Publisher’s Notes

Tirade of Appreciation Happy Thanksgiving to all! I have decided to go on a “tirade of appreciation” this entire month. I have made a conscious decision to recognize, on a moment-bymoment basis, everything that I appreciate in my life. Sometimes, I will say it out loud; other times, I will simply make a mental note of it. Appreciation and gratitude are two very powerful emotions and energies. Think about it: It is impossible to be negative when these two energies are coming forth from us. We cannot hold two opposing feeling tones at the same time. By focusing on what I am appreciative of, what I am grateful for, I will be a more pleasant person to be around. I will be joyful. I will be calmer. I will attract more people and situations into my life that bring me joy. Have you ever found yourself waking up on the “wrong side” of the bed? As the morning begins, you spill your coffee, you match up to all the worst drivers in the city, your coworkers come in with a chip on their shoulder…by the end of the day, all you want to do is crawl back into bed. I admit I’ve been doing this more often than not over the past couple of months. Are there “legitimate” excuses for my mood? Absolutely! Is this “vibe” doing me any good? We all know the answer to that. I decided I would head back to basics. What a great month to change: Thanksgiving month! It will be my Touchstone Month, the month I decided to turn things around. So I am putting out a “challenge” to our readers: Let’s all take a deep breath and begin to notice the things that we appreciate in our lives. Some are easy—our kids, grandkids, spouses. Others can be more challenging—our bosses, coworkers, customers. It all begins with a single decision: Today, I’m going to look for things that make me feel good when I see them. Turn on some music that feels good when you listen to it. Take it moment by moment. What I am talking about is creating a new habit and pattern. It takes 21 days to develop a new habit. Let’s make November the month we decide to be appreciative and grateful. I know that this decision has the power to change all of our lives for the better. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around, life will have evolved into a whole lot more joy. We will be surrounded by a multitude of people and situations that make us smile. Life is good. Have a GREAT MONTH!

Beautiful Fall Options Nature and Fashion Embrace Our Wardrobe! By Holly Bell

Fall is my favorite time of the year. It’s as if everything leading up to it is an appetizer and fall is the dessert! Even though we may groan a bit when the cold rushes in, we love the Midwest and its gorgeous seasons. Perfect cool temperatures, the beautiful autumn colors, and the bountiful harvest make it the best time to embrace everything, including your wardrobe! The hottest color of this season is powerful red. One of the great things about red is that there is a hue that is perfect for everyone. From brilliant orange-reds to deep wines and everything in between, everyone can wear some tone of red. Match your lip color to the tone that you are wearing to look ultra-chic. For a little drama, go for an all-over monochromatic look, or choose an unexpected accessory such as statement red boots! You will be the center of admiration wearing a red dress in a sea of black (which is always the safe choice). If you’re not comfortable in head-to-toe red, opt for an eye-popping red handbag or scarf to reveal your inner fashionista. Faux fur and leather, along with the genuine articles, continue to be popular this year. Faux leather is so hard to distinguish from the real thing, but the price difference is substantial. Leather pants, skirts, the ever-popular moto jacket, and even dresses will be fun and warm to wear this fall and winter. Fur vests will keep us warm, along with fur-trimmed everything, from gloves to jackets to hats to the especially cozy lining of coats. Designers are also having fun with details for fall 2017. Buttons are being used for decorative purposes rather than utilitarian. Buttons will embellish the sides of skirts and pants, along with other creative uses like extra buttons on your double-breasted coat. As you may have noticed in the stores, embroidery is everywhere. It embellishes the shoulders of dresses with a big red rose or is sprinkled down the front of shirts and tops. It adds an opulent detail and can be fun to wear, but I wouldn’t buy too much of this trend, as it may just be a short-lived one. Designers are crushing on velvet this season. I think everyone will embrace this trend, as it has been a while since we have enjoyed the feel of this super-soft, stretchy fabric. Feel like a star in glitter this year! As seen on television award shows, all-over glitter is glorious. If that’s too much for you, try a fabric accented with metallic thread for a slightly tamer look. Shoulder pads are coming back strong this year in coats and tailored jackets. Don’t worry—we’re not talking about “Dynasty” shoulder pads, we are talking about gentle shaping of the shoulders. Personally, I think they make a flattering silhouette on most everyone. Belts are going back to wider widths again, with a little 1980s retro feel. Belts are worn around the waist or

6

www.womensedition.com

a little higher to accentuate the narrowest part of the body. When you think of fall, you think of plaid. That ’70s plaid is back again (we never stopped loving it!). Black and white checks in every size, done in menswear cuts, will satisfy tailored fashionistas. For the girly girl, winter florals will abound, along with lace and billowing sleeves. For the sporty woman, denim is forever, but there are new options this season for wearing this versatile fabric. Denim jumpsuits, coats, and dresses, along with the beloved denim skirt, will be among your fall choices. Who says we can’t be a tailored girl one day, a girly girl the next, and a sporty girl the day after that? Variety is the spice of life! Hemlines are longer for fall. That is not to say that you can’t still wear your short skirts with leggings and boots, but longer lengths are elegant for fall. Longer hemlines are most flattering when they fall around the calf, showing the slimmest part of the leg. Before it gets too cold, these longer skirts are perfect with bare legs and platform sandals. And you can’t beat the coziness of a long skirt worn with leggings and tall boots in the cold. You look and feel best when you are essentially YOU, whether your style is sophisticated, elegant, refined, powerful, classic, womanly, funky, glamorous, tailored, casual, or a mix of all of the above. The most important fashion secret is to feel good in what you are wearing. Your look reflects your personal style and individuality. As we welcome cooler temperatures, let’s look forward to a fresh, vibrant, and colorful fall season. Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE For more information, visit www.charliebcollection.com November 2017

Festive Expressions

Light Up Your Landscape!

By Sarah Brown

Inviting and attractive green spaces can be found everywhere— from homes in neighborhoods all around the city, to office parks and places of public gathering. And every time you see a really eye-catching outdoor space, it was likely created by an expert landscape designer and a team of professionals. Landscape designers often collaborate with professionals in related fields such as architecture, soils and civil engineering, surveying, landscape contracting, and botany. But when the blossom-laden trees of spring and the lush green lawns of summer give way to the sparkle of winter frost and a dusting of snow, where is a landscape designer to be found? If you’re David Hastreiter with Festive Expressions (a part of Pro-Scapes Landscape Development and Management), you’ll be putting your expert landscape design skills to good use on holiday lighting displays and customized original outdoor decoration. A native Nebraskan, David attended the University of Nebraska—Lincoln, completing a bachelor’s degree in horticulture and landscape design. He had been providing low-voltage landscape lighting for outdoor living spaces since 1982, and Pro-Scapes opened in 1999. David is not just the owner—he’s fully involved in all aspects of the business, which builds and maintains landscapes for residential and commercial clients. Their services include all manner of landscape maintenance, from pruning bushes and laying mulch to constructing or renovating a full backyard retreat. They also do seasonal yard cleanups to prepare your yard for the beginning or end of the growing season. David and his team work hard to create outdoor spaces that are functional, enjoyable, and sustainable. Holiday decorating traditions place a particularly specialized focus on outdoor lighting for homeowners and business owners alike. Thirteen years ago, a family friend of David’s suggested adding holiday lighting to their seasonal business. David recognized the value of a single business that could provide the service of outdoor holiday lighting combined with the expert skills of landscape design. A few years later, Festive Expressions was born. Too often, David notes, the hassle of holiday decorating can put a damper on a homeowner’s enjoyment of the season. Instead, he suggests, let him and his team at Festive Expressions do the decorating for you. You can stay in the comfort of your home, enjoying family or other guests, without ever having to go outside in the cold and risk climbing up a ladder to illuminate your eaves. Although safety is paramount, that’s not the only advantage to having trained installers put up your outdoor holiday decorations. The better the installers are trained, the less likely you are to end up with property damage. Festive Expressions uses the best products on

12

the market to be sure that their methods of holiday light installation are property-friendly. In addition to lighting of all kinds, they also offer beautiful wreaths and greenery. The company provides proactive maintenance and takedown for everything they install, allowing you to keep your time and focus on your family and personal enjoyment of the season. When you think of landscape design, what usually comes to mind first are sunny days in the middle months of the year. Things like manicured bushes, vibrant flower beds, strategically-placed trees, and perhaps a water feature are all typical points of home and commercial outdoor space design. It’s easy to forget that a thoughtful design plan should accommodate all seasons—from the bright, sunny months of spring and summer, to the shorter, darker days of winter. The implement of low voltage lighting system to light an outdoor space is more important than you might think. Outdoor lighting design should be an integral part of the landscaping in both commercial and residential spaces. In addition to being an obvious safety feature, good lighting improves the overall functionality and enjoyment of the space, allowing the use and attractiveness of the outdoors to extend well beyond typical daylight hours. Landscape lighting can be so much more than illuminating a walkway or lighting an entry door. If done right, it can enhance the appeal and appearance of any space throughout all seasons—even winter. David loves many things about his business but feels especially rewarded by developing long-term relationships with satisfied clients. Outdoor holiday decorating or year-round yard care can feel like a chore to many people. The team at Festive Expressions and Pro-Scapes Landscape Development and Maintenance is committed to eliminating that hassle on a schedule and budget that work for you. They will tailor their services specifically to your site, personal requests, and plant requirements. David offers free estimates, which can be scheduled by calling 402-421-2204 or sending a message to david@pro-scapes.net. Pro-Scapes Landscape Development and Maintenance is located at 604 Calvert Street, in Lincoln. For more information, visit pro-scapes.net. WE

A Woman’s Work

Songs of Life

Living the Music, One Song at a Time By Sharon Knierim

In movies and most television programming, dialogue and action alike are accompanied by some kind of music. It is this musical accompaniment that often sets the tone for the movie or program. At the very least, the mood of a scene can easily be expressed by the melody going on in the background. In some presentations, the music seems to be a major character itself. Sometimes, the music can exude a certain mood or emotion when a particular character is on display. In psychological thrillers and monster movies, we hear and are often entranced by tense chords signifying to us that something dreadful is about to happen…that the surprise around the corner is not going to be a happy one. Is the main character in grave danger? We cannot resist riding along on an adventure in total suspense and something close to “film fear.” Many of us watch these showings with blankets over our heads or with one eye closed. Still, we want to know what will happen next to our hero or heroine. If you are the romantic type, you may find yourself entranced by the haunting melodies of love songs and sentimental songs phrased just perfectly to make our hearts beat at an unnatural rate. This is the kind of entertainment that prompts us to grab extra tissues.

Then, of course, there are those melodies which stay with us for a lifetime. These are the songs that help define who we are and how we view ourselves and others. They become a window on our world. Some songs and pieces of music help us bring back a particular memory or a particular time in our lives. Do we recall the first songs we learned in childhood? Yes, we do. They were always simple and happy songs with cheery thoughts, telling nice stories or describing lovable characters. Our first song was “Little Ducky Duddle,” and I still know all the words to it…which is quite an accomplishment for a woman who can’t remember what she did five minutes ago. Reliving our younger days of dating and courting makes us remember romantic songs, usually theme songs from a blockbuster movie such as “Love Story” or “Romeo and Juliet.” Earlier generations remember the crooners, who sang about

human emotions and were the hit of their day. In my generation, there were plenty of anti-war songs being played on the radio and jukebox. These songs, too, are memorable, though the memories they evoke may not be our most pleasant. These songs may transport us to a time in our lives when confusion and bitterness were very common. If you like classical music, you are in good company. We are so fortunate to have with us today so many of the musical treasures from hundreds of years ago. Many of these compositions are filled with chords and melodies which later became the foundation for much of modern music. Yesterday’s rich scores can be found in many of our contemporary tunes. Music can also be a great motivator—and not just to keep us energized while we exercise. When our children were school-aged, they were terrible morning procrastinators. As I flipped pancakes and stirred oatmeal, I extemporaneously made up and belted out country and western tunes. I was not particularly fond of this style of music, and the children were even less enthusiastic. This daily practice encouraged them to hurry and got them out the door on time! Particularly engaging are the songs of the holidays, which are typically tender or silly. As we approach Thanksgiving, everyone tries to sing through “Over the River and Through the Woods” at least once. “We Gather Together” is also a song reflecting the Thanksgiving spirit and mood. Both songs remind us of the importance of being together. Of course, the ultimate in shared songs (particularly holiday songs) is the Christmas carol, which is so often sung as a group. Do you wonder how many holiday songs have been written and sung about this last great holiday of the year? The supply seems endless, and the variety makes it difficult to choose a favorite. Whether you hum or sing or whistle these musical themes, many of them inspire us to pause and take a look at the fleeting year and to remember what is good in life. Songs about hope and love and a snowman named Frosty will stay with us forever. We will never run out of songs. What we sing about is up to us, but they are always songs of life. What kind of song might be written for or about you? WE

Enlightened Living LED Lighting Brings Out the Best in Your Home

By Robyn V. Powell

When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, it changed the world. A century later, the emergence of LED technology has brought the potential to once again fundamentally change the future of lighting. Thanks in large part to greater energy efficiency, longer bulb life, and improved quality of light, LED technology is on everyone’s radar—from homeowners to multinational corporations. Most of us are aware of LED lighting, but many of us hesitate to make the switch because we’re not sure how it differs from conventional lighting or why it may be a better choice. Let’s throw a little light on the subject to illuminate your understanding. LEDs have swept the lighting marketplace for many reasons, most notably their extended lifespans, reduced energy consumption, and lower maintenance requirements. The number one reason for choosing LED lighting is energy efficiency. LED stands for “light-emitting diode,” which is a long-lasting, highly efficient form of lighting. About 80–90 percent of the energy used by an LED bulb goes directly into light. (Compare that with incandescent bulbs, which use only 10 percent of their energy on light and waste the rest on heat.) So, how do LED lights work? As explained by Energy Star, “an electric current passes through a microchip, illuminating tiny light sources we call LEDs, and the result is visible light.” LED bulbs can provide the same amount of light as incandescent bulbs, but

they use up to 85 percent less power, helping you save on your electricity bill without compromising the amount of light. Until 2012, a large barrier to widespread adoption of LED technology was price, but increased competition and lower production costs have lowered prices and improved the consumer’s return on investment. LED bulbs are more expensive up front, but it’s a sound investment. In some cases, consumers have saved as much as several hundred dollars in just one year. The extended life of an LED bulb (30,000 to 50,000 hours versus 1,000 hours for a typical incandescent bulb) means the LED bulb is replacing many incandescent bulbs that you won’t have to purchase. Because LEDs are small and directional, they are ideal for accent or task lighting—on countertops, for example, to aid cooking and reading recipes. This type of light distribution also makes LED bulbs good choices for recessed down lights in kitchens, hallways, bathrooms, and commercial settings. Until recently, one of the biggest drawbacks of LED lighting had been color. Traditional lighting casts a warm yellow glow ›››

that early LED lights could not match. LEDs do not naturally emit white light, which is why they have only recently been used for general purpose lighting. To produce a white light, different colors of LEDs can be combined, or the LEDs can be covered with a material that changes the color. These improved technologies make current LED lighting difficult to distinguish from the familiar warmth of conventional lighting. To ensure that the lighting you choose is the right color and brightness for the intended location, consult a lighting expert. Interior designers and lighting showroom professionals are excellent resources for design application and creating lighting effects. Retrofitting conventional lighting sources to LED is possible in many instances. The dimensions of LED bulbs are similar to standard incandescent bulbs, and they can often fit in the lamps and fixtures you already have. However, LED bulbs can be heavier than incandescent bulbs, so make sure your fixture can support the additional weight. Also, some LED bulbs are not suitable for fully enclosed fixtures; check the label. You may currently enjoy the ambience created by dimming an incandescent bulb. Don’t worry—you can replicate the mood with LED bulbs, if you know which bulb to choose. Dimmer switches generally work by adjusting the amount of voltage the bulb receives, and any old incandescent bulb will do. Light-emitting diodes cannot technically be dimmed (they can only be ON or OFF), but manufacturers have worked around this problem with circuitry designed to make an LED bulb look like it’s dimming. These bulbs are generally labeled “dimmable LEDs.” If you want to use an LED bulb with a dimmer switch, these are the ones to look for. LED lights are free of toxic materials like the mercury found in most lightbulbs and are 100 percent recyclable. And since they last so much longer than incandescent bulbs, one LED bulb can save the material and production of 25 incandescent lightbulbs—a big step toward a greener planet. The future for LED lighting is bright. As competition drives the industry forward, light quality will continue to improve while energy consumption and costs will continue to drop. Check with a lighting designer about how to bring LED technology into your home. Sources for this article included: energy. gov, nema.org, and energystar.gov. WE

Good Looks

Here’s Lookin’ at You, Kid Lasting Beauty By Loretta McCollum

Today’s women lead hectic lives. Our time is precious, and we spend a significant amount of that time every day ensuring that we look our best by powdering, plumping, thickening, lengthening, defining, tweezing, and trimming. No matter how much effort we put forth, life gets in the way. We get caught in the rain, and our eye makeup turns into grimy black streaks. We nick ourselves shaving our legs and somehow manage to stain our new white blouse. We take our glasses off to apply eyeliner and realize a five-year-old could have done a better job. Frustrating, right? It doesn’t need to be. Wouldn’t it be great to wake up and look polished without having to fumble with pencils, brushes, and sponges? Permanent makeup, also known as cosmetic tattooing, allows us to do just that. It’s a process in which tinted pigment is deposited into the top skin layer by trained technicians. It can thicken, darken, and define eyebrows. Eyeliner can be permanently drawn. It’s an excellent choice for applying lip liner and lip color, helping to correct uneven lips, preventing lipstick bleeding, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles, and giving the appearance of fuller lips. It’s especially great if you’re involved in sports or have eyesight issues, unsteady hands, or cosmetic allergies. Allergic reactions to cosmetic tattooing are extremely rare—much less common than reactions to the ingredients in cosmetics. Permanent makeup can be applied by hand or with a machine. The digital rotary machine is a popular application technique. A

22

small cartridge with needles deposits pigment into the skin at a rapid pace. It’s relatively quiet and easy to use. Some technicians may opt for a more traditional tattoo coil machine, which can result in finer lines and more precise shading techniques. This is an especially good choice for covering up scarring. In hand application, the pigment is tapped into the skin with a small instrument that resembles a utility knife but has needles instead of a blade. This technique produces a gentle, soft color. Slight irritation may occur with any of these methods, and a topical anesthetic is commonly applied to minimize any discomfort. Is it really permanent? Since pigment is tattooed into the top skin layer and can’t be washed off, it is considered permanent. However, fading does occur over time, and periodic maintenance is required to maintain the same look. Sun exposure and topical products also impact longevity. Permanent makeup lasts up to 10 years.

www.womensedition.com

For a shorter-term commitment, consider semi-permanent makeup. This involves microblading, where a technician uses a blade comprised of small needles to apply color that stays closer to the skin’s surface, fading out more quickly than a tattoo. The typical life of semi-permanent application is two to five years. Now that our eyebrows are perfectly arched and our eyeliner is flawless, what can be done about our lashes? Many women have thin lashes that not even the best onecoat mascara can fix. Welcome Latisse, the first FDA-approved product for lashes. It is also used to treat glaucoma and is available by prescription only. It improves lash length, thickness, and darkness by stimulating the growth cycle and increasing the total number of hairs. Initial results are visible after four weeks, and full results are seen at around 16 weeks. Like all medications, Latisse is associated with certain side effects. You should consult your physician or dermatologist for more information. Spray makeup is another growing trend. It works much like hairspray, setting makeup in place. Tinted spray foundations add color and can dim the glare from bright, white legs. It’s important to spray it onto a sponge first, not directly onto the skin! For the best outcome, consult a local spa or salon. To achieve the best look, you must start with a clean canvas. Electrolysis provides that canvas, removing body hair by destroying the growth center of the hair follicle through the application of electric current during several treatments. It can be used on multiple body parts, including the face, underarms, legs, and bikini area. A mild stinging sensation is typical. Electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal treatment approved by the FDA. Not all beautification procedures are new. Eyebrow threading originated in the Middle East centuries ago and is still an effective grooming practice. Threading is performed by an aesthetician using a double-stranded cotton thread, twisting it around a single hair or an entire row of hairs, and then pulling the hair out from the roots. This is less painful and much faster than tweezing or waxing, and it requires only monthly touch-ups. Less pain and less time? Sounds good to me. Looking great is easier than ever before. To learn more about these procedures, visit your favorite spa, salon, or dermatologist’s office. Sources for this article included: spcp. org, consultingroom.com, webmd.com, and goodhousekeeping.com. Mitchell J. Henry, MD Get Great Results with Smartlipo By Jodi Fuson

Saddle bags, love handles, double chins—whatever you call these extra fat deposits, you can have them removed with Smartlipo. This procedure is often used to eliminate the fat deposits that stubbornly resist diet and exercise. Plastic surgeon Dr. Mitchell J. Henry specializes in this procedure, also known as laser-assisted lipolysis or liposuction. “You’ll see a much better and faster result and less chance of dimpling than with traditional liposuction,” he explains. Dr. Henry, certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, has been performing liposuction for over 20 years, and he’s been using Smartlipo for 10 years. Women between 20 and 60 years of age make up the majority of his clientele. They commonly consult with him about trouble areas like the thighs, tummy, and hips. Smartlipo can also be used to remove excess fat on the back and under the arms. For men, the tummy and neck tend to be the main areas of concern, Dr. Henry shares. The procedure is generally done on an outpatient basis at a local hospital or surgical center. Dr. Henry applies a Triplex laser to the area first, which heats up the

skin and fat, causing the fat to liquefy. Then he suctions out the liquid with a small tube through inconspicuous incisions. Although there is a limit to Dr. Mitchell J. Henry how much liposuction can be done at one time, Dr. Henry explains, his clients often need just one treatment. Conventional liposuction is designed to remove greater amounts of fat. Smartlipo is a good complement and may also be used in conjunction with conventional liposuction. All procedures begin with a one-on-one consultation.

You’re So Vein You Probably Think This Article Is About You—And It Is! By Kylie Gumpert

When our veins are functioning properly, most of us don’t give them a second thought. But for women who have experienced what happens when veins don’t function as they normally should, veins can bring a great deal of discomfort, both physical and emotional. Most of us will experience vein issues at some point in our lives, either from an underlying health condition or as a natural consequence of aging. However, there are steps you can take to prevent some kinds of vein trouble and treatments that can help solve problems that arise. According to the Office on Women’s Health, slightly more than half of American women have some type of vein problem, and problems are more likely to occur as we age. Thankfully, treatments for vein issues have become more accommodating. When vein problems cause physical pain or pose a health risk, treatment is often covered by insurance. Two of the most common vein issues are varicose veins and spider veins. In the case of varicose veins, weakening of vein walls or valves makes it more difficult to return blood to the heart, and blood may end up pooling in the veins. These veins eventually become misshapen and enlarged, protruding underneath the skin’s surface in twisted-looking coils. Varicose veins are most likely to form on the legs, and they can cause swelling, a feeling of heaviness, fatigue, and even ulcers or darkening of the skin. Spider veins are tiny, engorged veins that can be found on many parts of the body, including the face. They appear underneath the surface of the skin in a web-like formation. They can be caused by hereditary factors, injuries, or sun exposure. Sometimes spider veins can cause an itching or burning feeling, but they rarely cause serious issues. Because spider veins are more of a cosmetic issue than a medical issue, their treatment is often not covered by insurance. Varicose veins and spider veins are usually superficial veins, which lie closest to the skin and are the most susceptible to damage. Their proximity to the surface of the skin is why they are so visible, which can be frustrating but is less likely to be a threat to your health. The veins that you can’t see are the ones that are more likely to cause serious health problems. Blood clots are often a serious vein problem, especially if they end up lodged in the heart or lungs. Clots can form in superficial or deep veins, which are found in the center of the legs, arms, and hips. If a large blood clot breaks free and travels through the venous system to the heart or lungs, it can prevent blood flow to these vital organs. About 1 in 20 people will experience a deep vein blood clot (known as deep vein thrombosis) in their lifetime. When a clot moves from a deep vein and lodges in the lung, it’s called a pulmonary embolism, which can cause heart failure. The presence of clots can damage a vein’s structure and cause swelling, pain, cramps, itching,

26

and sores. If you experience these symptoms and are suspicious about what is causing them, visit your medical provider right away. It is possible to repair and correct damaged, swollen, and misshapen varicose veins, and it is possible to remove parts of veins that are no longer functioning properly. When treatment is successful, the body heals quickly and the signs and symptoms of varicose veins are often significantly decreased, if not entirely gone. As a step toward treatment for varicose veins, most insurance companies require patients to first try wearing compression stockings for a designated amount of time. These apply pressure to the lower legs to reduce swelling and improve blood flow. If the stockings do not significantly improve your symptoms, it’s time to consider procedural options. Radiofrequency ablation often targets the saphenous vein, which is the longest vein in the body and runs along the inside of the legs. The deterioration of this vein is often what leads to varicose veins lower in the leg. In this procedure, a catheter that exerts radiofrequency energy is inserted into the vein. As the catheter moves through the vein, the heat closes up the vein, bit by bit. The body then naturally reroutes blood through nearby, healthier veins. Patients are able to walk right out of the office after the procedure and will need to wear compression stockings for the next couple of days. Endovenous laser treatment is very similar to radiofrequency ablation except that the catheter inserted has a laser fiber. This exerts heat, damaging the vein and causing it to clot, effectively closing it. As with most vein treatment procedures, the patient is likely to bruise some and will need to wear a compression garment over the area for a few days but will be able to immediately get up and walk around.

www.womensedition.com

Sclerotherapy and foam sclerotherapy can close pesky varicose veins, although it may take a few weeks to see a difference, and multiple injections may be necessary. A physician will inject a solution, often salt-based, that effectively closes up the veins. The foam solution is used for larger veins. Vein stripping involves gradually removing parts of a varicose vein as opposed to sealing it off. This method is one of the oldest for treating varicose veins. It has a longer recovery time than newer methods, as well as a higher risk of adverse effects. Decreasing or eliminating the appearance of spider veins is also possible, although the procedures necessary to do this tend not to be covered by insurance. Veinwave is a newer procedure to eliminate small spider veins, even those on the face or nose. The doctor will insert a very fine needle near the spider vein, and the needle will produce focused heat that damages and destroys the vein. Patients may feel a quick prick, but there is minimal risk of scarring. Laser treatments are another option for spider vein treatment. First, the doctor numbs the treatment area. The laser then pierces the skin, heats up the vein, and causes it to clot together and close. It may take two to six treatments to eliminate the appearance of the spider vein, and it is very important to keep the treated area out of the sun until it heals. A new technique called VenaSeal is an FDA-approved system used to permanently treat varicose veins close to the surface of the skin. This procedure involves using a small amount of medical glue which is injected into the affected vein. VenaSeal does not require any immediate post-treatment pain medication or uncomfortable compression stockings. Most vein treatments have immediate or close-to-immediate

results, and patients can often resume their normal daily activities right after their procedure. Despite the success of these treatments, there is no guarantee that troublesome veins won’t continue to develop, especially because we are all more likely to develop these issues as we age. Therefore, it’s important to take steps to keep your veins as healthy as possible—whether you’ve experienced vein problems yet or not. Excess body weight can harm blood flow, so you should always get regular exercise and maintain a healthy diet. During the day, you should make sure you change positions regularly. If you spend most of the day sitting, elevate your feet every once in a while to give the veins in your lower legs a break. Wearing compression stockings can also help reduce the chances of developing varicose or spider veins. Wearing sunscreen on your face and any other exposed skin is especially important for preventing spider veins. In some cases, wearing high heels can lead to vein problems, so it may be beneficial to alternate them with different kinds of shoes. Tight clothing, especially around the waist, hips, and upper legs can also cut off circulation and damage your veins over time, if worn too often. As with any health issue, there are factors that make a person more or less likely to develop vein problems. We don’t have much control over risk factors like increasing age, family medical history, or natural changes in hormone levels, but we can definitely take steps to avoid obesity, increase physical activity, and decrease sun exposure. Help maintain healthy blood flow and improve your overall health! Horizon Physical Therapy Personal and Personalized Care By Kathy Kugler

Imagine a place where you can go to heal both the physical and the emotional aspects of injury recovery and pain. Horizon Physical Therapy is that place. Clinic founder Shane Jansa, MSPT, describes his staff as caring, dedicated, and highly trained professionals who offer the one-on-one treatment that patients deserve. “Part of our commitment to serving our patients involves education,” Shane explains. With the right information, he believes that patients can make informed decisions about how to get pain-free and stay that way. Patient JJ Kalita became a believer in Horizon Physical Therapy after he had Achilles tendon surgery. He had been experiencing a lot of pain and was wearing knee-high boots designed to keep his tendons stretched. His three-month recovery left him frustrated because he couldn’t keep up with his previously active and fitness-oriented lifestyle. “Shane and his staff showed me some things I could do in the gym,” JJ shares. “They showed me how to recover. I felt like everybody at Horizon cared about how I was progressing.”

28

The clinic has been open since 2007, but its genesis was many years ago. As a high school student, Shane was considering a career in medicine. He loved biology and studying the science of life. During college, he realized that being an entrepreneur was the right path for his future. Some self-doubt crept into his mind as he worked on his undergraduate degree in health administration at the University of Nebraska– Lincoln. He had developed an interest in physical

Physical Therapy Tech, Courtney

www.womensedition.com

therapy and worried he might not have what it takes to be accepted into the competitive master’s degree program. He recalls turning to his sister, Misty Sorensen, for advice. “She just looked at me and said, ‘Aren’t you going to try?’ She inspired me. Had she not said that, I would’ve succumbed to self-doubt, and I’d never have gone into physical therapy.” Other major influences in Shane’s career include his mom, Sheri, who gave him no choice about going to college, and his father, Bernie, who saw to it that he worked a variety of manual labor jobs on and off the family farm. “I had every horrible job known to man, and it made me want to go to school,” Shane says. “I swear my dad did that on purpose. He helped build my character.” He attributes his kind and caring side he offers his patients to his brother, Todd, who at a young age, treated everyone the same no matter who they were. Not that running a business is easy, he admits. Business owners face many challenges, especially in the healthcare industry. Insurance is a major challenge, and not just because requirements are always changing. Horizon, like most clinics nationwide, has to deal with declining reimbursements for care. In addition, many patients are postponing treatment because they have less coverage, which leads to more complex patient care when they finally seek treatment. How can a patient-centered business grow and thrive in an uncertain world? Shane attributes much of the clinic’s success to the staff, including his wife, Lori, who is also a physical therapist at Horizon. “I’m not that smart, but I’m smart enough to surround myself with smart, good people,” he said. “At the end of the day, if you don’t like the people you are working with—good luck!” Shane and his staff understand that each

patient has different recovery needs. Each physical therapist has more than 15 years of experience treating and managing joint and muscle pain. Grateful patient Mary Spencer became a member of the Horizon family after a double knee joint replacement. Her situation was complicated—she had a bad fall seven weeks after surgery. “After that accident, Shane worked with me to keep things moving,” Mary recalls. “I’d lost a lot of strength, and it was very hard to build it back up. Shane taught my husband how to help me with the movements so I only had to go in once a month. A Decade of Experiences Life Is Good I was having a conversation with some women friends the other night about how we have changed over the years. We’re all over 50, and we were reflecting on the past decades of our lives. The more we got into the discussion, the more it became apparent to me that I was sitting with a group of people who really like themselves. They like their lives and they like the future that lies before them. “I don’t like myself, I’m crazy about myself.” —Mae West Most of us have children in their 20s and 30s; some of us have grandchildren. We were remembering those decades of drama in our own lives: the relationship breakups/divorces, the deaths of family members and friends, the sleepless nights with babies, the loss of jobs we loved, and the financial hardships that we all had to face. “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” —E.E. Cummings All of us are emotionally stronger than we were in our 20s, our 30s, and even our 40s. The fascinating thing about having life experience is that it teaches us that nothing is ever as terrible as it may seem in the moment. It teaches us that every terrible situation will pass, no matter what it is.

I remember the first time that a young man who I was deeply in love with broke up with me. I was 16 years old. I thought it was the end of the world. I cried. I sobbed. I thought I would never love again. Looking back on that experience 40 years later, I laugh out loud. (As my son, Adam, says, “It’s all relative, and it depends upon your perspective.”) I am so thrilled that I did not end up with that young man. I guess the universe knew that I had asked for so much more and that there was someone a whole lot better out there. His name was Jim, and I was married to him for 33 years before his passing. “Always be a first-rate version of yourself instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.” —Judy Garland Life experience is great. I would not be the person I am today if I hadn’t had the life experiences that I have had in my life. Were some of them heartbreaking? Absolutely. Were some of them exhilarating? Thank goodness, yes! My women friends who were sitting at the table and having this amazing discussion like who they are. Life is good. I anticipate life experience will continue to head us all in this direction! “Be who you are, say what you feel. Those who mind don’t matter. And those who matter don’t mind.” —Dr. Seuss

Doing Stupid Things Doesn’t Mean You’re Stupid Get Smarter—Learn From Mistakes! It is already November! The year has flown by. Reports for the first quarter should be out, and the first semester is rapidly coming to a close. It’s a good time to take stock. How are the kids doing in school? A friend says her kids are doing some “stupid stuff.” Examples include: doing their homework but forgetting to turn it in; getting docked points because there was no name on the paper; waiting until the last minute to do a project that had been assigned weeks ago. I asked if any of those things sounded familiar…they did. As it turns out, we’ve all done stupid stuff and made bad decisions. Smart people learn from their mistakes. When the kids that I tutor complain, I remind them that school is THEIR responsibility…THEIR job. Not everyone loves their job. Smart people do their best and look for the things that make their job easier or more pleasant. Learning to put a positive spin on things helps. Still, we all make mistakes sometimes. The trick is getting our kids (and ourselves) to realize why the decision…or mistake…or action…was a bad one. Most kids are not bad, they just don’t think things through. Sometimes, facing the consequences of their decisions is the only way to find out. That’s why we say hindsight is 20/20. What are the consequences if your kids don’t earn passing grades? Are do-overs allowed? Will they be held back? When

By Marge Shoemaker, BS, MS

kids get bad grades, help them figure out why. My grandson was bemoaning the fact that his grades weren’t as good as they should have been last year. “Do you know why?” I asked. He replied that one of the reasons was that he hadn’t done all the work. “What can you do about that?” I questioned. “I have to change my attitude, first,” he answered. “That’s a smart observation,” I replied. We went on to talk about personal responsibility. Kids are like horses—you can lead them to water, but you can’t make them drink. You can give the kids advice and support, but you can’t make them learn…and learning is what school is all about. Making mistakes is okay if you learn from them. In fact, trial and error is a good way to learn. Just don’t call a kid stupid for making dumb mistakes or bad decisions. He’s only human. I believe Forrest Gump was wrong when he said, “Stupid is as stupid does.” Adults make mistakes all the time, for the same reasons kids do…inattention, lack of forethought, even lack of ambition. We’re not stupid. We just do stupid things sometimes. People feel better when they get honest praise for something they’ve done. Remember, kids are people, too. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Pet Grooming All You Need to Know By Kathy Glow

Good grooming is about more than just having a pretty pet. Caring for your pet’s outer appearance can help ensure that its insides are healthy, too. The best grooming is a combination of things to do with your pet at home and regular sessions with a professional groomer. The first step to good grooming involves brushing your dog or cat regularly at home, even if it has short fur. While hair balls are not usually a problem for dogs, they can cause intestinal upset in cats. When brushing your pet, check for unusual lumps or bumps on the skin. One of the first signs of illness in your pet can be a change in its coat or skin. Check your pet’s ears and eyes for any signs of infection or redness. Experts also recommend brushing your pet’s teeth at least once or twice a week, if not every day. Active cats and dogs who spend time outdoors will wear down their claws naturally by scratching and digging. However, indoor cats and dogs will need them trimmed occasionally. Some pet owners opt to trim their pet’s claws themselves, though this can be a tricky job. Be careful to trim only a little bit at a time to avoid cutting them to the quick and drawing blood. Declawing cats is a controversial practice. It involves removing not only the claw but also the little piece of bone from which the claw grows. In this procedure, the pad is also affected, causing the cat pain for several weeks. In cosmetic declawing, a tiny curved blade is used to dissect out the claw and the piece of bone. While it is an option, not many veterinarians do it, since it is not medically necessary. Declawing may be recommended when the owners would otherwise give up the cat due to destructive behavior or if the owner is immunocompromised and must avoid scratches. When it comes to the more involved stages of grooming, visiting a professional groomer will save you time and energy. Large pets, young pets, those with thick or curly coats, or pets who are resistant to handling all benefit from being groomed by a professional. The frequency with which you choose to have your pet groomed depends on a number of factors: time spent outdoors, season of the year, and length of the coat, to name a few. Most groomers recommend grooming your pet about once a month. You will need to make an appointment for grooming. Pet stores, veterinary offices, pet spas, and private groomers are all good places to take your pet. Ask friends and your veterinarian for recommendations. Be sure to clearly communicate your requests and concerns to the groomer. It might help to bring a picture of how you would like your pet to look. Many groomers require vaccination records and will most likely ask questions such as whether your pet is pregnant or nursing, takes any medications, is being treated for ticks or fleas, or has any behavioral concerns.

34

You can ask questions, too, about their procedures, what products they use, and the level of experience your groomer has. You can get a feel for the facility by looking at the overall cleanliness and the rapport the staff has with your pet and the other pets in their care. The groomer will get to know your dog or cat by petting it and talking to it—developing a bond. The groomer will then comb or brush out mats before bathing your pet. Be aware that sometimes she will have to cut out mats that cannot be brushed out. Then she will bathe and dry your pet. You might have the opportunity to choose extras, such as a sweetsmelling shampoo, paw balm, or special powders. The groomer will also check your pet’s ears for signs of infection and will remove excess buildup. Once dry, your pet’s coat will be trimmed, clipped, or shaved. Groomers generally trim the hair around the ears, eyes, and mouth and on the bottoms of the feet. They will trim the nails to a comfortable length. Some groomers offer nail grinding, which involves a special tool that smooths the tip of the nails in order to reduce scratching. Finally, the groomer will style your pet any way you desire. If you want bows or frills, ask and you shall receive. Another advantage of taking your pet to a professional groomer is that she can take care of the yucky stuff—anal glands, skunk spray, and removal of fleas and ticks, to name a few. Between professional grooming sessions, you can help keep your pet in tip-top shape by giving it a good brushing at least once a week, since a buildup of mats can be uncomfortable for your pet. Positive Perspective

Are You Having Any Fun? Maybe It’s Time “Over-seriousness is a warning sign for mediocrity and bureaucratic thinking. People who are seriously committed to mastery and high performance are secure enough to lighten up.” —Michael J. Gelb So, has seriousness taken over all of us? Has our feeling tone become one of responsibility, intensity, and earnestness? Whatever happened to gaiety, lightness, joy, and fun? “Mix a little foolishness with your serious plans: it’s lovely to be silly at the right moment.” —Horace (Roman Poet) If this guy from Rome got it, what’s happened to the rest of us in the twenty-first century? I don’t know what it is about “maturing,” but all of a sudden, before we know what has happened, we’re married, we have house payments, and, more often than not, we have children who fill up that house. We go from carefree kids, adolescents, and young adults to mature, responsible, tax-paying citizens. Is this a good thing? Not if we’re grim. “A man’s maturity: that is to have rediscovered the seriousness he possessed as a child at play.” —Friedrich Nietzsche When we are born, we knew that our “job” going forth was

By Janet Van deWalle

to seek our joy…to follow our bliss. You can tell that by simply observing a baby or toddler. They are so excited by life! The question that most often comes out of my mouth is, “So, are you having any fun?” If you consistently answer “no” to this question, then you know you’re on the road to dullness! “Dullness is the coming of age of seriousness.” —Oscar Wilde Dullness and seriousness is a feeling tone that many of us have assumed is the adult way to behave. We have followed the perceived rule that we are supposed to be serious as we go through our lives. We find ourselves in the middle of our lives, having followed all the rules—only to arrive at a point of total, complete dullness. “If you obey all of the rules, you miss all of the fun.” —Katherine Hepburn So, maybe it’s time to break those rules—those beliefs—that we have superimposed upon our lives. Maybe it’s time to have some fun! “The average person living to age 70 has 613,620 hours of life. This is too long a period not to have fun.” —Author Unknown
