of a bubble is quite effective, but early intervention is essential to save vision. Our eyes are too precious to ignore symptoms or neglect regular check-ups. Do yourself a favor and take good care of them. Sources for this article included: asrs.org, aafp.org, and aoa.org. WE

Out With the Old, In With the New Plastic Surgery Options
By Loretta McCollum
We’ve all heard the expression “New year, new you.” This year, take that phrase at its word. Let’s explore the multiple cosmetic surgery options that can diminish the signs of aging, boost your confidence, and give you a new look in 2020. Whether you want to wind back the clock or bring some balance and proportion to your features, it’s important to do your research to find a qualified professional with solid credentials and experience in the procedures you select. Any licensed physician can perform cosmetic surgery, but it’s important to check out a physician’s training, experience, and track record. You should seek out a surgeon who is certified by a medical board in the area that pertains to the surgery you desire (for example, the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for a facial procedure). Board certification means that a surgeon has completed extra training and has been positively evaluated by other professionals. Board certification is important, but it’s not more important than experience. Be sure that the surgeon you choose is wellpracticed in the specific procedure that you’re having done. Ask to examine before-and-after photos, including photos that are taken years after the procedure, to see how the results are aging on other patients. Women often seek out anti-aging cosmetic surgery beginning

around age 40. Aging skin loses elasticity and volume, which is when crow’s feet, furrowed brows, and jowls start to appear. One of the most popular procedures is the full face lift, which addresses the entire face and neck. This procedure lifts and firms sagging tissue, smooths deep creases and folds, and tightens facial tissue. The surgeon makes small incisions behind the hairline, repositions deep tissue beneath the skin, and removes excess skin, restoring shape. General anesthesia is used. The recovery period is about two weeks. Eyes may be the window to the soul, but bags and droopy lids can cloud that window. An upper eyelid lift removes fat and extra skin that has lost its shape. A lower lid lift removes and repositions fatty tissue and also tightens muscles, smoothing wrinkles and decreasing under-eye bags and puffiness. Incisions are made in natural eye creases, making them virtually invisible. As with a face
www.womensedition.com
lift, you can expect about two weeks for recovery. You may return to normal activities sooner, but it will take about two weeks for bruising and swelling to resolve. Do your brow line and forehead wrinkles make you appear to be in a constant scowl? Similar to an eyelid lift, a brow or forehead lift also removes excess skin and repositions muscle tissue. Tiny incisions along the hairline are virtually invisible, correcting those deep furrows and creases. Two weeks is the usual recovery time. Aging and weight gain alter the angles of the lower face and neck, bringing multiple chins or loose, flapping skin. If this description sounds familiar, consider neck contouring surgery. This procedure removes extra fatty skin and tightens muscles, smoothing wrinkles, creating a defined jawline, and reducing the appearance of neck bands. Recovery time is similar to that of a full face lift. If your nose sticks out like a sore thumb, you may want to consider rhinoplasty. It can enhance appearance and also help correct birth defects or breathing problems. This procedure can reshape, straighten, or shorten the nose, improving facial symmetry by altering bone, cartilage, skin, or all of the above. Plan for a sevenday recovery period, followed by possible swelling for a few months. Otoplasty reshapes the outer ear in an effort to either improve appearance or correct a deformity. Incisions are usually made on the back of the ear while the patient is under local or general anesthesia. Expect the ears to be bandaged for five to seven days. An important question when considering cosmetic surgery is whether or not insurance will cover the cost. Typically, these types of surgeries are considered elective and are therefore not covered by most insurance plans, unless the procedure is deemed to improve the health of the patient. (Examples might include the correction of crooked nasal passages that impede breathing or severe eyelid droop that impairs vision.) Check with your physician and insurance company prior to undergoing any of the procedures described above. Whether your insurance will cover it or not, improvements to self-confidence and self-esteem can be deciding factors in the decision to undergo facial cosmetic surgery. You need to determine for yourself whether 2020 will be the year for a new you. Get in Shape in Private Latest Trends in Home Gyms
By Robyn V. Powell
Many Americans kick off the New Year with a resolution to live a healthier lifestyle and to get fit. Gym memberships soar every January and then, despite the best of intentions, fall off as people tire of the gym grind. Recent research suggests that as many as 80 percent of people who sign up for a gym membership drop out within just eight weeks. Perhaps you’ve experienced this yourself or are just not getting to the gym as often as you had hoped. If so, it may be time to rethink a gym membership and consider a home gym. The idea of building a home gym and purchasing fitness equipment can seem daunting. Taking a closer look at the cost benefits may just convince you to take the plunge! Setting up a home gym definitely involves some upfront costs, so it’s best to look at your home gym as a long-term investment. Treadmills, stationary bikes, and weights can be expensive, but the fact that you’re not paying for a gym membership will save you money over time. A smart approach is to invest in high-quality equipment that is tailored to your preferences. For instance, if you love cycling, you can buy a stationary bike equipped with extra programs and set it up just the way you like it. No more
wasting time making minor adjustments like seat height. Instead, you get straight into your workout. Since you (and perhaps a few lucky friends or family members) will be the only ones using the equipment, it will endure far less wear and tear than at a public gym. With proper maintenance, high-quality home gym equipment will last for decades. Though financial savings can be significant, the real value of a home gym is saved time. Driving to and from the gym, not to mention having to stand around waiting for someone to finish using the machine, is time wasted. When you have to find that extra time to travel to and from the gym, it encourages you to skip your workout. Excuses begin to creep in—you’re too tired, or the weather outside is terrible. Having all the equipment you need for a great workout right under your own roof is a powerful motivator to keep you on track to meet your fitness goals. All-hours access ›››

and no waiting equates to a more efficient use of your time. Choose to work out before you leave for the office or as soon as you get home, with the convenience of your own shower just steps away. The biggest trend in home gyms is home-assisted training. People are investing in treadmills and stationary bikes that are equipped with a monitor screen and software that offers access to various instructor-led workout routines. It’s like having a personal trainer right in your own home. These internet-enabled systems allow for competition with people around the world, making your workout interactive and fun by bringing the spin class to you. A home gym can be built just about anywhere in your home, like in a spare bedroom, the basement, or even a garage. Your ultimate home gym setup will depend on the space you have and how much equipment you want. When it comes to flooring considerations, rubber and vinyl are the most durable options. Rubber is a natural shock absorber. Rubber mats are great for yoga exercises and as a base mat under treadmills and other equipment. Carpet is not recommended, as it likely can’t handle the abuse and will definitely absorb odors. If space is limited and you want to step up your home gym, a bar mounted on the wall or ceiling will give your space an authentic gym feel. Pull-up bars offer versatility and allow you to target specific muscles. These space-saving setups can be equipped with extra accessories like gymnastic rings, yoga straps, and punching bags. Adding a mirrored wall may seem extravagant, but gym mirrors are not just for vanity. A mirror is a vital tool to let you see if you are exercising properly. Assessing your form while going through the motions ensures you are doing things correctly and reduces the chance of injuring yourself due to poor form. Last but not least, paint your home gym an inspiring color. Even if the rest of your home has a modern, neutral palette, the gym is one room to make an exception. Bold colors infuse instant energy, get you pumped, and keep you exercising longer. Bright orange, blue, or red walls will have you off and running! Once you’ve enjoyed the convenience of your own home gym, you’ll wonder how you ever got yourself to go to the gym. Get Fit in 2020! Fitness Choices for the New Year By Janette Calabro
We’re not all athletes, but we can all commit to getting fit. Let’s get in shape because we want to, not because we have to. Start fresh in 2020 with a new attitude about fitness and a real plan to achieve it. Exercise does more than make you sweat! Being physically fit brings benefits for physical health and mental health—not to mention the benefit of how you look in those new jeans. There are numerous ways to get fit; you should choose your workouts based on your abilities, likes, and dislikes. For example, axe-throwing is a thing, and not just for lumberjacks, but if that doesn’t thrill you, there are other ways to build up your shoulders and core muscles. In the same line of thinking, you don’t have to be a trained dancer to enjoy the bouncy fun of a dancebased workout or a barre class. Before you dive into any fitness routine, it’s good to be informed about the differences between low-impact and high-impact exercise. Both are beneficial, and you can modify most exercises to suit your level or needs, but some physical limitations make high-impact exercise a riskier proposition. For example, if you have arthritis in your knees, jumping squats and running aren’t your best options. Even if your limitation is only temporary—you’re recovering from an injury, are pregnant, or have sore joints—it’s best to ease into low-impact exercise for safety and effectiveness. Low-impact exercise is gentler on the joints and requires at least one foot on the ground. It’s also great for people who are new to exercise or who simply don’t like higher-impact workouts. Bodyweight training, like push-ups or planks, is a low-impact regimen that uses the weight from your own body for resistance. As you condition your body, you can eventually up the ante by increasing repetitions and challenging yourself with more difficult routines. Consider hiring a personal trainer for a plan to keep you accountable. They can also cue proper body form so you get the most out of each exercise and avoid injury. Low-impact exercise doesn’t mean you have to skip cardio. Get to the gym and hop on the elliptical. Pedaling above the ground instead of stepping against a hard surface is easier on your joints. Join a spin class for great cardio benefits while sitting instead of standing. If you’d rather be outdoors, you can take a hike or a bike ride on scenic trail. If water is more your speed, jump into the swimming pool and swim laps or tread water. You’ll get cardio benefits if you swim for at least 10 minutes. You’ll exit refreshed and ready to tackle the day. Don’t forget about water aerobics. All that low-impact resistance will burn calories and define muscles without high-impact jolts to your sensitive joints, and you’ll probably have lots of fun! Honorable mentions for low-impact exercise with
20
tons of mind-body benefits include Pilates and yoga. A Pilates class will strengthen and lengthen, often using special equipment, to get that lean ballet body. Joseph Pilates, the inventor of Pilates, stressed using the breath and coordinating the mind, body, and spirit in order to achieve fitness. Although this technique targets the deep muscles in your core, the whole body is worked to improve strength, alignment, and flexibility. Joseph Pilates said, “In 10 sessions, you’ll feel the difference. In 20 sessions, you’ll see the difference. In 30 sessions, you’ll have a new body.” Learning how to properly move your body takes effort and practice, but it’s worth it. All exercise becomes more effective when you learn how to move. Yoga is often described as a relaxing, meditative practice, using the breath and flowing smoothly through physical poses, but that’s not all it is. Yoga is an old discipline from India, and its purposes are many, including improvement of health and happiness. If you want to relax your mind, ease lower back pain, and find inner peace, yoga might be right up your alley. If you’re new to the HIIT craze, don’t let the explosive movements scare you. HIIT (high-intensity interval training) alternates between high-intensity and low-intensity motion, and it remains a top trend for exercise choices. HIIT promises a greater calorie burn in the least amount of time, combining short bursts of intense activity with rest in between. There’s a strict definition for heart rate, too. You should reach at least 80 percent of maximum capacity during a window of one to five minutes before switching to periods of rest or lowerintensity exercise. The purpose is to increase aerobic capacity, stamina, and the ability to build muscle. What does a typical HIIT routine look like? That depends on what type of exercise you do. A high-impact runner’s version might alternate sprints with jogging. A fitness studio might alternate 45 seconds of squats into
www.womensedition.com
15 seconds of crunches for a low-impact routine. HIIT workouts range from 10 minutes to a full hour. Shoot for at least 20 minutes to melt away fat. High-impact routines move both feet off the ground at the same time. If your workout includes jumping jacks, running laps, or jumping from plyo boxes at the gym, you’re in high-impact mode. Contact with the floor or equipment is hard and frequent. If you want a challenge, want to lose weight faster, and you’re at a low risk for injury, go for it! High-impact movement includes things like CrossFit, kickboxing, or a long run—if your joints don’t mind. Do you ever feel like punching something? If so, consider kickboxing. This high-intensity martial arts workout burns about 750 calories per hour, combining cardio and strength training to tone muscles and melt away fat. There’s plenty of punching and kicking. Body transformation is fast, fun, and continually pushes you toward a higher fitness level. Expect to throw punches wearing boxing gloves and kick away the day’s challenges. It’s great exercise and a great stress reliever. CrossFit was created by a gymnast in the mid-1990s and is aimed at strengthening the body with exercises of power, speed, coordination, stamina, and balance. Like HIIT, exercises are mixed to exert the maximum force in the shortest amount of time, but CrossFit squeezes in gymnastics and even Olympic weight lifting to mix things up a little more. All those kettlebells and battle ropes need proper body form to be safe and effective. This is one routine that really needs the trained eye of a coach or personal trainer to make sure you’re moving your body properly and using the equipment safely. Personal trainers can do a great deal to kick your fitness into high gear (or low gear, or whatever gear you need). They help you
to set goals with a fitness plan based on your individual needs. They’re great motivators, keeping you accountable even when you find an excuse to skip your workout. They keep you educated about how your body moves and train you to keep proper form in each exercise. The value added is priceless! Another way to keep yourself accountable is to join a gym. Most offer group fitness classes, from indoor cycling to yoga and Pilates. There is often a swimming pool for those sore joints. You can enlist a personal trainer, too, often with a complimentary session so you can decide if that’s a good fit. Take a foam-rolling class to work out sore muscles at the end of the week or walk the track inside on a snowy day. Be sure to look for gyms that prioritize cleanliness and offer equipment and classes that interest you. In addition to large gyms or fitness centers that offer a wide variety of workouts, there are also workout-specific facilities where they focus on a single program like CrossFit or kickboxing. If you’re dedicated to a specific program, this might be a great convenience for you—a dedicated facility can offer a full schedule of the same class, making it easier to fit in your workout. Whether refining your downward dog in a grounding yoga class, training for a marathon at the track, elongating your body with Pilates, or sprinting and resting during HIIT, you can get the benefits of exercise while doing an activity you enjoy. Combine a few for multiple benefits. Join a hula-fit class (yes, with hula hoops) one day, and dance your troubles away in a Zumba or Refit class the next. Find your strengths and weaknesses, train harder and smarter, and change out the old you for a new you. Cheers! Sources for this article included: vox.com, glofox.com, yogasite. com, and livefit.com. To Your Good Health
Don’t Just Get Thin… Get Healthy!
By Leslie Byrne
It’s January, and most of us take the opportunity to swear that this is the year we will finally take off the weight. This year, don’t focus on getting thin. Focus on getting healthy! The health risks associated with obesity are sobering. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), about 93 million adults in the United States are obese. Obesity can cause heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even some cancers. The good news is that reaching a healthier weight is definitely possible, if you have the right help. Want more good news? You don’t need to get back to your high school weight to be healthy. One measure of healthy adult weight is a body mass index (BMI) between 18 and 24. There are many ways to measure healthy weight—talk to your healthcare provider about what would be healthy for you. Just as important as weight loss is maintaining a healthy weight in the long term. Studies find that yo-yo dieting can cause heart problems. It’s best to adjust your lifestyle to find a healthy diet that will work for a lifetime. How do you know what program is right for you? Before you can choose the best one for you, you’ll need to have a good understanding of where you are, health-wise. A great place to start is at your doctor’s office. Our bodies change over time, and our nutritional needs change, too. The weight loss needs of someone who wants to take off some pregnancy weight may be very different from someone going through menopause or who has
24
had a health scare.Your doctor can help you figure out your needs. You also need to make sure that your weight gain is not caused by an underlying health issue. Your age and your overall health may help determine which diet you should try. For example, a recent study has revealed that a diet high in protein and low in calories can help older adults lose weight without sacrificing muscle mass or bone density. Let’s take a look at some popular plans for weight loss. ChiroThin includes dietary supplements that have ingredients to promote and increase metabolism. The program includes detoxification from eating anti-inflammatory foods with a low glycemic index (that is, carbohydrates that do not cause a rise in blood glucose and are more slowly digested). The program is supervised by a doctor in weekly meetings. The Jenny Craig diet plan provides prepackaged meals and clients can work with a personal Jenny Craig consultant to achieve their weight loss goals. The strategy is to remove the guesswork about what to eat and to make weight loss simple. This is a good
www.womensedition.com
plan for people who are too busy to cook or find it hard to cook healthy food. Members can benefit from learning how to make better food choices to weekly meal planning and exercise tips from coaching professionals. The First Fitness program focuses on supplements and diet shakes. It offers online support and direction. First Fitness holds online challenges to encourage members. Weight Watchers is popular all over the world. The program does not sell food or supplements; instead, it teaches members how to make smart food choices to lose weight while eating regular food. They use a daily points system to help members eat healthy, and there are no forbidden foods. The support consists of in-person meetings, online meetings, or both. Profile offers one-on-one coaching, personal plans, and a special home scale that makes your weigh-in information available to your coach. The program sells prepared food; members add food from the grocery store. The plan was developed at Sanford Health, a healthcare system with locations all over the world. The focus is on personalized nutrition, activity, and lifestyle coaching. With Metabolic Research Center, the focus is on foods that increase metabolism as well as education on eating healthy. They focus on hormone imbalance as a reason many people struggle to lose weight. Another great option for losing weight and keeping it off is nutritional counseling. Nutritionists address food behavior, teaching clients about nutrition and the health aspects of food. Though nutritionists do not explicitly lead weight loss programs, they can supervise the nutrition in the foods you eat while dieting. If you have medical conditions that must be monitored, your doctor may agree that having you work with a nutritionist would be a healthy option for you. Whatever plan you try, don’t do it alone! All of these programs offer a level of support that increases your chances of not only losing the weight but keeping it off. This year, frame your weight loss goal as reaching a healthy weight instead of just “getting thin.” This mindset, along with the right support, could mean that 2020 is the year you’ll finally meet your weight loss goal! Time Shoppe Standing the Test of Time
By Lisa Lightner
The year was 1970. David Wolfe joined his father, Don Wolfe, in the watch repair business. Don had studied watch repair in Kansas City and worked at a jewelry store in St. Louis before settling back in Lincoln in 1954 to work in the jewelry department at the JCPenney on O Street. He became his son’s mentor, teaching David the skills he had honed over decades. In 1989, Time Out had become Time Shoppe and had moved 52 blocks east, to its current location at 64th and O Streets. The family-run business continues its 30 plus year tradition as Lincoln’s premier watch repair store, with Vickie, daughter Emily, and granddaughter Grace all on the team. The industry has changed over the years, and jewelry stores now send out watches to be repaired. Time Shoppe is one of the most trusted in-house repair shops. Whether you have an antique pocket watch or a modern watch, many repairs can be done while you wait. Horology is the study of the measurement of time and mechanical time-keeping devices, as well as the art of making (and repairing) clocks and watches. Horologists like David use a watchmaker’s loupe (a small magnifying glass worn over just one eye) and a variety of small tools to manipulate the complex sets of gears. Some of the most common parts of a watch that need repair or replacement are the crystal (glass cover), the crown (the dial on the side of the watch), the stem (the piece that turns the hands), the mainsprings, and the balance staffs. “I fell in love with the balance mechanism and its movement,” David explains as he carefully opens a watch to reveal its inner workings. The two most common types of watches are the quartz movement, introduced around the 1970s, and the older mechanical movement. A mechanical watch is powered by manually winding the mainspring, which transmits energy through a set of gears that make the hands move. A quartz watch is run by a piece of synthetic quartz, called an oscillator, that runs off of vibrations given off by the battery. How can you tell which kind of watch you have? Try listening: If the second hand goes tick, tick, tick, the watch is manual. The second hand on a watch with no battery moves in a fluid, sweeping motion. To keep them running smoothly, watches need to be cleaned and oiled every few years. Of course, some will need a new battery. (Devices like Fitbits, Apple watches, and iPhones run on printed circuits that require consumers to send them back to the manufacturer for repair.) There are several types of watch battery. Silver oxide and lithium batteries usually last about two years. Solar batteries convert light into electrical energy that is stored in a rechargeable capacitor or accumulator. They can last up to 10 years. Sizes vary depending on the voltage needed to run the device. Time Shoppe carries a wide
26
range of batteries, including those for car key fobs, toys, miniature clocks, and the like. They specialize in replacement of Seiko David and Kinetic and Citizen Eco-Drive capacitors. Vickie Wolfe Time Shoppe also offers replacement, repair, and sizing of watchbands. They carry a variety of men’s and women’s watchbands made for both form and function. Their stock includes expansion and non-expansion metal bands, leather watchbands, rubber sport bands, and the ever-popular Speidel watchbands. The most common way to wear a watch is on the non-dominant hand, so it doesn’t get in the way (right-handed people wear it on the left; left-handers wear it on the right), but David says it’s a personal preference. In addition to watchbands, they also offer a selection of Seiko, Timex, and Husker watches. David’s family heirloom is a timepiece that came from his grandmother—a pendant watch on a chain that women in “Our customers come from her time would wear across Nebraska and adjoining as a necklace. David notes that pocket states like Iowa, Kansas, watches are making a comeback as they Colorado—even from as far are passed down to away as Georgia, Washington new generations. According to Vickie, State, and New York. They “Our customers come from across Nebraska move away but come back and adjoining states to visit and bring their like Iowa, Kansas, Colorado—even watches for repair.” from as far away as Georgia, Washington State, and New York. They move away but come back to visit and bring their watches for repair.” Voted #1 in watch repair since the beginning of KFOR’s Best of Lincoln, Time Shoppe is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and is a member of the American Watch and Clockmakers Institute. Located at 6450 O Street, the shop is open Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Find them online at tslincoln.com and on Facebook (search for Time Shoppe). Kitchen Remodel A New Look for a New Decade By Anne Yankus
The start of a new decade is a great time to refresh many things in our lives. Why not start with a freshly remodeled kitchen? It’s really the heart of the home, and it may be long overdue for some attention. There are many elements to consider when remodeling your kitchen, but it’s a good idea to look at what is trending in your area. Marble and other stone counters are in, but the pristine white kitchens of yesteryear are just that: in the past. Color is making a comeback, whether it’s veined marble, pops of color on cabinet doors and other accents, or even natural wood cabinetry. Unique items like standout sinks, kitchen larders, plate racks, and double islands are also coming in style. Cabinets are a very popular item to change during a kitchen remodel. If your existing cabinets are solid and you’re happy with their layout, you might consider cabinet refacing instead of gutting the kitchen. Cabinet refacing leaves the framework of your existing cabinets intact and adds a new set of doors and veneer on top that brings the appearance of brand-new cabinets at as low as one fifth of the cost! There are three types of cabinet refacing materials: plastic laminate, rigid thermofoil (RTF), and wood veneer. Plastic laminate comes in a wide variety of designs (from solid colors to wood grains). Rigid thermofoil is more flexible and will therefore fit on a wider variety of cabinet frames, but it typically comes in fewer colors and patterns. Wood veneers remain the most natural-looking of all your options; they are also the most expensive. If you’ve got the budget and the desire for it, you can completely remodel your cabinets to a new design. For the greatest level of control, you can hire a carpenter to draw and build custom cabinets to your exact specifications. This is an especially good choice if the layout you want is unusual. If you want new cabinets but don’t need anything particularly unique in terms of shapes or sizes, you can go with the less expensive option of pre-made cabinets that are professionally installed. If you like your existing cabinets but find yourself longing for a new color scheme, try a new paint job. Giving your cabinets a fresh coat of paint in a new color can accomplish just as much of a face lift as refacing but at a fraction of the cost. Keep in mind that all the doors and hardware will need to be removed before painting can begin. The cabinets will need to be meticulously cleaned (they probably have grease on them) and sanded, too. For best results, hire a professional painter. With the cabinets out of the way, the next thing to think about is countertops. Stone countertops are in, from high-end materials like quartz and marble to the more affordable but equally durable granite. If you don’t want to spring for a giant slab of stone,
28
you can often get a similar visual using patterned laminates, which come with a much lower price tag and can often be installed on top of your existing countertops. The next thing to consider in your remodeling project is cabinet hardware. Mixing and matching cabinet hardware like knobs and pulls has become increasingly popular over the last year. Before you make new selections, take into consideration any existing holes your previous cabinet hardware has left behind. Brass and bronze hardware are classic options, but crystal, glass, and stone knobs can provide a nice contrast and splash of color to an otherwise monotonous row of knobs. Now that you’ve spent time and money on the counters and cabinets, you want the right lighting to show them off. Hanging lights are rising in popularity, and they can be customized in a variety of ways. From long brass pendants to multi-colored glass lamps to various metal geometric shapes, having unique lighting fixtures can add flair to any kitchen. Task lighting is also vital in the kitchen—you don’t want the vegetables you’re chopping to be in a shadow! Before your project is finished, cast your focus on the floors. There are flooring options out there to fit everyone’s style and budget. Porcelain tile is durable and less porous than ceramic tile, and it can come glazed in a variety of colors or unglazed in natural, earthy colors. Hardwood floors can be resistant to moisture and splashes, are low-maintenance, and will give your kitchen a warm, classic look. From floor to ceiling and back again, give your kitchen a fresh look going into 2020! Sources for this article included: countryliving.com, homesandgardens.com, thisoldhouse.com, and hgtv.com. WE

More Than Sharing Fritos Making Time for Friends Do you remember having a best friend in grade school? I remember the best friend I had when I was in first grade. She was my next door neighbor and was most likely a year or so younger than I was. We would skip down the hill, holding each other’s hands. I would share my small bag of Fritos with her, even though Fritos were absolutely my favorite afternoon snack. We would sit on our shared driveway, looking at the sky, telling each other our “secrets.” She was not in my life for a very long time, but I remember her to this day. “There’s something about childhood friends that you just can’t replace.”—Lisa Whelchel Before I knew what happened, I grew up. Life happened, and I made many new friends. I have work friends, family friends, couples friends, long-distance friends—so many friends! “A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg even though he knows that you are slightly cracked.” —Bernard Meltzer Over the years, I have had friends come and go. I have had to face the fact that many people who I thought were my friends really didn’t have my best interests at heart. That’s a hard thing to

face, but it’s part of growing up. It’s part of becoming an adult. “Adulthood is like the vet, and we’re all the dogs that were excited for the car ride until we realized where we’re going.”—Anonymous As an adult, I look for a little more from my friends than simply sharing our favorite snacks. I want them to be honest with me. I want them to teach me to be better. I want them to challenge me when I am not doing my best. I want to trust that they will tell me the truth. “A friend can tell you things you don’t want to tell yourself.”—Frances Ward Weller I admit, this was a very hard lesson for me to learn. Life moves so very fast, and building and maintaining relationships with true friends requires a commitment of time—the one commodity that we cannot buy more of. I have learned that it is worth it to invest in friendship, even when what they tell us hurts our pride! “Our chief want in life is somebody who will make us do what we can.”—Ralph Waldo Emerson I hope that you are all blessed to have at least a couple of true friends in your life. They are here for a reason. WE

Smile. Hug. Apologize. Defuse an Escalating Situation It doesn’t seem possible that 2019 will be gone in just a few weeks. If the old adage of “time flies when you’re having fun” is true, then I must be having an absolute ball! In general, 2019 was a good year—except for a few minor rough spots. I’ve been thinking about how some of those hiccups could have been avoided or smoothed over. I think the best way of smoothing conflicts, wherever they occur, is open and honest communication. We won’t always agree with everyone on everything. Disagreements or differences of opinion can be overcome, and they don’t have to lead to ill will. We all have bad days. I generally try not to let my bad mood spill over into any relationships. No one else should have to suffer because I’m unhappy. Once in a while, we all slip and say something snarky that we immediately regret. I did, and it escalated into a shouting match. We parted NOT on the best of terms. I later apologized to everyone else who was witness to my temper and also to the friend I snipped at. Don’t ever be afraid to say you’re sorry. If you’re on the receiving end of someone’s tantrum, try to understand that it’s usually a temporary mood that may not have had much to do with you at all. Forgive these people. Chances are, they aren’t happy about what happened, either. We all have arguments within the family. I remember a time
By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS
when I had been really worried when the kids were late. Boy, did they get it when they finally got home! Then I apologized for yelling and explained how worried I’d been. I still worry about my kids…and they’re all adults. We occasionally have disagreements over something minor but can usually talk through them. I always end a phone call, visit, or time together by saying, “Love you!” Those who write advice columns tell people to talk it out. Get counseling. Find out the real reason for the argument or disagreement. “Don’t go to bed mad” is often good advice. Sometimes it helps to let people get things off their chest. Sometimes I argue with myself. I try to do it in the privacy of my own home or in the car…I don’t need witnesses to me berating myself. I guess I’m trying to say that you shouldn’t let bad terms or misunderstandings be the end of an argument. There’s always a reason for an argument, but there isn’t always a right side and a wrong side. People are individuals. We shouldn’t always think the same. How boring would that be? A hug, a smile, an apology— these are great ways to smooth things over and defuse what could be a volatile situation. Even with kids. Remember, they’re people, too. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Driving in Winter The Good, the Bad, and the Icy
By Brennan Hallock
From holidays and get-togethers to snowboarding and skiing to a fresh start on our yearly goals, there’s a lot to love about winter. There’s a lot to dread, too, like icy roads, frigid cold, and dangerous driving. Snow and ice reduce the amount of traction that tires can get on the road. That makes a vehicle more challenging to handle, even for skilled and experienced drivers. Most of us can’t totally avoid driving in wintry conditions, though. No matter what the weather, we’ve all got places to go! There are some precautions you can take, however, to increase your chances of arriving safely. Start by slowing down. The amount of space required to speed up or slow down increases when the roads are slippery. This means that posted speed limits may be too fast for icy conditions. Don’t be afraid to drive slower! It’s better to drive too slowly and arrive late than drive too fast and cause an accident. Keep in mind that other drivers may also be struggling to maintain control of their vehicles. To drive successfully on icy roads, it’s important to understand your brakes. Older vehicles have brakes that lock, which can lead the car to skid and lose control. With this type of brakes, you have to gently pump the pedal to slow down quickly—don’t just push it all the way to the floor. Modern cars, however, have anti-lock brakes that do that work for you. With
anti-lock brakes, press the pedal down firmly and hold it when you need to stop short. In any conditions, tires with adequate tread will improve your stopping and going. In wintry conditions, your tires’ tread will make a major difference in the amount of control you have. If conditions remain icy during much of the season where you live, consider investing in snow tires. The last tip is to promote visibility. With the shorter days of winter, you’ll likely be driving in the dark more often. Add to this winter storms, and it is important to make sure your headlights, wipers, and windshield are prepared to keep your vision clear. Even if you take precautions, you may still find yourself in a winter accident. Wintry road conditions result in about 156,000 accidents in the United States every year. Accidents can be

confusing and disorienting, even if no one is injured, so make sure you know what to do. First, you need to ensure your safety and the safety of everyone else who was in the accident. This usually means moving your vehicle out of the flow of traffic. If you can’t move your vehicle, at least move yourself and your passengers away from the scene of the accident. If it’s dark outside and the roads are slick, passing drivers may have limited visibility, so it’s important to step to a safe location. Next, contact the police and request emergency medical attention, if necessary. If your vehicle is blocking traffic, the police will need to reroute the flow of traffic to avoid more accidents. You will also need to have them file a police report for later use. Take photographs in case you need to show the damage and the road conditions to your attorney or a traffic court at a later date. If there were any witnesses, get their names and contact information. If your vehicle is seriously damaged, contact a towing company. If the police recommend that you not drive your
vehicle away from the scene, take their advice. In many cases, a vehicle that looks drivable is not safe because of internal damage to the radiator or engine compartment. Report the incident to your insurance company and let them handle the details. If the accident is serious, call your attorney, as well. Do not speak to the other driver’s insurance company; leave that to your insurance company or attorney. Your insurance company will help you determine what you should do to repair your vehicle. They will recommend repair shops where you can take your vehicle to be assessed, but you can take your vehicle to a shop of your choice. In the meantime, many insurance companies will provide a rental vehicle for your use. Ask your insurance company if this is an option and if you will incur an extra cost. No matter how carefully you drive, you may end up in an accident caused by icy road conditions this winter. Knowing how best to avoid one and what to do when one occurs can help ease your mind in a difficult situation. Sources for this article included: cars.usnews.com, carsurance. net, and thebalance.com. Positive Perspective
Go Ahead and Make Mistakes At Least You’re Doing Something “We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is Opportunity, and its first chapter is New Year’s Day. —Edith Lovejoy Pierce I love this quote! A new year is a wonderful time to make a decision about how we are going to be in the coming months… and this year, we get to decide how we are going to be in the next decade! The twenties are here! It’s time to try out different approaches to old challenges. It’s time to shake things up in all areas of our lives. It’s time to make some mistakes! “Make mistakes, because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and, more importantly, you’re doing something.”—Neil Gaiman Doing something…wow. Making goals in regard to our health, our relationships, our finances—this is typically what we pledge for our New Year’s resolutions. I have heard that most of us have broken our New Year’s resolutions by the time the end of January rolls around. Breaking a resolution can make it feel like it was a mistake to set the goal in the first place. However, walking into this decade
By Janet Van deWalle
knowing that we will make mistakes—and that this is a GOOD thing—makes life feel like an exciting adventure instead of an unattainable mountain peak. At least, as the quote says, we are doing something. “What the New Year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the New Year.”—Vern McClellan Making mistakes is a scary thought to most of us. I think it may go back to our school days, when the teacher would mark our papers in red ink when we made mistakes. I don’t know about you, but I did not relish seeing my school paper all marked up in red. It felt like a bad thing. This new approach, that mistakes are good things, feels a whole lot better. This idea has given me permission to try new things, to take more chances, to live a fuller life. It has given me an entirely new perspective on goals. A whole new perspective on change. If my plan A doesn’t work out, I can always move on to Plan B. “As long as you’re alive, you’ll always have a Plan B.” —Kristen Granata Let’s make the coming decade a terrific one...and let’s make lots and lots of mistakes!
