Editor’s Notes
Welcome Springtime We’ve spent the last couple of months drenched in layers of cold snow and blown dry with blizzard-like winds that cut right through us. Now, it’s almost spring! I, for one, have already caught spring fever—the good kind, that is! There was once a bad kind of spring fever. It was not at all like what I have right now. According to Dr. Paul A. Janson, what was known as “spring fever” or “spring disease” in the 17th and 18th centuries was actually scurvy, a severe vitamin C deficiency. At that time, fresh fruits and vegetables laden with vitamin C were simply not available during the cold winter months. As a result, people spent the winter depleting all the vitamin C in their bodies. By the time spring finally rolled around, they were sick with spring fever. Many didn’t survive. Like I said, it was the bad kind! Enter Jonathan Chapman, a.k.a. Johnny Appleseed. We’ve all heard the old adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Of course, an orange is a much better source of vitamin C, but apples have vitamin C, as well…and they could be stored through the winter. Johnny Appleseed was an amazing entrepreneur, born in 1774. He walked (history tells us he was barefoot most of the time) 100,000 square miles as he laid claim to land by planting orchards of 50 apple trees on each plot of land. He then sold the land when the trees were mature. He was an interesting, wealthy, and quirky man. His apples helped end the spring fever that devastated so many people. My spring fever hits me with a kind of restlessness. I want to get things done! I want to improve my living space; I want to travel. When my kids were in grade school, they were gazing out the classroom window, itching to get outside and get dirty! Well…I guess it wasn’t just my kids. I still want to get outside and get dirty, too. I love pulling weeds and discovering the tiny, tender leaves about to pop out of the ground and soak in that soothing sunshine as they become beautiful, colorful blooms. We reap what we sow, as they say, and Johnny Appleseed sowed health and wealth by sowing apple seeds. Luckily for the people around him, they got to reap the benefits! Welcome springtime, the super moon, and the spring equinox on March 20th this year. See you next month!

Nothing to Wear? Simple Spring Basics
By Holly Bell
Spring makes us want to clean, simplify, and freshen up everything inside our homes, including our closets. There are some basic items that every chic woman needs in her wardrobe, and spring is the best time to make sure these treasures are there, stylish, and in good shape. With these basic items, you can get dressed quickly and easily and always look put together. The first thing you need is a pair of classic white sneakers. I am not talking about a running shoe, just a lightweight, simple, casual shoe. These will go everywhere and with everything, from cropped pants to a summer dress, and they’re so comfortable. If you love the look, you can add more sneakers in fun patterns or colors, but start with a simple white. To go along with this casual chic look, you will also need a good quality white tee. It’s good to buy a few new ones at the beginning of the warm season; they stain easily, and you want to have them always looking fresh. You can do short sleeves or three-quarter length sleeves, but keep them simple—no fancy sleeves or necklines. As Audrey Hepburn well knew, nothing makes you look quite as put together as a smart pair of ankle-grazing black trouser pants. These are a great alternative to jeans and can be dressed down with your white kicks or dressed up with ballet flats (another classic necessity).

To top off your basic black-and-white looks, you will need the perfect blazer. Believe me—you need this even if you don’t work in an office. Make sure it is a good fit for you! If you’re petite, a shorter blazer may be flattering. To create or emphasize an hourglass silhouette, look for a slim cut with darts and princess seaming. Pop your blazer over your black pants and white tee and add a few accessories. You will love the ease of this polished look. No wardrobe would be complete without a little black dress. If you have a hard time finding a dress that is flattering to your figure, try a shift dress. This cut falls straight from your shoulder, skimming over your body and creating a long, slim line. Use a silky, flowy blouse to dress up your basics. This year, blouses are available in beautiful scarf prints of red, yellow, and black. These are great to wear flowing over your hips, or tucked into your black pants. Yes, I said to tuck it in—and tucking it in is in vogue now. If you don’t think that is flattering for you, try this slightly easierto-wear look: tucking in the front just a little bit and leaving the back of the shirt untucked. If you want a more blousy look, you can tie the front two shirttails together in the front for a flirty sort of vibe. Of course, everyone needs a great-fitting pair of jeans. I recommend a dark wash with no destruction for those of us who are over 50. Younger gals can get away with some rips and tears. For a casual look, pair the jeans with your white tee, blazer, and white sneakers. For a dressier look, wear the jeans with your silky blouse, blazer, and ballet flats. No look is complete without a few accessories. I recommend a great watch. A basic gold or silver watch with a large face looks smart. You also want a couple of simple, go-to necklaces. A single strand with a pearl will always work with everything. For a slightly bolder look, get a longer chain with an interesting pendant. Always tasteful, diamond stud earrings go with everything. Every woman needs a great solid-color bag to carry all the essentials. It needs to be large enough to carry everything you need but not so big as to look like you are spending the night somewhere. Choose a fun color to add a little personality to your wardrobe. To top it all off, you need two basic jackets: a stylish, well-cut jean jacket and a never-goes-out-of-style trench coat. If you have these classic items in your closet, you will find that you can always put together a chic outfit that makes you feel good. We know we will add on to these basics soon enough. Before we expand our wardrobes with spring looks, we need to make sure these select great pieces are in style, are clean, and are ready to wear at any given time. That way, we’ll never get stuck telling the mirror, “I have nothing to wear today!” Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

Lightly dredge in flour seasoned with Old Bay, lemon pepper, garlic powder, and dried dill. Place the halibut in a baking dish. Top with several slices of fresh onion and some fresh lemon juice. Vogan Gold and SilverWorks Custom Jewelry Design and Restoration By Cheryl Lassota
Teri and Rege Vogan, of Vogan Gold and SilverWorks, have what so many of us seek—work that is fulfilling and meaningful, every single day. “This is my happy place! It is my 43rd year at my dad’s workbenches,” Teri shares. “My parents started Megel’s Jewelry in 1949 and were in downtown Colorado Springs for 50 years.” Clearly, Ed Megel’s benches, tools, and work ethic are ingrained in the Vogans’ business. Customers appreciate their personalized service and consistent value. “We spend time with people,” says Teri, pausing to greet customer Jaci, who has brought in a treasured necklace for repair. “People want to talk to and see the person working on their items.” Teri recently finished over 70 gold and silver skate blade pins, exquisite Radix pins. “Radix pins are like Super Bowl rings for skaters,” Rege explains. After he engraved the pins, they were sent to be awarded to top finishers in the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships. “This is a labor of love,” Rege notes. The Vogans also create Radix pins for top skaters at the World Championships and have made them for the Olympic champions who competed in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018. Highly valued by champion skaters, Gold Medalists’ pins have a small diamond in the skate tip. Family businesses are most enduring when staff members’ skills complement one another. That is intrinsic to the time-proven success of Vogan Gold and SilverWorks. Teri restores jewelry and designs custom rings, necklaces, and bracelets in gold, silver, and platinum. Rege specializes in engraving and quartz watch repair. He taught employee Debbie Spector to engrave everything from jewelry to champagne bottles. Rege is also a master of sublimation art. It is a process of turning the ink in pictures into a gas that will permeate metal, ceramic, acrylic, or fabric, resulting in show-stopping photo keepsakes for families and schools. The Vogans carry a few designer lines to include NellMarie Jewelry and Susan Silver Jewelry. Both lines are fine jewelry with gemstones set in silver. Hollie Arrington is Teri’s apprentice. She expertly repairs and cleans jewelry, does pearl stringing, and assists wherever she’s needed. Hollie delights in showing their ever-changing display of Lovepop cards. These pop-up greeting cards are unique additions to any gift. With a new laser engraver, Rege creates personalized items for all occasions. “It can cut up to

a quarter of an inch into plastic or wood,” he explains, holding up a wooden l-r: Hollie, Teri, Rege, rolling pin etched with designs that will transfer Shelby (the dog), onto dough. He designed such a rolling pin for an and Debbie aspiring young chef; it featured hearts and the chef’s name in various fonts. Hollie describes the engraved wooden music boxes they are making with the laser. “We cut out each piece for the music boxes, then put them together with a component on the inside that plays the customer’s choice of music,” Hollie says. Rege can engrave sayings, names, logos, and highdefinition graphics on wood, leather, metal, acrylic, and many other surfaces, from granite to sugar cookies. “I’ve even laser-etched on a pumpkin pie!” he exclaims. Teri, Rege, and their staff also have talents outside the shop. They all play in the Canyon Winds Band, a Colorado Springs non-professional group that gives free community concerts. The Vogans’ friend, Paul, provides the concert programs and is a loyal customer at Vogan Gold and SilverWorks. When Paul’s graduate school ring had to be removed from his swollen finger, he knew that “the Vogans were the perfect ones” to repair his damaged ring. When he brought it to the shop, he learned about their new laser engraver and how Rege produces promotional and customer appreciation items for local businesses. As a businessman himself, Paul loves this new development. “To have our logo or name on items is powerful,” Paul says. “It’s really important to me to support local businesses, versus ordering from an unknown online entity.” For custom jewelry design and repair—and now laser engraving!—visit Vogan Gold and SilverWorks at 2224 North Wahsatch Avenue, in Colorado Springs. The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information, call 719-227-7282 or visit vogangold.com. WE

Hobby Riders and Serious Competitors Equestrian Sports for Everyone By Brie Christensen
Whether you’re a serious competitor or just in it for the love of horses, equestrian sports provide many opportunities for structured riding. Various disciplines are available for horses of all breeds and for riders of all skill levels. Once you find a variety you love, equestrian sporting can last a lifetime, for you and the horse! The United States Equestrian Federation’s list of international disciplines includes dressage, endurance, combined driving, jumping, eventing, reining, vaulting, and para-equestrian. There’s something for everyone! Dressage is one of the three equestrian Olympic disciplines. The sport includes nine progressive levels of competition to showcase all levels of training. As such, it is open to riders of all skill levels and horses of all breeds. Endurance, as you might guess from the name, consists of long-distance riding on various terrain and at varying altitudes. The sport tests the fitness and stamina of the horse and the discipline and horsemanship skills of the rider. Arabian horses are well known for dominating in this sport. Jumping is one of the most popular equestrian sports of all—and perhaps the most entertaining to watch, as we remember each time the summer Olympics roll around. This sport involves jumping over a series of obstacles, and horses and ponies of all sizes and breeds compete at various levels. Eventing is something of a horse triathlon—it includes the events of dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. The three events are often contested over three days. In combined driving, one, two, or four horses lead a carriage through three phases: driven dressage, marathon, and a cones course. The discipline tests the driver’s ability as well as the speed, athleticism, and obedience of the horses. There are no breed specifications or required skill levels for this sport. The exciting-to-watch equestrian sport of reining developed from the skills required of horses and human workers at livestock ranches. The required movements include things like small slow circles, large fast circles, 360-degree spins, and sliding stops. Vaulting is an ancient sport that is, understandably, referred to as gymnastics on horseback. Riders are judged on the gymnastics routines they perform on the horse, and the horses are judged on their consistency of gait, among other things. Para-equestrian sports, which include dressage and driving, provide competitive opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities that render them unable to compete against able-bodied athletes. Riders are grouped by functional ability to ensure a fair competition. If none of the these has sparked your interest, you might consider some of the national disciplines identified by the United States Equestrian Federation. They include English pleasure discipline, parade horse
competition, roadster, carriage pleasure driving, and Western equestrianism. The English pleasure discipline showcases the refined manners and technique of both horse and rider. Horses must exhibit excellent obedience, and movements must be smooth throughout transitions from one gait to the next. In parade horse competition, horses and drivers are also mainly judged on manners and beauty. American saddlebreds, Morgans, and hackneys are ideal for this discipline, but any breed is welcome. In the roadster sport, horses are judged on their form at varying speeds. Antique vehicles or replicas are used in carriage pleasure driving, and it is one of the older and more popular of the equestrian sports. The Western equestrian discipline comes from the daily tasks required of a working ranch horse. As such, American stock breeds are popular for these competitions. Western dressage focuses on things like usefulness, rideability, safety, calm, and steadiness. In Western reining and horsemanship, riders are expected to exhibit control and adaptability. Children who work with horses learn many vital life skills, including patience, compassion for another living being, responsibility, and sportsmanship. If introduced to horses early on and given proper direction, children may find a lifelong passion for horses. To become truly successful, both horse and rider must be properly trained. Various schools offer lessons and advice for people of all ages who are just starting out with horses or who are more seasoned riders. Communication is the first step to horseback riding, and that involves getting the horse’s attention. It’s critical for riders to teach their horses a language based on their relative body positions. Riding involves a lot of grit and physical strength, so it’s important for riders to remain physically healthy and fit outside of their equestrian training. Specific training with the horse can take place at the stable or riding school. Whether you are just starting out or are already proficient, whether you are riding just for pleasure or hope to compete at the Olympic level, one thing remains true about equestrian sports—there’s something out there for all riders. A Woman’s Work
Why We Cry Tears of Sorrow, Tears of Joy By Sharon Knierim
Do you ever wonder why we cry? If you’ve ever stopped to think about it, you’ll be able to recognize that there are tears of happiness as well as tears of loss or melancholy. Naturally, we all prefer tears of contentment and pride. These are the tears that cheer us up and make us glad that we’re alive. Tears of sadness can work one of two ways. Some people feel worse after crying over disappointment or loss. Others insist that there is nothing as soul-cleansing as a good old-fashioned crying jag. Whatever our reasons for crying, it is always an emotional trigger that brings these salty drops to our cheeks, reddening our eyes and swelling our nasal passages. For some of us, crying results in the hiccups, in more crying, or at least in some embarrassment. Crying is a natural process, though, and sometimes it is the only option we have to express our strong emotions. I have seen grown men cry, though not often. It is a disturbing sight for someone like me, as I grew up among men who seemed like solid steel. This was a group of men identified by Tom Brokaw as “the greatest generation.” They simply did not cry when anyone was looking, so we all naturally assumed that the male portion of the human population didn’t cry at all, though I’m sure they had plenty to cry about at times! The one and only time I saw our father cry was after he received news that his best friend had passed away suddenly. Dad went immediately to the barn, and I sneakily followed him. Peeking through an open window, I encountered the most disturbing sight I had seen in my young life. There stood our dad, crying like a baby. Deflated to have seen him in such a downcast manner, I ran back to the house and never spoke about it. When I did see him about an hour later, he seemed fully recovered and very dignified again. Many women were and still are champion criers. Perhaps we’re more emotionally wired to let our tear ducts flow when the time is right, or perhaps we just feel more comfortable letting it out. There is nothing shameful or undesirable about crying! Have you seen the movie “Steel Magnolias”? Now, that is a real tearjerker. I have been able to watch it only one time. I suppose that story is too familiar or cuts too close to home for some of us. Our mother cried tears of joy when she saw her
14
firstborn son fly over our family farm in the late 1950s. He had made arrangements with his pilot buddy to fly over, dip their wings, circle, dip their wings one more time, and then fly on. Although she knew in advance that this event was going to take place, she was so overwhelmed by it that she cried for nearly an hour. Those were tears of pride and happiness, and I’m so glad she had that opportunity to see our brother spread his wings. Tears of physical pain must be acknowledged, too. Sometimes, when we are experiencing tremendous pain, there seems no way to prevent or stop crying. Pain is a lonely place, filled with such uncertainty. We don’t know what will happen to us next or what the outcome will be for us. Not to be forgotten are the tears of a broken heart or as the result of getting our feelings hurt. These tears and their triggers are just awful. Nobody enjoys hurt feelings, and we often are left with a bitter taste afterwards. After the “big cry,” we may feel selfdoubt and a lack of trust toward others and toward ourselves and our own judgment. The best move to make is to have a thorough weep. Cry it out before starting to rebuild your pride and confidence. Of course, we all know that tears of joy and happiness are the best tears that there are. This kind of tearing up feels good and always has a good outcome. If you are a big crier, like some of my friends and relatives, be sure to always carry lots of tissues wherever you go. If you’re lucky enough to be married to a farmer (or a craftsman), this may be taken care of for you—they always have huge cotton handkerchiefs in their pockets that soak up extra amounts of those salty tears. Just be sure to kindly launder it for him before returning it to his stash of hankies! I hope you only have good tears in the future. WE

Living Well With Allergies Don’t Let Allergies Get You Down!
By Kylie Gumpert
What impacts nearly 50 million Americans every single year, can be life-threatening, and is a health issue whose cause scientists still can’t pinpoint? Allergies. Even when they’re relatively mild, they are no fun for anyone. What can you do to ensure you are protecting yourself and living your fullest life, even with allergies? Let’s take a look. An allergy is when your body recognizes a substance (called an allergen) in your body as harmful and reacts, attempting to get rid of it. During this process, the body releases immunoglobulin, an antibody that tells certain cells to release chemicals that cause allergy symptoms. Many substances are known to cause people’s bodies to react in this way. The most common allergens include types of medication, foods, insect stings or bites, latex or other materials, and airborne allergens like mold, dander, and pollen. Common reactions to allergens include sneezing, coughing, diarrhea, rashes, hives, cramps, pain, swelling, redness, tightness in the chest, and, of course, itchy eyes, nose, or skin. Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can include a drop in blood pressure, difficulty breathing due to narrowing airways, a skin rash, a weak pulse, and nausea or vomiting. It requires immediate medical attention and a medication called epinephrine, which can be prescribed as a portable injection device. Why some people’s bodies overreact to substances that should be harmless and other people’s bodies do not is still not fully understood. What we do know is that allergies appear to be increasing over time. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that food allergies among children in the United States increased by 50 percent between 1997 and 2011 and that nutspecific allergies among children more than tripled during that time. The most common food allergies include milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, and sesame, according to Food Allergy Resource & Education. The same study found that skin allergies among children also increased by almost 70 percent. Respiratory allergies seem to have remained about the same during this period of time. It’s important to keep in mind that the United States has been experiencing warmer weather over the last several years, and the pollen season is almost one month longer than normal. This increases the time that people are exposed to irritating warm-weather allergens. We also know that having allergies is often inherited from family members. This doesn’t necessarily mean that specific allergies will be passed down, just that children are more likely to have allergies if their parents do. Some people do outgrow their allergies over time, but it’s difficult to pinpoint why. Very few people will outgrow certain allergies, such as allergies to peanuts, fish, or shellfish, according to the Mayo Clinic. In order to properly diagnose someone with allergies,
16
a doctor must gather a personal and medical history, conduct a physical examination, and then perform one or a series of allergy tests. All of these things are essential to making a medical diagnosis, as allergy tests alone can be inconclusive. Common allergy tests include the skin prick test, intradermal skin test, patch tests, blood tests, supervised challenge tests, and food elimination diets. The skin prick test involves a physician placing a small amount of liquid allergen on the patient’s skin, then lightly pricking the area. If the skin becomes red, swollen, or itchy at the site, an allergy is possible. If there is no reaction, the patient is likely not allergic to that particular substance. The intradermal test is similar to the skin prick test. With an intradermal test, the medical professional will inject a small amount of allergen just under the patient’s skin. This type of test is best for diagnosing drug or venom allergies, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, but it does not work well for determining food allergies. The patch test helps physicians understand if particular allergens cause skin reactions. They will place the allergen on the patient’s skin, cover it, and check back after two or three days to see if a rash has developed. Blood tests look at how many antibodies—which attack allergens, causing allergic reactions—the patient’s blood produces when an allergen is added. A physician-supervised challenge test involves a patient with a suspected allergy inhaling or consuming that allergen. The physician, usually an allergist who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing allergies, will observe the patient’s reaction and respond appropriately if a severe reaction occurs. A food elimination diet will help physicians and patients understand whether suspected foods are causing allergic reactions. Essentially, the diet involves cutting out these foods for a period of weeks and monitoring whether the patient’s symptoms go away while the foods are not being consumed. Once the doctor or allergist knows more about the allergy and the severity of a patient’s reaction, particular treatments can be considered. Depending on the situation, treatment options might include avoiding the allergen altogether, taking medication to combat the reaction, or participating in immunotherapy to decrease the patient’s sensitivity to an allergen. When possible, avoiding the allergen is a patient’s
www.womensedition.com
best bet toward feeling good and living safely, uninterrupted by the troubles that allergies can bring. This also prevents extensive use of medications that may well come with side effects. Of course, avoiding allergens can be much easier said than done, especially if it means staying indoors whenever there’s pollen in the air, re-homing a beloved pet, or avoiding ingredients (like dairy or wheat) that are present in many common foods. For patients who can’t or won’t avoid their allergens, medication can help mitigate the symptoms of allergic reactions. Common allergy medications include corticosteroids, antihistamines, mast cell stabilizers, decongestants, and epinephrine. These may be available over the counter, by prescription, or both. Corticosteroids help reduce the swelling or inflammation that can lead to other symptoms like itchiness, pain, or general discomfort. Corticosteroids come in many forms, and the best mode of administration depends on the type of symptoms. Nasal corticosteroids specifically target nasal allergies. Corticosteroid cream is best for itchy skin or rashes, and oral corticosteroids can help stop severe reactions. Antihistamines and mast cell stabilizers both target histamine, a chemical that causes swelling. Antihistamines block histamine, while mast cell stabilizers prevent it from being released in the first place. Decongestants won’t stop sneezing or itching, but they will shrink the swollen blood vessels causing congestion in your nose. Epinephrine is the only medication that can treat life-threatening anaphylaxis. It is pre-measured and self-injectable, and it’s vital for it to be administered soon after a severe allergic reaction takes place. Immunotherapy treatments include allergy shots and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). Both of these treatments involve gradually exposing patients to more and more of their allergens. In
some cases, this gradual exposure can lead to less severe reactions. Allergy shots can work for airborne allergies such as pollen, dander, and insect bites or stings, but they are not effective for food or medicine allergies or for allergic skin reactions. A physician will inject small amounts of an allergen in increasing amounts over time. Sublingual immunotherapy works essentially the same way, but the allergen is ingested orally in tablet form by the patient. This treatment works well for nasal allergies and asthma. There is a promising new drug that might help treat peanut allergies, though it is not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration. According to a study in The New England Journal of Medicine, 67 percent of children who took the oral immunotherapy drug AR101 were able to consume a small amount of peanuts without serious symptoms. Natural treatments may also help with allergies, but you always want to talk to your physician or allergist before taking something new to make sure it’s safe and won’t react with any other medication you may be taking. These treatments often involve advice that is helpful for general health and wellness, like eating healthier, taking vitamins, and getting enough exercise. Acupuncture or herbal supplements that act as natural antihistamines may also provide some symptom relief. There are still many mysteries surrounding just why allergies occur and why they are increasing, but scientists are working toward better treatments and answers. If you think you might have an allergy, set up an appointment with an allergist today and get the answers you need to stay safe, healthy, and happy. Master Strokes The Transformative Power of Paint
By Robyn V. Powell
The arrival of springtime naturally inspires us to refresh our living spaces. If a large renovation is not in your plans this year, you can still breathe new life into your space with fresh paint. This year’s painting trends draw inspiration from the restorative power of nature, balancing our desire for a more mindful lifestyle. Check out some of the latest trends and discover how paint can transform your space in a simple and cost-effective way. Every design plan, whether it’s a single room or an entire home, begins with color. Walls are the canvas from which everything else in a room will work. Simply put, there’s no more important design decision than choosing the right paint color. What’s more, selecting color isn’t just a matter of taste. There’s plenty of scientific evidence suggesting that color has a major impact on mood—so much that it can actually change the way you feel! As society longs for a more simplified lifestyle, 2019 sees a move in the direction of deep, rich, earthy tones. While light neutrals in slightly warmer tones will continue to dominate walls, using deep colors on accent walls and cabinetry is a beautiful way to incorporate these bold, complex colors without overwhelming the space. When choosing color, it’s important to determine the primary function of a room. Ask yourself: What will this room be used for, who will spend time there, and how do you want them to feel
while they’re in the room? If, for example, you want to stir up lively conversation in a dining room or living room, look to warm, energizing, and fun colors such as the currently trending corals and terra-cottas. Looking to create warmth and harmony in a kitchen? Yellow, the sunshine shade, channels springtime and stimulates joy and happiness. Too bright or too much, however, can be overwhelming. Balance and tone are key to keeping yellow mellow! Cool, subdued hues like blue and green draw their inspiration from nature and the ocean. Evoking calm and tranquility, these hues are ideally suited to bedrooms and bathrooms, coaxing the mind to relax and escape. Neutral whites, grays, and blacks create a more contemporary feel. White walls really open up a room, lending a light and airy feel and the appearance of more space. Black absorbs light and is best used as an accent color to add drama and elegance. ›››

If you want an update in the kitchen but aren’t ready to remodel, try painting your cabinets. Depending on how much detail and prep work is required, pricing will vary, but having cabinet doors professionally sprayed will ensure a smooth finish. Painting laminate countertops is a cost-effective way to improve their style quotient. Mimic the look of granite or stainless steel with a faux granite paint or a shiny-satin finish paint in gray metallic. Painting countertops is not meant to be a long-term solution, but it’s an affordable and attractive option that can make a world of difference in the short term. Even in spaces where you aren’t painting the walls, there are plenty of ways to be creative with paint. There’s no better way to update a piece of furniture than painting it! Bring a crisp new look to a bedroom by painting a headboard. Turn an ordinary bureau or desk into a stunning design statement with bold new color. Painted surfaces are subject to wear and tear, especially if you have children or pets. Scuff marks, handprints, and crayon drawings appear on walls because, well, accidents and artwork just happen! Choosing a durable paint can mean the difference between an inconvenience and a ruined wall. Look for paints designed specifically for high-traffic areas. Choose high-quality, washable, low-VOC paint in a semi-gloss finish for easy cleanup. Sometimes, a wall is so flawed that ordinary paint simply won’t cover it up. Using a textured paint, with its thick and intentionally uneven surface, is a great option to revitalize such areas. Textured paint is also ideal for a feature wall, where a subtle texture difference adds visual interest to a room. Certain home improvement projects are best done by professionals, and painting is definitely one of them. You would be amazed how much time, mess, and re-painting you can avoid by hiring pros! A designer with a good eye who understands color psychology is a smart investment, saving you time and costly mistakes. Many designers offer a flat-fee color consultation. The next step for a successful painting project is to choose a reliable, experienced painter who has completed similar jobs. Personal referrals are your best resource, and always request a formal written estimate. Assemble the right team and let the power of paint transform your spaces—and your mood—for the better! Out and About
Your TaxLady, LLC Helping to Solve Your Tax Puzzles By Adrienne West
Many people outwardly cringe when they simply hear the word “taxes.” Kathy Bylkas, owner of Your TaxLady, LLC, smiles instead—she has a passion for taxes. “My first love is taxes!” she exclaims. “Taxes have nothing to do with numbers. They’re puzzles! Taxes are information you are trying to stick into the government rules. It’s important to find the perfect fit.” Kathy has spent the last 40 years helping individuals and small businesses find the perfect fit. She opened her Colorado Springs location 11 years ago after returning to the area from Seattle and discovering that she was not ready to retire. The Colorado Springs office is her third business. Currently, the office has a specialized, professional staff of six to 10 full-time workers, along with 10–15 additional workers who assist during tax season. The training and support that new hires receive in these temporary clerical positions help many of them find a rewarding full-time job once tax season is done. Each staff member at Your TaxLady, permanent or temporary, strives to provide clients with expert advice and services in the areas of accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, and, of course, filing taxes. The response of the Colorado Springs community demonstrates that Kathy is definitely a favorite here. Your TaxLady has been voted Gazette’s Best of the Springs for five years in a row, and many clients are happy to tell us about the excellent services they receive from Your TaxLady. “Your TaxLady has saved me time and money, providing me excellent service at reasonable fees,” states Keith Wegen. “I used several accountants before Your TaxLady, but she provides better service at half the cost.” Clients know that they can count on Your TaxLady to take care of their personal and business needs. “Kathy at Your TaxLady did a fabulous job clearing up some old tax issues for my husband,” notes client Candy Harman. “She handles all of our company taxes, as well. It is great to have someone like her on our team.” Kathy and her staff ease the burden of keeping up with all the daily clerical tasks required to run a small business. Their personalized services ensure that business owners can focus on the other important aspects of their work. “We try to keep small businesses out of trouble so that they can do what they do best,” Kathy explains. “For example, the auto mechanics we work with—they would rather work under a car than play with the books.” Another way that Kathy serves her clients is by being an advocate for them with the IRS. As a registered enrolled tax agent (EA) with the IRS, Kathy passed rigorous testing to have the authority to represent her clients with the IRS. The designation of EA also means
24
that she completes continuing education classes and follows different rules than a regular accountant. Kathy really enjoys this part of her job. “One of the most rewarding parts is getting people out of trouble with the IRS,” Kathy shares. “A lot of clients are very stressed if this is a problem, and helping them makes a huge difference in their lives.” Kathy can recall numerous occasions when clients have been in trouble with the IRS, only to discover that the problematic W-2 form was not even the client’s. Kathy helps to fix the mistake with the IRS. Anyone can benefit from the tax advice and help that Kathy and her staff provide. “There are over 1,500 brand-new pages of tax law this year,” Kathy points out. This is why it’s crucial to have someone working for you who understands the complexity and requirements of both the new and the old laws. For example, did you know that this year will be a great year, tax-wise, to start a new business? “It is phenomenal, the savings they are going to have,” Kathy proclaims. One of the things Kathy most enjoys about owning her own business is the flexibility of her hours. Kathy loves to travel with her husband. During tax season, Kathy is very busy. During the off season, however, she and her husband enjoy traveling at least one week every month. On many of these trips, they are fortunate to visit some of their 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, who are dispersed across six different states. Your TaxLady is located at 401 Windchime Place, in Colorado Springs. To find out how Your TaxLady can assist you with your personal and business accounting and tax needs, please call 719-249-1241 or email officemgr@taxladyllc.com. Getting It Straight Orthodontic Options for Every Age
By Loretta McCollum
Comedienne Phyllis Diller said, “A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.” It’s so true—one of the first things people notice about you is your smile. Flashing a big grin doesn’t just elevate your own mood, it’s also highly contagious. A great smile increases self-esteem and confidence. Whether you’re seven or 70, an orthodontist or pedodontist can help you put your best smile forward. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children should be seen by an orthodontist no later than age seven. By this time, children will typically have some permanent teeth, allowing the orthodontist to determine whether a problem may be developing. If early treatment is suggested, this is an opportunity to correct inappropriate oral habits, guide proper jaw growth, and help ensure proper alignment of future permanent teeth. Early orthodontic treatment is often performed in two phases. Phase I treatment typically occurs between the ages of 7 and 11 years, over a span of 10–14 months, and it does not necessarily involve braces. Appliances such as expanders are utilized to prepare the jaw for incoming permanent teeth, helping to avoid extractions as the child ages. A retainer may be worn until Phase II treatment begins. Phase II treatment starts when most of the permanent teeth are in place. Traditional wire braces remain the most-used alignment correction method for young people, although today’s wire brackets are smaller and less noticeable than in years past. Thermal technology in orthodontics is also becoming widespread. With thermal braces, the wires used to move the teeth are activated by body heat, reducing the number of adjustments needed and minimizing discomfort by adjusting teeth more gradually and gently. Overall discomfort with all types of braces is usually minimal and can be treated with over-thecounter pain meds. Ceramic braces are another option. The same size and shape as metal braces, their brackets are tooth-colored, making them much less noticeable than traditional wire brackets. Some also incorporate tooth-colored wire, rendering them even more inconspicuous. Alternatively, some patients opt for colored wires to complement their personality or to coordinate with seasons or holidays. No matter which appliance is chosen, the average amount of time required for alignment correction ranges from 18–36 months, depending on the degree of correction needed. When those braces finally come off, it’s a big deal for young people who are still learning how to be comfortable in their own skin, but it doesn’t end there. Mom and Dad have invested substantial time and money on the health of their children’s teeth,
26
and they don’t want to repeat the process in a few years, nor do they want their children to have to deal with it again as adults. The best way to avoid future orthodontic issues is to wear a retainer. A retainer holds teeth in place after braces have been removed and gives the bone that holds the teeth an opportunity to stabilize and rebuild. The most common type of retainer, and the most durable, is composed of an acrylic body and a wire that goes around the teeth. Retainers should be worn continuously for six months after the removal of braces, followed by overnight wear indefinitely. Though braces are often associated with tweens and teens, it’s important to remember that it’s never too late to seek orthodontic treatment. Many orthodontists report that 30 to 50 percent of their patients are adults. The basic treatment methods do not differ significantly between adults and youth, but there are additional considerations for older patients. First and foremost, adults are no longer growing, which means harder bones and possible loss of bone density. It may take longer to correct alignment, since adult bones are not as responsive to pressure. Have crowns or bridges? No problem. Once teeth are aligned, bridges and crowns can be properly placed. Adult orthodontic patients are often concerned with the aesthetics of tooth realignment. They are established in their careers and don’t want to give the impression of being immature. As previously mentioned, today’s braces are much smaller, and tooth-colored braces are less noticeable. Another popular choice for adults is Invisalign. With Invisalign, patients wear a clear plastic aligner for 20–22 hours per day. There are no wires, and patients’ food and drink choices are not as restricted, as the aligners can be removed to eat, drink, brush, and floss. They are virtually invisible and are switched out every couple of weeks as teeth gradually shift. Your local orthodontist or pedodontist can provide more information on these and other treatments designed for both children and adults. Make an appointment today, and brace yourself for a wonderful smile! Sources for this article included: webmd.com, kidshealth.org, oralb.com, aaoinfo.org, and dentalproductsreport.com. WE

Intradermal Cosmetics Enhance and Restore Your Beauty By Brenda Gracely
“Eyeliner is a convenience, but eyebrows are a necessity,” says Judee Reierson. She knows this from personal experience. “I had developed an acute thyroid condition and eventually lost my eyebrows,” she shares. She wanted to help other people going through similar difficulties, so she decided to train as an intradermal cosmetic technician. She completed her training 20 years ago and has been helping patients improve their self-confidence with permanent cosmetics ever since. Judee derives great pleasure from helping patients feel better about themselves. “If I don’t make patients happy, I am not happy,” she says. Intradermal cosmetic technicians are certified in the specialty and are dedicated to the highest standards of patient welfare and procedure excellence. Judee participates in ongoing training to keep up to date on the latest improvements in the procedures. The procedure for permanent eyebrows and eyeliner mimics the appearance of hair in the brow line or lash line. This provides the convenience of always having a polished appearance, even after swimming or other activities that may cause heavy perspiration. Ophthalmologists may recommend intradermal cosmetic procedures for people who are allergic to conventional makeup or who wear contact lenses. “Judee came highly recommended by an aesthetician who was concerned about my disappearing eyebrows,” says patient Robyn. “Having experienced some hair loss due to thyroid issues, I jumped at the recommendation. I remember how gentle, sweet-natured, and professional Judee was. I also remember the thrill of being back in my classroom and hearing a student exclaim, ‘You’ve got eyebrows! Where did you get those eyebrows?’” “Six years later, my eyebrows had faded enough to prompt another visit to Judee,” Robyn continues. “Her professional artistry and friendly, relaxing manner had not changed. Once again, I have beautifully shaped eyebrows that complement my skin coloring and define my features. As before, Judee offered a complimentary follow-up visit to ensure that I was completely satisfied with her work. Now I can just grab my morning coffee and race off to work, knowing my eyebrows are ready for the day.” Intradermal pigmentation is a revolutionary method of applying micro-insertions of natural pigment into the dermal layer of the skin. This procedure can benefit women and men with skin flaws like stretch marks, scars, loss of natural pigmentation, or burns. Facial asymmetry can be corrected. It is also a great solution for those who are physically incapable of applying their own makeup or who simply desire the freedom from daily application. Intradermal pigmentation is also used for areola restoration on breast cancer patients. Only a few
28
practitioners in the country specialize in areola restoration, and Judee is one of them. Judee receives referrals from three prominent plastic surgeons in the Colorado Springs area who perform breast reconstruction—this has become 50 percent of her work. “Breast cancer patients are my main focus,” Judee shares. “My work brings a realistic sense of depth and detail to the reconstructed breast and areola, and it restores my patients’ confidence.” Patient Cindy was familiar with her family’s history of breast and other cancers. She knew her chances of developing breast cancer were high, so she had herself tested for the BRCA gene. Having discovered she had the gene, she decided to have a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction. Cindy’s plastic surgeon referred her to Judee for restoration, and she had the procedure completed in only two sessions. “Judee had a way of helping me feel completely relaxed and comfortable; she even invited my husband to join us. After just the first session, I felt a dramatic change,” Cindy explains. “I felt complete again. Not only do I have the peace of mind of knowing I cut down my risk of breast cancer to six or seven percent, but now I can look in the mirror and see a new me with much more self-confidence.” “The most common question about undergoing the procedure is, ‘Does it hurt?’” Judee notes. “Topical anesthetics are used to minimize discomfort. Over the last two years, there has been a 100 percent industry improvement in these numbing creams.” Patients can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure. “There will be slight swelling and redness of the skin, but it subsides very quickly,” Judee continues. “Complete healing takes one to six weeks, while the pigmentation matures and reaches its final color.” She notes that her patients are pleasantly surprised at how natural their results look. If you need a boost in self-confidence and want to feel whole again, meet with Judee Reierson to discuss the possibilities of intradermal cosmetic procedures. Her office is located at 1255 Lake Plaza Drive, Suite 265, in Colorado Springs. She can be reached for an appointment at 719-499-9332. WE

Life Is Good Becoming a Better Person Well, here is the good news: I am changing, and I am growing. I used to think that I was great just the way I was. I had my life “under control.” I had a pattern to my life that had become very comfortable. Change was not something I sought or even wanted. Then, five and a half years ago, I decided to buy a restaurant/bar. Most people, myself included, thought it was a midlife crisis. All of a sudden, my very controlled life was totally out of control. In the past, I could have told you what I was going to be doing for the next six months, 12 months, or 5 years. Now, I didn’t know what I was going to have to be called on to do even that afternoon. Boy, was it tough. “Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change.”—Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, “Frankenstein” As of the first of this year, the restaurant/bar is no more. Hmm…how do I feel? Absolutely fantastic! I am back working at Women’s Edition, taking care of the magazine that I started 33 years ago. I admit, I’m a little rusty! Some of the habits and responsibilities came back very quickly, like riding a bike. In other areas, I still have quite a bit of catching up to do. I have spent many—many!—hours asking the question:
32
By Janet Van deWalle
WHY? Why did I do this? Why did I choose to go on a path so radically different from any path I’d been on before? The reality is, I think the universe offered up this challenge to force me to change. Force me to grow. Force me to become a different person—a better person. “The only way that we can live is if we grow. The only way that we can grow is if we change. The only way that we can change is if we learn. The only way we can learn is if we are exposed. And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open. Do it. Throw yourself.” —C. JoyBell C. As I said, the good news is that I am changing and growing. The bad news? Well, I’m choosing not to focus on that. I am choosing to continue on the path of growth. What’s changed is that I now relish change. I relish growth. I am looking at myself differently. I feel as if I am a better person, a stronger person, a kinder person, a person who has changed and grown. Life is good. “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” —Rumi

Refresh, Renew, Reinvigorate A Fresh Start for A New Season Ahh, spring! Mother Nature spends this time of year refreshing, renewing, and reinvigorating her domain. She refreshes the dreary skies and monochromatic tones of winter with vibrant shades of green. She renews the landscape with delicate sprouts of new growth. Her reinvigorating breezes are gentler than the harsh, biting winds we’ve been experiencing for the past few months. She reminds us that it’s time to open up and air out…everything. Start the process with spring cleaning. Open windows to let out stale, overheated air. Sweep away winter’s accumulation of grime and cobwebs. Scrub windows, walls, and floors of their wintery pall. (Who knew snow could be so dirty?) Cull your wardrobe of tired winter clothing in order to make room for lighter garments. Next, turn your attention outdoors. Freshen the yard by removing the debris that always gathers over the winter months. Clear the gardens of old growth. Plant flowers and sow seeds in anticipation of new growth. Get everything physically freshened and ready for the new season. Everything now has a new, fresher, look…but something is missing. Somehow, we’ve missed what’s most important. The urge to renew, refresh, and reinvigorate in preparation for the new season should carry over to our personal lives. Pour another cup of coffee. Fix a glass of iced tea. Sit down and take stock. Is there a past conflict that needs to be addressed? Make the move yourself instead of waiting for the other person to act. It’s not easy, but it’ll be one less thing nagging you for action. Now, it’s time to take care of you. Look at your schedule. Is it too busy or not full enough? Is it all about others, with nothing just for you? Change it accordingly! Creative Financial Services New Partner, Same Values By Lisa Boness
When Creative Financial Services owner Pauli Hubbard describes how she works with her clients, she paints quite an image. “It is as if we are standing side by side and looking out towards a beautiful sunset,” she says. “We are envisioning the possibilities together.” This idea of standing with clients every step of the way, focused on helping them attain their financial goals and dreams, also applies to her search for a new business partner. Pauli is now delighted to introduce her new partner, Jill Isbell. Jill joins Creative Financial Services as a visionary who is committed to working alongside her clients. For the past two years, Jill and Pauli have been involved in the same networks as financial professionals, and Jill impressed Pauli with her “enthusiasm, perseverance, resolve, and optimism,” Pauli recalls. Both women have earned and maintain their Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) credentials. Pauli and Jill also share the core values that shape their approach to what they do. “You can’t talk about money without knowing the person,” Jill says. “They also have to know me, to trust me.” Pauli adds, “We must meet people where they are and find out what they want. We come in as advisors to help them determine the steps to get there. We all want people who accept us for who we are.” These core values of trust, of building long-term relationships, and of integrity are important to the partners. Their shared mission is for Creative Financial Services to keep the same focus on clients and their financial health while expanding and growing their impact on more clients and the community. The large, green tree in their company logo symbolizes this emphasis on sustainable plans that lead to financial growth. “Empowering women through financial education and planning is important to us,” says Jill. Jill highlights a recent example: Pauli contributed to a workshop designed to help women who have been victims of domestic abuse learn the basics of budgeting and personal finances. “Trust comes through education. I enjoy being a resource for financial wellness,” Jill elaborates. Pauli and Jill are committed to helping clients understand the path to reaching their financial goals. This is exemplified in their business motto, “Earning Your Trust, Growing Your Wealth.” Pauli advises people of any and all financial circumstances to take the first step toward good financial health. “One day at a time, one step at a time. It is that first step that is courageous.” Financial goals and circumstances change for everyone, Jill points out, and it’s important to have a financial advisor who will honor your
34
financial goals. “It is all about giving clients Top l-r: Becky and Yenni Bottom l-r: Pauli and Jill ownership of their lives through their own financial security,” she says. Pauli elaborates on what it means to be a clientbased practice and what to expect in the initial process of working with either partner. “We need to uncover what the objective is. Most people come in when they are somewhat ready to start the discussion, sometimes triggered by something,” Pauli explains. Life events like career changes, new goals, or other changes in a person’s circumstances are some of the triggers that can make someone decide to seek the professional advice of a CFP-accredited planner. Jill’s analogy of this financial planning process is likened to the artwork that hangs in her home. “Like artists who leave pieces of their lives as a legacy, I leave a legacy in the form of plans for financial health for others to enjoy. Whatever you want, you can get there. You can have something to leave behind.” Pauli and Jill will be by your side as you envision the financial future you want. “We will educate you on how to reach that vision,” Pauli states. “This forms the confidence needed to trust our decisions. Finally, we empower clients to take the ongoing, long-term steps toward financial security.” As Jill puts it, “It doesn’t matter where you are, it is about where you are going.” She and Pauli are ready to stand with you on your journey. Are you ready to explore your own path to reaching a lifetime of financial goals and securing your own legacy? The team at Creative Financial Services, which also includes investment advisor representative Becky Miller as well as paraplanner Yenni Cheshire, can assist you in taking that first step. Landscape Function and Design in 2019 Spring Awakening By Janette Calabro
Spring awakens the spirit, triggering dreams of jewel-colored flowers and festive outdoor gatherings. Creating the perfect outdoor living space is beneficial for physical and emotional wellness. Let’s take a look at some landscape and hardscape trends for 2019. Whether you’re looking for a simple yard with traditional charm or a whimsical escape adorned with water features and lush plants, spring inspires us to bring the indoors—well, outdoors. Inside-out is trending. Staycations are also on the rise, adding to the need for the advice of professional landscapers to make our yards worth vacationing in. As the grass whispers for attention, so do the possibilities for living space improvement. For some of us, low maintenance and simplicity are priorities, letting us spend our outdoor time enjoying the yard instead of working on it. To minimize fuss, choose native plants that are accustomed to growing in your area. Slow-growing dwarf shrubs minimize pruning and can be used for borders or small hedges. Mulch is another timesaver, preventing weeds and holding moisture in the soil. Planting largescale groundcover or dense perennials promises a garden that will flourish without much attention. Plant hardiness zones established by the USDA help determine the right climate for your shrubs, trees, and flower beds. Nurseries recommend planting trees that shed in an ornamental bed where fallout blends into leaf litter. For example, the dogwood tree, hardy in zones 5 through 9, boasts six-inch flowers in the spring and strawberry-like fruits into autumn. Flowering shrubs can be great for showy color. Azalea shrubs explode into a rainbow. Use the small varieties to line a walkway or larger shrubs for hedges. Dress up a shady garden with a hedge of purple rhododendron. The double blue lilac remains a fragrant favorite, but the re-blooming dwarf pink lilac is all the rage for 2019. Be sure to consider the stunning, low-maintenance re-blooming mountain hydrangea, along with the amethyst-colored dwarf butterfly bush. Shake up spring design with the best new perennials. Choose purple leaf coral bells, heat-tolerant indigo blue catmint, or bright pink phlox for a fragrant statement in front of your border. Best annual? Try lemon coral sedum, a worry-free succulent. The newest trends in outdoor living spaces are in hot pursuit of indoor designs, trending toward smoother textures and brighter colors. Modular pavers continue their popularity, but this year will bring more pops of color sprinkled throughout, with vibrant hues of coral or other colors in random patterns. For the artist in each of us, a multi-tiered wall showcasing a sunken garden coaxes visions of serene paintings. Add soft lighting to highlight unique wall qualities.
Outdoor lighting is a must for illuminating your oasis after dark. As the sun washes the springtime sunset with a golden glow, it’s time to amp up outside. LED lighting increases safety right away and saves money and energy in the long term. Batterypowered and solar lights allow light to be placed anywhere, transcending boundaries from inside to out, illuminating focal points. Up-light a favorite tree or shrub with solar-powered warm white lights, or stagger lighting from side to side for a sense of balance along garden pathways. As focus on spiritual wellness increases, so does the need for integrating meditation space with a Zen garden or a tranquil water feature. The soothing sounds of a water fountain bring beauty and mental clarity, along with drowning out unwanted noise from the neighbors. Add a fire pit or fireplace and relax under the stars—marshmallows recommended. For many people, cooking has moved outdoors, and that simple slab of concrete with a portable grill needs an update. Full-scale outdoor kitchens are decked out with every utility and convenience used indoors. Place some outdoor furniture around a state-of-the-art grill and bar to create a comfortable gathering space. Where outdoor smokers and pizza ovens linger, so will good conversation and tasty meals. Look for sealed and treated furniture to avoid mildew and fading. Add a hammock or swing chair, and you’re well on your way to complete outdoor transformation. Before you dive in, remember to consult the professionals. After all, landscaping and hardscaping increase the value of your home…but not if they look like you tried to tackle a job you couldn’t handle. A strategic approach to your project usually requires an expert opinion from a landscape contractor or a gardener for help with plants and flowers. Landscape designers and architects help plan, design, and manage projects so you end up with your desired outcome. Read online reviews, ask around for personal referrals, and always check licensing credentials. It’s time to get excited about your outdoor space. Let the magic begin! Dental Implants An Alternative to Bridges and Dentures
By Karen Zunke Smith
Many people are unfamiliar with dental implants, but they’re getting more popular all the time. This permanent option for the replacement of missing teeth is becoming preferable to conventional dentures and bridges. More than half a million of these procedures are completed each year, and that number is steadily rising. A dental implant is a metal post or frame, usually composed of titanium, which is surgically positioned into the jawbone, below the gumline. The implant bonds with the natural bone and provides a secure base for attachment of an artificial tooth (called a crown). Once healing has occurred around the implant and it has bonded with the bone (this usually takes some months), the crown is attached with a connector. The procedure can also be done with multiple teeth. In some cases, replacement teeth are grouped into a bridge or denture before being attached. There are several benefits to dental implants over traditional bridges or dentures. Because implants are designed to be permanent, their fit is more secure, and they feel more natural and comfortable than removable bridges or dentures. The health of adjacent natural teeth may be better preserved, since they do not need to be used for attachment (as they would with bridges). Implants are created to custom-match your natural teeth in size, shape, and color. Social situations may be more comfortable with implants, since they do not slip, loosen, or click when talking, laughing, kissing, or eating.
To be considered for dental implants, you must have healthy gums and a jawbone that will support the implant. If your bone is not strong or tall enough, a bone graft may be necessary first. You may need sinus surgery if your sinuses are too close to your upper jaw. The jawbone needs to be fully developed before implants can be used, so implants are not generally an option for patients younger than their late teens. Start the process by talking to your dentist. A small percentage of general dentists can perform dental implant procedures. You most likely will be referred to a specialist, who may be an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, a periodontist, a prosthodontist, or an endodontist. Your regular dentist will likely be able to suggest a specialist to you, but you can also reach out to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (aaid-implant.org) to find credentialed dental implant experts.

I have been very pleased with the quality of the magazine, the staff I have worked with, and most of all the quality of prospects who have become wonderful clients. I wholeheartedly recommend advertising in this publication.” —Pauli Hubbard, CFP with Creative Financial Services, Inc.

Dental implants generally cost more than other methods of tooth replacement. Some insurance companies still do not cover the costs associated with this procedure; others are beginning to recognize the long-term benefits and have started to provide some coverage. If your insurance carrier does not offer coverage, you may be able to receive an allowance to apply toward implants that is equal to the coverage they would provide for a bridge or dentures. Also explore the possibility of financing and payment plans. Maintenance of dental implants and the surrounding gum tissue is similar to the maintenance of natural teeth—it involves good oral hygiene at home and regular visits to the dentist for cleaning and checkups. This will help reduce the risk of complications and may increase the life span of the crowns, which is generally in the range of 10–15 years. As with any surgical procedure, complications can occur. Complications that arise soon after the implant tend to be related to a failure of the bone to heal and integrate with the implant. The Academy of Osseointegration identifies uncontrolled diabetes, low bone density, smoking, poor oral hygiene, and gum disease as possible causes for this. Treatment may involve removing the implant or repairing the surgical site with a bone graft. Another potential complication is infection in the gum tissue, which may need to be treated with antibiotics, more frequent cleanings, or laser therapies. Occasionally, prosthetic complications such as broken screws occur, but these problems are usually easy to repair. The overall success rate of dental implant therapy has been estimated at 98 percent. There are several things you can do to maximize your positive results. The most important action is to do your research ahead of time and ensure that you have chosen an experienced specialist for your implant procedure. If necessary, allow time to evaluate and address medical conditions like diabetes and low bone density before beginning the process. Once the implant is placed, be patient! Allow sufficient time for it to integrate with the bone before moving forward with placement of the connectors and crowns. Once healing has occurred, continue a routine of meticulous oral hygiene and follow recommendations for cleanings and checkups so that you can enjoy the longterm benefits of your dental implants. Restoration After a Storm Be Prepared for the Worst
By Anne Yankus
With spring and summer storms just around the corner, it always helps to have a plan in place in case your home suffers storm damage. Consider making contingency plans for different types of damage you might encounter, including pipe damage from the spring thaw, fire or smoke damage, and storm damage from hail or downed trees. We all look forward to spring, so it’s a real disappointment when the first thaw reveals a broken pipe. Older homes are at highest risk for frozen pipes, and you might even discover a problem while the ground is still frozen. If a frozen pipe bursts inside your home, the first things to do are turn off your water and at least part of your electricity. Call a professional to repair or replace the broken portion of the pipe. Then, get started on removing any standing water or damp items left over from the initial pipe burst. Sprinkler systems are vulnerable to damage over the winter, especially the uninsulated above-ground portions. Before you turn the system on each year, inspect all the nozzles and above-ground pipes for cracks caused by expanding ice. If any cracks are present, repairs are necessary before the sprinkler can be used again. Other indications of a leak are pipes spurting water or large wet areas of soil, which may indicate a leak underground. Fire damage can happen at any time. Obviously, fire itself can
cause significant damage to a home. However, the accompanying smoke often causes far more damage. In addition to discoloration and odor, smoke can also cause structural damage and even electrical damage if it permeates walls and ceilings. Wind, water, and hail can cause plenty of trouble, from broken windows to a damaged roof to downed tree limbs. The first thing to keep in mind when checking for damage after a storm is to stay safe. Windows can have obvious damage like shattered panes, but you should also keep an eye out for dents in the flashing (above the window) or framing due to hail or wind. Roof damage is difficult to check for (especially if you don’t have a safe way to look at your roof), but, if your neighbors are getting roof repairs or replacements, you may need one, too. Tree damage is usually straightforward, but cleanup can be challenging. Try calling your city’s public works department—if ›››

a downed limb is blocking a city street, the city might remove it for you. If not, get in touch with a tree trimming service or arborist to clean up and save your damaged trees. Assessing the damage can be daunting, but it’s only the first step. Once you know what needs to be repaired, call your home insurance company, who will typically provide additional information about restoration companies. What is a restoration company, you ask? They’re people who work for you (not your insurance company) to clean up the mess left by a storm or disaster. They also preserve and protect your home so no further damage occurs while you wait for repairs to be completed. Choose a well-respected company for restoration services. It’s advisable to check if they are certified through the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification). It’s also a good idea to have a restoration company picked out before any incident occurs, since timing is crucial after storm damage. Most (but not always all) restoration costs are reimbursable by your home insurance policy. It can be tricky to find a place to live while your home is being repaired. Fortunately, some insurance policies will cover the cost of temporary housing. Terms to look for in your policy are “loss of use,” “additional living expenses,” “fair rental value,” and “civil authority prohibits use,” and whether or not they’re deemed “necessary expenses” or “covered loss.” With all the hassle of storm damage, don’t forget to look for the silver lining! This can be a great time to make the best of a bad situation by replacing broken windows with more energyefficient or low-maintenance models. A good roof can last 20–25 years before it needs to be replaced, but hail and wind damage will cut that time dramatically. It’s best to have a list of repair people on hand before you need to call them, and make sure they’re certified and locally respected. You may need to make a deposit, but avoid any contractor who expects you to pay in full before the work is completed. Be sure to get everything in writing. No one wants to deal with emergency repairs after storm or fire damage, but having a plan in place and professionals ready to call makes it feel like less of an emergency. Positive Perspective
Put the Phone Down! The Death of Conversation The other morning, I came up with a new description for my iPhone—it’s my adult pacifier. Yep! I had become so dependent on my cell phone that I got agitated, annoyed, and irritated when I didn’t have it readily available to me. I was ready to have a tantrum! Ouch. That is one ugly thing to realize about yourself. “The cell phone has become the adult’s transitional object, replacing the toddler’s teddy bear for comfort and a sense of belonging.” —Margaret Heffernan I remember, years ago, when I first became aware of how intrusive the electronic age had become in our lives. I had my family over—my kids, my brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. There were 12 of us sitting and “talking” in my living room. All of a sudden, the room became quiet…very quiet. I looked up, and all but one of us were on some sort of an electronic device. I admit, I was appalled. I called everyone out, and we had a long discussion about it. Most of the group argued the importance of staying on top of what was happening—the latest alert about a news story, or a text that had come from a friend. I pointed out the death of conversation! “My imagination functions much better when I don’t have to speak to people.”—Patricia Highsmith

Hmm. I think I would label that “delusional thinking.” What was really disturbing to me the other morning was that I realized I had fallen into the same ugly trap. So, what to do? Stop it. Simply stop it. “The fishing is a great relief for me. When I’m out, there’s no cell phone ringing. I’m out there fishing with bears. I’m in the middle of God’s country, catching tons of fish. I just absolutely love it.”—Rick Barry My brother, Tom, loves to go fishing. He shared with me that he had “unplugged” the last time he went up north to fish. He owns his own business, and so the demands on him are very high. When he came back, he told me that it was a great fishing trip. He didn’t brag about the fish he caught. He bragged about the decompression that came from not being tied to his cell phone. I haven’t gone fishing in years. (I am hoping to change that this spring!) That doesn’t mean I can’t throw my pacifier out the window once in a while. I now put my phone in my purse when I go to dinner. I lay it upside down when I’m having a conversation with someone I love…or even like! I’ve cut the cord, and my life is better. Join me? WE
