Celebrate the USA! Hello, everyone. Happy Independence Day! I feel this year is the year to have a bigger celebration than we have had in a very, very long time. Think about what our forefathers did to create this great country that we are so very fortunate to call our home. On July 4th, 1776, the day that is celebrated as the birth of American independence, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence. Our country has been through so much…but we are still here! My guess is that the year 2020 will go down in history as one for the record books. Businesses have had to learn how to work differently. Parents have had to learn to be teachers. We all have had to look deep inside ourselves to discover what is right…and what is wrong. Many of us are simply worn out from all of the challenges. I have discovered that the citizens of the United States are a tough bunch of human beings. We do not agree on everything…and, thank God, we all have the right to express our own opinions. After all, that is what this country was built on. As difficult as this year has been, I find myself appreciating all of the challenges that have come our way. Personally, this has made me stretch my thinking and reflect on my own personal values, passions, and beliefs. I find myself rereading the Constitution of the United States to remind myself why this country was founded. I have always considered myself a patriot, a supporter of what our forefathers wanted when they fought for independence. This year has made me delve deeper into my beliefs about what the United States of America is and what our forefathers intended it to be. The great news is that I believe our forefathers are smiling down on us. They see that we are fighting to learn, to grow, to become better. They are smiling because we still allow free speech. They are smiling because we still have the freedom to speak our minds, to have a difference of opinion, and to come together for the common good. This July 4th, I am hoping that we can all gather with family and friends to celebrate the United State of America. This is a great country, and I truly would not want to live anywhere else. We can learn, and grow, and be better through all of these challenges. We can do this! Please light a sparkler for all of us! See you next month.

Kick-Back Clothing Casual Can Be Cute!

By Holly Bell

Many of us are spending more time at home than ever before. That does not mean we are wearing our pajamas 24/7! We still want to feel good about ourselves and be able to satisfy our inner fashionistas. Lots of people turn to kickback clothing for at-home casual attire. Here are some ideas for you to incorporate into your wardrobe so you can be comfy, stylish, and ready for anything the day brings! Start by choosing a bright color. Bright colors are sure to cheer you up—just looking at them creates an energy! Bright colors will motivate you and make you feel inspired to exercise, which is vital during stressful times, even if it’s just a walk around the block. If you look good, you feel good. One of my favorite brights is hot pink. It brings a flush to the face! Be choosy about fabric and fit. Fabrics that contain some cotton along with stretch are more breathable than all-synthetic fabrics. Kickback clothing is made to fit close to the body but not tight. It may be a good idea to size up so it skims the body comfortably. Pants that have a high waist are a must. They are the most comfortable and flattering, and they don’t slide down as you move around. Also, choose a pant with a wide waistband. It holds you in and gives you a slim silhouette along with great comfort. No muffin tops here! If you just cannot get away from black, choose a black tank top and pant but pair it with a bright zip-up hoodie (or pair a brightly colored tank top with a black hoodie). Even as hot weather rolls around, we need a cute jacket handy at all times because of air conditioning and the uncertain midwestern weather. Layering is a great way to bring some color and variety into your at-home attire. I love the look of different lengths of tops layered colorfully over one another. You could also try a shirt with a low-cut back to reveal a contrasting tank underneath. Our goal right now is to look sporty-chic. This vibe will take us into summer, and we will be ready to step out in style when the time comes. One great investment this summer will be tennis shoes! Designers have come up with some fresh fabrication, colors, and patterns for these stylish and comfy shoes. No matter what else you are wearing, a pair of fun patterned sneakers will pick you up and take you almost anywhere. Personally, I love the animal print styles. Leopard and zebra print look fabulous with black yoga pants. These fun prints really kick it up a notch! Easy-to-wear long shorts with a high waist are the perfect pairing with cute sneakers and a polka-dot top this summer. Stripes and dots, along with nautical looks, continue as summer staples. As for hot color combos, what’s more fun than pink and orange? This is summer’s chic standout! If “summer” were a color combo, it would be this happy arrangement! Don’t forget that classic blue is Pantone’s color of the year. Blues are perfect for summer—turquoise and royal blue are my favorite summer colors. Enjoy some throwback trends like puffy sleeves, tied-at-the-ankle pants, and wallpaper prints. Yes, I

said wallpaper prints. Remember the wallpaper designs that were in every home in the 1960s and 1970s? This year, designers have grabbed these patterns and transformed them into beautiful, wearable prints. Unique and different from the usual summer florals, wallpaper prints offer some variety to the trend-conscious. Long print dresses with a hippie feel are terrific choices for this summer for all the same reasons that they have been popular in years past. Easy, breezy, and so romantic, these dresses go from the beach to dinner with a change of shoes. One of the most flattering looks in dresses is ruffled tiers of fabric cascading from bust to hem. This design skims over any “trouble” spots and wears so comfortably! Think swingy dresses

catching the breeze, feeling fresh and fun. If head-to-toe tiers are too much for you, try a tiered ruffled skirt with a simple white t-shirt. The look is trendy and cool. During these challenging times, staying positive is vital, and caring for yourself is as important as caring for others. Self-care includes getting dressed! You may be surprised by how much your outlook changes when your outfit makes you feel put-together. Look good for yourself every day! She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE More information at tommybahama.com July 2020

sugar and 1/4 cup of chopped nuts (optional). Sprinkle half of the chocolate mixture over the batter. Pour in the rest of the batter, and then sprinkle the rest of the chocolate mix on top (swirl a bit with a knife). Bake at 350 degrees for 30–35 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes, then remove from the pan. Best served warm. Baked Corn Casserole Mix 1 can of sweet corn with 1 can of creamed corn, 1 box of corn muffin mix (8 ounces, like Jiffy), 1 cup of sour cream, and 1/2 stick of melted butter. Bake in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Top with 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Bake for another 5 minutes. Grilled Beef Tenderloin Fold the thin end of a 5-pound beef tenderloin roast under the roast and tie (or have your butcher do this). Rub the roast with 3 Tablespoons of olive oil. Mix together 3 Tablespoons of steak seasoning (like a Monterey blend), 2 Tablespoons of dried parsley, and 1 Tablespoon of rosemary. Rub the spice blend over the tied roast. Let stand for 30 minutes. Prepare your grill for indirect (medium) heat and preheat—turn off the burner on one side. If you are planning to make a wine sauce with the drippings, put the beef in a disposable aluminum pan before grilling. Place the beef on the unlit side of the grill, close the lid, and grill for 40 minutes, turning occasionally. When the internal temperature is 125 degrees, move to the lit side of the grill and turn the grill to high. Grill uncovered for another 6–8 minutes, turning once, until the meat reaches 135 degrees (medium rare). Let stand for 5 minutes before slicing. If you used the disposable pan, now is the time to add 1 cup of red wine and 2 Tablespoons of butter to the pan. Cook for a minute or two.

Tequila and Scallops Mix together 1 teaspoon of cumin, 1 teaspoon of paprika, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Toss the mixture with 1 pound of sea scallops (about 16 scallops). Heat 1 Tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet on high heat. Cook the scallops (half at a time) for 1 minute on each side, until golden. Return all the scallops to the skillet and add 1/2 cup of tequila. Cook for 4 minutes on medium-high until the tequila has evaporated. Remove the scallops to a warm platter. Add 1 cup of chicken stock to the skillet and cook on mediumhigh for 5 minutes, until the stock is reduced by half. Add 2 Tablespoons of butter, a dash of salt and pepper, 1 teaspoon of grated lime peel, and a dash of red pepper flakes. Stir until the butter is melted. Return the scallops to the skillet and stir for another minute. Serve over cooked fettucine. Red, White, and Blue Cake Pops Mix 1 package of yellow cake mix (no pudding) with 1 cup of water, 3 eggs, and 1/2 cup of vegetable oil. Pour the mixture into a 9x13-inch greased pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Cool. Crumble the cooled cake into a large bowl. Mix in enough of a tub of prepared white frosting to get a texture that is sticky but not too smooth. Chill the mixture for 30 minutes. Shape the mixture into 1 and 1/2-inch balls. Push a lollipop stick into each one. Chill again while you prepare the coating. Melt 2 packages of white almond bark and divide into 3 bowls. Leave one bowl white. Add a few drops of red food coloring to the second bowl and a few drops of blue to the third bowl. Dip the balls into the bowls. Add sprinkles, if desired. Let set on a cookie sheet. WE

Certified Piedmontese Beef Healthier Animals, Healthier Meat

By Sarah Brown

Anthony Bourdain once said, “The food we eat says a lot about who we are.” We eat to sustain ourselves, of course, but many dishes, ingredients, or methods of preparation serve as links to our personal or family history, ethnic background, cultural affiliation, and national citizenship. From a consumer standpoint, our purchasing habits can also be a reflection of individual and societal values. Choosing to buy locally raised food brings the community together, creates important economic opportunities, provides health benefits, and helps to reduce environmental impact. Additionally, many people feel that local food tastes better and lasts longer. Since 2011, Certified Piedmontese has been providing real Nebraska beef of superior quality and flavor that is also healthier, humane, and sustainable. Certified Piedmontese provides uniquely lean, tender, and delicious beef to consumers nationwide. Kala Springer is the marketing and event coordinator for Certified Piedmontese, and she explains the difference between Piedmontese and other beef. “The Piedmontese breed of cattle is very different from the Angus that are usually used for beef production,” she says. “Piedmontese naturally have a unique genetic makeup that makes the animals more muscular. More muscle means less fat and higher protein, but the meat is still extremely tender and flavorful.” “Marbling” is the term used in the culinary world for the intramuscular fat in lean meat. The white flecks and streaks of fat have long been touted to provide more flavor and tenderness, and marbling usually serves as the standard for grading the quality of a cut of beef. However, Kala explains, more marble isn’t an absolute requirement for great texture and flavor. In Certified Piedmontese beef, high levels of marbling are not common because the breed has an inactive gene (myostatin gene) that enables them to keep creating muscle with little fat and connective tissue. These yield a beef that is lower in fat and calories, yet tender like prime-grade beef. It is common practice in the meat industry to inject animals with steroids and other hormones in an effort to promote growth and increase profits. However, Certified Piedmontese cattle are raised by ranchers who use progressive protocols, rather than steroids, growth hormones, and antibiotics, to optimize animal health. “Our cattle are raised completely naturally,” Kala relates. “Cattle are raised and handled humanly without growth hormones, steroids, or antibiotics.” The most progressive aspect of the business is that each individual Piedmontese animal is fully traceable—from the plains of western Nebraska to your plate. “We literally know the history of every animal,” states Kala. “We know when they were born, what their health history has

12

been, the animal’s diet... everything.” What advantage does that offer? “The quality is the best,” Kala continues. “The ranchers who raise these animals are committed to high-quality animal care and handling. They keep a running record of each animal’s growth and development. Based on what they’re seeing, plans are created for those animal. The animals get exactly what they need to be their healthiest.” Healthy animals produce healthier meat. “For a long time, people were told to stay away from red meat,” says Kala. “We were told to limit the amount we ate because it was higher in fat.” Initially, Certified Piedmontese beef was mostly purchased by professional chefs or by consumers who were very health-conscious. As time has passed and word about the product has spread, the customer demographic has expanded outside of those circles. Kala mentions that she’s heard from many customers (women in particular) who had stopped consuming beef in any form because eating it felt so heavy and it was hard to digest. When these customers try Certified Piedmontese beef, they are delighted to find that they can enjoy eating steak again without feeling uncomfortable for hours afterward. An eightounce portion of Piedmontese beef has approximately 52 grams of pure, clean protein. Certified Piedmontese products have already been available to customers at a couple of select local grocery retailers and online at piedmontese.com. Soon, residents of Lincoln and surrounding communities will have another option. A Labor Day weekend 2020 grand opening is planned for a Certified Piedmontese retail location at 4851 North 84th Street, in Lincoln. The shop will have fresh cuts of meat available as well as custom cuts. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide recommendations. Customers can also choose additional items, such as artisanal cheeses, seasonings, condiments, and wines, to create a most enjoyable athome dining experience. Kala is confident that, once you try Certified Piedmontese beef, you’ll never go back to eating “regular” beef again. Let’s find out! Until the opening of the new retail location, you can find Certified Piedmontese beef at piedmontese.com or at Great Plains Beef, in Lincoln. To reach them by phone, please call 800-544-1359. WE

Seasons of Life

Proactive Vs. Reactive Pre-Planned Funeral or Memorial Services

By Linda Barnes

Death happens to every one of us, but we don’t like to talk about it or even think about it, let alone plan for it. We could easily avoid contemplating our own demise and let our survivors worry about the details afterward. A kinder and more responsible approach is to devise your own plan. Your family or loved ones will thank you. The death of someone close can be devastating. Next of kin do not need the added stress of making important decisions without knowing the deceased’s wishes. In our own family, I recall a death after which the children had difficulty making good decisions in the midst of their grief. In contrast, my younger brother had made a will and communicated his wishes, in writing, even though he expected to live many long years. His fatal heart attack was not anticipated. We so appreciated his foresight in making a plan that outlined his wishes to be cremated and where his ashes were to be scattered. “Pre-planning” encompasses a variety of issues. The big ones include: Do you prefer burial or cremation? Religious services or a reception at the community center? What about cemetery plots or dispensation of ashes? The question of paying for services will also have to be considered. The answers to the big questions bring on all the smaller details. If a religious service is desired, where will it be held? A particular clergy member might be designated, along with music

or musicians. If a traditional burial is planned, desired pallbearers could be named. One of our family members, when terminally ill, provided significant details and a favorite photo for her obituary. A funeral home’s representatives are trained to help clients through the process of pre-planning. Perhaps you’re already familiar with a mortuary in your locale. If not, look online, ask friends or family for recommendations, and call to make an appointment. The costs involved may be a significant concern. Preliminary calls to local funeral homes can help compare their costs. Write down your thoughts before meeting face to face. Research the various options for financing so that you’re familiar with the choices. If there is a fun part of planning your own funeral, it could be outlining the plan for your reception or celebration. Options include everything from a traditional church luncheon to a picnic in the park. Perhaps you’d like your send-off to include symbols of your hobby or special interests. Remember, though, that pre-

planning is supposed to ease the burden on loved ones, not exert extra pressure. Therefore, big general ideas are better than minute details that could be difficult to pull off. I’m a quilter and love quilts, so I want a colorful quilt draped over my casket rather than an expensive bouquet of fresh flowers. It doesn’t matter to me which quilt—it would be better to have my children pick one that is meaningful to them. After all, besides honoring the departed, services are also meant to give comfort to loved ones. A funeral home representative may offer a pre-planning checklist of things to be done and the costs involved with each element. The plan should include (at least) transporting the body for embalming or cremation, the cost of a casket or container for ashes, charges for use of their chapel or rental of another venue, remuneration for musicians and clergy, and charges for burial or niche (a permanent resting place for an urn that contains ashes). The question of payment should be addressed. Funerals often cost at least several thousand dollars. While pre-planning does not have to include pre-payment, it is worth thoughtful consideration. Several options, each with pros and cons, are available. Funeral insurance is a policy much like life insurance, payable upon death. It might be purchased through a funeral home or an insurance company. Be sure to understand all the conditions before committing. An advantage is that, unlike a savings account or pre-need trust agreement, funeral insurance payouts may not be subject to taxes. You can also generally pay the funeral home directly for pre-planned services. Advance payment may be a good choice if you can lock in a guaranteed price. Be sure to find out whether it is refundable or transferrable if you change your mind, if you move out of town, or if the funeral home goes out of business. Another option is a pre-need trust, available through the funeral home, cremation service, or cemetery. Be sure to understand all of the terms of this financial contract; ask your attorney for advice, if needed. Even the best plan is useless if no one knows about it. Your will may not be read until after the funeral, so tell friends and family where the information can be found. They will be grateful! Good Looks

Putting a Smile on Your Face Cosmetic Dentistry Options

By Loretta McCollum

Marilyn Monroe once said, “A smile is the best makeup any girl can wear.” A truer statement has never been uttered, but not everyone is excited about smiling. Don’t let stained, crooked, or missing teeth stop you from expressing yourself! Consider cosmetic dentistry. There’s a procedure for just about everything, from whitening your teeth to implanting new ones altogether. Let’s start with tooth whitening, which is one of the simplest ways to upgrade your smile. It may take as little as one office visit to your dentist, who will bleach your teeth with a hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide solution. Your dentist may also provide you with a custom-made tray for at-home whitening. Tooth bonding is a good way to fix a defect or imperfection on a tooth. It can repair decayed or cracked teeth, close small gaps between teeth, or bring a small tooth up to size. Bonding is a quick procedure that doesn’t require any downtime. It usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes to apply the composite resin to the tooth. Good dental hygiene is important to extend the life of a bonded tooth. In addition to your daily brushing and flossing routine, you should avoid hard candy and nail-biting. Avoid anything that will stain your teeth for the first few days after the procedure. If you have a small chip in a tooth, enamel shaping or recontouring is a minimally invasive option. It can smooth rough spots

that bother your cheeks or tongue or adjust a tooth that’s shaped not quite the same as the others. It’s done with polishing tools that remove a bit of the surface for a smoother look and feel. Enamel micro-abrasion is similar to enamel shaping. This technique helps remove superficial stains and enamel irregularities. It removes the porous enamel layer, where stains get trapped. It also smooths the tooth surface. The dentist uses a pumice-like device to apply a gel that contains an acid and an abrasive compound. The results are effective and long-lasting. An advantage of both microabrasion and enamel shaping is that the mouth will not typically need to be numbed. To enhance the appearance of multiple teeth, veneers are sometimes used. Veneers are wafer-thin laminates that cover the front surface of the teeth. They can change a tooth’s color, shape, size, or length. Porcelain veneers are particularly stain-resistant and

resemble natural teeth. The dentist will make an impression of the teeth as a mold for the veneers, ensuring a good match. This procedure generally takes two visits to the dentist—one for the impression and one for the application. If you have teeth that are worn down, chipped, broken, or misaligned, or if you have gaps between your teeth, veneers may be the answer. While veneers cover the front of the tooth, a crown covers the entire tooth—it’s essentially a tooth-shaped cap. Crowns can protect weak teeth, restore broken teeth, support a tooth with a large filling, cover a dental implant, or hold a dental bridge in place. Ceramic or porcelain crowns provide the best color match to natural teeth and can last up to 15 years. As with veneers, two visits are typically needed for a crown. At the first visit, the tooth that will receive the crown is filed down, and then an impression of the tooth is made. The impression is sent to a dental lab to make the crown. In the meantime, a temporary crown is applied. When the permanent crown is ready, the dentist cements the crown in place. Some dentists can offer same-day permanent crowns because they have in-house labs—be sure to ask. Dental implants are done where teeth are missing. Dental implant surgery is the only restorative procedure that preserves the existing jawbone and stimulates bone growth. Implants feel and function like natural teeth, and they can last decades. The procedure involves surgically implanting a screw-shaped titanium rod into the jawbone. Over the following few months, the jawbone grows around the implant, creating an artificial root. Next, a connecting abutment is placed on the implant, mouth impressions are taken, and a crown is created and attached to the abutment. Most general dentists do not do implant procedures—consult a periodontist or oral surgeon to see if implants are right for you. After you’ve whitened, shaped, and strengthened your teeth, you’ll want to ensure that they’re straight. An orthodontist can help you align your teeth by applying traditional braces or the barely noticeable Invisalign straightening system. Be sure to check out the August issue of this magazine for an article on orthodontics. As you can see, you don’t have to be content with a lackluster smile. Shedding Light on Life at Home Window Treatments Bring a Better View By Robyn V. Powell

In recent months, our homes have become places to work, teach, sleep, eat, and relax. With so much time spent indoors, we look to our homes to provide many of the “feel-good” emotions we previously found when going out into the world. If being at home has you feeling stuck in a rut, it may be time for a refresh. The mere act of taking control of your own space and making something new and different out of the familiar can feel empowering! Plus, infusing new energy into living spaces is a great way to lift spirits. Interior designers tell us that one of the simplest ways to transform the way a room looks and feels is by updating window treatments. Whether your style is traditional, transitional, or contemporary, check out 2020’s trends to discover a window treatment that will breathe new life into your point of view. Investing in window treatments not only adds to your visual enjoyment, it can also increase your home’s value and function. The best way to complement your home’s interior is by working in harmony with its style. For example, homes with an open floor plan reflect the desire for flexible space and unobstructed views of the outdoors. Embrace the openness of an open floor plan and invite even more light by opting for breezy, lightweight curtains that softly frame windows while leaving the view wide open. If you desire nighttime privacy, simply install sleek automated shades. We’re seeing modern interiors finished with tailored Roman

shades that lend effortless style and an elegant ambience. One of 2020’s leading trends is mixing tone-on-tone colors and textures to create a custom, pulled-together look. Pairing your shades with draperies adds drama and dimension to a room while improving energy efficiency. An exciting development in home technology is the automated window treatment. Motorized curtains, blinds, and shades can be activated by remote control, smartphone, or voice-activated devices. If motorized options are not in your budget, you can simplify the look and function of blinds with cordless lifts. Cordless window treatments give windows a clean and modern look, are easy to operate, and are the safest choice for a child’s room or nursery. One reason that window treatments are so important is that they help protect the interior of your home by blocking harmful UV rays. Over time, rugs, furniture, and artwork exposed to sunlight will sustain

irreversible damage. Unless constructed with proper materials, even the window treatments themselves will deteriorate, becoming dull, discolored, and brittle. After going through the process of finding the window treatments that fit your windows, your budget, and your style, the last thing you want to discover is that your shades or draperies aren’t standing up to the sun! The solution to sun damage is to invest in fade-resistant window treatments. Let the amount of natural sunlight determine the proper window coverings for individual rooms. In sun-drenched rooms, opt for heavier fabrics or blackout shades to reduce light, noise, and heat. Layering various curtains and blinds gives you flexibility in controlling how much light a room receives. Plantation shutters remain a favorite among today’s homeowners, growing in popularity by 15 percent over the last year. Homeowners choose shutters for many of the same reasons that made them popular a century ago. These strong, permanent fixtures will last many years longer than traditional blinds, and their classic elegance, insulating properties, and durability make them attractive as long-term investments. Offering timeless design style and quality construction, shutters complement just about any design aesthetic and add significant appeal and value to your home. Custom interior shutters are available in a wide selection of colors and natural wood tones. Faux wood shutters are more affordable and durable, making them a good alternative to wood shutters. Resistant to moisture, they are ideal for bathrooms and kitchens. Both wood and faux wood shutters offer insulation and light control, which can save you money on energy costs. An interior designer can guide you through the options and help you create a custom look that you’ll love for years. The knowledgeable staff at your local window treatment showroom can also be a good resource. Consider custom window treatments for any windows that are not a typical size or shape. A professional can create any treatment you desire—in the exact size you need, and with a tailored fit. In these uncertain times, an investment in your home is an investment in your family’s well-being. Re-frame your view with beautiful window treatments that will boost your mood and see you through the challenges of 2020. Fresh Concept

An Attorney for Everyone How to Find the One You Need By Janette Calabro

Chances are, you’ll need an attorney for some rite of passage during your lifetime. Opening or closing a business? Getting married or divorced? Planning your estate? Need personal injury representation after a car accident? Before you search for an attorney, it’s important to understand that there are many different types of attorneys, specializing in everything from how to adopt a child to criminal law. Let’s take a look at what attorneys actually do and at what education gets them there. The words “lawyer” and “attorney” are often used interchangeably, but they don’t mean quite the same thing. Technically, a lawyer is someone who has graduated from law school. Attorneys, on the other hand, have passed the bar exam in the state of their choice and are licensed to practice law in that state. The first step in an attorney’s education is an undergraduate degree (in many cases, a designation as “pre-law,” though that is not required). Once the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is passed, the student is ready to apply for law school. To practice law as a licensed attorney, students have to attend and graduate from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) and, usually, obtain a juris doctorate degree, a generalized degree in the study of law. In addition to these seven or so years of full-time study after high school, most states require strict background screening and a grueling licensing test called the bar exam. You’ve heard the stories—tales of famous people not passing those tests the first time around. The bar exam is tough! It helps the state determine whether a lawyer is competent to practice law. Attorneys are trained to be articulate speakers, good listeners, and skilled researchers with sharp analytical skills—and they know their business. What is this business? Let’s put it this way: If you have questions about any life situation, there’s an attorney out there to handle it. For example, someone who is ticketed for driving under the influence (DUI) will probably need a criminal defense attorney who specializes in DUI cases. A criminal attorney will clarify the charges, propose the best plan of action, and represent the client in court. As you may recall from high school civics class, the United States Constitution requires that citizens be presumed innocent until proven guilty. Americans so cherish their right to the presumption of innocence that the government is required to provide an attorney to anyone who is charged with a crime but can’t afford to pay for legal advice. These clients are often referred to public defenders, whose primary job purpose is to provide legal representation to people who could not otherwise afford it. Though it’s helpful to have an expert in your corner if you are in trouble, there are many other reasons to hire an attorney. At some point in life, you may

20

want to plan your estate. An estate planning attorney can help sum up your net worth with assets such as property or savings. This type of planning helps ease doubts or uncertainties about what will happen to your assets after you die or are disabled. An estate attorney specializes in state laws concerning wills, trusts, and power of attorney. If you’re concerned that someone may contest your will, or if your situation is complicated, an estate attorney can help. If you’re buying property, a real estate attorney can litigate the whole transaction, right down to the closing. These attorneys specialize in handling the legal aspects of buying a residence or a commercial building. They’re skilled in solving issues of mortgage fraud, disclosure fraud, and subdivision or zoning laws, which could come in handy if your transaction takes a wrong turn. Small businesses may employ a corporate lawyer on staff, while corporations like banks, hospitals, insurance companies, large energy and communications companies, and biotech or large manufacturers will likely have numerous lawyers on board. They’re basically in-house legal counsel to serve the best interests of the corporation or business. Their specialties vary widely and may include such things as negotiating the acquisition of a billion-dollar company or setting up a website for a small start-up. They assist with a company’s legal rights and business contracts, the rights and responsibilities of corporate officers, international or commercial law, and trademarks, among other things. Corporate lawyers are well-versed in filing reports with government agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The word “bankruptcy” might scare you a little, but during tough economic times or in the face of unexpected medical expenses, a bankruptcy lawyer can be who you need to establish a fresh start. A bankruptcy lawyer is trained to help clients navigate court proceedings, decrease or eliminate debt, and move toward a bankruptcy claim. They provide protection from debt collectors and can offer relief from obligations that you might be unable to pay. The American Bankruptcy Institute notes that consumers who have legal representation during bankruptcy proceedings have higher success rates than those who attempted no representation. Cases

www.womensedition.com

usually end either debt-free or with a repayment plan, depending on what kind of chapter is filed. A skilled attorney does not always recommend filing for bankruptcy; often, advocating for a debt management program or a less extreme path to settle debt is the best choice. Although it’s a complicated number to pin down, an estimated 40–50 percent of marriages end in divorce. A divorce can lead to other needs, like resolving a child custody battle, establishing visitation rights, or determining child support, all of which require legal assistance from a family law attorney. Family law focuses on family relationships. If you’re planning to adopt a child, get a divorce, or settle a child custody case, hiring an attorney can bring great advantages. If you have significant assets before marriage, you might consider a prenuptial agreement. This document states each spouse’s rights (or the lack thereof) toward the other spouse’s prenuptial assets in case of divorce or death. This kind of legal document is always best written by an attorney. Unfortunately, vulnerable populations sometimes need an attorney to be an advocate. Elder law attorneys can litigate an expansive range of concerns for older, disabled, or otherwise vulnerable adults. They plan long-term health care and guardianship, as well as matters concerning Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid, and assisted living. Emotional and physical needs vary and could include things like nursing home costs, claims, and estate and gift taxes. In some unfortunate cases, vulnerable people are abused or neglected, by family members or by professional staff in an assisted living facility. Make sure your choice of attorney is someone who specializes, and has experience, in elder law.

One professional misstep can lead a client or patient into filing a malpractice lawsuit, and not just against medical doctors. Even law firms need malpractice representation at times. Malpractice lawyers litigate those lawsuits, often based on alleged negligent behavior of those providing professional services. For example, medical malpractice might be the result of errors in diagnosis or treatment, unnecessary surgery, or even aftercare that causes injury to a patient. If a claim is made, the patient must show the following in order for the claim to be considered malpractice: a violation of the standard of care, an injury caused by negligence, or an injury that resulted in significant damages. If the situation warrants legal counsel, malpractice attorneys are trained to help. Once you identify the need, how do you go about finding the right attorney? To start, ask your friends and family for recommendations. Testimonials from those you trust can be the most reliable information. If you know an attorney who practices outside your need, ask for a referral. You can also consult your local or state bar association’s attorney directory. There, you can find everything from practice areas to disciplinary records. It’s okay to ask for a free consultation. Find out how long attorneys have practiced, what their experience is with what you’re seeking, and if they’ve ever been subject to disciplinary action. If you didn’t have references for them already, just ask. Be sure that you are comfortable with this professional; after all, you’re hiring someone to represent you and your personal interests. Do what an attorney would do: Observe, gather the facts, and trust your instincts. Sources for this article included: americanbar.org, justice.gov, lawyeredu.org, and census.gov. WE

Johnson Hardware Company Showing You the World in Hardware By Kate Beiting

In 1855, travelers heading west stopped in the dusty town of Omaha to purchase supplies to outfit their wagons for the journey. They headed to Johnson Hardware Company, just past the river, to purchase wood, tools, tarps, and building supplies. They were greeted by knowledgeable folk who understood the challenges ahead. The suppliers were honest, fair, and courteous. If you walk into one of their stores today, you will find the same sound business practices that made them popular so long ago: high quality, wide variety, and great customer service. There are now five Johnson Hardware Company locations: two in Omaha, one in Grand Island, one in Lincoln, and one in Dodge Center, Minnesota. I visited the store at 13817 Industrial Road in Omaha and spoke with the store manager, Brad Slocum. There are two additional design professionals and two full-time installation technicians at this location. Corrective Eye Surgery Keeping an Eye on Your Vision

By Marge Shoemaker

The main reasons to have corrective eye surgery are the common refractive vision issues that many of us have, such as near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia (a form of far-sightedness common in middle or old age). Corrective eye surgery corrects the vision so that glasses or contact lenses are no longer needed. Some serious eye problems can also be treated with other types of eye surgery. Eye surgery is done by an ophthalmologist—a medical doctor who specializes in eye and vision care. Talk to your ophthalmologist about whether a corrective procedure is right for you. Your lifestyle and vision needs will help determine the most appropriate procedure for you. Although corrective eye surgery is not new, there are always new techniques and procedures being developed. The most widely known surgery for vision correction surgery is LASIK, which stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. Pretty easy to see why it is commonly called LASIK! This surgery reshapes the cornea based on what needs to be corrected. For example, if you are nearsighted, LASIK reduces the curvature of the cornea because it is too steep. For far-sighted patients, LASIK is used to make the cornea steeper. Astigmatism is an imperfection in the curve of the cornea or lens that makes objects both far away and up close look blurry. LASIK corrects astigmatism by reshaping portions of the cornea and smoothing them out.

24

Other types of LASIK have been developed. With wavefrontguided LASIK, an excimer laser is programmed before surgery to match the patient’s prescription. A map of the cornea’s surface is created before surgery. This procedure is showing promise in reducing side effects, such as problems with night vision and contrast sensitivity, that can happen after corrective eye surgery. During Epi-LASIK, a small device cuts a flap into the cornea, which helps lift the cornea away so the laser can reshape it. This helps the surgery go faster and is more comfortable for the patient. Probably the second most commonly known cornea reshaping surgery is PRK, which stands for photorefractive keratectomy. With this procedure, surface cells on the cornea are removed, and then a laser reshapes the cornea. The difference between PRK and LASIK is that LASIK reshapes the cornea underneath a flap while PRK reshapes the eye on the surface.

www.womensedition.com

LASIK generally heals faster than PRK, but recovery time for either procedure is pretty short. With LASIK, most people can return to work and drive the day after surgery. PRK patients may need a few days for their corneal cells to regrow. For several weeks or months after laser eye surgery, patients may experience blurry vision and dry eyes or see a glare or halos around lights. Patients need regular follow-up visits to check their vision and eye health. For people with severe far- or nearsightedness, phakic intraocular lenses may be an option. In this procedure, special contact lenses are surgically implanted inside the eye, over the lens. The procedure in which the natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens is called refractive lens exchange (RLE). Freeing yourself from glasses or contacts may be a relief, but it’s not the only reason to undergo eye surgery. Laser surgery or a process called cryopexy (freezing) can repair retinal tears or detachments. Retinal detachment is diagnosed with ultrasonography or an instrument that lets the doctor view the back of the eye. Recovery after surgery can take several months, and a second surgery may be needed. Surgery may also be recommended to treat glaucoma, a disease that damages the optic nerve. Glaucoma usually happens when fluid builds up and creates ocular hypertension—that is, excess pressure inside the eye. It is diagnosed after a complete eye exam that examines eye pressure, eye drainage, the optic nerve, and peripheral vision. Glaucoma damage is permanent and cannot be reversed. However, surgery and medication can help stop further damage. Two types of laser surgery are used to treat glaucoma. Trabeculoplasty stimulates the eye’s drainage system to reduce intraocular pressure. With iridotomy, a laser creates a tiny hole in the iris to help fluid drain from the eye. Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eye, caused by poorly controlled blood sugar levels. This condition is often diagnosed with an eye exam during which the pupil is dilated to give the doctor a better view of the eye. Diabetic retinopathy can be treated surgically. If you’re having eye trouble or are just tired of using corrective lenses, surgery might be the best answer for you! Make an appointment with your ophthalmologist to learn about your treatment options. Sources for this article included: aao.org, mayoclinic.org, and my.clevelandclinic.org. WE

Feeling Off-Kilter?

Find Balance With Oola Coaching By Janette Calabro

We’ve all heard that the key to a good life is balance. It’s a popular saying because it’s true! How many of us are actually doing the work that’s necessary to find that balance? I know, I know, we’re too busy juggling life to make the time. Certified Oola life coach Christine Coash wants to help us find the path to balance by defining the goals and dreams we are working toward. Luckily for us, she has the training and life skills to do exactly that. What is Oola? It is finding balance in an unbalanced world. In fact, that is the title of a book published in 2012 by the original “OolaGuys,” Dave Braun and Troy Amdahl. They traveled the country in a 1970s Volkswagen bus, talking to people about their dreams. “The whole concept of this is to spread Oola,” says Chris. “When people have dreams, when they’re working toward or living a dream, they’re creating more balance in their lives.” The OolaGuys collected people’s dreams on stickers, which they used to decorate the bus. “They would hand somebody a sticker and a marker and say, ‘Write down your dream.’ More than half the people would look at them and ask, ‘What do you mean?’ That’s because 50 percent of us aren’t setting goals–we’re simply surviving. When you think of it that way, it’s no wonder we’re so out of control and out of balance in so many facets of our life.” Oola is a word derived from the expression “ooh-la-la,” and it means a state of awesomeness. It means more than just a life of balance, it means that you’re growing in seven key areas—fitness, finance, family, field, faith, friends, and fun. If you give it some thought, you could probably come up with a dream sticker or two for each of those seven areas. “The concept of Oola is to move you in a direction where you have a sense of purpose and a sense of calm,” Christine explains. “You’re reducing stress because you’re focusing on what’s important to you. We live in an unbalanced word, and Oola is the process of creating more balance in your life.” Christine warns that you have to be very honest with yourself before you can set goals and move forward. “You have to know where you are before you know where you can go.” She wants to help you on that journey. “I am taking new clients,” says Christine, though her visits are now video chats via Zoom instead of the in-person coffee sessions she prefers. “I am also in the process of taking Oola from a private, one-on-one coaching business into a corporate training program to help improve productivity and longevity for employees and employers. I expect the program to be ready to go by July 1.” Personal coaching offers different programs to

26

choose from. You can meet with Christine for a single session if you have a specific goal you’d like to discuss. A three-week program will move you toward finding your dreams with an actual plan. Christine also offers a more in-depth program that lasts 10 weeks. No matter which program you choose, you’ll take advantage of the online module, workbook, personal assignments, and a follow-up meeting with Christine to wrap everything up. Christine is also a Jenny Craig business owner with six stores. She’s been a teacher and coach there for 20 years and was mentored by Jenny Craig herself. “She is an amazing woman,” Christine says. “One thing she taught me is to be responsible for your own behavior and bettering your life. My advice to clients is twofold: Be grateful and have faith. To live an Oola life, you need to find your truth and you need to live big.” Christine’s passion for helping others improve their own lives shines through in her coaching philosophy. “When people think back on their relationship with me, I don’t want them to think about me,” she concludes. “They should think about how they were empowered to reach their goals. When I’m coaching, it’s never about me. It’s about them.” Reach out to Christine Coash through the Oola Facebook page or the website oolalife.com. Just click on certified coaches (select Nebraska coaches), and her contact information and bio will pop up in the international directory. To reach her by phone, call 402759-6008. If you want to live a more balanced life but need some direction, let Christine show you the way! She is ready and waiting to help you see where you are and decide where you want to go. WE

Sunrooms and Screened Porches Enjoy the Outdoors—From Indoors!

By Anne Yankus

It’s wonderful to be able to enjoy your yard and the outdoors in the warmer weather, but don’t you wish you could enjoy it more even when it’s cold, or rainy, or buggy? You can, with a four-season room! A four-season room is a type of sunroom that is encased in glass, so you can enjoy beautiful views of outdoors all year long! Since it’s designed to be comfortable and protected from the elements during all four seasons, a four-season room can be used for virtually anything, adding square footage to your home. Whether you like the idea of a cozy family room, a sunny home office, a relaxing spa room, a quiet reading room, or even a way to feel like you’re having breakfast on the patio without having to worry about pests, a four-season room can get the job done. Simpler to build than a traditional sunroom, a four-season room can be constructed as a new home addition or by converting your existing attached deck, patio, or porch. Many home contractors have experience with this type of job; some companies specialize in sunrooms and four-season rooms. Ask friends or neighbors who have this type of addition who they worked with and what the process was like. One of the biggest things to consider is what kind of windows you want in your four-season room—after all, the walls are essentially made of glass. There are many types of windows to choose from, and all have different appeal. Hinged windows come in two types: awning style, which hinges from the top, keeps rain out, and lets hot air escape; and casement style, which hinges from the side and is great for ventilation and allowing the breeze in. Sliding windows, as the name implies, open by sliding horizontally, which allows you to maximize your window space with an unobstructed view. For the very best views, you’ll want some large windows that don’t open. Bay and bow windows are large, fixed windows that can extend from floor to ceiling and offer the most expansive, seamless views and sunlight. With all those windows, you may be wondering about climate control. It is no small feat to keep a glassed-in room cool and comfortable in the summer and warm and toasty in the winter. Since four-season rooms are often additions or converted porches, they can be difficult to run ducts to and attach to your home HVAC system. Fortunately, HVAC designers have devised a solution: ductless mini-splits. This type of portable heating and cooling unit is split into indoor and outdoor units that are connected by a just couple of pipes, wires, and a drain. Even if your four-season room is mostly windows, the indoor unit of the mini-split is small enough that it can be professionally installed virtually anywhere.

28

For homeowners who are looking for a less involved (and less expensive) way to enjoy the outdoors without the rain and bugs, a screened porch might be the best solution. Screened porches are great for having an outdoor space for your family that’s bug-free and protected from rain and direct sunlight. It can be a safe play area for children, a second family room, a room for entertaining guests, or a place to spend some quiet time alone. Just like choosing window types for your fourseason room, choosing what type of screen you want for your screened porch is essential. There are several types on the market, including aluminum, copper, brass, fiberglass, bronze, and stainless steel. There is also the option of retractable screens. Though more expensive than a traditional fixed screen, a retractable screen can eliminate the need for a door, make your porch a convertible open-air deck, or connect two porches to create larger or smaller areas. Like four-season rooms, screened porches can be used for a variety of purposes. Adding electrical elements to a screened porch is easy for a professional. This can allow you to turn the space into a movie theater or add a ceiling fan for those windless summer days. Simple ceiling lights aren’t uncommon, but you can also add a little decoration by using string lights or paper lanterns as your primary light source. If you’re planning to leave the lights on into the night, be sure to invest in energysaving LED lighting. Whether you want a big four-season room to enjoy year-round or a relaxing screened porch to share with family and friends from spring through fall, having a seasonal sunroom is worth what you put into it! A Little Respect Thanks, Mom and Dad “All I’m askin’ is for a little respect.”—Aretha Franklin My mom, Anne, loved Aretha. That song hit the charts in 1967, when I was 12 years old. What a time in our lives that was! I had two older sisters, ages 13 and 15, and three younger brothers, who were nine, seven, and five. Needless to say, my mom had her hands full. My dad, Al, was an entrepreneur, trying to bring in enough money to put food on the table for the eight of us. They were both such hard-working people, but they found the time to teach us about respect for everyone…and I mean everyone. “We are all equal in the fact that we are all different. We are all the same in the fact that we will never be the same. We are united by the reality that all colors and all cultures are distinct and individual. We are harmonious in the reality that we are all held to this earth by the same gravity. We don’t share blood, but we share the air that keeps us alive.” —C. JoyBell C. Over the years, I have seen the common courtesy of respect slowly begin to fade away. I started to notice that there were very few instances of “please” and “thank you” floating around. I saw everyone in such a rush that we would interrupt or talk

32

By Janet Van deWalle

over each other, cutting each other off in conversation. We had gotten out of the habit of treating others with respect. “Respect is how to treat everyone.” —Richard Branson Knowing that the only person I can change is myself, I decided I would begin working on me. When I stepped back and took a look at me, I realized that I had become a person that Mom and Dad wouldn’t recognize. I have my husband, Manny Chavez, to thank for calling me out on this. Manny is a 20-year Navy veteran. In the military, their lives depend on respecting each other and trusting each other to have one another’s backs. He had the guts to call me out…for my own good. “Being honest may not get you a lot of friends, but it’ll always get you the right ones.”—John Lennon I will admit that it has not been an easy journey. Taking a good, hard look at who you are, who you have become, what detours you have taken in your life, is a challenge, but I know that Mom and Dad would recognize me now! “Never forget your parents. They are the reason why you are and who you are.”—Anonymous

Change Happens How to Help Kids Handle It There have been a lot of changes since I last wrote a column. The seasons have changed from spring to summer. The weather has changed almost daily: rain to snow, heat to cold to heat again. Trees leaf out, flowers bloom, and grass grows. Change in most parts of the country is constant…expected. It keeps us alert and aware of what is happening. Change can be challenging, but change is good. It teaches us to cope and adapt. Those are important skills to have in life. Mom taught me to accept change by example. We moved nearly every year from first grade through high school…mostly in the summer, but not always. Mom didn’t make a big deal of it; it’s just what we did. Dad got transferred; we moved. Two friends of mine have both had major changes in their lives recently. Laura’s a single mom, working from home after leaving a position that required long hours and some traveling. “Working from home has benefits,” she acknowledges. “My expenses for childcare, transportation, and clothing have gone down.” The problem? The kids think she’s available just because she’s home. Laura schedules her work before the kids (who have never been early risers) are up. “By then, I can spend time with them,” she adds. They decide as a family what outings to take or which activities to do. “I have time to really get to know my kids,” she says. “I was amazed at how creative and inventive they can be. When I have a project to finish, they entertain themselves with positive activities.”

By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS

Jane and John also both recently started working from home. “We plan our time together, but we also plan time apart,” Jane explains. “It’s not any different in that respect than when we were both at the office.” The difference comes when the kids are home. They work as a family to solve problems. The kids have their activities to be considered, just as their parents do. “We plan family nights when we play games and talk. It’s enlightening to see the extent of their knowledge and their slant on things.” Both comment on how much they’ve learned while spending more quality time with their kids and remark on how their kids think outside the box and solve problems. “I wasn’t sure I’d like us sharing work space at home,” Jane recalls, “but it got us out of a rut. We’ve developed a sense of when we need time to ourselves. The kids feel it, too. It’s a new level of respect.” Laura agrees. “They know they have a say in how we spend our time,” she remarks. “It makes everyone more agreeable—compatible.” How you handle change has an effect on how the kids handle change. The skills and attitudes you help them learn now will stay with them into adulthood. Remember, kids are people, too. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Transmission Trouble? How to Tell and What to Do

By Brennan Hallock

Your transmission is essential to your vehicle—you can’t drive anywhere without it. You may not know too much about its maintenance, since it’s a part of the car that is generally serviced by a professional, not at home. What’s important for any driver to know is how to tell if your transmission needs attention. Let’s start with an overview of what the transmission is and how it works. In the most basic sense, your vehicle’s transmission is what “transmits” the right amount of power from the engine to the wheels. This moves you forward (or backward) and drives you to your destination. It determines how much power is being transmitted by using gears in a similar fashion to what you see on a bicycle—the higher the gear, the faster your car will go. Just like on a bicycle, if you try to start in a gear that’s too high, it will be very difficult to get moving. If you are moving fast in a gear that’s too low, the drag of the gear will act as a brake and slow the vehicle down. Most cars nowadays have an automatic transmission, which shifts gears for you. Instead of manually shifting gears with a clutch, an automatic transmission has what is called a torque converter. This senses when your vehicle is going fast enough to shift up (or slow enough to shift down) and moves automatically to the next highest (or next lowest) gear. Your transmission works behind the scenes when everything is going right. However, like any other part of a vehicle’s engine, it can malfunction or wear down over time. Detecting transmission problems early can save you thousands of dollars, as transmission repairs can be costly. If you catch them early enough, mechanics are often able to make minor adjustments that will considerably prolong the life of your transmission. There are several signs that might indicate transmission trouble. The most classic warning sign is a refusal to switch gears. If your car won’t shift, there’s generally only one potential culprit—the transmission. This problem may first appear as grinding and shaking, as the vehicle struggles to shift gears. You may also experience slipping gears. This is scary and dangerous while you’re driving, and you should go directly to a repair shop for help. You may first notice this problem as trouble getting the car out of park and into gear in the first place. If you do happen to drive a vehicle with a manual transmission, keep an eye out for a dragging clutch. A clutch that struggles to work is an indication of a problem with more than just the clutch. If you think you might have a transmission problem, try running the car in neutral. If it makes weird noises while in neutral, it’s a sure sign that something is going wrong with the transmission. Also, take the car out of the garage to look at the floor where you usually park. If you see drips of a red, sweet-

34

smelling fluid, you most likely have a transmission leak. There are a few more general signs that could mean transmission trouble but could also indicate other problems. A burning smell can be caused by many different things. One possibility is that your transmission is overheating because the fluid level is too low or the fluid is just too old. Humming sounds from the engine are always a bad sign, whether they are caused by a faulty transmission or not. You should always have them checked out by a mechanic. Of course, there’s always the check engine light. When that dreaded light pops up, it could mean almost anything is wrong with the car, including transmission problems. It’s always a sign that you should take your car to a mechanic for further investigation. To help prolong the life of your transmission, it is smart to have it maintained regularly. It’s vital to have sufficient transmission fluid in your vehicle at all times. If you notice it leaking, take your car in immediately. Otherwise, have your fluids checked when you have your oil changed. When you should replace your transmission fluid is a matter of debate and can depend on your vehicle, but most mechanics agree it doesn’t need to be done very often. Some sources say about every 50,000 miles, some say as infrequently as every 150,000 miles. If you need to have your transmission evaluated or repaired, your regular mechanic will likely be able to help you. Transmission specialists can handle the complexities of modern, computerized transmissions and ensure you are getting the best repairs for your money. Positive Perspective

Thinking Outside the Box Change Can Be Scary! I recently came across a book I couldn’t resist: “Change Is Good…You Go First,” by Mac Anderson and Tom Feltenstein. What a title! I picked it right up and bought it. It’s a very quick read that talks about how resistant most of us are to making changes in our lives, in our relationships, in our families, in our businesses. I know that I was one of these people for many, many years. “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” —John F. Kennedy I remember being proud of the fact that I “knew everything” in regard to Women’s Edition. After all, I had been doing things one way for decades. Part of the reason that I was so confident was that the way we did things, frankly, had always worked. We helped small businesses target you, our readers, on a consistent, monthly basis. Then, the virus hit. Suddenly, small businesses everywhere were scrambling…including us and all of our advertisers. “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” —Alan Watts Erin Lanza, our Art and Editorial Director, began working from home because her nine-year-old daughter couldn’t go back to

By Janet Van deWalle

school. Tiffanie Gregory, the Operations Manager in our Lincoln office, followed suit. I sat in the office with Roxy Orr, my Operations Manager for 32 years, and we thought about our customers. How could we help all these small business owners? It was time to think outside the box. “A small business is an amazing way to serve and leave an impact on the world you live in.” —Nicole Snow We came up with a nearly unthinkable solution: Stop the presses. It was scary! In the publishing world, if you do not publish an issue, it can be the beginning of the end. What we knew, however, was that the last thing any of our advertisers wanted in their mailbox was another bill. We chose not to publish our May 2020 issue. “If you can’t pay your bills, it has a really tough effect on your mental state.” —Andrew Yang Well, it worked. Last month, we came out with a combined May/ June issue that is printed, distributed, and, once again, working for our advertisers. It was scary, but you know what? We helped our customers, who bring this magazine to you, our readers, every single month (well, almost every month). Please thank them by supporting their businesses. WE
